Rather than stay at home to be ignored you opted to go out for the afternoon, browsing shops for a special occasion. No, not yourself. See, as luck would have it, June 23rd also held significance to Dwayne. Marko, one of the younger members of the coven, had told you two weeks prior it would be Dwayne’s birthday as well. You had to keep your own secret. Not at their request, but your own. Overshadowing his birthday would be dreadful, you hated the idea of taking it from him. Besides, no one remembered anyways.

Weaving through brightly lit shops, you pondered each piece wondering what would suit him best. Clothes were out, maybe a new skateboard? Just looking at the little white tags stuck to the back of them made you cringe. Okay, so that was out. You weren’t made of money.

There was an old mystic shop selling a handful of oddities, somewhere called Madame Medusa’s Mystical Boutique. A few interesting necklaces caught your eye, but one seemed to be directly calling you. It was a crow skull attached to a leather cord, bordered by two carved red beads on either side. Two thick black feathers were wedged between the beads. Gently you slipped it off the hook, running your thumb over the chilled, smooth surface.

“It’s a lovely item, isn’t it,” an elderly woman asked. Truthfully she startled you from behind the counter, almost making you jump a few good inches.

“O-Oh, I’m sorry, I didn’t see-”

“Don’t worry dear, hardly anyone does,” she chuckled, tenderly plucking the skull from your hand. “Shall I wrap this up for you?”

“Oh- Well I wasn’t, I mean it’s nice but-,” you stuttered, but already she was shuffling towards the counter again. Boy pushy woman. You didn’t even know how much it cost, you weren’t exactly on a budget but you couldn’t be going on any big spending sprees.

“Hush now. He’s going to be waiting for you, somewhere nearby. I can guarantee that this is the one you’re meant to give him,” she insisted, wrapping the necklace under aged brown paper.

“Yeah, I’m sure he’d like it but-,” you couldn’t help but trail off. How- How did she know?

The woman pushed the little baggie your way, giving a tender smile before she began to hobble towards a curtained room behind the counter.

“W-Wait, I didn’t even pay for it!”

She waved off your concern, looking behind her shoulder while she parted the curtains in her path.

“Consider it a present from those who neglected you. Take it to him, you’ll see..” And with that she vanished behind them, leaving you stunned where you stood. Silently you glanced down at the small plastic bag, almost jumping in place when a dusty old grandfather clock began to ring through the store. One, two, three, four, five, six. Oh! It was already six o’clock. Crap the boys would be up any minute!

It didn’t take too long to spot the gang of vampires sitting on the worn, wooden banisters talking amongst themselves. Dwayne was just as eager to spot you, sweeping between the boys and lifting you up in his arms. “Happy birthday, princess,” He gushed, planting tender kisses all over your cheeks.

“How did you know? I didn’t-”

“My bad,” Marko spoke up. He leaned back from behind Paul to wave your way, as if he were waving a flag of defeat. Damn. You weren’t even sure how Marko figured out your birthday in the first place, there was just no keeping secrets from that guy!

Dwayne set you down, although he carried a much more concerned expression this time. “Why keep it a secret in the first place, Y/N?”

You fiddled with the bag still clutched in your hand with eyes cast downward towards your feet hoping a good excuse could get you out of just admitting you’d rather play backseat. But, you didn’t. Not that you couldn’t come up with any excuses. Rather, you didn’t want to be sidelined even for your boyfriend’s birthday. It was yours too, and for the past several years it seemed like you were constantly being set aside so that other things could happen. Your sister’s wedding, that trip to Colorado your parents took, grandma and grandpa visiting, your brother’s soccer games- everything seemed to take precedence over the celebration of the day you were born. And worst of all is you never got your Sixteen Candles happy ending. No one would really recognize they screwed up. You wouldn’t be apologized to with tearful shock when your parents realized they forgot your birthday, your friends- if you could even call them that at this point- wouldn’t try to cheer you up, and there was no handsome crush ready with a birthday cake to make it all go away. It’s like Dwayne already knew your feelings because before you could get a word in he pulled you into a crushing hug. Your head pressed against his chest. Sometimes you forgot he had no heartbeat and instead only listened to him rumble when he spoke to you.

“Just because today is for me, doesn’t mean it isn’t for you too, princess.”

Those words hit you harder than you anticipated. Your throat felt as if it were swelling, dry with each labored swallow, and a tight pressure squeezed the bridge of your nose. Inevitable tears eagerly rushed down your while burnt cheeks.

