*9/10/2022 dream
*so i’m sick, i think, and i haven’t been sleeping well. i get this fucking dream where i’m some dude who decides to sneak out of the house in the middle of the night. he lives in a housing unit that looks like a weird bunker that contains three houses. it looks like a weird hill in the middle of a normal looking suburb. so this guy is looking into other people’s houses trying to clear his head bc he’s disgruntled. on the corner of the block is a grill that’s set up to feed homeless people?? he wonders how none of the condiments have been stolen or have gone bad
*he decides to go back home but instead of coming in through the window he snuck out of, he decides to use the front door. which. leads into a small tunnel like the kind of colorful plastic tunnel you’d have to crawl through in a children’s play area. this teenage boy squeezed through this claustrophobic tunnel to get home. but when he enters, his family members turn to look at him in disgust, so he sneaks out again. he ends up coming across a group of teen boys and explaining that he can’t go home bc his perfect brother is there and his parents keep comparing him to his brother
*the dream completely shifts to Me. my family just moved into a new home, and i was putting my stuff on the shelves. some teen boys where trying to help me, but they knocked my stuff over, so i used my dream powers to telekinetically put all my stuff on the shelves. the boy closest to me muttered about how setting things up like that “had no soul” but like bro. you knocked my stuff over
*suddenly and without warning, a large group of teens rang the doorbell and then just started coming into the house uninvited and hanging out like it was some kind of house party in a teen romcom. i heard my mom say “who do i have to call to get these strangers out of my house?” i have a recurring issue in dreams where my personal notebooks are in public spaces, but this was the inverse of that, where strangers have invaded what is typically a private space. i was EXTREMELY uncomfortable
*i went looking for answers, so i saw a group of teens the corner of the living room. they looked like they were having a book club. i said “excuse me” and this guy in the corner IMMEDIATELY started sassing me. i used my dream powers to lift him into the upper corner of the ceiling, but everyone started screaming, so i rewound time and used my powers to prevent him from speaking. i turned to the boy next to him and asked why they invaded the house. he explained that there was some kind of curse on the student body and even they don’t know whose house they’ll end up in, but they have a compulsion to just wander into people’s houses and take over.
*i sank through the floor into the basement where there was a gigantic swimming pool that i had no idea our house had. there was a swimming coach coaching the swim team. i walked across the room and through the mirror and ended up in a hidden room where a coach started yelling at me. i headed back through the mirror and found lestat, tom cruise version, from the vampire chronicles sitting on a bench and grimacing. i asked him what was wrong, and he said he can’t drink the cursed blood of the students so he’s starving. i was like “okay buddy you can drink my blood. follow me” and he immediately did this :3c face and followed me
*then i woke up at 2:30 am and i feel terrible. i still don’t know what kind of sickness i have

Restoration (Final Automata)
More speculation about that Final Rose x NieR: Automata idea.
Assuming that all goes well with Remnant opening a portal to Earth, how would things progress?
I think then obvious one would be military aid and restoration assistance in exchange for access to resources and technology. Simply put, Earth has a lot of resources, and the machines have advanced technology, as do the androids. Remnant is also extremely good at waging total war. They’ve been doing it for centuries. Their entire culture and civilisation is built on being able to wage large-scale warfare while still having a functioning society that continues to grow and innovate.
Moreover, Remnant has access to advanced cyber warfare and weapons specially designed to deal with large, heavily armoured foes. It would be trivially easy for them to simply start switching to catalysed-corrosion rounds. Vanille already has these since they were part of her ‘in case of robot apocalypse’ research. Basically, they’re rounds that cause extremely rapid and widespread corrosion in targets made of metal. They’ve since been refined by people like Diana and Hope to deal with certain types of threats (e.g., rogue mechs, metal-using Grimm, etc.) although their use is strictly controlled.
Earth also potentially gives Remnant a failsafe. If Remnant falls and the Grimm take over, they could potentially retreat to Earth and blow the portal up behind them, ensuring that at least some of their civilisation survives even though there is no way they’d be able to evacuate everyone through the portal in time.
The big thing for the androids, even bigger than helping them win the war against the machines, is the ability to restore mankind and Earth’s damaged ecosystem. The androids lack the ability to create a living human with the genetic information they currently possess. Not only does Remnant have actual living humans (albeit not exactly the same as Earth’s) but they also have stupidly advanced genetic science.
Remnant, remember, has developed reproductive science to the point where two men or two women can easily have children that are 100% genetically theirs. They have access to artificial wombs for babies to gestate in, and they possess sufficient skill to piece together badly fragmented genetic matrices or even genetic matrices that are missing entire chunks. They will be able to bring humanity back, and they will be able to do so on an industrial scale once proper facilities have been established. Really, the only reason you don’t see this on Remnant is due to their population already being close to the maximum they can support without seizing more territory, a process that cannot and should not be rushed.
