Dragon's Dogma Primer + Tips

I've been spending tons of time with Dragon's Dogma 2. I loved the first game and was shocked they chose to make a sequel. Legitimately Dragon's Dogma is like, the only franchise that actually has the power to make me genuinely enjoy video games again like when I was a kid.

I also noticed that a lot of people new to the franchise have picked it up this time around and are bumping their heads against it, which is great! Now I'll actually have people to talk to about Dragon's Dogma :')

I wanted to write a little primer and 'beginners tips' to help people learn how to approach the series. Here's some pointers:

Dragon's Dogma gets a lot of comparisons to Dark Souls. I wouldn't say it's because it's a hard game, but it does expect you to approach it on its own terms and won't make many concessions to you if you try to fight it.

DD is a management game masquerading as an open-world RPG. What it expects of you is to move slowly and take your time. It wants you to plan your journey, anticipate challenges, pace yourself, and prepare accordingly. You'll find much less friction if you keep this in mind.

'Fast Travel' as a concept is hard to come by in DD, and you will find yourself walking most places. The ability to instantly teleport yourself anywhere is limited to Ferrystones and Portcrystals, which are both in very limited supply. DD2 has Oxcarts from major settlements, but these are also imperfect by-design as they are time-dependent and prone to attacks, which may leave you stranded. Remember: DD is by and large about preparation and long journeys. Try shortening your routes by exploring for shortcuts, or treating every trip like an opportunity to explore a new area on the way.

DD LOVES rare and consumable items. Some of the best and most useful items in the game are often unique and can only be used once or in a limited capacity. This helps make the items feel more exclusive, while also encouraging you to be doubly sure of your intention before using them. If an item seems like it could be rare, it probably is.

Explore everywhere. In my opinion, DD's level design is unmatched in terms of open-world games. There are things hidden absolutely everywhere in every nook and cranny. If you comb every location you will constantly find new things, and it goes out of its way to ensure exploration is rewarded. I don't think any video game does open world exploration quite as good as DD does.

The quest design is cryptic (and often questionable) and likes to challenge you. The game will say 'find [x] item' and not tell you where it is. Sometimes pawn knowledge may help, but expect to find it through exploring the world and digging around hidden corners. While some quests let you know where to go, don't always expect it.

Some side quests are gated by story progression and will become locked off when advancing the story. Make sure you finish all your side quests before advancing the story!

Don't jump in and accept every quest you see, as some quests are timed and some quests require a lot of preparation. For example, in DD1 escort quests involved escorting someone across the whole world. Read a quest carefully and know the terms before accepting it.

Timed quests are a thing, and usually act as a way to keep you on your toes and force you to prove your ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Expect to receive timed quests at any given moment, and adapt accordingly. They can be stressful.

New Game + is a major part of the game in the DD franchise. Things will happen in the game that will block you out of content. You will fail quests, make choices that block future content, consume items you didn't mean to, etc. NG+ is where you get to experience these all again, so don't worry too much if you weren't able to do it the first time around.

Per above, I personally avoid Googling stuff about the game or quests before doing them. Usually there are things you are going to miss, and reading about them sometimes feels worse than just discovering them later does!

There are two types of saves: "Hard" saves which occur when sleeping at an inn, and "Soft" saves done manually or via auto-save. Sometimes it's prudent to rest at an Inn before attempting major quest beats in case something goes awry.

DD loves consequences for your actions, and while every NPC in the game can be killed it is rarely ever worth it. In DD1, killing an NPC means they're gone forever, which can lock you out of new quests or progression and rewards related to that character. In DD2 there are resources costs to resurrect someone, which mitigates it slightly but still makes it not worth it.

'Forgeries' are a very cool mechanic that allow you to pay an NPC to make a copy of an item. The copy usually just looks identical, but this often allows you to keep quest items for yourself and turn in the forgery to a quest NPC. As with anything else, sometimes this may have future consequences!

Without spoiling anything: DD loves to radically change the open world. Watch out!

The Vocation system is worth exploring. For a cheap fee you can try out every class and find what works best for you, so if you start as a Fighter and hate being a Fighter you're never locked into it.

Levelling a vocation allows you to unlock passive abilities called 'augments' that can carry over between classes, and can help build your favourite vocation further.

Some Vocations have mobility skills (Levitate and Double-Vault). If you like exploring everywhere these are absolutely essential because they let you reach places some classes cannot.

Combining materials makes new items. Experiment to find new recipes.

In DD1 combining items often makes them heavier. In DD2 combining items often makes them lighter.

Every character in the game has an 'affinity' towards you, that changes with how you treat them. This has implications.

What I hope is that Emile takes a long, long break from the internet to become the person we all believed him to be, to truly become that bright light in the dark, rather than just another dark figure holding a flashlight. I don't hope for that as a supporter of him as I don't support who he is right now (as if I haven't said it enough), I hope for that as a fellow human who only wishes to see everyone become the best version of themself.

I think this post was exactly what I needed. I've finally gotten everything out in a cohesive (maybe?) and healthy manner, and I'm ready to become my best self. I will be beginning work on YouTube videos tomorrow, and will hopefully be posting Thursdays at 5 PM (in honor of DatPags whom has not uploaded in a long time).

To anyone who finished reading this post, thank you. From the bottom of my heart, thank you. Please, go become your best self, but do not do so by putting others down. Better yourself and acknowledge your flaws, overcome them, and do not repeat Emile's mistakes. Learn from those around you.

Listen, I'm not sure where this needs to go, but... since opening it, my throne gifts page has been great, and I just wanted to say that... to everyone using it, thank you. Throne gives you a space to write this to specific people, but I wanted to say it publicly.

