So, are you new to Watcher?

Whether you just discovered the dudes from Buzzfeed Unsolved premiered a new ghost hunting show or you stumbled across Ghost Files without having ever seen Ryan and Shane before, perhaps you find yourself a bit lost regarding Watcher.

So here I present a not-quite-short (yet I hope comprehensive) guide to Watcher Entertainment!

What is Watcher?

Back in 2019, three ex-BuzzFeed employees (Ryan Bergara and Shane Madej from BuzzFeed Unsolved and Steven Lim from Worth It) joined forces and announced they were launching a new production company and YouTube channel called Watcher. They toiled at it for an entire year and their new channel premiered on January 10th, 2020 with seven shows, the first of which was Puppet History (but more on the shows later).

They started with a grand total of five employees: the three cofounders, Brittney Lee (Production Supervisor) and Anthony Frederick (Creative Director of Post Production). Now, Team Watcher has grown to include several more people, including some ex-BuzzFeeders like Katie LeBlanc (who used to produce BFU and Worth It, today is Head of Development at Watcher), Annie Jeong (who you may know from Worth It and the Berry Boys video featuring Ryan and Shane, now a Senior Creative Producer) and Mark Celestino (cameraman for BFU, now Senior Creative Producer at Watcher).

Currently, Watcher presents a new episode of whichever show it's currently in season (right now it's Ghost Files of course) every Friday at 12 PT. Between shows, or sometimes on Wednesdays, they might air One-Offs, which are smaller, well, one off videos. Over at their Patreon you can find more content including:

Watcher Weekly+, a weekly talk show featuring any combination of cofounders and/or Watcher crew, where they answer fan questions and sometimes open fan mail. NOTE: for a taste of these, you can refer to their now-extinct Watcher Weekly show, formerly airing on Wednesdays over at YouTube dot com.

For higher tiers, a monthly livestream also featuring any combination of cofounders where they shoot the shit for an entire hour

Onto the shows:

Watcher has many shows. A whole lot of them. Ryan, Steven and Shane are very creative guys and it shows. When they first started, they began with a new episode of a different show every week, which was for some people very confusing. They've settled into airing whole seasons now, so after we're done with the premiere season of Ghost Files, we'll move onto a new season of Puppet History and then onto another show.

Because it's so many shows, I'll only describe the ones that are still being produced, along with the shows that premiered for the first time in 2022, in chronological order.

Puppet History

Helmed by Shane Madej, this was the first show that appeared on Watcher and the host, a puppet named The Professor (played by Shane) has become the de facto mascot of Watcher. If you liked the Hot Daga and Ruining History, this is essentially its spiritual successor. Here, The Professor leads Ryan and a different guest through a journey of a wacky historical event, while they compete to see who will become History Master. The lore gets really deep.

Top 5 Beatdown

A Ryan Bergara concoction, Shane and Ryan debate asinine topics ranging from the hottest Disney cartoon characters to top dog breeds, comparing top 5 lists and often fighting about it. When they do not fight, the duo showcases their one shared braincell. In every episode, they have a guest who knows more about the topic than them.

Are You Scared?

Also created by Ryan Bergara, Are You Scared? began as a Zoom show and evolved to being shot in person after pandemic restrictions eased. Ryan tells Shane one of the spookiest stories from the internet, and they both laugh over it. In a way, the format is similar to Unsolved, and the promotion campaigns for it are hilarious: once, Ryan pretended he'd been kidnapped by The Professor and made an entire photo shoot about it.

Too Many Spirits

From the galaxy brain of Katie LeBlanc, this was the first show shot in person during the pandemic, and also the only Friday show to feature all three co-founders. Ryan and Shane gather in a backyard to read ghost stories submitted by fans, but they get drunker and drunker every episode. They start off very normal, but by the fourth and last episode of each season, they are absolutely unhinged. By the way, the drinks? Handmade by Steven Lim himself, who turns out, is a (not) wonderful bartender. In the most recent seasons, we get an actual professional bartender, Ricky Wang, who has a very special working relationship with Steven.

Dish Granted

Created by and for the suffering of Steven Lim, Dish Granted is about love and food and friends. In each episode, Steven sets out to grant a friend of his their dream dish, even if it costs Steven his own sanity. Currently, the episode with Simu Liu holds the honor of being the Watcher video with most views. I love it, and you should too.

Worth a Shot

In each episode of this show hosted by Ricky Wang (of Too Many Spirits fame), he creates a special cocktail for a different guest. Ricky definitely knows what he is doing, and so, this show has a very soothing quality to it.

