The grapevine has tripled in size. I’m thinking it is a Frost grape rather than a Muscadine but we’ll see:

When I redesigned the bird netting over the swamp milkweed, I incorporated a way to open it up to let in the larger pollinators when no Monarch caterpillars were present:

Our monarda had flopped over due to heavy rain so I shore it up. It looks a little industrial now but in a few days the monarda will have all the practicality covered in green:

Moth of the Week
Hummingbird Clearwing Moth
Hemaris thysbe
Tumblr media
The hummingbird clearwing moth is a part of the family Sphingidae or the hawkmoth family and was first described by Johan Christian Fabricius in 1775. The name Hemaris Thysbe is thought to be a reference to Thisbe, one of the doomed lovers in Ovid's Metamorphoses, due to the color of Thisbe’s blood-stained scarf and the maroon color of the moth. Additionally, the name hummingbird clearwing is due to the humming noise created by the rapid flapping of the moth’s transparent wings.
Description The hummingbird clearwing moth typically has an olive green and maroon back with a white or yellow and maroon underside. It has pale legs and no stripes, which is how you tell this moth apart from other in its genus, Hemaris. Its wings are transparent with a maroon border. After hatching, the hummingbird clearwing’s wings are a fully opaque dark red to black. Then the wing’s scales fall off when the moth takes flight, resulting in a clear wing with maroon borders and visible veins. However, a moth’s color and wing patterning varies between individual moths. For example, moths born in the south or later in the mating season are darker in color, and different populations have varying wing border shapes.
Average wingspan of 4.75 cm (≈1.9 in)
Up to 70 wingbeats per second
Can fly up to 12 mph (≈19.3 kph)
Diet and Habitat When in their caterpillar stage, these moths eat the leaves of cherry trees, European cranberry bushes, hawthorns, dogbane, honeysuckle, and snowberry bushes. Adult hummingbird moths feed on the nectar from flowers such as the Wild Bergamot and beebalm, red clovers, lilacs, phloxs, snowberry, cranberry, blueberry, vetch and thistle. The hummingbird clearwing prefers purple and pink flowers. They use their long proboscis or feeding tube to collect nectar from the flowers while flying in front of it like a hummingbird.
The average proboscis is 20 mm (≈0.8 in)
These moths are the most common in southern Ontario and the eastern United States. Their habitat ranges from Alaska to Oregon in the west and from Newfoundland to Florida in the east. They migrate northward from April to August and southward in late spring and the fall. They inhabit forests, meadows, and suburban gardens.
Mating The hummingbird clearwing has two broods a year in the south, but only one in the north. Mating takes place in May and June as females attract males with pheromones produce from glands at the tip of the abdomen. Female hummingbird moths will lay 200 eggs that will hatch in only 6 to 8 days.
Predators Hummingbird moths and caterpillars in general are hunted by birds, mantids, spiders, bats. To help protect themselves, these types of moths resemble hummingbirds or bees to fool predators.
Fun Fact Adults hummingbird clearwing moths are most active during the hottest parts of the day and have no hearing abilities due to a lack of “hearing organs.”

New in bloom for you today! Aroyyo lupine (? I know it’s some kind of lupine species but this is my best guess), blue dicks, pacific pea, some kind of vetch? And bush poppy!

01/08/23-Lakeside and home: Birds, flowers and views
Photos taken in this set are of: 1. A Cormorant on Concorde lake which was thrilling to see and very much in keeping with the seeing unusual things at Lakeside so far this week like the wasp spider mentioned in my previous post about it and insects seen today, I occasionally see Cormorants here more so in the autumn/winter months so it was interesting to see one today. It was nice to get good views of it swimming among the Great Crested Grebe chicks, although very much an inland bird too it was evocative of the coast seeing this dashing bird. 2. Plant across the road out the front, possibly lamb quarters. 3. Chamomile out the front which looked pretty. 4. One of a few teasels which looked splendid and full of colour. 5 and 10. Views at Lakeside. 6. Mallards. 7 and 8. A juvenile gull it was great to see on beach lake I believe a Lesser Black-backed Gull as it was calling to the adult of this species circling above, the latter the one I enjoyed flying last night here. 9. Roses on the bush out the front.
Moorhen, Greylag Geese seen well, an intimate and cheerful view of a Song Thrush, Starlings heard and seen well and House Sparrow were other key birds seen at Lakeside today, with Jackdaw, Goldfinch and Collared Dove including moody views of them enjoyed at home. Purple loosestrife, water mint, wild carrot, dock, bird vetch, agrimony and sow thistle including swathes of it looking nice in the landscape, red bartsia, broad-leaved clover and bird's-foot trefoil were other flower highlights at Lakeside with fresh red deadnettle also enjoyed out the front on my walk.

