since leitmotifs is your thing, I would love to see your personal analysis on the evolution of the ringtone "over the horizon" by Samsung. quite frankly, I think it is a very important thing to analyze, as something so trivial as a ringtone has shaped our view of a phone.

Ok so ringtones are something that most people never really think about in their day-to-day lives. It's a noise we hear all the time, and something that we most often will take for granted with how much it is "overplayed" to us. Personally, I've only ever had an iphone so I am not at all used to Samsung's ringtone, which I feel gives me a unique perspective on the matter.

So without further ado, I'll take this year by year and then analyze my results at the end

2011 (Galaxy S2): This is off to a great start. We have a good theme, and the percussion behind it is perfect. This is the kind of ringtone you want to have in your pocket. The kind that says "we're in a disney summer movie montage and we're living our best life!" Overall, a great start.

2012 (Galaxy S3): This one feels like it's trying to do too much. It still has the core leitmotif from the first ringtone, but gone are the feel good vibes of the percussion. Every note that is rung in here feels like it's trying to personally attack you, and that's not even to mention the drums! Everything here is too sharp, and the violins come completely out of nowhere. This definitely feels more like what you would expect a ringtone to be, rather then something that makes you smile when you hear it.

2013 (Galaxy S4): OH WE'RE SO BACK. This is definitely more aligned to the feel of the first one, but it also did so much more without seeming like it was trying to! This is the first one that really uses the core theme more like a leitmotif, and treats it as "this is the melody that you're used to, as a little treat, but check out this too!" and that's exactly what it should be! All in all, this one's just lovely.

2014 (Galaxy S5): This is pretty much just like the 2013 one but I definitely noticed that the parts where the orchestra crescendoed were much stronger, giving it a much more prideful feel.

2015 (Galaxy S6): Ok I'm not saying this one is bad, but it kinda comes out of nowhere and has this vibe to it like you're either about to get a news report or witness a major moment in a coming of age edited in imovie. It also just kind of abruptly cuts off? There's no musical resolution here and that makes me sad. :(

2016 (Galaxy S7): This one starts off so good. It's got a good beat to it and we're vibing so hard dude. But then, it uh, uh, it kinda struggles? I get that was how it composed but it honestly feels like someone on a marimba is struggling to keep time and it makes me nervous like girl we do not need these eighth and sixteenth rests in here we are perfectly fine without them thank you (still better than 2015 tho).

2017 (Galaxy S8): HELLO??? GIRLIE WHERE DID YOU COME FROM THIS IS THE BEST ONE YET! THE BUM BUM BAAS??? Anyway this one is genuinely so incredibly incredible. It starts off with a good beat that it continues to keep up throughout, it makes good use of the leitmotif, and there's a bunch of guys vocalizing in the background like who's idea was that that's incredible!!! :D

2018 (Galaxy S9): This is literally just the emotional climax of a coming of age story it isn't even a ringtone anymore.

2019 (Galaxy S10): Oh she wants to be the sims 4 character creator theme so bad. Anyway this one also doesn't really feel like a ringtone but not in a bad way! Girlie is going off in the string instrument department and it is paying off this just feels great. And the way they do the original leitmotif in the chimes at the end? Oh I love her.

2020 (Galaxy S20): This one is kinda sweet and chill. It definitely feels like it's being played on either a sitar or a mandolin, and it uses that to create a very chill vibe. There are no background instruments or percussion at all, so that really just further proves that these are straying more and more away from the sound of a typical ringtone (for better or for worse). I will say, this definitely feels like something I would try to fall asleep to, not like something I would use to remind me to pick up the phone.

2021 (Galaxy S21): She's so pretty??? I would say that this also has a similar vibe to the last one but I like it a lot more. The piano is absolutely beautiful and I really really enjoy it. And even though this also doesn't really feel like a ringtone, I'd argue that it's better at being one than the 2020 one.

(We're gonna stop there cuz I feel like it.)

