Hee Hee Hoo Hoo just wrote some fucked up letters for my DnD campaign

[TRANSCRIPTS BELOW BREAK]

Playing an interesting take on Saltmarsh my group is affectionately calling Pirates and Parolees. Everyone in the party is a criminal out on parole except for me, a First Mate on the vessel that was supposed to give them job experience and serve as a sort of training while out on parole. We finished our first two prologue sessions (we are easing a lot of new players into DnD so we tried to take it slow) and ended with the ship being attacked by Umberlee cultists (our Quartermaster was a plant!) our captain and 7 other crew members died.

Now I am stuck in Saltmarsh with 5 parolees who's crimes range from identity theft to serial killing, my best friend (the captain) is dead, and I can't leave the Parolees without permission from the government.

For those that are familiar with my Edge of Midnight or Baldur's Gate 3 writing, or have heard me talk about my PC Wynleth Reiden, you may recognize some names on these. Wynleth is serving as an NPC in this campaign and as the main governmental contact for the characters. Her husband Zan Caimaris (who is usually dead when he is mentioned) was alive and the Captain on The Eliza Lee. He died in the Cultist Attack (or did he? *wiggles brow in Wynleth's backstory requires him to come back very sick, we'll see if my brother sticks to that though*)

My current PC, Asta Galhearth, was best friends with Zan and one of few that knew about Wynleth and Zan's relationship. He tried to save Zan from his watery grave but a Kraken got in the way of that. A kraken also killed the crew members he tried to save and then some. He's feeling really responsible about it so he resigns from the company. We'll see where this goes lmao.

Symond Larke Pride of the Gate Mercantile Seatower, Lower City, Baldur’s Gate To whom it may concern, I regret to inform you that the Eliza Lee has been lost, her cargo along with it. We were attacked off the shores of Saltmarsh, a mere quarter mile from our destination. We lost many crew to the attack, their names are listed below. Kharvas Gav -Rigger Concrete - Rigger Andor Den - Rigger Amya Den - Rigger Beacon Xath - Healer Mel Hallow - Cook Lilyore Zasebar - Cook Zan Caimaris - Captain Attached are letters written to their kin. Please dispense to their families along with their final pay. I hope it brings them some closure. Please also take this as my formal resignation from the company. I have failed my crew, my captain, and the Eliza Lee. I am no longer fit to command a crew or a vessel. I ask that you dispense my final pay to my wife as I do not know if I shall return from this journey. I have also enclosed a letter for her. The Parolees under Zan and I’s care have survived. My darling wife, The ship was attacked. Zan didn’t make it. The surviving crew is stranded in Saltmarsh. I don’t know when, or if, I will be able to return home, I have resigned from the company. You should have received this letter with my final pay. I wish it was more but I cannot bear to continue to call myself a sailor with the blood on my hands. I failed them. I failed Zan. I failed you. I hope you can forgive me. I will try to write soon with updates on my journey home. Despite my exit from the company, I am still responsible for the parolees under my charge. The road ahead seems long and arduous, I long for nothing more than to feel your embrace. Pray for me, it seems I have incurred the Bitch Queen’s wrath. I will hurry along as fast as I can. Wynleth Reiden Ambassador of Baldur’s Gate The High Hall, Temple District, Upper City, Baldur’s Gate Madam Ambassador, I regret to inform you that the Eliza Lee has been lost. We have lost a substantial amount of our crew, including our captain, and all of our cargo. The company has been notified and the remaining crew allowed to make their way back to Baldur’s Gate however they see fit. I have chosen to resign from my position with the company but, in reviewing the documentation, cannot cede my responsibility of the parolees taken under Captain Caimaris and I’s charge. I am looking for further instruction. I was ordered to await something concerning the parolee’s when we arrived here in Saltmarsh. We have arrived, though through unforeseen circumstances. If you are aware of any solutions to our predicament, or any clauses that allow me to shed this responsibility into more capable hands, I would be much obliged. I am completely out of my depth here and, frankly, have been since we picked them up in Waterdeep. Anxiously awaiting your response, Asta Galhearth

Alright, to cap off my "Favorite and Least Favorite" series of questions for Pokemon S/V, let's do one for the Team Star admins (well, Bulbapedia calls them "Bosses", but tbh I don't really care lmao). Since there's only five of them, I think it makes sense to go through them from worst-to-best (or best-to-worst, whichever you prefer).

As you said 'five' I shall not mention my thoughts of Team Star's big boss. The short answer to THAT is 'meh'. I don't even know if anything in here can be counted as spoilers? But just in case TEAM STAR SPOILERS.

I don't hate any of these guys so we'll go least to most favorite. Getting my info on background from Bulbapedia since it's been a hot minute since I played and my brain can only retain information for SO LONG.

5. Eri. The big muscle of the group is a girl and is actually really sweet. The team mom. Pretty yawn. Coolest base location though. Props for that. Why's she bullied? Too great. People jealous. So tough! So good at pokemon! PRETTY LADY. If everyone liked her so much I fail to see how a few jealous mean girls could make any bullying towards her a big enough problem she'd be on the same level as the others.

4. Mela. Meh. Mehhhhh. Another female character in the group with a bully backstory that is amazingly stupid. Someone picked on her because they thought she acted and dressed too cute and got jealous. Hee hoo girls can only be bullied because others are jealous of them. Now she dresses like she fell into a paint bucket at hot topic. Couldn't stop laughing at her goose step walking animation though. If she had an actual shirt of some kind I'd actually like her outfit a lot.

3. Ortega. Okay Bulbapedia has absolutely nothing on this guy's backstory. I'm gonna assume he got bullied because he's clearly a rich baby. Precious rich baby fairy boy I love him and will protect the child WITH MY LIFE. Now if only I could fix that weird ass bowl cut over mostly shaved rest of the hairline thing. Is that a popular look now or something? If it is, kids goddamn I do not want to be cool.

2. Atticus. Bulbapedia's no help here either but dang son if this kid was not bullied because he LARPs like he's gonna die if he doesn't I'd be surprised. Kid is pretty but even I want to gently put him inside a locker and close the door. If he got bullied because he supposedly decended from ninjas and that's somehow weird for him to act and dress like this then ATTENTION DUMBASS CHILDREN OF PALDEA I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE YOU TO KOGA AND HIS DAUGHTER

1.Giacomo. How do I pronounce this name? I've been calling him Guac-omo this whole time. Anyways. The Dark type boss of Scarlet/Violet! Yet another favorite. 10/10 in my school days I would have watched him quietly from a distance like the introverted shy girl I am. This poor fool got bullied because he got to be Class President and made a bunch of hilariously stupid strict rules so they tossed him out and replaced him with Nemona. It's okay Guacboy. I still like you better than female Ash Ketchum over there. NO NEMONA I WAS NOT MAKING EYE CONTACT TO BATTLE PLEASE GO FAR AWAY FROM ME YOU NUT JOB. Also I have no idea what exactly is going on with Giacomo's hair but I like it. Also his name is basically from pinapple. In every language. Hee hoo pineapple boy~

I love Team Star. I would 100% have joined them because I too was bullied as all heck. ...And not just because I would have tried to get near Giacomo. No, no. ...Kinda. Damnit. I'm gonna be making an OC because of this later aren't I. Oh well. ONE MORE ONTO THE PILE!

