I rewrite Sky High
okay so, disclaimer: sky high was actually pretty damn good for it’s time and a lot of the plot twists/tropes used in it were still just starting out and not as commonplace as they are today. so 10/10 really good movie.
Also as i was writing this, it turned into half analysis of what’s already in the movie and half things I would change about the movie so,,, yeah. enjoy!
***
So the point about Sky High is that and the way the school and hero society as a whole works, is that you, as the audience, are supposed to look at it and know that it’s a flawed system. We’re supposed to see it as an injustice that kids are sorted into hero or sidekick- Sorry, I mean ‘Hero Support,’ on your first day of school based on something you can’t even control.
(This movie was my hero academia-ing it up before it was cool.)
Anyway, the movie calls a lot of attention to it in the beginning, but then doesn't actually give it the resolution it deserves in the end. Which, not cool guys.
The Hero/Sidekick debacle is, on the whole, a very thinly veiled metaphor for the problems minorities face. Specifically, those of the alphabet mafia, or LGBTQ, as we’re more commonly known.
There are a lot of examples for this so I’ll speed through the big ones real quick:
Will’s nerves regarding not having attraction to girls superpowers?
The way he tries to fake having an attraction to girls superpowers to get approval from his dad?
Being literally outed in front of his whole class (by someone named Boomer no less) and then immediately trying to hide it from his parents as long as possible?
The constant references to being a ‘late bloomer’. Doesn’t it remind you of the common phrases: ‘it’s just a phase’ or ‘don’t worry. You’ll start liking [opposite gender] eventually.’ ?
The scene in the kitchen, right after Will introduces the Sidekick Squad (and yes, that is what I’ll be referring to them as for the rest of this essay tumblr post). Will is so obviously trying to gauge how his dad is going to take his friends being sidekicks and also him being a sidekick. I just, this is so blatantly a coming out scene? How does anybody not see it as that?
(also the dad talking so offhandedly about bigotry and the hatred his own father had for sidekicks??? Who else has been there?)
Will telling his dad that he doesn’t care, that he’s proud of being gay to be a sidekick is just,,, *chef’s kiss*
With all of this backing behind Will and him growing into not being ashamed of his lack of powers, My first change would be that Will does not, in fact receive his father’s super strength. It’s just such a cop out! The movie had all this amazing build up, and this brilliant metaphor it could have used and, instead, they threw it all away.
The sudden acquisition of powers and immediate acceptance by his peers, feels too close to someone being ‘fixed’. That Will wasn’t good enough the way he was and had to be better, had to be his father in order to be good enough.
So, no. Will remains powerless.
Instead of the revelation of ‘he’s strong’, we get to let the Sidekick Squad shine.
Lash and Speed still cause a fight between Warren and Will, but when Will is under the table, the sidekicks actually do something.
Will knocks the table over (not, like, lifting Warren up but something closer to pushing him off. I mean, even I could push upwards from underneath a table fast enough that if someone is standing on it, they’d lose their balance and fall to the ground) and that starts things.
The Sidekick Squad all grab forgotten lunch trays or cartons of milk or something and throw it at Warren. It isn’t long then that the whole scene devolves into a food fight (Zach, at least, does not have good aim and probably hits a bystander accidentally, drawing more people in, until the whole cafeteria is involved.) The fight turns into something more playful, but still with that bit of an undertone of trying to actually hurt each other.
Ethan melts at one point and (accidentally) causes Warren to slip and land on his back, Magenta probably punches someone (not Warren) and Zach is just mouthing off to anybody who gets close enough. Near the end, right before Principal Powers shows up, Layla finally gets the right idea and just fire extinguishes the shit out of Warren.
(Side note here: I am very much also nixing the Layla crushes on Will plotline. I love best friends to lovers just as much as the next person but… no. Let kids see boy/girl friendships!
Instead, I will be inserting a Layla/Warren love story and you can consider this the first scene on the road for that.)
Anyway, the whole Sidekick Squad plus Warren ends up in the detention room and all of them are covered in food. Right after Principal Powers leaves, the Sidekick Squad is immediately talking excitedly to each other about how cool they just were and what they did. Basically it’s very wholesome and they’re all hyping each other up and then one of them, Layla or Will, excitedly turns to Warren and goes, ‘and that thing you did with the fireballs? God! I don’t think Lash is going to have any eyebrows for a month’ and the tension between them all but drops.
Warren, of course, tries to push them away and not get involved with their ridiculousness, but the Sidekick Squad is stubborn and by the end of detention, everyone but Warren is in agreement that he’s a part of the Squad now. They will not leave him alone. They also start hanging out at the Paper Lantern all the time just to annoy/make fun of him in that loving way friends do.
(I just want Warren to be a part of the Squad guys. Will calls him his best friend at the end but what did the movie actually do to show they were friends? Nothing, that’s what. I want that fixed.)
So the cafeteria fight boosts the whole Squad’s reputation, right? People think those sidekicks are pretty cool, and they get their fifteen minutes of fame. Only… Will gets a little hooked on the feeling of being popular. He doesn’t want to be a capital-h Hero or anything! But, well… he’d be lying if he didn’t like people thinking he was cool.
The others don’t really care all that much about being cool, but Will does. He hates that he does but what is he supposed to do? He can’t change how he feels. So he starts trying to make himself more popular and sometimes tries dragging his friends into stupid schemes.
And then enter stage right, one Gwen Grayson.
I prefer Gwen being Royal Pain’s daughter, actually. A girl who would’ve had no stock in this fight but her mother, who is sickly and weak and survives mostly because her daughter takes care of her, practically brainwashes Gwen to do her bidding.
Gwen is a minion here, and also, perhaps, a victim.
At first, she follows her mom’s orders and charms Will into dating her. She also feeds into his desire to gain popularity but can’t, in this world, break him from his friends. Actually, Will brings Gwen along to the Sidekick Squad hangouts and, slowly, she becomes a part of the group too.
She starts to doubt her mother. Starts to care for Will and the Squad.
She throws the party, and the Squad is all invited (trying to break them up isn’t conducive to the Plan her mother has anyway and wouldn’t work besides) but she lures Will away to make out and… other things, and he brings her to the Sanctum for privacy just like before. She still steals the pacifier (or whatever death ray equivalent you want idk) but she and Will don’t break up at the end of the night.
It’s not actually until two days later, right before the dance is going to start, does Gwen decide she can’t stand back and let this happen anymore. She spills the whole plot and her betrayal to Will when he comes to pick her up for the dance. She’s crying and apologizing and basically expecting to be hated forever by the only people she thinks ever actually liked her.
And, well. Will is furious at her for lying but there’s more important things to deal with at the moment. They’ll talk more about this and he’ll be angry, but that’s all going to be later. Right now they have a school to save so he grabs her hand and starts running to warn the rest of their friends.
Things happen mostly as canon from that point with minor changes.
It’s Warren who pulls Layla into a kiss before they all split off into groups, telling her to kick ass and stay safe before sprinting off after Speed. There have been scenes throughout the movie where the two are very obviously getting closer and are into each other. And then, before the dance, while Gwen and Will we’re technically going as a couple, the whole Squad was going as a group.
When Warren and Layla saw each other all dolled up, it’s very cliché. Warren says she looks nice and Layla visibly gulps at his outfit of a button down and suit pants, sleeves rolled up to his elbows (because homeboy does not wear a full tux you can fight me on this).
And also, Will doesn’t fight Royal Pain by himself. Instead, Gwen is there with him and they don’t fight with super strength. Gwen’s been helping Will build an arsenal of gadgets a la Batman and the two face off against her mom together, Gwen with her powers, and Will acting as half support and half as a watered-down Batman who still needs some more training before he’s totally polished.
The school falls from the sky, but Gwen buys them time by keeping the anti gravs working through sheer force of will, while Will holds off her mom from attacking her while she’s vulnerable and concentrating. Magenta eventually kills the EMP or whatever it was, and the day is saved.
Gwen passes out, cause ~drama~ but she ends up okay so don’t worry. She’s just exhausted.
The sidekicks get their recognition and then immediately bounce because dances suck and they all agree that they should go to the Paper Lantern instead to celebrate cause they’re tired, alright? Saving the day is hard.
So it’s all of them, a little battered and bruised and exhausted, crowded into this corner booth and laughing and being kids. The camera does it’s fade to comic book page thing, and the narration is something more along the lines of:
“Royal Pain and her cronies got locked away. Gwen and I talked things out, and she’s getting help for all the stuff her mom did to her. We’re taking things slow in the meantime.
The school is undergoing a lot of changes to the curriculum and getting rid of the whole ‘hero/sidekick’ divisions. (Mostly at the urging of my parents… and Layla). Next year is going to look a lot different, I think.
But it’ll be a good different, just like we are. None of us were what we were expected to be, and, I think, we’re going to keep defying expectations. There’s a whole world out there that needs changing.
And I can’t think of a better group of friends to do it with.”
THE END
(just give me found family saves the day by being themselves rather than somebody else, give me them saving the day because they care about each other, give me them fighting for what’s right and fixing things. please i am b e g g i n g.)

Additional nitpicks that are small but Very Important to Me
Coach Boomer is still called coach Boomer because there is no way I am missing out on the ‘okay, boomer’ jokes
Layla stays like Layla, but i’d like for the movie to stop trying to make her seem annoying for her beliefs or like she’s wrong to be so vocal about them. Her caring about things that are wrong ends up as the butt of too many jokes and i… do not like that.
Why so many dad/son scenes? Why this janky imbalance parenting dynamic between the Strongholds. Knock that shit off. I want happy functional family thank you very much
Mr Boy and the mad scientist are very obviously in a relationship
Wait, actually: mr boy, mad scientist and Boomer are al in a poly relationship and are ridiculous about it
I’d like to see more of the sidekick classes going over like, ‘the boring’ parts of the job, and teaching the kids how to deal with the aftermath of the heroes heroics, just to hammer in the fact that the system is fucked up and that it’s messed up that the heroes get all the recognition while the sidekicks are left to clean up the mess
Use actual 14 year old actors? These kids look like seniors.
Or, if you want more ‘mature’ characters make it so sky high is like,,, a finishing school or smth. Something kids 16 and over go to.
(What the fuck kind of parent thinks that their freshman child dating a senior is a good idea?? An almost adult coming onto a fourteen year old??? Are you trying to make Will’s parents (particularly the dad) seem like irresponsible assholes??)
Gwen is, at most, a year above Will in this rewrite, kay?

“Feeling better?” You ask, bringing Peter a bowl of soup. He has just woken up from a four-hour nap. You set the soup down on the nightstand and press the back of your hand to his forehead. “Fever’s gone, so that’s a start.”
Peter stares at nothing, deep in thought, barely recognizing you are there. He feels more distant now than he did in the depths of his fever. You smile sadly at him and leave the room to retrieve your soup. When you come back, he is eating his.
“Thank you for the soup. It’s delicious.”
“Of course, doll. You seemed a little lost in your thoughts for a while there.”
“I was thinking about her,” Peter responds, answering your unasked question.
“Tell me about her. About Gwen.” You say, taking a sip of your soup.
“She was-” And he pauses because it’s hard to talk about someone you loved so deeply in the past tense,“Courageous. She helped me complete the serum that cured Dr. Connors, even though it put her in danger.” He finishes the soup you gave him and places the dish on the nightstand.
“That was very brave of her.”
“And she was so smart. She interned then worked at Oscorp, and she was going to go to Oxford for college.”
You nod in encouragement.
“She was so many things- kind, funny, frustrating- and now she’s none of those things. She’s dead. And I tried for years to move on, you know? For years I would go out on a few dates and just end up flaking or breaking it off before things got serious because I couldn’t. I couldn’t let myself go through all of that again just too- just too-” Peter’s rambling about her trails off, and he is staring at nothing again, alone in his thoughts.
“Peter? What are you thinking about?” You set your soup aside.
“I’m thinking about the night she died,” His voice is frail, and he can’t look you in the eye.
“Can you tell me about that night?” You ask, grabbing his left hand in yours, looking at him from the side.
“We were in a clock tower. And I was fighting Green Goblin. My foot got stuck in one of the gears. Gwen was being held up by one of my webs. And then the webs snapped and the gears collapsed,” He begins, staring blankly at your wall, “I dove after her but I wasn’t going to make it in time- so I caught her with a web- but it was too late. Her head-” He takes a deep breath, “Her head slammed against the floor. She died instantly- but I didn’t know until I got down to her level. It was. I replay it in my head all the time.”
“I’m so sorry Peter.” You place a kiss on the back of his palm.
“I don’t think about her all the time- not in the way I used to. It comes and goes- but it still feels so raw- and then I start calculating in my head if there was even a possibility I could have saved her. And I don’t like the answer because-”
“There was nothing you could have done” You know Peter- and there is nothing more painful for him than realizing there was nothing he could have done. Because if he could’ve done something, he would’ve used that knowledge to save someone else. But those circumstances- what happened that night- there was no saving Gwen Stacy. And there never was.
“There was nothing I could have done” He repeats, tears streaming down his face.
You climb into the bed, snuggling up against him as he cries.
“You know” He sniffles, “I never told anyone else about her.”
“Really? She’s had such an impact on your life.”
“It doesn’t make for great first date banter, ‘yeah my previous girlfriend died and I’m still processing her death” Peter states
“I mean- well- yeah.” There really isn’t any way of getting around that.
“I didn’t tell you this at the time, but the day we met I was having a really hard time. And had you not been there, it would’ve been an even worse time. I had given up on trying to see the world through anything other than the glass half empty. But you changed that” Peter holds your left hand in his right.
“I did? I don’t recall being a ray of sunshine that day” You state, thinking back. You lay your head on his shoulder.
“You weren’t- You were an irritated, untrusting New Yorker with a kind heart. But I think I needed that.”
“I hope you realize you’ve described most people in New York City and not just me,” You state, looking up at him.
He chuckles, “Yeah, well- I guess I’m just trying to say- you’re the first person I’ve gotten close enough to since she died to even talk about it.”
You don’t say anything- just sit in silence, absorbing the impact.
“Peter that’s-” You pause, “I’m glad we found each other. And I’m sorry that you felt like there was no one you could talk to about it all this time. I’m here for you.” You remove your head from his shoulder and kiss him on the forehead.
You will bring up therapy at another point when he’s a little less vulnerable.
You're facing each other now, noses almost touching.
“Are you going to finish your soup?” He asks.
“Yes.”
“Are you sure?” He asks, reaching for the bowl you had left on the counter without moving his face away.
You say nothing, but swat at his arms.
“I guess that’s a no.”
“It’s a no. Why don’t we make another bowl together?” You suggest.
“Fine,” He replies, stealing a kiss before getting out of bed.
You smile to yourself and follow him out of the bedroom.