Eat Like Me

Also made by Steven Lim. Join Steven as he learns more about different cultures and/or lifestyles as he eats for one day as someone else. In the pilot season, he discovered the joys of the diet of a Korean college student, the woes of British people, and the pain of a professional eating competitor.

Pretty Historic

Created by Selorm Kploanyi and directed by none other than Sara Rubin, Pretty Historic looks at history from another point of view: beauty and makeup. It is an incredibly pretty show, the aesthetics are top notch, and it dives into really interesting subjects. I am begging for y'all to watch this.

Ghost Files

Finally, Ghost Files doesn't really need an introduction. Ryan Bergara's baby, the official successor to BuzzFeed Unsolved, and in the words of Shane Madej (to which I subscribe wholeheartedly), the perfect ghost hunting show. Only an episode and it's corresponding Debrief have been released until now, but it's so good. So different from BFU in a much, much better way, while still feeling incredibly familiar. Wow. The Ghoul Boys have done it for real.

However, Watcher has a vast catalogue with even more shows than those, plus all of their one-offs. My personal favorites and recommendations to you are Weird and/or Wonderful World (with Shane and Ryan) and Homemade (hosted by Steven). Homemade particularly feels like a work of art that I don't feel gets appreciated as much as it should.

Also, I greatly recommend watching Ryan and Shane Eat Everything Boysenberry (Again): Bless Annie for doing this for us. Berry Boys 2, once again taking off at Knott's Berry Farm.

BUZZFEED 10 REASONS WHY FANS BELIEVE Y/N Y/L/N AND JACK HARLOW ARE NO LONGER TOGETHER

Actress Y/n Y/l/n and rapper Jack Harlow have been going strong for nearly a year, but rumor start to go around that not everything is as perfect as it seems, with many fans believing that the famous couple secret called quits. A few theorized that the only reason the break up hasn’t been announced is to not take the focus of Y/n new movie, that just premiered last week. Yikes.

10 – Y/n isn’t as frequent on IG as usual.

The actress is known for her frequent use of the app, giving her fans little glimpses into her life, sharing recipes and tips.

9 – Jack reportedly isn’t staying in Y/n Los Angeles house.

The rapper, who is filming his first movie in town, is staying at an rented Airbnb rather than the 14-acre mansion his girlfriend keeps in Chatsworth.

8 – The actress shut down questions about her relationship during press junket.

“I believe we are here to talk about the film.” The actress said with a smile on her face, cutting off the interviewer who asked her about her relationship with Jack.

7 – Jack was spotted by paparazzi looking a little… down.

Handsome as always… But Jack indeed looked a little upset and annoyed.

6 – Both were snapped without their matching jewelry.

Fans noticed that Jack was missing some adornments on his fingers… if you know what I mean. And then it was noticed that Y/n also dropped the matching jewels… red flags?

5 – Y/n hasn’t been seen around LA.

Not that it's completely weird, but we're talking about a couple who barely were apart for half an hour.

4 – Jack was spotted looking cozy with a brunette…

and the (possible) ex couple's dog was together, Jacques didn't seem bothered by the new company.

3 – Y/n hasn’t been in any of Jack’s shows in a while.

I mean… She may be busy…

With her ex… Harry and Y/n were spotted eating at the Carbone. The former couple seemed to be having a fun time, and they clearly weren’t hiding, Y/n and Mr. Styles even took photos with fans on the way out.

1 – Sources claims that the actress isn’t very happy in Kentucky.

Yep. There's that too. According to a source, Y/n would be less than happy in Kentucky, mainly because 'Jack is never around', she feels very lonely as she doesn't know anyone there apart from him and his family, and this has been straining their relationship since the move.

The couple started on Instagram in response to a report that they are splitting up

Y/n Y/l/n and Jack Harlow have reportedly broken up — and the couple is shocked by the news.

Now a brunette, Y/l/n appears in the early morning live in a silk pink robe with her hair in a ponytail “So, I just found out I'm single…” The actress states in the beginning of her live.

The video gives us a small glimpse of the of what we imagine to be the couple's home in Louisville.

Harlow soon joins Y/n in the video —in bathrobe and wet hair—.

“Angel, did you know that according to sources close to us I hate Louisville? I didn't know that, but apparently it’s because I’m lonely.” Y/n tells her boyfriend.

“Can you repeat that for the gang of women I had in my kitchen this afternoon? My definition of lonely is a little different from this source…” Harlow says while casually opening the custom made powder blue fridge.

