Do people know most paper receipts are harmful to their health?
I'm going to get up on my soapbox for a minute, but do people realize how pretty much everyone is being overloaded with endocrine disruptors like BPA/BPS on a near-daily basis??
I don't think many people understand that ever since most of the world transitioned to thermal paper receipts (cheaper than ink), almost every receipt you handle from the gas station to the grocery store to the Square terminal printer at the local co-op is coated with Bisphenol-A (BPA) or its chemical cousin Bisphenol-S (BPS).
These chemicals have not only been proven to cause reproductive harm to human and animals, they've also been linked to obesity and attention disorders.
Not sure if your receipt is a thermal receipt? If you scratch it with a coin and it turns dark, it's thermal.
BPA/BPS can enter the skin to a depth such that it is no longer removable by washing hands. When taking hold of a receipt consisting of thermal printing paper for five seconds, roughly 1 μg BPA is transferred to the forefinger and the middle finger. If the skin is dry or greasy, it is about ten times more.
Think of how many receipts you handle every day. It's even worse for cashiers and tellers, who may handle hundreds in a single shift. It is also a class issue, since many people who work retail and food service are lower-income and will suffer worse health consequences over time from the near-constant exposure.
Not only that, receipts printed with thermal ink are NOT recyclable, as they pollute the rest of the paper products with the chemicals.
People don't know this and recycle them anyway, so when you buy that "green" toilet paper that says "100% recycled"? Yup, you are probably wiping your most sensitive areas with those same chemicals (for this reason, I buy bamboo or sugarcane toilet paper as a sustainable alternative to recycled paper).
This page from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency has some good links if you want to learn more.
As consumers, we need to demand better from our businesses and from our governments. We need regulation of these chemicals yesterday.
If you are a buyer or decision-maker for a business, the link above also contains a shortlist of receipt paper manufacturers that are phenol-free.
If you work at a register, ask customers if they want a receipt. If they don't and you can end the transaction without printing one, don't print one!
As a consumer, fold receipts with the ink on the inside, since that's where the coating is. Some more good tips here.
And whatever you do, DO NOT RECYCLE THERMAL RECEIPTS

Watcher fans sure are entitled and a little insane, ngl. "No one is going to sign up for your service! We're all poor! You've made the worst decision, and you'll be back in no time!" Saying this directly to the creators really reminds you of how low the respect for people you don't personally know has gone. I miss the forth wall between creator and audience.
I get and fully understand not having the money to support them, but... Watcher does have fans with money. A lot of them actually. They have merch sales. Their live tour sells out most venues. They have thousands of supporters on Patreon, where the cheapest tier is $5. They're able to gauge the rough finances of their staunchest supporters; that's how they landed on the subscription price. Yes, this move will reduce their viewership in sheer numbers, but to say all of their fans are broke and none will follow/support is factually incorrect.
It may not be a decision everyone agrees with, but severing the limitations of advertisers and youtube in favor of artistic freedom is a good thing. Yes, even if it comes with a loss of revenue. They understand that risk.
Also, I'm begging people to stop treating this like "another Netflix" or something and instead look at it as, "I am supporting a creator I like, similar to Patreon." They literally said in the video that they don't care if you share accounts. Get five friends, and you'll pay $1/mo.
I hate feeling compelled to rant in favor of their decision because I have my own reservations about whether it's the best move. However, I know it's not a choice they made lightly, and I like to think they understand that they'll need to branch out like crazy to entice subscribers.