It does not take long to make soup- especially the kind you microwave for 2 minutes, let stand for 1 minute and then serve alongside a grilled cheese. Somehow, it takes the two of you an hour to make another bowl of soup. When you first entered the kitchen, you turned on the music and had a bit of a dance party for about a half-hour- before one of you remembered why you were in the kitchen. (It was you, of course). As you took the bowl of soup out of your cupboard, a fairly important question came to mind.
“Peter- you told me you got dragged around by a train last night- how are you fine right now?”
“The short story is I have a healing factor that increases the speed at which I regenerate tissue.”
“Uh-huh. And the long story is?” You ask, tearing the protective seal off the soup before screwing the lid back on.
“Well-” He begins.
Twenty minutes later, you gathered maybe 50% of what he said, but the other part was either too scientific to understand or required the knowledge of a medical doctor specializing in tissue regeneration.
“Does that make sense?” He asks.
“Kind of? No matter the science, it’s pretty cool.” You reply, finally putting the soup in the microwave. “Have you ever thought about donating your blood?”
“The last time I did that someone turned into a Lizard”
You are so shocked that you accidentally slam the microwave door shut. “Your blood- Your blood turned Dr. Connors into the Lizard?”
“Technically it was my blood mixed with lizard DNA but- yes” He begins to fidget with his hands.
“Did you know he was going to turn himself into a Lizard?” You set the microwave to two minutes and hit enter.
“No- He hadn’t even done human trials yet,” Peter replies.
“So he did a human trial on himself, turned into a lizard, and said, ‘This is the destiny of human evolution?” You ask.
“He wasn’t himself. You wouldn’t be yourself if that happened to you.”
“Yeah, Peter. I’d be a lizard.”
“But you’d be the prettiest of Lizards” He replies, coming over to you and booping you on the nose.
“Any other blood-related circumstances that I should know about?” You ask, jokingly.
“Well,” Peter says, turning away from you.
“Wait- there is? Are you serious?”
“No, I’m just kidding.” It will be a few more months before he tells you about the situation with Harry Osborn, current CEO of Oscorp.
The microwave beeps three times, indicating that the soup is ready. Peter waits another minute before pulling it out of the microwave, giving it a stir, and taking a large slurp.
“Good soup” He states
You nod.
“Before I forget- I called you out sick for the day, so you don’t have to worry about making up the hours at work.”
“Really?” He asks between spoonfuls of soup, “Did Jameson say anything?”
“He said you never take sick days, so this must have been serious. And to just email him the latest Spiderman pictures when you’re feeling a bit better." You don’t feel the need to tell Peter that you had to convince Jameson that he was actually dating someone, or that he was so sick he couldn’t stand.
“Oh. That was nicer than I was expecting.” Peter responds, having completely inhaled the soup. “I should still probably get going, though.”
You glance at the clock on the microwave- it reads 2:00pm. “You can stay a little longer if you need- my class doesn’t start until 5:00pm,” You take the empty soup bowl out of his hands
“I would love to but I did leave some experiments running before I went out last night, so I need to make sure my apartment didn’t explode while I was gone.” He responds, resting his hand against your cheek.
You turn away to put the bowl in the sink.
“Your suit is hanging up in my bathroom. Hopefully, it’s not too wet.” He nods and goes to retrieve it from the bathroom. When he comes back, it’s obvious the suit is still too damp to wear.
“Don’t worry about it. It’ll be dry by the time I need it. And besides, I really only need to wear the mask when I’m swinging around.”
“You're- you're going to swing the whole way home? At 2pm on a Tuesday?”
“Not the whole way home. Just most of it.”
You sigh, “Alright. Stay safe, Peter. And try not to get dragged by a train again.” You give him a tight, long hug.
“That’s the plan,” He replies.
As he sits at the edge of your window sill, ready to jump out, he pauses and quickly says, “I love you, y/n,” before launching himself out the window.
You close the window behind him and watch as he swings away, “I love you, Peter."

Love Bites
Love sucks. That's pretty much common knowledge. Combine that with addiction, money, fame, and childhood trauma and you've got a recipe for disaster.
Chapter 1
Chapter 2
Chapter 4
Chapter 3
.
.
.
.
.
In terms of nationwide success, Guns N' Roses is a band that's virtually non-existent. I mean, considering that they're an unsigned band without a debut album, that isn't surprising. Looking at them and listening to their amazing music, I would say they take a lot of inspiration from Hanoi Rocks, The Rolling Stones, New York Dolls, and to a lesser degree, The Sex Pistols, particularly in their onstage behavior.
And just like all of those bands, they're extremely talented. This band might be the best band I've ever seen play the Whiskey or in LA in general.
They're really fucking good.
I take a second to look at all the members of the band. All of them are very attractive but the man clearly trying a little too hard to look like Johnny Thunders catches my eye. Everything about him screamed cool and mysterious and I instantaneously found myself wanting to do whatever I could to get to know him. My gaze lingers on him for a moment before I begin to survey the crowd. I feel somewhat out of place in this setting. It's mostly men and women trying way too hard to catch the attention of the band for...obvious reasons. No offense to them, I support women doing whatever they want as long as they aren't hurting anyone, but I can't picture myself ever being in that crowd.
Once their set finishes, I begin to wonder if I should wait for the redhead, Axl, to approach me at some point, or if I should just turn around and leave. I weigh my options and figure that I should stay. Not because of Axl, but because I don't really feel like going home and running the risk of walking in on Tiffany and her boyfriend. I don't really feel like going home at all now that I think about it, and if it wasn't earlier, now is definitely not the time to be walking the strip at night.
I sit at the table with my mind wandering, when Axl walks over to me with a massive grin on his face.
"Did you enjoy the show?" he sits down and waits for me to reply. Looking at him and how he carries himself, it's clear he's a man who has little insecurities, if any at all. I wonder for a moment if I should humble him just a tiny bit, but I decided not to.
"That was the greatest fucking thing I've ever seen." I return the smile, as his grows even wider, which I didn't think was possible.
He tells me to hold on for a second and disappears into the sea of people. When he reemerges, he isn't alone. He has a tall blonde man and another man with long curly black hair in tow, and I recognize them as the bassist and one of the guitarists respectively.
"This is Duff," Axl points at the blonde, who I've just discovered is named Duff.
"And this is Slash. Guys, this is Julianna."
I stand up and extend my hand for them to shake and and obviously intoxicated Slash pulls me into his arms for a hug instead. Although I was taken aback at first, I hug him back. At least he's friendly!
"We're having a bitchin' party at our place tonight, you should come." Duff leans over and whispers into my ear while I'm still in Slash's arms.
"I doubt you have anything better to do, no offense." Axl cuts in.
I want to object and tell him that I have plenty of better things to do than to go to some stupid party with people I don't know but 1. I literally have nothing else to do and 2. As cynical as I can be at times, I actually kind of like parties. I'm actually going to a party with strangers, just because they say I should. Ted Bundy would've just loved me.
"If you don't know our address, just follow the crowd." Slash half-shouts as he removes his arms from around my body and begins following his band mates.
-
The house is exactly what you'd expect the members of an aspiring rock band to live in. The house is a complete dump and it appears so structurally unsound that I find myself questioning how the place is still standing. The lawn is covered with cans and bottles that once contained alcohol, shattered glass, cigarettes, and an alarming amount of drug paraphernalia. Despite my better judgement after seeing all of these things, I asend the concrete stairs and open the door. Well, what was left of the door.
Upon opening the door, I am immediately greeted with the smell of alcohol, cigarettes, marijuana, and God knows what else. I also smell something burning and I pray to the Lord above that it isn't heroin, although that would explain the needles decorating the yard and the hardwood floor that adorned the interior of the house.
Before I know it, Slash grabs my arm and starts running up the stairs. This man is truly insane and I can see myself getting along well with him after tonight.
He brings me to a room with four other men in it and it doesn't take me longer than a second to recognize them as the other members of Guns N' Roses.
"That's Steven, he's our drummer. On his left is our rhythm guitarist Izzy. And you've already met Axl and Duff.
"Hi!" Steven exclaims excitedly. He's got a lot of energy, something most people expect from drummers.
Izzy looks up at me for a second with a blank expression, then looks away. I can't decide if it's because he's not impressed with what he's seen or if he's just shy.
"I need a drink." Duff wastes no time standing up and leaving the room to consume whatever alcohol the boys have in the house.
Axl leans over to Steven and whispers something in his ear. Whatever it was, it caused both of them to glance at me and chuckle slightly. Instead of asking any questions, I brush it off and sit on the chair that was once occupied by Duff as Axl, Steven, and Slash start talking amongst themselves. Izzy's eyes meet mine again, he looks at me for a little while longer than before, then he exits the room without saying a word.
The other guys seem to have forgotten I'm in the room, so I opted to leave too.
Walking down the stairs, I instantly recognize "Call Me" by Blondie blaring from somewhere down here and I resist the urge to embarrass myself by singing and/or dancing. A man approaches me and offers me a drink but I quickly decline. My mother wasn't good at being an actual parent, but she definitely told me to never accept a drink from a stranger.
Partying at a strangers house, surrounded by strangers, was never brought up in that conversation.
I've always had exceptionally good hearing and when I hear sirens wailing in the distance, I go into panic mode. I assume no one else hears it so I scream.
"COPS!"
The atmosphere changes as everyone from all directions beings running to whatever exit is closest. I'm grateful for my smaller stature as I can easily move around the crowd of people and exist though a window that isn't as populated and is harder to spot from most angles. I don't even look behind me after I leap out of the window and run like my life depends on it. I technically didn't do anything wrong, but as previously mentioned, I DON'T like the cops.
I ignore the burning sensation in my lungs while I haul ass all the way to my apartment, narrowly avoiding being hit by several cars on the way. I sprint the full mile to my apartment, unlock the door, and collapse onto the couch after locking the door behind me.
"Well, you did say you we're gonna try working out daily." Tiffany chuckles at my exhausted state. She goes into the kitchen and comes back with a glass of water, which I gratefully accept.
"I was worried about you, did you have a fun night?" Tiffany sits on the couch nexts to me when I sit up to drink.
"Mhm. I saw this really cool band play at the Whiskey, they invited me to a party at their house,"
Tiffany raises an eyebrow in amusement. She knows I'm not the type to go to just anyone's house. I pretend to ignore her and continue.
"someone called the cops, and I got the fuck out of there as fast as possible."
"For someone who's never broken a law in their entire life, you sure are scared of the cops." Tiffany says, while taking my empty glass.
"They've got guns and shit. You don't have to break any laws to get fucked up by a cop."
At the same time I stand up, Victor walks out of Tiffany's bedroom in nothing but his boxers.
We exchange awkward waves and he goes to meet Tiffany in the kitchen.
I like Victor. We got along really well when I first met him. He was a good guy and made Tiffany happy, that's all I cared about. Then when the whole situation with Gwendolyn happened, shit changed almost instantly. By this point, Gwen and I were friends so it made the situation difficult. I didn't want to just stop talking to Victor, but I didn't wamt to hurt Gwen. It's hard to be truly neutral when all three people involved are people you care for.
I decide to stop overthinking and go into the bathroom for a hot shower and some sleep.

Runeterra Retcons: Ruination Episode (Finale)
Finale 1/2
From the darkness, you emerge into a field of lowers. Dawn breaks over the horizon to illuminate crumbling ruins all around you: what looks to be the remnants of a once-great kingdom. The Black Mist, the screaming of the wraiths and the sounds of battle have all vanished. The scene before you is almost tranquil, but that tranquility is cut short when you notice the figures ahead of you.
Lucian: “AAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!”
Lucian lets loose a flurry of light from his Relic pistols, but Viego seems entirely unfazed as the light fails to pierce his armor. Vex stands behind him, and further back, you see the unconscious form of Senna hanging from a pillar by ethereal chains. At her feet are the now-lifeless fetters, laid out almost like an offering.
Viego: “Do you see now how futile it is, Sentinel? How powerless you are to save the one you love, just as I was?”
Lucian: “Damn it!”
You hear the Maiden of the Mist whispering to you once more, beckoning you to succumb to her influence.
Maiden: “Yes. It is meaningless to resist. Come. Let us be as one.”
Though her words are oddly enticing, they also spark a realization within you. Suddenly, Yorick’s words click in your mind as you rise to your feet.
“We haven’t lost yet, Lucian!”
“Don’t give up yet!”
All eyes turn toward you as you race up the hill, your fingers digging tightly into Yorick’s shroud of darkness.
Lucian: “Rookie!? What the hell are you doin’ here?”
Viego: “Another uninvited guest? Well, no matter. Welcome to Camavor, child. Soon, my queen and I will be reunited, and all will be as it should.”
“You’re wrong, Viego.”
“You missed a piece.”
Viego: “What?”
Vex: “Ugh, what’s this idiot talking about now? Honestly, I can just finish him off right here. Just give the word, boss.”
“You’ve gathered up Isolde’s light, but you completely ignored her darkness.”
“There was a fetter right under your nose all this time, but you couldn’t see it. No… You never wanted to!”
Viego response 1: “Ridiculous! My queen is perfect! Pure! She is the light of my world! There is not a shred of darkness in her!”
Viego response 2: “Impossible. You speak nonsense, child. The last remnant resides in her, the Sentinel! There… There is no other…”
“Isolde was just a person, Viego, and everyone has a little darkness inside of them!”
“You want your queen to be perfect, but even she can feel hatred and sorrow Let me show you!
You toss Yorick’s cloak into the air and the darkness forms into a ghastly figure: the Maiden of the Mist. Viego’s face contorts in horror as he watches the specter manifest, as though unable to believe what he’s seeing.
Viego: “It cannot be… But there is no doubt! I can feel her inside this… Creature! Isolde!?”
Maiden: “Ah, my king! Our king! You wrenched us from our slumber, now you would abandon us!? You said you wanted to be one… Then join us! Join us in eternity!”
The Maiden reaches out her hands as her, filling the air with her inhuman wails. A chord of darkness forms between her and Viego as the Maiden siphons his power away from him.
Viego: “No! Stop this! STOP IT!”
Vex: “What did you just do!?”
“Lucian, now your chance!”
“Lucian, get Senna!”
Lucian stares in disbelief at the scene before him a while long, but quickly shakes himself from his daze. As Viego struggles against the Maiden, Lucian makes for the pillar, blasting Senna free from her restraints. Senna falls to ground, but Lucian is quick to catch her.
Senna: “Ngh…”
Lucian: “Senna!”
Senna: “Lucian…?”
Lucian: “I’m here. I’ve got you.”
Senna rises to her feet, clutching her head. A look of visible confusion corsses her face as she scans the scene before her.
Senna: “What’s happening? Where are we? Is that… Viego?”
Viego continues to struggle against the Maiden’s pull, but to no avail. You see strands of light mingling with the darkness as the Maiden feasts, though a familiar shadow soon manifests behind her.
Vex: “Get off of him!”
Vex and her shadow sever the connection between Viego and the Maiden, causing both to cry out in pain. The Maiden soon reverts back into a cloak of darkness, falling unceremoniously onto the ground.
