Five Years: Chapter 12 (The End)

Chapter 12:

“You okay, Betts?” 

Betty shook herself from her thoughts and turned her head to the left to see Jughead, bathed in the red and blue lights of the squad cars, approaching her with a furrowed brow. He pulled her into a hug when she didn’t answer, his arms surrounding her in warmth. She let his scent envelop her, calming her scattered thoughts and fully bringing reality back into focus. 

“Yeah, just... I don’t... I’m sorry, Juggie...” she whispered, hugging him to her even tighter.

“Hey whoa, Betts,” Jughead lifted her chin so she would meet his eyes, “what could you possibly be sorry for?”

“I don’t know, Jug. I think I’m just frustrated. I don’t want this to be the rest of our lives, you know? Always one step behind them with no clues to go on, constantly looking over our shoulders and being paranoid that someone is watching us. I miss our little boy so much and we’re still no closer to having him back home and--” she choked, tears spilling from her eyes.

“Baby, stop- breathe. I promised you we’d catch them, and we will. We aren’t completely without leads; we just have to hold on a little longer, okay? Can you do that for me, Betts?” Jughead asked, searching her eyes as he caressed her cheek.

“Yeah...” Betty replied. She pressed her forehead to Jughead’s chest, the feel of his hands rubbing her back soothing her. “Yeah, I can do that, Jug. I’m just so exhausted... And between watching Ethel flay Mr. Svenson in living color and the suffocating feeling I’ve had over me these last few years, I just lose my head sometimes, ya know?” 

“We all go a little mad sometimes, Betts,” he quoted softly, brushing his hand through her hair.

“Really, Juggie? Hitchcock references at a time like this?” Betty scoffed, pulling back to swat his arm lightly as he chuckled under his breath. He buried his face in her hair and took a deep breath, centering himself. 

“You know me, Betts. Pop culture references are how I deal with traumatic events.” 

“That’s one hell of an understatement, Jones.”

I just want to say it’s been so nice over the past few days (weeks maybe? What is time really? lol) to see some bughead fic writers come out of semi forced retirement so to speak - looking at @imreallyloveleee with this amazing drabble @sullypants with this severance au have yet to read but know it will be fantastic and @heartunsettledsoul throwing canon out the window and just writing what we deserve

Bughead fandom will always be superior to the show itself and it’s so nice to see inspiration circling around again ❤️

So I spent the last day or so reading fics from an old fandom and it struck me that the fandom had just over 1,000 fics in total, not of a certain pairing...just full stop.

Bughead Appreciation Week - Day 1 Bughead Fandom Love Day

First of all: thank you @bugheadcentral for putting this together! I think we all need this.

I won’t even attempt to name all the people in this fandom I’m thankful for because I will inevitably forget someone and feel terrible about it!

I have been in this fandom since Jan. 2017 and so many people have entered (and some since exited but I still remember them fondly) my life because of this crazy show. There’s too many to name in just one post (and I have mommy brain and would forget some of you)!

If we’ve ever interacted, I hope I made you feel like you mattered and like you brought something into my life. You all have. So here are a few blanket statements:

1. I’m so very thankful for all our Bughead fic writers who keep finding new ways of writing our ship falling in love over and over again in thousands of different manners. They have been especially important since canon has been failing us.

2. Thank you to all the wonderful gif makers. I stopped watching at 4.16 and you guys allow me to see only the good Bughead stuff that’s happened since then and remind me of all the wonderful moments we got before things got so completely messed up.

3. Thank you to the ones I call the 'Bughead commentators' because even though I stopped watching, through following your blogs, I can keep up with what’s happening in the land of Bughead on Riverdale.

4. To every single one of you who has encouraged my writing in any way, liked, shared, commented on my stuff: thank you! You enrich my online life and bring me joy. I’m grateful for you.

5. And finally, thank you to all the artists who’ve drawn Bughead. I hope it’s no secret how much I adore each of you, just look at my art collection and you’ll see that.

So if you fall into any of these categories: I appreciate you and your contributions not only to the fandom, but to my life and I’m grateful for you. Thank you for being here.

Chapter 12 (Preview)

Betty stood off to the side of the porch, shivering as she watched the crime scene techs and federal agents flooding the old farmhouse.

The images of Svenson’s murder were still playing behind her eyelids every time she closed them and she just wanted to get as far from this place as possible, never to see it again. 

She honestly hoped someone would just do the world a favor and burn it to ash. Too much misery and horror happened at this place, monstrosities that would stick with her forever.

The whole scene reminded her too much of the day the feds had swarmed her house in Greendale - the one place that was supposed to be her safe haven - because those psychos defiled it. 

She let out a staggering breath, closing her eyes tightly and silently praying that this would all be over when she opened them again. 

Unfortunately, she knew that was wishful thinking on her part. There was only one way to finish this and she knew she had to be ready to see this through to the end, no matter what. She had lived in fear long enough, running wasn’t going to be an option anymore.  

“You okay, Betts?”

Y'all, it only took me a year and three months to get this chapter completed and in the finishing stages but it's finally almost done and will be posted within the week! I hate that it took so long but I lost my mojo for a bit (getting cancer can do that to you) but I'm glad that the conclusion is finally happening. I hope you guys enjoy it!

thinking a lot about how riverdale’s writing has completely denied Betty any interiority since season 5 except for her feelings about her darkness and how convenient that is for the writers who would just hate to be nailed down by things like thematic or emotionally resonant character arcs.

and also thinking about how for the most active contingent of the ba fandom, this writing of Betty is actually ideal, since they are mostly invested in her as a white girl they can project onto because they think Archie is hot, anyway.

#AND TO BE CLEAR at the height of riverdale's popularity bughead fandom *also* had this problem #and still does in certain sections of the fandom #but Betty was an actual character then #ba fandom is like INVESTED in betty being a blank slate lmao #the fact that Betty had to become a pod person for the writers to *explore* ba sure is a thing #ANYWAY is it monday yet I just want this season to be over #riverdale negativity #anti b*rchie

That being said some of you have lovely ideas for that episode, and as we cannot count on Riverdale to deliver that level of quality (even if they sometimes surprise us) I hope some of you will put your ideas into drabbles or fic.