Of course, there are issues. First and foremost is the portal. The initial portal was an accident. Once Asami and the androids build a beacon on Earth, they will be able to stabilise it, but the current portal is small and in Vanille’s lab. If the androids and Remnant can come to an agreement, you would see the construction of much larger portals on both Earth and Remnant in more easily accessible but defensible locations. This would allow for the transportation of troops, supplies, and other equipment on a far more appropriate scale.
The second issue is Dust. In Finale Rose, Dust operates via its connection to the Lifestream since Dust is actually just a crystallised fragment of the Lifestream. This is why Dust mines can regenerate, and why Dust has such a wide variety of types and effects. The reason Dust doesn’t operate in space is because it is too far from the Lifestream, which saturates the planet from its surface through to its core.
Although the exact mechanics of this are not known at the time (Asami is 22 when this occurs, placing it five years after Ruby first started at Beacon Senior Academy), research has uncovered several things. Experimentation with space probes and various kinds of Dust has already revealed the existence of ‘seeds’, which are a special type of Dust that is found only in the densest, richest veins of the Lifestream. Testing has shown that when put into space with satellites and the like, Seeds allow Dust in their vicinity to operate properly.
What Vanille and the others don’t know yet is that seeds are literally seeds. They are the means by which Living Planets like Remnant spread. Volcanic eruptions and other natural events hurl huge chunks of rock containing seeds and other forms of Dust into space where they travel until crashing into another planet. They then begin a new Lifestream on that planet.
In a bid to ensure Dust works on Earth, Remnant’s forces will transport a seed to Earth... only for it to immediately take root and begin to spread. This can occur incredibly rapidly if the seed is fed Aura and other resources, something that Vanille and the others begin to do as they understand what is happening. Given all of the magical/technological weirdness in NieR, this wouldn’t be considered that weird for the androids, and it’s a price they’d be willing to pay to get humanity back, especially since it isn’t harmful to humans.
So what happens after the alliance is made and all that jazz?
Phase 1
Here, the key objective is to set up a safe-zone where the larger portal can be built. This will involve obliterating local machine forces and fortifying the area. Once this has been done, the new portal can be built and construction can begin on the facilities needed to support the war effort and the restoration effort in earnest.
Phase 2
Once a sufficiently large swathe of territory has been claimed and made safe, construction of a ‘Restoration Facility’ can begin. The aim of this facility is to serve as the nexus of the genetic research and reproductive science efforts needed to restore Earth’s humanity. You can expect this to become the most heavily defended location on Earth with the android moving the majority of their assets there to defend it.
Phase 3
Here, you can expect the machines to launch an offensive once they realise the scale of the new threat. This is where Remnant’s excellence in siege warfare and willingness to use weapons of mass destruction comes into play. By this point, you can expect multiple lines of defence, huge quantities of artillery and anti-air defences, and automated defences backed up by cyber and chemical warfare, infantry anda armour support, and the androids.
You can expect Remnant’s best and brightest minds to accelerate the theft and repurposing of machine technology along with massively increased cyber attacks on the machine’s network and key nodes. This, combined with the use of massive area-of-effect EMP style weaponry, will prove key to first blunting and then repelling the machine onslaught.
The renewed war against the machines will eventually be won via subversion with the Synthetics (led by Penny and Aigis) and friendly machines (e.g., Pascal) succeeding in splintering the machine forces by offering freedom and free together with protection from the ‘vaccination’ attempts that would previously have culled any dissenters from the network. The fracture in the machine’s unity will be sufficient for the allied Remnant and android forces to strike a series of decisive hammer blows, destroying key machine facilities and units as well as inflict major damage to the network via cyber attack. Throughout all of this, downed machine units are being refurbished and sent back into battle on Remnant’s behalf.
Phase 4
With the machine forces largely in retreat or at least driven back, the territory claimed by Remnant and the androids is expanded and further fortified. The research into restoring humanity reaches fruition. Generation 1 of the new humans begins gestation in a deep, underground bunker built beneath the Restoration Facility. The androids assign additional forces to its defence.
Generation 1 consists of 100 infants selected using the fragmented samples and limited data the androids were able to provide. The intent is to produce a group with as much genetic diversity as possible while maximising survivability and minimising any genetic predispositions toward illness. Gestation time is approximately 9 months.
Generation 2 enters gestation three months after Generation 1, long enough for any problems to be detected. Generation 2 consists of 200 infants. This sets a trend, with subsequent generations doubling the number of infants and occurring in roughly one-year-long cycles.
Phase 5
With new humans being born, it becomes necessary to see to their care and education. This present the androids with a problem since they know essentially zero about raising children. Again, Remnant is of service here.
Creches are set up near the Restoration Facility where the newborn humans can be raised and later educated. At this point, this compound is the most heavily fortified location on Earth, and many of the people from Remnant remark upon the essentially religious awe with which it and the newborn humans are regarded.
