Note
i just started watching avatar the last airbender and why does aang x zuko remind me of winteriron,,, like, their dynamic had so much potential for romance (aged-up, obviously) ughhh anyway am I the only one who thinks this like omg the potential the potentiaaaaaal I can’t stop thinking about it. I’m only about to finish season 2 so I’m excited to see how the show goes from here. It’s been absolutely amazing so far I’ve never watched a show as well written
One of my OG ships............honestly though I think they could’ve been a really cute disaster teen / childhood crush romance? Zuko’s pursuit of Aang could’ve so easily gotten into pigtail pulling -> genuine friendship -> panicked realization of feelings. I genuinely enjoyed their canon dynamic a lot in the show and could’ve seen it turning into something more eventually.  As adults, though. Ahhhhhhhhhh. Old soul who is secretly immature romance goals. It shares some of the intertwined destiny tropes that WinterIron thrives on, as well as the inescapable fame and transition from villainy to heroism + damage by war. I feel like Aang’s WHOLE vibe is so different from Tony’s though and Zuko is infinitely too awkward to ever be as suave as Bucky ahahaha. They do have some of the same bones, and maybe that’s why I love them both, but Zuko and Aang are a whole different brand of chaotic idiocy.

I love her, damn it!
______________________________________
Part 2 (Part 1 here)
Ship: Sokka x f!firebender!reader
Warnings: swearing, injuries, captive abuse, a bit of angst, but it ends well
Genre: angst-to-comfort
Fic type: Scenario
A/n: This is part 2 of the "I love her, damn it!" miniseries. Sorry that it took so long and I apologize to those who have sent in their requests. I've seen them and am already working on them. You can expect them to be completed in about a week.
Other than that, I hope you enjoy and have a nice day!
______________________________
(Y/n) was sure she had lost the perception of time at this point. All the blood loss, torture, and generally not being able to see the sun in the freezing metal cell had made her head fuzzy and not being able to recall what day or time it was.
She didn't know if it was hours, days, maybe weeks, or even months since she had been captured, but it didn't really matter at this point. (Y/n)'s main goal was to survive and possibly get out of the base to safety.
Just then, (Y/n) heard footsteps outside of her cell. Rhythmic, meaning it was probably another Fire Nation soldier that had come to either 'beat the traitor' or deliver scraps of food. The firebender heard the footsteps stop near the door and the rhythmic tapping of the keypad of the side of the cell door.
When the captive heard the high-pitched beep of the keyboard, signaling that the correct combination had been entered, (Y/n) threw her head back and groaned, her bound hand tugging at the metal chains around her wrists immobilizing her.
The metal doors to her cell slid open and a cloud of mist rose from the doorway. The girl sighed and through her nose released a mist cloud similar to the doorway and swung her head back in front of her to see who had decided to come to visit her. (Y/n)'s eyes widened when she had set her gaze on the visitor, before quickly relaxing and raising her brows.
"Princess Azula," (Y/n) addressed her, "To what do I owe the pleasure that you personally come to visit a poor firebender like myself in these circumstances?"
"You and I know very well that you aren't just another poor firebender," the princess smirked in reply, crossing her arms behind her back, "You are far more important than those disposable soldiers in this base."
"I suppose so, your Highness," the captive sighed and furrowed her eyebrows when she felt her energy depleting, "However, I would be far too hopeful to think that you've just come here to talk to your old friend. What do you want?"
"Always to the point, as usual," Azula replied as her smirk widened and she turned to slowly walk around the cold cell, "But you are right. You would be far too hopeful to think I've just come to see you."
"And as to what I want," the princess continued "I want to give you a choice."
(Y/n) raised a brow in question as the corners of her mouth started to tug downwards into a grimace at Azula's speech.
"Swear absolute loyalty to me and join the Fire Nation again as a general," she proposed, "And you will walk out of this cell a free woman. I'll arrange it so that no trace of this incident ever exists, and everyone will forget that you were a traitor to your kind."
"And if I refuse?" (Y/n) asked, her eyes locking onto her former friend's own amber ones.
"You'll stay here before you will be brought out by the firing squad to your execution," Azula replied.
"So you're making me choose between two evils. Execution or you." the captive smirked tiredly as her head swayed from side to side, barely managing to keep it up.
"Precisely," the princess turned on her heel to face the captive.
(Y/n) bowed her head, making some of her stray hairs falling in front of her face as she slowly started to laugh. The girl's laughter became louder with each second and she once again tossed her head back before breathing in deeply to calm herself, a huge grin settling on her face.
"Do you really have to ask for my decision? You already know what it will be, Azula," (Y/n) leaned forward as much as her chain bound hands would let her so that she was face to face with the Fire Nation princess before whispering, "My death will at least be without much suffering."
"So execution it is," Azula growled as her grin disappeared from her face and a frown came instead. The princess looked at the triumphant grin on the captive's face before turning away and swiftly walking to the doors of the cell and walking past the guards at the entrance.
"Have the firing squad ready for her execution," Azula commanded one of the guards.
"Yes, your Highness!" the guard replied and closed the cell doors.
(Y/n) sighed as her grin started to fade away. She knew that she couldn't escape this, but in no way did the girl regret her decision. The former general was aware that Azula would exploit her and break her if she had agreed.
And then her thoughts shifted to her friends. Aang, Katara, Toph, Zuko and...Sokka.....
The memory of the water tribe boy's brilliantly blue eyes flashed in her mind, the hand he had reached out to try to help her into the escaping jeep despite their disdain for one another.
"I'll never see him again," (Y/n) sighed out as her hopes shattered, "they won't be able to come for me."
Just as her thoughts started to become deeper into the pit of memories, the firebender's ears picked up the faint sound of footsteps running and shouting outside of her cell.
"Have I really become insane now?" (Y/n) pondered as she felt faint and black spots started to appear in her vision from how tired she felt, "Am I hearing things now?"
The girl's consciousness started to flicker as she supposedly heard footsteps coming closer down the corridor. And for a brief second, (Y/n) thought she could hear Sokka shouting her name and the sliding metal door being busted open with force.
And there they were. Those same sea blue eyes she had gazed into before she had been shot at. And now those blue eyes were the last thing the firebender saw before she had blacked out.
-------------------------------------------------
Sokka felt his heart stop the moment he saw (Y/n) passing out just as they had made it inside her cell. His widened eyes then zeroed on the countless bruises on the girl's body, all of them varying in different sizes, and Sokka felt his blood starting to boil.
"Toph, release her from the chains!" Zuko commanded the blind girl, making the water tribe boy snap out of his thoughts.
"On it!" the girl replied and used her metal bending to crumple the chains around the captive's wrists.
Just as (Y/n) started to fall to the floor, Sokka leaped forward and caught the passed out girl in his arms. Immediately the fingers of his right hand flew up to the left side of the girl's neck, right above an artery, and upon finding the steady beating of her heart sighed in relief.
"Sokka!" Zuko called out to his friend, "We have to go! Now!"
The Fire Nation prince had come closer to the pair and was about to grab (Y/n) out of Sokka's arms to carry, but the younger boy clutched her body closer to his.
"We don't have time for this!" the firebender insisted and reached out for the girl, "Give her to me so that we can get out!"
"No!" Sokka replied stubbornly, "I can handle this myself."
"For fuck's sake, why are you being stubborn about this!" Zuko questioned angrily, "If you give her to me, I can carry her out faster-"
"Because I love her, damn it!" Sokka yelled back at the firebender and hoisted (Y/n)'s limp body up in his arms.
Zuko's eyes widened at his friend's outburst before his brows furrowed in concentration and after a pause spoke.
"Alright," Zuko said calmly, "Get her to the Rendez-vous point. I'll cover for you. Toph, go in front of them and scour out any enemies in front of us!"
"I can feel none so far," the blind girl replied as she started running in front of the group, Sokka following shortly behind with (Y/n) in his arms.
"Hold on, (Y/n)," Sokka thought to himself as the group made it out of the building.
-----------------------------
A soft surface under her. That's the first thing (Y/n) noticed when she started to regain consciousness. The second thing the girl felt was a calloused hand clutching her own. A finger slowly and gently ghosted over the hand and she felt the hand tighten.
(Y/n) turned her head to the side where the hand was coming from and started to slowly blink her eyes open, squinting a bit when the hospital room's bright light burned her eyes. But nonetheless, the firebender noticed the dark skin of the hand holding her's and looked up.
The girl felt warmth spread through her chest when she realized that Sokka had come to visit her and fell asleep. (Y/n) slowly wiggled her hand out of his grasp and gently traced his face with the back of her hand, making the boy groan in his sleep and the hand clutching her's previously grabbing her wrist.
"Mmmm, what?" the water tribe boy blinked as he took in his surroundings and with sleep clouded eyes looked at (Y/n), still clutching her wrist gently.
After a brief pause, his eyes widened and a large grin appeared on his face when he had regained enough consciousness.
"You're awake!" Sokka exclaimed happily and dived in the bed to hug the girl, "Holy shit, you're awake!"
"Slow down, water boy!" (Y/n) wheezed out as she slightly pushed at Sokka's chest, "You're suffocating me!"
"Sorry!" the boy quickly apologized before looking the firebender over to see if he had hurt her accidentally.
"It's fine, I'm fine," the girl laughed and Sokka's cheeks gained a reddish tint to them.
After a brief pause, the boy shook his head, the warmth from his face disappearing before his brows furrowed and he stared angrily at the girl in front of him.
"Why the hell would you think it was a good idea to try to stop the Fire Nation soldiers on your own!" Sokka scolded the firebender, "It was absolutely reckless and stupid, and-"
"Well, what else was I supposed to do?" (Y/n) angrily replied, "Allow them to capture us all? "
"You were supposed to stay safe!" the water tribe boy pressed.
"Since when was saving the world from the Fire Nation ever safe?" the firebender questioned.
"What I meant was that you were supposed to not get hurt," Sokka explained himself, "You placed yourself in unnecessary danger and you got hurt because of it."
"Since when do you care that I get hurt?" (Y/n) tsked.
"Since I found out that I love you," the words slipped out of Sokka's mouth and the girl's eyes widened in shock.
"You.. love me?" She cautiously questioned.
"Yeah, I do," he sighed, bowing his head and waiting for rejection, "Look I know you don't feel the same way, but I wanted you to know so th-"
Sokka never managed to complete his sentence as (Y/n)'s lips locked on to her former rival's. The boy tensed before slowly relaxing and leaning into the kiss. The girl's lips started to pull back, but the water tribe boy dived back in for another kiss.
No way was he gonna let her go now.

Secret Mission
Zuko leaves on a mission with Sokka without telling.
He expects to be. welcomed with open arms when he returns, but you have other plans for him.
I think I read a fic in the past that inspired me for this one!
It’s been two weeks since Sokka and Zuko left on their secret mission. It wasn’t really a secret on what they were doing but the fact that they left without telling anyone was what made it a secret.
Azula’s ships were spotted two mountains down from the campsite and Zuko knew she was carrying heavy explosives for the war. Him and Sokka were adamant on tracking her ships and destroying the explosives, but they all knew that her ships were heavily guarded.
“Look, we don’t even know if the explosives are actually on the ship!” Katara argued. “No, I do know! I was there when they were planning the transaction!” Zuko paced around the camp.
“I agree with Zuko, it could make a huge difference for the war!” Sokka joined Zuko standing up as well. “Knowing Azula she probably changed her plans since you betrayed her.” You stated as you sat near the campfire because you were cold. “But what if she didn’t because she knew she’d be heavily guarded?!”
“That’s exactly my point! It’s too risky for the just a possibility that the explosives are on those ships!” Katara rolled her eyes at her brother. “THEY ARE ON THOSE SHIPS!” Zuko yelled back.
“Katara’s right. It was such a close call last time...I say we should wait it out.” Aang stated as he fumbled with air between his hands. Two weeks ago, Katara and Aang were trying to infiltrate one of Ozai’s camps to get information on their war plans, but Ozai hired extra mercenaries to protect the camp, which almost got them caught.
“That settles it. We’re not going.” Katara stated and headed back to her tent. The rest did too except you and Zuko. You sighed watching him slump on the floor in defeat. Zuko’s been struggling on his place in the group. He still feels like he has to prove he’s on their side and that he was useful. He never told you that, but you could tell it eats him up inside.
It’s been four months since you both were “officially” together after your failed friends with benefits run.
It was great being out in the open, you didn’t have to hide your affection towards each other, and you had more clarity on your relationship. You were honest and knew each other to the deepest core of who you both were. Although, neither of you could never rest when one was out on a mission while the other was back at camp, worrying on what could happen.
The time you and Katara went to steal food from a fire nation camp, Zuko stayed up all night until both of you returned. You remember seeing his shoulders slump in relief as you walked towards him, you simply winked carrying a crate of food, which he then took from you to carry, then placed a long kiss on your forehead. When him and Aang went to search for the fire bending masters you couldn’t sleep till he returned and jumped at him when he entered your now shared tent.
“Zuko.” You sighed as you sat next to him and leaned your head on his shoulder. He didn’t respond but continued staring at the fire. “Zuko, it’s too dangerous...and knowing Azula, she probably changed her plans with the explosives.”
“I know they’re there. I just know it.” he said through gritted teeth.
“Come on, it’s late. We should get some sleep.”
“You go ahead, I just need to think about some stuff.” You stared at him with a worried expression, but he immediately kissed you on the lips as a form of reassurance. You smiled then left. That was the last you saw him before he and Sokka took off on Appa.
2 weeks later, they still hadn’t shown up and the gang was getting nervous. Aang tried to hide it but he spent his mornings pacing around. Katara would stare at sky hoping for signs of Appa, so did Sukki, Toph would throw boulders while at first you wanted to try to find them, but had no idea where they were, would spend your days around the forest hunting and gathering food to distract yourself.
You were all laid out on the floor when suddenly Suki sat up. “Guys, I hear something.”
“So?” Toph scoffed, “No, it’s coming from above!” Suki jumped on her feet. “Yeah right.” You rolled your eyes, there were so many close calls thinking Sokka and Zuko were flying home that you didn’t want any false sense of hope that you’d see him again.
“NO SHE’S RIGHT IT’S APPA!” Aang ran towards you then fell in excitement. Your heart stopped, could it really be them? You sat up and stared at the sky. It was Appa. And you saw two figures on his back, Sokka and Zuko.
“YIPEEEE!” Aang danced around on an air ball. As soon as Appa landed Katara ran to Sokka and hugged him, so did Suki. Aang was next and squished both Sokka and Zuko in a huge hug and Toph high fived them both. Zuko laughed at all the attention then looked at you with a huge grin expecting you to run up to him as well, which automatically dropped when he saw your angry face.
“GUYS I’M SO HAPPY!” Aang continued to dance around the two. “Me too, but that was SO stupid!” Katara placed her hands on her hips. “Well...guess who destroyed two of Azula’s ships including all the explosives?” Sokka gloated as he strutted around the fire.
“NO WAY! I should have gone!” Toph stomped her foot on the ground which made the earth shake. “So there were explosives on the ships...” Katara blushed in embarrassment. “Told you.” Zuko said, but he was still looking at you with worry in his eyes.
“What took two weeks though?” Suki asked as she plopped herself on Sokka’s lap. “Okay, so good news, all the explosives were gone, bad news was we were captured after.”
“WHAT?!” the rest of you shouted in unison.
“BUT! We escaped and torched the Fire Nation camp that captured us.” Sokka winked.
“Sokka! That is so DANGEROUS! You two could have gotten killed!” Katara was yelling in Sokka’s face. “But we DIDN’T! And now we have a higher chance of winning the war.” Sokka smirked.
Katara and Sokka continued to argue while you and Zuko just stared at each other, both not knowing what to do. Obviously, you were happy he was back and safe but so angry he left and didn’t tell you. A few moments passed and you decided you needed some space.
“Well, I’m glad you both are safe.” You stated and walked into the woods. The gang became quiet and Zuko looked like he saw a ghost. “Uhm, I’m sorry man, but...you’re smoked.” Sokka shrugged and Katara hit him. “OW!”
You needed to be alone for a bit so you were taking your usual walk in the forest, forgetting for a bit that the trail was the same one you and Zuko took every night.
“Y/N!” you heard footsteps running behind from you, but you kept walking. “Hey, come on.” He placed his arm on your shoulder, so you turned around.
You looked at him with painful eyes and he softened his grip on you. “What’s wrong?” he placed his arms on your shoulders.
Both of you stood there for a bit, him waiting for you to say something, trying to read you. Suddenly, your soft expression turned into a hard one and you slapped Zuko right across the face.
He stumbled back grabbing his cheek that was now slightly pink. “WH-WHAT WAS THAT FOR?!”
