TLG: Rebuilding Trust
During Kion's absence, Kiara had been taken to Savannah Summits by Simba as a teen, merely attending and just getting acquainted with the political environment, eager to voice opinions she was sure about at the time. Fast forward to today, on Simba's last Savannah Summit before retiring someday soon, Kiara attends her very first Savannah Summit in which she's allowed to have her very own say on serious matters. Kiara was determined to prove that she could bring a history-making contribution to the table by welcoming a new and unlikely representative to the roster...
Days before this major Savannah Summit, Kiara, with the escort of Kovu and Vitani's Guard, meets with Jasiri, whom she'd become great friends with during Kion's absence. Jasiri, despite recently being on good terms with Simba and his family last time she'd met with them, was uncertain of how the rest of the Pridelanders would react. As usual, Kiara's supportive and optimistic words eventually managed to persuade Jasiri into attending, as she too strived to break barriers.
The Savannah Summit arrives, Kiara makes a major announcement, introducing the newcomer who makes her way down the entrance to Mizimu Grove. The animals are in shock, audibly gasping and jolting at the sight of the hyena, but they keep to themselves. They've seen her fight alongside Kion and his former Guard before, proving her alignment, yet they were still wary.
While the Pridelands' herds' post-traumatic stress from the invasion and ruthless overhunting from Shenzi's Clan during Scar's Reign is valid, their transgenerational trauma alongside the long-running banishment of Shenzi's Clan has led to ignorant stigmatisms surrounding hyenas as a species over the years. Kiara, having prepared her speech, has Jasiri's back by clarifying to everyone that not all hyenas follow the customs of the clan that had once taken over the Pridelands, and that Jasiri's Clan (which features members that descend from Shenzi's Clan), intend to learn and grow from their predecessors' mistakes.
Simba, who had been getting better at overcoming his paranoia brought on by his PTSD, is pleased with Kiara, telling her that this was the best time and place to introduce a genuine, trusting hyena leader like Jasiri to the Pridelanders to end a long, needless prejudice. Hyenas were to no longer be banished from the Pridelands, and to Kiara, Jasiri, and (even on behalf of) Kion's wishes, all living beings who respected the Circle of Life were welcome to the Pridelands.
(...this does make me wonder, though, does anyone think Nala would feel the same about Jasiri? While Nala's rational enough to know Jasiri's nothing like the members of Shenzi's Clan (and she knows Shenzi's Clan all too well, spent a majority of her life growing up with them), do you think the presence of any hyena might spark a deep-rooted, subconscious trauma in her? I can see her trying so hard to be openminded to Jasiri just as she was to Kovu, but these memories of Scar's hyena army won't stop bugging her. Perhaps she starts to understand the feelings Simba once went through.)
(Note: To clarify, including Jasiri in the Savannah Summit is not to make the Outlands a mere part the Pridelands, as that would lower Jasiri's status as prime minister and take away from her drive to restore the Outlands as a separate yet equally opportune, prosperous land. Because Jasiri's the leader of a whole land, like that of Sokwe of the Theluji Mountains or Dhahabu of the Backlands. Jasiri would moreso attend some kind of "super summit" in the future, where it's all kingdom leaders instead of herd leaders)
(Another Note: This took way longer than I can believe, usually I get drawings done over a matter of like three days at the most if I'm busy, but this took probably two weeks. What's sad is that the idea was so clear and fresh in my head that I was ready to jot the whole thing down, but I found myself procrastinating, getting a few weeks of school out of the way, and even questioning the drawing's existence. In the end I think I'm glad I took my time, I allowed myself to introduce myself to several character designs that were new to me, and I carefully eyed every detail)
"What is it, little one?"
Bupu rolled over to face him. Her eyes were red, her nose swollen. Tears streaked down her dirty face. She snuffled and wiped her hand across her nose. "I don't want to leave you. I want to go with you," she said brokenly, "but–oh–I will miss my people!" Sobbing, she buried her face in her hands.
A look of infinite tenderness touched Raistlin's face, a look no one in his world would ever see. He reached out and stroked Bupu's coarse hair, knowing what it felt like to be weak and miserable, an object of ridicule and pity.
"Bupu," he said, "you have been a good and true friend to me. You saved my life and the lives of those I care about. Now you will do one last thing for me, little one. Go back. I must travel roads that will be dark and dangerous before the end of my long journey. I cannot ask you to go with me."
Bupu lifted her head, her eyes brightening. Then a shadow fell across her face. "But you will be unhappy without me."
"No," Raistlin said, smiling, "my happiness will lie in knowing you are safely back with your people."
"You sure?" Bupu asked anxiously.
"I am sure," Raistlin answered.
Dragons of Autumn Twilight, by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman
An "unlikely encounter" that became the most loved and moving relationship of all Dragonlance. For the @dragonlance-week, I share my portrait of Raistlin and Bupu, the moment when he's going to leave her.
