#but it's like not a mafia?? it's more organized vigilante crime

Don't know who needs to hear this, but it's okay to enjoy things in fiction that you don't approve of in real life. And I'm not just talking about dark!fic or toxic ships or anything like that (though if you do enjoy them, no worries, that's also fine). I mean more like...
Enjoying the Ace Attorney games and loving Phoenix, Edgeworth, Gumshoe, and their fellows, while also having major issues with how the legal and law enforcement systems are running in real life.
Getting a kick out of Bruce Wayne and Tony Stark being stupid rich, while also believing that billionaires should not be allowed to exist in reality.
Cheering for superheroes while acknowledging that vigilante justice is a very bad idea in our world.
Having fun with a mafia movie or playing Yakuza, while also fully supporting the erasure of organized crime from the face of the earth.
There are so, so many things that are only fun in fiction, or which are portrayed as much more fun in fiction than in the real world. And it's okay to enjoy that as long as you're being sure to take it all with a grain of salt. And yes, it's important to be at least a little critical of the media you consume, just because there are a lot of people trying to sell you stuff these days in sneakier and sneakier ways, including ideas. The main thing is just keeping a good grip on what's real, what's fiction, and what belongs in which of those categories. Fiction is a place to explore the world, as it is, as it could be, as it should be, as it should never be, and it's an exploration that's meant to be enjoyed. So go ahead, enjoy it! That's what it's there for.

Never experienced much gimmickry bank robberies when I've lived in Rio de Janeiro and Johannesburg it was more hearing about muggings, break-ins or carjackings, but those cities felt a bit Gotham City-esque in answering the question of "with so much crime why would anybody ever chose to live in Gotham City" more than New York.
Certainly, places with extreme levels of inequality tend to see a lot of "muggings, break-ins or car-jacking" (a fair bit of kidnapping for ransom too).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And we have to understand that when superhero comics were invented in the U.S, the U.S was just starting to come out of a major crime wave that had begun during Prohibition that saw the birth of organized crime and the gangster alike. The largely Jewish creators many of whom from the Lower East Side were very familiar with New York City underworld figures like Arnold Rothstein, Bugsy Siegel, Lucky Luciano, Meyer Lansky, and knew these guys basically owned City Hall and the NYPD - this, not fascism, is at the heart of the vigilante tradition in American comic books.
Likewise, creators and readers throughout the United States would have been very familiar with the bank robbers and kidnappers like the Barker Gang or Bonnie and Clyde or Pretty Boy Floyd or John Dillinger, because these people were national celebrities thanks to the newsreels and the radio. A huge amount of the political capital that J. Edgar Hoover would rely on to corrupt the U.S government for the next forty years was won in the "G-Men's" war against these "Public Enemies." (Notably, Hoover did virtually nothing to solve the other problem of organized crime and refused to accept the existence of the mafia well into the 50s.)
So as with so much else, the image of urban crime in superhero comics is the memory of working-class Jewish writers and artists of the hoodlums who terrorized their neighborhoods while the government did nothing to protect people.

Why Was Alastor A Serial Killer?
I'm willing to bet that Hazbin Hotel is trying to avoid the true crime route of portraying serial killers with gritty 'realism'. Characters kill for theatrical reasons, not because the creative team is doing a deep dive into criminal minds.
I foresee Alastor's serial killer spree to be plot-spurred. Not because he's gonna be revealed to have antisocial personality disorder, or a psychopath, or something polarizing like that.
Realistically, any of the current Hazbin Hotel cast could have a personality disorder. Real-life serial killers aren't profiled (by USA FBI) to be more likely to have mental illnesses. After all, there are other serial killers than the ones you hear about most often. Serial killers are also the organized criminals, or abusive husbands, or political/religious extremists. They may or may not view their victims as fellow individual humans. They may or may not be influenced by bigotry.
Hazbin Hotel is a musical comedy first and foremost. It follows Loony Toons rules over Hannibal, or The Cell, or Silent Hill. It's possible that Alastor's serial killer past won't ever be a plot point. It's as relevant as any other character's reason for being in hell.
If his serial killer spree is ever addressed, I theorize it might be because:
They were magical sacrifices. Alastor's magical abilities take heavy hits from Hollywood 'voodoo'. One of the smear accusations against New Orleans' budding Vodou culture (especially against Marie Laveau of the Victorian era) were sacrificial rituals performed in areas like on the shores of Lake Pontchartrain. If Alastor was dabbling in magic during his living years, he might have killed and cannibalized solely for sacrificial reasons. Possibly involving his supposed 'deal', as well.
They were 'vigilante' targets. The lyrics in the pilot include the lines And we'll chlorinate this cesspool / With some old redemption flair. He values good manners. He doesn't believe in taking advantage of the weaker. One background concern of the Hazbin Hotel (and Helluva Boss) universe is the sheer number of humans who end up in hell, all equal in their sin. Like the angelic exorcists that descend to cull the herd, it'd be appropriate for a character to have a hand in playing a similar role whilst mortal. Or, at least, that's how he saw himself.
It wasn't spur killing, all the victims were connected. We've never had a full plot centered on why a soul ended up in hell. Canonical reasons have been revealed in side material, such as Angel Dust's organized crime and drug use. As the seasons continue, there may come a day where a character's mortal sins become very relevant. Many a protagonist has found themselves racking up a body count all of a sudden, thanks to his hero's journey. Perhaps that resulted in Alastor's notoriety.
Alastor was a living demon, and he consumed humans. His serial killing is one thing, cannibalizing his victims is another. He's obsessed with consumption and partaking in flesh. The pilot ends with his hunger for his mother's recipe. His side comic has him eating eggs at a cafe, then visiting Cannibal Town, then visiting a butcher to buy more food. He canonically dislikes sweets and is a snobby foodie that dislikes processed food. There's only three proper food scenes in season 1, and he's two of them - the deer, and when he eats other sinners in his monstrous form. If he made some sort of devilish deal while alive, perhaps the cost was the need for flesh. Thus gave rise to a human with inhuman bloodlust.
His reasons won't ever be revealed. Or, they'll be unimportant. We don't particularly care what gang Angel Dust ran with as a mafia grunt, and perhaps we're also meant to take Alastor's serial killing at face value. At of this writing, we poke and prod at the guy 'cause he's this huge mystery, but maybe we'll grow to care solely for his contemporary actions, and not for his backstory.
We may get our answer one day, but for now, he remains an enigma.

Whenever anyone from the kids’ school asks, Jake always just smiles politely and explains that his husband works for a big international company and that’s why he’s overseas a lot.  He doesn’t say that Bradley is arguably the ‘director’ of said company, nor that the ‘company’ in question is the Mafia. He knows a few of the other parents have their suspicions and that he and Bradley are the subject of their fair share of rumours and gossip. Jake just doesn’t let it get to him, he has his beautiful family and gorgeous husband, the nosy PTA mothers can go fuck themselves. For every, oh my, how can your husband bear to leave such a lovely husband at home with the kids for so many months of the year, Jake can read between the lines.
