The Savannah Summit:

First things first, major kudos to Makuu for actually being responsible and caring about what’s best for his float

You really can’t blame Kion and everyone else to be super skeptical about Makuu. I know he changed for the better, but he’s done…a lot since he beat Pua

“but to invite him to the Savannah Summit? With all these other peaceful animals?”—I hate to break it to you, Kion, but just bc an animal is an herbivore doesn’t mean they’re peaceful and friendly. If anything, it means survivor

“Makuu has more enemies than friends!”—So does Bunga lmao

The song is great. I love how everyone seems annoyed at first but near the end, it’s all 🎶Kumbaya, my lord! 🎶. Except Makuu…dude looks like he’s lowkey regretting his life choices he did NOT ask for a bs song

I’m totally on Makuu’s side. He was genuinely trying to be civil here, especially when it comes to Bupu

If Zazu had a nickel for every time a rhino used him as a chair, he’d have two nickels, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice (great nod to the OG movie)

I remember Athena P criticizing Simba for blaming Kion about ruining the Summit after Makuu understandably leaves and I agree. Wtf Simba he’s 10. Go easy on him, come on 😭

The part that irks me the most is that when Mufasa asks “What has Makuu done to make you think this way?”, Kion says “Nothing, really”. BRO WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘NOTHING REALLY’?! I understand Mufasa meant what Makuu has done today but there are a LOT of things Makuu’s done in the past that Kion should have told his grandpa. In fact, here’s a whole list:

-Taking over Big Springs when he became leader, resulting in all the animals to scatter

-Challenging kids to fight

-Taking over the flood plains

-Trying to eat Basi which would have been just him being a crocodile if not for the fact that the reason is so he wouldn’t have to follow any rules (says so on the wiki)

-TAKING NALA HOSTAGE (seriously did Simba even KNOW about that? Did Nala or Kion bother to tell him?)

-Generally being a dick to animals

Makuu I know you did nothing wrong in this episode, but you can’t blame Kion for acting this way

I’m not placing any blame on Mtoto. He’s a good boy and all he did was tell the guard what he heard and that’s it

Twiga and Vuruga Vuruga coming up with the trap doesn’t surprise me. Cape buffalo are actually really vengeful irl so it makes sense how she wanted to teach Makuu a lesson. They ain’t called “Black Death” or “Widow Maker” for nothing

It’s cool how Makuu took the prank well. Respect.

Wonder how Makuu felt about animals fighting over him lmao?

Crocs really DO need a lot of water, otherwise their lives are on the line. Makuu was really more concerned than upset

“KIBURI! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!”—Fighting a child, what’s it look like

Side hc: I like to think something similar happened with Pua, Piga, and Kujivunia. Pua saw Piga antagonizing some poor young animal and he was all “Piga! What in the Pridelands do you think you’re doing?” and Kujivunia (who happened to be there), with her typical sarcasm was like “Performing a dance number, Pua 🙄”

Kiburi saying “we crocs deserve better!” brings me back to my hc that Kiburi had good intentions (again, until further in the episode), he just went about it the wrong way. He’s almost like an activist in a way. He’s not trying to be selfish, he just wanted a better watering hole. Now going as far as to rule the Pridelands…..yeah too far

The background crocodiles who were like 😦 when Kiburi called for the mashindano are so me. I’m the one going “Ooooooh shit!”

In Disney romance is dead.

My advice for anyone who loves a good romance - you won't find it in Disney.

They are known for making some of the most romantic animated films of all time - Beauty and The Beast (90s version) is a classic example.

But recently Disney have been pouring cold water on romance in their movies.

And, believe it or not, the rot began waaay back in 2010 with of all things Alice in Wonderland.

It was a delightful film. Most of all I loved the chemistry between Mian Wasikowska's 'old soul' Alice and Johnny Depp's charming but tormented Tarrant Hightopp (aka Hatter).