Right sorry but I don't understand why some people, even people that seem otherwise reasonable, seem to have absolutely internalised corporate capitalism talk to the extent that it completely subsumes their own personality and (class) interests???
At work today we had what's supposed to be an evaluation where as a department we, about 40 people, talked about things that have been difficult this year and what we'd hope will improve next year.
So I talked about how this year I have worked a lot of cover, including for managers (2 pay bands above me) and for multiple colleagues at once who have been off, essentially doubling and at some times even tripling my workload - for extra stress and no extra money. I said (using corporate language to hint) that I wasn't always good at asking for help, meaning, undertone, none of you offered to help me out and just expected me to sit and take it because I need my existing salary.
So this was in small groups, in which the focus was firstly giving feedback, and secondly remembering to praise each other for our achievements.
Well the nominated speaker for our group comes on and immediately my story of struggling to do a large amount of extra tasks that are essentially literally taking advantage of someone in a position of little power, actively causing stress to myself at work, for no extra money or any kind of reward but 'helping out the team' is told to the group as "sometimes we had to take on extra responsibilities but that was good because it let us learn about our inner strength and learn more about the business, increasing our skills for the future".
Excuse me! That was not AT ALL what I was talking about!
I already work a valuable job in healthcare. I ALREADY have skills - HENCE I was able to cover for senior team members and keep everything running and going literally at the cost of my social life, mental and physical health. And you aren't even going to say thanks or well done?! In the meeting where that is meant to be the focus?? In fact you're actually going to remove my agency and reframe the story of my own struggle and sacrifice to help out that I told you into some kind of heartwarming Disney ending where the servant felt that the work was its own reward?!
No sorry, get to fuck with that.
Ironically as a result of the teambuilding, feedback, evaluation and celebrating success meeting, I've come out feeling absolutely disheartened. They were like robots. I wasn't the only one that's made sacrifices like this this year, but I was the only one who didn't try and reframe it into a positive, with a neat learning experience and lesson for the group at the end of it.
This is the same workplace that asked us what we would like to add to the workplace to improve our own wellbeing (I reiterate, working in a stressful healthcare provider) and then shot down everything we suggested, even those things that wouldn't involve paying us more or giving us more time off. We were told that we could work longer hours in order to be able to 'earn' a team 'lunch out' during the work day (that of course we would also pay for), or that we could do a 'wellbeing walk' while also having a meeting, so... not exactly an opportunity to de-stress during the work day!
Honestly, I don't understand why these people don't pick up that they are becoming the architects of their own misery, constructing cages of their own making around themselves - and me! We don't have to play the game and turn everything into a positive. That isn't good for mental health OR morale overall either - it's just, ironically for the health background, putting a sticking plaster over a bigger wound. We need to grow up and actually address the issues we have as adults otherwise experienced and valuable staff are just going to end up burning out - which then increases the workload on everyone else and risks bringing the whole system back to square 1.

It has often been dismissed as utopian thinking, a pie-in-the-sky idea that wouldn’t survive contact with reality. But the four-day week has once again quietened critics, as the results of the world’s trial suggest that it’s a win-win for employees and their bosses.
Workers who adopted a shorter week with no loss of pay were found to be happier, more productive, took fewer sick days and generated more revenue for their employers, a landmark study has found.
The Study
Led by researchers at the University of Cambridge, England, the study assessed the impact of a pioneering four-day week trial, which took place in the UK between June and December 2022. Of the 61 firms that took part – among them online retailers, financial service providers and restaurants – 56 pledged to make the move permanent. [Note: That's 91% of the firms!!]
The Results
Researchers found that 71% of participants reported lower levels of burnout, with 39% saying they were less stressed than before the trial. What’s more, 60% found that they were better able to combine paid work with care responsibilities, while 62% said it was easier to combine work with their social lives.
Unsurprisingly, this translated into a 65% reduction in sick days, and a 57% drop in the number of staff leaving compared with the same six-month period the previous year.
Concerns that switching workers to a four-day week would impact profits did not materialise. In fact, when compared to a similar period from previous years, organisations reported revenue increases of 35 per cent on average.
Trials have continually proved successful
"We feel really encouraged by the results, which showed the many ways companies were turning the four-day week from a dream into a realistic policy, with multiple benefits,” said Dr David Frayne, research associate at University of Cambridge. “We think there is a lot here that ought to motivate other companies and industries to give it a try.”
The trial involved two months of preparation, with workshops, coaching, mentoring and peer support for participants. Resisting the idea that the trial must be ‘one-size-fits-all’, each firm designed a policy tailored to its particular needs.
Some academics have questioned the merits of a four-day week, arguing that it can create more stress for employees because they have the same amount of work to do in fewer hours.
Nevertheless, with trials taking place around the world, often with positive results, the shorter working week appears finally to be going mainstream.
Of the UK trial, Joe Ryle, director of the 4 Day Week Campaign, said: “This is a major breakthrough moment for the movement towards a four-day working week. Across a wide variety of different sectors of the economy, these incredible results show that the four-day week with no loss of pay really works.
“Surely the time has now come to begin rolling it out across the country.”