Live Until We Die by Renai_chan {E}
Speak Softly, Love
Jake leaves behind his crappy life in Texas and moves to California. There, he meets Bradley, a gorgeous man who works at a charity helping the homeless. They fall in love, and everything is sunshine and rainbows until he learns that Bradley is, in fact, Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw, heir to the empire of his godfather, Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, who rules the underbelly of Los Angeles with ice-cold ruthlessness. Suddenly, Jake find himself embroiled in the dangers of the LA Mafia
Live Until We Die: Outtakes
A compilation of one-shots and drabbles of the Mafia AU.
Along the Razor's Edge
Jake's father makes contact after more than a year when the family farm goes into foreclosure, and Jake is torn between helping save his childhood home and leaving his father to his fate. Bradley steps in, but his plan to help Jake isn't received well by Jake's father, and Jake finds himself caught between his new family and his own flesh and blood.
An Offer He Can't Refuse by Dalearden {_}
Detective Jake Seresin has been on the trail of the Layton gang for a long time. When he starts getting too close he finds himself drawn into their world to the point where he starts to question everything he thought he knew about who he is and what he does. The fact he's also undeniably attracted to one Bradley "Rooster" Bradshaw only serves to further complicate matters.
Whiskey Neat by ALCwriter {M}
Jake is fresh out of the Navy and living with his sister to help her through a nasty divorce. While he scrambles to find a way to keep his sister and niece safe he unintentionally falls into the tangles of Bradley Bradshaw. He knows Bradley is most likely bad news and he most definitely knows he should stay away from him. But when shit hits the fan- he has nowhere else to turn. a.k.a Jake gets mixed up with Bradley who just so happens to be a mafia boss.
The Only Exception by mackwinnon {E}
Organized crime AU. Escort Jake meets Bradley in a club while he's with another client. Bradley's instantly intrigued and makes Jake an offer he can't refuse. It's just business. Until it isn't.
wash out the salt from my hands by elizabethgee {E}
Jake's having a great day. He's just won the TOPGUN competition, he met a handsome, mysterious stranger at The Hard Deck who's definitely interested in taking him to bed... What could possibly go wrong?
cosa nostra (this thing of ours) by lemqnie {_}
Bradley is the prettiest thing Jake has ever laid eyes on. It's a shame he's a rival gang's heir and Jake has to kill him.
When Danger Comes Home (Don’t Ever let it Roost) by ToukoJalorda003 {M}
Bradley adored his job, and it had been his dream to go into law enforcement as a kid. He had everything he’d ever wanted - except for a romantic partner, but he’d never even consider dragging them into his dangerous personal life. …Until he took a smuggling case involving Jake ‘Hangman’ Seresin, a known member of the city’s organized crime syndicate. Maybe he’d bitten off more than he could chew, this time.
I only pray (don’t fall away from me) by Anonymous {E}
Jake Seresin has an acquired taste. It comes in the form of the clubs most desired; Rooster. His wide doe eyes, ridiculous pornstache that fits him so perfectly, and his tan, toned body. And what Jakes wants, Jake gets.

Im sorry if this sounds dumb but I was scrolling through your ur asks and I saw on one the tags something like: “following:why romanizing the mafia is actually bad” and idk if you meant it as a joke but if you didn’t,did you ever write something about that topic? I would love to read your perspective on that
Hi! You're talking about me mentioning that romanticizing mafia is actually bad, right? (From this post?) It's not dumb at all! It makes me happy to know you're willing to learn more on the subject.
No, I didn't mean it as a joke. No, I never wrote on the topic, either. I'm flattered to know you would like to hear my perspective!! I don't know how serious I was about writing about it back then (it's been more than one year), but right now I would rather refrain from delving into it for the time being.
Perhaps, maybe there's really nothing much to be said about it at all? Mafia organizations are criminal organizations that corrupt and deteriorate states, on par with terrorist organizations (the difference being that the latter have political goals, whereas mafia organizations' aim generally is to hoard money). They deal with drug trafficking, human trafficking, sex trafficking, weapon trafficking, money laundering and so on, and they constantly use illegal means that harm and kill civilians. In areas with deeply rooted presence of mafia, people can't make the choice to be honest citizens, because mafia organizations will coerce civilians to pay tributes to them. Why the romanticization of all of this is detrimental - and, honestly, insulting to anyone that has to put up with this kind of reality - is pretty self-explanatory. Portraying them as some kind of vigilantes that may act illegally but is ultimately benevolent, that cares for people and works for a “greater good” of society is straight up disrespectful. They're not philanthropists doing crime as a side gig. There's no benefactor boss who acts to “prevent uncontrollable violence” and “avoid useless bloodshed”. Saying they use to bring balance in the city or that they care for the city's well being and stability, or that they want to protect the city, is not only perfectly counterfactual, but also unbearably insulting. The fact that mafia organizations don't do people's good goes without saying. In fact, doing as much harm to society as they can is like, their whole thing. And it's something that destroys lives in the real world.
So y'know. Portraying the mafia in that kind of positive light. It isn't the best.

Bat Brat Age & Role Shuffle AU:
Once upon a time there was a young Gothamite who went to the circus to see the Flying Graysons, a pair of acrobats of world acclaim. The mafias hadn’t started paying attention to Haly’s as a potential squeeze in the protection racket yet, so absolutely nothing went wrong.
Several years later Jack and Janet Drake get divorced, but that’s unrelated.
Also unrelated, Bruce Wayne eventually debuts as Batman. Not too long after that, Crystal Brown overdoses while Stephanie is at school and Cluemaster is busy with two-bit supervillainy.
Blaming both herself and Arthur for not being there, Spoiler sets out to kill her abusive dad, running into Batman along the way. They get along as well as you’d expect two people who are similar in all the worst ways, but Bruce can’t stop Stephanie despite her being, like, ten. He’s new at the vigilante thing and she saw his face (there may have been a brick involved), so they have a mutually assured destruction thing going on.
Spoiler bargains to only beat up Cluemaster, not kill, if Batman teaches her to be the best possible crime fighter ever. He agrees. Once Arthur is in jail, Bruce steps up to officially foster Stephanie.
Spoiler keeps flying at Batman’s side, continuing her extensive training. They both lean into the Brooding Loner theme, so Stephanie is only an associate of the Teen Titans, not a full member. They make her feel awkward, and her intense Bat-training makes them feel judged.
Meanwhile, Tim Drake started college at about the same time most people start High School, having gone super hard on academics to drown out his parents’ fighting before their divorce. A big fan of both the Flying Graysons and Batman, he takes the plunge on maybe not actually being he by handcrafting a costume for her Original Herosona Do-Not-Steal, Batgirl! to attend a convention.
Tim being an overachiever, and also a Gothamite who’s lived this long, the costume is fully functional for crime fighting, which comes in handy when a Rogue crashes the con.
Stephanie is younger and Tim a less experienced crime fighter, so Spoiler and Batgirl butt heads a lot once Batgirl starts flying through the night, but they’re always down to team up to dunk on Batman (Tim loses some of the hero worship once actually doing the hero job).
