much to be said about the young women in war and peace who show an active desire to be in society (natasha, hélène, lise, and julie) and how the men of the novel and, by extension, tolstoy, value their worth. in all cases the fate of each woman is determined exactly by how entrenched she is in society. andrei loved lise until she "joined society" and then he abandons her and rips her away from what made her happy. julie abandons her only true friend, marya, and ends up in a marriage where everyone can tell her husband doesn't love her except for herself. we don't even need to talk about the fate tolstoy thought hélène deserved. all of natasha's hardships happen as a result of her being enticed by that life, but she's spared once she retreats back into the safety of family and tradition

it's not some sort of groundbreaking statement to point out tolstoy's opinion of russian high society nor his opinion of women, really, but it's just interesting to look this idea of how the women are treated narratively in that regard. the madonna/whore complex is so rampant in this book, it's insane.

it's devastating. lise truly never did anything to hurt anyone and narratively she's punished solely for the fact that andrei doesn't like her anymore. she becomes just a fridged woman for andrei to mourn and compare natasha to when she stumbles into society

there's an uncomfortable read to how this shows the perceived difference between julie, someone who allows herself to enjoy society, and marya, someone who hates moscow and is therefore seen as superior to julie. julie appears relatively little, but in each circumstance it's to highlight a "wrong" sort of woman compared to a "right" sort, even in the beginning when sonya sees her with nikolai

and speaking of sonya, let's get into the absolute blatant mess of dolokhov's stance on women and their morals 🧍‍♀️

this is right before his proposal to sonya. sonya, who is someone far outside society at this point (and is also, notably, a child...), especially in comparison to hélène, who he blames her inability to love him on her "impurity." tolstoy didn't hold back with dolokhov and his clear-cut madonna/whore complex. there are the madonnas, the women in his family and a young girl who has never been around anyone but her family, and every other woman is a whore

(this excerpt also leads into a lot of my thoughts about the dynamic between hélène and dolokhov and my conspiracy theory that their "Affair" was nowhere near what it was made out to be, but that's a post for another day)

pierre's opinion of women, like tolstoy's, deals in extremes. the second natasha is no longer an innocent child, she's a "vile woman," just like how he views hélène

i think i'll end by airing out some frustration about how fans of the men of war and peace excuse these ideologies rather than denouncing them? i'd rather see a fan of them talk about their complicated feelings about women rather than go "haha its because he likes boys" because as real as that is, that feels like the weirdest copout in the face of just ....... misogyny. like i think they're gay too but that's not an excuse to ignore their women hating LMAO it just seems like it would be more interesting to dissect that and make for a good character study

that's a lot of the fun in being a fan of this book today, the opportunity to give life and analyze a character in a way that the author never would have. we can look at his flaws and make something better out of them! death of the author babey it's our city now!!! anyways these women deserve so much better, but that comes at absolutely no surprise

3. What ideas come from when you were little?

The main characters in the Mez/medieval mech setting - the two knights and two smiths - are all characters from my first writing project. Which didn't resemble Mez at all, it was an alt Earth in which people had powers, and each of the characters I mentioned lived in different parallel dimensions. The story was about "first contact" between parallel dimensions. I started writing that in 2008 (age 14) and finished in 2015. The setting had a lot of technical problems (unsurprisingly) but I couldn't abandon those characters and felt they deserved better than what I had given them

4. Fav character/subject that’s a bitch to draw

Human faces in general. There's a reason I keep blanking out people's features and it's not because I want to be mysterious. I'm highly face blind and have immense trouble even looking at photos of human faces lmao

7. A medium of art you don’t work in but appreciate

I was gonna say physical block printing but actually I do that now (did my first prints yesterday lol). Second place is definitely sculpture, I adore sculptures but it was always my least favourite medium to try myself

One of my favourite artists on tumblr is @mech-monster .. I've admired their work for years and as a lover of biomechanical art and aeroplanes it's right up my alley. I think their style is pretty emblematic of "art styles nothing like my own" lol but it's so wonderfully precise and technical. Love it

4. Fav character/subject that’s a bitch to draw

I mentioned faces in general but for a character I find challenging, I really struggle with drawing Pantera!

how could i possibly have known what I was setting myself up for when I made this design. A lot has changed true but its visor helmet thing is a key part of what Pantera is to me, so I can't get rid of it. But drawing that thing head-on is nightmarish

14. Any favorite motifs

I draw a lot of fleur de lises in the Mez setting because I like the design and think it's a nice visual shorthand for the time period. But each knight has their own motif - Victory's flames, Heaven's rounded more floral designs, etc. These reflect Pantera and Leun's primary weapons respectively.

