but jaskier has no idea he just asked geralt out the night before. he has no idea why geralt's acting like this. jaskier thinks geralt's just being weird, and that his love is unrequited! so whenever geralt touches him a bit more than friendly, or says something a bit too loving, it just makes him ache and pull away.

Fruits Basket Manga Review , ch 110

The writer doesn’t need to rush to akito (antagonist) & give us quick background exposition & escalate her mentality to the exploding moment, simply cuz tohru (the protagonist) isn’t emotionally in her most vulnerable moment yet. Tohru’s issues will be presented deeper  with each pov chapter she’ll have. So what should the writer do now?

This is a connected plot, meaning the emotions belonging to the previous chapter are still lingering & needs to be dealt with. There is no stupid laughing & cooking or even dumber momentarily amnesia. Nope! There is this:

-The Art of Writing Slow-Burns: (Lingering Emotions:)

Last time kyo hugged tohru thro the sheets. sth he wouldn’t do if it weren’t for the heartbreaking moment of tohru’s tears & the reason behind them. Why wouldn he do it? cuz he believes he’s the reason of her pain & is setting his mind on leaving her & being imprisoned as a punishment. He  wouldn’t do it cuz he loves her but he did it cuz he loves her. why? cuz love is illogical. Kyo’s heart moved him effortlessly to embrace her & “ his tenderness covered her pain” as the writer put it at the end of ch109.

Last time tohru hugged kyo thro the sheets, sth she wouldn’t do if it weren’t for the comfort of his warmth enveloping her loneliness & providing safety & a home. A home can a person. Why wouldn she do it? cuz Tohru is someone who hides pain behind a smile, someone who thinks she’s ugly & unlovable cuz she’s grieving still after all this time. She’s thinks she’s a burden. But here she confessed to kyo unprompted or advised by anybody. He only asked a fleeting question. but tohru cant hide who she is friom him anymore. Still, he accepted her & tenderly held her thro the sheets & she threw her body at him, she initiated the hug.

The sheet hig is the biggest emotional moment between kyo/tohru yet. It altered how they feel for each other cuz in that moment tohru’s mask fell & kyo was the most honest with himself emotionally. That’s not sth you move from with the stupid ED song. They both try to carry out normally afterwards cuz they live together after all. The slightest touch brings..... sexual tension!!!  it was so bad poor yuki left the house running!!!!!!!!

The writer cleverly escalates the sexual tension as they awkwardly try to find a talking topic, then dissolves it a bit when kto asks if tohru wants to go out together & where, then escalates it when tohru suggests buying eggs cuz she’s awkward, then dissolves it when kyo grumpily agrees but this is just grocery shopping” not a fun going out”, the escalates it when tohru said she’s happy for just bring together with him regardless of the location & kyo looses it! sexual tension explodes!

The target of the slow-burn isn’t the characters... the target is the audience! the writer plays with their emotions & cleverly puts the audience in a place where they desperately want these two idiots together but still remember why they aren’t! that’s very important. Having the readers cheer for a romantic relationship includes the readers understanding the obstacles ahead & how big they are & still cheer. If the obstacles are meh~ the readers will find the couple unrealistic, if the obstacles are so big & the couples emotions aren't buildup properly, then the couple themselves will feel meh~. Glad kyoru survived such writing mistakes both manga & anime ( anime hurt their characters more than their relationship).

-Yuki wants to move on from the unofficial son third wheeling his mom & her man:

The writer jokes abt yuki admitting he felt as a son watching his mon & her bf. I love tha this joke becuz it cleverly addresses the following points:

it is cleverly weaved in with the kyoru incident from last chapter. Sth happen & yuki doesn't know what is & doesn't want to! Yuki represents the audience I talked abt in the slow-burn point above. He is us. He’ll cheer for them to be together & will be so frustrated when they can’t. It adds to yuki confronting kyo at the climax!!! You see in the anime kyo/yuki stopped interacting much in se03. Then tada~~ big fight when it’s a must! & can’t be escaped... Here we still have kyo/yuki moments despite each boy moving away from his issues being the fault of the other. Basically better writing.....

The writer cleverly used this to address that yuki still feels like tohru’s son sometimes despite being more independent now, which is natural as you cant switch ur feelings with a button. But also the writer doesnt stay in this moment long & use it to build the next moment.. yuki/Aya , yuki/machi & aya/mine.... sadly all there dynamics are shortened in the anime like kyoru’s.

