Pov.
Carmen comes home and hears the reader SOBBING, so he worries something terrible happened but it turns out she's just cooking and chopping onions really irritated her eyes.
LMFAOOO this is so silly. Like he’s instantly so concerned that they’re crying he doesn’t even see the onions out on the counter.
“I’m home,” Carmy calls out as he steps through the front door. The Chicago cold has him bundled up in a thick scarf and beanie, both of which he’s tossing onto the foyer table.
“Hey Carmy,” you reply, but the minute he hears you, he knows something’s off. When he sees you walking towards him, his stomach drops.
You’re hastily wiping at your cheeks with the back of your hand. There’s tears all over your face, even more raining down as you walk towards him. You sniffle, and it sounds like your nose is stopped up with snot. It sounds like you’ve been crying really hard.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” He’s immediately at your side, running his thumbs over the tear tracks on your cheeks. When he realizes that isn’t enough, he starts wiping at your face with the end of his sleeve. “What happened?”
“Oh, it’s—it was just—“ You sniffle, your tears stifling you, and Carmy genuinely feels something in his heart crack.
“Did something bad happen? Did someone hurt you?” He’s racking his memories across the past week, searching for something he must have missed. “If someone did anything bad to you, I’ll fucking—“
“Onions,” you blurt out. “It’s just onions, Carm.”
“…Onions?” He pauses wiping at your face, which has now broken into a smile.
“I was just chopping some onions for dinner tonight.” He looks over into the kitchen, and sure enough, there’s diced onions on a cutting board. “That’s all.”
“Oh.” His hands drop to his side. “Sorry, I just thought…”
“Is it bad that I kinda enjoyed that? It was really sweet. I would kiss you, but I have snot all over my face.” You’re running back into the kitchen to grab some tissues to blow your nose. Carmy trails awkwardly behind you.
“It’s been a while since I sharpened your knives. I’ll do it soon, so the onions won’t make you cry as much.”
“You really don’t have to.” You throw a snotty tissue away before grabbing another. “The onions were just particularly sad today. They were telling me the most tragic stories.”
“Well, they shouldn’t be making you cry so much,” he huffs, way too defensive for a joke about some onions, but he revels in the way it makes you laugh.
“They won’t now that you’re around.” You finish wiping your face off. “Wanna help me finish up here? If you’re not too tired, that is.”
“Sure, I’d like that. Just one thing, though.”
You don’t get a chance to ask what it is. He pulls you in for a kiss.
Stupid onions. At least it got Carm to fuss over you.

Present Day: Christmas Eve, 1989.
Eddie. You’re staring at Eddie, that much you know. He’s standing right in front of you, yet it all feels hazy. There’s a ringing in your ears that won’t stop, a sickness in your gut that won’t ease. You say nothing as you step aside to let Dustin and the rest of the kids rush to the door to greet the man before you.
He looks at you, desperately, before being swarmed by everyone else.
“Eddie! Holy shit!!” Dustin yells, throwing his full weight at the man and barely giving him time to get his bearings.
“What are you doing here!?” Lucas asks, pushing Dustin out of the way to get his own hug.
“Slow down, you gremlins,” Eddie laughs. Oh, god, his laugh. It makes your stomach churn. What was once music to your ears is now an unfamiliar sound. You’d know his laugh anywhere. But you don’t feel like you know him anymore. “How’s everyone doing? I missed you fuckers,” he says, ruffling Max’s hair.
“We missed you,” she says, rolling her eyes as if she can’t be bothered. Eddie knows it’s just an act.
You move out of the doorway, feeling like you’re in a daze as you walk back to the living room.
“Did you guys know about this?” you ask Nancy, Robin, and Steve once they turn expectantly to catch your reaction to the whole surprise.
“Yeah, he got in a few days ago. We wanted it to be a surprise,” Robin says, biting her bottom lip in an attempt to cover a smile.
“Right,” you say, not matching her excitement as you sit down in an empty chair. It explains why the girls were acting so weird during your baking session. It explains why you made the stupid raspberry cookies.
You can feel Jonathan’s eyes boring into you, watching your every move. You don’t look at him, knowing you’ll break if you see the concerned expression you know will be on his face. Nancy’s about to say something when Eddie and the teens come swarming in, Dustin already blabbering his ear off. You go stiff in your seat, not meeting those gorgeous brown eyes and instead keeping your face trained on the floor.
Jonathan stands, moving to greet Eddie as he’s the only one who hasn’t yet. “What’s up, man? You back for good?” he asks.
“Yeah. Yeah I think I am,” he says. “It’s good to see you.” You know everyone’s eyes are on you, including his. You know they’re waiting for you to say something. Your silence is ear-splitting, and it feels like a bomb is about to go off.
Everyone moves to surround Eddie, except you, but you can’t blame them. They ask him for all of the details about Chicago, his reasons for moving back, anything and everything. You catch him looking around their faces, trying to get you to look at him, but you avoid his eyes every time. You thought this was what you wanted. You thought seeing him would fix everything.
But it didn’t.
If anything, your heart feels even more shattered. He thinks he can just come home, show up at this party without warning and you’re just going to fall into his arms? Confess your love for him? Act like nothing has happened?
He’s too nonchalant, the way he talks to the group. The way he sits casually on Steve’s sofa, the way he grabs cookies and a drink to indulge in.
A part of you wants to be upset with your friends for hiding this from you, for giving you no warning, but the other part of you knows they were just trying to make you happy. This was supposed to make you happy. You’re unhappy without Eddie, and now he’s here and you’re still unhappy. What is wrong with you?
It’s too much, your head feeling like it’s going to cave in as you listen to the chatter around you. Eddie’s voice is grating in your ears, and you can’t bear to look at his face — you know you’ll just burst into tears. He’s in the middle of telling a story about his attempts to land a recording gig when you stand from your seat, stopping him mid-sentence.
Without a word, you walk quickly to Steve’s back door, letting yourself out to the backyard. You can hear Jonathan call after you, but you don’t want to be bothered. The cold air hits you harder without your coat on, and you wrap your arms around yourself to keep as warm as possible. Steve’s covered pool is coated with a layer of ice and snow, and the lights from inside make the snow sparkle. Inhaling deeply, the icy air burns your lungs, but at least you’re feeling something definite. Your emotions are all over the place, none of them clear or easy to work through.
Maybe you should just go home. Just slink off to your car and go, because you certainly can’t be here with him. As if on cue, sent by some fucked up force in the universe that loves to put you through the wringer, the door slides open.
You hear shoes crunch on the snowy ground, bulky steps that can only come from heavy boots. A deep breath is taken but it’s not enough, you feel like you can’t get any air when he’s taking it all from you. Standing still, you stare straight ahead, your back facing who you know is right behind you. You can’t bear to turn around, to be the one to face him first.
“Sunny,” is all he says. His voice is soft, but it raises every hair on your neck. You’re back to a year ago, to that horrible place he took you to and locked you away in.
You steel yourself, preparing for the floor to fall out beneath you and trying your damndest to be ready for it.
“Please, look at me.”
Turning, slowly, your eyes lock with his. He looks the same as he did the last time you saw him, except now his face fills your mouth with a sour taste. You don’t like this feeling.
“I missed you,” he says, quietly.
His hands are tucked in the front pocket of his jeans, his face barely visible in the dark. He looks at you almost expectantly, like you’re supposed to do something here. Like this isn’t insane.
“I can’t do this, Eddie,” you say, barely above a whisper. Your voice is failing you.
He hears you anyway, his ears so attuned to anything and everything you have to say. You don’t look the same, the usual fire behind your eyes is gone. It worries him.
“Please, just… I came back for you. I’ve never stopped thinking about you.”
“Please don’t. Don’t do that, Eddie,” you warn, tears burning at your eyes.
“Do what? Be honest with you? I’m sorry Sunny. I’m so sorry. But it’s the truth. I’ve never stopped missing you,” he presses. His tone isn’t harsh, but passionate. You know he’s being honest, and it makes you want to throw up.
“So, what? You’re just going to walk in here and act like everything is normal? Like this isn’t fucking weird?” you ask, getting progressively louder as you go. He’s standing not even a foot away, silent. What can he say?
“You’ve been gone for a year, Eddie. You left me, you barely gave me a warning!” you hiss, stepping further away from him. Retreating into yourself, protecting yourself.
He takes a step toward you, chancing it. Reaching a hand out as if to grab you and comfort you. You don’t let him, slinking out of his touch.
“Sunny, please. Can we talk about this?” he asks, his voice desperate as he pleads with you.
“You didn’t want to talk it over when you made the decision to leave,” you spit. “So maybe I don’t want to talk things over now. I’m sorry you thought I’d just fall right into your arms again, but it’s not happening, Eddie. This? Whatever it is we had? It’s done, it’s gone. You can thank yourself.” You brush past him, slamming the door shut behind you once you’ve entered the house again. Anger and hurt blaze through your veins in a deadly concoction, your vision blurry with the hot tears that sting in your eyes.
Eddie follows after you, hot on your trail, emotion-strained voice calling out from behind. “Sunny. Sunny!”
You don’t give him the satisfaction of a response, simply putting your coat on and grabbing your purse. “I’m leaving. I’m sorry, everyone,” you say curtly, and then you’re heading towards the front door, stepping outside into the cold night with nothing more than the slam of the wood.
Eddie stands in the living room, forlorn as everyone just looks around, unsure of what to do. Of all the ways this reunion could have gone, they certainly didn’t expect this. They thought it would make you happy, not make everything worse.
“I have to go get her—” he starts, frantic as he pats down his pockets for his car keys.
“Eddie, I don’t think that’s the best idea,” Robin says warily, standing from her seat on the couch.
“I let her go once!” Eddie yells, a painful twinge to his tone. “I can’t let it happen again.”
He looks like a kicked puppy, scared where he stands in the middle of Steve’s home. The looks everyone gives him are pitying, and it makes him scoff as he starts to pace, running his hands through his hair.
“You need to give her space, man,” Jonathan adds, trying to calm him down. “If you bombard her right now, it’ll only make her more upset.”
Eddie looks at him, saying nothing. His eyes are glassy, tears threatening to spill but he doesn’t want to let them. The impulsive part of him wants to tell Jonathan to fuck off — he used to know you like that. He used to be the person that knew everything about you, and now Jonathan has taken his place. Even if only platonically. He bites his tongue, reminding himself of the unfortunate truth that it’s his own fault you aren’t close anymore.
“I— I just need some air,” Eddie settles on, turning around and going back out to the backyard.
He isn’t out there for long before he hears someone else join him. Turning, he’s a little surprised to see Jonathan. He’d expected Steve, maybe Dustin.
“Hey,” Eddie says, his hands in his pockets as he stares out across the yard.
“Hey,” Jonathan replies, taking slow steps closer to him. “Listen, Eddie,” he starts after a pause. “You put her through a lot this last year,” he says. Eddie can tell by his tone he’s not trying to be unkind or sour, but it still hurts. It’s hard to admit that he was so incredibly wrong, and that his actions are having major consequences. He never wanted to hurt you this badly. Everything had spun out of control, and he’s to blame.
“I know, man. I know,” he replies. “I’m sorry about it.”
Jonathan just looks at him, watching him carefully. There’s a brief silence, before Eddie takes a deep breath and a little leap of faith.
“Can you talk to her for me?”
He looks at the man beside him, breath hitched in his throat, nervous.
“Eddie—”
“Please, man. She… she trusts you. In a way that she doesn’t trust me anymore. And I know that that’s my fault, but…” he takes a shaky breath, furiously swiping at his wet eyes with his thumb. “I want to earn her trust back. I want her back.”
Jonathan thinks this over, running his tongue over his teeth behind his top lip as if collecting the taste Eddie’s words leave in his mouth. Meeting Eddie’s eyes, his gaze softens when he sees the pain sitting on his face.
“Okay. I’ll try to talk to her,” Jonathan says finally, and Eddie lets out a relieved breath. “But. I’m not promising anything. If she wants to cut ties with you, that’s her business, and I can’t force her to do anything. You screwed up last year, Ed. I’m not trying to rub salt in your wounds, I just need you to understand why this is so hard for her.”
Eddie almost wants to laugh. Jonathan has a way of saying harsh things — of giving you the truth — yet not making you feel like complete shit while he does it. Eddie knows that he cares, he just cares on a level that not everyone does.
“I know. Trust me, I know that,” he sighs, blowing out a puff of air as he looks up to the dark sky. “I know you can’t force her, and I don’t want that. I just… I want her to know how sorry I am. If nothing else, I want her to know that she’s the most important person I’ve ever met and that I’m a moron for what I did last year.”
Jonathan does laugh at this, and then Eddie starts laughing with him. And it feels good, if even for a fleeting moment.
“I’ll talk to her, okay? I’m glad to have you back, man,” the younger man says, giving Eddie a soft fist to the shoulder. There’s a smile on his face, just enough for Eddie to notice.
He smiles back. Jonathan doesn’t need words to hear the ‘thank you’ that lies behind it.
You don’t feel any better after your outburst towards Eddie. You wanted to be with your friends tonight, not sitting alone at your apartment. But you’d left on impulse and now… here you are. Sitting alone on your floor because it felt right to sit on the floor and now you’re spiraling.
You don’t know what to think, or what to feel. You’d been sad for months over Eddie’s absence and now he’s here and you go and have a meltdown. Frustration boils inside of you, your heart twisting in your chest. Being angry at Eddie doesn’t feel any better than missing him had, it’s not like being mad allows you to just forget him.
Before you can think yourself into oblivion, your phone rings. Groaning, you stand to retrieve it. Your heart pounds in your chest — what if it’s him?
Steadying your breathing, you let it ring a few times before you convince yourself to answer.
“Hello?” you mumble, not quite ready to find out whose voice will come out on the other end.
“Sunny. It’s me,” Jonathan’s voice comes through the receiver, relaxing every muscle in your body. “Are you okay?” he asks.
“Honestly, Jon? I have no fucking idea,” you say, with a slight laugh at the end. There’s no humor in it, though, you simply feel like you’re going mad.
“Can I come over?”
“Jonathan, no, stay at the party—”
“Sunny. Can I come over?” he tries again, not wanting you to put him first in this situation. He wants to be there for you.
“Okay. Yeah, fine. Door’s unlocked, just come in when you get here.”
Clicking the phone back into its place, you pace the floor slightly, chewing your nail.
Did Eddie really come back for you? Is this all for you?
Your heart aches at the thought of it. You just don’t understand how he expected everything to be just fine the second you saw him, and all you can picture in your mind is the look on his stupid fucking face the second you opened Steve’s door.
He looked at you like you hung the moon. He looked at you like you were everything.
You think about last year, you think about the kiss. The way his lips felt so soft against yours, like they were made to be there. You dig the heels of your palms into your eyes, rubbing at them with a frustrated sigh. Taking a seat on the couch, you await Jonathan’s arrival.
The door opens quietly before his figure slips through the gap, his cheeks rosy from the cold. You’re curled in one corner of the sofa, and you must look pitiful because his eyes soften the second they land on you.
“Sunny…” he says, hanging his coat on your coat rack before instantly coming to sit by you.
“What the fuck is happening, Jonathan?” you croak, moving to lean against him. “I thought this was what I wanted. I wanted him to come home I… I still miss him…”
“I think he just surprised you. You’re feeling a lot of things at once, and that’s okay. Every single emotion is valid,” he says softly, rubbing your back with a gentle hand.
“I’m just so mad that he walked in like it was nothing. He sat down and talked with everyone like there wasn’t a giant elephant in the room to address,” you say, that anger still lingering in your voice. “But I’m not proud that I walked out on him. I didn’t let him talk, or anything. I told him we’re done,” you sniff, letting tears drip down your face. “I don’t know if I really meant that.”
“Do you think he’s just gonna give up on you? I promise you he’s not, Sunny. He was ready to chase after you the second you left.”
You think this over, a pang in your heart making you cry more. A small part of you wanted him to chase you, although you wouldn’t admit it in your anger.
“He’s really sorry, Sunny,” Jonathan sighs, squeezing you closer to him. “I’ve never seen him this beat up over anything. He’s devastated. You have a right to be devastated, too. I just want you to know that he knows he screwed up.”
“Did he tell you to tell me this?”
Jonathan pauses, takes a breath. “He asked if I would talk to you, yeah. But I had every intention of coming over here, anyway. I think you need someone to talk it out with, that isn’t him.”
“Is that all he said?”
“He said he’s a moron for what he did,” Jonathan adds, smiling when he gets a watery laugh from you.
“He is a fucking moron,” you admit, wiping your nose with the back of your hand.
“And he said that you’re the most important person he’s ever met. There’s no doubt in my mind that he means that. He really adores you, Sunny.”
“I feel the same about him,” you say, lip wobbling. It’s true. You’ve never met anyone else who’s impacted you quite the same as he has. He’s everything. That’s why this is all so earth-shattering.
“So what are you gonna do?” Jonathan asks, waiting a beat. “You don’t have to decide now. I’m not here to change your mind or tell you how to feel. You don’t have to talk to him anymore if you really don’t want to. But I saw how happy you were with him last year, Sunny. I want you to be that happy again.”
“I need to think things over,” you say meekly, letting out a sigh. “Can we just watch a movie?” you ask, looking up at your friend.
“Yeah,” he chuckles. “We can watch a movie. Give yourself all the time you need to think.”
Present Day: Christmas Day, 1989.
The night had been a restless one. Tossing and turning beneath your heavy comforter, your mind racing with a million thoughts. A million things you want to say, a million things you should say, to him. He hurt you, and he can’t take that back, but you didn’t even hear a single thing he had to say. You didn’t hear him out, and that’s not how you’d typically behave around him. Maybe nothing involving him was “typical” anymore, but you couldn’t sleep restfully knowing you haven’t had a real conversation with him.
All you’d wanted, for 12 months, was for Eddie to be home, to apologize. You realize now that your anger has eased that you need to talk to him. Nothing will improve if you don’t speak to him. You know for a fact it would eat you alive every day if he was home in Hawkins, seeing your friends, and you had to avoid him. You have things you need to get off your chest, stuff you want to say, and as you laid awake blinking into the darkness, you’d decided you needed to go and see him.
Christmas morning arrives too bright and too early, your body curled beneath blankets as you rub your eyes and yawn. It feels like you fell asleep for maybe an hour or two, your mind still racing with thoughts that seemed to never stop. Immediately, you’re throwing the covers off and getting out of bed.
There’s still time to fix things. There’s still time to talk to him, to have a good Christmas. You deserve a good Christmas.
The shower water pours hot out of the faucet, steam filling your bathroom as you undress. You let the water coat your skin, making you feel more awake as you shampoo your hair and scrub your body. You feel like you can’t move fast enough, anxiety swirling in your stomach coupled with your eager need to see Eddie.
You get ready in record timing, hair done and outfit donned, teeth brushed and everything else in between. You bundle up for the weather, as one look out your window told you it was definitely a cold one, a hefty layer of snow coating the ground. You can feel yourself tremble as you get in your car and start it, nausea creeping back in as you worry the whole drive to Eddie’s.
Your boots crunch on the snow-covered dirt, your hand pushing your car door shut with a reluctant creak. It’s been so long since you’ve been here, at the trailer park, standing in front of this very trailer. It looks the same as you remember it, though it looks like Wayne got a new wreath for the door.
It’s early, god you know it’s so early, and you only hope you won’t be disturbing the sleep of the two men who inhabit the home. But this is important, you think to yourself. You have to do this.
Taking a deep breath, your hand trembles before you bring it to the door in a repetitive pattern, knocking firmly. There’s no answer for a moment, and you worry that maybe coming out here was a mistake. Maybe he doesn’t want to talk to you, after all. Maybe Jonathan was wrong, and you’d pissed him off, and he’s done with you.
Maybe it’s too late.
You’re about to resign, to get back in your car, when you hear footsteps on the inside of the door. It swings open in front of you, revealing Eddie’s sleepy face and his sleep-tousled hair.
“Sunny?” he asks, rubbing one eye with his hand. He reaches off to the side, yanking on a coat before coming to stand outside with you.
“Sorry, uh… Wayne’s still asleep otherwise I’d—”
“I miss you, Eddie,” you cut him off, making his eyes widen for a split second. “And I’m so fucking mad at you, but it turns out being mad at you doesn’t make me miss you any less.”
He blinks, looking down at you but not speaking, as if he’s too scared to say anything at all.
“You really fucked me up leaving last year, you know that?” you ask with an icy laugh, looking off to the side. “I missed you every single day you were gone. All I wanted this whole time was you. And now you’re here, and— and, you think you can just show up and everything will be fine. Everything’s not fine,” you ramble, voice cracking at the end of your speech.
You’d tried to ward off any tears, but they’re running warm down your cold cheeks before you can stop them. You wipe furiously at them with your fingers, trying to hide your emotions from the man in front of you. You hadn’t planned on getting this emotional, but then you suppose you can’t really fully plan for a conversation like this.
“Nothing— is fine, Eddie,” you croak. “I missed you so much,” you start to cry harder, collapsing against him as he readily accepts you into a sort of hug as you let it all pour out of you. He holds you against his chest, and how you missed being pressed close to him like this. Your chest aches with every single second of those 12 months without him that you can’t get back. “How could you do that to me?” you ask him, fist clutching the fabric of his coat, not wanting to let him go.
He squeezes you so tight, he doesn’t know what to say. He didn’t expect you to come here, especially not so soon.
“I’m so sorry, Sunny,” he says quietly. “I’m so sorry. I’m the dumbest man alive for leaving you. I really am.”
“At least you know that,” you sniff, the tiniest laugh rumbling in your chest amidst your tears; reminding you of what Jonathan had told you the night before. That he’s a moron.
“I’ll let you tell me that every day for the rest of my life,” he says, brave enough to crack the smallest smile. “Just please don’t give up on me.” Gripping your shoulders, he coaxes you just far enough away so he can really look at you. “All I want is you, Sunny. Chicago… didn’t change my life. Not in the slightest. I thought I needed to get out of here but… I couldn’t have been more wrong. And I’m so sorry you had to be caught up in my dumb mistake,” he says earnestly. “It was never a problem with you. My feelings for you were always real. Are still real.
You’re silent, taking a couple breaths before you speak. “I’m sorry Chicago didn’t work out. But the selfish part of me was hoping it wouldn’t…” you confess, looking down at your shoes.
“It’s okay. I learned my lesson, that’s for sure,” he scoffs a little, his expression downtrodden.
“This year was so hard, Eddie,” you tell him. “Nothing has been the same without you.” The pain in your voice feels like he’s been stabbed in the heart, and he so horribly wishes he could take everything back. But he can’t. All he can do is be better for you, now.
“I know, sweetheart,” he says, his big chocolate eyes so apologetic. You missed his pet names, missed the way sweetheart rolls off of his tongue specially for you. “Please tell me you didn’t mean what you said… when you said that we’re done.”
He doesn’t look at you as he says that last part, not the entire time at least. His eyes dance nervously around, his voice wavering with anxiety. It makes tears spring to your eyes again, the thought of going on without him. Of spending every day for the rest of your life without him.
“I can’t do this without you, Eddie,” you say. “But you have to promise me you’re never going to pull something like that again. You’re never leaving again, unless it’s with me,” you steel yourself, not letting yourself get too emotional until he can make this promise. Until he can prove himself.
“Never. Never, I swear. I don’t want to be anywhere you aren’t,” he breathes, moving closer to you. “Please let me make it all up to you. I’ll spend the rest of my life being the best I can be for you.”
His hands cup your face, warm against your frosty cheeks. He wipes a stray tear from your face with a gentle thumb, smiling so softly when you lean into his touch. All at once it hits you, your overwhelming affection for him that you’d had to shove down all year. It gnaws at your chest, clawing its way out of you triumphantly. He’s still the same man you knew then. He’s still the only person you want first thing in the morning and last thing at night.
“Eddie…” you sigh, letting your eyes flutter closed, your hands holding his forearms.
You can feel how close his face is to yours, his nose nearly ghosting over your own and his breath warming your skin. The broken pieces of you are being glued back together one by one the longer he stands holding you.
“I’ve thought about that kiss every single day for the last year, you know that?” he says softly, your eyes opening once more to look up at him.
“Me too,” you breathe. “I’d started to think that maybe it was a mistake,” you admit sadly, watching the way his expression changes. “But it was the best kiss I’ve ever had.”
Both of you go quiet, eyes saying so much without words as you look at each other. He’s so close, his face right against yours as you stand in the freezing cold morning. He starts to shift even closer, and you feel like his lips are about to close the distance to yours when the trailer door swings open.
“Is that my little lady?” Wayne’s gruff voice calls out.
You and Eddie break apart abruptly, Eddie rather reluctantly letting you go as your head swings to look at his uncle.
“Wayne!” you beam, moving instantly to accept his hug. You glance back at Eddie, heart thumping in your chest as you watch him watching you.
This is how it should be. This is how you always want it to be.
“Get in here and out of the cold. I missed you, you know that?” the older man says to you, pulling you inside.
You have a lot of catching up to do. That second kiss will have to wait.
After a mug of hot cocoa and a lot of reminiscing with Wayne and Eddie, you find yourself alone with Eddie in his room. There’s a tiny bit of awkwardness in the atmosphere, both of you getting your footing together after so much time apart. It almost feels wrong to be in his bedroom, but then you remember you spent nearly every day here not so long ago.
“I’m sorry it’s a mess,” he smiles weakly. “Unpacking hasn’t exactly been my top priority.”
“Don’t apologize,” you insist, standing in the doorway as he kicks his messy suitcase to a corner of the room. “Was it ever clean before you moved?” you tease, more and more of that weight being lifted off your shoulders with each lighthearted comment, each joke and laugh and smile given and received.
“Sometimes!” he defends, immediately relenting. “Okay, no, it’s always a mess.”
“I really need to get going, Eddie. I need to see my parents at least for a little bit today,” you tell him, glancing at the clock.
“Will I see you back at Steve’s later?” he asks.
“I was hoping I could hitch a ride with you,” you say shyly.
He beams, pearly white teeth shining at you. He could light the entire city with that smile.
“Of course you can. I’ll pick you up, say around six?”
“Six is perfect,” you smile, moving toward him to give his arm a squeeze. “I really fucking missed you.”
He exhales, taking both of your hands in his. “I missed you more than I can even say. I hope you believe me. If I could take this whole year back, start over, I would.”
You don’t reply, just nod at him with empathetic eyes. You know he means it. You do believe him.
“I’ll see you later, okay?”
“Okay,” he says. “Be safe getting to your parents, alright?”
You nod again, smiling at him before you put your coat back on, saying goodbye to Wayne and walking out into the cold.
Opening gifts with your parents was a good reprieve from the emotional whirlwind of a morning that you’d had, simply sharing in their joy and having lighthearted conversation. It felt good to feel good, that was for certain.
To have a happy Christmas, a happy day, finally. There was still much to be discussed with Eddie, but you felt at ease now that you’d finally poured your heart out to him. You can’t really stay angry with him, because your heart knows he never meant to cause you so much pain.
Six o’clock rolls around surprisingly quickly, a knock sounding at your door as you give yourself a once over in your mirror. Smoothing down your velvet skirt for a final time, you turn to leave your room. As you’re about to flip off the light, though, your jewelry box catches your eye.
You walk over to your dresser where it sits on the top, opening the lid. Eddie’s necklace sits with its broken chain on top of the other miscellaneous jewelry, the initialed pendant gleaming right at you. There’s another knock on your door, and you hurriedly rummage through the clutter to find a spare chain, one that hadn’t been ripped in half.
You let the pendant fall from the old chain, slipping it onto the new one as you walk quickly to the door.
Swinging it open, Eddie’s sweet face greets you on the other side. The things you would’ve given to see him greeting you all those torturous months when he was gone. And now he’s here. He looks gorgeous; wearing what might be his only pair of black jeans that aren’t ripped, along with a deep green flannel that slightly pokes out beneath a dark gray sweater. You want to devour him, you realize. But that will have to wait — the time will come eventually.
“Oh, thank god. I was starting to think you weren’t gonna answer,” he jokes, playing off the comment with a slight laugh. You can see in his face that a small part of him really was concerned you’d bail.
“Sorry, I was looking for something,” you say, stepping aside to let him in.
“Oh? Did you find whatever it was?”
“Mhm. Would you mind putting it on me?” you ask, holding out the necklace to him.
He looks at it, his eyes softening when he recognizes the pendant.
“You still have this,” he muses, surprise evident in his tone. Like he thought you’d get rid of it. You truthfully never could have.
“It’s important to me,” you tell him, glancing up at him through your lashes. “I… broke the original chain. One night when I took it off. I-I’m not proud of it and I’m sorry. Because this gift is so important to me. It was the only piece I had of you,” you admit, pouring your truth and your heart into his open hands.
“Sunny, you don’t have to apologize. You still have it, I’m so glad you do.”
He smiles, a warm and wonderful thing, before he motions for you to turn around. He drapes the pendant over your head, letting it rest on your chest while he fidgets with the clasp at the back. You nearly want to cry as he puts it on you; you didn’t get the chance for him to do this when he’d gifted it to you. You’d put it on alone, in painful tears, wishing it would bring him back.
“Okay, I think it’s good,” Eddie murmurs, his gaze soft when you turn back around to face him.
“What do you think?” you ask, biting on your lip.
“It’s a beautiful necklace for an even more beautiful person,” he says, calm and collected, his words steady and meaningful. “I’m just sorry it took me this long to see you wearing it.”
You feel your cheeks flush, smiling as you pull your coat on and grab hold of the bottle of wine you’d bought to bring to Steve’s.
“Ready?” you ask, shy beneath the way he stares at you; like he never wants to look at anything but you.
“You know it,” he says, jingling his car keys before opening the door for you.
Your foot taps nervously on the floor of the car the whole ride to Steve’s home, butterflies twirling in your stomach at the thought of your arrival with Eddie. After your outburst yesterday, you were admittedly a little embarrassed, and now to show up with the man you’d just walked out on… well, what a roller coaster. Tension hangs thick between the two of you, the mutual acknowledgment of what maybe almost happened earlier before Wayne had interrupted blinking like a neon sign. He had definitely almost kissed you, and the thought makes your stomach swirl.
Neither of you really talk much, not knowing what to say. Sitting in silence and enjoying the company of the other feels like enough, for now. You can’t help but smile to yourself as you look at the pretty decorated houses that you pass, heart soaring with the knowledge that you have Eddie back, and with it comes the holiday cheer you’d been missing.
Before long the clunky van is pulling into Steve’s driveway, parking behind Nancy’s car. Eddie kills the engine, telling you to stay put so he can jog around to your side and get the door for you. He extends a hand, helping you down into the slippery concrete as you clutch the wine bottle tight in your other hand.
“Why thank you,” you giggle, not missing the way his cheeks grow pink.
“Anything for you, m’lady,” he salutes, reaching in behind you to grab your purse for you.
You take a deep breath as you start to walk up to the front door, arm tangled with Eddie’s so you don’t slip and in the slushy mess. You can sense his nerves, too, as he knocks on the door. You glance to the side, smiling at him and watching him return the gesture.
Steve opens the door, wearing reindeer antlers and a red Christmas sweater. He stops in his tracks when he sees both of you, a smug grin spreading on his lips.
“Well, would you look at that?” he says, crossing his arms over his chest. “I missed seeing you two attached at the hip,” he jokes, stepping aside to let you both in.
“Yeah, yeah,” Eddie says, squeezing the other man’s shoulder. What you don’t see is the way Steve gives him a celebratory fist bump, mouthing a silent “yes!”.
Heads turn the second you and Eddie are inside, and you watch as Nancy and Robin beam at the sight. Jonathan gives you both a pointed but subtle thumbs up, and his smile says it all.
“Look at you two!” Robin exclaims, and you unravel your arm from Eddie’s to give her a hug.
“Okay, guys, we’re the spectacle of the evening, we get it,” Eddie laughs, giving her a hug after you.
“I won’t lie, I missed seeing you two arriving places together. You used to basically be conjoined,” Nancy jokes, taking the wine from you. She moves swiftly into the kitchen, getting out a few glasses to pour some. She hands you a glass, along with one for herself and Robin.
“Wait, hey, let me catch up!” Eddie says, grabbing a beer for himself from the fridge.
Steve and Jonathan gather around with their drinks, too, everyone raising their glasses and bottles high.
“Cheers, to Sunny and Eddie,” Nancy says, smiling brightly as everyone clinks their drinks together before taking a sip. Her toast makes you flustered, heart beating rapidly in your chest.
The wine goes down easy, warming your stomach with a pleasant tingle. This is how things should be. The hole in your friend group filled by the person you’d all been missing. The energy in the room is brighter, better. Eddie is needed here, not only by you.
Robin puts on one of Steve’s many Christmas records, letting the music fill the room along with your blended voices chattering happily. You’re talking with the girls, filling them in on what happened since last night. Your eyes keep wandering to wherever Eddie is, noticing him standing in the sun room with Steve. They’re talking about something you can’t hear, looking out the window into the snow covered backyard. You start to walk towards him, telling the girls you’ll be back in a bit, but stop at Jonathan first where he sits on the couch.
“Thank you. For helping me sort through my feelings,” you tell him, giving his hand a squeeze.
“I hardly did anything. You made this choice yourself,” he says, squeezing your hand right back. “I’m so happy for you, Sunny. It’s good to see you happy.”
“You’re the best, you know that?” you ask him, giving him one last grateful look before walking away.
“Gentlemen,” you say, announcing yourself as you step into the other room with the two men. You hope you aren’t interrupting anything too important, but staying away from Eddie is the last thing you want right now.
“There she is,” Steve says, pulling you into his side. You laugh, reaching a hand up to mess up his hair.
“Hey, hey— watch the antlers!” he defends, slipping out of reach.
“Do you mind if I have a minute alone with him?” you ask Steve, motioning to Eddie with your thumb.
“No, no. Of course not. Behave yourselves,” he winks, slipping out as he takes a sip of his beer.
“What’s up, sweetheart?” Eddie asks, moving in on you, wrapping an arm tentatively around your waist. His expression eases up when you relax into his touch, smiling blissfully up at him.
“I just thought we should pick up where we left off earlier…” you say, poking his chest softly with a finger and letting it trail down.
“Oh? And where exactly did we leave off?” he smirks, pressing his body closer to yours.
“I think… that you were about to kiss me again,” you murmur, hooded eyes looking up into his.
“Interesting theory,” Eddie jokes, placing a hand to his chin as if pondering this. You slap him lightly on the arm, giggling like a schoolgirl at him. “You might be right about that, sweetness,” he admits, dropping his face down closer to yours.
Your noses brush, the smell of his cologne and shampoo overwhelming your senses. He still uses the same stuff he did a year ago, turns out.
Your eyes focus in on his soft lips, the way his tongue darts out to wet them slightly. And then you let your eyelids flutter closed, feeling his other arm wrap around you, pulling you impossibly closer. His lips press to yours, so soft and hesitant at first, before gaining more confidence. You hold the back of his neck with one hand, fingers tangling in his curls, taking in his warmth and softness. Your mouths move together perfectly, two pieces of a puzzle finally brought together. The same fireworks you felt that first time go off again, yet this time they somehow feel even brighter. You’d waited so long for this, wondered if you would ever get this, and now it’s happening.
His tongue prods gently into your mouth, ever so slightly dancing around yours. His lips are so plush and gentle, and he smiles into the kiss with a soft little laugh. Pulling away, he rests his forehead to yours.
“You can tell me I’m crazy for this if you want to, okay? If it’s too soon, I get it. But I have to know if you’ll be mine,” he says, eyes darting back and forth between each of your own.
“Eddie,” you breathe, smiling wider than you have all night. “I’m all yours. I’ll be yours forever,” you promise, wrapping both arms around his neck and pulling him into one more passionate kiss.
“Okay, lovebirds!” Robin calls from the living room. You both turn your heads to see everyone watching you, and your cheeks flush.
“Didn’t know we had an audience,” Eddie says softly, only for you to hear, making you laugh again.
“Are you guys coming out to make a snowman with us, or what?” Steve asks, hands on his hips as he waits.
“Yeah, yeah, we’ll be right there!” Eddie calls back. “We’re just making up for lost time,” he adds, winking at you before planting a wet, sloppy kiss to your cheek.
You feel whole in this moment, with Eddie’s arm around your waist. What you thought would be a horrible Christmas turned out to be the brightest one, and having Eddie home is the best gift you could’ve asked for; even if it was a rocky start. He’s yours, and you’re his. This is the way it should always be, you’re undoubtedly certain of that now.
“Let’s go, sweetheart,” he says. “Forever starts right now.”

