It's a little weird dipping back into Riverdale, but I rediscovered how much fun it is writing this fic. I also wanted to see how the mood board turned out.

chapter ten: speak no evil IV

“Oh, my goodness, go back to the dorms, Jug,” Betty urges, patting his cheek. “You’re dead on your feet.”

“I couldn’t if I tried,” he admits, yawning into her palm. He doesn’t say he is too afraid to try. The card is burning a hole through his chest pocket. He isn’t sure how much time he has to complete the quest, what happens if he fails.

Betty sighs but doesn’t push him further. Giving him a break from transcribing, she takes a seat at the drafting table and begins working on the layout, aligning her article on the front page.

He appreciates this about Betty. She communicates that she cares through words, subtle actions, but she doesn’t pressure him with it. Toni would pick up his shit and toss it out the door to get him to leave and take care of himself. It was abrasively kind, but Jughead prefers Betty’s method.

“How about an exchange to keep me awake?” he suggests, throwing his feet up on the desk with his notepad in his lap.

“Of?” she prompts, her gaze focused on the layout.

“Information.”

2. How many words did you write total in 2023?

3. How many fics did you publish in 2023? How many multichapters vs. oneshots?

3 oneshots, 1 new WIP, and updated 1 WIP. this was definitely one of my least "productive" years for fic-writing in quite a while (although i don't think i published much in 2022 either, looking back). for obvious reasons: i was traveling for more than half the year; and also Riverdale canon was so fucking awful to our ship specifically that i think it just killed off everyone's desire to read and write about them. thanks RAS! <3

4. What was your longest fic? Your shortest fic?

longest: i feel like i win when i lose, my bughead four weddings & a funeral-inspired fic. 16,379 words (and i need to finish the last chapter ahhhhhhhhhhhhh)

shortest: honeymoon phase, my (very first!!) jimmy/kim fic. 1,927 words.

5. What was your most popular fic? Your least popular?

even though it kind of feels like cheating, head underwater was most popular, because even though i started it years ago, i updated it in 2023!

for least popular, if we're going by kudos, it was three conversations about one thing, which was my desperate attempt to make some sense out of the penultimate episode of riverdale s7 lol

6. What fic didn't perform as well as you thought it would?

honestly, i try to keep my expectations low for everything i publish, to avoid disappointment. i guess the answer would be that last one, "three conversations." but like, the show's ending sucked? i'm not surprised people were not dying to run out and read fic about it 😂

7. What fic performed way better than you thought it would?

i really did not know what to expect from posting a Better Call Saul fic. the show ended over a year ago, and i don't really have much of a sense of how big/active the fandom around it is, or was at its peak. that said, i was EXTREMELY happy to discover that there are way more fics for Jimmy/Kim than there were for the last "prestige"-y show ship i wrote for (Peggy/Stan on Mad Men).

so, all that to say, i was really pleasantly surprised to get as much engagement as i did with that little story! and i'm working on another one now and really enjoying writing it. :)

8. What was your favourite fic you wrote in 2023?

i feel like i win when i lose!!!!!!! the first four chapters of that story just FLOWED out of me like they already existed. it was so much fun to write and i think it's a super fun story in general. i reeeeeeally want to finish it.

9. What was your favourite fic someone else wrote in 2023?

Beautiful Broken Things by teaandpinkfrosting: a well-written, well-plotted, sweet, emotional, in-character season 1 Bughead fic in the year of our lord 2023? WHAT DID WE DO TO DESERVE THIS?

