a very mitskook 2023 wrap-up

hi everyone

so i didn't write very much in 2023, that much is apparent. now i'm not gonna sit here act like that's a massive loss considering the vast amount of extremely talented writers that produced wonderful work this year, but i am still disappointed in myself from, i guess, a labour of love perspective. i look at the work i have contributed to the fandom over the years and i still have more i want to add, more stories i want to tell (trust me the wip folder makes me weep too).

but every time i wanted to write, the idea of making a love story made me so miserable i had to scrub it from my head. and worse, when i pushed past that obvious discomfort, the love in those stories soured into resentment, rage, and a cruelty i couldn't justify (to this audience at least). particularly with tsdverse, this next installment is about m'boys really grappling with conflicts that have no easy answers (if they have answers at all) and man am i so fucking glad i wrote that flashforward with heejin to keep a north star on where they would end up because if i hadn't, i would've completely shattered them in a misdirected fireball of righteous grief. im glad i had that to hold on to bc i haven't had much else.

my 2023 has been. uh. trying amongst the good stuff (and i promise there was some good stuff) but not this. my mum had a heart attack, i was fired for not coming back to work straight after her surgery, and i was couch surfing and unemployed for long enough i felt like i'd wrecked my life forever. and, of course, i was mourning my relationship that ended at the end of last year, and to be honest i'm still not done with that. that's the absolute joy and misery of tying your heart to someone you're hoping will be around forever: your eyes don't see anything the same anymore, certain songs that come on shuffle make you break down on the tube, you realise huge swathes of your social media presence, including ao3, were built for one person and it wasn't you, and now? all those things are monuments to the emptiness you feel every time you remember they're not in your life anymore.

to be extremely clear, i'm not blaming my ex for these feelings, and if anyone harasses them on my behalf i will personally hunt you down and gut you with a knitting needle, but in missing them as much as i do i realised how inextricable they were from my writing process. i mostly wrote fic to make them happy, to hear their praise and notes and excitement to read the rest, and that was unfair on everyone; me, them, and you (if you look forward to my work, i don't wanna presume lmao). that's too much pressure to put on someone who just wasn't interested in bangtan rpf anymore, and that's normal, it's okay to move on from that, but it meant even before the breakup i didn't know who i was doing it for anymore. that level of directionlessness (<- not a word but whatever) gummed up those creative gears until they had no choice but to stop.

anyway to maybe cap this pity party a bit, i want to start sharing my writing more on here, and i won't wait for people to clamour to let me know that that's wanted bc again, i need to start rebuilding my confidence in my writing and feeling out where i fit into this community after basically silently moping around for a full year. i want to sincerely thank everyone who's ever read my work. i won't promise to do anything but my best, and in the meantime i'll give all the snippets to you.

What are your writing strengths? I think im good with characters and plot, or at least that's what I enjoy doing most and what comes most naturally to me. I waste so much water standing in the shower thinking through things... I'd say im quite a proficient editor too, but idk if that counts

What are your writing weaknesses? I'm gonna say dialogue cause sometimes when I read back over conversations, they don't feel right and I spend ages tweaking it. And can I say procrastination? I struggle so much in starting writing, but once I get into it i’m fine.

Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language? I don't trust google translate enough to write in another language unless I knew myself it was right, so in most cases i’d find a way around it. I don't mind dialogue in other languages if its for a reason, but if that means I have to translate every other sentence it can get a bit annoying

omg i just read the 5th chapter of your fic and i wanted to say that i LOVE it!!!

So i saw your post abt it yesterday and started reading at like midnight and i can not get enough!! Good thing it's a tuesday so i didn't have to wait long for an update hh

I love the way you write katie and how she feels to me like a real person, i know you said that at first many people would think that she's an annoying bossy teenage girl, but also, i've been there!! i was also the teenage girl who hated the troublemakers and was scared of breaking the rules (except i couldn't yell at them)

This is just my personal opinion but her bonding moments with the apollo cabin were for sure my favourite scenes, i just love them in general and i get do excited seeing katie interact with one of them!! i'm trying not to spoil here for future readers but the beach scene was so immaculate and definitely in my top 3!! on the other hand, the infirmary scene,...

