It annoys me how tumblr's app doesn't display your art in the crisp, HQ beauty that it is. We should all complain about it. I love your work.

Oh boy, this is a topic dear to my heart. I hope you won’t regret hitting my nerve, because this issue and I, we’ve got some history, so buckle up because it’ll be a long, nerdy ride.

Before retina displays came along, if everything else in your OS was set correct, and you would display an image at 100%, then one pixel in your image would map onto one pixel of your (LCD) monitor. There’s only one way to do this, so if the source image was sharp (as it is in pixel art, including manually scaled pixel art) the displayed image was sharp. I’m saying manually scaled, because from a 100×100px pixel art image, you can make a 500×500px image by enlarging it 5x with nearest-neighbor interpolation in your drawing software, which creates a big, but still sharp version of your pixel art. If on the other hand you let the browser do automatic scaling (you give it 100×100px image and instruct it to display it at 500px width), browsers by default use higher order interpolation (bilinear, bicubic etc). This smooths out the edges, which is great for photos, but not so great for pixel art. The result is a blurry image.

So if you enlarged the image manually for Tumblr’s 500px wide dashboard (today it’s 540px), Tumblr didn’t have to change the image’s size, so it left it as it was, keeping pixels sharp. Everyone is happy. Back in those days I spent a lot of time and effort cropping images to 500/540px so that on the dashboard they would appear crisp as fuck.

Enter retina displays. Now each pixel in the OS was displayed by 4 pixels of the LCD display (2×2). Great for vector things, such as text. Great for photos, where you see 4x more details at the same physical display size. Bad for pixel art, because a 540px image uses 1080 retina pixels per row, interpolation needs to get turned on, and its the blurry, bilinear kind. 

“OK, Retro,” you say, “then we will upload a 1080px image, and interpolation won’t happen.” Nice idea, but what Tumblr does is, it takes the image you uploaded, saves the HD version (which can be up to 1280px wide), but also makes a number of variants for sizes at 540px, 500px, 400px, 250px … And yes, it does this downsampling by using interpolation = blurry pixel art. The way Tumblr displays images on the dashboard, they show the 540px image, even if you’re on retina and you could technically see up to 1080px of information. It saves on bandwidth, but also renders the 1080px upload idea impossible.

Now this is all desktop, computer version, in your browser. What they do in apps is harder to tell, because there are many more screen sizes they have to worry about and I’m guessing things vary between apps. What I can say is that on my iPhone 5s, it’s just as bad as on the website. The 540px native image that Tumblr didn’t scale gets fucked up due to app/iOS scaling, and the 1080px image gets scaled by Tumblr first to 540px (and then again up by the OS scaling) so it’s all the same crap.

Could Tumblr do any better? Yes, but it would require a convention. Because higher-order image interpolation produces better quality in general, it makes sense for it to be turned on by default. They would have to agree on a tag, for example “pixel art” or “crisp-edges”/“pixelated” (if they wanted to mimic the CSS image-rendering directive), that would trigger rendering using nearest neighbor interpolation. As of now, I don’t know any general website that does this. Even DeviantArt, where you semantically choose your image to be pixel art, they don’t use this information to change the way they render the image.

What can you do yourself? You can force your browser to use nearest neighbor interpolation. I made an extension for Safari that does this (called Pixelize), and I think there should be others for other browsers. Obviously I don’t want it turned on all the time, so it’s a button in your toolbar that you can hit when you need it.

For your mobile app, you don’t have any such power. The best I can say is to upload images as big as possible and let the browsers just do the downsizing. This doesn’t apply to tumblr, because it manually creates the shitty 540px version that it then displays enlarged, but for any other network, if they actually display the high-res original (or at least x2 the OS pixels, as it should be on retina displays), you’ll get decent enough quality. 

Quick note for Twitter: inserting at least a pixel of (semi) transparency forces it to save the image as png, which uses lossless compression. If there is no transparency, they will default to saving it as jpg, which creates blurriness/noise due to lossy compression, which is another topic altogether. Don’t even get me started on the idiotic decision to convert GIFs to videos. I’m glad I was able to convince Medium to change back (yes, you can thank me for that, because I am passionate about this).