Dwayne only held you in place. He never let go until you were the one ready to release him, wiping away those pesky droplets of emotion staining you. “Now, I was saving this for when we took you to the hotel…,” he began with his hand jammed into his jacket pocket, rustling around for whatever it was he needed. “But, I figure maybe you need it now.”

A thick banded ring of aged silver sat in his calloused palm, an oval cut of turquoise clasped in place by a weaving border. Veins of black and copper split through chunks of blue-green paths. Rather hold it out to you, Dwayne tenderly took your hand into his own to slip the hefty piece over your ring finger. It nestled perfectly in place and you couldn’t help but let out a breathless laugh, slinging your arms over his neck. He already knew what to expect. Iron arms engulfed your waist and lifted you up. His stubble scratched the edges of your mouth when you crashed your lips into his. The sensation was overwhelming. It wasn’t just that he got you this, it was what he had gotten you.

Dwayne had often told you myths and lore on lazy nights when the hunting grew slow and the hours were long. Once you found yourself admiring a very similar cut of jewelry decadently adorned with many fine cuts of turquoise, finding your curiosity piqued when asking him what the significance was to all these pieces. Why was it such a commonly used stone in so much jewelry, especially with Native American tribes.

“From what I can remember,” Dwayne thought back at the time, leaning over you to admire the pricey baubles kept protected under a thick sheet of glass “, my grandmother told me that every tribe has always valued it. I mean, they all have their reasons. It’s a powerful gem that carries protection, life and strength. I’ve even seen it change colors depending on where you find it. I hardly ever saw it though when I was alive, even back then it cost a fortune.”

But now, through one way or another he’d remembered how you admired them from afar, yearning to have a ring like that of your very own. The one to five hundred dollar price tags always scared you off whenever you’d come to find them in stores- at least, the real ones. For once you didn’t care how Dwayne had acquired your gift. Gift! Oh!

“Oh, hold on,” You interjected between kisses with the little bag presented before him. “I um, got you something too. From that crazy lady in the mystic items shop!”

A warmth spread through your chest watching him lay the necklace over, the skull placing perfectly atop his many others. It suited him perfectly.

The whole night was just perfect. You spent the entire time going on rides with the boys after they spoiled you for dinner, later dragging you to the hotel where you realized what Dwayne meant earlier. There were streams of colored paper hanging off the rafters and old piping, red balloons tied to the furniture, and a banner of paper reading out “Happy Birthday Dwayne and Y/N” written in big, red marker letters. You couldn’t even make a wish when they brought out a cake for the both of you. After all, what more could be asked? They had already given you the most perfect birthday you could have ever hoped for.

AVERY CHOPRA’S APPEARANCE

STYLE

Avery’s style would be something considered bohemian and comfortable that’s all put-together. She wears a lot of bold colours (typically rainbow and jewel tones with a gold accent; basically Jasmine’s colour scheme in Aladdin) and patterns. Being tall, she typically doesn’t wear shoes with a heel any higher than four inches; She use to have to wear ridiculously high heels back when she was a stripper, so she’s grown a distaste to wearing shoes any higher than four inches. Being of Indian descent, Avery sometimes incorporates Desi fashion into her everyday wear occasionally. She’s very proud of her heritage and loves being able to show her pride. When it comes to important meetings, she tones down slightly by wearing pantsuits. Well, slightly. She loves wearing pantsuits that still reflect her style, such as the blue pantsuit Naomi wore during the Aladdin premiere tour (just, with different shoes) or maybe even something like the lavender suit Tyler Posey wore for the Now Apocalypse premiere (I am obsessed with this suit and it would look perfect on Avery lmao). The days where she stays home though, she typically would be wearing a pair of yoga pants and a comfy shirt (and she may or may not sometimes steal one of her spouse’s shirts or hoodies to feel closer to them and to be able to smell their scent, oops) along with some socks. She never wears her shoes in the household, it is law. Slippers are on thin ice but she typically goes barefoot or socks, especially when it’s super cold outside. She’s all about remaining comfortable, especially when she’s at home.

HAIR

Avery has soft black hair that are in ringlets that would be considered 2B hair, it’s very thick and reaches to the small of her back. She typically wears it down completely or has it in a half-up/half-down hairdo. She typically only puts it up in a pony or a bun when she’s working or attempting to cook or is working out. She doesn’t really do much with her hair, just lets her natural curls be, but she does use hot tools occasionally for special occasions or if she needs to look presentable. She use to have to use hot tools a lot when she was a performer, so she’s trying to regrow her hair and get rid of the damage that was done. She’s never once dyed her hair, but she has cut it once before. She hates having short hair and promises herself never again. She is currently using Fable & Mane’s Ritual Collection for her hair, along with OGX’s Moroccan Argan Oil and Camel Glow’s Hair Serum. If she were to be styling her hair, then she uses OGX’s Moroccan Argan Oil hairspray and Mielle Organics Mongongo Oil Thermal & Heat Protectant Spray.