Tim has to pretend to be a perfect heterosexual cisgender young man for her parents by day (or at least for Jack, Tim’s more hopeful about Janet) and so uses Batgirl time as a chance to experiment and as an outlet for a lot of things. She flirts with Batman all the time, which makes Spoiler mime barfing because ew that’s her dadmentor, gross.
Spoiler is even more obnoxious when Bruce flirts with Catwoman and gets along even worse than canon!Dick does with Talia.
Bruce and Stephanie’s too-similar personality clashes get worse the older and more confident Stephanie gets, culminating in an explosive fight when she turns eighteen and ages out of the foster system. She spends a few weeks living with Arthur (out on parole again) out of spite, and then hightails it to New York to prove she can be a team player and join the Titans for real.
Sick of the extreme uptick in brooding, Alfred badgers Bruce to get the fuck out of the manor for something other than crime and tormenting the Wayne enterprises Board of Directors.
Bruce goes to Haly’s Circus.
You can guess how that ends.
It doesn’t even occur to Tim that twelve year old acrobatics prodigy Dickie Grayson wouldn’t stay with Haly’s Circus, surely John and Mary had some kind of preferential guardianship documentation. So while Tim is now done with her LIS degree, has a job, and presumably could be an eligible foster parent, Bruce already has custody by the time Batgirl encounters Robin in the field.
Batgirl makes sure Tony Zucco’s entire organization comes crumbling down while Batman and Robin deal with the man himself.
Stephanie finds out about Batman’s new sidekick from Tim instead of Bruce and reacts…
Badly.
Canon!Stephanie has some pretty damn strong jealousy issues. She hasn’t even been gone two months yet and Bruce already has a new partner? A new kid? Who does Bruce think he is, replacing her like that? Who does the kid think he is, stealing her dadmentor?
God, and he’s so much peppier than she is, in a brighter costume, Spoiler could always make Batman smile but Robin makes him laugh. He’s got the murdered parents thing in common with Bruce too, parents who never did any crime, unlike hers. This isn’t fair.
Tim thinks Stephanie needs to get over herself and not be a jerk to the kid on the rare occasion she visits Gotham, if she can’t handle being nice. Stephanie accuses Tim of being a kiss-ass to Batman, says Tim must be so thrilled to finally be the more experienced crime fighter for once, and oh, isn’t it a dream come true to work with one of the famous Flying Graysons? Tim throws a book at her head.
Two or three years later, when Tim has already been going out in the field less frequently, doing more casework from the computer, considering retiring Batgirl and working up the nerve to come out as a woman in her civilian life, her parents arrive earlier than they’re supposed to for dinner just as she’s getting back from patrol. In costume.
There’s a lot of shouting. Accusations. Assumptions. Hurtful things said. Some supportive things said, too. Jack blames Janet for Tim “dressing in drag to run around with lunatics!” Janet blames Jack for Tim never talking to them about all this. It doesn’t help that Tim got a small laceration on her temple which is bleeding like a motherfucker when she comes through the window; their baby could have been killed!
Eventually everyone calms down; Tim agrees to put her vigilante work on hold while they all attend family counseling (which she’s tried to get them to do before). Jack admits Grandpa Charlie would be proud of Tim’s heroism. Janet asks what name Tim prefers to be called, and starts listing notable women from ancient history when Tim admits ‘Batgirl’ is the only girl name she’s chosen so far.
Unfortunately, just a few weeks later, the Joker and his henchmen break into a Drake Industries medical manufacturing facility to steal something while Jack is there, on the day Tim came to meet her dad for lunch.
Tim takes a bullet to the spine, instead of Jack taking it to the gut.
While Tim is in the hospital, fifteen year old Dick Grayson is dealing with complicated feelings about family. The Gotham socialite sphere and media keeps gossiping about his status as a foster kid; Bruce’s first still had a living father, a criminal, of course she was in the system, but Richard is an orphan, why hasn’t Bruce adopted him? None of them think to ask Dick how he feels about that; his father is John Grayson, he doesn’t want a new dad…
But he would like more reassurance than he’s getting that Bruce wants him around as himself, not just a crime fighting partner.
Bruce is not good at other people’s feelings; his attempts to not impinge on the Graysons’ memory or make Dick feel pressured about adoption come across poorly.
Then Dick gets a letter from someone claiming to be his half-sister. Since when has he had a half-sister? Is this for real? Does he really have more family out there?
Melinda doesn’t betray Dick, but they both still end up dead at the Joker’s hands in a warehouse on the other side of the world anyway.
Stephanie was in space when it happened. She misses the funeral. It sits hollowly in her chest; she was never there for the kid, never acted as a big sister, now he’s dead and she missed the fucking funeral.
She never wanted a little brother. But she had one anyway. And now he’s dead.
Spoiler gets nearly as self-destructive as Batman.
A few months later the Gotham police commissioner’s thirteen year old daughter Barbara Gordon knocks on the door of Stephanie Brown’s apartment in New York, demanding she come back and pull Batman’s head out of his butt.
“He’s come close to killing people,” Babs says severely, photos taken with a ‘borrowed’ crime scene camera documenting Batman’s self-and-others destructive spiral spread out on the coffee table. “He wasn’t like this when working with the Spoiler.”
Along with the photos, there’s a methodically constructed timeline of Batman’s crime fighting partners lining up with Bruce Wayne’s fostering history. The extreme prejudice Spoiler uses whenever Cluemaster gets out of jail and the similarities between Robin and the Flying Graysons’ costumes is noted in the margins.
“Trust me, kid, if I could pull B’s head out of his ass, I would,” Stephanie says, sarcasm covering up her nerves at their secret identities being blown. “Now why are you here, instead of showing all this to Daddy?”
Babs rolls her eyes. “Because Dad would have to arrest him.” There is an implied duh.
“Well, then, you should be familiar with dads not doing what we want.”
Stephanie drives Babs back to Gotham because she’s thirteen and traveled all the way to New York by herself. Stephanie may be a bit paranoid about kids traveling alone right now.
Alfred compliments Babs’ detective work and makes her cocoa. Bruce reads the margins of the timeline and remembers trying to get Dickie into a subtler costume; the grief and guilt make him say unkind things to Babs. This does not sway her from the conviction that Batman needs a partner again.
Some more unkind words and an altercation with a Rogue later, Babs is that partner.
“The hell are you even gonna call yourself?” Stephanie asks, visiting while Babs is in training. Babs lives with her dad. Bruce isn’t fostering her. Stephanie is gonna be this kid’s big sister anyway. She’s gonna do it right this time, dammit.
“Sparrow,” Babs says. “I thought…” For the first time Stephanie’s ever heard, Barbara Gordon sounds less than 100% confident. “A songbird, in Robin’s honor. And ‘Sparrow’ starts with the same letters as ‘Spoiler’ so it’s...it’s after both of you.”
Stephanie is going to blame the Batcave training mats stench for how her eyes water. “Good name. Dickie’d like it.” She never knew him well enough to know that, but what can it hurt to say?