I was saddened when at the end she returned to 'real life' and to a life without romance, but heartened when they announced a sequel...only for Alice to once again leave Wonderland, this time for a reason I found appalling - to look after her mother, an unpleasant woman who showed little affection for Alice - and she also had another daughter she was much closer to.

Any reason to keep Alice and the Hatter apart for ever.

And please - don't start with the 'Johnny is too old for Mia' crap, because this isn't about Johnny and Mia, but Alice and the Hatter, and Alice was the more mature one!

But, since AiW I have noticed bit by bit romance in Disney productions is dying.

Mulan - the live action version removed the romantic lead.

Star Wars - Han and Leia's relationship had come to an end. Finn/Rose is quashed in TROS.

And of course, 'Goddess of Jedi Dogma Rey'......doesn't need a boyfriend. Doesn't need anyone and anybody, apparently.

Now it has happened with Loki.

Loki, Thor's tormented God of Mischief, will spend eternity trapped in a tree with no one to love him. Because these days it seems that there is no redemption but death.

Waaaay back in my 20s I was an avid reader of the Dragonlance books. My favourite character was Raistlin Majere. Physically frail but incredibly strong willed and powerful, I pitied and despised him in equal measures when I first started reading the books, but my opinion changed dramatically when he did one thing.

As the heroes were escaping danger Raistlin suddenly went back, to his friends' chagrin, and returned with - Bupu, the little gully dwarf who had been their guide. And who the big, strong men - had completely forgot about. And the only one willing to risk his life to save her was Raistlin.

I started to love his character then.

Probably one of the most tragic figures in fantasy I desperately wanted Raistlin redeemed. Don't get me wrong - he did some terrible things. But, it all came from a place of pain. And I wanted him to get a 'happy ending'. Because this is fantasy folks - and if you can't find happy endings in make believe, where can you find them?

But ultimately....he didn't. I was devastated.

But, there was always Star Wars.

Not anymore.

The Skywalkers are all dead, along with Han Solo. And apparently Adam Driver confirmed in a recent interview Ben aka Kylo...was never meant to be redeemed. That he was meant to die evil.

And also...Harrison Ford actually didn't want Han to die in TFA. Despite years ago wanting to kill his character off, Ford over the years mellowed a lot to him.

Abrams wanted him to die at his son's hands so we, the audience, would hate Kylo. That we would cheer his death. That we would embrace Rey as his replacement.

But they made a drastic mistake.

Because Rey - is a bore.

She may tick the boxes but she is frankly utterly unmemorable as a hero. She's an archetype.

The most memorable character was Kylo. And the 'reylo' romance was the highlight of the ST. No matter how much Finn fans moan. No matter how much the 'woke' criticised it. Because Rey was at her most interesting when interacting with Kylo.

And it wasn't just we fans of it who noticed it - Rian Johnson did.

And the critics did.

But, Disney refused to listen and gave us TROS. Now they intend to continue with their soulless heroine in a new film, or series of films, whilst removing the prince from their forthcoming LA Snow White.

Why?

To satisfy #metoo, who apparently were the 'consultants' on the LA Little Mermaid? Which underperformed at the BO?

Frankly, to quote Rhett Butler ....I myself don't give a damn.

Bad enough that Raistlin had a sad ending. Bad enough Loki did. But Star Wars, the film series that had at its heart a message of hope - sorry Disney, SW was the last straw. I loved it for forty plus years. I was 12 when I first saw it. I was 54 when I watched it die with TROS.

Disney turned Lucas's saga into a horror story. And it was meant to be a fairytale.

Fairytales have happy endings. Real life is often heartbreaking and disappointing. Fairy Tales are our escape.

Disney, once the master of fairtales....have completely crushed them.

No romance. No love. No forgiveness.

No redemption but death.

If all someone can expect is that....why bother 'turning good'? Why bother at all?

