and we were speaking from experience. non binary is something that some people might take a while to realize, if they are indeed non binary. or genderfluid. and because of our own gender identity, anon and i were speculating, i don't think there's anything wrong with that.

also also, talking about bisexuality, LOTS of characters are confirmed bisexuals, pan, fluid, gay at some point. season 2 alone has its majority canonically bi.

elijah - bi, either mc or arjun;

hannah - bi, towards the end of the season, and you can run from the wedding with her. she can also be an li during cmm;

henrik. he confirms he's looking for connections and not girls specifically. that can be a bunch of things, including pan or demi. either way, under the bisexual umbrella;

lottie - bi, just like hannah;

marisol - bi or pan, depending on what mc says she likes, whether 'girls' or 'connections';

priya - bi, she comes out during cmm;

rocco, he says he would try with guys, on the first challenge, as he winks at them, so... fluid;

some people just love ignoring open flirting between boys and call it "friendship" or "jokes". when i look at two dudes openly flirting and exchanging a kiss, i'm not laughing, i'm happy for the representation. y'all are historians!

bobby - melts every time he hears noah's voice and gets all jumpy and nervous, besides complimenting it openly. exchanges a kiss on the lips with noah during the season. openly flirts with noah during cmm;

gary - he can also exchange a kiss on the lips with noah and compliments it, feeling flushed right after. he shouldn't be off the list. granted there's nothing else but i guess you're worried about canon, so i'm giving you canon;

lucas - he gets attached to henrik very early on but no other bombshells behave like that, nor girls or boys. they call each other cute names and can SNIFF THE PILLOW OF THE GUY THAT LEAVES (that goes for both);

noah - he can kiss gary or bobby during the season, compliments the kiss, and flirts with bobby during cmm;

straight, no same-sex romantic, flirty or sexual interaction whatsoever, or are canonically straight:

warning: this is stupidly long

Luisa and Camilo are literally besties. It was mostly because they bonded over being the middle children on their sides of the familia, but also they have many shared interests, such as being theatre kids (Camilo made everyone a theatre kid somewhat but completely transformed Luisa into one) and working very well with children.

(An addition to the headcanon above this) The first person Camilo came out to as genderfluid and gay was Luisa, and when Camilo told her, she came out to them as a pansexual 💪😻

Dolores hates when anything touches her face and especially her ears. One time a tia on Félix’s side of the family took her to a fair that came to town and Dolores cried when she had to go get face paint. Luckily Félix was there to save her. (i’m not projecting myself onto characters i like /s)

Dolores and Pepa have habits that kind of mimic each other. Like, when they’re really tired they chew/suck on their thumbs, or when they’re really happy they flap their hands around (cough cough autism headcanon cough cough)

Isa is a sucker for grape agate. She loves that damn crystal.

Luisa likes to pluralize words that don’t necessarily need to be pluralized. (this is ACTUALLY projecting myself onto kins)

Luisa loves to play piano. She takes this trait after her father and they could play piano together for hours. She also enjoys playing piano for Camilo’s performances.

Félix, Agustín, and Bruno have always been somewhat friends since childhood.

Mirabel is absolutely terrible with punctuation in her writing. She always forgets commas and everyone gets scared by what she wrote. (me too miraboo, i just use autocorrect online 😔✋)

Isa and Mariano are very good friends. They talk about girl troubles (AKA Mariano being worried about Dolores and Isa crying about how in love she is with a painter's daughter)

Bruno is absolutely terrified of swimming. Some bullies left him in a river once and he never went near one since. He got over his fear when he had to cross a river to save Antonio from some concerningly sharp rocks.

Pepa will always go to her family’s performances, whether it be a band show or just a small play. Pepa will always be there for you. (aww <3)

Luisa can’t skip rocks for the life of her. She’s tried and tried again but she can never do it. Once Camilo shifted into her and skipped rocks as a joke but Luisa cried instead of laughed.

Dolores is really flexible for some reason. Neither her mama or papa are as flexible as she is, so they don’t know where she got it.

All the cousins have an afternoon out where they just have fun every couple weeks. It always goes wrong, but hey at least they’re spending time together!