If I were to rank all of these, I would say from best to worst: 2017, 2014, 2021, 2013, 2019, 2011, 2020, 2018, 2016, 2015, 2012

Ultimately, I feel like something like this is very interesting to look at. We can see overtime Samsung trying different strategies with this and how that reflects on their future models for it. For example, we ended up with most of these reflecting what I've been calling the "coming of age story" vibe, and we notice how they strive to create much more of a beautiful song to listen to than something trying to alert you of calls. All in all, an interesting look at such a mundane part of life.

Narratives in motion

Intro

Coming in from the last project I knew that I would struggle to find something new to do with the text. The trouble I had with this extract when tying to create a narrative, was the fact that not much actually happens in it. Orlando gets up, looks in the mirror, then leaves. I knew I had to evolve the story somehow, as my final piece for the last project was a pretty basic retelling of the extract. What helped me get inspired in the last project was reading the original text, so for this project, I decided to watch the 1992 film based on the book. I found it a very quiet film, there’s not much dialogue, It mostly relies on visuals to carry it. The film also follows a repetitive structure, it’s split into very specific themes. I really loved the film, I though it made Orlando a very relatable character, and I decided to have my animation borrow the rigid structure of the movie, but try and update the themes for a more modern experience.

Process

In the briefing for this project we were encouraged to collaborate across courses. I reached out to two friends of mine who are studying sound design and film to help me with this project. They helped me storyboard and write a full script, as well as made the sound bites that I wanted to put in the final piece. I felt pretty confident in making the puppet, as I have some experience with crafting and sewing, however, I was feeling less confident at stop motion animation, as I know it can take much longer to make than you think it will. During this project I suffered a few setbacks that were out of my control, which meant I had much less time to create the final price that I initially thought I would. Luckily for me, our animations could also include live action and digitally animated segments, so I edited my script to include more of these mediums which I could make quicker that stop motion. This meant removing the stop motion I was planning on doing with the puppet. The puppet would still be featured in the film, but It would save me a lot of time. I sewed the puppet out of felt and some leftover fabric I had lying around. I opted to not put a wire inside the upper, as previously mentioned, the puppet wouldn’t be required to hold a pose. I also made a miniature set of an art gallery out of a cardboard box and collage. I used procreate to make some animated gifs, to replace parts of the script I had scrapped for time. I did this pretty quickly as I had done it recently, for the previous project. Finally, in keeping with the style of the movie, I made some title cards to introduce a new section of the film.

Over the Christmas break, I was able to think about the outcome of the project, though I appreciated the help I was getting on the project, as the deadline approached I felt it would be easier to film the puppet sections by myself, rather than to schedule around another person, as well as equipment hire. I also began to feel less and less excited about the project, and thought I would rather save the collaborative energy for something I was more passionate about. I also thought that the quality jump between iPhone animations and professionally filmed high quality footage would be distracting, and not really fit with the aesthetic of the film. So, over the next few days, I filmed all the missing pieces of my animation on my phone, and edited the clip together roughly on iMovie (as it was the simplest to use), and used my favorite peices of music from the original movie to finish the audio. After I had finished filming everything, I edited the final version of the film.

Reflection

My general thoughts about the project was that it took much longer than I thought it would. Obviously there were some unavoidable circumstances in the beginning stages of the project, but toward the end of the project and the hand in deadline, I started to put off working on it as it felt like some insurmountable task, probably due to the difficulty I had had during the beginning of the project. However as I started to complete small chunks of the larger task, I realised it wasn’t as scary as I had first thought. It still took longer than I thought it would, but it was much more manageable process than I was initially worried about. If I could do the project again, I would definitely keep my ideas more simple. In the planning stages of this project I found myself really struggling to come up with an idea that I was satisfied with. I think if I had thought on a smaller scale, I would have been able to come up with something I could have finished within the initial time slot, for example, while working on the filming section of my animation, I thought of a much simple concept I could have done with a dog, waiting for its owner to wake up from a deep sleep, much like in the text. I could have achieved this with one set and two puppets. Overall, I am proud that I finally completed the project, but probably won’t work with stop motion animation again. I am excited to collaborate further with students on other courses such as film and sound design.

Preliminary Task - Post 4

The following snippet below is a short series of scenes captured using various camera shots, angles and movements. The snippet contains sound effects as well.

I created this short film in attempt to incorporate various camera shots, angles and movements with the use of diegetic as well as non-diegetic sounds to create a horror/thriller genre short film.