Things haven't been great for me lately. I've you've caught some of my streams you know some of it, but... I'm struggling to put out a video that was supposed to hit in November. But something else hit me in November that has put a lot of fear and uncertainty in me since then.

It's been a distraction that makes everything take longer. And soon, things are probably going to take even longer than that. Some of it is overdue, necessary growth. I'm behind the curve in some important places in life. I have my reasons for why I am the way I am, reasons I am coming to accept are valid, but it doesn't change the fact I'm still behind. And some of this is just going to suck. It's going to hurt. It's going to be scary. And it's going to be worse because of the former.

Things like this are not trivial to me. Things like this remind me it's not over, even when I'm slow and stressed and distracted and possibly making things worse for myself. I've been thinking about everything I've gotten since Throne opened -- Tears of the Kingdom, Sonic Superstars, Sonic Colors Ultimate, Super Mario Wonder, and now 97% of this. And now I wanted to do something with all of these. Technically I did -- I streamed all of them, but I wanted to do videos or even just text talking about what I liked about these games or something. But I remain slow and distracted.

And that goes for more than just these, too. Friends have also gifted me things like Wolfenstein: The New Order specifically because they wanted me to talk about it here. I got gifted Freedom Planet 2 on release and I made plans to stream it and even that got sidelined by something else and I haven't circled back around yet. And I mean, jeeze, I could write multiple pages of games I've wanted to stream last year and didn't.

I don't want anyone to think less of me. I know I'm not as fast as I should be, and that makes me feel bad, but I've also been coming to terms with the fact I may never be as fast as I want to be for certain reasons that may contribute to burnout in me more easily than others.

So I just want to say... I'm sorry, but also thank you. This kind of stuff has been a light for me to stay anchored to during a time where I both feel like I know exactly what I need to do but also incredibly lost on what's going to happen. It's just video games, but it's more than nothing.

I will always try to do my best.

without further ado... Sparks Austin recap

I won’t elaborate but the two days of travel to get here were very exhausting and trying. I rolled up to the venue, prepared to maybe sit during some songs and nurse a Diet Coke. 

I had never been to Austin before and boy, is it a music oriented city. Not just the venues but the people, the culture. There were multiple fans in Hippo tour shirts, a fully cosplayed Cate Blanchett, and lots of women in beautiful dresses. The Moody Center’s hallway had snapshots of all the cool people that had played there. I love venues with history!

I was worried that the venue set up would be annoying or awkward but I got to my front row seat and I was 4 feet from the stage, just off to the left of Ron’s piano - the perfect view.

The show started... a lot of U.S. venues had audiences who mostly sat and then got up during MTCYDT but the two thirty something hipster dudes behind me stood the whole time so I got to stand and dance :) And a good chunk of the crowd on the left stayed standing too! I was drenched with sweat maybe 4 songs in and it was amazing. All my tiredness and stress melted away as I was loudly singing and dancing.

This crowd was electric, so loud and responsive and to the Latte cuts too! Not just the hits! People were going crazy for TGICIHL in a way that Milwaukee was more subdued about. Russell smiled at me really big early in the show, probably because I knew the words and was loud and enthusiastic. I got a cute SMWS Russell tummy jump video which I will post later.

During  Nothing Is As Good As They Say It Is, I obviously knew the way Russell sashayed and waved his arm back and forth during the chorus from other shows and was mimicking him. He locked eyes with me and we did the hand punctuating thing at each other during that TWICE.

I am a “woo”er I will freely admit that and so I am constantly obnoxiously screaming and clapping and just being super loud. So I obviously was screaming my head off when Ron got up for Shopping Mall Of Love. During the second chorus he looked DIRECTLY at me and went “yeah ✊” I will post video later but I was shakinggggggg.

There were lots of loud applause breaks and late-ish in the show (can’t remember when), Ron looked directly at me again and mouthed “thank you”. Like no thank YOUUUUUUUU KING!

I know Russell bounces around a lot on stage, HOWEVER, the way this stage was set up, it was probably a bit harder to get to our side of the stage, but he came over a lot anyway and I have to think it was partially because of me because he seemed to almost be finding excuses to come dance with us even when he was about to have to start singing again 🤗

I’m not sure how or why Russell would ever EVER feel self conscious about his tummy.... I was lucky to get it captured during SMWS... during MTYCTD though he danced over and it was too fast for me to get filmed but I basically was 4 feet from the man and watched his tummy bounce out from under his t-shirt for a good 5-7 seconds... mesmerized is the most polite way to put how I felt in that moment but oh my fucking god 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 [redacted] [censored] [an oncoming train whistle obscures what i’m about to say] but suffice it to say [meme voice] I think I hauve covid...

And the open collar and sweat obviously..... yeah.

As I divulged to a few of you and was encouraged by @jefffreybeaumont, the plan was to make a sign that says “YOU’RE MUCH HOTTER THAN THE GALLAGHER BROTHERS” because in interviews they’re always being asked how they don’t fight like the Gallaghers or the Davies. The secret spice was typing it out in Barbie font. I somehow managed to not get it wrinkled in my over 1000 mile 2 day voyage and held it up during the shuffle. I don’t think Russell could read it because he was farther away but during the shuffle I held it up. It was hard to tell Ron’s reaction because I was multitasking but I watched later and sent it to @rhythmthlef and she says his face showed “bemused self effacement” fdkjgkldjsfkg. 

Something I’d stupidly personally worried about for ages was that Ron and Russell didn’t care about the U.S. as much - the U.K. has always embraced them and I’d worried that they didn’t think of these shows as special or meaningful because radio stations here don’t give them the time of day and they don’t always sell out. Since Chicago, I don’t worry about that anymore. Their faces shine with excitement, pride, and pure joy at EVERY SHOW. They’ve gotten more fans since TSB and opportunities that they wouldn’t have gotten ten years ago, even in the U.S. I mean, NPR Tiny Desk! Wow. Russell was emphasizing that the feelings of the shows “don’t go away when we go to the next city” and I could tell that he really meant it. 