When asked about their new house in Kentucky, the actress briefly tells her followers that the reason she has been a little ‘off the grid’ was because they had been remodeling and decorating their new home, and informs them that AD made a tour of their entire property and the video should be up in their YT channel around July.

“Jack, babe, are you sad to not be staying at my former Chatsworth house? Apparently, you not staying there is a clear sign that we’re no longer together.” the actress asks her boyfriend, “The one you sold?” the rapper asks with a frown in the video.

This publication confirmed that the sale of the 14 acres estate in the Chatsworth neighborhood of Los Angeles was discretely handled by Sotheby’s in late-May.

Enter Simon, who although is known as the prodigious son of social elites is in reality, a recluse of a man who spends his days tinkering rather than learning social etiquette and proper decorum. Raphael is, quite understandably, enamoured.

Boy next door AU: Simon has lived next to Raphael for as long as he could remember. He’s had a huge crush on him for most of it.

Ghost Hunter (AKA buzzfeed unsolved) AU: Simon is a ghost hunter with his own channel, Raphael is the demon he picked up on the way. Simon walks into haunted buildings and Raphael prevents him from dying, usually he can also be found vehemently denying the very existence of the supernatural whilst alpha dogging the rest of the ghost and demons they encounter into submission.

Country town: Simon is a musician and Clary is an artist, a little time off in Bordertown wouldn’t hurt to get all those creative juices flowing. They enter a quaint little town and interact with the colourful locals. Simon is drawn to one in particular.

It is not something that is a result of PR. Chris is one of the celebrity investors in Jinx. He is the creative director of campaigns. He is the brand ambassador because of his authentic connection to his dog for which he is widely famous, the lovable "dog dad". It seems to be a smart match to provoke interest in customers to buy their product by promoting the organic relationship between a celeb and his famous dog.

Now if you look at the data that has been provided, you would see there is a pattern for promotion. It seems like his PR rs with Alba gets promoted in mags, after a few weeks Jinx content drops. Let's take an example from the data:

Chris made the laser focused comment on 15th July and it was talked in the media heavily the next days:

If we take a step back we might finally be able to understand the purpose of that comment. It served two purposes, he was seen as a poor sweet guy desperate to find the love of his life (teary-eyed made a remarkable effect on the audience) and then because of this super duper performance, he got talked heavily in the media. He got the due attention and then they promoted Jinx! It was all business!

Another interesting point Jinx's targetted audience is the upper middle class whose interest is in dining and wining and travelling. Look at how the relationship has been presented, a rich boyfriend taking his gf all over the world, fake sightings from the restaurants (DM and Okay magazine) to catch the eye of the customer. All articles published advertise the links to the previous articles published about that celeb a few days ago. The Jinx articles are promoted not only along with his rs with Dodger ofc but also with his PR rs.

If we look closely it is all very well orchestrated and targetted.

😎 I love history and learning new things so it wasn’t a huge stretch for me to dig into learning more about it and it is important to know all the facts. Also in the comics basically the whole family line of Wolverine’s Mother’s side was there at VERY SINGLE IMPORTANT POINT in their entire life , so our Wolvie has that in the form of This line of wartime nurses from Esther. The Mother’s side of the family was called Hudson , maybe that is what you can call the wartime nurse family line . Esther Victoria Hudson has a nice ring to it , huh? There is ALOT of give and lead-way that R is willing to give Nat , Almost ANYTHING GOES . BUT the ONLY THING that R will NOT FORGIVE is SLANDER on her beloved truck. She will not stand for it .

I like to think that in the universe of the darkest knight there is a Buzz Feed like show that goes over the unsolved true crime of what went down when R got her claws. The night She killed Thomas Logan after he had broken in and killed her father John Howlett and was trying to take R’s Mother and Her with Thomas ( and just had the bombshell of Thomas being her actual bio father as she stabbed him with the claws) . The night she ran away ( possibly with a childhood friend / maid- servant of the estate named Rose O’Hara like in the comics. And that friend was named as the killer by the boy who also broke in with his father and tried to force himself onto Rose )R’s mother called her a monster and then killed herself with the shotgun that killed R’s father John. And the buzz feed like people going over the history of R ( this is where R’s birth name could come to play) stating what she was like before that night ( I already stated what R was like in a separate post ). And the close relationship with her father and distant one with her mother and the close friendship she had with Rose and Dog ( the boy who broke in with Thomas and is her half brother) . The buzz feed people say all the theories and the one were people thought Rose did it . And the fact that nobody knows what happened to the two girls after that night and the crime remains unsolved. Or whatever R’s canon event that caused her claws to pop out that Vulture wants to do , but Wolvie ( both comic, movie and probably this one too) was ten to thirteen years old that night.