Using sound effects is key, as they are unpredictable, and making use of darker/gloomier lighting adds to the suspense of the film. I created this short film on iMovie on my iPhone, taking me approximately 45 minutes to record and edit, add necessary sound effects and adjusting the lighting.

Some of the difficulties I faced were regarding capturing footage, as my acting wasn't good (even in the short film above its not great) and I had to shoot certain shots several times.

Open the video in QuickTime Player and check if the codecs are supported by iMovie. Or the video is recorded by the camera in a format that iMovie doesn't like. Select the clip in the browser, then press the E key. Select the 'Finish Line.mov' file in the list, then click the Import. Choose File > Import Media, then click Desktop in the Import window sidebar. This can happen because a specific audio file is rendered in an unsupported codec in the creation or import process. Click projects to return to the Projects view. In order to reset this, I had to launch Photos with the option key pushed and a menu will come up, create a new. What I had to do is to set Use as system photo library in the Photos preferences, but it was grayed out. If there is no audio wave form in iMovie after you import the video from your Mac, it means the sound is not imported into iMovie at all. So, after I upgraded to macOS High Sierra 10.13, the Photos app updated and iMovie no longer attached it in the Library. Check if the audio/video formats are supported You will need to get the non-DRM audio for iMovie or remove the DRM (legally).

Even if you download the Apple Music to the local music library on the Mac won't remove the DRM protection. I still have WLMM and intend to hang onto it for as long as I can and I can fall back on iMovie on my MacBook.

While I’m often the person my friends and family call upon for technical support for Windows, Android, or things on the internet, I have little experience with the Apple ecosystem. But when my friend Josh told me about his sudden and confusing issue with Final Cut Pro X, I was so intrigued that I had to investigate. We eventually figured it out, and I got a crash-course in OSX as well.

The issue:

Final Cut Pro X (10.2) would crash and display a “Final Cut Pro quit unexpectedly” error message whenever an export option was selected.

Bought the macbook in 2015. Actually I am running El Capitan. Version 10.11.6. Technician's Assistant: Have you installed any updates recently? Whatever it told me to update. Technician's Assistant: Anything else you want the computer expert to know before I connect you? Messages won't sync from iphone anymore. Download OS X El Capitan. In your Mac/existing Hackintosh/virtual machine running Mac OS X, open the Mac App Store app and download the latest version of OS X El Capitan. This is a 8 GB download, so it's probably going to take a while. Once the Mac App Store app finishes downloading OS X El Capitan, an update window will pop up. Note: If you are running OS X El Capitan 10.11, download this version of Malwarebytes for Mac. Locate the downloaded file Malwarebytes-Mac-4.x.y.zzz.pkg. 4.x.y.zzz represents the version number. In most cases, downloaded files are saved in the Downloads folder. Double-click the file Malwarebytes-Mac-4.x.y.zzz.pkg to start the setup wizard.

FCPX – Version 10.2, without Compressor or Motion.

iMovie – 10.1.6

No new applications had been installed recently, and FCPX had been working correctly after the last OSX upgrade. We couldn’t try restoring from a backup as there weren’t any viable backups, but all of the following troubleshooting steps had already been tried without success:

restarting the MacBook

clearing FCPX preferences

making a new FCPX library

deleting generated render files

making a new user account

booting in safe mode

Testing

Firstly, we sent a video from iMovie 10.1.6 to FCPX before exporting it – as we expected, it still crashed. Then we realised that we hadn’t tested iMovie itself. When we tried to export a video from iMovie, it didn’t crash, but it did give us an error message.

Exporting “test” has failed. The operation couldn’t be completed. (com.apple.Compressor.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain Error -1.)

With keywords to learn on, figuring out the issue got a little easier. Searching for an iMovie issue, rather than an FCPX issue, displayed multiple apple support threads and reddit posts from people with the same problem Unfortunately, most responses covered the troubleshooting tips we had already tried, or decried Apple for its insolubility.

Then Josh remembered that a few days before, he had plugged his iPhone into his Mac, and received a pop-up about updating his Mac to let iTunes understand his phone. This timing meant the iTunes-related update was now a prime suspect, even if that didn’t make any sense on the surface.