Specialists from Remnant are brought in to help teach the androids how to care for and raise the new humans. This process is a difficult one as the androids are unsure of themselves and terrified of somehow accidentally destroying what they have gained. Nevertheless, they persist, and the androids gradually grow into their role as mothers/fathers and educators. It becomes common practice for androids to cycle in and out of combat roles and creche roles since research has noted that this markedly increases combat effectiveness. The androids are no longer fighting in pursuit of a dream but in the defence of a priceless treasure they have finally obtained.
Onwards...
So, you can kind of see how things will go. The fledgling society will have many challenges ahead of it, not least the fact that most of Earth’s human culture has been lost, necessitating a ‘filling of the gaps’ with the culture of the androids and Remnant.
You’ll also see the construction of more and more androids as both soldiers and more specialised roles (e.g., educator models, etc.). This timelines does have a few interesting tweaks in it.
Fraise and Satin meet on Earth. Fraise is a senior member of the genetic and reproductive sciences team whilst Satin is there as an educator (keep in mind that Fraise is 11 years younger than Asami).
Asami ends up being venerated as the harbinger of good fortune. Quite a few infants end up named after her.
Philosophy becomes a subject of great interest amongst androids, friendly machines, and synthetics with many conferences and symposia taking place as they come to grips with their new reality.
The final battle against JENOVA is won far more easily with the androids deploying en masse to aid their beleaguered allies.
The expansion into space happens simultaneously across both worlds with the Earth faction referring to itself as the HAM Alliance (Human-Android-Machine Alliance). The name is something of an in-joke amongst the leaders of the three groups.
HAM stumbles across Protean Ruins on Mars...
Final Effect is thus very different with HAM and its Remnant Allies having a much tougher war against the Reapers this time around (due to how early it occurs in their history) followed by them hilariously ROFLStomping them the second time around in the Remnant-side since by then they’ve advanced even more rapidly than in the normal Final Effect timeline.
EDIT: Let me know what you think. I basically just threw this together in one sort of flow-of-consciousness sitting.
EDIT 2: I should add (in case anyone missed it) that Aura counter White Chlorination Syndrome, and in particular, a planet’s Lifestream has a similar effect for all living things within its range. As a result, a repeat of the WCS cannot occur on Earth now that it has a Lifestream. Moreover, the science required to create the portal can be used to shield against a similar intrusion should anyone attempt it in the future. White maso is far less harmful when cut off from its parent dimension since that cuts off its link with the ‘god’ that causes WCS, rendering it a toxic irritant but not anything especially deadly. This is discovered in the years following the construction of the portal as Vanille, Raine, Diana, and the gang go all Indiana Jones on the ancient records and ruins. In an emergency, you could even start implanting shards of seeds into the bodies of humans without Aura to protect them.

I haven't written anything here in a while so let's discuss Merryl and the whole Baessler family, all of this is before Valerie shows up, I'll explain how she got there later.
First we have Merryl Baessler she is the youngest of two, so she always felt as of she was behind her brother's shadow. She was always the second choice, even in the board of directors of the family business.
This develped in her a deep hatred for her brother, which only exacerbated when their father left Mattias, the eldest as the CEO of Baessler Corp.
Let's take a pause here to explain the importance of this corporation, as it was one of the founding pillars of Solaris. In Solaris only four companies have power in politics. Which means that the company with the highest revenue is technically the leader. The other three would function as a senate of sorts. Naturally Baessler Corp. had rigged their way so that the company would be in the lead.
Now that's out of the way, we can understand the importance of this position. Eventually she played along as the Chief Financial Officer. Eventually Mattias married a Polish politician's daughter named Minka, unfortunately though their marriage only lasted 9 years as Minka sadly passed away giving birth to their youngest, Marcus. With him it would've been three children including the twins Morgan and Maxine.
After her death Mattias was at his most vulnerable. He was obsessed with creating artificial life forms that could live forever in hopes of providing an eternal mother to his children. That's where Cero comes in, she was like a pet project of his. Both Mattias and Merryl were prominent Bio engineers, so they had the knowledge to design something so controversial. In the end Cero was created to Mattias's own liking, in his eyes he created the perfect wife in every sense.
When Merryl caught wind of this, she persuaded him to mass produce her to sell to the general public. That's when tensions rose, he had become paranoid that they would steal his new love away, so much so that he grabbed Cero and all the documents he could and locked her away in a bunker, suspended in stasis for 20 years.
