So, I'm Watching Dollar Tree The Gilded Age: The Buccaneers (I apologize that this is a long one folks because of ADHD Romantic Period Drama w/ ~Color~ tangents)...

Okay... So, I have to preface this by admitting that Bridgerton never has been my great big thing. It's a cake sculpted from cotton candy.

Pretty and sweet, but not much substance. And very much leaning on the "fantasy" so everyone can enjoy the costume romance fun (but it does please me to see my marginalized players, playing well...). -Using an author's works as a base, who not only started with an all-white palette but was flippant and insulting in response to the idea of inclusion... And yet...

I'm just saying, it is something that the woman who walked away from ABC because an exec didn't respect her enough to get a Disney pass for her family, went on to make that lucrative author's uplift deal with, instead of say, Beverly Jenkins. I love underdog romances that aren't the typical het white bread. Give me the canon gays (I never got slash...but I love when it's canon, especially with color), the big girls, the dark brown skin girls, the Black couples, and the interracials, especially when both are BIPOC and there's no lag in charm/looks in the lighter half in some expertly lit, dressed, confection that makes everyone look as gorgeous as they actually are and there's all kinds of soft plotting and chemistry. Bridgerton for all its lazy ways of handling color, gave that. Everybody is hot. And the people that studios have typically just pretended either weren't "invented" yet or were all living horrible tortured lives of enslavement got to get the sweet costumed wooing, will-they-won't-they, ~romance~ treatment. But... being an obscure Black history nerd... I'm neurodivergent, so I have some deep-dive GEMS that I'll mention here that I NEED TO SEE DONE WELL, before I die. FYI I called Dido Elizabeth Belle a good 8 years before that was actually made. It is frustrating to see some of the ACTUAL interesting capacities in which some actual existing Black folks in history who did live interesting, not tragic lives, not given the big glossy budget, well-written renderings they deserve... In lieu of what has now, firmly taken hold as a trend, colorblind casting in known white works. See recent adaptations of David Copperfield, Persuasion, Tom Jones, & Great Expectations,

and now, this The Buccaneers (which like I said, is Dollar Tree, and *worse* the colorblind cast sister Conchita is using her regular-eggular Cali accent and...is not a compelling actress & her man is a jar of mayo) and baby...them costumes are Reign-levels of anachronistic/bad. It's the lazy jump onto the trend Shonda exploded, and Mr. Malcolm's List started (yeah, that short film was put on YouTube a full year before Bridgerton debuted). So, my point... Instead of *just* doing colorblind casting in old classic white period works... I need to see these ACTUAL GREAT stories of and/or written by or about the colorful people who lived in those societies. And this is where it could get long... but I'll do my best to keep it short... EXAMPLES that were gotten right and those *I need to see adapted*: ____

Interview With The Vampire is inclusive color-AWARE casting... The showrunner went beyond and actually rewrote the narrative to make sure the inclusion wasn't lazily done, but actually improved the depth of the source IMO. And I believe the showrunner is a queer white man. It just takes empathy and effort.

Passing... is a moody slow-burn horror based upon an actual work written by a Black woman in that period, and adapted by a white-passing WOC who not only lived the theme, but rendered it expertly.

Belle is often pointed to as a good example, but my nerd-ass knows Gugu's beyond AMAZING handling of the material elevated it.

Too much was changed from the reality of her life (IMO), still...Most period dramas are about as "true" and yall know I was not a fan of Sam Reid's over-dramatic ass in this... (yelling in that damn carriage for what?!) but he is PERFECT in IWTV. Sanditon being made, despite the typical side-character Black character issues...really was a reset because Miss Austen had already envisioned, in her day and above her class(!) a Black heiress as a character getting the Austen treatment, w/o any modifications the salty and ignorant would prefer to think is beyond "true history". ----- I have a little hopeful part in my brain that wishes it had the power to will capable adaptions of the lives of Carlotta Stewart Lai - middle-class educated Black woman who became a teacher & lived an "Anne of Green Gables" type of Edwardian life (more interesting really) surfing, having "bathing parties," and teaching Hawaiians with her Black family, Portuguese, Hawaiian and Chinese friends on the big island... Her life was w/o the stereotypes people assume all Black Americans lived in Victorian/Edwardian "America".

Gustav Badin, a Black man who was "Chessmaster" of the Swedish Royal Court in the 1700's...was in charge of the Royal family's secrets after the Queen's passing, really gives me intelligent queer Black man energy in his portrait and lived out a non-tragic life in a VERY white space many don't know we occupied.

And The Hunters... Who already have a short film and I've posted about it here... but I would LOVE to see an actual rendering of their lives in the Klondike, with their gold and silver prospects and son grandson Buster and daughter Teslin in Edwardian Canada.

(that is Teslin at the highest point in the photo, named after the lake she was born at)

All this to say... Now, that I've thoroughly veered away from my review of a middling show... I WISH THESE DAMN SHOWRUNNERS used a little effort in research and imagination and gave us more "true to life" renderings of Black life (and life of color, in these romanticized spaces) that isn't tragic nor the patronizin inclusive "fantasy"... That feels like it's smirking at me while saying "we know you weren't ~really~ here, but here! have a cookie!!" These people existed.

You don't have to *just* make inclusive versions of white works with the lie that you have to do that because thee above people ~didn't exist~. Nor do you have to be lazy when you do!! (see: IWTV) Right now, for me... It feels like for the most part we're in a period of very shallow "advancement" in period rep. And I'm saying if little old me can find the actual stories that could make AMAZING true history-based media. Why can't the more powerful people do the same?? P.S.

You already know I'm fresh off being mad about that shitty Bass Reeves show...but I'm even madder because I can't even say, "just make sure its made by Black people," because Jeymes Samuel (AKA Bullitts) gave us skinny biracial StageCoach Mary!!!

---NO!! I will never stop being mad about it!!

DO BETTER!! Have the empathy and care for the material, regardless, and don't rest on "I know what I'm doing because I'm Black" That male gaze won out over truth in The Harder They Fall *smh*

P.P.S I get the feeling the lazy adaptions are about cash-grabbing, what they see as a trend, and being all the ready to jump back into the whitewashed business as usual, that ain't true to *all* actual histories nor (as Austen proved) fictions of those eras or spaces.