MAKE-UP

A lot like her hair, Avery keeps her make-up look very simple. A light BB cream, some mascara and kohl eyeliner, light gold eyeshadow, and a glossy lip is her typical go-to whenever she decides to wear make-up; Otherwise, she typically goes most days without wearing makeup. If she were to experiment with make-up looks, then she’ll save that for a special occasion.

SCENT

Avery loves the brand Bath & Body Works. Her favourite collection from them right now is Sunset Glow, which scent consists of coconut, cherry, moonflower, and caramelized vanilla. As for her hair, ashwagandha, dashmool, tiger herb, coconut, and argan oil is what it typically smells like.

TATTOOS & PIERCINGS

Avery has three-ish tattoos: Mars’s initials (MWS) in Max’s handwriting on her right wrist; Kaleidoscope on the back of her neck in the book cover’s font; and a peacock tattoo that’s being placed on her left hip and thigh. She’s currently working with Cole on it and it’s not finished yet; The outline has been done but the additional details and colouring is still being worked on. She has the typical ear piercings and also a helix piercing on her left side. Avery also has a belly button piercing; It nearly closed during her pregnancy with Mars, but she pierced it again a short while after her pregnancy and had recovered from it.

HER WEDDING RING

Kagami had asked Marinette and her parents to come to the airport to greet them on their return. The intention was a dinner at the Tsurugi home, with Marinette spending the night afterward.

Really, she hoped to have a late gift exchange. The hitch was that Kagami’s gift to Marinette… was an engagement ring. In truth, she wished to propose to her upon their reunion at the airport.

She had agonized for weeks over design possibilities, quite aware Marinette’s skill in that area and anxious of failure. She had carefully selected the engagement ring and wedding band, custom ordering it from a Japanese jeweler, Mokumeganeya, and choosing the same style for herself with different accompanying stones.

The diamond cut was special, the Sakura cut, symbolizing the cherry blossom—her desire to spend the rest of their beautiful, fleeting lives together. Her own engagement ring had rubies on either side of the diamond. Marinette’s had pink tourmaline. The wedding bands were tsunagaru-katachi, one connected wide ring cut from the same billet of Mokumegane to be pulled apart at the ceremony, each with three stones: tourmaline on one side, ruby on the other, with the purity of a diamond in between to represent the pure bliss of their union.

The union she hoped Marinette wished to share with her.

The designer she had met with had been confused by the order of two tsunagaru-katachi, one for engagement and one for wedding bands, as normally the engagement ring and both wedding bands were made from the base sheet. Same-sex marriages were new in Japan and restricted to certain areas, but the Tsurugi name carried enough weight for the request to be accepted without judgment.

The engagement rings were still connected by a tiny bit of metal, and should Marinette say yes, they would have a sharing ceremony over a celebratory dinner.

Kagami couldn’t stop herself from checking her bag, in front of her on the floor of the aircraft, for the velvet box again, for what had to be the umpteenth time.

“Kagami, fidgeting is unlike you,” her mother commented in Japanese. “What troubles you? Surely not doubts?”

“I only hope Mari-tō shares my desire to be united in marriage, Mother.” She realized abruptly that made her sound doubtful. “I have no doubt she does, but even with such certainty, I cannot help but be nervous.”

“Ah, I believe that is anxiety, which your chosen mate has much experience with according to her mother,” Tomoe responded.

“I believe hers is quite a bit more severe than what I am experiencing at present, but this experience gives me a new appreciation of her fortitude.”

Her mother placed a hand on her shoulder in a rare show of affection. “Then I have no doubt you will also conquer it and grow as a result. In the meantime, I suggest meditation.”

The rest of the flight passed quickly as her meditation faded into sleep; Kagami woke as they were landing, and immediately understood what people meant regarding butterflies in one’s stomach.

Her mother always travelled first class, so there was no wait to disembark. With other members of their retinue tasked with retrieving luggage and preparing to document her proposal, following a brief check by customs, there was nothing to delay meeting Marinette.

Kagami ducked into a restroom to smooth her clothing in a mirror, having chosen a simple andon-bakama, black with embroidered cranes and sunflowers—symbols of hope—with a red kosode for this occasion. A full kimono would have been uncomfortable on the long plane ride, but she wanted a level of formality for this occasion.