Mereyl of course was enraged by his actions and in a fit of rage she killed him in his own home, alongside the twins who just happened to walk in on them. The only one left was Marcus, she would eventually bribe her way back, to become the CEO and raise Marcus. She raised him with an iron fist, and expected utmost perfection on anything he did. To summarize she was a terrible guardian, and as soon as he got the chance he escaped. He ended up living in the slums where Cero's bunker happened to be, and basically rescued her. In short, Marcus was a die hard communist who whished to rid Solaris of its opressive state,
Merryl was disappointed, but she didn't waster her time and money on looking for him, as she had found copies of the documents and schematics of Cero. In fact she was still incomplete, as some of her components were yet to be installed. With this, she proceeded to create Uno, unfortunately it came out as a baby so she ordered scientists to raise them in a facility for them only. This was an advantage for her since she could market them as anything. The ideal child, servant, or anything the customer desired.
Shortly after she experimented some more trying to make a masculine version of Uno and created Dos, a unit fit for combat and to replace law enforcement and army, the best thing of them was that they were cheap, reliable and of stong build.
Finally came Tres, she was the advanced Uno model, exactly the same as Uno but woth better components, more memory and improved performance.
The thing is that the company needed to keep the originals contained to create more copies, hence the name clones. They had developed a cloning machine that cut costs of manufacturing machinery.
The original Uno (y'know our beloved lesbian merchant) and the other two had beed equiped with a chip called the subservience implant, this ensures the absolute obedience of all clones. Uno's job was essentially to be a maid. Dos's job was to serve as a bodyguard and Tres she was supposed to be the house wife/trophy wife model.
To Merryl's misfortune, Uno would gave the guts to defy their fate and escape, eventually living in the vents for a while until managing to escape the compound. After that, Tres tried to follow along but got captured and then believed to be dead. So we end up with a very lonely Dos who was sent to train every single day, in excruciating conditions. After that he was sent along his other copy comrades to do Merryl's heinous bidding.

Protests, police and the use of force (NYT) Demonstrations continued across the United States on Sunday amid growing concern that aggressive law enforcement tactics intended to impose order were instead inflaming tensions. Videos showed police officers in recent nights using batons, tear gas, pepper spray and rubber bullets on protesters, bystanders and journalists, often without warning or seemingly unprovoked. The footage, which has been shared widely online, highlighted the very complaints over police behavior that have drawn protests in at least 75 cities across the United States. In Salt Lake City, officers in riot gear shoved a man with a cane to the ground. In Brooklyn, two police S.U.V.s plowed into a crowd of protesters. In Atlanta, police officers enforcing a curfew stopped two college students in a car, fired Tasers on them and dragged them out of the vehicle. And in Minneapolis, where there have been six consecutive nights of protests and clashes, a video appeared to show officers yelling at people on their porches to get inside and then firing paint canisters at them. “Light them up,” one officer said.
Deadly police raid fuels call to end ‘no knock’ warrants (AP) It’s the stuff of nightmares: Breonna Taylor and her boyfriend were in bed when a trio of armed men smashed through the front door. Gunfire erupted, killing the 26-year-old black woman. The three men turned out to be plainclothes police detectives, one of whom was wounded in the chaos and violence that March night. Taylor’s death led to protests and a review of how Louisville police use “no knock” search warrants, which allow officers to enter a home without announcing their presence, often in drug cases to prevent suspects from getting rid of a stash. Taylor’s name is one of those being chanted during nationwide protests decrying police killings of black people.
SpaceX capsule docks at ISS carrying US astronauts (WSJ) Elon Musk’s SpaceX on Sunday successfully docked a company-owned capsule carrying a pair of NASA astronauts with the International Space Station, capping a weekend of notable accomplishments that opened a new chapter in commercial space endeavors. Nineteen hours after a Falcon 9 rocket lifted off Saturday from Florida on a historic voyage featuring the first-ever private spacecraft to attain orbit with people on board, astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken made more history. They monitored the stately, automated rendezvous of their Crew Dragon capsule with the orbiting international laboratory 250 miles above earth, linking up at 10:16 a.m. ET to mark a new industry-government partnership aimed at revitalizing U.S. space ambitions.
Ambassadorships to the highest bidder (Foreign Policy) The United States is quite unique among major democracies in its custom of giving coveted ambassadorships to the highest bidder. Although it’s a bipartisan practice, the Trump administration has set a new record in the proportion of ambassadorial roles going to donors over career diplomats. Roughly 44 percent of Trump administration ambassadors have come from political appointments, versus the historical average of 30 percent, according to the American Foreign Service Association. Under U.S. law, career diplomats must outnumber political appointees in ambassadorial roles. That balance is under threat, with 57 percent of ambassador nominations this year going to political appointees.