The year 1991 was not Eddie’s year at all, a fact only further proven true by the New Year’s Eve celebration at the Buckley-Harrington’s. It’s a cozy apartment, all things considered, in downtown Chicago, in a neighborhood that would make Mama Harrington probably clutch her pearls at. Steve and Robin love it, though, which, by proxy, means Eddie loves it, too.
Not now, however. Not as he has to watch Harrington with a boy of his, standing so close that the walls around Eddie seem to cave in on him. The secret smiles, the hands on the elbow, the hip – it’s too much.
When Eddie slinks off onto the balcony, it’s when everyone is too drunk too notice.
“Eddie, hey.”
Well. Almost everyone.
“Steve. What brings you here?”
Harrington looks at him funny. Tilts his head to the side like a fucking Golden Retriever. “I live here, Munson, last time I checked.”
Eddie snorts and fishes out a pack of smokes, offering one to Steve. He declines, of course, because the wrath of Robin Buckley is not something Harrington is willing to evoke even after all these years.
“Are you okay?” Steve asks after a moment. His nose wrinkles at the smell. Or maybe at his choice of words.
“The party’s great, don’t you worry your pretty head.”
“Not what I asked,” Steve frowns, or so Eddie assumes since he’s not willing to check. One look at Steve and Eddie will surely crumble. There’s something about New Year’s Eve that makes people wonder.
“Remember,” Eddie starts but cuts himself off to take a long drag off his cigarette.
A pause. Rewind. Try again.
“Remember when you told me that if a guy swept you off your feet,” Eddie munches on his bottom lip. “You’d consider it.”
“Eddie-“
“And I was a fool that thought that maybe I could be that guy.”
Eddie remembers. It would be impossible not to when it’s been burned into his mind ever since.
I’m sorry, Steve will say. I don’t feel about you that way. And Eddie will have to grit his teeth through it and nod and smile. Hope they can still be friends at the end of the day.
“I didn’t know that was an option,” says a quiet voice to his left.
“What?”
This time Eddie does turn his head and Steve’s there, eyes on the ground. Eddie balks. “But you-“
“You said ‘good luck’,” Steve snaps his head back up. “And shut down on me. How was I supposed to know that you-“
“How could I not?” Eddie throws back. “You’re easy to love.”
Steve pauses. “Love?”
“Yeah,” Eddie slumps against the wall. “Love.”
Warm fingers intertwine with his. “Let me love you, too.”

