diluc
Before you came along, Diluc was absolutely certain that he took good care of himself. He felt fine, at least, so didn’t that mean something? Apparently not because when you finally moved in with Diluc, you were appalled at his choices. Firstly, Diluc had a horrible diet. You understood he was a grown man, but eating four steaks at once couldn’t be good for anyone. Secondly, Diluc only washed his hands when he used the bathroom. You nearly threw up when he sat down for dinner the first time without even bothering to clean himself up. So, it really wasn’t a surprise when he got super sick.
Clara came barreling into your legs, “Mama! Daddy can’t talk!”
“Really? Where is he?”
“Outside,” Clara said flatly, “He sounds like a tiny little kitten.”
You laughed at your daughter and threw the dish towel onto the counter. You followed Clara outside to where your husband was sitting. He was rubbing the sides of his throat with a frown on his face. He heard your footsteps and smiled over his shoulder, “Hi, Honey.”
Diluc’s voice was hoarse and quiet and, based on the look on his face, painful.
“Got a frog in your throat?” You teased, “What’s the matter?”
Your husband shrugged. “I was fine and then I wasn’t,” He said simply. “Now my throat is on fire and I feel light headed.”
Before he could insist he could still work, you gathered your biggest baby into your arms and marched him inside the house. Until he got better, he was on bed rest. No exceptions.
You made sure the kids stayed far away from their father – the last thing you needed was the twins getting sick alongside Diluc. It was hard enough to take care of one miserable human, you didn’t need three. You thought about sending the twins to stay with Kaeya for a few days but then you remembered he was helping Albedo with research in Dragonspine for the week. Everything was going to be fine – how hard could it be to pick up Diluc’s slack?
Diluc slept most of the week. He threw out his usual apparel for sweats and rags, something he usually wouldn’t be caught dead in, and made a nest for himself on the couch. You were in charge of cooking, cleaning, and picking up after the kids. You nearly forget to get them from daycare twice.
But other than that, everything was going fine. That is, until dinner one night when the family cat jumped up onto the counter and spilled an entire bottle of milk all over the counter. Your recipe wouldn’t be the same without it and as much as you didn’t want to, you knew you needed to run into town.
“Diluc, wake up.”
You shook your husband gently until his eyes fluttered open. They were bloodshot and tired but he curled his face towards your face, “Hmm?”
“I need to run to the market. Can you watch the kids?”
Diluc hummed again, forcing himself to sit up. He looked so fragile and you felt awful asking him to do this. “Sure thing,” He said groggily.
“Thank you, ‘Luc. I’ll be fast.” You kissed your sick lover and grabbed your jacket before heading out the door.
It didn’t take long for the kids to wander downstairs in search of dinner. After realizing that you weren’t home and there wasn’t any dinner, the four year olds waltzed into the living room. They knew they were supposed to stay away from Diluc but they missed his cuddles too much.
“Are you still sick?” Clara asked, climbing beside Diluc and startling him. “Can we snuggle before Mama comes home?”
Diluc hesitated. He didn’t want to get the twins sick but…
“We can,” He said quietly, “Don’t get sick, alright?”
Clara giggled, “Okay, Daddy!”
Diluc noticed his son standing awkwardly and held out his arm, “Come on, buddy.” Isaac jumped onto the couch and curled into his father’s side. Before too long, Diluc found himself dozing off.
Isaac looked over at his sister once Diluc had fallen asleep, “Is Daddy always going to be sick?” He whispered.
“I dunno,” Clara responded, “I hope not. I like when he picks me up and pretends I’m a birdie flying through the sky.”
Isaac nodded in agreement and looked down. Being only four, his little mind wandered too fast to rail back in sometimes. Without even realizing it, tears were welling in his eyes and he was gripping Diluc’s shirt with fervor.
He sniffled and buried his face in Diluc’s chest causing his father to stir awake again. “What’s going on?” He asked, his eyes adjusting to the light .
“Daddy, don’t leave me!” Isaac cried. He held onto Diluc like never before.
Confusion flashed across Diluc’s face, “Why would I leave you?”
“‘Cause you're sick! And sick people die!”
Taken aback, Diluc pulled his son onto his lap. “Where did you hear that from?” He wondered, running his hands up and down the now-sobbing child’s back. Through tears, Isaac recounted where he heard the story. Diluc shushed him gently, “Not every sick person dies, ‘Sic. Daddy just has a cold and is going to get better in a few days.”
“Really?” Isaac asked.
Diluc nodded, “Really.” He kissed Isaac’s forehead and pulled Clara onto his lap. The kids barely fit anymore but Diluc held them with strong arms.
When you came back from the market holding a bag of groceries, your heart melted at the sight of all three of them curled up together. And when the twins woke up later with sore throats, you didn’t have it in you to be angry.
kaeya
When Kaeya deemed his daily commissions safe, sometimes he brought Calla with him. The four year old loved following her Daddy around Mondstadt while he did what he needed to. One day, Kaeya needed to clean out the horse stables and brought along his daughter. She climbed on the bulks of hay and talked to herself.