Another Buzzfeed like show that goes over the supernatural . This one is covering all the crazy shit that R did in her time in the wars ( especially WWI and WWII) . All the people she save , protected and tended to while she was gassed, shot and who knows what else. The people made her out to be an Guardian Angel , a Proactive spirit and a damn vengeful one to those who dared to put her charges in danger, and lastly some sort of Cryptid . The fact that R was in very single war since WWI and didn’t change a single bit and there is a multitude of records and photos of R doesn’t really help that case. The Shane like person in this show states that it could just be family members of the original R ( the one with Esther Hudson) that just looks incredibly like each of her family members. The Shane like person points to the Hudson family line as proof of this .

This is the last bit of this post . I believe that Esther took care of R while R was so busy taking care of everyone else. Esther MADE R be that vulnerable and receive the help and care that R so freely give to others. That was NOT an easy task and each and every Hudson took up that in their wartime Nursing. Since WWI and II were only 21 years apart it was easy to accept that R could have just been a nice or a daughter of Esther’s dear friend or R just aged extremely well. But as the wars and Hudson family line moved on it became dicey to explain ( you can chose if Esther or any of the Hudson family line knows the actual story) so it is ( like Vulture said) like this family thing that you don’t really talk about but go with. And any Hudson that comes across R ( Esther and the WWII nurse actually got ONE up close and alone shot of R) they know that she is safe and to just treat her like a family friend that is just there and that happens to go back to great- grandma Esther. They also know to take care of her and to MAKE her receive the care and help that R gives out. No matter what explanation each Hudson believes as fact for what or why R is the way she is they all follow in the footsteps of Esther .

I a couple of more things to say about Esther and the Hudson’s and the buzz feed like shows but will do it in a separate post as I don’t want to make this one too long . I am excited about part two of this world .

It's fun to learn all this history stuff with you! I was never super into history, but in this context it's very enlightening :)

I think the story would have gone much differently if Nat insulted R's truck. As in, R would have left her at the bar and gone home alone😭

Not R being a whole cryptid and the subject of a questionable YouTube channel 😂 But if she's been alive for that long, I'm sure someone has to have noticed and tried to get to the bottom of the mystery.

I could see this Buzzfeed-esque show bringing on someone who R actually saved (so they would probably be a very old person) but who speaks very highly of R, and wishes they knew what happened to R after the war. (And maybe after the video is published, R tracks down the old witness and sends them an anonymous post card assuring them she's okay, and the witness knows exactly who sent it. :)

As independent as R is, she definitely needs to be with someone who will look after her and almost force their help on her. Probably because she's led such a lonely life and out of necessity learned to only rely on herself. But once she opens up to people, they get to see how soft and caring she really is for the people she loves.

I eagerly await more of this Esther Hudson saga. 😎 anon, you're a genius.

One time I read an article (I believe on buzzfeed) about this woman who was playing with her dogs in her front yard when they, apparently out of nowhere, straight up ripped her arms off and I will NEVER forget how almost every comment on that article was from dog people claiming she abused the dogs with no evidence of that whatsoever because they could not imagine a dog doing a Bad Thing. And like one of the dogs was a boxer, which is a breed I'm very familiar with- they obviously don't rip owners arms off with their other breed of dog friends normally. But I also think it's absurd to claim someone abused those animals when sometimes dogs do fucked up shit. Doesn't make em evil or bad, sometimes dogs snap like people snap and that's fine no need to moralize which dogs are Bad Dogs but there's also no need to claim someone who went through a horrific tragedy and was victimized by their pets of all things was abusive to said pets with no proof.

Another person in the comments pointed out how weird and cult like everyone else was acting and as a cat person who has been told a number of times how awful and horrible my pets are I gotta agree lmao. Crazy what dog people will do to defend the obviously indefensible rather than being like "damn that's fucked up has anyone done a check on those dogs to see if maybe they've got a health issue that caused them to lash out like that" or otherwise act normal instead of jumping straight to victim blaming someone with no fuckin arms. Like damn dog people will call cats evil for eating you after you die (dogs do that too by the way, do you expect them to STARVE to death because you think your corpse matters more than your pets life? Wtf. Plus not all cats OR dogs will eat you post death so ??? Not to mention if I stick YOU in a room with nothing but dead grandma you will eat her too if I leave you there long enough why vilainize cats for *checks notes* eating food when starving) but then defend dogs doing literally the most fucked up shit I've ever read a pet doing. Of course the dogs were not evil or bad, sometimes shit happens and that says nothing about dogs as a whole but I wish cats got even REMOTELY the same respect from those same people. If you can acknowledge a couple dogs ripping their owners arms off probably doesn't make those dogs in particular evil there's no reason to treat all cats like they're evil incarnate.

