Are you still writing for OFTM????
I had an idea- Sam Bam being a child and stumbling on to a project of actress!readers projects on TV where she is kissing someone else and he just can’t wrap his head around it and tells Joel all seriously like I saw mama kissing someone and chaos ensues till you come back home and you have to kiss Joel and love on him to prove to Sam that you only have eyes for his dad 😩😩😩
DID YOU FIND MY WIP FILE BECAUSE I WAS LITERALLY WRITING THIS EXACT IDEA
At Last
Pairing: rockstar!joel miller x actress!reader
Summary: Sam doesn't understand the difference between acting and real-life [1.4k]
Warnings: Sam being scared about his parents relationship, pregnancy, parental anxiety, I think that's it
Tumblr media
You knew the trailer for the finale of Things We Don't Talk About was coming out soon. The studio had given you a heads-up and told you to expect lots of excitement coming your way. You didn't expect it to play on your TV with your three-year-old and husband in the room. You watch as he watches the dramatic clips of you and your castmates doing your job and visibly cringe when a split-second clip of you kissing Dylan comes up. Sam suddenly stops petting Daisy and looks shocked as he looks at you and Joel sitting on the couch, your feet in Joel's lap to take the pressure off your swollen ankles.
"Uh, oh," Joel mutters as he watches at least six different emotions play out across Sam's features. Joel stops massaging your feet and opens his arms. "C'mere, buddy," Sammy doesn't hesitate to launch himself into Joel's chest and gives you a worried look as Joel rubs his back. "What's wrong?"
"Mommy doesn't love Daddy anymore." He whines. You make a sympathetic noise and sit up, resting your head on Joel's shoulder and tucking a curl behind Sam's ear.
"Honey, that's not true. I love Daddy."
"Then, why were you kissing that man?" He asks, and you take a deep breath. You knew you were gonna have to have this conversation with him one day, but you weren't expecting it to make him so upset. He's a lot like Joel in that he feels his feelings intensely and all at once.
"You know how we sometimes talk about how Mommy's job is to go play pretend?" You ask, and he nods. "So, if you ever see me doing things like being mean or sad or kissing people who aren't Daddy, it's just pretend. It's not real."
"It looked real."
"I know it did, but I don't love Dylan like I love Daddy. Dylan is just somebody I work with, like how Julia works with Daddy. They're friends, but they're not friends how Mommy and Daddy are friends," you say as you hold out your left hand and show Sam your wedding rings. "Do you know why we wear rings like this on this finger?" You ask, spinning your engagement ring to emphasize your point. Sam shakes his head. "Before you were even born, Mommy and Daddy lived together, and we hung out with Sarah and Ellie all the time, and we were dating, which means that we only wanted to be with each other—no one else. But one day, Daddy decided he loved Mommy so much that he wanted to make me his wife. So, he bought me this pretty ring and asked me to marry him, and guess what I said?"
"What?" Sam asks, a curious glint in his eyes. You straighten up and mimic what you're sure you looked like when you realized Joel was proposing all those years ago.
"Yes! Of course, I'll marry you!" You say excitedly as you wrap your arms around Joel's neck and kiss him. Sam and Joel giggle as you dramatically press kisses all over his face. You smile as you look back down at Sammy and show him your left hand again. "And then, a little while later, Mommy and Daddy got married, which means we promised to love each other forever and ever and ever in front of Sarah and Ellie and Abuela Lucy and Grandpa Hank and everyone," you reach for Joel's left hand to show Sam Joel's gold wedding band. "So, then Daddy got to have a ring, too. And I put the ring on his finger and said I would love him no matter what."
"Even when he's grumpy?"
"Even when he's grumpy, that's right."
"And what did Daddy say?" Sam asks, looking at Joel, and you smile as he beams at you, tracing the line of your wedding ring.
"I said there's no one else in the world I love like her, and I want to spend every day with her."
"Did you cry?"
"The whole time," Joel says, and you laugh because he totally did. "But, then, guess what happened."
"What?" Sam asks as Joel leans in to kiss you again, making Sam clap and giggle. Most kids hate seeing their parents show affection, but Sam loves it. Probably because he's only ever known his dad to be affectionate and loving toward you. Joel sometimes lays it on a little thick, holding your hand in the airport or wrapping his arms around your waist while you're cooking, but you figure there are worse things in the world than growing up seeing how much your parents love each other.
"And then we were married!" Joel exclaims, and Sam screeches in excitement. "And then we had you, and now we're having your baby sisters. Isn't that cool?" He asks, and Sam hums as he rests a hand on your bump.
"So, even if Mommy pretends like she loves someone who's not Daddy, do I still love Daddy?" You ask.
"Yes, because you love Daddy even when he's grumpy!"
"Hey, I'm not grumpy." Joel protests, but it doesn't matter because Sam is already scrambling off his lap to do whatever else he wants, Daisy following closely behind. You sigh as you lean back into the couch, pinching the bridge of your nose.
"Do you think we totally traumatized him?" You ask, and Joel laughs.
"I think he's gonna be just fine." He says as he hovers over you, resting a hand on your belly and kissing your cheek.
"I didn't expect him to get so upset."
"Toddlers are not known for their ability to regulate their emotions."
"You know what I mean," you say, slapping his arm. "I just don't want him ever to question our relationship." You sigh, and Joel nods.
"We have fuckin' weird jobs. That's not a secret, but I think if we just keep doin' what we're doin', he'll learn there's nothing we can't handle. And when the girls are here," he says, rubbing your stomach. "They'll get to learn the same thing, and it'll be okay because I love you, and I love you more and more as the years go on," you smile, immediately remembering the first time he said those words to you at the altar. "And I'll love you when I'm old and wrinkly and can't hear for shit, and-"
"I can't believe you still remember your exact vows five years later."
"Of course I do. How could I forget the moment you became my wife?" He asks, and you take a big breath as you play with his hair.
"We've been together a long time now."
"Almost a decade." He says, and you nod. You've both been at least six different versions of yourselves since you've been together, and you've loved each other through all of them. Through all the tours, awards seasons, sleepless nights, and stupid arguments, your love hasn't wavered. Ryan and Carolina even admitted that you two are the most lovesick couple they've ever seen, somehow still finding ways you be affectionate and deliriously in love after (almost) five kids. Which is saying a lot considering they were married and having kids long before you two were.
"D'you remember the night we went on our first double date with Ryan and Carolina, and you gave me your jacket?" You ask, and he laughs.
"And we were pretty much at each other's throats the whole night? Yeah, that rings some bells."
"Uh, I don't know about that," you give him a look. "You kissed me and called me pretty girl."
"Could you blame me? You were wearin' that cute little tank top and did your hair all nice."
"You're easy to please."
"And you took advantage of me." He says, and you laugh as he kisses your neck. When his lips graze your skin, one of the girls kicks hard at your ribs and steals your breath. Joel feels it against his hand and laughs as he looks down at where they live.
"Your daughters object to your version of events."
"They are their mama's daughters." He says, moving to sit at your feet again but leaving a hand on your belly, feeling your daughters move as you listen to Sam play with Daisy in the other room. If you're quiet enough, you swear you can hear the heartbroken girl filming in Ireland weeping over the love that fills your shared house.