starting on making a wreath for mental health. i plan on building upon it throughout the year with various materials scavenged in my yard. this hoop was taken from a willow that had been downed from a snow plow. willow is a pretty dense wood, so the thicker bits were very snappy and not very pliable. i couldve boiled the sticks but this was more of a passive activity and i dont have much dispensable water
as the season gets warmer there will be tons of shrubs, vetch and weeds growing to pick, dry and weave into this thing. maybe ill make mini ones, not too sure right now. i gotta invest in a proper hatchet and bush shears because as much as i love thwacking with hard sticks, green twigs dont really snap off well, wehe

It’s time for the last ever official Path Report! I’m moving this weekend but I wanted to make time for one final look-around to see what is growing down the little path that runs behind my house.
Starting off strong with one of my favourite flowers to spot, Pink Wintergreen:
Tumblr media
There was a whole bunch of Bedstraw everywhere as well:
Tumblr media
And the wild roses are mostly done blooming; a bunch of them had rust fungus.
Tumblr media
The Nodding Onions are starting to put up some buds:
Tumblr media
Alongside the aspen, Saskatoon bushes and wild roses, there are an absolute metric shit-ton of beaked hazelnuts along the path as well:
Tumblr media
There were also many of the usual suspects of path-adjacent flowers, like feral Canola:
Tumblr media
Vetch:
Tumblr media
Cow Parsnip:
Tumblr media
Black Medick:
Tumblr media
And a personal favourite, Pineapple Weed:

The Memorial Garden - Excerpt 5 - Flying Sparks - A Novel – Life
Original Post: http://www.authorbettyadams.com/bettys-blog/the-memorial-garden-excerpt-flying-sparks-a-novel-life
Drake McCarty’s leg was shattered deep in the wilderness, and as the flash flood closed over him, he looked death in the face.
When he wakes up in a hospital bed, in a military base that shouldn’t exist, he has a whole leg and a furious sister to deal with.
Drake is sworn to keep a secret he doesn’t understand, but whatever pulled him out of the flood, isn’t quite done with him yet, because even if you leave nothing but footprints, the things that walk the forest can still follow you home.
Excerpt 5
Sometime in the past some unknown force had carved a shallow trench across the side of one of the small mountains that that dotted the wilderness. It had puzzled Drake at first. The scour was nearly parallel to the ridgeline, entirely the wrong angle to be an old rock slide, and terminated in a near perfectly circular clearing at the lower end. Centuries old Douglas-firs around the space abruptly gave way to a second ring only a few decades old. Those were in turn beginning to produce cones and a smattering of knee high saplings closer to the center. The rest of the space was completely given over to wildflowers. No matter what season Drake visited it he found a riot of life.
There had been an early spring and many herbs that normally would have waited a month or more were already in full bloom in the mountain meadow. A white wave of foamflower washed in from the deep forest surrounding the clearing, sending up knee high stalks covered in the delicate white blooms. Late trillium hid close to the roots of the great firs, many having shed their white corollas and begun to put forth their bulbous seed heads. Fuzzy white baneberry blossoms nodded gently in the breeze. A riot of yellow and purple spread across the ground as vetch and buttercups and a host of clovers competed for space in the open sun. Great stalks of lupine as high as his head thrust up their purple and blue proudly from thick clusters of palm shaped leaves. Pink shooting stars and violet harebells crouched under the protection of the larger plants. Indian paintbrush lit the scene with flames of red and orange. Where a spring seeped into the meadow elephant’s head flared neon pink and corydalis bushes put forth blushing blooms. Pale green wild orchids stood along the wet spots and the swarms of bees danced from them to the glacier lilies.

Bush vetch sketch | Limited edition fine art print from an original drawing. My sketches start life as hand-drawn graphite images made on cartridge paper. I often work on these with charcoal, oil pastel or Caran d’Ache to create the look I’m after. The artwork is then scanned and finessed digitally ready for fine art printing.