Eli came out for the encore in the bucket hat and a red Southern style bandana - very cute. The man who took the photo handed Russell his cowboy hat beforehand and Russell says, “Oh yeah, my hat.” He then proceeds to put it on, smirk confidently at the audience, and say, “What’s up, yall? You from these parts?”WHAT IS WRONG W HIMMMMMMMM GFHJDKJGFKLDSJFKDS CALIFORNIA DOOFUS!!! And I fought for my life squeezing into the pic but I’m in there! Right behind the keyboard!

The pic is taken and I know my chance is now. I start screaming for Ron (who was a bit closer to me) but he doesn’t hear me. I then start screaming at the top of my lungs “RUSSELL!!! I HAVE A LETTER!! RUSSELL!!” and after about 7 times he hears and sees me and meanders over and takes the letter and 2 rainbow Sparks logo acrylic pins (the ones I sold to some of yall a couple months ago)! I’m not sure if they’ll wear the pins but I had to try. I do hope they read the letter - they really do mean everything to me. I was unsure that I’d get their attention at all, so I didn’t get the moment I handed it on film, but I do have a video of Russell holding and then glancing down at the letter. They were leaving the stage and Russell stopped to hold hands with multiple people on his way offstage.

I stood there for a minute, very emotional, then made my way out. As I left, a security guard off to the side went “Hey, you sang all night man, that was great.” and I just replied “They’re my favorite band, you’ve gotta be passionate, y’know, thanks!” Even non fans know I’m a real one kgcjkgjfdkjgfd.

My Lyft driver was super sweet and chatty and I rode back to my hotel feeling like I was floating on a cloud.

Random sidenotes: A) They cut “Toughest Girl In Town” which I didn’t realize til later - I’m sure they’re getting tired near the end of the tour B) Eli is truly such a talented guitarist? He slayed the Bon Voyage solo. He was right in front of me so I really got to see him shine (in my brief moments not zeroed in on Ron and Russell) but obviously the whole band is amazing C) I sent Alissa snaps of me during Beaver O’Lindy and they said “You’re almost singing louder than Russell is” kdgfjkdjkg D) This was the one time I didn’t cry during It Doesn’t Have To Be That Way because I was sweating so much that [Lucille Bluth voice] I couldn’t spare the moisture E) I will share a few videos but I swear my singing is horrendous and embarrassing so just the key moments jfdgjfi F) I used almost 10GB of memory on photos and videos...

The plan is to get a Sparks tattoo within the year. I’ve gotta do it. They are so special to me. I’ve been into bands before and I don’t regret any of it but this feels different and special. This truly feels like where I belong as a fan and a person and as someone who has always felt strange and awkward and out of place. But there’s one place and one song and that’s Sparks.

Star Gazing

Jun and Chae go on an incredibly late night walk.

pairing: chae x jun

genre: hurt/comfort, just a smidge angst

word count: 1k, short and sweet

warnings: alludes to Yun grieving, a stress breakdown of sorts

On most stressful days, Chae was usually tired enough to pass out after laying in bed. But with Yun on hiatus (and rightfully so, she would never be upset with her about that), and the rest of the members stressed out, trying to fill in the missing pieces of their comeback, Chae had grown restless.

It was maybe around 2 in the morning when Chae shoved her covers off of her, grabbed her phone, some headphones, and a hoodie, before leaving her shared room with Jeonghan as quietly as possible. 

Chae sighed to herself, struggling to put on her converse. She reached over to the wall to try to balance herself but misjudged how far she would have to extend her arm and ended up tripping over her own feet, landing on the mat by their front door. She winced at the brief moment of pain but went back to the task at hand.

Seventeen had many nightowls, so it wasn’t uncommon for someone to pull an allnighter. Jun, however, was one of their best sleepers, and was the last person Chae expected to be silently watching her putting her converse on from the kitchen. 

“How long have you just been standing there?”

Jun shrugs.

“You’ve been watching me the entire time?” Chae exasperatedly asks. “What are you even up for? Go to bed.”

Jun wishes that he was in bed, but for whatever reason, Seungkwan and Dino were both still up, watching youtube videos together and laughing their asses off. He had gotten up to grab a glass of water and was sipping on it when Chae walked past the kitchen. He could tell she was annoyed by how fast she was trying to get out the door but was still trying to decide if he should interrupt her moment or leave the kitchen without her noticing. 

He sets down his glass and walks over to Chae, “Couldn’t sleep. Where are you going?”

Chae yawns and she rubs her hands against her face before responding, “On a walk, I guess? Just want to clear my head.”

Jun nods understandingly and grabs a random jacket that was thrown on a nearby chair, “Cool, I’ll come with.”

“Jun, you really don’t have to.”

“I know. But I like making sure you’re safe and could probably use the walk myself, so we go together.”

…

The first ten minutes of their walk is in complete silence. Chae opts to not put on her headphones, instead enjoying the quietness of being outside when no one else was. There is a slight breeze blowing through her hair, not strong enough to make her feel chilly but it was still refreshing. She can tell that Jun was enjoying himself too, occasionally kicking a rock that is on their path or slowing down when he catches himself walking a little faster than Chae. 

Neither of them knew where they were going, but enjoyed the simplicity in just walking. They eventually end up in a park and sit at a bench facing a playground. 

“I’m glad-” Jun jumps in his seat at the suddenness of Chae’s voice interrupting their silence and Chae laughs at him.

“I’m glad you came with me.”

“Yea?”

“Yea.” Jun looks over at Chae, she is sitting with her head leaned back so that she’s looking at the sky and her butt is at the edge of the bench. “I like looking at the stars with you.” The gentleness in her voice is endearing to Jun and he can’t help but copy her position and gaze at the stars as well.