HEE HEE HOO HOO EPISODE 3 YAY AN EPISODE I REALLY ENJOYED

very happy the show picked up by episode 3 or else i might have dropped it. (actually maybe not -- it's a show with half hour episodes, and it was watchable enough, so i probably would have continued watching even if i wouldn't have been able to say i LIKE it)

thing is, this has very nearly confirmed what i said in my other review posts on this show, that exposition is important. just the brief exchange between Vex and Percy at the beginning (something like "Bad dream?" "Is there any other kind?") got me interested and invested; the most important scenes to draw in viewers and get them to care about characters -- as a general rule, not just for this show -- seem to be the quieter and slow ones

edit: ep 4! 'nother good episode. still some weird inconsistencies, like the "no more secrets, okay?" bit, yet it was earlier established that no one really knows each other's backstories. i really think this show would be a lot stronger if we had an extra one or two episodes before the main story so we could get to know at least some of the characters

#rat rambles #her 3 werebeast forms are a werecat werebat and a wereghost #yes wereghost I said what I said #her gimic with that is that each of her forms are based off of different supernatural beings (witch vampire and well. ghost.) #he werecat form is very distructive and tosses different magic orbs around to fuck shit up #her werebat form is her combat form being able to either do quick bites for more damage or long bites for less but she gets a sippy #and her wereghost form can travel anywhere and puts a haunt effect on anything she passes over #the weremeter is fueled by distruction drinking blood and haunting things respectively #with her werebeast forms being more powerful she has less going on outside of those and also a negative damage modifier as a human #this is to account for two of them being quite capable of damaging things (albiet less reliably with the werecat) and her werebat form just #generally being much more effective at combat than the weremoose #same sanity drain effect in her werebeast forms but higher base sanity but also lower health as human #which is more relevant due to her items to willingly transform costing health to use #and she still has the food and sleep issues #oh and the werebat form is kind of wyvern like but she cant fly cause shes too heavy rip #I also imagine she has decreased sanity loss from mobs and such due to her experiences with mosters and beasts and such #similar with magical stuff thatd usually drain your sanity #Im not sure if shed also be able to eat monster meat to activate a random form or not since itd kind of clash against her food issues? #maybe it just like hurts her more or smth #Ive also been thinking abt role swap wurt kit and I think I might make her design based off treeguards? #but yeah her kit is less based off of being normal plants friends and more abt being monster plants friends #so like tree guards and fleshy bulbs #she can also grow evil flowers Im thinking #to balance all this out shell Only eat rot and manure and stuff like that #oh and also charcoal #basically stuff that is ready to return to the earth already #she eventually can make different types of compost from fresh food tho so thats a work around #all of it can be used on herself but some of it is more so made for other things #such as growing a tree up into a loyal tree guard or pacifying already existing tree guards (given you arent the reason they spawned) #oh and pacifying fleshy bulbs

his name is Vash'ka Frostfire (he/they bc I project my pronouns onto all my ocs), but he prefers to just go by Vash. he's a mage first, thief second. that's VERY important to them. but also they're honestly just a mage for the aesthetic bhjfk not 100% for that reason as they do genuinely enjoy being a mage. but he's very particular. he only ever uses frost magic with his right hand and fire magic with his left hand. because his right eye is blue and his left eye is orange lmao

he was raised by his Khajiit parents and traveled around with them, his older brother and other members of his caravan. they primarily traveled around Elsweyr, occasionally popping over to Valenwood. uuuntil he was about 8-10 years old (not decided lol) when a group of bandits ambushed his caravan. the bandits kill everyone else, but decide to let him live. but they gave him his mouth scars and snaggletooth to remember them by.

obviously, the poor kid is terrified and very traumatized. he just runs off, eventually finding himself in Valenwood. he ends up running into a Bosmer family, who take one look at his cute lil floofy face and immediately take him in. due to the trauma, they can only remember their first name, they have No idea what their last name was. so the family gives him the name Frostfire because of his eyes and because even at that age, he was already pretty capable with fire and frost magic

so yadda yadda, he's then raised by this family, but once he gets to be about 22, he finally decides that he wants to go and find those bandits, and kill them. bc revenge, y'know? and so he goes and heads off to find them. he stays in Cyrodiil for about a year before moving on up to Skyrim. and this is where canon kinda starts. they're caught at the border and though they tried to explain they weren't trying to cross illegally, yeah, nobody cared. so they willingly went with them, hoping it would get them a lighter sentence. it's important to note here that Quyance has the exact opening as part of his backstory. Vash was right behind his cart, so they never met (they meet later but y'know), but Vash definitely saw him. when Alduin decided to go commit arson in Helgen, Vash just Ran. guy literally climbed the wall, even though his hands were still bound lmao. absolute mad lad.

hee hoo that last paragraph was huge oops so that mostly brings us to current times. he ends up building a cottage on a mountain near Dawnstar bc people are racist and he didn't feel like dealing with them. he joined the college and thieves guild and yee B)

Gir = Prospit, Knight of Heart

Never thought I’d see the day when I’d have to classpect GIR of all people. Or, dogs. Or, robots. Anyhow, GIR being a Knight of Heart...kinda works. After all, what the IZ universe mostly lacks is optimism, heart, and overall that kinda positive stuff--which is what Gir brings to the table, along with Minimoose. I’m smart.

Minimoose = Derspit, Witch of Space

I AM CLASSPECTING A FLOATING PURPLE MOOSE. Oh my absolute god. Anyway, I couldn’t decide on a lunar sway for Minimoose, so I just went with Derspit because yes. Anyway, as we can see in ETF, Minimoose CLEARLY has space-manipulating powers. He teleported an ENTIRE PLANET, for god’s sake. He uses it mostly to the advantage of others, but he mostly benefits from it indirectly because Zim is an idiot, so I made him a Witch. For all we know, Minimoose could be god-tier already and noone would bat an eye.

Dib = Derse, Seer of Void

Pretty much any paranormal investigator character could be a Seer of Void, not gonna lie. They're just like that, ya know. Anyway, a sense of wanting to understand the unseen, the unknown, and even the nonexistant is a TOTAL Dib move. Like holy shit that fits way too much.

Gaz = Derse, Rogue of Rage

Gaz. Gaz sweetie. You can’t just hoard all that rage. You gotta leave some for another poor bastard--shit she’s already gone. Fuck. Anyway, I feel like Gaz being Ragebound is...kind of a given. I mean, she already canonically saves up and hoards a bunch of Rage and unleashes it on some other poor utterly fucked soul, so this works. Trust me.

Membrane = Derse, Heir of Space

Okay just hear me out here. He’s well-versed in creation, he does it mostly for the benefit of others, AND he’s pretty space-oriented in the first place. Seriously, everything about the man just SCREAMS Heir of Space. Look me in the eye and tell me I’m wrong. See, you can’t. Checkmate.

Almighty Tallests = Prince(s) of Hope

Welp, the Tallests are Eridan kinnies, who knew. Also YES they share a classpect, they're practically identical, gimme a break. Anyway, the reason I chose Prince of Hope rather than Prince of Space was 1: we already have way too many space players so we dont need two more. And 2: they already destroy hope by being galactic monarchs and conquering planets--plus, they destroy WITH hope by being naive to the consequences of their actions, as seen in ETF. Also, they're MONARCHS, so of course they're princes. Hee hoo I'm smart.

Tak: Derse, Mage of Doom

Yo holy shit, Tak is a Sollux kinnie. ...I need to make a shitpost of that now. Anyway, the reason I made Tak a Doombound mage is because she has CLEARLY, canonically, fought against Doom throughout her backstory (failing the exams and being banished for god knows how long, only to return and fall to Zim after carefully constructing a plan, etc.) and, since Zim is a Doombound Bard, that would make her defeat as his hands a way of her suffering Doom, therefore further securing her Magehood. She could have god-tiered after getting thrown into the sun, for all we know.

(EDIT: I FUCKING FORGOT THE BONUS CHARACTERS SO HERE YA GO:)

Chammy Wamboo = Prospit, Knight of Blood

Okay not gonna lie this one's a big brain move. See, Chammy's one of those shippers, focused on interpersonal relationships, right? Lil Meulin kinnie. So of course, she'd be Bloodbound. Since that's what the IZ universe lacks, then she's a Knight attempting to defend it and bring it to the table. (she shares a classpect with KARKAT OF ALL PEOPLE. WHAT THE FUCK)

Keef = Prospit, Thief of Blood

Yeah Keef being a Hero of Blood is kind of a given anyway. Poor boy, he doesn't MEAN to steal Blood per se, but he ends up doing it anyway because he just wants human connection. Tragic, but still annoying. RIP.

Zib = Derspit, Mage of Rage

Not to toot my own horn, but THIS ONE IS FUCKING BIG BRAIN. See, since Zib's backstory is heavily ambiguous, this one was a challenge. BUT, Zib has been shown to be fighting (and losing) against his own Rage in the form of his Zim half, and eventually suffers the consequences of his Rage by failing and being deserted in the Void. I considered Void for him due to the aforementioned reason, but I think Rage works better.

Pilot Dib = Derse, Thief of Beans Time

Now, this one is less big-brain, but it still works. Since Pilot Dib is suspended in IZ canon, and is widely regarded as the most feral character in that suspended canon, as well as being the most memorable character in the pilot itself, he basically has a monopoly over the entire time he spends on-screen. So, he basically stole the pilot's runtime and became the ULTIMATE DIB. Good for him, good for him.

