part of the appeal of furbies for me is that they aren't for everyone. as someone who feels weird and different and alone, furbies feel like a kindred spirit.

I mean its perfectly reasonable for a 15yo m #definitely a Lot of racism and colonialism which is not fun to read! though it's still through a YA lens. there was def a part of me that #was imagining consequences of the narrative as if it were an adult novel #on that line of thought - at the end a lot of it is kind of solved by them going to the king and he's is like. oh no racism is happening? #that's bad i'll deal with those people! which felt like. a little simplistic. but maybe the easiest way to end the narrative for book 1 - #I don't think the author ACTUALLY is going to portray the king as a Good Guy throughout the series - it just felt conveniently like - #a simple YA solution to some very big and complex elements? if that makes sense? this is a good one, but it was a challenge. now bear with me, we're gonna do a dickjaytim celebrity au 👀

Jason’s the celebrity (but like minorly?). He's a theater actor and is well-known in theater circles etc., but most people off the street wouldn’t recognize him. He’s a fan favorite on twitter/social media though, for being a scathing but good critic for new books and books-turned-movies. 

>>Tim’s the CEO of Drake Industries and a rival to Wayne Industries in Gotham (but like he doesn’t take it as seriously as he should to the despair of his board). His parents died when he was a teenager and after graduating high school early, just took on the company and does whatever he wants. 

>>Dick is an orphan and the ward-adoptee of Bruce Wayne. Same backstory as canon, circus kid adopted by rich Gothaminite. Bruce and him act more like older brother-younger brothers and act like Alfred is their father/grandfather figure. Bruce is CEO and offered Dick a position at the company but Dick would rather not. Unclear on what job Dick does in this but he’s not a cop (blegh).  

>>Tim and Dick are local celebrities, well-known and often chased by paparazzi, but Jason’s the real focus for this AU.

So, Tim’s a CEO and has to attend galas and rich people events, socialize and get people invested in his company (as well as prove himself a capable CEO despite being so young). He typically hates these events, dreads going, comes up with any excuse he can, but does attend some. He attends a theater play, expecting not to have to talk or socialize too much because it’s a play, and falls head over heels for the main actor, Jason. 

>>Tim sort of falls into being a stalker-y, secret admirer of Jason but Jason’s pretty smitten with all the nice, thoughtful notes and gifts he’s getting (especially compared to some gross ones he gets from Roman Sionis and other old rich dudes hoping to buy his favor). EXCEPT, Timmy’s not the only one in the running for Jason’s hand. 

>>Enter Dick Grayson. Dick was often third-wheel to galas and other events with Bruce and Selina, often exasperated and bored. But, so so similar to Tim, attends an event expecting to be bored out of his mind and is instead captivated by this stunning actor aka Jason. Cue the courting and gifts. 

And expectedly, Tim and Dick both start to realize there’s someone else trying to steal Jason and they figure out who. And this starts an epic rivalry over Jason’s heart. It starts with trying to out-gift the other, both buying Jason elaborate but meaningful gifts (rare books he likes, regular books, flowers and jewelry, donations to his favorite charities, etc). And it escalates rather quickly. I imagine Dick can be downright mean in this and Tim is just as biting, both unashamed in their rivalry and obsession with Jason. Anyways, there’s a lot of fun and hilarious stuff you could do with Dick and Tim fighting without physically fighting. (I’m giggling over them sniping at each other over twitter and Gothamnities just being ???? until Jason [Gotham’s adored theater nerd] chimes in and fans start having a lightbulb moment) 

Eventually, Tim and Dick’s rivalry hits a high point and the two tumble into bed together. And then they both decide they can just share Jason. Jason, of course, is oblivious to all of this. He likes Dick and Tim a lot, like a little too much, but won’t make the first move because he is a shy baby and then starts to think they’re only doing it as like a weird rich kid rivalry ritual and don’t actually care about him or his feelings. 

After Jason’s (inaccurate) revelation, he starts to pull away from Dick and Tim (especially when paparazzi and social media pick up on the fact that Dick and Tim seem to be “dating”). Dick and Tim take this as a challenge, and Jason (and his coworkers/friends) thought it was bad when those two hated each other, but Tim and Dick working together??? It is…terrifying? Impressive? Terrifyingly impressive? Jason’s already head over heels, but now he’s obsessed even more (but also overwhelmed and a bit light-headed at all the swooning he's doing, it’s a bit too much at times). I’m running out of steam here, but eventually Dick and Tim do manage to convince Jason that yes, they do adore him, and no, this is not a weird rich-kid rival thing. And Gotham breathes a sigh of relief when Jason gets caught leaving Dick-Tim's penthouse covered in hickies and wearing their clothes :))

Something fun to look at with the Rise turtles that for some reason is often used as a slight against them is how their personalities are like mishmashes of different typical traits of past bros.

Like.

For Leo, I see a lot of typical Leo traits in him (ones that are so apparent if you’re looking for them) but he also has some undeniable base Mikey traits.

Raph still has his Raph core, but he takes on some typical Leo traits as well.