One motif I'm sure everyone has spotted is the barley pattern that accompanies Pascal (modern inver setting), and one or more of his eyes are usually visible in the bg of any art of him (behind his body)

3. What ideas come from when you were little?

Another idea - honestly, the holy beasts (the mechs) in general. I was a massive zoids fan as a kid and I used to collect and build them. I was always fascinated by the setting, particularly the contrast between "ancient" advanced mech technology and the humans' relatively low-tech society (in the original anime/toy line). I wanted to make something like that. I still really enjoy contrasts like these. I mean the holy beasts WERE sort of just.. dug up out of the ground, exactly the same as zoids were

7. A medium of art you don’t work in but appreciate

Hrm honestly traditional painting. It's been years since I did it and I don't have the space or time to pick it up (i chose block printing instead) but I love it

If I REALLY want to listen to a certain podcast, I'll often start drawing just so that I'll be able to focus on the podcast and have something to do with my hands at the same time. A lot of my art comes from me just wanting to get through an episode of whatever. In early 2021 that was the magnus archives, these days I'm getting through Candlelit Tales Irish Mythology podcast which i SUPER recommend if you're interested in that kinda thing. It's on spotify

But generally I listen to music. I have a playlist for each setting, and each character in those settings. So if I'm drawing Pascal I'm listening to his playlist which is largely disco these days. Gets me in the mood

This is from before I aged up Finbarr from early 20s to mid 40s lol but you could say this is just him as a kid I suppose. But I really like it and all the details I managed to sneak in, and it was what got me started wanting to draw watery scenes more

19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)

Armour!!!! Who doesn't like armour. I also really enjoy drawing clothing from historical eras. Modern clothing and most futuristic/sci-fi ish takes on clothing are solidly boring to me though.

25. Something your art has been compared to that you were NOT inspired by

ohhh god where do I start. I got an ask comparing it to dangan ronpa recently lmao. Bluecifer. Disco Elysium. The Last Unicorn. Nope (2022 movie). I have nothing against any of them and I enjoyed those last three a lot but my art was not inspired by them and has nothing to do with them.

Also western/cowboy stuff in general. A LOT of people tag my horse art with #cowboy or related tags. I don't mind it but it is something that is not on my cultural radar, and not ever at the forefront of my mind when I draw horse things

3. What ideas come from when you were little

Round 3! Most of the Inver setting is very new (relatively, I mean it has no legacy characters from earlier stuff and I made it all within the past few years) but the decision to use the Púca as the main supernatural entity to base the story on did come from my childhood. My mother used to use Púca interchangeably with Taibhse so there was a lot of talk about him around hallowe'en in general when I was very young. I didn't realise that Púca and Taibhse meant different things until I was older lol but I still associate the Púca with hallowe'en and going out as a kid dressed in a black binbag (I was a scary witch). Because it had this nostalgic connection with my childhood and an era where I believed in scary ghosts and faeries around every corner, it was a very easy decision to make for my Inver setting, where there are in fact scary faeries around every corner

Another great time travel fix-it fic! I actually read the Fun With Time Loops series because I liked this fic so much and needed more lmao. There’s also a twist in the end that I didn’t see coming ;) It has so much angst for 9k I love XD I’d say that it’s a bit more explicit in the angst so be aware! Overall great read if you want something short and angsty but with a hopeful ending.

This series is amazing! It’s Loki struggling to deal with centuries of unresolved anger and hurt while simultaneously trying to cope with more recent events, the Void..Thanos. 

Basically, Loki just wants to go home, wherever that may be. Everyone’s trying, genuinely trying. You just gotta know when -how- to stop fighting. It’s very well written and It really dives into the psychological aspects of his trauma. Also, Odin actually cares for once lmao. This one is also pretty dark so be aware! 

Mistakes Made (And Corrected) by ADreamer67

In a different universe, Hela rebelled sooner. In a different universe, Hela Odinsdottir seduced Laufey with promises of power and convinced him to attack Midgard. In a different universe, Hela got pregnant, and didn't want to be. In a different universe, Hela left her newborn son for dead and went to face her father.

In a different universe, Loki Helajarson is two hundred and fifty years older than Thor. Let's see what happens.

Woah, just- this is so good!! It’s a very different take on Loki’s character but it’s still really fitting. After Thor is banished and the Odin sleep is fast approaching, Loki is to be king. Things don’t go very well for him, to say the least. I loved how the characters were portrayed and absolutely adored the dynamic between Loki and Thor. There’s so much angst and turmoil and it’s pretty dark so read the tags and be safe! 