Chae lifts her arm and points at what Jun can only assume is a star.

“That’s you.” She says before moving her finger over a little bit, “And that's Myungho. And Nix. And Edyth, and Seungkwan, and Wonwoo, and Dk, and Cheol, and Dino, and Yun, and Mingyu, and Woozi, and Hoshi, and Jeonghan, and Vernon, and Josh.”

Her hand drops, but Jun is quick to grab it and pointing it at a very specific star, “And that's you. You're our North Star, Chae. You tell us where to go when we get lost. You light the way.”

Chae pulls her hand away from Jun and sits up. Jun once again mirrors her, and realizes that Chae is now crying softly. She uses her hands to cover her face and doesn’t let Jun pull them away. Instead, he tosses an arm over her shoulder and pulls her until she’s leaning into him.

“What if,” Chae sniffles, “What if I don’t know where to go anymore? What if I don’t know how to help?”

Jun uses the hand that isn’t wrapped around Chae to smooth out her hair. “You don’t need to know how to help all of the time, Chae. Sometimes, just knowing that you are there with us, offering comfort, is enough. You are more than enough.”

Chae cries a little bit harder and Jun hugs her a little bit tighter.

“Don’t forget that you’re a star like the rest of us, okay? And we want to help you too.” Jun feels Chae nod her head against his shoulder. 

The two go back to enjoying each other's presence in silence. Until Jun notices that Chae is starting to fall asleep on top of him. He nudges her a little bit and Chae jerks awake.

“We should head back.” Jun says.

Chae nods in agreement. She lets Jun hold her hand and pull her away from the bench. He holds her hand the entire walk back to the dorms and even helps her untie her shoelaces when they make it back.

Before entering her room, Chae glances at Jun, who is watching her from his own door to his room. 

She leans in his direction and whispers, “Thanks, Jun.”

He leans toward her too, “No problem, Chae.”

The two smile at each other one last time before entering their rooms and going to sleep.

Dark Souls offered most of itself up front, but still had you wanting to find more, because it inspired within you something you care about and want to see continued. There's a lot of classes and weapon types, ya pick up rocks for upgrades, find a merchant and some cool shortcuts. Cool items and just alot of things that make ya stop and consider, and want to see fleshed out more. And the further you go, the more it fleshes out, and the more difficulty there is. It starts off hard, ish, but teaches you it's mechanics through intuitive design and making things obvious, while leaving some thing obscured for you to figure out, but those mechanics were never completely hidden or unspoken in ways that will fuck you over later.

it also inspired you to learn the mechanics and respect/trust the developer's intent and design. Because it Earns that trust. The tutorial area may be shit but you're lying if you said it didn't make you feel confident in the design of the game. That's it's purpose. To make you Trust the Design and Trust there's a Real Intention behind the choices made in development.

Bloodborne offers absolutely fucking nothing. Absolutely nothing of itself. It doesn't inspire trust or confidence, it goes out of it's way to make you disgusted you're wasting your fucking time. It throws a big enemy that I managed to beat with my bare hands, but nobody new would stand a fuckin' chance towards, which teaches the player the worst fucking everything you cans.

For one thing, there aren't any enemies necessarily to avoid. They're all badly designed and you will take damage no matter who where or what and why. You Will Take Damage. This is a Damage-Trading game at it's Heart and it will FIGHT you to remain that way. Except you have basically 3 hits before death. All enemies take more hits than necessary but take full chunks off your health. You have Only One Way to Interact. If it's not the useless bombs, then all you can do is spam the attack button because if you STOP AT ALL they immediately aren't stunned and attack instantly. Heavy attacks take Way the fuck too long, enemies attack within mere frames of speed. They removed backstabs, but added a broken mechanic where if you do a heavy attack from behind, it stuns them and then you can backstab them. Except it rarely works? Ever? It's completely broken? Much like poise! Every enemy has 0 poise but that's because none of them can be stunned, except small enemies who, the second you miss or stop attacking, you Will get hit because you can't possibly dodge out of attacks fast enough. I-Frames are practically non-existent if they even programmed any at all.

Don't get me started on the attack patterns because my god they're completely fucking random. Again. You know, fromsoft, it's okay to be able to Eventually Read the enemy's attacks, right? Like. It's not okay to make Undodgeable attacks in the first place, but having them look the same as every other fast as shit attack? Maybe chill the fuck out and have fun???? Maybe this advertising shit doesn't translate to good gameplay just because it looks Epic and Cool in videos and streams?

Oh my god I really need to stress that you do No Fucking Damage Whatso-ever but you fucking DIE after 2-3 hits. It's abysmal. This makes Every Encounter the Exact Same. R1. Dodge backwards. Wait for random attack pattern to potentially not have a random 5th or 12th attack at the end, Run because you have to be as far away as possible, do an attack and hope it hits, if you don't, you get hit, dodge away.

or to simplify: Run, Attack, Dodge, Wait. Run. Attack. Dodge. Wait.

Every.

Fucking.

Encounter.

Every god damn one.

Your pistol does 11 damage.

Every enemy has nearly or more than 1k.

Hit, dodge backwards, hope to god you don't attack to soon or you'll RUN STRAIGHT INTO THE ENEMY TO DO A FUCKING REGARDED ATTACK. Congrats on the fucking utter lack of playtesting to have this in your fucking game still. Jesus christ. Back-stepping is completely useless in every game, but they keep putting it in there! And they added an attack to it aswell! And they REPLACED THE DODGEROLL BACKWARDS WITH IT! SO NOW YOU ALWAYS DO THE SPECIAL ATTACK THAT JUST GETS YOU KILLED BY WHIFFING AND THEN PUTTING YOU BACK INTO THE SPHERE HITBOX SURROUNDING THE ENEMY.