I am very open to feedback on whether I've changed enough to address the issue of Anti-Semitic tropes that was brought up previously. If anyone is still concerned or bothered by this post, please let me know!!
Transcript:
Cahill: You kids are messing everything up, I hope you know that. I’m done, I’m retired, I don’t get involved anymore. But… access to alien tech, knowledge, resources, in the hands of Agnos… shit.
Frankie: What is so special about this one company?
Cahill: Agnos is… more than just a company. They have a frightening amount of influence in the business world. Agnos is a matriarchy, captained by Oasis Springs’ very own Nancy Landgraab. Maybe you’ve heard of her?
Frankie: I thought she was in real estate.
Cahill: She’s got a lot of fingers in a lot of pies, let’s say.
Saf [reading from her computer]: “Landgraab founded Agnos with her business partner Nick Altos, but eventually forced him out and took over the helm solo. To protect her claim on the company, she recruited her closest friends and allies to the board, including other prominent celebrities and champions of business, like Katrina Caliente, Lily Feng, and Mortimer and Bella Goth. They claims to be “pushing the limits of scientific advancements” for the “good of all Simkind”, but it’s all bullshit.”
Cahill: They don’t care what new medicine or technology they discover, only that they do it before anyone else.
Frankie: Ok, I’m getting the picture. But what does this have to do with us?
Cahill: Well, Agnos has a history of looking the other way while their subsidiaries and contractors conduct research in a… less than ethical fashion.
Saf: Shit, Frankie… You might’ve been right…
Cahill: I imagine we’ve got such a situation here, with BioSim Tech.
Erwin: So when people in town go missing, they become the lab’s unwilling research subjects.
Cahill: Well, that’s my hunch at least. But I—what are you doing?
Frankie: Answering a phone call?
Cahill: Wrong. You’re exposing us all to the possibility of being compromised. From now on we need to operate as if they are listening to every conversation. That means no texts, no calls, no emails… nothing.
Frankie: Are you kidding me? No way.
Erwin: Frankie, he’s right.
Frankie: … Ugh, fine. [under her breath] I’m sorry, Saf…
[Frankie’s Voicemail]: Hi, this is Frankie’s phone…
Saf: What the hell?
Frankie: So… what now?
Cahill: Now… I suppose I help you kids get back into that goddamn lab.

@ reo writers who seem to think Reo hates the idea of working at his dad's company because he hates business and/or finds it soulless, soft reminder that he canonically reads the nikkei magazine and business books for fun, discusses the stock market on a casual outing with friends, has his own stocks, his favourite app is the stocks app, talks about investments like he's already done it before, and literally plans out his future career as a soccer player as a businessman would set up a 5 years plan.
He clearly doesn't hate the field. In fact, I'd say the opposite is true—he enjoys business a lot, clearly read and practiced it to an extent, and knows what he's talking about. In other words, he's good at it, and that's why he doesn't want a career in it. The whole field represents exactly what he loathes, things that are easy to obtain. Not only does the field lack the thrill of a real challenge to him cause he already mastered it easily, but it's also something he would just as easily step into by virtue of being born into the Mikage bloodline, as the heir of an empire handed down to him, and thus not something he'd earn with his own hands

Current situation where I live in a “great” school district in the US of A in 2023:
School cannot hire bus drivers. No one will take the job. (Honestly GOOD FOR HER!) (Pay a living wage!)
Whenever a bus driver calls out sick, a busload of kids isn’t getting to/from school on time. I know someone whose kid’s school ended at 2:30 and they got home at 5, hours late. This kid is like 7.
School district hired a consulting firm to come up with ideas about out how to solve this problem. (Pay a living wage.)
Now they’re all “Here are our options. We can make half the schools start early so that the buses can make two trips.” (This option would put the bus arrival time before 6am for some kids.) “We could require all teaching assistants to obtain a commercial driving license before we will hire them.” (?!?!?!?) “We could allow people as young as 18 to drive the school bus.” “We could stop driving some kids (magnet schools and expanded walk zones) to school.”
Pay bus drivers a living wage.
PAY 📢 THEM 📢 A 📢 LIVING 📢 WAGE
Ask a fucking toddler on the street and they will say PAY THEM MORE. Raise the taxes, pay them more.
I just—

I don't know who needs to hear this today, but having your own business isn't "working for yourself". Unless you literally grow your own food and live in a debt-free house not connected to electricity networks etc, you're working for your clients. You're dependent on their business to make an income. If they lack the money to pay for your products or services, you're shit outta luck. Having a business doesn't give you the magical ability to conjure money out of thin air, you're floating on the same current of economic instability as anyone taking a paycheck, you've just convinced yourself that you're independent when you're anything but.
But here's the thing: we're all dependent on each other, and there's nothing wrong with that. That reality has to be accounted for in your worldview. Capitalist individualism is a lie, there are no self-sufficient people. Rich people in particular are more dependent on others than anyone to maintain their lifestyle.