After diving into Apple Support threads, I found someone else who had not only experienced this exact problem after updating their iTunes, but had also figured out why. According to this user, the iTunes update“… updated the Library MobileDevice.framework, into a newer version that is only 64bits compatible, and not anymore multi-architecture i386 and X86_64.”

Although Apple have been building MacBooks with a 64-bit architecture since 2007, and encouraging developers to create 64-bit apps since OSX Snow Leopard (2009), they have maintained support for 32-bit apps. However, from OSX Catalina (2019) onwards, they only support 64-bit apps. This process of switching over to “exclusively 64-bit” appears to have created problems.

Connecting a device that’s running iOS 12 or newer prompts iTunes to update its “Mobile Device Framework” – the services that let iTunes connect to mobile devices. This new version of the Mobile Device Framework is 64-bit only, while previous versions were compatible with both 64-bit and 32-bit apps. The problem with iMovie and with Final Cut appears to be caused by having the new 64-bit only version of the Mobile Device Framework. Searching further also revealed that Cinema4D users and GarageBand users experienced similar issues after updating their iTunes to connect to a new phone, so errors with the Mobile Framework appear to create problems for other video and audio applications. I assume that some parts of iMovie, FCPX, and other media programs rely on having a Mobile Device framework with 32-bit compatibility, and so are stymied by the new version. While I have no idea about the details of why this is the case, having a defined problem does make a solution easier to find.

Solutions

I found two solutions, one logical and one less so. If you have a Time Machine backup from before the iTunes-related update, and having your video working is more important than connecting your iPhone, then the logical option is to swap the new mobile device framework file with the previous one to restore its functionality. The process for this is:

Open a Time Machine backup and find the mobile device framework file. By default, this file is stored in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.Framework

Restore the backed-up MobileDevice.Framework to your Desktop (or anywhere that isn’t the Library).

Boot into safe mode (by holding Shift as you power on the Mac)

Delete the old MobileDevice.Framework file and replace it with the backed-up version

Reboot

Success…. well, hopefully!

If this procedure doesn’t work, if you don’t have a Time Machine backup, or if connecting your iPhone is a priority, the only solution recognised by Apple Support is to upgrade to OSX Catalina and use the versions of iMovie, FCPX and iTunes required by Catalina.

We had to go with option 2, which required upgrading directly from El Capitan to Catalina, updating iMovie and iTunes, then installing Final Cut Pro 10.4.8. After completing this process, FCPX and iMovie both exported clips correctly. (However, we are ironing out an issue with FCPX not installing correctly, which is likely to be caused by the .dmg file we used rather than with Catalina).

Conclusion

I assume that the 64-bit only nature of Catalina means that apps will depend on fewer frameworks and system files, which in future will reduce the chances of conflicts like this one. However, in the present, transitioning to full 64-bit will result in more issues like this appearing. For many people, upgrading to Catalina isn’t possible yet, as it will invalidate apps they urgently need. So for Apple Support to emphasise upgrading as a solution seems clumsy at best. The advice reinforces how the unexplorable walled-garden nature of OSX makes it hard for users to understand why issues appear. More importantly, it ignores that customers who trust the advice to make upgrade their entire OS as a first-line solution to their issues may then be left with the burden of any problems that result.

It all started about a year and a half ago when my wife and I made the decision to get her tubes untied and have one final kid together. It was my first one and we worked at the same factory making energy drinks. After we set a date for the surgery we decided then would be the time to leave the company. I wanted her to be a stay at home mom and to be the breadwinner so to speak. The only problem was my wife was addicted to working. I quickly found another job where I did inventory for a food company and the only opening they had was in a -15 degrees freezer.

I was miserable. My wife was miserable. She went from living the workaholic lifestyle to this angry pregnant woman that never before was able to stay at home, leaving her bored and confused on what to do with her newfound free time. I hated having to count in such cold conditions for 2 sometimes 3 hours at a time. I became numb to the feeling of what felt like my fingers and face getting so cold it was almost like they were being stomped on by someone multiple times a day.