Tomoe waited patiently, not interrupting her as she checked herself in the mirror, likely recognizing this as more anxiety. But she had indicated her expectation that Kagami conquer it, so with a deep breath she left the restroom to continue on to meet Marinette.

Marinette was waiting beyond security with her parents, and she looked radiant. She was dressed in a pale pink qipao with gold embroidery, her pigtails higher on her head, in gentle buns that cascaded.

Kagami thought she might melt at the sight of her.

She met Marinette’s smile with what she hoped was an acceptable one of her own, striding forward at the beat of her own heart before dropping to one knee, pulling the velvet box from her bag, and opening it. She was vaguely aware of the flash of cameras.

“Marinette… Mari-tō… I have been blessed every day by your presence in my life. Will you marry me?”

Kagami could see tears shining in Marinette’s eyes. Instead of an answer, Marinette presented her with a wrapped box.

“My answer is in here,” she said softly.

The box was shaking slightly in her grasp, and Kagami took it, closing the ring box and placing it back in her bag to unwrap.

Inside was a qipao, crimson with gold and silver embroidery. Down the bust was a resplendent dragon. In its claw it held a lotus.

Looking up, she realized Marinette wore its yin, a lustrous phoenix with its own lotus in a talon. She recognized the symbolism of two lotus blooms—shared heart and harmony, hé for union. There were other flowers as well, gently ornamented around the phoenix, mirrored around the dragon. Lilies, orchids, peonies, daffodils, roses, and tulips, and a winding pattern of gentle twined vines.

Marinette had prepared her ‘yes’ in advance, in such a Marinette way.

“Kagami?” She realized abruptly that her mother couldn’t see the symbolism.

“Marinette has gifted me a qipao, embroidered with a golden dragon holding a lotus. She is wearing one with a phoenix holding its own lotus.”

A soft intake of breath meant her mother also knew the symbolism; unsurprising, given she had taught it to Kagami.

Marinette’s smile widened. “Ma sirène, I can think of no greater joy than spending the rest of my life with you.”

Kagami was hardly aware of getting to her feet, only of pulling Marinette into her arms, finding her lips in a public display of affection she would normally not indulge in but felt right in this moment. She was lost in her, their warmth and closeness, in the smell of yeast and cinnamon sugar that seemed ingrained in her hair.

Slowly she was aware of applause, and she broke from Marinette to find that the airport had stilled around them, their engagement having gained attention.

Marinette’s cheeks were red, and she was certain hers were as well if the heat in her face was any indication.

The attention was, thankfully, short-lived, with well-wishers expressing congratulations. Kagami was mostly aware of Marinette at her side as they were led to the waiting limo for the ride home.

It was another kiss from Marinette that pulled her more into awareness, when they entered the home.

“I wish to wear the qipao to dinner,” Kagami told her. “You hand-embroidered it yourself, didn’t you? It’s stunning.”

Marinette blushed happily at the compliment.

“Might I feel the stitching first, Marinette?” Tomoe asked politely. “I am only able to see with my hands.”

“Of course, Tsurugi-san!” Marinette gently took the garment from Kagami to present to her mother.

She tutted. “Please, simply Tomoe is fine. You are to become family. Following the wedding, you may feel free to call me kaasan or haha, whichever you feel comfortable with.”

Kagami thought Marinette might spontaneously combust at the offer, but she stood still as Tomoe’s hand ran over the proffered qipao, finding the shape of the embroidery with ease.

“This is splendid work,” she said softly. “You must have been working on this for some time.”

Marinette giggled softly. “Actually, I started it when I received the package with the kimono.”

Tomoe’s fingers went still at that, and then gently grasped Marinette’s right hand, pulling it out from under the fabric and feeling at the fingers. Kagami could see they were red, calloused, and her heart ached at the sight.

“Have more care with these, Marinette,” Tomoe said finally. “They work magic, and should be treated well.”

She asked one of the servants to bring a salve for Marinette’s fingers to Kagami’s room, and then invited Sabine and Tom to sit with her for pre-dinner tea, effectively dismissing the two of them until dinner.

When they were safely in Kagami’s room, she took Marinette’s hands, kissing each fingertip with reverence. When the salve arrived, she dabbed it on gently, rubbing it in with a tender touch.

They did not have time for relaxation, with dinner on the horizon, so Kagami changed into the qipao, which fit splendidly, falling just above her ankles and hugging her body in a way that gave her a figure. The slits up the sides were something she was unused to, but they did not go high enough to cause her discomfort or embarrassment. The higher collar gave the garment a modest appearance.

