That “beware of powerful men” line is so irksome. That line doesn’t really tell you anything. I will never get over how much they blew up Alina’s character development by having her run back to Mal after she had grown so much in the Little Palace. I can’t blame the show for this, they made the best of the source material. I really think LB needs to re-examine a lot of her ideas, especially about women, power, and minorities. These are three things she didn’t handle well.
And as we know the Darkling is actually helping Genya get revenge on the King, and Genya at this point is willingly serving him as a spy, this line is definitely nonsensical. I suppose Genya could have meant it as a general rule of thumb based on her own experiences with the King (completely understandable and is a good rule altogether), but the way it was set up in context, (as a response to “I think I’m going to stick to the black kefta moving forward”) it felt like she was referring to the Darkling in particular, which she would not have done at this point in the narrative. Also, if this show is really going to look me in the eye and try to tell me Genya would warn Alina off the Darkling after witnessing her normally stoic, guarded, cold, imperious, powerful, dangerous shadow summoner general visibly enamored at the sight of Alina...I think I’m just going to laugh. (Especially since the narrative later on went on to frame Genya as an enabler of the Darkling’s “abuse.” Le sigh).

I don’t think they anticipated how much people will root for darklina and The Darkling. It’s like they forgot that the fantasy landscape has changed, and people love complicated villains and anti heroes. Then they cast Ben Barnes which “duh, fantasy king.” So here we are, post season 1 and more people are rooting for Darklina than they anticipated and now they are trying to salvage their weird Malina thing by piling on the darkling.
Not going to lie, if they had approached me with ideas on how to adapt or otherwise rewrite this series...I would have basically done a B&B/Jane Eyre magical Russia AU with Darklina endgame. Like that’s a no-brainer. I would have killed off Mal in the Fold or at least have Alina confront him on his BS and break up with him. Developed the Little Palace part much better. Probably included Darkling’s POV, depends. Get rid of that Baghra ex machina twist or else have Alina stay and confront the Darkling and then maybe leave à la Jane Eyre because angst, ofc. Then maybe have an actual Hitler-style leader who hate the Grisha and want them dead OR do the jurda parem plotline so she and the Darkling have to team up via tether but there is ~history and ~sexual tension out the wazoo. Center all the political intrigues on the Grisha question. There are ways to make this story better that the show did pick on, but they did not go as far as they could and should have. So it’s no surprise that so many people root for Darklina—apart from the obvious chemistry between both the actors and the characters, it’s the logical consequence of the B&B theme and the only true conclusion to their respective character arcs.

Also, I don’t know how I’m supposed to hate The Darkling when his most obvious motivation is the protection of his people from all the horrors they’ve had to endure. Like, you’ve already established that the only reason why Grisha aren’t being hunted in Ravka is because of the Darkling, and now I’m supposed to be like “yeah, let’s kill the guy that is the only line of defense for this minority community that has consistently been hunted and killed?” That’s literally a hero.
And then of course the KOS duology affirms that the status for Grisha have actually deteriorated what with these supersoldier and breeding programs by Fjerda and Shu Han and they are just as persecuted, if not more so, than ever. But pfft, Grisha, they’re just a super privileged elite, amirite? Darkling should have just chilled.