One final thing needs to be said, of which I was reminded by Cyangmou. Pixel art, or better said old game graphics, were never sharp to begin with. They were displayed on blurry CRTs where pixels bled into each other. Dithering, for example, worked extra well due to this. So when I see ZX Spectrum art today, I’m not even mad if I see it with bilinear image interpolation. It’s actually closer to the original than sharp pixels. Sharp, big pixels are a unique idea to pixel art as an art style and it’s just that, an art style. We love it because of its own inherent interesting look, but it’s not actually something we’d have a nostalgic attachment to, because things never looked like this back then. We do have a nostalgic connection with the characters, the sprites, but their modern pixel art rendering is a new construct. That doesn’t mean it’s not good to display old sprites sharp (as you can see I spend much effort to do so), it’s just an interesting thing to keep in mind.

Bottom line: Don’t worry about it. Looking at art on Tumblr, Twitter, Facebook, etc. is like looking at Mona Lisa in Walmart. Besides, you might care, but 99% of people, including your fans, don’t. In 5 seconds they’ll be 3 screens away from your image already. The way we consume art on the Internet today is (especially on social media): we see an image, we acknowledge it, “Oh, that’s nice,” we double tap for a like, and we move on. Less than 3 seconds. I might sound bitter, but I’m not. I do this too. But I also want places dedicated to looking at art, just like I go to an art gallery once in a while. It’s why you can see images in my new blog design without any distractions (click on them). It’s why you can do the same in my Pixel Dailies archive. It’s why Pixel Art Academy will take this even further. I care. Just not on social media. Long are the days when I spent 1h cropping images so they’d appear sharp on the Tumblr dashboard.

The 2021 Lexus RX 450h F Sport hybrid crossover is sinuous, frugal and impressively quiet — exactly what I want in a luxury vehicle. There is, however, one aspect of this Lexus that’s unforgivable, a mortal sin that drags down an otherwise pleasant vehicle: the infotainment system.

Hybrid versions of the RX come standard with all-wheel drive, but this example is also fitted with the F Sport package, which includes dress-up items like a unique grille, aluminum pedal covers, 20-inch wheels and even performance dampers. For extra sportiness, a $970 handling package is also offered, bringing an adaptive suspension system, retuned power steering and more goodies to the table. Beyond those F Sport upgrades, my tester features the Black Line Special Edition package. The good news is this upgrade costs just $685 and includes special body-side graphics, a black grille surround and a Halliburton Edge lightweight two-piece luggage set. The bad news is the Black Line Special Edition package is limited to just 750 gas-powered RXs and 250 hybrid models.

The Lexus RX’s styling is certainly aggressive, with its comically large grille, angular headlamps and chiseled surfacing, but its interior is much more restrained and pleasant. The cabin’s quality is stellar and its materials are generally very good. The headliner and roof pillars are wrapped in a flannel-like fabric, soft plastics are used liberally throughout and nearly all the switches and knobs feel slickly lubricated. Sure, you’ll find a smattering of Toyota-sourced buttons here and there; stuff you get in, say, a Camry, but these carryover controls are well hidden and hardly objectionable.

Just behind this Lexus’ unusually deep dashboard, the front bucket chairs are all-day comfortable and attractive, rendered in black and white with contrasting blue stitching, a combo that’s also part of the Black Line Special Edition package. Storage space up front is good, consisting of a decently sized bin under the center armrest, a few other small cubbies on the console and generously proportioned front door pockets that pop outward when you pull on them. Moving rearward, the RX’s backseat is nearly sprawl-out spacious, with plenty of legroom and a decent amount of noggin space. Comfortable cushions provide great support, with the lower one being a nice distance above the floor for a chair-like seating position. Providing easy access, this Lexus’ rear doors open nice and wide.