-I don’t think yuki/Aya  moment suffered much from the cuts, the entire school parents meeting ep us enough to reconcile the brothers. Aya defended yuki that day & so did yuki. He completely accepted him & stood up to him in front of the mom.

- More aya/mine would’ve been good to see & I would’ve preferred it to yuki/motoko moments in the anime that served nothing. but aya/mine too are stand alone story. They’re the most alike couple in a healthy way. Aya is the guy who protected his woman the most. simply cuz he’s the snake. snakes are secretive. he kept her to himself, even from yuki!!! impressive.

- What I lament from the cut of this mini yuki adventure?

1- This: ( yuki’s facial expressions) This is sth the anime fears, either cuz (a) pretty yuki is 100% pretty all the time, so no expressiveness cuz it leads to showing eyebrows & hiding them under layers of hair is the A.B.C of pretty characters... (b) Yuki in the anime is a prince 98% of the time, except with kyo (they got rid of this in se03 & give them one honest/ugly moment together) & with kakeru (one tiny moment in se03 in match’’s focus ep & then quickly back to prince yuki!)..., ugh!!!!!! I hate how yuki is prince thro & thro in the anime!!that’s why they couldn’t get rid of any motoko content!!! he’s a prince there... heck! school girls float after him the graduation ceremony... what’s up with that!! lol.

2-. This: ( machi with the toy that tohru/kisa/kagura/momiji & kiro like! so cute!!! also, foreshadowing yuki’s future chosen extended family! (his bro & his wife), (yuki & his wife) & best friend/his brother in law! Also, yuki is so himself! no glitters, no bubbles & no pretending anger! <3

Side Notes:

The lovely @mizzraynelly​ made notice kto’s speech in ch109 abt not vising his mom’s grave! Even tho it’s such a minor line, it’s one of the biggest cuts that foreshadow the accumulation of kyo’s guilt towards his mom. Kyo’s thing is guilt towards ppl he loves & fear of hurting them, by keeping this feeling alive in readers’ minds, the writer is making sure that the climax will hurt like sharp knives cuz the readers are on the same wave liength as kyo!!! epic buildup consists of tiny subtle pieces!

 Luckily, kyoru as a ship felt so strong in both manga & anime despite the later cutting half of their moments. Why? cuz the chosen cuts didnt affects the romantic relationship...no... the cuts affects the characters’ own personal struggle... most precisely tohru. Kyo’s own character struggles had better luck in the anime despite the cuts, simply cuz (a) was drawn with very expressive emotions & the anime team lingered on them in his scenes. (b) His character design as a whole was very expressive, the anime team didnt give him constant wide eyes like tohru & didn’t fear expr4essivness will affect for his “beauty “ like yuki. (c) kyo was given one ep per season for his issues which altho not much but way better than tohru (d) most important: kyo’s issues are very universal & very relatable” feeling guilt, mistakes & choosing wrong. That’s sth we all do!!! Tohru’s thing is grieve: this is very personal & most ppl experience it differently. 

I love kyo’s oufit!!! we have a hint of this moment in se03, ep 10 when yuki was fighting kyo... but they made yuki see them shopping as opposed of him seeing them being sexually charged!

I’m so mad this kyoru moment is cut!!!!!! tohru as a woman with pending sexual emotions is so refreshing & underrated in the trope of “ girl saves guys”. Also, it contradicts the pure mom image that’s been suffocating her since se01 ep 1!!!!! oh now i know why it’s cut... That’s why! momma tohru is so pure for such things & only when it’s the last two eps, then will allow her to be a woman choosing to live away with her man by her own desire! Why the anime only allow things ti happen when there’s no escape!!! I’ve always felt tohru/kyo is the type of couple to be expressive emotionally & sexually with each other based on seeing that ALL of their romantic interaction involves body language & I’m so happy there’s a canon proof so early before the future glimpse in finale!!!!!! 

I liked the aya-story, but it felt like the typical “ lesson of the day” formula, so I didnt analyze it much, but I enjoyed the brotherly interaction so much!! It had a gold mine of yuki being himself & so nit a prince! Im so happy I saw it! <3.