(On Halloween, the ripples of Superboy Prime’s punch reach back in time, righting what should never have gone so wrong, and Dick Grayson crawls out of his own grave. Unfortunately for everyone, Deathstroke is the first to find him.)
Tim is busy with physical therapy, family counseling, her library job, her new vigilante idea, and getting her name legally changed to Timothea Jacqueline Drake. She doesn’t find out about Sparrow until Babs is back from her misadventures in Paris and Hong Kong with Lady Shiva, and takes down King Snake’s gang at the docks.
Batman’s very first message from Oracle is IF YOU DON’T DO RIGHT BY THE NEW KID I’M STEALING HER TO BE THE NEXT BATGIRL.
Meanwhile, young teenager Jason Todd is stealing tires to pay for his mom’s medicine while his dad is in jail again. Two-Face, Willis’s most recent boss, won’t even bother to pay for his arrested henchmen’s bail, let alone lawyers, and the Gotham court appointed ones are a crapshoot.
Willis never wanted Jason doing crime, but Jason never wanted his dad doing it either, so tough fucking shit all around. Before getting arrested, Willis shared just enough information about his henching gigs to keep Jason away from them. Don’t go to that part of town tonight, avoid the docks next week, never buy anything from Scarecrow’s ex-goons even if they’re working for someone else now.
So when Jason sees the Batmobile just fucking sitting in Crime Alley, he steals two tires and leaves a note on the dashboard with everything he knows about Two-Face’s latest plans.
The snarling photo of that coin-flipping fucker’s arrest in the papers two days later is the most satisfying thing Jason’s seen in his life. It doesn’t get him his dad back, but it sure feels damn good.
So maybe Jason listens in harder on other Rogues’ henchmen and mafia goons chatting with each other in bars and trying to impress the working girls with how much they know, and maybe when the Batmobile shows up a few blocks away from Crime Alley, it loses another couple tires and gets an even longer note.
The third time Jason does it, a hand lands on his shoulder and a voice says “Dude—” from behind him; he swings out with his tire iron, clocking Sparrow in the face.
“Oh, shit,” Jason says, stumbling back. He just whacked Batman’s sidekick! Everyone knows Batman is super fucking protective after the second one died! Oh shit, he is so fucked.
“Dude, ow,” Sparrow says, hand to her jaw. “Nice reflexes, but ow.”
“No shit, nice reflexes,” Jason says. “This is Gotham. Do people just love being snuck up on wherever you’re from?”
“I’m from Gotham too, jerk,” Sparrow says.
“Don’t sound like it,” Jason points out. She has an accent. It’s subtle, but there. Guessing by how her eyes widen, not many people notice. “What do you want?”
“Uh, for you to not steal my boss’s tires?” Sparrow says. She rubs her jaw. “Like, we appreciate the tips, but could you leave the Batmobile in one piece?”
“You can afford to replace them,” Jason says, rolling his eyes. “I gotta eat.”
“Is that so.” Sparrow narrows the lenses of her mask. It’s freaky. She reaches for her belt; Jason jumps back, raising the tire iron higher. Sparrow huffs. “Chill. I’m giving you stool pigeon money. It’s not as much as the tires cost, but it’s better than nothing.”
Jason eyes the money when she holds it out. He doesn’t like thinking of myself as a snitch; this is revenge, it’s getting back at the fuckers who won’t help their own people out. But he does need the money, and what is he gonna do, fight Sparrow for the tires?
“Fine.” Jason snatches the cash out of Sparrow’s hand, eyeing the numbers in the corners quickly before hiding it in his hoodie. “I gotta worry about the big bad Bat coming after me for fucking up your face?”
“Oh, god, no, it’s embarrassing enough a civilian got a hit on me, I’m not telling him it was a teenager.”
She’s definitely a teenager too, but Jason decides discretion is the better part of valor and keeps his mouth shut.
Within a week, the Todds qualify for a health insurance plan Jason’s never heard of before. A pilot program by the Martha Wayne Foundation.
Next time, instead of jacking tires, Jason asks Sparrow to teach him how to use those nifty grappling hooks in exchange for information on a Mr. Freeze scheme.
~
Leaving off here because there are a LOT of moving parts to figure out for the ensuing canon plotlines, and how they'd change. Also, if any other teams ages and roles outside Gotham have been shuffled around too, or if they're all as per canon.

an updated breakdown of the social groups (aka affiliations) in my jegulily/dorlene/wolfstar deadly class au wip!
*and i know a lot of these groups from the most popular/stereotypical cities in the countries they are from, but i only chose those cities based on where organized crime is most concentrated. i looked at organized crime from the 1970s-1990s from all over the world as references for these fictional groups.*
*and x2, all these groups will be written as complex. this is not supposed to be something that tries to say people from these countries are all criminals or evil or anything— far from that. this fic, like the source material it was inspired by (deadly class), will have a lot of nuance and social commentaries.*
*although there is one group that is evil and i hate them but which group that is will be very obvious lol*
THE PREPS
The Preps are a very broad group to be affiliated with, as it encompasses many countries— although most prominently the united states.
instead of being a set criminal syndicate, The Preps are legacy students (meaning their parents went to the school) of government officials, military leaders, and intelligence agencies.
all of them come from wealth, and many of them stick together tightly despite not being an actual organization. they have no leaders set at the school of godric’s atelier of the deadly arts.
members: james potter, peter pettigrew, dirk cresswell, kingsley shacklebolt, dolores umbridge, rita skeeter, and gilderoy lockhart
DEAMHAIN AN TUAISCIRT (AKA NORTHERN DEMONS)
irish organized crime unit based in dublin, ireland. it’s run by the mckinnon family, and recently (when the fic takes place) because the most prominent crime organization in ireland after their rival gang fell apart.
they are a primarily leftist and anti-imperialist group, and at the school they are the smallest affiliation, but they make up for it in strength. their leader at godric’s is marlene.
members: marlene mckinnon, fabian prewett, gideon prewett, tarquin mctavish, and sturgis podmore.
SYNDICAT DU SERPENT (AKA SERPENT SYNDICATE)
the largest organized crime unit in france, with reach in countries like england, italy, and the united states. they are run by the black family.
members are known to be elusive and deadly, preferring to keep to themselves whenever possible. most of the time they don’t take well to strangers. their leader at godric’s is regulus.
members: regulus black, evan rosier, mulciber, avery, wilkes, amycus carrow, and alecto carrow.
LAS BRUJAS
a women-only movement, and organized crime unit, based in juárez, mexico. they are run by selene meadowes, and their aim is to not only protect the women and girls of their communities, but teach them to protect themselves too.
they operate mainly through vigilante justice, but are known to take out some hits here and there and influence politics. their leader at godric’s is dorcas.
members: dorcas meadowes, pandora (i’m still deciding on a last name for her! suggestions are welcome!), emma vanity, sybil trelawney.)