But now for some bad news. If there’s a worse infotainment system than what’s offered in this Lexus, I’m not aware of it. With a bewildering user interface as well as a clunky and difficult-to-use control pad on the console, this multimedia system is half laptop, half low-end Android tablet and all kinds of terrible. Not only is the menu structure confusing, the track pad you use to navigate through it is kludgy, making even simple tasks a distracting chore. Rubbing salt in the wound, this RX 450h is also fitted with the top-shelf 12.3-inch screen (an 8-incher is standard), which is bundled in a $3,365 options package, so you’re paying thousands more for an awful experience. At least that outlay also gets you embedded navigation and a superb Mark Levinson sound system that makes even highly compressed MP3s and muddy satellite radio come alive. While a bit of a reach, the RX’s infotainment screen is touch-enabled, so you can skip the trackpad, but only if your arms are lanky enough. Thankfully, this system also supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (as well as Amazon Alexa), so you don’t have to use the infotainment system any longer than it takes to plug your phone in. The vehicle’s six USB ports ensure everyone’s mobile devices are fully juiced; a wireless charging pad is also available.

The RX’s interior is extremely well built and refined, though its infotainment tech leaves much to be desired.

The Lexus RX was updated in 2020, gaining a stiffened structure and revised suspension for better handling. This year, the vehicle gains some new technology, including blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, both of which are now standard across the range. Auto-dimming, power-folding mirrors are included at no extra charge, too, as is Lexus Safety System Plus 2.0, a suite of driver aids that includes daytime cyclist detection, low-light pedestrian detection, road sign recognition and lane-keeping assist. Thankfully, I have not had an opportunity to test the pedestrian-detecting systems, but the lane-keeping aid is gentle yet quite effective.

Underway, the RX 450h is one smooth operator. Whether you’re traversing frost-heaved highways, tiptoeing along a cratered dirt road or just cruising around your subdivision, this Lexus’ ride is always sinuous. Even rolling on 20-inch wheels, small expansion joints barely register and larger impacts are easily deflected, all with no harshness or gritty vibration percolating through to the passenger compartment. Despite its smooth ride, the RX 450h’s body is decently controlled. Sure, it could feel a bit tighter in corners and it might be nice if the steering were quicker and heftier, but the whole chassis feels so well balanced that these changes aren’t necessary, plus they might ruin the fluffy ride, which would be a shame.

Refined, punchy and economical, there’s little to complain about regarding the RX 450h’s powertrain.

Matching its over-the-road refinement, the RX’s cabin remains incredibly silent, quieter than naptime in a nursing home, with almost no wind, tire or engine noise being heard. The RX 450h’s hybrid powertrain is built around a 3.5-liter V6, one augmented by two electric motor-generators up front that form a continuously variable transmission, and a separate motor at the rear, which provides all-wheel drive. Whispering while it works, this arrangement provides a net 308 horsepower, though a torque figure is not listed because the math with hybrids is weird. On its own, however, the V6 engine whips up 247 pound-feet of twist. The RX 450h’s easy handling and all-wheel drive add immensely to my confidence one day as the weather goes from drab to dangerous, with a winter storm dumping sleet on the roadways.

Stand on the accelerator and this Lexus scoots. Performance, while not awe-inspiring, is still very good, the engine sounding like it’s operating far off in the distance rather than a few inches ahead of your toes. The hybrid parts of this drivetrain are similarly polished, barely drawing any attention to themselves. The brake pedal is also friendly, with a seamless transition between regenerative and friction braking. For added versatility, the RX 450h offers an EV mode, which allows you to run it solely on electrons. The onboard battery pack has enough juice for you to sneak down a cul-du-sac or into the garage without running the engine, but as soon as you go too fast or prod the throttle too aggressively the engine fires up. Remember, this is not a plug-in hybrid, so electric-only range is not the primary focus.

Cutting fuel consumption, however, is one of this Lexus’ main objectives. Expect 31 miles per gallon in the city and 28 mpg on highway drives. In mixed use, the RX 450h should return 30 mpg, however, in the real world I only average around 25.1, a disappointing score. It’s typically a breeze to meet or even exceed advertised fuel-economy scores in Toyota hybrids, which makes this performance (or lack thereof) a bit of a surprise.

The Lexus RX is something of a mixed bag.