And you have less than a SECOND to put ONE attack in, if you put 2 in, you're ALWAYS getting hit. It's not fun. It's not fun at all to fucking put TACKS into a GOD to KILL IT. It's fucking BORING. I'm not fucking Peter Pan going for tiny shanks in the shower you fucking idiots. I'm a hunter! A fucking warrior! Lemme hit them at least GOD DAMN TWICE! WHY! WHY WOULD I WANT TO DO 28/28000 DAMAGE TO A BOSS! SLOWLY!

At the LEAST get rid of the FUCKING Estus flask cap. If you're NOT going to playtest your fucking game, at the least RELY ON POOR DESIGN TO GET THE PLAYER THROUGH. At the least I could say "Okay they planned the boss around the infinite health potion mechanic, very poor" instead of "GOD THEY DIDN'T FUCKING PLAYTEST THIS SHIT ONCE!"

Mother fuckers over-HYPED this garbage. Go play fuckin' Dark Souls! The first one! The ONLY good god damned souls game! How is it possible I started with 3 & 2, Elden Ring, but Dark Souls, in 2022 a game from 2011, THE LAST one I played, still, Still, is better than anything Fromsoft has put out since. How do you Regress further and further?

No Buy 2023 - Art Supplies

Hello, hello and Good Morning! It's not quite January anymore to make new year resolutions but about a month ago I decided I need to do something about my art supply hoarding tendencies :D;;; Even if I'm not even close to what I see on art videos, it doesn't quite sit well with me when I have more than I use and clutter is something I don't like around me.

So! This year, let's tackle some art supplies with reckless abandon!!

Step 1 - Catalog all your supplies I want to say this was a tough one but it was actually fairly easy for me. I could mostly name everything from the top of my head xD:; And to be expected the most glaring issue with me was all the unfinished sketchbooks that I keep piling. I listed, ahem...about fourteen sketchbooks... 2 of which are pass half point to finish, 8 of which are started and for one reason or another abandoned and rest are not even opened.

Whenever I get the urge to buy new sketchbooks I will remind myself of the list I made. I'm fairly sure I got some more hiding in random corners too.

Anyway! Target list:

Step 2 - Discard what is no longer usable Ok testing everything did take time but it did also cut some chunk of art supplies. It also made me realize I had some markers I barely used and they had dried out exactly cause I had barely used them... a lesson to learn. Again. About a year ago I noticed some of my fave colors have dried cause I was savoring them maybe a bit too much lol. Once more the copics are holding up like absolute troopers. Sad to say the spectrum noir markers just dry really fast, especially if you aren't using them as soon as you open them. They are still wonderful markers mind you!

Well, I don't plan to use my copics with reckless abandon but I do plan to use all the watercolors I have for I have quite a lot xD;; including tubes, another set and gouache set that I have stashed away;;;

Step 3 - Pair the materials! I usually tend to make a test ground page at the start of every sketchbook but if I'm to test everything ... I may burn out so, I'll just stick to quick tests and if something doesn't work out, turn a page and carry on.

Step 4 - Write down the progress! If you're like me, you exist with little lists and check box and see everything as little exp bar that you feel and celebrate when you complete it :D;; And this challenge is no different for me. Every month I will be writing down what I've used, did I actually used all of it, did I learn or enjoy this medium etc...

But yes, this will be my process for the year! Maybe by end of December I will have a long post of what I finished, what I didn't etc :D;; hopefully more finished than unfinished! At the end art is personal and it should be done in a way that sparks joy for you. For me, I need order in my compulsive doodling tendencies. Unfinished things stress me and I hope I get to close the last pages of some sketchbooks and throw away some empty art supplies now that they served their purpose - maybe even discover that I really enjoy some mediums I barely had used before \o/

i watch this youtuber called daydrian harding and he’s the funniest mf on yt, that’s besides the point but he uploads like MAYBE twice a month, mostly once a month, his relationship w his fans is truly amazing and his merch shipping is so fast.

ANYWAYS back to the upload schedule, he dosent have a schedule, he mostly uploads whenever he deals but it’s at least once a month, BUT the editing is always really good and he has subtitles on the screen when somethings hard to hear, and his videos are always 30+ mins and is clearly filmed over multiple days if not weeks, i honestly don’t mind the change in the triplets schedule BC of this. because i know that quality is waaaay better than quantity, ik we’re so used to 2-3 videos a WEEK but that is a lottttt. and it just dosent feel like it cus we used to it.

sorry for the yap session but that’s why i don’t mind them changing their schedule, it’s gotta be stressful too. hopefully this can change some ppls mindset on being upset abt it☹️ luv u minaaaa

This is so nice to hear he sounds so coollllll :-( People should be more open minded about the boys uploading schedule it’s really stressful as is but im only assuming they like posting twice a week hence why they’re keeping it that way. But i wouldn’t be opposed to one video a week or three videos a month and then they just stream or something whenever they play video games 🤷🏻‍♀️There’s so many ways but there’s already so much content from them, if the triplets put out long, quality videos once a month i’d love it. But their schedule right now is more than enough, just being able to see them and hear them once in awhile is enough for me so im hoping there will be be less whiners and complainers out there in the future 😭

Welcome to my very first post on Tumblr ever (help me I have no idea what I'm doing), and the opener for a new decades playthrough! I've been Simming since 2000, and this is by far my favorite way to play.