TOKORO NORIKUMI (AKA TOKORO CREW)
the largest crime syndicate in japan, based in tokyo. they primarily serve the tokoro family and their wishes. they control many businesses and subsidiary crime groups , and also do activities such as drug trafficking, real estate, assassinations, and extortion.
they are the most prominent affiliation at godric’s, both through size and skill. their leader at godric’s is emmeline vance (also called eme tokoro, in this fic. she’s go many names ok.) the other affiliations know better than to mess with them.
members: emmeline vance, kazuhiro shiratori, keiko takahashi, and minaka hirakata.
ZABINI MAFIA
italian mafia that is based in rome, but has reach in nearly all the major cities of italy. they have a death grip on politics and the police force. they are run by the zabini family.
the zabini mafia are more outgoing than most of the other affiliations, but they’re ultimately loyal to themselves. it’s good to be on their good side, and very bad to be on their bad side.
members: ornella zabini, barty crouch jr, florence, ludo bagman, amelia bones, and edgar bones.
KOLDOVSTVORETZ MAFIYA (AKA THE KOLDS)
essentially the russian mafia. they are one of the minor groups in the fic in terms of relevance. no main characters are apart of this affiliation.
members: igor karkaroff, antonin dolohov, gruffyd wellnelly, and baglan wellnelly.
FLAG MOB (AKA THE NATIONAL HAND & DIXIE RULE)
this is a unique affiliation, as it combines two separate organizations from different countries: the dixie rule of the american south, and the national hand of england.
they are the most undoubtedly cut and dry bad guys in this story, as they are inspired by racist groups like the national front and the dixie mob.
i hate them as the writer. you are meant to hate them too as a reader. they do serve a purpose and are not just here to be Edgy or something weird like that.
dixie rule members: jugson and gibbon.
national hand members: walden macnair, thorfinn rowle, and corban yaxley.
THE SQUIBS
the squibs are students with no affiliations at all. they are the outcasts of the school, essentially. a lot of them don’t come from organized crime backgrounds at all and have no formal training, but a few of them are those that were disowned from their affiliations! no leaders for obvious reasons.
members: lily evans, remus lupin, mary macdonald, xenophilius lovegood, and severus snape.

✧. INFO
.  name : roronoa zoro .  age : 19-20's ( verse dependent ) .  birthday : 11/11 .  gender : male .  orientation : homosexual .  affiliations : straw hat pirates .  skills : swordsmanship, physical combat, stealth, finding optimal locations for naps .  conditions : insomnia, anxiety
✧. AUs ( verses taking place outside of OP )
.  modern : retired hit man runs a quaint floral shop on the corner of the street. quiet, keeps to himself, but known for helping neighbors when they need it. .  marvel / dc : he doesn't plan to be a vigilante. but after killing one or two or several criminals, along with beating up however many more inbetween-- zoro gains an unexpected reputation. since murder isn't widely accepted amongst most crimefighters and superheroes, zoro works alone. his top priority is keeping people safe, even if that means breaking the law. .  mafia / john wick : zoro leads a quiet life as a driver. people appreciate a taxi driver who doesn't say much, since there's no need for small talk. somedays, zoro drives people to the airport. other days, zoro transports various goods ( he doesn't ask what the package is. he just delivers it. ) inbetween those drives, zoro executes open hits as one of the most lethal assassins. .  criminal investigation : his record of capturing criminals and solving cases rivals the number of times he's been written up by supervisors, broken protocol, and had teammates leave. zoro's brilliant at his work, but abysmal to work with. the detective doesn't care if his own precinct loathes him. for victims and their loved ones, zoro's determined as hell to solve every case that comes his way. .  paranormal / horror : trains since childhood to be a hunter of supernatural creatures and paranormal entities. zoro's moral compass conflicts when he's on the verge of death after a battle, but a vampire 'saves' him by turning him.

ah hi! this is trackingthehuntress - you're reading huntress 1989? what do you think? :D always jazzed to hear someone getting into more helena <3
hi!! god there was SO MUCH in this volume. like it did shock me at first that helena’s origin story in this is much darker compared to what she has in cry for blood (which is what i had been using as my main understanding of helena), and i think it further fuels this push and pull of who the mask REALLY IS and what it’s hiding, and whom from which is so fascinating. (especially bc the last character i did a deep dive on was donna troy - who has these identity crises WITHOUT a mask metaphorically or literally existing wrt her persona) she sees huntress as a version of her with more courage not only to deal with her personal traumas but to also to reach out a hand to others instead of retracting it in fear of further pain. digging figurative claws into herself to find the courage to remain tender, which makes me 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫.
also, i love that she finds a therapist LOL. characters that are deeply introspective about their own behaviors that drive them to vigilantism even after their initial goals of donning the mask are kinda met!! >>>> and it also makes it make sense when she decides to temp. step away from this life with james at the end of the volume.
plus it’s interesting to see her idea of vigilantism and what it means to enact justice, considering her mafia background. she goes about her vigilante behavior with less consideration of the law itself, but rather what it means to be an upstander - > protector of her community. although she’s divorced from the mafia, as she’s much older in this run i’ld assume she’s seen the ins (and bts) of organized crime from afar. and so i think she understands how systematic crime+violence can be between different organizations from a unique pov. and i do think the volume makes use of that - we see how journalism/news orgs., police dept., criminal ops., (it did remind me of the wire at one point) can all be intertwined. (which makes her later taking up a teacher gig for her civilian identity make more sense) however, there are aspects, plot points, etc. that didn’t sit right with me and imo it’s important to note how her economic class potentially impacts her sense of justice which all becomes a larger convo.
much to marinate on! def going to go back and reread the entire volume much slower cause i did speed through and make my thoughts more cohesive rather than word vomiting them, so expect more helena posting!

Tricky (vigilante name), also known as Blue (common nickname) is a highschool senior who's been a vigilante since Freshman year or so. He hangs around Nightshade as one time he broke his leg after falling off of a building and likely would have died from his injuries if Nightshade hadn't found him and helped him. He was being chased by some sort of gang mafia organization that I haven't had a lot of development for.
He has like. Functional stuff despite being a high schooler. Knee pads, elbow pads, gas mask, nice shoes for the tasks he does, and some metal bars that he fights with. He likely stole most of this and hides it, as his home life isn't that good. His parents are verbally abusive and hinted to be physically abusive occasionally as well.
He would run away but he'd rather not have the police on his tail for something else. However the second he graduates, he is out of that house and going to Nightshade's. Or Izzy's, she's a bit more reliable in the 'not into any crime stuff' section. (He sneaks out a lot though, during the night to go visit Nightshade or see Isabella.) He's joking mostly but also has a ton of anxiety that needs to be worked through.
He has Orange hair (just now thinking of the possibility of it being dyed) and blue eyes. However I may change that to brown eyes, why not. He's a great fighter and has improved a lot. I'm not sure if I have much more on Tricky but. Here.
THE oh man Tricky sounds like he'd be my favorite if this were like a show-

. . .
headlights on the hillside
. . .
