I have a few questions that have been on my mind

Does mikey still have adhd?

Did he meet leatherhead? And if he did how does he feel about him?

How does he feel about karai? Or shredder or even the kraang?

And does mikey fold a like a wet cat when Casey shows romantic interest for him?

Okay all good questions!

Everything that happens in the show, still happens, just with added context of Mikey not being who he says he is and essentially forcing Casey to start hiding too.

I don't want to explicitly say he has adhd as when I write him, I don't have that in mind, but if you would like to interpret that then I'm all for it!

The Leatherhead situation did have a lot more layers to it.

"Interesting... wouldn't hurt to add a powerful beast like that onto my strings..."

Essentially like most things, even befriending Leatherhead is all part of Mikey's manipulation game. He saw someone as traumatized and wounded as Leatherhead and thought he would be easy pickings, someone to pull in any direction he wanted.

In that same vein, Mikey's opinions on the Mighty Mutanimals:

Mondo Gecko: "Everything my mask is and then some, easy plaything. I wouldn't even have to try."

Dr.Rockwell: "He reminds me of Donnie, but a fool all the same as the rest of that little group. Too busy scrutinizing over every tiny detail on the dirt to see what's lurking above him with strings at his throat. I'd consider him more of a threat if he paid any attention to me."

Pigeon Pete: "....... No"

Slash: "I don't like him."

Jack Kurtzman: "Same as Rockwell, he'd be a threat if he even glanced my way, especially with those investigative skills. I'm almost surprised he hasn't seen what else lies just under New York's nose... Almost, they hide too well and have been for years."

As for the rest:

Shredder: "In my way. Annoying pest. And a complete and utter fool."

The Kraang: "Another pest, but more concerning. After all, if they have their way, I wouldn't be able to have my fun. However, I am grateful, I am aware they're responsible for my existence, the only non-foolish thing they've ever done."

Karai: "She's not as bad as April. I must admit, she impresses me at times, If I had no mask, perhaps we'd even be friends. But as it stands, she's another annoyance."

And for the last part of your question! Kinda? It's more the equivalent of a cat owner (Mikey) feeling joy at their pet (Casey) snuggling up to them. Casey has more pull over Mikey than others, but never forget who wields the strings.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog (2023) review

When I cranked out my 4000 word review of Sonic Frontiers, I thought that would be the last I talked about a Sonic game for awhile. After all, there were no more games planned to be released any time soon and I didn't figure I'd have much to say about the Frontiers DLC for example. So until I worked on some retro reviews for the series, I figured it'd be on the backburner for a few weeks.

Imagine my surprise when the Sonic social media team released their own game for April Fool's Day: The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog.

And the best part is it's great!

I've never really been one for visual novels, though I am aware of them. I think the only VN in my Steam library is Long Live the Queen (and I wouldn't expect a review of that any time soon, by the way), but I've seen others including some dating simulators on YouTube so I'm familiar with the genre to an extent.

Story

It's Amy's birthday and she's arranged for everyone to join her for a murder mystery dinner party on a luxury train, the Mirage Express.

Sonic, Knuckles, Shadow, Vector, Espio, Rouge and Blaze are all given roles and costumes to match and are asked to put on a mystery for Amy, playing the role of a journalist, and Tails, a detective, to solve.

You play as a poor anthropomorphic animal on their first day working for the Mirage Express. You help Tails sort through the clues and keep the party going.

Gameplay

It's a visual novel, so the gameplay is very simple. Most of the time, you're just going to be reading dialogue and choosing between two dialogue options to advance the story.

During investigation segments, you'll be given a widescreen view of the room and use your mouse pointer to search for clues. Some things are of no consequence, but you never know what you might find.

Then, once you've found enough clues, it's time to confront and interrogate your suspect. The game starts you off easy with a mystery about Amy hiding something from you and Tails before you move on to solving the murder of Sonic.

At key points in the interrogation, you'll have to pick a piece of evidence to support your accusation and then play a mini-game on the "DreamGear" to think through your argument.

The DreamGear mini-game is an isometric style platforming challenge. It's actually interesting to see Sonic at this angle because it hasn't really been done before.