With its upscale interior, refined manners and, yes, unfortunate infotainment tech, a base 2021 Lexus RX 450h starts at just shy of $49,000, including $1,025 in destination fees. That’s about $2,650 more than an entry-level, front-wheel-drive, non-hybrid RX 350. As it sits, this F Sport example checks out for $59,380, a figure goosed by a few add-ons like a $200 wireless charger, $640 heated and ventilated front seats, $1,365 for parking assist and a 360-degree camera system, plus a few additional goodies. Still, that outlay gets you a family-friendly vehicle that’s more docile and refined than the sportier Acura MDX and, thanks to its aggressive styling (which you may or may not love), more visually interesting than a Lincoln Nautilus or Mercedes-Benz GLC.

There’s an abundance of luxury crossovers available today, great examples from German, American and Asian automakers. Plenty of them offer upscale interiors and loads of fancy features, but few are as refined, fuel efficient — and in one particular way — frustrating as this mostly likable Lexus.

When desktop visitors are filling out forms on your website, long forms won’t be an issue, because they’re using larger screens and can navigate smoothly. But with tablets and smartphones, this won’t be the case.

For instance, if you have a form on your webpage asking visitors to subscribe to a newsletter, you don’t need lines on the form asking for their phone numbers and street address.

5. Add a Search Bar

Remember the bit about menu optimization?

This relates to it.

If the desktop version of your website has a menu with many options, it may seem difficult to make it concise enough to fit into a single page on mobile devices. But it can be done, by including a search bar to the mobile version of your site.

Motivating users to search for their queries eliminates the need for you to depend on a complex menu. When you give visitors too many options, it could negatively affect your conversions because you’ll end up confusing them.

Take, for example, retail giant Amazon, they offer users more than 12 million products but don’t use complex menus because it’ll be impossible to display all those products on a single screen, so they use a search bar.

For desktop visitors, browsing through your website can easily be done by controlling the cursor with a keypad or mouse but for users on smartphone devices, navigating with their thumbs it isn’t as easy.

Screen size is something you must keep in mind when placing different elements for your mobile page. Icons need to be big enough, so visitors can tap them with their thumbs. Also, ensure you leave enough space between each icon or button so people don’t accidentally tap the wrong one.

9. Use Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP)

  Accelerated Mobile Pages (AMP) was created by a collaborative effort of Google and other major brands to boost user experience for mobile users. These are still HTML/javascript pages but they load fast for mobile users, which is why Google encourages website owners to implement them.

AMP is a method for developing mobile-friendly versions of your website’s pages. It involves stripping down the site’s content and eliminating irrelevant media files and elaborate layouts. When users access your site with a mobile device these AMP versions will be served to them.

Is it compulsory that you make AMP?

There’s no definite answer because on one side it’ll help you attract new visitors and give your mobile visitors a great experience, but on the other, you’ll need to have two versions of your site.

10. Don’t use Large Blocks of Text

While you’ll need to use words to effectively pass your message across to your visitors, try to keep them as concise as possible. Large text blocks can easily overwhelm the reader, and remember that if a paragraph is 4 lines long on your site’s desktop version, it could be 8 or 9 lines long a phone.

Focus on user comprehension and the ultimate goal of the page when creating your text to ensure users don’t have to stare at large chunks of text.

When Uber Chief Executive Officer Travis Kalanick takes an Uber, he prefers a black car, the high-end service his company introduced in 2010. On this particular night in early February—Super Bowl Sunday—Kalanick is perched in the middle seat, flanked by two female friends. Maroon 5’s “Don’t Wanna Know” plays, and Kalanick shimmies. He clutches his smartphone as the three make awkward conversation. The two women ask when his birthday is, and marvel that he’s a Leo. One of his companions appears to say, somewhat inaudibly, that she’s heard that Uber is having a hard year. Kalanick retorts, “I make sure every year is a hard year.” He continues, “That’s kind of how I roll. I make sure every year is a hard year. If it’s easy I’m not pushing hard enough.”

There’s no question that it’s been a hard year for Kalanick and Uber—or really, a bad year compressed down into an awful three months. And it keeps getting worse. That pleasant conversation between Kalanick and his friends in the back of an Uber Black? It devolved into a heated argument over Uber’s fares between the CEO and his driver, Fawzi Kamel, who then turned over a dashboard recording of the conversation to Bloomberg. Kamel, 37, has been driving for Uber since 2011 and wants to draw attention to the plight of Uber drivers. The video shows off Kalanick's pugnacious personality and short temper, which may cause some investors to question whether he has the disposition to lead a $69 billion company with a footprint that spans the globe.