P.P.P.S. On The Glided Age!! I do love that the Fellowes drama has Erica Armstrong Dunbar (known for her book and research on Ona Judge -another figure whose story needs to be adapted!!!- the Black woman who successfully escaped enslavement from George Washington's household and was doggedly pursued by him throughout her life) and Salli Richardson-Whitfield as producers... so, Denee Benton's Peggy is authentic... but as much as I like The Gilded Age, I want to combine Fellowes comfort drama... with a CENTRALIZED Black character... Why can't someone do all of it correctly?? WHY??!!!

My Movie Review: "Dune: Part 2"

**Caution...May Contain Some Spoilers**

Alright alright alright y'all.....

Whew! Dune Part 2.... Where do I even begin??

Okay, FIRST of all.... FIRST OF ALL.... This movie was EPIC. Like, GRAND epic-ness. I haven't seen a movie this epic in a good while. The sound, the musical score, the acting, the cinematography, the costumes, etc... EVERYTHING was so on point! 🤯

When the end credits started rolling, I was sitting there liiiiike....

I couldn't believe what I had just seen lol... 😅 I think I was a little bit in shock and just needed to sit there and contemplate/process all that took place in this movie lol.

Let me tell you all... Love the Dune movies or hate them.... These movies are SO well-done! Idk about other Anons/fans who saw this film, but I just felt transported to a totally different world while watching it. Seeing this film in all of its IMAX glory was amaaazing! 👏🏾 I highly recommend seeing this movie in IMAX if you have the ability to.

Okay, let me get down to the nitty gritty of everybody in the film.....

The Cast First of all... Can I just say? This cast did an AMAZING job in this film as a whole. Like, EVERYONE was awesome in this. Everyone was pulling their weight, and was hitting their marks...even the background actors.... I was like, "damn!" There weren't any weak links in this film (imo).

Timothee Timothee BABAAAY....Timothee suprised me! I'll be honest, I've seen a few of Timmy's films before, but none of his roles (that I had seen) had really wowed me, you know? But Dune Part 2?? Oh...he definitely served. 👏🏾 He started off in the beginning of the movie being the same ol' Timmy I know lol....But by towards the END of the movie?? Hunny chiiiiile.... He had me believing his character was feeling his own hype lol. 😅🤣 Timothee really outdid himself with this movie. His voice didn't even sound the same towards the end of the movie. And the foreign made up language that he (and the rest of the cast) had to speak? Superb! Paul's duel at the end with Feyd was awesome (more on Feyd later). It really looked like they were fighting to the death. I'm glad the scene didn't last too long though, because it was pretty intimate and intense. Overall, awesome acting by Timothee. Loved his transformation towards the end of the movie.

Zendaya Ahhh Zendaya! 😃 Zendaya's Chani was definitely the heart of this film as most reviews say. Her character was somewhat of a cynic, but only because she wasn't a "believer". I know Z's acting has been criticized in this film online, but I actually think she did a fine job? I was impressed by her action sequences and her portrayal of Chani's anger and frustration with Paul and those blindly believing in the Maud'Dib. I was SO happy that Z had way more screen time in this movie than in the first one. I also loved how she was given some action scenes/sequences!! I think this is her first action film on the big screen? She was shooting guns, fighting, etc. I was like, "Go girl!!" 👏🏾😃 Denis seemed to have a love affair with Zendaya's face lol, because I think she got most of the close-ups in this movie lol.😅 I actually thought that she and Timmy had pretty good chemistry in the film. It wasn't "passionate" or "sexy" chemistry, but they had good chemistry nonetheless. For those wondering.....YES, there is a love scene lol.... 👀 But it was tastefully done imo.

Rebecca Whew chiiiile, let me tell you... Rebecca scared me in this movie lol. 😅 I was liiiike....

She put the "Mother" in Mother okay? LOL 😅 I always love Rebecca, she's a superb actress and infinitely amazing in EVERYTHING she's in. She had me believing she was the Reverend Mother okay? After she drank that holy life water or whatever it was, she totally changed into someone else lol. 🤣

Austin Lawwwd....this man... I didn't even recognize him onscreen okay? 😩 Austin did not come here to play, and he played Feyd Rautha beautifully. He was ruthless, cunning, yet charming, sexy, and actually had an honor code. During most of the movie, every time he came on screen, I didn't know whether to be scared or turned on... 👀🙈 The Gladiator Scene was like wow.... I always thought Austin was a good actor since "Elvis", but that Gladiator arena scene had me like: "Whoa...he's a good actor!" His acting with his eyes was amazing... Excellent job. 👏🏾 My only gripe was that he was in the movie for far too short of time! Believe it or not, I wanted more Feyd.... 😩 I'm so excited to see what's next in his career, because so far, based on what I've seen, Austin can really disappear in roles. Like chiiiile...this man.....I swear, I wouldn't have even realized it was him had it not been for his eyes and lips lol. 🤭

Florence Florence did an amazing job in the limited role that she was given. Although her role was small, her acting was on point. 🥰 Even Christopher Walken (who's the least Christopher Walken-like I've ever seen him in a role lol) was so subdued, but did a great job as well. I wish we were able to see more of Princess Irulan in scenes (I loved her costumes!), but I know she will have a much larger part in Part 3/Dune Messiah.

Javier LOL I loved Javier in this. He's always good in everything he's in. He had a much smaller role in Dune Part 1, so it was nice seeing him have a larger role in Dune Part 2. His character of Stilgar gave the film much-needed light-heartedness and some funny parts to chuckle at.

PROS

Everyone's acting was on point!!!

The movie had an EPIC vibe and really transports you to a totally different world

The music was haunting and amazing.... I LOVED "Chani's Theme"... Hanz Zimmer really created a beautiful score for this Dune World...I loved it 😊

The movie was 3 hours long, but it never felt boring to me. It was very interesting to me, and when the film credits roll, you're left thinking: "They're really gonna leave things like this???" I wanted MORE!! 😩

The film felt believable. I know it's sci-fi, but the way the film touches upon normal societal issues, it almost makes you feel that this type of world actually exists.

I loved that Zendaya had more screen time in this movie 🥰

CONS

There were just a few too many sand scenes lol... I kind of feel like Denis could have mixed up some of the scenes on different planets with the dusty sandy scenes on Arrakis. During most of the first hour of the film, I was looking at desert sand scenes like this:

ROTFL!! 🤣 Don't get me wrong, it wasn't a bad thing per se, and it didn't detract from the film's greatness, but if I were Denis, I would have given the audience a bit of a break from the desert scenes a little sooner in. I would have given longer breaks in btwn the desert scenes at least 30 mins in lol.