HEAR ME OUT jock/bully!schlatt x nerd!reader 🤭
The way your brain works? Literal chefs kiss. I have a part two in the works that adds a bit but I didn’t want this to be too long. Let me know if you want the part about the game, and maybe some,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, other things :)
Part One > Part Two > Part Three
Tumblr media
He is so mean.
You watch him laugh in the middle of the student center with other members of his baseball team. Knowing Schlatt, he was probably bragging about a girl that was fawning over him like everyone seemed to do. You pretend not to understand why girls seem to throw themselves at him but his toned legs, tanned skin, and big stature that followed being a student athlete solved the mystery rather quickly. But he is so mean.
Last semester when you were forced by your computer science professor to sit next to Schlatt, he used every chance to prove that. From constantly berating your programming work, making fun of you for minor missed calculations, to making you feel stupid for just not understanding some of the material. You were thankful that the class was finally over when December came around, hoping that you would never be subjected to that again.
Then January came and so did your American History course. When you walked through the classroom doors you almost turned right back around when you saw him already lounging at one of the tables. Legs wide and his arms back behind his head. Instead, you only cursed and sat at a table away from him. He smirked and moved to your table.
“Aw y/n, how come you didn’t sit next to me this time?” He asked. You only glared at him and pulled out your notebook and laptop. Hopeful that your silence would make him move, but he stayed right next to you. The first week of that class passed by the same way as last semesters did. Schlatt insulting you or taking your notebook when you weren't looking. When the first test came around Schlatt taunted you.
“Careful that you don’t fail this one too, we both know your testing average.” Schlatt smirked to himself as he saw you take a steadying breath.
The next class meeting the professor passed the tests back out. You beamed as you saw the 97 in red ink at the top of the paper, but you also saw the 53 at the top of Schlatt’s. You did your best not to smirk, good riddance, you thought to your self.
Weeks passed just like that, Schlatt making passes at your intelligence. Yet, each week you watched as his grades stayed around the 50-70 percent mark. The scores only dropped lower once baseball started, and so did his comments about your intelligence. Instead his comments focused on things that were harder to just ignore.
The professor was talking about Chicago’s ugly law in 1881 and Schlatt smirked and leaned over to you.
“Looks like you wouldn’t have been able to leave the house in Chicago.” You felt your stomach twist. You were used to his comments but that one just hit harder than you were expecting. Nodding you felt tears in your eyes as you just focused back on the board in front of you. “Oh come on,” He poked your side and slowly his smirk shrank as he realized you weren’t backing down this time.
As class was dismissed the professor called for both you and Schlatt to stay. You half wanted Schlatt to be chewed out because she had heard his comment to you, the other half just wanted to forget that it ever happened.
“I asked the both of you to stay because I got this email this morning.” She pulled up an email to the big screen from Schlatt’s baseball coach. You didn’t read the whole thing but one point did stick out. If he can’t pass, he can’t play. Schlatt tensed up as he also read that part of the email.
“Professor-” “Mr. Schlatt please let me.” The professor turned off the board and looked at the both of you. “I hoped that you sitting next to y/n would remedy your grade in my class, but it has not.” The professor took a breath. “I cannot offer too much extra credit as I have more then enough to grade now, but I will offer one project grade and advise to study and do my work.”
Schlatt takes a deep breath and thanks the professor. You shifted in your seat nervous and confused as to why you were here. “Y/n, I wanted you here because you are my best student, I was hoping that you would be willing to form a study group or help Mr. Schlatt.” You begin to shake your head, his previous words echoing in your head. “If you do more than five hours of it, I will exempt you from the final, if you wish.” It’s your turn to take a deep breath. You look towards Schlatt but he was already looking at you, some kind of pleading look in his eye, so you agree.
The professor thanks and dismisses the both of you. The second he can Schlatt is up and out of his chair moving towards the door.
“I have an hour before practice every day, at three. I’ll be in the library.” Then he leaves.
The rest of that day goes by in a blur, the next time your brain kicks back in you're walking into the library. You see Schlatt already sitting at a table with his laptop out.
You slide into the seat across from him and he looks up at you. You pull out your own laptop and pull up your notes for the class.
“Did the professor let you know about that project?” Schlatt nodds and turns his screen to you.
It’s a minor presentation and paper about how a topic of his choice has made a lasting  impression on american culture. You nodd as you process the information.
“No -I don't have any ideas yet.”
“Okay,” you both sit in silence for a minute. The project was due before the final, so Schlatt had a good month to work on it. “We have a test on Friday, do you want to work on that some?” Schlatt only shrugs and you slowly start.
“Why is, what do, why-” You struggled asking. He smirked at your struggle before remembering he was using his mean face right now. “Why do you think you are struggling so much?” You whisper. Schlatt straightens in his seat.
“I just forget what we learn in class,” He clears his throat. “I zone out a lot.”
You smile to yourself, “Baseball that mind consuming?” He stares at you and thinks about your words before chuckling lightly.
“Yeah, something like that.”
The tension between you two lightens after that. You walk him through todays lesson. And work backwards. About 45 minutes later your phone starts buzzing with a silent alarm. Schlatt chuckles.
“So eager to get rid of me you set a timer,  impressive.” You smiled but shook your head.
“No, I know the field is a good five minute walk so I wanted to make sure you had enough time, I don’t know how harsh your coach is.” He seems taken aback by the fact. He smiles lightly and packs his things. You just watch him. Watching has his biceps move and how his muscles shift as his moves.
“Here,” He reaches out towards you with twenty dollar bill. You watch him confused.
“I don’t want that.”
“And I don’t care, dumbass take it.” You only shake your head and begin to pack up your things. He sighs. “Fine, I’ll see you tomorrow, idiot.”
The next few days pass like that. You meet at the library at three, the both of you study and work on his project.
“Are you ready for the test tomorrow?” You ask him as he starts packing up for practice. He nods.
“The professor is going to make my grade viewable right away so I know.” Schlatt looks nervous. “I really hope I do well, I love playing, I want to play.” You stand up with him and touch his arm.
“I believe in you man, you got this!” He stares at the hand on his arm for a second, hesitating before brushing it off him. He flashes you a smile.
“Well if I don’t, we know who to blame, yeah?” Schlatt patts your head before moving around you and leaving the library.
The test was easy to you. Studying with Schlatt keeping you extra prepared with the information. You leave as you finish the test, casting Schlatt a confident glance as you leave. A silent, you got this, that you hope he hears.
As you exist the classroom you look at the benches lining the wall outside the classroom, and you decide to wait for Schlatt.
He finally exits the classroom and you stand instantly. He spots you just as quickly.
“You didn't leave?”
“No, I wanted to check in with you when you finished.” Schlatt smirks at your confession.
“Well,” he says letting the anticipation build. “I got a 95!”
“Hell yeah,” you yell. “That means you can play right?” Schlatt nods. “At least tomorrow.” You beam at him, happy that the time has been paying off. “Speaking of," He stops for a second. "Do you want to come watch tomorrow?”
His question catches you off guard. He went from barely putting up with you to asking you to see him play within a week? Schlatt sees the hesitation on your face and retreads. “You don’t have to it’s okay-” “I’d love to,” You interrupt. “When is it?” Schlatt’s smile is blinding.
“It starts at four,” He takes his backpack off and reaches for something. “Take this and wear it. I’ll let the ticket people know your name that way you get into the,” he hesitates slightly. “The team’s section right near the dugout.” You take the shirt he hands you. “I have class but, I’ll see you tomorrow yeah?” You nod and clutch the shirt to your chest. Schlatt smiles again before leaving the building. You look down at the shirt he gave you. The schools baseball jersey. You flip it over curiously and across the back is Schlatt and a big 14, which you only assume is his number. You laugh to your self, he gave you his jersey.

Hello sweet pie, I couldn't resist, after rereading your fics I now have to send you a request of mine. If you're not up for it just let me know, no harm done =) my obsession for Chicago MedFirePd is currently on we again awake and raging in my head, so I've got a Kelly Severide. As a freaking simp for protective Kelly it's an angsty fic with drama, hurt and hopefully a fluffy happy ending =)
Kelly has a new neighbor and is instantly taken aback when he sees her for the frist time. She's struggling with moving boxes in her new apartment and clearly is out of breath (she has a heart failure and usually isn't allowed to stress herself out too much, so moving in is taking a huge toll on her). As a charmer he is, hee helps her with moving all her belongings into her apartment, which happens to be exactly next to Kelly's. She's the total opposite of Kelly: shy, cute and graceful and gets easily flustered by Kelly's charming flirting. Over the time they very close friends. Often cook together or having movie nights at each other's apartments. She thinks he's out of her league so she never thought of making a move. He is hesitant to make a move, cause he thinks she's way too good for him. So both of them suppress their feelings for each other. Maybe she also knows his colleagues and he often brings her to Molly's when 51 is meeting. Imagine obe night out she overhears a conversation betwee Kelly and Matt. Matt asks him when he's going to make a move, but Kelly brushes him off, that she's only a friend or something like that.... Which hurts her deeply. When a guy at Molly's hits on her Kelly convinces her (out of his stupid brain) that she should date the stranger.... The date goes terribly wrong, not only Kelly regrets that he pushed you away, the stranger also seems to be a total idiot. Furthermore he drugged her drink and now she's struggling in the bathroom of the bar for consciousness, calling the only person she really trusts with her heart..... I need some serious protective Kelly who becomes a cute care taker and is deathly worried for his sweet neighbor girl.

Title : the cute next door neighbour - Kelly Severide x fem!reader
Warnings : reader gets drugged, angst, a little bit of heartbreak, throwing up, this one is a little dark.
A/n : Thank you for this request! I really love this idea!!! (I did switch it up a little but I hope you won’t mind) And I don’t really know how to write about heart failure, so I’m really sorry if I portrayed it wrong or if this has false or wrong information. Please correct me if I got something wrong. And if you have any more requests or ideas please send them in!!! Sorry if the format is a little weird 😭
After a really long shift all Kelly wanted was to take a warm shower and sleep. He was really surprised when he saw the moving truck driving off from his apartment complex, he had no idea someone was moving in.
Walking into the apartment complex, he quickly ran up the stairs to his apartment. Kelly was exhausted so it took him twice as long to run up the stairs.
Seeing a cute girl next to his door with a bunch of boxes surrounding her, Kelly stopped in his tracks out of surprise. You looked so nice and it made him stop to just admire you. You were trying to lift one of the heavy boxes but you weren’t able to pick them up. You also looked out of breath.
Quickly snapping out of his daydreams, he walked up and said “Do you need any help with that Ma’am?” “Oh yes please, that would be great. If it’s not a bother of course!” You replied, smiling at him softly. “It’s not a problem at all, my name's Kelly by the way. I think we are neighbours.” He smiled, easily lifting up one of the boxes that were lying in front of the door to your new apartment.
“I’m Y/n, usually I’m able to do this on my own but due to my heart failure, I can’t really stress myself or pick up heavy things according to my doctor. And this whole move thing has been a lot.” You laughed a bit awkwardly. “Well I’m glad I can help you out even a little Y/n. And I know moving can be a lot so don’t stress yourself too much.” Kelly flashed a charming smile at you.
After Kelly helped you carry in all of the boxes to your apartment, you thanked him and offered to make him something to drink, since it was really hot outside. Severide of course accepted your offer, even if he was exhausted after shift he still wanted to know more about you. The two of you had a lot in common, so you got along perfectly.
Before you knew it Kelly and you had exchanged numbers, just in case you ever needed help with something. Even though you were next door neighbours it still was a really sweet move. Which made you feel so appreciated and cared for, despite knowing him for such a short time it still made your day so much brighter. His flirting skills made you blush and all flustered. He was really charming and sweet.
After all the nerves and stress related to the move you finally felt like you could take a breath of fresh air.
And that is how it all started.
Soon you started cooking together or having movie marathons whenever you had the time.
Once you even brought chocolate chip cookies to the firehouse, after getting a text from Kelly that they were having an awful shift. That is when you met all of his coworkers who thanked you for the amazing cookies and a few even asked for the recipe.
That’s when Matt noticed the way you look at Kelly. You were definitely in love with him and Severide literally had hearts in his eyes whenever he looked at you. Matt had heard a lot about you from Kelly and he was so excited to finally meet you. Ever since the two of you met, Matt became even more amazed at how oblivious Kelly was.
A while later you got invited to Molly’s by Hermann, saying it would be amazing for you to get to know everyone better. You of course agreed since you heard a lot about Molly’s from Kelly and you finally wanted to see the bar and meet more of his coworkers and friends.
As soon as you entered Molly’s, you looked around in amazement. It looked even better than you had imagined.
Walking up to the bar you ordered a soda since you couldn’t drink alcohol due to your heart failure. Glancing around the bar you saw Matt and Kelly talking at a table and you slowly got up and walked over to say hi.
You overheard Matt say “I mean Kelly you have to ask her out, she’s amazing, sweet and kind and I just think you two would make a great couple. And besides if I were you I wouldn’t want to lose a girl like her. I’d ask her out before someone else does it for you.” And Kelly replied with “Y/n’s just a friend and I don’t see her as anything more.” Just as you approached their table, you tried to turn around and walk back to the bar, but Kelly’s hand wrapped around your wrist and softly pulled you back to him. “Oh hey Y/n, I was hoping you would come.” Severide smiled at you. “I just wanted to say hi, I hope I didn’t interrupt anything.” You laughed a bit awkwardly still thinking about what you had just overheard. “Of course not, c’mon take a seat and sit down.” Matt replied, pulling out the seat that was in between him and Kelly.
You just sat in between them playing with the soda can, not really saying much to them. Kelly’s words were still going through your head.
Did he really only view you as a friend after all of that flirting and stuff?
Was he just leading you on?
Was this whole thing just your imagination?
Gabby approached the three of you, putting another soda can in front of you. “But I didn’t order- Before you could finish she interrupted you saying “It’s from the gentleman at the bar, who said he wanted to order a drink for the beautiful girl sitting at the table.” She smiled at you. “Oh and he also asked me to give you this.” Gabby handed you a folded napkin with a phone number on it. You blushed and asked if she could say thank you to the guy.
Looking down at the napkin you pulled out your phone and typed in the number and sent a short message saying “thank you for the drink!” Putting your phone down, you smiled, since this was the first time you got a napkin with someone’s phone number and a free drink all in one.
After sitting with Matt and Kelly for a bit you decided to go up to the stranger and thank him for the drink once again. You felt a little guilty for ignoring how Kelly looked sad seeing you walk away. But just like he said, the two of you were just friends. Nothing more.
Talking to the stranger who ordered you a drink you found out that his name was Tom. Soon the two of you were laughing and talking like you had known each other for years. You were laughing so hard you had tears running down your cheeks.
A while later Tom asked you on a date and you agreed. Normally you probably wouldn’t say yes to a date with a stranger, but he seemed nice and you just wanted to finally get over Kelly if nothing was ever going to happen between the two of you. “It was for the better.” You thought to yourself.
A few days later was finally the day Tom and you agreed to go on a date together. You both agreed to go to some new bar downtown, since they had recently opened and Tom had heard good things about that place.
The date was a little boring, not much happened and Tom kept on talking about himself and his achievements. Hearing your phone buzz you excused yourself and pulled it out to check who it was from.
Little did you know that something bad was about to happen.
When you returned you took a small sip of your drink and Tom smiled widely, starting to talk about himself again. Looking down into the drink you messed with the straw in your glass. As kind as Tom was, he was a little annoying since he would barely let you get a word in.
You just had a really bad gut feeling, this whole date was a mistake. Something was wrong, the drink tasted wrong and it all felt fuzzy and weird.
You suddenly wanted to go home. But not to your apartment. You just wanted Kelly.
Giving the excuse that you were about to throw up, you got up to leave to the bathroom and Tom stood up and tried to say something but you just ignored him and ran towards the bathrooms.
After you were done throwing up, you started crying. You were exhausted, everything hurt and you felt faint and sick. You just wanted Kelly.
Quickly pulling out your phone, you dialled his number and tried to explain what happened. But he could barely hear you since your breathing was so fast and you were crying really hard. You were able to tell him the address of the bar and that you were in the bathroom. You were slipping in and out of consciousness. Everything was spinning and blurry.
Before you knew it Kelly was running through the door towards where you were sitting on the floor. “Are you okay Y/n/n? How are you feeling?” He asked in concern, kneeling down next to you. “Like shit, I don’t know what happened. Wanna go home.” You mumbled. Kelly nodded and gently asked if you could stand and walk.
When you tried to stand your legs collapsed under you, so Kelly gently picked you up and walked out towards where his car was parked. You were so tired and scared you couldn’t hear what Kelly and Tom were saying. But Kelly seemed really mad. He was shouting something at Tom but you couldn’t make out what he was saying, all you wanted was to sleep.
And before you knew it you were on your way to Med with Kelly. During the drive you just gazed out of the window without saying anything. Kelly didn’t say anything either, he just looked over to you from time to time in concern. With Kelly’s help you unlocked the door and led you inside telling Maggie what happened.
The nurse directed you to an empty room and said that a doctor would be here to see you shortly. You were so tired you were starting to fall asleep. “It’s alright sweetheart, it’s okay. Just sleep. I’ve got you okay?” He said softly, bringing the hair out of your face.
“Kelly?” You asked, looking up to him with tired eyes. “Why’d you say that to Matt? Are we really just friends?” Severide's face fell upon hearing your question. “Y/n, I didn’t mean it like that, it’s just- I don’t want to lose you alright? You are way too important to me and I just thought you didn’t feel the same. I’m sorry sweetheart.”
You just nodded in response. “I was so scared, I didn’t know what to do.” You said, while starting to cry. You were exhausted and the whole events of the last few days came crashing down on you.
Kelly pulled you into his arms and placed a small kiss on your forehead. “It’s gonna be alright sweetheart. I’m here, just let it all out. We’re gonna be alright. We just need to wait for a doctor and we will figure it all out then okay? I’m here.” He softly whispered, pulling you even closer and rocking you side to side.
You were safe with Kelly, and you knew it.
After the doctor checked up on you  and said that they would like you to stay overnight just in case and to get everything out of your system. The doctor also said that a detective or officer would be here to check up on you and take a statement of what happened.
Before you could say anything more to Kelly, to thank him. You just fell asleep in his arms