“DON’T YOU EVER DO THAT AGAIN!” You yelled and continued walking. “DO WHAT?” Zuko followed you but now he was mad as well. “LEAVE!”
“I had to leave! Those explosives could have hurt hundreds of people, and we destroyed a fire nation camp as well.” He tried to explain himself but you kept walking away from him.
“I was right, wasn’t I? The explosives were on those ships!”
“That’s not the point Zuko!” you raised your arms in exasperation. “We destroyed the explosives that would be used against us! How could you be mad about that?!”
“That’s not why I’m mad!” you rolled your eyes even though he couldn’t see you. “Then why don’t you tell me instead of us wandering around here like idiots!”
“Y/N, will you please stop walking!” Zuko groaned in annoyance.
“No.”
“You’re impossible.” Zuko growled but still continued to follow you. “Then go back to camp!”
“No, I’m not leaving till we fix this.” You could hear a bit of desperation in his voice.
“Then too bad.”
“Y/N, we did what had to be done! It’s not like we left for no reason!”
“You really don’t get it, do you Zuko?” You stopped walking then looked at him, clearly he was clueless. “No, because you won’t tell me!” you sighed then gave up.
“You could have told me you were leaving!” You pleaded for him to understand but you could tell he wasn’t getting what you were trying to say. “It was my choice and you would have told me not go.” he said through gritted teeth.
“Yes but I would have known where you were.”
“What difference would that make? I still would have gone.” There was a pang in your heart because Zuko still had no idea what it was like wondering if he was alive every single day.
“Zuko...do you know what it was like waking up and you were gone. Not knowing if you were alright, if you were captured or or—“ tears started to trickle down your face. Zuko’s eyes widened and his hard expression quickly turned to softness and worry. The only time Zuko’s ever seen you cry was when you received news that your childhood home was burned down in the Fire Nation as they considered your father a traitor. The truth was, he was like Zuko, he knew what they were doing was wrong and left.
“You just left...without telling me...and I wondered everyday, every night, if you were okay and just hoped that I’d see you sleeping next to me somehow and that this was all just a bad dream.”
“Y/N I—“
“What if you died, Zuko?!”
“I didn’t—“
“But you could have and I’d be here...not knowing what even happened to you!”
“Y/N, I didn’t mean to hurt you.” His eyes were pleading and you could see the remorse in his face.
“Do I mean that little to you?” Zuko’s face dropped and he instantly walked towards you and grabbed your face.
“Y/N...you mean everything to me.” He whispered as he caressed your face. “Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“I-I thought it would be better...because you wouldn’t know what we were doing, so you wouldn’t feel guilty if anything happened...” he looked down, realizing how wrong he was. Zuko suddenly remembered all the times you went on a mission without him and how helpless he felt that he wasn’t there to protect you. He’d spend days with no sleep, pacing around the camp while looking for any sign of you returning. “It wasn’t better! Even if I didn’t like what you were doing but at least have the compassion to tell me!” you tried to pull away from his grasp, but he held on tighter.
“I know... I wasn’t thinking. I was just so sure I was right and I knew it would make a huge difference and I just wanted to—“
“You just wanted to prove you deserve to be on Aang’s side.” You finished and Zuko nodded slowly. Zuko was always skeptical if the team really trusted him, especially due to the fact that he used to chase them around trying to capture Aang.
“Zuko, it’s been months. Everyone trusts you and respects you, remember we’re on the same boat here, I’m from the Fire Nation too, you know.”
“I do...it’s just, I did horrible things to them. I always feel like I have to make up for it.” he turned away from you. “Zuko, you don’t have to make up for anything, I’m so proud of you for all that you’ve done, and how much you’ve changed. I just thought I had a bigger place in your life for you to tell me.”
“You are the biggest part of my life, Y/N. Don’t ever doubt that.” he cupped your face with his hands once more. “I’m so sorry I ever made you feel that way, it was selfish and—“
“And I’m so proud of how brave you are...it just scares me sometimes that you could just be gone...”
“Don’t you think I feel the same way when you’re out on missions?”
“At least you know where I’m going.” You smirked and he sighed but laughed after.
“I’m sorry, I should have been more considerate.” You smiled lightly. “But don’t ever think you mean little to me. You’re the only good thing in my life.” He kissed you on your forehead and you melted into his arms.

Zuko~A Heart Of Change
A lot had happened in the past few days- and it was almost enough to distract you from the bigger picture. With Zuko and Aang learning the true source of fire bending, and Sokka to rescuing Suki and his dad (with Zuko's help), you'd almost forgotten what was inevitably coming for you. Your previous actions had consequences. And, where consequences and revenge were involved, Azula wasn't far behind. (If you were being honest, you were surprised she didn't find you earlier.)
     What didn't surprise you, however, was how ready she was. She came prepared: a taunting expression on her face, and a fleet of air ships behind her, she launched her attack on the Western Air Temple. You couldn't fight them all at once, not even with Avatar right now. Fleeing safely was your main priority. If you had any hope of defeating the Fire Lord before that comet, Aang needed to master fire bending- and you needed to make it out of here alive.
    You look over at Zuko and recognise a look in his eyes. Zuko had never backed down from a fight- especially with his sister. And, now you were worried what he would do next.
    "We have to go now, Zuko," you plead, "It's not worth fighting her if it means we don't get out of here alive."
    Zuko glanced at you and then back at his sister. He had to do something: letting his sister get the best of him again didn't sit right with him. He hated feeling helpless. Besides, a distraction was needed to get out of here. Zuko was happy to provide that.
     "You go with the others," Zuko insisted, "I'm going to distract her, she'll be too busy fighting me to attack you guys."
      You weren't sure about this, but decided to help round up the others anyway.
     Haru began to make a tunnel out of the air bending temple, trying to help the others escape. Aang was doing his best to persuade Appa to follow them through the tunnel, but it wasn't working. Appa was scared of being under ground, especially after he got trapped in the mountain in the Earth Kingdom. You could see that it wasn't working. He would have to fly, even if it wasn't the safer option.
     "This isn't working," Aang says, frustrated, "I'll take Appa and fly."
     "It's too dangerous!" Katara insisted.
     "It's even more dangerous staying here like sitting ducks!" you yell back, over the noise of the airships and the crumbling temple.
      "She's right," Toph says.
      "Haru, take the others to safety through the tunnel," Aang said, "We'll fly to safety on Appa."
      Haru nodded and began to earth bend his way, with the others, through the air bending temple- he closed the tunnel behind him so that they couldn't be followed. Aang watched them go, and then turned back to the gang. They all began to climb onto Appa. Sokka looked behind him, when he realised you and Zuko weren't with the others on Appa. His eyes widened as he watched Zuko jump from the cliff towards the airships and towards his sister- also towards the huge fire balls!
     "What are you doing?" Sokka yelled to you.
     "I have to help him! Zuko needs my help! You lot go ahead- we'll catch up!" you reply, looking away from Sokka towards Zuko, "Besides you guys need a distraction!"
     Aang hesitated looking down at you, but you nodded. He nodded back then told Appa 'yip yip' and the bison began to fly through the collapsing rubble. You watched them fly upwards in an effort to avoid the blasts of fire Azula and her soldier were firing their way. You looked to the edge of the cliff and then to the airships, before taking a running start. Using blasts of fire from your hands, you launch yourself further into the air. Zuko's head turned when he heard the sound of your footsteps running along the crumbling ground. His eyes widened.
     He told you to stay behind!
     This wasn't part of his plan!
     What if you got hurt?
     His mind was racing a million miles an hour, but he tried to stay focused on Azula. He knew she'd use you against him; she was always very aware of his soft spot for you. Even as a child, he'd try and shield you from Azula. She quickly caught on, and from then on enjoyed teasing him about his precious Y/N, and then she'd go onto describe what she'd do to you if she ever caught you alone and unawares. From then on, his effort to keep you away from Azula (even as you grew older and more capable) became even more conscious. That hadn't changed. Even now. Even as you were risking your life for him and the gang. He still feared losing you- especially to his sister.
      "What are you doing here?!" Zuko yelled across the air ships.
      "What does it look like?!" you reply back, "I'm helping you dumbass! This is dangerous- I'm not letting you do it on your own!"
      Zuko tries not to freak out too much, but his attention is immediately drawn away by a large ball of fire heading his way. He dodges it narrowly and jumps to the next air ship. He quickly looks back to you- and luckily you're safe. You acknowledge him with a smile and then slide down the side of the air ship with a blade-like-flame, cutting down the side of the ship. The hull of the ship rips with a severe noise, and you can feel the ship start to spiral down. You use the side of the ship to boost yourself onto the next one.
      Between the two of you, you made quick work of the air ships. It was made ever more difficult, though, with the interference of Azula. She was a powerful bender, even at such a young age. And, with the top tier training she'd received in the heart of the fire nation, with the nation's greatest fire benders, it was no surprise that she was putting up quite a fight.
     "I don't think we can last much longer," you shouted over to Zuko, "We need to get out of here!"
     "Where's Aang?" Zuko agreed.
     "Up there," you pointed.
     "We're going to have to j-"
     Before Zuko could finish the word 'jump', you were both forced off the side of the air ship by another powerful ball of fire sent from Azula. In the process she was forced backwards. Luckily, when you were launched off of the ship, Aang was ready with Appa to catch you both. You landed with a thud on Appa's saddle, and looked back.
     "She's not going to make it," Zuko said quietly.
      Azula pulled out her hair pin, and dug it deep into the side of the cliff. Eventually she came to a halt, making eye contact with Zuko as she did.
     "Of course she did."

Things between you and Zuko had been different ever since you escape Azula. In fact, you suspected it started before that. Ever since he'd gone to the Boiling Rock with Sokka, something seemed different. Seemed off. You hadn't even had the chance to talk to him alone, yet. For you, it was only making the situation worse.
     You found yourself sitting alone on the beach. You'd eaten dinner with the others, and then excused yourself. Talk at dinner was lively, but you felt yourself shrink away from it. You hadn't seen Azula since you fled the fire nation; seeing her again was resurfacing old memories. Ones of her and you. Ones of you and Zuko. And, being at this house didn't help. Zuko and Azula used to come here all the time as kids. Sometimes Zuko would invite you. You had good memories here. However, now it felt so empty. You shook your head, trying to clear your thoughts.
     Maybe that's why Zuko was being so strange; maybe he was going through what you were going through. Surely he wasn't having second thoughts about coming here? Or maybe it was just second thoughts about you?
     You were so wrapped up in your thoughts, you barely heard footsteps approaching you.
     "You didn't stay long at dinner," Zuko commented, sitting down beside you.
     You brought your knees up to your chest and sighed.
     "I didn't mean to leave you out there," you murmur, "I just didn't feel like I had much to say, that's all."
     "And, I thought being the moody one was my job," Zuko teases.
     You have a faint smile on your face.
     "You're not moody, you're angsty," you correct, "There's a difference."
     "There's a difference?"
     "Yeah, you're so much more dramatic than moody," you reply.
     Zuko shakes his head. You smile towards him, and he rolls his eyes playfully in response.
     "I'm just teasing," you promise.
    "I know," Zuko says calmly, and then he hesitates before speaking again, "Are you sure you're okay? We haven't talked just us-"
    "-I'm fine, Zuko. It's not... It's not anything serious. I'm just over reacting. I promise."
    Zuko is silent, and in that moment, you take it as a sign for you to continue. You've held it in for so long that you almost can't help to let all your emotions out.
    "It's just I... I feel like we haven't talked in a while. And seeing Azula today, it just brought up old memories. And, this place... I feel like it should be comforting, but its not. It just reminded me of what I don't have any more," you sigh, "I feel like something happened on the Boiling Rock. Something you're not telling me. Not that you have to tell me anything... I didn't want... I'm not trying... I... I don't know I feel like something has changed. Between us. You know what- just ignore me. Forgot what I said."
      You go to get up from where you're sitting, but Zuko puts his hand on yours and you stop.
      "I didn't mean to hide anything from you," Zuko sighed, "I didn't mean to make you feel like this."
      You looked down towards the waves lapping the sand.
      "I saw Mai. I saw Mai on Boiling Rock," Zuko confessed, "And... She saved me-us. She saved us by going against Azula. I've been feeling... Conflicted about it. I'm worried about her- and what Azula has done to her-"
      "-Oh."
       That's all you could say. Part of you felt heart broken because you had pressed so much- Zuko rarely talked about his feelings like this even to you. Part of you felt selfish for thinking the reason he was so distant was because of you. It was Mai. It had always been Mai and it was always be Mai.
     "I'm sure she's alright, Zuko. Her family's high standing will protect her," you say, placing a hand on his shoulder.
      You squeeze it lightly before standing up and walking back towards the house.
     "Wait," Zuko says, running up behind you.
     "I'm going to bed, Zuko," you murmur trying to walk quicker.
     "Y/N, wait, please, I'm not good with words... I don't-"
     "-Don't worry, Zuko. Mai is special. She's special to you," you smile up at him, "I'm happy you've found that."
     "No, that's not what I meant. Y/N, please. Mai is special, but so are you. She's not my special- you're... Ugh, I'm not good with words... I..." Zuko huffs, frustrated.
      You look up at him, confused, "I'm special?"
       "Yes," he nods, "You've always been special to me. More than anyone else. You always have been. I- When I was banished, you came with me; you've always been by my side. Even when I didn't deserve. Even when I didn't deserve you..."
       "Zuko... I..."
       "You don't have to feel the same, but I just want you to-"
       You lean up and press your hand against his cheek. He stops speaking but his lips part before he gently gulps. You look up at him for permission, and he nods. In this moment, he might just agree to anything you asked of him. But, for now, all you ask of him is a kiss. He gladly accepts. You gently place your lips on his, and he kisses back.
      "How long have you felt like this?" you ask him.
     "A life time."
      You smile: so dramatic you think. But, then again, you always did like a bit of dramatic flare in your life.

“what are you doing still up?”
zuko turned around to see you standing, arms crossed as the chilly summer breeze swept through the air. you were offering him a soft smile. he offered one in return, patting the spot on the roof next to him as he turned back to gaze upon the glistening ocean.
as you lowered yourself next to him, he replied simply, “i... had a nightmare.”
you nodded, offering him a sympathetic look as you stared up at the night sky. “do you have nightmares often?”
he let out a humorless laugh. “yeah.” he laid back on the roof, tucking his arms behind his head as he closed his eyes and embraced the breeze again. “they’re not fun.”
“i can imagine,” you said, letting out a stiff giggle as you rubbed your arms in a lame attempt to warm yourself up. zuko peeked an eye open and sat back up.
“are you cold?”
you shook your head with a small smile. “no, im alright.” he peeled his silky robe off anyway. “no, zuko-”
“i can produce my own heat, y/n,” he chuckled, placing the material over your shoulders. you smiled as he laid back down, slipping your arms into the oversized fire robe. “so why are you awake?”
you shrugged, leaning your chin against your propped up knees. “couldn’t sleep.”
“i get it,” zuko offered with a sigh, closing his eyes again. you closed yours, as well. you both embraced the silence of that night, allowing the breeze to continue it’s way through the night air as the waves crashed upon the distant shore.
after a few minutes of just enjoying the night together, you smiled to yourself. “remember when we first met?”
you looked over to him as he offered a small smile, opening his eyes to look up at you. “unfortunately.” you laughed.
“it wasn’t that bad!”
“it was awful!” he countered, sitting up as you laughed harder.
“that’s not how i remember it!” you defended.
“alright, then how do you remember it?”
you hummed. “well, once upon a time i was hanging around with this band of super cool hooligans, right?”
“sure.”
“and they had told me all about this fire prince guy who they deemed ‘pretty awful’ and ‘lowkey crazy’.” he arched an eyebrow at you. “don’t be offended,” you waved. “they said much worse than that. anyway!” he hit your arm lightly. “anyway! i was kinda hoping i wouldn’t get to meet this guy, seeing how much the people i trusted really didn’t trust him. and then this really strange thing happened.”
“did it?”
“it did,” you nodded with a goofy smile. you brushed a piece of hair behind your ear and continued, “we had set up camp, and then it was attacked!”
“no way.”
“that’s what i was thinking! some super scary firebenders came out of nowhere and started attacking us and demanding the avatar. it was wild. but then, while we were fighting, this guy with a super sick scar came up to me.”
“and then what?” zuko asked.
“well, i was so terrified that the only thing i could think to say was, ‘you must be aang’s stalker! nice to meet you!’ and then i did a super sick earth move and sprinted away.”
“that was... surprisingly accurate,” zuko nodded. you laughed, bumping his shoulder with yours.
“how do you remember it?”
“well, i was attacking the band of hooligans.”
“naturally.”