I felt like Lea Sedoux's scenes were way too SHORT! She was like the Zendaya of Part 2 lol. I don't even think she had as much screen time as Zendaya had in Part 1 lol. And Chiiiiile...I wanted to see more of her interactions with Feyd. 👀 Their chemistry was hawwwwt.... 🥵 Austin and Lea had more sexual chemistry in their 2-minute scene together than Timmy and Zendaya had in the entire movie imo ROTFL 🤣 (SORRY Timdaya fans! 😅)

Speaking of Feyd.... Denis didn't give us enough of him! I liked that he was somewhat of a complex villain. But I kind of feel like it would have been nice to have seen a bit more about his background (like, why did he kill his mother??🥴), or know what makes him tick. 🤔

I think it would have been nice to have seen longer scenes with Timmy and Austin together, but I haven't read the books, so maybe they only meet once and that's for the knife fight lol. 😅

It would have been nice to have seen more of Anya in this film, but she will more than likely have more of a role in Dune Messiah.

Overall.... Amazing film. 😊 I know I'm going to have to watch this movie at least a second time to really process everything.

OVERALL SCORE: 8/10

Okay just finished the rwrb movie spoilers below cut

This movie was fine? I guess? I think it cut a lot of parts that helped me connect to the novel, so while I think it was true to the story I don't think it was adapted in a way that was appealing to me. Mostly for three reasons

Tone: the more serious tone left out a lot of jokes and left aside Henry's theater-kid-like melodrama which I felt like made him way more endearing in the novel. I think of the novel as a funny romance with lots of angst, not a romance with angst and some jokes for flavor. Also it made Alex's character feel like he was moving slower, rather than the mile-a-minute way I feel like Alex was in the novel thanks to the comedic elements and also my second bullet:

Removing angst: the claremont-diaz divorce was so insanely relatable for me so cutting it and removing that hurt from Alex made him less appealing to me as a character, not to mention I feel like it caused him to lose a lot of his drive. This Alex was a character that wanted to be a politician, not an Alex that was floundering for the best way to use his talents, letting it change as he figured out where he could help the most but working hard no matter what. Not to mention I don't feel like Henry (and his family's) grief was explored enough. And also Bea. They made her a prep to cut her powder princess story. wtf. I totally wanted to see punk bea for my lesbian heart to pine over okay

June: She was so important in the novel and the merger of her and Nora's characters for simplicity's sake made movie Nora worse. I like that June gave Alex someone to play off of in both deep and comedic ways. Nora just didn't serve that purpose in the novel, she was a quirky brainy queer character that helped move the plot along (also they cut Nora's agency by making Alex and Henry be outed by Alex's jealous ex instead of political scandal for her to unwravel).

Also they removed Herny's interesting charity work stuff and his whole not touching monarchy money which helped him have more depth. (IDK what that fell under I just had to say that too, though that was sort of minor)

Anyways now what I liked:

Casting, I think it was impeccable, and I really liked who they casted for Phillip (cant be assed to google his name rn but he did great at his role of being resident homophobic asshole). And I did like Uma Thurman as this version of President Claremont. Also the actress for Zahra did amazing at adapting her character.

I liked the way they found times to cut down on plot events (cutting wimbledon and splitting up the big moments from the LA adventure into two other events that they kept, cutting Ellen's "so youre bi and dating a prince" power point but still doing a nod to it in a line)

The choice to lean into spanish language music was great. Literarally just my latino input, not much else to say here

I really liked how they dealt with space and the reading aloud of text conversations in the beginning, I had kinda been hoping it had carried over into the emails, which imo have many more iconic parts to them.

So yeah, good movie I guess, it just isn't as compelling to me as the book because they cut a lot of the stuff that helped me personally connect with characters, especially Alex, but it wasn't an awful adaptation of the story.

Do you have a fave My Little Pony song? I’ve never watched it and don’t plan to but I’ve seen clips of it on YouTube, scored through its TV tropes page (pretty much what I do with everything I don’t end up watching/reading), and I even once read a little bit of Fluttercord fic lmao

But I can’t deny that the show has absolute bops. I have a few of them on my musical theater playlist. I don’t really have a fav song but I like any that has Rarity because her singing actress sounds so good

That fucking song, good grief. I could listen to Emily Blunt call me 'little one' in a song all day. It's BY FAR my favorite one. Second place goes to the über classic This Day Aria! Other than that, I adore the various pony mixes - from Sim Gretina to JTH to loophoof to µThunder... My favorites in that genre are Our Town, I'll Fly, Your Heart Is In Two Places (which was my lyric blog theme until a week or so ago haha), You'll Play Your Part... I have a giant pony music playlist I listen to almost daily - the fan music is usually so light and airy and just makes me happy. One of the best parts to come out of that show, imo. A few of my fics have titles inspired by MLP music as well hdsuhsfdjk, I just love to listen to that while writing my silly little noncon fics What are your faves? I really want to know what struck you!!!

HELL YEAH IVE BEEN WAITING 4 THIS QUESTION--

long story short, yes, it was incredible and if ur able to see it I would HIGHLY recommend getting tickets

Going into detail tho...

Let's start off w/ Jordan Fisher since he was (imo) the weakest link of the main cast. The end of Joannah was kinda anticlimactic and his vocal range wasn't the best. You could tell he didn't have opera lessons or smthn whilst the whole cast was very classical sounding, but I'm going to take a guess he just didn't have enough breath support since he sounded a bit shakey towards the end. He was stronger in the second act tho he wasnt rlly belting then. Jordan Fisher has never rlly surprised me vocally, but that's not rlly a bad thing, I just kinda wish they casted someone a bit more fit for the role.. but if that was the "worst" thing abt the show, I think it's going to be just fine.

The ensembles dancing was either hit or miss, some of it was very awkward whilst other numbers was incredible and clever. For "there was a barber and his wife" They had two dancers on a platform where they danced in the dark and it made them seem like silhouettes in the moonlight. Seeing as the show is still in previews, tho, they still have time to patch it up :).