Eighty-Six Years by jimmymcgools: a grounded, believable, heartwrenching, yet ultimately hopeful continuation of the most devastating finale i've ever watched in my life? again, WHAT DID WE DO TO DESERVE THIS? [ETA to be extra clear that the finale i'm referencing here is bcs NOT rvd lol]

2022 Fanfiction Reading Challenge

October Stats 🎃

Happy November, my friends! We managed to wait until today to get our first real dusting of snow - so that’s fun for us. Halloween is one of my favourite holidays - my daughter dressed as Princess Peach and her friends were various Mario characters. They were a hit! We just moved into a new neighbourhood - and literally only had 34 little trick-or-treaters. VERY different from our last house where we’d have steady kids from 4pm-10pm and go through several boxes of treats... now I have two big bowls left over. Whatever shall we do? 😏

Fandom-wise, I’m two tasks away from completing the @fanfic-reading-challenge​​ - in fact, I’m only waiting on the month requirement tasks (fics that have to be read in Nov and Dec) and then I’m completely done the Regular, Hard, AND Extreme challenges. Thank you all for joining me on this journey - for the messages with fic suggestions and for being patient with my monthly run-downs. What started as my comfort!fic rundowns in April 2020 (after the infamous leak™️) has become something fun for me anyway - even if no one else is reading these. lol. 

The last few weeks were pretty challenging as far as doing the fic challenge - because I had to read several longer-ish stories from fandoms I am not part of and don’t really know much about. It gave me an appreciation for some new fandoms and pairings - and it also made me miss the Golden Era of my own fandom and the quality of the fics profoundly. I think I’m going to spend my November rereading those stories. Suggestions for your faves would be welcome.

I started reading Daemon/Rhaenyra this month and have been SO pleased with the stories - there is one that is currently a WIP that is absolutely glorious and I drop everything when it’s updated to read it right then! I legit read 46 different fandoms in this one month - most were because of the challenge, but I know I’ll return to many of them in the future. If you were to read one fandom outside of your norm - what is it?

foolish hearts (series) by @catthecoder​​ (5 fics - Bughead)

Summary:  When a federal agent Betty Cooper gets assigned a case featuring an art thief and forger Jughead Jones, she doesn’t really think much of it. But as months pass, alongside the irritation caused by both the lack of progress in the case and the criminal himself, other feelings start to blossom as well; particularly the ones of respect and admiration. And the fact that Jughead is more intrigued by the agent on his case than terrified of her certainly doesn’t help much with keeping their relationship strictly professional. In their lines of work, pleasure and business certainly shouldn’t mix, but who’s there to stop their foolish hearts?

Why you should read it: HOW DID I MISS THIS THE FIRST TIME?! This is wonderful. THE WHOLE SERIES. Glorious. I was stuck in my feels the whole time. I legitimately LOVED each character - flaws and all - and I FELT for them. And the writing is beautiful. I was physically sad when I reached the end and there was no more to read in this universe. What a gift.

Hold the Rock by @avocadomooon (1/1 - Tyrion/Sansa)

Summary: "Nag? No. A bad wife nags. A good wife advises," Tyrion said. "And you are a very good wife." "Thank you, my lord," Sansa said. "Now comes the part where you tell me I'm a very good husband." "You are passable, my lord," she said, and Tyrion laughed.

Why you should read it: Okay - so I know you’re skeptical because it’s not a pairing people generally think “oooh that sounds good” - BUT TRUST ME - this was REALLY good. Alternate universe a bit - where Ned doesn’t go down to KL. It’s arranged marriage - but I promise, the depth of these characters is just TOP NOTCH. It’s a one-shot but it’s a long one - and you’re love these two by the end of it.

Let Her Own Works Praise Her in the Gates by @chronicbookworm​ (1/1 - Mary Bennet/Mr. Collins)

Summary:  Circumstances (and Mary) conspire to make Mr Collins propose to Mary instead of Charlotte Lucas. The new Mrs Collins finds a place for herself in Hunsford, finds a cause to champion, and finds more courage than she knew she had.

Why you should read it: OKAY OKAY - So I know you’re going to give me the side eye and say “Jandy, why are we reading about very well boiled potatoes?” - but I have to tell you, this is how Austen should have written the Mr. Collins storyline. Mary is FANTASTIC here. A bit manipulative, but for the good of everyone. Honestly - if you like Austen or Austen fics at all, please give this one shot a try. It was very very well written and the characters are really likeable (even Collins) - well, except Lady Catherine (BUT - Mary tells her off, so it’s fabulous). Anyway - read it. It was a joy for me this month.