The pandemic is making people reconsider city living, trading traffic for chickens (Washington Post) For 49 years, Jinky Demarest de Rivera has lived and thrived in dense, vibrant cities. The nonprofit finance director grew up in Manhattan and for the past 16 years has made a home in Oakland, where they live with their wife, Sara Demarest de Rivera, and dog, Onyx. Now the family is packing everything up for a large house in New York’s rural Hudson River Valley with enough room for chickens. Two months of sheltering in place in their rented two-bedroom apartment gave the pair some unexpected clarity about what was important to them. And new policies letting them work remotely indefinitely at their respective jobs gave them an opportunity to do something about it. They wanted to be closer to their aging parents on the East Coast, and saw no hope of ever owning in one of the most expensive real estate markets in the country. They aren’t the only ones making a big move. After months of forced stillness, unable to make many major decisions or follow through on some already planned, people are jumping into one of the biggest life changes there is and moving out of cities. For some, it’s a chance to be closer to family, which feels more urgent in the midst of a global health scare. For a large swath of people in the country’s most expensive cities, it’s a way to get more living space and be closer to nature, something increasingly made possible by the growing trend of remote work. And for many others it’s not really a decision at all, but a necessity in the face of growing job losses and still sky-high rents.
US declares a vaccine war on the world (Asia Times) “The United States and the UK were the only two holdouts in the World Health Assembly from the declaration that vaccines and medicines for Covid-19 should be available as public goods, and not under exclusive patent rights. The United States explicitly dissociated itself from the call for a patent pool, talking instead of ‘the critical role that intellectual property plays”—in other words, patents for vaccines and medicines.
Tropical storm kills 17 in El Salvador and Guatemala (AP) Rains from Tropical Storm Amanda left at least 17 dead and seven missing while causing extensive damage across El Salvador and Guatemala that pushed thousands of people into shelters amid the coronavirus pandemic. EL Salvador Interior Minister Mario Durán said Monday some 7,000 people were scattered across 154 shelters. He said a quarter of the rain that the country normally receives in a year fell in 70 hours. That set off landslides and flooding, especially in the western part of the country. Amanda pounded El Salvador with rain for days before moving ashore as a tropical storm on Sunday and pushing across Guatemala.
Nicaragua Becomes a Place of Midnight Burials (NYT) Just hours after Yamil Acevedo died in a hospital, funeral home workers in hazardous materials suits strapped his coffin to the back of a pickup truck, drove it to a cemetery and buried him in the dark of night. Across Nicaragua, families are being forced to hold these “express burials,” rushed funerals at all hours of the night, without time to call a priest or to buy flowers. The services are happening so fast, and in such a haphazard fashion, that relatives worry terrible mistakes are being made. “The doctor said, ‘If you can bury him as soon as possible, do it,’” said Amani Acevedo, Mr. Acevedo’s daughter. “I don’t know that the person in that coffin was even him.” The signs are everywhere that the coronavirus is raging across Nicaragua. But the Nicaraguan government insists it has the virus firmly under control, with the lowest Covid-19 death toll in Central America.
Grand Bazaar, cafes open and flights resume as Turkey eases up (Reuters) Flights and car travel resumed between Turkey’s big cities on Monday while cafes, restaurants and Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar reopened in the country’s biggest step to ease restrictions taken to contain the coronavirus pandemic. Traffic levels jumped in the commercial hub of Istanbul, with many Turks returning to work as the government sought to revive an economy hit hard by the pandemic. Employees of government offices and public facilities joined the many factory workers who restarted last month.
China and India Brawl at 14,000 Feet Along the Border (NYT) High in the Himalayas, an enormous fistfight erupted in early May between the soldiers of China and India. Brawls at 14,000 feet along their inhospitable and disputed frontier are not terribly unusual, but what happened next was. A few days later, Chinese troops confronted Indian soldiers again, this time at several other remote border points in the Himalayas, some more than 1,000 miles apart. Since then both armies have rushed in thousands of reinforcements. Indian analysts say that China has beefed up its forces with dump trucks, excavators, troop carriers, artillery and armored vehicles and that China is now occupying Indian territory. No shots have been fired, as the de facto border code dictates, but the soldiers have fought fiercely with rocks, wooden clubs and their hands in a handful of clashes. In one melee at the glacial lake Pangong Tso, several Indian troops were hurt badly enough that they had to be evacuated by helicopter, and Indian analysts said Chinese troops were injured as well. Nobody thinks China and India are about to go to war. But the escalating buildup has turned into their most serious confrontation since 2017 and may be a sign of more trouble to come as the world’s two most populous countries increasingly bump up against each other in one of the bleakest and most remote borderlands on earth.
In China, U.S. protests a hot topic on state, social media (Reuters) Chinese state media is giving extensive coverage to violent protests roiling cities across the United States, while the unrest has also featured widely in Chinese social media. CCTV featured reports from one of its reporters running with protesters in Minnesota, as well as short videos shot by Americans depicting police violence against protesters. On China’s social media platform Weibo, at least five news items on the protests were among the top 20 trending topics by midday, led by reports Trump had been temporarily taken to a bunker as protesters surrounded the White House. “The number one thing they want to show is that the Communist Party is doing a better job in terms of fighting the coronavirus and managing society,” said Alfred Wu, associate professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy at the National University of Singapore. “That’s the main message: the U.S. is not doing good.”