Gaten Matarazzo was great as Toby and had nice vocals. I was also able to see him in deh and although he was more a talking role I think he is a great singer and actor. He definitely pulled off the ending as well and didn't worry about looking attractive or something while conveying to the audience that he had succumbed to the stress of his situation. Believe it or not I've seen a few shows where an actor would try to make themself look hot but also insane and its just kinda annoying tbh-- like they always sacrifice being believable over being handsome/pretty. All in all, he is a great performer and had wonderful stage presence.

Johanna was incredible. Like actually incredible. Green finch and linnet bird is one of my favorite numbers and she did it justice. I forget her actresses name unfortunately, but she was truly Johanna when she was onstage, and embodied the character beautifully.

Beedle was hateable as was the judge, but that's good because it means that they did their job well. Funny thing is that when he said his line "Deceiving slut!" A person behind me just went "oh-- 😨" and it was clear everyone was surprised.

The beggar woman was so good omg-- like she was great at switching between personalities when begging and it was so funny at times but other times it had the audience sobbing or thinking.

Mrs. Lovett was so incredibly funny it was unexpected. She's no Angela Lansbury but I think it's unfair to compare them to each other since no one is going to be as great as her. She was very lively and I never felt bored when she was onstage! Well-- I was never bored during the show but you know what I mean! Her songs were great and she has her own little twist on things. I don't know if they changed the key for "worst pies in london" bc I haven't listened to the og recording a lot but I wouldn't be surprised since every Mrs. Lovett has had a different key it seems. I really hope I get to see her in something else because she was just so fun to watch and I just loved her so much!

And finally...

JOSH FUCKING GROBAN LEZZ FUCKING GOOOO--

I love that man! I fucking love that man so much 😭!

He was absolutely incredible. My mother said she doubted he would be able to pull off an insane middle aged man but my god, he did it. It was strange to see him being so mean and malicious considering he seems so nice irl, but he was so great and I'm so glad he got to play Sweeney. And I'm even more thrilled that I got to SEE him play Sweeney. His vocals were stunning and he was incredible at acting (even if Todd himself is a rather silent and monotonous man).

So yes, all in all, it was amazing and I rlly hope I'll see it again! Here are some pictures of the stage and playbill :)

Last night I saw a local production of Newsies

here are my notes!! (1000000/10, this was AMAZING)

the opening was so funny because they read the theatre rules like headlines (turn off your phone, etc) but the best one was about using the emergency exits and not rushing the stage, because of the fire curtain, it would be "great for readership, bad for you" 💀

important things to note: jack, davey, katherine, and race are played by college students. crutchie and buttons are played by 8th graders. the rest of the newsies, the delanceys, spot, bill, and darcy are all played by high school students. les is played by a 5th grader. the adults are played by adults.

(i didn't know any of this until minutes before the show, but they were on par with a full cast of adults imo)

tommy boy, henry, splasher, mush, ike, jo jo, and finch are all played by girls!! they did amazing

Pulitzer's cabinet is also all women!!!

When Jack is running from the Delanceys in the beginning, he did this cute little jump and wink at the audience, ran off, and when he came back he shushed the audience like we were gonna tell the Delanceys where he went

Race forgot his line ("don't worry kid it rubs right off") so Jack jumped in and said it for him

Buttons had little buttons sewn all over his suspenders and it was adorable

Medda was AMAZING oh my god I loved her so much

the bowrey beauties costumes matched hers, it was gorgeous

Watch What Happens was AMAZING. Katherine's actress sounded just like Kara Lindsay it's uncanny. She starts at her little desk and then moves her typewriter to Pulitzer's desk to get her inspiration. She also goes to take a drink of the alcohol on his desk, but puts it down once she smells it

During Jack's speech before the fight, the Delanceys are making fun of him (pretending to cry, yawning, etc.)

The fight scene was extremely short (no real pause between the start of the fight and the police showing up) but it was still really good

Crutchie gets carried away over a shoulder like a sack of potatoes (it was so fucking funny, I really struggled not to laugh)

Snyder gets face to face with Jack at the end of the strike but just has this evil laugh right in Jack's face before Jack runs away

Santa Fe??? CHILLS. he was SO GOOD. he pauses to heave breaths like he's crying and i.

Mr. Jacobi thought he was hilarious with his "fish in the desert" comment and repeated it to himself as he walked offstage

This production it was "there's a headline even Race could sell" 💀 poor Race (there was no Elmer in this show)

KONY was amazing. the bit where Katherine and Les have their little tap competition happens and then they like do a few twirls together it was so cute

Letter from the Refuge was excellent, Crutchie was on the top bunk with two newsies on the bottom. When the song swells the first time, they're gesturing at each other like neither wanted to be the one to tell him to shut up, it was amazing

During WWH Reprise when Jack calls Pulitzer a snake, he reaches back and grabs a fist full of Davey's shirt, who then has to get Jack's attention, and Jack smooths it down all apologetic like. love it

Also during WWH Reprise, DAVEY is the one who sings the "we've got Jack" line

Spot's voice was AMAZING

Something To Believe In was really good, they harmonized so well together, Jack really belted the last "me" at the end and his voice just. ugh i loved it

Jack tried to spit shake Roosevelt so Davey and Spot LEAPT forward to grab his hand and stop him. Davey wiped Jack's hand with his hand, and then wiped his hand on his pants, and Davey and Spot were talking quietly amongst themselves while gesturing at Jack. iconic

"He doesn't do happiness does he" and Katherine shook her head like "yeah no"

Jack's mocking of Pulitzer "it's a compromise we can all live with" was perfect

Roosevelt had the funniest fucking fake moustache, it was this big black thing oh my god, i went back to the IG to check and he was NOT wearing it in the photo they posted, no idea what that was about lmao

Anyway the whole show was amazing and today's the last day of it, so I'm really glad I caught it when I did

So i’ve just finished The Glory…

I’ve heard this show raved about since it came out and really only decided to watch it finally because my aunt told me how amazing it was- that being said, I found it just… good? Its obviously a heartbreaking story but the way i’ve seen people talk about it, I was expecting to be blown away and hanging on to every second of every episode and I just wasn’t??? It was just something for me to binge. And maybe thats bc I saw some spoilers but I don’t necessarily think that changes much, I enjoyed watching it but if anything I think people may have been overhyping it imo. Honestly some of it may also have to do with Song Hyekyo, I think she’s an amazing actress but idk like there was a certain lack of emotional connection there? At least for me. (& i know her character is supposed to come off cold which she did but it was more than that) I 100% wanted her to get revenge on her bullies and rooted for her doing it but I also felt like it all just fell a bit flat? (To me her best episode was 12 but i do feel the rest were just okay) I don’t really know how to explain it. I'd have to say my favorite things about the series was how well Lim Jiyeon played her character and the father-daughter relationship between Doyeong & Yesol. The last two eps in particular were pretty mid (i actually watched the final ep in 1.5x speed) i'm glad everyone got their just deserts but when the credits rolled on the last ep i kinda went "...that it?" After finishing it I think yes, this was a good drama but I don’t see myself rewatching it or going out of my way to tell people they need to watch it bc its just so good but perhaps I just personally didn’t vibe that much with this particular series!!! Overall I’d give The Glory a 7/10.