Concept Dib = Derse, Seer of Mind

Hee hee, Concept Dib is a Terezi kinnie. Anyway, since Concept Dib is basically just Dib if he was Dexter, I feel like he'd be very Mind-oriented. And, being a scientist, he'd be dedicated to understanding his mind, so of course he'd be a Seer.

Triangle has all the brain cells and has to try to convince him to take actual missions rather than scrounge for cache's of glimmer

Has a shoebox filled with old pictures of him and his brother and family from when they were alive. It also has a soccer trophy from when Rust played soccer as a child.

Exo Warlock Rust-19 Ghost name: Saki Pronouns: He/him

Much more serious than Kobalt. Finds him to be kind of annoying

jailbroke his system so he could install anime gacha games onto himself.

Remembers nothing of his old life.

Actually surprisingly buff for a warlock. Could have been a titan.

Backstory: Kobalt and Rust were brothers that died in a carcrash during the golden age. They were turned into exos by their grieving parents. Kobalt has a few memories of their life and remembers their brother, Rust. Rust remembers nothing of his previous life to the point that he does not know that he and Kobalt are actual brothers. Kobalt insists that he refers to Rust as his brother. Rust just thinks that this is just a weird annoying thing that Kobalt does. Kobalt refuses to show Rust any of the photos of them in their past life or reveal that they are actually brothers for fear that it may cause him to glitch and need to be reset, thus making him lose his memories again.

Human Titan Liam Ghost Name: Sweetie/SweetHeart Pronouns: she/they

Liam was alive during the pre-golden age.

Their ghost managed to find a way into a buried mausoleum and resurrected them from their grave.

This is SUPER weird considering most guardians are from the golden age.

Liam doesn't remember their past but seems to remember what the pre-golden age was like. This mostly manifests as general confusion about what the absolute fuck is going on and have NO IDEA how anything works.

Before the events of the first game, Mumbo wasn’t the best guy. Morally or alignment speaking. In fact, far from a full-fledged good guy at this point. More bad than he was good. Imagine a sideline villain that would let pride and mischief get the best of him. Not important enough to part of the main story at this point, but still a dangerous nuisance. Probably the kind of guy that would transform people into something humiliating because they looked at him the wrong way or threw an insult at him.

Let’s just say Grunty’s betrayal was a big fat wake up call for him. At first, Mumbo really didn’t put all that much thought into the consequences of letting Grunty dip into dark magic. It was something he felt very familiar with at the time. How else would Grunty come to know about these things? Sure, it could have been something she snuck her way into, but that’s what many would like to believe. That’s what Mumbo would like many to believe as well. He never took any time to think about the bad things he’s doing, using this kind of magic until he saw what Grunty became because of his teaching.

In fact, if it weren’t for the good influence Banjo and Kazooie gave Mumbo, he could’ve just turned back to his evil ways after getting his revenge on Grunty. He wasn’t really expecting to have a change of heart during all of this, but that’s what he got.  He’s not all perfect, but he’s gone through some serious improvement.

Despite the improvement, however, these tidbits of his backstory aren’t something he likes telling people about. Mumbo doesn’t speak of this to anyone. Not even to people as close as the bear and bird themselves. He’d rather give off the impression that he was just a mere victim of Grunty’s shenanigans rather than the reason Grunty is the way she is today. He hasn’t even spilled it out to anyone that he was her previous teacher. This and his past, antagonistic nature are a whole closet of skeletons the guy is not ready for people to find. He feels like there would be a lot of trust between his companions on the line.

How strictly do you follow canon?  — there isnt much canon to go off of i think? the album barely even states if ziggy is an alien and b*wie himself got really wishy washy about it (sometimes saying z is a human who was contacted by aliens, he was an alien himself, etc). i dont think we know anything about him besides what he looks like (red hair / weird eyes / pale / “well hung” lmao) and he has a band called the spiders from mars, he plays the guitar left handed, he’s bisexual + androgynous, and he’s charming and popular with the teens but inevitably is a victim of his own ego. and he dies.  that too.  but that’s literally it! we know Nothing else about him.  so i filled in all the gaps because my brain has worms.  theres a little bit of the story that verges on fantasy (that he’s some sort of messiah messenger for “the infinites,” whatever the fuck THAT means, david) so i nix that because i prefer hard scifi.  and theres one BIG part that i just ... deleted out of his canon, in that the world is ending in 5 years in his timeline, and he’s like ... aware of this ?  but that’s dumb and confusing.  i legit dont care anymore. my OC now.

Aka try to list everything, which makes your muse interesting in your opinion to make them spicy for your mutuals.  —  im so embarrassed i know i could be genuine and actually try but i have brain blockajjolajlakala33lak33klak333ak3jka3akjj323j3 i guess it’s like ... ziggy is truly the ultimate expression OF humanity because he reveals everything both wrong and right about the human condition, he literally embodies the best of humanity and the worst at the same time, he’s a really interesting critique on the idea of genuineness/earnestness vs commercalism in art, the perils of fame, and also how humans are so inherently corrupting?  a lot of thematic stuff i like exploring is like what is innate to humans vs what is learned behavior, what are things that humans do naturally that ziggy mimics out of his desire to be like us?  i think he has a really good story arc -- he went from being a literal nameless CLONE in a society full of pragmatic forward thinking science-oriented people to a sell out rockstar celebrity in a society of people that value individualism and self expression and art, but in the process completely lost his mind and himself and gave into the worst that humanity has to offer like rampant selfishness, drug abuse, self destructive tendencies, etc. characters changing is always interesting and ziggy truly changes for the worse -- but he is never just black and white, he was never good and then suddenly evil, he just was always the same person putting on different facades and trying to be himself by constructing an identity that maybe was who he wanted to be versus who he actually is.  i dont know what im talking about. hes just an alien trying to be too hard to be human in all the wrong ways.   i just like how “gray” ziggy is. he isnt good or bad, he can be very nice and he can be very mean, he’s overtly showboating confident but at the same time deeply afflicted with self-consciousness (why tf else would anyone be So obsessed with how they present themselves?).  hes an icon of individualism but also commercialism.  he’s freakishly alien but is almost more human than humans themselves.  he struggles as lot in his head -- which makes for interesting writing, i guess !!  Im so emabrrased im not going to go back and read what i wrote so if i typoed dont look at me

Now the OPPOSITE, list everything why your muse could not be so interesting (even if you may not agree, what does the fandom perhaps think?).  —  i think ziggy comes across as really mean and nothing else.  his horrible bitchy rudeness comes across as hee hee hoo hoo sassy isnt he a rascal when it’s supposed to be more like ... he’s so far gone into the celebrity delusion he’s conflated aggressive rudeness with charmingness because no one told him otherwise and everyone worships him to the point where he’s just given into the delusion that he can do no wrong.  i think theres the general simplification problem that happens with a lot of fictional characters, it’s easy to see him as just a whacky sassy glittery quirky rockstar when i guess it avoids the inherent tragedy of like ... everything else about him. his totally fake and false sense of identity built up from superficial things like fame and labels and stardom.  maybe my version of ziggy is just too weirdly depressing and sad when i know his original iteration wasn’t quite so ... grim.  im not very sure tbh.  

What inspired you to rp your muse?  —  hmmm ... a lot of things! i just really got into b*wie stuff in early 2019, i’ve ALWAYS loved aliens and sci-fi, and i was really shocked that db sets up such great visual storytelling potential but does it through music.  i just really liked ziggys “story” and i like any chance to think about aliens so i just got invested into piecing together a little backstory for him using, like, the cumulative knowledge of literally every other piece of science fiction ive ever consumed in my life.  this was summer 2019 when i was making initial pitches for my thesis film, and so i just randomly decided to pitch “animated version of ziggy stardust” as one of the potential ideas.  shockingly everyone liked it a lot and so did my professor who thought it was really cool, and then i just ended up sticking with the character and working on him for an entire year.  ziggy became my hobby but also my homework.  he was such a fun character because everything about him was interesting to me and i had just enough source material to have a starting point but so much room to take him in any direction i wanted to.