“yeah,” he chuckled, giving you an amused glance before looking down to his lap. “and i was looking around for this kid i had been hunting down for a while, but instead i just got to see this random girl.”
“funny, how those things work.”
he nodded. “at first, i thought she was just some innocent bystander that was in the wrong place at the wrong time. and then she turned to me. she looked extremely off-guard. and then she shot this totally weird remark at me, did a kick-flip that sent earth flying everywhere except for at me, and ran off.”
you nodded. “this chick sounds awesome.”
zuko gave you a smile. “well, she didn’t attack me, which was kinda lame.”
you scoffed. “what if she was trying to protect that pretty face of yours, stalker boy?”
“pretty face?” zuko teased, giving you an amused look.
“you heard me!”
he looked back toward the ocean with a hum. “then i guess that’s pretty awesome of her.” he placed his hands behind him to lean back, but one brushed yours in the process. you were about to move it away with an apology, when he instead took it into his own.
you gave him a surprised look, but he continued looking forward. you suppressed a huge grin as you scooted closer to the fire prince, leaning your head on his shoulder as you watched the waves crash down on the sandy shore. you had never felt more warm.

All prisoners mingled in the yard, where Sokka, Suki, Hakoda, Zuko and you finally met. “This is it! We have to start a riot,” Sokka said. His father claimed to be fit for the task, trying to get another prisoner angry by shoving him, but failed. “This isn’t working,” His son stated. But then Chit Sang appeared behind him, putting a hand on his shoulder. “Hey you! You’re lucky I didn’t rat you out,” He smiled. “but my generosity comes with a price. I know you’re planning another escape attempt, and I want in,” You raised a brow at him, but turned to Sokka when he had this certain look in his eye. He had an idea. “Actually, we’re trying to escape right now, but we need a riot. You wouldn’t happen to know how to start one, would you?” The man huffed. “A prison riot? Please,” He grabbed another prisoner, lifting him up in the air and lifting him up and down. “Hey! Riot!” And the people started chanting. “Riot! Riot! Riot!” And several blasts of fire went off. Hakoda looked shocked for a moment, before mumbling to himself. “Impressive,”
“Good, we have a riot, now all we need to do is grab the warden, and get to the gondolas!” Sokka said, pointing above. “And how do we do that?” Zuko asked from beside you. “I’m not sure,” The prince groaned at that. “I thought you thought this through!” “I thought you told me it’s okay not to think everything through!” “Maybe not everything, but this is kind of important!” He rubbed his forehead, while you looked between them, wondering if you should interrupt or let them solve it on their own. Eventually Chit Sang took the descision off your shoulders. “Hey, uh, fellas. I think your girlfriend’s taking care of it,” Your heads turned, as he pointed towards Suki, who hopped on the heads of the rioters, before jumping and flipping onto the tower. You all started running to get to her, while she easily defeated the first guard with a few quick jabs, taking out the rest of them with the same ease and finally grabbing the warden. Once you arrived, completely out of breath, Suki had already gagged him with his headband. “We’ve got the warden! Now let’s get out of here!” She said, and Hakoda raised his brows. “That’s some girl!” Sokka smiled proudly. “Tell me about it,”
“Come on guys, we’ve got to go!” You said, maing a run for the gondola. “We’re almost there!” You heard Suki call out from behind you, but already more guards we’re trying to stop your group. “Back off! We’ve got the warden!” You heard Zuko from behind you, and as you turned your head you could see him block the flames from the guards. “Let’s go!” You arrived at the door first, ripping it open. “Everyone in!” Suki said, jumping in. Once the group was complete, Zuko started the gondola, kicking the handle a few times, trying to break it. The guards rushed towards him, blasting fire, as he tried to reach you. “Zuko!” you yelled as he jumped. You leaned out of it’s window, gripping his hand tightly. You groaned upon lifting his whole weight, trying to get him up. Luckily, Sokka was there to help him, dragging him inside where he landed right on top of you with a gasp. “We’re on our way!” Suki cheered, while the two of you stared at each other, before quickly getting up. You avoided his gaze, reminded of the kiss you’d almost shared in the cooler. The atmosphere between you sizzled and hissed like a fire. You could only hope that the flames weren’t high enough to alert the others. The only thing that would resolve in, is endless teasing. He knew that as well as you did. And yet you could feel his burning stare at your profile. “Wait! Who’s that?” Hakoda, Sokka and Suki were all staring out of the windows. As the two of you joined them, you spotted new faces appearing on the platform. And to your dismay, you knew exactly who they were. “That’s a problem. It’s my sister and her friend,” You huffed, barely able to imagine that someone as vile as Azula could have any genuine friends. Looking up at your group, the princess snatched a pair of handcuffs froma guard’s belt and ran forward. Meanwhile Ty Lee jumped onto the cable, running along. After elevating herself to the line below her friend with a fire blast, Azula used the cuffs to attach herself to it and propelled herself forward.
“This is a rematch I’ve been waiting for,” Suki said in a determined tone, a grim look in her face. “Me too,” Zuko rasped, turning his head to look at you. You gave him a brief nod. Then you began climbing onto the roof with Sokka and Suki. Once she was within reach, Ty Lee flipped into the air, lading right in front of the Kyoshi Warrior, who growled and assumed a battle-ready position. Azula on the other hand, pulled herself up on the roof, facing her brother and the Water Tribe boy. You got caught up in the middle, switching your sight between both sides. The princess took her stance, performing a kick sending blue fire at her opponents, but Zuko blocked it. Now Ty Lee got active as well, trading blows with Suki. Your friend was able to block most of her hits, but soon you saw an opening in her defense, the circus girl was ready to take. You formed a whip of fire around you, lashing it into her direction and forcing her to the edge. “Thanks,” Suki grinned, before refocusing, once Ty Lee came back out on the other side. Behind you the two royal sibling were wildly blasting fire at each other, only barely interrupted by Sokka who managed to draw Azula back to the edge with his sword. As you turned, you could see Zuko going for a finishing blow, but his sister dodged, staying on the gondola and responding with a huge blast so wide, that it would’ve reached Suki and Ty Lee, had you not blocked it with your own.
But then the gondola started rocking back and forth, causing Sokka to lose his balance. He slid to the edge, which had Zuko sprinting to his rescue and Azula casting another blow. You covered the boys as they got back up, while ty Lee jumped up to the top of the wire, to see what was going on. “They’re about to cut the line!” And as the guards worked to stop your escape, you noticed another gondola approaching behind you, heading inbound. And apparently, so did Azula. “Then it’s time to leave,” She smirked, blasting herself up in the air. “Goodbye, Zuko,” She simpered, reaching the opposite rooftop. Ty Lee backflipped, landing next to her, but looked back at you with concern in contrast to Azula’s sadistic smile, much to your surprise. “The gondola’s about to go!” Zuko confirmed and Hakoda rubbed his neck. “I hope this thing floats,” You nibbled on your bottom lip, brows furrowing in concern. There was nothing you could do to stop them from here. You were completely out of reach. As you looked to your right you could see the gears in Zuko’s head turn, mulling over the possibility of a solution, just as you were, but then... then it continued in motion!
”Who’s that?” Sokka asked, leaning out of a window, as everyone joined him. Back down on the platform was a girl. A girl with raven hair and a red robe. “It’s Mai!” Zuko’s shock was evident on his face and a shiver ran down your spine. The daughter of a Fire Nation General and the princes former lover was helping you escape? But why? And by the look of your team mates, you weren’t the only one wondering about her intentions. You shook your head, banning the negative thoughts from your head, as you reached the top of the hill. “Well, we made it out. Now what?” Suki questioned and looked at Sokka, who noticed Zuko standing still. “Zuko, what are you doing?” He mumbled a response. “My sister was on that island.” “Yeah, and she’s probably right behind us, so let’s not stop!” Zuko shook his head. “What I mean is she must have come here somehow,” Your eyes widened in understanding and you joined him, walking up a hill by the sea. “There!” You pointed a finger, eyes lighting up. “That’s our way out of here!”
All of you reached the Western Air Temple by nightfall. Zuko, Sokka and you exited the ship first, once it was returned, where Toph, Katara and Aang already waited for you. “What are you doing in this thing? What happened to the war balloon?” Katara asked as soon as she spotted you. You bit your bottom lip, rubbing your arm. “It kinda got destroyed,”
“Sounds like a crazy fishing trip,” Aang smiled, holding his staff, before Toph chimed in. “Did you at least get some good meat?” Now a soft smile appeared on Sokka’s face. Sweet enough to make the corners of your own lips curl. “I did. The best meat of all. The meat of friendship and fatherhood,” He spoke as Suki, Hakoda and Chit Sang came out. “I’m new. What’s up, everybody?” The man said, waving. Katara teared up, overjoyed to be surrounded by her entire family once again. “Dad?” She ran to embrace him. “Hi, Katara,”
“How are you here? What is going on? Where did you go?” She rambled the next second, making you laugh, while Sokka grew sheepish. “We kind of went to a Fire Nation prison,” Hakoda pulled him into the hug, holding both of them close. “Seriously? You guys didn’t find any meat?” Toph complained, pouting slightly. Inching towards her, you wrapped your arms around her shoulders from behind, resting your chin on her head. “Don’t worry, sweet cheeks. We’ll get you your meat,”

         What’s A Date Without Some Adventure?
    Aang was completely and utterly in love with you. It was a deeper and truer love than he’d ever experienced before. He knew now that his love for Katara has been a child’s crush, a product of being a young starry eyed kid. Not that Katara wasn’t lovable or that he still wasn’t starry eyed. It was just different now that he was older.
   Aang had met you after the war. He had been somewhat lost after defeating Ozai. His purpose had been fulfilled, and all of his other friends had gone off to find their own purposes. Aang had decided to do the only thing that made sense and traveled, looking for any place he could lend a helping hand.
   Your village was one of the first he had come to. It had been nearly destroyed by the war, and your people were desperately trying to repair it. Aang had a good feeling about helping, something in his spirit told him that this was an important place for him. Appa landed right outside of the village, and Aang had instructed his friend to stay there. Using his glider, he had bended himself right into the center of town, and right to you.
   There was a fire blazing in one of the buildings. The villagers had been desperately trying to keep it contained to the one building, as they tried to fight it. You were front and center, giving orders and commands. Aang had been instantly taken with you, and the fierce determination on your face as you lead your people.
   Aang had been so transfixed by you, that he hadn’t noticed the young girl trapped inside the burning building. In fact, it was your horrified expression that alerted him. Before he had even had time to act, you were rushing in yourself. Aang instantly jumped into action, trying to follow you. By the time he got to the top window, you were already there, tying a cloth around the girl’s nose.
    You had locked eyes with Aang, and recognition seemed to pass over your features. His stomach had fluttered at the idea of you knowing who he was.
    “Ana, go with him. He’s the Avatar, he’ll get you down safely.” You had told the little girl.
   Aang had quickly taken the little girl down to her waiting parents. After making sure she was ok, he turned to come back for you. He had heard the building cracking, signaling that it was about to fall, and there you stood at the window’s ledge. You locked eyes with him, and then you jumped.
   Aang got to you in no time, cradling you in his arms as you both landed.
    “Good catch!” You had told him breathlessly.
  And that had been it for him.
   Aang had cultivated a deep friendship with you as the years went on. He had begged you to accompany him on his travels, and you had accepted. Together, you made a huge difference in the world. Appa, Momo, and the rest of the Gaang all loved you. Even Toph, who didn’t particularly like anybody, thought you were amazing.
   Aang knew he couldn’t deny his feelings for you any longer. He wanted to ask you out, but he knew it had to perfect. You deserved perfect. He just didn’t know where to start. This week you guys were going to the Peace celebration, hosted by Ba Sing Se. All of his friends were going to be there, and he could think of no better time to ask you out. All he needed was a plan.
           ———————————————-
    Aang’s plan was simple. You loved flying, and there were really pretty sunsets over Ba Sing Se. Aang decided he would take you up on Appa at sunset, and confess his feelings to you then.
    When Aang asked you to go flying with him later that day, you enthusiastically agreed, throwing your arms around him and kissing his cheek. Aang blushed for the next few hours as he tried to make sure everything was perfect.
    You showed up looking prettier than anyone ever had the right to. Your hair hung loosely over your shoulders, and you had been wearing a beautiful emerald green dress with golden arm bands. The color was perfect on you, and Aang could hardly form words or coherent thoughts as you approached.
     “Let’s blow this joint!” You said by way of greeting. Aang watched starstruck as you hopped up on Appa and looked back down at him.
   “Coming?” You asked, eyes sparkling in the evening light.
    Aang nodded dumbly, and then climbed up after you like a puppy.
    The night went well. You cooed over the sunset, and the colors had bathed you in a soft light. Aang opened his mouth to tell you his feelings when you interrupted.
    “Aang, what is that?” You pointed down at something. A beam of light was shooting towards you guys. Aang sat puzzled for a minute, and then it clicked.
    “Firework!” He cried. Appa got the hint, and dodged just before the thing exploded. Appa weaved through the various fireworks and managed to get you all to safety. You both had soot on your faces, and your hair was messed up from the sharp dives Appa took.
   You and Aang just stared at each other for a minute in shock, and then you started laughing.
   “Wow!” You said when you finished. “That was kind of awesome.” You had a beautiful grin on your face, that made Aang smile too.
    “Yeah..” he said. “Awesome.”
    “Next time we do that, let’s not try to get blown up.” You laughed. “But it does kind of remind you of how we first met doesn’t it?”
    You eyes were soft in the starlight, and Aang had felt himself melt. He should have said it, but he just couldn’t. It wasn’t perfect.
          ——————————————-
   Aang went to Sokka next. Sokka was like a brother to him, and anytime Aang had ever needed advice, it was Sokka he sought out.
   Aang burst into Sokka’s room bright and early the next morning, ready to come up with a plan. Sokka was snoring, and drool collected on his pillow.
    “Sokka wake up!” Aang yelled. He didn’t have time to wait patiently for Sokka to wake up. He needed a plan now!
    Sokka jerked awake and screamed.
    “Aang! What are you doing?!” Sokka cried, pulling the sheets over his body to cover himself. Aang rolled his eyes.
    “Sokka I need your help, it’s about y/n!” He said, and bounced up and down on the balls of his feet.
    “Oh I see.” Sokka said. His face changed from anger to a smug grin. “You’ve come to Ol’ Sokka for some advice on the ladies.” Aang rolled his eyes at the way Sokka pronounced “ladies” as “laydays.”
    “I tried to ask y/n out yesterday, but it didn’t go so well, and I want it to be perfect!” Aang cried.
    “Oh Aang. You’ve come to the right place my friend.” Sokka patted the spot beside him on the bed. Aang sat, shoulders slumped.
    “Aang, let me tell you a little thing about the ladies. They love food!”
      Sokka’s plan was a picnic. It seemed simple enough, and Aang had seen the perfect spot when you had flown in. There was a large tree on a grassy hill that looked inviting and romantic. Aang packed up the food and flew it out on Appa to set up.
    Aang whisked you away on Appa with the excuse of a fun lunch. Everything had gone according to plan. The food had been good, Aang had been coherent enough to keep up a normal conversation. All was well. Again, Aang built up the courage to ask you.
    “Y/n...” and then it started pouring.
     You all were soaked by the time you got back, and you were shivering.
     “Too bad about the rain. That was really fun!” You said. You stood there for a second longer waiting for Aang to say something, but he stomped off, huffing. If he hadn’t been so frustrated he would’ve seen the way you deflated as he left.
     He should’ve known not to take advice from Sokka. What did he know about girls anyways? It’s time he asked Katara.
        ———————————————-
    The next morning, Aang woke up determined to find Katara and get some real advice. He stalked through the hallways, on a mission. He remembered that Katara always practiced her bending in the mornings. You intercepted Aang in the hallway.
     “Morning, Aang. Would you like to-“ you started to ask.
    “Sorry, I can’t!” He said quickly. “I’ve gotta practice bending with Katara!”
     Aang again missed your sad face as he hurried away.
     Katara was practicing her bending like Aang had expected, and he quickly interrupted her.
     “Katara I need your help!” Aang launched into the full story, and caught Katara up to speed on what was going on.
     “So you see, Sokka’s idea didn’t work and now I need your help!”
     “You went to Sokka for advice before me?” Katara asked hurt.
     “Ugh, Katara please!” Aang practically shouted.
     “Alright fine. Hmmm.” Katara said, one hand on her hip. “Oh I know! You should take her on a boat ride! Girls think that’s really romantic!”
      “Katara that’s perfect!” Aang said, throwing his arms around her. “Thanks!” Again, he failed to see you watching them outside the window.