As the connection is severed, whisps of scatter all around you, darting about the ruins before finally embedding themselves into the fetters at Senna’s feet. One finds refuge within your Wayfinder, restoring the Relic’s light.
Viego: “No… NO! WHAT HAVE YOU DONE!?”
Senna: “Just what is happening here, Lucian?”
Lucian struggles to think of an explanation, but before he can, the doll at Senna’s feet suddenly floats into the air and springs to life. In a flash of light, Gwen is standing beside her commanding officers, her form fully restored.
Gwen: “Goodness! I think I just had a most awful dream… Oh, hello Lucian! Senna! Rookie! And…”
Gwen frowns when she sees Viego and Vex.
Gwen: “Ah, it seems now is not the time for happy reunions!”
“Welcome back, Gwen!”
“Welcome back, Senna!”
Viego turns his gaze toward you, his eyes full of malice.
Viego: “You! You will pay for this, child!
Viego screams with rage and charges you, leveling his sword straight for your heart. You reach for your Relicstone shard, though it quickly becomes apparent that you won’t be able to grasp it time.
Senna: “Rookie! Look out!”
Finale 2/2
Just as it seems Viego’s sword is about to run you through, a swirling barrier of violet energy surrounds you. The blade of the Ruined King glances harmlessly off and Viego staggers back in surprise. Shen and the other Sentinels all appear manifest you, as well as those you set free from Viego’s control. The Eye of Twilight falls to the ground, nearly breathless.
Shen: “It seems… We were not… Too late.”
Akshan: “Indeed! Now, what is happening?”
“We’ve got Viego on the ropes!”
“Viego’s weakened! Now, let’s finish him!”
Vayne: “I’m not sure what you did, kid, but it looks like we can finally put this monster down once and for all!”
Viego: “Ngh… How dare you!?”
Senna: “Sentinels! Let’s wrap this up!”
Taking charges of the group once more, Senna directs each Sentinel’s efforts toward bringing down the Ruined King. Though weakened, Viego still holds a great deal of power at his disposal, conjuring swaths of Black Mist to keep you and your allies at bay. Despite your greater numbers, you can feel the exhaustion of the last several hours earing down on your, and your allies are clearly nearing their limits as well.
Suddenly, the Relicstone shard in your pocket flies from your grasp. You turn to see Senna standing behind you, her cannon now broken up in several different pieces lingering in the air before her. Your piece soon joins them as a web of radiance and darkness spreads between.
Senna: “I’ve got you!”
Energy courses through you as a wave of power washes over the battlefield, surrounding you and your allies in shimmering barriers. Viego, on the other hand, is thrown back into the grass, his armor breaking apart from the impact. He seems almost pathetic as he scrambles to his feet, desperately seeking a way to turn the tides in his favor.
Viego. “This cannot be… Our reunion was nearly at hand!”
“Admit it, Viego! You never really loved her! She was never anything more than a prize to you!”
“She may have loved you once, Viego, but not anymore! Not after what you’ve become!”
Viego: “Damn you!”
Vex: “Viego! Come on!”
All eyes turn to see Vex standing before another shadowy portal. Upon realizing that she’s been spotted, the yordle leaps through, not even daring to look back.
Lucian: “Don’t let him get away!”
Viego creates a Harrowed path along the ground as he sprints across the field, appearing and disappearing so frequently that it’s impossible to get a clean shot it. Ultimately, the Ruined King flees through the Vex’s gateway just as it closes, leaving you and your allies alone in the silent ruins of Camavor.
“We’ve gotta go after him!”
“Where did they go!?”
Lillia (if option 1 is picked): “But… But where did he go? Back to those dreadful Isles, maybe?”
Gangplank (if option 2 is picked): “Back to the Shadow Isles I’d wager, the slippery bastard.”
Shen: “My apologies… I would follow, but…”
Jayce: “Hey, don’t push yourself. I’m still not sure how this spirit stuff works yet, but it clearly took a lot out of you to get us here.”
Senna: “Nothing for it. For now, let’s gather up the fetters and get back to headquarters, or what’s left of it. We’ll discuss out next move there. Rookie, that Wayfinder still intact?”
“The Wayfinder is back online!”
“Good to go!”
Gwen and the other Sentinels gather up the fetters, though you quickly note that Yorick’s shadow cloak has vanished. Deciding not to dwell on it, you raise the Wayfinder and let its light carry you back to headquarters.
The sun shines on the remnants of the Sentinel outpost. Not a trace of Black Mist is to be seen anywhere, and as you look to the world map, you see that the Harrowing has receded back to the Shadow Isles.
Tryndamere: “It seems that things are returning to normal. Speaking of…”
The Hallowed Mist begins to dissipate from those you freed from Viego’s control, returning them to their usual selves.
“I guess the Wayfinder’s power only lasts for so long.”
“I guess those snazzy new looks were only temporary.”
Draven: “Eh, this is more Draven’s style anyway. I don’t need any of that Mist stuff show how awesome I am!”
Riven: “As if the Mist really makes a difference with you…”
Gwen: “So then… It seems we’ve won? We stopped Viego, gathered all the fetters, and drove back the Black Mist!”
Senna: “Well… Viego’s still out there, but without the power of the fetters, he won’t be able to go beyond the boundary of the Shadow Isles. For the time-being, I’d call this a victory.”
A wave of relief washes over you as you collapse onto the ground, exhaustion finally taking its toll. After all that transpired last night, you find yourself too excited to even properly celebrate, but you still take comfort in knowing that you’ve stopped the end of the world.
“So… What happens now?”
“What’s everyone’s next move?”
Lucian: “Well, seems to me like our fight ain’t over quite yet, and I’m lookin’ at a whole bunch of new Sentinel recruits. Whaddya say we get you all sworn in and-”
Tryndamere: “I’ll pass. Much as I’d love to run that Ruined King through with my blade, I’m needed back home. I… Have a lot of explaining to do when I get back to my wife.”
Senna: “Speaking of… Lucian, you wanna explain where you were when our base came under attack, and where this Shuriman came from?”
Akshan: “Ah, so you’re Senna? Lucian… You are a lucky devil.”
Lucian: “Heh… Yeah, lucky enough to be married to the most beautiful woman in the world.”
Senna glares at Lucian, unfazed by his flattery.
Lucian: “Uh, anyway! What about the rest of you?”
Draven: “Pass. I mean, I can TOTALLY get wanting Draven on your team, but that’s not how I roll. Besides, I gotta get back the arena for my triumphant return.”
Shyvana: “I must also return and ensure that the king is unharmed, as well as my allies in the Dargonguard.”
Lillia: “U-Um… I’m flattered by the offer, but… I’d much rather not go back to that awful place! That was terrifying!”
Viktor: “Though these Relicstones and fetters warrant further analysis, my primary concerns must be rebuilding my lab and beginning developing countermeasures toward future mind-altering attempts.”
Atreus: “My battle lies elsewhere. I must tame these embers that Pantheon left inside me to ensure they never rage out of control again.”
Gangplank: “Not interested. I’ve still got a city to reclaim, and a grudge to settle. Speakin’ of… Graves! Don’t think I’ve forgotten about you!”
Graves: “Uh oh. Guess that’s my cue to hit the road! Honestly, this hero business don’t really suit me anyway. Seein’ as my partner’s still nowhere to be seen, there ain’t much reason to stick around.”
Diana: “I, too, must depart. The Lunari need me, even if the Aspect within me has yet to fully heal.”
Shen: “Likewise, I must return and ensure that my brothers and sisters in the Kinkou are unharmed.”
Olaf: “Hmph. I still haven’t found my glorious death… But perhaps that’s fine. This will become another chapter in the glorious saga of Olaf! Now, I depart to find my next foe, and build my legend even higher!”
Rengar: “I, too, have a worthy foe to seek. The Ruined King is your prey, but mine still lurks somewhere in the jungle…”
“So that’s it? Everyone is just leaving?”
“So much for our army of Sentinels…”
Vayne: “I wouldn’t be so sure about that. This… Little adventure of ours has made one thing clear: there are monsters out there that Demacia is nowhere near ready to face on its own. I think I’ll take over that abandoned Sentinel base and see about boosting our numbers a bit. If the Mageseekers have a problem with it, well… I’ve never exactly played by the rules, anyway.”
Jayce: “Can’t say I’d consider this Sentinel thing a full-time gig, but after everything that’s happened, I can at least pitch in and help Ada and Dess out, from time to time. A hero’s gotta help however he can, after-all.”
Akshan: “Well said! Though Shadya’s killer remains at large, I would happy to lend you my assistance again, if and when you need me. It is what she would want from me, after-all.”
Riven: “I’m… I’m honestly not sure what’s next for me. I could use a little time to think things over, if that’s alright.”
Gwen: “And you can be certain that I’ll pitch in however I can! Where the Black Mist goes, the Hallowed Mist will be there to fend it off!”
Lucian: “Heh… Well, we’ve still got a long way to go toward rebuildin’ the Sentinels, but it’s a start.”
Senna: “That’s right. We’ll get this base repaired and find a safe place to store the fetters, in case Viego ever tries to go for them again. On that note… Rookie, come here.”
You rise to your feet and approach the world map uncertainly, though Senna’s smile puts you at ease.
Senna: “Now that I think about it, you never did get properly sworn in, did you? I think it’s about time we make it official, and start your training in earnest. Repeat after me.”
Senna guides you through the ancient oath, carving the words deep into your soul. You can almost feel the Wayfinder thrumming in response as you take your first steps toward becoming a true Sentinel of Light.
I swear by the light of the ancients...
I will not run from darkness. I will light the way with a steadfast heart, And face each shadow with a ready weapon As a beacon, a warrior, a Sentinel, I defend myself, my fellows, and my world. May we stand together in the light, or fall in darkness.
Fight bravely and remember your oath.
Epilogue
Amidst the remnants of Helia stoops a lone figure, his fist tightening around his blade.
Viego: “How could this happen? I do not understand… My queen… You were within my grasp! That bitterness… That sorrow… Was that truly you?”
Thresh: “Ah, the sweet tones of misery…”
Viego: “Thresh.”
Viego rises to his feet and glares at the warden.
Viego: “What do you want, warden?”
Thresh: “Your anguish is every bit as delightful as I’d imagined. She was so close, wasn’t she? So close, and now she’s been stripped away from you a second time.”
Viego: “It matters not! I can find her again… However long it takes, I will find her!”
Thresh: “Yes, good. That sweet delusion still persists. It will be so satisfying watching the remnants of your resolve shatter.”
Viego: “You think to shatter me, warden?”
With a wave of his hand, Viego summons several wraiths to his side.
Viego: “Your lantern cannot ME, Thresh. Every soul within these Isles bends to my will, for I am their king!”
???: “You are no king.”
Suddenly, the ghosts of the kiilash leaps from the shadows, pouncing upon Viego’s wraiths and rending them to shreds.
Viego: “What is this!?”
???: “You are nothing more than a petulant child, lashing out over the loss of your favorite toy. You are unfit to call yourself Lord of the Dead.”
A massive figure looms over Viego, staring down at the Ruined King with contempt.
Viego: “Who are you?”
???: “I have many names. Founder of the Immortal Bastion. The Iron Revenant. Mordekaiser.”
Mordekaiser: “But you may call me Master.”
To Be Continued…

Chapter 236
Tumblr media
Trey
Last thing I want to do is end my marriage. That's never what you think about when making a stupid choice. Following up with a thought instead of thinking it through. That's where impulse gets you. To the point of a failed marriage.
"Jayla?" I say rubbing her leg.
"Where did my mother go?"
I shrug a bit. "She is about as..."
Chris comes walking into the room. "The hell wrong with you Cammies?"
"Ain't nothing wrong with me. There's only one Cammie." Cammie snaps.
"Oh yeah?" Chris says leaving back out. "Mama Cammie."
"Christopher." She snaps rolling her neck.
Chris shrugs once he is behind her back. I chuckle. Cammie and her mother do act similar to one another. Especially when mad or upset. They really look alike then. Gwen sits on the bed. She plays with her phone then she sighs heavily.
"I don't know what to say." Mama Cammie sighs.
"There's nothing to say. It was years ago."
Mama Cammie shakes her head. "Imagine someone hurting your son. You gonna feel like it's nothing? Someone needs some scars. I will be upset until I feel like I did something."
"It's too late."
"No it is not. You went to the hospital. I'm sure they did an assessment on you. I just got to find out what it said and who I need to press some charges against."
Cammie narrows her eyes at her. "You can't do that. Everyone knows… Everyone will know. No."
"Well your father... Lonnie is coming to California."
"Why did you tell him?" Cammie yells scaring Caden.
I move to her to get Caden. She swats at me holding him closer to her. Shit. I don't know what to do. I know she doesn't want me to walk out. I'm not even going to attempt to walk out.
"Better to tell Lonnie than me." Mama Cammie snaps. "I can't handle this."
"That's the problem."
Mama Cammie stands up. "I'm just so angry with you."
"Cause it's my fault?" Cammie cries.
"No. Of course not." Mama Cammie puts her hands on her hips. "You never had to go through any of this alone. I know we were close. You told me everything. I never wanted nothing but you to be the best Cammie you could. Dancing on some stage doesn't tell your whole story. All I saw was you not wanting to talk about that boy because I told you what would happen loving him. I just thought you couldn't take me saying I told you so. So I didn't say it."
"Good." Cammie snaps.
I try once again to take Caden. He wasn't liking Cammie being upset. He was ignoring every attempt she made of calming him down.
"I've dealt with... I don't know Jayla. If you never wanted me there then how could I be there?" Mama Cammie shrugs. "What do you want?"
"Nothing." Cammie says letting me take Caden.
He screams loudly. Shit. I walk around the room. Mama Cammie takes him from me. He cries loud again but calms down as she dramatically rocks him. Cammie's ass is fucking spoiled. You mad at your Mama cause she wasn't there but now you mad at her for trying to fight for you. My Jayla.
"Mama, you are a counselor. How would you help your client connect with her daughter?"
"Son, I just say some horse, you know what. They just like hearing someone neutral. They like being able to speak and someone listens."
I chuckle. "Jayla not listening to nobody."
"Jayla is Jayla." Her mother says. "I'm just mad at her for not thinking we were close to share stories. We just yell at each other. She should have been diagnosed years ago."
Cammie sucks her teeth. "With what?"
"Best baby making genes." Gwen says in a baby voice to Caden. "You so sweet."
"But I made that though."
Gwen smiles. "With Trey's help."
I chuckle. "Yeah that was me. Sweetness."
"Sugar flowing through your veins. Just freaking sweet." Cammie says cutting me an evil angry look.
"Jayla text your father and tell him not to come. He might feel unwanted and not come."
I chuckle. "I'm sure he already on the way."