Summer came into Chicago with rain. Endless droplets poured in all directions with help from the constant wind, soaking everything and anyone that found themselves unlucky to not find shelter in time. You would regularly find the rain charming, relaxing on a day when all you had to do was enjoy the rhythmic patter and drown yourself in cups of tea. However, you dreaded the days when you had to go out and your sneakers were not a barrier thick enough to keep your socks from absorbing all the moisture that splashed onto them.
The rain from that day had fallen extra heavy, enough that you had to pad around in your socks once you reached the gallery and wait for your sneakers to dry.
“How about these?” Marjorie asked, standing over the set of frames laying on the floor.
“Aren’t they a bit too grim for a charity event?” You asked with your head tilted as you inspected the set of six paintings that depicted the progress of a horse’s rotting corpse.
“Yeah…” She hummed then advanced to the next set of frames with you padding behind her. “Y’know I was thinking..call me nosy, but I’ve been taking a peek at your canvas in the back..” She confessed and your eyes shot from the golden shades of a sunset to her face.
“I’ve uhm, been staying a little longer after closing… I hope it’s not a problem..?”
“No, of course not!” She answered and a wave of relief washed over you. “I actually wanted to offer you the last spot.” She said simply, turning to you with a stop.
You stayed silent for a moment, trying to process her words. “I’m sorry, what?” You asked through a nervous laugh, ‘there’s no way I heard right’, you thought.
“Well, Joy sent me a couple pictures of your works before hiring you and the one in the back sealed it. Your style is absolutely lovely and I believe you could make a great closing set for the showing.”
The moisture in your mouth had evaporated and traveled up to your teaducts where it threatened to spill. You felt like a fish out of water with the way your mouth kept opening and closing because, even though your head was racing with thoughts, none seemed to want to come out.
“You don’t need to decide now, of course, but I do need an answer by next week or we’ll have to go with the decapitated horse-”
“No! No, no I’ll do it!” You said with too much excitement to keep still, throwing your arms over her delicate shoulders. “Thank you Marge, thank you!”
She laughed along with your excitement and softly rubbed your back. You mentally reminded yourself to call Joyce and thank her for the push of bravery she had given you.
“D’you think I’ve given you enough time?” She asked after letting her go and beginning to pick up the paintings that you wouldn’t be using anymore.
“Yeah- no, I think three months is more than enough.” You assured, with the ideas already swirling in your head.
“And if you know of anyone who can cater, let me know. God knows what some people have in their heads these days that they wanna charge you your firstborn for a few canapes! Ridiculous!”
She began ranting on how some places wanted to charge more for their reputation than the actual quality of the food and you immediately thought of offering The Beef. Sure, the menu wasn’t nearly as luxurious as needed to cater a charity event held yearly for Chicago’s socialites to feel better about ‘giving back’, but you were more than confident in their ability to handle the challenge - especially considering that Carmy came with a built in reputation from his time in various awarded restaurants. So with a little push in the right direction, you pulled out your phone and after browsing through his feed, you showed her pictures of a few dishes he had crafted.
“Oh, wow.” She marveled, adjusting her glasses over her head. “That is beautiful…”
“I can ask him when he’s free for a test try if you want. They could really benefit from the promotion.” You confessed.
“Yes, please. Tell me when your ‘friend’ is free.” She teased and you’re glad your hair covered your beet red ears. You nodded in response, face beaming with a smile.
“Hmm, I see you two all lovey dovey when he picks you up, you make a beautiful couple, by the way.” Marjorie whispered, then sweetly patted your blushing cheek.
You finished picking up the paintings and wrapping them up for storage in the back, then said goodbye for the weekend and made the short walk in the rain to the restaurant, where you had agreed to help out for the rest of the day.
You reached The Beef huddled under your blue umbrella and by the back door, you shook out your hair from the few droplets that managed to wage their way through. The team was just about to take family by the time you crossed into the kitchen and greeted everyone leaving their stations. You found Syd and Carmy by the front, discussing some new dishes she wanted to add to the menu but he wasn’t quite sure about. You didn’t want to interrupt so you stood a couple feet behind, waiting for their conversation to end.
“Can we please just discuss this later, chef? I plan on adding it -I really do- but new dishes means new products and that means spending money we don’t have right now.” He said while rubbing his temples in frustration.
“I thought you said we finally had a parachute?”
“Yeah and it’s barely keeping us afloat as is. If we spend any more now, we’ll need a fuckin’ miracle to keep this place open.” He whispered harshly, looking around until he spotted your head behind Syd.
“Go take family, okay? We’ll talk about it later.” He ended the conversation then stalked up to you and leaned down to whisper “Can I see you in the office in a sec?”
His stare was so intense that all you could do was nod slowly up at him and when he walked away and you turned to Syd, her expression was just as confused as yours.
“Try to keep it in your pants, maybe.” She said amused, crossing her arms and leaning against the expo.
“Who knows, maybe I can get your risotto on the menu.” You answered back with a wink and turned to walk in direction of the office.
“That would be a miracle” You heard her whisper before turning the corner.
Carmy had his back to you when you entered the office. One hand rested tensely on his hip while the other seemed to rub away an incoming headache. You closed the door softly, then moved to rest your forehead on his strong back and caressed with open hands from his sides to his abdomen.
“Everything okay?” You asked, but the ragged breaths you felt him take were enough of an answer.
He took your hands and pulled them  tighter around himself as he let out a sigh. “It never is, is it?” He answered with a slight snigger while turning in your arms and taking your head in his hands to kiss you.
You smiled into the kiss and as a sudden idea popped into your head, you began pushing him back until he dropped onto the squeaky old office chair. He smiled confused when you disconnected your lips to turn the lock on the door, then moved back to his side.
“Well I may have two good news that might cheer you up…” You spoke in a sultry voice as you stroked from his chest up to his shoulders and back down. “...but maybe they can wait ‘till after.”
“After what…?” He asked, however, his question was answered the second you stepped in front of him and dropped to your knees without a word.
Carmy straightened up and sucked in a sharp breath at the stunning sight of your torso resting between his parted thighs. You kissed him again more fervently and scratched  a trail up, over the hard denim of his black jeans and to the buckle of his belt.
He sighed your name between kisses. “-Everyone’s outside..”
A cheeky grin spread over your face as you finished undoing the button on his jeans. “Don’t make too much noise, then.” You purred with a scrunch of your nose, holding his gaze for a few seconds to make sure he was okay with it.
“No one’s ever…”
“I can stop if you don’t-”
“No-no, I just…” He licked his bottom lip and let out a breathy laugh looking into your eyes. “I kinda had a dream about this… once.” He spoke slowly and a red tint covered his face.
Your smile grew even wider at the thought of poor sweet Carmy, dreaming about you blowing him in his office and how now you were kneeling -very real- in front of him. You palmed him through his jeans with connecting sight and it surprised you how hard he already felt under the denim.
“Well then, I’m flattered to be your first.” You whispered.
Carmy’s Adam's apple bobbed in his throat and he swallowed dryly as you released him from the pressure of his jeans. His eyes were fixated on each of your movements, the way your lip caught on your teeth and how warm your hand felt over his throbbing cock. You looked up at him through your lashes and smiled one last time before bluntly licking a stripe along the length of his velvet skin.
“Sshit-” He hissed, throwing his head back, then remembered the team was only a few yards away and bit the inside of his cheek to muffle the remaining sounds.
The soft skin of your hand stroked him at a slow pace, while the other massaged his thigh tenderly. You gave the pink tip a couple kisses, the taste of his precome coating your tongue, then wrapped your lips over it and sucked him into the warmth of your mouth. His hands had fisted at the side of your face, knuckles gone white from contained strength as you bobbed your head rhythmically.
“I’m not gonna break, y’know?” You breathed out while your hand continued the steady movements. “Go ahead.”
He hesitated for a second before reaching out to feather his thumb over your bottom lip, then extending his hand from your cheek to the back of your neck and pushing you down, back to his lap. You swallowed him gladly, the force of his strong hand applied a new pressure that made you take him even deeper than before and the knot in your abdomen tightened. His soft groans were muffled by the skin of his palm as he clamped it hard to ensure no one outside the room could hear him and how he was falling apart under you.
The thought was ravishing, to have this strong, fucked up and touch starved man trembling in pleasure from just your mouth made your chest swell with pride and your cunt squeeze in anticipation. Too bad you didn’t have enough time or you’d gladly throw everything on the desk to the ground and let him take you on it. You let your thoughts run wild with the idea, speeding up the pace to replace the growing ache between your legs.
His hips stuttered with the constant movements of your tongue and the grip he had on your hair tightened, teeth biting down on the back of his hand from the overstimulation. He knew he was close, but could do nothing more than keep pushing your head down and his hips up to continue the friction. His stomach spasmed with the force of his breaths, you took your hand from his thigh and slipped it under his shirt to run your nails over the sensitive skin.
“Jesus Fuck-” He groaned into the skin of his hand and that was the only warning you got before the thick hot liquid trickled down your throat in short bursts.
Carmy’s grip loosened over your head and you pulled away but kept flicking your hand slowly to ride out his orgasm. His head was thrown back and covered in a thin layer of sweat, the tense expression on his eyebrows long gone. He hissed softly when you put him back into his jeans, the cotton of his boxers too rough on the sensitive skin.
“Better than your dream?” You teased while wiping your mouth with the back of your hand and standing back up.
He let out a relaxed laugh and pulled you by your hips, kissing over your clothed stomach. “Like, by a thousand.” He responded, then pulled you down and groaned into your mouth when he tasted himself. “D’you think they’ll notice if we bail?” He asked against your lips.
“Yo, horndogs! Put your clothes back on and come out! We open in ten!” You heard Richie’s booming voice through the thin wooden door, followed by heavy knocks.
“I think that’s your answer.” You kissed him one last time and turned to the door, readjusting your hair.
“You never told me the good news…”
‘Right, that’s what I came in here for…’
“Remember the charity event I told you about?” You asked and continued once he nodded in agreement. “Well Marge offered me the last spot.” He stared blankly at you. “My paintings are gonna be auctioned at the event!”
He took a split second to react, but soon his brows raised in surprise and he circled his arms around your waist, lifting you from the ground in a tight hug.
“Baby, that’s great! I’m so fuckin’ proud of you!” He cheered, kissing the top of your head. You felt as if the skin on your cheeks would rip from the force of your smile.
“Wait that’s not all-” You laughed as you freed your head from his grip and looked up at his beaming face. “I may have gotten you guys the catering gig for the event.”
“Wait, seriously?” His grip loosened around you and you took advantage of that to turn to the door and step outside to wash your hands, Carmy following close behind.
“Mhm! She wants to see some options first, but I just know you guys are gonna kill it, so it’s practically in the bag.”
“What’re we gonna kill?” Marcus asked, popping his head around the corner of his station and causing a laugh to leave your chest.
You turned to a silent Carmy. He leaned on the wall with his hand resting over his chin and smiling mouth. You mouthed a slow ‘what?’ that he just answered with a shake of his head and wrapped a single arm around your shoulders, kissing your head again and whispering a soft ‘Thank you’ into your hair.
He let you go after a few seconds and you walked to the front with a glowing smile, setting up for the presumed ‘hectic day’, though with the way the sky seemed to be pouring down, you doubted anyone would be stepping foot inside.
**********
You were wrong, so very very wrong. But you would not let anyone know that as you took what seemed like the thousandth order, especially not Richie - who was already having a day picking jokes at you. ‘Haven’t seen you in a month hun, got a lot of ‘em saved up’ he said two minutes after walking through the door.
“What can I getcha?” You asked the next person in line.
Greetings had been lost, maybe fifty or sixty customers back, when you switched with Richie so he could wait on tables because the ipad had gone ‘crazy’ and it was ‘messing with his vibe’, or whatever the fuck that meant. So after clearing the screen from the usual grease, you took his place by the til and began taking the overwhelmingly large amount of orders.
It was only until the rain turned into a light drizzle, when the line grew shorter and the room less crowded, that you finally felt your phone vibrate with an incoming call from an unknown number.
“Richie! Cover for me, I gotta take this!” You called over the noise without waiting for an answer and walked into the kitchen with your phone to your ear. “Hello?”
A sudden rush of sharp chills prickled through your skin as the voice on the other end called your name.
“I-Isaac?” You asked, taken back because there was no way in hell that it could be him, not when you had blocked every one of his attempts to contact you.
“It’s been a while…” He said and you could hear the sly smile behind his words.
You felt the remains of your lunch slowly burn a path up from your stomach.
“Yeah, let’s keep it that way.” You answered as frigid as possible before hanging up and lunging to the bathroom to spill the undigested meal.
“Yo hurry up, I need to- shit you okay?!” You heard Richie’s voice over by the door you had forgotten to close.
You spit the last taste of bile from your mouth and flushed before putting down the seat and slouching defeated over it. The sudden squeak of kitchen shoes vibrated and soon Syd’s head appeared behind Richie.
“Shit- hey you okay?!” She asked at the same time Richie said “So… what- you pregnant?”
“She’s not pregnant you fuckin’ moron!” She yelled at him and pushed him out, closing the door in his face. “You’re not pregnant, right?” She asked, immediately squatting beside you.
“No Syd! I’m not fucking pregnant!” You answered through soft sniffles.
“Okay… what's wrong then?”
“Isaac called me.” You said after a few moments of silence.
“Psycho ex, Isaac?”
“Psycho ex Isaac.” You confirmed with eyes fixated beyond the floor and legs bouncing in anxiety.
“Okay… chill it’s not like he’s gonna come looking for you.” Syd said, trying to calm the evident panic attack bubbling under your skin. “Besides, Carmy wouldn’t let him stand in a ten mile radius of the restaurant, anyway.”
Your head shot up from the floor to look at her with worried brows.
“Because he does know…right?” She asked and the look of guilt slapped on your face was enough of an answer.
She threw her head back and stood with her hands on her hips.
“Dude, why haven’t you told him?!” She sneered with a whisper.
“I-I just couldn’t find the right moment-“
“There is no right moment! Just gotta throw in the bomb and hope for the best!”
“Yes I know, Syd! But I just- I couldn’t bear the thought of him thinking the worst of me, okay?!” You stood up from the seat in defeat and wiggled in the small space to reach the sink and rinse your mouth from the bitter taste.
“And now it’s gonna be worse cause you’ve waited this long.” Syd whispered behind you.
Three knocks at the door interrupted your answer and you looked up at Syd with a terrified look in your eyes. She mouthed a frantic ‘what do I do?’ before calling out a wobbly ‘uh… busy!’.
“I know you’re both in there, open up.”Carmy called with a heavy sigh.
She shrugged her shoulders apologetically and opened the door to a worried Carmy.
“Cousin said you were throwin’ up, everything okay?” He asked as Syd slid past him through the narrow opening, turning to you and pointing with  wide eyes towards Carmy.
“Fucking Richie… yeah, something I ate, probably.” You tried saying while patting  cold water on your skin to reduce the heat rising rapidly.
“Sure? You don’t look too good…”
He turned you to him by your shoulders and cupped your warm cheeks in his hands, looking over your face in concern.
“Yea- yeah, ’m fine. Probably just a one time thing.” His eyes roamed over your face with a creased brow, not fully convinced of your statements.
“You can head home if you’re not feelin’ up to it…” he suggested.
“And miss your stupid cousin telling everyone I’m pregnant, yeah no chance.” You said with a smile and the slight crinkles by the side of his eyes returned. “Besides, they’re gonna start thinking you got favorites.” You joked and laid your head softly over his chest so he couldn’t see your own worried expression.
He rubbed your back slowly, the measured rise and fall of his breathing calmed you down, but only slightly. You could still faintly hear Isaac’s voice bounce off the walls in your head, overpowered by Richie chanting through the kitchen about the little bear cub you were gonna have, and -for the first time since you met him- you appreciated the loudness of it.
The rest of your non-shift passed by in a blur of grease covered sandwiches and slight forming headaches, courtesy of the lack of  food in your stomach and Richie’s constant teasing. There was a point in the afternoon, where your patience had grown too thin and you ended up punching him hard on the arm. It did nothing to him, of course, but it did help in reducing your stress on the train ride back to Carmy’s place.
“Maybe I should get some rain boots…” You commented after making your way inside the empty apartment and immediately kicking off the damp shoes.
“What, like Coraline?” He asked from the kitchen, surprising you. “What?” He asked again when he saw your amused expression. “You think I just watch food movies?”
“I dunno, I assumed you’ve seen Ratatouille but that’s like about it.” You joked.
*********
Carmen had probably used his stove a total of three times since moving back and before you started spending the night regularly, not counting that time he almost set his kitchen on fire while sleepwalking, but you didn’t need to know that. He even made an effort to keep his fridge stocked with other things that weren’t half full cans of Coke or stale bread and that he could actually make into a real meal.
When you arrived home -cause that’s what he liked to call it now- you tried to convince him that it wasn’t necessary to make dinner. But you hadn’t eaten anything all afternoon and it would have been completely fine if he didn’t know, but he did, and letting you go to bed on an empty stomach was not even an option that crossed his mind.
He liked cooking for you. It was the only way he could express how he felt. When words seemed too complicated to string together in coherent sentences, that stuck like thick honey to the roof of his mouth, he cooked them. Whisked them together with a bit of salt and pepper then fried them until crisp, and fed them to you on his best tableware; hoping this way you could understand all the messages his mouth failed to explain.
‘Only if you eat with me’ You had whispered as you took the skillet off the flame for the second time, a determined glow heavy in doe eyes and he knew that in a relationship with two people pleasers, arguing over who cared more for the other would be a lost cause. So he settled on making something quick and joined you on his small living room floor, where you sat with your feet wrapped in a blanket, computer and a couple of his cook books, drawing out ideas on what he could offer for the gala.
“Don’t we still have, like, three months?” He asked with a heavy sigh that came from stretching out his tired legs.
“Yeah.. but this way you’ll have more than enough time to see what works and what doesn’t.” You shrugged your shoulders and took a bite from your plate.
He chewed in silence, mesmerized as you lost yourself in the rabbit hole of all the different options they could serve for the event, flipping through his books and putting little colored post-its on the ones you liked the most. He had never seen you this excited and it brought a feeling to his chest that, if he didn’t know it was because of you, he’d probably confuse with heartburn.
Still, he couldn’t shake the looming sensation off his shoulders, the idea that something lurked around the corner, waiting to pounce. Like how he felt before Sugar called him about Mikey, and when he first learned that The Beef was now his.
For his peace of mind he decided to blame it on anxiety, he had grown so used to always being alert that his body felt wrong when it wasn’t. 'Its probably just a gut feeling' he thought, and he was never that good at reading his gut, anyway.

She paced back and forth, waiting for him to return. Her mind was in shambles. Never had she actually expected someone as wonderful as him to want her. She was in awe of their kiss. Unlike anything she’d ever felt before. The passion, the longing. She’d do anything to kiss him again, to never let him go. She wanted to show him how much she fucking loved him. She sits on her cot, braiding her freshly washed hair mindlessly to pass the time. Her body ached, begging for sleep, but her mind refused to let her close her eyes. She knew that Simon had responsibilities, but right now he was the only one who could comfort her. She needed him to tell her it was gonna be okay.
It wasn’t for nearly another hour when Simon finally walked into the room. She instantly stands and moves over to him, wrapping her arms around his middle, burying her face in his best. He holds her and rubs her back. He takes his mask off and throws it to the side. “You doing okay?”
“Yeah” she nods
“So whats the word? What do we do now?”
“You’re going home”
“You’re coming with me right?”
“No”
“Hassan?” she asks
“we've gotten intel on Hassan, we learned he's planning to take things nuclear. got a set up in Chicago, we're flying out in the morning”
“Okay” she nods
He looks down, refusing to meet her gaze “I've debriefed with Laswell and we're transporting you back to base in the UK immediately. From there you’ll take the first flight back to the states where you’ll be personally escorted home. Pack up we've got 20 minutes till your transportation arrives”
“And what about you?” she asks
“I'll be joining the rest of the team for Chicago in the morning. just need to tie up a few... loose ends here”
“When will you be back?”
“it's up in the air at the moment, we'll try and get him fast but we can't be sure. could be a day, could be a week... or longer”
“I should come with you then -”
Simon’s jaw tenses as he steps closer to her “its not safe for you, I’m trying to keep you out of harms way”
“I don’t wanna leave you, what if you get hurt -”
“This is for the best” he says coldly, she stares up at him and takes a step back, recognizing the cold tone. “This isn’t going to work out… between us”
“Why?” she asks as her heart stops, tears instantly fill her eyes “why would you say that to me?”
“I just... can't put you in danger like this anymore. I need to put the team first, we just got too invested and its a mess now. I'm sorry. I need to break things off before it gets too deep”
“If you’re saying this because of what happened, it was nothing! I’m fine! Don’t push me away again” she asks
“I knew this would happen and I was too fucking stubborn to stop it! I tried so hard to keep you away, I destroyed us both for nothing. this is my life the people who get close to me die! I never should've let you in” he shakes his head, turning his back as he runs his hands through his messy hair. This was hurting him just as much as her, but he knew it was better this way.
“Simon don't say that, I'm here, we're here! I'm gonna go back to base and you're gonna deal with Hassan and I'll still be here when you come back!”
“not this time love... this is it. I'm not letting you risk your safety again after what happened back there. this time. you're better off without me.”
“no I'm not! every second we're apart I feel like I can't breathe! I understand why you think we're a bad idea, but it's not a crime to let yourself be happy! what happened here with Graves was not your fault, you saved my life, you brought me home! you're a fucking hero Simon!” she pauses and take his hands
“don't push me away again, you’re the only thing that makes sense to me” she admits
“You have no idea how hard this is. You're everything I've ever wanted. How can I possibly face you again after this? how can I let you near me? the darkness in me will take us both”
“I won’t let that happen”
“you've seen my face! you know my name! now that we're associated you'll be used against me!”
“if that's the price I have to pay for you then so be it! I don't care!”
“But I do! I can’t fucking let you get hurt again don’t you understand?”
“If association is what you're worried about then I quit, I won't work on base anymore! Just tell me what you want from me and I’ll do it!”
“I don't know! I don't know anymore! everything's such a god damn mess and I'm sick of losing the people I love, okay?!” tears well up in his eyes as he finally breaks.
“I know, but you’re not gonna lose me Si” she says gently as she walks over to him on the bed and pulls him into her. He leans his head on her chest as she wraps her arms around his shoulder. He holds her tightly as she runs a hand through his hair.
“I'm sorry, I just can't let you go through this any-”
“I don't care! I want it all, give me the pain if you're my reward”
“Why can’t you ever make things easy for me?”
“Not in my nature”
He kisses the top of her head and caresses her cheek with one hand. his lips are soft and teasing as he pulls her in closer for a deep and intense kiss. he holds her tightly, not breaking the kiss until they’re both short of breath.
“You win” he says “anything you want, I’ll do it love”
“All I want is you”

i can take it - jay halstead x reader
trigger warning- assault, getting beaten
overview: intelligence has been working none stop on a high profile human trafficking case, you and kim have been undercover a while, trying to get evidence but in the process they find out someone’s a cop. you admit to protect kim but what are the costs?
chicago pd masterlist
***
“dante!” you heard the ringleader shout to the man who was currently with you,kim and a load of other women and girls. you were undercover in what from the outside was a female’s only hostel but the reality was much darker. kim watched dante walk to the ringleader as he whispered something in his ear and they both looked directly to you and kim, you knew you were made.
“girls we have some friends coming here so i need everyone in there rooms now” the ringleader spoke, all the girls stood and began retreating to their rooms. no questions asked. just as you and kim began to do the same he spoke again;
“you two hold up. come with me” you completely detached yourself from kim not looking at her, not standing too close. making sure it was clear through your body language you had nothing to do with her.
you both followed him into a empty room and he reached to his waistband pulling out a gun. you internally cursed trying to figure out you you got made. he aimed the gun at you both.
“a little birdy told me there’s a cop. and you two are the newest sluts here. one of you better tell me who it is” he waved the gun between you both and kim tried to reason convincing the guy neither of you were cops but he only grew more agitated aiming the loaded gun to kim’s head.
“it’s me! im the cop. she’s not involved” you exclaimed, the man’s head shot to look at you a smirk rising on his face. he turned to kim letting her go back to her room before grabbing your arm, his cold fingers wrapped tightly around your arm his nails digging into your skin as he dragged you to a smaller room full of junk. he pushed you against a book case. you knew this was gonna be bad you were either gonna be leaving here in an ambulance or a body bag. yet all you could think about was your boyfriend jay, who would be listening to whatever was about to happen.
“every single girl in this building will end up dead if you don’t talk” you could hear the anger in his voice, you knew the rest of your team was listening. you didn’t want to blow this case so many tragedies because of this man, yet you needed more evidence. you couldn’t let the team move in yet. especially if what he just said was true.
“you’re the only cop huh?” he questioned his eyes glued on yours not a ounce of life behind them. he took a step closer to you his hands balling into fists, you knew. he threw a punch to the side of your face causing you to fall back into a pile of junk behind you. he took a fistful of your shirt holding you up.
“answer the damn question!” he shouted another hit coming down on your face as he let go of your shirt pushing you back into a mirror causing it to smash a few shards slicing your skin. you took a second to catch your breath.
“i can take it” you weren’t talking to him. you were talking to jay, he was all you could think about he was keeping you strong in the moment. you stood back up and looked at the man towering over you.
“ i’m the only cop” you spat, you could feel the thick warm blood running down your face and other parts of your body. you were trying to push the pain as far back as you could.
“what’s a slut of a cop like you doing here?” he questioned throwing you against the mirror again, you winced on impact you could feel shards of the glass penetrating your skin.
“i think you know ray” you spat the blood pooling in your mouth on the floor before he threw you to the ground kicking you in the ribs, you felt as if you heard a rib crack from the pressure.
on the outside the team were sat listening as you winced from the pain being inflicted on your body. voight had forbidden anyone from going inside knowing you could handle your own. you said you could take it. if you wanted them to move in you would say the safe word. this case was so high profile you didn’t want to risk blowing it.
“i’m going in there! you can either come with me or stay put” jay spoke anger radiating in his voice. he couldn’t bare to sit and listen any longer, he didn’t want you to be in pain. it was tearing his heart apart.
just as they heard another tumble from your microphone, they heard your voice again. “i can take it”
no. jay didn’t want you to have to take it. he didn’t know what state you would be in when you got out of that building. he didn’t care about the case, he needed you to be safe. he got up from being seated next to kevin with a look on his face that resembled a soldier heading into battle.
“jay shell say the words if she needs us. kim’s working on finding something” kevin tried to reassure his colleague despite they all felt similar to jay. voight, kevin, adam all of them wanted to run in there. but that was putting every woman in that building at risk as well as possibly blowing the case.
“i can’t listen to this!” jay spat, his concern for you turning into rage. kevin sighed hoping jay would make the right choice and wait but he couldn’t. he wouldn’t forgive himself if you died in there. just as jay went to get out the van they heard your safe word.
“go move in!” voight shouted through the radio and jay was first to move, he ran towards the building gun drawn high. kevin and the rest of the team not far behind him. as they moved into the building jay ran straight to find you, followed by adam. and the rest of the team went to clear the building and save the girls as well as get to kim.
jay kicked open a door seeing you being held against a wall by your throat. the man holding you tightly, you could feel your heartbeat in the side of you head and you couldn’t breathe. jay approached the man hitting him on the side of the head with the side of his gun. the man turned in an attempt to hit jay, but jay was faster, ducking and planting a strong punch to the man’s nose he fell to the floor from the force as adam grabbed him securing him in cuffs to avoid jay doing anymore damage, although he deserved it.
“y/n?! you stay with me babe” he spoke in a panicked tone as he rushed towards you, all of jays attention now glued to you. you wanted to close your eyes. let yourself sleep, but jay begged you to stay awake so you tried your best. but that wasn’t enough.
“50-21 george, i need an ambulance to my location now!” jay called into his radio before turning his attention back to you, the blood pouring from your lip, and almost every other part of your face and body was heart wrenching to him. he never wanted to see you like this.
all you could hear as you fell unconscious was jays voice begging you to stay awake and the distant sound of sirens.
the next thing you know your senses are filled with familiarity, the slow sound of beeping, the hospital smell, and a warm hand in yours. you could feel the pain pulsating through your veins as your eyes fluttered open to meet the beautiful blue eyes in front of you that were filled with concern. jay halstead.
“how are you feeling?” he asked, voice laced with concern as he held your hand so gently as if he thought he’d hurt you, the relief he felt upon seeing your eyes open was uncanny.
“like i got hit by a bus” you smiled weakly, he reciprocated the smile. he gently brought your hand up to his lips planting a soft kiss on your bruised skin.
“you scared the shit out of me” he whispered, you could tell you’d seen sadness on his face before. but not like this.
“i didn’t wanna blow the case” he shook his head.
“nothing is more important then your safety y/n. especially not to me. i don’t know what i would’ve done if-“ he cut himself off and took a deep breath before he continued.
“if you had died. i don’t know what i would’ve done. you’re my rock, as cheesy as it sounds, you’re the love of my life. you help me when i have a mix up with my ptsd. i love you” you felt a tear come to your eye at his words. little did he know how much you helped him too.