I’m gonna rant on some faves because boredom and so my mind doesn’t explode. SPOILERS AHEAD !!!

Max Mayfield — MY QUEEN. If Ryan Reynolds is every straight mans crush than Sadie Sink is my straight girl crush 😻 I remember watching season 2 and seeing her for the first time and felt SO HAPPY !! As a girl who has guy friends and (at the time) only hanged with them she made me so much less insecure about that fact. Her acting was on POINT season 4 and my fave thing the whole season and SHE STILL GOT THE END OF THE STICK. But season 3 Max doesn’t get enough love imo because let’s be real, she’s the real mpv for helping El to get in her own skin. Max & Sadie are my queens and I’ll make sure they are treated as MUCH.

Lance Sweets — HONESTLY WANT HIM TO BE MY OLDER BROTHER OKAY, or that cool uncle. I love him to DEATH. His dokiness, his smarts, his awkwardness & his weird as way of being a therapist to Bones & Booth but yeah know— I’ve already spoiled myself and I’m just SAD. I love Booth as well, but whenever he or Bones talk down to him pisses me right off. NO. HE IS APART OF THE FBI FOR A REASON YOU BABOONS. I love him with Daisy (even if she can be a bit overbearing at times) but I also low key ship him with Fisher simply by the fact there both high class NERDS. Anyway, love him.

Chrissy Cunningham — Unpopular opinion, but I felt Chrissy death more than both Barbs AND Eddies. Let me explain. Barb because she wasn’t really a fleshed out character imo, beside being Nancy’s smart and overly safe friend, but honestly Steve and Nancys relationship in S1 was cute imo and didn’t deserve half the shit it got from Barb. ANYWAY. I loved Eddie a lot, like all ST fans, but his death felt so rushed and so unsatisfactory to the plot and the end talk with Dustin & Eddie’s uncle just made me hate it more. Chrissy got character development from the moment she was on screen until her untimely demise. Her trauma was so real, something I kind of related to in my own way. I just loved her and it was the only time the season I actually shed a tear.

Rudy Wade — Probably the most unrecognisable name on the list, but Rudy is from S3-S5 of the British TV show Misfits, about powers and crap and it’s GREAT. Anyway, Rudy’s power is what I like to call “Emotional Doubles”. He basically has a double of himself but is all his bottled up emotions in that double. He’s a character I relate to way to much, mainly in the aspect of hiding emotions to the point it’s unhealthy. I’ve loved him since he appeared. He’s cocky, he’s hyper sexual (like a lot of British characters tbh), WAS depressed (I’m not sure if he still is) & basically dubbed himself the uncle of Finn (another character). I just love his personality, as well as his double, Rudy Too. The guy who plays them is SUCH a good actor because the two (plus a third, but we don’t talk about the ukulele villain) are the same person but he plays them so well that you can just tell in their faces which one is which. He’s just great and I love him OKAY?!

Neville Longbottom — I had my Harry Potter phase in and out for like 3 years now and every time I go back to Neville and I just can’t believe he was treated like THAT. My boy doesn’t deserve that shit man. Let him enjoy plants and kick some BLOODY ASS. He’s probably the one character I enjoy both in the movies and books that I didn’t have any complaints about (expect his thing with Luna, idk I’m very picky with ships when it comes to certain characters). He’s GREAT. He’s AMAZING. I just wanna give him a hug so much omg. Snape can die all over again by me for what he put Neville (and Harry and EVERYONE) through.

Ginny Weasley — I WILL NOT STAND GINNY SLANDER. She was done so dirty in the movies I’m still PISSED. She was basically my favourite in the books and than the movies royally pissed me off. The stage play was good though, Australian Ginny actress was great in it. I hate how they did all the Weasley dirty in the movies, but I can’t change anything so I’m just gonna rant. In the books she was the girl I wanted (and honestly still want) to be. She’s sporty, she’s pretty, she can talk to anyone and doesn’t take shit from anyone and we LOVE TO SEE IT. Her romance with Harry was kind of rushed at the end of the books, but better than the movies lol. She’s the best and I’m honestly slaty she really only got to name one child with someone she liked, aka Luna as her only daughters middle name.

ACA Here, so I was just albe to watch all the scenes of Carina and Maya (I refuse to watch anything with Grey sorry)

First of all Stefania continues to improve her speech pattern/accent/pronunciation , I’m very impressed, it’s still a tiny bit forced if you pay close attention to it, especially when Stefania talks medical and long sentences, her stops are still a bit too measured and not 100% natural but she improved tons, she has a pretty great dialect coach imo.

It does take time to adjust from a speech pattern technique that you are being using for all your life, but that’s totally normal, I’d love to see Stefania in other projects and see how these modifications she’s working on translate on other projects.

A part from this technical details, she was pretty amazing, the final part where she hides from Maya, holy shit, damn, no words only feelings.

What to say about Danielle!!!

She literally puts all the scenes on her very talented shoulders, I’m in awe with her acting, when she screamed at Carina while obviously try not to lose control and holding as much as possible: “STOP TELLING ME WHAT I NEED” I jumped, I got scared a bit by Maya for the first time, and I think Carina did too, it’s rare to be able to feel such strong physical emotion/response from a scene for me and this did it (I’m not complimenting the writings, cause a part from this, the rest was a fucking mess, cheap childish rookie predictable writing) do not let me start on how most of it becomes about Jack as usual, my hope is that they keep him out of Maya recovery and future reconciliation with Carina, we never really needed him and especially now!