When she first established her cover as the court-ordered therapist, Elena studied the boys’ files carefully, looking at what she was getting herself into. Their mugshots that were stapled to each respective manila folder somehow captured the weird mix of grief and hubris each brother felt at that moment of their arrest. They had just lost their father and their freedom and were close to losing their friend Romeo, yet they still exuded a strong sense of self-righteousness. Somehow, they still seemed to believe in what they felt they were called to do.
All she had to do was play the part, see how they were doing, and report back to Smecker. Instead, Elena wanted to dig her way into their brains, see if she could find God hiding in the two Irish lads who killed evil men. “Be careful what ye ask for,” her mother had always told her…and it sure as fuck applied in that moment the boys started to open up. Elena just didn’t know it yet.
She quickly shifts her eyes between Connor and Murphy, a sinking feeling coming over her as they work out what to do now that Obsidian has framed the Saints for the death of a New York City Police Officer…the death of Johnny Beck.
Obsidian had waited to leak the fabricated story, proving that they could go in and clean up what happened at Saint Christopher’s without raising suspicion. Seemed Beck was right to assume their power went deeper than a typical mob boss.
Elena had seen other splinter groups within government agencies, but they consistently failed to gain much traction before eventually getting caught. And none of them were colluding with organized crime factions like Obsidian. No, she had never seen a group so capable of creating a narrative that slipped through the cracks. A narrative fueled by more and more curious characters, like that guy running for Congress. A narrative no one paid any attention to until the Saints got involved.
Connor leans his fists against the table, newspapers, notes, and evidence spread out in front of him. Each headline marks a trail of Obsidian’s suspected influence.
SAINTS WANTED FOR MURDER OF NYPD DETECTIVE
SEX TRAFFICKING ON THE RISE, POLICE UNABLE TO DETAIN SUSPECTS
NEW BRAND OF HEROIN KILLING ADDICTS IN NYC
HAWKINS, CONGRESS LOOKING TO PASS “ANTI-VIGILANTE” BILL TO DETER SAINTS COPYCATS
CATHOLICS AFRAID TO ATTEND MASS FOLLOWING CHURCH VIOLENCE SPREE
“It’s never going to stop unless we do something,” Connor states firmly, with everyone nodding their heads in agreement.
That stubborn sense of justice suddenly tastes different. Elena’s chest grows tighter, and she reaches out to touch the boys lightly on their arms, forcing the words out of her mouth. “I need to talk to you. Both of you.”
The twins look at Elena with concern, then back to each other as they nod slightly with raised eyebrows, speaking their silent language again.
She leads them into the hallway, looking over their shoulders to ensure no one else is within earshot. The lump in her throat threatens her ability to whisper, but she has to say something. “If you do this, if you go after Obsidian, you’ll have targets on your backs for the rest of your lives.”
“We already do,” Connor starts, his eyes strangely accepting of what they have become.
“Aye, not to mention our little prison escape,” Murphy adds.
Elena shakes her head. “No, this is bigger than that. This is bigger than the mafia framing you for murder. This is bigger than all of us.”
The dark-haired twin looks so sure of himself and his brother. “We can take care of it.”
“Murphy, we’re talking about criminals who work deep within the government. Terrorists, and not the kind that say ‘death to America.’ These are Americans, who think they are the true patriots.”
That stubborn sense of nobility builds in Connor’s face. “All the more reason to take them down, yeah?”
Anyone else would commend them for their determination. But this is different…the boys are different. “If you get caught, you’re not going back to prison.” Her voice catches in her throat with the still-fresh memory of Connor bleeding, unresponsive. “You will be killed.”
Elena stares at them, her words visibly weighing on their shoulders as they lower their heads. Connor keeps his eyes down, and Murphy sniffs once as he looks away. The twins can’t even look at each other yet.
Murphy walks away without a word, not even acknowledging his brother. He disappears upstairs, pulling the cigarette from behind his ear with his right hand. Aequitas.
She folds her arms over her chest, finally sucking in a deep albeit shaky breath, and looks back to Connor. He lifts his head, still not looking at Elena, and rubs his left hand over his face. Veritas. Deep dread dulls his blue eyes, and it breaks her heart. But she had to say something. And then there’s the thing she still can’t bring herself to say out loud.
His eyes meet hers, ripping into her soul. She whispers his name, almost tasting him on her lips as he stares at her. Nothing else forms in her throat, but she feels a tear escape from the corner of her eye.
Connor exhales slowly, reaching up to hold Elena’s face. He rubs his thumb over her cheek and holds her gaze. She thinks she’s gotten pretty good at reading him…that she can talk to him without talking.
He pulls her into his arms, tight, and she presses the side of her face into his chest. She grips his back as he hugs her, feeling his heartbeat against her ear.
“Please don’t do this, Connor.”
He squeezes his arms around her, refusing to let go. At least, that’s what Elena wants to believe. She swallows hard, pushing the suggestion out with a deep breath. “You could run away.”
Connor slowly lets go of her, steps back, and looks at her with disbelief. “What?” he whispers, hoping he misunderstood her.
Elena bites her lip, lowering her voice more. “You could run.” She swallows again. We could run, she wants to say. Instead, she straightens her back, the pose contradicting the sadness on her face. “You and Murphy. You could disappear, and no one will find you.”
Connor’s face falls more incredulous, his eyes narrow yet glistening with heartbreak. “We tried that. Didn’t work, now did it?”
Her shoulders slump, and an unforgiving chill rushes under her skin. He’s only a step away, but it feels like an entire ocean has flooded between them. She opens her mouth, but words fail her.
He runs his hand through his hair, his own mouth falling open as he sorts the words in his head. He finally looks at her again, his twilight blue eyes sparkling like glass. “Of all people, I thought ye would understand why we have to do this.” And then a single tear breaks over his lashline, falling fast and disappearing as quickly as it appeared.
Elena takes a deep breath. “Connor, I do understand. Believe me. I felt the same way when Smecker brought that evidence from Boston...”
Fuck. She trails off, stopping herself from saying more. The other thing she wasn’t ready to tell him yet.
He holds up his hand with his eyes narrowing more. “What…what evidence?”
She can feel her heartbeat pound in every inch of her body, thumping in her head as Connor stares at her. She tries to inhale, but her chest feels heavy.
“What evidence, Elena?” he repeats, his voice sharper.
She feels so incredibly small. This is not how this is supposed to go. But she has to tell him now. Veritas. “From Copley Plaza. That’s how we found Nikolai.”
Connor’s eyes widen as his face falls with shock. He doesn’t say anything, and his eyes narrow again.
Once upon a time, Elena broke him, but not like this. This is different.
She tries to say his name, but he stops her midway, his veritas finger up like a warning. “Don’t.” He combs his hand through his hair again, letting his eyes unfocus as he visibly ruminates on Elena’s confession. He blinks and looks at Elena with a mixture of betrayal and anguish. “It’s my fault that ye killed Nikolai, isn’t it?”
“No, that’s not—”
“What? Ye saying ye were going to kill him before that?”
But even the truth is hard to believe sometimes. She presses her lips together to keep her nerves in check. “I would have, had I had the chance, yes.”
