RIDING LESSONS | T. MILLER

You were working with the horses the day he came through the gate, you were taking off one of the horses saddles when you saw him for the first time. Snow had just began to fall, a thin layer of white covering the ground. His dark-coal hair stood out from the white sky as it sat near his shoulders, his moustache covering his nearly blue lips.

Even though he was covered in layers of clothing you could tell that he was strong, his biceps hugging the fabric. His shoulders were broad, covered with a thick denim jacket.

Your face went red in embarrassment as his golden brown eyes locked onto yours, but before you could advert your eyes he sent a warm smile your way. It was quick and sweet the way it all happened, nothing out of the ordinary it seemed on the outside. Not knowing that each other’s heart picked up a few more beats per second, Tommy was no longer worried about the chill on his fingertips. Instantly for no apparent reason his mind told him to walk up to you and introduce himself.

But before he could take a step towards you he was swooped away by Maria for a tour.

Growing up in Jackson, you were never interested in dating. You spent most of your teens busy surviving from infected to worry about what boys looked cute. You guessed without thinking you continued that way of thinking, even though growing to be a mature woman and living in a safe commune where you could live a ‘normal life’. Like many other people your age were finding partners, getting married and having kids you continued to work and keep yourself busy.

Since Tommy arrived, he had worked hard to find you again. He hoped he would patrol so he would have an excuse to go to the stables and talk to you. But no luck, he had been working non stop helping patch up some buildings before the snow was at its heaviest. He had been installing a new roof on one of the shops when he saw you walking along the streets with some crates.

Even though you were wrapped in a thick coat and your hair was covered in a beanie, he still recognised you. Standing up Tommy told the others he’d be back.

You were trying to carry more than one crate at once, even though your arms weren’t long enough to do so you still tried. ‘Your a stubborn one’ he thought to himself as he got closer. Fog flew from your mouth as you huffed in frustration.

You jumped when you felt another hand brush past yours and lift the crates out of your arms. “You're alright, I got it.” You blushed, as he flashed you that same smile when you first saw him, it never failed to send you butterflies. “Thank you—“ You dragged, realising that you in fact hadn’t figured his name yet.

“—Tommy.” He finished for you, his Texan accent made your stomach do somersaults. “Where you want these darlin’?”

“Oh, just drop them off at the bar thank you. Got some orders to drop off today.” You tried your best to compose yourself, usually when men in town would flirt you would let them down softly. Say the usual line, sorry not interested. But this man you had barely met had you intrigued.

“Y’need any help?” Tommy placed the boxes down for you with ease then resting his fists on his hips as his eyes landed on you again. You couldn’t help but pause again, the way his muscles formed under the sleeves of his shirt. Or how his hair stuck to his ivory skin, even though it was absolutely freezing he still had broken a sweat. There was just something about his eyes on you that made you melt into a puddle.

“Uh yeah sure, if you're not busy. But I was going to have a bite to eat first if you wanted to join me?”

It was nearing Christmas and you and Tommy were getting pretty serious. Doing all the things that couples do, he spent so much time at your house anyway he basically lived there so that transition went smoothly. You went on dates, amazing ones.

Just a few weeks ago he had taken you on the horse out to a secret lookout he had found on his travels. And to say it was beautiful was an understatement, he found a spot and the two of you sat near the edge of the high cliffs and watched the water. You hadn’t ever really been outside of Jackson much, you never really had a reason too. “Maybe I’ll take you out further next time, find a nice little place to camp for the night.” He told you, draping his arm to hang loosely over your shoulders. It was relaxing, being with him you never felt any pressure to do anything you didn’t want to.

“I think I’d like that.” You responded honestly, never would you of gone out here with any of the other boys you dated. But from some of the stories he told you about himself, you knew that he’d take care of you.

And he did extremely well, a part of you felt bad that you couldn’t do more, when it came to being in a relationship. Sexually that is. But you couldn’t stop the anxious feeling you got whenever the subject was mentioned. ‘What if I’m not good enough at it? What if it hurts? What if he gets sick of waiting?’ That was your biggest fear, so you had a plan to lose your virginity.

