Journal Hacking
I’m not sure if this will make sense to anyone else but I wanted to document something I’ve been trying lately with regards to planning/bujo/journaling type things. Even if only so I can go back and see what I did lol.
So I have been bullet journaling in some form on and off since 2014. So it’s been a minute. And while I like it on the whole, it’s just not been working out for me lately. I tried a Hobonichi weeks mega and while I really like some aspects it’s just not enough room for me. My handwriting is not that small.
I ran across a simplified GTD-like system called Ugmonk Analog and I liked the principles (even if I didn’t like the price tag) so I adapted it to my new journal.
Ugmonk’s Analog system has three cards - Today, Next, and Someday. I’m just using notecards I have for this. I put the Today card on my cover with washi tape so I can see it without opening my notebook and easily write things down (my pen is in the loop to the side there).
Tumblr media
The Next and the Someday cards - along with some others are in the inside. I made the pocket by taping one of the notecards horizontally and taping the two outside sides.
The long bit of text on the inside cover is the Heart Sutra. I like to write it on notebooks I’ll be using regularly so I pause and reflect on it more regularly.
Tumblr media
In addition to Next and Someday cards, I have a blank one for scratch paper and one with my ideal timelines for doing home and personal tasks. The personal side is lacking, I’m kind of in a state of transition on that so I’m unclear what I want to do regularly. The house stuff never happens all the way but I like knowing what I’d like to do when I’m adding tasks to my Today card.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I think my favorite part of this system is the memory keeping part. It’s not super elegant or pretty but on the pack of each today card, I record any notable things about the day on the top (period, mood, fights, symptoms) with a hashtag, the weather, and then I fill the card with what I did that day. It’s been very helpful so far for jogging my memory throughout the week. I like that I can pull them out and see as many as I’d like throughout the week. I plan on digitizing them at the end of the year and keeping the last year as a hard copy.
I keep the card in this little green box. Might decorate it soon.
I don’t really feel like sharing my finished cards so hopefully this gives you an idea. I like that I can see what happened in a day and what I got done on one card.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So yeah, I’m really liking it so far. I still do long form journaling (Morning Pages type things) in the notebook itself. I actually turn it so the short side is on the top and it’s kind of like writing on an A4 sheet of paper. I do that so I don’t start auto rereading old journal entries when I’m flipping through for other stuff. I index and thread anything that isn’t journal entries like I would a normal bullet journal. Right now I have some random notes for subject I’m studying, some pen and paper games I’m playing, and writing notes.
I’m also going to add either an A6 monthly calendar or print my own calendar set up to add to the back pocket for scheduling things in advance. I know everyone uses Google Calendar but I never check mine much. So people can schedule things with me on my Google Cal but my source of truth will be the hard copy.
Some resources I took inspiration from in setting all this up:
- OG Bullet Journal - I’m surprised by how many people I’ve met who don’t know that bullet journaling isn’t just making your own pretty planner but an actual system (no shade to the art journaling folks, I’m just not one of them). When I say I use bullet journaling, this is what I’m using. Check for some of his more recent videos if you like it, he’s updated it.
- Ugmonk Analog - slightly expanded to-do list system on paper; the product seems nice but they’ve actually been very supportive of people making their own knockoff versions for personal use which is cool to see
- Everbook - I think if I had more to juggle, I’d upgrade to something like this system. This guy has so many neat ideas sprinkled throughout the channel. He also really supports people making their own version. Love a good open source ethos.
Anyways - hope this helps someone!

The index. I like to number my pages so I can index notes in my notebook to easily find later (idea comes from The Bullet Journal Method).