Heyy!! Yep! I’m actually co-writing a Bughead season six fic with @bugheadalwaysandforever that I’m really excited about :D fingers crossed that gets posted ASAP.

Tapes of Us should be updated soon! And as I get inspiration (and more time now that teaching placement is over) there will be more Bughead fics in the works.

As for the Bughead crumbs you speak of (which I’m assuming are in reference to the falice fanfic) - they’re coming, I just want to leave the juicy stuff for when they’re teenagers. Which should have already happened, but as with every story I write the plot got bigger than I anticipated and they’re still children at this stage hahaha. But there are a lot of child friendship moments coming up immediately :) (and even more Falice moments that are… not so friendly)

So, me and my friend were talking on Twitter, and we were saying how sad it is that the Bughead fandom has been so quiet and no longer update their fanfiction anymore. It’s been so quiet since the Time Jump. I only get maybe 2 to 3 notifications in my email of updates. I know people get busy, I get busy too. I work 11 hours a day, 4 to 5 days a week. I still make the time to update my fics, even if they’re weeks a part. Bughead writers, where have you gone? Why hasn’t there been more people updating their fics? In this time of Riverdale, we need people to continue writing their stories in the chance that we may not get our Betty and Jughead back.

AHHHH I’m excited that you’re excited!!

This fic has been percolating in the back of my brain for a while now but I hadn’t written in so long that the insecurities were just compounding over time. But! I’ve somehow managed to get back into writing and I think it’s time to put this thing out into the world soon.

Hopefully you all enjoy it! And hopefully I’ll get enough encouragement/validation from this fic to go back and finally finish pride and publishing (a year and a half after the latest update 🤦🏻‍♀️)

anyways, I hope you truly are ready, because, as @bigdsgirl says, this one just might make you cry (and hopefully also laugh and feel warm inside etc etc)

chapter seven

It’s a stormy Passover for Betty and Jughead as Bernie Sanders suspends his presidential campaign. Plus: a virtual Easter celebration with Cheryl, more apocalypse jokes, and adventures in edible-baking.

“This is my kind of weather,” Jughead says when they leave Betty’s building an hour later, the first feel of cool air on their masked faces.

“What, the kind of weather that requires at least three layers?” Betty quips, laughing when Jughead pulls her closer to him and messes up her hair teasingly.

“Stop calling me out,” he says, settling for holding her hand as they start walking the route they’d taken last time. (Indeed, Jughead’s wearing a t-shirt, a flannel, and a denim jacket as a complement to the sweatshirt and denim jacket Betty had thrown over her own top.)

This first early-morning sojourn proves a success. The neighborhood is significantly less populated at this time. When they reach the intersection where they’d typically take a right to head home, Betty tugs on Jughead’s hand to stop him in place. He looks over at her; she can see the question in his eyes despite the mask.

“Wanna go a little longer? There aren’t too many people out, and I’m enjoying this.”

Jughead nods, squeezing her hand. “Sounds good to me.”

They keep walking, resolving to loop back around toward home after another few blocks. Betty leads Jughead down one of her favorite blocks in the neighborhood, trees canopying the sky between the two parallel rows of brownstones. Betty spots budding flowers in front yards and on planters perched on stoops and it makes her smile. She has the weird thought, as they keep walking, that no one can tell when she smiles under this mask.