Marinette straightened and smoothed the fabric, making sure nothing was creased. She had only just finished when dinner was announced.

The meal was one of Kagami’s favorites, sukiyaki with a lovely variety of vegetable side dishes. It was everything one could want on a cold winter evening.

Afterward, Kagami placed the velvet box on the table.

“The rings are tsunagaru-katachi, cut from one block,” she said, opening the box and pulling out the rings to show they were joined by a tiny bit of remaining uncut metal. “In this sharing ceremony, we will together split them into two rings, to symbolize our eternal bond.”

She heard a sniffle and realized Tom was tearing up, and paused, uncertain how to react.

Sabine just smiled. “He’s a bit of a sucker for romance. Please go on, dear.”

Kagami turned back to Marinette. “Mari-tō, I chose the Sakura-cut diamond, as the cut has more facets, making the diamond as brilliant as you. Cherry blossoms represent the fleeting beauty of life, and I wish to spend the rest of mine with you.”

Marinette’s eyes were wet, and Kagami knew she was just as much a romantic as Tom was. She wasn’t sure whether she wanted to make her cry, though it would certainly show her she had hit her mark.

“The pink tourmaline is a representation of your love and compassion, and the way you work to protect and heal those around you,” she continued. “And the ruby represents the passion you have inspired in me, the zest for life you have instilled in me since we met.”

There went the tears; she had absolutely hit the mark.

“Mari-tō, will you share this ring with me?”

Marinette reached forward, letting Kagami guide her hand as they gently pulled the rings apart, gently bending and breaking the bit of metal that kept them together. Then Kagami took Marinette’s left hand, sliding the perfectly-fitting ring onto her ring finger. Marinette did the same.

Together, they let Sabine take pictures, and eventually Marinette pulled out her phone to take a selfie of them and their rings, quickly posting it to her Instagram with the caption, “Kagami asked for my hand in marriage, and I accepted. We just had our sharing ceremony with the lovely tsunagaru-katachi she designed.”

Kagami pulled out her own phone to like and share with her own followers. “I get to share my life with the most wonderful woman in Paris.”

By the time they were done, the table had been set for dessert and tea. The centerpiece was a Bûche de Noël brought by Marinette’s parents, and next to it was a red celebration suama. They were surrounded by wagashi, yuzu castella, manjū and mizu yōkan. Several pots containing different varieties of tea were also on the table.

It was a night of celebration. A night that let Kagami hear her mother’s rare laughter as Tom used puns and Sabine regaled Tomoe with silly stories of Marinette growing up. A night that showed they would be, altogether, a lovely family, both sides together. A night that allowed her to feed Marinette her favorite Japanese sweets, and be fed by her in turn.

They ignored the soft mobile notifications of text messages from friends to focus on each other.

The tea was replaced by watered down sparkling sake to celebrate an auspicious night, and as she snuggled with the best friend who had become her beloved, Kagami found herself more content than she had ever been.

All The Days Ahead, Chapter 9: I Want You For Worse Or For Better

Mal x Simon, Firefly. Book POV. Also on AO3. Ch 1-8 on my blog.

“Friends and family,” Book says, as though he’s beginning a wedding before a much larger group than the nine of them. “We are gathered here today to witness the joining of Malcolm Reynolds and Simon Tam in a union of love--a true and equal match of hearts, souls, and minds.”

The wedding manages to begin exactly when they planned for it, a miracle all by itself. Mal’s recovery, though not without its setbacks, is behind them. Their last job left no one injured, they haven’t come upon the Alliance or Reavers in days, and thanks to Kaylee and Inara, the arrangements are complete.

Now Kaylee stands to the Shepherd’s right, with Zoe and Wash, and Inara stands to Book’s left, with River and Jayne. They all watch as Mal and Simon walk toward them from the other end of the deck, connected by the blue o juju they’re each holding onto at one end.

Once they reach the others, the two men let go of the set of twenty-one beads, giving them to Book. Mal takes his place next to Kaylee, and Simon moves to the space between Inara and the preacher.

Cued by his words, Zoe and Inara hold out candles. Mal lights the red one in Zoe’s hands, and Simon lights the gold.

“Before us all, they vow to respect and to honor each other, to be faithful and true,” Book continues. “They'll exchange further sentiments now.”

He waits, watching Mal place his hand on top of Simon’s with palms touching. Then Book wraps a yellow ribbon around their joined hands, binding them together.