sunday, july 30th, 2023 | 35/100 days of productivity
I was kind of dreading today because it was finally time to take a practice exam, even though I wasn't as far in my review of the material as I had hoped. it went really well, though! I did better than I thought I would and I wrote down a few areas that I need to focus on. I also got to practice the simulation-style questions for the first time, which makes me less nervous about the actual exam.
the blessing/curse of having an open-note and open-book exam is that there is a ton of material that I need to be able to find quickly. this practice exam was also a test of my index and note-taking system, and I think it worked pretty well! I still have lots to study, but I'm not as afraid that I'm going to completely fail the exam in a month haha
today's productivity:
took a practice exam
setup my august bujo spreads
planned next week
today's self-care:
took a shower
ate some vegetables at lunchtime
chatted with friends

set up bujo for next year and figure out how i'm gonna keep track of all the things i wanna do
read a short article on moral philosophy so i have a better idea of what i would be getting into if i take a course on it...

the OG SIMPLE BULLET JOURNAL SETUP
I wrote a very long rant about the expectations most BuJo videos, tutorials and blogs set. Then I decided to share the basic setup instead, in hopes that those who need a starting point without fancy additions will find it. Here ya go:
Setup order
Home & Key
Index
Future Log
Monthly Log
Daily Log
1. Home & Key
The "This book belongs to" page and the key. Setup once per book.
Here's the classic key:
Tumblr media
2. Index
Setup once / twice per book.
Take 2 pages, write index on top. That's it. You can add a vertical line in the middle of the page to save some space, but not even that is necessary.
As you go on journalling, planning and making lists, You'll write down pages & their content here so you can find what you're looking for easier in the future.
Tumblr media
3. Future Log
Setup once per year.
This is where you put events, deadlines, appointments and the likes so you dont have to flip through multiple months to find what you're looking for.
For the whole year take 4 pages. Ideally 2x2. Title them "Future Log". Draw 2 lines on each to mark thirds. Put the names of the month in each third. That's it.
Fill it in by writing down "day: Event".
Tumblr media
4. Monthly Log
The month as bird's-eye view. Take 2 pages. Left will be your calendar. Write the month at the top and then down the left 1-30 (or 28 or 31, depending on the month). Now check your phone or pc or another calendar to see on which day of the week this specific month starts. Put the initials of the weekdays next to the dates. That's it.
If you like to have the weeks during the month jumping out, add a horizontal line at each end/start of a week. Fill in events, due dates, tasks you want to do on a specific day.
The right page is for stuff you want to do this month, but don't want to schedule right now. Also intentions and a month's end summary have their place here if you want them.
Tumblr media
5. Daily Log
Here's your day-to-day. Write down today's date and weekday if you like. Format it however you like. e.g. "Monday, January 16, 2023" or "M16" or "Monday 16" or "01/16". Doesn't matter. Put whatever you enjoy.
That's it. The daily setup. beneath that you can now write down your tasks, thoughts, events in any order and mixture you like. However it comes to mind, put it here (with it's assigned key).
Bonus: Weekly Log
If you'd like to have an on the nose weekly block to see throughout your day-to-day, you can put that here as well. No need to assign it a whole page in advance.
Simplest way is basically copy & pasting that bit from you calendar in the Monthly Log. Day numbers and initials then your event / scheduled stuff next to it.
Tumblr media
Hope this was somewhat helpful =)

I've been asked by multiple people for my medical BuJo setup, so here are the important parts @justcaytlin you were one of them I believe?
This is the first page after the Index, which since my Artist's Loft journal comes with two bookmark ribbons I keep one here for easy access
Tumblr media
[Image Description: a page from a dot grid journal. On the top it says Emergency Info, and in the upper right corner is a little heart that says "organ donor". Beneath that is a section that says "Name:", "DOB:", and "Address:", the pertinent info to that has been redacted. Then beneath that to the left is a box for Emergency Contacts, with a primary and secondary name and their phone numbers, also all redacted. Beneath that is a box labeled "Allergies/Do Not Give", listing medications and allergies with what happens if I take them in parentheses. Beneath that is a box labeled Dietary Restrictions, listing mine. Then to the right of those is a larger box labeled "Medical Conditions", followed by a list of mine. Beneath that is a tiny rectangle that says "Blood Type:" followed by mine which has been redacted so the Sycorax don't get me. Beneath that is a box with the name of my insurance, and then finally is a box for my vaccinations (on that note get your covid bivalent booster and flu shot). In the lower left corner in big letters it says "I do not consent to a DNR" because that's the world we deal with now. End I.D.]
