There are a few things happen here has been just have money to eat out all the time I constantly encouraging him too and he's going to get moving cuz he has to go eat and it's difficult so you can probably sit down and eat something quick and then eat more we have a lot to talk about but two things they're important the pseudo empire is invading they are taking on a lot of them warlock and not leaving letting them have a break they're going after them pretty hard because they keep going after them. And they're going after areas right now in Florida they tried a little enough occasionally and don't win anything they are going up to their areas and they're taking them successfully the more like are going to try and lunch a major offensive soon it's going to be quite large they're going to have all sorts of stuff in it so we are getting ready to intercept some of it is too big and weird going to. ... The girl who was missing her arms and legs and it is a statement about these he said to invite you got me back together and she said me too and he says maybe it's an advanced form of leprosy and she said no and is mad. Cuz other stuff happening yeah I helped him find the line. There are a lot of people here are cranky and really over the top and John remillard and son are making attempts the sun drove up to my husband with a van on the main road and they're going 30-40 miles an hour pulls up to him acting like he knew him and my husband doesn't know who he is just recognize the fan and just stared at him and drove off and it was not very pleasant. And Tommy f is trying to get our son to take him to Tampa but then Tommy have backs out every time. There's a huge number of them I think they're still just living off people and it's really not how it goes.

What kind of sick of there a little cribs and dumb looks but seriously there's some huge events happening and they're going around like little idiots still and still it's not that bad could be worse so there are a couple things happening that's one it's the invasion tonight but it is a planned event. There's another event going on

-people are upset with the ships above all of them and they saw was happening in Worcester area and are trying to figure out what to do it's a big event there's a lot of people checking and they're going to try stuff

-you're tired of Tommy F and his ships you want to move them out and they're trying to figure out what to do there too

-there's a few other people who are trying and it's going to be a growing movement when they find out what he's doing is trying to get rid of both parties and since the deal however we are gaining territory.

-we have roughly 30% of Florida the max of 20% foreigners out of 10% and pseudo empire has 20% and warlock have 20% and it's a mixed bag and the invite all the time the constantly fighting each other. We're gaining territory and by this evening and that'll be from the warlock and we're going to take it because we're tired of people

+there are other things happening and they're pursuing the ships and suddenly warmed up today and they're trying to check what it is and think it's wind currents and that's what it is the engines are shut down again so they don't expect them to leave the pattern is that they don't shut down but they apparently shut down that's what they say Olympus says that they have not shut down and are still in process of takeoff it's just a lull and they're going to turn it up

-there's other things happening there's a lot of smaller girls bothering my husband and at night and more and they don't care if the math is and they're in trouble and they know it and I couldn't get ugly and we have to be ready for that and our women say we are ready

-we're buying companies and we are gaining interest in the actual stock exchanges daily we are purchasing large companies today and some of them are ready and we're asking if they're actually ready before meeting let's see what you think so so we're going to do that we have a lot of stuff to do when they're holding it up we have several designs out there for bikes and cars we're going to start duplicating them because they're so damn slow and they're not doing anything and they say they're doing it on purpose

-another note the firebird has attracted a lot of attention the max are agreeing that is the car that is the plan that's where he's going to go it's causing a lot of problems and their solutions that are coming up it's forcing a lot of people there and here they have to be at both and they're going to try and just keep doing that there are other things to be concerned about and they're pretty big but this is causing a huge disruption and the video I am titanium is coming up and any day now and then the watchmen movie series begins is there a couple things that took off when one of them is there is a low in the snow and it's gone right now as I put in half on the ground so we are watching out for that it could be in a couple days it melts and probably is the day

-couple of things they're bothering me all the time and I need help and I hope people are understanding it's nerve racking and you're real and goddess wife and my family side they're both my family side but paternal their responding and I appreciate that

Drunken Pursuit

pairing: the mandalorian x reader (kind of platonic, kind of not)

The familiar robust stench wafts into your face once you open the door to the cantina you’ve grown so fond of— Stale liquor, cheap cologne and sweaty bodies.

As you slyly stalk around the bar in the middle of the room, your eyes roam the countless people drinking inside. You’re not sure if you’re looking for a particular person or an empty seat to slide into.

When a large horned humanoid stumbles away from the bar with the stench of alcohol on its body, you slip your way into the now free spot.

Your pants stick to the tacky leather stool as a bartender slides around to take your order, “One blood sour and two shots of mijura.” You slide the memorized amount of credits to the bartender and the droid begins to shake up your drinks.

It’s become a routine for you to visit this hole-in-the-wall at late hours of the night, but since you’ve finished catching your bounties for the day, you’ve decided to take a break in the daylight.

You down your drinks quicker than anyone around you, the alcohol buzzes through your veins almost instantly and clouds the nerve-endings throughout your body splendidly.

Soon you’re blindly shoving credits over the bar, the people around you buy you drinks as you do the same for them. The usually annoyingly loud music you can’t understand begins to sound like the best beat to dance to. “Come on!”

You decide to grip your neighbors wrists to pull them onto your the makeshift dance floor. You can’t help but sway your hips as your feet somehow expertly tap to the beat.

A huge obvious smile is plastered on your face as one of your new friends, grabs your hands to spin your bodies in circles playfully.

Maybe it’s the alcohol, but you feel confidence like no other. Shot after shot and song after song. Your stomach begins to turn and flutter uncomfortably. This is how your night usually ends.

As quickly as possible, you tug your hands away from person in front you to sprint to the bathroom. The handle jiggles but doesn’t open. Fuck, it’s locked. Someone behind the door squeals obscenities in a language you don’t understand.

The floor is your only option. Your back curls as you hunch over with your hands on your knees. Your abdomen tightens as the burning contents hurl from your stomach onto the already messy floor. You’ll have to leave a big tip.

You wipe your mouth with the back of your hand, sniffling as you attempt to calm the tears and snot flowing down your face. “Disgusting.” You mutter to yourself.

As you hobble into the main area, you slap the rest of your pocket money onto the bar and head outside. Unfortunately it’s still quite bright outside, causing your body to seize from the sensitivity of your eyes. You blindly reach for the surface of the dome shaped exterior wall, running your fingers over the rough texture blindly.

You lean your back against the wall as the cool wind whips against your skin, calming you slightly. As you take long deep breaths and listen to the ships fly overhead, you feel a slight tug on the hem of your cargo pants.

Is your brain hallucinating now? It’s just the wind, you tell yourself.

The sensation happens once again so you gently slide your hand toward your blaster on your hip before you snap your head toward your feet. The grip on the stock of your gun loosens when you see the odd child-like creature cooing at you with their exceedingly large eyes.

It’s green and adorably fuzzy with large ears. The child is wrapped in brown fabric with a little tint of pink covering it’s cheeks and teeny nose. You notice a little black bowl sitting in it’s free hand full of some sort of liquid.

“Oh hello.” You giggle as it’s tiny arms reach up for you, now the soup is spilled onto the ground. Of course, you can’t decline the cute offer of holding such a delicate species.

Your arms swoop down to carefully pick up the baby, surprisingly heavier than you thought it would be. You can’t take your eyes off of it, a smile grows on your face as it giggles at you.

You bounce the thing on your hip like a baby, it seems to enjoy it from the coos of awe muttered at you. “Wheres your mom or dad, hm?” You tickle the child’s belly causing a small laugh to escape from their body.

Suddenly, a shadow covers the sun above as it looms over your smaller frame. Nervousness bubbles in your chest for a moment, then your motherly instinct kicks in as you hold the kid tighter to your chest.

As your eyes slowly rake up the expanse of the person in front of you— The shiny silver armor, the hidden weapons in the steel plates upon their arms, and the helmet. The T shaped pitch black visor and the same matching Beskar surface.

A mandalorian.

You instantly recognize who it is, well what it is. Your blood runs cold as you back up against the wall as far as possible, wishing the barrier would envelope your body to aid in your escape.

“Give me the kid.” The Mandalorian speaks. His tone is menacing under the voice modulator, monotone and deep.

You gulp as the child looks between you and him and continues to stay cuddled to your chest. “Why should I?” Your voice slurs slightly and you hiccup.

The statue in front of you takes a step closer, cornering you into the wall. Your eyes dart around in attempt to find ways to flee. “Don’t.” He threatens as he’s even closer to you now.

You gulp as you stare up at your own warped reflection in his eyes, “What are you going to do with it? You’re a bounty hunter... like me. How do I know you’re not going to sell the poor kid off?” Your breathing shudders when his forearm comes to press against your chest, now pinning you. He is dangerously close to your neck and his face is much too close to yours.

“He is mine. Now hand him over.” Your arms outstretch as much as you could as you refuse to look at your own reflection in his helmet. He grips the baby protectively and brings him to his chest.

A soft relieved sigh crackles from the helmet. The green thing murmurs incoherently and settles against his armor as he tucks it into a sack resting on his hip.

The tall man turns toward you once more, angry and close in proximity. “Why were you holding him? Were you trying to take him?” His voice booms as one of his hands slam next to your head.

A few drunken idiots stumble from the entrance, talking gibberish and laughing. The Mandalorian swings his head to the side to stare intensely at them as they walk by.

When the pair notices the Beskar-cladded man hovering over your shuttering body, their mouths clamp shut, eyes avert to the ground and they speed walk away.

Stars! You need to be saved. Fucking assholes.

The bounty hunter in front of you turns his attention back to you, “I-I—I promise, I was—wasn’t trying to kidnap h-him...” Your voice stutters helplessly, the alcohol doesn’t help your brain as it already is working slowly.

He glances down at the alien child who is peeking over the rim of the bag nervously, “He gr-grabbed my pant leg. He was wandering... He was wandering... by himself. Why was he by himself?” You suddenly gain confidence as you question the man.

“You’re interrogating me when your kid was wandering around by himself?” You scoff as you cross your arms over your chest, “What a great dad. You want to protect him? Well you didn’t. I could have stolen him, but at least I’m not a crazy asshole, right?” You grumble as you mumble obscenities under your breath.

The man scoffs under his helmet as he leans backward from being close to you, his arms lifts from your body. “You’ve got a point.” He grumbles in defeat, one of his gloved hands rest on the bulging sack which the child is in.

“Exactly. Now if you’d let me go, I’d appreciate it.” You go to push yourself off of the wall but your knees buckle which causes you to fly forward.

Your forehead slams against his steel chest plate, making a loud bang echo from the contact. You groan as the pain radiates through your head, your vision goes blurry as if you were drinking once again.

You stumble backward to fall, your arms reach for something sturdy to rest against but two hands grip your shoulders to steady you. Your body is slowly leaned back onto the curved wall of the building.

A sound almost like a chuckle emits from the Mandalorian, “Ouch.” You mumble as your hand goes to your forehead to feel the bump already forming under your skin.

You open your scrunched eyes to see your fingertips are lightly covered in crimson, “Is-is that blood?” You gasp softly as the man brings his hands to your head to inspect the cut. He pushes your hair from your eyes and gently peels the strands off the wet surface of your skin.

“It’s small. Might need sutured.” He sighs as he looks down at the baby who is now curious of what just happened.

“I’m assuming your system is full of alcohol which makes your blood thinner.” He grumbles, “Come on. Follow me.”

Your vision is still slightly blurry, either from your new concussion or maybe your own tears. Follow a Mandalorian? Fuck no.

“Excuse me? Follow you? How...How am I...” A new wave of dizziness overcomes your body as you stumble forward and gulp down the bile rising in your throat, “Am... I supposed to... Follow you..?”

The silver armor fades in and out of your sight, his image is distorted as you sway from side to side.

The alcohol has finally gotten to your brain, it’s your time. You’re going to die. Hitting your head on Beskar (the strongest metal in the universe) and drinking yourself into oblivion is not a good combination. Especially mixed along with your blood on your hands, it’s not one of your strengths.

His arms reach out to you to hold you steady once again, he opens your drooping eyelids to look at your dilated pupils. “You’ve got a concussion.” He lets out a sniffle as he leans in to smell your breath, obviously smelling the liquor. 

You fall forward in a slump, slamming your face against his Beskar once again. He stands there awkwardly with a random girl resting on his chest. His arms hook under your arms to drag you to the nearby alleyway. He carefully places you on the ground, sitting upright with your back against the wall.

He glances at your pockets, seeing a flashing red light through the tan fabric. He opts to fish whatever is is out. Finally gripping the disc shakes object, a tracking beacon.

“For the kid?” He mumbles with a sigh. He glances to see the blaster in your pocket.

He debates in his own head on whether or not he should leave you here or kill you. He grumbles frustratingly as the kid squeaks angrily in his pouch, “I know, I know.” He groans.

He drops the beacon to the ground then stomps on it to shatter it to pieces, the wiring sparks and with another stomp it puffs out. His hands reach down to scoop you up, throwing your drunk self over his shoulder before making his way back to the Razor Crest. He can’t help but think of how idiotic this idea is.

The stares of the passerby’s don’t make the Mandalorian nervous, rather more smug than anything. He knows his image is powerful.

Once aboard the ship, he drops you on his cot that he pulls out from the wall. He locks your limp wrists together with handcuffs so you don’t attempt to hurt anyone or escape the moving ship.

He scoops out the kid once in the cockpit, sitting him in his floating bassinet as he clicks a few buttons to ready the ship for departure. His hand grips the throttle to lift it into the sky. 

The jolt startles you awake. A loud groan falls from your lips from the splitting headache. You roll around in the bed, not realizing it’s not your own which causes you to fall onto the floor.

As you attempt to catch yourself, you realize your arms are bound together. “The fuck?!” You yelp loudly as look at your surroundings. Terror runs through your veins when you realize you’ve been abducted.

The ship hits hyper speed, causing your body to roll like a hot dog across the floor. You let out a loud screech as you kick your feet wildly in front of you so you wouldn’t ram into the wall, “Let me go right now or I will rip you to shreds!”

The stomping above your head shuts you up as the person climbs down the ladder. The beskar cladded man makes you gulp with wide eyes.

“You?” You growl as you attempt to push yourself up from the ground but you’re unsuccessful.

“You’re awake.” He stands to the side with his arms crossed over his chest as he watches you struggle.