Luisa has a special life hack to make people laugh a little. She goes to their level, no matter how tall or small, and boops them on the nose.

When she gets sick, Pepa makes it snow. She made it snow in the middle of July and no one in the town could do anything except be pissed at poor Pepa </3 (this headcanon does not cross over into my fanfics tho)

Agustín won a medal for tap dancing once. It was cool but once he won he fell off stage and broke his leg.

Antonio loves orchestra music for some reason, like whenever he’s stressed he’ll put on some orchestra and just cry or something.

Pepa is terrible at cooking meals. Once, Julietta went out of town for like 2 days and the only thing keeping the familia alive was Agustín and what he learned from his wife. (before the whole casita collapse and Bruno reveal because Bruno is probably a really good cook)

Julietta always makes a special vegetarian meal for Antonio when it’s time to eat. He really appreciates it and always hugs her a bunch and thanks her. Same goes for Agustín so he can follow the Kosher diet because he’s jewish 💪 (the second part does not play into fanfics as well)

If Encanto was in modern times, Camilo would be an absolute sucker for Tyler, The Creator.

Adding onto the previous one, Luisa would be either a gleek, belieber, or directioner. Mira would also love the MCU.

MY THOUGHTS ON THE ENCANTO LGBTQ+ CONVERSATION:

hello :)) guess who is supposed to be asleep so they can be well rested for their spanish exam tomorrow but decided a fictional movie controvery was more important :)))

to preface this:

-i'm an LGBTQ+ asian immigrant. and although i don't share the same ethnicity as those of encanto, i'd like to think we have some similarities

-do NOT argue or put each other down over this. the reason why we have these conversations is that so we can understand each other, not to be right.

-if i say something offensive or that you disagree with, lmk and we can talk abt it! maybe we'll come to realizing more than before! just be respectful please

alright, that's it!

1. `white people/whiteness`

as i read a lot about people's arguments i tend to see a lot of it put on white people. while i agree that they typically experience things differently than us, i think it's also important to understand that it can come from poc, too. i am in no way shape or form trying to shift the blame, but leaving others out of the bubble makes it seem like we're untouchable when it comes to biases.

the truth is, though, we're susceptible to it, too. depending on your culture, you've probably got a little bit of internalized discrimination in you. i'll be honest, i thought the trans!luisa idea was okay until people pointed out how it's problematic. maybe it's surprising because i'm a part of the LGBTQ+ and an avid supporter of it, but there's still things we need to unlearn even after joining the community.

2. `why people are placing these hcs on encanto`

i think the reason why people enjoy this movie so much is because it is incredibly different from other big disney movies. it de-villainized green, has musical-like choreography, lacks the typical disney princess voice in the lead role, and has much smaller stakes. what it also has, though, are characters represented in a modern way who people relate to.

i think on one hand people hc isa as a lesbian because she didn't like mariano, and on the other people hc her as a lesbian because they see themselves in her.

i think people did this to almost all the characters; mirabel, camilo, etc.

and there's nothing wrong with lgbtq+ hcs! but the intent behind it can matter a lot. if it comes out of seeing yourself in the character and basing it off of you, then i think that's understandable unless it's somehow inappropriate. but when you're placing hcs on characters based off of stereotypes and stereotypes alone, it'll get problematic.

so, if camilo is genderfluid to you because you are as well and would like to be him, then okay. if mirabel resonates with you so much that you see yourself in her and also happen to be enby, then alright.

3. `putting down lgbtq+ hcs in general`

this obviously does not apply to everyone critiquing hcs, but i think there are things worth saying here.

telling people "not everything has to be gay" or saying lgbtq+ hc-ers are just shoving gay wherever they can sometimes feels a little insensitive. people (who are within the community) usually use these hcs because there isn't much big stuff out there that specifically labels and actively represents them as such. if you get incredibly bothered by even one lgbtq+ hc, then kindly check yourself.

Short answer? Yes.