It should be noted that I just now after taking this photo decided to write at the very bottom "Medications/Implants/Surgeries on next page" with an arrow, which leads me to the next page
Tumblr media
[Image Description: the next page. On the top it says "Medications", with a table, listing the medications, dosage, what it's for, and when I take it. Beneath that is a (currently blank) table for "Implants/Devices", with a list section for a device and then what it's for. Beneath that is a table listing "Surgeries/Procedures", listing the surgery, when it happened, and where it was done. There's room for future surgeries. End I.D.]
Tumblr media
[Image Description: a page entitled "Doctors/Pharmacy", with separate boxes labeled with the types of doctors I see (Primary care, neurologist, gastroenterologist, et cetera). All of the contact info has been redacted, but each box includes the name of the doctor, the facility they work at, the address, and phone number. At the bottom is a similar box for my pharmacy info. The info continues onto the next page, but you get the gist. End I.D.]
Tumblr media
[Image Description: a page entitled "Recent Hospitalizations", with a page-long table (with six rows filled out so far), with columns for the "Date", "Hospital", "For?", and "Admitted?". In the one visit that answers yes, it also says how long I was admitted for. End I.D.]
Tumblr media
[Image Description: this page is labeled Hospital Checklist, and it's just a reminder of what I personally like to bring when I'm headed to the ER and might be admitted. My list includes this planner, my phone, phone charger and brick, medications (obvs the hospital will give you your meds if you're admitted, but sometimes I'm in the lobby long enough that it's medication time and I need them on hand), laptop, laptop charger, underwear, masks, diary, pens, wallet and cards, sketchbook and pencil/pens, hand sanitizer, earbuds, MP3 player. End I.D.]
Then this is how I plan my schedule. I did the entire year from December Twenty Twenty-two to December Twenty Twenty-three, so I don't have to keep making calendars at the beginning of each month.
Tumblr media
[Image Description: a calendar of December Twenty Twenty-two, with a space off to the side divided between Tasks up top and Notes down below. The calendar has appointments (signified by a triangle) here and there, and other important dates.
Now after the calendar is when I start doing things month-by-month, like symptom tracking:
Tumblr media
[Image Description: a page entitled "December Twenty Twenty-two Symptoms/Concerns, Period Tracker". The symptoms have all been redacted, but their are page-long columns for each of my specialists. To the right is a section that says "Period Started:" followed by "Period Ended:". There ends up being a blank section beneath that, but I could always just use that if I fill up one of the columns. End I.D.]
I also added pockets to the covers in case I need to add a loose paper
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image Description: the insides of the front and back covers. Each has a triangular pocket made of manila folder pasted on. The front pocket is labeled "Labs/Test orders, and the back pocket is labeled "Misc. Notes/Discharge Orders". End I.D.]
I also made a page ahead of time for today's Neurosurgery consult, with the new doctor's name, address, and time I needed to be there, with half the paste dedicated to questions and concerns I had, followed by the rest of the page being appointment notes.
Other that that my BuJo is dedicated to other things, like my cats' and their illnesses, their vet info and medications and a log for when they need to see the vet, a spread dedicated to the GoFundMe for their cancer treatments and a list of charities I'm trying to contact, and other less important things I need to keep track of.
Anyway hope this helps/inspires my fellows who need to keep track of this stuff!