In 2008, when I was a writer for the blog Feministe, commenters began requesting warnings at the top of posts discussing distressing topics, most commonly sexual assault. Violence is, unfortunately and inevitably, central to feminist writing. Rape, domestic violence, racist violence, misogyny—these events indelibly shape women’s lives, whether we experience them directly or adjust our behavior in fear of them.

Back then, I was convinced that such warnings were sometimes necessary to convey the seriousness of the topics at hand (the term deeply problematic appears a mortifying number of times under my byline). Even so, I chafed at the demands to add ever more trigger warnings, especially when the headline already made clear what the post was about. But warnings were becoming the norm in online feminist spaces, and four words at the top of a post—“Trigger Warning: Sexual Assault”—seemed like an easy accommodation to make for the sake of our community’s well-being. We thought we were making the world just a little bit better. It didn’t occur to me until much later that we might have been part of the problem.

The warnings quickly multiplied. When I wrote that a piece of conservative legislation was “so awful it made me want to throw up,” one commenter asked for an eating-disorder trigger warning. When I posted a link to a funny BuzzFeed photo compilation, a commenter said it needed a trigger warning because the pictures of cats attacking dogs looked like domestic violence. Sometimes I rolled my eyes; sometimes I responded, telling people to get a grip. Still, I told myself that the general principle—warn people before presenting material that might upset them—was a good one.

Trigger warnings migrated from feminist websites and blogs to college campuses and progressive groups. Often, they seemed more about emphasizing the upsetting nature of certain topics than about accommodating people who had experienced traumatic events. By 2013, they had become so pervasive—and so controversial—that Slate declared it “The Year of the Trigger Warning.”

The issue only got more complicated from there. Around 2016, Richard Friedman, who ran the student mental-health program at Cornell for 22 years, started seeing the number of people seeking help each year increase by 10 or 15 percent. “Not just that,” he told me, “but the way young people were talking about upsetting events changed.” He described “this sense of being harmed by things that were unfamiliar and uncomfortable. The language that was being used seemed inflated relative to the actual harm that could be done. I mean, I was surprised—people were very upset about things that we would never have thought would be dangerous.” Some students, for instance, complained about lecturers who’d made comments they disliked, or teachers whose beliefs contradicted their personal values.

To a certain degree, Friedman said, this represented a positive change. Mental illness was becoming less stigmatized than ever before, and seeking care was more common. But Friedman worried that students also saw themselves as fragile, and seemed to believe that coming into contact with offensive or challenging information was psychologically detrimental. In asking for more robust warnings about potentially upsetting classroom material, the students seemed to be saying: This could hurt us, and this institution owes us protection from distress.

Have we inadvertently raised a generation that has fewer tools to manage hardship?

Trigger warnings were only one part of a larger shift. Complaints quickly entered the wider culture, and were applied to “toxic” workplaces and “problematic” colleagues; students decried the “potential trauma” caused by ideas and objected to the presence of some speakers and works of art.

My own doubts about all of this came, ironically, from reporting on trauma. I’ve interviewed women around the world about the worst things human beings do to one another. I started to notice a concerning dissonance between what researchers understand about trauma and resilience, and the ways in which the concepts were being wielded in progressive institutions. And I began to question my own role in all of it.

Feminist writers were trying to make our little corner of the internet a gentler place, while also giving appropriate recognition to appallingly common female experiences that had been pushed into the shadows. To some extent, those efforts worked. But as the mental health of adolescent girls and college students crumbles, and as activist organizations, including feminist ones, find themselves repeatedly embroiled in internecine debates over power and language, a question nags: In giving greater weight to claims of individual hurt and victimization, have we inadvertently raised a generation that has fewer tools to manage hardship and transform adversity into agency?

since my days as a feminist blogger, mental health among teenagers has plummeted. From 2007 to 2019, the suicide rate for children ages 10 to 14 tripled; for girls in that age group, it nearly quadrupled. A 2021 CDC report found that 57 percent of female high-school students reported “persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness,” up from 36 percent in 2011. Though the pandemic undoubtedly contributed to a crash in adolescent mental health, the downturn began well before COVID hit.