Long answer? YEEEEESSSSS-

-He is a drama KING. If something goes wrong he’ll feux faint dramatically on the wall and if something goes right he’ll do some fanfare for himself and throw some confetti up in the air

-In addition to being a drama King, he’s also just very theatrical and would often pretend to be others for fun, which is why he got gifted shapeshifting

-Protective as hell. Would absolutely murder anyone if they hurt Dolores and/or Antonio. He might’ve been all “ISABELA YOUR BOYFRIEND IS HERE-“ with Mariano being engaged to Isabela, but now that him and Dolores are dating? If he does one wrong move, Camilo will throw hands.

-After the events of the movie him, Bruno, and Mirabel hang out a LOT. They are a trio of mischief and it’s AMAZING

-Surprisingly sweet guy! It may come off as disingenuine sometimes, but our little chameleon child is a sweetheart

-Speaking of, he’s a TOTAL mama’s boy. Will act like a prankster around everyone but Pepa. Is basically that one video where it goes ”Yeah I’m gonna beat your ass” and then “Sorry Mom. Can you still make me mac and cheese?”

-Genderfluid. This might as well be canon

-He probably isn’t interested in romance and fits into the trope of “I couldn’t care less about romance but then I see the person™️ and now fuck I have feelings”

-An amazing dancer. Well, all of the Madrigals are, but Camilo just seems like he’s got the best hang of it, yannow?

Amazing in my opinion!

Spoiler warning under cut

I feel like they did great with representing autism throughout the moving with a lot of the characters, plus many are queer coded.

Mirabell, while I wouldn't say shes my favorite character, I can definitely kin her. The struggle of wanting to prove herself to her family while they keep saying she doesn't need to hits me right in the feelings. Plus with her not having a gift, shes that much more realistic. Gives me Bisexual/Biromantic vibes.

Isabela's story was well written and she easily became one of my favorite characters. The struggle to stay perfect to satisfy others is shown well through her character and I love how her dress changes. Closeted lesbian.

Luisa. Queen. She deserves all the vacations. She faces self doubt and the fear that her worth is linked to her gift, so she struggles with emotions and showing them to others. Hardcore lesbian.

Aunt Pepa seems like a simple character but she actually is given a lot of personality. Her apperance makes her seem crazy and a little freaky, mostly thanks to her smoky eye, but in reality she's most likely just autistic and doesn't know how to process her feelings well, which is why her clouds upset her so much. Straight Ally vibes, but definitely is on the autism spectrum.

Uncle Félix is amazing, I don't think he was given enough screentime, pansexual vibes.

Dolores is a sweetheart. While her character isn't really focused on much, she's well written. I love how she covers her ears during the fireworks scene and her little noise she makes; she makes little flute noises occasionally. Possible ADHD, maybe autistic, light pansexual vibes.

Camilo. Theatre kid energy. Love this dude. Once again, not much progression into his character, but well written. Genderfluid pansexual.

Antonio. Baby. Love him, he's so sweet. Too young for me to comfortably give too many headcanons on, but possible nonbinary when he gets older.

Bruno. We don't talk about Bruno.

Just kidding, yes we do- UGH HE HAS NO RIGHT BEING THIS GOOD-

He fears his own gift and is given a bad rap throughout the movie. His gift is being able to see the future, and he often seeing relatively negative things/ people only talk about his negative visions. Not gonna lie, he looks a little like Hector from Tangled the series. Possible PTSD, likely to have depression and anxiety, may have DID, definitely autistic. Queer/questioning/gay, nonbinary.

Not gonna lie, hated the grandma most of the film. She sucked just overall, needing everything to be perfect and shit. Her attitude was just... ugh. Mirabel

I think hers came out really cute (and if you look close she has a bi pin)

Isabela

Isa isn't even one of my favorite characters but I was surprised, I really like how this came out. I think it's really cute, especially with the flowers in her hair

Luisa

This one was more difficult, the picrew only had a skinny body type so it just felt off when Luisa wasnt buff. Also I couldn't quite figure out how to do her clothes correctly.

Dolores

I'm kinda disappointed cause they didnt have a red bow or a red choker, like Dolores has in the movie. But it came out pretty good anyway.

