The Chilling Effect of the Polar Vortex: A Winter Phenomenon Strikes Regina, Saskatchewan, and Beyond
Shaina Tranquilino
January 20, 2024
Tumblr media
As winter settles in across the Northern Hemisphere, intense cold snaps and frosty weather systems are not uncommon. However, every few years, a particularly extreme weather event occurs that captures headlines worldwide – the polar vortex. Recently, this frigid phenomenon has unleashed its icy grip on numerous regions, including Regina, Saskatchewan in Canada. In this blog post, we will explore what exactly the polar vortex is, how it affects our lives, and why it's important to understand this chilling meteorological occurrence.
Understanding the Polar Vortex:
The polar vortex is an area of low pressure situated near the Earth's poles. It is characterized by strong winds circulating counterclockwise around a center of extremely cold air. These winds form a tight spiral pattern high up in the atmosphere known as the jet stream.
Normally confined to the Arctic region during winter months, occasionally these powerful winds weaken or shift southward due to complex atmospheric dynamics. This results in a sudden intrusion of bitterly cold arctic air into lower latitudes — a phenomenon experts refer to as a "polar outbreak" or "polar vortex event."
The Impact on Regina and Beyond:
Regina, located in central Canada's prairies and often referred to as one of the coldest cities in the country, experienced firsthand the brutal effects of the polar vortex. As temperatures plummeted well below freezing point (reaching as low as -50°C), everyday life ground to a halt. Transportation was disrupted or delayed, and residents were advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
But Regina wasn't alone; other parts of North America also fell under the influence of this winter nightmare. States such as Texas faced unprecedented snowfall and record-breaking low temperatures that crippled infrastructure unprepared for extreme winter conditions. Similarly, Europe witnessed heavy snowfalls and sub-zero temperatures, causing travel chaos and affecting millions of people.
Coping with the Vortex:
During a polar vortex event, it is crucial to prioritize safety and take appropriate measures to protect oneself from the extreme cold. Staying indoors, dressing in layers, ensuring adequate heating, and avoiding unnecessary exposure are all vital precautions. Furthermore, maintaining communication with neighbours, especially vulnerable individuals such as the elderly or those without proper shelter, becomes essential.
Understanding Climate Change's Role:
While it may seem counterintuitive that global warming could cause severe cold spells like the polar vortex event, climate change plays a role in its occurrence. The melting Arctic ice due to rising global temperatures weakens the jet stream, causing it to become wavier and allowing frigid air masses to escape the poles more frequently. As a result, these events can intensify due to climate change but remain sporadic and unpredictable.
The recent polar vortex event has left Regina and various parts of the world shivering in an icy grip. Understanding this meteorological phenomenon helps us recognize its impact on our daily lives while appreciating the importance of preparedness during such extreme weather events. By taking necessary precautions and fostering community support, we can navigate through these frosty times together until warmer days return.
Note: It is important to keep up with local news sources and official guidelines regarding any current or future polar vortex events for accurate information and safety instructions in your specific region.

A few chainette yarns I saw at Fabricville:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
▪️Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, worsted cotton chainette. Really looks like a DK to me, but I've never used chainette, so what do I know? Pretty soft for 100% cotton, very light. I'd like to try it. I wonder if it has more give than a plied cotton yarn like Patons Grace.
▪️As far as I can tell, Bernat Bundle Up and Lion Brand Feels Like Butta are identical: worsted polyester chainette. The Bernat might be the teeniest bit fuzzier, and calls for a 5mm needle instead of 4.5mm. Both are very soft, ridiculously light, look like DKs, and come in super boring colours. The Bernat put up is bigger. ETA: According to Ravelry, the Bundle Up is a worsted and Feels Like Butta is an aran. Might be nice to make a little cap to wear around the house to keep my shaved head warm.

daily movement
Academic institutions fail us when they provide work space that doesn't include access to nature. An example are office spaces without windows to let in sunshine. Environmental health research has so much evidence that it's important to our health to have daily sun exposure as well as exercise and time spent in nature. It's not a luxury but a necessity. But I am not going to change office space today or tomorrow. So instead:
I promise to move for at least one hour every single day. Today (Feb 15, 2023) marks day 1, when I took an hour long walk around my neighborhood. Granted it was sunny and the weather hovered around mid/high-50s F. I know I will not want to do this when it is rainy or below 50 degrees F. But I should, and since I promised myself, so I will.

Completely random post today because it's a thought that crossed my mind and I wonder if other may share the sentiment.
Have you ever looked at a hobby thing / collection of yours (mine are using circular knitting looms to make hats even though I have 3 already and collecting blankets and jackets), and thought you shouldn't keep doing more because you have a bunch of stuff lying around?
That sentiment shriveled up like the weeds outside when it dropped into the 20s Fahrenheit overnight here. It was 22 when I left for class this morning. I'm so grateful I collect jackets and have an abundance of hats.
I have extra blankets to toss onto my bed to huddle in like a gremlin in my cold bedroom because I'd rather burrow under a mountain of blankets than raise my thermostat. (My electric bill is high enough as is). I can also share said blankets with my roommates. My partner steals one of my coats regularly cause I had a leather jacket phase and had 3 at one time.
Also, happy beginning of November everyone. Bundle up if its cold, hug your loved ones (chosen or otherwise), and have a great day.

metroid is about isolation
but metroid is also about learning to do trick jumps from random animals who celebrate when you get it right, and about saving them even as the planet shudders under your feet
and metroid is about lowering your gun when you meet the last of a species who's only just hatched, and gently holding out your hand
and metroid is about accidentally calling the name of someone you care about, who you thought you'd lost, and finding out they've been with you the whole time
and about a little scribble of a child with their parents tucked into the corner of a grand mural
and about the gifts left behind by others because they may be gone before they get to meet you, but that won't stop them from helping you
metroid is about love actually