Some things to know:

I go by a different time table than the classic Decades challenge. I don't switch decades until the next generation is born, which is weird and doesn't make a lot of sense, but well same here so this is what we're doing. When playing the traditional way, I find that the game starts moving too fast, and the 18 collective hours I've spent downloading vintage CC seems like a much less effective use of my time. So my playthrough is starting with 1880 (founders), and will become 1890 with the YA birthday of their first child, and will STAY 1890 until the next generations heir has their YA birthday. If this sounds too confusing/dumb, please leave because I am the most confusing and dumb bitch you'll ever meet. But I've spent thousands of dollars on this franchise over the last 23 years and I owe it to myself to do the absolute most.

I'm really not a storyteller, I don't use poses, and I don't edit my screenshots, 50% because I'm lazy and 50% because I don't know how. There will be a paper-thin attempt at something resembling a plot, but that's about as deep as it gets. I love this game the most when it gets weird.

I fill the world with gallery Sims that are hashtagged with the appropriate time period, so that the background characters are still very appropriate without me having to actually make them. Again, lazy. So you may see some Sims you recognize, if you do the same or happened to have made those Sims. The same is true of some buildings, which may be lightly edited on occasion, and which I will never take credit for or pretend to have built. All Sims that see any playtime and all buildings that the legacy family live in will be 100% made by me.

I'm new please be gentle :3 I'm truly just here to dump screenshots and hopefully find people to interact who are also this into this game.

Once upon a Monday around 8pm, an imaginary, immortal cartoon based on a human loser, got extremely bored. Sure; she's immortal, with immortal versions of her partner and pets to keep her company, and also unlimited money and artificially perfect skin. But what's it all about?

And then, a brainstorm. Why not create imaginary people and control every aspect of their lives? But they can't enjoy the decadence that usually comes with being a pretend person, because that's just boring. The best part is when they're stressed out, right? So they'll have to be pretty damn quaint.

She built a church to the only deity she had ever fully believed in: Dibella. Of the Nine Divines, Goddess of beauty and love, from a video game series so 1) appropriate and 2) also very imaginary. From the pulpit, she could call her little sheep to flock, checking in on their lives and encouraging a meager lifestyle. Just because we KNOW the cheat codes, doesn't mean we should USE the cheat codes.

Three newlywed couples were created.

Imogene and Ambrose Merriment,

Mathilda and Vernon Revelry,

and Amina and Roger DeBauch.

After an afternoon spent around their adorable little gathering place, she decided on the Merriment family being her primary focus, receiving the most attention and the least control of their own fates. All three families will be largely controlled, but not to the same obsessive level as the Merriments.

They were given a farm, complete with a barn, cow, chickens, small garden plot with seed packets, and 100 Simoleons. Much more important, they were given a randomized mixed-breed puppy, Llewelyn, for protection and company.

Setup complete, let the great experiment begin!

Armored core 6 spoiler posting ! This time for the ng+ run and the ending I did, and my thoughts on ng3 thus far:

This time the ending I got for my second run was “the fires of raven”

Pretty hardcore name for recreating the apocalypse and simply leaving the planet, but I get why Walter and Carla wanted it done. They’re the kind of people where the ends justifies the means. Eliminating all life on this planet, for the sake of containing and destroying an organic energy fuel substance that was on its way of leaking out to the space, spreading to other planets, more corporate wars fought for this fuel, and in the end leading to more fires of ibis situations on other planets

Or would it?

The game intentionally never (or at least hasn’t) explained WHY the first fires of ibis happened, and I’m just gonna go ahead and guess allmind is behind this, the group that’s been the most IN GAME but with the least story impact, and my second guess is the group that the original raven is from, killed that lil bitch twice don’t show your face around me again unless u wanna talk >:|

I doubt it’s ravens group tho. A mission I did on the side made it sound like the original raven leaked the information about coral LEADING to the corporations even knowing about rubricon. And it’s giving government leak/Edward Snowden vibes which to ME is a good guy position, now ALLMIND…..

They got some scary descriptions for the allmind arena. Yeah, AllMind exists for mercenaries (aka me) but.. the descriptions include stuff talking about fusing mech with the human mind to make some sort of link, make the body of the mech feel like the body of the pilot? Weird stuff, Also the allmind lady called me a “humanoid”, what’s that about???? Rusty seems to know my true identity since the second he met me (Walter suggests this), and Ayre suggests we’ve met before? So I’m thinking 621 was involved in the fires of ibis situation somehowwww

Then there’s all the hidden notes about these 2 scientists? And their sons that pick up that their scientist dads are losing their minds? There’s a lot im not piecing together at the moment, but there’s a lot of things that haven’t been explained fully, not that they need to, but I can feel an “aha” moment coming. I’m taking a break from the game tho I speed ran the game to get the second ending over with for this upcoming ng+ 3 run that I started (😭 I’m tired)

She was SOOOOO annoying the whole run. I’m so bugged by her doting girlfriend, yelling at me to survive WHILE all I’m doing IS surviving, her character is shoved on you, she hardly has offers any insight into coral other than coral is alive (you call them your brothers and sisters but can you get the mechs powered by coral to stop killing me????), ayre get a life!!! I hate mascot characters and I hate bitches (whiny girls) SHOVED ON YOU in any game, sorry!!! And u know what? she did actually get a life, I was so happy she fucked off, got in a robot herself, and started doing shit for herself even if it meant the first thing she did upon gaining autonomy was going in to kill me. Go girl!!!!! now what hurt was putting down rusty, but I killed him too fast, so fast that my monkey brain outsped the sad feeling I was supposed to associate with doing that, and I was glad they gave him two health bars.. because the first one I kinda mowed down and I felt semi bad about it and then when he got back up I (in full video game enjoying mode) went all chuuni and yelled “I LIKE THAT AMBITION OF YOURS RUSTY” and Then mowed him down again. So now I’ve gotta go to YouTube bc I didn’t save the fight to fully process what Rusty was yelling at me because when I’m under high stress I don’t hear anymore I just get the job done 😫

Gotta take a break tho, ng3 gave me a mission that wasn’t in my first 2 runs of the game and in that mission they shoved in those wheel skeletons from ds1 on me (😡😡😡) and THAT was the hardest mission I’d had in a while, so much so that it drained me of wanting to play after that (that and I had been doing nothing but play the game for the past 2 maybe 3 days) 💤

Griggs head-canons

Warnings: Talk about mental health, mentions of a fight

Grew up with his father's grandparents due to his dad being in the military and his mother dying during birth. (His mother’s parents are either dead or just live up north, I can see both of these so…)

Was a fat baby, still has the chubby cheeks to prove it too.

