#but c!dream very definitely *likes* c!tommy even if it’s how a child likes their favourite toy
Text
c!dream: let’s himself be imprisoned bc c!tommy threatened to kill himself otherwise, repeatedly refers to him as ““too fun”” and says their game will never be over, wanted to become immortal with him, went out of his way to keep him alive even when it’d be easier to let him die or kill him himself, spent at the very least a few weeks trying to condition him into “friendship”, was going to literally lock him in a prison so he couldn’t run away anymore
some people for some reason: c!dream hates c!tommy! c!dream wants nothing to do with him! he wants him gone! he just sees him as a pest and can’t stand him!

I 100% feel that anon who said that there are moments when you see development in c!tommy that can make you attached to him only for them to just...fall flat.
I think my favourite c!Tommy moments are 1) the walk with tubbo to the final disc confrontation with dream and 2) the entire hotel arc. Both were moments of reflection for c!Tommy that genuinely made me actually kinda like him as a character.
He had these moments of brilliance where he actually...considered how his actions affected the people around him and how they must have felt??? And what he feels??? Sometimes he said a sentence and I audibly screached because YES YES EXACTLY COME ON CHILD SELF-AWARENESS IS SO CLOSE YESS
And then it all just....disappeared into thin air in order to traumatize him more. He went straight back into being the character who I refuse to even entertain because I just get so annoyed that I have to turn the stream off.
And it's sad because there is potential there, there is a lot of potential in c!Tommy but it isn't used so his story just becomes a loop of trauma and shocking moments that personally get real old really quickly.
yeah! i don't really get people who say c!tommy improving and realizing he hurt people and wanting to make up / apologize for that is somehow wrong or "a byproduct of being hurt". we all know being hurt doesn't make people better, it's self-reflection while having support. i really wish he gets better, to be honest, for both himself and the other characters. he's extremely flawed, and that's alright, and he doesn't deserve to suffer for that, but i hope he can try to look out beyond himself more so that the consequences of his actions don't hurt him or others even more. i genuinely want that for him.
he's ... not in a very supportive environment, which is definitely a big chunk for why he tends to relapse or not get better - but he's always been non-self-aware. that's not a trauma response to any degree. he's always been insensitive and brash to the point where he hurt others' feelings without any remorse because he believed he was always in the right and didn't expect or want consequences for his actions as a result. that's not just "being loud and standing up for himself" - it's not something good that would be taken from him, it's legitimate flaws that make things worse.
it's things he would've improved upon earlier if people didn't freaking continue hurting the god damn kid so when he does, it feels,, very nice! he's not even annoying to me. it's frustrating seeing someone hurt others and make things bad for himself and then insist that he's never done anything wrong ever, but it's not even annoying, it's just making me feel bad for both him and the people interacting with him.
i just,, i want him to get better, but the reason he can't heal isn't because everyone would be out to get him, or because c!dream is alive, or because the adults just want to hurt him. it's his own fault at this point because he's flawed as hell and he'll keep messing up for as long as he doesn't even put in enough effort to realize that.
i've never been in a fandom where positive character development was something people tried to guilt trip you out of liking, but hey, the dream smp has always had a lot of firsts.