I began to look at skills I had. I wasn’t really good at anything. I could play video games. Call of Duty, Apex Legends, Fortnite, I was good at all those games and tried starting a YouTube channel. I quickly gave up on that after a few months of trying to have to edit all my videos with an app called iMovie on my iPhone. I was lost. I couldn’t make my wife happy. So I began to research ways to make money.

I tried everything I could find on any top 10 lists. Freelancing, Surveys, Content Mills, you name it and nothing worked. I was at work one day alone in my thoughts in my dark and extremely cold dungeon when I remembered my 16 year old self walking into a thrift store with my best friend and buying the two ugliest Lacoste suit jackets we could find as a joke. That pair of jackets was a total of $4.00.

A few years later my friend moved out of state for college and left his jacket behind. I was in need of money so I figured eh I’ll try to sell some of my clothes online. I sold those two jackets for $150 all together, making a $146 profit off a joke. I thought to myself why not ask my wife what she thought of this.

At first we went to store clearance sections and hopped around thrift stores in the area to try to find us some merchandise. At a goodwill I found two items. A pair of Duke Nike Slides and a Greenbay Packers banner from the 80s. Now I’m not big into sports but I knew both those teams had quite a following. We rushed home and posted them and working a few hours we had made a 600% ROI. We were hooked.

We began thrifting more and sourcing a few cheap products from China. We were going to the flea market on weekends and we’re making money, just not as fast as we were wanting to make it. I had heard of liquidations a few years back and how some people saw them as a waste of money. I didn’t care what everyone thought though and we started looking for products online.

One afternoon my wife saw an auction online for smart watches. She immediately placed a bid and won the auction later that night. What she didn’t notice until after paying was that they were salvage. We had no idea what to expect to come into the mail later that week. What we got was three packages that weighed about 50 lbs a piece.

We opened them up and started look through them. The reason they were marked as salvage was they were account locked. Within a few hours we had all the watches wiped and working like new and began to try to sell them online. Only two sold by the time I went to work the next day and that’s when things took a turn.

I was at work for 8 hours, making $15 an hour. $120 that shift. By the time I left work we collectively sold $1600 in smart watches that a few days earlier we thought were considered “salvage”. We then really had some planning to do……

y’know i love memes as much as anyone else on this hellsite and the internet in general. but one meme i can’t stand now, as well as a joke used by older comedians about ~kids today!!!! am i right???~ that i can’t stand now, is the one that’s like “all 10 year olds want today is an iphone or an ipad or a macbook for their birthday or christmas! all i got for my 10th birthday/christmas as a kid was a tennis racquet and a tether ball that hit me in the face! kids are so spoilt today! you better get an i-job to i-pay for your spoilt mac-ass!”

because like.... do you not understand that in today’s increasingly over-connected world, ipads and macbooks or other tablets/laptops are pretty much required school equipment now, if your 10yo kid’s primary/elementary etc school has a ~bring your own device~ policy for kids in years 4-6??? like obviously yes, some schools will provide students with laptop/tablet trolleys and stuff.... or also the government might have a program to roll out laptops/tablets to schools (like australia did under rudd and gillard).... that some schools will literally put “parents must get a reliable tablet computer or laptop computer for their child to use for assignments”. when it comes to high school, i imagine that they’ll need their own laptop/tablet the whole way through their time there, if there is no longer any school provided or limited school provided laptops/desktop computers/tablets.

that’s besides the point that laptops etc are even more so required now than ever before, after everyone was forced to do homeschooling because of covid??? so. practically. a kid asking for a macbook/ipad or other tablets/laptops for their birthday or christmas, isn’t such a bad idea for a present??? even if yeah. apple is overrated and overpriced to the max. but suck it up and pay for your child’s future education??? even it means getting a cheaper laptop or tablet for your kid.

all i can say on the above point is that yes. the idea of ~bring your own device~ policies does set many families back- especially those in/from lower income areas/backgrounds or single parent families... considering that a decent tablet will set you back at least $500 and a decent mini laptop is around the same.... but bigger and better laptops are around $1000 on sale (windows) or idek like $1,200 on an apple education pricing deal. like yeah. it’s a demarcation thing and also setting some people up to fail. and again, this has been made increasingly obvious during covid due to different families acces to buying laptops/tablets or other internet connection means. i also understand that these big ticket item purchases of tablets/laptops hits the hip pockets of everyone harder during the pandemic, especially if you’re struggling with debt like mortgage repayments or whatever while being made redundant or are being paid less while working from home.