Going back to Danielle, in my personal opinion she’s the most talented actress on S19 and most of GA (I put her very close to Sandra Oh) and she’s wasted there, I really hope for her career, that once she’s out of this shitty show, she can get a real project where she can show off without restrictions and have all the artist freedom she wants while given great writing to work on!

One thing is that some actors, once they played a specific character for years, even doing a great job, have problem adjusting to other shows/characters, they kinda disappoint me on other projects, so I guess what I’m saying I hope she’s not a character actress but a more complete one, only time will tell!

There’s nothing you can do, Stefania and Danielle have this once in a lifetime chemistry connection, that a few couple in acting had, I’m not gonna give you any examples because it could be very subjective, but some are undeniable, like their.

Anyway I’m not going more into it cause I could analyze their scenes for hours, but at the same time these scenes are so potent that I have problem watching them too many times, it took me a while to be able to watch them cause I knew they were way to powerful and indeed they were emotionally draining.

On another note I love how shitty Maya looked even if in a couple of close-up I could see a few brushes of make up.

She looked like death.

And I also love how I’m starting to dislike Maya a bit, I think Danielle did a great job on making us hating her (it’s not just the writing it’s literally her mannerisms and acting choices) I wanna see if they finally can give her a more complete storyline possibly a redemption healing one.

On the other side I won’t mind is Stef and Danielle leave the show, but it’s gonna be hard for them to get a project where they can have leading or even supporting roles especially Stefania, considering her Hollywood age, and her nationality, I know it’s sounds terrible said like this, believe me I know it’s sound horrible even by only writing it, it wanna makes me vomit and cry, but this is how Hollywood works, even if things are getting better, and there are more roles for over 40/50 yrs young actresses, it’s simply the truth for TV, I understand if they decide to do 10 more years of GA or S19, I mean even Ellen is tired of it but she’s economically set for life at this point.

You don’t wanna throw away a good steady job, also if it goes after season seven they prob go on syndication and can ask for a raise, and that’s why I think season 7 will prob be the last.

Anyway as usual I wrote twice as much of what I wanted but half of what I was thinking…

Thanks for the great thoughts/insight as always. I totally agree with the assessment on Stefania and Danielle. Danielle is super talented and yes, I hope that once Station 19 is over she's able to branch out and do other projects because her talent deserves to be recognized. I don't think she's just a one character type of talent, I think she'll excel with any kind of material. You can just tell.

The makeup team did a great job with Maya! And yes, Hollywood is definitely a tough business so I would assume they would want to stay at a steady/stable job until they can't anymore. But I hope for both of their sakes they're able to be successful elsewhere when the time comes because they both deserve it. That's an interesting point about what happens with a show after season seven, it does make me wonder if seven will be the last too. I mean it's hard to say because ABC does an awful job at promoting it and have for a while now so who knows. It's still doing better than Grey's though in ratings lol but I guess we'll see!

Just Saw "The Color Purple" Last Night!! 😁😁 (My Movie Review)

WOW! Where do I even begin?? First of all, let me just start off by saying that I LOVED this movie! I really enjoyed it. 😃 You just knew that you were in for a wonderful ride when you heard the opening number to this film. I love musicals just in general, but there's just something extra special about seeing black talent, black voices, and black actors dancing, singing, and acting onscreen. 🥰 The whole entire film was a magical moment for me, and a sense of great pride. Sort of like the feeling I got when I saw "Black Panther" in theaters for the first time. 😊

I will say too that this film was very well shot. I kept being in awe of the cinematography, the camera angles, the vibrant colors, the use of lighting, the gorgeous shots of Georgia, etc. It was so very well done. You can tell that they spent a lot of time, hard work, and energy on this film to make it very special and of high quality. 👌🏾

I also loved how this film kind of had a stage/theater feel to it. You can tell that it was a musical theater play before it hit the big screen.

The Music The MUSIC!!! Oh the music!!! 🎵🥰 I've never seen the stage play musical, so a lot of the songs were new to me, but I liked a lot of the songs that were in the film. I also loved how they kept some of the original songs that were in the original 1985 film, like "Miss Celie's Blues (Sister)", and "Maybe God is Tryin' to Tell You Somethin'". 😊

The Acting The acting was very well done. I felt like everyone pulled their weight and there weren't any "weak links" in the cast at all. Halle did amazing....I think she has a great career ahead of her in acting if she keeps it up. Danielle Brooks...Omg she was AWESOME. I almost feel like she stole the show in some scenes lol....

Colman Domingo did a great job. I think Danny Glover was a bit more unlikable in the original film, but Colman is a very good actor, and I felt like he did a great job in this role.

I love my girl Taraji! She is SO very talented! Her voice is really great too. While I was watching the film, i couldn't help but remember everything she was saying on the press tour regarding unequal pay in Hollywood, and anytime I saw her onscreen I just couldn't believe that someone with her great talent still feels like she has to fight and scrap to just get a smidgen of what other actresses get in HW, and how she's always having to start right back at the BOTTOM. Smh...it's really sad. 🤦🏾‍♀️ Fantasia Barrino....OMG.... Like, I remember this woman on American Idol!!!! I am so proud of her and how far she's come. 😊 She did an AMAZING job in this! She thoroughly deserved her Golden Globe nomination. 👏🏾 She probably won't win, but she definitely deserved her nomination. I always feel like when someone has to not only act but also sing, dance, (or even play a musical instrument) onscreen, they usually are doing WAY more "work" than others who are just having to simply "act" onscreen lol. I will go to my grave saying that. But! I know this year is a pretty tight race for the "Best Actress" category, so, if she doesn't win, then it is what it is. 🤷🏾‍♀️ Just being nominated is an honor.

The Pros:

This is more like a pro AND a con (I'll explain)... But the fact that they cut out a lot of stuff from the original movie kind of made the story move a lot quicker, and I appreciated that!

I liked that the film didn't feel AS heavy as the original 1985 film. The film still had a lot of heavy elements in it (don't get me wrong), but you don't get to experience just HOW heavy the film is because there's a lot of singing and dancing, and they kind of gloss over certain things in the story (imo). This is actually probably a good thing, especially for a film coming out during the Holiday season lol.

The acting was superb.