In an email to staff Tuesday after publication of this story, Kalanick apologized to Kamel for treating him disrespectfully. “To say that I am ashamed is an extreme understatement,” Kalanick wrote. “My job as your leader is to lead…and that starts with behaving in a way that makes us all proud. That is not what I did, and it cannot be explained away. It’s clear this video is a reflection of me—and the criticism we’ve received is a stark reminder that I must fundamentally change as a leader and grow up. This is the first time I’ve been willing to admit that I need leadership help and I intend to get it.”

In December, Uber pulled its self-driving cars off the road in San Francisco after the California Department of Motor Vehicles said they were operating illegally without an autonomous vehicle license. In January, more than 200,000 people uninstalled their accounts, and #DeleteUber trended on Twitter, after the company was accused of undermining a New York taxi union strike protesting President Donald Trump’s refugee ban. On Feb. 2, Kalanick reluctantly left his spot on Trump’s business advisory council to appease the company’s liberal-leaning employees and users—not to mention its many immigrant drivers. On Feb. 19, a former software engineer at Uber wrote a blog post alleging that she had been propositioned for sex by her manager and that when she’d taken the issue to human resources, an HR rep had said that he wouldn’t be punished, in part, because he was a “high performer.” On Feb. 23, Alphabet’s autonomous car company Waymo sued Uber and its self-driving car company Otto, accusing an Uber employee of stealing trade secrets by downloading 14,000 files onto an external hard drive. On Monday, Uber’s head of engineering resigned after the company said it learned that he had faced a sexual harassment complaint at Alphabet, his former employer. He denied the allegations.

“Some people don't like to take responsibility for their own shit.”

The company has responded to the former engineer’s allegations by hiring the former U.S. attorney general Eric Holder to investigate the female software engineer’s claims. “What’s described here is abhorrent & against everything we believe in. Anyone who behaves this way or thinks this is OK will be fired,” Kalanick wrote on Twitter. On Waymo’s claims that Uber has stolen trade secrets, an Uber spokeswoman said, “We have reviewed Waymo’s claims and determined them to be a baseless attempt to slow down a competitor, and we look forward to vigorously defending against them in court.”

Despite it all, Uber’s business is growing, week after week. This is the service that Kalanick and his friend, Garrett Camp, dreamed up. Get a car in an instant, just like James Bond. They weren’t the first people to have that idea, but they were the ones who won—or at least the ones who have gotten the furthest. Camp stepped back and became chairman of the board, while Kalanick turned Uber into a global endeavor that operates in more than 400 cities. The company, which has its headquarters on Market Street in San Francisco, has more than 11,000 corporate employees. It has many more drivers—millions of them, scattered all over the world, working as independent contractors, without the health care and other benefits typically provided to full-time employees.

And the gig has gotten harder for longtime drivers. In 2012, Uber Black cost riders $4.90 per mile or $1.25 per minute in San Francisco, according to an old version of Uber's website. Today,  Uber charges $3.75 per mile and $0.65 per minute. Black car drivers get paid less and their business faces far more competition from other Uber services.

“That’s kind of how I roll. I make sure every year is a hard year. If it’s easy I’m not pushing hard enough.”

Kalanick has a reputation for being ferociously competitive and hard-charging. He’s the guy who has bragged about having earned the second-highest rank on Nintendo’s Wii tennis game. He’s still dogged by the fact that he once referred to Uber as “Boob-er” because it improved his dating prospects. Current and former employees say he can be empathetic when the mood strikes—or tyrannical when it doesn’t. Kalanick loves fighting over a good idea, which sometimes means admitting that his isn’t the best one. “Toe-stepping” is one of Uber’s cultural values.

Kalanick is trying to be a better listener. He met with more than 100 of Uber’s female employees at a meeting last week meant to address the morale crisis that followed the former software engineer’s blog post. Kalanick sounded some of the right notes, standing in front of the crowd. “There are people in this room who have experienced things that are incredibly unjust,” he said, according to a recording obtained by Buzzfeed. “I empathize with you, but I can never fully understand, and I get that. I want to root out the injustice. I want to get at the people who are making this place a bad place, and you have my commitment to make that happen, and I know it doesn't end there.”