Smokey brand Select: Embarrassment of Riches
I am a shill for A24 films, man. They are almost exclusively excellent. Some of my all-time favorite have come out of that studio and it looks like that excellence is continuing into this year. I recently saw Everything Everywhere All at Once and, my god, was it fantastic! That was going to be my A24 entry of the year but then i found out Alex Garland got a joint coming out next week called Men. Dude is one of my absolute favorites directors, with only three films under his belt. His first? The movie that but me on to his brilliance? The film that introduced me to Oscar Issac and Alicia Vikander? The film that slid into my top-five all time like nothing? Ex Machina! This studio has only been around for about a decade and it has some absolute bangers under it’s belt. I wanted to highlight a few of my favorites because, f*ck, are these film fantastic!
10. Life After Beth
Tumblr media
Life After Beth is a hilarious take on the oft derivative zombie sub-genre of horror. You’ll notice a lot of horror on this list. A24 does that sh*t VERY well but Beth isn’t necessarily scary. It’s hilarious and has some pretty dope makeup but it’s Aubrey Plaza’s performance as Beth that’s the draw here. This was the first time i really saw her stretch her acting legs outside of Parks and Rec. Maybe. It’s one of the first, at least. I can’t remember if i saw this before i saw Ingrid Goes West. That was an excellent film, too.
9. The Killing of a Sacred Dear
Tumblr media
I loved this movie the first time i watched it. Just the concept, alone, is enough to get my butt in that theater seat. It’s so decadently f*cked up and really delivers on the abject filth that is the human experience. It’s as unsettling to me as The VVitch but in a much smaller, much more intimate way. I absolutely adore this film and highly recommend everyone who enjoys cinema in passing, to check it out at least once.
8. Zola
Tumblr media
I remember reading this Twatter thread years ago and thought it would make an absolutely ridiculous movie. Guess who thought the same? I will love A24 forever simply for granting my wish to see this stripper trash crime thriller into a proper film but, oh my, did i have a great time with it! Zola is everything Spring Breakers is and more. It has that some chaotic energy, that grimy Florida swagger, and uses all of it to give real life to one of the most unhinged narrative es I've ever had the “pleasure” of reading.
7. The Lighthouse
Tumblr media
Yo, what the f*ck did i watch and why did i love it so much? Robert Eggers, another of my favorite directors, put together this weird ass, nightmare fairy tale straight out of east coast antiquity, filled with farts, gin, masturbation, homo-eroticism, and mermaid shark puss. Like, anatomically correct mermaid shark puss. Sh*t was uncalled for but i ain’t look away. Eggers will definitely make another appearance on this list much closer to the top but i would be remiss if i didn’t put The Lighthouse on here, too.
6. Uncut Gems
Tumblr media
Uncut Gems is the most stressful film i have ever seen in my entire f*cking life. It’s so goddamn good. Deftly directed, expertly performed, and filmed at such a spastic pace, you never know when the other shoe is going to drop. Adam Sandler tuns in the best performance he’s ever attempted and Julia Fox matches that energy beat for beat. I’ve only seen this sh*t once and that was enough. More than enough.
5. The Tragedy of Macbeth
Tumblr media
This one snuck up on me. Macbeth is my favorite Shakespeare play so i was already on board for this thing, but to have it coming out of A24, i knew it was going to e special. Then i found out it was being directed by Joel Coen. Then i found out it would star Denzel Washington. I was fortunate enough to catch this thing in January after it hit streaming and i was absolutely mesmerized. Washington delivered an absolutely breathtaking performance as Macbeth and Coen did some of his best work guiding that aggressive energy. I was never bored and almost always impressed, especially considering how minimalist the production was.
4. Midsommar
Tumblr media
Much like Robert Eggers, Ari Aster is going to definitely show up on this late but right now, we are talking about Midsommar. Holy sh*t, is this thing good! It is a near perfect film with one f the most gut-wrenching narratives I've seen i n a very long time Human frailty and the longing for acceptance are themes that run through this move and Aster really uses them to  horrify the f*ck out of you. This film is an exercise in brutality but, at the same time, its f*cking gorgeous. There is so much light, so much color, it’s kind of amazing how f*cked up it is considering the very near pastel presentation. I love that juxtaposition almost as much as i love this film, overall.
3. Under the Skin
Tumblr media
This was the very first experience  ever had with A24 and it was a f*cking doozy. This movie is damn near incomprehensible but, a the same time, absolutely brilliant. Scarlett Johansson is butt-ass, full frontal, nude in this thing, repeatedly, and i didn’t even care! Her performance as an emotionless extraterrestrial, hunting us with her beauty and overt sexuality, was f*cking spellbinding. I knew Scarlett was an amazing actress but seeing her in this? F*ck, dude, i was transfixed. I was petrified. I was captivated. Plus, this film is a work of art. Visually, it’s a goddamn feast, man.
2a. Hereditary
Tumblr media
Ari Aster’s first film and one of the only I've ever seen to f*ck me up. Hereditary made me feel gross, like i was watching a snuff film. Objectively, it’s not that terrible. Sure, there are horrifying scenes in this flick but, at it’s core, it’s a film about loss and the toll that takes on a family but f*ck if Toni Collette didn’t make me feel that sh*t. Ma turned in one of the all-time performances i have ever had the pleasure of witnessing, and got straight snubbed for it. That scene where Paimon finally takes over her body after just brutally breaking her down emotionally, spiritually, and mentally? that snap possession? F*cking inspired!
2b. The VVitch
Tumblr media
This is my first experience with Robert Eggers and the meticulous attention to detail he puts into his films. The VVitch is a New England fairy tale, set in the colonial age and it’s f*cking outstanding. This is everything an immersive film should be. I was bewitched the second this thing started and beguiled by the absolutely enchanting debut performance from Anya Taylor-Joy. Ma was still just a teenager when this thing was shot and she made a lot of older actors look like amateurs. I knew she would be great and, some seven years later, Anya is one of my favorite actresses with one hell of a resume but it all began with Eggers and a story about a witch.
1a. The Green Knight
Tumblr media
The Green Knight was my most anticipated film for two years running. It kept getting pushed back because of the pandemic but dropped the same year f*cking No Way Home did. You know I'm a Spider-Man shill if you’ve been around these parts long enough but The Green Knight was my favorite film of last year and it wasn’t even close. This thing was worth every second of that wait and delivered a beautiful, passionate, wonderful adaption of some of the most elusive Arthurian narrative available. I loved everything about this film but, more than anything its f*cking gorgeous! Aesthetically, it’s almost as stunning as Under the Skin and that sh*t belongs in a f*cking museum. It also helps, tremendously, that this is the best acting I've ever seen out of Dev Patel.
1b. Everything Everywhere All at Once
Tumblr media
This movie knocked me on my ass with how well made it is. I slept on Daniels for a while but this woke me the f*ck up. I literally just saw this thing, like, a week ago and it’s already become one of my top-twenty all time films. It’s pure genius. Complicated yet accessible. Profound in so many ways yet so simple as to be about just a mother and her daughter. This movie was so f*cking good and i want to see it over and over and over again. The strength of Michelle Yeoh’s performance, alone, is one of the best I've ever seen in my entire f*cking life but this film has so much more to offer that it’s borderline disrespectful. This movie is disrespectful with it’s greatness.
1c. Ex Machina
Tumblr media
I love cyberpunk. I love existentialism. I love Shakespeare. Ex Machina is literally all of that. This is a interpolation of my second favorite Shakespearean effort, The Tempest, conjured up by Alex Garland in his feature film debut. Mans does so much with so little and , to this day, i am still impressed. Ex Machina is heady and dense, but you wouldn’t know it with how effortless Garland tells this story. A set of electric performances from Oscar Isaac and Alicia Vikander really goes a long way to embellishing that minimalist kineticism Garland infused with is narrative. Ex Machina is top tier cinema for me and i have been a fan of everyone involved with this film since i first saw it seven years ago.