Cammie randomly looks down her shirt. She grabs Lane's cup from the table and puts it in her shirt then sigh. Someone clears their throat. I don't know if it was Cammie or her mother. They were both looking at me. I chuckle to myself. A part of me was thinking damn I like Mommy titties. Leaking milk. I turn around and walk out the room. Bout to get hard in front of the wrong mama. Still tryna make her like me. That family is tough at getting close to. I walk into my mama's bedroom.
"Gwen taking your place with the boys." I say.
"I kicked that Chuckie Doll out of here." She snaps. "Bad ass little boy. Opened the gift I had for Forrest. Talking about it's for his brother."
I laugh. "That's where he got those pacifiers?"
She rolls her eyes. "Your wife is right majority of the time when it comes to her kids. Remember that. She knows what she doing. I should've learned how to beat his cute face when he was less mischievous. Not so smart."
"Cammie and her Mama had a talk."
"Good." Ma nods. "Gwen knows her daughter as well. She controls that crazy side."
I nod thinking about the conversation. "Damn were you there?"
"I already know, Tremaine. I didn't have to be there. Best thing you can do for your marriage is get those two back together. I was wrong about Cammie's mother. Just like I was wrong about Cammie. They rub you the wrong way at first."
I nod in agreement. Nothing needed. That's so true.
Tumblr media
Rollie
"You trying to piss me off on purpose."
I turn around looking at Leah. "Who?"
She looks me up and down. "You."
"What the fuck you talking about?" I ask calmly.
"Don't worry about it."
I shrug. "Fine."
All I did was walk in the bedroom and open my suitcase. I didn't do anything else. She didn't say anything else. So what am I supposed to say to what? I'm making her mad on purpose. By walking in the room? I check my phone to be sure she didn't send me anything. I don't even know.
"Aye, come here."
"No. You can't erase stuff with your fucking charm."
I sit down facing. "Is it cause you pregnant? What is it?"
"Just leave it alone."
"Yo, come here." I say again. Still trying not to be overly aggressive which I do a lot.
She sucks her teeth then walk over to me but not close enough to touch. "What's the difference between me here and there?"
I stand up going to her. Good question. I walk into her belly on purpose. She like 7 months and it really shows how close she is to having the baby.
"What did I do?"
"Same shit you always do." She snaps. I rub her hips. She battles with herself then gives in. "I tell Jordan no or I take something from her then you come and undo me completely. Take my opinion away like I'm not her mother."
I shrug. "Oh."
"Oh?"
"I thought I did something else." I say then chuckle. "What I did today that I need to fix?"
She folds her arm. "Did you ask why her phone was in here?"
"She just said it was in here. Leah." I pause. "I don't know what she said. I told her to go get her phone."
"She was texting in some group chat with older boys and girls. I don't remember all the shit they were talking about but nobody was filtering anything."
I frown. "Why didn't you tell me?"
She shrugs. "When did I have time, Rollie?"
"I know you did." I nod. "We have a child coming. If you doing all the parent shit alone what you need me for? Talk to me while the shit happening. You should have called me into the room before you took her phone. Now she has to be punished again when we could have done it together the first time."
"Blame it on me."
I slap her thigh then walk away. "Stop whining. I'll be back."
"Rollie?" My mom says stopping in the hallway. "While I'm already being the worst mother on the planet, I minus well talk to you. You probably feel like I did you wrong as well. Well I didn't. But I do want to say that you are being selfish by holding something against me that's your fault. I mean... what I'm saying is I won't take back what I said about you running the streets trying to get yourself killed. You made the decision to continue running the streets instead of getting your life together."
She pauses, maybe for a response. I'm not sure why cause ain't shit to say.
"You could have been anything more than a convicted felon. I never wanted you to limit yourself to that. Your father wouldn't have it. But anyway. I really want to be in your life. You are still my baby boy. My only son. My first child. The first person I knew I would have and love forever. Nobody was there for you more than me your whole life. So yeah... I'm a bitch I know. But you aren't too far from the block in a male sense. You just stubborn."
I shrug. "Okay."
"Okay, nothing Rollie." She snaps.
"So what do you want?" I shrug. These fucking women.
She giggles. "A hug."
I frown my face. A fucking hug? "Okay, Cheesy."
I hug her short ass. I don't know who this lady is that wants to work on her fucking attitude. Never has she wanted to work with people to correct the shit her ass has done. But she saying let's forget the shit in the past. I'm okay with that. I do want her to be in my child's life. She was a great mother. Like she said she was always there for me when I was doing right. I'm just getting my damn life together.
"I can make you feel better and be a man about mine. I should have listened to you. Finished high school and went to college."
"You aren't even 40. You can be everything you could have been at 20." She smiles patting my back. "I'm sorry we had to go through so much to undo a broken heart. I should have just... I don't know. Don't know what I should have done."
I hug her tighter. My mother was probably 5'5 with 6' heels. I look down at her teeth. Top of her head came to my shoulders and she had on shoes. I never thought about what I would do if my mother came to me apologetic or whatever the hell she calls this. Didn't expect it. But she my mama at the end of the day and I would go broke paying someone else to wipe her ass if she needed it. I guess we all growing up.
"Are we done here? You soft."
She walks away abruptly. I don't know about this suddenly redemption shit. It's all good though. Like I said I want her in my child's life. She fucking spoils Lane and he adores her like his other grandma. So I can try.
"Why are you standing in the hallway, Rollie? I just knew you weren't doing what you should have been." Leah whines. "Can you get my food from the front door?"
"Yeah." I say walking away. "Then do what?"
She sucks her teeth. "Get your daughter."
"Oh." I say walking away then cutting my eyes back towards her.
When she became my daughter? Before we was mad about her being my daughter. Now she calling her that. Jordan sees me coming and hides.
"I heard what mommy said. Don't come get me."
"Go to your mother." I say walking to the front.
She whines. "She won't listen. She just yells."
"I'm coming in there. Give me that phone then go stand near the door. Wait for me."
"You said I could get it." She whines.
"Don't make this hard on us."
She stomps out the room leaving her phone on the couch. I sigh.
"Get back in here. I said give it to me."
"Not fair." She whispers.
I take the phone from her. "Stop acting."
Know she doesn't get in trouble. Might get this piece of shit taken for a night. She has a damn tablet anyway. I walk to the front door and take the food. She could have told me it wasn't paid for. I go dig through Cammie's purse and take a 50 dollar bill from a stack. Look at this shit. Fucking rich ass. I'll tell her. Maybe.

Living In Our Minds | Carry On  ~ Padamé
Tumblr media
“So, you need a service dog and I need to partially relearn how to walk. And Lukey here has found his birth parents but isn’t sure if he actually wants to meet them. How much more screwed up could this family get?” I asked my siblings.
“I’m here!” Taylor shouted entering the living room.
“That’s your answer, Padamé,” Leia said laughing.
“I heard that, but your not wrong. All we need now is mum to come-” I said before I was cut off.
“Don’t you dare finish that thought. She’s tried to claim she can cure my epilepsy and cancer through vibes and aloe vera. Twice this week alone and it’s still Monday.”
“Ahh, the insanity of aunt Gwen. How I don’t miss that while in New York. You know Joe’s family is actually normal,” Taylor said eating some of the chips on the table.
“I wonder what that feels like?” I asked her.
“I have no clue. Maybe Luke can tell us. If he ever actually meets them,” Leia said looking at our unusually silent brother.
“I will. Maybe. I don’t know.”
“Relax you don’t have to decide now. Anyway ask your fuck buddy for advice,” Leia said confusing us all, “What he lives at home and the walls aren’t completely soundproof much to my disgust. Plus he’s around way too much to just be your best friend. And the way you look at each other is more than just friends.”
“Is our little Lukey fucking his best friend?” Taylor asked Luke.
“Maybe. But I’d rather not talk about it. Or my sexuality before you ask Leia,” Luke told us.
“I was just going to ask if I was actually correct. And what the time was,” Leia informed him.
“Two-thirty, why?” Luke told her.
“I have to go. I have acting and singing class,” She said with a dramatic flair.
“Really?” Taylor asked.
“God no. I have a doctor’s appointment and a study session at a friend’s house. So I’ll see you all later. Luke, can you pick me up later,” She said picking up her bag from the end of the sofa and leaving the room, peering around the corner of the door.
“Sure your friend Patrick’s right?” He said as she disappeared.
“Yes! I’ll see you all at Taylor’s concert!” She shouted back to us.
“Love you!” We shouted back.
“She thinks I’m screwing my best friend. While I know she’s screwing hers,” Luke said to us.
“What’s this about Leia and screwing?” Ryan said as he and dad walked into the living room.
“I don’t want you to know. Any of you. Maybe Padamé.”
“What you scared your daughter’s going to end up having sex with her best friend, uncle Hugh?” Taylor asked dad.
“I’m married to your aunt, Taylor. Nothing really scares me anymore. Trust me. All I’m scared about is Leia getting hurt by someone she truly cares about. Or her mother actually stopping her from going to the hospital. Ok maybe I have two fears,” Dad said to us all.
“Both are rational fears. And have you ever thought about marriage counselling?” Ryan asked him.
“Have you seen her Netflix show?”
“No, but Blake did and… I see your point. Maybe family counselling?”
“I’d rather go on a goop trip,” I said.
“I’d rather go to spacewalk without the spacesuit,” Luke said.
“I’d rather get eaten by I tiger and then thrown up and eaten by a shark,” Taylor said.
“I’d rather screw her and have another kid,” Dad said to him, “Which reminds me. Pads are you planning on using your room soon?”
“Please tell me mum isn’t pregnant, we don’t need a Kylo, Rey or Finn running around. Neither do you,” Luke said.
“No, she isn’t and if she is it’s not mine.”
“TMI!!” we all screamed at him together.
“She’s been in Atlanta for six months filming, I think we’d know by now if she was. And I don’t think we’d have another star wars name if she was.”
“That’d wreck the whole premise of us all.”
“Taylor, can we go to your place?” I asked her.
“Yup and we can continue our discussion on little Lukey,” Taylor said as Luke groaned.
“Do I have to?”
“Your mother’s getting home in 20 minutes, with some of her friends from work.”
“Which work?”
“GOOP,” Dad told us.
“Can we run?” Luke asked
“Yup!” Me and Taylor told him.
“Do you want us to come to the door with you?” I asked Luke as we drove up to Leia’s friend’s house.
“I can handle ringing a doorbell and asking for my sister,” Luke said to me.
“Sure you can…”
“I’ve had one drink Pads. That’s all. I’m fine. You have to worry about making sure Taylor isn’t too drunk to go on stage. Her fans are terrifying,” Luke told me looking at a slightly loopy Taylor in the back seat.
“I’ve got the expert on it. Right, Sophie?” I said turning to the back seat.
“I’m feeding her as many sandwiches as I can without ruining her vocal cords.”
“Joe?” Luke asked her.
“Kevin.”
“I’m going now.”
“COOL!” I yelled back at him, “He’s going to mess this up.”
“You looked in the file?” Sophie asked.
“Yeah everyone thought I was too loopy to do anything. I saw the parents’ photo and I’ve met these guys. So he just can’t find out,” I told her as Taylor seemed to come more and more out of her drunken state.
“You think they’ll recognize him?” Taylor asked.
“Maybe or maybe they’ll recognize him from the movies or…”
“Maybe they won’t and when he finds out he’ll be devastated that they were this close but just out of reach,” Taylor finished my thoughts, “Does he know their last name’s Holland?”
“No, he doesn’t,” Leia says taking her seat next to Taylor.
“What are Luke and your friend’s dad possibly talking about?” Sophie asked her.
“They’re talking about beer.”
“You knew?” Sophie asked.
“I heard a fight between Dom and Nikki a few weeks ago and I heard something about another child. And so with some quick googling, I figured it out. It wasn’t that hard,” Leia shrugged, “Also Sophie because you’re my cool sister-adjacent person and mum said I could get away with murder at the moment so… can I get my nose pierced?”
“First, thank you for calling me your sister. Second, your mother said murder not getting a nose piercing. Third, ask your actual sister and if she says yes I’ll go with you after the concert,” Sophie told her.
“I say do you have proof she said you could get away with anything and if so then yes,” I told her.
“I have a voice recording and given that much, to my dismay, she’s registered as my primary caregiver her word out ways dads. Also is Taylor drunk before her concert?” I told Leia before turning to Sophie as Luke got in the car.
“Yes, she is.”
“Cool.”
“Hey, Luke, enjoy bro talk?” I asked.
“Yes and Taylor can they come tonight? I may have promised them they could,” Luke said getting in the car.
“Honestly, I’m too drunk to care so sure.”
“I love drunk Taylor,” Leia said.
“Everyone does doll,” Taylor said dramatically.
“Drunk Tayor is the best Taylor by far. Although high Taylor is a contender,” Luke said to us.
“Taylor, what’s high Luke like?” I asked my cousin seated behind me as I pulled out onto the road.
“Fabulous darling absolutely fabulous. He starts flirting with Haz and Joe and even kissed Haz once. He goes fabulously open out of the closet and I love it. Watching him is fun. Now I’m ready for my concert,” Taylor flashed her arms wide.
“This is going to be interesting…”
“That my dear is the understatement of the century,” Taylor laughed.
“Oh god. What have we done?” Sophie said.
“I don’t know. Taylor, can you sing along with the radio for a few moments?” I asked her through the rearview mirror.
“Yay! Music!” Taylor said before she started singing.
“She knows the words at least,” Luke said to us all.
“She’s doing better than me,” Leia said from the back.
“Maybe we should call someone on her team?” Luke asked.
“I’ll call aunty Andrea and tell her what’s going on. Luke, could you call Joe? Sophie, can you handle Karlie?” Leia said to us.
“Sure,” They told her.
“Sorry guys my cousins took me to a pub before the concert and I got a little drunk so if I get the words wrong please correct me. So please just let me live. So London make some noise!
“We can go drivin' in, on my scooter,” Taylor stated singing as I pushed Luke onto the stage with the mic.
“Uh, you know, just riding in London Alright,” Luke sang walking onto the stage the crowd roared when they saw him.
“I love my hometown as much as Motown, I love SoCal And you know I love Springsteen, faded blue jeans, Tennessee whiskey,” Taylor sang again.
“But something happened, I heard him laughing, I saw the dimples first and then I heard the accent,” Luke sang before they stated singing together.
“He’s thinking about Haz, he has to be,” I said to Leia as we danced in the wings.
BANG!!!!!!!!
“Shit everyone get down!” I yelled backstage grabbing Sophie and Leia as we dived to the floor.
After a round went off and security got the guy we walked onto the stage to see the carnage. What we saw forever changed us.
Leia couldn’t breathe or even stand, shaking like a chihuahua.
Sophie screamed like a banshee.
I shouted like my life depended on it.
Mum cried like she’d never shed a tear before
And Dad punched the shooter when security brought him around.
Aunt Andrea was stood like a statue like many of the other people backstage.
What the hell had just happened was the one thing everyone was thinking.

Three Graves
Peter gets cleaned up and settles his resolution to reach out to MJ before visiting Gwen. After all, you want to look your best for important people.