Teenage girls report troublingly high rates of sexual violence and bullying, as well as concern for their own physical safety at school. But it’s not clear that their material circumstances have taken a plunge steep enough to explain their mental-health decline. The CDC study suggests that, over the past decade, bullying among high schoolers has actually decreased in certain respects. Today’s teenagers are also less likely to drink or use illicit drugs than they were 10 years ago. And even before pandemic-relief funds slashed the child-poverty rate, the percentage of children living in poverty fell precipitously after 2012. American public high schoolers are more likely to graduate than at any other time in our country’s history, and girls are significantly more likely to graduate than boys.

Jonathan Haidt: The dangerous experiment on teen girls

So what has changed for the worse for teenage girls since roughly 2010? The forces behind their deteriorating mental health are opaque and complex, but one big shift has been a decline in the time teenagers spend with their friends in person, dipping by 11 hours a week—a decline that began before the pandemic, but was badly exacerbated by it. Since 2014, the proportion of teens with smartphones has risen by 22 percent, and the proportion who say they use the internet “almost constantly” has doubled. Part of the issue may be a social-media ecosystem that lets teens live within a bubble of like-minded peers and tends to privilege the loudest, most aggrieved voices; this kind of insularity can encourage teenagers to understand distressing experiences as traumatizing. “I think it’s easier for them to artificially curate environments that are comfortable,” Shaili Jain, a physician and PTSD specialist, told me. “And I think that is backfiring. Because then when they’re in a situation where they’re not comfortable, it feels really alarming to them.”

Applying the language of trauma to an event changes the way we process it. That may be a good thing, allowing a person to face a moment that truly cleaved their life into a before and an after, and to seek help and begin healing. Or it may amplify feelings of helplessness and hopelessness, elevating those feelings above a sense of competence and control.

“We have this saying in the mental-health world: ‘Perception is reality,’ ” Jain said. “So if someone is adamant that they felt something was traumatizing, that is their reality, and there’s probably going to be mental-health consequences of that.”

Martin Seligman, the director of the Positive Psychology Center at the University of Pennsylvania, has spent the past 50 years researching resilience. One study he co-authored looked at the U.S. Army, to see if there was a way to predict PTSD. Unsurprisingly, he and his fellow researchers found a link to the severity of the combat to which soldiers were exposed. But the preexisting disposition that soldiers brought to their battlefield experiences also mattered. “If you’re a catastrophizer, in the worst 10 or 20 percent, you’re more than three times as likely to come down with PTSD if you face severe combat,” Seligman told me. “And this is true at every level of severity of combat—the percentage goes down, but it’s still about twice as high, even with mild combat or no obvious combat.”

In other words, a person’s sense of themselves as either capable of persevering through hardship or unable to manage it can be self-fulfilling. “To the extent we overcome and cope with the adversities and traumas in our life, we develop more mastery, more resilience, more ability to fend off bad events in the future,” Seligman told me. “But conversely, to the extent that we have an ideology or a belief that when traumatic events occur, we are the helpless victims of them—that feeds on itself.”

Seligman also found that some soldiers who experienced severe trauma could not only survive, but actually turn their suffering into a source of strength. “About as many people who showed PTSD showed something called post-traumatic growth, which means they have an awful time during the event, but a year later they’re stronger physically and psychologically than they were to begin with,” he said. But that empowering message has yet to take hold in society.

so what would be a more productive way to approach adversity? Friedman, the former medical director of the Cornell mental-health program, compares building resilience to physical exercise. “It’s like any form of strength training,” he told me. “People have no hesitation about going to the gym and suffering, you know, muscle pain in the service of being stronger and looking a way that they want to look. And they wake up the next day and they say, ‘Oh my God, that’s so painful. I’m so achy.’ That’s not traumatic. And yet when you bring that to the emotional world, it’s suddenly very adverse.”

The problem is that this idea—that to develop resilience, we must tough out hard situations—places a heavier burden on some people than others. Friedman pointed out that people who grew up under constant stress, perhaps owing to abuse, poverty, or food insecurity, may find that this stress is “erosive” to their ability to use those resilience muscles. The exercise metaphor rankled Michael Ungar, the director of the Resilience Research Centre at Dalhousie University, in Halifax, Canada. “Chronic exposure to a stressor like racism, misogyny, being constantly stigmatized or excluded, ableism—all of those factors do wear us down; they make us more susceptible to feelings that will be very overwhelming,” he told me. There are, after all, only so many times a person can convince themselves that they can persevere when it feels like everyone around them is telling them the opposite.Creating the conditions where resilience is possible is as much a collective responsibility as an individual one.