THAT WAS SO CRAZY. or when katniss shoots the lady instead of president snow and then everyone just descends on him💀 i feel like there's a level of nuance and understanding that i just don't have so i say "woah! cool :)" i hope ur doing well too ily❤️❤️💗

Fruits Basket, SE02, Ep22

I was pleasantly surprised that this was one of the best balanced eps concerning tohru as of yet!! They touched upon her being mom-figure in the first half but proceeded to humanize her afterward, depicting her as normal girl!, frustrated, vulnerable & somewhat silently struggling. I was right in my prediction that the moment yuki lets go of mom-tohru image, the show will too!! I’m happy!! finally, No more angels in the sky. But only real tohru with flaws, ugliness & humanity.

-Yuki’s acceptance of past feelings & change towards new ones:

The show is aware that they’ve been using the fake love-triangle initially but it actually has an explanation within the story. Yuki is attracted to tohru, so much, but it isn’t romantic at all. his attempts in “correcting” how he perceived her didn’t set right with him & he felt weirded out more! The show brilliantly depicted these “flirty scenes” with a hint of uneasiness. Yuki’s lines/ moves felt cringey & artificial “do you like my act, princess”,”I’ll kidnap you”, being encouraged by Aya to compliment tohru as a boy should. The signs are all there except not in your face, & the writer deserves praise!! Yuki, being perceptive, was able to reach such conclusion, not only by looking into himself, but by also at looking how kyo interacted with her, differently from him. Kyo sees tohru as a woman & is attracted to her romantically & altho kyo’s words & interactions with tohru lacks princely smoothness & have a hint of awkwardness, it was natural, genuine & spontaneous. Kyo didn’t put on an act or forced himself to flirt or deliberately chose words to impress tohru. Yuki was able to notice tohru only looked romantically towards kyo. Yuki used all his observations to reach another conclusion abt himself too!!! What he wants in a relationship is sth similar to kyo/tohru!! Mutual & equal relationship. He won’t be satisfied by one-sidedly giving or taking.

-The Author’s brilliance in writing traumatic-based behavior ( Kyo/yuki’s best interaction!! ) :

-an anon cryptically warned me that I’ll be disappointed in kyo this ep cuz of a certain scene with yuki. After watching it, I can tell you without a doubt I’m not disappointed at all!! Rather I’m beyond satisfied that I’ve decided to trust the author. Ms. Takya is genius in depicting traumatic-based behavior! Any other writer, would write the scene less raw, yuki would still shine defeating his inner demos, but kyo would only grunt, or say sth mild. cuz the writer might fear that it might risk showing kyo as the stupid guy behind in his growth compared to the successful yuki ,or annoy the readers/viewers who are so eager for these boys to reach mutual ground. Only a great writer will be brave enough to write kyo as his trauma/ faulty copying mechanism logically dictates!

-We spent an entire season with yuki, saw him yell at kakeru’s insensitive hurtful remarks, cry knowing he was saved cuz a friend risked freeing him, it took a locked dark room, paint fumes, PTSD, tons of monologues before yuki finally let it all out! & you want such brilliant writer to make kyo turn around & be nice to yuki all of a sudden after episodes of fights & no perspective insight? You bet such amazing writer will give kyo’s perspective its time & his development the logical progress he needs. This writer is all abt logical & realistic progression! whether positive or even negative, the characters will come across human, raw, realistic & real during & after their journey.

- Going through kyo/yuki’s dialogue, it will tell you that furuba is NOT abt friendship saving the day, or abt successful growth. It is abt the journey these traumatized children are undergoing now that they are nearly becoming young adults. Yuki’s journey was amazing not cuz he succeeded (as amazingly as this is) but cuz it made sense from his perspective, was realistic, logical, matched his coping mechanism & character traits & it took the needed time. Now for kyo, all his reactions should match his perspective, & make sense giving his coping mechanism. He wasn’t given time yet. so, he won’t grow much yet. “Making a fool of me?” kyo didn’t see yuki’s perspective abt the hat. he thinks yuki did it on purpose to taunt him.That HE saved tohru while kyo fails as always. “Praised by others, needed by them” Kyo like everybody in school, always thought yuki is a prince, loved, & admired. Kyo is not the audience, he didn’t see yuki’s struggle.”surpass me easily while I struggle” kyo may train for years with tears & blood, but the rat will beat him always cuz he is superiors. “an idiot that never gets anything, wants an idiotic impossible thing” “if only I gave birth to the rat, I’d ve been happier” kyo’s mom wished or the impossible. So did kyo. He wished that he’d prove to her that he can be the rat’s equal. She shouldn't have died becuz of him. An impossible wish.