I know this story is like a tratie endgame, but at several moments i was sooo convinced that katie's gonna have a thing or a moment with someone (which proved *mostly* wrong hh) so i'm still waiting to see how this plays out

Back to me saying how real these relationships are, i love how you convey all these complexities and emotions between campers, while also not forgetting that they're still SOOO young and most of them immature and WILL get into petty fights, but even then, there's still this sense of unity between them, or a camaraderie built by their shared experience (and trauma lol)

i'm looking forward to seeing how the demeter arc is gonna play out, but also what happened after the bday party (again trying not to spoil) and how idk i'm feeling there is some tension and doubt abt some campers' loyalties and their behaviour (katie would kill me for that). I feel like you've been building up for them in the last chapter so i can't wait for everything to blow up in our faces!!

Anyways this is getting pretty, and i still have soooo many stuff i have not mentioned (the last chapter actually brought me to tears, both happy and sad, and i could not be more glad about it) so sorry for clogging up your inbox, but i'm like very insane abt your fic so i had to scream at you about it!!

i also adore the apollo cabin and i promise there is more to come with the apollo kids! one apollo kid in particlar (not named for the Mystery, although it might be pretty obvious who) is about to become a lot more prominent in katie's life and he is genuinely one of my favourite characters in the whole fic so i am so excited to see what you think of him!! im so glad you liked the beach scene! it's also one of my favourite scenes and its so lovely to hear that it resonates!! the infirmary scene...unfortunatrly there might be more where that is coming from :'( the apollo cabin in the pjo series are so deeply tragic and so personal to me

for now my lips are locked on any other potential romances.... i will just say that although it is tratie endgame there will be lots of twists and turns in getting there....

I finished Deliver Me from Nowhere immediately after you posted the final chapter. I flew through it, furiously, needing to read the ending before I could take everything in. But even as I did I captured so many lines and passages in my head. The final chapter was absolutely stunning. I don’t mean this as any offense to writers on tumblr or fan fics but when I read your work it feels so much bigger, so much more real, profound, beautiful than this platform gets credit for. Or you, really. Your work reads like short stories I read in The New Yorker. It deserves so much more than this.

Hi, so, yeah, ive been holding onto this message for two weeks now :')

i fucking love the passages you picked out because they were ones that felt important to me too - really essential viscera of this story

im gonna be so honest for a moment, just between you and me (and the rest of tumbles lol) but i've been seriously questioning my place here on tumbles - full disclosure, i started out here back in january (woof, almost a year ago) in the mindset that what i was writing didn't count as writing for me bc i was writing for the sole purpose of turning out work i thought people would like on here - and they did, and i did that for a long time, got a lot of notes on pretty vapid work etc etc, and even though i wasn't thinking about it as writing, it was a sort of stretching and contracting of musculature that eventually changed and evolved into me writing what i wanted to write.

i think june was the first departure from the canned fics i had been producing to something a little more my style, and a little less desirable to the masses of tumblr lol

the notes got fewer and fewer, but the readership ive had for works like june and deliver me (and even my cannibals, hi, freaks love ya lmao) is so close and lovely and that's been far more rewarding - getting messages from folks that this work has somehow touched them or made them feel seen or just loosened some essential emotion in them enough that they can process it and let it move through them - i love that, and writing these fics has done much the same for me - and (not but, and) and im also having growing pains

i keep coming back to fic bc it's safe and comfortable and i use it as a crutch - stakes are lower when you aren't thinking about querying or publishing or "good enough" - but, again, being honest, the fic thing doesn't feel good any more - it feels like what it is, me trying to fit something that doesn't fit any more, trying to cramp myself into something and expect people to like it when it's simply not what they come to tumblr for

ive been fighting myself on this for a while, slowly inching my way out of fic and into the reality that i want my work to go elsewhere and trying to believe that i have the chops to make that happen - your message is such a buoy and encouragement toward that future

let me make something very clear here, this is my experience, i am by no means shitting on fic writing in general at allllll - people are doing amazing shit on here, no doubt, this is just where i'm at personally with it - ive said it before and ill say it again - writing begets writing, and without all the fic i wrote this year, i know for a veritable fact i would've never gotten my first novel this year either - but i think it's time for a shift for me

all this is to say that i think an era is ending, but i'm so grateful i got it to begin with to have had the chance to share work with folks like you. maybe you'll see me in the new yorker one day :)

4. honestly, i’ve read wonderful fics from many talented authors in this fandom that have inspired me !! i’ve also been lucky enough to befriend some of them & receive their help w some of my fics. but i’m gonna cheat & name a few more than 3 lol oops.