Sorry to ramble in your asks but I've got c!Tommy brainrot currently and who better to spout it to but my favourite dsmp analyst on Tumblr!
I think it's interesting how there's very little discussion on how entirely dehumanising and demeaning the treatment c!Tommy has received throughout his time on the SMP
He's been seen as a hero but not as a person who happens to be a hero. I'm not sure how to put it but he had been constantly put up to this unreachable standard while also being put down by many people around him to the point that he's honestly, just willing to take it.
It's interesting how he's changed so little and yet so much at the same time. He's still a chaotic little shit. He's still Loud and brash and stubborn. But he's lost that spark that drew so many people in. He's lost that fire that spurred people on during the L'manburg wars and even after L'manburg blew up. He's not an empty husk, but he's definitely a lesser version of himself.
I think he's lost a bit of sight on who he is as a person, which is completely understandable in his circumstances. He's admitted he isn't who he wants to be but who's to say he knows who he wants to be. He's been held up to either a completely unreachable high standard of a hero or, he's been boiled down to being a child, a pawn, a toy. Someone who should be be taken seriously. A selfish asshole.
It shows with the conversation with foolish when he is asked if he thinks he's a good or bad person and he says that's up to foolish when, it isn't! He doesn't know if he's good or not and is leaving it up for other people to decide for him, something early c!tommy would NEVER stand for. The whole conversation with foolish sheds so much light on c!Tommy and his struggles with who he is now.
He's matured, but in the bad way, y'know? He's admirable for how willing he is to stand by the people he loves and trusts, despite any damage that could happen to him. He's not even self-sacrificial at this point, he's just being self-destructive. He's succumbing to c!wilburs manipulation because it's become harder for him to fight back against it all.
C!Tommy's story is definitely my favourite if you couldn't tell already djbsjnsjs
It's just really interesting to me and the communities response is half good and half I hope you never meet an actual trauma victim ever <3
Anyways, I don't want to have you read too much so yeah, sorry for rambling lmao, have a nice day! <3
Never apologize for rambling in my asks I always appreciate it!
Also, I don't know if I agree with describing Tommy as a "lesser version of himself". I don't think his trauma makes him lesser. He's definitely different of course, and A LOT of his behaviors are VERY worrying (he's still very obviously struggling with suicidal tendencies, self-worth issues, and, as you pointed out, he's selfless to a self-destructive degree). He is not in a healthy mindset at all, but honestly, it would be absurd to expect otherwise.
I do agree on the rest though. He's been treated in a lot of ways, but as a person wasn't one of them most of the time. As you said, Techno put him on the hero pedestal on the 16th, and there have been people (mostly Niki and Jack in part) that have been let down by the fact that Tommy was not a hero. That he didn't come to save them from their loneliness... ignoring that he was struggling himself.
Then there is the obvious with Dream seeing Tommy as a plaything and having that whole weird possessiveness of his (callback to the one scene where Tommy literally told him "you don't have me, we don't have each other" because boy does c!Dream not agree with that one!). And Tommy knows that that's how Dream sees him, he even said so to Foolish.
Then there is Techno again who sort of treated him as a weapon during their stay together. He very openly admitted that he had no respect for Tommy until he was violent enough and had no problem manipulating him by hiding his intentions to get him to do what he wanted.
We also have Wilbur now who mostly seems to see Tommy as sort of an extension of himself. Often wanting him by his side, disregarding all his boundaries and assuming that everything that he wants Tommy also wants.
But there are more minors ones as well! Like Tubbo stating that he saw him as a ghost of sorts when he came back from prison or Sam stating that he's the origin of all the prison-related problems for example.
c!Tommy constantly receives so many differing opinions on who he is or how "good" or "bad" he is and he never really had a moment where he was in a stable enough situation and had a functioning support system to figure out who he is. Every moment he's just thrown into another situation that will only inevitably lead to more trauma.
And, like, he's a very strong character. Despite everything he's been through he's still fundamentally good. He cares about people and things and he wants to be a better version of himself. He has morals and he actually recognizes that he's in the wrong at times and knows how to apologize and make amends. He is also still very empathetic even to people who have hurt him immensely (callback to both "how do you not hurt?" during the disc war finale and Tommy saying he didn't even want to put Dream through what he'd been through).
Generally, he really has a good heart and he's very resilient, but he's never put in a position where he is able to take a break and take care of himself and figure out who he is and what he wants. And a lot of his worst actions are due to him lashing out as a trauma response (which isn't an excuse, but it does mean that healing is what he needs) so probably those could be avoided if he had time to heal. It also doesn't help that everyone always has an excuse for not helping which is... sadly very true to real life from personal experience. Which just makes it worst.
I think that, at this point, he may be a bit lost. He knows that the 2 things he desperately wants are honesty and safety, but he's also unwilling to leave the situation he's in that doesn't allow either because of the mindset he developed + the manipulation.
It's just... he makes me so very sad...

Ah yes my favourite way some people try to make c!Philza a bad person:
Tumblr media
Like I love how they have to completely ignore anything good c!Philza had done and I'm not saying he was perfect by any means but he wasn't a bad person. Starting with the fact that c!Philza and c!Wilbur started in contact for most of the time and c!Wilbur was the one who stopped writing back. C!Philza's first reaction to this was to go and check on his son. It's important to remember c!Phil was in very stressful situation, something that definitely not help making good decisions and later he regrets his actions. They also ignore that he still was kind to Ghostbur. Also saying that c!Philza say that Ghostbur feels like an empty shell of his son wasn't really an insult, it was more of grief, seeing boy he raised no longer truly remember himself. Plus, correct me if I'm wrong, but he never said that in Ghostbur face. Those were his personal thoughts and he have right to have those.
Then we have the Doomsday part. So many people just ignore that c!Philza had his own reasons to join it and it wasn't really revenge, he saw what happened to his son and he saw c!Tubbo, someone who he saw as a peaceful person who wouldn't provoke conflict, not only going after his friend that stay away from them, letting L'Manberg do whatever but also punishing him for not wanting to sell out c!Techno. That was the reason why he believed that government is bad because it corrupt even the nicest people, that's why he join the Doomsday. It's important to remember that not only c!Phil had no idea what happened at exile but also that the moment c!Tommy changed the side in c!Philza's eyes he betrayed him as well. So yeah, no wonder c!Phil had no big problems with working with c!Dream to achieve his goal.
Then there is the Ghostbur wanting to revive Alivebur part. Let's start with the reason why he even ask for it. He believed that people need Alivebur, a leader something that Ghostbur just can't really be so he decided that it would be a good exchange. No matter if c!Phil agree to help or not, he was set on doing it anyway asking both c!Eret and c!Bbh for help already. C!Philza already missing his son as well as feel guilty obvious would agree to go along as well. And even then recreating his son last moment wasn't easy for him but he promised Ghostbur he will help.
And then the last part. The fact that they made it sound like that was c!Philza being bad father truly amazed me. Like it was a friendly banter at worst. C!Phil wanted c!Wilbur to make friends and he knew c!Ranboo enough to believe that it would be a good idea to make those two hang out. He treated Revivebur like a child? Maybe but let's be real he also acted like a child. A funny dad son moment.
Is c!Philza a perfect dad? No but no one is. Is he a good dad though? I would say yes. He cares for his son deeply and try his best even when he makes mistakes.