Everyone had been working hard to pull together a big dinner for everyone, roast chickens from the pen inside the compound and lots of vegetables. There was even kids playing along the street by the giant Christmas tree. They had been doing this here since they had the supplies for it so this was something you were used to. Tommy on the other hand, looked taken aback. “What do you think?”

“I haven’t seen anything like it in years.” He smiled as his hand squeezed yours in reassurance, that he was happy. You knew that he had left his brother in Boston QZ, so you understood that this was going to be hard for him. You hoped you could do a good job of distracting him tonight, after dinner.

As soon as Tommy closed the door behind you, both of you stripped off your coats. The fireplace was blaring heat throughout the home. You were taking off your boots when a pair of hands spun you around. Tommy wrapped his arms around you and placed a chaste kiss on your lips. “Thanks for tonight baby. I loved it.” He spoke softly, his eyes softening as he smiled.

You took this as your chance, you moved in for another kiss. Except now you pushed onto his lips harder, wanting to fill the space between you. Wrapping your arms around his neck you moaned into his mouth, his rough hands danced up your spine, sending you goosebumps. Tommy was surprised at the way you leaped onto him, not that he was complaining.

Tommy was expecting to have a quiet night in, the two of you huddled up on the sofa and you reading to him the newest book he found for you on his last patrol. He thought he was going to fall asleep in your lap, and he would have been happy with that.

Not that he complained when you grasped his wrist in your hand and dragged him up the hallway and pinned him against the closed door, kissing him fevently.

As his lips dragged down along your jaw, Tommy took another step forward. The two of you moving past the door, you let out a small gasp as the back of your knee met with the soft fabric of your bed. ‘Holy shit you're actually going to do this?’ You tried to ignore that part of your brain as your body instinctively fell backwards into the mattress.

Tommy soon followed, climbing over the top of you has his chest hovered just a few centimetres above you. His shoulder length hair curtaining you from the outside world, you were safe here— just the two of you. Your fingers laced through his curls and tugged on them, needing him as close to you as possible.

mid-year book freak out tag

years go by... i still read books...

1. Best Book You’ve Read So Far in 2023? moby dick! i totally did not expect to like this dusty tome so much but it was just too perfect a mix of tropy revenge tale, sea adventure mockumentary, and making stuff up and putting it into categories that caused pleasant vibrations in my neurodivergent brain. i have watched so many whale documentaries after reading this, you guys have no idea🐳

2. Best Sequel You’ve Read So Far in 2023? flamefall is the second book in the aurelian cycle and it’s the best sequel i’ve read so far this year. the addition of a slow burn mm master/servant story line improved things considerably, not to mention that it was my favorite character’s time to shine. this series is sooo good, please read it guys you won’t regret it i swear🙏

(ngl i’m a bit annoyed that fourth wing, this fireborne sjm-ified, is doing numbers out there and meanwhile there’s no fandom for the aurelian cycle to speak of😒)

also i simply have to mention defekt, book two of litenverse. i found the first book quite boring despite it’s shortness but the sequel has a sad lil guy🥺. highly recommend for fans of black mirror, severance or the murderbot diaries. you don’t reeeally need to read book one btw, i think you can just read the description and then jump straight to the good stuff

3. New Release You Haven’t Read Yet, But Want To? i want to read witch king but i keep putting it off cause everything i hear about it sounds suspiciously like *american author does mdzs* and idk how i feel about that😬

4. Most Anticipated Release For Second Half of 2023? i’m looking forward to system collapse the most bc it’s gonna be set chronologically after network effect and it’s longer than the other murderbot novellas too. very excited to see murderbot and art bicker again hehe

5. Biggest Disappointment? ig it’s the warrior’s apprentice😬 many people recced the vorkosigan saga to me as “the lymond chronicles in space” but based just on this first(-ish) book i have to say miles is uhhh,, not lymond😐 lymond’s key traits are that he’s queer and a cunt and baby miles is simply not that (yet). of all the other books that people mentioned on my overcompetent scheming bastard post this was the last one i hadn’t read so i was a bit disappointed that it didn’t pull me in like the lymond chronicles. however, of all the books mentioned there it’s also the only series i can see myself continuing any time soon so. it wasn’t all too bad ig🤷‍♀️

i was also somewhat disappointed by assassin’s apprentice but i will make myself push through the realm of the elderlings just bc i’m so intrigued by the fool👀