“ A look of infinite tenderness touched Raistlin’s face, a look no one in this world would ever see. …”

¨ They gave us chocolate to drink, somewhat ceremonially, and suddenly I recalled the words of the early Spanish writer who had said that before the mushrooms were served, chocolate was drunk. I sensed what we were in for: at long last we were discovering that the ancient communion rite still survived and we were going to witness it. The mushrooms lay there in their box, regarded by everyone respectfully but without solemnity.¨ Gordon Wasson

From “The Annotated Legends,” Page 83:
“Raistlin begins Legends supremely self-confident. He represents chaos, seeking to overthrow order, represented by the Gods. To this end, he has plans and ambitions, and he knows exactly how he’s going to achieve them. He has no care for anyone. He is willing to use people, even resort to murder, to achieve his goals. All this might make Raistlin a very unlikable character but for the fact that he has a heart and a soul, neither of which he wants, for he believes love and sympathy for his fellow men to be weaknesses. In the end, love for his brother and empathy for the weak and downtrodden (represented by Bupu) are the stengths that will redeem Raistlin.” —Margaret Weis.
I'm re-reading Dragonlance from the beginning lately and enjoying it tremendously.
Thinking about how Bupu gave Raistlin Majere a spell book in "Dragons of Autumn Twilight" -- a gully dwarf, whom are completely ignored, up abused and/or destroyed by LITERALLY everyone else in Krynn -- was a VITAL LINK in the chain of everything Raistlin later did.
Bubupu Bupu is the cutest lalafell.

Dragons of Autumn Twilight - A review (that will mostly get me blocked by the fandom)
*stares into the distance* I am glad it exists.
How mean some people are with criticism, really.
I’ve been reading fantastic literature since I was a child, and for the record I started with The Lord of the Rings. That's why I have very little patience and empathy with those who throw garbage to the Dragonlance saga as something cheap and unworthy, comparing it to Tolkien's work. Well, I am a Tolkien fan as much as I am a Dragonlance fan. Whatever some may claim, they are not bad books. It's not a bad saga at all, even if it came out of a Dungeons & Dragons game. The world is well built, the characters are diverse and well defined, the story is entertaining and easy to follow, and if you stay loyal for at least 6 books - the main core, which is the Chronicles and Legends - you get to have a lot, much love for this story.
And now we are going into this adaptation to animation cinema. I saw it yesterday in fear and terror due to the bad reviews I had read. Truth is, it hasn’t been as bad as I expected.
Yes, compressing Dragons of Autumn Twilight - the first book of the Chronicles - in an hour and a half film is risky and the result is that the pace is overwhelming and many events and details have been removed, does this surprise anyone?
Yes, combining 2D and 3D animation is a terrible idea, it looks awful.
Yes, the animation of the characters - not the design itself - is quite awkward and limited.
Well, maybe Goldmoon shouldn’t look THAT white, after all. She’s canonically a WOC, even if her hair is golden and silver. She should look like Riverwind, at least for the skin tone.
BUT - the soundtrack is beautiful and enough immersive, the voice acting is more than correct - I actually enjoyed Kiefer Sutherland as Raistlin -; the characters are well defined; the movie is fast-paced and entertaining, even too brief. In fact, I kinda regret that at least the second and third parts of the trilogy were never adapted, because we were left in a cliffhanger at the end. Unfortunately, with the reception it had, it was expected they tried no more.
The main problem has been a lack of budget. This story needs a serious and deep investment; I would say a generous series in the style of Game of Thrones on HBO or The Witcher on Netflix ... because one film, or several, are not enough to adapt well the complexity of the world of Krynn and this story.
As long as this doesn’t happen, I am glad that this film exists. I would take it as a modest work of animation for fans and to introduce children to the world of Dragonlance. Why not? I wish these beloved books were better known and loved, because they are totally worth it. Meanwhile, this movie would serve as an introduction. Of course, everyone must read the books.
In short, I give it a 6 out of 10. It’s decent enough, it’s entertaining, it shows some care. And in the name of Raistlin, my favorite character, who’s mostly well portrayed - when I was expecting a catastrophe - I absolve this cringy little treasure of all its sins.
Did I say you should read the books? You cannot imagine how far they will take you.
Average reaction of the fandom to this movie.
Moments that make it worthwhile:
- Raistlin. His voice, his crooked smile, that horrible cough - I spit my coffee the first time I heard it I swear to God - and it’s hilarious he doesn't bother to cover his mouth.
- A goblin spits out a very thick... spittle... on Tanis' forehead.
- Caramon staring at Tika's breasts and butt, swaying them around the inn.
- Flint, sounding suspiciously like Gimli from The Lord of the Rings, dressed as a woman, with huge fake boobs, saying, "I want to make one thing clear. This never happened."
- Tasslehoff yelling: "Where are the gods when we need them!" and Fizban replying, "Here, let me." Only fans will understand why this is so funny.