"'Cause you're worth it, Gwendy," he says, setting down a takeout cup of coffee the way she liked it against the base of her headstone and sinking to sit criss-crossed in front of it cradling his own. A weak shield against the New Year's cold.
It's been just warm enough just long enough to sweep the earth in the cemetery clean of the usual frozen-puddles-and-slush cocktail and uncover the winter-dormant grass. Just a reminder of the promise of the end of winter. But it's still not exactly picnic weather, so Peter's alone with the Stacy family.
"So I've been on kind of a jaunt," he says. "Helped me get my head in order. I know, I know, it's about time." He bows his head and shuts his eyes, and for a second he's one stone-still silhouette on the slight slope of hill with all the others.
Then he throws his head back and huffs, blinking up at the clear blue sky. "So I came to fill you in. I know you'd want to know."
He drags the heel of one hand across the corner of his eye. "After all, it's about you."
He puts his untouched coffee down too fast, then catches it with one spindly finger when it starts to overbalance and rights it. "I met these people, Gwen, and one of them... Let me start over. I've always been in this alone. Sorry, I shouldn't say things like that when I know you can't hit me. I know I had you. And the others. But this was -- this is different."
He takes a deep draft of the coffee. "Weirder, mostly."
_∩∩∩_
Gwen sits down in front of Peter's grave, folding into a tailor's seat in a graceful ballet movement.
"Hey," she says, and reaches out and knocks her knuckles against the headstone. A one-sided fist bump.
She folds the arm back against herself, tugging her hoodie sleeves over her hands, and sits there silently for a while, curled up in a hunch. The world is statue-hard and all-over glittery with frost, and steam curls up when she exhales. She's wearing most of her suit underneath exercise clothes, and the cold seems to bite harder where its insulation doesn't cover her at her face and hands.
She's out of practice talking to people, and Peter was always the one who would say something to get the conversation going anyway.
"I have had a week," she says at last. "You'd have liked it." She thinks of the older Peter, scowling and looking exasperated. "Okay, maybe you'd have hated it."
She sighs and touches the stone again, pressing her hand flat against it. It hurts, the rock hungrily leeching the warmth out of her body.
"I'm trying the whole friend thing again," she says. "I don't know what you would have -- I know neither of us ever really liked people, so maybe you wouldn't think I should. But you also seemed better at knowing what was best for me than what you needed for yourself, so maybe you would have thought it was a good idea. Because I'm pretty sure this is -- best. For me. That is." She snorts. "I was better at you than me, too."
She pulls her hand back and rubs it against her knee, trying to force warmth back into it. With her augmented metabolism, her whitened fingers flush hot again faster than they should. "I definitely still prefer problems you can solve with hitting something. Or by breaking and entering. ...That doesn't mean it's obvious I was going to have to let people in eventually, though! I was completely planning to never address my own feelings again. So take that." She points at Peter's name, taps it lightly between the R and the second P with her fingertip, then pulls her arm close again, hugging it to herself. She sighs. "Maybe you'd think I was dumb for taking this long. I dunno. But Peter, the friend I made? I know you would have liked him. Whether you wanted to or not."
_∩∩∩_
Footsteps appear in the deep slush in front of Peter Parker's headstone. After a moment, an eye-baffling haze above them shivers and resolves into a boy in a hoodie.
Miles hunches into his civvies against the cold and looks around, head sweeping back and forth. Once he's sure he's alone, he tips his face down to face the grave. He stands there a moment, neck bent, hands in his jacket pockets.
The tokens people left that he recognizes from the last time he was here are starting to look kind of battered and sad, but most of them have been cleared out and replaced by a crop of new ones. It's a mosaic of red and blue and webs, because even if it didn't occur to most of them until it was too late to say it, New York loved Spider-Man.
"Hey," Miles says. "I'm back."
He shifts his feet a little to try to get cold water to stop seeping into his shoes. This agitates some stealthy puddle and soaks them worse.
"Man," he says to the headstone. "I cannot stop myself from looking around when I try using my spidey sense to check for people on purpose. I mean, with my eyes." He tugs his hands out of his pockets to raise them up to his face and demonstrates with wiggly finger motions, one hand in front of his eyeballs and one beside his head. "Did you get that? I know I don't need to, but I just can't shake it. I mean -- yet. I can't shake it yet. This whole Spider-Man thing is kind of a process."
There were a few inches of white fluffy snow the other day, so within hours it was like a massive slushee had been upended in every shallow dip or half-protected corner in the city. With all the foot traffic this place gets, the ground here is like half-frozen mud soup.
"But you know that."
He holds out one hand, staring at the palm of his glove for inspiration. "So hey, uh. I know I was kind of weird when I was here last time?" He puts the hand on the back of his neck, eyes peeling upward sheepishly. "I recognize now that coming here in a party store version of your costume was a little weird. Nobody ever saw my face, though! So I guess it worked out like I wanted it to?"
A big shrug, hands windmilling. "You know, except the other Spiders. I figure that's okay, though. Man, I wish you could have met them."
His shoulders slump, and he feels his eyes prickling. He huffs a fortifying breath, fast in and out. "But anyway. You know how I said I didn't think I could do this last time? It totally worked out. I'm Spider-Man now. I'm pretty sure you wouldn't mind. ...It turns out there are a lot of us.
“And Peter -- the other one, I mean. I mean, one of the other ones. He taught me some things, and-- I wish I'd gotten to learn more from you, but he was okay." He shifts his weight. Even more ice water floods into his shoes. "He was great actually. I don't need to pretend not to like him as much as I do when he's not even here. I...really hope I get to see him again someday. ...I don't know if you would have turned out like him, but -- it would have been okay if you did. You would have been okay, I mean."
The grave is silent. Somewhere nearby there’s the sound of snowmelt dripping.
"We took care of the collider!" says Miles. "Brooklyn did not get eaten by a black hole. ...Mm, mostly. Some of it still looks kinda weird. Though, now I know you're from Queens, so technically we're feuding a little and you should watch yourself." He goes for a chuckle, but it comes out kind of wet.
"And the--" He pauses, and when he speaks again his voice is less froggy. "And Kingpin is in FBI custody. And everybody else who helped him is too, or. Gone." Uncle Aaron. "...Dead." He hasn't visited Uncle Aaron's grave alone yet, but he's okay working on the mural for now.
He raises his head, blinking hard. "I wish--" His voice cuts off and he looks down, and when he looks up again his eyes aren't as tear-bright.
"Thank you, Peter."
_∩∩∩_
Peter hears her heels before anything else, click click, and then MJ is a warm weight settling against him.
"I thought you'd be here," she says.
"Am I that obvious?"
She elbows him without looking over. "No, I just know you." She reaches out and traces a finger over Gwen's name. "Hiya, Gwendy. Did Petey-o tell you his crazy story yet? Make sure he doesn't leave out the part where his alternate self was a successful blond. I guess you really do have more fun."
"Hey," says Peter, with automatic faux offense. Mary Jane's bundled up in a big ochre parka over a bunch of sweaters. He thinks about how his Mary Jane owns the same smart, lush ensemble the other MJ gave her press conference in, folded up in different parts of her closet.
"He wasn't successful," Peter says. "I'm just old."
"Are you calling me old?" MJ says.
"If the shoe fits," says Peter.
MJ whaps him on the arm.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry," says Peter, laughing. "No, no, you're a whole year younger than me. Clearly you walk in eternal youth."
MJ settles against him again. "Nah, it's okay," she says. "We're both old. Geriatric."
"What does that make Jonah?" asks Peter. "Commander of the skeleton war?"
"Mister Parker, was that a meme?" asks MJ, faux-scandalized. "Don't make me kids-these-days at you."
"What does that even mean?"
"I'd shake my cane and accuse you of eating too many avocados."
"Ugh, I feel like that's a meme," says Peter. "But I don't understand it."
"Do you not read the news?"
"The news only ever wants to yell about how terrible I am at me."
"When you extricated yourself from all our shared newspaper subscriptions -- you didn't replace them with any new ones, did you. You've basically been living in a box."
"Uh."
"I shouldn't have asked you to do that," she says. "I'm buying you an online Times account if you won't log back into mine." She turns to the grave. "We're a mess without you, as you can see," she tells it.
"Always," says Peter. "But we're doing alright."
They sit there silently for a minute, leaning on each other.
MJ reaches out and lifts up Gwen's cup. "I'm stealing some of your coffee, doll. Not like you don't still owe me a thousand sips of mine." She takes a draft, the liquid cooled from being on the ground, then makes a face. "I forgot she liked mint."
"I think she might have started liking it as a preemptive defense against you paying her back for always stealing from yours."
"Get her caramel next time. We both like caramel."
_∩∩∩_
Gwen hears footsteps crunching the grass behind her and twists around, rising into a crouch in a fluid spin.
It's Mary Jane, huddled in a huge yellow coat. She's wearing her chunky-knit fingerless gloves, the oatmeal ones, and boots over leggings, like she's daring the cold to even try it.
"Thought you'd be here," she says, closing the rest of the distance so she's beside Gwen as Gwen straightens the rest of the way. At Gwen's surprised incredulous look, the other girl snorts. "What, you think I don't know you that well yet? We're friends, aren't we?"
"...Yeah," says Gwen, fighting not to look like that's as much of a revelation as it is.
MJ hooks an arm with Gwen's, beaming showily, pleased with this victory. "Well, your little friend here is more observant than you give her credit for." She reaches out and boops Gwen on the nose. Gwen jumps, even though her spider sense warned her. It tickles.
MJ turns to face Peter's grave, and the grin slides off her face. The look it leaves behind is -- oddly muted. MJ is a very loud person, in Gwen's experience of her. About everything, all the time. Her outfit choices are loud. Her silent facial expressions are loud. Her singing is really loud, like she's got some stuff to work out. Sometimes their practices feel like MJ and Gwen are just fighting to drown each other out. They feel dangerous, like if one of them ever can't keep escalating, the other's sound will sweep her away. And then the other girls have to roar along to keep up.
Their recordings end up pretty noisy.
"I think I'd have liked to have met him," MJ says, very softly. There's nothing particular in the statement, and Gwen is suddenly aware she has no idea how to read MJ when she's not telegraphing her emotions at top volume and full saturation for the benefit all of New York.
Gwen thinks about four Peters, two married to Mary Janes. "Yeah, probably," she allows.
MJ sighs and reaches out the arm not linked with Gwen's. She rests her hand on the top of Peter's headstone, making a chain of three links. Gwen, MJ, grave.
"Hi, Peter," says MJ, her always bell-like voice chiming more mellifluously than ever. Like she's trying to charm someone new. "Thanks for taking care of this girl when I couldn't, yeah?"
Then she takes her hand away, breaking the spell, and starts to tug Gwen away by their linked arms. Gwen lets the taller girl pull her away. It would be pretty suspicious for her to stay as still as she could, even if part of her just wants to anchor herself here like a statue until sunset. Be still with him for a while.
"Come on, hun," says MJ. "That's enough gabbing with the dead. Let's gather the other girls: We can have breakfast before practice."
Gwen stumbles as they hit the path. "Wait, there's practice today? It's Thursday?"
MJ stares at her as she pauses to give Gwen a chance to get upright. "It's Tuesday practice, Gwen. Man, you're bad with dates, aren't you?"
"Hey, I've been --" Stuck in another dimension, time traveling. "Busy with stuff."
MJ quirks one eyebrow at her, the twinkle in her eyes and the press of her half-smile telegraphing 'are you serious?' at Gwen so clearly that for a split second Gwen is sure MJ knows.
But Mary Jane just rolls her eyes and tugs Gwen along more insistently.
"Breakfast sounds nice," Gwen allows.
"Are you plotting to steal from my coffee again?"
Gwen hums noncommittally.
"Gw-e-n!" MJ protests. "I will buy you your own coffee! I do not understand why you're always on the hunt for sips of mine!"
"Stolen food just tastes better," says Gwen. "It's science."
"You're a menace, Gwen-do-lyn," says MJ. "I know your secret identity--"
Gwen jumps.
"--as a filthy coffee thief."
"C-caught me," stutters Gwen.
"Yeah I did," says MJ quietly.
"What?"
"Hm, nothing."
And Gwen lets Mary Jane pull her out of the graveyard and out toward their friends.

Miles' spidey sense tells him someone's behind him before he hears them, and he spins around, part of him half expecting a repeat of last time he got crept up on here.
Close, but wrong Parker. It's May, picking her way carefully through the frozen slush. She looks up only after he's flinched his hands up defensively and then dropped them again.
"Oh, Miles!" she says. "I wasn't expecting you here."
She stops once she's beside him, and sighs. "I just thought, now that the crowds have mostly thinned out, it would be a good time to talk to him. Guess we both had the same idea, huh?" She looks around like she doesn't quite want to look at her nephew's grave, the twists of her head stopping when she's facing the church. "This place is so famous. It's so strange that Peter is buried here."
She finally looks down at the bedecked headstone. "I always thought me and him and Ben would all end up in the same place. But, well, Jonah was crying and -- I think it makes people feel better."
Miles remembers something Peter -- janky, old Peter -- said. "Are you guys Jewish too?"
May looks at him strangely, but must not need to ask who 'too' refers to, because she just flickers a quick shrug. "Ben was. I thought about converting when we got married, but his family was never that traditional, so I never got around to it. But that doesn't mean it wasn't important to them."
Miles reaches out and raps his fingers extra lightly on a Roman cross cropping up from the top of a headstone. He then immediately feels bad, and pats it gingerly as he says, "Then this must be extra weird."
May smiles.
She puts a hand on his shoulder, thin but strong. "He'd be proud, you know."
"Yeah." Miles gives the marker one last nod as he turns to go. "I know."

Hard Truths (Spiderman Noir and Spider-Family)(2)
Poor Noir, I need to give him some fluff.
“Come on Pete, let me see some action!”
“Nope, you still have to recover.” Peter B. winced at the coffee cup tossed his way, catching it with ease. It had been about a week and a half since Noir had recovered enough to no longer need bedrest, but he was still weak. Peter B. had offered to help with the crime-fighting aspects, while Noir resumed the detective work side of things. At first, it had been received well, but now Noir seemed to be suffering cabin-fever, and it showed. He grew surlier as time passed, and forbade the younger three from visiting his dimension.
“I can’t just...sit here! I need to be out there!” He snapped, hands balling into fists.
“No, you’ll get your ass handed to you.” Peter sighed, shaking his head as he moved to sit on the edge of the private eye’s desk. He knew what it was like to be withheld from saving his city, and it had to be tearing Noir up. “Let the kids visit, I know they’ll be-”
“No. No, they will not come here until I’m allowed out.” Noir practically snarled, taking a deep breath before letting his shoulders slump. “No…”
“Peter.” The private eye looked up, only to see his counterpart giving him a pointed look. It was strange to hear his name coming from a similar look alike, but he had grown as used to it as he would ever be. “They can handle themselves, you know they can.”