10,000 feet above Des Moines, Iowa, Mackenzie Hischier looks out the window as her plane begins to descend from her connecting flight from LAX. She has been flying across the world for almost 18 hours trying to get here. Queenstown, New Zealand was home for her the past three weeks. Her internal clock is all sorts of fucked up from the massive time swing she is going through, but she was able to sleep in sync with the Central Time Zone on her first flight. She is hopeful that will curb some of her jet lag.
The landscape below is much different from the crystal blue water and rigid mountain peaks she came from. Instead, it is flat and vast, various different shades of greens and brows. It’s also windy. She scrunches her nose as the plane swings a bit to the left before continuing on at a smoother pace. There is not much out here to block the wind, but thousands of windmills dot the prairie below them to capture the best energy source nature can give this area. Mack has never been to Iowa, or the Midwest outside of Chicago, which doesn’t feel or look anything like what she is seeing.
Shortly after landing, Mack walks out of the secure area, heading down to baggage claim 2. As she gets closer to the carousal, she sees a tall man with a thick black mustache, blue jeans, and a plain white t-shirt stretched across his broad chest. His hands are stuffed in his pockets as he leans against the wall by baggage claim 2, boot clad feet crossed over at the ankles. A worn, NYR baseball cap is on his head, hiding his green eyes that are devouring her even as they hide in the shadow of the bill. Mack can see the toothpick in his mouth as she gets closer. He pushes off from the wall, starting to walk towards her. Never in her life did she think she would do this, but her pace quickens and she hustles her ass across that tiled floor to be picked up by him.
“Hi!” She exclaims as she throws herself at him. He catches her easily, hauling her up his chest, both big hands clutching her ass.
“Hi honey.” He grins up at her. Mack licks her lips, then puts them on his. He squeezes her tighter into their kiss. “Mmm, missed that. Missed you.” He lets her slide down his body, Vans hitting the tile again. “Thought it was winter in New Zealand. How are you so tan?”
“There was so much sun! We got lucky pretty much the whole trip.” This trip was with two of her colleagues because it is a big feature with the magazine. Mack is grateful they had a photographer so she could focus more on the stories of the locals and less about getting the perfect shot for print.
“Good. Glad it worked out for you, baby.” He says, wrapping an around around her shoulders. “You tired?”
“Um, yeah. Don’t let me fall asleep.” She mumbles into his side.
“I won’t. You’re in Iowa now. We gotta work when we get back to the farm.” Mack’s eyes widen. She looks up at him with concern. David starts to laugh.
“I’m kidding. Work is done for the day.”
“But tomorrow?”
“It begins all over again. Gotta feed the cows, let the chickens roam, check fence, and a thousand other tasks.”
“Hard working boy.”
“Yeah.” He grins proudly. The beeping of the baggage claim alerts them before the metal begin to turn. David sees Mack’s bag and steps forward, easily hauling it off. “Just this?” Mack nods. “Let’s go baby.” He holds a hand out for her to take. She laces their fingers together, surprised at how rough his hands feel. Her gaze travels up his arm to his bicep, noting it is rock hard and bulging even without flexing.
“How long of a drive is it?” She asks after they are tucked into David’s big, black truck. He whips it fast and easy out of the parking spot, then roars the diesel engine out of the parking ramp.
“Ah, about an hour.” He tells her, sliding his hand over to cup her thigh. She weaves her fingers through his. He squeezes them tight. “Plenty of time for you to tell me everything about your trip.” Mack smiles, adjusting herself in the passenger seat so she can look at him while she talks. She loves talking to David. As great as everything else is with him, he is a great listener and always asks the best, most insightful questions about her work. She could talk to him for hours. When she is done, she switches the topic of conversation to him.
“Tell me about the farm. What can I expect?”
“Um,” He chuckles, nudging his hat up off his forehead to scratch an itch. “Well, it’s pretty quiet out there. We are about 15 minutes south of the town closest to us. It has been hot this summer, so I hope you got some summer clothes in there.” Mack does. She packed as accordingly as she could. “Hours are long. I’ll be up before you and come back around dinner time.”
“Oh, I thought you have staff?” Mack questions.
“I do, but someone needs to manage them.” David says. “My farm manager is off on vacation right now. Usually takes the whole month of August off and leaves it to me before he is back to managing it on his own when I head East.”
“Oooo, you’re the boss.” Mack giggles.
“Yeah of the farm and you.” He quips. Mack rolls her eyes. He is not the boss of her, but he can keep pretending he is.
“Am I gonna see you while I’m here?” She jokes. David licks his lips and nods.
“Yeah, I’ll be able to step away. I have some things planned for us too. Figure I could take you back up to the state fair next week. Get you something on a stick.” Mack gives him a weird look. “You ever been to a state fair? County fair? Nothing?” Mack shakes her head no to both. “Holy shit.” He chuckles.
“At least I don’t think we did when we lived in Jersey. I don’t know that was a long time ago.”
“A fair is where you eat fried food, mostly on a stick, and play games to win prizes, drinks some beer or other frozen drinks to stay cool. Farmers and 4H kids bring their animals to the fair to be judged.”
“What is 4H?” Mack wrinkles her nose in confusion. David looks slack jawed at her.
“Oh baby. It’s gonna be a whole different world here for you.” He laughs like it’s cute to him.
Mack feels the first itch of apprehension tickle her spine.
She has been all over the world, but she may be completely out of her league here.
- - -
The moment Mack steps out of David’s truck in the parking lot of the local watering hole, she can hear the consistent beat of the country song thumping in the tiny bar. David says its a bar, but to Mack it honestly looks like a shack she would avoid if she was alone. After getting a tour of the farm earlier, David informed Mack they were going to be meeting his friends for drinks. He has been talking her up all summer and they’re all eager to get a glimpse of this mystery woman who has stolen David’s heart.
Mack purses her lips for a moment, then looks down at her outfit. She is dressed in a flowing black, long sleeved top from Dior and Black frayed shorts from a boutique in Paris, paired with a Gucci belt. On her feet are black and white Nike Air Force ones. She has on various expensive, designer jewelry and a Prada cross-body bag her mom and dad got her for her last birthday. David had told her she looked good for where he was taking her. She feels very, very overdressed, like even her silk pajamas would be too fancy for this place.
“David.” Mack mumbles when she meets him at the back of the truck. He grabs her hand in his.
“What?” He asks. He is in dark jeans with a blue and white, light weight flannel. His sleeves are rolled up his forearms, exposing his tattoos and the tan skin from a summer of hard work. He took a shower and styled his hair perfectly with a crisp part and a perfect swoop.
“I am so overdressed.”
“What do you mean?” He asks. “You look great?” Mack doesn’t know how to tell him that she is pretty sure her outfit costs more than this bar does. “Don’t worry about it. You’re beautiful and sexy and you’re walking in on my arm. No one is going to mess with you.” Mack snorts and then starts to laugh.
“I wasn’t thinking that, but I’m trying to make a good impression.”
“Babe, they are going to love you. Trust me.”
Within an hour, Mack senses that isn’t going to be the case.
She can feel the judgement. Detect the way it crawls over her body from his friends. The looks of “not one of us” and the whispers between the girls. She has been talked about enough behind her back throughout life to know when it’s happening right in front of her face. It started when she tried to order a Paloma. The bartender had looked at her like she grew a second head. She glances at David nervously.
“Curley, it’s tequila, grapefruit juice and lime. You got all that shit behind the bar.” David gestures to the wall of liquor.
“You wanna come make it David?” Curley asks.
“Fuck. Sure.” David shrugs, going behind the bar and showing Curley how to put the drink together. “You think you got that for next time?” Curley did not look like he had it for next time, so Mack switches to tequila and soda instead.
The conversation around her has centered on all things farm and rural life. What so and so is up to now. Who had a baby. Who just got divorced. Who was cheating on who. It all seemed very juvenile and uninteresting to Mack. David stayed out of it for the most part, listening along with Mack until his friends, Cody and Trevor, started talking Iowa Hawkeye football. Then she lost him to that.
Mack fingers the cocktail napkin that is soaked with condensation below her glass. It’s times like these where Mack feels so out of place in a country she is a citizen off. She knows this isn’t a full, direct correlation of America, but how can she be more out of place here than when she was in Tokyo last year? Or she can get down and dirty in the rice fields of Thailand and feel more connection with locals who don’t speak the same language than she can in the center of the country she was born in.
David’s lips on her temple break her internal discourse. Mack smiles at him. He rubs her shoulder as if to ask “you good?” She nods at him, smiling reassuringly.
Dun, nu, nu sounds through the bar speakers, then the whole group slaps their hands on the table. “Woo!” They yell. Then Dun, Nu, Nu. Slap, “Woo!” The whole table erupts excitedly, as a man begins to drawl over the sound system. The table turns to look at David, screaming out the next lyrics, “You were raised on an asphalt farm!” Mack blinks, feeling lost. David tips his head back, laughing loudly.
“Davey! It’s your song!” A girl who Mack can’t remember her name, screams then chugs more of her Miller Lite.
“Get up and swing your asphalt girl around.” Mack’s eyes widen. David chuckles, tapping her thigh assuringly.
“No, we are good.” David knows Mack would rather be a metal sign on the wall of the bar than get up when no one else is dancing. Being on display is not her thing. She is grateful for that until she sees the sneering glares of the two women at the end of the table.
“Oh, she’s too good for dancing too.” Mack faintly hears.
Mack looks at David. She can tell he didn’t hear what she heard. Not surprising with how loud his other male friends are signing along to the country song. Mack looks down at the girls, noticing how they avoid direct eye contact with her. The blonde one puts her hand up to her mouth, whispering in the red head’s ear. Then they both giggle.
“No, let’s dance.” Mack suddenly says to David. She isn’t going to let two, small town, hick bitches intimidate her.
“What?” He responds, surprised.
“Yeah, show me what you got cowboy.” She jokes as she stands.
The entire table sucks in a huge, deep breath.
“Oooooooo She is in trouble.” One of the boys mumbles. David gives her a sympathetic smile.
“We aren’t cowboys, honey. We are farmers.”
“What is the difference?” Mack scoffs, laughing, thinking he is pulling her leg. David winces slightly at the large yelp of the table behind him, then grabs Mack, pushing her towards the center of the bar.
“I’ll show you later.” He chuckles, kissing her mouth.
“Did I say something wrong?”
“Ah, no. They’re just sensitive. Don’t quite understand how other people are outside of these state lines.” Mack gets quiet, retreating into herself again. David practically drags her around in a circle because she is shutting down internally. “Hey…” He trails off. “This is all new to you. It’s okay.”
“They don’t like me.” She looks at the center of his chest as she says it, not wanting to see the confirmation on his face.
“Nah, they just don’t know you, sweetheart. A lot of layers to your onion.” David can twist into any which way that he wants, but they both know Mack is right. They don’t like her… right now at least.
When Mack and David head back to the table after their dance, the mood at the table has seemed to shift. Now, they all ignore her.
“How is the herd looking, Trent?” David asks the guy across from Mack. David’s hand is around her shoulder, rolling his fingers in a circle over the thin material of her shirt.
“Should be a good year.” Trent says. “We really need it. Been hurting the last few.”
“Yeah, we all have.” David nods. “Weather has been shit. Can’t out work that.”
We can sure fucking try tho.” Trent grins, then clinks beer bottles with him. David brings his over to clink with Mack’s glass. She does so. Trent sucks at his teeth, making a slight slurping noise after swallowing more beer.
“Mack, where did you grow up?”
“In New Jersey before we moved back to where my dad is from in Switzerland.” He nods.
“You have a job growing up or anything?” David cocks his head to the side at Trent. “I’m just trynna find something to relate to her with.” He justifies.
“Um, no. My parents wanted us to focus on school.” Trent sighs like he is disappointed.
"Must be nice to have a daddy who was able to give you anything you wanted. Didn’t have to work your way through high school to make ends meet.”
“Trent, knock it off.” David snaps. “Mack knows what hard work is.”
“Does she? Cause the rest of us aren’t thinking she does.”
“Hey, don’t speak for all of us.” Cody snaps. “Drink your beer and shut up.”
“I’m just thinking that it must be nice to have an NHL daddy who can call in a favor to get you a job where you barely have to work as an adult too.” David stands up, chair knocking back to the floor. He reaches across the table to grab Trent, hauling him up to a standing position.
“Apologize, right now, and I won’t smear you into the wood floor your daddy installed.”
“I-I-I’m sorry. I think I’m drunk.”
“No shit.” David sneers, shoving Trent back into his chair. The rest of the table goes ghostly silent. Other bar patrons look over their shoulders at the group. Mack is flaming red over the embarrassment of the words thrown her direction and David’s intense reaction. She is equally mortified and turned on.
“I’m going to go to the bathroom.” Mack whispers as David kisses her cheek in reassurance. David gives her a sympathetic look, drowning apologetic eyes watching her as she heads to the back of the bar.
Mack goes into the first stall, leaning her back into the tiled wall and covering her face. She sucks in deep breaths, trying not to cry. This night could not get any worse. She wants to leave so bad, but she has never been one to back down from a fight. She isn’t going to start now. She doesn’t want them having the satisfaction of seeing her rattled and vulnerable. No, she’ll throw her walls up and fake charm the pants off them. But first, she is going to grab some fresh air.
She heads through the double wood doors, walking down the parking lot, away from the posse of smokers out front. Her arms are crossed over her chest tightly trying to fight off the chill. She doesn’t understand how it can be so hot in the afternoon, but cool down in the evening. Another thing about Iowa she just “can’t understand”. Tears sting her eyes a bit. She feels dumb. Why is this bothering her so much? That guy is a douche. She knows who she is. She shakes off his words, running her fingers through her hair. Mack knows its because she wants to belong here with David. And from her perspective, so far this trip has been less than successful.
A big, heavy jacket comes around her shoulders. She looks to her right, seeing David. His eyes are boring into her, studying her face.
"Looking at the stars?" He asks her.
"Mhm." She looks up at the millions of little dots. Now this reminds her of being in the Swiss Mountains. The same sort of inky black sky dotted with delicate twinkles. He runs his fingers along her shoulder, resting on the back of her neck. He guides her into his side.
"Talk to me, Hisch."
"I guess I don't have much in common with this version of you.” Her European accent drips into her voice. She is surprised to hear that. It only comes out when she is feeling emotional, creating a difficulty with keeping a Western dialect. David grabs the opening of his jacket on her, tugging so she turns completely towards him. He steps forward, crowding her space. He brings a big paw to her chin, tilting her face up to his.
“What version?” He asks, laughing it off. “Baby, I am who I am. No matter where I am.” He brushes her hair back behind her ear. “And you’re everything I’ve dreamed of.” Mack can see how much he means it. It’s in his touch on her cheek, in his gaze stroking along hers, in the sureness of his voice. She nods. He captures her lips. The kiss is soft, sweet sucks and gentle nudging of his tongue against her bottom lip. His other hand winds around her waist, pressing into her lower back to keep her tight to him.
David says the right things, but that kiss says more to Mack than his words ever could.
His lips on hers erase it all- the insecurity, the doubt, the not belonging, the not good enough.
He grounds her because he knows what she needs immediately, sometimes before she even knows. But tonight, it is his physical reassurance soothing her more than anything. He towers over her, shielding her from everything with his muscular body, and consumes her in a way that feels safe not smothering.
"Just say the word and I'll go back in there to straighten Trent out." Truthfully, having him storm back in there would be so fucking hot. She would get to watch him teach Trent a lesson and get all hot and bothered between her thighs.
“What is the other option?” She murmurs.
“I take you home. We can spend the rest of the night by ourselves.”
Mack contemplates what home entails. She wants him to hold her hand in his dark truck the whole way home. She craves for him to undress her slowly in that small house. His boots hitting the floor at the foot of the bed while he urges her to lay back so he can take his time undressing her. She needs his rough, calloused hands on her soft hips as he pulls her panties down her legs. Then she wants him soft and slow, gently thrusting deep into her in a missionary position as he irritates her lips with his mustache.
And that’s exactly what Mack gets.
“You look so good for me, honey. So wet and soft and perfect. Take me so well.” He praises her from where he holds his weight above her. His hot breath dances over her face, coated in light beer and her from his previous perch between her thighs. Mack is blissed out, drunk on him and the stroking of him against the walls of her pussy.
“David.” She sighs, collecting him to her chest. He presses his to hers and then rolls his tongue into her mouth. He gathers her moans, sucking them up greedily so they are only his tonight. He fucks her deeper, harder, perfect bucks into her wet heat. “Fuck you’re so good. So fucking good.” She cries.
“Yeah? Best?”
“Yeah!” She yells.
“Say my name, sweetheart. Say who makes you feel this good.”
“You! David!” She howls.
“Good girl. My girl.” He groans. Mack’s inner walls clench him, pulling him deeper with each flutter of her getting closer and closer to the edge. Her heels dig into his butt, forcing him to stay right fucking there. She turns her face into his neck, sinking her teeth into him as she comes.
Afterwards, David plays with her fingers as she lays on his sweaty chest. He kisses her forehead, inhaling the scent of her deeply. He keeps his face there afterwards, as Mack starts to go limp in his arms. Her eyelashes brush gently against his warm skin. He shifts her hips a bit, turning to the side so she can lay more comfortable in the crook of his arm.
“Goodnight, honey.” He whispers on her forehead. Then kisses her a final time before leaving her to her slumber.
- - -
Two weeks into her trip, Mack is still having some trouble adjusting to Iowa. Every thing is completely different here. The grocery store, the little town he took her into, the restaurant options and drinks, even the air is different! It’s laced with manure and dust, making her nose plugged up so she constantly has to drainage. Her eyes have been almost swollen shut every morning of that first week.
“Do you have allergies?” David had asked her. Mack didn’t think so, but she’s also never been to a place quite like this. After a few days of Zyrtec, Mack can finally breathe through both nostrils.
In celebration, and because she is admittedly very bored, she gets into the shower. It’s the only thing in the farm house that is modern. David likes to take long showers after working in the field all day to get clean and relax. He’ll bring a can of Coors Light in with him and have some alone time. Mack thinks is is adorable, getting to see his self-care routine in Iowa. He doesn’t do this after games in NYC, but she thinks that might be because his adrenaline is usually still roaring after hockey. His favorite post-game routing has seemingly been sex.
After getting clean and putting on some light make up, along with a sundress, Mack got to work putting together a meal for them. She opted for easily transported items like chips, sandwiches, and cut up fruit. Then she made some lemonade from the cup of lemonade mix she found in the pantry. David loves Lemonade down here. She is starting to enjoy it too. This time she puts fresh strawberries in for a little extra sweetness.
Mack glances out the front window to where two farm hands are working. She puts her feet in the cowboy boots David got her at the boot store in town when she first got here. They are more broken in now and are no longer hurting her feet, so she feels comfortable wearing them for today’s excursion. Then she grabs the basket and steps outside.
Mack covers her eyes with her hand, looking out at the vastness of the farm. David took her on a tour her second day here, but she doesn’t remember anything. She worries about getting lost out there. She double checks that she has her phone. At least she seems to have good service here.
“Um, hi.” Mack says nervously as she walks up to the two farm hands by the barn.
“Hi Mackenzie.” They greet her happily. Something about being the boss’ girlfriend she is sure.
“Mack is fine. Um, do you know where I can find David?” She holds up the basket with their lunch. “I want to bring him lunch.”
“Oh, he is in the far back 40 on the edge of the farm property.” One of them says.
“Okay. And I can get there with that?” She points to the small utility vehicle they whip around on the front of the farm.
“Yeah….” They trial off, giving each other a look. “Do you know how to get there?”
“I know everything branches off from this road, she points to the left. But after that I am a little lost.”
“I can take you.” The older one, who seems to be more in charge says. “We can take the truck.” Mack nods. “I can put that in the bed for ya.” He hoists it over into the truck bed, then they both get into the cab.
“What is your name?” She asks once they start down the dirt road. Rocks kick up against the mud flaps and the underbelly of the truck, making her have to yell a bit over to him.
“Felix.”
“Nice to meet you.” She smiles politely. “Thank you for taking me.”
“Of course. Mr. David says you are our special guest. Can’t let you get lost out here.” Mack blushes, biting her bottom lip.
“Oh I don’t know about that. How long have you worked on the farm?”
“About 25 years. I worked for Mr. Chuck before Mr. David.” Mack knows Chuck is David’s dad. She doesn’t ask, but wonders if he was there when Chuck passed away on the farm.
“That is nice. You must like it here?”
“Yes, they are fair to their workers and their families. Last year, my wife had cancer. The treatment was expensive. We had to travel up to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. But Mr. David paid for the whole thing and kept my job. My wife has now been in remission for five months.” Felix does the sign of a cross then kisses his lips in praise.
“Wow.” Mack murmurs. David never told her that.
“He is special. Nothing like his siblings.” Felix’s face seems to cloud over. “We are happy he bought them out of the farm.” Another thing Mack wasn’t aware of. “He has made changes, some hard to learn at first, but all have been good. For us and him. More money and security. People on other farms around here want to work for him the most.” Pride swells in Mack’s chest at hearing that.
Felix turns to the right, heading away from the road and out for a few minutes. They come over a hill, down into a valley where Mack see’s David’s black truck. She frowns, realizing he is out here working alone.
“Is he always out here alone?” She wonders.
“No, just today.” He says. “It’s a hard day for him.” Mack furrows her brows, but nods along. He didn’t say anything before they left. He seemed normal too.The truck comes to a slowed stop. David is working along the fence line. He wipes his forehead with his forearm, looking up at the truck. He sees Felix, then grins huge when he sees Mack.
“Felix! Look at you bringing me pretty little things after busting me for that in high school.” Felix roars with laughter, his big chest shaking as he leans out the rolled down window.
“This one seems a little less crazy.”
“Eh, you don’t know her like I do.” David winks. He tosses his tools into the cab of his truck. “Stay here, honey.” He says to her. Mack stays put, letting David come to her door. He opens it up, then gives her his hand to help pull her down safely from the high farm truck. “You okay?”
“Yeah, I brought lunch to you.”
“Oh?” He wiggles his eyebrows, then drags his gaze along her body in her blue, linen sundress.
“Actual food.” She fills him in. He quips a smirk at her, then leans down to kiss her.
“Basket in the back, sir.” Felix says.
“How many times do I have to say not to call me that?” David rolls his eyes.
“How many times I gotta tell you it’s about respect?” Felix quips back. Mack smiles. She likes Felix a lot. She can see herself getting to know him more over the next few weeks.
“Fine. Hey, when you get back up can you tell Becks to get to the N.E. pasture and start working some of the cows into N.D. pasture instead? I don’t think I’m going to get to that today.”
“You bet. I’ll have Reed go with him too. That kid needs to get the hell off my project.”
“He’s a little wild.” David acknowledges. “That’s why he is with you.” David reminds Felix who sighs heavily. “Look what you did with me.” He grins.
Felix waves and drives off back to the barn after David hauls the picnic basket out of the back.
“I brought a blanket too.” Mack pulls it out of her bag that she had slung across her shoulder. David drops the tailgate of his truck, then lays the blanket along the back.
“That’s good otherwise your thighs would be burning in that short dress.”
“Is it short?”
“Honey, you know it is.” He slaps her ass to prove his point, getting some of her bare cheek against his palm. Mack leans forward, feeling the fabric slide further up her thighs as she digs in the picnic basket. David runs his fingers up from her knee to cup her ass. He reaches for her arm, pulling her away from the food. “Want something else first.” He sighs against her mouth.
“What if someone comes to find you?” She weakly protests. She had this in mind for lunch too.
“They’ll call me.” He murmurs against her mouth. “Trust me, I don’t want any of my guys seeing you, honey. I wouldn’t take the chance if I didn’t think it was safe.” Mack nods, believing him completely.
He wraps an arm around her waist, pinning her tight to him. His hard cock protrudes from beneath his zipper, pulsing for Mack to touch. Her fingers, clutch the back of his neck, feeling his skin sweaty and hot beneath her fingers. He smells sexy like sweat and deodorant that works just as hard as her man. It’s hot, sexy as fuck to the point that Mack wraps her leg around his waist to grind against him.
David moves his mouth from hers and presses kisses along her throat. He sucks her skin hard into his mouth at the nook of her neck and shoulder, then continues down. Mack arches back, letting her head fall back so he can access her chest completely. His lips continue their path over the swell of her left breast, then he nudges the fabric to the side. Her nipple pebbles in the sunlight, pink and beautiful, just for him. He opens his lips, pulling it in. His tongue strokes over her sensitive peak, then creates a wet trail to the other one, grabbing it between his lips. He lets that one go with a final slurp, then goes back to kiss her mouth.
“Mmm.” Mack hums. Her fingers go to his belt, working it apart. She pulls his hard length out of his jeans and underwear, stroking along his shaft, feeling the velvet skin tight in her hand. She works her fingers up to his head, stroking until his slit releases pre-cum.
“Fuck.” He groans, breaking away from their kiss. David turns Mack, lifting her dress up over her ass and pulling her bare skin back to his. He works his cock between her ass, savoring how she grinds her cheeks against him while he holds her tight by her stomach. He kisses her shoulder, tasting her warm, vanilla skin.
“Bend over.” He growls before she reaches between their bodies and holds his balls, stealing his breath. She rolls them over in her hand as she lays forward obediently. Her right cheek presses into the blanket she brought. David moves her dress up, pulling her thong underwear down for her ankles to hold. David strokes his cock as he puts two fingers at Mack’s entrance, testing her. She is soaked, almost dripping down those creamy thighs for him. He curses again, then plunges into her welcoming heat.
Mack’s arms stretch above her head, gripping the blanket in her palms. Her hard nipples stroke against the ridges of the truck bed with each direct thrust of him into her. David works his hands off her hips to the front of her thighs, keeping his hands there to protect her from the lip of the tailgate. His lips kiss her spine, then he get into position to fuck her hard and fast just like she begs for. The truck suspension squeaks from his powerful pumps.
“So good.” Mack calls back. She opens her eyes, taking in the surrounding Iowa wilderness, grinning at how sexy it is to be fucked by this man right here. Maybe she could be a country girl after all. She giggles.
“What?” He asks her.
“Maybe I am a country girl.”
“By the time I’m done with you, you will be.” He laughs, slapping her ass with his abdomen with each drill of his cock into her.
“Oh.” She groans, felling like a completely, coming undone mess at what he is doing with her. His unhooked belt slaps the outside of her thigh as it swings. She moves one hand from above her head, bringing it to her clit to roll it in rapid circles. “David…” She moans loudly, letting her voice go, carrying out across the field.
“Mmm, yeah. Let the world hear you baby. Let everyone know who’s pussy this belongs to.” He brings a hand under her stomach, arching her lower back and hips up so he can drive at a different angle. Mack’s eyes roll into the back of her head, almost securing to her brain at how incredible his cock feels pressing into her velvet circle.
“Right there. Davey, please don’t stop. Never stop.” Mack wails.
“Not until you coat this cock, sweetheart.” He assures her. “This what you wanted, huh? Made your man a little meal so he would stuff you full of his thick cock?”
“Yeah!” Mack admits shamelessly. “Ohmyg-“ Mack chokes on the last word as the intensity of her orgasm rips the breath from her lungs.
“Oh fuck. Baby yes.” He moans, losing control at the hard flutters of her around him. “So fucking good, baby. Perfect for me.” His hoarse voice coos at her as he paints ropes of cum on her walls.
Their heavy breathing makes them hot, sweat beginning to bead along their spines as they lay limply against each other on the truck bed. Then, David straightens up, gliding himself out of Mack gently. She whimpers at the emptiness, wishing he would stay there for a little longer. He delicately drops her dress back over her butt after bringing her panties up into place. She turns, leaning on the tailgate as her legs shake. David tucks himself back into his pants, buckling his belt before focusing back on her. He grips her chin with his thumb and pointer finger, giving her a soft, wet kiss.
“You are amazing.” He sighs. Mack grins into their kiss.
“You too. Never felt like this.” She whispers, holding him by the back of his neck against her forehead. Never thought she would admit things like this to someone either. But as per usually, David is scratching out all of her rules and rewriting new ones, like spending weeks in America’s heartland and turning down jobs from her editor.
“I’m starving. What did you bring us?” David asks, picking her up and setting her on the tailgate behind her so she can reach the picnic basket. She brought them turkey sandwiches with fresh lettuce, tomatoes, and homemade pesto mayo she put together yesterday afternoon. All the flavors have marinated deliciously together, creating a flavor bomb in her mouth.
“Holy shit. This is amazing. Thank you!” His genuine appreciation makes Mack’s chest warm. She smiles coyly, with her mouth full of food. He leans down to kiss her. Mack gently chews the rest of her bite, looking over at David who is devouring his sandwich is two more huge bites. She chuckles, then licks her lips before speaking.
“So Felix said today is a hard day for you?” Everything about David’s demeanor changes like a snap. His face darkens. He begins to fidget next to her, slightly pulling away as his body gets rigid. He sniffs, then takes a big glug of lemonade from the mason jar.
“Yeah.” Mack hesitates, remaining quiet while watching him stuff some chips in his mouth. Then she puts her sandwich down on the plate next to her, turning to sit facing him. She puts her hand on his thigh, continuing to stay quiet until David sighs heavily. “My mom died ten years ago today.” Mack stills, then rolls her bottom lip into her mouth.
“I’m so sorry.” David nods, clearing his throat.
“This date every year I come out here and fix fence and talk to her. Tell her about what I’ve been up to the last year. Cry a little bit. Then go clean off her and dad’s grave and put some fresh flowers down from her rose garden by the house.”
“That sounds like a nice way to honor her.” Mack murmurs, moving her hand from his thigh to his hand, lacing their fingers together. He brings the back of her hand up to his mouth, kissing along her knuckles.
“It is. Unfortunately, I’ve had ten years to get the tradition perfect.” He sighs. “Every year on this date though, it feels like it just happened.” Mack can imagine so. “Sucks.” He sniffs again. Mack rubs her thumb along the tendons of his hand.
“Will you tell me about her?”
“She was hilarious. Spunky as shit. Had to be with how crazy my siblings and I were in our younger days. We used to pretend to be super heroes and jump off the barn into the hay. It was all fun and games unless you were a bit off…. Or got pushed off like me.” Mack’s eyes widen. “But my mom was always watching out the window and would rip my brothers a new asshole anytime they were picking on me. She was strong and full of joy. She loved worked in her garden. A few of the plants have died off over the years cause of deep freezes, but most of those rose bushes are hers. I hire Felix’s wife to tend to them in the summer so they’re always taken care of. Mom would have wanted that, since she isn’t here to do it…”
Mack squeezes his hand then brings her other hand up to run over his back. She rests her mouth on his bicep, continuing to listen while holding him.
“I think that’s why it was so hard when she got sick.” His voices starts to get tight. Tears pinch Mack’s eyes. “That… but also she has missed so much. She didn’t get to see me graduate from high school or college. Didn’t see me get drafted or my first game in the NHL. At least my dad was there for those, but it wasn’t the same. He didn’t have the words like she would have when I struggled to stay up in the NHL those first few years or the way he rode my ass when I was home every summer to be a better farmer.” David shakes his head.
“It’s like every year something happens that I’m sad she isn’t here for. This year, I’m sad she doesn’t get to know you.” Mack’s bottom lip shakes as two tears go down her cheeks. He turns his lips into her hair, then continues to talk against her head. “She would have loved you- strong, independent, sassy, and so pretty you could bring even the most stubborn man to his knees.” Mack smiles, cupping his cheek to hold him against her. “Those dimples… baby.” He sighs, “they get me every time.”
“I hope she still likes me now… even from wherever she is watching over you.”
“I think so.” He smiles.
“Could I go with you to their resting place?”
“Yes, of course you can. I just gotta check the rest of this fence and then we can go.”
“Thank you for telling me. I didn’t know…”
“I know. I’m sorry. I don’t like talking about it. Probably why Felix told you.” Mack nods, understanding that Felix was looking out for David too when he told Mack about today on the drive down.
Mack and David finished their lunches and she helps him check fence. She walked the line with him and pointed out normal fence she thought looked bad and he taught her about what to look for instead. When they were done, they loaded up into David’s truck, then drove back towards the house.
The house is just comes into view when David peels off to the right and drives to an open unassuming field. There is no fencing, just in ground stones that mark the Carlson members that are buried on the farm. David grabs a bucket full of cleaning supplies. He gives Mack the flowers he picked earlier that had been resting in a bucket of water, then takes her hand to walk over to his parents grave.
Mack begins to cry immediately, feeling so overwhelmed with sadness for David. And his parents. For everything they have missed. For the people she will never know. For all the moments that David will never get to have with them and how fucking cruel it is that he has to go through that for the rest of his life. All those happy days will have a shade of grey because of who is missing. It’s not fair. She wants to change that for him, ease some of that, but instead, all she can really do is cry sympathetically.
When they get to his father, Charles E. Carlson’s headstone, David drops her hand and puts his work gloves on. He uses his tools to cut away the over grown grass and weeds. Then he grabs the soapy water and rags to clean the dirty away from the head stone. Mack kneels off to the side, by his mother’s stone, watching quietly, sensing her help is not wanted. This seems methodical and therapeutic to David.
He rests his butt on his heels while he looks down. He presses his palm on his dad’s name, then works his way to his mom’s and does the same thing. This time, wet tear drops fall from his eyes onto the dusty stone as he cleans the grime off. Mack swallows hard, new tears of her own falling down. David puts his left hand on his mother’s name, Beatrice. Mack reaches out, putting hers on top of his. David opens his right arm for her to slide into his side. Then he holds her close.
Mack doesn’t know, but while he holds her tight, David is telling his mom, where ever she is resting, that the girl in his arms is the one.