Honorable Mentions: Room, Swiss Army Man, The Blackcoat’s Daughter, Enemy, Spring Breakers, Tusk, Climax, The Lobster, The Monster, Eighth Grade, Mid90′s, Under the Silver Lake, Saint Maud, X, Lady Bird

Parenthood
Sooooo, I watched this, and here are some thoughts.
I love Friday Night Lights, so that’s obviously a big reason why I wanted to watch this. I was reading stuff after watching it, and I remembered I had heard about Parenthood before it started when Lauren replaced Maura Tierney. I can’t even imagine how different the show would’ve been, but let’s get to it.
First of all, amazing show. I absolutely adored most of it, I loved the characters, I loved the stories, I loved the people. I loved how it progressively got more FNL, filming wise, as the seasons went on. I’ll break it down by character/couples/siblings:
Julia and Joel: they are the most amazing couple EVER. Erica and Sam had the most amazing chemistry and their little family was my favorite from the get-go. I loved that their marriage was different from the others, as far as they traditionally worked, and how that informed their characters and stories. Sydney’s absolutely lovely, and if people hated her back in the day, their loss. I was absolutely crushed when the pregnancy and adoption didn’t happen, and absolutely thrilled when Victor came around. But TPTB were so cruel with their breakup story, you have no idea how much I hated it. There was that episode where everyone learned that Crosby had cheated on Jasmine and Joel said he’d never cheat on Julia, so when she cheated on him, that was devastating to me. I was also surprised that the show was framing it as “Joel walked away and now Julia can’t forgive him” at a certain point cause I never saw the situation like that so that was really confusing to me. I’ve seen some interviews since, so I get what they meant by it, but I still don’t agree with it. I was just super happy that they got back together and had a big happy ending to their story.
Adam and Kristina: they were such dorks at times and amazing parents and just good. I loved their dynamic, I was so moved by the cancer story because it felt like TPTB didn’t shy away from telling that as realistically as they possibly could, and it was a lot to take in at times. The scene where they tell everyone that Kristina has cancer was heartbreaking. I loved that they showed that journey and then had Kristina move on without forgetting everything about it. I wish there had been more time to explore Adam’s true passion, work-wise, because I think a lot of adults could relate to just doing something for a living for the sake of getting paid, and it would’ve been nice to see him explore in detail if being a headmaster was what he wanted to do, and how he fit there.
Crosby and Jasmine: he was such a mess at times, and I kinda enjoyed that but the cheating sure hurt a lot. It was also the fact that Jasmine and Jabbar were so loveable from the beginning, I was just astounded that he’d do anything that’d put that family at risk. I was also pissed at Jasmine for not telling him about the pregnancy and all the hate that brought from her family at the beginning. I was just glad that they got to be reunited. I wish Jasmine had had more to do in the late seasons, IDK if it was due to the actress having other stuff (I’m pretty sure she was hiding a RL pregnancy in the last season), but she was terribly underused.
Sarah and Hank (and Mark): I’m always gonna love Lauren no matter what, and I thought Sarah had such an amazing arc. It wasn’t always entirely convincing as far as jumping careers/boyfriends, but Sarah really grew a lot as a person, and as a mother. I guess people were invested in the different romantic possibilities, and, I mean, Jason’s charming as hell, so I get that, but the moment Mark said he wanted kids, to me, felt like there was no going back, even tho they got back together after. Seth was never really gonna be, it just wasn’t. Hank was an unexpected surprise, his character grew too, and I thought his relationship with Max was adorable and beautiful, so I was kinda happy for Sarah cause they seemed like a good fit.
Zeek and Millie: what lovely parents and grandparents! Like with Jasmine, I wish Millie had had more to do, but I adored the role each played in their family’s lives, and how they portrayed their relationship. I was so sad when they moved and Zeek got sick. I loved that the end had the whole family honoring his wishes, though, and Millie going to France.
Haddie and Alex (and Lauren): Michael B. Jordan as Alex is one of the highlights of my life, basically. I adored Haddie from the first episode, and I was delighted to see her have a relationship completely different than the one she had with Steve. The fact that Michael was playing Alex just took it to another level because he’s an amazing actor like that, and it brought so many good things for Sarah to play. I swear, Alex’s “breakup scene” with Kristina was one of the scenes that made me cry the most. I get that Michael was blowing up and probably had other stuff, but I wish he’d come back at some point because he truly felt like part of the family. I wish we’d seen more of Lauren too, and just Haddie in general in the latter seasons. I loved Haddie’s relationship with Amber and with Max so much, so I wish we’d had more of that, but I also appreciated a show telling a story where a character goes to college and actually goes there, you know?
Amber (and Ryan) and Drew (and Amy): I enjoyed Amber’s and Drew’s journey much like Sarah’s. I thought she had quite a lot to do, and it all felt like it happened at the right time. Her beginning was a bit rocky, but she got to evolve as far as the relationship with her parents and with her boyfriends go. I didn’t love the Steve part, at all. Ryan, on the other hand, I mean, Matt Lauria can do no wrong, and they were lovely together, but not in an endgame kinda way, so I was really glad when they parted ways. I have to say tho, the whole sex in the hospital part, just to create the pregnancy storyline, that was lame, like, terribly so. I love that Mae was a huge FNL fan and she was living the life while working with former FNL actors. Drew had a little less, but he also got to shine quite a bit, and the fact that the character was much more quiet than most of the rest helped make those moments stand out. I’m really glad that this show told the story of an abortion, I was so glad for it and the girl who plays Amy got to shine as well.
Sydney and Victor: these two, I swear, I loved them so fucking much. Like, Syd was just adorable and the episode where she left the house, I was laughing-crying, it was so lovely! And then Victor came along and I just loved him too, so, so much!!!
Max: he’s like, I don’t know where to start! His story was incredible, the actor was so amazing cause, in paper, he could’ve gone one-note and get away with it, but he did so much more than that. Some of the most emotional moments for me where Max-related because every little bit of development he had felt like such an achievement. I adored his friendship with Hank, it was so beautiful to see that develop (ha!) and how, like Hank said, they both learned so much from each other.
I think it was the interactions between the different characters that made the show strong, and everyone had A Moment. The first three seasons were the best at that, at having characters collide and relate in different and interesting ways. Like, Crosby being there when Kristina gave birth, whenever Amber had to babysit her cousins, Joel helping Crosby with the house and bonding with Jasmine about not being a Braverman, and such. The show fell a little when the characters were more confined to their own bubble later on, and there was a bit of too much of the same dynamics, or at least it felt that way to me. Like, I think The Luncheonette was a box that the writers couldn’t navigate properly, it didn’t allow for Crosby and Adam to do much without the other, and was partly to blame for the lack of Jasmine too.
Overall, I absolutely loved a lot of what the show had to offer, and while I’m late, I’m glad I’ve finally gotten around to watching it and knowing the Braverman family.

i picked 11 questions for the 11 characters so answer 1 for each of whichever u think would be most interesting :3 or just whoever you want to: 6, 11, 16, 46, 47, 60, 63, 79, 97, 98, 99
6. What’s your favorite outfit?
Samson: I really like this outfit I'm wearing right now, I got this blue raglan shirt and these jeans and brown shoes from Kohl's recently :) when I got them I made Joel come over so I could give her a fashion show
(the gang often pokes fun of Samson for his plain wardrobe but he likes it and Joel will defend him viciously while also teasing him)
11. What song has the most relatable song lyrics to you?
Joel: Snail- Cavetown and Chloe Moriondo
Cass: Figure It Out- Orla Gartland
(listen to Snail if you want to sob and cry forever. listen to Figure it Out if you want to imagine Cass looking dramatically out the window and also punching the air)
16. What’s your favorite feature of yours?
Bambi: I've been told I have a nice smile :)
46. Do you have any tattoos or want to get one?
Mads: I've got some eyeballs along my ribcage but I would kill for a snake tattoo that wraps around my arm if I can ever shell out the money.