Since his grandparents really raised him, he calls them mom and dad and his dad by his name. (like how kids call people by what they've heard, that's him)

Grandparents spoiled him, especially during Christmas.

His dad ended up being discharged from the military due to his declining mental health. He has horrible PTSD and anxiety, he has a service dog to help with this. (It’s a retired military belgian shepherd)

This happened when Griggs was around 10 or 11

His dad's mental health started declining after his wife died during childbirth, and then being in the military didn’t help with his grieving and mourning process.

His dad is really overprotective and a worry-rat when it comes to Griggs. He comes off as strict and cold, but he’s trying really hard to make sure Griggs is safe. He trusts Griggs, it’s other people he has an issue with. (Griggs loves his dad though and tries to not stress him out)

Grew up Christian but now doesn't care much at all for religion. (he's just kinda like indifferent, but like when near death situations he's saying a little prayer in his head that his Grandparents say) 

From Louisiana because it just makes sense to me. He doesn’t seem like he has a Louisiana accent, but when he starts talking fast you can really hear it. 

Did wrestling and football in middle and high school. As well as JROTC because they gave it to him freshman year and didn’t bother changing his schedule. He had a wide variety of friends and was very popular. (He was the nice popular guy that everyone loved)

He was a very successful wrestler and football player in high school and got offered many scholarships, but he didn’t want a career in professional sports. Instead he joined the military. He liked the benefits, paycheck, and the schedule it offered. (He likes a schedule. Oh he would gets to be around people) 

Obviously his dad had a huge issue with his choice. They got into a huge fight, and some things were said that they both didn’t mean. His Grandparents were on his side and that set his dad off even more. Luckily his dad didn’t do anything drastic and just got into a screaming match with everyone. After everyone calmed down and had some time to think, his dad supported his decision. (The military was glad to have another Griggs in service, his dad was very good at his job so Griggs had big shoes to fill) 

Griggs is also taking college courses while in the military. 

Old soul, he sits/stands exactly like his grandpa and is always in bed by 7 or 8 pm. Also eats like an old person. (I’m talking slow as hell and he has a big plate filled with beans)

Really like Jack black, has seen all his movies 

He likes dogs, like a huge dog person. Cane corso and really all bully breeds are his favorite type. (He doesn’t mind cats…it’s just dogs are wayyyy better in his opinion)

Extrovert, loves being around people (It’s what he used to) 

That being said he does still have a social battery, and when it’s low he is ready to go. (like he won’t wait on you, he has to go now before he gets grumpy)

Not picky on what he watches really, he'll watch anything you put on. But if he thinks it's stupid or dumb he is going to tell you and make you change it. He's also like this with music

Foodie obviously, he watches cooking shows and any cooking video that comes his way. He knows everything about food, okay? Best griller ever as well.

He loves making his family recipes for his friends/partner

Top 2 love languages are acts of service and words of affirmation. He's not big on PDA, he just wants to hold your hand or wrap an arm around your shoulders. In private though, he's hugging and cuddling you 24/7.

He dates anyone who he finds attractive and who he enjoys to be around. (He doesn’t really have a type, he’s dated all kinds of people)

Doesn't get scared from horror movies and shit like that

Can't prank him, he knows when your faking or when something isn't real (also you don't wanna prank him bc when it comes to flight or fight, he always choosing fight) 

Really likes amusement parks, he fucking loves roller coasters or any extreme ride

Probably has a secret fursona he’s had since high school. (It’s an Alexander Archipelago wolf that is covered in scars, OR it’s a Dogue de Bordeaux that owns a gun shop. He would prefer the realistic style but he thinks the classic cartoon furry is cute too.)

I think he’s either 35 or 38 

Has a twitter and actually enjoys how fucked up everyone is on there. He doesn’t get into discourse or debates but he goes through like threads and threads of them. He always forms an opinion and tells Demon Dogs about the whole thing. He also has a reddit and loves r/AITA. He’ll actually talk on his reddit to give people advice. (He has an instagram but he barely goes on there)  

He actually reads and sketches a lot. He reads any book that teaches him about animals, history, the planet, plants, etc. He likes to sketch his favorite pictures in his books or nature scenes.

Since he has a welcoming and charming personality, everyone is comfortable with him almost instantly. But do not mistake him for a people pleaser, he does not care to try to appeal to anyone and everyone. 

I also think he is one of the more mentally stable CoD characters, he has his moments but he knows how to take care of himself and what his limits are. 

Aside from Demons Dogs, he’s really great friends with the members of SAS and Warcom. (His favs are Gaz and Price from SAS, and then Alex and Ronin from Warcom)

Thoughts on the Karl Jacobs thread

Market share may be good for the company, but it’s not necessarily good for you, the customer. I think Karl could do better in being aware of these types of nuances in the future.

On Apr 4 Karl replied to the Twitch Support Twitter account with some thoughts about their announcement that they were going to implement sponsored streams on Twitch.