Mack can’t believe it is her second to last night here.
As different as it all was when she first got here a month ago, her and David have settled into a nice routine. Every morning starts early, with a romp in the sheets. Sometimes fast, sometimes slow, always incredible though. After that, Mack wanders down in his shirt to make him coffee and some eggs to wolf down fast after his shower. She sits with him at the table as he tells her all the different chores he has for the day. She asks questions. He patiently answers.
Then, after a long smooch with wandering calloused hands, he heads out to the field. Mack will meet him for lunch, or if it’s too hot, he comes into the kitchen to take a break in the air conditioning. They spend 10 minutes of his hour long lunch eating and the other 50 devouring each other. On the tail gate, on the kitchen table, on the kitchen floor, on the couch- wherever they can make it to before their clothes start falling to the floor.
David will return back to his chores, then come home around dinner time. Him and Mack trade off making dinner. He likes to grill for her as she tries different self- prepared marinades with fresh produce from the farm’s garden. Then they end the night watching the sunset on the front porch, which is where they are right now.
The porch swing sways gently from David’s light rocking. A calm, cooling breeze blows through the wrap around porch that hugs the white farmhouse his family built generations ago. Mack thinks about her flight in two days that is supposed to connect her with Newark before she will turn around in 24 hours to head towards Aruba. Dread pinches her stomach uncomfortably. She has started to fall in love with this place and all of it’s differences that she hated 4 weeks ago. David is staying here for two more weeks. He would be returning to New York a few days after she gets home from Aruba.
Mack looks down at his forearm across her stomach. Her fingers tips drag along his tanned skin, watching the goosebumps form on him from her touch. An emotional sigh falls from her lips. His lips touch her hair in recognition, fingers pressing deeper into her side.
“You okay?”
“I don’t want to leave.” She confesses. He moves so her back falls across his lap. His other arm catches her head in the cook of his elbow. “Wanna stay here with you.” She whispers, reaching up for his face.
“Baby, if you wanna stay you can, but if you need to go, that’s okay too. There is a whole life of yours outside of me.”
“I know. But it can wait until I’m ready to rejoin it.” David smiles down at her. His fingers run up from her stomach, along her left breast, to cup her cheek. Mack presses up to meet his lips. His hand tangles in her wild, country hair, gripping her tight to his mouth so he can taste her thoroughly.
“You’re sure? I don’t want you to feel like you have to stay here.”
“I don’t.” She assures him, gripping his wrist where that hand still holds her face. His thumb rubs a track across her cheek bone, looking into her brown eyes.
“Okay. Then stay. I want that.” He admits. “Was feeling really sad in the field this morning, thinking about driving you up to the airport.” Mack smiles, nodding in agreement. He pulls her up to kiss him again, then lets her head settle in his lap as she wiggles down. Her hair splays across his thigh as he works his finger prints gently into her scalp. Her eyes flutter, wanting to close and give into how good this feels.
Mack loves the salty breeze off the ocean, the sand between her toes, and the way the pace of island life is unapologetically slow.
But not even that can compete with how good it feels here in David’s arms on his front porch swing.

