okay idk how magic Actually works in DA bc i don't pay attention To Shit but i like the idea of. there's 2 different things you need to be a mage

Connection to the fade

A pool of mana inside you

plenty of ppl have one or the other but it's only both that can let you use magic

templars aren't considered mages bc they don't have a pool of Mana naturally inside of them, they have to ingest lyrium, but they can do magic aligned things

in this case it'd be silencing (permanently severing the fade connection) imprisonment (severing the connect for up to 3hrs) and smiting (severing the connection for only a few moments, long enough to disorient)

smiting and imprisoning a mage are slightly dangerous however due to the fact that if you sever the fade connection the mage still Has that magic they just can't control it and they will probably still attempt to use it

silencing is less dangerous however bc it. does that™ so the mage won't even think to attempt to tap into the Mana store

#jackals barks #idk if this is canon that i vaguely remembered? at least for how it works? #but i pulled the imprisonment/smiting part out of the air tho bc in canon smiting effects ALL charas #it basically makes them not able to use their abilities for a lil #but i was thinkin about jackal an my brain went 👁️👁️ #basically there is a scenario in which they're subject to long term imprisonment and don't. tell anyone bc they can't handle looking 'weak' #it lasts about a week and explodes whenever theyre sparring with cullen. the templar in question realized that it was fading an went Oh Shit #so he tried to redo it in the same instance they lashed the FUCK out and they become a semi! abomination #bc they use mostly fire based magic so they look like almost like a wrath abomination while it's out of control an they're PISSED #an since it was a week they have A Lot of mana to burn through. v painful 0/10 do not recommend also they attempt to commit murder but solas #gets them in a lil ward based cage an they just have to rage until it calms down. w dorian+bull talking to them v v v softly #because they came back from a hunting trip to find that APPARENTLY they can't leave jackal alone for .4 seconds