He looks away again, and Elena knows he’s replaying that day in his head: March 19, 1999. “It was my fucking idea to go there. When I got that info for the hotel meet, it was my fucking idea to go kill them. Murphy agreed, yeah, but I’m the one who fucking thought, we could destroy all of these motherfuckers.”
“Connor…”
He shakes his head, still not looking at her. “It’s all my fault. All of this.”
The thought weighs heavy on his shoulders, finally proving that he’s been carrying more than he ever wanted to admit…just what Elena wanted way back in that prison interrogation room. But he can’t blame himself for any of this…he shouldn’t.
Elena says his name again and slowly takes a step toward him, wanting more than anything to wrap her arms around him again, but she keeps them folded against her chest. And Connor steps back, out of reach, his eyes shifting more toward anger. Whether it’s directed at her or himself or everything, doesn’t really matter…her heart still breaks more.
“I can’t.” His voice sounds so unstable, and he starts for the stairs. “I can’t do this.”
Against her better judgment, Elena chases after him.
Outside, Connor blows right past his brother at the bottom of the church steps, refusing to stop as he heads for the field beyond the gravel. Murphy spins his head back to Elena, his eyebrows creased together as he asks, “What the fuck?” All Elena can do is shake her head…she can explain, but she can’t at the same time. Murphy jogs after Connor, only to be told to “fuck off” as he disappears into the woods.
“What the fuck was that all about?” Murphy yells at Elena, causing her to flinch as her feet hit the ground at the bottom of the stairs. He presses his lips together taut, apologizing, “Sorry, lass.” He gestures in the direction Connor ran off, a justified look of concern washing over his face and strangely silently asking her to join him. Elena waves her hand politely and shakes her head again, sucking in a breath as she watches Murphy follow his brother’s path.
She turns around and finds those four familiar faces watching her sympathetically. Smecker moves slowly from the door, about to descend down the concrete steps, but Elena walks back up toward him. She tries to look into his eyes but drops her gaze almost instantly, afraid she’ll break down here in front of everyone.
Smecker doesn’t say anything, but he does place his hand on her shoulder, rubbing his thumb ever so slightly. Elena looks up, unable to keep her tears from welling up, but she’d be damned if she’d let them fall down her face. She half-laughs and shakes her head, looking Smecker dead in the eye with heartbreak. “Didn’t I tell you I shouldn’t be here?”

I saw some fanarts of MC being Spider Gwen and I loved them 💖💖...so, here is a little something I wrote for that Au 😁
Pairing: Poppy x MC (Sam/Samantha)
It hadn't even been thirty minutes, but her last confrontation with one mafia organization was already all over the news and social media.
It wasn't that surprising to be honest, it had been one of her not-so-stealthy missions.
Sam groaned and plopped down on the couch (Zoey would give her shit later when she sees the black ashes all over the couch), watching on the TV as one reporter was talking about the burnt building behind them.
So, yeah, the building blew up, and it was kinda her fault but also not really? I mean, can someone blame her when the goons of the mafia boss practically trapped her there with all the intention of blowing her up?
"Stupid goons, with their stupid faces" Sam grumbled under her breath.
She was still wearing her suit, except for the mask -it had been thrown aside on her room. And she was covered in ashes and dust, from head to toe.
There were no casualties (why do all crime bosses always made their shady activities on a warehouse?), and thank to the stupid goons, she couldn't catch the crime boss either.
Sam got up from the couch and went to pour herself a glass of water. Shaking off some of the dirt and ashes from her hair in the way to the kitchen.
The voice of the reporter was still in the background, narrating the events happened not an hour ago.
"...there are no signs of our vigilante hero, and some are speculating she may not have gotten out in time..."
What?
Sam turned around, glass of water in one hand and a confused frown settling on her features.
'Did no one see me getting out?'
Yes, her scape was quick and she knew that the mafia boss and his goons were already gone so she came home immediately.
People must have seen her leave, right? They couldn't assume she was dead, right??
For the first time since arriving to her dorm, Sam took out her phone from her special pocket, and to her horror, she had more than thirty missed calls and like a hundred text messages. Almost eighty percent of those belonging to her beautiful diabolic girlfriend, who was going to kill her for worrying her.
Her eyes caught the last text she received, it was from Zoey.
'The devil just stormed out of class, and I'm not saving you from her. Serves you right for not answering your goddamn phone.'
"Fuck." She mumbled in fear.
Poppy was on her way.
Poppy was on her way to kill her!
Before she could form a plan of escape, the door swung open. Both Sam and Poppy froze in place.
Relieve washing over the shorter girl's features, but it was instantly replaced with anger.
"Poppy..."
Sam feared for her life at seeing the death glare her girlfriend was giving her. And maybe she could escape with her powers, but she knew Poppy would find her wherever she went, and escaping would only make Poppy angrier.
So, Sam just accepted her fate, she closed her eyes and raised her hands in surrender.
If she had to die at least she'd die in the hands of her lovely -devilish- girlfriend.
She heard the door closing with a bang and Poppy's heels storming towards her.
Sam opened her eyes in surprise when instead of some sort of punishment her mind had been coming up with, Poppy was hugging her tightly.
"Poptart?"
Sam's body was frozen, not knowing how to react, not wanting to set Poppy off with some comment.
"What did I tell you about endangering yourself?" Poppy grumbled with her face hidden in Sam's neck.
"Not to do it, or else you'd kill me yourself..."
Poppy hummed and tightened her grip.
"...this isn't a very effective attack..." the words left her mouth without thinking, and Sam instantly wanted to use one of her own spiderwebs on her mouth. Maybe that way it would keep shut and not ruin the moment.
A soft giggle took her out of her thoughts.
"Shut up..." Poppy mumbled, still with her face hidden.
Sam let out a breath she didn't know she was holding. Poppy wasn't going to kill her, she was just worried.
Her body relaxed and her arms were quick to hug Poppy back.
"You didn't answer your phone." Poppy said after a while, none of them loosing their hold on the other.
"I'm sorry. I forgot I had my phone on silence."
"Idiot." The statement was followed with a pinch on her side, and although it hurt, Sam allowed it.
"I'm sorry."
Poppy sighed and pulled away, just far enough to see Sam's eyes.
"You're covered in ashes and debris." She said while rubbing a black spot on Sam's cheek. "You need a shower."
Sam chuckled and pecked Poppy's cheek.
"Don't you mean "we"?"
Poppy frowned and looked down at herself. An affronted gasp left her lips.
Due to their hug, all ashes and dirt were on her as well. Maybe even on her face, give how she had hid herself on Sam's dirty neck.
Sam chuckled at her, and Poppy was not amused.
"Relax, hon. You still look hot as fuck."
Poppy rolled her eyes and Sam kissed her cheek once again.
"Besides..." Sam moved her lips to Poppy's left ear. "We can always share the shower."
Poppy rolled her eyes again, but this time with a playful glint on her eyes.
"When will you stop trying to get on my pants?"
"Never."
Poppy chuckled and pulled Sam down to connect their lips in a desired kiss.