Just Close Your Eyes by ADreamer67

Ragnarok has come to pass, the Asgardians have reached a deal with the leaders of Midgard for territory of their own, Loki is allowed to stay (provided he doesn’t leave said territory), and Thor is settled on the throne. So all in all, things are going well, if you ignore the recent massacre and planetary annihilation.

Well, except for the fact that Loki is working himself into the ground. And Thor is having none of it.

Cue a not entirely legal brotherly field trip where Thor will make Loki relax, or die trying. Responsibilities? Pssh, who cares about those? (Hint - Loki. Very much so)

That ceremony was interrupted by battle, and the child was left with the unguarded casket, in the hopes that the casket could keep it alive until it was safe to finish the ceremony.

This is so good!!! It’s one of the first fics I read in the fandom and it has really set my standards high. There’s so much angst and turmoil and it’s so well written. I absolutely adored the dynamic between the crew and how much Thor loves his brother even though Loki thinks he doesn’t deserve it. I really like the way ADreamer67 portrays the characters.

sometimes my hands don’t feel like my own by northofallmusic: ok i say ‘golden core fingering tentacle fic’ flippantly but it’s EXTREMELY serious okay. it’s not often that anything written by someone else actually hits that balls-out extremeness of utterly emotionally sincere and extrapolating from a baseline of Abomination Rights intensity of body-horror-wrapping-back-around-to-non-horror monsterfucking that actually satisfies let alone impresses ME, but this one does! same w the rest of this author’s mdzs works lol. shitton of holification vibes which is always good. anyway the golden core fingering is very reciprocated by ‘diy transhumanism bone fingering’ which i Won’t elaborate on.

you are my delightful intruder by hanguang_jacked (lmao): my girlfriend once described this by telling me ‘thanks for sending me that fic where lwj is a disaster autism and gets railed.’ this is actually my #1 favorite fic in the fandom and i’m annoyed that it manages to stitch like, Absolute Perfection into a object-impermanence meltdown and subsequent hyper-intimacy of marking kink RACK. the exquisite depiction of emotions(love)-too-big-and-intense-for-his-form stuff.

catharsis by niixna: there are about 900 ‘lwj grief pov set after wwx dies’ fics but this one is by far the best and most immaculately characterized and utterly devoid of self-consciousness or rationalism in the face of emotional sincerity, even though i’m pretty sure english is not the author’s first language and it’s extremely poorly edited and it shows. i am so picky about lwj characterization and this is like. the platonic ideal tbh. i never cry about stuff i read but i did at this.

like looking through a fogged mirror by xiyaogarbage (lmao!): extremely viciously thematically appropriate (especially for untamed verse) ‘au but is it necessarily an au?’ fic with the premise of ‘jin guangyao did not actually murder his son.’ it’s always ofc been obvious to me that the reason jgy is the unparalleled master of weaponizing this flavor of reputation-based plausible-deniability scapegoating against other people, is precisely because he himself has both observed and been victimized by its effectiveness, and he still continues to be. no one would believe him if he said he was innocent of just this one particular act — in this fic he doesn’t even entirely believe himself. it’s just fucking. incredible.

moonlight by staringatstars: honestly i’m not entirely sure WHY this is one of my favorite fics. ‘nie huaisang nie-huaisanging’ and ‘the collection of turmoil hot’ doesn’t cut it. the uneasily loose-ended and threatening thread of the progression of a political microcosm incident that meanders through a broad swathe of subjects is just good. i guess i just really like chief-cultivator!lwj fics that irresistibly remind me of ikuhara’s liner notes for the end of utena lol.

hills and rivers are waiting by LtLJ: this is a jin ling pov plotty case-fic and it’s perfect, all those yi city field trip/post-canon casefic extra novel chapters vibes. the other fics in this series are amazing too! general revelations about tingshan he, and wen ning song lan mianmian and jin ling scheming to set up their own mini sect, as a treat.

too much, not enough by shamelesscooper: i’m not sure HOW a fic of the bizarrely common interfandom cliche which i don’t even like that is ‘cis male character is cursed with a vagina and needs someone to fuck him in it to get his junk back’ managed to be one of the best wwx & jiang cheng relationship study fics i’ve ever read (and that’s Not a low bar), but it is.