okay. not to sound like a spoilt brat of a kid, but i got my first laptop, an i-book G4 for my 10th birthday in 2005. then almost 10 years later, i got a macbook for my 18th birthday (and for my HSC/end of high school exams) in 2013. yes, this is the macbook that i promptly fucked up two years later in 2015, by trying to encrypt the hard drive, since i was taking it to uni and it had all my internet passwords remembered on it along with my banking details. the same goes for my other windows laptop... where the hard drive just decided to fry itself like 4 months into me using it, along with the trackpad. and that was a $1,200 ASUS laptop (bought on sale) that i was using for uni. and then finally my little HP stream laptop’s keyboard shorted out halfway through a creative writing class (that was $500 and it only has a 28gb hard drive so it’s very light and good for transport).

but my point is, me having my own laptop (as opposed to using the family computer only) helped me immensely in my studies..... and they were literally fucking essential to me both in business college and uni. but they were also helpful in late high school, considering that 90% of my assignment work was expected to be typed out in microsoft word or powerpoint or excel (for maths and science). or for more creative projects, i was expected to use adobe photoshop and video editing software like imovie or adobe premiere pro (art/computer tech/drama/that weird year 7 subject i did called INTEL) and garageband/sibelius (for music). how on earth was i supposed to keep doing work on adobe photoshop or word etc at home if i didn’t have my own laptop to continue the work???

because as a final point, for me, literally by year 10 in 2011, NOT ONE of my assignments was expected to be handwritten (bar my actual exams or in class tests; also state tests/exams etc; or if it was a poster or visual art). if you dared to turn in something handwritten, the teacher and student interaction would be like the following example:

teacher to a kid whose handed in a handwritten assignment: did you not read the assessment outline? it said WORD PROCESSED WITH WORD! what is this handwritten thing? okay fine. i’ll take it this time. but read the outline next time, timothy!

the above scenario was the same for me in years 11 & 12. also, by year 9/2010, we were using the education management system moodle (and maybe early stage presi for online presentations) for both of our HSIE subjects (history and geography) and i think a couple of other subjects, during most lessons and especially for class work that involved group work/class discussions, via online discussion boards function. my year group was actually was actually one of the test year groups for the early models of moodle. so by the time i was in uni, i was a native to using moodle; so i could skip the “moodle help tutorial” subject portions on it in every class.

hell, for today, i wouldn’t be surprised if foreign language subject faculties in high schools are now using school subscription class accounts or something for duolingo or babbel. and today, kids are learning coding from like year 4 onwards, i think, on apps at school as part of their science & tech studies lesson portion of the day. how on fucking earth are kids meant to keep up with their class work progression on coding apps or whatever, at home, if they don’t have their own laptop/tablet??? ridiculous. how would kids fare today without their own laptop/tablet, if all of their classwork for homeschooling is on like google drive/cloud or whatever other open source drive/open source cloud software their school uses?? or any other apps that their school might use??? obviously we are seeing this play out in real time during the pandemic, world over, where if a child is in a single parent family or if their two parents don’t have adequate enough resources/have been fired or let go from their jobs/juggling working from home and homeschooling; then it’s hurting these kids likelihood of doing well with distance learning.

but yeah. my point is that if your kid is asking you for a laptop or a tablet (regardless of brand) for their birthday or christmas, maybe buy them one?? because you never know. it may be the very thing at the top of their student resource list for the following school year. and also. do you know what stops kids fighting over their access to the family computer/tablet to do their assessments etc??? buying them their own personal laptops or tablets. even if they do cost an arm and a fucking leg. get your heads out of your asses and help your own goddamned kids (or relatives if it’s a nephew/niece etc asking for one) like you’re supposed to.

okay. for phones. i’ll admit i wouldn’t like a 10 year old having their own phone, because of social media being so easy to access on them. but if you don’t allow them to use the app store and don’t allow them to download instagram/facebook et al..... and give them the phone solely for safety reasons, i think that’s fine?