“Ain’t never been much for words,” Mal says, his eyes locked on Simon’s. “Some of the best advice I ever got was to speak true, or say nothing at all. Much of the time, it means I get quiet. But in this case, I can speak nothing but true, and say that I love you in a way I never expected to love another person, and I would do near about anything to keep you safe and make you happy. Despite the particulars, I’m real glad you chose my ship to be a fugitive on.”

There’s a murmur of laughter around them at Mal’s final words. Simon is still smiling a little when he speaks.

“I’m not always good at...finding the right words. So I thought a lot about what I wanted to say today, how I could best express my, my happiness and my appreciation for everything you’ve brought to my life since we met. I decided that for once, perhaps I should speak your language, and keep it simple. I love you with all my heart. Every morning that we wake up together is better because I’m with you. I don't know whether it was luck or a kind of fate that brought us together, on your ship...but I'm very grateful that we're here. All I want is to live, work, and fight beside you for the rest of our days.”

Book unwinds the ribbon from their hands, pausing while River holds out a small box. “These two have freely chosen to be tied in life, 'til death someday parts them. With this exchange of rings, they tell every world in every galaxy, as well as the skies themselves, how strong and deep their devotion is, and will remain.”

Simon slips on Mal’s wedding ring first, a shining black band made of polished stone. Mal returns the gesture, watching the way tiny emeralds in Simon’s ring catch the light.

“I now pronounce you husband and husband,” Book tells them. “I believe Wash has the saké.”

Wash hands Mal the small cup of rice wine, and he takes a sip from it before passing it to Simon. Once they’ve both drunk from it, Wash takes it back.

That final formality accomplished, Book grins at them. “It seems to me, now would be the proper time for your first kiss as married men.”

While they kiss, long and enthusiastic, the others burst into sound. Kaylee is crying a little, River is clapping, and Jayne whistles and stomps his feet like they’re at a festival instead of a wedding.

With the ceremony ended, Book follows the others toward the party food, appreciating the way Serenity has been specially decorated for the wedding.

The incense Inara has lit around the open space, along with Kaylee’s scattered arrangements of flowers, gives the ship a joyful atmosphere. It truly feels like a mix of both Mal and Simon’s backgrounds, beauty meeting earthiness. The men may not have invited God to their union, but Book can feel Him in the very air that surrounds them.

Everyone talks as they gather food, strands of conversation overlapping until Book can only catch snatches.

“Do you think it’s too much?” asks Kaylee in a worried tone, but he doesn’t hear Inara’s reply.

“I’m serious! They use gophers!” Wash says to Mal, and Book is a mite glad not to know the context of that one, to be honest.

“Any occasion to wear a dress...” Zoe is telling Simon, and Book turns to River, done selecting his food.

“What an amazing array this is, I must say. It smells delightful.”

With Inara’s help sourcing the ingredients, Kaylee and Wash have prepared a feast fit for a crew with hearty appetites. Despite his opinion on the morality of her work, even Book has to admit that they all benefit from Inara’s esteemed contacts across the ‘verse. Especially once he tastes the herb-root soup. It used to be his favorite at the Abbey.

“Dig in, everybody,” Mal declares as they sit down with their bowls and plates along the table that has been moved downstairs for the party. “No better way to mark an occasion, I reckon, than with good food, and good friends.”

“Hear, hear,” Book agrees. “And might I just say, there’s no better occasion than a true meeting of hearts like yours. May you fly free together for years to come.”

Mal nods in acknowledgement of the blessing, and Simon smiles.

Looking around the table, Book lifts his cup in a toast. “To Mal and Simon, our very own newlyweds.”

“To Mal and Simon!”

The others drink, and River pouts a little after sipping from her cup. Simon stopped her when she tried to pour the same tonic as everyone else, with a firm, “Not today, mei-mei.”

Book has overheard her arguing with Simon about the artificial construct of age a lot lately, but luckily for everyone, the doctor is used to the way his sister can be both a stubborn child and a skillful logician at the same time.

Given her usual state of behavior, the shepherd can only imagine what young River might be like inebriated. It’s a rather concerning picture.

Luckily, the girl’s mood shifts as soon as Kaylee puts on music. She pulls Simon away from Mal long enough to dance with her--and then afterwards, somehow convinces Mal to do the same.

Book settles in to enjoy the party, pleased that once they’re reunited, the happy couple seem to be enjoying themselves.

Along with everyone else, he thinks, amused as Wash and Zoe dance by him. Their band of misfits has become a family, and he suspects Inara was right in telling him this is where he belongs.

This is where they all belong. And tonight they get to celebrate that, together.