      It was surprisingly easy to find someone with a boat, and Aang had you all out in the middle of the water by mid-afternoon. It was calm, and he was convinced that this time nothing could go wrong.
     He noticed that you looked less excited than usual, and he started to feel insecure.
    “Aang, are you in love with Katara?” You asked him hesitantly.
     “With Katara?? No!” Aang said, laughing hysterically. It came out more panicked than truthful, and you began to read into it.
     “It’s ok if you are.” You whispered softly.
     “No no! Seriously, I don’t love anyone! Psh!” He said.
      “Oh.” You said, face falling. Aang instantly wanted to take back what he said, but then you changed the subject.
     “Aang what are those people doing?” You questioned. You pointed in the direction of a boat not too far away from you. The people on board were waving their hands and shouting.
      “I think they’re saying hi.” Aang said, and as soon as he did, a giant sea serpent shot out of the water. Aang jumped into action, using his bending to get you away from the monster.
     You all barely managed to make it to shore in one piece.
     “Ugh!” Aang cried. “Let’s just go home.”

     Zuko was the next person Aang sought out for help. Zuko had been in a long term relationship with Mai for some time. He clearly had to know how to ask a girl out.
    Zuko was at Iroh’s tea shop when Aang found him.
    “Zuko! I really need your help.” He said, out of breath from running.
    Zuko listened stoically as Aang explained his troubles.
    “I need you!” Aang begged when he finished. “No one else has been able to help!”
    Zuko sat in thoughtful silence for a long time, and then answered.
    “If you ever tell Mai this, I’ll kill you.” He warned. Aang nodded eagerly so he continued.
    “Once Uncle forced me to go on a date here, and there was a really pretty fountain that lights up at night. My date kissed me there. You may have to light it with your firebending though. The lights didn’t work on their own.” Zuko says thoughtfully.
    “Thank you!” Aang cheered, and rushed off in the direction of the fountain to check it out.
    That night, you were nearly asleep when Aang tapped on your window.
    “Aang?” You ask him.
   His heart was instantly in his throat as he took you in. You were sleepy and rumpled, but so so beautiful. His heart stuttered, and skipped a beat as his brain tried to remember what he was doing there.
   “Y/n! Up for a little late night adventure?” He asked, holding out his hand.
    You looked hesitant, but ultimately you nodded.
   “Let me change really fast.” You said, hurrying back into your room.
    Aang blushed and turned around to give you some privacy. Your tap to his shoulder nearly made him fall off of the window ledge.
   “Ready?” He managed to ask you, swallowing hard. It just wasn’t fair that you were so beautiful.
    “Ready!” You said, smiling widely.
     Your walk through the streets of Ba Sing Se was beautiful. Streetlights casted a hazy, yellow glow over everything, and Aang was really starting to believe that Zuko nailed it.
     When you arrived at the fountain, everything was dark. Zuko had been right about needing to start the lights then.
     “Close your eyes.” Aang said, winking at you.
     You did as he told you, and covered your eyes waiting.
     Aang quickly threw a few balls of fire at the lights, casting the pond in a beautiful glow.
     “Ok open!” Aang said proudly, arms open wide.
     “Oh my!” You said. Aang was confused about the horrified expression on your face. He turned around to see what you were looking at.
    A banner had been hung off of one of the lights and was burning.
    Aang quickly doused the fire with waterbending, and the tatters of the charred banner floated to the ground.
     There was nothing to say as Aang doused the remaining lights and lead you back home.
      —————————————————-
     Toph was the last person Aang considered going to for advice about love, but now she was all he had left. Aang found Toph under a shady tree on the back lawn. Her toes were digging into the ground, and she was lazily tapping a foot.
    “Twinkle toes.” She nodded in his direction.
   “Toph!” He started.
    “Save it. I know just what you need to do.” Toph said. “A girl like y/n enjoys the wild things in life. You need to take her to earthbending fight. She’d love it.”
     Aang thought this over. He didn’t really know what was romantic about bending, but at this point there wasn’t much else he could do to screw it up further.
    “Ok, maybe you’re right! Thanks Toph!” Aang said, rushing off to find you.
     You had woken up with a raging headache. Everything was making your head pound.
     Aang knocked on your door, and you winced as the sound reverberated through your skull.
    “Y/n!” Aang said, excitedly. “Wanna come on a walk with me? I know something fun we could do!”
    “Oh, Aang that’s really sweet but...” you started to tell him about your headache.
    “Please!” He begged, giving you the puppy eyes.
    “Alright.” You smiled. You couldn’t say no to him, even with a headache.
   The bending tournament was packed. Everyone was cheering for their favorites, and the air was rife with excitement. However, you weren’t doing so well.
   Every cheer brought on a new wave of nausea and pain, and everything was too bright. Aang was absorbed in the fight, doing his own cheering.  You wanted to be strong for him, because it was obvious that he was enjoying himself, but you just couldn’t handle it any longer.
   “Aang.” You said quietly next to him. Aang turned his attention to you, and was immediately aware something wasn’t right. You were pale, and your cheeks were flushed. Someone close to you booed loudly, and you flinched. Aang understood then what you had tried to tell him this morning. And he had ignored you like a jerk.
    “Oh y/n, come on let’s go!” Aang said, trying to keep his voice low.
    “I’m sorry. I know you were looking forward to coming..” you started apologizing.
    “No seriously, don’t worry about it y/n. I’m so sorry, you tried to tell me.” Aang winced.
    “It’s ok. I think I’m just going to sleep it off.” You said.
      Dejectedly, Aang hung his head as you left.
      ——————————————————-
    “You all suck!” Aang yelled the next morning at breakfast. Everyone was here eating but you. Aang figured you were still upstairs sleeping off your headache.
     “I tried every single one of your suggestions, and every single one failed. Every. Single. One.” Aang snapped. He didn’t really mean to project his anger on his friends. He knew that he was the one who messed things up on each date, but still their suggestions hadn’t even been things you would like.
       The group eyed Aang nervously. Katara started shaking her head as if she was trying to tell him something.
    “Aang.” She muttered.
    “I shouldn’t have listened to any of you. All you all did was tell me things that you all wanted to do. I know y/n. She’s funny, kind, and brave. Not to mention beautiful, and I know her better than anyone. All I should’ve done was look her in the eyes and say ‘y/n will you go out with me?’” He finished, pounding his fist into the table for emphasis.
     “Aang?” You said from behind him.
    Aang froze, looking at all of his friends’ faces.
    “We’re just going to go.” Sokka said, grabbing Toph by the elbow and leading her out. Katara and Zuko followed close behind them, and then you two were alone in the kitchen.
    “Aang, did you really mean it?” You asked.
    Aang turned to face you, blush and all. It was time for him to just admit it. Even if you didn’t feel the same, it was time to get it off of his chest.
   “Y/n, I’m sorry.” He said. “This whole week I’ve been trying to ask you to go out with me, but I wanted it to be perfect and I messed it up each time.” He sighed, slumping his shoulders.
     “Aang, why didn’t you tell me?” You asked him.
     “I just wanted it to be perfect.” He said sadly.
    “Aang, you didn’t have to go to any big effort to ask me out. I love you.” You chuckled.
    Aang whipped his head up faster than you thought possible.
    “You love me?” He asked, completely astounded.
    “Of course I do!” You laughed. “And for the record, every single one of those dates was perfect.”
    “But we almost died, and fought a sea monster, and I caught something on fire!” He exclaimed, throwing up his hands.
    “Yes, but you were there and we were together. That’s all I need. And what’s a date without a little adventure?” You said, eyes sparkling.
    Aang didn’t wait a second longer, pulling you into a happy kiss. He was so thrilled that he subconsciously started floating the two of you into the air.
    It felt right, kissing you. Like every dream he’d ever had came true. Aang was so happy he could sing. And you loved him.
    “Y/n!” He said, breaking the kiss. “I love you too! What I said on the boat, I was just trying to say I didn’t love Katara. Obviously I love you-”
    You laughed at his antics, and simply shut him up with another sweet kiss. Aang was truly the happiest man alive. Then a terrifying thought hit. When the time came, how would he ask you to marry him?!
A/n: I’m slowly making my way through these requests. I’m really happy with what I’ve gotten done so far. Make sure to check out my masterlist to read my other work! Requests are open! The Western Air temple
The forest was darker than I thought it be. At these hours I assumed that the sun would be swallowing the green moss but the trees prevented most streaks. I didn't even realize I was running until the trees got more scattered, allowing the sun to peek through. I had no real plan how to find him, I hadn't looked for footprints or broken branches. I was like an impulsive idiot. I just rushed into a forest alone. But I had to find him. I had to confront him. I had to kill him. He opposes a threat to the gang, to Toph. I had underestimated him before, I would not do it again. I gave myself a few seconds to take a breath. I had been running for a good while and was out of breath and covered in sweat. Stupid idiot. As I bent forward to allow air into my lungs I detected something. A sting of smoke sipped through my lungs and burned my throat. A fire. He was close. Now more collected and controlled I sneaked forward. With every step i took i made sure to bend the ground under me so moss swallowed any possible noise my shoe could make. The only thing hearable was the chirping of cardinal birds and the drilling of woodpeckers. The scent of burning wood got closer and closer and I quickened my steps in response. Finally it was so strong I suspected it must be in earth bending distance. I peeked behind the tree in front of me to find a camp. The bonfire was put out but still fervor and the ash was still warm. And Zuko.
He looked exactly the same as yesterday but it still made me halt in my steps. The streaks of suns fighting through the thick branches reached across his face glistening in sweat. His hair still had the morning ruff and his scar seemed even more red than yesterday. Every little killing method I imagined in my head on the way here was completely gone. Now when he stood in front of me, it was different. But I had to keep reminding myself of the image of Toph's scorched feet. “Zuko”, I growled and he turned abruptly. He was startled by my presence, but scared of the look in my eyes. In a second of boiling blood and red vision I bend the earth around him to drag him towards me so we’re face to face. This close the details of his sharp features were prettier. He was pretty this close. The two or three freckles across the bridge of his nose. The pink tint of his lip. The softness of his hair. I shook the thought away as I lifted my hand to grasp his throat. Not to stop him breathing, but to make him feel threatened. He didn't seem that threatened by his bored look but I could feel the lump he swallowed vibrate against my palm. “I didn't believe the shit they said about you until what you did to Toph”, I clicked my tongue in denial “burning a little blind girl? that's low, even for you Prince”. He strained against my grip with a scowl “Don't call me that”. I raised an eyebrow “What? Prince? Oh right! I forgot. Banished huh? Why do you think the Avatar would want you when even your own family doesn't”. That seemed to be a soft spot since he somehow with pure body strength broke himself free from the stone cuffs around his feet to push me backwards. I lost my footing but luckily didn't trip all too embarrassing.  But the shame made me furious as I attacked him. I was just about to bend the ground under him when he moved like a panther against me. I groaned loudly in pain when my back rasped against the rough bark of a tree. Both my wrists were locked in a hard grip by his much larger hands. His body heat radiated over to mine as he pushed up against me, preventing me from moving. “Calm down”, his voice was in my hair, forcing a shiver down my spine. I swallowed thickly, unsure what to do. “Look”, he leaned back to look into my eyes, which was somehow worse. Against my will I met his honey pool eyes. “It was an accident, she came in the middle of the night and startled me. It was self defense. I had no idea it was her”. I stayed quiet, trying my best to escape his grip. It was too much, his rough palms against my sensitive skin, his hot breath in my face. Just the knowledge that he was so close set my body on fire. If i stayed here any longer i would do something i would surely regret. “Get off me”, my voice came out chapped and raspy. Instead of it sounding like an order it came out like a plea. His thumb swiped across the side of my palm swiftly before letting go. It was a small motion, but I noticed. It made my heart pound furiously, I bet he could feel it. the rumpling deep in my chest. I licked my dry lips, finally taking a step away from his. It felt like the world lifted off my shoulder when I finally got out of his intoxicating aura. I was happy I didn't faint. I pointed at him “If you ever, and i mean ever, touch Toph again. I will hunt you down, Prince”. I spit the last part and happily noticed he scrunched up his face. Then I turned around and left with my heart still beating twice the normal pace.
Returning to the Air temples i was relieved that no one noticed i left. It would be too embarrassing and shameful to explain. Explain how Zuko, The fire prince, pushed me up against a tree and gave me butterflies. Butterflies! Ridiculous. I spent the next hour pounding, trying to understand why Zuko even affected me in the way he did. I mean yes, he was obviously attractive, but… he was a fire bender! A person I've been taught to hate since the moment of my birth. The thought about my childhood made anxiety grow like a rock in the depths of my stomach so I decided to make myself busy. I couldn't keep puzzling about this. My thoughts got cut off by loud rumbling followed by ear crushing noises, so loud the ground vibrated. Someone shot something at the temple, and by the looks of it, it was aiming for the gang. On instinct I sprinted in their direction as I saw Aang and Sokka lifting up Toph from the fountain.”Stop!”,I froze at the familiar voice.
I turned my head so fast it made my neck burn. Up on a cliff a bit away was a huge figure next to…. Zuko. “I don't want you hurting the Avatar anymore!”. Aang groaned as he tried his best to carry Toph away from the scene. “The mission is off. I'm ordering you to stop”, Zuko struck his hands in front of the man. He was crazy, the much larger man could snap him in half. the Combustion Man. The man couldn't care less as he with ease shoved zuko out of the way and charged his eye. Another explosion, now much closer, made the entire place threaten to fall apart. If it wasn't for the small stone wall I bent over my friends, we would have been crushed by stone.
“If you keep attacking, I won't pay you!”,Zuko cupped his hands so fire was aiming against the large man. The combustion man was starting to get annoyed as he easily docked the fire and grabbed onto Zuko’s smaller body. “Okay i'll pay you double to stop!”.
I looked over at Aang “we should move”. He nodded in agreement, peaking over the stone wall. “Okay”, he looked back with frightened eyes. “Zuko seems to be keeping him busy, move now”. My legs almost gave up under me as I stood up with Toph's body over my shoulder. I gasped as I saw Zuko get thrown off the cliff. There were so many feelings in my body it confused me. There is no way he could survive a fall like that. Worry for his life was the feeling finally taking over as I swallowed down the lump rising. But in the last second it seemed, he grasped onto a vine hanging down the cliff. “Go”, Aang yelled and I nodded swiftly. I didn't look back but I could hear the familiar woosh of Aangs air bending behind me. Before I even had time to move Toph we got thrown by a sudden explosion behind us. Lucky us, I bent the ground under us so we didn't fall. “Stay here”, I mumbled to Toph as I placed her behind a wall. She crossed her arms annoyed and nodded to her brunt feet “it's not like I have much of a choice”. As I turned around I saw the rest of our gang run towards me. They had just enough time to jump next to us before the next explosion ruined the temple. “he’s going to blast this whole place right off the cliff side!”, Toph yelled, eyes blown wide exposing her grey glazed irises. Katara took a deep breath before peeking behind the wall only to see another incoming blast. She looked back at us with pursed lips “I can't step out to waterbend at him without being blown up and I can't get a good enough angle on him from down here”. At the world angle Sokka’s entire face brightened up. I swore I could see a lightbulb over his head. “I know how to get an angle on him!”, he shouted. I looked him up and down “really? well do tell”. Sokka fumbles with his belt before taking out his boomerang. After another blast, he sneaks his head out, but has to hide from yet another shot. With his tongue out, clearly in deep concentration, he projects  Combustion Man’s angle with his boomerang. He takes a deep breath “all right buddy, don't fail me now”. With a tensed arm he aims the boomerang and then uses his whole upper body strength to send it flying. In surprise the boomerang hits the assassin in the head where his third eye tattoo is, causing him to hit the ground. Sokka’s face is priceless as he catches the boomerang “yeah boomerang!”. But then the silence is broken by the assassin's heavy body getting up, clearly a bit shaken. Sokka's face fell “Awwww, boomerang…”. this is how we die huh? There was no way a few children could take on a trained assassin. But he seemed to take care of that job himself because his next aim is completely off. He misses, his next blast hits the ground around him. The ground shakes a few times under his feet before it gives up under him, causing him to fall.  As I help Toph up the best I can Zuko appears. Aang looks hesitant at him “i can't believe i'm saying this, but….thanks, zuko”. Sokka clearly took it personally as he turned to Aang “hey! What about me? I did the boomerang thing.” I rolled my eyes at his child's demeanor.
Zuko looked down before meeting Aang's eyes “Listen, I know I didn't explain myself very well yesterday, I've been through a lot in the last few years, and it's been hard. But I'm realizing that I had to go through all those things to learn the truth. I thought I had lost my honor, and that somehow my father could return it to me. But I know now that no one can give you your honor. It's something you earn for yourself, by choosing to do what's right. All I want to do now is play my part in ending this war, and I know my destiny is to help you restore balance to the world”.