i've been annoyed by the bujo community again so i'm making my own bullet journal post. it's a review of my old one and changes i made in my new one (hopefully i can attach more than 10 images if it's in a reblog)
i used a moleskin notebook and i'm using one this year as well. these types of notebooks aren't videly available here in serbia and this was pretty much the only dotted notebook i could find here
Tumblr media Tumblr media
all of these were stolen/repurposed (perks of going to hipster student caffees is that they are cheap and the bathroom tiles are covered in these so they are easy to steal)
i set it up the way carroll does and i use that system with minor adjustements. i don't really do rapid logging but instead i make weekly spreads and i use different signifiers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
as you can see two pages would have been more than enough for the index and i decided to make a double future log spread cause i had to make a new one in the middle of my old journal as i realised i can fit 12 months in here (well, almost)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i pretty quickly realised that his signifiers don't work for me but i decided to stick to it for the first 3 months and then i made an internal review and decided on what i wanna change so the new spreads looked like this (a monthly spread plus a weekly spread)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
occasionaly i would make a callendar style spread in order to track days leading up to exams. i managed to fit almost all 12 months in here but i needed space for september so i decided to just leave the last 10 pages blank and move into my diary cause it was summer and i did not need to keep track of that many things daily. same set up just slightly different
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i like the diary set up so i've decided to use that in my new bullet journal. index is only 2 pages now and i have all 12 months in the future log (double 6 month spread) and also i switched to using cyrilic now (idk if other serbs do this but i have fazes where i use only cyrilic or only latin for like, a year and then i switch)

Hello!! A while ago, you mentioned that you have a digital index for your notes. That sounds so interesting! Would you mind explaining your process for it? I just started my PhD journey, and I think a digital index would help me a great amount for organising purposes :D
Hello there! Thank you for asking, I don't mind explaining at all!
This "index" is pretty straightforward, it's basically like a massive bujo index for several notebooks. I handwrite most of the notes I take when reading secondary literature for my PhD (unless it's a monography, in which case I type them to save a bit of time and paper). However, I still want to access these notes quickly and easily when I need them for citations or whatever, and as time goes by and the amount of notebooks grows, it would be unpractical to just flip through all the notebooks until I find what I need.
So I keep a Word document titled "Index Notes Thèse", that I update when I finish a notebook or every once in a while when the notebook is thicker. Each notebook is given a number and/or a "title"/nickname, I write down which notebook it is (e.g. "black A5 Leuchtturm" or "Moleskine Pro"), and the time period I used them for. For each notebook, I then list everything they contain and it's organized like this :
page numbers - author's name + title of the article/chapter or Teams Call with X + the date or title of the lecture + the date or title of the page for miscellanous.
Here's an example of what it looks like
Tumblr media
That's basically it. It's simple enough that it doesn't require too much time to update it, and comprehensive enough that I can identify what the references are about, and the ctrl+f function makes it wayyy easier than paper index (I usually index the notebooks as I go if there's a space dedicated for it, as in Leuchtturm notebooks).
It could be optimized if I used like keywords for each reference, to list every aspect of my thesis they cover (for the article on p. 5 above could be, for example, "GM" for Guerrin Meschin, "Translation" and "Literature history"; for the one on p. 19 it could be "codicology" "editing theory", "autograph manuscript" and so on) but I feel like I don't need it (for PDFs, I save them in labelled folders on my computer so that's usually enough), it would make things more complicated and time consuming, and I would probably overlook some refs if I forgot to index a specific aspect. I don't know if that makes sense 😬
I hope this helps!
Good luck with your PhD journey 🌻

During the first semester of this year, in fact until August, I tried to put my to-do list in an app. I had hope to be able to carry it everywhere with me, with limited additional weight to my backpack, and the idea of being able to sync it in my phone and on any device was appealing. But by the end of August, I had to put the idea to rest. It was never going to work for me. There's nothing easier to ignore than a notification, but there's nothing that can nag more at me than an unread notification. I was losing my mind, and feeling unfocused both at home and at work.
To be fair, I don't think you should be always focused. That kind of productivity is the achievement productivity books are selling you. They can be obnoxious afuck with it. But as my life is shared with my family, my work and my hobbies, I need to be able to keep track of what I must, should or want to do.
So I went back to my organiser. It sounds very fancy. It's not. It's an A5 binder, I filled with doted paper.