6. Biggest Surprise? apart from the life changing experience that was moby dick i gotta admit i didn’t expect to like the goblin emperor, what with it being one of those cozy hopepunk fantasies where people are nice and decent to each other🙄 but it really did grow on me by the end, it indeed made me feel cozy and soothed. now i wanna try katherine addison’s older darker stuff that was apparently so controversial she had to change her pen name or smth👀🤭  

7. Favorite New Author? so i read another book by christopher rice and can confirm that he’s now one of my favorite authors. the man’s early 2000s gay thrillers are very melodramatic and refreshingly juicy - you can really tell they were published in ye olden pre-twitter times

8. Newest Favorite Character? cyrano savinien hercule de bergerac. after just reading that first act where he monologues about his nose for three pages straight and then spends all the money he has to hijack a theater and cause a scene by duelling a guy on stage while insulting him in ballad form i thought wow but this is one of my sexy fucked up guys who like to swish their swords and run their mouths! please enter the mind rotation chamber, monsieur🙌

9. Newest Fictional Crush? power sur eater🐉 you guys are sleeping on the aurelian cycle and on the Glory and Tragedy of My Boy who has done nothing wrong ever in his life and i love him😭 seriously, if you’d like to watch a character like draco malfoy go through jaime lannister’s arc you gotta read this series

💕Best Ship💕 the relationship of griff and delo in the aurelian cycle was SO dramatic and full of rawest scenes! kinda reminded me of captive prince at times, bc of the whole master/servant element. and the ending? “i will grow old in love, let them sing of others”?? i am Emotion🥺

10. Book That Made You Cry? furysong made me cry my eyes out like every ending to a ya series should. have i mentioned you should read the aurelian cycle btw? but also both moby dick and cyrano de bergerac made me laugh AND cry as only really good books do. there’s a part in moby dick about seeing whales in mountains and stars that made me remember i am a human being and was a small and happy human being once - like that scene in ratatouille when anton ego tastes ratatouille and the nostalgic memories hit him and he becomes not evil anymore. that was nice but i cried like a little bitch😭

11. Book That Made You Happy? re-reading twittering birds never fly without skipping all the yakuza plot scenes made me realize how hilarious this manga actually is! yashiro can obviously crack a joke but this time i discovered the comic relief goldmine that is nanahara

Favorite Book Adaptation You Saw This Year? i have a LOT of criticisms about martin crimp’s “free adaptation” of cyrano de bergerac but ngl it was fun to watch the play come to life on stage (even tho there were no swords, a crime😒) and even more fun to watch christian kiss cyrano on the mouth like god intended

13. Favorite Review You’ve Written This Year? so this year i actually started reviewing stuff on goodreads for the first time and it’s quite fun and really useful for refreshing your memory on what you thought of a book. i try to go for short and witty over in depth and analytical so i suppose the best examples of the reviews i have written so far would be the ones of moby dick and the goblin emperor

14. Most Beautiful Cover? the og red cover of fireborne slaps! the revolutionary red? the minimalist black dragon? the main characters’ profiles formed by its wings?? talented brilliant show stopping. idk who made the decision to redesign the covers after the first book but that decision was utterly stupid🤨

15. What Books Do You Need To Read By The End of The Year? i need to finish some series (the diviners, the dreamhealers, the broken earth), then like i said i want to read witch king and also i’m doing the classics challenge again so i have to at least finish reading roxelana and re-read the picture of dorian gray (the uncensored edition👀). i have looked up my old mid year tags and was pleased to discover that i since have managed to read all the books mentioned there EXCEPT for you love me which has been a staple in my reading plans since 2021 so i’m gonna put it on this list again to honor the tradition lmao

overall i have to say my reading year is going well but i still miss the exhilaration of discovering new books worth obsessing over like it kept happening in 2019-2021 with the secret history, captive prince, all for the game, mdzs and lymond. last year i used to think i wasn’t doing a good job of finding books like this but now i’m starting to suspect that i have actually read ALL the good books and there aren’t any left :( but that’s absurd right?? or isn’t it?! anyways tell me what you’ve been reading so that i can maybe get intrigued by something and prove myself wrong on this🙏📚

Ok girlies I’m here w the tea !

