this is the only way this character could have phrased this, her belief that her previously-occupied planet should join the federation of planets, and of course it's playing on the fact that sisko is a religious figure to her and to all of her people, so the faith being expressed can't be understood to be anything but sincere--like, it's not an irony at all (which it normally is when you call yourself a believer of something that you normally wouldn't associate with religiosity or spirituality).

the most interesting part though is that this episode isn't about how kira has changed. she behaves exactly how we expect her character to behave. but both kai winn and sisko express and act in ways that are departures for their characters. in an almost mirror of kira, sisko also becomes a believer and kai winn is right along with him, only about sisko himself. they both come to the understanding that they can't question the messages coming from the prophets---all because sisko was lead to discover an ancient sacred city, long hidden and lost. as if they both needed solid proof.

all while kira is going around talking about sisko and the federation in the same language she uses for her gods. regardless of how this story plays out with the overarching story, it seems like this is the way ds9 argues for that core star trek conceit, about diversity and discovery and new civilizations and so on. by just slowly removing the cynicism of its characters until they've smudged the lines between faithful and rational enough to always be each.

Louka immediately begins to scream in pain. Coals weren't the worst of the punishments he'd been through. If he dared to remember that time in the past, he might've remembered being burnt before. However, this pain was different because the coals were trapped and hot and he couldn't escape.

Fear lit in his eyes as the coals began to light his clothes ablaze. No. No. No. No. Master won't forgive me. I can't let this happen.

It was a lesson Louka remembered well - he was worth less than the polenta that the prisoners ate, back when the was his world. Surely the expensive, rich blue fabrics were worth more than him.

Louka rushed to get the tattered, burning clothes off his body, tossing the coals to the side. The clothes were still burning, this time on the rug. Louka thought of nothing better to do than to roll on the clothes with his back. It hurt so badly, but his body was worthless. Master would understand that Louka was doing his duty as a slave, right?

Once the clothes had stopped burning, Louka looks back to the coals that were safely secured on the stone. He breathes a sigh of relief at not having to put out another fire, before another thought enters his mind.

Maybe, Master wanted me to burn.

Somehow, Louka found comfort in that kind of lie he often told himself. When the memories, like those of the night when he slipped Master's food, flooded his mind, the yellow-orange of the live coals looked more like gold than fire.

Slowly, fighting the urge to pull back, Louka cupped his hand around the live coal and allowed it to ground him, even if he knew that the mark would be there to stay.

I can’t do that; which is why I’m asking you to. #also: a bunch of tags are surprised this isn’t ‘shopped #it’s the lighting. backlit by the sun (which is diffused through the water) but also forelit artificially #the artificial light - a flash pack or something - casts a hard shadow under the creatures arm #which normally wouldn’t be possible if backlit by the SUN; you’d see a less-hard/more-fragmented shadow above water #as light sources ‘compete’ in a sense - and since there aren’t any light sources which can outshine the literal sun #it looks a bit weird when the darkest shadow is being cast from any other origin point - which is what’s essentially happening here #I don’t know the mechanics of how light travels through water; but I know the effect is substantial even with relatively short distances #also: it’s been balanced and color corrected by the author of the photo - who made deliberate choices to bring out the full potential #so it’s not like it’s a fresh and untouched export #but the kind of ‘tacked on’ appearance of the creature is a result of the lighting conditions within the image