“Do you think they’re going to build them taller?”
“I don’t see how they could, darlin. Already called skyscrapers for a reason.”
“Always something new, isn’t there?” Joel huffs at that, patting his jacket pocket before seeming to remember that his watch is on his wrist now rather than a chain, glancing down at the time before circling his arm around her waist to keep her moving along the sidewalk.
“Come on, I’d like to get this done sooner rather than later.”
Chicago, the perfect city to shore up their funds for a quick decade before they move on to their next spot. Though she isn’t too keen on the method Joel has decided on to accomplish this, she supposes there aren’t many ways for them to make a quick dime in the dark. This will do.
They’ve become all too familiar with what a green door means in this booming, buzzing city. The underground, the slip through the cracks, the underbelly of a politic perfectly corrupt. They fit right in amongst the flowing liquor and downturned fedoras, a culture of anonymity and discretion. Joel keeps his arm tight around her sequined waist as they slip into the back of the bar, a cozy table of suits and smoke grinning at them as they come near.
“Miller! Aren’t you a sight for sore eyes! Now why are you bringing a nice broad like that into an establishment like this, huh? A beautiful girl like that shouldn’t step foot outside the Magnificent Mile if you ask me.” The men all erupt into a gruff chorus of laughter, and though Joel’s face stays schooled and still, she can feel the way his fingers curl just a little tighter around her hip.
“Jones, we’re just here on business, if that’s alright with you.” Jones, the man sitting in the middle of the ring of men, takes a long puff off his cigar, squinting at Joel as he huffs the smoke out through his nostrils. Her stomach churns with the smell and the sight.
“Ah, Miller, always so serious. Do me a favor and lighten up, would ya? Laugh a little every now and then.”
“Ha. Ha. I took care of the business you asked me to and I’d like to follow up on the payment we discussed.” The easy grin on Jones’ face finally slips into a stony grimace as Joel pulls a handful of rings out of his pocket, throwing each one down onto the table one at a time.
“Carmichael.” He had a sour taste, too much booze in his veins for her liking.
“Stilson.” He cried like a baby, begged her to convince her lover to spare him. Joel let her have the first taste.
“Matthews.” He was a runner, all that stress turning him bitter on her tongue.
“And Ricci.” Sweet and unsuspecting, he had been her favorite.
“Well, Miller, you sure know how to get a job done. What was the number we agreed on? Two per head?”
“Three, Jones. It was three.” Jones lets out a clipped laugh, stubbing out his cigar and snapping his fingers, one of his men scrambling out of his seat and through a back door, ostensibly to get them their money.
“Nothing gets by you, eh, Miller? You know the offer still stands, someone as capable as yourself would do well under the family name.” The man is back in a flash, setting a leather briefcase down on the table while Jones continues to eye her man.
“Just the payment is fine, Jones. You mind if I?” Jones shrugs as if to say be my guest, Joel’s arm leaving her waist as he steps forward to snap open the briefcase. It’s a breathtaking thing, seeing all that money stacked up inside.
“Always true to my word, aren’t I? Now that business is handled, why don’t you and your lady sit down and stay a while? Share a drink, a smoke, after all it’s only polite.” She can see the tick in Joel’s jaw, the way his knuckles turn white at his sides. But she also knows that they need to keep this man and his grunts happy, at least for now, so she steps in before he can get them in trouble.
“That is awfully kind of you, isn’t it, baby?” Her hand on his chest, a soothing circle as she looks up at him. Keep your mouth shut and follow my lead. Mercifully, he does, letting her tug him into the booth, Jones on her left as he slips in on her right.
“You certainly are a sweet thing, aren’t you? Tell me this, honey, what’s a nice gal like you doing with a man like Miller? No offense, son.” Jones huffs out a wheezing laugh, his jowls shaking with it as Joel’s face sets into a dark scowl. She lets out a bright peel of laughter from somewhere high in her throat, her hand slipping under the table to grip Joel’s thigh tightly, steadying and stilling the impending storm brewing beneath his brow.
By some stroke of luck, they make it through a polite drink, she doing all the talking, bullshitting as Joel broods beside her. She thinks they’re going to make it out of it without a hitch, but that comes crashing down as they’re slipping back out of the booth, a hand that isn’t her man’s coming down hard on her ass, making her yelp and stumble on her feet and right into Joel’s chest.
“I’m sorry, honey, just couldn’t help myself when you look so–” Jones doesn’t get to finish that thought, cutting himself off with a gut wrenching scream as Joel closes his fist around the man’s hand until a sickening crunch can be heard.
And then it’s a flash. These things always are. Perhaps the one good thing about places like these is that most folks skip out fast when shit hits the fan, leaving her and Joel with only a modest meal when all is said and done.
“I ain’t drinking from him. Fucking bastard.” Crumpled over in the booth, what had been Jones's face is now a broken mess from being slammed against the table repeatedly. She clicks her tongue at the sight.
“Baby, you shouldn’t have done that. He wasn’t worth it, and now we’re going to have to move because of him. And my dress is ruined.” Joel traces his fingers along the delicate beading of her slip, now stained and soaked red.
“I’m sorry, my darlin. But any man who disrespects you deserves exactly what he’s got coming to him. Besides, we’ve made enough money here, can get out of this damn town and go wherever you like.” She hums at that, thumbing away a trickle of red on his chin and sucking it into her mouth.
“Italy?” His face screws up, but he eventually nods with a huff, draping an abandoned fur coat around her shoulders to hide the mess that’s been made of her dress.
“Fine. Suppose getting out of the states for a while could be a good thing.” Liking the sound of that, she smacks a quick kiss to his lips before grabbing his hand that isn’t holding the briefcase and leading them out of the bar and onto the humming Chicago streets.
Still not used to it, they startle with every passing pair of headlights, Joel tipping the brim of his fedora down and tucking her under his arm. A miracle to most, all this light in the night has been nothing but a nuisance to them, though they manage to slink through alleyways back to their hotel relatively unscathed.
“I need a bath, I smell like smoke and liquor.” One invention she can appreciate, hot water at her fingertips any time, day or night. She watches the clawfoot tub fill up, steam rising against the window, muddling the blinking lights of the city outside. His palms skate along her bare arms, up to her shoulders, thumbs digging in just right to the muscles there, unraveling her with a sigh.
“All this skin on display. The times have certainly changed.”
“You don’t like it?” She turns in his hold, finding him out of his suit jacket, suspenders hanging loose around his hips, tie undone and shirt unbuttoned.
“Oh I like it just fine. But I’m pretty sure every other man on the street likes it as well.”
“It’s women’s liberation, baby. Get used to it. First the right to vote, next, the world.” He chuckles, a sound soaked in fondness as he tucks his knuckles under her chin, a small tilt to slot his mouth against hers.
“I am sorry, darlin. Lost my head back there. Just never want anything bad to cross you like that.”
“I know, Joel. And I forgive you. But I’m a tough girl. I can hold my own just fine.” Another kiss, her hand cupping his jaw, thumb stroking along his cheek when he rests his forehead against hers.
“Oh I know. Tough as nails, darlin. One of the things I like most about you.” The curve of his grin, quick and close against her skin. She tugs on his slicked back hair, bringing his gaze back to hers.
“Come on, baby. Let’s get cleaned up.” Quiet, reverential hands peel away each piece of clothing, Joel paying particular attention to her stockings, kneeling down to slip them off her feet, a kiss to each thigh as he does. He sinks into the bath first, water already tinging pink with the remnants of their soured night as he holds out his palm for her. She groans as she sinks down in front of him, the warmth kneading out any residual tension in her muscles, her head tipping back onto his shoulder as she settles against his chest.
“You didn’t have much to drink, darlin.”
“Hmm, that’s because they all tasted like that hooch they brew in bathtubs. And I thought it was bad when that stuff was legal.” Joel hums, a low sound she can feel through her spine as his lips drop against her shoulder.
“Could order room service, if you want.”
“I wouldn’t say no to it.” They get cleaned up, scrubbing away what’s left of the night, skin staying warm and damp as they putter about the room, Joel dialing the lobby to order something up. One of the perks of these swanky hotels, champagne imported from overseas, not brewed in bathtubs.
She sits on the edge of the bed, dressing robe tied loosely around her waist, drawing open in the front just a little too much as Joel lets the bellhop in with a bottle and a bucket of ice. The tips of the boy’s ears pinken when he looks at her, quickly averting his gaze as Joel directs him to set the things down on the coffee table in the corner. She smiles brightly at the boy, though she’d rather be looking at her man, his hair still damp and slicked back, dressed only in that dark green robe of his, only a sliver of his bare chest on display with the way it’s tied.
“She’s pretty, ain’t she?” Caught staring at her, the boy jumps when Joel claps a large hand to his shoulder. She can see the nervous bob of his throat.
“I– yes, sir, very pretty. Now if you don’t need anything else I’ll be–”
“If you think she’s so pretty, why don’t you take a closer look?” Not giving him any time to answer, Joel’s already shoving the boy forward to stand in front of her, his hand on his shoulder forcing him to bend over so he’s face to face with her.
“Tell her how pretty you think she is, boy.” She can practically see the jump of the boy’s pulse in that soft hinge beneath his jaw, her mouth starting to water at the sight.
“You– you’re very pretty, m-miss.” Pink, pink, pink, a perfect flush blooming in his cheeks. She can’t help but smack her lips looking at him.
“That’s very sweet, honey, thank you.” She leans forward, her robe opening even more as she presses a fluttering kiss to the boy’s cheek, feeling that beat, that pump beneath her lips even there, like a bird battering against its cage. A sweet drag of her mouth down finds that flickering spot, tendons jumping beneath her lips. Joel still holds the boy still for her, though she doesn’t think he’d stray far with the way he’s ogling her. Teeth, all teeth, that sweet snap of skin, and then a deep, warm pull.
“Good?”
“Mm, sober. You want some?”
“That’s alright, darlin. Have your fill.” She does, her limbs going languid in the satisfaction of it, sitting back with a sigh when she’s finished as Joel drags the body into the bathroom.
“Please don’t tell me you’re going to leave that in the bathtub all night. Joel, the smell.” He sighs, shaking his head, though he’s already reaching for the telephone. One of the only benefits of the work he’s been doing, no one bats an eye when he needs a body disposed of.
Rolling back her shoulders and licking her lips, she stands with a contented hum, pulling her robe closer around her as she picks up the bottle and steps out onto the balcony. Lights in the sky, loud dazzling explosions of color every night. She has to admit to herself that she’ll miss it, just a little.
“There’s a ship leaving from New York to Venice in five days. We’ll catch a sleeper tomorrow night and stay in the city until then.” She hums at his words, popping open the bottle of champagne with an easy snap and pouring into the two glasses he holds out for her.
“To Venice then.” A clink of delicate crystal, his grin over the glittering rim of his glass, lighting up in the bursting flashes of fireworks in the sky.
“To Venice.” She leans her hip against the railing, watching him watching the lights, quick pinpricks of gold bursting in his dark eyes. It’s impulse, instinct to reach out for him, taking his chin in her hand to coax his gaze onto her.
“We’ll be okay, won’t we?” He sighs, setting his glass down on the railing to cup her face in both his hands.
“Of course we will, darlin. Gonna make sure of it. It’s just– it’s a different world. Always changing. Gotta learn how to change with it.” A simple press of his lips to hers seals his words, and suddenly, the boom and burst of the fireworks seems far away, muted as they look at each other.
“It’s certainly more complicated. Sometimes I miss it, you know? Just us and a pair of horses and nothing but the plains.”
“I do too, darlin. But those days are gone. The west ain’t the west anymore. Reckon there’ll be skyscrapers even in California before too long.” It’s a small, bitter pang, the way time passes around them, though what remains, him and her, is enough to soothe that ache in her chest.
“But it’s you and me forever, right?”
“That’s right, darlin. Forever.” The kiss he pulls her into demands a little more, his tongue sliding along her lip, opening her up to him as he presses her back against the railing. Her elbow knocks the bottle clean over the balcony, sending it sailing down to the street below with a startling crash, people shrieking at the surprise. Joel just laughs, looking over her shoulder to watch the bodies slinking by in the night.
“Look at them all, darlin. Not too long ago not a soul would be out at this time of night. And now it’s all lit up and everyone has somewhere to be.” Before she can crane her neck over her shoulder to take a look, he’s spinning her around by her waist, pressing her front up against the railing, her hands gripping the banister as he nips at her neck.
“But we know the night better than any of them, don’t we? Me and my angel and the moon.” He must be drunk, just a touch. Off the men he drained at the speakeasy no doubt, his words loose and his hands grabby, rucking up her robe to let it pool over her hips, leaving her bare from the waist down.
“My darlin, all mine, watch all those people for me. All those people that would die to have you. But they can’t, huh? Only me, you and me.” His one hand slips around her waist, palm coming to rest heavy over the swell of one of her breasts, holding her steady as his other hand guides his cock through the heat of her cunt, a slick, simpering drag that makes her preen into his touch. Her moan is silenced by another shattering boom in the sky, Joel’s hips pressing against the curve of her ass in one languid stroke, fractured stars crumbling in the inky darkness.
“Fuck, Joel, so good. Fill me up so good, baby.” His teeth, that sweet slip of pain sinking into the muscle wrapped over her shoulder, holding her still as he grinds his hips against hers. It’s fast and hard, his groans silenced into her skin, her eyes wide and glinting with the continued rain of fire in the sky, fizzles and pops so bright. His hands everywhere, squeezing at her breasts, slipping down to grab her ass to fuck her hips back onto him, and all she can do is dig her nails into the banister, pleasure pooling and flaring up her spine.
“That’s it, darlin. Always so good for me. Taking it all, huh? You want it, don’t you?” He tilts her chin around to steal a slanted kiss, teeth nicking each other’s lips, swallowing up each other’s sighs.
“Yes, Joel. Want all of it. Give it to me, baby. Let me have it.” He must be drunker than she thought, because just as soon as the words whine from her throat his hips are stuttering stop against her ass, his groan flushing out against her neck. Usually so attentive, so careful to snap up her pleasure before his own, he doesn’t leave her disappointed for long, sinking down onto his knees behind her, his palms gripping her ass to spread her open and let his tongue drag a harsh line through her cunt.
“Taste so good together, darlin. Open up for me, just like that, let me have you.” He’s already dipping back in, lips wrapping around her clit and sucking hard as his nose notches at her fluttering entrance. She can only feel the thrum of his satisfied groans, the sound getting drowned out by the endless smattering of fireworks still crackling in the sky. He takes and takes and takes, tongue insistent and sloppy in the way he laps at her. And as the pleasure starts to snarl a little brighter, her spine curls, hunching over the railing, her eyes glazing over the street below. Glittering girls glinting in all that flickering electricity and men hidden beneath the dark brims of their hats, the world passing by as she unravels on her lover’s tongue.
His palms smooth up and down her spine, mouth resting hot and open over the swell of her ass before his teeth sink in, making her laugh as she reaches around to tug at his hair, pulling him up and up until his arms are wrapping around her waist and his chin is hitched over her shoulder. A slow sway side to side, the last fizzling lights in the sky followed by the slow peel of sound from a sorrowful trumpet in the folds of this sleepless city.
“So tomorrow night?” “Mmhmm. We’ll get packed up and head to the station at dusk. But let’s get some sleep first, darlin. Sun’s gonna be up soon.” One more kiss before she turns in his hold, both of them slinking back inside, shuttering the balcony door tight, closing the drapes to darken and dampen the world outside. She glances into the bathroom, body already taken care of, just like Joel said. They leave their robes in a silken slump on the floor, slipping into bed, bodies bare and slack, sleep finding them easy.
And down on the streets below, morning begins to cut through the smog, the sun filtering through alleys and onto the sidewalks. A young boy, clothes and face ashen with soot, sets down a crate on the stoop of the hotel, worn shoes stepping on top, a bundle of newspaper tucked under his thin arm. He clears his throat, once, twice, taking off his flat cap and waving it in the air, a herald for the dawn.
“Extra extra! Top mob spot hit by vicious animal attack! Another body dredged from the river! Police puzzled by pernicious puncture wounds! What evil lurks beneath the streets of Chicago and will it strike again?”

Star Child Part 3
In which we learn a little backstory about why Eddie was so resistant to playing with Steve and that the Harringtons are so so much worse.
Part 1 Part 2
*
Eddie woke up alone with the worst hangover and if his day couldn’t get any worse there was someone banging on his door.
“Hold on, damn it,” Eddie mumbled, stumbling to the door.
He threw it open to see all three of his bandmates standing there, looking far too chipper for this ungodly hour.
“What do you want?” he bit out.
“Someone struck out,” Jeff teased.
“How could you possibly strike out,” Gareth hissed, “when the dude was practically throwing himself at you?”
“What. Do. You. Want?” Eddie asked through gritted teeth.
“We wanted to see if you wanted to go for breakfast before head out of town?” Brian said.
Eddie closed his eyes. “Yeah, just give me fifteen minutes, I still need to pack up.”
They all nodded and Eddie slammed the door in their faces. He realized he didn’t have any of his stuff. He looked around the room frantically before his cell phone went off, announcing its presence on the table.
Eddie let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding. He unlocked the screen as he pocketed the keys and wallet.
-I hope the hangover isn’t too terrible this morning.
Eddie grinned and typed out his reply.
-Doing better now that I’ve heard from you.
-Glad to hear it. Sorry I didn’t stay, I had an early morning radio show to do this morning.
Okay, Eddie thought, that was a valid reason. Still made him grumpy.
-Why would you do something that early in the morning?
-I take it you’re not a morning person?
Eddie huffed out a laugh.
-I’m barely a person before noon.
-lol. You doing anything later today?
Eddie pulled his hair in front of his face and sighed.
-On the way to Chicago, we’ve got a concert tomorrow night
Eddie stared at the three little dots for what felt like forever before the message filled up his screen.
-Damn. I was really hoping you’d come with me when I went to visit the children’s hospital this afternoon. The kids would have been over the moon. But if you have a gig, that’s fine.
Eddie had the feeling that Steve was floundering on the other end of the phone.
-Yeah sorry. Being from Hawkins and considered the town freaks makes us not want to stick around. But you do you man.
-Yeah I hear that. My own experience with the town is pretty shit too. I feel I have to give back after being the little shit I was when I was in school.
Eddie paused. Yeah. He knew all about that.
-Making up for being the school bully the reason you did last night’s concert?
Eddie had finished packing all his shit up and patted his pockets, making sure his keys and wallet were still there by the time he got a response from Steve.
He opened the door when his phone trilled in his hand.
-In part, yeah. Calling kids queer or fag when you are bisexual is the worst kind of dick move I can think of.
Eddie slumped against the door frame staring at his phone.
Shit.
-You’re pulling my chain, right?
Suddenly his phone was ringing.
“Yeah?” Eddie answered.
“Hey,” Steve murmured. “I’m really not pulling your chain. I swear on it.”
“Holy shit, man,” Eddie said. “Who knows?”
“You, my parents, my agent, my manager, my record label,” Steve muttered.
“That’s why you’re parents wanted you committed, isn’t it?” Eddie asked.
Steve hummed. “They tried conversion therapy first. It’s where I met my best friend and manager, Robin. We escaped and she took over as my manager. My parents tried to sue the courts to say I was crazy, but when I told them that would have to say why they wanted me committed, they dropped it.”
“Fuck, man.” He looked at his watch. “I’ve got to go. So if you still want to chat, text me, okay?”
“I’ve got to go, too,” Steve whispered. “I know you don’t have any reason not to tell anyone about me. About what I said. But...can it wait a year? My contract with my label will be up and it won’t matter after that.”
“What?” Eddie squeaked. “No, man. I’m not going to out you. Shit. You do you. Come out when you feel comfortable, okay?”
Steve let out a shuddering breath. “Thank you. Drive safe.”
“Yeah, and tell those kiddies, Uncle Eddie says hello, k?”
Steve laughed. “Will do.”
They said their goodbyes and Eddie slipped into the elevator, feeling like his whole world had just bottomed out.
*
Eddie slept off his hangover in the tour bus. They were about half way to Chicago when he woke up.
“He lives!” Jeff said from the table where the rest of the band was playing cards.
“Fuck off,” Eddie grumbled. He grabbed a water bottle and some aspirin. He swallowed the pills and came to sit next to Gareth.
“You still in denial about Pretty Boy Stevie?” Brian asked.
Eddie threw his head back and rested it on the back cushion. “I don’t even know anymore, man. I have this image of him in my head from high school and shit, I don’t know.”
“Well he’s certainly got us convinced he’s a pretty cool dude,” Jeff said. And began ticking off the reasons on his fingers. “He writes all his own music, plays guitar and piano, that arrangement of ‘Low Key in Love’ was bitching as hell, man. And that’s just the stuff I saw. That’s not even the stuff we were hearing from the people close to him.”
“Yeah,” Gareth agreed. “You can always tell the fakes from the real stand up dudes from how their people talk about them. The sound guy at the venue said Steve offered to give him a ride home, because his car broke down.”
“Even gave him money to get it fixed or replaced,” Jeff said.
“The night was filled with other stories like that,” Brian agreed. “It looks like he’s honestly trying to give back to the town. Which is amazing, by the way.”
Eddie sighed. “You guys were sophomores when Steve was still at Hawkins High, right?”
The three of them looked at each other at the strange non-sequitur.
“Yeah,” Gareth said. “So?”
Eddie licked his lips before pressing them together. “Did you ever run afoul the popular seniors’ group?”
Jeff scoffed. “No. We were too insignificant.”
“Lucky you,” Eddie dead panned.
“Oh shit,” Brian said. “You’re saying Steve bullied in at school?”
Eddie sighed. “Stood by and watched was more like, but yeah. The Kings were a good name for those assholes.”
“Fuck, man,” Jeff muttered.
They were silent for a moment before Brian looked up at him. “Did–did you ever meet Steve’s dad?”
Eddie scoffed. “Once, but I was too drunk to remember it. But from what I’ve been hearing lately, I want to reach down his throat and pull out his blackened shriveled heart out through his mouth.”
Brian raised an eyebrow. “Nah, that would be too good for the asshole.” He bit his lip. “I honestly don’t know how Steve survived let alone became as big as he is.”
Eddie frowned.
Jeff and Brian shared a glance.
“My older sister used to run with some of the cheerleaders when she was on the drill team,” Jeff said. “She was pretty sure Mr Harrington was beating him when he was in town. Which, admittedly wasn’t often, but it was enough that you could sense a pattern.”
“Holy shit,” Eddie whispered.
Gareth sighed. “We aren’t saying this to excuse what Steve did in high school but it seems to me that he was dealing with some shit you know?”
Eddie sighed. “Still is, apparently.”
They all stared at him in shock.
He half shrugged, tilting his head. “I don’t know, he’s told me some pretty heavy stuff. Like career ending stuff. He trusted me and I really don’t know what to do with that.”
“Sounds to me,” Gareth said, “like he’s trying to make amends but doesn’t know how.”
Eddie’s lip quivered. “I think I like him. Like a lot.”
“Well, you’ve got time I think,” Jeff said. “Deciding what to do with that. I mean we’re still on tour for the next two months and his manager, Robin was saying that Steve was getting ready to go into the studio for his last album. He’ll be in LA about the time of our last concert. If you still feel that way about him by then ask him out.”
Eddie blinked. “Yeah, okay.”