“As the black-haired young man dutifully trailed after his guide toward her preferred train car, he caught snippets of Betty singing under her breath that sounded like “How do you call your lover boy?..Oh, lover boy...And if he doesn’t answer?....Oh, lover boy.” He jogged close enough to her so that he could wrap his arm around her waist. “Are you singing what I think you are, Betts?” he asked with a grin. She playfully elbowed him in the ribs. “I’ve had that stuck in my head since Grand Central. You’d have heard me humming it on the train earlier if you didn’t have your headphones on,” she said sticking her tongue out at him. Just as he leaned down to capture her mouth with his, she spun away from him like Baby and cheekily backed up in to the train car.”

chapter six

April rent is due, Betty and Jughead unsuccessfully try to convince Archie to organize a tenant strike, and Veronica plans a virtual happy hour.

“I really like that, Jug,” she says. “I will eagerly read anything having to do with it whenever you want me to. Wait. How is it about me?”

Jughead blushes. “There’s a certain...blonde, ponytailed love interest who knows how to pick locks.”

Betty laughs, a surprised look on her face. “You remembered I can do that?”

“A game of Never Have I Ever, shortly after I moved here,” he pauses for a second then adds, “Hottest thing I’d ever heard.”

Betty turns around in his arms. “Really?”

He leans down and they kiss, getting lost in each other for a minute. When they come up for air, Jughead grins. “I get to ask you a question now.”

“I guess that’s only fair.”

It’s not hard to decide. He’s been wondering for awhile.

“What are you trying to do, Betty?”

Betty sounds genuinely confused. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, like, you know I’m writing this novel and who knows if it’ll ever be anything but, hey, it’s better than my day job. Do you have a thing like that?”

Betty purses her lips, and Jughead can’t tell if she’s considering her answer or scared to tell him the truth. He lifts his hand—with a little splash—to rest it on Betty’s shoulder.

“I really want to be an investigative journalist,” Betty finally says, looking toward the cracked window. “It’s why I majored in journalism. I just want to investigate something important, to have some room to choose what I write about and uncover things that matter.”

Jughead watches her talk, her eyes lighting up in a way he sees far too rarely. Only when she’s truly passionate about something. He’d noticed, over the past few weeks, that he didn’t see that light in her eyes while they were working in the kitchen together. Maybe when she video-chats with Toni and Veronica but otherwise? She’s focused and hard-working, sure. But he knows Betty Cooper and there’s no passion there.

“But you’re stuck in a job that bores you,” he says when he realizes Betty has stopped talking, that she’s waiting for his reaction.

She grins. “Oh, so I guess you’ve noticed?”

“We’ve been doing this co-working-space thing for a couple weeks now, you know,” he says, squeezing her arm teasingly.

“I know,” Betty says. “I just didn’t know it was that obvious.” Her face quickly turns to horror. “I hope it’s not obvious at work.”

Jughead shakes his head. “Your face completely changes every time you get on a Zoom call,” he says. “It’s just...here, in your home, I can see the real you. And the real you is bored.”

Betty laughs, reaching up and kissing his cheek. “The real me wants a job that makes me feel...excited to get up and go to work every day,” she sighs. “And sometimes that makes me feel guilty, because technically I have a decent gig. Our union contract is pretty solid, so I’m making industry standard wages and have good benefits, ya know?”

“But it’s just not fulfilling?” Jughead guesses. She nods, looking almost nervous. “That’s okay, Betty,” Jughead says.

“I’ve never told anyone that before,” she admits. She slides out of his lap and turns to face him, on her knees. He takes her hands and kisses each one, overwhelmed with the idea that he could be the person she trusts most.

He slaps his palm against his forehead. “What the fuck is wrong with us that a literal global pandemic was what it took for us to tell each other how we feel?”

Betty giggles, planting a sweet kiss on his cheek. “Look, for whatever reason, I guess that’s what it took for us to have this moment.”

“Maybe we shouldn’t analyze too hard why this is the path the universe had in store for us,” Jughead says and Betty giggles again.

“Agreed,” she says. “All we can control is the future. Let’s just...be honest going forward about how we’re feeling. And that goes for the good and the bad. Okay?”

“Okay,” Jughead says, sealing their little pact with another kiss that quickly devolves into more tangling in the sheets.