@zanniscaramouche —— zanni knows how much her writing has influenced me, but her ability to keep scenes going, go from one character’s action to the next character’s action and/or dialogue so seamlessly, perfectly describe how & why an action made a character feel the way it did, etc just brings her writing to life so wonderfully. i’ve been lucky enough to have her beta quite a few of my fics that included smut as well, bless her soul, because her talent when it comes to smut, dirty talk, etc is superb. having her influence in my smut has made it what it is today, 100%.

@thedevilinmybrain —— the way jen writes emotions so viscerally & describes things in a way that even if you’ve never seen an item, action, and/or place before, you can still picture it in your head clearly is so admirable. you feel every emotion the character feels. you see exactly what the character sees. i’m obsessed w the way she portrays louis & harry’s dynamic in each fic —— it’s always similar but different. keeps you on your toes but you know it’s gonna be a good time. that’s how i aspire to write larry’s relationship in my fics lol. her writing is so captivating & phenomenal.

@loveislarryislove — long story short, annika & i have this obsession with touches & yearning doing so much for a scene, an emotion, a character, etc. touches are everything!!! i read her bodyguard fic & was obsessed before we even became friends & it showed me that you can depict so much lust, love, angst, happiness, etc in a scene that isn’t even that intense physically. bless annika’s soul for betaing my fics, too lol.

@2tiedships2 & @londonfoginacup for the same reasons —— the way they incorporate humor into their dialogue and internal monologue???? unmatched!!!! i’ve always wanted to be a writer who can incorporate humor into a fic seamlessly that is funny to people besides me and reading endless amounts of their fics & talking to them as well has definitely helped me mucho. their writing has also helped me learn that it’s okay to bend some sentence structure rules for creative reasons & i can confirm, my writing has only benefited from it.

15. i hope im answering this right when i answer this based on what universe i think is the hardest to write lol —— for me, it’s omegaverse. i was just talking about this w some people in the 1d library actually lol. i love reading abo fics but im just not sure if i could take myself seriously writing the words “slick” or “knot” or whatever. i get too self aware and in my head about it. i have so much admiration for writers who write many abo fics, i wish i could do what they do. i’ve been thinking about signing up for the abo fic fest to kind of get myself over that hurdle, but we’ll see.

okay, lemme think: i read a 20k+ review (takedown) of Lightlark, the YA book that got a 6 figure publishing deal because of the author’s tiktok about it. i love YA as a genre (it’s such a formative genre, as fiction for kids/bigger kids tends to be, so i do believe that that audience in particular deserve fun, good books to read) so i like to stickybeak in whatever drama is happening in their corner and the Lightlark thing has been pretty interesting! the linked review is not generous lmao, but outlines pretty solidly why it won’t be so if you’re bored and nosey it’s an interesting read!!!!! it does spoil the book though!!!!!!

what else what else. this isn’t fic related but i started a mubi trial because i thought they had in the mood for love but they don’t, and no streaming service in australia does either. :( i really want to watch it!!!! but that’s okay—i lined up some interesting looking films so im gonna work through them before the trial ends. i’m about to start i am not your negro, which i’m excited for because i’m currently in the middle of if beale street could talk. i also have la notte waiting; i think italian cinema is very beautiful and romantic, and im curious to see if it’s gonna make me grind my teeth like so many older films do, when it comes to how dickish the men in them are LOL. el topo (the trailer is not work friendly!!!) is also on my watchlist but if i’m completely honest i am not that great with surrealism as a genre—i tend to like my stories literal, and also it gives me war flashbacks to highschool, and having to write essays about Dali and melting clocks. 🥹 but i’ll watch it because i’ve always been curious about jodorowsky’s dune, and i think it’ll be fun to go into that documentary at least having a taste of jodo’s style!!! and then there’s also the 1972 doco three cheers for the whale—it looks like a history on whaling? 🧐 i’ll report back. i probably won’t subscribe to mubi because i need to be picky with my monthly bills lmao, so i’m determined to watch anything that looks interesting during my trial!!!

i’ve been going on a bender, lately, in like, actively seeking out stuff to consume. i went to the library a couple of weeks ago and walked out with six different books (and four manga volumes!!!) and i’m still making my way through them—i have two more books waiting on hold for me and a wishlist in my notes!!!! i’ve also pre-ordered jennette mccurdy’s i’m glad my mom died—basically i am trying my damndest to drown myself lmfao. this is not the norm for me—i don’t know what switch has flipped but eh. there’s worse things that i could be doing, i guess. 🥹

Did it have a different ending originally?

in a very out of character move for me, i went into this one without an ending. i have absolutely no plan for where i wanted it to end. and then i played bridge to the turnabout, and had a LOT of feelings about an edgeworth and a von karma standing opposing counsel out of love this time, the reconciliation and culmination of the very tragedy that brought them together, and EVERYTHING clicked perfectly into place. after that there was no other way it could've possibly ended.