___ The sudden changes and forceful control of the Pridelands' herds had rendered Vitani's Guard utterly stumped on how to handle the coup. They were outnumbered and knew the consequences of facing large, hoofed, horned animals, and Vitani felt she couldn't just use the Roar of the Elders to blast them away, seeing as Ngurumo put the Guard's (let alone any predator's) reputation in a tight spot, why hurt them? The herbivores had quickly overcrowded every surface covered in green; the trees were stripped naked, and the fields had many bare patches of dirt now. The prey animals had even fought each other for food and space, reflecting how much they'd been misplaced throughout the Pridelands, and wrongfully mixed with each other. It had been like the elephants' migration from Kilio Valley after it burned down not too long ago, but exponentially worse in multitude across various animals this time. Now that the Pridelands' leaders had returned from the Tree of Life, they were met with numerous disasters of their own. Ma Tembo had disagreements with Zito. Vuruga Vuruga and Twiga shared indecision in their trust in Vitani's Guard. Bupu and Thurston quickly fell into the beliefs their herds blindly followed. Basi tried to wrangle violently protective hippos in his pod. Poor Laini tried not to get trampled by the displaced megafauna while looking for her scattered group. Big Baboon's troop was unaffected and indifferent. Makuu's Float was unharmed, but certainly unwelcome, back to square one for Makuu.  Lastly, Mbeya was faced with a rather polarized crash, where members either desperately wanted him back, or thought that a new leader like Ngurumo was in order. The mess amongst individual herds did not amount to the astonishment that radiated from the King and Queen, especially Simba. While he was used to handling constant stress in his life, it wouldn't be without utter dismay and reluctance every time. The kingdom hadn't been this unstable since his great grandfather's time as king. He wasn't to immediately pin any blame solely on Vitani, nor the rest of the Guard, but he still could not believe what the Guard didn't do. Vitani visibly gulped, her mouth running dry from fear that had suddenly overcame her as her eyes met the King's.

the overall problem of raistlin is this is a man who is semi-canonically clinically depressed (i am diagnosing him based on his canonical traits and internal narrative, including the part i just read where he thinks "hold on, I'm happy. have i ever been happy before?") and rather than give him any help whatsoever he's told he needs to learn compassion* and IS CURSED WITH VISION THAT CAUSES HIM TO SEE THE WHOLE WORLD WHITHER AND DIE.

what winter night suggests, honestly, is that Raistlin would have been so fucking happy as a travelling magician doing shows for people, all dressed up in red sequins. and all I can think of is, if he'd stayed in solace, if he'd not spent his teens doing mercenary work and his twenties saving the world, maybe he could have been happy. maybe he'd have had some sense of self-worth.

honestly kind of funny that i had a therapist who, when i vented to her about how upset i was my parents didn't give a shit about me doing well on. i think it was a paper for school? she told me (based on this AND ALSO PREVIOUS SESSIONS) that i needed to stop looking to them for acknowledgement and validation. like... she wasn't wrong but the way she said that and didn't even give me, idk, any kind of way to grieve the lack of attention/support/validation from my dad and stepmom is so crazy. i did good on a paper! i want dad and stepmom to see and be happy! i want them to care what i do!

and it's made repairing the relationship with them so weird too. maybe in a positive way? i'm so surprised when i talk about interests and achievements and they respond positively. dad and i talked about competitive gaming some because i mentioned getting into competitive pokemon and like. idk. i always mention stuff like that to them in a joke way so that when they laugh it's on my terms. but he let me talk about stuff.

actually i think. idk. he doesn't know pokemon but i was able to talk more about competitive play in his fave game, which he doesn't even play in competitively, than he was able to even try to say stuff about mine. he could have asked about what i meant by hazard setting or whatever. i am always chasing things. i'm better at things than others but the people i want to see it don't always see. sometimes they just don't understand but i understsnd stuff my dad likes, he should try to understand stuff i like

So one of our mice, Bupu, has a short tail.

It wasn’t cut off or anything. She’s a partial Manx, so the tail was just made like that. Just like Manx cats, Manx mice have a short or nonexistent tail. It’s not especially healthy but not harmful.

In any case, we keep telling her she only has half a butt and ask her where the rest of her butt went. She doesn’t know. The rest of her butt is all gone.