Bambi: back when I was trying to be edgy I let someone tattoo an eagle on my right shoulder blade. Terrible idea because it's the worst-executed tattoo I've ever seen in my life -- I am begging you not to tell the others
47. Biggest pet peeve?
Jericho: When people pretend they can't hear me >:( it happens a lot and I don't get why
(this is because Jericho is literally so annoying and is constantly wanting a reaction out of people)
60. Can you cook and do you enjoy it?
Kristen: I learned to cook pretty young because my parents were often out of the house. I really don't like to do it though
Violet: I so desperately want to be a good little housewife but I am a disaster in the kitchen :(
63. Is there a genre of music you don’t like?
Jenna: I *thought* that I was down to listen to anything, but then when I moved into Wiley and I heard Jax's music I quickly learned that I was not, in fact, down to listen to just anything
(Jax listens to a lot of weirdcore and midwest emo -- these are not bad genres but Jenna can only tolerate so much weird shouting and synth noises)
79. Do you like surprises?
Violet, Joel, Jericho, Bambi, Jenna, Cass, and Julia all love surprises!!
Kristen, Samson, and Jax aren't super excited about them
Don't try to surprise Mads or you might get your ass kicked
97. Are you more of a planner or a spontaneous adventurer?
Jax: I don't think I've planned anything in my life lmao
98. Do you think you see yourself the way other people see you?
Julia: Well of COURSE everyone sees me as a super-cool-and-well-knowledged forest guide! They respect and fear my raw power!!!! >:D
99. What’s the last show you binged?
Violet: I just got Kristen to watch She-Ra with me and it was so cute and good :')

ah i don’t think my ask ever sent (if it did,,, ignore this) but one, i miss damien abney and joel caswell. and two, i finally got around to listening to olivia rose keegan’s version of home and how out of place it was on the volume two soundtrack (although it’s mostly likely a bonus track, so that’s valid). but all i can think about is either a post-credits or “deleted” scene where after ricky calls lily, the notification for the voicemail pops up on her deserted phone on the couch, simultaneously with a message from an unknown number/contact name. all the while her father and stepmother are arguing upstairs, she decides to drown out the noise by playing the song, which can also serve as an inner monologue of how she truly feels about damien leaving and the definition of home altering for her. as soon as she finishes, she lets out this sigh as reality settles in and the noise is suddenly gone. but the ring of a doorbell echoes soon after in the sudden silence of the household, leaving only lily to get the door and it leaves on a cliffhanger with dami on the other side and zooming in on her reaction-
i really hope this made sense oop-
ohmygod????? daniza, this is so powerful i don't think you fully understand the extent of your actions. in literally one (1) scene you have created so much depth to lily's character - more than all of season 2 smh - and this is canon, now, you cannot convince me otherwise. imagine how poignant it would have been, had this been the final shot of the season. even without having known dami prior to, audiences would be hooked. because it's so provocative!
why is the final shot of lily and not the east high kids? why are we suddenly diving more into lily's character (pssst - it's because she's a character w/ actual potential that i hope will be looked at in depth in seasons to come)? who is person at the door? why does she look shocked, betrayed, hopeful, and angry at all the same time? why is she allowed to sing home??????
there would've been so much to unpack by just adding in one (1) scene alone, and truly, you have a gift for gravitas, daniza.
and then, just,,,,,, damien my beloved, you are trying to make amends and i love that for you.
also, it did intrigue me when i saw her version of home. ofc, it's really good (although julia lester killed that song and she will forever be my belle, tbh) so maybe they just wanted her to flex her vocals or include her or something, but is there something more? the immediate thought i have is just that they are going to give her more importance in later seasons, so this song is like,,,, a soft introduction. a 'hey, listen to this girl, though. she can sing.' but.... is there something more to it? why have her sing this particular song? why have the full version? show execs, i want answers.

Moontower Gives a Voice to What We’re All Feeling on ‘What Day Is It?’ [Q&A]
Tumblr media
Los Angeles based Indie-electro trio Moontower just unveiled their vibrant new EP What Day Is It?. Aptly titled for the current situation the world faces, we are all left wondering that same question as every day blends into the next. The highly anticipated release features innovative and enthralling soundscapes as well as relatable messages including striving for self-awareness and relational connection.
Moontower’s music combines quirky pop with French house inspired production. From their infectious singles to invigorating live shows, Moontower is a band on the rise. Ones to Watch had the opportunity to speak with them about their latest EP, virtual tour and musical influences.
Ones to Watch: In late May you released a 15-minute performance video entitled “What Day Is It?”. What inspired you to create an EP with the same name?
Moontower: We started Moontower as a live-focussed project and that has never really changed… With that in mind, it’s always been our intention to be able to FIRST play our songs live for people before releasing them, giving concert go-ers the opportunity to get acquainted with something new in the space that we intend the songs to be “best” heard. With all of the craziness that is 2020, we needed to get a little creative with how to keep that up! Our hope with putting out the “What Day Is It?” performance at the beginning of the Summer was that people could familiarize and experience the songs with live energy before the whole project was released, the same way you would normally in a venue.
The compelling four-track release has a uniquely experimental sound touching on themes of regret, self-doubt and broken relationships. What prominent message do you hope listeners will take away from this EP?
For our first EP, “Season 1”, we used a conduit to tell our own stories, that being a character named William Hollywood – a crime fighting cowboy at the center of our surrealist visual album. For this one, we wanted to tackle something both simpler and more daunting – writing about ourselves without a conduit. With this EP, we’ve touched very directly on some serious subjects to us personally – deaths in the family, dejection inspired by the downfall of our heroes, the unravelling of a relationship, lovesickness causing personal stagnation, and more. We hope people feel inspired to see the beauty in the process of putting yourself back together, especially when things work out differently than how you hoped.
Moontower just completed a virtual interactive tour. Can you explain more about what that experience was like?
Tom - The most important thing that we wanted to offer to differentiate the 15 minute “What Day Is It?” performance video from the 4 night virtual tour was giving people the closest thing they could have to going to a “real” show even when they can’t leave their living room. So, with the “What Day Is It?” virtual tour, you could see everyone else who was “there” and celebrate with them like you were at a venue, you could visit the “virtual merch booth”, there was an opening set and a meet and greet after the show. Really, our goal was to not compromise even in the time when so much is different than what we had envisioned before quarantine.
Jacob - It kept us sane. We had our first headline tour canceled, it would have been really easy to slide into a cycle of self-pity. Luckily we never had the time to.. and for that we have to thank our fans. The fact that we have people who want to see us put on something like this, we just wanted to give them (and ourselves) an experience that was deserving of their desire to look forward to something.
Devan - The experience was surreal, all around. It felt like a different kind of live show! For me, what sticks is the delirious, good, tired feeling that I usually get by the end of a show night. On a normal day of show, If I’ve put everything I could into setup, soundcheck, performing the music the best that I could, and talking with as many fans as I can – it usually ends up with me feeling pretty exhausted by the end of the night (but in the best way). I got the same feeling at the end of each night of our Virtual Tour, which I didn’t realize I needed! Putting on this Virtual Tour was not easy by any stretch – but like most things with Moontower, after putting in the heavy lifting we enjoyed every second of the reward.