I use a mix of influences, but mainly I take inspiration from the original Bullet Journal method, and from Getting Things Done. From the Bujo, I took the idea of collections, of a key code and of very few trackers. From the GTD, I took the weekly review, the in-tray and always starting a task description with a verb. So what does it looks like ?
Here are the basic bones. Six tabs, with 1) routines, 2) weekly view which is gone since I began this post's draft, 3) In-tray, 4) collections, 5) references, 6) archives
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The routines contains 2 things: stretching exercises and my trackers. I reduced it to only two trackers, one for tasks needed to be done regularly (I'm not sure I'll keep it), and one to see when I write or "touch" my writing. The notion of "touch your writing (every day)" was introduced to me by Lionel Davoust, to take in account everything around writing that isn't properly speaking writing (editing, correcting, but also plotting, research, brainstorming, sorting...). It helped me to be more forgiving to my failure to write.
The weekly view was supposed to be very simple. Set with the week number at the top, it was directly followed with the list of the main tasks I wanted to accomplish during that week. I only opened the next week during weekly review. The repetition with the In-tray, made it too heavy to manage, and I started to ignore my organiser (that's always the sign something doesn't work). I probably will use that now-empty spot for something else, maybe even dedicate it to learning Japanese.
Tumblr media
The In-tray lists every task I can think of, or comes across (except emails answers where I use the unread option in my mailbox). During my weekly review I will go through them and scratch tasks I've (forgot to mark as) done, but also tasks that are no longer relevant. I also add a color code to identify 3 groups of tasks: Professional, Personal, and the ones related to my daughter and partner. (sorry for blurring so much, but privacy is key)
Tumblr media
I will only show the index of the collections. Some contain too much sensitive data to show more. Collections are what I want to keep permanently (birthdays, travel lists, embroidery projects lists...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The reference has only two things atm: the key, and a set-up cheat sheet, because I'm lazy.
Finally the archive is something I use when I need (want) to keep old collections, that are no longer relevant, but worth keeping for legal reason or as memorablia. Currently, I have the detailed calculations of our nanny payslips, and the comments I made for my worst quarter at work (worse in the sense it was too much to handle alone, and I nearly burned out).
That's it. It's been going well so far, and I don't really feel lost on what I could do next, which was plaguing my momentum before. Hopefully, it will last, but I've learned that I shouldn't get too attached to a system. It'll work until it breaks.

Budget Stationery Haul!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Paper Kooka
Dingbats B5 notebook
I much prefer the size of this to the A5 ones I usually get, it's perfect for me! This one has 160gsm paper too - I haven't noticed any ink bleeding so far. It doesn't have an index like the leuchtturm but I don't mind because I think I prefer using tabs anyway.
Mint My Desk
Key Points grey highlighter
I've wanted a grey highlighter for ages, it matches with my pastels nicely. The shape of the tip is a bit different, you've got to hold it just right or it doesn't quite work properly but it's a decently cheap option.
Paw print paper cutter
I wish I'd bought one of these ages ago, it's so much more practical especially for things like Dutch door layouts and this one was too cute to pass up, and nice to hold.
Memo Me sticky memos
The colours are nice but I do wish they'd had an option for a range of different pastels instead of just single colour gradients. Also I'm not entirely sure it's sticky enough to hold up so we'll see how long they last.
Butterfly Deco stickers
I wanted these for those kind of vintage stamp type aesthetics. They're a bit transparent but I like them!
Perfume bottle sticker pack
Ok these are really cute but I haven't entirely decided how to use them yet. They'll definitely need a background because they're white so they're not really visible just on the paper.
Precise 0.2mm fineliner
I use a fountain pen for all my normal writing but it just doesn't work with a highlighter so this is great for writing calendar dates and other things that I know are likely to get highlighted later on. Plus the nib size is perfect for my tiny handwriting.
Infeelme cockatiel washi tape
I adore birds and my last pet was a beautiful cockatiel baby so whenever I see anything with a tiel on it I simply MUST buy it. This one is so so cute!
