on this, the 11th birthday of fall out boy's esteemed fifth studio album save rock and roll, i just want to remind everyone of the one thing that never fails to Get Me about it.
there was a lot of scorn and derision about the title when it first got promoted, and fob was well aware this would happen. critics and caustic news outlets collectively scoffed about it, save rock and roll. like this four-piece from chicago, this dorky pop band, is gonna save rock and roll?
of course they missed the point, which is in the very god damn title. it's not a declarative statement. it's not a pronouncement of how we, fall out boy, saved rock and roll. it is a call to action. it is an earnest request for you, the listener, to participate in this act alongside them. it is an expression of desire to inspire creation in turn.
that's the ethos they've carried at the forefront of every creative endeavor they've undertaken since returning from hiatus. certainly that element was present before then, but save rock and roll marked the moment where they very deliberately centered that squarely in their narrative.
because fall out boy doesn't just want to save rock and roll. they want you to save rock and roll with them.

saw a post the other day where someone was frothing mad about a poll that went around asking about preferred lgbtq community terms where "queer" swept with like 70% votes, and it was all the usual stuff, but the thing that got me is the poster said something like "you guys are trying to make 'queer' the academic term" and. comrade "queer" has been the academic term. for decades. it's really easy to see looking at the library in my school's queer student center, you see books published in the 70s and 80s referring to "gay studies," then "gay and lesbian studies" in the 80s into the early 90s, then "queer studies" in the mid 90s onwards. I don't think it was even a particularly pointed language choice, a single syllable word is just a lot easier to print and say than several words or an acronym that keeps changing and rearranging every few years. like. this is so so not a 2010s phenomenon of young people not knowing what they're talking about.

Listen, I'm sorry to the people who draw Veils in torn/bloody robes because of the whole Vake thing but you're simply wrong. Do you think Veils would Ever go out like that. Do you think it doesn't have fifteen changes of clothes ready immediately, with options depending on the day and occasion, to climb into when it comes back from killing things. Of course it does. Veils is getting home, taking a shower in the Bazaar, putting on a new perfectly clean robe with accent panels and silk trim, and then dabbing 1 (one) tasteful bloodstain on the hem of it with a claw because it's arrogant and it thinks it can get away with it. What is a Veils if it's not serving cunt. Of course it is.