On the topic of shows, you’ve performed live with Night Riots and The Driver Era as well as opened for COIN and Cold War Kids. Do you have any interesting tour stories you can share with us?
Tom - I think it is appropriate to give a little shoutout to Riker Lynch, the bassist of The Driver Era who replaced all of our stage water bottles with vodka on the last night of our tour with them. Nothing like sweating on stage and quickly downing a water bottle to discover it is very much NOT water.
Jacob - To jump off that story ^ I usually throw out water bottles to the crowd after our sets (venues charge too much for water) but yeah, not that night. It’s beautiful to feel like you’re home no matter where you go, that’s what our community gives to us...even if nobody knows who you are at the start of the night, you have friends by the end.
Devan - We’ve definitely had those hilariously classic touring stories, from fast food runs to the strange people you meet, to the unexpected – those never get old. Overall though, I do want to share that we’ve had the pleasure of touring with some of the most professional people in music. Touring is not easy - it’s tough but extremely rewarding work. When we went on those first couple of tours – I had no idea what to expect, yet we had so many pros around us to show the way. Always thankful for their guidance and the friendships made.
youtube
Through your infectious indie-electronic music you have managed to grow a dedicated and loyal fan base.  Who are some of your musical influences and how have they seeped into your sound?
Tom - Moontower started shortly after Jake and I went to go see one of my favorite groups Lemaitre at the El Rey. They really were (and are) so far ahead of their time and the way that they mixed alternative and dance in a live setting really inspired us to get the project off the ground and influenced what we set out to do in a major way. So much love to Ketil and Ulrik!
Jacob - There’s a lot about The Killers that speaks to what we want to do and where we want to go. It’s powerful pop-music you can dance and cry to. They’ve been a band forever, we wanna be touring and making albums together like that and even beyond till we’re as old as The Stones.
Devan - Our tastes are pretty different across the board. Tom’s typically obsessed with dance, French house, & impeccably-produced songs (SebastiAn, Caribou, Breakbot, Busy P). Jake’s got an obsession with well-written songs based on structure, bulletproof lyrics and melodies (Julia Michaels, Phoebe Bridgers, Billy Joel, Manchester Orchestra). I’m obsessed with songs that have grand & strong instrumental harmony (Coldplay, U2, Pat Metheny Group, Tears for Fears). Together, we like the middle ground of Daft Punk meets The Killers – it’s our sweet spot.
What is next for Moontower?
We’ve done a lot that we were very blessed to be able to get done before COVID hit – touring, filming big sequential music videos, promoting our EPs, and playing internationally. What we’re so excited to do next is something none of us have ever actually done before: make a debut full-length album. :)
Lastly, who are your "Ones to Watch"?
There’s an EP coming from a new artist going by Skofee! Also, always so much love to our friends constantly releasing music we love – Younger Hunger, OSTON, Valley, & Max Leone!

Such A Funny Pair - An Ineffable Husbands Mix
A playlist for celestial romance. Listen on Spotify.
God this playlist got so long so fast. A couple odd choices, but I hope you’ll agree with them. This was a combined effort. I thought I was done, and then my roommates would suggest another perfect song! Thanks to @thegay-uillotine for putting up with my endless chatter about this.

Hello I recently began reading historical fiction (both mystery and romance) and I remember you commenting some time ago that you like to read historical romance. Do you have any recommendations? I’m still new to the genre and am finding what I like and don’t like. Thank you. Ps I like your header , Julia Quinn is grate
Hi Anon,
I’m quite fussy myself when it comes to historical romance, but hopefully I can be of some help - I’m really not into ham joints for hands, musclar men and a lot of authors across romance genre tend to base their hero’s around this image. It’s always important to read reviews especially when you’re testing the waters, they sometimes give more detailed descriptions or offer trigger warnings or just warnings of distress (which are much needed, my heart has been broken many a time and a spoiler would have been appreciated). However, don’t base all your judgment on others views, if you think it sounds good but top reviews don’t, just go for it - but if it’s got mostly 2 star reviews then maybe not.
Amanda Quick might be your cup of tea as she combines mystery and romance in a 19th century setting. If you’re just into period mystery then Agatha Christie is always a reccomendation. She’s actually how I got into hr, well Christie and a really good fic writer who wrote an amazing historic au years ago.
A few of my favourites:
Fool for love by Eloisa James. Some heartbreaking moments in this book, for context the heroine has had an injured hip since birth, “They said you would never marry, Henrietta. You are married. They said you would never dance. We are dancing. And they said you would never give birth. But I know you. I know you want this baby. We’ll go to every doctor in England if we have to. We can find someone who will save the baby. And you.”
A week to be wicked by tessa dare - this book is wild - fake betrothals, sharing a bed, science fairs, scientific dirty talk, impromptu weddings, sword swallowing, pretending to have an affair to hide in plain sight, misunderstandings, highwaymen chasing them and lets not forget being robbed at gun point with our hero left for dead before our heroine knocks the lights out of the unsuspecting bandit. This book seems like fanfiction, more specifically fitzsimmons fanfiction. Once I read it I was tempted to write it but I’m a bad writer. Worth noting this book is one of the few books I enjoy both by the author and in the ‘spindle cove’ series, the book prior to this is a good read, the rest are mixed.)
Seven Years to Sin by Sylvia Day is great, I like-love it but I don’t love-love it. The hero coveted heroine for several years however she married during this time, she becomes widowed and the two meet by chance and explore the sparks that have been between them since the moment they laid eyes on one another.
Scandal of the Year by Laura Lee Ghurke - fyi only a pretence of adultery none actually committed- Hero and heroine are discovered in bed together by heroines husband which results in divorce, yes the scandal! Hero has no idea how he ended up in bed with the heroine, he remembers nothing other than her kiss before all fades to black. One later, they meet again, we learn their lives have intersected since they were 16, each coveting the other at one point or another yet too afraid to say something. Basically, Hero wants a future with heroine, heroine is scared and wants to enjoy her freedom after her horrid first marriage.
Her Ladyships Companion by Evangeline Collins - fyi, adultery is committed but your heart aches for the heroine, she was so young when she married and he is so horrid you just want her to be happy ahh spoilers anyway - Hero is a male prostitute (I blame fanfic for my love of this rare trope), he is hired by our heroines close friend who believes heroine deserves some attention in her life. She has every intention of sending him away until she meets him and everything changes. Their relationship is great until Hero realises he wants more than she can give him. He leaves and asks she not to contact for him again, yet he is summoned once more. Does he go back? Will they ever be able to have a real relationship? 🤷🏻‍♀️
When beauty tamed the beast by Eloisa James - the Hero honestly reminds me of Fitz from aos, he’s such a grump. Our hero is a doctor - an upfront and emotionless one at that. He was injured as a child resulting in a permanent limp and the use of a cane. Our heroine is beautiful, the talk of the town and allegedly pregnant having been spotted kissing a prince then throwing up after eating less than fresh prawns at a season event. The hero’s father thinks that his son will never marry or beget an heir (he believes his son impotent) and so arranges a marriage between he and the hero, believing that she is already pregnant which would provide him his heir. The hero is no fool, as a doctor he knows a stuffed pillow when he sees one. This book is packed with affairs by the beach, a spreading disease, a race against time and thunder storms. This book also includes the heroine coming to terms with what she perceives as her loss of looks, as someone who prided herself on looks alone it is such an amazing journey to see her inner thoughts. This book is great, and I really recommend it.