It seems that they added a few more things to this film that was in the original book by Alice Walker, so that was a nice touch.

The Cons:

I liked how they cut stuff from the film, but at the same time I didn't lol. I'm so glad that I saw the 1985 version FIRST before seeing this version, because I think there would have been some elements that I wouldn't have fully appreciated because I didn't have the context. The 1985 version is pretty long and more slow-moving, but I felt like it added way more depth to everything that was taking place in the story. The 2023 version almost banked on the fact that you've probably already seen the 1985 version, and they didn't spell everything out for you...which, again...imo was a good thing and a bad thing at the same time lol. I can't explain it.

OVERALL SCORE: 8/10

Overall, very well-done movie! Loved the acting, loved the music, loved basically everything! 😊

An unpopular opinion about ST!

Tryna get my ass canceled or something? Haha

Alright… here goes, because I’m gonna list several, and probably lose followers.

1) I don’t really ship Hellcheer (I don’t see them working long-term), but they might have, who knows? I feel like they went the traditional bad boy with a popular girl route, and it just… it annoyed me. I love Chrissy individually, but I would’ve rather seen her with Robin. That would’ve shocked me more, tbh.

2) I don’t like how they seemed to suck out every bit of Jonathan’s goals and aspirations.

3) I believe Billy could’ve had a redemption arc.

4) Jason was a total douche bag, but I also think he could’ve been redeemed in some form. I believe his upbringing was a MAJOR factor in his evangelical attitude, just as I believe Billy’s behaviors were all learned/forced onto him from his dad.

5) I think the idea of Nancy and Steve again, is an insult to the character developments they’ve both had.

6) Barb’s death was ignorant (I think she would make for an amazing member of the group).

7) Hopper’s transformation bugs me a little, but we’ll see how he is next season.

8) This isn’t unpopular, but they should’ve kept Bob alive and had him marry Karen Wheeler.

9) I do ship Steddie (because it would’ve been different), but again, as with Hellcheer — I don’t know if it would’ve worked long term. So with both ships I’m kind of 50/50 on both sides.

10) I love the actress that plays Vickie, but the character being a love interest for Robin wasn’t my cup of tea. The chemistry with Robin and Nancy was off the characters, imo. But whatevs.

I think that’s all I have, for now. I know the Billy and Jason thing, plus the shipping comments might get me in trouble, but it’s how I feel :/ Not liking Billy because of his disgusting actions is perfectly justifiable (I don’t condone them either). And whoever you ship — I support it! I know Eddisy is cannon and Steddie is not—trust me, I know! ❤️❤️

i was pretty much commanded to watch Dune 1 because Dune 2 is apparently a must-see in the movie theater and i hadn't seen Dune 1 and Dune 2 will leave the theaters shortly

i'm just kinda gun-shy about seeing movies, they're usually just so fucking disappointing the last number of years i practically see only repeats of safe movies, boring right?

so anyways, yeah, saw Dune 1. considering i had a few years where i mostly read and re-read dune 1/2/3 books (then suffered with 4, then a few years later read 5&6 and said ok this is just getting fluffy, refused to read the other stuff that Frank Herbert didn't write because he was dead), and having suffered through Lynch's disastrous version - i never saw the syfy version - this movie was pretty dang good.

the good: followed the book story line surprisingly closely. really surprising.

also good and surprising: there's a character that was male in the book, they made female. good character; a named one; making the character female didn't change the plot at all, so why not? good deal. in retrospect, you could've done this with a few others, including some of the more badass ones.

the bad: i can't point to anything actually bad about it other than

the ugly: i had the sound up REALLY LOUD with a good sound system. i couldn't understand half of the dialog. i still knew what was going on because of the aforementioned being well-versed in the story... but still, wtf? and the darkness! i turned every light out, i usually have a dim light in the room because my eyes don't like hella contrast, but with true full darkness (there are zero lights outside anywhere here, and no moon last night) some scenes i would've got almost as much out of by turning the TV off. fucking hollywood, yeshua eff christo

specific things under the cut.

further observations and specific complaints:

Thufir was the Duke's master of assassins. In the movie, this guy may've been a mentat but he's not going to assassinate anyone. maybe in his youth he could've but book-Thufir was still a physical badass - not a Gurney or Duncan but still a lethal danger. You could easily imagine him and Piter de Vries circling each other in the arena. Not this guy. This guy was too nice, too.

The ornithopters were AMAZING. Loved them. damn. seriously, i didn't consider damselflies in my imagination before but what a perfect model. Whoever designed that deserves an Oscar, i hope there's a category for that. Does raise a question as to why is it an "orni" thopter if it's more buglike, but I'll let that slide. Also enjoyed the sand compactor which was mentioned in the book but i previously had no good visual on that.

The carryall (spice crawler mover/rescuer) was supposed to be a really big thopter. I think what they had in the movie probably makes more sense, kinda. Though those balloons were probably way too small to help much at all, but maybe spice gas has super intense buoyancy, or maybe those were some special suspensor globe thingy thing idk. Regardless, a thopter big enough to pick up a crawler seems a bit absurd once you see the size of the crawler (which the movie got right, it's a reasonable sized thing - consider that the worms always come and will clean up the spice blow, so you can't just use a small crawler and come back - you need to get all the spice from the blow right now).

Muad'dib is cute. I mean the kangaroo mouse. Not the mousy actor.

I thought Jessica was played a little too weepy, book-Jessica wasn't unfeeling but she was ready for battle pretty much all the time. She was seriously a strong and intense woman, and while she had her "human" moments she wasn't weepy except when they were in the tent after the storm. i don't think this is the fault of the actress and think she did a good job.

I was ready not to like paul in this movie because of the actor, but he did a decent job. i'm not well versed in current young male actors so i can't suggest a better one; there's likely a better one IMO but it wasn't bad

They cut the political dinner in Arrakeen and that's ok. it was interesting in the second or third read of the book but it bogged down the beginning of the first read (gg i almost stopped reading the book because of the slow beginning the first time) and was probably an easy cut making the movie. They also cut the solarium/greenhouse and moved Mapes's confrontation with Jessica forward. Way forward. That should've been completely private without a house guard present, Mapes would not have shown the blade with anyone else around. Are crysknives special or not? Apparently only kinda.