No one was ready for his speech, especially not me. This was a needed side of him I hadn't seen. I recognized myself in his words and I had to turn my head to  clear my mind.
Zuko turned to Toph with shame in his eyes. “ I'm sorry for what I did to you”, he bows in her direction “It was an accident. Fire can be dangerous and wild, so as a firebender, I need to be more careful and control my bending, so I don't hurt people unintentionally”. I didn't know what to do with myself. Everything he said made sense, felt sincere. But it went against everything I had been taught. Every word, scolding, from my father. Everything he had told me. I rarely agreed with my father but when it came to the fire nation we used to be on the same page.  Aang opened his mouth to speak but closed it almost immediately. He looks in thought as if he tries to be careful with his words. He finally collected himself “I think you are supposed to be my firebending teacher. When I first tried to learn firebending, I burned Katara, and after that, I never wanted to firebend again. But now I know you understand how easy it is to hurt the people you love. I'd like you to teach me”. He then slowly bent forward, bowing respectfully to Zuko. I could see how hard he tried to keep that smile back as he bowes back “Thank you. i'm so happy you've accepted me into your group”. Aang stopped him in his words “Not so fast. I still have to ask my friends if it's okay with them.”. He turns to Toph with kind eyes “Toph, you're the one that Zuko burned. What do you think?”. Toph shrugs her shoulders. “Go ahead and let him join”, She pounds her fist into her palm jokingly “it'll give me plenty of time to get back at him for burning my feet”. I meet zuko’s eyes and mumbles under my breath “that makes two of us”. Aang turns to Sokka. Sokka shrugs in response “Hey, all I want is to defeat the fire lord. If you think this is the way to do it, then, I'm all for it”. A part of me was excited to see what Katara would say. She clearly loved Aang and trusted him with her life, but she also hated Zuko with all her spirit.  Aang slowly approached Katara. She looked Zuko up and down. Her glare is so hot I could feel Zuko's nervousness. I swore I could see sweat climbing down his forehead.  Finally she drops her walls “ I'll go along with whatever you think is right”. Relieved Aang smiles at her. He gives me a look but I understand the question. All my feelings are conflicted, but this was not my place to speak “Fine”. I look up my eyelashes “On one condition?”. Zuko noods with stiff movement. I smirk sideways “If i can joke about your scar”. The expression on Zuko’s face was hard to read. Either he was extremely offended or thought it was amusing. He gave me a sideways nod which I took as a yes.
The gang for some reason gave me the job to show him to his room. Probably because they thought I had the least history with him. Little do they know. The walk towards the room was awkward, both of us trying to keep our distance. “Um here we are”, I nodded towards the door and he walked into the room. I glanced toward him “Um, I think it's lunch soon. So, um unpack. um”. He looks up on me and gives me a weak smile. “And”, i weightened forwards and backwards on my feet “And well, keep an eye out. Either eye  works, but for you i guess the choice is pretty obvious”. He snorted “is that the best you can do?”. I was already down the hallway “trust me Prince pretty, i'm only getting started”.

Breaking The Rules (Zuko x Reader)
Warnings: None
Genre: Fluff, Slight Angst
Part: 1/1
Summary: See Request
•••
Heartbreak can make you do stupid things. It turns you into an empty shell of the person you used to be. Each person you let in takes a piece of you that you never get back. That’s why love is for the blind. Those who will happily open themselves up to the pain of abandonment and heartache.
I wasn’t one of those people anymore.
Ever since my ex broke my heart, I had created a set of rules to follow. They were simple and straightforward, designed to make sure I never repeat my mistakes again.
Little did I know, Zuko would soon have me breaking every single one.
•••
Rule #1: Don’t talk about yourself
The Western Air Temple was quiet as everybody slept. The soft sounds of snoring filled the air but otherwise there wasn’t a sound to be heard. I sighed, getting up and deciding to go somewhere else.
I decided to go for a walk. I walked up the stairs of the temple and began walking through the forest. I had only gotten a few feet away before I heard rustling.
I turned cautiously to the area the noise came from and got into a fighting position.
“Hello?” I called out.
There was a bit more rustling before Zuko popped out from behind the trees. I sighed and dropped my fighting stance.
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to scare you,” he apologized awkwardly.
“It’s ok,” I said.
He stood awkwardly for a few seconds, shuffling around on his feet as if debating wether to stay or not. He crossed his arms over his chest and looked at me hopefully.
“Mind if I walk with you?” he asked.
I shook my head no, not trusting my voice to work properly. I was still cautious of him, after all he did chase us across the world, but he just had a way of making me drop my guard.
Frankly, that scared me. It should have been the reason I said that I do mind and sent him on his way. But, of course I didn’t. I simply nodded and walked beside him.
“Couldn’t aleep?” he asked softly.
“Not really,” I replied, a sigh escaping me as I did.
I had always had trouble falling asleep. I was a night person so my mind just loved to keep me awake.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“No.”
The air was thick with a tension I didn’t know could exist. I desperately wanted to be back down in the temple so that I could avoid having a conversation with him. I needed to stay neutral about him.
“So, where are you from?” he inquired, looking at me from the side as he did.
I stayed silent, meeting his gaze with an apprehensive look.
“I just don’t remember seeing you in the group until a few months in,” he elaborated.
I pursed my lips and looked ahead, determining how much was too much. I would be walking a thin line by answering, but it would be kind of awkward for me to stay silent the entire walk.
“Right,” Zuko mumbled, mostly to himself, “I guess I probably should have assumed you still hate me.”
I felt a small part of my heart ache. The group had been giving him a hard time since joining, not that I blame them, but I also felt somewhat bad. I mean, he did seem like he was trying. I sighed.
“I’m from the Fire Nation originally, but I joined the group in Omashu,” I explained.
Zuko smiled slightly at my answer. I’m sure it felt nice for him to know he wasn’t the only Fire Nation one in the group.
“Can you firebend?” he asked excitedly.
I couldn’t stop the small smile that broke out on my face at his excitement.
“Yes, but I wasn’t allowed to train so I never use it to fight. I use throwing daggers for that,” I explained, lighting a small fire in my hand as I spoke before putting it out.
“Maybe I could teach you. Aang is still doing the basics so it wouldn’t be hard to add you into the mix,” he offered.
I hesistated. I really would like to learn how to firebend properly, but it would mean spending more and more time with him. Shirtless.
Eventually, my desire to learn won out.
“I would love that,” I answered with a smile.
•••
Rule #2: Never admit you have feelings
The Fire Nation emblem was unmistakable. The airships that surrounded us were definitely not friendly. Azula stood inside one of the ships and taunted Zuko.
I knew what he was about to do. He was going to be an idiot and fight her alone. She was getting under his skin and I knew as soon as he started running that I couldn’t stop him.
The Gaang rushed onto Appa and began flying through the sky, avoiding the ship’s attacks as we did. I kept my eye on Zuko the entire time. He was holding his own pretty well, but Azula was a formidable appontent.
“We’ve got to grab Zuko and get out of here,” Katara exclaimed.
“I know, but how? He’s standing right next to Azula!” Sokka said.
I turned to look back at Zuko just in time to see him hurtling off the ship and down into the abyss below.
“Zuko, no!” I screamed.
The Gaang watched in horror as Zuko began to fall. His own expression of horror etched itself into my mind. He was going to die.
Appa flew furiously through the air until we were swooping underneath Zuko. Katara managed to grab him hand and yank him down into the basket. I unknowingly let out a sigh of relief.
We flew to a new campsite far enough away from the temple and began to set up camp. I was sent to collect firewood, which left me plenty of time alone with my thoughts.
I had thought for sure that Zuko was going to die. The heart wrenching feeling in my chest as I watched him falling was unmistakable. I felt a nervous pit begin to form in my stomach.
I knew without a shadow of a doubt why I was so scared when he was falling. I knew why that feeling of relief that washed over me when Zuko was safe was also accompanied by a warm feeling in my stomach.
“I like Zuko,” I whispered, burying my face in my hands.
•••
Rule #3: Avoid physical affection
Zuko was right: the Ember Island players butchered every play. This one especially.
In hindsight, going to see a play about ourselves written by someone from the Fire Nation wasn’t a great idea. Everybody was in a bad mood, but especially Zuko.
I caught him wallowing out on the porch when I went to grab a midnight snack. I wondered wether to leave him alone or check on him. We had grown to be close friends since he joined us and I felt guilty about the idea of leaving him alone.
“Hey,” I said as I sat beside him, “Are you ok?”
He looked over to me with a sad smile before looking back out at the ocean.
“Yea, I’m ok. I just really didn’t like the play,” he sighed, bringing his knees up and hugging them to his chest.
“I didn’t like it either,” I admitted.
Particularly, I didn’t like the implied romance between Zuko and Katara. But of course, I didn’t say that.
“It just took every mistake I’ve ever made and threw it back in my face. It made me realize how undeserving I am of everyone’s forgiveness,” he explained, the same sad smile on his face as he spoke.
I hesistated. Normally, this is the point where I would wrap them in a hug and give a huge speech about how valued they are. I wanted to do that so badly right now, but the little voice in the back of my head that screamed no made me weary.
I settled for putting my hand on his shoulder and giving him a reassuring smile.
“You’re a good person, Zuko. Even good people make mistakes,” I said.
I stood up after a few moment of silence and began to walk away.
“Wait!” he exclaimed, grabbing my wrist as he scrambled to his feet.
I stood frozen to the spot, a look of shock and apprehension on my face as I wondered what he was doing. My skin tingled at the contact and sent a swarm of butterflies off in my chest.
I was about to say something before I felt Zuko wrap his arms around me. I hesitated for only a moment before returning it. He was incredibly warm and I found myself melting into him with every passing moment.
“Thank you,” he whispered, sending a shiver down my spine.
“You’re welcome,” I replied, my voice barely audible.
•••
Rule #4: Never be emotionally vulnerable
Zuko’s battle with Azula had not gone to plan, but he had still won. Today, he was getting crowned as Fire Lord and I couldn’t have been happier for him.
I went to go see him before the ceremony and found him struggling to get into his clothes. I giggled slightly which caught his attention.
“Y/N!” he exclaimed happily.
I hadn’t been able to see him since he left at the White Lotus camp. I glanced at the bandages wrapped around his chest and walked closer to him. I helped him pull his sleeve onto his arm as he smiled.
“I’m glad you’re ok,” I admitted softly.
“Same here. I heard you took some nasty hits,” he said, looking down to where my own bandages were wrapped.
“All for the good of the nation,” I replied, a joking smile on my face.
He laughed slightly before hugging me. At this point, I was no longer surprised when he did, but I still got just a flustered. I let myself enjoy the warmth of his embrace a little longer before pulling away.
“I’m glad you came to see me,” he said, rubbing the back of his neck with his good arm before adding, “I actually wanted to tell you something.”
“Oh?” I asked in surprise.
“I wanted to say something before I left to fight Azula, but I kind of chickened out. And then I almost died and realized I just needed to come out and say it,” he explained, taking a step closer to me.
My breath hitched as my eyes met his. They were so beautiful and more filled with emotion than I had ever seen before.
“Y/N, I really like you. I’ve had a crush you on pretty much since the beginning, actually,” he admitted, chuckling slightly as he looked to the side.
My heart dropped in my chest. Part of me was over the moon elated at the fact that he returned my feelings and the other half of me was too scared to say it back.
“W-Why?” I asked, my voice shaky.
“Why? Because you’re insanely beautiful and smart and funny and supportive. You believed in me when I didn’t and you make me a better person,” he said, a breathy laugh leaving his voice as he spoke.
I shook my head. I couldn’t believe it. It had to be some kind of joke.
“That’s not true,” I said quietly, beginning to step back from him as I did.
Zuko stepped forward again and took my hand in his. I met his gaze with tears in my eyes.
“It is true. I didn’t know until a little while ago, but it’s true. I fell for you without even knowing it and, Agni, does it hurt that you can’t see it,” he said.
“I...,” I began, my voice cracking with all the emotions I was feeling.
“It’s ok. I figured you probably wouldn’t feel the same,” he sighed, stepping back before saying, “I just wanted you to know.”
Seeing the heartbreak in his eyes only made mine worse. I took a deep breath.
“That’s not it. I....,” I trailed off, my confidence faltering slightly as he looked at me.
I ran a hand through my hair nervously before crossing my arms over my chest. Zuko simply watched me patiently, waiting for me to finish.
“I do like you. A lot. I’m just scared,” I admitted.
“Scared I’ll bertray you like I did the others,” he said softly.
“No! No, this has nothing to do with you,” I assured him quickly, desperate to stop him from going down that train of thought again, “I just...my ex really hurt me and I’m afraid of trusting someone that much again.”
Zuko stayed still for a moment before pulling me into a hug. I immediately began to cry as he held me, his hand rubbing up and down my back.
“I don’t know what your ex did, but I promise you this isn’t a joke. I’m so head over heels for you, Y/N. Even the Gaang can back me up,” he assured me, his arms tightening around me slightly.
I took a deep shaky breath before pulling back slightly. I felt the nervous pit in my stomach once more, but in that moment I wanted to ignore the rules. I leaned up and kissed him.
It was soft and nurturing and so very different from how my ex and I used to kiss. Zuko kisses me like I was a treasure he never wanted to lose. Like I was the air he needed to breath. It sent a warm feeling across my entire body.
“Does this mean you’ll be my girlfriend?” he mumbled into my lips.
I cracked a small smile before responding. I ignored the voice in my head that told me to run away.
“Yes.”
•••
Rule #5: Never say I love you. Ever.
Things with Zuko have been going great. I had been dating him for a few months and even with him being Fire Lord, he always made time for me. Wether it was small breaks in the garden to impromptu lunches, he always managed to fit me into his busy schedule.
Today, it was early morning tea. The morning was still bright and the tea I held on a tray as I walked towards his room left tiny curls of steam billowing behind me. I didn’t bother to knock before opening the door, but apparently I should have.
Inside, there was Mai. Kissing Zuko.
I felt the tray slip from your hands and crash onto the floor. Zuko shoved Mai off of himself as the tray fell and then looked to the doorway when he heard the crash. His expression of anger dropped when he saw me standing there.
“Y/N, wait!” he exclaimed, his expression of horror clear as day.
I ran out of the room. I didn’t even know where I was running, I just let my feet take me wherever they wanted. I knew I had been stupid to trust him. I felt my breathing become shallower as I ran and the panicked feeling in my chest grew as well.
I finally stopped in the garden by the turtle duck pond and cursed myself inside. Of course I had come here. This used to be Zuko and I’s stress free spot. I felt myself struggling to breath as I let my tears fall.
“Y/N, let me explain.”
I turned to see Zuko standing a few feet behind me. I hadn’t even heard him walking towards me. I turned back around and began furiously wiping my tears away.
“Go away, Zuko. I have no interest in hearing what you have to say,” I spat.
“Y/N, please. She kissed me out of nowhere. I didn’t kiss her back. You just happened to walk in at the wrong time,” he pleaded, taking a step closer towards me.
I scoffed before turning around and glaring at him angrily.
“I don’t believe you,” I said through gritted teeth.
“Y/N, I would never cheat on you. You’re the most important person in the entire world to me. I don’t love Mai, I love-“
“Stop! Stop it.”
My scream cut him off and sent the atmosphere into one of tense silence. My tears had begun falling once more. I didn’t want him to finish. I couldn’t hear him finish.
“Don’t tell me you love me unless you mean it,” I said quietly, my voice wavering.
“I do mean it,” he said, running a hand through his hair as he spoke, “I mean, this isn’t by any means how I was planning on telling you, but it’s true. I love you, Y/N.”
I met his amber eyes and felt a piece of my heart shatter. He had real genuine pain in his eyes, like he was begging me to believe him. I wanted to. I wanted to believe so badly.
“How can you expect me to trust you?” I choked out, wiping my tears away once more.
“Because I’m not your ex. I’m your loving boyfriend who wants to spend the rest of his life treating you with the love and respect you deserve,” he answered, taking another careful step forward.
I let out a shaky sigh and balled my fists. I forced myself to shut my eyes and look down at my feet. I felt tears building up once more as I fought with myself about what to do. I wanted to believe him because I did trust him. But, that tiny voice was still screaming at me to run.
I wanted to say it back. I wanted to admit that I did love him. But I knew that once I said it there would be no going back. I would be sending myself down the very path my rules were set to keep me from.
I felt Zuko’s arms wrap around me and realized I had begun to sob. My hands were at my mouth to muffle the sounds and I could feel Zuko’s hand rubbing circles onto my back. I latched onto him and cried.