You screech through your clenched teeth as your abdominal muscles fail to pick your body off the ground. “Let me go, you fucker. I’m serious.” Your face is flushing red with anger by the second.

He chuckles as he walks toward you, planting one foot on either side of your body now standing above you. “Feisty, hm?” He presses a button on his arm to unlock the cuffs around your wrists.

The metal hisses as it drops onto the floor next to you. You scramble to your feet, standing in front of the large man with an angry face. “You took me.” You poke your finger against his chest. Your nail makes a ‘ding’ sound against the metal.

“I did.” He hums simply as he stares down at you through the same black visor.

“Why?”

“Because.”

“Because, why?”

“You had a bounty for the kid.”

“So you put me on the same ship with the kid?”

“Yup.”

“You make absolutely no sense, Mandalorian.” You huff as you begin to pace the belly of the ship frantically as you talk to yourself under your breath. How will you get home? Is he going to kill you? What about your life?

He chuckles under his breath, the modulator illuminates the lovely sound. No, stop. For all you know he could be a creature under all of that.

“You’re gonna stick with me for a while. I’m going to need your help. I know you’re strong. Just gotta keep the alcohol away from you.”

Your head snaps toward him with a look of bewilderment, “Stuck with you? And—and the green baby?” You almost laugh in disbelief. He’s really kidnapping you.

Mando nods his head, you can almost sense a smile on his face.

And so you do. The child and the Mandalorian slowly grow more fond of you as  as months go by- as you do with them. Sometimes, you’ll catch yourself gazing in awe at how well he takes care of his tiny elderly child. You’ll never want to leave because the irreversible attachment that has cemented them both into your heart.

Countless bounty hunts by his side, combat and capturing. Sometimes, well most of the time, you’re forced to sit on the sidelines with the kid in the Razor Crest because it’s too ‘dangerous.’ 

Of course, you’ll whine and complain, but you always have more fun with the little squirt anyway. 

After the first few months of living with them, you meet his friends along the way, Cara Dune, Greef Carga and a few others. Mando slowly opens up to you, letting you know his name and where he came from. Eventually, you find out he’s more human than you thought. Tiny bits of tanned skin peek from underneath his pile of armor when he stretches or moves; it makes you feel a certain way. (Especially, if he walks around the ship in regular clothing and only his helmet,) You’ve grown quite a fascination with his bare hands. 

Through everything, you and Din are each other’s shoulder to lean on. Even when countless people attempt to take the kid away from you both, which crushes both your hearts. Maybe, you found your own little family. The universe brought you both together for a reason; to protect the child from the Empire. If you weren’t drinking that day, or if the kid never greeted you unexpectedly—Your life wouldn’t be where it is now. You’re content and happy.

Arguments still happen though. Mando and you are both stubborn creatures. No matter how bad it gets, he will always be yours as you belong to each other unofficially.

Whether it’s platonic, or a little bit more than that...

“Barnaby.” 

The dappled grey Norfolk Roadster whickered, bobbing his head up and down as you said the name, a large smile on your face. 

“Barnaby.” Arthur’s voice held a hint of amusement, almost a laugh, as he repeated the name. The stablehand smiled brightly, leading the horse towards the center of the stable.

“I like it,” you hummed, taking the reins from the stable hand and leading your brand new horse out to the sunny Valentine street. “Doesn’t he look like a Barnaby?”

“If y’say so,” Arthur hummed, cigarette between his lips. 

“Take care now!” the stablehand bidded as you left the building.

The Norfolk had put you back almost $200. Plus a brand new saddle, blanket, tack, and saddlebags.  You had lost the saddle, and all the gear as well when you left Eugene, nursing a dislocated shoulder on the back of Arthur’s horse, and since then, had been borrowing horses from the camp or riding with Arthur into town when needed. You missed the freedom of having your own horse, however. Since you had turned sixteen, you had always had your own horse to care for. 

“Thank you, Arthur,” you started, petting your hand along Barnaby’s neck. 

“Quit thankin’ me. I ain’t done nothin’.”

You smiled, running your hand over Barnaby’s neck some more, fingers toying with his long mane. “You helped me, patched me up when I hurt my shoulder, took care of Eugene … brought me into town, so I could buy a horse. You’ve helped plenty.”

“Agh, that ain’t worth thankin’ me for,” he groaned, running a hand up into his hair as he removed his hat. 

You sighed, pulling yourself into your saddle, adjusting the skirt you wore as you settled, reins in hand. “When are you gonna realize you’re a good man, Arthur. I mean, even as kids you always kicked yourself.”

“Maybe one day.”

He looked away, down to his hands holding the reins as Calliope shifted beneath him, hoofing at the dirt. You could see the self deprecation oozing off his shoulders as he sat in the saddle.

“One day, I’ll make you realize it,” you groaned, kicking Barnaby into a trot. “I’ll meet ya back at camp.”

“Miss Harlow!”

You jumped, shifting to lean against your arm as you looked over your shoulder. You had been quietly reading a book against a tree, Jack sitting beside you making flower chains. Miss Grimshaw was striding forward, the stern look of your mother figure ever recognizable. She rarely used your name; you had grown used to her calling you dear or dearie, and the mere sound of it always had you at attention. 

“Yes, Miss Grimshaw?”

The stern gaze lessened, her features softening as she neared, looking down to you with a small smile. “Dutch wants to speak with you, dear,” she smiled, running a hand over Jack’s hair as he held a flower chain up to her.

“Thank you, Mister Marston,” she smiled, bending at the waist to accept the gift. 

“Miss Harlow’s got one too!” Jack smiled. “And I made one for momma!”

“Go on, then,” you smiled, urging the child in the direction of camp. “Your momma’s gonna love it.”

You rose to your feet, watching Jack run off to Abigail as Miss Grimshaw tutted. “Off with you, now,” she urged. 

You smiled, and headed for Dutch’s tent. Arthur, Bill, and Charles were sitting around outside, listening as Dutch spoke, cigar in hand. 

“Mornin’ boys,” you smiled, folding the book into your hands as you stepped up. 

“Ah, our little doe, Miss Harlow,” Dutch smiled. “The mastermind for this robbery!”

“You found this out?” Bill asked a bit incredulously. You had grown used to the men viewing you as nothing more than a wash maid over the years. Dutch knew better. You may have worn a skirt, but you were just as valuable as an enforcer and scout as Arthur and Charles. 

“Yes I did,” you hummed, jutting your chin up. “Ready to head out?”

“You would be correct, dear,” Dutch smiled. “Good luck. I trust you can handle these men.”

Charles and Arthur smirked as they stood, starting for their horses. You met Bill’s eyes, smiling as you stepped past, setting your book on the camp table. “Of course I can, Dutch!” you smiled back to the gang leader. “Keep up, Williamson!” 

Arthur helped you onto his horse, settling you behind him on the saddle. “So, how do you want to play this?” 

You glanced over to Charles and Bill. “The man who gave me the information said it’d be guarded pretty well,” you started. “I’ll play the damsel, get them to stop, and you three take out the guards.”

“How much is supposed to be on this coach?” Bill asked over his shoulder.

 “It’s payroll for some shipping company in Saint Denis,” you answered. “Driving through the Heartlands to Lemoyne. From the sounds of it: a lot. Should be able to catch it just over the state line.”

“When the shootin’ starts --” Arthur started.

“Run for cover. I know,” you interjected with a scoff. “This ain’t my first robbery, Arthur.”

You felt him chuckle, your hands placed on his sides to steady you in the saddle. “No, it ain’t.” 

The hill you stopped on overlooked a main road, the Lemoyne state sign off to your left. You dropped from Arthur’s horse, stepping up to the ridge as you looked up the road. “Alright, boys, they’re comin’ through,” you hummed, turning and smiling to the men. “Wish me luck!”

“I got a girl in Berryville! Can’t be screwed cuz she’s too damn ill! I don’t go down there no more. There’s a blue horse laying outside her door!” 

You smiled brightly, leaning into Karen’s side as the two of you sat on the log in front of the fire, both of you leaning heavily against the other, a bottle of whiskey being passed between the two of you. Your voices were loud enough to be heard throughout camp, but somehow, even in the drunken haze the two of you had fallen into, the others hadn’t told you to shut the hell up. Yet.

You and the boys had returned that afternoon after robbing the payroll stage, pockets full and a smile gracing Bill Williamson’s face as he admitted you did a good job. 

It was Karen’s bright idea to drink and have fun. It had been a while, and you agreed it had to help lift the camp’s spirits somewhat, especially when Trelawney’s information about Sean being moved by bounty hunters had entered the camp gossip stream earlier that day. 

“No, no!” you laughed, waving a hand in front of your face as you screwed up the line, laughing raucously with Karen. “I got a girl in Berryville!”

“Can’t get it in cuz she won’t stay still!” Karen finished before taking another deep swig of whiskey.

Arthur sighed, leaning on his elbows at the wooden table. The poker game had dissolved almost an hour ago, cards and chips stowed away. Dutch’s tent had been closed, but the lamp was still lit, and those still awake lazed around the fires, watching the stars. “Shut them up, please,” John sighed as he landed in the seat beside Arthur. 

“Give it a try,” Arthur smirked, turning from watching your duet with Karen. “You and I both know that bottle will be thrown at our heads.”

“It’s one in the mornin’,” John groaned, leaning against the table. 

Arthur groaned, pushing from the table with an agreeing nod. “Alright, alright,” he waved Marston off as he stood. 

You were practically laying against Karen’s shoulder, watching the dying fire as you sang mismatched verses of O, Mollie. 

“They say I drink whiskey, my money’s my own! And them that don’t like me can leave me alone … ” You laughed, hiccupping into your hand as Karen hummed along.

“Alright, ladies,” Arthur’s voice startled you as he stepped up, reaching for the bottle of whiskey in your hand. “It’s gettin’ real late.”

“I’ll eat when I’m hungry,” you carried on, a large smile on your face, hand tightening on the bottle of whiskey as he tried to take it away. “I’ll drink when I’m dry! And when I get thirsty ... “ you trailed off, watching as Arthur successfully pried the bottle from your hand and dropped it to the ground. “I’ll … I … forgot the words ...”

Arthur laughed, ducking his head with a small shake of disbelief as he watched you look around your seat for something your drunken brain made up. Karen hiccupped beside you, pushing to her feet. “Goodnight, Mister Morgan!” she smiled, voice much louder than normal, as she leaned into his side and bopped her finger to his nose. “Goodnight!” 

Arthur caught her around the waist as she stepped by, guiding her until she started to walk towards her tent. “Alright, come on,” he started, reaching down for your arm. 

You stumbled as you got to your feet, leaning against his chest with a hand laid over his suspender strap. “I think … I’m drunk,” you laughed, pushing off of Arthur as you tried to step away. 

Arthur’s arm wrapped around you. “Again,” he sighed, shaking his head. “Ain’t ever gon’ be surprised when the two of ya are together. Drinkin’ the camp dry.”

You laughed, turning to face him as he neared, wrapping his arm around your middle. “You should join us sometime, Arthur!” you started, jabbing your index finger into his chest to punctuate your words. “Have some fun! Stop fretting over robberies … and Dutch’s words … and us girls.”

“I don’t fret,” Arthur argued. “But you are sloshed, sweetheart. Time for bed.”

You pouted, stumbling as you stepped away from Arthur. “Rrriiiigggghhhttt,” you droned, waving a hand in the air as you walked. “Frettin’ over me … runnin’ after Mary … helpin’ raise Jack … always frettin’.”

Arthur opened his mouth to speak, but closed it as he watched you. Stumbling forward, hand landing against the bark of the large oak tree, you bent over at the waist, vomiting up your stomach contents into the dirt. 

“Alright, that’s it,” he sighed, stepping up and pulling your hair out of the way. “Ya need t’ sleep. And eat. Come on.”

“See,” you started, wiping your chin on your sleeve. “You’re frettin’ again.”

“Sure.”

He guided you to your tent, making you sit down on the edge of your cot before standing and producing a chunk of bread from his satchel, wrapped in an embroidered handkerchief. “Eat.” He didn’t order, but even in your drunken haze, you could hear the sternness in his tone; the caring nature that was Arthur Morgan. “You’re gonna have a hell of a headache in the mornin’.”

You picked at the bread, chewing on it slowly as you sat on your cot, head already pounding. “I … heard ya saw her … Mary … in town.”

Arthur nodded, standing at the opening of your tent. “Yeah, I did,” he answered. “And her brother, Jamie.”

“She was always nice,” you hummed, tossing the half eaten chunk of bread onto the small wooden crate acting as a table and reaching for your small pillow. 

“Yeah,” he sighed. “Get some sleep,” he added after a moment, pulling the blanket over your shoulder as you slumped onto your pillow, snores almost immediately filling the silence of the tent.

“Son of a bitch,” you groaned, leaning bodily against the support pole of your tent. 

Arthur glanced up from his spot by the cookfire, bending at his waist to pour himself a cup of coffee. You stood against your tent, hand placed over your eyes as the morning sunlight hit you. Your hair and clothing was disheveled from a drunken sleep, and the pounding in your head was worse than Uncle’s snoring. 

“Mornin’, sleepin’ beauty,” Arthur smiled, stepping up and holding out his coffee to you. 

“Shut up, Arthur,” you groaned, taking the cup. 

“Strauss should have some tonic for that headache o’ yours. Or I could go see if Pearson’s got any fresh offal for ya …”

At your visible retch, Arthur chuckled and trailed off. You covered your mouth, wiping the coffee from your lip with the back of your hand before looking up to glare at the man in front of you. 

“You’re mean.”

He shrugged, taking the now empty cup from you. “Could say I’m frettin’ over ya ‘cause you drank Uncle under the table last night.”

You groaned, shoving the heels of your hands into your eyes. “Shut up, Arthur.”

He chuckled heartily, relaxing back as he hooked his thumbs into his belt. “I’m sure it’ll happen again,” he smirked, nodding to the main campfire where Karen sat with Javier and John. “We’re headin’ out to find Sean.”

You managed to chuckle, squinting up at him in the morning sun. “He’ll have the entire camp drunk if you bring him back.”

“Almost a guarantee,” Arthur smirked. 