I follow some larries and was v bored so I got the link to everything and let’s just say I used to like harrys music but not anymore 🤺.

Anyways, starting w the good bc I’m nice , the hs1 leaks were two shallow songs and one was clearly the proceeder to watermelon sugar, but it was lowkey a bop. The 1d demos were so bad that everyone on my dash was reblogging a post thanking Louis for firing the 1d writers(😭😭).

Oh Anna does go hard ngl. Now a new song called satellite was catchy as hell and actually cohesive w some depht too and that’s the only fully good thing I have to say abt his new stuff 😬. One called daydream had nice production too but very basic lyrics. The sex one he debuted at cochella was catchy but it’s the least Sexy sex song I’ve ever heard… it’s giving suburban vanilla and annoying peoples sex lives. Most this album has absolutely no depht and when it does it’s about a literal fictional character(Matilda) or it’s self pity. Never feeling bad for the people he talks about wronging though 🤓.

Now for the bad… most of the album sounds like it was written by a 5th grader. Idk if he did that on purpose but lord Jesus Christ what I ended up doing is putting the few decent songs in a playlist w a bunch of his old songs I downloaded for this ✨experiment✨and lord… even the sound is extremely lacking compared to fine line/hs1 honestly. The harmonies have no women this time and his old stuff all has rlly nice harmonies. The sound is literally just boring as hell. The fucking sushi and driving songs… death. We already know about the confusing conjugate switch in the whiny boyfriends one… as if he’s not a BOYfriend😭.

The one song that’s clearly for larries is literally bitter as hell saying “I shouldn’t have let u go, i used to sneak u around, I’m not gonna try w u again, I can’t write an interesting bridge, xx angst, u were the loml.”

The song called little freak is him admitting to wronging someone (I don’t think Louis) and getting karma. The one about wine is him saying he found the perfect person (who he would sneak away 👁👁) and then he chose “something old and red” instead of what was perfect for him, and now he’s paying for it hardcore ( karma 💜). The one called daylight is abt dating the most lame ass crackhead Hollywood trash. Def NOT about Louis( the details don’t match him).

Matilda has nice songwriting and did make me a lil emotional bc I relate a lot to the story. That’s the only deep/pretty song on there.

The one about objectifying Olivia Wilde made me go through the 5 stages of grief. BUT WHATS WORSE IS THAT HIS VOCALS LITERALLY HAVE NO EMOTION IN MOST THESE SONGS. Like not at all. His vocals are fine and his falsetto is smooth but idk he just sounds lifeless.

I just don’t get how the same guy who made fine line or hs1 made these songs. When Louis says happy songs can be lame and cheesy and says most songs need a guitar… THIS is what he’s talking about.

I honestly can’t believe there are people who ship show DarklingxAlina even after all the manipulation and mental abuse... like he really exhibits traits of toxic significant others,,,, making her feel like no one can understand her except for him, using her for her powers and acting like he literally owns her, cutting her off from the world and her friends, and lying to her friends, threatening them, and going behind their backs to manipulate Alina into liking him like??????

And there’s some people who are like “oh but befOre the reveal he clearly likes hER and oMg the cute forehead moments and ‘looks’ he givES HER” and I’m just like??? no????? Bottom line is he was manipulating and abusing her from the start, and even before the reveal it was super obvious the chemistry and story writing was pushing Mal/Alina and there was like no actual development for the Darkling’s relationship with her other than one moment of “bonding” over loneliness that was completely contrived and URGH can people just stop romanticizing it :(