“Shhh. Shhh. It’s ok. I’m so sorry, Y/N. I’m so so sorry,” he whispered soothingly into my ear to calm me down.
He knew I was fighting a battle within myself. Even without me having to tell him, he knew. Maybe it was because he knew the signs of what he had gone through himself or maybe it was because he knew me so well. Probably both.
I found myself melting once more into his soothing embrace and I allowed my sobs to die down. Zuko never loosened his hold on me or stopped comforting me. I felt the familiar warmth I felt when I was around him return.
“I love you too,” I said, my voice cracking as I did.
I heard Zuko laugh and pulled away to see that he had also been crying. I wiped his tears away and pulled him into a kiss. He kissed me again and again and again, smiled wider after each one.
I pulled away from his to give him a stern look. His smile faltered for a moment, scared of what I was going to say.
“I’m still mad at you though. I don’t want Mai anywhere near you alone again,” I huffed.
“Deal. You don’t even have to ask again. I’m all yours, Y/N. I promise,” he responded immediately, his smile returning.
Satisfied with his answer, I hooked his arm with mine and began leading him to the kitchen.
“Let’s go make some more tea. I could use some after all that,” I joked.
I heard him laugh and press a kiss to the top of my head as we began to walk.
“I’m so in love with you, Y/N.”
“I know.”

Kataang! And maiko (from azuwulastan)
Thanks! <3
Kataang
What made you ship it?
Of course, if it isn’t abundantly obvious I’ve been a hardcore Kataang shipper for a while lol. I never watched ATLA while it was airing but around the time when the first book of LOK as airing, I watched that and it made me interested in checking out the original ATLA series. My friends basically told me that Kataang/Maiko were canon but I didn’t know what to expect because most people seemed to prefer Z*tara. So during Book 1, it became extremely clear that the writers were going with the Kataang angle. I didn’t mind it but wasn’t completely sold just yet. Then their bond gradually developed from friends to something a lot deeper and after The Guru when Aang envisioned Katara as the personification of the love he has for his entire culture, they were clearly more than the standard fluffy teen romance. After that especially and The Headband episode, I started to love Kataang.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
There’s just something sweet about how Aang adores Katara. He has seen her at her highest and lowest points but he still loves her as she is. I love how there’s this spiritual aspect to their relationship, which is fitting for ATLA. They are attracted to each other but there’s also this special, almost otherworldly connection they have to each other that goes deeper than that.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
That they’re not just a fluffy, rainbows and sunshine relationship and it’s kind of dull when they’re portrayed that way. Sure they’re a really happy relationship but they do have conflicts throughout the story, which actually imo makes them much more entertaining and realistic.
Maiko
What made you ship it?
Always had a soft spot for them but after Mai stood up to Azula and delivered her whole “I love Zuko more than I fear you” line, I couldn’t not ship these two.
What are your favorite things about the ship?
They’re both kind of weird hipster introverts who get each other and share the same warped dark of humour that any other character would be repulsed by. It’s very sweet how he gets this huge smile on his face when he talks about her and she shows her soft side around him.
Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
There are some unhealthy relationships in atla but Maiko are not this toxic horrible couple they’re portrayed as by detractors. They’re actually one of the most positive relationships in the story and they inspire each other to be true to themselves. For two people who each had childhood drama and were going through some of the toughest moments in their lives, they still managed to work through their difficulties and stay together.

Something there // Zuko x Y/N
Based on ‘Something there’ from Beauty and The Beast
Warning: Zuko being aangsty
I recommend listening to the song as you read.
Also, the gif is not mine.
~~~~~~
Something there
Y/N rested against a tree, her eyes glued to Zuko as he sparred with Aang
‘There's something sweet, and almost kind’
Her mind and heart seemed to be at war with each other as she watched him gracefully move his body to dodge Aang’s fire.
She remembered the night before, when she remained outside after everyone went to sleep, keeping herself warm by the fire as she thought about her home.
“You mind some company?” Zuko smiled as he sat down next to her.
She smiled back at him.
“Not at all.”
His eyes met her e/y ones, and a blush appeared on both their faces.
“What’s on your mind?” He asked her.
She sighed, looking down. “My parents. I left them after the eclipse, they told me to go, that it’ll be safer for me.
I’m worried about them. I mean, I’m glad they’re not at the Boiling Rock, of course, but I have no idea where they are and it’s killing me inside.”
Zuko turned his body towards her, and placed his hand on hers. She looked up, her cheeks turning red as he gave her a soft look.
“Your parents are strong and capable, and I have no doubt they are still alive, pridefully fighting. When this is over, we’re going to free them, and you’ll reunite with them.”
He gently brushed his thumb over her hand, and gave it a gentle squeeze.
“They’ll want you to not worry about them. And I’m sure that wherever they’re right now, they’re so proud of you. You’re helping the avatar restore balance to the world, and you’re fighting against everything the other side of the war throws at you. They’re proud of you.”
He gently lifted her chin up, his golden eyes shining brightly as he stared at her as if she was the most beautiful person he ever laid eyes on.
“I am proud of you.”
She snapped out of it, watching him direct a fireball at Aang.
She frowned slightly, remembering the first time they met.
‘But he was mean and he was coarse and unrefined’
It was during the time that Katara stole the water bending scroll from the pirates.
A week after Y/N left Omashu to help Aang and his friends, Zuko found them during the night while Y/N was watching Katara practice her water bending.
Since her earthbending skills weren’t that great back then, she didn’t really stood her ground against the pirates and Zuko with his guards, and ended up tied next to Katara.
“I’ll save you both from the pirates.” He tried to blackmails Katara to tell him the whereabouts of the avatar with her mother’s necklace.
“Go jump in the river.” Y/N spat at the prince.
He turned towards her, as if he noticed her for the first time.
“Well well, another peasant joined your little group.”
Y/N only rolled her eyes at him. “Strong words coming from a scarred banished prince with no honor, don’t you think?”
Need less to say, it didn’t went nicely from that moment on.
She worked hard with her earthbending from that day, swearing she’ll never be as useless as she was that night.
And every single time they met after that day, it was her that fought him. He always noticed that she was getting better each time they fought, and that’s when he truly paid attention to her.
She wasn’t much of a peasant after all.
‘And now he's dear, and so unsure
I wonder why I didn't see it there before’
But those days were in the past. He was a different man now. A strong, brave, kind man, who left his nation behind to join team avatar and fight against his father.
And she’d lie to say she didn’t have feelings for him.
He was handsome, inside and out.
Of course, he was still very insecure and had anger issues, but she knew he was working on that.
And she was proud of him.
She came out of her thoughts as she saw Zuko shot a huge fireball at Aang.
Poor Aang couldn’t firebend back in time, and used airbending instead.
The air blast was so strong, it sent Zuko flying two meters in the air before landing on the water.
He shot out of it after a few seconds, tangled in sea weed.
He yelled angrily as he tried to untangle himself, and she couldn’t help but laugh.
Even in these situations he managed to be just as handsome.
‘She glanced this way, I thought I saw’
His eyes widened when he heard laughter, not knowing Y/N was watching them. He finally untangled himself and turned to face her, and the sight of her giggling in amusement made his heart skip a beat.
How could someone be so perfect? He found himself asking.
‘And when we touched, she didn't shudder at my paw’
Memories of the precious night appeared in his mind, remembering how they watched the stars together the entire night, and he told her about his childhood, his mother, and his scar.
How embarrassing it was for him to realize he was crying. He thought she’d be disgusted by this gesture, that she’ll think he was weak and pathetic, just like his father and his sister thought.
What he didn’t expect was for her to slowly embrace him in her arms, softly leaning his head on her shoulder.
He gasped as her hand softly caressed his cheek, slowly going up to touch his scar.
He pulled away in fear; why was he afraid? Was he afraid? What if she thought he was as hideous as a monster? She must have thought this way, it was completely normal.
He was weak, pathetic, and hideous.
And she knew it, and he knew it.
“I know what you think of me.” He tried to say coldly, but his voice came out in a tremble, as if he was facing his worst nightmare. “You think I am hideous. As good as a monster.”
Y/N gasped in shock as he spoke, and she immediately took his hands in hers and brought them to her lips. Zuko blushed at her gesture, and watched her in surprise.
“I think your scar proves that no matter what you went through, no matter what people threw at you, you came out stronger than you were before. I don’t think you’re a monster, Zuko. I think you’re brave and honorable, and I am so happy you joined our group. I am glad to be around you, because you inspire me so much.”
His eyes widened, his lips trembling.
“I- I inspire you?”
She chuckled softly at him, placing her hand on his right cheek again. “You’re the living proof that we can learn from our mistakes and become the best versions of ourselves. That we can all change for the greater good.”
She leaned in slowly, and her lips rested on his scar softly, making him feel something he never felt before.
“And I don’t think you’re hideous, Prince Zuko. I think you’re the handsomest boy I have ever laid eyes upon.”
Zuko shook his head as Aang asked him if he was alright.
Of course he was.
Why couldn’t he stop thinking about her?
Every since he joined team avatar, there’s hasn’t been a moment he didn’t think of her.
Whenever the group gathered around to eat, it wold physically hurt him if he didn’t sat directly next to her. It would pain him in various ways if she didn’t talk to him or acknowledge his presence.
But she always did. Sometimes he felt as if he was the only one she noticed at all.
‘No, it can't be, I'll just ignore’
He couldn’t let his feelings get to him. She couldn’t possibly like him, of course?
Why would she?
She was the most intelligent and beautiful girl he knew, and she always knew exactly what to say. She was mature and responsible and she wanted the best she could have in her future after the war would come to an end.
He was just a scared banished Prince, hated by his own family and nation. What could he possibly offer her that she’d want?
She could barely tolerate him, anyway.
His eyes widened as she slowly walked towards him as Aang decided to take a break, trying to look away from her hips as she swayed them gracefully on her way.
‘But then she's never looked at me that way before’
Her eyes met his, and a smile appeared on her face as he noticed her.
Several thoughts clouded his mind.
If she truly didn’t like him, why would she act this way around him?
“How was training, Prince Zuko?”
And she always called him by his title, as if it held any meaning at all. She probably did this to tease him, but he honestly thought that his title and his name never sounded as good as they did when it was her to say them.
“Wet.” He muttered, and blushed as she arched a brow in amusement at him. “I mean- seaweed.”
Seaweed? Seriously?
Could he act more like an idiot around her?
He almost sighed out in relief as she giggled softly at his words, and blushed as she took his hand in hers, brushing her thumb over his hand, making sparks lighten his body.
‘New, and a bit alarming
Who'd have ever thought that this could be?’
She blushed as well, but pushed her awkwardness away.
It’s now or never, she told herself.
“Listen, I spotted a nice dining place around the nearest town, ten minutes away from here. Would you like to go out with me there?”
He almost fainted right there and then.
“Are yo- you- a-asking me- you’re asking- you want to- are you-“
‘True, that he's no Prince Charming
But there's something in him that I simply didn't see’
She chuckled at his attempt to form a sentence. “Yes dummy, I’m asking you on a date. So? What’s your answer?”
He stood frozen to his place for a minute, and she shook him gently.
“Hello, Zuko there?”
He finally seem to step on earth, and his face formed a smile bigger than he ever did before.
“Yes! I mean...yeah, I’d love to.” He tried to play it cool, but ended up blushing and leaning in to her touch as she placed her hand on his cheek.
“Then let’s go, shall we?”
He kissed her hand, and took it in his.
“Yes, lets go.”
‘Well, who'd have thought? Well, bless my soul, Well, who'd have known?’
Unknown to them, Katara and Sokka were watching them leave, widening their eyes as they spotted them holding hands.
“I can’t believe it.” Katara gasped.
‘Well, who indeed? And who'd have guessed they'd come together on their own?’
Sokka grinned.
“I can’t believe it took them so long.”
“They are so perfect together.” Katara smiled.
‘It's so peculiar, wait and see, we'll wait and see a few days more’
There may be something there that wasn't there before’
“They truly are. They’re perfect for each other.” Sokka admitted.
“Who’s perfect for each other?” Aang asked as he stepped next to them.
His eyes widened and he let out a gasp as he saw Y/N and Zuko smiling at each other, walking hand in hand.
‘Here's a thought, perhaps there's something there that wasn't there before.’
Aang smiled brightly as his friend.
“Well, it’s about time!”
“What’s about time?” Toph asked as she stepped next to them as well, confused by Aang’s statement.
“What’s going on?”
Aang and Katara smiled at each other and walked away as Sokka turned to Toph.
He ruffled her hair and grinned.
“I’ll tell you when you’re older.”
Senior Year Aventures (zuko xOC) pt.9.5
“Come dance with me”
The ride to Toph’s house was calming. Zuko let her have the aux, her favorite songs played as she watched the beautiful scenery. Toph lived pretty much in the middle of the woods, she always loved driving down Bei-fong lane seeing the practical mansion peak through the evergreens.
“wow Tophs house is huge!!” Zuko looked at the house in wonder. That’s another thing she loved, when someone new sees Tophs house, especially when the person is cute.
“you’re going to want to park in the garage” she tells him as the get to the front of the house.
“The garage doors are close though?”
“Yeah I know I have the garage key” she digs out her keys to get the garage key out. She presses the button and the doors slowly open up. Sokka and Aangs cars are parked in the first two garages, leaving Zuko to park in the third. She jumps out of the car first, walking quickly to the door and unlocking it. She opens the door and walked back to Zuko’s car to help him get out the drinks. They walk in the house, making sure to lock the door and made their way to the kitchen.
“hello!! Any irresponsibility teens home!!”
“in the living room”
Setting the drinks on the kitchen island, the two walked to the living room, a sight Kianna has seen hundreds of times, but Zuko was amazed. And rightfully so, every room in Toph’s house was a beautiful sight. Tophs parents were world famous architects, of course their house would be nothing but art. The living rooms high ceilings brought in the natural light into the room and a perfect view of the enormous back yard a pool could be seen through the celling to floor window.
“looks like Zuko is enjoying Toph’s house” Sokka says, everyone turns to look at the boy, his eyes were wide with amazement.
“Ki you should give him a house tour” suki says. Kianna didn’t even have to look at suki to see she was slightly smirking. ‘I’m starting to regret telling them I like Zuko’
“we can do that another day, right now I’m ready to get smashed”
“ I second that, let’s get this pregame started” everyone cheered as they walked in the kitchen.
“wait” Kianna stops from taking a drink “did you guys party proof the house”
The groan Sokka let out was enough to answer her question.
“alright everyone split up, meet back here in 20 minutes” everyone sets the cups down, walking in different directions while Zuko just stood there.
“come with me Zuko” Kianna chuckles ‘boy does he need to stop acting so new’
she led him to the dining room. This room had the most expensive things on display, and if anything, where broken it wouldn’t be pretty.
“everything you see in here needs to go in the case in the corner so we can lock it up”. Zuko doesn’t say anything back, he just starts picking things up and putting them neatly in the case, the two worked in silence for about 5 minutes until everything was put away. Kianna places the lock on the case, giving it an extra tug to make sure it wouldn’t budge.
“ok all we need to do now is lock the study and we can go drink” she gives him a bright smile, which he returns quickly. He follows her a little more closely now, almost like he’s working up the courage to hold his hand. He was so close she noticed when he wasn’t following her anymore. She turned around to see him looking at a painting, her painting.
“is this the piece you were talking about?” he asked, though his eyes never moved from the painting.
“yes, the Bei-fongs where the first people to hire me, when Toph’s mother found out I could paint she asked me to do this piece, it’s one of my favorites” the painting is of Toph, sitting in the garden that was placed in the back yard, it took Kianna weeks to finish it but it was honestly amazing work, the colors blended together perfectly, the flowers draw beautifully, you would think it was painted by a professional who’s had years of practice, not a 13 yea old girl.
“I had just moved in with them too, at the time they lived in the house I live in now” she takes a few more steps to the door of the study, knowing Zuko could still hear her.
“it took me a while to warm up to Mr. and Mrs. b but when they found my art and showed genuine interest in it, I knew they were good people.” She sighs at the memory
“when if finished it, Mr. b told all his rich friends, I started commissioning pieces for them on the weekends, Mrs. b put all the money I earned and started a fund for me, I’m pretty sure the put their own money in there too.” She locks the door, and twist the handles to check that is was locked.
“so, the Bei-fongs are your parents?” Zuko finally tore his eyes off the masterpiece
“there my adoptive parents, the took me in right before my 13th birthday they gave me there old house a few months ago when I turned 18, I guess they wanted me to have something of my own after not having anything the majority of my life” Zuko turns to face her, looking deeply in her eyes. Both of them getting lost in each other’s eyes, studying each other like they would forget the shing specks of brown and gold.