i’ve had a phone since i was 10 years old. also not to sound awfully clichè, but i turned out okay??? i had to have a phone back in year 4/2005 due to safety and also family issues. do you know what my teachers did with it? locked it away in their desk til the end of the day. obvs they had to remind me to take it home sometimes (bc i did leave it behind at school in the desk a few times lmao) but yeah. i was alright. if a kid wants a phone..... maybe make a compromise and get the classic nokia 3310 or something?? like i obvs agree that kids as young as 10 defs don’t need a smartphone like an iphone or a samsung galaxy. but a rock solid and basic nokia 3310 or whatever with no wifi access??? that’s good enough imo.

How to Make Decent GIFs!

Wanna get started making GIFs and need someone to give you a beginner friendly tutorial that doesn’t involve downloading complex and expensive programs? I got you. I literally just learned how to do this a few days ago so this is a very beginner friendly space. Tutorial under the cut!

Step One: Get Your Clips! First thing you need is your footage. I use the screen record feature on my iPhone, you can use something similar on other phones or on a computer. Also, make sure you’re recording in the highest quality possible. On YouTube that’s usually 720p or 1080p, if you’re recording a movie or TV show try to get HD if possible.

Step Two: Trim Them Down! I use iMovie to trim the clips down to the exact part I want to GIF, which usually ends up being a little less than a second. You can use whatever app or program you have, it doesn’t have to be fancy, it just needs to do the job.

Step Three: Load the Clips to Your Computer! This next step you can’t really do on a phone, so you need to transfer them to your computer or laptop. I’ve found the easiest way to do this is by syncing with Google Photos and then I can access them on all devices, but you can also email them to yourself or sync it some other way.

Step Four: Make a Kapwing Account! Kapwing is a free online editing software that’s great for video and GIF editing! You can make a free account easily and then you’re ready to get started!

Step Five: Start Editing! Once you have an account, click on studio and upload the video clip you want to edit.

This is what it should look like at first. There’s a lot of different things you can do, but I’ve personally only messed with the effects so that’s what I’m going to focus on.

The first thing I do is turn down the frame speed. You don’t have to do this if you like the speed of the clip as it is, I just personally like slowing down most of mine. Next thing you’re gonna do is click the “Adjust” button.

Here, you can mess around with the opacity, brightness, contrast, saturation, and blur. If I’m doing a GIF set, usually I’ll put all the same levels on everything so everything looks cohesive, but you don’t have to.

Step Six: Export! Once you’ve edited it to what you want, you’re ready to export it as a GIF! First, click the settings button in the top right corner.

This window will open, and then you want to select GIF format and high quality. Once you’ve done that, close this window and click publish in the top right corner.

It’ll take a minute or so to load, and then you’ll get this screen. Click download and there you go!

(don’t worry that it says the GIF is public because it’s a free account, literally the only way anyone could see or find it is if someone had a direct link)

Step Seven: HELP! My GIFs won’t upload to Tumblr! Don’t worry! You can fix this! This has happened for a few of my GIFs and all it requires is changing the file size a bit. Tumblr only allows files 10MB and smaller, so if your GIF is more than that, it won’t load.

Go to the EZgif Optimizer and upload the GIF.

Over 13MB! YIKES! Now what you gotta do is mess with the compressor and click optimize GIF until the final product is 10MB or less. I recommend starting at 5 and then slowly increasing it.

Yay! Now we’ve got it under 10MB! Now you can save it and upload it to Tumblr without any issues!

My left hand on the other hand, took years of practice, patients and dedication. If you practice for 10 minutes a day you will improve by the end of the year. An hour a day, in a matter of months. 8 hours a day and you might end up like Jimi Hendrix.

My Music history: I started playing the acoustic guitar I purchased at the local markets for 50 bones in the beginning and I had a few guitar lessons, where I learnt basic chords, the minor and major scale, string names, music notes and tone tone semitone tone tone tone semitone. Guitar basics that are vital to continue a learning music the right way. I played bass from about 14 - 20 years old in a few different bands. I had one singing lesson when I was about 25 and I learnt how to breath and push from the stomach, I had no idea before that and still have to remind myself.