Officeworks
J Burrows sticky tabs
I mostly got these to clearly separate my bujo into months and find my place more easily. It seems like they're going to hold up well, I wish they came in pastels though!
Pilot frixion star stamp
I picked this up because I wanted to rate the books I read in the reading log in my bujo and it's the easiest way to do the star ratings. I love these little stamps, I've had the little birthday cake one for ages to show birthdays on the calendar pages.

Can we please get pictures of the new buji, Nikki? Prettty please? x🌸
I got another Ottergami B5 180gsm !!! 🌼✨
Tumblr media
When you look it up on Amazon, the cover of the new one looks very orange, so initially I wasn't sure if I wanted it in that color, but then I saw it on another blog and realized that it's actually a really pretty earth tone (a bit brighter than in my pic) and I really like it!
The dots are a bit darker this time, which I'm not a fan of, but it's not obnoxiously dark and if the page is filled it doesn't stand out so much, so I can overlook that 😂
I won't start using it until July, since I still need to fill up the rest of my current bujo, but I already did the first few pages and am super happy with how it turned out!
Tumblr media
I chose a rather simple design, since I want the first pages not to be overwhelming, so it's mostly black and white, with some red/orange tones to fit with the earthy tones of the journal itself. Drawing the flowers was super fun!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you know Amanda Rach Lee? She does/did the yearly overview like that and I really wanted to try it out. Kind of follows the Dutch door idea and makes the calendar look like a little booklet. I was very nervous when I started this bc there's just so many ways to mess that up and halfway through I was lowkey panicking bc I didn't like how it looked, but as soon as I added the numbers and the flowers I was glad that I did it. 🤸🏼
Tumblr media
And the last thing I did to kind of round up the theme of the orange flowers was one last quote page and an index page that slowly leads away from the orange and to more neutral tones.
The quote is a poem by perry poetry (almost always use those, they're amazing) that had a positive, uplifting feel. Perfect for starting a new bujo 🥰

A Dream of 2023: Techo Kaigi
Journaling became a thing for me this year. After many years of trying to get bullet journaling to work for me it finally stuck. And with that came a whole rush of other things - notebooks, pens, washi tape, a whole online community of planners, tomoe river paper, and now, to finish, a techo kaigi which shows just how deeply I’ve fallen into this journaling hole.
How did 2022 go?
When the year started I was still in my (largely failing) Leuchtturm 1917s. I’d discovered the wonders of dotted pages (I’ve used grid pages for years - everything must line up in my brain). I had a few of them where I’d tried, got a few pages in, and then failed. In particular, I really struggled with setting up the daily page only on the day vs setting up pages in advance and not using them. Then I came across a video from Plant Based Bride called BuJo 101: The Rolling Weekly. And it clicked. This method just clicked. I’d tried similar things. I’d tried very different things. But for some reason it was this very specific layout that worked for me.
I started off trying it for a few weeks in one of the failed Leuchtturm’s with the idea that, if I could stick with it, I could get a fancy journal. And I did stick with it. So I got an A5 Archer & Olive. I’d wanted to start incorporating some art and my preferred medium is watercolour. I needed something that would survive and 160 GSM seemed a good bet.
In this first journal I used the rolling monthlies and wrote down everything I wanted to record. This was my all in one journal. I carried it everywhere. I filled it really quickly. So next time I decided to try a larger journal and started on a B5 Archer & Olive.
Is one journal enough?