You stepped past him, patting a hand against his shoulder. “You’re frettin’ over us all again,” you mumbled as you stepped past him. 

“Only you,” he countered. “Better eat something for that hangover.”

“I know,” you groaned. “I’ve been drunk before.”

“It ain’t a camp secret, sweetheart.”

You looked up to him, a small smile lighting your face. “You’re mean,” you repeated, with a small chuckle. “But you’re … right. I guess. Go get Sean back, Mister Morgan. Fret over someone else for a bit.”

“Will do,” he smiled.

Drenched and wet thanks to the rain and thunderstorm, Dipper entered the Temple of the Gods in the middle of the night for some privacy. He was immediately faced with a giant statue of someone who was more of a fable to him than a belief: Ruler of the Gods and god of Intelligence and Ingenuity, the six-fingered immortal Stanford.

With his large stature on a throne fit for a king, his square chin, flowing toga, and stern look, Dipper felt a little intimidated by the ruler of the gods. He entered the temple quietly and moved his focus to the paintings and vases on both the left and right walls. Stories and legends were told and Dipper happily followed the fables down a hall, on the right of the giant statue, and into a huge room full of more statues and paintings and vases.

“Wow,” He breathed, his voice echoed, and he moved to the center of the room and rested on his knees. Got to start somewhere, right? “I pray my pleas be heard in this place.” Dipper prayed. “Please, someone tell me who I am, where I belong.”

“Wow, look at you!” A cheerful voice rang, making Dipper jump to his feet and look around wildly. “You look just like me! We’re like twins! Oh, wait.” And then there was laughter.

“Hello?” The twelve-year-old boy called. “Who’s there?”

“Oh, right, sorry.” The voice said, but Dipper still had no clue where it was coming from. “Hi! I’m Mabel! I’m a muse! Well, muse in training. Still working some stuff out, but so are you! Go figure!”

“A muse?” Dipper repeated. “A goddess of the arts?”

“You got it!”

“So… where are you?”

“Try looking down at the art, genius.” The voice giggled and he looked down at a vase with a girl his age waving at him. The painting on the vase was waving at him. “Hi!”

Dipper yelled and fell on his feet, scooting away. “What the…?!”

“What, never seen a vase before?” Mabel giggled and twirled around. “Pretty cool, right? Hold on, let me find something bigger to work with, I’m cramped in here.”

“I-I-I don’t understand.” Dipper scurried to his feet and watched Mabel’s painted form move from one vase to another. “Y-Y-You said… D-Do you know who I am?”

“Course I do!” Mabel said from a skinny vase, then the tile floor, then a painted pillar, still finding a comfortable place to talk. “Well, I only learned about you a few weeks ago, but I always knew something fishy was going on. It’s pretty sad, no wonder Grunkle Ford didn’t wanna talk about it, but now you’re old enough to know the truth and I think I can help you!”

On a painting the same size as Dipper, the girl appeared and popped her back and twirled, feeling her new space. “Ah, much better. Hi! Still kinda scared?” She asked kindly, though she was bouncing and giggling.

Dipper smiled. Mabel the Muse did look a lot like him. Same eyes, same button nose, same hair. The only difference really was the fact that one was male and one was female. Dipper bet that if Mabel cut her hair to match his they would be identical. “No, not really.”

Mabel calmed down a little and said sincerely, “Glad to hear that, brother.”

“Brother?!” Dipper gasped and stared at her with wide eyes. “I… I have… I’m…”

“Yup!” Mabel cheered from inside the painting. “Surprise! You got a twin! Now tell me EVERYTHING! What’s your favorite food? What’s your favorite color? What’s your favorite animal? Do you like sports? Do you wanna be my friend?!” She asked all quickly.

“Now, hold on, hold on.” Dipper said, trying to piece this together. “If… If you’re my sister, that would make me…”

“A god.”

“A god… A GOD?!”

“Hey, you’re the one who wanted answers, Dip-Dip.” Mabel said with a shrug. “BTW, Dipper is a way better name than Mason, good choice.”

“Uh, thanks.” Dipper raised an eyebrow. “How do I know it’s true? I mean… I’m not a god.”

“Well, okay. No, you’re not. But only cuz someone stole you from us and turned you mortal. See, that’s why you’re down on Earth and not up here with us.”

Dipper shook his head. “I’m sorry, but… but this doesn’t make sense.”

Mabel giggled and gave him her Skepticals. “C’mon, bro-bro, ever wondered why you’re super strong and super smart? Ever wondered where you got your necklace?” And Mabel pulled out her’s from around her neck and showed him her name and symbol.

Dipper stared, slowly pulling his matching one out and looking at it. This was crazy. This was stupid. There was no way Dipper was a god, had a family that actually wanted him, but… but…

Mabel had no real gain as to lying to him, not that Dipper saw. Maybe he was stupid for buying it, but just this once Dipper wanted to feel like he belonged somewhere. So he took in a deep breath and said shakingly, “I… I think I believe you.”

Mabel smiled and then gasped. “Oh! I forgot! I have something for you.” She reached behind her back and pulled out a book, a navy blue journal with a golden forest on it, filled with beautiful pinetrees. “This is yours. Grunkle Ford kept it safe for you.” And the painting pushed it through and Dipper was shocked when a real-life journal was being held out to him.

He took it and smiled down at that beautiful cover. A twinge of remembrance came through him, but he didn’t dare believe it.

“Uncle Fiddleford says Grunkle Ford gave you that when we were born. And he gave me this music box.” Mabel pulled the box out and wind it to hear the music. She hummed and asked, “Isn’t it pretty?”

Dipper bit his lip. Okay he definitely remembered that lullaby. “I remember…” He whispered to himself, and then asked his sister, “Wait, Grunkle Ford? Isn’t y-y-your great-uncle…?”

“Stanford, yeah.” Mabel said proudly with a grin. “He’s your grunkle, too! He’s the best! He misses you, like a lot, since you can’t live on Olympus with us. He tries not to show it, but I can tell.”

Dipper sighed. This was great, he had a family, but what was the point if he couldn’t be with them. “And you guys can’t do anything?”

“We can’t,” Mabel answered with a grin. “But you can!”

“I can?” Dipper repeated, allowing himself to believe it. The evidence was overwhelming. “What is it? I’ll do anything to have a family again! Name it and it’s half-done!”

“If you can become a true hero on Earth then your godhood will come back!” Mabel cheered excitedly.

“Okay, great!” Dipper replied. “Uh… How do I do that?”

Mabel’s face suddenly dropped. “You know what, I have no idea.”

“Mabel!”

“Well, hey! I’m not the god of all-knowing, am I?” She laughed, then gave the matter some serious thought. “I heard a rumor that there was a Trainer of Heroes on an island… Crete? No, Paros. A Trainer of Heroes on Paros. He should be able to help you.”

“Got it!” Dipper punched the air and said proudly, “I can do it! I’ll become a true hero so I can come home!”

“That’s the spirit!” Mabel cheered. “I know you can do it! Go on out there!”

Dipper started to run out of the room, but he stopped at the doorway and turned, looking at his long-lost sister gloomily. “I… I don’t wanna say goodbye.”

“Aw, Dipper,” Mabel sighed happily and pointed to the journal in his hands. “Remember, I’m a muse! If you wanna talk to me, just draw a picture or create something in your book and I’ll be there.”

“Can’t I beseech you? Can’t you come see me?” Diaper asked; he had been taught that gods can pretty much do whatever they wanted.

“Believe me, I’d love to.” Mabel huffed and blew some loose hair out of her eyes. “Grunkle Ford won’t let me leave Olympus; he’s convinced he’ll lose me, too.”

“Oh.”

“But don’t worry!” Mabel encouraged. “I know you can do it! I believe… oh crud!” And she was gone. She must have been caught doing something she wasn’t supposed to be doing.

Dipper laughed and hurried out of the temple and was on his way for Paros.

Out at sea, Dipper looked for a way to the island. Though he was super strong, he doubted he was strong enough to swim all that way. No, he would probably have to wait for a ship to come by and to offer work in exchange for a ride. The boy walked alongside the same as seagulls screeched above him, when something out of the corner of his eye caught his attention.

At the mouth of a small cave, a sail flew in the breeze. Dipper grinned and grabbed some old rope and began to pull. Up from the dark cave and the damp sand was an old, busted sailboat with its name scratched out by a sword. Dipper grinned at the sailboat and examined it, trying to find a hole or a deficiency, but found none. Why would someone leave a perfectly good boat?

Dipper pulled the boat up onto the water and climbed on. He was beyond pleased to find it floated and he sailed onward for his goal.

After a few hours of peaceful sailing, Dipper came across a rocky island covered in pinetrees and fog. It was cold and unwelcoming, but the kind of place a Trainer of Heroes would swell, to test the bravery of hopeful young trespassers. Dipper quickly docked the sailboat and began to explore, a little surprised to find a triangular house on the top of a small hill, right outside the woods and a few safe feet away from the sea. The boy decided to try his luck there, but as he approached, he was bewildered to see a large yellow and red sign that seemed to shine through the fog.

“Mystery Shack?” Dipper read out-loud to himself. “What the heck is a Mystery Shack?”

The dethroned god opened the door labeled the main entrance and awed at the room filled with statues, but not of gods and goddesses or even humans. Of some of the weirdest monsters and frightening creatures the boy had ever seen. Dipper, oddly enough, was intrigued and excitedly entered.

“Wow, check all of this stuff out!” He gasped. “A six-pack-a-lope, a Gremloblin, and is that an opposite sphinx with a head of a lion but the body of a human?” Dipper paused at the more normal looking statue in the room.

An old man with his long gray hair kept back with a ribbon bore metal plates on his shoulders and a cape with his tall sandals, leather-padded skirt, and puffy shirt. Dipper peered at it closer, wondering why something so normal was among the abnormal, making it the most abnormal thing here. He reached to touch the statue, but he suddenly slapped him and growled, “Hands off the merchandise!”

Dipper screamed like a little girl, cleared his throat, and tried to scream a little more manly, all the while the old man stepped down from his tiny stool and dusted himself off, his tie red and his eyes a warm, sparkling brown, his snooze a strange orange color and his cloak was red, as well.

“Ah, the old mistaken-for-a-grotesque-lifeless-statue gag! Works every time! Welcome to the Mystery Shack, kid! Got any gold? If you throw some into this Sack of Mystery, I’ll give you a tour of the greatest, creepiest, deadliest creatures known to Greece!”

“Uh, no thanks.” Dipper said as he lightly shoved the Sack of Mystery out from under his nose. “Listen, you know where I can find a Trainer of Heroes?”

“Sorry, no one’s on this island but me.” The old man grunted. “So either pay to look at Snake-Haired Lady or beat it.”

“Come on, you sure no one else is here?”

“Listen, knucklehead, I’ve been here longer than you’ve been alive.” The guy growled as he walked towards the Employee Only door. “There ain’t no Trainer of Heroes here. Do yourself a favor and try Sparta, I hear it’s nice this time of year. Now scram before I find a big three-headed dog to chew you up and spit you out.” And the grumpy old man was gone.

Dipper rolled his eyes in annoyance. There were only two possibilities: either Mabel, a muse and probably the sweetest person Dipper had ever met, was lying, or a creepy old conman was lying, so Dipper decided that he wasn’t leaving the island until he found the Trainer of Heroes and he decided to investigate.

This place was filled with things heroes might fight, so maybe there was an exhibit full of heroes, and maybe there would be some information as to who trained them. So Dipper looked around and saw a doorway that had a big messy sign that read “Closed For Remodeling.” But a good inch of dust was on the door. Another lie?

Dipper turned the knob, but it was locked. He turned it again, his super strength coming into play, and he accidentally broke the handle off. Oops, at least the door was unlocked. Dipper let it swing open and he was delighted to find a big room filled to the brim with artifacts and old relics from past heroes. The boy slowly walked in, unaware of the log of wood over his head, and he bumped into it.

“Hey, HEY!” A loud voice rang and the old man was back, this time only in boxers, not even wearing a top to cover his round, hairy chest, and he growled, “Watch it, that was part of the mast of the Argo!”

“No way!” Dipper gasped as the old man shoved him out of the way angrily and moved into the room. “The Argo?”

“HA! Who you think taught Jason how to sail? Noah?!” The old man laughed harshly as he walked past paintings and vases. “I trained all those would-be heroes. Odysseus, Perseus, Theseus, a lot of -euses. And every single one of those knuckleheads managed to screw up! But then, oh boy. There was that Achilles guy. Now there was a guy who had it all! The build, the speed, he could not only throw a punch but take it and keep on coming for more! BUT THAT STUPID HEEL OF HIS! Barely gets nicked there once, and he’s done and out of the count.”

Dipper blinked a few times, letting this story sink in. “Y-You?! You’re the Trainer of Heroes?!”

The old man sighed tiredly and leaned against a wall. “Call me Stan, kid.”

“Listen, I need your help!” The boy said and hurried to him. “I wanna become a hero, a true hero! Please, teach me!”

Stan snorted. “Haven’t you been listening to me, boy? There are no trainers on this island.”

“C’mon, please!” Dipper begged. “I have to do this. Haven’t you ever had a dream? Or just wanted something so badly you’d do anything?”

Stan looked down at the boy kind of weird for a moment or two, but then looked away, his eyes down like his hopes. “Yeah, I had a dream once. That I was gonna train the greatest hero there ever was. So great, the gods would hang a picture of him in the stars.” But Stan shook his head, like a dog clearing water out of its ears. “I ain’t training no more. Guy can only take so much disappointment, you know?”

“Stan, please, I can do it.” Dipper pleaded. “I have to! If I don’t, I’ll never be with my twin sister.”

That made Stan’s eyes flicker to the boy, trying to detect a lie. “You got a sister?”

“Yeah,” Dipper sighed. “Her name’s Mabel. I only talked to her for five minutes my whole life, but she’s amazing. She and my Great-Uncle Stanford, too, I guess, are the only family I’ve ever known, and I’ll never be with them until I can become a true hero and get my godhood back.”

Stan snorted and held his breath. Dipper looked at him and then scowled. Was this jerk trying to not laugh? “H-Hold it, kid. Stanford, Ruler of the Gods and all that and a bucket of grapes, is your uncle, right?”