- Caramon lifting Tasslehoff up to his face level. I didn't know I needed this.
- Raistlin and Sturm being mean to each other. This cannot be more canon.
- Laurana kissing Elistan on the mouth and dancing with him. WTF?! ??!?!
- Raistlin casts a friendship spell on Bupu. Bupu hugs his waist. Caramon comments, "It looks like you overdid a little."
- Tanis sighing: "I wish Kitiara has survived all of this, wherever she is". Change to the scene with Kitiara turned into a dragon highlord, completely invested in the Evil’s plan and smirking wickedly.
- A draconian licks longly and slowly Laurana's face.
- Raistlin throwing hints about the promiscuity of his stepsister and about Laurana flirting with Elistan for the sole purpose of tormenting Tanis.
- Did I already say that Raistlin is great?
- The human form Khisanth chooses to speak to Lord Verminaard is that of a practically naked succubus.
- Also, although this is what Dragonlance fans are used to, the same happens to Takhisis.
- AND Raistlin.

9 favourite characters from 9 different things
Interesting. @tofuthebold tagged me to name 9 favorite characters from 9 different things so uh I guess this is where I out myself as a huge nerd.
1. Raistlin Majerie - Dragonlance (homeboy is in like 18 novels or something)
Troubled, broken, the sickly twin who is always shoved aside in favor of his handsome brother (or his even more handsome half sister). Raist goes to some really godawful dark places, but shockingly he still has a heart in that broke ass body...somewhere (just ask Bupu).
2. Spike Spiegel - Cowboy Bebop
C’mon. Spike is an intergalactic bounty hunter with a broken heart and a past that’s itching to catch up with him. And maybe one scruple (2 at best). He lives one day to the next not knowing where his next beef and broccoli (and we’re all outa beef) is coming from. 10/10 my kinda guy.
3. Jesse Pinkman - Breaking Bad
It’s about the growth. It’s about Jesse developing or clinging to a strong sense of right and wrong while being involved in the biggest drug operation in at least a big part of 2 countries. The depressive spiral and the way he deals with trauma are both really relatable to me. I’m glad he’s getting more screen time next month in El Camino. Can’t wait.
4. Tyrion Lannister - Game of Thrones
Until the end (let’s not get into that) he was my favorite. Also the way he gets zero credit for his part in the entire story, even though it would be impossible without him, sounds familiar. More a lover than a fighter. A pragmatist too easily trusting of others. 100% your truest ally if you keep your word to him. We are the same. Also Peter Dinklage made me fall a little bit in love with Tyrion. Rude.
5. Inara Serra - Firefly
Inara! A strong, self-made woman, respected companion. Literally the only reason Serenity gets anywhere in the galaxy without being pulled over. She is confident and self-assured, not to mention she has no need of idealizing men. I want to be her and I want to date her. I want to verbally roundhouse kick some asshat bothering her just to impress her. I think she’s neat 🙃
6. Robin Hood - Disney’s 1973 Robin Hood
Legit my first crush. Disney I blame you for furries. He’s a perfect gentleman, plus Brian Bedford’s voice acting...just. Please don’t judge me. Every other Disney prince paled in comparison to Robin, and no man I’ve ever met has lived up to his romantic, humorous, daring, and brave spirit (SHUT UP. I know he’s fictional, I know he’s a fox...but the bar is literally so low. Isn’t it?)
7. Steve the Porcupine - Wonder Park
“Others might describe Steve as a little uptight, a little bit of a killjoy. What Steve would describe himself as is the heart and soul of everything working, anywhere. So yeah, he’s...look, he’s not loosey goosey, he’s not Captain Funtime (if that’s a title that anyone truly deserves), what Steve is, is a rock. He provides stability, foundation for fun. And what’s more fun at the end of the day than a solid foundation? That’s what Steve would argue.”
I’ve seen too many children’s movies...but John Oliver playing a porcupine that is just essentially what John Oliver would sound like/act like in The Hangover, well that was pretty great tbh. Here’s his interview about the movie.
8. April Ludgate - Parks and Rec
April is the perfect embodiment of crunchy exterior, warm gooey center. Although there is a lot of crunchy exterior....but we all get that. I have a bit of April Ludgate with me at all times and I adore her. Aubrey Plaza is a gem not to be overlooked, either. Love her.
9. Grantaire - Les Miserables (hon mention Gavroche, poor tragic thing <3 )
Shall I flee the execution or run straight to the (not so) secret loml and hold his hand while we die together? Hm. Vive la République it is. I don’t think that will never not fuck me up thanks.
@lace-maze @honeybeelullaby @valentinaonthemoon @influentshadow @ifihadadragon42 @idinink who are your 9 faves from 9 different things???
So I just got to Bupu in my Autumn Twilight reread and my heart MELTED INTO A PUDDLE when she called Raistlin pretty, because she's absolutely 100% correct.
We stan a gully dwarf who, even while charmed, managed to charm all of us.