Karl, in a four-tweet reply thread, stressed that he was “wildly unimpressed” and called the implementation a “malicious and manipulative bandaid solution”,  arguing that Twitch should not implement sponsored streams, and should instead focus on growth and market share over profitability. This seemed odd to me, that Karl would suggest that a company as large as Twitch was misstepping by trying to do something so egregious as turn a profit. But it appeared I was in the minority, going by the overwhelmingly favorable replies and quote tweets.

So I made this post. Just to present another way of thinking about this issue :)

Is growth and market share a good thing for a company to hold? Sure, for the company. In fact, increasingly the attitude of startup companies is to ignore profits for longer and longer time periods so they can get exactly that- the lion’s share of a market/user base (think Amazon, Uber). However, we have to remember two things:

There is a real cost (money, and people) to doing business this way

The monetary debt that is racked up has to come due at /some/ point, and users often pay the price

1: The cost of growth - regular companies without large pockets are unable to compete with growth companies, going out of business and leaving all the power in the hands of a few giant corporations

Amazon notoriously operated at razor thin (to nonexistent) profit margins for years. They /purposefully/ sold their merchandise for less than it was worth, operating at a loss specifically so they could put competitors out of business. Diapers.com, Zappos, nearly Barnes & Noble, likely several others that were too small to be mentioned - competitors gone, absorbed, or maimed. Uber purposefully used introductory pricing, lowering their fees to make their inroads into the market, cannibalizing Yellow Cab. All for the sake of growth. Amazon kept its edge by copying real products from real hard working people and making rip-off versions so that they don’t have to do any development work and instead can capitalize on the success of anyone that comes along.

THIS is how growth works - get big, and get big fast, and eff the poor guy who is in the way, even if their product is /better/. (Even if their product is priced the way it is so they can afford to pay their employees!!)

And if this seems too abstract (companies compete all the time, so what?), it’s real to you - the more growth tactics put competitors out of business, the more power the few companies left will hold. And they don’t always use it well.

Have you ever tried to get a hold of Instagram or YouTube if someone falsely flags your post/video? The recommended method (known by large creators as well, even though they have representatives to help them get around it) is not to go through the company’s appeal process, it’s to go to Twitter and AT the company! Ticketmaster, which holds 70% of the ticket market, implements service fees on top of the ticket price (some which go to the venue, some which they take as profit) - and these can be pricey, but if you want to see major acts, you’re stuck!

Market share may be good for the company, but it’s not necessarily good for you. The more power a single corporation has, the less they have to pay attention to any individual customer’s needs, so you’re sol if you have issues with how they treat you - they have a million more users waiting to replace you.

2: Growth companies rack up costs that have to be paid back, and these costs are often passed on to the customer

Growth companies lose money on their products through introductory pricing, (and paying employees and buying server space and and and) but they can’t stay making no profits forever for (at least) two reasons:

a - unfavorable business conditions and

b - competitors with bigger pockets.

A - Not too long ago, a virus no one saw coming impacted the entire world, closing 700,000 businesses in the US alone. These businesses went under because they had no money. It might be ‘annoying’ that Twitch is introducing sponsored streams, but these streams bring in money to help keep the doors open in case any unforeseen events happen in the future. It’s good for Twitch to be profitable, it’s like having a savings account of funds to dip into in bad weather times.

B - Growth companies have to fight /other/ growth companies. Netflix was happy putting Blockbuster out of business... until it met Disney+ and Amazon Prime and HBO Max and and and. Twitch was happy without sponsored streams... until Kick and YouTube decided to push for streaming. These growth companies are fine making no money as long as they’re the biggest fish - they can always milk their users for money later. But the moment they find a competitor who can steal their users and put them out of business, suddenly the scramble is on for cash.

Where does the cash to keep the doors open come from? In some way, shape or form, the user generally has to pay for it. Either they do what Uber did and bring prices back up once they want to turn a profit or they do what Netflix is doing and introduce an ad-based tier/no password sharing, or they do what YouTube did and introduce ads or what Twitch is doing and kill the 70/30 split for their favorites and introduce sponsored streams - eventually all of these companies have to stop eating loses and make a plan for profitability, and that price hike or decline in the user experience will always come after (sometimes years after) they have lured in enough users with introductory rates that no one can meaningfully complain.

So what do we do? And what does this mean for what Karl tweeted?

I think we need to slow the roll with the growth tactic stuff. Profitability is not a bad word (see: Apple). It (generally) means you have a good product/service/idea and it’s selling well. What is ‘malicious and manipulative’ might actually be the way growth companies do business, putting competitors out of commission through unfair pricing. Having to turn a profit might actually force them to /compete/ in the marketplace instead of undermine it.

I think Karl is coming from a good place in trying to speak up for the users and creators of the site, who might get annoyed at having to sit through a sponsored stream or annoyed at having to do them. And that’s fair! We need that kind of advocacy, goodness knows Twitch has issues (low discoverability on the platform, for example). He talks about wanting to keep Twitch from ‘exploiting its creators’ and stop ‘massive layoffs’. That’s great! (You know what might stop massive layoffs? Profits)  But the way to do it is not, in my opinion, to subscribe to flawed business methodologies that result in the consolidation of power in the hands of a few corporations at the expense of users.

Instead.

I think what Karl could focus on is advocating that the creators and those who work at Twitch should see a larger percentage of the profits that the company makes. It might be easier to do a sponsored stream or sit through one when you know Twitch is handing over 70% of the revenue to the creator, or that Twitch is using the revenue to support well paid employees and not lay them off in hard times! I think Twitch could consider including creators in the decision making process of the platform whose influence they help to build. Honestly, I actually think Twitch should even look into whether its business model fundamentally is sound when it can be so easily replicated or poached (*ahem* Kick/YouTube *ahem* Ludwig). These are all tough questions that need to be asked.

But it’ll take time to figure them out. And I think it would be nice if Twitch gets a little bit of our support and patience in addition to our skepticism as they try to figure it out.