What keeps your inspiration going?  —  honestly, yooooou guyssssss. i have some really amazing fwends that ive met thru here .... and some of our dumb stupid stories have literally become NOVEL length. it just self generates inspiration because you realize the limitless amount of stories you could tell with this one single character when your character enters his story or he enters their story and etc. etc.  ive drawn endless amounts of comics and stuff for him ... ziggy is just so endlessly interesting ...   cringe be cringed bro but recently (i know this sounds dumb bear with me or die.) ive kind of realized a lot of how i rp z comes as some metaphor for the experience of being an asian immigrant/being asian in the US -- his home “culture” is a lot stricter than the rampant selfish individualism of the usa (he only lives in the uk and usa, so he thinks the whole planet is like this), he’s dissuaded from standing out from his community and his selfishness becomes a community burden rather than a personal flaw, and when he does come to earth, he goes through such awful culture shock, literally nothing makes sense to him and everything is Different.  and while some things are different in a Nice way, something things are different in an Awful way, and he’s given the option between losing his true personal identity as an atominan and giving it up to be a human.  the allure of being a human is a little too much but losing yourself like this is traumatic, in a way.  obvs like ... a little silly and definitely not something that i actively intended to put into his story arc, its just something that fell into place cuz i guess i worked so closely with my own personal experiences and feelings of “alienation” (pun intended) to try to understand how he would feel being a literal alien an shid. its cathartic to write about him. but he also has a lot of my own personal interests just thrown in -- 70s fashion, scifi, science, tryhard implications about human nature, art history, whatever dumb nonsense i get into

An Annotated Mass Effect Playthrough, Part Seven

Wherein we... talk to the crew. I didn’t quite make it off the ship.

Still, a lot of words.

Aka the nearly All-Gif update.

Didn’t get a chance to play ME at all this week, so I’m going to spend a few hours this weekend (double-checking to make sure screenshotting works :p) and have some real updates later.

So making it back to the ship from Therum, it’s time to talk to the crew.  I maybe could have gone and talked to them after getting on the ship after the Citadel, but they don’t really have any unique lines then so, I usually wait til now to go chat.

First, let’s talk to Liara.

The thing that sucks about talking to Liara (or Kaidan, or Ashley, if you don’t want to romance them) is, you know, the accidental romance.  Making “picking the Paragon-place choices = romance by default with NO WARNING” design was very Not Good.  They fixed this in later games, well moreso in Dragon Age games than ME, (and Andromeda is done very well for this) but still.  In ME3, the BackOff mod does a great job of making romance dialog more obvious and intentional.  

Liara’s dialog choices I feel like are even LESS obviously flirting I feel like than Ash and Kaidan’s.  Honestly with Liara’s most of the lines can be read and even said aloud as friendship then BOOM, all of a sudden she wants a threesome.  I choose middle dialog options whenever possible with Liara just to avoid this.  I’m not interested, never have been, don’t want Kaidan to think he has any competition.  But seriously, it’s poor game design here that you literally have to be a jerk to a companion at some points to avoid having them think you want to bang.   God, half of the reason I’d love a remaster would be to hopefully fix shit like this to avoid some of the pitfalls.  

I hate that some people use this as a reason to dislike these characters more.  And I’ll admit, in my early days as a ME fan, I held it against Liara, too, until I realized how dumb that is.  I especially hate it when you get to the “confrontation scene” and people use Kaidan not wanting to be in a threesome as a reason to dislike him more?  It’s not a bad thing to want to be monogamous?  (And of course, it’s not a bad thing to NOT want to be, assuming everyone is open and OK about it.)

I just prefer to not get that scene at all now, and to avoid “leading anyone on” accidentally etc.  My Shepard knows early on what she wants, and sticks with him all the way through.

I was going to talk more here about my feelings about Liara in general but uh, I guess I’ll do that later.  This is already really long.

So anyway, I thought maybe I’d talk here a little bit about Why Kaidan?

I will point out here that I am mostly a hetero woman, so my choices in video game romances lean towards men first, though I’m also very cool with doing non-m/f romances in games, and often do on subsequent playthroughs of games I love, but that’s almost never gonna be my primary romance.

I’d already mentioned my love for Carth Onasi, one of the most hated companions in video games, If You’re A Guy.

By today’s standards, even the Carth romance isn’t that great.  But at the time, it was the greatest romance I’d experienced in video games.  There were a few others that were really good -- Valen Shadowbreath in Neverwinter Nights: Horde of the Underdark was the other really great one, but we also got nightmare fuel like Anomen in Baldur’s Gate (though that gets better with mods + the final BG expansion) or just under-written characters or romances like Casavir in NWN2 (who was much better with mods) or hell, either of your choices in KotOR2 imho.  But I used to play KotOR over and over for many reasons, such as holy shit a Star Wars game(!!) and one where you can actually be a female main character AND has that great Bioware storytelling... but a big reason was Carth.  

A funny thing about Carth Onasi... if you play a male main character, you have a very different experience with Carth than if you play a woman.  And even I can agree that hoo boy Carth gets tiresome quick if you play a male, as a female you at least get to flirt and that calms him down and evens him out a lot. But the one time I tried playing as a male, I didn’t make it off Taris because.. yeouch I could actually see what the guys playing were so mad about.

But hey, that voice.  Raphael Sbarge, I love that voice.  So like I said early on in these posts, I immediately knew I was going to romance Kaidan the very second I confirmed he was romancable, before I even ran back into the ship and met anyone on the crew aside from Joker and Kaidan.

And... that only got confirmed more and more as I went through ME for the first time.  The character is smart, and capable, and respected you, and never questioned your command, but made his feelings pretty clear along the way.  He could be a little doofy but in an adorable way with some of the things he said, honestly there was almost never anything I didn’t love about this character.

I realized some time ago that I have a thing for the Paladin archetype personally. 

This is Casavir, from Neverwinter Nights 2, and in NWN2, there are two romance options for women.  An under-written Lawful Good Paladin in his late 30′s who is willing to buck his superiors to do what he thinks is right but also places you on a pedestal and holds back all his emotions.  He’s a romance option. Or....

Bishop, a chaotic evil ranger who insults you a lot, threatens to rape an NPC under your protection, and ultimately betrays you.  

Most people who played NWN2 seemed to prefer the CE Ranger.  I loved the paladin so much I wrote fix-it fic that I never have gotten around to publishing anywhere to retcon his terrible dumb ending.

There’s a fan-made romance mod that helps with the romances in this game, though I dislike a lot of what they did, ultimately I always use it.

In Dragon Age?

Ah yeah, the Templar-Warden.  Love him.  He does have that “Oh I’m so young and experienced tee-hee” thing going on that isn’t my favorite, (at this point mostly because I’m actually in my mid-40′s so uh, I’m just Old) but otherwise, yeah, love Alistair.

Dragon Age 2, I mean I usually romance Anders but... I’m not real excited about either him or Fenris, or even either of the ladies, though I have done Isabella’s romance (as well as Fenris’) and enjoyed it.  I’d probably romance Avaline (or Varric!), if she were an option.  But yeah, Anders mostly because he IS trying to do what’s right, even if he... well.  You know.  

But Dragon Age Inquisition?

Give me that Blackwall-angst.  That stoic guy trying to be a Warden who comes undone for you.  You’d think I’d go for Cullen, but hey this game gave us two paladin archetypes, though one is merely pretending, he still atones and becomes what he was trying to be, one way or another, if you let him.  I picked this paladin archtype first because I did not like Cullen based on interactions with him in DA1 & 2.  I like him well enough in DA:I but Blackwall is my guy here.

Out of all the many, many companions in SWTOR, who’s my fave?

If Aric Jorgan isn’t a Paladin-type I don’t know who is, especially since any romanceable Jedi are uh, all your female padawans (don’t get me started) until Lana (also female) comes along. 

Hell, in a very long-running 4e D&D game I played from around 2009 to 2014 where my character fell in love with our party leader’s son, married him and fought the final boss 4 months pregnant with our twins.  That character’s husband... was a paladin.  I mean look at this art my friend picked out for his character’s son:

I mean dang, who (of those who are attracted to men of this type) wouldn’t?

I always pick the Paladin.  The guy who is gonna Do What’s Right no matter what it costs him, the guy who’s gonna be loyal, the guy who may bottle up his emotions or keep them under control all the time but ultimately does what it takes to get the girl... that’s my fave.  And that’s Kaidan.

I will also say my second fave archetype is rogue-with-a-heart-of-gold, and that’s more of a Garrus or Varric (if only he were a choice!!! :( ) type.. aka my second choice in these games.

Well that was a lot more words on that subject than I meant to do, so I’m going to just say real quick here that what I love about this first conversation with Kaidan is that he’s already no dummy, he knows something is up, and warns you about it.