“That’s what Mabel told me.” Dipper said. “She’s a muse. Well, okay, a muse in training, but…”

Stan was covering his mouth as he tried not to laugh, but he was failing miserably. “St-Stanford? The big guy?! He’s your UNCLE?! Haha!” Stan beat his fist against the wall a few times as he howled with laughter. “Mr. Lightning Bolt! Haha! P-Poindexter and Poindexter Junior! AH, HAHA! ‘Read me a book, would ya, Gwunkle?’ HAHA! Th-Then Sixer goes, ‘Once upon a time…’ AH, HAHAHA!” Stan was wiping tears from his eyes at this point as he laughed and held his ribs, down on his knees.

“It’s true!” Dipper yelled and stomped a foot in anger, his face red.

“Oh, please!” Stan growled and stood up as he cleared his throat. “If that genius really is your family, why hasn’t he sent you here sooner, eh? You think that big jerk cares about family, or that any gods care about family for that matter? Take my word, kid, they don’t.”

Dipper shook his head. “Well, Mabel does. She wants to help me get home, so she sent me here. I’m gonna be a true hero and I’ll work as hard as I can to get there, and I’m gonna see her and be with my family.”

Stan crossed his arms over his chest and glared at him. “You’re really willing to sacrifice everything you got for some dumb sibling?”

Dipper glared back and nodded.

A slow, slightly-creepy grin grew on the wrinkly face until it ranged from ear-to-ear. “That’s what I wanna hear! Okay! I’ll do it!”

“Wait, what?”

“You wanna be a hero that bad? Fine, I’ll train you.” Stan said and led the way out of the door and through the museum for the outdoors. “I’m giving you one shot to prove to me you can take it, so show me whatcha got. Anything.”

Dipper grinned and hurried to a nearby tree that looked like it was dying. “Watch this!” He grabbed it like he was hugging it, pulled, and with very little effort the boy yanked it out of the ground and threw it into the ocean, where it splashed far out of eye-sight.

“HOLY HERA!” Stan yelled with a grin and slapped his forehead. “Alright, pipsqueak, listen up, here’s the deal. You’re a scrawny little twerp who could use a good slap from puberty, but lemme tell you, you got potential. You’re stubborn and crazy strong and that’s good enough for me, so here’s what’s gonna go down. I’ll train you, but fair warning: this’ll be the hardest thing you’ll ever do ever. I ain’t gonna be soft with you. I’m talking waking up before dawn and not falling asleep well past sundown. I’m talking potential broken bones and internal bleeding if you fail courses. You might even wish that blasted Underworld will come and getcha already. But if you can handle my training, you can handle anything. If you’re up to it, your training starts right now. Oh, and you’ll have to work for me in exchange for a bed and some food, got it?”

“Deal!” Dipper said and shook his hand without a second’s hesitation. “I’ll literally do anything you want.”

“You’re gonna regret saying that, kid.” Stan smirked and threw a broom into his hands. “First task, clean the museum. If I see a single speck of dust you’re going without dinner tonight. Now get to work.”

Stan walked back into the Mystery Shack, disappearing behind the Employee Only door again, but the moment he was safe from hiding, he held his face in his hands and swore under his breath. “Damn you, Sixer, you really made me miss the birth of my own niece and nephew? Fuck you.”

Pactborn - Part II

NOTE #1: This is a chapter-long post of a character’s backstory, so hit your Keurig for a warm cuppa and curl up under a blanket, cuz this isn’t a quick scroll sort of post.

NOTE #2: I’m changing this submission up from the second person tense of the previous post (the one I used when talking to my PC during her zero level session) to the first person tense, just to shake things up and try on different styles. Hope you enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed experiencing it!

I wake up to the warmth of the morning sun on my face and the smell of bread baking downstairs: normally, this would feel like any other morning here in Khaadeehava, but this morning feels different. Maybe it’s because today the annual celebration of Al’adwa, the festival of Solune where everyone eats street food, plays games, and watches the solar eclipse; or maybe it’s because of the amazing dream I had again of the nice man with the shield who takes me flying over the city and the ocean (sometimes, I like to pretend that the big ships I see in my dreams are Papa’s); or maybe it was the weird feeling in my stomach when I woke up: I thought – no, felt – like someone was watching me…

Regardless, I throw my legs over the side of the bed, glancing over at my outfit for later, as Mama calls up to me, “Kal’ya, darling, a letter is just in – I think you know who sent it!” With my gangly form, I sprint like a whirlwind down the stairs to see Mama fixing breakfast in the kitchen and a letter waiting for me on the supper table – on it is the seal I’ve come to recognize and love: the insignia of the Felgran Fleet, the royal navy of the next region over from Ghaan. Papa joined the navy when I was five years old, and his work has kept him away at sea for sometimes months at a time for the last three years. It’s so exciting to read his notes when he can write though! He tells me stories of all sorts of different people, different types of weather, and strange sea creatures he’s had to encounter. I carefully tear along the side of the envelope to pull out his message to me – it reads:

I hope this letter finds you well - my journey has taken me around the coast again into the frigid waters of the Gheaţă Ocean to a region known as Chladny (have you read about this place in your studies?). It never ceases to amaze me how we are only a mere 30 days apart and yet, where hot sand lies beneath your feet at home, frozen snow lies beneath mine as I stand here on the Zamuerzat Wharf. How I wish I could bring you with me! Perhaps when you are 10, then we will sail around the entire continent of Baenomir. Until then, I hope you will enjoy this trinket (called a “compass”) I picked up in one of the shops in the port - it is Dwarven made and is said to be able to tell you which direction you travel. May it direct your paths until mine direct me home to you. I know I have been gone longer than usual, but I may be home within the next month.

I miss Papa so much! And I want to go sailing so badly! Sometimes, when Mama sends me on errands, I’ll go to the docks down in the Lahira Marina just to watch the ships go in and out of the port. I’d give anything to sail a great big ship like one of those.

Before my mind can wander far, I remember the part in the letter where Papa mentioned a trinket – my eyes scan the table for a package and quickly find it and unwrap it: it’s a…metal box? I study it more closely. Dad has told me before about dwarves – that they’re a little shorter than most humans but are very, very smart and can make the most incredible things out of metal! As I turn the “compass” over in my hands, I see that the bronze casing holds some notches and a couple dials behind a thick piece of glass. I spin around the room and watch the needles whirl around, and it makes me giggle. Rubbing my thumbs over the front of the compass, I feel the cold, shaped metal shaped into the four points on the device – they are of four faces, and all have tiny little red gems fitted into their eyes, ears, and foreheads. A couple of the faces look a little creepy, but one looks like a tiger and another looks like a grumpy version of Sultan Hunab! The top face, nearest the “N,” has a large hat like the sultan wears, and it’s around this hat that the cord of the compass is wrapped and tied.

Excited to show Mama, I run into the kitchen with my letter and trinket. “Look, Mama! Look what Papa sent!” I slap both down onto the table, eager for her to read the letter and to marvel at my new treasure. “Papa says he got this for me and that it shows me where I’m going! Look!” I shove the compass closer towards her face, obscuring her vision for a moment as her head jerks backwards in surprise.

“Hold on, Ka’lya, hold on, let me read your letter first!” she says as she chuckles warmly with shared enthusiasm. She finishes reading the letter then extends her hand to examine my gift before laying eyes on the grimacing faces, letting out a short gasp, and nearly throwing the compass as she recoils from it. I scramble clumsily to catch it before it hits the ground, barely getting a grip on it before it clambers to the floor. I know the look I give her is one of confusion and frustration, and she quickly tries to regain control of herself. “I’m sorry, I—I don’t know what came over me…” she says as she wipes her hands on her apron and goes back to scrubbing out a bread pan.

Mama is usually a pretty tough lady: she does everything for Jida, Jido, and me. She might not be an adventurer like some of the people in the stories Papa tells me, but she still is kind of like a hero – she cooks and cleans and makes things for Jida and Jido’s stall down in the bazaar sometimes. Mama told me once that she even saw a dragon, but she doesn’t like to talk about it; she said it makes her sad when she thinks about it. Maybe this reminded her of something that made her sad once…

I don’t bring up the compass again as I quickly gulp down the delicious breakfast Mama made and, after putting my plate in the sink, I run upstairs to get ready for the day. Mama saved up some extra silver to buy me a new outfit for the Al’adwa celebration tonight – a new pair of pants with a nice tangerine and turquoise shirt. When Papa comes home, he brings home lots of coin to help support us while he’s gone; but the longer he’s gone, the more we have to do what Mama calls “cut corners.” She says that sometimes you have to do difficult things to get by. But for tonight, she must have put that aside, because as I look in the mirror, holding the sleeveless, silky-soft shirt up to my torso, I feel like it is much too nice for me to ever wear out of the house.

Carefully pulling the shirt over my head as though it could tear at any moment, I smooth it down over my long waist then begin to brush my long, tangled black hair. I look up for a moment to comb out a knot, and I meet my own glance in the reflection – I’m not much for prettying myself up, so looking in the mirror is a rare occurrence and seeing my two different color eyes always catches me off guard. My right eye is a dark brown just like Mama and Papa’s; but my left eye is a pale blue. Jida says that that is where an angel must have kissed me before I was born. Mama tells me that it’s unique and something to be proud of, but the other kids in town usually just make fun of me over it.

I must have been upstairs for a while now, because I’m surprised when Mama yells up to me that it’s time to head into the market district for the festivities. Before leaving my room, I brush a long section of hair down over my left eye. Joining Mama on the veranda, we walk hand in hand to the bazaar. “Your cousins Ravi and Baru will probably be here, you know – you’ll have to try to find them so that you can play together,” Mama encourages me, “just be sure to meet me back and Jida and Jido’s stall before the eclipse makes it get too dark, alright?”

“Don’t worry,” I assure her. Even though the nice man that visits me in my dreams tells me that my blue eye is a gift, I still don’t know if I like it. I wish sometimes that I were just a normal kid, nothing special. Then maybe I would fit in better.

We meander slowly down the dusty downward slopes of the residential district to the Central Bazaar, and Mama coaxes me to run off while she visits with her friends. I wander aimlessly through the sandy streets for a while, picking up a few dropped pieces of copper and finding myself a food vendor where I buy a kabob – I eat it cautiously, almost leaning forward with each bite, careful not to drip any of the spicy sauce on my new outfit.

As I continue my half-hearted search for my cousins, a foot shoots out from behind a street booth, tripping me and causing the rest of my kabob to go rolling down the path, getting coated in dirt and dust. I look up, surprised, to find two other children pointing and laughing at me – Sai and Danikka. Sai, a scarlet-skinned fire genasi, is a notorious bully, and Danikka, a blue dragonborn, simply runs with him because she’s the tallest girl in our small little school and all the other kids are afraid of her.

“Why don’t you watch where you’re going, weird eyes?” Sai goads me.

“AAAAWWWWWW, you gonna cry?” Danikka whines as she chimes in, making me feel that much smaller as she towers over my body, now covered in dirt and kabob sauce. A fire begins to burn deep within me, and my ears and neck start to flush with anger as I pick myself up off the ground. “If you can’t watch your step with those eyes, then maybe you only need one of them!” Danikka threatens, and I barely get my fists up in front of my face in time to deflect her right fist as it comes sailing towards my left eye. Relief floods my system for a moment, and I let my guard down too soon as her opposite hand shoots out with a parry, hitting me square in the eye socket. I stumble backwards in pain, holding my left eye and trying not to cry; disoriented by the thumping of blood as my face begins to swell, I trip again – this time on myself – and fall backwards into a vacant market booth.

I scramble, nearly bear-crawling part of the way until I can properly erect myself, as I watch Sai closing in on me, a cruel grin on his face. He grabs for my ankle as I right myself, only catching the fabric on my loose, baggy new pant leg instead, causing the seam to split as I wriggle out of his grip. I dart off into the streets, my left eye wet with eye-watering pain, and I can hear the two of them giving chase as I dart like a gazelle in and out of alcoves and alleyways, trying to lose them.

After toppling a basket-weaver’s display stand to slow them down, I zigzag my way to a side street and duck beneath another empty booth where I crawl inside the booth’s sliding compartment door beneath the countertop. I wait here for what feels like forever, hearing them find my route, search briefly for me, then move on, still calling my name in unnatural sing-songy voices. I emerge from my hiding place, looking about feverishly for any signs of them, before an altogether different voice takes me by surprise.

“Why do you run, child?” asks a deep, velvety voice from behind me. I jump and turn with my fists raised in reactive terror. Rather than Sai or Danikka though, I see a tall tabaxi man, striped black and orange with a white neck. He stands from his stool behind the merchant booth next to mine, and I can tell there is no way he works at the bazaar: his clothing is much too fancy-looking to be a merchant. He steps forward to share my booth with me, his striped tail flitting back and forth gently from beneath his jade and gold colored brocade robe.

I keep my fists raised, mostly out of mind-numbing fear, as he walks softly on padded feline feet. “Don't allow those hooligans to cause you any despair - I can tell that you are strong and will go on to great things,” he reassures me with a wink, slowly and cautiously bringing one hand up to dust off my shoulders while the other hand lifts a pipe to his mouth. Squinting with my one good eye, I do a double-take before realizing that there is something off about this man’s hands since they look like they are on the wrong wrists. I catch myself staring and quickly – and likely obviously – try to avert my eyes. He doesn’t seem to either notice or care as he continues, “Oh, where are my manners, I suppose I should tell you my name so that I'm not a stranger: you may call me Gilgapaka. And what is yours?"

I swallow a hard, dry lump in my throat before looking up into his large, golden, vertical-slitted eyes – “My name is Ka’l,” is all I can get out. My whole head is now throbbing with pain, and I feel too dizzy to run even though my mind is telling me I should; even so, he seems kind enough to feel bad for me. My eyes, his hands…maybe we’re not all that different after all? Maybe he knows how I feel? Wishing Papa was here, I break down in tears and briefly sob into the tiger-striped man’s side before quickly pulling myself back and rubbing my eyes dry.