-I personally think that kyo’s journey will take a different path from yuki’s. Unlike yuki, kyo’s been accused & proved to harm others somehow, intentionally or unintentionally. Some not even in this world anymore. So there are things in kyo’s journey that can’t be fixed. Nothing will bring his mom or kyoko back to life. He can’t apologize to them. There is NO forgiveness here as kyoko said!. Hence, the writer will brilliantly make kyo fall so hard & reach rock bottom so bad before he stands up again!! It matches his personality too!! He’s a person who struggles in expressing himself verbally, gets overwhelmed with emotions, stubborn, hard on himself & fiery in nature. Moreover, due to his trauma, he harbors very low self-esteem & due to his guilt, he is drenched in self-loath.

-The addiction of destructive coping mechanism ( Writing Brilliancy):

Kyo has one of the most destructive coping mechanism in the show. Similarly to what his father did by illogically dumping all the blame of the mom’s suicide on 4 year old child, which resulted in hurting kyo, kyo adopted his dad’s ways & dumped it all on yuki. Illogical. wrong. but it works!! it numbs this tingling sense of guilt, it puts the voice that goes “ you’re unforgivable” temporarily to sleep. All the hate is on someone else. not me. I’m not a monster. does it work all the time? NO. cuz NO drug does! All drugs has this temporary effect, that unless you break away from, will end up destroying you. “don’t you want it that way? you wouldn’t want to have anyone to hate?“  I’m still confused if this is kyoko or his mom. It has kyoko’s hair, the words are very harsh. Kyoko from kyo’s perspective shifts between extremely kind & cruelly harsh! but regardless, the truth has been spoken. Kyo’s eyes are opened. He can’t force blind himself anymore. he does NOT hate yuki. he “ acts like hating yuki is sth you needs to do”, as shigure said! hating yuki is his way to escape from his destructive self-loath. He hasn’t been hating or fighting yuki for a long while, he tries now, one more fight, one more dose of the drug, let the pain go away! Nope. Yuki is not participating, yuki is in the light now. You are drenched in the darkness, as unforgivable as you are. Monster eyes & all. Kyo breaks the window to break away from the memory. from this point on, it escalates to rock bottom as the drug is no longer working & hating himself with no escape is all he’s left with.

-Protecting leading to hurting:

yuki brings kyo attention that while he’s been hard on himself & resisting change, he is hurting tohru. Sth kyo chose confinement in oder to NOT do. Kyo being distant from class activities “life” is his choice. Tohru suffering is a consequence to that choice. Kyo, once again, overwhelmed by tohru’s desire to include him in their activities “ life”. Helplessly & painfully looking at her & acknowledging yuki’s words. Kyo in one of his most vulnerable moments, matched only by true form hug scene, is desperate for a hug. Not only cuz he loves her, but cuz he needs her, cuz he’s so tried of himself, cuz she’s so endearingly stupid waiting for him all by herself when she could’ve easily caught him home!! Ugh! tohru! T_T. Except this time, kyo is aware of his surroundings, it’s school, no place for transformation. As kyo decides to change his position from hug to head rest, he stares so intently in her eyes. Embracing her with his presence. For a moment there I felt weird. Like I was intruding on a personal moment between two ppl. XD. This moment was this excellently weird mix of tenderly romantic, bittersweet cuz they cant be together hug, & sexually tensed! one of the most successful kyoru moment that truly depicted emotions visually without needing much dialogue!

Side Notes:

kyo/yuki interaction was their most honest, filter-free & raw moment! each said what he really felt. yuki’s directly telling kyo to complain to him, which kyo did. yuki urging kyo to see that punishing himself hurts tohru.

I appreciate that Yuki won’t tell tohru now, cuz it will ruin their progress towards a better balanced relationship. Tohru’s lid hasn’t even been touched, so she would be cautious interacting with him. But once she opens her lid, her self-worth increase & her desire to focus on herself more is ignited!, she’ll listen to him without taking his burden as hers. just like kakeru did. Equal friends.

I wanted to talk deeper abt machi & yuki, but didn’t want it to be overshadowed by kyo’s analysis. Next time for sure!

I love how the writer included the most spontaneous flirting moment between kyo & tohru right after yuki explained that he saw her non-romantically. The writer wants the comparison to be clear cutting ties to any love-triangle misunderstanding that might linger from previous scenes. Moreover, it showed yuki fully & genuinely accepting kyoru!!