We’ll save talk about his backstory for another day.

Let’s head downstairs.

Yay for sped-up elevators!  What used to take like 20 seconds now takes like, four.

URDNOT WREX.

This another place where Shepard starts out just sticking their foot in their mouths completely.  I feel like this is something the game definitely has problems with here.  Shepard should know a lot more about the Genophage, like they should have about say, Spectres, even if the player doesn’t. So basically every response you can give to Wrex about the genophage and what his people are going through sounds really insensitive.  Comparing the relatively minor First Contact War with the entire galaxy more or less uniting to keep the Krogan from taking over after the Rachni war seems pretty dumb, and also like something Shepard should already know.

Loredumping on the Krogans a bunch with Wrex is necessary, but  I think it could have been done better.  Though I think there are a lot of questions about the Krogan and the Genophage that ultimately are important but go unanswered. I’m going to be honest, because generally I want my companions to be happy and ultimately I want the happiest ending I can get, I usually cure the genophage and leave Wrex in charge.  But also I don’t think that ends up with the happiest ending for the galaxy.  Everything about the genophage is terrible, how it works, how it was administered, what it’s done to the Krogan as a people, but let’s be honest, the galaxy will also be in huge trouble just from a resources perspective if each krogan woman can have hundreds (or even just dozens) of babies a year, who are gonna all live a thousand years.  There’s got to be a compromise that, eventually, hopefully Wrex works out if he’s alive at the end of ME3 or the council figures out with Wreav or whoever.  

It is kinda funny though that here, I basically met Wrex at C-Sec, told him I’d help him with Fist, sent him to my ship, and basically just kidnapped him to go help with the rest of the mission.  He wanted to be here, right?  I can only assume I’m paying him a lot.

Ashley!

I do love Ashley Williams.

I’m not going to turn this into a “Is Ashley Racist” thinkpiece.  I’ve read a lot of both sides of this argument and no, I don’t think she is.  Some pieces of her attitude do need to be kicked up a bit, for sure.  She’s got about the same issues with aliens as most of the species of the galaxy have with each other, which sometimes isn’t great, but she’s far from supporting Terra Firma.

She’s smart, she’s funny, a hell of a shot, she’s being held back due to her family name.  I would love for if someday a Wilshenko OT3 were possible.  I’d do that in an instant.  I despise the fact that you can only keep Kaidan forever if you lose Ashley forever, though I don’t see that changing even in a remaster.  Please Bioware, for the super ultra remaster?

I know I need to do another run through the game with Ashley alive. I don’t remember too much of what happens in ME3 when she’s there.

I also love that her story is so much one of family.  From her stories of her sisters, to the point that it’s her own grandfather’s legacy that’s holding her back.  She’s so grounded, she reminds us that there are civilians out there we’re keeping safe, a whole world we rarely see, up in space and in the middle of so much military conflict.

GARRUS.

First of all, whew Garrus looks amazing in the lighting and with the textures with ALOT/MEUITM.  Very handsome.

Interestingly, Garrus does not really loredump on the turians.  We absorb a lot of what we find out about the turians more naturally.  Garrus is more all about C-Sec and the general politics of the Council, of Spectres, of C-Sec.  Gonna be honest, I expected C-sec to play into the game as a whole a lot more than it did based on Garrus’ talks about it.  I mean it was always there, but Bailey ends up being the face of C-Sec 

Garrus’ Law vs. I Do What I Want attitude is a nice way to do a non-goody-two-shoes companion story without having to go evil.  I love that Garrus’ story kinda mirrors our own as players, how are we going to get things done?  Shove a blaster in people’s faces, accept collateral damage, and do whatever it takes to get it done?  OR play by the rules, compromise, and see if that fixes things.

The thing is though, Mass Effect actually is great at giving us the illusion of choice without making a huge difference in the end.  Like I mentioned before... not bringing Garrus to ME1 makes little difference in how he acts in ME2 outside of a few lines of dialog.  Lots of things are like that, like pick Ash or Kaidan on Virmire, and yes one is always gone, but 80% of the content is basically the same from there on out for either character.

There are games out now that do that choice better.  Pathfinder: Kingmaker is one I can think of.  Or Tyranny.  Things you choose can alter the endings of those games drastically, locking entire paths out of the game.  

I used to think that was what I wanted.  Until I played Kingmaker and locked myself out of things I really wanted without realizing it.  I stopped playing the game, sad that my LI dumped me and wouldn’t come back without reloading many, many hours worth of game.  Despite enjoying the game overall, I still haven’t gone back.  When I do play again, I’ll probably keep a lot of tabs open of walkthroughs and tips on how to keep things going how I want.  Kind of defeating the purpose of the game.

Anyway, I got super off track again.  The point is, Garrus is the companion that gives us the most Choice in who he is.  Which is cool.  He illustrates our Paragon vs Renegade dilemma.  And it’s neat that it does make changes in some of the things he says in the future, but overall, his story doesn’t change much no matter what you do (Unless you, ya know, get him killed in ME2).

And therein lies a problem with Mass Effect, and video games as a whole.  It’s neat to see the little changes, but it’s rare for anything to be an actual Big Change, because... that’s a loooot of work for a developer and how much more money is all that going to cost him.

At some point in the future I’ll point out how lucky we are for what we did get, though.

Heeeey it’s Chief Engineer Greg Adams!  I wonder how many people don’t even know he has a first name?  Anyway, thank you for your one short conversation in which you explain how the Normandy works (honestly, great job with explaining this, Bioware, even if the science is ???) and like three sentences on who you are.  Wasted opportunity to give you an actual character.  Glad you like Tali, though!  See you in ME3.

TALI!

Okay, I will totally accept that Shepard doesn’t know much past the basics of quarian society.  That makes a lot more sense than Shepards not knowing much about asari.  

The quarians are so much more of an original creation I feel like than a lot of what we’ve seen in the galaxy so far.  Krogan?  Basically Klingons.  Turians?  Space Romans. Asari?  Twilek/Space Elves but ALL Hot Ladies.  Qarians feel like something new though.

I mean, I guess before they had to live in suits they were pretty normal, but their entire culture doesn’t feel like something we’ve seen everyplace before.  I mean I’ve seen space (g-slur)  but, eh not really.  

And Tali herself is such a good character.  I mean, she does suffer a little from being Very Important with her father being one of five admirals in a population of six million people but, I’ll allow it.  Nobody else on the crew has Very Important Parents.  I mean Garrus’ father is a little high up in the ranks but that’s a non-factor, Ash’s grandfather was but he’s dead and never seen, Wrex’s father is a chieftan but none of those is central to their current story or as big as this one. I mean, Spacer Shep’s own mother is a captain of a ship.  Tali herself in-game isn’t that sexualized -- most of that was the fandom’s doing.  She’s young but also confident and has her shit together.  

She shoulda been a same-sex romance in ME2/3 though, damnit!

Joker. Is. Amazing. And uh, also shoulda been a romance option. 

Hey first of all, how great was it that they put in disabled representation in this game.  I have read a few posts on how it could have been better, and definitely agree, but it’s also been so important to have say, Geordi LaForge as chief engineer of the Enterprise and also Joker here, in space, being awesome on spaceships.  And he really earns his the right to his bravado in calling himself the best pilot in the galaxy.  

Also?  Casting Seth Green was such a great choice.  I couldn’t imagine Joker as anyone else.  I mean this is Bioware so we expect, and definitely got, great voice acting (except for... ugh you know, we’ll get there in ME3) but honestly Seth Green was a particularly good choice.  I don’t care that he’s covered with sixteen layers of plot armor, he deserves it.

He’s the companion that we don’t ever get to take in the squad.  (I mean, except for that brief amazing moment in ME2)

I only wish in ME1 he had as much to say as in ME2/3.  At least he gets cool snarky lines after all the major missions.

One last thing before we get off the ship for awhile, I love that the crew is actually comprised of both men AND women in ME1.  With different hairstyles and faces, and even skin tones.  It’s nice to see they didn’t just reuse the same guy over and over for the nameless NPCs.  

Well, I guess they get names in ME2. :v

Anyway, I would like to point out, that there are seventeen nameless NPCs on the Normandy.

Then there’s Adams, Tali, Garrus, Wrex, Ashley, Kaidan, Chakwas, Liara, Pressley, and Joker.