I don't recall there being a fairly big deal about the duke letting Duncan Idaho join Stilgar's sietch as compensation for some of Stilgar's men having been killed when trying to warn the Atriedes of a treachery. We just get duncan dancing around looking happy about whatever instead. It was a major coup getting him in there and having their trust that way, Leto's entire strategy banked on alliance. While Duncan & Gurney & Thufir (haha movie-thufir sorry) had trained a fighting force to within a hair's breadth of sardaukar strength, they couldn't do it large scale, and he knew that the fremen would allow them to take on the sardaukar face-to-face and win - safeguarding the house if not forcing a political marriage.

Speaking of marriage. "I should have married you". wha????? yes us readers understood. Everyone else: the fuck does this mean? They completely glossed over the politics that underpinned the entire story.

Still it seemed to me like they'd just landed on Arrakis when they came under attack; in the book i'm pretty sure there were at least a number of days if not weeks - seemed a bit quick and compressed. they at least needed to wait for the next heighliner, right?

Yueh's conditioning was never brought up so the shock that he was the traitor wasn't there. He had a pretty serious part, and the lengths that the baron went in subverting the conditioning crucial, but yueh was just some guy in the movie. nice to see they kept his symbol in the thopter but there was no reason given why it was even there, how had he left the goodies in the right thopter? in the book - he and specifically called out a desert-prepared thopter to use in disposing of P&J.

Sardaukar - first, salusa secundus was known as the emperor's prison planet, not army planet. nobody knew for certain where the sardaukar came from, though Leto &co strongly suspected it was S.S. surprise that SS is where nazi looking army dudes are from, right? yeah well ok nm. still. Also: the sardaukar were talked about in the book such that you could actually see their faces (remember when thufir was captured? oh wait they cut that from the movie too). why would they fight with this weird ass helmet on that blocks so much vision? are you trying to make pathetic imperial troopers? even under shaddam hussein iv, a sardaukar was still considered a match for seven typical landsraad levies - even if that's down from 10, 7:1 is still really badass.

Ok I mentioned the gender swap character - Liet Kynes - as I said, the character being male didn't matter to the plot so it's cool that they found another slot (in this as-is-typical mostly male movie) for a woman. But, what a stupid way to kill her off. She took like three steps outside the base onto the sand and called the maker and just stood there like a fucking idiot. Big surprise she got stabbed in the back isn't it? I think they could've done it better. Also this ended lost the ability to have the scene from the appendix which gives a lot of backstory about Arrakis (with Pardot Kynes).

Given that they did it to Kynes, why stop there? Thufir could've easily been female. I've never met a male Thufir, so it's not an obviously male name. What about Gurney? Duncan is kinda a male name, so you can keep him male I guess. Do we have to keep the Fremen so patriarchical that a woman can't lead a sietch? They let Kynes be female, and Kynes as pretty much the leader of the Fremen, in fact if not in name, so if they're ok with Kynes being a woman, Stilgar could've just as well. I'm fine with the H being male because they're obviously nazis... but does the Guild have to be all male? Don't forget Dune was written in a different time, but there's no reason we can't swap more.

When Paul & Jessica meet the fremen after the desert crossing, Paul pwning Jamis as he gtfo'd was key to Jamis being a hothead. ok jamis was a hothead all the time anyways but he was particularly pissed off about this little shit getting the drop on him and that's really why the fight happened. What's a sayyadina? i know and you may know, but my movie date didn't have a clue and neither did 90% of the movie watchers; in the book jessica was surprised to hear the word used at this point and realized the opportunity to take advantage of the natives' fremen superstition as a result.

Book-Chani gave Paul some tips about how jamis turns to the (right?left? i don't remember) after a particular attack. Why? Seems like she's already besotted with Paul or something after such a quick time? I liked the movie-Chani's attitude more, no tips or tricks, good luck i'll help jamis drink your water tonight white boy. Definitely more realistic.

Also in the final fight scene, i'm really surprised they didn't take advantage of this - in the book they took off stillsuits for the ritual fight. This is the reason given why the winner of a fight gets the loser's water, because they lose water due to perspiration in the process. As i said, surprised they didn't give the audience a show and have the actors strip to loincloths for the fight. Would it have been the case if one or both contestants was female?

ok that's more than a couple and i'd probably find more if i watch it again but i'll stop here and reiterate that

besides the seemingly long complaint list this was a good movie and overall really well done. i always figured that this book had too much going on in the characters' heads to make a good movie but i guess i was wrong and that's good. could it have been better? sure. i'd like to see a director's cut with the dinner and thufir's capture. oh and gurney shacking up with the smugglers too, that's not there.

No because even I don't know how I managed to dodge them that well 😭 buy ya I agree I was pretty disappointed with how rushed the uncharted one felt (although my brother did say that it was supposed to be set in a time before the games start..? But idk) it was well made in the sense that if you don't compare it to the game but making it a movie to begin with, you already knew it wouldn't do the game justice..

(spoiler warning for tlou for whatever I've rambled below here)

Although, in tlou they didn't go exactly as the game I don't dislike that because stuff does need to be explained, or seem more plausible to make it engaging and yes! Hey voice is so so distinct! I'm kinda curious to see how they portray Ellie from the second game, because the actress who plays her (imo) doesn't give those rough vibes..? I don't know how to explain it but I am very curious to see how she or whoever plays older Ellie will do it, can't wait for season 2 ><

not only was the uncharted one rushed, they changed stuff from the actual storyline that made it far too distracting for me to even try to enjoy it. like even if it's supposed to be set before the games, there's backstory in the games that was too changed to make it make sense -- just as you said, if it were an individual movie, it would be good, but they shouldn't have named it uncharted just to pull people in imo.

i like what they did with tlou bc they focused more on character building. they gave more importance to the character and getting closer to the character than non-stop action sequences and it was amazing storytelling. idk if you listened to the podcast (you should cause it's amazing to listen to the showrunners speaking about the changes and decisions that they took) but they explained that it's obviously different mediums, and if the game didn't have all those action sequences, then it wouldn't really be an engaging game, whereas with a show, if you constantly give action episode after episode, it would tire the viewers out completely.

honestly i thought that she didn't -- but then episode 8 rolled around and i could definitely see her continuing doing ellie and portraying ellie as a more grown, gruff character. mind you i've loved bella ramsey since the start, but she just got stronger and stronger throughout the entire season.

god now i just want to watch it all over 😓😓