I’ll never be over tohru acting like normal teenager & chasing kyo, trying to catch the script!!!! These small moments while having not much effect on the grand plot, help depict tohru with her own feisty style of stubbornness beyond the one-sided kind image we always see.

This ep has well-written & visually appealing scenes. Visual imagery were well-implemented in kyo/yuki scene & kyo/tohru last scene.

Thank you anime for drawing tohru older, pretty & more mature in the final scene. She looked like a woman in love & silently in pain. My baby is growing!

Why is kyoko holding the hat in KYO’s flashback!!!! she’s wearing the same white dress from yuki’s memory?? What the heck is the hat’s story?!!!

Fruits Basket 2019 ( ep,20 )

-Hiro is real. A typical pre-teen, rude, mean, & rebellious brat with endless smart arguments. Jealous & dealing with first love. I like him. he adds different view to the show. Unlike sohma’s so far, hero don’t like tohru. The show used him to address potential criticism towards tohru. I avoid talking abt fruits in real life & not following its blogs to avoid spoilers, but when I watched eps 1&2, I wrote judging her as a typical girl saves broken boys story. It’s not until I watched more eps & realized that tohru is full of issues & flaws herself & she has no healing powers. All she has is her kindness & emotionally intelligent words. Hiro called her on saving ppl & she showcased her talent. Tohru doesn't know abt Akito, cant protect kisa or make hiro strong. what she can do is boost his courage & lift his spirit. She picked up on his low self esteem & desire to protect kisa, she used his own words to help him.” I’m a child, I wanna be an adult”. She said admitting that makes you brave & you’ll grow up to be kisa’s prince. Hiro knows her words are just words, If he rejects them, they have no power, but her words truly hit a cord in his heart. He felt better, He can be kisa’s prince if he is willing to grow up maturely. That he’ll work on. So, Hiro still didnt fall for tohru & isnt healed by her. He just chose to believe in himself as her words encouraged him to do.

-Tohru’s "my mother just got kidnapped” &“ my mother is inside” are red flags.  Everybody plays along with her choice of words to make her feel better. In reality...we notice when ppl uses questionable words..but we tend to play along in order to give them space. Clearly tohru is not okay when it comes to her mother. The show continues to make her say more of these lines, but it’s still to be seen if it’ll be treated as a part of her character or an actual problem that needs to be addressed. Moreover, hiro noticed how much tohru can’t stand up for herself. The girl who pushed the feared Mr.Akito away from terrified yuki, couldn’t stand up to a preteen & retrieve her mother’s pic. I love this! It makes her so endearing & human.

-Shigure’s “out of the two of us, I’m not the one who’ll be sorry at the end” & “sickeningly immature” are chilling. His “ it is natural to get cowardly if the one you love get hurt becuz of you” speaks volumes. Yes! we tend to not care if we’re in danger but if it is befalling a loved one because of us...boy~ then it is a tragedy..we become paralyzed with fear, guilt & selfless love. exhibit A: hatori. Akito is scary..the show does not joke when it comes to him. He uses physical & mental abuse with the zodiacs. a child was beaten “down black & blue”..”took long time to heal”..How many ppl have seen their neighbor’s wife/kid with bruises? how many actually interfered? yup. Reality is harsh.

“He cant blame Akito” why? even Hatori didnt blame him for his eyes?

“ she’s just some mama’s girl” Hiro is one observant boy.

What on earth is momiji wearing?.... lol

Kyo was on full “protective boyfriend” mode.lol. This boy is so endearingly dense. jokes aside, kyo does notice things quickly with tohru & he is right, tohru can be frustrating sometimes. Tohru~ dont take orders from brats!

first love can be one of the episode’s themes. Hatori/kana’s a failed example. We have hiro/kisa as the future with pending result. I wonder... how many first love is there in this episode right in front of my eyes & i didn’t see it...Yuki/kyo/tohru/momiji/editor-san/crepe truck lady/shigure?..shigure struck me as a womanizer..lol.. this perv cant be satisfied with one woman!

Fruits Basket 2019 (ep,24) Part 1

 A monster? suicide? child’s verbal abuse? destructive rage? despair? emotional scene? tons of tears? questionable director choices?.. This 20min ep has it all!  Although this ep contain fictional creature & magic, it is one of the realest episodes in furuba, yet. 