Ngl it is absolutely not surprising that people are into it. It’s the exact type of a ship that gets popular. It’s about the light/darkness, the villain/hero, the idea of a powerful man offering you the world. But yeah I absolutely hated it in the books, as it is neither played as a sexy power fantasy thing, nor as a “this is creepy and you should avoid it” scenario. Like, the Darkling is aggressive, never asks for consent, violent and straight up a monster, but somehow Alina is STILL attracted to him???? Excuse me?????? Alina  being a child only makes it 1000 times worse, as it’s pointed out the man had centuries to figure out how to manipulate a teen girl into feeling special and loved and get her to fulfil all his requests at a wave of his hand, but THEY NEVER EFFIN LET ALINA REACT TO IT PROPERLY AND INSTEAD WE GET THE STUPID “SHE STILL LOVED HIM” LINE..... God I hate those books. But yeah the shippers don’t dwell on the bad parts, and like, that’s fair, to each their own, interpreting fiction is everyone’s right

HOWEVER!!!!! It seems the show is wayyy more interested in properly defining what the fuck was going on between them? The Darkling is - all together now - way softer and kinder than in the books, all the rapeyness gone. Alina is older and a much more solid character, so when she gets manipulated by promises of power and forever, it’s easier to get invested since I’m not one step away from vomiting whenever they are alone. Like, they made me feel stuff. He DOES look at her a certain way, the kisses were both done really well, and the loneliness is the driving force of the season so it makes sense. It’s still fucked up but at least I understand where both of them are coming from... AND THEN they point out how it has been manipulation from the start. He never gave her a choice in joining him, and she finally realized how horrible he’d treated her. His feelings and love for grisha aren’t excuses for his treatment, and the show made sure we understood that. I sure hope this is the end on the love development and we just get heartbroken ex Darkling running after a very disgusted and heartbroken Alina. Pls writers, do this tiny lil thing for me, pls don’t make me see the stupid shit from book 2, plea s e ,

So decided to do a lil thing! Gonna explain my choices for different Redacted Playlist I've made (and am still working on)

Starting with Gavin and the Freelancer, cause rn their playlist is the longest and can be found HERE

I also want to preface this with, if a song is gendered one way or another I just tried to ignore it. Unfortunately, there aren’t as many songs where the second party is not given pronouns :c 

So the first few are just general ones that I felt had the vibes for the duo (there are a LOT of sexual vibes in this one, for obvious reasons), and I don’t really have a specific reason for picking them. Those are

The Devil's Backbone by The Civil Wars

I imagine this song is from Freelancer's perspective, set during the period of time where Gavin was being questions for breaking covert. Specifically how the song says “There wasn’t a wrong or a right he could choose, he did what he had to do.” with how he chose to help Caelum free Ivan from Vega’s grasp of his own because he knew it was the only way. Then the line “Don’t take that sinner from me.” Where they don’t really know what’s going on and are just scared because he is gone. I feel that's probably the time frame when they truly realized how in love with him they were. 

Deity by Valeree

This is 100% Gavin to the Freelancer. I legit heard it and was like "this is something Gavin would fuckin say". This is def more set before they get into their relationship. Hell the song even starts with “Honey, you look lost” and their first interaction the Freelancer was looking for directions lol.  Also the “i don’t believe in punishing the sinner, unless punishment’s the kind of love you want.” that is LEGIT something he would say and no one can change my mind.

Somebody - Crimson Apple

This is one of the ones I feel is again the Freelancer to Gavin, but it could also work the other way as well. But the way i hear it, this feels like pre-romance but set around the time that everything was hitting its peak (the Kody situation, the stuff with Vega, their school stress) and this song is their plea to Gavin since he was the only thing NOT going bad during that time. He is giving them something to cling onto even if it is just chilling and the sexy times, the line that sticks out the most is “Eyes as deep as the ocean, set me free for a moment.” They needed that release from the stress of everything going on. 

Only Wanna Dance With You - Kesha

Ngl, this also just had the right vibes for them. But it gets a special mention because it talks about "playing hard to get", "falling in love on accident" and the most important mention "7-11" 🤣. 