Camilo

I made him first before deciding to do all of them, I think I could've done the hair better, both in color and the style, but overall its ok. I like how the clothes came out and there was a genderfluid pin but it got covered up by his hands (I thought the hands were necessary after his part in We Dont Talk About Bruno)

Antonio

I dont like how his clothes turned out honesty. I think this picrew did Antonio and Félix's hair dirty, but it turned out decently except for the clothes.

I honestly really like this one, but maybe I just like the design. I couldn't pass up doing her when I saw the stormcloud as an option. She looks a lot younger, but that's just the picrew. (Also mushroom earrings :) I just felt like they fit her)

Félix

I'm not a fan. They didnt have a yellow shirt that looked like that so it's like a reddish brown. They did the hair dirty and he looks too young and skinny.

I couldn't find the right colors for the clothes, but I think this one came out really cute.

Agustín

I, uh, wasnt sure how to do the clothes. The hair looks ok but now that I look at it it probably should've been darker.

Hey. Let me clarify. THE ISSUE IS THE WAY THE QUEERNESS WAS BEING REPRESENTED, and the fact that the only takeaway lots of white people had was to put their version of queerness over poc, and that they were majority of the fans. Its different now because poc creators have curated the space well. As i stated, luisas transness isnt the issue! It was the stereotypes that went into the portrayal of it which is why people were mad. Obvi trans ppl that look like luisa exist, but the people perpetrating the headcanon were random white teenagers who just saw a muscular woc and associated it with their stereotype of what trans women look like. I can elaborate if you want. I didn't say anything on neurodivergence, and my point about Isabela, while I didn't elaborate, was not about her being a lesbian. She can obviously still be a lesbian, but the way the fans portray it just ignores the reason she didn't want to marry Mariano. Let me rephrase: the discourse wasn't about THE QUEERNESS, IT WAS ABOUT HOW IT WAS BEING PORTRAYED! It got twisted and misconstrued. You don't have to engage with this ask if you don't want to, but I don't like having my words twisted around and misread. And it also hurts my mental health as a panromantic genderfluid teenager to have people misunderstand my points and call me transphobic, despite the fact that transphobia directly affects.

Tl;dr: i have NO PROBLEM with the queer headcanons. People can make whatever headcanons they want. I just wanted to talk about the way majority of the fans ignore the cultural context behind these characters. These cultural contexts and the headcanons should coexist, but the problem is that majority of the fanbase only accepts the headcanons and ignores the cultural context. You don't have to reply, but I'm glad to elaborate on my points if you want because I can understand how you could easily misunderstand them. Please just don't assume I am transphobic or homophobic or ableist, because queerphobia is something I face in my everyday life and people calling me things that directly hurt me causes me more pain.

Cool. Telling me that if I, a genderfluid person of colour from a culture which doesn't have a concept of genderfluidity, relate to Camilo, that makes me racist causes me direct pain based on something I experience in ever day life too.

So maybe you shouldn't have fucking led with that.

Maybe, just maybe, you shouldn't have implied that if you relate to a character along a queer lens, it makes you fucking white, as if my own fucking family don't go out of their way to say that only white people are trans, that being nonbinary is a "white girl thing." As if the huge chunks of the globe don't treat queerness as an invasive, colonial aspect of whiteness, rather than a fundamental expression of our humanity as people of colour.

You can claim all you want that you ~don't mind queer headcanons~ but you took the time out of your day to dig up a weeks old post from a trans person of colour about how insulting it is to frame our lives as an expression of white supremacy and then centered white people over us any goddamn way.

If you cannot parse the fundamentally racist and queerphobic nature of saying that queerness is a White People Problem, then I don't actually care.

You didn't need to come to my inbox with this shit. You could have gone right on playing the "oh I'm a good queer, I know it's something white supremacy imposed on me/I'm a good POC I know queerness isn't as important as my race" game without me ever fucking seeing it.

fun facts:

- i have a spa day once a week to try and keep my skin smooth and just treat myself(don't tell my friends, i'd never hear the end of it. im normally the teasing friend, so they'd have a field day)