Like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg before him, Kalanick is trying to learn how to empathize and communicate. But Kalanick at 40, compared with 32-year-old Zuckerberg, is having to change his ways later in life, and he’s often reluctant to tread too far from his intuitions. Even when Kalanick tries to empathize in his own way—which often means jumping into a dialectical argument of sorts— his temper can occasionally flare.

In Kamel's car, for example, Kalanick is seemingly at ease as the ride ends and his friends hop out of the car.

“You have a good one,” says the driver.

Kalanick says with an air of familiarity, “Good to see you man.”

Kamel replies, “Good to see you, too.”

Kalanick thinks the ride is over. But having the CEO in his car is an opportunity Kamel has been waiting for.

“I don’t know if you remember me, but it’s fine,” Kamel says. The pair begin talking shop, and Kalanick explains that they’re going to cut down on the number of black cars, which will reduce competition and should be good for Kamel.

Then Kamel says what every driver has been dying to tell Kalanick: “You’re raising the standards, and you’re dropping the prices.”

Kalanick: “We’re not dropping the prices on black.”

Kamel: “But in general the whole price is—”

Kalanick: “We have to; we have competitors; otherwise, we’d go out of business.”

Kamel: “Competitors? Man, you had the business model in your hands. You could have the prices you want, but you choose to buy everybody a ride.”

Kalanick: “No, no no. You misunderstand me. We started high-end. We didn’t go low-end because we wanted to. We went low-end because we had to because we’d be out of business.”

Kamel: “What? Lyft? It’s a piece of cake right there.”

Kalanick: “It seems like a piece of cake because I’ve beaten them. But if I didn’t do the things I did, we would have been beaten, I promise.”

The two bat that idea around, and Kamel brings the conversation back to his losses.

Kamel: “But people are not trusting you anymore. … I lost $97,000 because of you. I'm bankrupt because of you. Yes, yes, yes. You keep changing every day. You keep changing every day.”

Kalanick: “Hold on a second, what have I changed about Black? What have I changed?”

Kamel: “You changed the whole business. You dropped the prices.”

Kalanick: “On black?”

Kamel: “Yes, you did.”

Kalanick begins to lose his temper. “Bullshit,” he says.

Kamel: “We started with $20.”

Kalanick: “Bullshit.”

Kamel: “We started with $20. How much is the mile now, $2.75?”

Kalanick: “You know what?”

Kamel: “What?”

Kalanick: “Some people don't like to take responsibility for their own shit. They blame everything in their life on somebody else. Good luck!”

Kamel: “Good luck to you, but I know [you're not] going to go far.”

The door slams. Kamel drives away. Later, the Uber driver app prompts him to rate Kalanick, as he does all his riders. Kamel gives him one star.

How to Use Autoptimize Plugin to Increase Your Website Speed

Why Is Your Website Slow?

Your server is so poor that it takes much time to wait.

Your website has a lot of traffic, which causes congestion.

Your code is too “big” and has a lot of unused characters like JS, CSS files that you need to remove.

And there are many other reasons that make the speed of your website so low. To have better performance, you need to find the way out. Using a plugin is one of the solutions. There are many plugins that help you optimize your website speed and Autoptimize is one of the kind.Autoptimize

Getting Started

Apparently, you have to install and activate the plugin. The free version of Autoptimize is available on WordPress.org. You just need to search for it in the Dashboard and install, activate it normally.

Configure the Autoptimize Plugin to Speed Up Your Website

After Autoptimize is ready to use, you need to configure it. Stay in the Dashboard, go to Plugin and you will see the activated Autoptimize plugin here. Click Settings.

Here is the latest UI of Autoptimize Settings board:

The manipulation is just simple. You just need to put a tick to some of the boxes here. But it’s not just easy like that as you should know which to tick and which not.

JS, CSS and HTML Settings

JavaScript Options Settings

Stay in the JavaScript options, enable the Optimize JavaScript code. After you put a tick on this box, other options in the Java Script Option section will show up like this.