“it looks like I have a lot to learn about you” he says smiling at her “but I can’t help but be interested and finding out exactly who you are Kianna” ‘wow did he get closer? And god the way he says my nam-“
“KI, ZUKO, WE ARE ABOUT TO DRINK WITH OUT YOU” Tophs yelling startles them both, with a shy smile, she leads him back to the kitchen, immediately getting handed a drink. The teens spend the next two hours drinking, setting up music, and clearing furniture for a spot for people to dance. By the time the crowds of party animal students arrived, Kianna was tipsy, on the verge of being completely drunk. She had lost sight of Zuko for what seems like hours. Being pulled away by other classmates to do shots and chat about how Mr.Piandao test was a bitch. It wasn’t until around midnight that she spotted Zuko talking to some of the boys from the soccer team. The boys looked like they were having a fun conversation, she couldn’t hear what they were saying but before she could look away, Zuko caught her glaze. He tells the boys a quick goodbye and makes his way to her. All she could do was stand there and watch him, it was almost, like everything went is slow motion and maybe she was actually just drunk.
“hey, you having fun” she says as soon as he was close enough to hear her, which was extremely close with the loud music playing.
“yeah I am, some of the guys from the soccer team have been convincing me to play”
“you play soccer, you should totally go for the team”
He shrugs “I played at my old school, I’ve been debating if I should pick it up here, some guys don’t like new people on their team”
She gives him a smile “nah the team isn’t like that, and if you love to play you shouldn’t let other people stop you”
He gives her a soft smile -god that smile- “do you want to come with me to get a refill”
She gives him a nod and turns to walk to the kitchen, he walks with her, and she almost jumps when he places his and on the small of her back, slightly leading her. They get to the kitchen and find it surprisingly empty. Ask Zuko takes her cup to fill it with whatever drink he was drinking she hops up on the island, crossing her ankles so no one could see up her dress
“here try this” he hands her back her cup, she takes sip of the drink and it was so good she ends up chugging the rest.
“geeze slow down “he laughs when she hands him her empty cup filling it for her anyway
“what is that it’s so good!!”
“it’s my own concoction, I call it California surprise, but really slow down on it, the sugar will make you drunk super-fast” he hands her cup, which she takes brushing his finger times lightly. she takes a slow sip before putting the cup down.
“you know I forgot to tell you look really good tonight” she slyly looks at him through her eyelashes “you trying to impress some”
He sets his cup down next to hers “well you look absolutely amazing, did you know red is my favorite color?”
“really, red is mine too”
He raises his eyebrow “well good thing we match huh”
Before she could think of a reply, a familiar tune distracts her
“oh! This is my favorite song, come dance with me!” she dragged Zuko toward the dance floor in the Livingroom, he didn’t put up a fight, so he figured he was ok with it. When the got to the dance floor she turned to him.
“I’m not really a good dance” he says clearly hesitating
“that’s ok, everyone is too drunk to notice” she wraps his ands around her waist and puts her arms around his neck, slightly swaying to the music. Zuko loosened up eventually swaying with her. The two danced to a few songs, then went to the kitchen to get a drink, then going back to dancing. At some point in the night Kianna had he back pressed against Zuko’s chest while they danced. The two were lost in their own world, enjoying each other. They didn’t even notice Katara, Sokka, suki and Aang watching them the whole night. And when the group watched the two disappear to where Kianna’s old room was, all Toph could think was ‘tomorrow morning is going to be really interesting, and imma bout to get paid’
For the character ask thing-a-bob, what about Aang and Asami? :)
yay! I finally got aang! I can’t believe he’s the last one from the gaang to make it into this ask game!
favorite thing about them: he’s an angel? seriously, he’s just absurdly adorable and kind. aang is such an interesting protagonist because he’s uber optimistic and caring, and even in an actual war, he actively seeks out to spread light and hope and forgive absolutely everyone.
least favorite thing about them: nothing. I have a really hard time critiquing aang. I know he is a flawed character, but none of those flaws really amount to a “least favorite thing” for me!
favorite line: “anyone’s capable of great good and great evil. everyone, even the fire lord and the fire nation, have to be treated like they’re worth giving a chance.” I really enjoy avatar taking a stand and exploring grey areas of morality. a lot of shows keep things very black-and-white, but real life is a lot more of a middle-ground.
brOTP: aang and sokka!!! I saw a gifset of their relationship once and I just loved it because yes, they are best buddies and it’s so sweet.
OTP: hear me out, but... kataang. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know my bio says zutara die-hard, and I am, truthfully, but I have a huge soft spot for kataang! they just make my heart happy.
nOTP: I don’t get the aang/zuko pairing? I don’t really know that it’s a “notp” but I definitely don’t ship it.
random headcanon: aang can cook really well. there is zero proof of this in canon, but I just have a good feeling about it. he can make some mean vegetarian dishes!
unpopular opinion: I don’t actually think that this opinion is unpopular, but I don’t like the way aang was written as a dad in legend of korra canon. just taking tenzin places while leaving kya and bumi and katara behind every time? I don’t buy it.
song i associate with them: I don’t know! I think maybe “count on me” by bruno mars?
favorite picture of them:
Tumblr media
the flower crown, it’s just too much. look at him! he’s so cute!
and normally this is where these posts would end, BUT ASAMI IS MY FAVE IN LEGEND OF KORRA. so this is gonna be a super long one because I want to talk about her, too!
favorite thing about them: I love non-benders! I love seeing non-benders do amazing things with their bender friends! non-benders holding their own in battles! it’s amazing! also, I love that she’s very much a girly-girl who still fights, and fights well.
least favorite thing about them: this is not on her in particular, but I remember reading somewhere once that asami is not drawn very expressively, and I kind of agree with that. it would’ve been cool to see her make the goofy, cartoon-y faces that everyone else makes!
favorite line: “it’s all right. people usually assume that I’m daddy’s helpless little girl, but I can handle myself.” objectively, I’ve seen legend of korra just once all the way through and it was like, four years ago, so I can’t really remember any super specific quotes! but I do like this one.
brOTP: asami and bolin! they have such a weird dynamic, I love it!
OTP: I mean, come on, y’all. it’s gotta be korrasami.
nOTP: there isn’t one that I really know of? the last airbender and legend of korra fandoms are, in general, pretty separate, so I haven’t seen any ships for asami that I don’t like!
random headcanon: asami and uncle iroh would really get along, I just know it.
unpopular opinion: I didn’t dislike her and mako together!
song i associate with them: “pretty” by ingrid michaelson. yep, 10/10.
favorite picture of them:
oh my goodness she is so cute
send me a character!
ATLA Shipping meme by @sapphiirose
I just saw this and thought it looked fun. :’D
Reddish-Pink YAS - My OTPs, makes mah heart go boom.
Katara and Aang - As it’s described in the Guru, the love of a whole nation reborn, makes me legit cry. My heart can’t take it.
Zuko and Yue - An Avatar Zuko fanfic introduced me to this ship and it just grabbed onto my heart and squeezed as hard as it could.
Toph and Sokka - HE PROTECT, SHE BE SOFT. MY HEART.
Softer Pink Heart - I ship it, but it doesn’t hit that spot in my soul like my OTPs do.
Katara and Zuko - Used to be a huge OTP for me, but constant oversaturation has dampened my taste for the ship. Also, dispite my best efforts, I’ve come to associate it with a lot of bad Aang takes and hate on Aang. And Aang is like my fave character. :(
Sokka and Yue - I don’t think we talk enough about how much Yue’s death fucked up poor Sokka. Like, dude’s a closed book, but I think the swamp episode showed that it really messed him up. Also, the fact that Yue, a princess, really loved him. She loved him for him, not for status or anything superficial. She got to know him for him, and decided that she liked him. ;n;
Mai and Ty Lee - Like, I could see Mai coming to betray Azula, she was at least somewhat willing to disobey from the get go. But then Ty Lee was like, fear be damned, the people I love are worth fighting my abusers for. (I’m still torn about whether I should have listed this one with OTPs, xD)
Zuko and Aang - I have a soft spot for this ship. <3
Purple “Don’t ship, but it’s cool” - I like it, but I don’t really ship it. It’s not really my thing.
Suki and Yue - I happened to think of this pair when doing this. It’s a cute pair, but I’m sure other people would love it more than me.
Sokka and Zuko - I know that it’s super popular right now, but it’s not my thing.
Blue “Eh...” - I don’t ship it, but I don’t actively feel any kind of way about it.
Suki and Sokka - What can I say? I’m not a fan.
Mai and Zuko - Don’t care for the ship.
Black “BURN IT” - NOTPs, ships I actively hate or dislike
Toph and Aang - It is an objectively unproblematic ship, it just rubs me the wrong way. It feels like a compulsory “opposites MUST go together”, and “pair the spares”. I’d rather they both be single.
Jet or Azula with ANYONE - No thank you!
Author’s note: I’m sorry for using a gif and a picture, I know it looks clunky. They’re both needed for reference, for something I don’t describe in the fic lol Draya and Zuko spend most of this chapter in water and I imagine Draya wearing something similar to what Katara’s wearing except black, at least in style. So like Mai’s top, but with straps. And Zuko probably looks very similar to how he does in this picture. I had to explain that because I wanted it to be clear that they’re not running around naked. Okay enjoy lol
Previous Chapters
I always had a hard time separating my emotions from my firebending, and that especially became true with Zuko around. Since we were all so focused on Aang’s training, it seemed like there was never time to relax anymore. Things became particularly tense when Zuko started having trouble with his firebending, his flames becoming less and less visible the more he tried. I became so overwhelmed, having to step in as Zuko’s “co-teacher” and being “the flame to his bending” as Sokka would say (always earning him a swift kick in the shin), that eventually my firebending began to suffer too. An aggravated Zuko was trying to teach us a new move, at this point only being able to produce steam at his palms, which caused him to yell about my stance being wrong; Aang was, of course, able to copy him with ease and I became so upset I stormed off.
I figured the best thing I could do was find some water, a huge perk of training on land and not in the air temple, for a swim. Katara liked us to have what she called “bath night”, where she’d have Aang and Sokka pair off while Toph and I would pair off further upstream to, you know, bathe. Her and I would alternate with Toph, knowing the small earthbender needed baths more frequently, knowing she liked to have what she called “a healthy coating of earth” cover her skin. Katara can act like such a mother sometimes that I forget we’re close in age. I was always relieved when Katara would ask me to pair up with Toph, because with her around I always felt safer. Besides, she wouldn’t be able to ask questions like Katara would. I realized early on into my adventure with Team Avatar that being in the water helped calm my emotions in a way I never knew possible and I grew to love bath night.
I found a small alcove after walking for what felt like ages, a small waterfall adding to the privacy of the spot. I removed the top layer of my clothing, quickly washing and wringing the fabric out and hanging them up on a nearby branch before stepping into the water. I didn’t particularly like wearing long boots over my pants or that heavy robe, especially while training for hours on end, but I couldn’t let the others see the scars that riddled my torso,  legs and arms. I had to wade through enough pity from them as it is, especially now.
I stood in the water, only about hip high, and shut my eyes taking deep breaths as I listened to the trickling falls. I started to move my hands in the air the way I’d seen Katara do a million times while practicing with Aang. I was gliding through the water, movement coinciding with my breaths, a cool glow from the flame growing in my hands, for what seemed like hours. I was so lost in thought that I almost caught Zuko on fire off when he said my name.
“Draya?” My eyes shot open as I turned around, a ball of flame leaving my hand and flying towards Zuko. He was easily able to dodge it; it gave me enough time to scrabble behind the falling water, which was just big enough to hide behind.
“What are you doing here Zuko? I thought it was clear that I wanted to be alone.” I said, refusing to accept the fact that it would be impossible for him to have not seen the scars that showered my whole body. I could see Zuko’s warped image in the waterfall, barely making out his movements as he removed his shirt and flung it over the same branch my clothes were hanging on. I quickly turned my head, hearing some splashes before they stopped in front of the falls.
“You’ve been really upset lately, and I just wanted to make sure everything was okay. I know it’s… a lot, training the Avatar and-“
“I’m not training the Avatar Zuko, you are, remember? I’m training with the Avatar, alongside you. And I can’t even seem to do that right.” I tried to say the last part of the sentence to myself, but it was Zuko’s sigh that proved I failed to.
“You are a great student, and an even better teacher Draya. I just want you to feel okay with your bending again. It’s a part of who you are.” I laughed, the coldness even surprising me.
“I know what I am, Zuko. I’m a firebender. I’m a trained… distraction. A distraction of destruction.” I chuckled weakly, finding humor in the parallels of my life. “It’s not my bending I’m ashamed of. It’s…” I didn’t know how to finish that sentence. Zuko peered around the waterfall, his eyes never leaving my face.
“Can we sit over there and talk? Away from this outrageously loud water?” I smiled and nodded. I waited for Zuko to find a spot to sit, settling on a rock that was deep enough to hang his legs over. I crouched in the water, low enough to wrap my arms around my legs, and took a deep breath before submerging my head. I enjoyed the cool of the water washing over me, preparing myself, not ready to tell Zuko about my scars; quickly realizing how guilty I felt for being able to hide them in the first place. I stood up and waded towards Zuko, pausing in front of a rock a few feet away from him. “Waterbending moves? Someone must be taking notes during Katara’s lessons.”  Zuko was looking away, clear he wasn’t sure what to do in that moment. I took that chance to pull myself up onto a rock next to him, crossing my legs and resting my hands in my lap. I looked up, relishing his side profile as he watched the cascading water a few feet away. His skin was glistening from the water as the sun hit us, and his feathery black hair looked as if it had fallen into place without any effort from him. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him so… serene. He closed his eyes, as if he were soaking in the sun, and I looked down at my lap as I spoke.
“Once I started traveling with them, I would try some of her techniques and… I don’t know. If I could describe the way the fire felt in my hands when I’m in the water I would. It’s unlike anything else. It helps me feel in control of my bending, actually in control, when it starts feeling a little too overwhelming.” I had never said this out loud to anyone, and seeing Zuko relax as he sun bathed, seeing the soft expression he had, urged me to keep going. I opened my mouth to continue, quickly biting my lip to stop myself.
“Draya, it’s okay. You can talk to me.” The honey in his eyes have clearly seeped into his mouth, a sweet kindness trickling in his words. I took a deep breath as I watched Zuko open his eyes and turn his head to face me. I gazed at Zuko’s face as he noticed the scars that licked my skin, the stripes of red blending in together so well that it’s hard to make out where they begin and where they end. His once confused expression turned into a melancholy gaze of understanding, this time turning his face away to help hide his own scar with his dark hair.  “The day you were going to leave, you said they taught you how to be… are those… did they…” Zuko’s voice trailed off as he looked away, anger and disgust contorting his once soft face.
“I’d have to fight them in training, one after the other without any breaks in between. If they were able to capture me, they were supposed to… pretend like they have to get information out of me about the army’s plan. Even if I never said a word, they’d use their bending against me.” A small, sad smile found its way to my lips as I stared at my marked arms, lifting them into the air in front of me. “Getting burned gives you a different appreciation of the bending art, actually realizing what these movements really do to someone else. Getting burned repeatedly, well… that appreciation can begin to morph.” I traced the scars on my left forearm lightly, realizing it’s been so long since I’ve really looked at them, before quickly crossing my arms and hugging my body as I brought my knees up to my chest.
“I’m sorry you had to suffer through that. I can’t even begin to imagine the pain you had to endure.” Zuko shifted on the rock he was sitting on and slid closer to me. It was clear on his face that he was considering what to say next, opening and closing his mouth slightly as he thought. I held my breath as I realized how close he suddenly was, looking at my own hands instead of him. “I’m beyond enraged that my father would make you… make anyone, suffer through something so…”, Zuko stopped talking as soon as his voice started wavering.
“My mother always said that firebenders did nothing but destroy. Destroy homes, destroy forests, destroy lives. She came from a family of firebenders, not a bender herself, and she always voiced her disgust for the art.” I can still hear my mothers voice ringing in my head, and I knew the only way I could make it stop was by saying it out loud, letting it escape. “She ran away from her family when she was 19, finding refuge in my home village after traveling for weeks. She met my father not long after, a Northern Water Tribe warrior sent to do… something. That part was never clear. Anyway, she used to say she would pray to the spirits that she would never have to carry a firebending child. She thought for certain that meeting my waterbending father was a sign they had heard her. ‘What a disappointment it was when you realized you could firebend.’” I felt a hot tear fall down my cheek, as my mother’s words hung in the air. I quickly wiped it away with the back of my hand and tried to laugh, realizing I’ve never told anyone this before. “All my life the only thing I wanted was for her to love me, to accept me as I was… her daughter, a firebender.” I watched as Zuko listened to my words, watching the rippling water as I spoke.