You simply have to jump over hazards like spikes and explosives and collect enough rings to clear the challenge. The first mini-game only requires 10 rings to clear, but by the end of the game you'll need to collect 100 rings to beat the game.

On the bright side, if you just can't get the hang of moving left to right at this awkward angle, you can actually decrease the game's speed and the ring requirements by percentages in the options menu. Perfect for people who are more used to visual novels and not platforming games, not that I know why anyone who doesn't like platforming would be interested in a Sonic game.

Presentation

I. Love. This. Art.

The art director, Min Ho Kim, perfectly renders these characters in a clean and expressive art style.

Each character is dressed up in a costume for Amy's party and yet each one fits their real personalities in a fun way. Tails in a Sherlock Holmes costume just looks right, and Blaze being a tycoon of industry is just fancy enough to suit the inter-dimensional princess. Sonic dressed up as a ship captain weirdly suits him but I half-expected him to start calling us "Old Sport."

The environments are all colorfully and creatively done. Some of the background details are such cute and random references to the wider franchise that the whole game becomes a treat for longtime fans.

The dialogue has plenty of nods to past games, as well, including Sonic Forces and Sonic Frontiers, adding to the streak of recent content forming a consistent continuity. Is this game canon? Probably not, but it's still positioned itself in the IDW/post-Forces continuity, which I'm loving so far.

The Verdict

Is this a bit over-kill for a review of a free Steam game that was literally an April Fool's joke? Yes.

Does it deserve this much attention? Yes.

The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog is a love letter to the entire fandom and it's an easy recommendation from me. Download it now on Steam (while you can, I'm guessing) for Windows and macOS.

I'm glad Adult Swim is more or less the last channel on television that tries to revel in the fact that it is in fact, television meaning it's audience has to choose to engage with them on their own time and terms and do things like special events. But man, archiving their April Fools pranks are next to impossible, especially the ones that affect an entire episode, like when they added sitcom sounds and vocoding to all their shows 3 years ago

Especially cause no one can legally upload all this shit to youtube

Adult Swim really feels like one of the last networks that give a shit and hasn't completely given up to just leave everything to streaming. Speaking of the pranks, I still think about the night they went out of their way to draw scribbles on characters faces and add fake mustaches in all the anime shows. And then they really sat there and added in a whole fart machine into them that one year too. Thankfully some of it has been archived to prove it actually happened.

I can't wait to see what Toonami gets to do again in 2024.

April Fool's Day, like Halloween, is a long-standing pseudo-holiday for the Institute, with London turning out to provide joke statements. Some of the research staff also get in on the spirit of it. To varying degrees of success.

Someone better at this than me has to have already said it but honestly the fight with Martin and the argument with Melani are absolutely the same problem in two viewpoints.

Like, yes, absolutely, Jon is a fucking idiot for thinking he could change something or make it fairer but I absolutely Do Not think its because he thinks he's Special or has the right.

I think its because he's lost all sense of what his own critical thinking is (and yeah, that hasn't always been the highest anyway whilst being strung along by the manifestation of paranoia)

But my POINT is that Jon has spent so long relying on knowledge from the eye: to keep them safe, to lead them, to not die of starvation, for pretty much every piece of information he's had since the eyepocalypse started. And now he's trying to come up with a solution with ONLY the information the eye wants to give him. Unsurprisingly, what he comes back with is less than balanced because he's not using information he's gathered, he's using what the eye put in there knowing that he'd come to this point eventually.

And Ms Annabelle Cane goes "The inside of my skull has been replaced with the Eldritch equivalent of marshmallow fluff and you're still doing worse at this" so she whisks Martin off into the nono box so the watcher's Special Little Boy has to take 2 minutes out of his day to use the brain cell rather than horror google and that man still requires a stick to the shin to get him there.

I love and fear this in equal measure.

Martin dropped back, feeling as though he'd been struck. “That's not fair.”

“Is it truly not?” Master Sims’ eyes narrowed, looking at him once again with that feeling of being stripped bare and judged with uncaring intensity. “The only reason I can conceive of that you would expect me to treat my own husband that way is due to the way she treats you.”