“My, what a lovely name that is,” the tabaxi gentleman says as he gently brushes my hair from my face, tucking some of it behind my left ear, “could you write it down for me?" He pulls from his pocket a large piece of parchment covered in lots of beautifully-written words, a lot of them pretty long. I feel bad writing on the paper as it looks important, so when he offers me his piece of charcoal, I try to squeeze my name down in the bottom section that doesn’t have any words on it. He holds it up to the waning sunlit sky as the moons begin their encroachment upon the sun, slowly closing in on both sides of it with each passing moment leading up to the midday eclipse that is to take place in a mere matter of hours. I look up at the parchment, too – I feel a small amount of shame at the sight of my penmanship, shaky with leftover adrenaline coursing through my body like a frightened mouse. He seems pleased with it though since I see him smile at it before saying, “Thank you – I hope we meet again soon, young Ka'l. If I see those nasty children again, I’ll be sure to teach them a lesson for you…and remember: you’re very special. Don’t go forgetting it."

I open my mouth to speak, but no words come out. He takes one more long puff from his pipe before leaving me alone in the abandoned booth and striding off into the street. I rub my eyes again, but when I look back up, he is gone altogether from the path. Suddenly curious, I rush out into the street, looking this way and that way for any sign of him among the other people milling about in the bazaar, but there is no sign of him anywhere. I don’t even hear the voice of Mama calling out to me as I look down at my clothes…there is not a stitch out of place nor stain to be found.

jalright, time for journal post three. That’s right folks, I’m STILL a fucking idiot loser.

So! two days ago. Silly didn’t have work, so we made a plan to meet with her mom for Something (she wouldn’t tell me what it was) at 4. As it turns out, we were actually meeting at 530. Unappreciated, but I guess fair to get us ready on time-ish.

Anyway, we met her mom, and went to this... chinese light show thing at the nearby convention center. It was very nice, I took some pictures of it that probably won’t be put here. Wireframe with cloth (or something) stretched over it, lights on the understructure, rather than anything inflatable like I had expected. but woo!

it was very pretty. And a nice experience! A little chily, but not nearly as bad as I’d been told to prepare for (was fine with a hoodie. “ooo wear an Actual Coat bluh bluhhh” my ass)

Then went to this nearby pizza place. Apparently im the one of us three that liked fried mushrooms (they were gooddddd), I stole a lot of silly’s fries (they were very good in ranch), the pizza itself was good, if expensive. I enjoyd spending time with her mom (something something I HOPE it’s not moving too fast to, like, think about “oh what if she’s my mother in law someday, but hey)

Went to half price books, cuz who DOESNT love half price books (books at half price!), I picked up a gift for socks and oboeist. Not much else caught my interest (except the book I got socks :eyes:). I did follow around this group of nerd fuckers, who were apparently talking about completing their naruto manga collections. It was fun being around people being happy about what they do, but then one of them had my deadname and another said “haha hey I’m gonna buy this transamerica dvd” as a joke (it’s a movie about a trans woman, form 2006. never seen it, looks neat. damn. 2006), so actually fuck them and I hope they burn in hell. Stupid fucking alternate universe me. (I think that was the one with long brown hair so. alternate unverse me?)

Silly wandered around for a while. I don’t remember everything she was looking for or saw, but I remember her interest in the metroid fusion gba cartridge, a copy of house of leaves, and and a book of poetry from a writer I unfortunately don’t remember. Sorry love :C

Skipping to next day.

Wake up, time to begin preparing for meetup with silly’s gf (bein poly is weird and fun). We plan to meet her at an asian place near here.

Silly convinces me to wear the top I don’t like (as it makes clear the fact that I have an undesirable amount of belly fat). I also wore it with the black maxi skirt that was one of the first female clothings I bought, and some like. blue fuckin 3-nch heels that weren’t nearly as bad to walk in as I thought. she says I looked very good, I think I kinda believe her!!!

so. On the way to the asian place, we meet gf there, she says its closed. It’s NOT closed, but the wait is like. an hour. So we decide instead to go to red robin. Also! gf is cute, she’s nice and stuff. we get along downright decentwell!

The drive to red robin sucks, and it wasn’t very good. I didn’t spend it in the (very cluttered) back seat, though, so... I guess I have that.

Red Robin was good. they had fried pickles!! and a very cheesy burger sily and gf made fun of me for putting ketchup on :C I like ketchup : Cand cheesy borger. The steak fries, bottomless, were VERY good dipped in ranch, omg. honk ;)

Uh... skp forward... return form red robin. We started a game of commander I don’t rememberwhat gf and silly were playing, but they were both largely blue decks. I don’t remember the whole game, but I was playing the snake deck, which actually went QUITE well for me. I board-wiped twice, at one point countering silly’s counters TWICE to get that gorgon’s board-wipe-non-gorgons thing going. So like. that was FUN. the game took like 2 or something hours in total, and it was fun! it was nice feeling like something of a contender for once.

but yeah it went so long that we had to pause it to go to silly’s friend’s place for new year’s eve. it was fun! got my ass kicked at trivia, but I did not n bad at the space ships part! I am a big nerd. it is what I do. kissed silly on the midnight!

Came back to silly’s place, finished the game, watched monty python, went to bed. Silly seemed to like cuddling TWO gfs. woo! it was warm. I fell asleep within moments.

Skipping to today! Uh... what DID happen today... oh yeah!@ I woke up, and gf was trying to see if she was gonna be fired for forgetting to lock up the store last night, and then silly called off work So we played another game of magic, then retired downstairs to watch... i don’t remember, I know dragon maid, but I think there was some other stuff too? Probably some other stuff. I ain’t smart lmfao

Got $35 worth of pizza from pizza hut. It was fucking amazing (I feel bad for letting gf pay, but then after I paid for her lyft so? I guess it’s not nothing). We’ve gone through most of it already, but there’s still a little of the two liter and the pineapple and meaty pizzas left. AND I got like.50 pizza hut reward points. SO that’s pretty fuckin hot.

Watched more movies, then gf left. Me and silly continued hanging out, I played ds3 (up to the great swamp by now! woo), called with socks and HER gf for like a couple hours I think? I feel bad for being so. Uncouth and weird while talking to them. Here is hoping forgiveness is given, but understood if it is not.

And now silly is asleep. What a fool what a fool. Very sweet. I love her. At one pint during the call socks did not know what was happening because I was overcome with love for her because she is so beautiful.

Let’s see... anything else? oh! I used a women’s restroom for the first time ,and also the waitress at rede robin called us ladies, so that was fun and nice!

Socks and silly BOTH say that I shold not be using a mace as my main weapon in ds3, meaning I will DEFINITELY be using it as my main weapon through the end of the game. Fuck god, and also both of you (idrythyll straight sword can be a backup, though. Think I finally have enough twinkling titanite to get that funky little fucker up and running. Maybe.)

Would you ever consider selling the captive prince charms and washi tape again? I LOVE THEM and I am no where near where you do cons, I would love to get a few of them for my friends and I <3            

the full bundles will not be restocked! however, a limited amount of leftover washi tape and one re-run of the gold metallic charms will go on sale in november, 1 year after the initial release. the bookmarks and postcard will not be reprinted.

generally speaking, zine bundles are meant to be somewhat exclusive, and i do not keep them in constant stock the way i do the rest of my merch – hence the extended wait as well.

Hi! Wanted to ask your thoughts on ever putting up the artwork of walking all the dog pokemon up on your store as a very wide print? I would certainly buy it!

i removed large prints from my webstore recently as the shipping matrix is difficult to figure out and i was starting to eat the cost of a lot of the postage. i can’t guarantee anything but if i’m able to figure out a more functional shipping system i will be putting the dog pokemon print up! in the meantime, it is on my society6!

do you think you'd ever make phone cases with your art?

unfortunately not: phone cases are pretty cost-prohibitive to produce and ship on my own, as well as difficult to keep in stock because there’s like eight bazillion different phone models. i do have some of my art on print-on-demand websites like society6.

ahh they were a pretty limited run and i’ve got like a scattered handful left, so i don’t think they will ever be sold online, no! for this and that reason, i probably won’t be reprinting them, they were intended to be for friends. the designs are still available in sticker form, though!

Here we have a story that I started recently.

I'm probably not going to finish it. It's called Sonic Boom, and I don't know why I started it, it never really made me happy to write.

(also, since it's unedited, it has "elephants" in it to mark where I wanted to change something/wanted to summarize something and come back to go into detail later)

Elephant: make it so the aliens wanted to kind of keep their visit on the down low, so they could just come, have fun, and not arouse a government after them.

Soleil checked her compass again, making sure she was still headed due east. The valley outside of town was overgrown, filled with tumbled over, half rotted logs from the old building projects long since abandoned. It held a charm in the daylight, but it was just spooky at night, in the mist.

She had been to this place often, but in foggy conditions a compass never hurt anyone. She clambered up onto one of the logs, plotting her path up the steep incline, before beginning. Sometimes she had to jump from log to log, sometimes scramble up wet dirt and leaves, and sometimes edge along creaking branches until the top of the hill came into view.

It could almost be counted as a cliff, but not quite.

Sitting in the pine needles at the edge, she looked into the valley below her, where the usual Saturday crowd gathered around the big tree.

Every kid, 10 through 20 knew about this place. It was miraculous this place was safe for ten year olds, most teen hangouts weren't, but there was something about this place that kept people kind. People looked out for each other in here.

She trotted down the hill towards the huge oak tree with a campfire a few feet from the base, repositioning her backpack. The clearing was fenced with thick blackberry and pieces of discarded wood and plastic from town. A few picnic tables and benches littered the clearing, with two fire pits. The oak tree held half a dozen treehouses, two of which had roofs and could act like houses in a pinch.

She waved to one of the kids at the fire, who saved back.

"Hey, Sully!" The kid said.

"What's up Vinny?"

"Not much is up with me, but Ed needs to see you. He told me to tell you when I saw you."

She frowned. When Ed wanted you, there was normally something wrong.

"Well, I'll see you round, then, Vinny. Take care."

Vinny saluted, grinning.

Into the many tree houses, she climbed towards the one at the top, the most elaborate one, the common haunt of her good friend Edward, the scientist.

He kept track of it all. If there was something you needed to know, from cryptozoology to history to aesthetics to Mario Kart strategies, he knew it. And he had a good bit of it recorded in his diaries. What a weirdo. She loved him.

Inside, she found him staring intently out his telescope.

"What's up, Eddie?"

He looked up, nervous.

"Well, come see for yourself."

She shrugged, stealing around piles of books.

Looking in the telescope, she didn't immediately see something wrong but then it caught her eye. A bright green spot in the center of Orion's belt.

"What does it mean?" She asked?

"Well, it doesn't mean iminent doom, don't worry, but... I can't say I know exactly what it is."

"So like...."

"It's not an asteroid or something that's going to strike the earth. It's getting closer to us, but it's slowing down at a rate that if it hit Earth at all, it wouldn't hurt us."

"Well that's good. Do you have any theories?"

"Well, yeah, but it's kinda dumb."

She crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow.

"No it isn't. You figured this out before any of the nasa people did, your idea about what it is isn't dumb."

Ed rubbed the back of his neck.

"Well, it kinda seems like.. A ship."

"Like, aliens?"

"Yeah. I think that thing is aliens."

"That is so, so cool. You think they're coming here?"

"Well they're on a direct tragectory course for earth. Probably."

(ELEPHANT: this story is gonna be tough cuz it's the 'independant kids doing their own thing but with their parents' support 2000s era w/ whole computer labs and stuff outta bedrooms. Y'know, the stuff you never did cuz you were busy being feral in the woods. It'll take some effort to make this feel natural)

"Alright, so we might meet aliens in a while. How long till they get here?"

"This is the first night I've observed them, so I'll have to take some more calculations. But, given the rate of size increase based on tonight's observations alone, I'd say... Maybe a week."

Soleil smiled, pushing the hair out of her face.

"A week. Gonna maybe meet aliens in a week. That is so cool, Ed. You're so cool."

"Uhh, well, th-thank you! You're cool too!"

Two days later, Soleil got a call from Ed smack dab in the middle of telephone hour. She was on the phone with Darby, who was

discussing the dance from last week, the nerd con coming up, some new kittens, etc. She was expecting a call from Rin in a couple minutes, and was working on a mutual coding project over a chat

room on some server on her computer when the line in the dining room rang. Nobody ever called the dining room phone unless it was important, and nobody ever answered the dining room phone buy

her. Darby was wrapping up anyway, so she said a giggly goodbye and hung up, heading curiously to the dining room.

On the other end, Ed's voice was excited.

"We were right! We were right, it's allens!"

"Yo, that's amazing! How can you tell?"

"W-well, they talked to me."

She stared at the roof, dumbfounded.

"Well," He continued, "not to me specifically, but to the people of earth. And since I'm the only one listening, I heard jt! They said they came in peace."

"Pfft well I should hope so. Do they have a mission or something?"

"That's why I'm calling you. They wanna know stuff about earth.

They're landing to observe earth for a while. We're video calling tonight, and I wanted you to be there. Come to my house at 7:45, there'll be a few other kids there, but not many. Some trusted fellow

scientists. Will you come?"

"Oh yeahl I wouldn't miss it for the world. I'll wear some nice clothes."

"Thanks Sully, I can't wait to see you there."

The call ended, and she did a little happy dance. Aliens. Real aliens.

And a nerd party. She didn't know which one was better.

That evening, she walked through the suburb towards the DeLorean house in a light blue skirt with puffy sleeves and jeans with flowers emproidered on them.

A few of the nerds were standing out in the yard, with capri suns, discussing nerd things.

Ed opened the door when she knocked, ushering her in with a smile.

"Thanks again for coming, Sully, this is going to be great."

"You know it."

They hung out for about half an hour until 7:40 rolled around, when they and the assembly of kid scientists moved to Ed's room.

He turned on the TV, messing with the large computer and keyboard beside it, until the screen buzzed to life.

They waited in an eager silence for the clock to strike 7:45.

Suddenly, the fuzz on the screen cleared, showing the insides of a ship.