 Kyo’s monster represent the psychological abuse of children in toxic families. Unlike kyo’s zodiac form, the cat, this monster is an alien creature that doesn’t resemble anything in nature (inducing fear), it is misshapen, deformed, reeks of rotten smell (inducing disgust), dangerously powerful (life-threatening). A child is repeatedly told that he has committed the biggest sin there is. Murder. “you killed your mother”, or “you are the reason she died”  He’s been told that by many ppl, including the person who symbolized safety & trust (his father). It is so disgusting yet real & common when adults talk bad/gossip about children within a close distance. children take words literally & hold them in their hearts for a life time! Kyo screams “It is not my fault!”, but adults say so, whose faults is it then? “the rat!” Why? “he’s the one who tricked the cat”. Who is the rat? Yuki. A child is trying to rationalize the injustice & stupid accusations of the adults. 

“I’ll kill yuki, then kill myself, you would be happy if I die, won’t you?” This is the most tragic sentence in furuba, yet. More tragic cuz it is uttered by a child. A child believes since I’m a killer, then I’ll fix the problem, I’ll kill the source of pain, the rat, yuki, Tragic. I’ll kill myself. So tragic. You’d be happy, father. Extremely tragic. knowing your parent would be happy if you died. Kyo’s mom killed herself, it is her choice, regardless of the hidden reasons or her mental state, he’s told that Your parent chose death over you. How horrible are you that your mother chose death over you. You turn into a literal monster. No doubt the kyo’s mom loved him, but it is so tragic that she herself abused her child unintentionally. by sheltering, locking, hiding him away from the world. Kyo’s monologue is a real depiction of children’s ability to see fake-ness in adults. I love you,son, continues to lock him, I’m not afraid, continue to check his beads, I’m proud of you, no one should see you. No wonder kyo has no trust in ppl.

Kyo harming tohru is a real depiction of his broken mental & emotional state. look at Yuki/Kisa, their response to abuse is to withdraw, hurt themselves by avoiding life, they are like destructive water, has to fill the inside first before it spills. Kyo’s response is rage, it is like fire, spreads outside & inside at once. There is conflicting feelings inside him that drives him crazy, He denies strongly that he killed his mom, but feels tremendous guilt she’s not alive becuz he’s monster. He says there is no hope for him, yet continues to live with tohru wishing she never discovers his true form, says he’ll kill yuki, yet he never grabs a knife & do it. He is fighting his abuse but doesn’t know how. Moreover, I love that tohru approaching kyo in such state of rage is not a safe choice. Realistically, try to approach an angry father/friend, they’ll hurt you in their rage, They are not in a state that make them make a good judgment. I have a feeling kyo might’ve hurt himself as well. He lost his trust in kazuma & thinks tohru is safer away from him, he would definitely hurt himself had tohru didn’t “save” him.

How did tohru save kyo? she didn’t. Did she tell him he’s not a monster or that it’ll be okay or you’re a good person? NO. She didn’t even talk about him! she talked about herself, her desire, “let’s go home”..” I want us to live , worry & study together” screw the sohma’s & all the pain, lets go home! “I’ll listen if you complain” why? cuz you did that to me! she’s implying you are needed without saying it out loud! “I’m scared of you” honesty, No fake-ness, no shallow words with contradictory actions. So, kyo hugs tohru intentionally & this is big coming from kyo!! The guy who flinches whenever someone touches him, hates to show weakness & vulnerability, wants to be strong & doesn’t allow himself to cry. Cries in front of tohru, hugs her, puts his hand through her hair, & calls her name..... This is a huge step!! he completely accepts tohru. She knew it, she felt it & her tears expressed it.

Kyo’s monologue is directed to the viewers. “this is how you melt the ugly feelings” with kindness, honesty & sincerity.  Kyo is not healed, yet. he can still transform into a monster, meaning the abuse is still affecting him strongly. but he is giving hope & someone to trust.  kyo’s last words are painful cuz they show how low he thinks of himself “ how is it that someone like you stay by me & cry for me”.. he still has a long way.

kyo’s ” i dont have right, it is a mistake” that tohru is by him, why?

Kyo said “tohru” with no honorifics. When is yuki’s turn? Cant wait!

I have a strong criticism abt the director’s choices, but will write it in a separate post. hint: “shallow waters”......sigh~

I’m convinced now that if there’s romantic love, it is kyo & tohru. This ep & the previous one is purely about them showcasing their vulnerability exclusively to each other. tohru’s weakness is only seen by kyo & kyo’s tears are only seen by tohru. There is an equal showcase of need & support between them.