Walls by All Time Low

So this one is another that could be from both perspectives. Obviously Gavin had a lot of walls surrounding his heart and it took a bit for him to come to terms with the fact that he loved the Freelancer. But from what we got about the Freelancer, they also have those same types of walls (Ex. Lying to Lasko about their parents accepting their magic, not telling Gavin LITERALLY ANYTHING THAT WAS HAPPENING TO THEM, etc. etc.) So this feels like a coming to terms that they’re in love with the other and wanting to stop keeping themselves walled off.

Sinners by Lauren Aquilina

This was picked for 2 reasons. Reason 1: The second verse starts with “You showed me feelings I’ve never felt before. We’re making enemies, knocking on the devil’s door.” So that like, obviously Gavin has felt desire from people but he hasn’t felt that love that he and the Freelancer share. Then that second line reminded me of the whole Vega situation. And Reason 2: the chorus says “The world may disapprove, but my world is only you. And if we’re sinners then it feels like heaven to me” and that just...knowing that Gavin is kind of shunned and looked down upon by the rest of his people. That line really hit home to that. I could legit hear him saying that, or a line similar to the Freelancer.

The only reason I even knew Vaggie (also I hate her name like why? Why name her that?) was a moth demon was because of the fandom.

I like bows when it makes sense for the character, might just be me but from what we’ve seen of her she just doesn’t seem like one to have a giant bow in her hair.

Alastor supposed to be a deer demon? I didn’t know the guy even had antlers at first glance. I also genuinely had no idea those were his frickin ears! I thought it was just a weird hairstyle bc why not?

I’m with you on Nifty’s design, I love it, would like to see more of her.

Personally I like Angel’s design because I think it suits him. Sexy and cute, but that’s really it. I went for a long time thinking he was intersex male bc of the fur titties! Like I thought they had a legit purpose and I thought it was cool to see inclusion and positivity of that! But no it’s just fur with the magical properties to act like boobs because yea

Also he was apparently a mobster in his previous life? A former mobster is where I would expect to see pin stripe suits- I also personally think his suit is too close in color to his skin/fur. It’s kind of confusing to me

This is all strange to me because I like watching hazbin/helluva, but like as just a funny lil thing to see- my brand of comedy isn’t really in line with the rampant amount of sex jokes that go on there but I can find humor in them. My fav is prob when angel taunts/teases/?? The snake dude by saying “harder daddy” but snake dude immediately goes “SON?? 🥺” and angel’s face after getting that response was hilarious to me.

I tend to try to stay out of fandom drama and especially ignoring the creator(I love Harry Potter but wow JK Rowling really turned out to be like that huh?) because I want to enjoy the story/content we get but…does she seriously refuse to take criticism? Like ever? You said she’s only responded to overly positive views on it right? I couldn’t imagine that, how am I supposed to learn without criticism?

On a slightly different note; have you seen the over analyzations that fandom has down? I’m speaking for just the newest episode, and while I find them interesting to read it’s hard to think these things go that deep/anything from that will stick around/character developments or 5min and then next episode back to normal

Oh, haven't you heard? Vaggie's original name was VAGYNA. I'm not making that up. And yeah she really doesn't look like a moth, nor does Alastor look much like a deer. It's also kinda hilarious that Angel's the character pinstripes would fit the best given his background and time period, yet he's one of the only dudes in Hazbin who don't wear them.

Yeah ngl, the "Son?" part was funny to me too. Too bad nearly every line out of Angel's mouth was sexualized. These writers are aware sex workers know conversation topics unrelated to their job, right? Being "on" like that 24/7 would be exhausting, I'm sure.

Viv is a perfect example of what happens when artists refuse to take criticism. She keeps falling back on the same tired visual tropes she's used in her designs for years. It's hard to learn from your mistakes if you deny you've made any.

Yeah I've consciously avoided falling down the fan theory rabbit hole for Hazbin/Helluva because I value my mental health. But I have seen the odd Youtube thumbnail with a title like, "Is Blitzo Part Succubus?" and this was my exact reaction: "Oh my god, who. The hell. Cares." These folks are reading WAY too far into things when the writers couldn't even manage believable character reactions. And y'all are speculating about lore and shit? PFFFF.
