hit me with them hot homeschooling takes my good bro
my hot takes were NOT optional but i’m glad someone is brave enough to step up
hot take the first: due to basic math, my mom was able to give me and my little brother (2 children) DRASTICALLY more individual attention than any public school teacher (25-30 children) ever was. if we didn’t understand something she was able to commit the entire day to puzzling it out, because she didn’t have other classes or students to worry about. until i entered public school i never worried about ‘stupid questions’ or stressed about tests because she had the time to be there for me. there was no schedule to stifle us, either. i was never made to sit with a lesson i already knew, waiting for my classmates to finish the mandated work so we could MOVE ON ALREADY, and i was never rushed through something before i completely got it. in public school i begged to retake algebra because i didn’t understand it fully, and i was refused because i technically passed the class. with my mom, i would’ve retaken that course however many times it took, and stopped when i was comfortable with the material, not a second before
the second: that thing about lack of oversight allowing evangelistic parents to pick and choose creationist-friendly textbooks? it works in reverse, too. my mom was able to pick history textbooks that weren’t soul-stiflingly boring and jingoistic. when i started going to an underfunded public school in the deep south, i already had a more comprehensive knowledge of history than most of my classmates GRADUATED with. i learned about cherokee, sioux, and navajo history individually, while many of the kids in my town were learning that the civil war was about ‘states rights.’ and that’s just history! my science classes included walking around my neighborhood with my mom, making detailed, labelled diagrams of our local plants and learning about which ones were edible or toxic. my mom even did her best to teach me about classical music, which neither of us understood, but hey, public school didn’t bother to fund the arts at all!
the third: relating to my first point, i also had way more free time than any of my friends. WAY more. my school day was over in less than 4 hours. i never had to wake up before sunrise to catch a bus, i could eat while i did my work, i could go to the bathroom whenever i wanted, i could work outside if it was nice out, i could drag my feet and whine and bitch because ‘i dont WANNA do math today!’ and i would still be finished before my friends got home from school, and have the rest of the day to Be A Kid And Play
the fourth: as you may have noticed above, I Had Friends. i don’t know where this idea comes from that homeschooled kids are totally cloistered and deprived of all socialization? i mean, i’m sure SOME are, because they have shitty fundamentalist parents, but. i grew up in a neighborhood? where other children lived? and i played with them all the time. i had plenty friends. in FACT
the fifth: i had better socialization than you. yeah, this one is controversial, but hot fucking take: i don’t actually think it’s great for childrens social development to lock them into a system where their peers are almost exclusively within 1 year of their age, and every adult they come into contact with is an explicit authority figure.
as long as i can remember, i have been praised for my ability to talk to anyone. not so much now, because i’m an adult and other adults generally don’t expect me to defer to them like they used to, but when i was a kid? people were stunned at my ability to hold a conversation with a grownup, and equally impressed with my ability to interact with much younger children. before i went to public school, before my anxiety got bad, i had a drastically different view of adults as a social class, a view i wish i was able to preserve through that time. it’s hard to articulate now, because it’s not that i was under any misconceptions about the power they wielded over me, but... i considered them equals? in a way my public-schooled friends did not
NB4 ‘BUT THATS NOT THE CASE FOR EVERYONE’ yeah i know i know i know. i know my family is unusually privileged in that my mom was able to stay at home to teach us instead of working. what i’m saying isn’t ‘everyone should homeschool’ or even ‘everyone CAN homeschool,’ what i’m saying is ‘the format of homeschooling provides unique opportunities.’ some parents will abuse those opportunities, but that isn’t the formats fault. it’s the fault of the parents, and the nuclear family culture that treats children as the legal property of their parents, and those things should not be conflated

How to ACE the SATs
I have dealt with this test for so long and I know that at first this test seems like hell but when you really get familiarized with it, is actually freaking easy. The SAT maybe hard but the the ultimate tip is to be harder than it.