“Says you!” Noir replied immediately. “Even you shouldn’t be here.”
“I think I can handle a few nazis.” The other scoffed, knowing exactly what was being referred to. Noir shook his head, turning slightly as a coughing fit overcame him. After taking a few breaths, he scowled and looked back at Peter B.
“If anything were to happen to them, I would never forgive myself.” He rasped, pushing some paperwork away from him. “My world is not meant for children.”
“Look, Peter, they aren’t normal kids.” The older sighed, running his hands over his face. “I would trust all of them with my life, and I bet my miserable savings account that you feel the same.” He cracked a grin when he heard a soft exhale from the detective, leaning closer to get into his line of sight. “Let them come, at least to say hello. Peni won’t stop asking to come by ya know.”
“Low blow Parker.” He grumbled, shaking his head. “Sitting pretty over there while I’m nothin’ more than what feels like a dewdropper.”
“A what?” Peter B. tilted his head.
“Basically I’m sittin’ on my heels being useless.” He explained, forgetting his terminology often confused the others.
“I mean, you’re still solving cases.” He suggested, the scathing look sent his way letting Peter know he was rather annoyed. “Fair point, I would be just as restless as yourself. Peni would be a great distraction you know.” The other Peter sighed in annoyance, giving the older Spiderman a bit of a grin. “See?”
“Ah lay off you live wire.” Noir crossed his arms, flicking a finger. Peter B. just chuckled and went to call for Peni to join them. Noir could be a grumpy pain in the ass for someone who was younger than he was, but in his world, it was figured as such. The Japanese girl was so happy to finally be allowed a visit, giving Noir the biggest hug she could manage after she launched into his office. The scowl and gloom seemed to lift in an instant, the detective smiling as he moved her up onto his lap.
“I’m so happy I finally get to see you!” She gushed, those eyes growing to an impossible length.
“Sorry sweetheart, I’ve been busier than a speakeasy since I got back.” He smiled, feeling a bit guilty. Peni seemed to accept this, launching off into tales of her city while he sat back to listen. Noir still hadn’t told her that his communicator had been broken purposefully, having heard she had nearly had a panic attack making him a stronger one. An intense feeling had overcome him at hearing that. It made Noir’s stomach churn, and a weight settled on his chest until he had seen her smile once again.
Guilt.
Of course one of the first emotions he would feel in years would be that. Guilt had followed him at the beginning. It had settled in his very bones, always seeing that face, always hearing that gun. It was different this time though, something that he had been mulling over for some time. This guilt was...stronger, the type that made him anxious. He didn’t like this guilt, it wouldn’t go away when he willed it to. It only receded whenever Peni would regale him with stories, or when Miles showed him his art and taught him colors. Or when Gwen would play music for him to pass the time. Or when Ham and Peter B. would tease him with corny jokes and puns that got the softest of chuckles. Those times made the guilt settle in whenever he picked up his razor, or when he hoped for a shootout of old.
“Peter?” Blinking, Noir looked down to see Peni, a frown on her face. “Are you listening?”
“Of course doll.” He gave a nod, the mask covering his grimace. She raised an eyebrow, putting her hands on her hips with a huff.
“You weren’t! What were you thinking about? You’ve been doing that a lot lately.” She felt the detective beneath her stiffen, clearly off guard with such a question. Tension began to fill the air, Peni keeping her gaze on Noir, with Peter B. watching on with his own frown.
“You’re too much of a spitfire.” Noir eventually spoke, gaze settled on the wall above Peni. “Too young, and too good ta be in our line of work.”
“I’m still a good Spiderwoman.” She replied, noting Peter B’s cautious motion to pull back.
“You should be playin’ with kids yer age, not fightin’ biscuit boxers with half a mind ta bump you off without a thought.” He kept talking, as if not having heard her. “Here I thought only I had that burden, yet now I know there are just...endless versions. Now I know how small I am, how much my work might mean nothin’.” Looking down, he very carefully put his hand on Peni’s head. “Ah kid...sometimes, I think it would have been better had I not met you all.”
“Peter...what do you mean?” His older version asked, a familiar feeling of dread coiling in the bottom of his gut.
“It’s...the little Jane shouldn’t hear this.” He shook his head, removing his hand. “Please, go home Peni.”
“Mr. Noir, what are you saying?” She asked, gasping a little when she was lifted and set on her feet. She didn’t like the way he was talking, it reminded her of someone she knew, and that scared her.
“Noir, that’s not a good idea.” Peter B. spoke up but stopped when a loud crack rang out. Peni had slapped the other Peter, who was staring at her in shock.
“I won’t leave!” She yelled, big tears going down her cheeks as she hugged him tightly. “I know what you’re saying, and I won’t let it happen!”
“Oh, kid...you shouldn't,” Noir spoke up, that feeling of guilt almost overpowering him. “No, no no...not you.”
“I won’t lose you. I promised that I would bring us all back, and that means you too.” She sniffled, looking up at the man she basically considered father. “Please don’t go, we all love you.”
“I-I...I love you all too.” Peter spoke, wiping away some of her tears with his gloved hands. “You shouldn’t...I should have…”
“No use hiding it now.” Peter B. spoke up from the corner, shaking his head slightly. “How long?”
“Since the night I bumped off my first piker.” He replied quietly, hoping Peni wouldn’t understand. “Too long.”
“Yea…” The older man ran a hand over his face, watching Peni get back up in Noir’s lap and hug him tightly. Ham was right, it was gonna be a hell of a road to get Noir to realize he wasn't alone in this. It would be worth it though, he was part of their Spider-Family, and no one hurt their family, not even one of their own.

Chapter 30 - Leila
Leila sat there, awkwardly, as Mr. Apex aggressively sucked on Morgan's breast. His animalistic growls of pleasure forced Leila to avert her eyes. She chose to stare at the floor, thinking it would make the situation she was in less awkward. It did not. "Slow down," Morgan said playfully. "I have a proposal I'd like to present to you."
"You talk," Mr. Apex said in a hoarse voice. "I'll listen."
"As you may know, I'm not too fond of the way the elders have been acting as of late, and it has come to my attention that they are preparing to do something heinous."
"Aren't they always," Mr. Apex said with a menacing growl. "At least when Gwen was in charge, the elders stood for the betterment of all people. Not just themselves."
"Which is why, I'm removing myself as one of their supporters. I've been conversing with my graduates and their families, and they've all sided with me. I've already started to set up a community in the old kingdom of Zein. We're still limited to the country's outskirts, but as soon I figure out the heat problem, I will be the queen of my very own country."
"And you've come here to ask me what, exactly?"
"I want you to marry me."
Leila suddenly looked up and gasped, not from what Morgan said, but from what she saw in the window to the redwoods. Morgan glanced at Leila and continued as if she wasn't there. "We'll combine schools, and present a unified front in the event that the elders try to do anything drastic. But, regardless of your decision, I have come her to release you from the binding. The elders, however, will not like that you're free. They will try and bind you again."
The green eyes Leila saw starring at her through black flames just sat there, waiting. She was going to say something, but her body froze with fear. "So," Mr. Apex said with a look of burden. "It's face the elders in another war alone, or together in a loveless marriage."
"I do love you though, as friend, but any kind of love is better than none at all. I know Gwendolyn would've made you the same offer."
"And I would've gladly accepted it, but I'm not sure if I'm going to live passed the night." Mr. Apex stood up, and moved Morgan to the side. He turned and face the window to redwoods, and roared. "REVEAL YOURSELF, MONSTER!"
The overwhelming sound of his voice shook Leila out of her frozen state. She stood up and ran to Morgan. Leila took off her blazer and put it over Morgan's shoulders. "We need to leave!" Leila almost screamed.
"Why? What is that?" Morgan asked.
Before Leila could say anything, a low throaty laughter drowned out all the sound in the room. The black flames changed into the shape of a man. His uncanny green eyes scanning the entire room, and then finally settling on Mr. Apex. The black flamed man tore open the window from the redwoods and stepped into Mr. Apex's office. Surprisingly, Leila felt no heat coming from the flames, nor did the carpet where he stood catch on fire. "The Immortal Beast," the flames spoke in a deep inhuman voice. "Alas, we finally meet."
"Why have you come here, monster?" Mr. Apex growled.
"I've come for my prize."
"Go Morgan," Mr. Apex said in a soft voice. "Take my students with you. Maybe they'll fare better in your care, then they did mine."
Mr. Apex began to grow. His clothes started to tear, golden fur sprouted from every part of his body, and his head transformed into that of a wolf. "Now," he spoke in deep, animal infused, voice. "Let us monsters fight. I will show to you I'm no mere prize to be collected." He roared again and his body began to coat itself with blood red flames.
At the same time, Mr. Apex's aura erupted from his body, blowing Leila and Morgan off their feet, throwing them into the wall like weight rag dolls. Leila heard the black flamed man begin to laugh again. "Is that supposed to frighten me?" He said amused. "I guess, It is time I show you what a real monster looks like."
The black flamed man grew until he touched the ceiling. The black flames dissipated and the body of a much larger animal revealed itself. As Leila looked at it, she couldn't tell what kind of animal it was. Its skin was black and scaly like a snake. Its arms were covered in black fur, and thicker than Mr. Apex's entire body. The claws jutting from its fingers were longer than the fingers themselves. Its legs reminded Leila of a dog standing on its hind legs, and its head was shaped like a wolf, but its snout was longer than it should have been. The black flames that had covered the creature before, were now coating it from the back of its head, to the very tip of its long thick tail. A pair of tight black shorts was the only Identifying factor that this creature had some sort of humanity.
The black creature was big, bigger than Mr. Apex in his animal form, and much too big for his office. It had to hunch over to fit in the small room. The ceiling above the creature began to crack. At first, Leila thought it was still growing, but she was wrong. Its aura exploded from its body, coating everything thing in black flames, and throwing Leila and Morgan against the wall for a second time.
Now, Leila couldn't tell you what the black creature sounded like as it tilted its head back and roared, because her eardrums had ruptured. She closed her eyes and screamed from the pain as the ground shook. It roared so loud, Leila felt her bones vibrate like a turning fork made from her very own skeleton.
Leila's hearing slowly came back as her eardrums healed at an accelerated rate. Though all she could hear was a soft ringing, a soft voice spoke to her. The voice sounded like man was speaking using her own voice. "Daughter of Merlin," it said. "You have nothing to fear from me. I would never intentionally hurt you. No God would hurt a child of Merlin and invoke his wrath. Take your friend, and the students with you. Get them far from here. It would do me great pain to see innocent younglins caught up in my hunt. Do hurry, I'm brimming with so much excitement, I don't know much longer I can wait."
When Leila opened her eyes she on some kind of field, there were lines in the grass, and bleachers on all four sides. Morgan lay next to her, unconscious. The entire student body was behind them. One of the teachers came and checked on them, "Are you alright," he asked.
The teacher was accompanied by a large student with golden bull horns jutting out of both sides of his head. "I'm fine," Leila said deliriously. "Check on her."
After a minute, the teacher had the large student carry Morgan, and then he returned to Leila and helped her stand up. "She might have a concussion, and there isn't much I can for her here. Do you know how we all got out here?"
"Yeah, I think that monster teleported us all here. No, not a monster, I think it called itself a God, but right now it doesn't matter what it is. We need to leave, immediately!" Leila opened a giant portal to the beach in her pocket dimension. "Everyone go through the portal, now!" She shouted.
"Why do we need to leave?" A nearby student asked. "Let's just wait for headmaster to kick that thing's ass."
"Because," Leila said impatiently. "They're waiting for us to leave so we dont get caught up in their fight! But, one of them isn't gonna wait for much long!"
Just then, the ground began to shake, and an explosion lit the sky with blood red flames. Another explosion went off, and black flames swallowed the red ones. Two figures appeared in sky. One of them roared so loud, Leila's head began to throb, and her ears started ringing painfully. The other shouted, "Run you fools!" With those final words, everyone poured into the portal, and onto Spencer's front porch.

Ruination Rewrite: Finale
Fight bravely and remember your oath.

happy early xmas for me, since I really love WinterIron concept so much lately so why not?
Rating: General/Teen Characters: James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes, Tony Stark, Steve Rogers Relationship(s): James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes/Tony Stark, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes & Steve Rogers Other Tags: Single parent!Bucky, kid!Steve, Family, pre-relationship, alternate universe - modern/no power, Christmas themed
                                                 ・。・゜★・。・。☆・゜・。
“Stevie, take it easy, pal. We still have some time before dinner time. You can choose whichever slowly,” Bucky huffed, shaking his head as he looked at his little spitfire fondly, who seemed so unsure which toy he wanted to get. It had been a long while since they managed to shop together like this, especially as it was getting closer to Christmas holiday. Last year was a lonely one for both of them, as Bucky couldn’t go home from his tour and Steve stuck with his Poppa and Nana. It broke his heart so much when he tried to video call his family, only to see Steve wailed really hard for his Dadda until the boy fell asleep, still crying. But now he came home for real and could spend all time he had with his beloved son. Taking the little guy to the toys store to pick up what Steve wanted for his Christmas gift seemed like a great idea a few hours ago.
And it didn’t even take more than 30 minutes until Bucky completely lost him.
                                        ・。・゜★・。・。☆・゜・。
He knew he shouldn’t go to the store alone without any supervisions or guarding. Even Happy didn’t know that his employer just gone from the office, wearing the best civilian, cheap clothes he got and simply dashed into the said best toys shop in the city. Tony Stark probably could just get whatever he needed right now by ordering online. Heck, maybe even bought five the exact things. Maybe even the most expensive one in the world with just a single click from his tablet.
But no, Pepper would be so pissed if Tony tried to spoil her daughter, Gwen, by buying yet another expensive toy for the lovely baby girl’s Christmas present. But then again, Tony just wanted to be the coolest uncle ever (besides Rhodey, maybe, they could share the honorable title with him) for her. Also, again, Pepper would notice if Tony bought anything suspicious like the last time he bought the $300,000 Barbie doll for Gwen. Or that one time when he bought a dollhouse worth at least $250,000. Partially, it was his fault for just bought whatever caught his eyes in the first place.
It was just a present, Gwen shouldn’t care about how much they worth and simply played with the gifts!
Alas, the parents knew and Pepper banned him to buy anything online or way too expensive anymore. So here he was, at the suburban area that somehow had the best and apparently also the largest toy store in the whole city. Fair enough, since the said store was more like a renovated warehouse anyway. Thus, the adventure began from the time Tony entered the place, which rather packed with families right now because the Winter holiday was approaching fast.
Lucky for him, no one seemed to notice his face yet. So he could quietly slipped deeper into the store while looking around.