Calla wasn’t a big fan of the horse. He was big and scary and, yeah, he was pretty but she could look at him from a distance. Besides, her Daddy was busy brushing the horse and Calla would just get in the way.
The little girl was busy pretending she was a pirate when the horse whinnied loudly and Kaeya grunted. Calla whisked around to see Kaeya fall backwards, clutching at his chest in pain. “Daddy!” Calla yelled, running down to her father.
Kaeya slumped against the wooden stall, his breathing erratic. Everytime he inhaled, he was met with a sharp pain that cut off his breath.
“Are you okay?” Calla asked, concerned.
“I’m okay, Princess,” Kaeya mumbled. That was a total lie, of course, since the horse had just kicked Kaeya square in the chest. He was sure some of his ribs were broken by the impact.
A nearby Knight heard the commotion and poked his head inside the stalls. “Everything okay, Captain?” He asked. He rushed over to Kaeya and Calla stepped back. The younger Knight helped Kaeya to his feet and looped an arm around his shoulders so they could make it back to the infirmary in town. Calla kicked her feet behind them, an uneasy feeling growing in her stomach the whole time.
She had to wait outside while Kaeya was being looked at by Barbara. Calla crossed her arms and frowned. “Stupid horse…”
The four year old didn’t even realize she was crying until droplets of water raced down her cheeks and landed on her clenched fists. She reached up and rubbed away her tears. Why was she crying? She wasn’t the one who got hurt.
“Are you sad, Pretty Girl?”
Calla looked up to see her father standing in front of her. He wasn’t wearing a shirt so Calla could see the horrible bruise splintering over his chest. Calla, being the stubborn toddler she was, shook her head wildly and refused to look at Kaeya.
He stepped forward until he was right in front of her, then he dropped to his knees with a groan. Kaeya reached a hand up to Calla’s cheek and brushed away another tear with the pad of his thumb. “See? I’m okay…there’s nothing to cry about.”
Calla fell forward into her father’s arms and he hoisted her up onto his hip. Calla made sure to wrap her arms around his neck so he wouldn’t be in any pain.
“Daddy, you got hit really hard,” Calla said. “Like, really hard.”
Kaeya chuckled, “I know. It really hurt.”
“Your horsie is mean!” She added. Kaeya only nodded in agreement.
childe
Nikolai was used to seeing his dad “working” – nothing really fazed him anymore. By the time he was seven, he had seen Childe shoot an arrow through so many Hilichurls that he was used to violence. But this? This was new.
The now-eight year old was sitting on a nearby rock watching Childe clear out a camp of Hilichurls with some new Fatui recruits. One of them, named Marco, stayed behind and watched over Nikolai. And he was happy to sit and watch – his Daddy was so cool and he wished he could cheer him on everyday.
Nikolai ended up zoning out but voices coming nearby gained his attention again. He jumped to his feet, ready to jump into Childe’s arms and talk about how awesome he was, but a group of men rushed past him.
What he saw was absolutely terrible.
Childe was surrounded by the new recruits and Nikolai stuck his head between two of them, staring at his father in shock. There was blood dripping from his face and gathering in his outstretched hands. Nikolai’s eyes traced the source of blood and he grimaced at the mangled, broken mess that was his father’s nose.
“Daddy?” He asked quietly.
“Everything’s fine, Nikky,” Childe said quickly, “Just stay with Marco.”
Nikolai frowned but stepped back, letting the circle close. Marco took Nikolai’s hand and led him back over to where he was sitting before but the eight year old pouted and refused to sit down. “Who hurt Daddy?” He demanded.
Marco shrugged, “I’m not sure.”
“Was it one of them?” Nikolai pointed an accusatory finger at the recruits and Marco shook his head.
“No, no,” Marco continued, “And even if it was, it was an accident.”
Meanwhile, Childe was in the middle of getting healed by one of the recruits. He was an awful healer but anything was appreciated right now. On the battlefield, a recruit had gotten struck down by a Mitachurl and when Childe intervened to help him up, the Mitachurl rammed into his face and busted his nose. “This is a bloodbath,” Childe winced.
“Sorry, sir,” The recruit answered, “I’m almost done.”
After using Hydro to clean up the blood, Childe brushed his fingers against the wound. “How bad does it look?” He asked, then rephrased the question, “How bad is it going to scare my boy?”
Some of the recruits glanced at each other. “It’s pretty bad,” One of them finally said.
Childe internally groaned and clapped his hands together, “Alright, men, that’s a wrap for today. Get some rest and be ready for tomorrow.” The recruits bowed their heads briefly before taking off in different directions. And finally, Childe headed over to Nikolai.