What If Steve Were To Leave Hawkins? Part 4
Part 1 Part 2 Part 3
I wasn't originally going to write about Dustin's reaction but @doubleb11 gave me the idea. I hope it meets your expectations! We go back to Steve's POV in Chicago in the next part. Thank you again for everyone's nice comments!
~*~*~*~
It was no secret that Dustin was struggling. He tried to remain hopeful and upbeat but his insecurities made maintaining a positive attitude difficult. Why would Steve leave? He had promised that he would always be there for Dustin. But so had his deceased grandparents and his dad that left without so much as a goodbye.
The common denominator had to be Dustin. He knew that he was too sarcastic, too smart to be relatable, and kind of annoying. But he thought Steve understood. He’s always had trouble connecting with people but he thought that Steve was a lifelong friend, an older brother, if you will, that would never drift away. Since the time Steve gave him poor dating advice while looking for Dart, they had been best friends. So why would he leave?
Looking back, he could see why Steve might have underestimated his own importance to the Party. All of its members were a bit emotionally repressed and didn’t know how to talk about their feelings. They all tended to show their love through acts of service or quality time instead of words of affirmation. They did show their love and he thought Steve understood their feelings. But still, if Steve needed verbal validation, he didn’t get any. And Dustin had been a bit too preoccupied talking to Suzie to spend time with him, instead using the excuse of needing a ride to get in his regular amount of ‘Steve-time’. Regardless of his reasons, he felt guilty and useless when it came to searching for the older boy.
It had been a mere two days since they had all found out about Steve’s leave and it was already affecting Dustin. When he wasn’t pretending to be okay, throwing a tantrum, or worrying about Steve’s well-being, he was ignoring the glances cast in his direction by the other Party members. Eddie had given him a ride to Mike’s for DnD and had tried to ask how he was doing. Dustin pretended to not hear the question and thanked him for the ride. Lucas had asked him if Steve had reached out yet. No, why would he? Dustin probably caused him to leave. Max and El asked if he was alright since he was quieter than usual. No, stop talking to him. Mike and Will avoided asking him questions but their concerned gazes were just as annoying. He was fine.
Who cares that his pseudo-older brother left without talking to him just like his deadbeat dad? Not him.
Joyce gave him a ride home from Mike’s when she picked up Will. She assured him that Hopper was doing everything he could to find Steve and that they’d have him home in no time. Dustin couldn’t find it himself to believe her. He just thanked her for the ride and made his way inside. He just wanted a night alone without anyone checking on him or bringing up Steve.
His mom was waiting for him in the kitchen and gave him a gentle smile when he walked in. “How was your game, Dusty?”
Dustin sighed. He wasn't in the mood to talk but his mom wasn’t aware of the situation and she certainly didn’t deserve any of his snark. “Hi mom, it was fun. Will is DM’ing again and Eddie has been giving him pointers. He was ruthless today.”
She hummed and pinched his cheek when she handed him the plate she had saved him from dinner. “Oh goodness, I almost forgot! Your friend Steve called to talk to you. I told him that you were with Mike today. He didn’t leave a message but you might want to call him later, okay Dusty? He sounded a little strange.”
“STEVE CALLED?” Dustin practically screamed as he whipped around in his seat, the bread roll propelling from his hand into a kitchen cabinet.
His mother looked slightly alarmed but also woefully accustomed to his flamboyant antics. “Yes, Dusty. Don’t throw food, what did that dinner roll ever do to you?”
Dustin’s eyes rolled hard. “I’m sorry. You said Steve called? What did he say? Was he okay? Was he in distress?”
“No, he sounded a bit tired but that’s our Steve. He just asked for you and didn’t have a message to leave once I told him you were out. He will probably call back sometime later tonight or tomorrow sometime.”
Dustin felt his eyes fill with tears and his bottom lip started to quiver. Steve had tried to talk to him and he wasn’t there. What if he was hurt or in danger and Dustin was too busy playing make-believe to take his call? He would never forgive himself.
“Dusty? Oh no, honey! What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” His mother fretted over him and her concern is what pushed him over the edge.
Dustin burst into big, fat, ugly tears. He sobbed into his mother’s embrace and cried out his feelings of worry, sadness, and angered abandonment. His mom cooed over him and pet her hand through his unstyled curls until he found the strength to speak.
“Mom, Steve left. He just left Hawkins without telling anyone. He’s missing and we don’t know how to find him! And now he called and I wasn’t there! What if he’s hurt and he called me to help him? He left because I was a bad friend and now he’s gone! We can’t even find a way to bring him back.” Dustin wailed through sullied tears.
Claudia whispered words of comfort and encouragement as she held her sad boy in her arms. “Dusty, he sounded fine. I’m sure he was just calling to check in on you and tell you where he is. I don’t know why he would leave so suddenly but I doubt it was because of you, Dusty.”
“No mom, it was me! He’s been distant and sad for weeks and I told the Party to give him space. Me! I said that. I told them to leave him alone and no one checked in on him. I never even told him what he meant to me. What if he never comes back, mom? He’ll never know how much we love him!”
Claudia was confused with this whole situation. She’s known Steve for nearly three years now and has been nothing but impressed by the older boy. He helped her care for her little Dusty while she was at work or her book clubs. Steve didn’t have a selfish bone in his body, always refusing to take her money for babysitting and relinquishing his free time to drive her admittedly needy son around. It doesn’t make any sense for Steve to abandon the kids he helped raise, the kids who counted on him a fair amount, to leave town out of nowhere. The young man that she knew would never knowingly cause such distress in her little Dusty or his friends.
“Dusty, I think Steve is dealing with something beyond you or the rest of your friends. He might need some time to work on it but he will be back and he knows how much he means to you. Just give him time. He called today and the next time he calls, I’ll take a message. Alright? Everything will be fine.”
God, he hoped his mom was right about this. Dustin did feel better at her words but there was still a seed of doubt in his mind. Unfortunately, there was nothing else he could do about the situation until Hopper tracked Steve down or until Steve reached out again. For now, he would wait for his best friend to call again and alert the Party to give them the update. For now, he would have hope.

Ya know how the Gallaghers have a piano in their house? Could you please write a request where Gallagher sister oc/reader taught herself to play piano over the years and eventually gets into the Chicago Symphony Orchestra? Thank you✌️
Untitled
Word Count: 828
Pairings: OC!Gallagher! Reader x Gallaghers
Synopsis: As the fourth oldest Gallagher, Joanna thought she wouldn’t get anywhere in life after graduating. That is until a special letter comes.
Warnings: None
A/N: Wasn’t sure how to end this one. It’s kinda a short one. Hope you enjoy!
Masterlist
-------------------
I’ve always loved music. Since I was tall enough to reach the piano, I would try to play it. Not many people in my family know how to play the piano. Fiona and Lip know a small bit, but Frank is the one who knows it the best.
I’ve played the piano in the school orchestra since 5th grade. In those years, I’ve participated in competitions and won many of them as well. With it being the middle of senior year, I decided to apply to some orchestras and universities.
Ever since I was young, it has been my dream to join the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. They were the first Orchestra I auditioned for.  I also applied to the University of Chicago. I’m not very smart like my brother, Lip, but I thought it would be a better chance at doing something with my life if I applied to colleges instead of only orchestras.
I’ve always felt like an outcast in my family of outcasts. I didn’t tell anyone I auditioned and applied to stuff because I don’t want to get their hopes up.
Timeskip
It’s been almost 5 months since I auditioned for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I’ve already gotten rejection letters from the colleges and smaller orchestras, so I’m not going to be surprised when I get rejected from this one too.
With it being the middle of June, my high school graduation is coming up in a few days. I still haven’t told anyone about what I’m doing after I graduate because I’m still not sure myself.
While sitting on the couch, Fiona gets home from work and sits next to me. “Graduation is two days away. What are you planning to do after?” She asks me. I knew this conversation was coming. She had the same one with Lip and Ian.
“I already have a job lined up. I start in a week.” I told her. I decided to get a job since I don’t know what I’m going to do.
“OK, that's good.” Fiona gets up and goes upstairs.
Two days Later
Today is the day I’m finally graduating. All my family is here, except for Frank of course. I’m standing in line waiting for my name to be called. There's only a few people in front of me. I’m getting nervous as I approach the stage. Only two people are in front of me now. I don’t know why I’m so nervous.
One person is in front of me. I feel like throwing up. “Joanna Gallagher.” My name gets called. I walk on the stage with my eyes wide. The principal hands me my diploma and I walk away. I don’t bother sticking around for the end, I just run to my family.
“I’m so proud of you.” Fiona whispers in my ear as she hugs me. I can feel the rest of them hugging me as well. “ Let’s go home and celebrate!” Fiona says to everyone.
When we get home, I go up to Debbie and I’s room to change. With the room being so small, we have to sleep on bunk beds.
After changing, I go back downstairs and notice Fiona and Lip on the couch looking at something. I don’t see anyone else, so I assume they went to get party supplies.
“What are you guys doing?” I ask them. They jump off the couch and Lip puts something behind his back. “What are you two hiding?” I step closer to them.
“We should be asking what you’re hiding Jo.” Lip says. I freeze. Did they find out about the colleges I didn’t get into? Did they find out about my audition for the orchestra?
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” They can tell when I’m hiding something. My face gets all red and my eyes go wide when I am hiding something.
“We’re not mad at you.” Fiona takes a paper that Lip had behind his back. “ You should probably read this.” She hands the paper to me and they both go to the kitchen.
As I read the paper, I start to tear up.
Dear Ms. Joanna Gallagher,
We are pleased to say you have been accepted to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. We were very pleased by your audition. If possible, we would love to have you play as our main pianist.
I didn’t bother to read any further. Tears were streaming down my face as I got up and started jumping around. “I got in! I got in!” I was screaming. Fiona and Lip walked back into the living room and watched me. When I stopped, I noticed Fiona was crying too.
“Fi, why are you crying?” I asked.
“It’s just happy tears. We finally got a Gallagher to achieve something great.”
“It’s about time, too.” Lip said, joining the conversation.
I laugh as I hug both of them. ”Thank you guys for everything.” I tell them. “Without you two, I wouldn’t have gotten anywhere.”

Heavy bass is vibrating through your chest as Corroded Coffin finished the last song of the night. It was the first time in four years you had stayed up past 9:30 on a weeknight outside the comfort of your house. Wayne had begged to keep Willow for the night, going on about wanting to ring in the New Year with his favorite grandkid. Eddie was adamant about you coming to see the band play at their old stomping ground. How could you say no to those pleading eyes?
“Hawkins,” Eddie spoke into the microphone, the crowd around you screaming. “I’ve got one more song for you tonight.” You gave Eddie a puzzled look as the chords of Journey’s song “Faithfully” came to life. “This one is dedicated to my lady.”
Dustin bumped you on the shoulder, his grin shining through the smoke that filled the room. “Why did he add Journey to the setlist? He fucking hates them.” You called over the sound of Gareth’s keyboard.
“They say that the road ain't no place to start a family, Right down the line, it's been you and me”
“No, he hates the Eagles remember?”
“Dustin I know him like the back of my hand, he hates them both equa-”
“Shut up and watch Eddie,” Dustin pushed your head back to the stage, making you watch Eddie sing. You looked him over once, then again. Your eyes froze on the spot your engagement ring was supposed to be situated in. There was nothing dangling next to the guitar pick. You turned back to Dustin.
“What is he planning?”
“N-nothing, I swear,” he wouldn’t meet your eyes, instead he looked at the stage trying to convey their plan was about to be ruined. You watched him try to nonchalantly tilt his head to you with his lips pressed into a thin line.
“Through space and time, Always another show, Wonderin' where I am Lost without you.”
Eddie sang, glancing between you and Dustin.
“Really? Then where is my ring?” You could feel the panic set in. “Dustin tell me what he’s planning.”  Jeff took over the vocals when Eddie finally got the message and jumped off the stage, bounding towards you. God, why did he have to look so heavenly in the dim bar lighting?
“Hey Bug?” Eddie pulled you in, resting his forehead against yours. You locked eyes with him, a lump growing in the back of your throat. “Y’know I love you, right?” All you could do is nod, afraid that opening your mouth would cause tears to fall.
“And being apart ain't easy on this love affair, Two strangers learn to fall in love again,”
“And I’m not gonna leave you ever again. Not in a million years,” He’s grabbing your face between his hands. “Shoulda chased you down the night I let you leave,” Calloused thumbs rubbing against your cheeks. You could feel your hands shaking as you grabbed onto his leather jacket, trying to steady yourself. Slowly he moved his hands down to your shoulders, one hand moving to his pocket. You’re frozen in place, feeling everyone’s eyes on you.
“Eddie,” you weren’t sure where to begin. “Are you sure?”
“Baby, you are the sun, the moon, and all of the fucking stars to me. I’ve spent every day since Chicago planning our future. I don’t wanna do life with anyone else,” he’s on a knee now, your ring grasped between a finger and thumb, brown eyes pleading with you.
“Faithfully, I'm still yours,”
All the walls were down, and with the walls came the tears. You couldn’t even form words so you just sobbed and nodded your head. Eddie gave you a smile, slipping the ring back onto your finger before giving it a kiss. It was back where it belonged. He stood up, pulling you against his chest. The crowd around you chanted “Kiss, Kiss, Kiss,” and you happily obliged. You pulled him up, hands tangling in the dark curls as you crashed your lips into his.
“Happy New Year baby,” Eddie mumbled against the kiss, a smile growing as the two of you pulled away.
-----
Willow would not stop screaming. It was high pitched, piercing your eardrum, making her face turn bright red. Tears were streaming down her little face as she continued to wail. It was making it impossible to listen to Eddie on the other end of the line.
“Baby, I can’t leave tonight. They want us to rerecord half of these songs, I keep trying to hurry but I’m stuck here for the night.” Another ear-piercing scream erupted from your daughter’s lungs. “I promise I’ll be home tomorrow night.”
“It’s fine,” you groaned, wanting to slam your head against the wall. The life of a rockstar. There was never really an off-season, always on the go to record something or tour. Eddie had been told they were only supposed to spend a few hours to start on the album but it was closing in on twilight and he was still in the city. “Can you talk to her? She misses you.”
Since moving in, Eddie and Willow spent no time apart. He was her new best friend, the stay-at-home parent to play with all day long. This had been the first time in almost three months he wasn’t there to tuck her in.
“Yeah, put her on,” he lounged against the brown leather couch in the recording studio. He heard you shuffle around the kitchen, trying to console the sobbing toddler. ‘mere Will- daddy wants to say goodnight’ to which another sob erupts from the background. It was driving him crazy being so far away.
“Daddy?” there was a sniffle.
“Hey, baby girl,”
“Where awe you?”
“Daddy has to work late tonight,” he sighed. “I’ll be home tomorrow baby. I’ll come get ya from gran’s as soon as I get back,” there was another sniffle. “Willow, don’t cry. I promise I’ll be home real soon, ‘kay?”
“I misses you”
“I miss you more, goodnight princess,”
------
Bright fluorescent lights shined down, making Eddie look paler than he already was. Technically this was Willow’s idea, she wanted something for Eddie to carry around with him, and he was happy to oblige.
“I thought you said she wanted a ring to match mine,”‘ you flexed your fingers out, showing off the emerald.
“Yeah, but this is more my style,” Eddie grinned up at you. The tattoo artist sat on the opposite side, laying the stencil over the part of Eddie’s chest that housed his heart. “She’s gonna think it’s the coolest thing ever.”
“Yes, our three-year-old will definitely think this is cool,” you mocked him, giving his hand a quick squeeze. “Good thing you look good tatted up baby.”
Willow was written in your penmanship, enclosed in a heart. After the fiasco a few weeks back Eddie hadn’t left home. This was the first time the two of you were out of the house and child-free since then.  Dustin came over to watch for the few hours you two would be gone. Even so, Willow still cried when she saw Eddie grab his boots from their place at the front door. If she was bad now, you couldn’t fathom to think about how she’d be whenever they kicked off the next tour.
“Hey,” Eddie squeezed your hand to grab your attention. “Whatcha thinking ‘bout?”
“Just the little monster I’ll have to deal with when you have to go back on the road.”
“Oh,” you watched the little frown formed between his eyebrows. “Maybe you guys could come with me?”
“Maybe,” you squeezed his hand with a small smile. “Just depends on if I’m Mrs. Munson by then.” Eddie rolled his eyes, wincing when the tattoo needle pierced his skin.
He wasn’t a stranger to the call of the needle, his arms and chest littered with random pieces from over the years. If he lifted up his arm, your name branded into his rib cage, added right before you two had left Hawkins in ‘86. The collection of bats on his elbow had grown and trailed up his forearm and wrapped around the puppet that decorated his bicep. Willow loved sitting in his lap in the mornings and tracing the shapes that littered his chest with her chubby finger.
“Make sure there’s room under that heart for another name to be added,” Eddie reminded the artist, who only grunted in response. He looked back at you, noticing the confused look. “Y’know for the next kiddo.”
You hummed, leaning down to place a kiss on his forehead.

Prompt: “For you, I’d do anything.”
Season 12
“Wait, we aren’t spending the night together before the wedding?”
Sylvie had a feeling that little wedding detail would grab Matt’s attention.
She looks up from obsessively cleaning the floor. Matt’s leaning in the doorway, studying the photocopy first draft of her wedding itinerary curtesy of Cindy’s love for crafts.
“It’s tradition,” she replies.
He folds the paper into fourths and tucks it into his pocket. “A very old tradition. I guess it makes sense for couples who haven’t slept together prior to the wedding but we are definitely not that couple.”
She suppresses a laugh. Matt is absolutely right but this request also isn’t really her idea.
“It’s one night apart. I stay here at the apartment, and you sleep at the loft with Severide and Kidd. It’ll be like old times.”
Yeah, she’s not even convincing herself.
He removes the mop from her fingers and then wraps her in his arms. “Honey, I think we have spent plenty of nights apart. We’ve done our time. I don’t want to spend one more without you.”
Honestly, she doesn’t really either but it’s probably for the best. The whole no-shacking-up-with-your-fiancé-before-the-wedding-rule is not something she believes in.
It wasn’t her original plan, but her mother made a comment earlier on the phone. It seems she expects Sylvie to follow that tradition and she just didn’t have the heart to tell her no.
She rubs her hands down his arms. “Matt, it’s just one more night. My parents find it important that we don’t…cohabitate the night before the wedding.”
He tilts his head and grins. “So this is your parent’s request? Do they really think we haven’t had premarital…relations?”
Her face instantly heats red from this conversation. It’s an uncomfortable situation. Yes, she has a very fulfilling sex life. She’s not ashamed of that but it’s not something she wants to throw in her parent’s faces.
“I don’t know but I sure as heck don’t want to give them proof otherwise,” she replies.
“Your parent’s really think you are an angel, huh?” He teases, poking her side. “I’ll have you know that we’ve done a lot of things in a lot of places, so your parents are a little late with this plan to keep you pure.”
She snorts and whacks his shoulder. “I can not believe you just said that!” She covers her face in embarrassment. “I would assume they know I’m not pure, but they are my parents. I don’t think they enjoy theorizing about our sex life. We just need to placate them.”
“Placate them. Okay, we can do that,” he agrees. He tucks her hair behind her shoulders. “What if I agree to make a pillow barrier between us so your parents know I’m not crossing any boundaries?”
He’s so cute and patient. Sylvie knows how ridiculous this request is. They’ve spent so many nights together. She spent months in Portland at his place and now they live together…unbeknownst to her parents right now. She’ll tell them when they get to Chicago.
“That’s a very sweet offer but I think my mom has her heart set on you far away before the wedding. She and my dad want to spend it with me and Julia here before I become your wife.”
He sighs.
“I know this is such a pain,” she whispers, stroking his cheek. “But tradition is so important to my family. We’ve already kind of broken all the other ones when our relationship progressed out of order. I just don’t want to stomp on another one if I can avoid it.”
Matt kisses her. He pulls away and frames her face with his hands. “Alright. I’ll crash on Severide’s couch one last time.”
“You will?”
“Yes, because it’s clearly important to you and your parents. Do I think it’s a little pointless this far into our relationship? Yes, but I want to start our marriage on a good note with your mom and dad. If it’s what they need, then they got it.”
She’s so lucky. She’s literally so so lucky.
“You’d really do all of that just to make them happy?”
“For you, I’d do anything. Plus, like you said, we have the rest of our lives to sleep in the same bed. I can survive one more night without you.”
She throws her arms around his neck. “I’m sorry, you know? I’m not thrilled either.”
Matt rubs her back. “Don’t be sorry. Our wedding day is going to be one of the best days of our lives. That’s what I care about.”
She smiles against his shoulder.
That’s all she cares about too.

Love blooms, love hurts, love prevails
Steddie | M | angst (but the bittersweet kind) with a happy ending | ~5.5k
AO3 link
The flower sickness is ruthless; its seeds grow on love, and if love is locked away in secret, inside the cage of one's heart, nowhere to go, it will eventually kill its host. When Eddie starts coughing up blooms for Steve, he has no choice but to confess his feelings. He never expected his straight friend to reciprocate; but at least his worst fears don't come true, Steve still seems happy to have him around. And, with his feelings out in the open, Eddie's no longer at risk of choking to death on another flower, so there's that to be thankful for. After overcoming some initial awkwardness, Eddie finds joy in whatever closeness he can have, in Steve just letting him love him in small, seemingly insignificant ways. Their friendship grows, eventually blurring the edges between platonic love and something more.
So, uh. I read this post about hanahaki with a twist and immediately became obsessed. I mean. OBSESSED. Huge thanks to OP @lovedumbandbroke for this inspo. I am kissing their brain.
@sidekick-hero thanks for the encouragement my dear! 🧡

"Son, you can't go on like this."
Eddie's uncle sits next to him on his bed, rubbing his back gently as Eddie still wheezes, struggles to get his breathing back to normal. A giant, fist-size peony blossom lies on the floor in front of him, looking pretty and innocent, as if it hasn't just nearly choked him to death.
“Whoever it is," Wayne insists. "You gotta tell him. I know it’s scary.”
“Terrifying,” Eddie croaks, wincing. Using his vocal chords right after another… incident, always feels like sandpaper on the inside of his throat.
“I know, buddy. Look,” Wayne pulls on his shoulder, makes him look up. “What’s the worst thing you think will happen? Can he hurt you?”
“No.” Eddie shakes his head, confident. At least there’s one thing he’s sure about. “No, he wouldn’t. I think…” He takes a breath that’s suddenly a little too deep for his lungs, and he coughs again; thankfully, no petals come out this time. He takes another careful sip of water from the glass his uncle brought. “I think he just wouldn’t wanna be around me anymore. And that would really, really suck.”
They sit in silence for a moment.
“Promise me you’ll do something about this, Eddie,” Wayne finally asks. “I just… I can’t keep wondering if you’re gonna make it through the night.”
Eddie lets out a sigh, is grateful for the lack of coughing to accompany it, despite the burning in his chest.
“Yeah. Okay. I will.” He nods, determined. “I’ll tell him. Tomorrow. M’sorry for worrying you.”
“Don’t be sorry, it’s my job to worry.” Wayne squeezes his shoulder once more before standing up. “I’m gonna make some mint tea, should be good for your throat.”
When his uncle leaves the room, Eddie picks up the flower, absentmindedly starts tearing the petals off of it, one by one. He loves me, he loves me not, he loves me, his brain stupidly supplies, and oh no, he’s not doing that. He throws the tattered remains of the flower across the room, experiencing mild satisfaction when it lands right inside the trashcan.
Eddie flops back on the mattress with a frustrated groan. Fuck, he was so careful. His whole teenage life, he stayed far away from all the straight pretty boys, precisely for this reason. They were dangerous. Getting close to anyone that way was dangerous, he knew he had the seeds of the disease in him; his mother died from it, too scared of his father to do something about the feelings she had for another person.
And just as he was almost safe, has almost graduated, almost out of Hawkins and on his way to Indianapolis or Chicago or any other place he had a real shot of meeting someone he could be with… Steve goddamn Harrington had to barge into his life, literally save him from the brink of death, and then stick around, god knows why, maybe just to torture Eddie with his stupid doe eyes and sunshine smiles.