That’s twenty-seven people and eight sleep pods.  Let’s remove the aliens, who couldn’t fit in a sleep pod (Garrus and Wrex), twenty-five people.  Are there people sleeping in the sleep pods now?  There must be, right?  Everyone can’t be awake when we’re on the ship just because we’re there?  How does that math add up?  Who is sleeping where, HOW DOES IT WORK!?  

Well, that’s their problem. I got my own bed.  Kaidan can share.

Also just... don’t get me started on how stupid this is.  I mean it’s nice having a shop on the ship but... the justification is terrible.  We all know it.  He was counted as one of the 17 nameless, btw.

Okay well, I was going to get off the ship this update but this is already stupid long and honestly I don’t have too much more content to post so, I’m gonna go actually play this game!

Orphen 2020 still looks pretty good ((Spoilers))!

((Hee Hoo dood, prinnyfrost reporting for duty! So...episode 13 of this remake aired earlier and considering how it looked, I’m willing to believe they ended the first season, which strike me as odd since the first season of the original anime was 10 episodes longer, but whatever. Now I think it’s a good time to give my thoughts about how I feel about everything thus far. Well, as you can tell from the title of the post, I like it, but just by how much though is the question here.

First, let’s go over the plot. I already mentioned part of this in one of my previous posts, but to sum up, Orphen leaves the Tower of Fang in order to find Azalie and years later, he meets Cleo, Majic, and others and eventually discovers that Azalie switched bodies with his former mentor, Childman Powderfield, using white magic. Orphen and Azalie duel, with Orphen winning and he tells her to beat it. It’s basically the same as how it was in the original manga, In the original anime; however Azalie didn’t switch bodies with Childman until much later on as she was being hunted down and looking for a way to turn back to normal. Not only that but after Orphen saved her, she pretty much went on a boat journey on her own, never to be heard from again since she wasn’t in the second season. Another difference is that most of the episodes in the original anime was Orphen and company traveling around and exploring different places as they were hunting down the Sword of Baltanders after Volcan and Dortin took it and looking for a way to help Azalie. In the remake, we only get a few episodes of them in a village worshiping the Deep Dragons and then we’re in the Tower of Fang for the remainder of the season. It’s likely we’re going to see other places later on, but it’s clear the original anime gave us more variety to see the world in one season in the remake. To be fair, as I said before, the original had more episodes in one season to work with and the remake is supposed to be more based on the original manga, so it does make some sense on why it turned out this way.

I also do appreciate them giving more of Orphen’s backstory in his class and showing us his bond with his former classmates, unlike in the original where it was mainly him, Childman, Azalie, and Hartia. They also showed more of Orphen’s skills with hand to hand combat as the students at the academy are also trained assassins (or at least some of them are). In the original anime I only recall one flashback where it’s brought up and it’s when Orphen was training with Azalie and she flipped him. My brother even pointed out that the remake did a better job than the original about how Orphen got his title as “stabber”.

I mean look at this shit. That’s not to say the original didn’t have good fight scenes in it, like Orphen’s battle with Hartia in the original show, but the remake did do a better job in exploring the hand to hand combat areas of the show. Heck someone could argue that they also did a better job at exploring the spells too. Not because of how they work but showing off the variety.

In one of the flashback episodes, Azalie was trying to see if she could use music to create spells, but end up destroying every instrument she used after failing.

I can’t be the only one who thought of Mar from the Orphen video game after hearing that, at least I hope not. Now that I think about it, Sephy also uses spells differently from other sorcerers too. Instead of voice magic, she using dancing. I’m not saying that Mar and Sephy would make it in the show later on, though that would be cool to see. I am willing to believe that the ways they used magic would be explored further later on in the remake.

Remember the “dragons” I mentioned before in a previous post? The ones that stole their powers from deities? I believe that each one represents a different version of how spells are used. The show has already shown that human sorcerers (the descendants of the Celestials) use voice magic and that deep dragons (like Cleo’s pet Leki) relies on sight. So it wouldn’t be unreasonable to believe that 2 of the other “dragons” shown here would have their powers based on sound and dance. It’s far too soon to theorize which ones would be the case (unless if Matpat proves me wrong or something), but I’m sure we’ll figure it out soon enough. Finally, let’s go over the characters.

I think Orphen himself is pretty much the same as before, a guy that comes off as an asshole, but is a pretty cool guy when you get to know him and don’t piss him off. My brother has mentioned that he’s less maniacal than before but I’m not too sure. I WILL say that it’s funny to hear his voice actor (David Matranga) say the names of the spells in the show despite him saying he refuses to do so in one of the outtakes of the original anime.

And pfft, you guys already know how I feel about the new Cleo compared to the original. In fact, I think this one makes more sense as the previous one was a selfish spoiled annoying brat, while this one loves having guests over to liven up the place and travels with Orphen not just to help but also she’s legitimately curious about the world and wants to see new people. The only downside is that her cooking still sucks and we haven’t gotten a chance to see her fight much yet, which is a shame since in the remake manga, we see her go toe to toe with Hartia. Hopefully this would be remedied in the future.

Majic I have mixed feelings for. In the original, he’s known for being pretty much a coward despite having talent as a sorcerer.

Basically the series’s version of Almaz from Disgaea. In the remake though, he’s much more confident in himself and it’s already shown that he could indeed surpass Orphen and maybe even Azalie at some point. On one hand, this is nice as we get to see him involved more and actually show his capabilities. On the other hand, I would’ve personally preferred that he started off as a coward and then slowly progress more and more has his skills improve, again, like Almaz. That’s just me though. I will admit, I do like his new outfit though.

Leki I also have mixed feelings about. While Cleo basically randomly finding Leki and taking him, thus getting involved with his parent and end up saving everyone is pretty much the same as before, this version of Leki isn’t really quite as expressive as before. I mean, he’s still cute and show’s his fondness for Cleo as shown in one of the episodes where Cleo was knocked out and he rubbed Orphen’s leg asking him to help her. Not to mention, he does have more of a variety of spells here unlike in the original where he basically blows stuff up on command like he’s Koromaru from Persona. But Leki in the original showed more reactions and expressions to the world around him, like the time he got lost after chasing a butterfly (at least I think it was a butterfly.).

Hartia barely got any screen time in this season aside for some flashbacks. He only appeared a few times when everyone was dealing with the Bloody August and then they just reported him as someone scouting the area. Seriously, we don’t even get to see him in his Black Tiger costume despite the remake Manga having it in the very first issue no less. Once again, hopefully this will be remedied in the future.

There’s also a few characters that weren’t introduced in the original anime like this woman here. She’s a member of the royal police department that’s hunting down Volcan and Dortin (who are wanted criminals). She tries to tranquilize them with darts, but ends up missing. I can’t help but wonder if she’ll be in future episodes hunting them down and trying to bring them to justice. Granted, Volcan and Dortin did go to jail until Hartia (Cleo in the manga) bail them out, but Volcan’s pretty much like Eddy from Ed Edd ‘n Eddy. He’s bound to come up with another scam at some point.

Then there are Orphen’s other classmates like Comicron (wait, isn’t that the name of Linkara’s ship?) who is shown to be more focused on making robots and other stuff than his spells, despite repeated failures resulting everyone to clean up afterwards. Even Orphen had to smash one of the robots with a bat before it could do any damage. Unfortunately he died within the first few episodes, so unless if he gets revived somehow, we’re only going to keep seeing him again in flashbacks. Also, raise your hand if you thought he was a girl at first by looking at him.

Forte was pretty much the loner of the class, often spending time doing his own studies instead of getting involved too much with the rest of the class. Considering he has his own class now in the Tower of Fang, and Majic is registered to be in his class once he starts attending (which I find interesting because last I checked, in the original anime, Majic was in Hartia’s class. I wonder how Eris is going to feel about that if they include her in the remake.), it makes me wonder if he was preparing to take over Childman’s class in secret in case something went wrong. He already knows Azalie’s secret as shown in the last episode, and judging by Orphen’s reaction to him knowing, Forte knew about it at least for a while.

Then there’s Leticia (or Tish for short) who, even though she wasn’t in the original anime (at least, I don’t think she was) I do recall appearing in the original manga. 

She grew up with Orphen and Azalie in the same orphanage and three of them developed a sibling bond together over the years, though unlike Orphen, Azalie and Leticia are related to each other by blood.