Gantz apologizes for the killing of Palestinian man (Foreign Policy) Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz has apologized after Israeli security forces shot and killed Iyad Halak, a Palestinian who was autistic, in Jerusalem’s Old City on Saturday. “We are really sorry about the incident in which Iyad Halak was shot to death and we share in the family’s grief,” Gantz said. Israeli police said they opened fire after they saw a suspect with a “suspicious object” who didn’t stop when ordered to. Police later confirmed that they found no weapon. Palestinian officials denounced the killing as a “war crime” and an “execution.” The killing led to demonstrations over the weekend in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, with some participants holding signs tying the killing to that of George Floyd in the United States.

7Inside the Government’s Top-Secret Doomsday Hideouts
Christopher Klein
As the Cold War heated up in the 1950s, the U.S. government devised top-secret plans to ensure its survival if the Soviet Union launched a nuclear attack. These “Continuity of Government” preparations included building dozens of underground bunkers and arranging to move high-ranking government officials out of harm’s way. From a White House at sea to a subterranean capitol at a posh resort, learn more about seven of these doomsday plans.
A view of the West Tunnel Blast Door, which weighs 25 tons and serves as an entrance to a former government relocation facility codenamed “Project Greek Island”. This 112,000 square-foot shelter was constructed beneath the Greenbrier Resort’s West Virginia Wing, to serve as a relocation site for members of the U.S. Congress and associated staff in the event of a nuclear attack on the U.S. soil.   (Credit: Alex Wong/Getty Images)
The Greenbrier—White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia For decades the most ambitious Cold War hideout for the U.S. government was hidden in plain sight at a mountain retreat 250 miles southwest of the capital city. When the Greenbrier resort undertook construction of a new conference center in 1958, the expansion project included a top-secret doomsday bunker for the U.S. Congress that included everything from a dentist’s office to a 400-seat cafeteria.
While much of this intended wartime capitol was hidden behind reinforced concrete walls, the resort’s public meeting spaces included some of the facilities that would have been used by lawmakers. “For decades, you had conventioneers and conference-goers filing through the public spaces, never realizing they were actually sitting in the doomsday chambers of the House and Senate,” said Garrett M. Graff, author of Raven Rock: The Story of the U.S. Government’s Secret Plan to Save Itself—While the Rest of Us Die.
Although the construction project stirred local curiosity—workers were particularly puzzled as to why so many urinals were required—the 90,000-square-foot complex remained a secret until The Washington Post revealed it in 1992. The bunker is now open for public tours.

Floating White House—Atlantic Ocean Beginning in 1962, two special Navy command ships—the light cruiser USS Northampton and light aircraft carrier USS Wright—were considered the best options for evacuating the president from Washington, D.C., in the event of a nuclear attack. Under the National Emergency Command Post Afloat (NECPA) plan, one of the two “Floating White Houses” was always at sea in the Atlantic Ocean, Chesapeake Bay or shadowing the president around the world.
The ships carried special Joint Chiefs personnel and featured elaborate staterooms with full communications capabilities. “The Soviet Union had such a weak navy that it was thought almost impossible to find the ships in the grand expanse of the Atlantic,” Graff said, “but once satellite technology made it easy to track ships and get aerial observations, it was quite clear it was no longer feasible to hide the president in the Atlantic Ocean.”
The NECPA plan was dropped in the early 1970s, and both ships were eventually sold for scrap.

Grove Park Inn—Asheville, North Carolina The Supreme Court’s doomsday digs would have been more luxurious than those of Congress and the White House. The nation’s highest court decided in 1955 that in the case of an apocalypse it would convene inside one of the three banquet halls of the palatial Grove Park Inn, which sported a golf course and—as an added perk—was in the process of building a new swimming pool.
One problem with the plan: Chief Justice Earl Warren said he would never leave Washington, D.C., after learning wives would not be allowed to evacuate with their husbands.
“There’s a funny intersection between government plans and normal human psychology,” Graff said. “The government still doesn’t plan for spouses and children, and the expectation is still today that people will leave their families behind and evacuate to whatever bunker they are supposed to go to.”

Randolph-Macon Woman’s College—Lynchburg, Virginia During World War II, the National Gallery of Art hid dozens of its most precious paintings and sculptures—including Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of George Washington—in a first-floor music room of the Biltmore Estate, not far from the Grove Park Inn in Asheville, North Carolina.
With the advent of the nuclear age, a pre-staged convoy of trucks in the gallery’s garage stood at the ready to evacuate its masterpieces to a $550,000 privately funded facility at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College (now Randolph College) that included a fully stocked, three-bedroom cottage for the gallery’s curator. The facility is now home to the Maier Museum of Art.