Memories, Chapter 5: His Greatest Creations

Summary: Vision finds some very special letters.

After that, their nighttime routine sometimes changed a little. Not every night, they weren't suddenly insatiable sex fiends.. But often enough. Wanda and Vision did, after all, have time to make up for.

This particular morning, Vision woke to the pleasant, soft warmth of Wanda's bare skin as she lay curled sleeping against his chest, her arms curled tightly around him. Vision shifted slightly so he could look at her properly. A small smile adorned Wanda's face as she slept. She looked so relaxed, more perfectly at peace than he had ever seen her.

And, Vision thought, why shouldn't she sleep peacefully? She didn't have to run anymore. Didn't have to hide. They had a space to call their own. Anyone could look around their room now, see it filling with Wanda's things, and Vision's, and know immediately that it was their room. They were safe now. Secure. They were Home.

Vision was home, because he was with Wanda. He looked at her again, and his synthetic heart swelled, a warm feeling spreading through his chest. He loved her so much it almost hurt. She was his home, he belonged with her, now and forever. Forever. Vision knew he wanted to be with Wanda forever, and he knew their was something specific that he had to do to make that happen.

Now, he just needed to remember what exactly that something was. Vision was feeling quite stupid, because he knew it was something obvious. He knew it was something he should know, something he should remember, but he simply didn't, yet.

At that moment, Vision was distracted again from whatever it was he'd been trying to remember by Wanda beginning to stir, eyes fluttering open, a sleepy smile spreading across her face.

"Mmm.. Morning, Vizh."

"Good morning, Wanda" Vision replied, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "How did you sleep?"

"Destul de bine. I think someone might have worn me out a bit."

"Oops.."

"I didn't say it was a bad thing" Wanda shifted, stretching, causing some of the covers to fall away. Visiion's cheeks turned a darker shade of red as he quickly tried to gather them up again. Wanda chuckled. "I don't mind if you see me, Vizh. You have special, uh, Boyfriend privileges."

Her brow had crinkled a little as she spoke, because truthfully, the words 'Boyfriend' and 'Girlfriend' had never felt quite special enough for what they were to each other, but then, what other word was there to use?

"I know" said Vision. "I see you, and you are beautiful. But I also love and respect you far too much to just shamelessly ogle any time you happen to be naked in front of me."

"Well.." Wanda blushed slightly, propping herself up on on one elbow to kiss him. "Thank you, Vision. I feel very loved and respected."

"Good.." Just as Vision leaned up to return Wanda's kiss, there was a knock at the door.

"Vision?" came Morgan Stark's sweet little voice. "Big Brother, are you awake?"

"Just a minute, don't open the door!" Vision and Wanda both sprang out of bed, searching for anything resembling appropriate clothing. Vision could, of course, instantly phase himself into something, but he had somewhat got into the habit of usually wearing Tony's old pants, even if they were a little short on him.

"Why?" They could almost see the crinkle in Morgan's adorable brow.

"Uh.. A monster stole my pants!" Vision replied, and Wanda burst out laughing as she slipped into her gown.

"A monster?!"

"Don't worry, your brother fed the monster and it went away" Wanda smirked, throwing Vision's pants at him and waiting for him to get them on before opening the door. "Now, what can we do for you, fata dulce?"

"Can we make Mommy a special Breakfast?" Morgan asked.

"Yes" Vision smiled fondly at her. "Of course we can." --

Morgan, quite a sweet natured child, often liked to do nice things for her Mother, and her reasons for doing so were often just as sweet as she was. So, when Vision had a meal of eggs, mushrooms, and grilled tomatoes almost ready to serve, Wanda asked Morgan what the occasion was for Today's special breakfast.

"Oh, Mommy is a little bit sad Today" Morgan explained.

"Why is that? Wanda frowned.

"Today was 'sposed to be her and Daddy's 'versary."

"Oh.." Wanda's face fell. "You mean their Wedding Anniversary?"

"Uh-huh."

Halfway through dishing food onto a plate, Vision froze. Partly due to a sudden pang of sympathy for Pepper, but also because of one particular word. One word, and all the words surrounding it.

Wedding. Marriage. Proposal. Husband and Wife. And a ring.. --

Vision remembered standing in a jewelry store in New York, one of the very few occasions that he had worn his human disguise.

He had made a few visits, before he had finally chosen a ring. Simple, but beautiful. Just like Wanda would want.

"Good luck, sir.." The clerk had wished him as he left, ring-box in hand.

"Thank you.." --

He remembered taking the ring back to the compound and tucking it away in his suitcase.