The aliens were adorable. They looked mammalian, and their body looked like a cross between a meercat and a swan, with a smart head sitting atop am elegantly curved neck. Their bodies long but compact, with two pairs of both arms and legs, with tufts of dull orange fur over the elbows, knees, knuckle, chest, ears, and a tuft on the tail. They had no nose other than two slits, and their eyes were big, red, trusting and inquisitive. (ELEPHANT: LOOK OVER THE DESCRIPTION OF THE ALIEI wasNS BETTER, MAYBE REWORK IT)

"Greetings, human, we meet face to face at last." The one facing them directly said, his voice like helium. He sounded as though he were very excited, but was trying to hide it to be professional.

"Greetings, my friend. My name is Edward DeLorian, and these are my friends/colleagues."

"I am Hilarion, and these are my classmates. We have been sent from our home planet for our first unchaperoned school trip, and we request permission to visit Earth."

"Are you sure Earth is the safest place to visit?"

"Indeed. Extensive tests on our world's show that there is nothing there capable of harming us."

Soleil muttered, "wow," under her breath, before Edward continued."

"I don't know if I can give you permission, I'm not in charge."

"Well it's your planet, right? According to our laws, any lawful citizen of the planet that has not committed major criminal activity and harbors no ill will against the chancellor may give an alien permission to land. Is that the way it is there?"

The humans muttered to each other, trying to decide how to answer. Finally, Soleil spoke.

"Since it's rare we get alien visitors, we don't have a real rule about how they should land. But the way you have described things leads me to believe it would be perfectly fine for you to land here. Is there an adult that you can contact and vouch for you if something does go wrong?"

"Indeed, we can contact any of our parents at any time."

"Excellent. I'll allow mr. Edward to continue discussing from here."

Ed mouthed "thank you" to Sully before continuing.

"A-ah yes, you'll need a place to land, right?"

"Yes. We'd like to meet you, so we request permission to land near your current location."

"Granted. There is a large abandoned field that should be big enough."

"Hmm, ok, we're locked onto your location now and... Alright, yes, I see the field you mean. That will work splendidly. At our current rate of acceleration, we will arrive in five earth days roughly."

"Ok, that sounds just fine. Is there anything we can assist you with?"

"At this moment, no. I must thank you, Edward and company, for being so helpful with this. We look forward to meeting you soon."

The scientists smiled and nodded, remaining professional until the call ended, when they all screamed in excitement.

A similar thing happened aboard the spaceship. As soon as the call ended, the fluffy creatures lept from their seats, buzzing around the room, making excited, happy chittering noises.

Hilarion and his littermate, Gi, danced around each other.

They were going to meet real live humans in five days.

"How was your day, sweetie?" Soleil's mom asked as she set a plate of mashed potatoes on the table.

Sully scooped up an eye raising amount of mashed potatoes, with a bit of chicken and steamed vegetables to go with it.

"It was good. Like I said yesterday, we talked to Aliens, and they're coming earth to learn stuff. As long as it's ok, the scientists and I are going to camp out behind the baseball park for the next four to five days so we can make sure we welcome them to earth. Is it ok if I do that?"

"Of course, kiddo, you pack a mean punch, I bet you'll be fine."

Her mother whirled, giving her father "the look."

Dad looked up from his book.

"What I mean she does."

" What your father means is yes, you may. As long as you are with other people that we've met and there's a phone somewhere around, you can stay out in the field."

"Aww, thanks mama! Hey, would you two like to come with us?"

Her mother looked at her, considering.

"Out in... The brush. For several days. To see... Aliens."

"Well, maybe you could just tag along with me the night they show up. That way you don't have to spend so much time outdoors."

Her mother nodded, looking at her father, who smiled and nodded as well.

"We'll be there, kiddo." Her dad said.

The next day, Soleil stood, hands in pockets, in front of a brownstone house in the city. She was in need of the services of the occupant's son. This was the Rodger household, where the ever mysterious Rabbit lived. Rabbit, who's read name was probably Chad but never told anyone, was a 17 year old working from home, in the possession of a truck, which Soleil hoped to aquire the services of.

It was always hot in the city, so she took her hands out of her pockets. She wore a neon yellow tank top with an elephant on it, and some cargo shorts, and was still too hot. She put up with a flannel around her waist, since it would be cold that evening. The summer light filtered in from between the buildings and trees, in a beautiful way that only summer could manage.

Inside, she heard someone stomping down the stairs, and the door opened.

And again, there was about no way his real name wasn't Chad. Baggy pants, orange t-shirt over a white long sleeved shirt, perfect, bleached blond hair, and the most amazing sunglasses ever. Something straight out of star trek.

"W'sah little dude?"

"Quite a bit, actually, but it's somewhat confidential. Are you still offering taxi services?"

"'course."

"How much would it be to privately taxi say, a dozen ner- erh, scientists to and from the suburb for four days?"

"'bout a hundred bucks, I guess. Them lil scientists planning a mad scientist con someplace?"

"That'd be fun. We should do that someday, but for now, until you're on board with the project, I can't spill a word."

Rabbit considered.

"Done. For a big project, I take 25% up front."

"Naturally."

She fished the money out of her flannel pocket, handing it over.

"Meet me in an hour at the DeLorean household. That's 1503 Duck Street."

"Sure thing, lil dude. The truck's got seating for 8, if we're trynna keep the law."

"Oh, certainly. "

On schedule, Rabbit turned up on the front steps an hour later, as the gaggle of 10-14 year olds with camping gear prepared to pile into the truck bed, which was converted into a miniature seating area that could hold 6 people with plenty of footspace. They decided to go six at a time, saving cab space for more camping gear.

Two trips, a long winded explanation of the project, and dozens of bad jokes later, Ed and one other scientist, a black haired girl named Daisy, were trying to make a fire at the chosen campground. The mobile lab was set up nicely behind them, and Soleil pulled a cooler out of the back of the truck, putting it beside the fire pit.

They were tucked in between a big oak tree and the tall net that kept stray baseballs in the ballpark next door, with town just barely visible. The grass in most of the field was tall and unkempt, but under the trees it was almost nonexistent.

Soleil watched them struggle with the fire for a couple of minutes, before offering assistance.

Rabbit walked over to the now burning fire, hands in pockets.

"So, dudes, you need any like... Adult supervision up in here? Cuz... I'm not busy, and this sounds super fun, so like. I. Could stay here if you want."

Soleil looked up, sly.

"How much?"

"Well I guess this time it can be free, I mean... Major scientist bivouacs can be exempt."

She glanced at Ed, who was smiling.

"Of course you can stay."

And so the group settled in for the night. Rabbit produced an electric guitar, realizing too late to save face that he couldn't use it without, well... *Electricity*.

(ELEPHANT: they agree on location and time, and then the humans recruit an older kid with a truck to drive them around and get stuff set up. Sully invites her parents, and they agree to come. Edward invites his parents, and they say they wish they could come, but there is s shallow spot in the fabric of reality and they need to be on guard against it. A scene where him and his dad have a small heart to heart about how his parents love him and respect his work, but need to work on other stuff. Good messages, y'know.

The night before the aliens arrive, the scientists, Sully, a few other kids, Sully's parents, and the truck boys, are in the field, and have a sleepover. The aliens *should* appear tomorrow night, but there's no perfect guarantee, so someone is guarding their little camp 24/7 for the next couple days.

But the aliens arrive right on schedule, at night on Saturday.

Something Old and Something New - Chapter 2: California Dreaming

“Letter for you dear – it's from Hawkeye.”

BJ rushes to collect the letter from the kitchen table.

He and Hawkeye have been writing back and forth since they got home – Hawkeye since literally the day after he landed stateside – and they average several letters a month. Simple letters about simple lives. But each letter is a precious connection to the man he'd been best friends with in Korea – and BJ still feels the same fluttering excitement at this letter as he did the first.

He kisses Peg on the cheek, pours himself a drink, and retreats to his office. This is something to be savored.

And of course he'll tell Peg everything in the letter – Hawkeye always includes plenty of amusing gossip – but BJ likes that first read through or five to be his alone. Likes to let the rest of the world fall away, let the sounds of his wife and children and the steady thrum of the washing machine be muffled by the closed door and the haze of memory and pretend it's just him and Hawkeye alone in the Swamp again.

BJ settles back in his chair and lets the sense of anticipation build as he slides the letter opener between the flaps of the envelope. He's taken to keeping all of Hawkeye's letters in a box in his office and he likes to keep everything intact, just the way Hawkeye sent it. Trying to hold as much of Hawkeye here with him as he can.

But it's difficult, what with hundreds of miles between them. With lives and jobs and responsibilities.

With families.

BJ had spent all of his time in Korea hoping and dreaming and aching to be back with his family. Back with Peg, the love of his life. Back with Erin, who he hardly knew – who he'd been torn away from. Kept from watching and helping through all those firsts – first word, first step, first tooth.

They've made up for it since then, BJ being there for a whole new slew of firsts – first day at preschool, first ride on the Ferris wheel, first time going swimming. And with another baby in the house, he'd more than made up for all the diapers he'd missed changing, all the waking in the middle of the night for episodes of colic, all the messy terrible wonder of it all.

He wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

And that's saying nothing of Peg - his wife, his partner, the woman he loves to death. The woman who'd kept him afloat through the worst parts of his life. Been a buoy through the overwhelming deluge of residency. Been a tether to home through the turbulence of the Korean war.

BJ loves her so much it hurts.

But he finds himself missing Hawkeye, too. In the quiet of the evening, when Peg and the kids have gone up to bed and BJ's had a few drinks and he's just the right side of sloppily nostalgic, he lets himself ache for the breathless Korean summer nights when it was so hot you were glued to your cot but too warm to even think about sleeping. Nights when he'd lain awake with Hawkeye awake across the tent from him. Not talking, not even looking at each other. But BJ so, so aware of Hawkeye laying there – shirtless and gleaming in the moonlight that filtered in through the open sides of the tent.

He aches for those nights, and for Hawkeye's uncomplicated presence in his life.

Not much about Hawkeye can be considered uncomplicated. But in those moments, when there were no expectations of each other, nothing voiced aloud – when they could just be with one another. BJ misses that. Misses that sense of peace, of understanding.

So each letter from Hawkeye – each line of connection stretching out between them – is precious. A reminder that their friendship is special. Something to be kept locked in BJ's heart alongside his love for Peg and his kids.

Don't get him wrong, BJ has plenty of other friends – fellow professors at Stanford, old college buddies. His motorcycle club. And there's a few guys in the club who remind him of Hawkeye, actually. But it's not the same. And when BJ gets drunk enough to turn maudlin – the kind of drunk that sees him sleeping in the guest bedroom instead of with Peg – he can admit to himself that he wishes Hawkeye was here with him.

They'd been such a large part of each other's lives – practically joined at the hip twenty-four seven for over a year. And then Hawkeye had just been gone. On the opposite side of the country and living his own life.

His life without BJ. And with Trapper.

So many of Hawkeye's early letters talked incessantly about that smarmy bastard. And, BJ knows logically, it makes sense that Hawkeye would talk about him. After all, they live together.

 Trapper   gets to be in Hawkeye's life everyday.  Trapper   doesn't have to communicate solely through letters for over a year – with only one too short, too confusing visit to tide him over until the next time he can plausibly go see Hawkeye.  Trapper   gets to have some weird domestic little setup with Hawkeye – like they're fucking married or something. Cooking for each other and keeping house together and-.

BJ is jealous as hell.

And it had bled into his letters to Hawkeye. All BJ's jealousy and resentment and longing had been too much to hide. And it had come out in angry, snide little jabs at Trapper - at Trapper's character and opinions and abilities as a surgeon.

 Eventually, Hawkeye must have gotten sick of it because he'd stopped writing about Trapper at all. There's holes now in all his letters where Trapper used to live. It's not exactly better – BJ knows Trapper is still in Hawkeye's life. But the childish, jealous,  mean   part of him is glad he doesn't have it shoved in his face anymore.

Until now, anyway. Because Trapper's all over Hawkeye's latest letter.

Trapper gets all the way through his letters to Max and Radar and Father Mulcahy by the time Hawkeye finishes his letter to BJ.

And part of it is that Hawkeye's just more verbose than Trapper – both out loud and in writing. Trapper's letters during the war were always pretty short and not overly flowery. Whereas Hawkeye can spin a yarn to rival the Homeric epics – and enjoys doing so when he's got an appreciative audience. Trapper's girls, for instance.

But part of it is that writing to BJ takes careful thought. Strategy. An intimate knowledge of all of BJ's sore spots – and how to avoid them.

And BJ's biggest sore spot is Trapper. Which is unfortunate, because Trapper features pretty prominently in Hawkeye's life, for some reason. Like, oh, they're living together.

Sure, Hawkeye has other friends. And Trapper does too. But at the end of the day, they're in each other's lives nearly constantly. Trapper's family is Hawkeye's family and Hawkeye's is Trapper's. They spend an awful lot of time together, even without their relationship coming into things. And it gets pretty difficult writing about his life without mentioning Trapper at all.

But if Hawkeye mentions Trapper, then BJ gets huffy. And it's no fun writing a guy who makes the rude kind of sarcastic comments about your lover best friend partner. So Hawkeye's taken to editing him out. Explicit mentions, anyway – cuz there's no real way to completely remove Trapper from his life, they're just too intertwined for that to be possible.

And it's not like Hawkeye really wants to try that hard, anyway. It's BJ's problem that he can't handle Hawkeye having another “best friend.” But still, tact is required – so he starts the letter kind of easing into things.

 Dear BJ,

 I hope you and Peg and the kids are well.

 From you last letter, it sounds like Peg's keeping you plenty busy getting ready for Christmas – including getting you to buy a flocking gun. BJ, I thought you were a pacifist! All those months in Korea and you never touched a gun. And you get back home and what do you do? Open fire on a bunch of defenseless palm trees. (I'm joking, I know you're too far north for that. You live in the land of towering pines, as you keep reminding me with photos of your new house. It sure looks nice – maybe someday I'll even get to see it in person. It'd be nice to get a look at it without your thumb covering half the view.) At any rate, you made a great Father Christmas for all the orphanage kids, so you shouldn't disappoint at the Church pageant. Even if you are handicapped by your lack of mustache.

There, that ought to put BJ in a good mood. He loves talking about his family.