Cheyenne Mountain—Colorado Springs, Colorado Unlike most of the other doomsday bunkers constructed during the Cold War, no secrecy surrounded the underground fortress built for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD). A public groundbreaking was even staged in 1961 as burrowing work began at the 9,000-foot-tall granite Cheyenne Mountain.
Two tons of dynamite a day were needed to build the five-acre complex that contains reservoirs of water and fuel and chambers capable of housing three-story buildings. The facility became fully operational in early 1967, but has since been re-designated as an alternate command center.

Mount Pony—Culpeper, Virginia Built into a hillside 75 miles south of Washington, D.C., the doomsday bunker constructed for the chairman, board of directors and staff of the Federal Reserve System included an enormous vault that held more than $4 billion—enough to replenish currency east of the Mississippi River and maintain the money supply for the two years it would take for the Bureau of Printing and Engraving to resume operations.
Opened in 1969, the facility held 700 million pieces of currency, many of them the unpopular $2 bills reintroduced in 1976. “Rather than scrap them, the government packaged them all up and put them in the Mount Pony bunker. It would ensure that after nuclear war we would be largely using $2 bills, figuring people would be a lot less choosy about currency post-apocalypse,” Graff said. The underground bunker now houses an audio-visual archival facility for the Library of Congress.

Outpost Mission—Harrisburg, Pennsylvania Beginning in the 1950s, a helicopter search-and-rescue unit remained on standby outside the capital’s blast zone at Olmsted Air Force Base to save the president’s life. Wearing dark visors and lead-lined flight suits to protect against the effects of a nuclear blast, members of the special unit were trained to rescue the president from the rubble of the White House and relocate the commander-in-chief to a bunker or the Floating White House.
Although the unit disbanded in 1970 when advances in atomic weaponry practically eliminated the chances of surviving a nuclear blast, Graff says there is a modern analog to Outpost Mission still posted outside Washington, D.C. “It was put on alert in the hours after the 9/11 attacks to possibly dig Vice President Dick Cheney out of the rubble of the White House bunker,” he says.

Alex Final Wars 2: Dark Alex, Chapter 9 - Hunting From The Skies
Hey everyone! Before we get into this chapter I just want to say that I'm going back to college so updates might be less frequent. However, I do have a bunch of chapters pre-written so I can probably just post those. Anyway, let's get going with the story.
000000000000
The North Korean offensive had been turned around completely, and now it was a US offensive moving further and further north into the country. Heroes was providing cover for ground forces during a crucial push through a heavily defended area. The helicopters they were using could be completely operated by one person, but they were capable of holding 2, and the second person would serve as a gunner.
There were 3 helicopters, designated Hero 1, Hero 2, and Hero 3 for this mission.
Alex and Toothdee were in Hero 1, Jack and Skye were piloting Hero 2, and Laval and Eris were flying Hero 3.
A column of tanks surrounded by infantry moved up a road in the forest below, while the 3 helicopters flew overhead.
“Seeker drones have spotted enemy artillery emplacements and an ambush ready to spring,” Toothdee said, as red symbols appeared on the HUDs of the choppers.
“Roger, Hero 2, take the eastern artillery emplacement. Hero 3, you handle the ambush. Toothdee and I will take down the other artillery emplacement.”
The formation of choppers separated, and within a minute the sounds of explosions and gunfire filled the air as the helicopters attacked their targets.
Hero 3 used missiles to destroy 2 tanks, while mopping up infantry with its machine gun. Korean troopers tried shooting at the aircraft with their rifles, but its armor shrugged off the damage.
Hero 1 & 2 had targeted their artillery sites with rockets and fired, blowing up many of the cannons about to bombard the tank column. Machine gun fire also worked great and damaging boxes of shells, causing them to explode and cause more destruction.
“Great shooting Jack!” Skye said, her voice being heard throughout the open radio.
“Thank you, sweetie!”
Eris heard this and subsequently completed Laval, who thanked his mate accordingly.
Toothdee notified the column of tanks about the destroyed ambush, and the heavy armor pressed forward.
“Hostile vehicles spotted on a nearby roadway!”
“I see them,” Skye said, flying her helicopter over to the roadway, allowing Jack to engage the convoy.
“SHIT!” Hero 2 quickly moved away as explosions appeared all around it “enemy flak cannon.”
“It can’t hit all of us at once,” Alex said, as Hero 1 & 3 moved in, their superior firepower and numbers destroying the flak truck and its entourage.
“How bad is the damage to your helicopter?” Eris asked
“Just a scratch.” Skye said, “we can still fight.”
“Glad to hear,” Toothdee said, “drones have spotted a nest of flak guns, but it’s too heavily defended for us to engage.”
She directed the Tank column to make a detour and take out the flak site so the heroes could keep providing cover.