By enabling Optimize JavaScript code, you actually enable the minification of JavaScrip assets to make your website faster. That’s the most important thing to do in this part.

And look at the Aggregate JS-files, it’s also automatically enabled right after you check the Optimize JavaScript code box. This action is highly recommended. This is because when you only minify the JavaScrip assets, they will not be united by default so you will have to select Aggregate JS file for them to be all aggregated and minified.

The Also aggregate inline JS when being enabled will increase your cache size despite giving faster page loading. So, make sure that you frequently clear your cache memory as too much cache is not good for your website. I don’t recommend that option.

Force JavaScript in <head> isn’t recommended, either. It may stop the page from rendering to fix the JS-error, which slows down your loading time.

Exclude scripts from Autoptimize: enter the scripts that you don’t want to aggregate. This will help you normally fix something that wouldn’t work during the optimization.

Add try-catch wrapping: If any files are breaking during the optimization process, you can enable it to troubleshoot. It’s optional for you.

CSS Options Settings

Now scroll down and move to the CSS Options. There are the options you should tick:

The Optimize CSS Code, Aggregate CSS-files, Also aggregate inline CSS and Exclude CSS from Autoptimize are similar to JS options above. You should also enable Also aggregate inline CSS only when you are aware that your cache is growing and delete it.

Inline all CSS shouldn’t be enabled if your website has a lot of traffic because it may slow down the speed. You should only use it to have a better score in PageSpeed Insights when the number of visitors is small. However, as you can’t control the website traffic and it’s obvious that every website owner wants to increase the traffic, I don’t recommend this section.

Inline and Defer CSS: It’s related to code so the author suggests you should check the FAQs page to have further information.

It’s optional to choose Generate data: URIs for images depending on your images’ size. If the images’ sizes are large, Autoptimize will skip them to avoid any problem while rendering.

HTML Options and CDN Options Setting

Enable Optimize HTML Code, the whitespace and some comments of the HTML code of your website will be deleted. This action will compress the line of code to some extent to speed up your website. If you want to keep the comments, put a tick at Keep HTML comments.

It’s optional to enter your CDN (Content Delivery Network) root URL in the CDN Base URL tab. If you have a full CDN set up through any service, you can put the URL they give you here. If you use Cloudflare, you don’t need this action.

Misc Options

Under the CDN Options is the Misc Options here.

Save aggregated script/CSS as static files: You should check this option. For some reason, you only uncheck it if your server has some error about compression and expiry.

Minify excluded CSS and JS files: If you exclude any files from the JS and CSS Options above, uncheck it will mean that you no longer minify the files. It’s optional.

Also optimize for logged-in editors/ administrators: As the author states, you can choose it or not depending on your website. But if you’re using a page builder plugin, leave this unchecked to avoid some of the plugin’s functionalities from stopping working.

After you’ve done with the JS, CSS, and HTML Settings, click Save Changes or Save Changes and Empty Cache. I prefer Save Changes and Empty Cache to remove Cache at the same time.

Image Optimization

If you want to have your image optimized for better performance, move to the Image tab.

Optimize Images: Your image will be compressed by Shortpixel to make your website more lightweight.

Image Optimization Quality: Choose one of the three compressions. This is how they explain each kind so that you can choose one that suits your website.

Load WebP in supported browsers and Lazy-load images are optional to choose. Lazy load images can make your loading time faster, but the image display may be annoying to your visitor.

Finally, click Save Change.

Extra Options

If you want more detailed and extra options, go to the Extra tab and choose some of the boxes here according to your preference. The explanation for each section is quite understandable so you just need to read it carefully. Some of the sections are marked specially for advanced users so if you are a beginner, just ignore them. Don’t forget to click Save Change.

That’s all! After I completed optimizing, my website speed is now much faster than before.

Optimize more

Critical CSS

Render-blocking CSS files will cause slow performance. To correct this, the author also recommends Autoptimize Critical CSS Power-Up plugin to resolve this problem. Click the button to install it. This is a special technique to display the basic CSS first and then load the other unimportant CSS later, making a sense that your website is loading faster.