Unfortunately for BJ's equanimity, most of what Hawkeye's been up to this past week has involved Trapper and the girls. Still, a little careful editing of events (and pronouns) and Trapper's name doesn't need to be mentioned. After all, Hawkeye's trying to butter BJ up here, get him to go along with Trapper's gift idea, not put him in a snit.

Speaking of flocking - get your mind out of the gutter Beej, I know what jokes you're making to yourself - it's strange for this New England lad to imagine having to make fake snow. We've got enough of the real stuff around here to last until July. We were planning to go up to visit Dad around Thanksgiving like we did last year, since the kids enjoyed it so much, but a storm blew in and they closed the Boston to Maine line and we had to stay home. Still, the girls had a good time making snow forts in the back yard. And all of Kathy's experience as a softball champ really helped her whup our butts in a snowball fight – I don't think I've ever faced such a resounding defeat sportswise.

And then we made cookies to send to my dad to make up for not visiting. I've sent along a few for you and the family.  Because a little bribery never hurt anyone. Becky made one special for Peg on account of the new baby – it's the sort of oval one that's meant to be a baby in a manger. I hope you enjoy them. I had absolutely nothing to do with their creation – other than drinking hot chocolate and kibitzing while they were getting made – so they turned out pretty edible. The girls have really improved on their cookies since those first ones they shipped me in Korea. I think most of those ended up in the rock-skipping competition.

BJ must think Hawkeye's awfully full of himself, using the royal we so frequently. That or he realizes that Hawkeye actually means him and Trapper when he uses it but has decided it's not worth getting angry about that as long as Trapper's name goes unmentioned. BJ's drawn stranger lines in the sand.

So has Hawkeye, come to think of it. But it's frustrating to have to edit his life so much. He's already lying by omission to so many people about the truth of his relationship with Trapper. And it's not like Hawkeye doesn't understand the necessity of discretion – he doesn't actually want to get arrested – but to have to hide the truth of himself from his own best friend is hard.

But Hawkeye doesn't know how to broach the subject. Particularly when BJ's so touchy about everything Trapper. Maybe he'll have a chance to talk things through if he sees BJ in person – or at least ask why he's got his shirt in a knot ever since his visit last spring. Because he wasn't nearly so weird about things before then – content to ignore Hawkeye's mentions of Trapper rather than make snide comments about him. But Hawkeye can't interrogate him unless he actually shows up, so he'd better get to that part of the letter.

Speaking of terrible things from Korea, Charles's wedding is coming up in just six short months. Why we need that long of a heads up about it I'm sure I don't know – but then again, I'm not a beacon of class and taste. Or ridiculously loaded – whatever the impetus is there. Regardless, I heard through the grapevine that you've been invited to the wedding. Since I miraculously made the cut - along with several other members of the 4077 – I wanted to see if you'd planned on attending. I think the whole deal will be much more fun with as many of us miscreants as possible in attendance to balance out the stuffed shirts.

Anyway, if you're planning on going, we've got a little scheme you might be interested in. Charles is richer than rich and a snob to boot so we can't all get him something that he'd want individually – not without breaking the bank. But we – all us MASH guys - could all pitch in on something and get him a present he actually likes. And I had the idea of doing something sentimental, to really make sure he appreciates the gift and doesn't just open it right into the garbage can. And the idea of doing a quilt got suggested - and Margaret and Sidney and Steve are all for it - so I'm asking around to see if anyone else wants in. We're petitioning Max to take charge of the project – so expect a letter from Toledo. I don't know if you've already got a gift idea – or if you're planning on attending the wedding at all - but if you want in, the offer's open.

This next part, Hawkeye isn't one-hundred percent sure about. But when he'd asked Trapper what he thought of the idea, he'd just shrugged and said he's fine with whatever. Sometimes Hawkeye gets a little aggravated by how easy-going Trapper can be.

It's not that Hawkeye wants him to be jealous. Or for him to start a fight with BJ – the fight that BJ himself is clearly gunning for. But when he asks for Trapper's opinion, he honestly wants to hear it.

“C'mon, Trapper. I honestly want to hear your opinion.”

Trapper sighs. “Ok, fine. I just – I know BJ's your friend and I don't wanna badmouth him, you know? But I'm getting kinda tired of him getting all up-in-arms every time you so much as mention me. I tried to get along with him when he visited - and I thought I did a pretty good job of it - so I got no idea what I did to make him hate me so much. But I think it's pretty damn petty of him to make you kinda tip toe around him when you write.”

Trapper pauses. He could say more here – more about his impression of BJ's character and his friendship with Hawkeye - but he ain't trying to start a fight. Just avoid one with BJ.

“So anyway. I don't mind if you invite him to stay an extra day – he's your friend and you don't get a lot of chances to see him. But I don't know that I'll want to stick around for it.”

Having said his piece, Trapper heads off to make dinner while Hawkeye mulls all that over. He knows Trapper's right about the way BJ's been acting – it's petty and silly and Hawkeye's been getting kind of tired of it himself, to be honest. But Hawkeye's always been one to try and keep the peace, the one to try to keep everyone together and afloat through tough times.

And it's difficult – painful – the idea of losing BJ's friendship. He means so much to Hawkeye. They'd been through so much together. When he'd told BJ he'd never be able to shake him, Hawkeye had meant it. There's a big old BJ shaped place in Hawkeye's life that he doesn't want to have to try and fill over.

But BJ could be making a little bit more of an effort here, too. Profess an interest in Hawkeye's life – all the parts of Hawkeye's life – the way Hawkeye had listened to BJ's endless chatter about his wife and daughter and all the minutia of their lives. Even though Hawkeye had no frame of reference for raising a kid or having a wife, no real interest in the topic outside of BJ wanting to talk about it.

And Hawkeye's maybe feeling a little petty himself. A little annoyed at BJ's insistence that Hawkeye bend over backwards for him without really reciprocating. So he goes back and rewrites the letter to explicitly mention Trapper where before there had just been euphemism. Even if it means BJ won't go along with the gift idea.

But Hawkeye does value BJ's friendship. Does want to see him. So he adds on the extra part inviting him and Peg to visit.

Speaking of offers, I was wondering if you and Peg wanted to stay over an extra couple of days in Boston after the wedding (assuming you're going.) I've never met Peg, but I'd really like a chance to get to know her. And I don't see you nearly often enough. We have a bunch of time before anything needs to be settled, but I'd love to see you for more than just a wedding reception – particularly one that's being run by Charles Winchester. I hope to hear from you soon (and maybe see you in half a year.) Your friend, Hawkeye

Peg looks up from her book as BJ emerges from his office. His face is a thundercloud and Hawkeye's letter is crumpled in his fist.

Peg sighs.

Letters from Hawkeye usually leave BJ floating on air – his face alight with joy and his gestures expansive as he recounts the latest news from Boston. But when things swing the other way – when the letters contain something that reminds BJ of the bad parts of the war, of all the things he's lost – he gets angry like Peg's never seen.

It's like something came back with him from Korea – something deep and angry and wild riding her husband. Peg doesn't know where it came from, or what causes it to come out, most of the time. She doesn't know how to make it go away.

But when BJ gets the bottle of bottom-shelf gin out of the liquor cabinet – the one he says almost tastes like the homemade hooch that came out of Hawkeye's still in Korea – Peg knows she's in for a long night.

So she calls up her mother-in-law, asks if she can keep the kids overnight. Puts away anything she doesn't want to see broken – all the nick-knacks and souvenirs of her and BJ's life together tucked safely away in the cabinets experience has taught her he won't try to open. Peg battens down the hatches and waits for the storm to blow over.

Eventually, BJ reaches the stage of drunk where he's wrecked his office and yelled himself out and he's just sitting drunkenly at the kitchen table, staring at the bottom of his empty glass. Peg sits down across from him. Watches him pour another measure from a new bottle and drink that too. Waits for him to tell her what's wrong.

“Hawkeye's asking if we're planning to be at Charles's wedding,” BJ starts with a vehemence the statement really doesn't warrant, as far as Peg can tell. “Wants to know if he'll see us there.”

“He's going, then?” Peg asks delicately. Trying to figure out what's bothering her husband without getting him any more upset than he already is.

“Yep.” BJ bits out. “He and Trapper will both be there.”

Ah. There it is. If anything is guaranteed to put BJ in a less than charitable mood, it's mentions of Trapper John McIntyre.

“That doesn't mean you need to interact with Trapper, dear. It's not like you'll be forced to spend time with him.”

BJ snorts derisively. “Trapper hangs off Hawkeye like they're joined together surgically. There's no way I'll get to see one without the other.”

And that's to say nothing of Hawkeye's regard for Trapper. Trapper, Trapper, Trapper. The whole fucking letter was full of Trapper. Trapper did this, Trapper thinks that, Trapper had this idea. Hawkeye couldn't go a sentence without mentioning Trapper. It makes BJ sick to his stomach, so he drinks another glass of gin.

“And apparently, Trapper had some big idea about us MASH docs all making Charles a wedding present together. Like we're all some big, happy family. And Hawkeye wants to do it, so that means I have to too.”

Never mind that Max is the one actually running things. And that BJ probably won't have to have anything to do with Trapper or his dumb stupid self. It's the principle of the matter.

“And if that wasn't enough, we got invited to stay over at Hawkeye's house an extra couple of days.”

“That sounds nice,” Peg says encouragingly. BJ's calmed down enough to have a coherent conversation at this point and she'd like to keep as positive a spin on things as she can. “I'd sure like to spend some time getting to know Hawkeye after hearing so much about him from you.”

“You don't understand,” BJ interrupts sharply. “If we visit for longer, then we'll stay overnight at Hawkeye's house. And that means that Hawkeye will give up his room. And that means he and Trapper will sleep together.”

“I know you think Hawkeye and Trapper are... together,” Peg says gently, placatingly. “But you can't think they'd do anything untoward with us right next door.”

BJ does think that, though. He thinks about it a lot.

About that night he'd stayed over at Hawkeye's house, in Hawkeye's bedroom – leaving Hawkeye to sleep with Trapper. About Hawkeye – beautiful, unreal, gorgeous Hawkeye – and Trapper – with his stupid muscles and his stupid smirk and his stupid everything – laying together in the dark. “I'm not putting up with that shit,” BJ mumbles. “Not again.”

 Because however bad imagining it is,  knowing   would be worse.

 BJ lapses back into silence. And he's clearly still angry, but he seems to have moved past the more explosive sort of anger and into something a little less disruptive. And if he's just going to stare at the bottom of a glass all night, she's going to bed.

“Maybe just sleep on it, dear, before you make any decisions,” Peg says gently. “I'm going to bed now. We can talk about this more in the morning.”

 BJ looks blearily up at her, almost like he'd forgotten she was there. Definitely time for her to go to bed. She pours BJ a glass of water and kisses him gently on the forehead before she heads upstairs - and through it all, he just sits there, staring down at his empty glass.

 Peg vows that she's going to get to the bottom of all of this, even if she has to use a team of wild horses to drag the truth out of BJ.

-right now the pseudo empire is bombing the eastern hemisphere they're bombing it pretty good and they are hitting and hitting and taking you down and yeah your AI boy is influencing it and lots of idiots here are AI people they say and they don't know anything about it they have no beat on it they don't even know where it is. Talk to you about 70% of the military targets have been taken out and they're increasing their assaults and bombings on the populated areas of morlock proper and minority warlock and they have hit about 17% and it's an increase from 10% this morning they are going nuts on them and they're ramping it up now we heard that they are shooting for 100% military targets and the are taking all the equipment too they are also wearing their gear made a big difference and they assaulting them and winning and the others don't have much gear and they're crumbling and when it comes down to it they think they can defeat anyone with it but that's fine there's a lot of fighting going on but in the eastern hemisphere the pseudo empire is going to devastate all of their military targets including the top side USA type military bases and they will have a lot less influence over society and we'll start threading and threatening with devices and they will begin to take over as some have Harley-Davidson and other motorcycle companies and try and take over engine companies and we're going to use it to take over those companies to produce machines for people to commute on there's a lot of talk going on that these people are stupid and people agree

-it's a few things we haven't talked about for a while one of them is the borders they are being stormed practically by the morlock and Mexico is one of them and the pseudo empire had to build fortifications and they patrol for real now and they are eliminating them at the Mexican border a movie develops and they say it's all about monsters and it's not it's to keep them out so they're going up Mexico from the Yucatan peninsula from Brazil and South America and they're flowing up and there won't be anybody left of theirs in South America in the south all the way up to the Amazon in just a few days and there's tons dying at the border they go up there and they don't make it in and they're dead huge numbers out and they found out that these pseudo empire has some really big bunker systems there and they're trying to attack them now and they're calling troops

-there's a number of people here who keep interrupting and we're going to go after them one of them is BG and he mixes it up with Trump today and into the night and tomorrow in several movies and they fight each other all the time and to the death pretty soon they're going to start shooting each other in the head and their forces will diminish one of the movies was on last night where is they're trying to force him to assassinate a presidential candidate and he's not running is not voting for her but he doesn't care to do it and Trump ends up dying and then he gets he is in another movie passenger 57 and Trump gets killed by Garth because he harmed him by proxy and the two gang up on him and she's pleasantly happy because our son got the check and she did help out and she usually does but says all sorts of s*** but he says it can't be helped because you're trying to identify the enemy and it's an effect but it is weak compared to what happens to those who do it and it's true there's also other things happening