If yuki/tohru is going to be presented as a possible romantic love, then, the show must convince me strongly & equally. yuki has shared his weakness with tohru, but tohru is yet to share with yuki.

If the show wants to go the love triangle road with one of the boys ending up as unrequited love, then it can be either one of them depending on what tragic drama will happen.

The beauty & the beast theme is strong. Tohru tamed the monster with sincerity & kindness. Such beautiful strength within weakness! ugh!! Tohru is my all time fave female character!

Fruits Basket,Se03, Ep 9 (part 2)

This ep hits the feels simply cuz  we’re finally in tohru’s head! It shows tohru’s skill of reaching ppl’s hearts, not jst within furuba’s world but the viewers as well. However, while the emotion buttons were hit with tears, outbursts, suspense with the knife & cliff looming all over akito/tohru scenes, then tohru’s fall, fear of her death, another surge of emotions when kyo finally kissed her after their tragic encounter last ep, sth is still missing. For me personally, while the feels were 100%, the writing wasn’t.

-Minor writing Issues with akito/tohru’s “ face off leading to connecting moment”:

The akito/tohru scenes were more designed for the audience feel tohru’s pain more than for akito to connect with tohru. We were in tohru’s head more than listening to these two girls talk. That’s why the emotions hit us & we cried cuz we were listening to tohru’s heartbreaking monologue abt leaving her mom & hear her fear of being lonely without her mom. The heartbreaking visuals were all in tohru’s head. Akito didn't hear or see that. What akito heard was few sentences. Perhaps it is due to not having enough time to cover deeper dialogue between the girls, but akito was supposed to change her entire character, feels, demeanor, with one short dialogue. Tohru was talking to herself most of the time akito was facing her, the actual dialogue between the two was so short & touched upon their similarities briefly. Off course, akito slapping tohru multiple times was needed to indicate that “ look we know akito wont be won by tohru’s sincere words just like that on the spot, we’ll add slaps, multiple slaps to convey that it is logical that akito would refuse tohru’s words initially”. Unfortunately, once again furba uses violence to bridge gaps. tohru standing there weakly taking beating is such a bad taste that it bugs me that ppl are labeling it “ connecting”. I get that akito saw that tohru is after all similar to her & it led her to change, but it was done so quickly that we saw a peaceful, embarrassed, sincere smiling akito at the end of the ep. A new akito.

Furuba has this tendency to take long time building up dramatic character struggle & fix it in 5 or 8 minutes of the eps 20 min running time. The tools are: dramatic confrontation in a climactic style. Nothing is wrong with the tools themselves. They’re excellent story telling techniques, but the falling action is where the author’s skill at. Write drama & climax & raise the heart beat with suspense & emotions but the following consequences is what makes or breaks what you do. The ep needed to warp up akito’s realization for atonement so next eps will show her taking actual steps towards that. It also needed to wrap up kyo/tohru confrontation, so one of the two goals suffered on behalf of the other. kyo/tohru was established in the earlier ep, so it didnt suffer when it was wrapped, but akito/tohru is new thing brought in this ep only & was supposed to signal a new change! the villain getting redeemed. it worked in the emotions department, lots of ppl cried, but I felt it’s a bit weakly written. wished the girls “connected” by talking more before akito extended her hand. Oh well~ it is minor.

-Atonement vs forgiveness:

Akito is seeking atonement. Fixing her mistakes which means she’ll apologize to those whom she wronged & won’t repeat the horrible path of abuse. Atonement doesn't necessarily mean forgiveness. No one is obligated to forgive her just cuz she changed. Anyone who was bulled or abused understands how hard it is to accept the nightmarish past & move on, & look to see your bully/abuser doing well & has become a good person. It sucks to feel, “ oh so, I’m part of ur learning journey towards being a good person? Glad I could help in u realizing abusing ppl is bad, have a good time being good, me? I’m nursing my wounds & dealing with my nightmares that u caused, I’m doing way better now, but the wounds wont disappear”. Ppl might pressure you to forgive them cuz it’s the “ right thing” to do since it will help the abuser stay in the “ good” path. However, only YOU can choose how to respond. Only you can decide if forgiving them is helping u to cope or not. You dont even need to be part of their “ healing journey”. Focus on yourself  & live. Seek happiness & understand that sadness is part of the deal.

