Vampires don’t have reflections because of the belief that your reflection is your soul and vampires don’t have souls. It’s not the thing Freddie said about silver. At least, that was the case for the gothic, Dracula-style vampires that D&D vampires are based on. 

#dungeons and daddies #dndads #I know the ep came out 4 days ago and i'm barely in this fandom #but i just had to say something somewhere #and I don't have twitter #i wonder how i would actually go about figuring out where the thing about silver mirrors and vampires started #i should talk to like. a librarian or something. #i'm actually very curious #i know it's mentioned in the tomb of dracula which was published in 1972 #but i only know that because i saw the silver nitrate thing in blade (1998) and decided to look into that #i wouldn't know how to do real research #wikipedia claims that vampires are weak to silver in north american folklore and some european folklore #i'll admit i don't know the first thing about any north american folklore but i also know that modern literary vampires aren't based on it #so i don't think that's relevant here #as for european folklore there's no source given #and a traditionally published encyclopedia of vampires tells me european folklore vampires weren't weak to silver except in some rare cases #like the author .. editor? ... was able to find precisely three accounts in all their research #and again these would not be the stories modern literary vampires are based on #they're based on eastern european folklore to an extent but also more explicitly they're inspired by a lot of stories/books/poems/etc. #published throughout the 19th and 20th centuries #with each author sort of taking things and leaving other things and adding their own things until our vampires are different is a trope #but basically someone at some point was the first to suggest vampires are weak to silver #and probably someone else was the first to suggest that weakness is somehow the reason vampires don't have reflections #and that person may have been roy thomas and/or stan lee and/or gerry conway in 1972 #but also maybe not