The boy was secured tightly in Marco’s arms, his head slumped on his shoulder and his eyes half-lidded with sleep. He had really worn himself out over the past twenty minutes. His young mind kept running to all the horrible possibilities that could have happened – like Childe losing his nose forever!
Marco handed the sleepy boy to Childe. “Hey, buddy, are you awake?”
Nikolai whined, “Daddy?”
Childe hummed, “It’s me. All better. See?”
Groggily, Nikolai pulled back to look at Childe’s face. His nose still looked weird and broken but at least the blood was gone. Nikolai tightened his arms around Childe’s neck and buried his face in his neck.
“There was a lot of blood,” Nikolai said, frowning.
“I know,” Childe said sympathetically, “I’m sorry I scared you. Ready to head home?”
Nikolai yawned, “Mmm.” They said goodbye to Marco and started the walk back to Liyue harbor where you would be waiting with a wrapped towel to smack and scold Childe for bringing your son to Fatui meetings.
zhongli
Upon returning from a weekend getaway, Zhongli sent you home to unpack and he went to pick Jia up from the Adepti. The six year old loved spending time with Ganyu and Xiao but was more than ready to go home.
“Did you have fun?” Zhongli asked.
Jia nodded her head, “Uh-huh. Auntie Ganyu painted my nails.” She showed off her fingernails, which were now pink and sparkly, and added, “And Uncle Xiao helped me pick a really tall flower for Mama. But then the wind blew it away!”
“That’s unfortunate,” Zhongli said conversationally. He was complimenting his daughter about something when he heard a loud shriek from nearby. He turned his body in the direction of the sound and stiffened when he saw a Geovishap Hatchling barreling towards them. He barely had time to summon his shield and get Jia behind him before the monster crashed into them, knocking both of them off their feet.
Jia screamed out and Zhongli abandoned his own shield, projecting it onto Jia fully. He summoned his weapon and when the monster spun towards him again, he speared the Geovishap. But not before the monster released its claws and pulled them down Zhongli’s chest. The Geovishap fell to the ground in a pile of scales and Zhongli groaned, his chest burning with unseen fire.
Warmth was spreading down his front and he knew that was bleeding. Jia’s shield cracked and dissipated and the little girl cried loudly.
“Are you alright?” Zhongli asked, pulling Jia into his arms. “Does anywhere hurt?”
Jia shook her head, “No, Daddy, I’m fine.”
Zhongli took a deep breath and shifted, trying to stand back up. He grunted when he felt white-hot pain all over his body. It was times like these that he remembered he was no longer the almighty Morax – he was just Zhongli.
“Daddy, you’re hurt!” Jia cried.
“It’s fine,” Zhongli countered. He knew he wasn’t fine, though. His shirt and jacket had been ripped open and his skin was bruised and bleeding. The talon scars marred his skin and with the breath of a whisper, Zhongli said, “Adeptus…Xiao…”
Xiao was there in a matter of seconds. His face fell when he saw the state of Zhongli but he did everything he could to gather the ex-Geo Archon, and his daughter, into his arms and teleport with the wind to the Liyue Infirmary. Immediately, healers took Zhongli away from Jia so they could bandage him up.
“I want to stay with Daddy!” Jia cried out, squirming in Xiao’s hold.
Xiao didn’t know what to say. “You can’t,” He said flatly. This only made Jia cry harder and she thrashed against his body. She kept crying for Zhongli the entire time they were at the infirmary and the entire walk home. In fact, the only reason Jia stopped crying was because she had, eventually, fallen asleep in Xiao’s arms.
The next morning, after Xiao filled you in on everything, you went back to the infirmary with a now-calm Jia. She was still shaken up but back to her usual, quiet self.
Zhongli was awake and sitting up in a cot when you came to visit. You frowned at the state of your husband, “You poor thing. How are you feeling?”
“Like a boulder hit me,” Zhongli said with a weak smile. He laughed at his own joke. His eyes ghosted to Jia, “How has she been?”
You shrugged, “She’s been since last night and hasn't said much this morning. But she’s worried about you.” You brushed back Jia’s hair and she whined, curling into your hand. “Do you want to say ‘hi’ to Daddy, Jia?”
The little girl stirred before groggily sitting up, “Hi, Daddy.”
“Good morning, Starlight,” Zhongli said gently.
It took Jia a moment to realize who was talking to her but she did, she jumped off of your lap and flew onto the side of Zhongli’s bed. She was wary of getting too close to him, “Daddy, I thought something really bad was going to happen to you.”
“I’m just fine,” Zhongli continued, “You were very brave, you know.”
Jia smiled proudly, “Really?”
Zhongli grinned, “Really. The bravest little girl I know.” He leaned over and kissed the top of her head, “Nothing bad will ever happen to me as long as you’re around, got it?”
“Then nothing bad will ever happen to me as long as you’re around, too,” Jia added, grinning back.
“Good. I like that plan.”