However, like the Squid Sisters from Splatoon, they’re actually cousins, which makes me wonder how their families end up dying or missing. Also, it’s kind of funny to me to picture Azalie as Callie, Leticia as Marie and Orphen as Agent 4.

Speaking of Azalie, I am curious on how they’re going to treat her in this version. In both the original anime and in the manga, she had an obsession for power, wanting to become a woman worthy of Childman’s recognition.

In the anime, this was because she actually fell in love with Childman and even confessed her feelings for him, but her turned her down because, well, she’s his student. Since then, she devoted herself to becoming more and more powerful, letting it corrupt her mind until the end of the first season.

In the manga, she was still trying to impress Childman and her obsession for power drove her insane, but whether or not it was because she loved him wasn’t exactly clear. Granted, I haven’t read all of the original manga, but I did hear that she was basically the antagonist of the series and had a “kill or be killed” mindset. 

In a way, you could pretty much consider her this series’s version of Vergil from Devil May Cry, a character willing to go all the way to become the strongest despite the means, while Orphen is trying to show her the errors of that, even if it means fighting her.

Now we have the remake version where her motives aren’t exactly clear yet. Even though she did use a killing doll (weapons designed to specially kill sorcerers) to make a young version of Orphen in order to test him (like she did in the original manga), she pointed out that it didn’t go as planned since the doll grew a mind of its own. In fact it looks like Azalie knew what happened with Childman was a mistake and is trying to make up for it, but she can’t let many people know the truth since Childman being missing is causing a power struggle in the Tower of Fang, like what happened in the Netherworld after Krichevskoy died.

In the preview of the next episode (or later on in the new season), Azalie is heading off to see if she can find out Childman’s true intentions, but what she plans to do after discovering it remains a mystery, so that’ll be interesting to see. All in all, pretty decent stuff so far and if it really is the end of the first season then, here’s to looking forward to the next season...whenever it comes out.))

Thelnus’s Pies

(Hee hoo, I just hinted at Divus’s backstory and disguised it as a story about Lilia and pie.)

Here’s that scenario I was talking about with Lilia trying to get Thelnus’s pie recipes.

Also, Thelnus’s accent is Dwarvish, which is a harsh and guttural dialect. Just thought I’d mention that if anyone had a hard time imagining what his accent sounded like.

Anytime Thelnus speaks in the Dwarvish language, I’ll have a footnote at the bottom translating it.

I don’t think it’s really as sad as I wanted to make it.

“Are you sure he’ll even want to share his recipes?” Kalim asked.

“He’s got to, Kalim! Those pies are my life blood!” Lilia cried, “What’ll I do once I graduate and I don’t have access to Thelnus’s pies anymore?!”

Kalim sighed. “He’s getting really old, Lilia. He may not even be able to explain it anymore.”

“Well, I need to at least try,” he said, grabbing his bag and making his way out the door. “If I get any recipes we can try them out later.”

Lilia knocked on the door of Thelnus’s little cabin excitedly. Surely the old dwarf could share at least one recipe.

Old Thelnus opened the door and barked out, “Fey weasel! Come to bother me on my Saturday, did ye?!”

“Oh, come on Thelnus. I’m not that mean,” Lilia said, batting his eyes innocently.

He huffed. “Then what’re ye here for, evil one?”

“I wanted to learn some of your pie recipes!”

Thelnus laughed heartily as if he’d just been told a marvelous joke. “I only share my pie recipes with the people I care about the most. Not even Crowley knows how t’ make a pie as fine as I!”

“Well then clearly you should share some recipes with me! I think we’ve really bonded over all those laughs we’ve shared!” Lilia said, referencing the many times he and Ace pulled small tricks on Thelnus.

“I was not laughin’, ye little devil!”

“What if I promise not to trick you anymore?”

Thelnus paused, then put his hand to his chin and mumbled thoughtfully. When he’d made up his mind, he nodded and grinned. “I haven’t given anyone my recipes in twelve years... But I could get my work done twice as fast if I didn’t have yer annoying little arse in my way.”

“So are you saying yes?”

“Yes, I am, delva*. We’ll start with apple pie. Go fetch me about eight apples from the tree out back.”

Two hours later, and the only progress made was that the apples were peeled. 

Twice now Thelnus had mixed up salt and sugar. He’d also forgotten where he put the cinnamon, and it took him a good fifteen minutes before he realized he was out and had to go to the school cafeteria to get more. 

And the biggest setback? “Berrig makes the pies with a type of sugar ye can only find in Dwarvish cities. It’s called Upherica and ye can’t make a Thelnus pie without Upherica!”

“Great! So where is it?”

“I sent Berrig out to get more. He should’a been back hours ago...”

“...You mean your husband?”

“Of course! I don’t know any other handsome gentlemen with the name Berrig!”

“But...” Lilia paused. How was he supposed to tell this old dwarf that his husband had been dead for forty-two years? He looked to the floor and pondered a thought for a moment. “Can you tell me about Berrig?”

Thelnus’s stony gaze softened and a warm smile spread over his face. He almost looked younger for a moment. “Ah, Berrig. I met ‘im at the bar where he was crackin’ jokes that nobody ever laughed at. I bought a pint and told the waitress t’ give it t’ the jokester at the other side of the room and tell ‘im it was from an admirer.

“We was afraid people would think ill of us, bein’ two men who loved each other... But no man or beast would dare t’ tell old Thelnus that his love was wrong.”

Lilia could have sat there for a long time listening to Thelnus talk about Berrig if Divus hadn’t waltzed in carrying a large brown bag labeled “Upherica.”

“Lilia?”

“Mr. Crewel???”

“Menthiv!** You brought my Upherica? What happened to Berrig?”

Divus sighed. “You don’t have to call me that.” He carefully placed the Upherica on the table. “Lilia, what are you doing here with Thelnus?”

“He’s teaching me how to make pies.”

The young teacher shook his head. “You shouldn’t have bothered him with this... Things like....” he gestured to the pie ingredients “Remind him of his husband. But if he’s okay with showing you his recipes, then I can teach you instead.”

“Wait, he taught you how to make the pies?”

“Taught ‘im everything he knows! Little second year came up t’ me cabin crying and I taught ‘im how to make the pies to cheer ‘im up.”

“Thelnus!”

“Oh, quit yer yappin’ boy! Ain’t no shame in a man cryin’! ‘Specially after what yer parents put ye through!”

Lilia looked at Divus curiously. His hand was on his forehead, and he was clearly trying to keep his composure. “Not in front of my student, please.” Quickly, he changed the subject, picking up the ingredients and putting them in a bag. “Let’s go to the cafeteria and I’ll show you how to make those pies.”

On their way out, Thelnus called after Divus is Dwarvish, “Hert menthiv athrid var thriknzdal knurlagin farthen dorzada knurlag?”***

Divus sighed and, to Lilia’s surprise, responded in perfect Dwarvish, “Narho dorzada jok, farth.”****

He didn’t really understand what he’d just heard, but he had a feeling Divus had a long history with Thelnus...

3rd Party...Xehanorts?((A crossover discussion))

((Greetings Hee Hoo Dood, Prinnyfrost reporting for duty! I wonder how many people are still excited that Kingdom Hearts 3 is finally coming out.

After so long of waiting, the 3rd main title in one of everyone’s favorite crossover gaming series is finally coming out! In the meantime, I decided to look over the trailers of the confirmed worlds.

Some I’m excited about,

others, not so much.

The one trailer that caught me the most off guard was the Winnie the Pooh trailer, and that’s for two reasons.

The first is the fact that, unlike previous entries, you’re going around and actually fighting heartless in them instead of playing mini-games. This is one thing that actually disappointed me. I loved the fact that not every world in the games has to be about combat. It shows that Sora is capable of helping others even when there aren’t any heartless or nobodies involved to mess things up.

It was one of the arguments I made as to why an Undertale world WOULD work if they ever bothered to include 3rd party worlds, as unlikely as that sounds; however that’s still not as jarring about the second thing they showed in that trailer.

Eeyore becomes a Xehanort!

Yup! Everyone’s favorite donkey with a constantly missing tail that needs more love gets taken over by Xehanort. This blew my mind because I thought Xehanort was only going after characters that originated from the Kingdom Hearts series like Riku and Roxas, but this clearly shows that he’s up for nabbing anyone in his grasp. So that got me thinking, “Who else might he target as he go through other worlds getting ready for the upcoming keyblade war against Sora and friends?”