Donnie is Donnie, but has some Raph aspects sprinkled in.

And Mikey is Mikey, but has some Donnie traits in him too.

Even April has aspects of all four brothers now which works so well with the fact that she grew alongside them.

A lot of people say these changes are bad but tbh I find it really interesting. Especially when you look further into how this was effected by their different dynamic from the get go in terms of ages and how their Splinter is.

NO CAUSE LITERALLY HELIA IS ANYTHING BUT THE POET

I know it would be really easy to assume that Helia is a poet, most obviously due to him actually being a literal poet and yknow. writing poems. Add on that he is genuinely good with his words and it's like! Duh! BUT NO!! A huge part of his character is that he wants to be the poet but he isn't. Helia acts like a poet. He makes a great first impression, he watches people carefully and responds in whatever way will move the situation best, he can be bitterly truthful and secretive all at once. But while that is still part of him, it's also so, so small in comparison to how he feels inside and how he actually acts.

While I have pondered Helia being the soldier, I gravitate much more toward the King. The king archetype is all about the responsibility that you don't want, that you don't deserve, but still feeling so loyal to it that you can't get away. No matter what they truly want in life, the kings will always go back to that responsibility because it's become them, and leaving literally feels like part of them is gone. They believe they have an intense duty to that responsibility and that leaving would make them the worst person in the world. And like,,, anyone with Helia Brain knows that this is him!! It's everything he feels about Red Fountain!!

Being the poet is all about embracing freedom and that's the one thing Helia refuses to do. He can't do it. He feels so intensely loyal to Red Fountain, and now to his friends, that any other option feels like betrayal to him. His own freedom feels like a betrayal. And that's just such a sad king move,,,

kaede and shuichi going out sometimes in the winter to look at shops and walk around the park while kiibo stays at their apartment (?) (i think he likes snow and rain but not being out in the elements) and kaede and shuichi always come back almost too frozen to move fjdhfjfj

shuchi takes an extra coat because he freezes easily and kaede bundles up her hands, and they hold hands and walk close the whole time to stay warm, but when they get back home kiibo always has to like take their scarves and jackets and gloves off and take them in to sit down under their kotatsu and make some nice hot tea and then he wraps all three of them in a blanket and turns on his heater to warm them up <3 and he asks how their errands went or if they saw anything neat and shuichi is too cold to say much and kaede sleepily tells him whatever happened and then they both fall asleep on him. this happens every single time and kiibo wouldn't trade it for anything in the world

taps mic yes hello i'm here to reiterate that the aro hitori truthing that's been going around hatotumblr recently is so cool and true.

like on one hand no shame to anyone who reads him differently, but also How. he is probably the single fictional character who reads the most Aro that i've ever seen. this man's priorities always feel very focused around love imo - mostly that familial love for nageki and the other hatohouse kids of course. he always seems chill and happy to put himself in positions to help out his students as well tho - he's always so patient with even the most difficult of students, he offers to walk hiyoko home... helping anghel at comiket is absolutely going way more out of his way then he needs to, and yet he does so happily!

yeah yeah he says in his own route that he's "lost his ability to love" (read; i absolutely don't think he has, i think he's just terrified of getting too close to anyone and thus refuses to admit to himself when he does Care nowadays) and maybe part of this is just part of being a good teacher, but there's a lot there outside of school hours that's going very out-of-his-way that he sure as hell aint getting paid for that like. you cannot convince me he doesn't care for his students a lot. i cannot personally interpret that as anything besides "he cares about them and wants to be a good mentor figure and be sure they're being well taken care of" which is def it's own form of love

these are def two of the three main examples, and if you notice, neither of 'em are romantic. It's moreso a caretaker kind of love, something akin to a fatherly/older-brother figure (obviously more literally in the case of the hatohouse, but still)

of course the elephant in the room here is the whole thing with kazuaki-kun, but like

kazuaki's intense vulnerability and loneliness would be the exact sort of thing to draw out the caretaker out of hitori. that older brother instinct of "this person is significantly more vulnerable then me and i have the power to help" which

idk about you but that kind of love/care don't exactly sound like a romantic one to me lol. it's a very... imbalanced love, as the 'caretaker' is kind of pushing themself into a position of more power then the other instead of having an equal partnership. regardless of what kazuaki's feelings about the whole thing were, or what label they may or may not have used, that does not sound like a romantic love to me in the slightest

so like. you have this character who is so focused around love and caring for folks... and yet, somehow none of it is romantic. he never chases after the idea of romance, or shows any real interest in it or anything. leaves out a whole specific type of love despite his character motivations otherwise being driven by love

and idk about you but i can't really think of any explanation that makes more sense as to why he'd ignore a whole type of love then "he doesn't experience romantic love"