“It was cruel and wrong what your mother said to you, even worse how she treated you. After what my father put you through, it’s easy to understand why you feel the way you do about firebending.” His hand fell into the water, and I could see him scooping it up and pouring it out, repeatedly. It was obvious he was nervous to say what he wanted to next. I waited, holding my breath, until Zuko spoke. “My father gave me this scar, right after your general left the palace with your group, actually. He challenged me to an Agni kai for speaking out of turn during a military meeting that I begged my uncle to let me sit in on, and the only reason he agreed was because I promised I’d stay quiet. But how could I say nothing when the General was talking about sacrificing an entire division, as a distraction, all because they were new…” As Zuko realized what he was saying, he quickly turned to face me. “I’d stand up to him a thousand times over if it meant stopping him from trying to use new recruits as bait. It didn’t stop him, but that doesn’t mean I won’t keep trying.” He started to reach his hand out towards me, hesitating before bringing it back to his side and dropping it in his lap. “Growing up we learned that the Fire Nation was the greatest civilization in history, and those soldiers loved and defended our great nation. The same great nation that was planning their murders.”
“I wasn’t a soldier, Zuko. I was just a kid whose village was invaded and burnt down; a kid who had to train with the same Fire Nation army that kidnapped me so I could pretend to be some twisted version of a soldier. I spent years training in private with Fire Nation soldiers, traveling from city to city as their prisoner, doing what they called training; years before they even considered putting me into the war. I wasn’t a tool for them, Zuko. I was just a toy. A shiny, distracting toy. And I endured burns every day as a reminder, wishing they were planning our murder instead of just our torture day in and day out.” I remember the other kidnapped children who trained next to me, some lasting longer than others, no more remaining from my village after long.
“After Aang defeats the Fire Lord, and we take down Azula, everything will regain balance. We can build a better world, one without the dark and painful tactics of the past. We as a nation need to learn from our mistakes and educate others to do better. And, Draya?” Zuko pauses, finally getting the courage to grab my hand, holding it tight in his. I looked up to find his golden eyes already looking at me. “You’re safe now. Nobody will hurt you again. And my father will pay.” He squeezed my hand when he finished his sentence and I felt a wave of relief flood over me. I couldn’t find the right words, so instead I pulled Zuko close, hugging him tighter than I’ve ever hugged any one before.
“Thank you, Zuko. It’s clear just how genuine your heart is, and I’m so glad to call you a friend.” His arms tightened around me before letting go, smiling down at me. He asked if I could show him some of Katara’s waterbending, so we spent the rest of our time talking while we waded through the water. It was surprisingly the most comfortable I’ve ever felt around him; I finally felt like I belonged somewhere.
Destruction, Everywhere (OC Fic)
Authors Note: I had to mention the ICONIC Ember Island Players rendition of the Gaang’s adventures, and even referenced my favorite part (you’ll know). I really love this chapter! It’s so soft and cute!!
Previous Chapters
The next morning, we set off for Ember Island, leaving no sign of our campsite behind. The flying bison ride wasn’t long, all of us bouncing jokes off of each other to make the ride go faster. When we got close enough to see the house, it was clear Zuko wasn’t kidding when he said nobody came out here anymore. There were patches of moss growing all over the roof, and once we landed, we saw that the moss extended to the inside.
Zuko insisted on doing some firebending training to make up for all the lost time as soon as we could, so now. Katara and Toph sat off to the side of the courtyard, relaxing as we trained. Once we were finally done, Zuko sat on the edge of the fountain that adorned the middle of the courtyard while I took a seat next to Katara, when Sokka and Suki walked in. Sokka was basically buzzing with excitement, holding a piece of paper in his hands. Apparently, there was a play written about our adventures, which Katara wasn’t sure was a good idea to go see. We all agreed that it could be fun, eventually convincing her. It had been awhile since we did something spontaneously fun.
Later that night, at the theater, we walked onto the balcony where our seats were. Toph and Katara sat down in the front row, Suki and Sokka in the row behind them. I sat down next to Katara, and as Aang was going to say something, Zuko sat next to me. Aang sat behind me and poked at the back of my head.
“Pst… Draya… PST!” I snapped my head back as he poked with a little too much pressure.
“What!?” I hissed, trying not to make a scene.
“Can… we maybe… can I sit…” Aang was motioning with his fingers, clearly wanting to sit next to Katara. Before I could say anything, the lights dimmed. I shrugged, mouthing the word “sorry” as I pointed up to the lights and turned around to face the stage. I heard Aang sigh and made a mental note to let him sit here at intermission. The play started when Katara and Sokka discovered Aang, and the last thing we saw before the break was when Aang helped save the Northern Water Tribe.
We all sat outside on some stairs, the others ranting about how much they hated the way they were portrayed. I just sat there, listening to their complaints, not knowing what to do or say. I wasn’t up their yet, they hadn’t met me. I wasn’t even sure I’d be in the play at all considering how late I joined the team. When we got back to the balcony for the next section of the show, I slid into the second row which made Zuko look at me with an eyebrow raised. I shrugged, lightly patting the spot next to me. He slid in as Aang walked onto the balcony, and he smiled when he saw where I was sitting. I gave him a small shrug as the lights went down for the next part of the play, Aang taking his seat next to Katara.
The second part started when the group met Toph, who was played by a huge burly man (which Toph loved). Her character “explained” how she sees, letting out a “sonic wave” towards on stage Team Avatar, and I laughed so hard that Zuko had to wrap his arms around me while saying “shhh don’t draw too much attention”. I swatted at his arms, telling him to let me enjoy the play. The second part ended when Azula thought she took Aang down, and we all made our way out to a hallway. Katara went to look for Aang, who had disappeared before the second part was over, while Sokka and Suki decided to try to get backstage to give Stage Sokka some Real Sokka jokes. Zuko, Toph and I sat against a wall, Toph saying how everyone was being dramatic about the show. I listened as Toph told Zuko about the time she met Iroh and seeing how Zuko’s face lit up when he heard how highly his uncle thought of him, when he thought his uncle would be disappointed in him, made my heart jump. I reached out and squeezed his hand. It dropped when he reached over to rub the part of his arm that Toph had hit, claiming it was her way of showing affection.
“You’re not officially part of the group until you get an affectionate bruise from Toph, you’re truly one of us now!” I say with a smile, earning a snicker from Toph. She stood up, yawning as she said she was going to go back into the theater and wait for the show there. Zuko and I sat in silence for a bit before he spoke.
“I’m sorry you have to see all of my past decisions like this. It’s not who I am anymore, really.” I could hear the sincerity in his voice, and I laughed lightly, shaking my head. He looked over with confusion. I turned my body towards him and gingerly grabbed his hands.
“As someone wise once told me, your past doesn’t define you. I know you’ve changed Zuko, you have nothing to apologize for. Besides that wasn’t you, not really. That was somebody you were trying to be, when you were trying to get something you thought you needed from other people. The Zuko I know now isn’t the same as the Zuko you were a year ago; the Zuko I know is kind, admirable, and when he cares, he cares deeply. That Zuko on stage doesn’t even have the scar on the right side!” He laughed, shaking his head at the comment a child dressed up as Aang had made earlier. He looked over at me, our faces closer than I realized, when we heard a throat clear. Our necks snapped over to see Sokka and Suki standing there, a smug look on Sokka’s face. I stood up and, without missing a beat, said “Not a word, Sokka.”. I walked onto the balcony and slipped onto the bench, Zuko sliding in next to me with a smile still on his face. When Sokka and Suki sat down, Sokka slowly leaned forward and stared at me.
“Boyyyyyfrieeeeend…” Sokka’s voice teased, causing me to cross my arms and sink in my seat to help hide the fact that I was blushing. Thank the spirits that the lights went down for the rest of the play to start. The play picked up at the invasion, and still I wasn’t in the play. Not that it bothered me, I've always tried to blend into the shadows anyway. Sokka was ready to get up and leave once the play caught up to the present, until Suki reminded him that the play wasn’t over. I realized that my hand had found its way into Zuko’s as we watched Stage Azula defeat Zuko, our gradually tightening grip bringing it to my attention. The play ended with Firelord Ozai defeating Aang and we all stared at the stage in horror, not knowing how to take what we just saw. Zuko was still holding onto my hand, the both of us looking down at them until the lights started to turn back on, making us scoot away from each other and drop our hands to our sides. As we walked back to Zuko’s house, we all unanimously agreed that the play was terrible.
We dispersed for the night once we got home, everyone tired from the day of training and watching awful theater. After taking my hair out of its daily bun and brushing it out in the bathroom, I walked to the room I was staying in. The sight of Zuko leaning against the wall next to the door of my temporary room came into sight as I got closer, illuminated by the dim lights that still somehow worked, and I smiled. He looked up at the sound of my footsteps, returning the smile as he pushed himself off the wall and walked towards me.
“Draya, hey… I had no idea your hair was so long; I don’t think I’ve ever seen it down.” He said, his eyes roaming the long, wavy black frizz that cascaded to my lower back. I chuckled, nervously tucking some hair behind my ear before I starting to pull it back up into a bun when Zuko lightly touched my arm, causing the grip I had on my hair to loosen. “You should wear it down more often, it looks nice.” I let my hair fall again, slightly shaking my head and looking down with a small laugh, not wanting to look at him for the fear that he’d see the blush covering my cheeks.
“I’m assuming you weren’t waiting there to talk to me about my hair. Is everything alright?” I asked, trying to stray the subject away from my appearance.
“I was going to ask if you’d like to go on a walk with me. The clouds may be covering the stars, but it’s still a nice night.” His once confident demeanor fizzled as he spoke, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. I motioned to the hall in front of us.
“Lead the way.” Zuko gave a soft nod, a small smile on his face once more, as we walked outside. He led me down a path to the beach that was near his house and we walked along the shore for a while, the only sound being the waves crashing onto the sand. Even though neither of us spoke for a long time, it was comfortable; being around Zuko just felt easy. We eventually found a flat rock to sit on, and almost as suddenly as we sat down, Zuko shot back up to his feet. He ran over to some bushes behind the rock we sat at, walking back with a hand behind him. He sat next to me again, turning to face me, before holding out a wildflower; it had the most peculiar petals that hung in sections, the white of the petals vibrant from the little bits of moonlight that shone through the clouds. I took it, staring at it hesitantly before looking up at Zuko, and he chuckled slightly at the confusion that was clear on my face.
“Back when we would come here as a family, my uncle showed me where to find these flowers on the island. It’s an iris. Uncle said there used to be an abundance of them on the island, but now they’re sparce. I always thought they were the prettiest flower when I was young so when I saw the glimpse of white, I knew I had to pick it for you.” My confusion melted into a feeling I couldn’t describe. I felt in spread from my stomach to my chest, its warmth radiating to my face until I was sure I was as red as the robes he wore.
“Zuko… thank you. That’s incredibly sweet of you.” I finally looked at him, only to see his brilliant eyes already looking at me, his smile melting into them. I put the flower down carefully behind to us before extending my arms, wrapping them around his neck. Zuko instantly wrapped his arms around my torso and buried his face into my neck, my hair making it impossible for our skin to touch.
“I’m so glad to hear you like it. I know it’s just a flower but…” I leaned away from the hug, letting my hands linger on his shoulders.
“Zuko you could give me a pebble you thought looked like Appa and I’d treasure it forever.” He let out breathy laugh, turning his head a little as he did. “It’s not the gift, but the thought.” We looked into each other’s eyes, wanting to savor every bit of this moment, and as soon as I realized how close we were, Zuko spoke.
“Draya… what are we doing? What’s this between us?” His choice of words prompted me to scoot back a bit more, dropping my hands to my lap. His arms dropped next to him as we shifted awkwardly at my sudden movement.
“I- I don’t know how to answer that.” I say, my voice flat. Even I winced at my unintentional cold tone. I was only being honest; I couldn’t answer that because even I don’t know what we were doing. There’s a war going on and I’m sitting here giggling with Zuko and admiring flowers and thinking about kissing his dumb, angry mouth… wait. Zuko let out a deep sigh which brought my attention back to him, and I looked up to see him running a hand through his hair, holding his neck. He let his hand drop into his lap and turned to me. I looked down at my lap, nervous for what he might say.
“I can’t do this anymore, whatever it is. I want to be with you, Draya. I know we haven’t known each other long; I know there’s a lot going on right now. I just… can’t stop thinking about you, even when you’re nowhere near. Even before I joined the group and we officially met, something about you always stuck with me. Something about you always seemed so familiar to me, even when we were just strangers passing each other by. We can help rebuild the Fire Nation together. With you by my side, anything would be possible.” One of his hands hesitantly reached out to grab one mine, and when I finally looked up at him, I saw with the most adoring expression I’ve ever seen on someone’s face. His hand left mine to cup my cheek lightly, the warmth of his hand comforting. Before I had time to think, I closed the distance between our mouths, moving as softly I could. The kiss was short, welcoming, sweet. There was an explosion in my stomach, and I swear it felt like a twinge of lightening sparked on our lips. I bit my bottom lip nervously, not sure how Zuko felt about the kiss, as I leaned away and looked at him. He opened his eyes slowly, smiling as he rubbed his thumb softly over my pink face.
“There are a lot of things going on right now, but the more I think about it, the more I realize that there will always be a lot of things going on. Zuko…” I sigh, never letting my gaze leave his. I lift my free hand to cradle the back of his neck, giving him a small sad smile. Before I could continue, Zuko cut me off.
“I want to be with someone who likes me for me and not someone I was pretending to be, someone who reminds me that I’m not that same person when I get lost in my guilty thoughts. Someone who feels like home, a feeling I forgot about years ago. It’s how I imagined I’d feel returning to the palace after being banished and instead, it’s how I feel with you, wherever ‘here’ is in that moment. An abandoned air temple, a makeshift cliff campsite, even in a place I never thought I’d want to visit again. I’ve never had a weakness for someone quite like I have one for you.” His last sentence made me hold my breath, shocked at the fact that Prince Zuko felt this way about me. I looked away, letting my hand drop from his neck to my lap. Zuko dropped his hand from my cheek to grab one of my hands, intertwining our fingers.
“I would never fit in at the palace, Zuko. We both know that. I’m nothing but an orphaned runaway, a wannabe soldier, who’s been living in the shadows for years now.” I stared at our hands as I spoke, fully realizing what it would mean to be with someone in the royal family. If Aang defeats Firelord Ozai, who did I think would take over for him? If not Azula, then who? Zuko laughed a little, bringing my attention back to him.
“Draya, you are so much more than that. You’re a warrior, a fighter, and a caring friend. Besides, who said anything about the palace? I’m sure my uncle will want to assume the position of Firelord, considering it was his birth right. We could live here! In this house, we could fix it up…” I raised my eyebrows in shock, causing Zuko to stop. “I mean… if you want to.” I dropped his hands and turned my body, so I was facing the ocean again. I looked out at the waves before grabbing the radiating white wildflower that still sat behind me, holding the thick stem with both hands. I focused on the petals that swayed in the wind, trying to find the right words.
“Zuko, you were my first crush. None of the boys in my village made my heart flutter the same way you did that day we ran into each other. We keep meeting at very strange times in my life… I never forgot about you, just how you made me feel.”
“And how do I make you feel now?” He asked, his voice was soft and quiet; I almost didn’t hear his words over the crashing current.
“You make me feel calm, comfortable. You make me feel like I’m not just a monster, not just someone who destroys everything in her path. Just like you said, you make me feel like I’m home. And that’s a feeling I never thought I’d know.” I finally tore my eyes away from the flower and looked over at him. He was also looking at the flower, a smile decorating his lips. “I want to be with you Zuko, just… not right now. With Sozin’s comet almost here, we have bigger things to focus on. Especially if we want a future to share.” His gaze finally met mine and his smile faded slightly as he nodded.
“But Draya, what if… what if my father wins?” I scoffed, bringing a hand up to Zuko’s cheek.
“We better make sure that doesn’t happen. And if it does, then at least we have tonight.” This made him smile, before he leaned in. His lips met mine, with intensity, this kiss lasting much longer than the first. His mouth was soft and warm, causing me to melt into his touch. My hand moved from his cheek to the back of his head, letting it get lost in his soft hair. His hand found my cheek, cradling it as he deepened the kiss. We shifted so our bodies were pressed against each other, I could feel his heart beating quickly in his chest. His free hand found the small of my back, mine finding his shoulder. When we finally broke apart, we were trying to catch our breaths while we laughed quietly. Zuko placed a small kiss on my forehead before embracing me.
“At least we have tonight.” He echoed my early statement as we sat there in each other’s arms, wishing this night would never end.