What he didn’t expect was that there was a little boy who was sleeping alone. On top of a big teddy bear’s belly. And no one else seemed to see it as a strange scene. Some questions had been inside Tony’s head already: who’s this boy? Why is he alone? How old is he, Jesus Christ, he’s so tiny and very skinny but adorable with those Captain America onesie getup hidden briefly under another layer of warm clothes awww - but where’s the parents? Tony didn’t hear any announcements or a voice of distress parents calling names for their child yet. But there was no way this boy was walking alone, right? Despite how much he didn’t want to get involved and only wanted to look for the presents, Tony could imagine how the parents would feel when they knew they just lost their kids inside the store. It wasn’t like the little boy was equipped with any kind of gadgets for the parents to call as well.
Groaning internally, Tony walked closer to the boy who started to stir awake. Let’s just hope he won’t cry or even wail enough for other people to accuse him as a kidnapper, geez.
“Heya, little dude. Sleep well? I assume you’re not walking around the shop alone, since you look really small and I don’t think any parents should allow you to do that yet.” Welp, that earned the man some sleepy glare, which should look a bit scary, but somehow made the boy looked even cuter. “Not that I think you’re small small, I mean uh - anyway, where’s you parents? Are you here with them, right? You got separated?”
And the little kid - Tony noticed how blue his eyes were - only stared at him, looking unconvinced. Slowly, the boy wiped his eyes with one hand before stepping down from the teddy bear. Blue eyes still looked up at Tony.
“...Dadda said not to talk to a stranger if I’m alone. And I don’t know you.” Oh good, the boy was speaking, yay. Tony was afraid what if the boy wasn’t old enough to even speak proper English yet, but it seemed he underestimated how fast children could grow nowadays. The man grinned, giving his best, mostly not - well, hopefully not that kind of awkward, smile and crouching down to the boy’s level.
“Your Dadda is a good man and you’re such a good kid for listening to him. So I suppose a proper introduction is in order, you know, so we can get to know to each other and we’re no longer strangers. Well, technically still strangers, but at least there’s a progress. So? I’m Tony, what’s your name, little guy?”
Another glare, before the boy said, “I’m not little, I’m 3,” well it’s still too little for Tony, but he won’t argue with that, “....’m Steve.”
Honestly, Tony’s heart melted a little when he saw how brave and yet still so shy this Steve boy acted towards the man. Now he really wanted to make sure the boy returned safely to his parents, almost instantly forgetting his own mission to the store. Well, it was a big store, he could still find something proper later on. Now, back to Steve.
“Oh, wow okay Steve, you’re a big boy then. My bad. Nice to meet you, glad we’re already on first name basis at our first meeting or we had to go through boring and awkward situation before getting where we are,” okay, no more rambling to the poor kid. Tony would just confuse him even more. “So, Steve, Stevie, can you tell me where the last time you see your Dadda? Or Momma? You go together with them, right?”
Tony swore the kid’s expression changed for a brief seconds there before he looked down at the floor, two small hands played with the hem of his sleeve. “Don’t have mommy. Only with Dadda,” Steve mumbled, which made a wonder, and another ton of questions but Tony kept them to himself.
“With your Dadda, then.” the man nodded, “What do you say if we go to the help center and wait for your Dadda there? I’m pretty sure it’ll be kinda pointless to search for him by ourselves in this big place, so we should go and make sure he can find you at one place. What do you say?”
“And how can I be sure that you won’t trick and kidnap me?” Wow, this kid was really perceptive and fully aware his situation could go wrong if he wasn’t careful to who he should trust. Tony absolutely underestimated this little guy so much. Quick, think of something.
“Because,” Tony shushed, looking around before beckoning the kid to come closer. He pulled his right sleeve a bit to reveal a rather gaudy toy watch with Iron Man design on it - courtesy of his lovely niece Gwen, and she insisted Tony to keep wearing it and somehow it became his habit now. Even if he had some proper watches collection. “Don’t tell anyone, but I’m actually Iron Man, Cap. I know you’re actually Captain America, right? I can see through you with those kind of red-white-blue outfit you hid inside that jacket, you know.”
“You’re silly,” Steve giggled, and Tony grinned again.
“Oh, am I now? I’m hurt, Cap, I thought you’ll be less judgmental in person.” He faked a gasp, one hand clenching his chest before grinning again, “Us Avengers have to watch each other’s back, no? So why don’t you let me help you for this once? Pinky promise no funny business, I can swear it by my Arc Reactor. I’d say my heart, but I guess my Arc Reactor is one and another my second heart and even more important to keep me alive anyway, so there’s that.”
“You’re still silly, but alright, Mister Tony. My Dadda likes Iron Man too and I think I can trust you not going to do anything funny to me.”
“I probably already said this, but your Dadda is a good man with a good taste,” he laughed, “Now I can’t wait to see what your Dadda looks like, I have a hunch that me and your Dadda can get along just fine with our similarity, then.”
                                       ・。・゜★・。・。☆・゜・。
Turned out Steve’s father had a pair blue eyes as well. Very blue eyes and Tony was entrapped. He probably lost a few first words here and there, okay, maybe a lot of words when they finally met at the customer help desk. The very first part that he was aware was those gorgeous blue eyes and  deep, raspy voice probably roughed up because he shouted too much for his son, and -
“Mr. Tony?”
Oh, oh. Shit. How long he had been staring, again? “Yes? Yeah, uhm, I’m still listening. Got a bit distracted a bit just now. Too much noises around here, don’t you think - what was it that you said again?”
Tony thought the man would be offended at least, but he just gave Tony an understanding smile. “I can sympathize. Not quite a fan of crowded places with too much noises myself, but I’m trying. What I wanted to say was thank you for finding and bringing Steve here for me.” Bucky smiled at the little boy, who curled himself up on Bucky’s arms and wrapped his tiny arms around the man’s neck, looking ready to sleep again. “I was panicking and probably running around the store just to find him until I got back my common sense and went to the customer desk before I started crying myself.”
Oh, dear God, those laughter. Tony was pretty sure that it should be so illegal to laugh or even chuckle so beautifully like that. The father himself in overall had been already illegal. Not only just because of those blue eyes, but that strong jaw, those impressive cheekbones that probably could cut, rather long hair that look quite silky that he tied into a messy bun that suited the man so much, how the corners of his eyes crinkled when he laughed -
Wait, why was the father still laughing at him?
“Believe me, my hair usually ain’t as silky as you think. Maybe because I took the wrong shampoo rather than my usual one for a whole month and didn’t realize it. Who knows a baby shampoo can do such a thing.”
Tony smacked his face as hard as he could. “Oh, my God. Did I say it out loud in front of you? I said it out loud in front of you and your kid. Oh God. I swear I’m not a creep, I just have a tendency to say whatever came out in my mind and it’s not helping since I have a very big mouth - no other intention intended. I’m so sorry about this. I hope you won’t sue me. Please don’t sue me. I still have to attend the Christmas party with all my friends - which probably can be counted with one hand - and spend more time with my lovely little niece. What would she think if she knew his cool uncle just got into prison because he just accidentally compliments his sudden crush - I’m going to shut up now before you really want to sue me.”
To his surprise, the father didn’t seem to annoyed to the very least. He just simply...blushed and scratched the back of his neck with his free hand. “Uhm, thank you? I’m going to pretend I didn’t hear that if you want. And no, I won’t sue you. You just saved my Stevie from getting lost too far. Besides, he said you’re, like, Iron Man?” he teased, starting to sound more confident, “No way I’m going to sue Iron Man who just saved my son, he’s way too cool for being taken into prison for that. And I’m a big fan of Iron Man myself. Isn’t that right, Stevie?” The said boy looked up at both Tony and Bucky, smiled sleepily and continued burying his face to the man’s shoulder.
Tony blinked stupidly, “Really?” he cleaned his throat before smirking at the man, “Really, now. Glad to hear that then, Steve’s father.”
“Bucky.”
“Bless you.”
“No, not that,” the man - Bucky - snorted. “That’s my name. Well, James, actually. But no one calls me that unless you’re my Ma.”
“Bucky, eh? Nice to meet you. I like the sound of it, suits you. I was gonna ask where you got ‘Bucky’ out of James, but I guess you got other people asking you that a lot and it seems like a question for a first date thing - I mean. Shi - shoot, sorry. No, not that I want to pressure you with such a thing. I just like talking whatever came out of my mind, again. This sounds awkward already, sorry about that.”
“No, that’s okay. Well, Mr. Iron Man,” Bucky bit his lower lip, considering, “I was hoping maybe you can join us for tonight’s dinner as a thank you, it’s the least I can do to repay you. Maybe by then we can get to know each other fairly well, don’t you think? Unless if you already had a plan.”
Again, Tony blinked, “Dinner? With you and Steve? You sure I won’t interrupting your family bonding time?”
“Absolutely sure. And I’m sure Steve will be so thrilled anyway. I can see he already likes you enough. He doesn’t trust people so easily like he does to you. Most of the time he will run away as fast as he can if he doesn’t feel safe around strangers, Stevie is intuitive like that.“
Tony was pretty sure his heart just swelled in pride. “S-Sure, yeah. I’d like that very much. So, like, numbers exchange? So you can send me your address and time? Promise I’ll be there on time.”
“Smooth, but alright,” Bucky chuckled, fishing out his phone to exchange his number with Tony.
“It’s a date, then,” Tony said casually when he pressed save button for Bucky’s number on his phone, but froze when he saw Bucky raised his eyebrow, realization of what he just said. “I mean, like, with family. So it’s a family date? Dinner? No? Alright, sorry, didn’t mean to say that.”
“Tony, calm down. You look like you’re about to burst into fire like that,” the brunet chuckled, shifting Steve on his arm. Cheeks flushed red a little. “It can be a family date if you want. We - well, I - I’d like to know more about you.”
“...really?”
Bucky nodded, and it was Tony’s turn to blush as he gave his charming smile.
“It’s a family date, then.”

Snippet, The Mythos Trials
A/N: Because if you want to put a ballroom masquerade scene in your story, you find a way to make it happen.
Phenex moved through the crowd with them, exchanging curt greetings with the guests as they went by, the slight twitching of his head telling Gwen he was keeping his eyes open for trouble. After all, that was the whole purpose behind the ball to begin with; to draw either Lucas or Reeves—or both—out of hiding.
Still, as she downed a glass of apple punch, Gwen couldn’t help but feel sorry for the unsuspecting guests. If things went badly, they were likely to get caught in the crossfire.
We’ll just have to hope it doesn’t come to that, she resolved, setting the empty glass on the table.
Her gaze travelled around the room, at the myriad guests with aquatic fins and flippers, to those bearing horns and hooves and long, flopping ears. Most of the guests were bipedal, though there were more than a few of the four legged variety mingling here and there. Nearly everyone was cast in warm, golden light from the floating lights, all deeply engrossed in either food, drink, or conversation.
“Anything yet?”
She gave a start when Phenex spoke, following his gaze to Forneus.
Forneus shook his head. “It’s been difficult, keeping it subtle. But I’m not picking up anything out of the ordinary.”
It took Gwen a moment to realize what they were talking about, a slight tingle going through the soles of her feet in a steady rhythm. She’d almost forgotten that Forneus could use electric pulses through the ground to sense anything from danger lurking nearby, to whether a person was lying or not. It was a handy gift, but one that must’ve required a great deal of concentration, as it seemed to Gwen he didn’t use it very often.
Just then the trill of a violin started up, followed by the melodious harmony of several others, cellos and a whole assortment of instruments Gwen couldn’t pick out from one another once they began in earnest.
“An orchestra?” she said, glancing around in a vain attempt to spot it among the gathering party-goers.
“Of course,” Forneus said, extending a hand to her. “What good is a ball without a little music? Care for a dance?”
Gwen could feel herself blushing, the corners of her mouth curling into a shy smile of its own volition.
She was just accepting his hand when another came to rest on top of hers, a familiar golden tan.
“May I cut in?”
It was hard to say who was more shocked; Gwen, or Forneus. Phenex’s mouth quirked into a grin, his eyes dancing with mischief as he took her hand in his.
“Um, okay. Sure,” she stammered, her face growing hotter. She shot Forneus a surprised look, earning a chuckle from him as Phenex led her away to the centre of the room, where others had already begun swaying to the music.
“Relax Gwen, I’m not going to bite you,” Phenex chuckled, his breath warm against her cheek.
“I…I’m not really good at dancing.” It wasn’t exactly a lie, but neither was it the whole truth. Feeling her pulse jumping at the base of her throat, she tried to steady her breaths, afraid he would notice.
Yes, because the blush isn’t a dead giveaway, or anything.
“It’s okay, just follow my lead.” Phenex placed both hands on her waist, his touch so gentle she could barely feel it through the taffeta of her gown.
Tentatively, Gwen reached up, encircling her arms around his neck, doing her utmost to keep her touch as light as his. “I’m actually kind of surprised,” she admitted, finding she was unable to look at him when they were this close.
“What, did you think Forneus was the only one who’d learned ballroom dancing over the centuries?” Phenex asked, his tone light and teasing.
Gwen suppressed a giggle. “No, it’s not that. I just thought,” she cast around for a reason, her face burning again. “I just didn’t think you’d want to.”
“Well, since I’m here, I may as well play the part, right?” He dropped his voice to a whisper, his breath warm against her ear. “Besides, after all the work Nanri put into getting you dolled up, it would be insulting not to show you off to this crowd.”
“And show them what, exactly?” Gwen laughed, allowing him to lead her in a slow circle. “How I’m about as graceful as an elephant in a china shop?”
“I think the word you were looking for is ‘bull’,” Phenex replied, grinning. “And don’t sell yourself short. You’re doing better than you—ow!”
Gwen winced, removing her foot from his. “Sorry,” she said, smothering a giggle. “I told you I’m not very good at this.”
Phenex released a huff of laughter, his breath causing a few loose tendrils of hair to tease her neck. “Lucky for you, I heal fast. Just try not to break anything, okay?” He pulled her closer so that she was forced to rest her head against his collarbone. “Broken toes are some of the worst for healing.”
Gwen paid less attention to the words themselves than the rumble through his chest when he said them, warmth filling her cheeks in a near-constant blush. This close, she could smell the subtle aroma of whatever cleaning agent the servants had used on his tux, intermingling with the tangy warmth of cinnamon. Was this Phenex’s natural scent?
The thought alone made her face burn hotter, and in that moment, she was glad she was so close to Phenex that he couldn’t see the effect he was having on her. Silence fell between them, with only the chatter of the guests and the sweet, symphonic notes of the orchestra drifting over them. Gwen concentrated on the music, listening to the rise and swell of the violins, the jaunty way they sang and then dipped into slow, melancholy notes that filled her chest with a bittersweet ache.
“It sounds so sad,” she murmured. “I wonder what it’s about.”
By this time she was so lost in the music, she’d begun to relax in Phenex’s embrace, the movements that had seemed impossible to follow before becoming second-nature as he guided them through a slow, continuous twirl.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve heard it,” he said, nearly startling Gwen from her reverie. “But I think it was inspired by one of Apollo’s many failed romances. You know, before the High Council was formed and he realized love between gods and mortals would forever end in heartache.”