Tyffani Monford Dent, a clinical psychologist and an author whose work focuses on sexual violence and racial trauma, calls this “the resiliency trap.” Black women in particular, she told me, have long been praised for their toughness and perseverance, but individual resiliency can’t solve structural problems. From Dent’s perspective, young people aren’t rejecting the concept of inner strength; they are rejecting the demand that they navigate systemic injustice with individual grit alone. When they talk about harm and trauma, they aren’t exhibiting weakness; they’re saying, Yes, I am vulnerable, and that’s human. These days, patients are being more “transparent about what they need to feel comfortable, to feel safe, to feel valued in this world,” she said. “Is that a bad thing?”

Most of the experts I spoke with were careful to distinguish between an individual student asking a professor for a specific accommodation to help them manage a past trauma, and a cultural inclination to avoid challenging or upsetting situations entirely. Thriving requires working through discomfort and hardship. But creating the conditions where that kind of resilience is possible is as much a collective responsibility as an individual one.

if we want to replace our culture of trauma with a culture of resilience, we’ll have to relearn how to support one another—something we’ve lost as our society has moved toward viewing “wellness” as an individual pursuit, a state of mind accessed via self-work. Retreating inward, and tying our identities to all of the ways in which we’ve been hurt, may actually make our inner worlds harder places to inhabit.

“If everything is traumatic and we have no capacity to cope with these moments, what does that say about our capacity to cope when something more extreme happens?” Ungar said. “Resilience is partly about putting in place the resources for the next stressor.” Those resources have to be both internal and external. Social change is necessary if we want to improve well-being, but social change becomes possible only if our movements are made up of people who believe that the adversities they have faced are surmountable, that injustice does not have to be permanent, that the world can change for the better, and that they have the ability to make that change.

To help people build resilience, we need to provide material aid to meet basic needs. We need to repair broken community ties so fewer among us feel like they’re struggling alone. And we need to encourage the cultivation of a sense of purpose beyond the self. We also know what stands in the way of resilience: avoiding difficult ideas and imperfect people, catastrophizing, isolating ourselves inside our own heads.

In my interviews with women who have experienced sexual violence, I try not to put the traumatic event at the center of our conversations. My aim instead is to learn as much as I can about them as people—their families, their work, their interests, what makes them happy, and where they feel the most themselves. And I always end our conversations by asking them to reflect on how far they’ve come, and what they are proudest of.

That last question often elicits a powerful response. I started asking it because I hoped to let the women I met feel seen in full, beyond the worst things that had happened to them.

There was a time when personal strength was the quiver that held an arsenal of virtues required for our success in life. These days there is no quiver and there are no virtues. I've seen too many videos of girls reduce to tears over what they call microaggressions. The proper response to a micro aggression is micro annoyance not emotional collapse.

josie wears a crop top for a few days to see what all the fuss is about, and hopes to give some positivity in light of her worries as well as a world gone horribly wrong. just as a warning, this does get a little sexual so go ahead at your own discretion. it’s not my job to police you, nor does it give you the right to body-shame me and treat me like i’m gross.

I got inspired to do this by two things. the first being my own desire to wear crop tops: I remember wanting to wear them when I was a little kid and my parents both told me that they didn’t want me dressing like that because they thought it was “inappropriate”: more on that coming. I always thought that was so weird because you wear a piece of clothing, especially a crop top, because you feel like wearing it, not because you’re “asking for it.”

A corollary of this is my own body: the heavier I’ve gotten, the more I’ve wanted to wear just one at least once and see how I feel with it. I recently broke 270 pounds (!!!!!!!) and I really like being at this weight, too, like it feels like me; when I crossed the 250 pounds threshold in 2022, I started talking selfies with my gut out more, because… how could I not?

and as I’ve gone from slightly thick in the spring 2021 (and arguably thin all through quarantine) to fantastically chubby here in summer 2023, I just want to show off more and more. Helps that i’ve legitimately wanted to be chubby my whole life, too.

The second was (please don’t judge me) a post on Buzzfeed by a plus-size woman wearing them for a week and seeing what happens. The post was dated from 2015, and thus I wondered if we made any progress in the last 8 years, especially when bringing in a woman with a belly as round and prominent as mine.

I honestly had no idea where to find crop tops where I live, so I took my shirts and either tied them up at the back or rolled up the hem and tucked it under my bra. I also have my Temple of the Dog shirt, which I feel is (arguably) a crop top given it has accentuates everything, and it had that feel prior to my weight gain, too.