The Earl takes All by Lorraine Heath - I cannot put this book into words. It’s heartbreaking but it’s worth the pain.
Less angsty books include the Westcott series by Mary Balogh (all save the last, Someone to Care, I didn’t care much for the protagonists as I had grew to dislike the heroine in prior books). I’m currently re-reading this series.
Someone to Love - Anna Snow has lived at the orphanage for as long as she can remember, whilst others left once of age, she stayed on to become a teacher (alongside her best friend Joel). One day she receives a letter from a solicitor to meet him in London. She discovers she is the only legitimate heir to an aristocrat after it is revealed he committed bigotry. She is thrust into a life she could never have imagined, with the help of Avery, a handsome lord, to guide her.
Someone to Hold - Camille Westcott begins teaching in the very orphanage Anna grew up in so she can find herself - if her half sibling can live so lowly, so can she. She meets Joel, an artist who teaches art once a week - they immediately dislike each other, due to his loyalty to Anna who is his best friend and the woman he once proposed to. He admires the way she engages the children and sees something in her that Camille doesn’t see herself. There’s sparks, heartbreak and a new discovery that could change Joel’s world forever.
Someone to wed - upon inheriting the Westcott title as the closest male relative to the late Earl of Riverdale, Alexander, the penniless Earl also inherits a mansion which is in desperate need of repairing. Thankfully for him, Wren, his neighbour, has just the solution to his financial problems. Marriage. Having only met Wren, a woman who hides herself behind a dark vail, ten minutes prior, Alex is taken aback by her offer. It’s the perfect solution but why would she marry a total stranger? And what is she hiding behind the vail?
I would also recommend Anna Bradley, her writings are quite light hearted and The Firstborn by Quenby Olson (latter is a clean romance).
I hope you enjoy these recommendations anon, I have tons more if not. I must warn a majority of these are angsty and so Julia Quinn may be a good read in between books. I hope you’re able to find the trope that you like 💕🦔

Chapter 95
**Bonus chapter!!**
(All on eyes are on Sherlock.)
Tumblr media
SD: What the hell?
SP: Be careful, Mr. Holmes. Be very careful.
(Her face is a mask of fury and danger. The look in her eyes would melt a normal human being, but Sherlock has never been normal. John steps closer to her and very slightly in between the woman and the detective. Sherlock stands before the accused.)
S: Your offices, Gorgio’s, and this building are each thirty minutes apart by cab, but only ten walking.
SP: (with a sharp laugh) Ten minutes! For who? A sprinter?
S: Hardly. If you know the right routes, the right paths, and you looked into that very carefully. The walk from your offices to this building and from here to Gorgio’s each had to be ten minutes. You called your meeting off around 6:20 just to make sure you would have twenty to kill your husband. You knew his secretary would have certainly left by 6:30. She told us that Piper always made sure she stayed no later than six and, with nearly everyone else gone home, it was easy for you to walk in and get in the private elevator unobserved.
(Sylvia Piper curls her lip and looks ready to pounce on Sherlock, but she lets him continue without interruption. John’s senses are tingling.)
S: You either found Piper in the freezer or made him go in and shot him. No mess and plenty of time to get to Gorgio’s. Just close the door and leave. The freezer obscures the time of death and makes it look like he could have died nearly anytime last night instead of as soon as you left your offices.
(Feeling the tension rise, Sally shifts closer to Piper and casts warning eyes at the two men.)
SD: Sherlock.
(Piper is smiling now. She looks at Sherlock with confidence, like she owns the world.)
SP: (loudly and with relish) Mr. Holmes. Why. In the hell. Would I kill my husband?
(He fixes her with his intense silver eyes.)
Tumblr media
S: Simple, Mrs. Piper. Your children. (John’s heart skips a beat when Piper’s eyes flash red.) You vividly demonstrated your protective nature when I accused your son and clearly intend to participate in your daughter’s wedding. When is it again? Later this month? You were going to disappear with your husband in mere days and yet, you went to a dress fitting this morning before the police informed you that your husband was dead. You knew your husband was going to die before the wedding so, despite your departure having been planned for weeks, you never bothered to cancel the fitting. Or any other fitting.
(Sylvia Piper has stopped smiling and Sally is beginning to agree with the detective.)
S: And then there’s the burn on your wrist. The burn that our good doctor noticed.
(John’s eyes widen as what he noticed right off, and more or less ignored, suddenly clicks into place. His gaze goes to Piper’s wrist and then up to her face.)
J: It’s a freezer burn.
(The large room fills with an uneasy silence.)
S: A freezer burn. You bumped into something in the freezer. I’m guessing a shelf, based upon its shape and size. In any case, it seals your fate.
(Piper stares at Sherlock with furious daggers. She looks as though she wants to lash out and wrap her fingers around his neck, but also seems to know there is no point in doing so.)
Tumblr media
SP: I have never been involved in Alan’s illegal business. For years, I ignored it and continued to as he built his mafia empire when we came to London. I finally chose to rail against it as the risks became undoubtedly more dangerous. He ignored me. And then he tells me that WE have to leave forever. He didn’t care about Julia’s wedding. She is the child of my first marriage. Alan was just happy to have Joel take over his legacy and didn’t care if he never saw his own son again. But my children are everything to me and they were to disappear from my life because communicating with us would give away Alan’s location. (She shakes her head.) No. I won’t give them up. Not for anything. Yes, I killed my husband, Mr. Holmes, and I’m not sorry.
(After a moment, Sally lightly touches the woman’s arm.)
SD: If you’ll come with me, Mrs. Piper. I’m placing you under arrest for the murder of Alan Piper.
SP: Of course.
(Sally cuffs Piper and reads her rights as she leads her away. Sherlock and John watch until the two women are out the door. John lets out a long breath and scrubs his hands through his hair.)
Tumblr media
J: God, that was refreshing. Seems like forever since we could just work a case. No danger, no risks, no hospital. Just an honest case.
S: Donovan shouldn’t need us for the report. She was right here the whole time.
J: (brows raised) I wouldn’t say that, but I’m sure she won’t really expect us at the Yard until tomorrow. Do you have something in mind?
S: I have some things to do this afternoon, but I thought dinner at Angelo’s around seven?
J: (a corner of his mouth quirking upward) Sounds wonderful.
*                        *                        *                         *
(Among other things, Sherlock pays a visit to Mycroft before going to dinner with John. He strides into his brother’s office and sits. Mycroft looks up from a file he is reading and raises a sarcastic eyebrow.)
Tumblr media
S: New carpet.
M: Well, after getting so much blood on the last one…
S: Indeed. Unfortunate business.
M: (with an impatient smile) To what do I owe the pleasure of your company, brother mine?
A: How is Molly? (Mycroft looks at him blankly.) I haven’t been to Bart’s in some time.
M: Ah. (a long puase while he lays the file on the desk) She’s good. Perfect, in fact.
S: Good, good. (He shifts in his chair, clearly uncomfortable with the line of conversation. Mycroft sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose.)
M: Sherlock, what do you want?
S: Are you happy? The two of you?
(Mycroft’s eyes widen as he hears his younger brother’s questions. He knows the curiosity is not so much about his and Molly’s happiness as it is how he feels about what Sherlock has identified as diminished mental capacity.)
M: I am the same as I ever was, Sherlock. My sharpness has not changed. (He pauses as his brother frowns.) I make different decisions now and someday when Molly and I are parents, (Sherlock’s jaw drops) my decisions will change again. I don’t regret loving Molly and I never will. Do you honestly believe you will ever regret your feelings for John?