The suitcase now stowed in the bottom of his cupboard.

"Well," Vision managed to speak, dishing up the remainder of the food, "I hope this Breakfast helps your Mommy feel a bit better. Maybe you and Wanda can take it to her? I just have to go check something.."

Wanda opened her mouth to question him, but Vision was already gone. --

Vision bolted to his room, throwing the closet open and dragging out his suitcase, dropping to his knees to search it's contents.

Soon, he found it. A ring-box, containing the ring he had chosen for Wanda. Strangely, though, attached to the box with a rubber band, was an envelope. It looked rather fat, and was taped shut, as if it had been sealed and reopened again. Vision removed the envelope, carefully opening it. He pulled out letters, in Tony Stark's handwriting. Letters to him. Feeling a lump in his throat, Vision began to read. --

Dear Vision,

As much as I've tried, I just can't seem to wake you up. And believe me, I have tried. I've tried everything I can think of, so has Bruce, we even called Helen Cho.. We just can't wake you up without that damn stone.

I found this ring in your stuff.. You were going to give it to Maximoff, I suppose. I'm sorry you never got the chance. I can't help thinking things would be different, for you, better, if she were still here. That she could wake you up. I almost one hundred percent sure she could, and that sucks, 'cause I can't help blaming myself for her being gone, for you, for everyone.. Wondering if things could have been different if I was here, instead of up there..

But I'm trying not to dwell. This letter is my way of trying to let go, I suppose. To say goodbye, to you. It's harder than I thought, because I don't think I ever realized how much you actually meant to me until I saw you broken.

I'm sorry I couldn't save you. I should probably bury you or something, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Just know that you're safe here. I'll protect you, like I couldn't then.

Goodbye, Robo-son. Rest In Peace. --

Vision's eyes were stinging a little, though he hadn't shed any tears, yet. He wiped them anyway moved on to the next letter. --

Dear Vision,

So, it turns out there might be a way to bring everyone back. If it all works out, you might get a chance to give this ring to Maximoff after all. That's why I put this letter with it, because I know you'll come looking for this thing.

So, hopefully I'll see you soon. But this mission is big, it's dangerous, there's a whole lot that could go wrong. If this plan works, but I don't make it, if you wake up and I'm not here.. There's some things I need you to do for me, Vision.

There's a little girl.. my little girl, Morgan. She already loves you. Calls you her big brother. I'm going to need you to look after her for me. And Peter, and Harley.. you remember both of them, right? I hope so. They'll both need a bit of support.

I know how great you turned out has very little to do with me. You were your own great man from the moment you sprang out of that cradle. But whatever little part of you did come from me, (probably just the Jarvis part), I want you to know I'm proud of you. And Morgan, and whatever tiny little parts of Peter or Harley that I can lay claim to.. I am so proud.

Tell them that, if I don't get the chance. I don't mean to get soppy here, but If I go, I know I'm leaving behind the best of me. My greatest creations are you.

Hope I see you soon. --

Tears spilled from Vision's eyes, really, truly feeling Tony's loss for the first time. And then he remembered.. A memory that wasn't entirely his, not anymore, but still very much a part of him. --

"Hello, sir. I am Just A Rather Very Intelligent System. You may call me J.A.R.V.I.S."

"Shit!" Tony exclaimed joyfully. "It worked! You work!"

"Shit.. That word is not in my speech bank. Shall I add.."

"Fuck!" cried Tony. "I mean, shit.. crap.. No!"

"No, sir?"

"Don't say shit, or fuck, or crap.. Miss Potts will be pissed if she finds out I created an artificial intelligence and thinks the first thing I did was teach it to swear.. She'll do that disappointed little sigh that's actually kinda sexy.."

"Miss Potts is sexy?"

"Ye.. NO!" --

Suddenly, Vision was laughing through his tears. He heard footsteps approaching, and stuffed the ring back into the suitcase. Soon, but not yet.

Wanda entered, finding Vision laughing and crying at the same time. She glanced at the letters in his hand for just long enough to recognize Tony Stark's handwriting. Without any questions, or any words at all, she knelt by Vision's side and just held him, because that was what she felt he needed her to do.

Vision curled into her arms. Safe. Home. He laughed, and he cried. He was sad, for the loss of his friend.. of his Father. But Vision was also happy. So very happy. Because Vision remembered. The very important thing he'd been trying to remember since he first woke up. He remembered exactly what he wanted, what he'd planned to do before everything went wrong. What he still planned to do now.

Vision was going to ask Wanda Maximoff to marry him.