At this time, I started to think - wouldn’t it be easier if my collections were in their own books so I could look reference them as a whole. Especially my notes on learning to write. Oh, and a media journal seems a good idea. And maybe I should have a journal for each of my writing projects. And then another journal to index everything. And so one book became many and about halfway through the book it stopped being an all in one. This is fairly common for me. I buy a lot of notebooks! But the core part of the journal was still working. I felt a bit bad about so many books, I’ll admit. Until …
Stationery Brew
Did you know there is a whole group of stationery and journaling people who stream their journaling on Twitch? Well there is! The amazing Stationery Brew stream team was something I came across, quite by accident. And then I found even more cool things. Toastytreat inspired me to get my fountain pens back out. Kittykatcollar showed me where to buy all the cool stationery. Jasminemarieplans made me want to try memory keeping and everyone inspired me to try personal journaling. Celerymin made me want to try copy writing books (which turned out to be really useful). I could carry on forever here - finding a group of people who share your interests has been an amazing experience.
There was one common journal in particular that heavily affected my decisions for 2023. By later in the year I was now using a B5 Notebook Therapy journal (which worked better with my chosen pens and inks). I’d started doing personal journaling in this too. But a lot of people were using planners by Hobonichi. And when I looked I realised that my layouts looked a lot like the ones in those planners. So I brought a Hobonichi. Or 4.
My 2023 planner line up
Daily carry: Hobonichi Weeks Mega
As the year went on I realised that one of the major issues with a 160 GSM B5 notebook is that its big and heavy! So after a little watching of the Youtube I realised I would find a daily carry useful - a small journal I can carry everywhere. A practical planner where I can add everything as I need to. The Weeks also has a lot of blank pages at the back, so I can use this for collections (in the Bullet Journaling style) that I wanted to have with me. I can write ideas for blog posts down on the train, or add a book that someone tells me about.
Bonus feature: in the My 100 page I have written, to replace goals, a set of Achievements (think MMO achievement logs) for the year covering all the areas of my life that I want to improve on - health, some home renovation, journaling, writing, art, blogging. A goal is something you can fail. An achievement is something you get eventually.
Creative and personal journaling: Hobonichi Cousin
As the B5 journals might suggest, I fill a lot of space. I don’t do short writing very well. And the Cousin is what inspired me to buy a Hobonichi. This is where I will do personal journaling, plan my creative activities and goals. I’ll use all the washi and stickers. I’ll write notes and ideas for creative projects. I’ll put some media journaling in there too, when its more about the enjoyment of the media and not learning from the media. This is my place to splurge all the things in my brain across the page.
I have a cover (Night Flamingo) and a cover on cover (Light in the Distance), but to protect the book a little more, I added a MD Codex clear cover to the book, mostly as a defense against cats walking across my journals. And sitting on my journals. While wet. Note - you need the Codex version of the clear cover to fit a Cousin.
Health journal: Hobonichi Weeks
I wanted to put a bit of extra focus on my health after a bad year, so I have a separate mini journal for that. I need to track quite a few things and wanted to be able to look back on the year and see how some of the things I was trying and how well they worked. I’ve been messing around with the format for this a little, but it seems to be working so far. At least as far as encouraging me to record my health. Its not encouraging me to eat better or do more exercise. But that’s a bit much to ask of a little book.
I have a got a cover on cover on order for this. For now it doesn’t leave my desk. I think I would like a cover that lets me put both Weeks inside it.
Commonplace book: Hobonichi Journal
While i was researching the ways that people used their journals I came across a video called how i use my notebooks | hobonichi avec, commonplace by Megan Rhiannon which showed a commonplace methodology that I really liked and I adapted that a little to be my commonplace book. I liked the idea of putting it in the same cover with the Cousin, so I grabbed a Hobonichi journal and just loved it. I use a lot of sheening inks and they look amazing on the tomoe river paper. I added an MD clear cover to this too. In fact, all of my journals have one apart from the Weeks (which has the Hobonichi cover on cover instead). I really don’t trust those cats.
Writing journal: Hobonichi Journal
NaNoWriMo hit and I made my third attempt at completing this. I decided to grab a Hobonichi journal for this too. Its light to carry, its a pleasure to write in. I need as few barriers as possible for NaNo success (I need to handwrite or I get lost editing). It worked. I won NaNo for the first time this year. So I’m going to stick with this. Instead of one per project, I’ll keep one just for writing.