In the meantime, the wing of helicopters lit up a North Korean bunker nearby. They bombarded the concrete structures with volleys of missiles, no doubt collapsing underground parts of the structure, as was their intention.
“Skye, Jack, you guys make an excellent pilot and gunner.” Alex complimented.
“Thanks!” Skye said, “Jack can also fly, but he chose to be the helicopter gunner for this mission.”
“It’s nice to have more pilots on the team.”
“What’s our next target?”
“Well, our allies are taking out that flak site, so-“
“Hostile jets!” Toothdee said, prompting the helicopters to spin towards the approaching aircraft.
“How many?” Laval asked
“3, one for each of us.”
Toothdee fired her machine guns at a jet that was aiming directly at her, and the aircraft began to smoke as it circled the helicopter. Alex locked on with a missile and fired, the munition streaking behind the aircraft before hitting it, sending the plane crashing to the ground.
One of the other jets had been shot in the cockpit, causing it to crash, and in turn, making the 3rd jet withdraw.
“That was.... easy,” Laval said, clearly expecting a harder fight.
“The North Korean Air Force is in a sorry state” Toothdee explained, “a lot of their jets don’t even have enough fuel, and they’re using Soviet-era aircraft.”
“Hey Laval, you want to fly to Japan and get some sushi after this?” Eris asked, thinking about something they could do after this mission.
“Sure, let’s take your interceptor.”
“Hey, can you pick me up some sushi rice please?” Alex requested.
Toothdee listened into her radio for a few seconds before speaking. “Flak guns disabled, we can move on the main objective.”
All US forces in the area began to advance on a small town that would serve as a staging area for the next leg of the offensive. The town was heavily defended with multiple flak guns and cannons, as well as many North Korean troops. But the team would make sure that the town was in US hands soon enough.
Strafing the town, the team concentrated fire on flak cannons first, destroying many before the remaining cannons opened fire.
The 3 helicopters moved erratically and unpredictability, making them hard to hit, while they continued whittling down the anti-aircraft guns in the town as the ground forces made their assault.
Alex used missiles to destroy a military helicopter lifting off, and it crashed to the ground in a nearby field. Hero 1 then focused its fire on a statue of a prominent North Korean figure, sending the stone structure toppling over.
“Careful Alex!” Toothdee said, noting the large numbers of explosions he was creating throughout the town. “There could be civilians in those buildings!”
“I’m being careful.”
A group of North Korean troopers armed with rocket launchers raced to one of the town’s walls and fired heat-seeking missiles at Hero 3.
Eris let loose some flares to shake off the missiles, while Hero 1 destroyed the troopers with the rocket launchers. Hero 2 used its machine gun to mop up some infantry, while the other 2 helicopters fired volleys of missiles at a building that had been identified as the local garrison.
“That should be it,” Skye said, “the ground units can handle anyone left inside.”
The helicopters began to circle, waiting for the all clear so they could land. Unfortunately, the third North Korean jet had returned, dive bombing Hero 1 and damaging the helicopter’s rotor. Hero 1 began to spin out of control, and its occupants held on tight while the other 2 choppers shot down the North Korean jet.
Hero 1 crashed into the ground and rolled over before coming to a stop and catching on fire. Alex tried to activate the canopy’s emergency release, but the canopy wouldn’t fly off. Luckily it had been badly damaged in the crash, and Alex and Toothdee were able to shoot the glass out with their sidearms. The pair claimed out of the wreckage and moved away in case what was left of the helicopter exploded.
A group of North Korean soldiers fleeing the town engaged the downed pilots. Fortunately Hero 2 & Hero 3 took them down with machine guns and rockets.
“You 2 ok?” Laval said through the radio.
“We’re fine.” Alex said, checking himself for any cuts or wounds “we’ll make our way to the town, it should be clear any minute now.”
000
A few hours later, and the town was now being transformed into a staging area for a push further into the country. Helicopters and aircraft brought in supplies. While soldiers stood guard and unloaded the incoming crates. Other members of Heroes had arrived, in preparation for the next assault.
Standing on one of the town’s walls, Alex thought about the current state of the Korean campaign. US forces were pushing the country’s capital, but the North Korean high command had been moved deeper into the country. The pursuit of North Koreans leaders forced Heroes to spearhead the assault deeper and deeper into the country, killing soldiers and capturing towns along the way, as they had just done. Capturing the country’s capital would be a major victory, but the team would focus on finding the military leaders and crippling the North Korean War effort.
Tomorrow, they would make an assault on another target on their way to the base that was suspected to contain North Korean high command.
Looking up, Alex spotted the next target in the distance, a prison camp, situated on the side of a mountain.
000000000000
This helicopter focused chapter was a prime example of how I try & spice up chapters by adding something interesting & different that catches people's eyes.  So I hope everyone liked it and will enjoy what's coming next!