translucent ties that gently bind by katoptris9: It’s short and there are ofc also 900 fics about lxc’s post-canon mental-health-scrapheap out there, but I mostly am reccing for the very cruel but believable self-awareness, and flashback to lxc’s pov of lwj’s drunken selfharm rampage lol

an aging wound by lise: a wwx & jc ‘’’’’reconciliation’’’’’ fic with the absolute most neurotic communication possible, i laughed so hard i hurt myself

my eclectic muse by tahto: okay i actually don’t really care much about anything in this fic EXCEPT its characterization of lan sizhui, which i’m COMPLETELY obsessed with. step on me.

sunshot outtakes by swordgrip: yiling laozu being hot. uh i mean. wwx and lwj wreck an entire repo’d mansion bedroom with uncontrolled magic power while fucking after killing a bunch of people in battle and it’s hot.

like the setting sun by silversshadow: i’m only partway through this series but the premise is basically ‘the lingering ghosts of the wen remnants manifest themselves and follow wwx and wen ning throughout the entire post-timeskip plotline, instead of just briefly appearing at the burial mounds’ and honestly this is just a concentration/externalization of everything that mdzs is about, the wish-fulfillment of murder victims clinging to the world to ensure their murderers come to justice instead of giving up the space they used to take up and proving how effective genocide is. the cultivation world as a system ostensibly intended to protect living ppl from ghosts but actually functioning as a system to suppress and erase dead victims of the gentry’s oppression and genocide LOL. can’t, unfortunately, speak to how effective it winds up given that i’m not finished. but i couldn’t pass up mentioning it.

Happy 26th birthday Lisa! i really hope you are having a ridiculously amazing time up there with a hugeeee birthday cake stuffing your face. you always loved cake i’m sure you still do. how are you? how’s things? Are you healthy? yeah okay suree babes you can’t fool me i hope you are eating cake as much as you desire lmao. and there is no one judging you - seriously cake is your weakness. You always wondered why it was a chocolate or a Victoria sponge for birthdays and i joked that it should be lemon drizzle and then you said “one of my birthdays i’m gonna have a carrot cake a three tiered one.” You were so adamant that its going to happen and all i can remember was the look of disgust on my face and your shocked face as if i just ran over your rabbit. I remember you questioned me and i was like “NOOOOOPe. that’s nasty” and we just laughed for ages at the thought of on our birthdays, there we will be one with lemon drizzle and one with carrot cake. so i hope you are eating a birthday carrot cake happily and celebrating with some awesome cool peeps, don’t be greedy and share! (please sneak a slice for Lolo Ernie and Tito Vic for me thanks :P)  and just to let you know, which i’m sure you do know. one day a year, on your birthday i always buy a carrot cake slice and i take one bite and then spit it out. Not gonna lie lise, every year when it reaches September, i dread your birthday. i’m sorry. September is a really weird month for me. its full of birthdays like my mums, my cousins and Zac so there are lot of things to celebrate but its always bittersweet when it comes to yours. It’s been 7 years Lisa. 7?!  thats a crazy amount of time that has flown by and they say it gets easier and i know in some ways it has but not really it’s just different and you have to adapt to it. Every year, i’m reminded that you aren’t here with us anymore and don’t get me wrong i’m so thankful for the memories that we shared, i’ve accepted that you are living happily somewhere but it’s just not fair.

i still feel guilty and lost sometimes when i think of you. i’m sure you are pulling that face of “Jo, don’t be stupid its all good” I’m still angry, still hurt, still guilty that you were cruelly taken from us because of a dumb ass drunk driver. i wish i could’ve told you to get a friend to pick you up from work or maybe listened to you when you told me you would walk home. but please understand that as your best friend, it was late and i didn’t want you to walk home alone at night. i’m glad that you got a taxi but Lisa. i wish you had put your fucking seat belt on. seat belts saves lives. i always said that. things could’ve been different.

I think your parents are doing alright. alright as they can be. i know you worry about them alot too and they worry about you also. Losing you taught us alot, taught me a lot. you changed us all. So i do wanna thank you, i found value in treasuring friendships and how it’s important to always tell your loved ones that you care. i still make mistakes now and then, forgive me. To actually do things that make you happy even if its small. To not be scared of the world. you were always so fearless and i admire that. i’ve gone on a shit load of emotional rollercoasters and still going but it’s okay and i’m doing good right now. i hope you are proud of me. i’ve got good people surrounding me keeping my heart strong and in my corner and i actually believe it. please don’t be angry with me for crying for you sometimes. i just miss you a lot. i feel that i will always be sorry and feel bad about not being able to say a proper goodbye.