The smooth paper that works so well with fountain pens is ideal for this. To write, I need to be able to write quickly. The tomoe river paper allows me to do this. Its smooth and gives little resistance. But it doesn’t have the excessively slick feel of other papers like Rhodia. As I am using two of these journals, I added stickers to each to let me tell them apart without having to open them.
Bullet Journal: MD Codex
I had been planning to have no bullet journal. But then I started watching Youtube videos from CoffeeMonsterzCo and saw her mini bullet journal. This made me realize that bullet journaling could still be useful. And it can help overcome the limitation of the Hobonichi - what to do if I want to write more than a page in a given day.
This is, therefore, my ‘overflow’ journal. I’ll only use it on days where I need more space. To break down tasks, create lists to complete, record things that don’t fit in elsewhere. Or to record little notes and things that don’t quite fit elsewhere.
I was already using the MD Codex to do creative planning, so I reformatted those planning notes into a bullet journal format. I need to find something colourful to put on the front as MD journals are incredibly boring.
Work journal: Hobonichi Original
I like to keep my work notes completely separate, so I got a different journal for this. At first I was going to use an MD, but I’ve decided I really don’t like MD paper. And it will save me time to have a journal that is pre-set rather than bullet journaling.
This is the riskiest journal here. I have all sorts of trouble finding a work journal that works for me. If this fails, I’ll repurpose it and go back to a Bullet Journal approach for work.
This is the Navy cover with the Light in the Distance Cover on Cover.
And thats it. I have a couple of Stalogy notebooks kicking around - I use the half size ones for making messy notes so I can keep all my journals clear of them. And I have nearly completed Tarot Journal in another Notebook Therapy B5 to finish this year. This is the only case of ‘one-notebook-per-project’ that worked out for me. I’ve collected insights from different place and use this book as my reference instead of all the other individual ones.

sunday, august 6th, 2023 | 36/100 days of productivity
work was really busy this week and I was exhausted at the end of each day, so I did basically no studying this week 😅 that's okay though! I still have three weeks left before I take the exam. I also did pretty well on the practice test so I'm not panicking about failing. I just need to finish my index for the last three sections this week, review the labs, take another practice test, and then review any final topics that are giving me trouble!
today's productivity:
planned next week in my bujo
did chores (laundry, vacuuming, cleaning the bathroom)
spent just over 2 hours reviewing sections 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3
today's self-care:
I finished all my tasks early and I have the whole evening to chill!
I made pancakes for dinner & I doubled the recipe so I'll have leftovers for breakfast this week 🥞
I met my goal for drinking water!

The inside cover of my 2023 bullet journal edition 2 with post-its and washi tape. I have decided to lean in to all my Moomin statio and declare it a Tove Jansson inspired notebook.
The quote: “…the new day was already used, a little soiled by mistaken thoughts and makeshift undertakings.” is from the Jansson short story “The Squirrel.” I thought it fit with the constant struggle against perfectionism.
The other squares I eventually filled in with quotes from the past year’s readings or from other beloved thinkers/creators.
Anyone else busy in bujo planning mode?
I just went back to fill in the blank pages of my current bullet journal. Once Fall term started I got buried in work and lost track of everything. So I paged through the last 3 months and wrote up end-of-month summaries then finished coloring in December’s spreads, updated my index and got started on the 2022 in review page.
Next year’s first few pages/set-up is very similar to this year’s. Strange how I don’t feel the typical need to trash everything and start over. I liked how my 2022 went, in spite of everything derailing sometime in August. I feel satisfied with my efforts. In fact, I’m going to try to do a little bit less next year. Take a page out of Oliver Burkeman’s book, Four Thousand Weeks, and just choose less big rocks.
I don’t know yet if I will have the artistic energy to pre-make all my spreads like I did this year or just take it day by day/week by week. Depends on how December/January goes.
Oh, and I hyperfocused on drawing a labyrinth because that’s my word for 2023:

Brain, we should really talk about this…