Reading Section
For the Reading Section, my first and most essential tip is that you are going to have to read the WHOLE passage. Yes I know it may be tempting to skim, but all this section wants from you is to test your close reading skills, so duh you are going to have to read closely.
Annotate. as. much.as. possible. This also goes with reading closely. You have to pay attention to every detail, (not memorizing though, the text is there for you to look at it back). Pay attention to the relationships between characters, to the characters attitudes,to the narrators attitude to each character, to the word choices, etc. This will help you to establish moods, tones and general themes of the passage.
Also in annotating develop your own code, like you may not want to write everything you are thinking of because it will waste time, but you understand yourself so you dont have to write every single word out. (?) do i make sense right now lol?
Remember, all the questions have evidential support somewhere in the passage, if it does not have support IT IS NOT THE CORRECT ANSWER.
Before you look at the answer choices make predictions.
Play positive and negative. If the tone is positive eliminate negative answers.
Play too broad, too narrow.
Ask yourself why would the author write that. And better, ask yourself what was the examiner thinking when creating the questions, you may be able to know why an answer is wrong.
With unfamiliar words check lines below and above to understand it. Look for the words surrounding it.
Look out for extreme answers. (always, never, universally)
Make sure all parts of your answer are true.
Although vocab isnt tested in the new sat, knowing some sat common words will not hurt. you can check them in quizlet or magoosh.
Read a lot. Read 18th century books, new york times, nat geo articles, etc. Just read a lot. and remember read closely.
Something I figured out is that the questions are there to make you understand the passage a bit more. What this means is that usually in a passage, all the questions in it will make sense to each other and will make sense to the passage as a whole.
Writing section
For the grammar section, you will have to learn all the rules of grammar there is no other way to it ( it kinda works like math)
You will also have vocab questions, so again check some vocab.
Read closely again, you will have to pay attention to every comma and every verb to figure out the text meaning and its style.
Think of what the question is testing you. ( e.g: subject-verb agreement, modifiers, punctuation)
Pay attention to the style of the text. See if it was written in first or third person, if it is formal or informal, etc.
Read the sentence you just modified in your head and check out if it sounds okay,
Sounds kinda logical, but read the whole option. Sometimes it happened to me that I didnt read all the option and just cause the first part sounded right I chose it. LOST POINTS. FOR NOTHING.
Math Section
For math you have to be smarter than the SAT itself. Dont get stuck in a question. Try to figure it out in any way you can. Maybe it is backsolving ( using the options to figure out the answer), maybe it is plugging in random numbers (this works perfectly fine in algebra questions). Just dont get stuck.
Be fast. practice mental calculation. it will save you a lot of time.
Obviously you have to know the rules and the topics the sat will be testing you about. After that, focus on your weaknesses and spent a lot of time solving worksheets of the topic. Just search for them in google, they dont have to be SAT related.
With math, when a problem sounds overwhelming sometimes you have to take a step back and try to solve it as you would in real life. be practical.
Figure out some calculator hacks for the calculator allowed section.
For the formulas and concepts, make flashcards, it is a great way to memorize.
General Tips
Overall, when you test yourself try to do it timing yourself 5 minutes less than what the actual exam gives to you. This will allow you to be faster.
SUPER IMPORTANT: get a notebook and annotate EVERY question you get wrong. Ask yourself why you got that question wrong and what you can do to not commit the same mistake again. This is super important because the SAT works in patterns, and usually the questions will be similar, so if you got a question wrong and you do not understand why that happened, there is this huge probability this is going to happen on the real exam
Remember is not about spending LOTS of hours studying for this test, is about practicing and getting better at the questions you usually do wrong. Dont stress yourself over this test, because that may give you test anxiety and that is the last thing we want.
Practice some meditation. It will help you reduce the test anxiety and also allow you to focus more
I used Khan academy and UWorld  for practice questions (they are both free), also used the college board eight official tests. Downloaded some books online and bought the princeton review book but meh they actually didnt help much imo. If you want some extra practice go check old sat practice tests, some questions may help.