On the other side, if you were once a bully or an abuser, regardless of what made you choose such a path: an horrible trauma, being wronged yourself or simply not knowing better, you gotta understand that you might not be forgiven. It is ok if you weren’t. It is the other ppl’s right. Focus on yourself. Become a better person, work to fix the mistakes, ask forgiveness & be understanding of whatever response you might receive & move on. There is nothing else you can do. You cant spend your life waiting to hear the liberating words of “ i forgive you”. Those ppl you abused weren’t  liberated becuz of you for a long time, so it is understandable. Just focus on doing what you can to better yourself, atone, fix what can be fixed & live. Seek happiness & understand that sadness is part of the deal.

I like how akito embodies this themes of Atonement vs forgiveness, I just wish it was done with nice pace~ man! Now I’m really annoyed at the filler eps in se01 & 2! XD..-_-’’

-Again: don’t become the foolish traveler:

I cant say this enough. Tohru & kureno are the poster for kindness is an amazing virtue but don’t over do it.  You shouldn’t put yourself in danger & die like the foolish traveler. There is a reason both tohru & kureno are in the hospital & the author is doing a good job explaining that. Akito’s knife that deliberately went deep into kureno’s body, could have cut tohru by sheer panic & anxiety. Be kind but preserve yourself, too. Momiji said it. kind ppl exist & those who took advantage of them do exist as well. Still you can be kind. Reach out to ppl, but above all be kind to yourself<3

Side Notes:

I get that a yuki/kyo confrontation must happen to mirror tohru/akito. From enemies to buddies/friends/not enemies/ cool with each other. I just hope against all hopes that the drama is toned down a bit. But whom am I kidding? furuba has a history of running like a loose bull! >_<...fine! I’ll change my wish, I hope that kyo’s “ making a turn” from his tragic past & choosing better path is done better than akito’s, as in with “ enough time within furuba’s world, not necessarily multiple eps”.

Guessing who will forgive akito from the wronged zodiacs? I already know yuki, hatori & kureno had forgiven her. I want kisa to be spared from all this delima. Kyo’s entire trauma is abt seeking forgiveness, so I can see him forgiving her. I wouldn't be surprised if there were future kyo/akito encounters due to thoru befriending akito! would love to see that! As for Isuzu, the character who got the most severe abuse ( attempted murder) from akito, I can see her refusing this. Why should she care that akito is now “good”? From her perspective: screw akito! I saw death! nothing is wrong with such perspective from a helpless victim.

This ep is where akito & tohru’s Japanese VA shined the most, but kyo’s Japanese VA didnt have the right to steal their crown with his broken voice upon seeing near-dead tohru!! I wasnt even focused on him! but his voice stabbed me harsher than akito;s knife in kureno’s body! What a performance!!! It gave me chills! I’ve always said kyo’s English & Japanese VAs are good. but that moment, kyo’s Japanese VA delivered beyond comparison! well-done!

I’m still holding on shigure’s character analysis. Gotta wait for the bigger picture. but boy, he’s so grey.

The studio ditched akito’s lean boyish design & opted for a girlish design with lots of lashes, cute runs & girl stye of sitting on the bench. ok, cool. but I hoped akito stayed the same in her design even if she decided to acknowledge being a woman. Not all girls are feminine? they could've kept her the same. She spent i duno 20sth years walking & carrying herself a certain way, Now, tohru changed her, so even her style is different?

Also, It seems I need to give up on my pathetic conclusion that yuki will chang his “ akito-like” hair style! XD. That was a nice theory, ok?XD. I mean having a different hairstyle from ur abuser whom u spent ur childhood with is liberating! but I guess... anime is anime.. T_T. they can become grandparents & still same hair! lol !

Momiji is kind but he is NO foolish traveler. He didnt solely let go of his mom, sister, & tohru cuz he’s blindly kind nor cuz it is the best option for them. He considered & respected the other person’s emotions, desires & stance. He acknowledged & respected that his mom didn’t need him in her life, that his sister needs to grow a bit older before choosing to connect with her, that tohru isn’t a toy he & kyo fight for & he just give back to kyo cuz he’s a gentleman. No, tohru’s feelings matter & her choice is hers. He also didn’t blindly forgive akito nor brush her cruelty or quickly accept her. He stood up with judgemental looks, disapproving of her, waited to hear her sincere guilt, then approached her with wisdom & advice. Momiji is the best example of moderate kindness.