Now like before, I’m only sticking to possible candidates on the off chance of third party involvement. While I haven’t seen any videos about people theorizing who might be next on Xehanort’s list of people to infect with his heart virus (pun not intended), I do like to stick outside the box from time to time. Plus, there’s also that chance where someone could make a crossover fanfic and could take notes from this. And remember, when I mean “3rd party” I mean strictly “3rd party”. As in anything owned by either Disney or Square won’t count for this.

Which might be for the best considering that if Thanos were to be controlled by Xehanort while holding the infinity gauntlet with all the stones, I’m pretty sure we’ll have more to worry about than losing just half the universe. I’m also not going by just the villain characters in each of the worlds either. Anyone, hero, villain, or neutral could be under Xehanort’s radar on where to spread his infection. Basically anyone from a series that pops up to mind. Now with that out of the way, let’s get started. First let’s begin with the easiest one I could come up with,

Flowey from Undertale. The reasoning for this should be pretty obvious. Flowey has no soul inside of him, and considering that souls in Undertale work pretty much the same way hearts do in Kingdom Hearts, he would be considered a Nobody, the husk of Asriel Dreemurr.

As Xemnas pointed out in Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance, nobodies are the easiest to take over since they’re born without hearts. While he did lie about nobodies never having one, he was telling the truth that they didn’t start out with one and it’ll take time for a new one to develop.

Xemnas: “A heart is never lost for good. There may have been variances in our dispositions, but a number of us unquestionably showed signs of a burgeoning replacement. Once born, the heart can also be nurtured. Our experiments with the heartless were attempts to control the mind and convince it to renounce its sense of self. But understand, one can banish the heart from the body, but the body will try to replace it the first chance it gets, for as many times as it takes.”

Asriel didn’t become whole again until he absorbs the souls of all the monsters in the underground as well as the 6 human souls Asgore obtained. So I’d say his best bet take over Asriel is to implant his soul into him while he’s still Flowey or wait until Flowey starts taking everyone’s soul from the underground, become one of the souls he takes without him realizing it, and become the dominant one.

Actually, now that I think about it, it’s actually pretty damn dark when you realize this means by doing this, Xehanort has pretty much taken the ENTIRE underground hostage just to make Asriel his vessel, leaving only Frisk and Chara (who’s resting inside of Frisk’s soul) remaining. Ugh...and I thought the genocide route was fucked up. Speaking of crazy people and broken hearts, let’s head over to another series I mentioned might work for Kingdom Hearts,

Orphen. Considering that this is an old show that not a lot of people are familiar with, let me give you a quick refresher.

Orphen is the tale of a talented sorcerer named Krylancelo Finradi (or “Orphen”), who left a school of magic in order to save his sister Azalie after she transformed into a dragon by stabbing herself in the chest with a magic sword.

And believe it or not, it’s that sister whose going to be targeted by Xehanort next. Why?

Well, Xehanort seems to be able to control those that show darkness seeping into their hearts as if it found cracks and begins to flow through them, like water leaking through a whole. That’s the case in how he controlled Aqua, Terra, and Riku.

I bring this up because in the anime, Azalie was very nice and sweet. While she was the #1 student in the Tower of Fang, she never let it go to her head.

That is until one day where she confessed her feelings to her teacher, Master Childman (yes, that IS his name), the person who brought her and Orphen in while they were out in the winter on their own.

Surprise, surprise, Childman rejected her proposal stating that he only considers her his student.

It’s at that point the drove Azalie more into her studies. She became obsessed with power, aiming to become strong enough to impress and possibly surpass Childman. Orphen even says it when bringing up their backstory in episode 8 of the anime.

Orphen: ”Sometimes I could see a different side of her. Something that frightened me. She was intense, almost fanatical about her studies. Her curiosity was insatiable. I tried to tell myself it was just ambition, but deep down, I knew it was something else. Something dangerous.”

This got to a point where she attempted to experiment with the forbidden Sword of Baltanders. While it wasn’t clear of what she was trying to do with it, considering she stabbed herself in the chest with it, I believe she was trying to turn herself into an all powerful sorceress, since the sword has the power to turn anyone it cuts to anything the user wishes.

It didn’t work... It also didn’t help that her former colleagues began hunting her down and tried to kill her, which drove her even more insane, so she starts killing people! Do you get what I’m trying to point out here? Her obsession for power, her lack of sanity, she’s a prime target for Xehanort! Darkness has definitely found its way into her heart and it’s growing stronger overtime. The only issue I can think of that Xehanort might have is the fact that Azalie is well adverse with white magic. This includes mind manipulation and soul transfer, so there’s a good chance she could be at least somewhat resistant to him.

In which case, I guess he would try to take advantage of that Gaia machine in the video game. Alright, let’s see what else we could come up with.

Hmm, while I do think Shantae could work as a possible world, I can’t really think of anyone that could become a Xehanort. Then again, I should get back to playing Shantae 3 soon.

Hmm...the only possible candidate I could think of is Satsuki, and even then, that’s a huge maybe.

Pretty sure they already have their own true Organization XIII.

Okay! Now we’re talking! Sengoku Basara! Granted, while I only played the 3rd game in the series and watched the movie “Last Party”, I’m pretty sure we have a perfect candidate to become another Xehanort puppet.

At first, I was thinking about Mitsunari, considering his grumpy attitude and carries a huge vengence against Ieyasu (or Masamune in the “Last Party” movie). Clearly someone like the Dark Prince himself would definitely be a Xehanort...that is until I recall one important detail that Ieyasu points out in Oichi’s story in Sengoku Basara 3.

Although it may not seem like it, Mitsunari has a balanced heart. He’s cruel, and cold, but loyal to a fault and isn’t afraid of his true self. Xehanort tends to struggle when it comes to dealing with people with more balanced hearts. That’s how Riku was able to break free from his control without the aid of Namine’s lock. So, that’s fine and dandy, but you know who doesn’t have a good balanced heart?

Oichi Oda! After the fall of the Oda clan, Oichi became mentally unstable. She wanders around to different areas without much of a clue and in different hands, she could be kind and helpful or a threat to anyone she comes to contact with.

It’s almost like if she herself became a heartless or nobody, like she loss her sense of self.

That is until Nobunaga comes back to life, realizes what she must do, and she sacrifices herself to save the world. So, Xehanort may want to act BEFORE that happens. Like Xemnas said, a heart doesn’t stay lost forever. Okay, this is starting to get long so, I’ll bring up just one more possible candidate. For this, let’s head over to one of my favorite franchises,

The Disgaea series. I’ll be honest with you, this was more difficult for me than I expected. I kept debating about who could be the ideal candidate to work with.

At first, I was thinking Etna around the time she loses her memories due to the fact that she discarded them after so much frustration in terms of Krichevskoy marring another woman, having a child with said woman, and dying by the hands of Tyrant Baal. Guess everyone has their drastic ways of handling rejection.

Then I thought about Fubuki, a guy obsessed with seeking vengence against the fake Zenon after the destruction of the clan, no matter what the means.

Then there’s Mao, whose heart became in flux for years due to Geoffry pushing him to become the strongest overlord just to he can have a good fight.

Finally, I thought of Void, a guy who literally let a dark heart take over his mind after being jealous of Killia and accidentally killing his sister. I thought any one of these people would be a prime target for Xehanort, that is until my friends on Amino convinced me about what could possibly be the perfect candidate out of everyone in the entire franchise...

Nemo from Disgaea 4. And if you’re thinking that I’m just saying that because his name means “No one” in latin, like Desco points out in the game, you’re not wrong. It IS a major reason considering that he’s literally discarding his sense of self just to be a nobody. Remember what Xemnas said! That’s what the experiments he did with the heartless were all about! Also, remember that Artina spent her time as an angel trying to get Nemo to let go of his hatred, but overtime, he stopped hearing her voice and stopped believing, as if Artina failed to nurture his heart to see the brighter side.

Hell, knowing that Xehanort can time travel, I would be surprised if in Kingdom Hearts continuity, he would go back in time to try to convince Nemo to give into the darkness just for that reason. Kind of like if he’s another voice in his head telling him to ignore Artina and seek vengeance against the humans and demons. I can picture him doing it now actually, getting Nemo to turn away while giving Artina a fiendish smile as they leave. That’s how evil Xehanort is! It makes too much sense. So, those are the possible 3rd party Xehanorts I could come up with. Anyone you can think of?))