How long did it take to write it?

a couple months, because i actually put this one to the side to work on a lot of other things! franmaya week was in may and i wanted to write something chunky for that. and then sicktember rolled around so i got a good backlog of sickfics going before i finished this in the middle of those lmao. i think i started in like february and posted it in july. i wasn't consistently writing that whole time.

How long did you think about writing it before actually writing it?

respect to people who can do this but i do not. if i have an idea it goes on the list with all the other ideas and they more or less get written sequentially. i do not have the self control nor do i have the hesitation to keep stories in my head. there is not enough time in my life to get them all out, i have to get them all out or i'll start growing mold.

What part of the oneshot are you most proud of?

oh the early stuff with them as little babies. i never see fic writers tackle the language barrier? people, i think for ease of access, seem to not touch much on the fact that in the english localization, miles and franziska likely did not speak the same language for a huge chunk of time. it's possible franziska knew a little bit of english because her dad knows it, but there'd be no reason for him to use it around the house often.

so, like, miles had to learn german (probably) and franziska had to learn english (definitely, she speaks it dfghdfg) and until they both got fluent enough to meet each other half way, they just. had to make due.

i love writing for this period of time, because even though franziska is a prodigy and likely learned english before she hit age 7, i'm sure she probably was still very stumbling and awkward in her words, and im sure miles' german was no better. writing that and making it realistic and fun to read was a challenge and i loved it so much!!! and now i always wanna write that era, because i always wanna write franziska being impossibly eloquent for a child and then not knowing how to conjugate a verb. lmao

If you would rewrite it, how would you rewrite it?

hahaha another boring answer but i simply do not think about things like this, i refuse to give my perfectionism a voice xD i made a thing and i like the thing i made. not gonna nitpick it or force myself to be anything other than proud.

Lmao "how dare you not make fanworks of this canon bland wholesome couple with no conflict between them and no major personal flaws, you must be ableist" or the other acussation which is that you hate bald men (??? Lucius/Pete is just boring for the popular fic tropes. Like I have yet to see one person say they dislike them in canon! But there's what's good and enjoyable to see on screen as a background pairing, and there's what's going to get its claws deep enough into the brains of people who do transformative fandom to compell them to write fic about it. These two do not provide the correct brainworms.

Izzy is sort of catnip for fanfic writers which I called as soon as the oooh daddy Thing happened. He's a mess and so are all of his possible relationships (also kinky on main without wanting to be kinky on main) but at the same time if you go the "if you touch him right he melts" or "if someone railed him he'd calm down" route it's also believable, bc he's a mess, so you dont have to commit to a 60K angst fest to fix his life or make it worse either. Fandom bicycle pathetic little meow meow.

It's also why so much Blackbonnet content is about their reunion when it's not pure fluff or a pwp, it's the closest bit of relationship drama that has to be resolved (even if you flatten them into uwu cinnamon roll non-pirates and thus ignore any other issues they'd need to work on to make their relationship not implode, you still have this fight to resolve! If you dont do that both of them have so much shit to work on to survive past the honeymoon phase and get better as people together that you do probably need like 70K of fic, maybe a series. This is why they're the central relationship in canon lol. Given the Steddyhands fic Ive read it seems to me to have hit bc if you put Izzy in that mix it's so volatile they HAVE to talk shit out they cant just ignore their problems for 48 chapters without Izzy leaving or dying of stress??)

some specific figurative language stuff is what I struggle with like the Show don't tell rule, I also tend to ask lots of questions about my writing if Im even slightly unsure about one thing or the other in my writing

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

I've done it a few times and I really like it. To me it makes the characters feel more human and dynamic. I don't speak many languages so I usually get another person or a good translator tool to check me.

🛒 What are some common things you incorporate in your fics? Themes, feels, scenes, imagery, etc.