Bad Beginnings

It had been a day and a half since the Rogues had lost Reyna to the UPR ship. Her presence had been such a constant that the Favour had become deathly quiet without her around, and although it meant they could all rest a little easier when they weren’t tending to their own personal duties, the ship was absent of the light and warmth she carried with her. No one had ventured over to visit, not wanting to disturb the Valkyrie in her current state, not wanting to see the rabid anger in her eyes as she questioned and tortured Rendain for information. Seeing her with a knife to his throat, hearing her without the hint of teasing, jovial tone in her voice... it was enough to make even the Roa’s blood run cold, but none of them had the audacity to drag her away. She was determined to see this through to the end, not matter what she had to lose in the process. It was on the third day that Foxtrot had had enough without his Commander, his rifle in one hand, and a bag of Tupperware containers in the other, the heat from their contents causing the bag to sweat. If she’d gone this long without food, then she was going to need everything she could get her hands on to restore her energy. And he just enjoyed watching her eat. He ignored the looks of the other UPR staff on the ship - they all knew who he was and knew better than to stop or question his presence on the ship - as he made his way to the holding cells, wondering why they continued to keep Rendain around. A few bullets through his head and tossing his body back into the Void would be more than a mercy killing. Everyone’s interests in discovering how he made it out was the only thing staying their hand, but it was also giving him the one ace up his sleeve to ensure he continued breathing the next day. If he could do it, they could soon figure it out for themselves; treating him as an important source of information was only going to fuel his ego further. There outside the door, he spotted the faded shadow of his Commander, her jacket bunched up and resting on her folded knees as she used it for a pillow. Her hair was greasy and matted to her scalp, and the closer he got, the easier he could smell the stink that wafted off of her. Reyna perked up on hearing the new set of footsteps - it was without the usual rhythm of the stiff UPR gait - and scowled when she found the old clone standing there, the plastic delivery bag in hand. She looked worse for wear, with red eyes, dry, cracked lips, and a skeletal pale look that made the dark circles around her eyes even more pronounced. The empty bottle of beer at her side revealed just how well she’d been “feeding” herself. “How much longer you gonna stay here, boss?” He placed the bag beside her and took up the spot across from her, leaning against the wall. He had to ensure she was going to eat, after all. “Long as it takes until I get my answer,” she croaked, peeking into the bag to sniff out what he’d brought her. Her stomach turned loudly at all the smells that poured out, and she no longer had the pride to maintain her hunger strike. “You know he’s not gonna.” Whiskey rolled his shoulders in slight disappointment. She knew better than this, and yet she was letting this control her life. “Then I guess I’m never leaving,” she spoke around the fork in her mouth, half of one container’s contents already shoved into her mouth. How long could a Jennerit go without eating, she wondered... “... last week was NewShine’s Day...” Another roll of his shoulders, a shifting of his gaze to the window behind him to take in the star. Still burning. They’d done that, and now she was letting herself go over some asshole... Despite his cavalier tone, Reyna froze in mid-shovel, a large clump of sticky rice falling off her fork. Last week... that meant... She dropped the food back into the container and slid the meal away from her. It had been months since they first shoved Rendain into that cell, days since she’d come down here... “This isn’t how I want the year to end.” She dug her knuckles against her eyelids in realization, curling up into herself at just how much time she’d wasted being here, and for what? His laughing in her face. Half-truths or white lies on what he’d seen on the other side, tall stories regarding her parents. All of it meant to twist her apart from the inside out, much better than the twisting of any knife, and Rendain hadn’t had to lift a finger. She’d done it all to herself, buying into the snake oil he had to offer. “Doesn’t have to be. We got a few hours left, got some nice digs set up, waiting for you. Even got the sparkling stuff so the kid doesn’t get drunk. All you gotta do is get off your ass and join us.” “Heh, you make it sound so easy.” She wiped at her mouth with the back of her hand, the memory of the meal’s flavours already gone. She could stay, eat and renew her energy, find a new way to put a chink in Rendain’s armour and work some intel out of him. No lies this time, only the truth- “Cuz it is.” “No, no it’s not!” The spark ignited in her, her emotional outburst brought her to her feet, and she crossed the small space of the hallway to drive a pointed finger against his chest over and over again. “This is everything I’ve been looking for since this stupid war started, and I’m just supposed to give up!? I finally have a chance to work out the truth, and you want me to walk away?! What if you’d given up, huh? Still ass-deep in UPR orders, pretending to be a good little soldier when they didn’t give a s**t about you?” Whiskey growled at her accusation, even more so at the fact that she was grabbing at straws rather than making sense. The two situations were nothing alike: he’d escaped to better himself, to get out from under their heel, while she was willingly throwing herself under Rendain’s to get what she wanted. That wasn’t how the Valkyrie usually operated, and it was starting to piss him off. “I’m not your babysitter. Do whatever you want.” He shouldered her aside and headed back the way he came, no longer interested in trying to convince her otherwise. “I’m not done talking to you!” She wanted to give chase, but the outburst alone had sapped her of the strength she’d gained from her small meal. “Go bitch to Rendain if you’ve still got something to say, but I’m done listening. You come back when you get your senses.” Whiskey hitched his rifle against his shoulder as he finally departed, leaving Reyna to the empty hallway and the packed meals he’d made for her. Most of them were her favourites too, though there was hardly anything he made that she didn’t like. Disappointed in herself, she gathered up the half-eaten meal, sat beside the door once more, and ate in silence. One empty container soon became four, and despite the satisfaction of her stomach’s needs, she still felt completely empty. Through the window she spied the Favour drifting towards Solus, a sea of fireworks sprinkling and scattering from the back of the ship. Greens and blues and red, all ringing in the turning over of a new beginning. She tossed the empty containers back into the bag and pulled on her jacket, readjusted the holster at her hip. “Happy New Year...”

Monster Blake P.1

This outlines one of the first portions of Blake’s story as it lines with everyone else’s. The back story is very brief cuz i still don’t know how to make Adam yet but into all the other good stuff of making team monster!RWBY is starting here with Blake’s story.

Blake is a Harpy who has a fondness for study in arts. She often steals books from human ships. Her relation with Adam is a simpler one where he terrorizes and kills creatures she kidnaps at his request, saying "This person is truly evil their crimes are merely too small to notice". As a Harpy she can sense evil intent or murder and takes crimes very seriously (though she doesn't realize until later that she has been fooled by Adam and has been helping him murder innocent people. His own evil presence always out weighted the kidnapped creature) . Eventually she finds this out and believed she needs to live different for the safety of those she loves (after all other monsters may find out about her actions and hunt her and her family) . She remembers reading of Towns where monsters could buy different potion to give them human appearances or give the humans magic and monsters power. She goes to several towns asking the best place to buy a potion to give her a human appearance and hears of Dust till Dawn, a small family owned potion store that sold decent potions at a low price for monsters and humans alike. This becomes her destination and is where she encounters Ruby Rose first. Upon entering the shop she speaks with Ruby and orders a set of potions, Ruby tells her that the potions will take a few days to be brewed and that she'd need a few feathers from Blake to properly weight the potions attributes. Blake hands over a few (or I guess allows Ruby to pluck a few from her Scruff). Ruby suggests Blake go look around town as it is Monster friendly and to find a good Inn. Blake thanks her, notices some books on her way out and leaves. As she wanders the town a bit she thinks about the books and decides to go back in the morning to see them. She finds a large Inn (at a small price surprisingly) and stays the night. The place is a large open oval room on the roof. A Griffin and Hippogriff are also staying several cutouts down from her and she ,oddly enough, feels at home. The next morning comes and she goes back to Dust till Dawn to find the front door to the shop still says closed but the door slightly ajar and with claw marks all along the door's handles and a key in the lock. Unsure of what to do she slowly pushes the door open and it slowly reveals the shop appearing ransacked. She steps in slowly and notices a red cloth behind the register counter reminding her of the cloak she saw Ruby wearing. She calls out a few times lowly to Ruby and the third time the cloth shifts and a snarl with a grunt emerge from behind the counter. Blake freezes and lowers her body, spreading her wings and getting ready to stride back if needed. She takes a small step back as the snarl and grunt stop, creating a silence. Her foot creates a soft scuff sound and immediately a wolf jumps up over the counter to her, scaring her. She tries to fly up suddenly but slams her head against the ceiling, unintentionally knocking herself out. She then wakes up to someone calling her name in a small voice. When she opens her eyes though the wolf is staring her down, so she frantically beats her wings. As she does she knocks over some things on a small table and the voice that called her awake yells "Ah wait Blake!" She slows and stops as the wolf steps back defensively, also trying to catch the things on the table. Blake pauses staring at the wolf then asking "Ruby?" The Wolf smiles and gives a laugh,"yeah hh sorry, if I scared you!" Blake realizes she was laying on a cotton pad and is in a separate room than before, a door to the shop on the right wall. A voice calls out to Ruby and a Blonde girl, appearing older than Ruby entered. She had a noticeable scarring around her face and she wore fairly plain clothes. Ruby introduces Yang and they reassure Bake that nothing terrible had happened, explaining how Ruby was a Werewolf and had forgotten to take her potion at the right time, causing her to have a violent transformation that morning when she was trying to open the shop. Yang stated that the potions they made worked well for long periods of time but need to be taken in certain amounts consistently otherwise a whole new batch needs to be made. She then gave a small scold to Ruby that they'd need to make her a new batch now. Ruby gave a wolf grin saying that maybe they could wait a few days to start it. Blake too notice to it and asked why she'd want to wait for something so useful. Yang rested back in her seat with grin as well saying it was because Ruby preferred her Wolf form but that she scared others coming into the shop. It surprised Blake that a monster running a shop that sold potions made to change their appearance, would actually prefer to be in their monster form. And yet it was understandable that the reason she'd need them is so she wouldn't scare others. She was at least 1 foot and half, 2 feet, larger than Blake and aside from her voice she seemed very ferocious. Ruby then apologized if she scared Blake saying that she had fallen asleep after transforming and wasn't sure who had came into the shop as their had been several break-ins in town, where humanized potions were being stolen. Yang states that she assumed it was due to the properties used to make them, especially since the main brand being stolen were Schnee's. A potion brand made by a family a high leveled Vampires who use magic and can grow certain rare plants to enhance the potions power. Though it's also the most expensive humanized potion, it's the most potent and can be taken much less often than any other brand's. Just the fact that Vampires had such a notable profile surprised Blake as she'd hardly hear anything about them other than maybe a few specific missing persons that were found to be a Vampire's victim. The idea was interesting to her if surprising. Ruby jumped in saying that the heir to the Schnee's Craven Company often preformed at concertos to promote their brand and show a Vampire's variant powers. She then seemed to remember something and told Yang to mix a something from a couple of drawers. As Yang got up to do so one of her forearms flew loosely and her hand went limp. She gave a quick curse told Ruby she'd fix her arm first and then mix. Ruby gave a knowing and happy nod and Yang proceeded into another room. Ruby leaned over to Blake and explained that Yang was undead and had to constantly resew her limbs on and replace them. It made her fairly upset that it's something she has to consistently take care of. Some time passes with Ruby and Blake talking a lot about the books in the store they sell before Yang returns with a tea set on a tray. Seem of the ingredients includes grassy herbs and Ginger with a few flower petals in a small bowl. Yang sets the tray on the table that Blake had previously knocked over and begins mixing them as Ruby continues their conversation. Blake tells Ruby about the limited but interesting books she had collected over time and about a few of her favorites. One of which Ruby recognizes the title of and jumps up and over to a shelf, pulls off a book, and brings it to Blake. "This is a sequel that the author asked a friend to write for them!" Blake took it slowly examining it closely, running a few feathers across it. Ruby tells her she can have it if she'd like. With that Ruby turned back to Yang asking about the tea and Blake stared at her a bit. She then fluffed her scruff and scooped up the book rubbing it against her scruff. Ruby looked back to her and smiled. Blake froze and blushed. Yang then poured some of the tea for all three of them. Blake thanks them and tells them she'll be back tomorrow. The next day Blake gets her potion and Ruby asks her where she'll be headed next. Blake thinks for a bit before stating she'd go to the one of the largest city that had monsters and humans, as she never really encountered many humans who were comfortable with monsters. Ruby suggests Vale, a large popular town a few days away, mentioning that she and Yang would be headed out there soon themselves and they could meet again. Also that the heir for Schnees would be there for a free concerto around that time. She strongly agreed and said goodbye for now. On her way out of town she stopped at the Inn to check out and drank one of the potions, carefully reading the instructions with it. She's surprised by her human appearance and adjusts her outfit the best she can and most noticeably she felt colder. She stops at a clothing store on her way out of town purchasing a coat as well. It took her a few days but she arrived at Vale. She immediately noticed posters all around town promoting the Schnee's Craven Company and the concerto they were to hold. Also noticeable there was a larger range of monsters from large ones she didn't recognize to squirrely ones that dipped past others. Then humans. They were noticeable because they didn't seem any different than she was at that moment. Though she also knew that didn't really mean they were human. She several blocks into town and was passing a restraunt when she felt a bit unusually hot. She then remembered it was about time for her next potion a and as she pulled them out (they were in a small pouch each in a vile) someone ran past her knocking them out of her grasp. They all cracked against the ground. She felt immediate hurt. In a small daze she cleaned it up the best she could and went to an open air cafe near by. After sitting for a while staring at the cracked viles and pouch blankly, she noticed her hair feathering a bit. At that time she was approached, by a boy. She felt a twinge of something as he said hi but she mostly found him to just have awkwardly said hi and nothing else. After he continued to sit there a bit awkwardly he just as awkwardly stood up and walked away. She tried to put it out her head as he approached a group of guys at a table across the way that seemed to laugh at him. As she went back to checking her appearance she found her hair was attaching more to her neck, making her scruff again. The same boy approached her again but she didn't feel the same twinge again, and this time he actually introduced himself. Sun asked her how she was doing, that she seemed kind of alone and upset. Blake finally started to feel the rest of her feathers coming back. She quickly got up excusing herself, but forgetting to grab the viles. Sun looked back at the others who started laughing harder, one of which was a reptilian boy who waved for Sun to follow her. Sun grabs the pouch, cutting his hand a bit, slowly grabs it again, and runs after Blake. Blake turns off behind some buildings, ruffled her coat off stretching out. Sun turned the corner and stopped as a few crack sounds came and Blake was suddenly surrounded by feathers, hunched over. Her breathing got heavy very quickly before she stretches out and takes a deep breath. She hears Sun go "whoa" before turning back to him. They stare at each other for a bit before Blake notices the pouch and Sun talks to her. They talk a bit and she explains the potions situation and he explains he just wanted to talk to someone, his friends pressuring him to talk to a girl. Blake feels concern that he just choose to talk to her on a whim, but he reassures her that he genuinely took an interest in her. At that he kind of blushes and she turns away. He invites her to come back to the cafe, she accepts and when they get back he introduces to Neptune, Sage, and Scarlet. After hanging out with  them for a bit she decides she need to find somewhere to stay for the night and says goodbye to them, but asks about the concerto before going.