Husband it echoed in his head. He could never have imagined a man using that word for him in a way that caused such a heavy weight of sickness in his stomach. “I expect that sort of treatment from a man who would propose to me by calling his feelings abhorrent and myself beneath him. You may rest reassured, Master Sims, that you have discharged your duty in putting your unwilling feelings into such a theatrical declaration and that you may take with you my sincerest apologies that I gave you any indication that I would be at all happy for the affections of a man whose feelings for me were such a singularly unpleasant sensation for him.”

So, we’re all just piling on the pain first before we leap into Jon’s coffee shop AU fantasies with abandon, right?

The world is static and pain and terror and Jon cannot lose control, will not lose control because he has lost so much to take his place here. Will lose so much more in mere minutes when the others discover what he has done. But Jon is determined to be the line in the sand. This far you have come, and no further. No more passing the suffering on. No more onlookers caught up in terrors they do not understand. No more childish bullies ripped into darkened doors to save someone who should have disappeared long ago.

No more strangers’ stories burning at his throat and in his conscience to maintain his life and the eye.

He has just enough control and maintains it with a trembling in his entire being because he knows what he must do. So used to the feeling of Knowing he pushes it to the side even as he passively drinks in the whole of the broken world; twisted up by it but not consumed. Not yet.

Martin’s rage, when he arrives, is pure and incandescent. It burns with a familiar shame, and every accusation he levels at Jon tear open exactly the wounds they need to. It is not nearly enough to blind Jon to the Sight of the terror that lies beneath it. Martin is so very scared. For him. Of him. Of what this means.

Jon is a monster, is the eye of the pupil, and yet all of the unspeakable horror in the world beyond filters into the back of his mind to leave room for the creeping, dawning terror that grips Martin the moment that he sees Elias and realises all that has happened. His small control of what he Sees grants him only enough freedom to be all but consumed by the terror-grief that he has caused to one of the only good things in his life.

The feedback static of his own fear as he realises what Martin has also already done gluts the eye to a near euphoria; its own pupil locked up with momentary terror.

Jon could not bear to be the one who passed his monstrous position onto even one more person. Could not bear to doom worlds purely because they weren’t his. In the end he doesn’t have to. He just has to have enough love to stay still as the static claws desperately at his brain to try and claim him.

In the end Martin’s kiss and the kiss of the blade do not feel so very different. Each is a promise and a goodbye. Each is laced with more grief than either of them should have had to bear.

And in the end there is a moment, a single one, in which the static and the pinprics of fear have finally, painfully disconnected from him. It is the first time he sees a Martin he truly loves without the terrible lense of an eldritch fear god. It is more beautiful than all the horror combined could be grotesque. He does not know, when the tower beneath them begins to crumble and the edges of his sight go dark, if Martin will survive this or follow him. But in the end the world is all that it should have been for the briefest of seconds and Jon wishes that the price could have been worth it.

I just had a dream that the Enterprise was under some sort of mutiny or I think an invasion, and there was a "survivor team" set up in the cargo deck lead by the main TNG group. Data was put in charge, and I think we were trying to escape to a nearest planet in a shuttle, and when they were going through titles like First Officer and Security and everything, Data picked me as his unofficial right hand person.

But also we had sponsors for some reason? Data had this purple uniform on and it had a McDonalds logo, and we were in a corprorate sponsored Hunger Games type thing.

Also because I'm still thinking about the Voyager Record, it's amazing that they had 55 different languanges saying greetings, including 5 dead languages (6? Do people speak Aramaic still? I actually don't know).

Some of them are really cute, like "hello from Earth! How are you? Have you eaten yet? Please visit us if you have the time!"

And they even include Esperanto (a conlang), Quechua (a native language from South America), and !Kung (one of the African clicking languages). But I'm surprised they didn't include any other Native American languages?

Where's Navajo? Nahuatl? Any of the Inuit languages?

I mean, they did include a lot of Southeast Asian languages and Chinese dialects, and I can't be mad at these scientists trying to send out a friendly time capsule to aliens.

They did include Navajo music, too.