HMMM i've never really thought about this tbh...i do tend to write a lot of romance bc i'm a sucker for that, and love including themes like overcoming obstacles (i blame the whole 'fight god' shtick going on with jrpgs bc i ate that shit right up) or the struggle with destiny (free will vs predetermination). struggling and fighting is such a big part of character development and plot and i love thinking about different ways this can be portrayed depending on the character(s)

i also love including a lot of introspection and internal thoughts bc i enjoy diving into the thoughts and ideas of characters!! what they're feeling or thinking at a certain time, their justifications and motivations--it's soo important to me, esp if i want to include that sweet sweet yearning,,

i am proud of how much ive written cumulatively tho, bc apparently i have like 50k words on my ao3 account alone, and although id say about half of that is from rp/collab fics and not written on my own, i still have a good amount that i did write by myself! not to mention i dont post all of my writing onto ao3, so there's a lot of wips in my drive and uh...old fics on my ffn account LMAO (i do not perceive them) that i havent accounted for

ik word count doesnt mean anything, but i do consider it to be evidence of the fact that ive written. a reflection of how much ive come up with? id like to write again once im in the mood again and add to this and maybe one day, ill finally finish a chapter fic (even if it's short!)

🧐 Do you spend much time researching for your stories?

it depends on what i'm writing about, but when i do, i spend an embarrassing amount of time 😭 ive spent hours reading wiki articles for franchises i know enough about bc i like rereading things, or i accidentally wind up going to other pages and reading about them. it's not too bad tho bc sometimes ill wind up learning something new, clarifying a misconception, or just discover something i flat-out missed

on the other hand, ill sometimes just go 'fuck it we ball' bc ik i spend a little too much time researching that i wind up not writing at all, or it winds up being really complicated and i'm not able to understand it well enough to correctly convey in my writing

🤩 Who is your favorite character to write?

OH MAN this is kinda hard...but im gonna say it's probably alex, simply bc he's literally THE culmination of things that i love from other characters (archetype, features, that kinda thing). i love putting him through a lot and pushing his development. plus, the way he is makes it easy for me to bully him (affectionate) while also being able to get in my fix of angst

i just don't enjoy writing how he speaks bc i have this nebulous idea of what i want for his speech pattern, yet i'm not quite able to execute it in a way i like 😭 i'm p sure this is bc i love him a lot and want to be perfect with how i portray him, so thats holding me back

🎉 What leads you to consider a fic a success?

probably if i finish a fic. im still at the point where i dont consistently finish that many pieces so id like to at least be able to do that 😭

otherwise, if im liking my writing and how the fic's coming along, id consider that to be successful too and that i'm doing the right thing so far!

1- *counts open wip tabs* uhhhhh we'll be here a while xD I'll list them all and talk about my favorite!! I Should've Killed/Loved You, The Shenanigans of Cal Kestis and Caleb Dume, my untitled giving Cal a blaster fic, my untitled kanera fic, my untitled young Cal on Bracca fic, my untitled Ahsoka/Kaeden fic, and Oh the Things Being Surprise Adopted Will Bring- also probably loads more hiding in docs 💀 currently my work is split between my Bracca and Blaster fics, but my favorite has gotta be The Shenanigans of Cal Kestis and Caleb Dume hehe, im trying to work on the next part (slooooooowly) cause i really like writing these two 😭

18- Oooh that's a good one, they absolutely do 😂 do i remember them? uhhhh- there's one that's particularly memorable though, one of my v e r y old fics from when I was in the MCU fandom, i wrote a fic about a time traveling kid and i think i wrote about 4 different endings for it and it's still not finished LMAO

OHHH MY GOODNESS thoma fic is my new comfort fic don't mind me reading it over every time i have a bad day

ALSO EVERYTHING YOU SAID IN YOUR NOTES!! IT'S SO TRUE!! nonbinary reader fics are little to none :(( i know gender neutral readers are a thing but i swear half the time the authors slip up and end up using female terms anyway and it's a little frustrating. trans readers in general i feel like there aren't enough of!! if i had motivation i would write them myself and maybe sometime soon i will :')

AND PLATONIC/FAMILIAL FICS ARE ALWAYS SO CUTE AND FLUFFY ANDAAAAAA i honestly prefer them over romantic fics (that i also admittedly read because it's better than nothing). if i wasn't so nervous to request all of the time i swear my platonic/family fluff requests would take over the reader insert tags LMFAO

also also your qpr fics are just *muah* chef's kiss, i hope more authors start writing them one day