#The Final Curse of Ophelia Cray #aroaessidhe 2024 reads #This is ok! I enjoyed it on the surface level but think it could have had a bit more depth and structure #I do always like to see an aroace MC who mentions it casually throughout the story and the central sister relationship #The writing is a little young for me… I think it has this silly/satirical element of the plot and caricature-villains but the prose wasn’t #quite funny enough to make it work....so parts just felt a bit random and undeveloped to me? #I genuinely love a lot of MG and younger YA but this is on the side of writing style #that felt too noticably young for me to enjoy fully (for me - obviously it's for teens! so that's okay!) #It’s quite slow to start (it doesn’t get into it until half way?) and the two storylines felt a bit disconnected. #All the different things happening felt all over the place & I felt the ending was a bit unsatisfying #Betsy’s love interest seemed like a nice interesting boy but it was such instalove I felt like there was no development between them lol #I think it has some fun parts and some good characters! I would still recommend to teens looking for queer piratey stories #(tho as a note - THEY aren't really ever pirates. maybe briefly.) (I think maybe ofmd comps might do it a disservice if you're not clear #it's just 'piratey and also there's queer people) #there's some good side lesbians (def side tho)

At the end of the novel, the author lists twelve hypothetical questions that a reader might ask and answers them. Some of the answers are very similar in nature and, sometimes, contradictory.

The eighth asks how it's possible for Monkey to have a wife and children. He states that the book is simply a dream.

Since the Supplement is about Wukong’s desires, it would be funny if Wukong subconsciously thought Princess Iron Fan was pretty and that Demon Bull King didn’t deserve her (therefore uncle) and that she’d make a good mom for his 5 sons that he also apparently desired? Wukong desiring Tang to be a warlord though XD

Sometimes people are all about allegories, and nothing about substance! Which nothing wrong as long as it is entertaining. I do like how he anticipated the question because he knew himself, but he didn't explain them well enough. Also that Red Boy also doesn't exist in the book as it was said that these were Princess Iron Fan's first kids so its like Wukong willed Red Boy from ever existing as well! THAT IS FUNNY! He wanted a big family and no annoying nephew! Nooooo!

While I will admit it is absolutely insane. I myself hope one day to have a script of how to make it into something of substance because I think there is a lot to work with. Time travel and inter-dimensional transportation aren't anything new but to know that this was one of the first 'time travel' books out there is pretty fun! It’s somewhere between a dream and a nightmare, where the dreams become so intense that they just go overboard. I feel like nowadays a lot could be played with, especially with how to look into what Wukong really wants and what he is willing to do to take it when in the middle of his journey. Like to measure himself mentally where he has changed from being willing to do anything in his power to get what he wants verse actually seeing the consequences of his desire affecting those around him that he has grown to care about and how their lives are ruined as well.

Sanzang becoming a general probably is too farfetched but the idea is that he becoming controlled by a Evil King because Wukong left and Sanzang lost his way. Now THAT can be interesting. Bajie tries to go back to Gao but as expected by rejected and thus he also joins the Evil Army. THAT is a cool take. Wujing being lost in all this and going back to hire hermit lifestyle, THAT IS SAD. BaiLong been forever, forgotten by his family and force the roam the Earth has a horse. THAT IS ALSO SO SAD. I don't know why people look any further for angst when if this story could be put in a more cohesive manner without the loose plot point or useless quests could be an interesting introspective of Wukong's desires have how they have changed from what he thought he wants versus what he wants now.

I do feel like a lot of the takes are more out of character but that is what makes it kind of scary and a bad timeline way. To think that because you (Wukong) can push people to new means. Maybe Wukong just wanted a big family before and missed his monkey, projecting that onto Princess Iron Fan who is deprived of both a son and husband and he understood that missing family. And maybe he feels responsible for both Bajie and Wujing on his journey to keep them together else they lose their ways and just go back to being forgotten criminals of heaven, nothing better than canon fodder. And his greatest fear of Sanzang losing his way... and becoming more like him. Choosing violence as the real answer to his problems, similar to Wukong. Any little desire he wished for Sanzang to be "more like him" taken to the extreme of him being a general sending out armies.

And it's that image of King Paramita, his desire for a family verse General Sanzang, his desire for Sanzang to be stronger (or rather just a little bit crueler to their enemies) being forced to confront each other in the climax!

Like I said there are a lot of wishy-washy side quests in the middle that really lead nowhere and are more of a commentary of the times and certain historical figures but there CAN be a lot of interesting plot points that could be SO MUCH FUN to play with! Wukong is always some of the first to say that he is a monk that left the family but maybe he still has that desire to be more than a grandpa to his monkeys and he a family man, but is that worth the cost of the friends he made along the way? I like to think that a lot of dreams are more his distorted desires which is what a lot of the book is. He even meets himself in a human form in the book which helps him out of his red strong of desire to help see reason.

It is only at the end when he sees the son he never knew kill Sanzang does he lose his mind, going into his giant form as he tries to destroy everything around him in a second.

But he can't.

Because he finally starts to wake up.

And when he sees that Fake Fish coming in as their "new" fellow disciples.

Man does NOT hesitate to snap his neck for messing with his dreams like that.

Have to admit that is definitely one way to end a story! But why anyone that is interested I definitely recommend it a read if anyone has the time!