"Good." She said at the lovestruck expression on the hero's face. "Lead the way then, I rather we be covered in bubbles instead of dirt and ashes."
Eagerly, Sam took Poppy's hand and led her to the bathroom.
That's it. I hope you enjoyed it 😁
I have more ideas for them, I just need to find some time to write them 😁

“I haven't lost my sense of humour!”
FULL NAME: Roscoe Sykes BASED ON: Roscoe (Oliver and Company) FACE CLAIM: Jack Falahee PRONOUNS: He/him BIRTHDAY: November 17, 1988 CURRENT STATUS: Closed
Character Information || cw: violence and abuse ||
Roscoe Sykes grew up just like any other normal kid living in the city - or at least, the ‘normal’ ones who happened to be surrounded entirely by heavy influences in the mafia. His father was a leading man in one of - if not the most dangerous crime organizations to ever run rampant through New York City, and his mother - well, god knows what happened to her. There were the rumors of course, but they seemed to change monthly depending on his father’s mood. Sometimes, it was as simple as the man killing her for disobeying her, other times, he heard she was arrested and sentenced to life; on the worst days, there were gruesome explanations that left Roscoe’s thin hope that she had simply fled back to Italy shredded. A steady flow of women replaced her image instead, streaming in and out of the household as much as random scrappy, meddling, and downright skeevy older men did as well. Their home was often the center of many business meetings, and being the curious child he was, Roscoe didn’t hesitate to hide and eavesdrop in the hall, absorbing as much of the information from the smoke filled room as he could.
It was never really a choice to join - his loyalty was tied to the Mafia without consent  the second he was old enough to learn how to hold a gun and fight. After all, even if him and his brother had tried to refuse, neverending obedience to their father was as easy as a single snap of the man’s grubby fingers. So at only fourteen, Roscoe and DeSoto were forced to dirty their hands into a war they hadn’t started - but of course, Roscoe wasn’t exactly complaining. He’d learned from the minute he started comprehending, that his father’s power was something he admired greatly; that being fearless - being ruthless was the method to success. Hell if Roscoe didn’t strive to achieve that very thing every day he could…
Naturally, not wanting to risk upsetting his father, and also inspired with the newfound passion of emulating the very person he both admired as much as he despised, the vigilante and his partner in crime often hit the streets, at first taking the role of ‘leg-breakers’ when it came to finding, intimidating, and often punishing those who owed their father money. In due time, as the twins matured, and better established themselves, dirty work soon became grunt work, then dealing, and eventually, dirty work became no work at all, simply standing guard during dealings. It was only then, when idly flashing intimidation tactics, that he’d first seen her, immediately drawn to her breathtaking figure, and undeniable stature - the way she walked said enough. Even though he would come to learn she had surrounded herself with lowlifes, and peasants, Roscoe was convinced he could make her into something great - into something his.
It didn’t seem to take much to wrap Rita around his finger - or at least, to his knowledge. A flash of money here, and promise or two there, manipulating with power to gain what he wanted, and soon? The man had pressed the woman into a marriage of all things, and it finally seemed that life was coming together… Now if only he could get that damn clingy child to disappear, Roscoe’s dream would have practically be complete.
Unfortunately, for reasons he’d forever blame on DeSoto and the idiot’s more aggressive approach to his temper, what should have been a quick and painless deal went south - and the pair were caught in a firestorm that was about to wipe their entire career out. Even more unfortunately, for reasons he could only blame on himself, Roscoe didn’t manage to outrun the NYPD, instead managing to find himself cornered. Having quite literally run out of options, the man ended up surrendering himself to police at the fear of being shot otherwise. Roscoe never really asked what happened to DeSoto, and even to this day, he never found out if his brother suffered the same fate as himself, or if he’d managed to escape arrest - as well as the cost of deceiving their family.
Finding the idea of a lifetime jail sentence, or death by what he could only assume would be a firing squad quite.. undesirable, Roscoe took the only other way out - a plea bargain that had him ratting out his own father in an last ditch effort to save his own skin. Selfish, and cowardly, maybe - but Roscoe had never been the bravest person around, and he certainly wasn’t about to stick around to figure out if his actions were bound to get him killed. Not even a day after he was released by the police due to his ‘helpful cooperation in apprehending New York’s most wanted criminal’ and Roscoe was kicking Oliver out the door in front of Rita and himself, pulling them along to the airport so they could begin a new life somewhere safe.. The man can only hope he’s far enough away that the Mafia won’t find him - and in the meantime; he’ll just have to chill out until he’s certain enough he can start rebuilding his family’s name from scratch.

Now I'm thinking about which comics titles I've read and what I'd recommend to people jumping into DC comics. These are all in the Post-Crisis Pre-Flashpoint era, so not only are they finished running, the universe they're in is closed too.
Robin minis I, II, III: 15 issues total, from 1991 - 1993.
Establishing character stories for Tim Drake as Robin, with some interesting geo-political time capsule elements because they're all from the very early 1990's. This is when Tim is a relatively new vigilante, and each story has a reason for Batman to be mostly out of the picture so we see what Tim is like by himself, rather than as Batman's Partner. Spoiler: Tim by himself will always find people to team up with, and not just other capes! Very much plays into the struggles of having a double life.
Also serves as a good introduction to the city of Gotham & the crime stories the Bats handle, covering the mafia, international organizations, and various levels of Rogues.
Young Justice 1998: 55 issues, 1998 - 2003.
Fun ensemble cast, whacky adventure stories, with a solid emotional core running through it. In an era when more adult oriented comics were trying for realism by going Grim & Gritty, Young Justice said "How about we tackle realistic Teen Issues by putting them in the zany shenanigans that the golden/silver age would've had?"
This can create some mood whiplash, but also really works. Probably because that's often what being a teenager is like.
Batgirl 2000: 73 issues, 2000- 2006.
Speaking of what being a teenager is like, Cassandra Cain's Batgirl run my beloved. Lots of snark. Both Cass and her primary mentor are disabled women, and though Cass's disability is based on Comics Logic, it's internally consistent for the story, and her illiteracy has real effects on the plot and her life. Coming of age story, gifted kid burnout, the lengths you'll go to to get being the best back, wrestling with guilt, heroism, & self-worth.
Cass has a language disability and is one of the deadliest physical fighters in the world. Her mentor Barbara Gordon is paraplegic, a librarian, and information specialist. They have some shared experiences and values, and some wildly different experiences and values, and they clash! They care about each other deeply! They tease each other! Barbara fucks up sometimes, and also sincerely apologizes when she does.
Huntress: Cry For Blood: 6 issues, published in 2000.
Solid short noir mystery & rehash of Helena's origin story. Has a very poetic vibe. I was able to follow it after only seeing Helena in crossovers rather than reading her solo series.
~
I got the number of issues from the fanwikis, and should note that Young Justice & Batgirl issue count does not include crossover events, where issues in other titles may be needed for the full story. I found Batgirl mostly understandable without reading the crossovers, but with Young Justice I needed to either track the issues down or search fanwikis for context.
What are some titles or story arcs you all recommend?