S: (without hesitation) No.
(A moment of silence follows. Mycroft straightens his spine and leans forward to meet Sherlock’s eyes with an almost dangerous sincerity.)
M: If you repeat this, I will deny it and make your life a living hell.
S: And that is different from now in what way?
M: (sighing) I was…wrong about sentiment. (Sherlock blinks very slowly and briefly wonders if he hit his head on something.) It certainly cannot rule over logic, but…there is a place for it. It will make you stronger, Sherlock. John has made you stronger. (He sighs again.) He always will.
(The two men study one another. A sense of ease passes between them and a truce is struck without words. Sherlock’s mouth quirks into a small smile. He rises from his chair and turns to leave.)
Tumblr media
S: I know.
*                 *                    *                        *
(Sherlock and John share a spectacular meal at Angelo’s. John tucks into his favorite of prawn linguine and Sherlock actually eats all of his veal parmigiana. Angelo insists on a candle for added romance, as usual, and brings them a bottle of John’s favorite wine.
The two men laugh and talk and remember past cases. Neither one wants the evening to end, so John concedes quickly when Sherlock suggests they share dessert. However, the atmosphere changes as they eat a tiramisu. John grows thoughtful and quiet, not laughing as easily when Sherlock makes jokes or tells amusing stories. When only a portion of John’s half of the dessert remains, Sherlock places his fork next to the dessert plate and leans forward with his elbows on the table.)
Tumblr media
S: What’s troubling you, John?
J: Hm? Oh, I was just thinking about the case. Sylvia Piper and her children. They really were the center of her world.
S: Indeed. Worth killing for.
J: Right. (putting down his own fork and looking at his flatmate with a hesitant expression) Do you think you’ll ever feel that way? I mean, not… I mean, do you have any interest in being a father? (Sherlock opens his mouth, but John quickly cuts him off.) Not right now, obviously. There’s so much…but one day.
(Sherlock covers John’s hand where it lays on the table and gives it an affectionate squeeze.)
S: Of course. I would love to raise a child with you. (John’s eyes widen.) One day.
J: Me? (He jerks his hand away and straightens his spine, jaw clenching.)
S: (hesitantly) I thought such a plan would be to your liking. Am I wrong?
J: (angrily) It’s just an odd statement coming from a man who doesn’t want his relationship to evolve.
(Sherlock presses his lips together in a straight line. His mind quickly processes in search of the best way to express himself. This dinner is so much more than his proposal. He must undo the damage he has done with his foolishness before he can get to that. He knew he had hurt John terribly. His perpetual sadness attests to that, but Sherlock hadn’t a taste of John’s anger until now.)
S: I’m sorry I have hurt you.
J: (quickly) I know that, Sherlock. I just…I can’t…
(His eyes clamp shut as if in physical pain. He curls his lips inward.)
S: John…
(Sherlock begins, but is silenced when John’s hands are suddenly on the table, his eyes open. John begins to stand. Sherlock doesn’t know what he should say, but he knows what he wants to say and he must say it now before John turns and walks out of the restaurant.
He leaps to his feet and wraps his fingers around the smaller man’s arms. Both speak at the same time.)
J: I have to leave.
S: Don’t go.
(John’s furious and hurt eyes raise up to Sherlock’s face and see that he is pleading like never before.)
S: Please, John, just let me explain.

(Fuming and heartbroken, but unable to deny this man anything, John gets his arms free and sits again. He stares down at the table, his forearms folded on it in front of his body. Sherlock licks his lips and seats himself. He is leaning forward, elbows on the table so he can gesture with his hands. He takes in a deep breath and swallows. Sherlock cannot lose this man. This beautiful, kind, perfect man must be his forever. His eyes widen as that concept suddenly becomes a very real possibility. White, hot panic spreads through his mind. Oh, god. I can’t lose John. He exhales slowly to calm himself.)
S: I thought you were a weakness. That you would make me less objective, dull my senses. And I accepted that. Then Magnussen nearly killed you. (His eyes have a far away look.) I was so angry and scared. I lashed out at the easiest target and convinced myself that Mycroft was to blame, and that his love for Molly weakened him. (Focusing on John again, whose eyes are still on the table. His left hand clenching and flexing.) I was wrong. God, John, I was such a fool.
(John’s head snaps up. When their eyes meet, Sherlock uses his to give John all the love in his heart. Wishing, wanting to sweep his doctor up into his arms. Sherlock wets his own lips and continues.)
S: You have never been my weakness. You make me stronger, better. A better man, a better detective, a better… You make my mind clear and sharp. Just having you at a crime scene helps to center me and your expertise is invaluable.
J: (jaw still tight) And what about my sentiment? (his eyes bore into Sherlock) What about yours?
(An unexpected tear trickles from Sherlock’s eye. He had not realized his eyes were even filling, and now that he knows, he is not embarrassed.)
S: (without missing a beat) Priceless. (He swallows. His expression is completely open. He has nothing to hide.) I used to think being human made me weak. I tried to be as much like a machine as possible. As much like Mycroft as I could because he was efficient and intelligent, and he convinced me the lack of sentiment was the best sentiment.
(John keeps his eyes locked on Sherlock’s, waiting for the moment when the detective back-pedals and takes his place behind a curtain of apathy. John’s fury boils over as he just waits for the expected and yet, a part of him understands. How many times did he have to guard his emotions and keep his distance in the army? He would’ve been destroyed otherwise.
But he let some people in. And that’s what infuriates John. Sherlock resisted for years. They both did. But then he let John in, only to push him away after the ordeal with Magnussen. When Sherlock made it clear that he didn’t want to marry John now or ever, John had quickly made the decision to accept it. He knew he could never give up Sherlock, but found that living it was something else entirely. The pain, the sadness, the anger was almost unbearable. If Sherlock starts this, he has to finish it. Or John will have to. He will have to leave Baker Street and Sherlock. His life.
Suddenly John can’t listen anymore. He can’t hear those words. He can’t make that decision. Not now.)
Tumblr media
J: Sherlock. Sherlock, I can’t. I can’t do this. I can’t… (With tears in his eyes, John makes to stand, but his desperate flatmate grasps his wrists and crushes them on the table between them. John opens his mouth to protest.) Let go of me.
S: (intensely quiet, his eyes like silver flames) I love you. I am yours forever. With you, I am happy. I am complete. You make me human, John, and my humanity is the key I have always been missing. The one I have always searched for. Emotion, sentiment, caring. They are not defects found on the losing side. They are not disadvantages. They are… You are everything. You have given me everything.
(John is speechless. He stares at the man, wide-eyed as Sherlock gently releases his wrists. His hands glide to his suit coat and he pulls the ring box from his breast pocket. He delicately opens it and places it on the table before John.
John’s eyes are wider than they have ever been, his jaw slack with shock. Sherlock cups John’s hands in his own and looks deeply into his glorious, shining blue eyes.)
S: John, will you marry me?
(Air catches in John’s throat in a breathless gasp and tears fall down his cheeks. His voice is barely a whisper.)
J: Yes. Oh god, yes.
(Sherlock’s heart skips a beat. He quickly pulls the ring from the box and gets to his feet beside the table. John follows suit and stands up in front of him. They gaze at one another with wide eyes, unable to believe they are here and this is really happening. Eye contact is only broken when the tall man looks down at John’s hands and takes his left in his own, palm down. Sherlock slowly, gently slides the ring on John’s ring finger. It looks perfect on the tanned finger, glistening in the dim light of the restaurant.)