I’m obviously very biased but I have found that crop tops are especially hot if you’re on the round side.

There were two rules with me: the first is no wimping out. The second is do it when the maternal unit isn’t looking, either (as much as I love my mom, whenever I wanted to try out something like this, she’d always wig out. “No! No! I hate that! You’re not wearing that!”). Sorry, mom, but I’m wearing this. I have wanted to wear stuff like this forever, just like how I’ve wanted to be over 250 pounds forever.

On my first day, I wore my baggy shorts with my red low-cut top, and I tied up the back with a scrunchie, and I just let it ride up my belly until my waist was fully exposed.

One thing I noticed almost immediately was how much cooler it is. I wear those clothes as is on a day like that and I’m sweating, I am so hot. But with my shirt tied up at the back, the breeze feels so good on my belly and it cools me down a great deal. I had the sun at my back and it felt like I had been tempered.

Something else I noticed, too: I sit up straight more. My belly, round and very soft and bouncy, sat in my lap in almost dignified fashion. I sat out on the porch in the sun and it felt incredible. I really wish I had a big Reuben sandwich, curly fries, and a milkshake because I had just achieved sort of a goal.

I will say this: the temptation to tug down your shirt is very real. So is the urge to suck in (then again, I suck in even with the shirt down, so I almost immediately asked myself, “how is this any different?”). I started hitching my pants up more, too: a cropped shirt like that on its own accentuates your curves, but have a full hourglass like myself and I started to get the appeal of having your belly button cupped by the hem (I still think the hate on low-rise pants is completely unwarranted, though). And, unlike Buzzfeed, I really wasn’t feeling nervous or apprehended at all. If anything, I feel more like myself in a crop top.

On the second day, I wore a black shirt with a low neckline and—

I don’t get the issue, Buzzfeed. Actually , no, take that back, I do. “You’re fat! You have a big belly! No one wants to see that!” (Really? Because I started getting chubby last year and I have quite literally yet to hear that remark out in the wild).

I want to wear my shirts like this forever.

I noticed I was walking with more of a swagger, too, especially once I let my hair down and let it twirl around in the wind. And, yes: that + the sun on my skin felt utterly wonderful.

On the third day (today), I wore my Gorillaz shirt. The only thought going through my mind was “why does my mom hate this look?”

Full disclosure, I have actually never liked wearing oversized clothes. They make me feel amorphous: a big T-shirt always drapes off my boobs and hides my body. You know how billie eilish whines about not getting to wear whatever she wants because she feels insecure (i.e., bases her opinion of herself off of how other people perceive her, which is like the dumbest and most disempowering thing ever)? Well, with me, it was always not getting to wear whatever I wanted because nobody let me. Whenever I wanted to wear something that showed off my belly or some part of my body, or I would tie up the back with a scrunchie to tighten it up a bit, I would get scolded. “Good girls don’t dress like that. That’s so Britney Spears, I hate that look.” So I would be clothed in shitty hand-me-downs and things bigger than a circus tent, and everyone was happy save for me. Whenever a shirt rode up my body or, because I have always had kind of a round belly even while thin, it would peek out a bit, cue the “need to lose weight” comments.

I wasn’t forced to dress modest because of my own insecurity: I was forced to dress modest because of other people’s insecurities and hang-ups. My immediate family is the definition of insecurity: I have no doubt in my mind that my mom and dad both never liked taking me out clothes shopping because my mom never liked trying things on and often bemoaned about being too fat, and my dad was in way over his head. Can’t blame them, though: both of their families were ravaged with racism, sexism, homophobia, and legitimate fatphobia, and though they made a concerted effort to raise my brother and me well, it sort of seeped over. But you really are the sum of who you hang out with.

So, after these three days of me wearing a makeshift midriff shirt, I can proudly check in part of the way through the week to say that this is my look.

I also don’t really look like a fat girl when I dress like this, either, even with the stretchies and even when I turn to the side.

I’m 271 pounds with a 54 inch chest, 42 inch waist, and 55 inch hips. In the eyes of common people, I am very fat and need to lose half my weight before I can dress like this. But the truth of the matter is only you know how you feel internally. I was half my body weight once and I was still unhappy and often in pain (really, I had so much pain in my back when I was 180 pounds, and it was weird, I looked small and thin). People can say whatever they want and die mad about it, too. And that should always be the basis for dressing how you want. Guess ol’ billz and I do have something in common.