Tumblr media
(John’s eyes move away from the ring and slowly climb Sherlock’s torso until he meets his lover’s eyes once more. No, not lover. Fiance. Sherlock’s silver eyes sparkle down at John and he smiles brightly. Unable to contain it, John grins like an idiot. He touches Sherlock’s button-down, feeling the firm body beneath his fingertips. As if of their own volition, John’s hands slide up Sherlock’s body until the detective’s face is cupped in them. Sherlock’s arms are around John, his long fingers resting on the small of his back. Their lips come together quietly and move in a way that tells the two men they were always meant to touch and caress one another. John opens his just a little and nibbles Sherlock’s luscious lower lip. Sherlock smiles against the doctor’s mouth as the tip of a tongue deftly glides over said lip.)
S: (his eyes still closed, his deep voice a delicate whisper) I love you, John.
(Before John can answer, they hear a throat clearing that is unmistakably Angelo. They separate enough to put an inch or two between their bodies. John drops his hands and Sherlock releases the smaller man’s waist in favor of holding a hand. The two men turn toward Angelo.
With an apology for their display already forming on his lips, Sherlock begins to speak only to stop when he sees Angelo’s face. It is not one of irritation or embarrassment, but one of excited anticipation. Glancing at John and then back to the proprietor, Sherlock smiles genuinely.)
S: My dear friend, you are the first to know that John and I are engaged.
Angelo: (throwing his hands up) Oh! Oh, Sherlock, I am so happy! (He throws his arms around the slender man and squeezes tightly.) You, who have been my friend all these years. (Releasing him and putting a hand on John’s shoulder.) And you… (enveloping him in a bear hug, John lets out a little gasp) You make him so happy. I have always wanted that for Sherlock. Ever since he cleared me of going to prison.
(Angelo mercifully releases John, who can finally breath normally, and takes a step back to look at them. Sherlock looks mater-of-fact, but friendly.)
Tumblr media
S: You still went to prison.
Angelo: Eh. (shrugging, his smile broadening) But not for as long.
(Angelo insists they share a toast and they talk at length. The jolly man manages to tell some embarrassing stories about the world’s only consulting detective that John hasn’t heard before. When the duo finally leaves the restaurant and gets into a cab for home, it is after midnight.
John’s eyes fall to where he holds hands with his fiance and he lets out a contented sigh. Two of Sherlock’s fingers stroke John’s gently. John raises his gaze to see the detective smiling at him. When their eyes meet, the smile slowly fades. Sherlock’s eyes grow increasingly intense and heated. His expression is quickly that of a man who has stripped John bare, hungry and inflamed. John swallows and suddenly the cab can’t get to Baker Street fast enough.)

A Star Is Born-Again
As I predicted, A STAR IS BORN is a blockbuster hit, never mind the fact that it sends a terrible message to all the potential love addicts out there. (See my previous blog post on the subject here.) But I can’t be too hard on Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga. After all, my whole life I’ve been given horrible messages from star-crossed onscreen romances – messages that might not damage a reasonable person, but can send an unreasonable obsessive like myself pursuing a bad idea straight to the gates of insanity or death.
I’m not blaming the movies; much of this is in the eye of the beholder. One person can watch LEAVING LAS VEGAS and swear off drinking; another sits through the same screening and decides to grow up to be Nicolas Cage’s suicidal alcoholic or Elizabeth Shue’s self-destructive prostitute. Because they’re so, you know, tragic and misunderstood. And sexy; don’t forget sexy.
Tumblr media
Here, then, is a litany of cinematic woe for those unable to control and enjoy their love lives. The list is weighted for blockbusters and recent releases, because I only had so much space and it was too depressing to consider watching every Doris Day-Rock Hudson movie ever made. Feel free to chime in with your particular favorite.
Caution: Some spoilers ahead, but my guess is you’ve probably seen these movies already, maybe more than once. (Also note, a version of this column was previously printed in Substance Magazine.)
1. IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT (1934) A rebellious heiress and an out-of-work newspaperman fall for each other while she’s running away to elope with another man. “I don’t know very much about him, except that I love him,” says rich girl Claudette Colbert about penniless reporter Clark Gable. I still adore this movie classic, but I did finally figure out that relationships work better when you’re actually acquainted with the person.
2. LOVE STORY (1970) A rich boy and a poor girl fall in love as Harvard undergrads; he defies his family to marry her. Their perfect life is cut short by her fatal illness. “Love means never having to say you’re sorry,” young Ali McGraw tells young Ryan O’Neal, because if you truly love someone you will never hurt or disappoint them in the first place. This is a terrible lesson to teach a love addict; we already expect you to read our minds and then resent you when you can’t.
3. PRETTY WOMAN (1990) A wealthy businessman hires a prostitute to pose as his girlfriend at a social event, then falls in love with her. In the original script, the tart-with-a-heart (Julia Roberts) was tossed back onto the street when her hooker duties were over, and Richard Gere’s part was going to be played by Danny DeVito. But no, you want the fairy tale….
4. REALITY BITES (1994) A recent college grad has to decide between her erratic, creative housemate and an ardent, stable television executive. When someone tells you, “I may do mean things, and I may hurt you, and I may run away without your permission, and you may hate me forever…” believe them. They know themselves better than you do. Run. Even if he looks like Ethan Hawke, or she looks like Winona Ryder.
5. JERRY MAGUIRE (1996) A single mom and a volatile football player are the only ones who stand by a once-successful sports agent. “You complete me,” Tom Cruise tells Renee Zellweger. Oh, please. We are not half-people, flopping around the planet waiting for some perfect puzzle piece to make us whole. That way lies madness.
6. SIX DAYS SEVEN NIGHTS (1998) A Manhattan fashion journalist is stranded on a South Pacific island with a crusty bush pilot; danger and romance ensue. The Harrison Ford part in this opposites-attract romantic adventure has been played by everyone from Humphrey Bogart to Keanu Reeves. They all represent the fantasy fixer-upper. But how will Anne Heche’s thirtysomething magazine editor really feel in 10 years, stuck with a 66-year-old boyfriend and no running water?
7. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004) Joel and Clementine try to heal their broken hearts by literally forgetting about one another. There’s a phenomenon in recovery known as “euphoric recall.” The idea is that we only remember the good things about drinking and using, never the bad. Substitute “failed relationship” for “drinking and using,” and you’ve got yourself a Jim Carrey/Kate Winslet movie.
8. THE NOTEBOOK (2004) An elderly man reads to an Alzheimer’s patient out of a notebook. It’s the love story of a rich girl and a poor boy in 1940’s South Carolina. We all desire the devotion Gena Rowlands enjoys after 60 years of marriage. Sadly, your deliciously dramatic, obsessive, rebellious adolescent-type relationship generally burns out long before that. Ryan Gosling is no more likely to grow up to be James Garner than a red Ferrari is going to grow up into a reliable pick-up truck.
9. CRAZY STUPID LOVE (2011) A jilted husband asks a notorious womanizer to teach him how to pick up chicks, not realizing the guy has picked up his own daughter. This time, Ryan Gosling is a player. Always has been a player. Gives player lessons to other men. But one deep-and-meaningful night with Emma Stone and he instantly turns into the loyal lover you long for. In AA terms, that’s called denial: “Yes, but… this time, it will be different!”
10. SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK (2012) An ex-mental patient, hoping to reunite with his estranged wife, falls for a beautiful but disturbed young widow. No, pairing a depressive sex addict (Jennifer Lawrence) with a bipolar love addict (Bradley Cooper) does not make them both all better. Trust me; I’ve been there.