“That’s awful.”
She felt Phenex shrug, slightly disrupting the warmth of his hand against the small of her back. “Unfortunately, that’s just the way it is. Gods can live forever, so long as no one equal in power tries to take them out. Humans, on the other hand…” He trailed off, a slight strain in his voice.
Gwen barely noticed. The hopelessness of her own feelings settled over her, a lump sticking in her throat. If love between gods and mortals had ended so tragically, then there really wasn’t any hope for her, was there?
Not that she really had hoped to begin with. And yet, she was disappointed just the same, guilt and despair tangling together as thoughts of Astral intruded on her moment with Phenex; a cruel reminder of how fickle the heart could be.
It isn’t real, she told herself. None of it. It’s just a ruse, remember? Whatever you’re feeling…whatever you think he’s feeling…it’s just the music. Once it’s done, you’ll see. Things will go right back to the way they were, the way they always have been. And when this is all over, you’ll never…
Gwen swallowed, banishing the thought before it could fully take form. At that moment, she would have given anything not to feel at all.
As if sensing her distress, Phenex gave her a sudden, speedy twirl, nearly lifting her feet off the ground. Gwen let out a little squeak of surprise.
Phenex laughed. “Cheer up, will you? Apollo’s been happy enough in recent years, if you hadn’t noticed,” he declared, clearly having misinterpreted her sadness. “And once the Spectrum’s back to normal, he’ll have all the company he could ever want—philanderer that he is.”
Gwen tried to smile, but it felt false, the corners of her mouth too tight to really mean it.
“Don’t make me tickle you.”
The threat had the desired effect. Gwen stiffened slightly, pushing away from him just enough to look up at him. “You wouldn’t dare.” She smiled in spite of herself, genuinely this time.
“That’s more like it,” Phenex said, chuckling. Holding her close once more, they resumed their dance.
Gwen lost all sense of time, the music continuing on in a melodious cadence that wrapped around her and filled her up inside with warmth, the dizzying motion of the dance, slow as it was, creating a sudden rush of euphoria. All of her senses seemed to be in overload. Sounds were louder and more beautiful; colours were more vibrant, the scent of cinnamon and the savoury aroma from the buffet filling the air. The feel of Phenex’s arms around her, so warm and comforting…
All too soon, their dance reached its end, the reality of why they were really there hitting her like a douse of cold water. Phenex gently disengaged from her, his expression suddenly alert.

Life tried to go back to normal. At least, whatever normal had been before. It wasn't working. It had been days, close to a week. No one was doing anything. The food staff wasn't coming in on time, or at all, from what Campbell heard. Garbage was rotting on the roadsides. Campbell tried to go out and do what he could; it was what Cassandra would have wanted, and it kept his mind occupied, but it was just too much. The last job he'd had according to the charts had been clean up, but people were making messes faster than the messes could be managed.
Most days, Campbell ended up as Cassandra's grave. He'd clean away the leaves and dirt, make sure the candles were lit, and check for vandalism. No one had dared to do anything. Probably because Campbell stayed and tried to get his head clear. He couldn't talk to her, not yet, but just feeling close to her was enough to soothe some of the terrible ache in his chest. Elle was one of the few people actually going to work, and Harry was holed up in his house, so it wasn't like Campbell could distract himself with them. Even when Elle was home, it was like there was some wall between them. She slept in her own room and barely spoke. Well, maybe it was grief. Everyone processed it differently. And now, everyone seemed on edge. Stressed out. Suspicious. It was hard enough to deal with when it was a freak accident, but now there was a murderer in their midst. Campbell couldn't blame Elle for needing some time to think things through, so he went about his work and figured she'd talk to him when she was ready. Besides. It gave him time to try and get his mood under control. Not that it was working well. The smallest things felt like mountains, and little shit he hadn't cared about before set him off; he'd kept his fists to himself so far, but only because Campbell redirected his anger. Someone ran into him at lunch one day, and Campbell ended up putting a hole in the drywall of the hallway because he just wanted to make something break. At home, he tried to make breakfast but it had burned, and he'd ended up throwing the plate against a wall. "I'm sorry," Campbell said when Elle rushed in to see what had happened. "I'll clean it up. I just..." But he couldn't finish that sentence. There was no excuse, so what was the point in trying to make one? He shouldn't have done it. Elle said nothing. She brought him a broom, and Campbell cleaned up the mess as promised. They ate breakfast in silence, hugged at the door, and went about their days. Campbell hadn't even gotten to work, though, when his phone rang. Dillon was on the other end of the line, his voice strained. "Hey, Campbell? You told me to contact you if I noticed anything weird with Harry." "Yeah?" "Something's weird. He's just laying out by the pool. Kelly came to see him and she left looking pissed. He hasn't moved in hours." "I'll be there." Campbell hung up the phone and changed route. This was a mess, too, and a far more urgent one than hauling food scraps to the dump. Dillon let him inside and gestured to the pool, his expression more than a little concerned. Campbell went alone. Harry was laying on his stomach, hand in the pool water and tracing shapes in the dark green water; there was a scum forming on the surface of the water, and garbage floating in it. Disgusting. "You're gonna get a disease from that water," Campbell said, using the toe of his shoe to tap at the bottom on Harry's foot. "Get out of there." Harry rolled over and sat up. His pupils were huge, and the smile he gave Campbell was a little too sedate. "Two visitors in one day. Lucky me." "What are you on?" "I don't remember." Campbell sighed and grabbed Harry by the arm, hauling him up and sitting him on a pool chair. "You can't do this, Harry." He brushed the dirty off Harry's face and clothes. "You can't keep getting fucked up and letting yourself drown." "Why not? Maybe I should." "Do you honestly mean that?" "I dunno. Maybe." Sitting down, Campbell let Harry lean against him. "Do you really feel like killing yourself? Be serious with me." He stroked Harry's back when Harry gave a tiny, quick nod. "Alright. Look, you're coming back to the house with me. Just for a few days. There's the guest room left over, and you're taking it." If Harry had been planning to argue again, he decided not to. Campbell didn't know much on how to help people, but he knew that back when he wanted to hurt himself, it was Harry and Cassandra who help keep him going. Being around a bunch of snippy people cluttering up his space wouldn't make Harry feel better. Campbell followed Harry back inside and helped him gather some of his things; it was more than a few days worth, and Campbell wondered if Harry already had a hunch that he wouldn't be coming back any time soon. Before they left, Harry stopped by his sister's room and picked up a framed photo of the two of them, and a weird stuffed toy. "She loved those goddamn Ugly Dolls. I got it for her for her birthday," Harry mumbled. "It was her favorite thing." "Don't talk like she's dead, okay?" "What if she is?" Campbell shook his head. There was nothing he could say, because he had no idea what was true or not, and trying to convince Harry that everything would be fine was a waste of breath. All he could do was take him back to the house and help him unpack. The guest room was downstairs and overlooked the garden; it was quiet and beautiful, and with any luck it'd bring Harry some sort of peace. The one thing that concerned Campbell in all of this was Elle. He hadn't asked her about letting Harry move in, but she'd been supportive before of Campbell trying to help him. Elle came home not too long after, with a few other girls walking with her. Campbell was sitting on the front steps, waiting, and preparing in his head some big long speech about what was going on and why Harry needed to be there. "Is everything okay?" Elle asked, tilting her head as she approached. "You look worried." Campbell stood and came over to kiss her on the hair. "I am, a little. Harry's been having a rough time, so I told him he could stay with us for a few days." "Oh. Well, we have the room." "We do." "It should be good, right? Will it help you, having a friend around?" It was a good question. Campbell had only known that if Harry killed himself, Campbell would be out two of the three most important people in his life. He couldn't just let that happen. But Elle was right. Campbell had been a mess, and the idea of Harry being close did make him feel a bit more comforted. "Yeah, I think so." "I'm glad." Elle kissed his cheek. "I should go say hi, then." Thankfully, the two seemed to get along once they actually shared the same space for more than five minutes. Harry, when he was alone and away from obnoxious so-called friends, was quiet and placating; Elle was introverted, but kind. Campbell made dinner while they kept him company, and once Harry lowered his guard and sobered up a bit, it was the first nice evening Campbell could remember having since Cassandra died. But then Campbell noticed something... odd. Elle was avoiding him. Campbell had brushed it off as being upset, before, but as the first week of chaos oozed into week two it became obvious that something was off. She slept in her own room, spoke less, and took more shifts to the point that she was only home in the evenings. She flinched sometimes, or would give him a strange look that almost was appraising. Like she was trying to decide something, but couldn't figure it out. Was it because of his behavior? Campbell considered it, and decided it had to be. He knew he'd been more moody lately, but he had tried hard to make sure he hadn't hit any walls or thrown anything. Still. Had he scared her? Campbell went to work and mulled it over, and decided he'd talk to Elle that night; if something was wrong, it'd be better to get it out in the open sooner rather than later, wouldn't it? He knew there were rumors going around that he'd killed Cassandra, or knew who did. Kyle, apparently grateful for the wheelchair ramps that had sprung up around town after Campbell's suggestion, had let him in on that not-so-secret secret. Emily was friends with Gwen and Lexie, and she'd told him the two had been whispering about it. Elle worked with Emily and Lexie in the kitchen sometimes. It was a little suspicious. But Elle believed him. Didn't she? "Do you think I'm capable of murder?" Campbell asked Harry when he got back home, bringing Harry a cup of tea. "Honest answers, please." Harry was wrapped up in a blanket, huddled in bed still with a five-day shadow. He sipped the tea, considering, then shook his head. "Come here." "What?" "Come here. Come on." Campbell flopped into bed next to Harry, startled when Harry tossed half of the blanket over him. "What are you doing?" "Trust me. Just stay there for a few minutes." It was stuffy, but some combination of darkness and the weight of the blanket helped Campbell relax a little. He didn't remember feeling tired, but Campbell woke up a bit later, groggy but far less jittery than he'd felt before. Crawling out from the blankets, Campbell blinked at Harry, who was laying next to him and staring up at the ceiling. "Is that why you're in here all day?" Campbell wondered. "You're tired?" "A little. I feel tired all the time. My body hurts. But also, I just don't want to be conscious, so sleeping takes care of that." "Ever considered trading in the partying for an antidepressant?" "Sometimes." Campbell sat there for a moment, watching Harry. He wanted to offer some sort of comfort, but he didn't know how. Instead, he got up and headed to the kitchen to make dinner before Elle got home. Boxed mac and cheese wasn't anything super fancy, but Harry liked it, and he needed to eat; it didn't need to be fancy, it just had to have calories. Campbell made some frozen vegetables to go on the side. He knew they should go eat at the cafeteria like Cassandra had wanted for everyone. If he could just get Harry back on his feet... Elle came through the door a little bit after everything was ready. "Hey," she greeted. "That smells good. I smuggled home dessert." Dessert was, as it turned out, Twinkies that Elle had snagged when no one was looking. Not an honest move, but it seemed to boost morale with all three of them, so who could complain? Campbell poked around at his food while Elle and Harry discussed what was going on outside. It was nights like this that Campbell wondered if he was imagining things. Everything appeared to be normal. Happy,  calm. After dinner, Elle took a shower and was doing her night routine when Campbell wandered in, hoping she was in a good enough mood to talk a little. "How was today?" "Weird. Bad." Elle rubbed some sort of serum on her face. Turning around, she leaned against the sink and crossed her arms over her chest. "Do you know Brandon?" "Eggles? I had to knock a lot of sense into that one. He's a loser. What did he do?" "He was walking around today with a gun hanging out of his pants, like it was no big deal." Campbell stepped closer and settled on the counter next to her. She looked down at the floor, but not before Campbell saw the taut expression on her face. "You're scared of him." "We all are. Shit, Campbell, we're scared of everyone. People have been walking around in packs. A bunch of us walk together at night now, and we're always looking over our shoulder. It's terrifying." "You could have called me to come get you." "I didn't want to bother you." Since when would it have bothered him? Campbell held his tongue, because he knew before he asked that he hadn't been the best company since the shooting. "I know I've been irritable lately, and I'm sorry. I'm not dealing with the loss. But I can't lose you too, Elle. Let me protect you." "That's such a guy thing to say." "Look, don't be that way. It's not a bother to walk you home. I promise I won't let anything bad happen to you." Elle pushed off the counter and brushed past him to go out the door. He followed, but she always kept a few paces ahead of him, and moved so that the bed was between them. "You can't promise me that," she said. Her eyes held a cold sort of anger he'd never seen from anyone before. "You can't promise me something like that, unless you know something I don't." "What does that mean?" "Some of the girls were talking, and--" "Everyone in this town talks!" he interrupted, his voice rising. Campbell took a breath and forced himself to speak calmly. "They all accuse me of shit, they always have. You know I didn't do it. You said you believed me." "I had to lie for you." "So what? I told you what happened." "You were with me all night. That's what I'll tell them if people start poking around. You were with me when it happened, so you couldn't have pulled the trigger." Campbell felt his stomach drop. "But?" "You've been acting strange, Campbell. It worries me." And there it was. Campbell tried to find something to say, some words that would convince her completely, but he knew there weren't any. He could see it on her face that someone had said something. Someone had turned her against him, or tried to. And wasn't it his own fault, for it being so easy to believe? "Elle, I promise you, I had nothing to do with what happened." Elle stared at him, then seemed to deflate. She pushed her face into her hands, and let out an unsteady sigh. "I need to go to bed. I'm really tired." "Hey." This time, when he stepped forward, Elle didn't move away. Campbell curled his arms around her and gently kissed her temple. "Let's go out and get lunch tomorrow, okay? Just you and me. We can talk about this once you've had some sleep." She nodded, leaning against him for a moment before pulling away and going to her room. Campbell lay in his own bed, eyes trained on the ceiling as he tried to convince himself to sleep. There had to be a way to fix this. Maybe if he just found someone else to talk to... Harry wasn't an option, and neither was Sam. He had no right going to Sam and exoect mental health advice. But maybe Grizz? Grizz seemed level headed, and maybe he knew some way to get better. Not that it'd do much good, if Elle didn't want to fix things. But after a long, sleepless night, and a long morning of getting Harry comfortable and fed, Elle showed up from her morning work shift right at lunch. She was waiting by the cafeteria door, and she smiled faintly when Campbell arrived. They didn't say much. At least, not until they got to their table. Once they sat down and got comfortable, both of them tried to talk at once. "You first," Campbell offered. Elle toyed with her little carton of milk. She tried to to open it, but of course they never opened quite right. "I just remember what Cassandra said, when we had the meeting with just us girls. And Blake," she added. Blake had come out as genderqueer the year before. "And saying it was just a matter of time before someone got raped. But you know, she got murdered instead. And I just... Nothing feels safe anymore." "And I made that worse." "Honestly? Yeah." "Do you really think that I'd ever hurt you?" "How am I supposed to know? You've beaten other people up. I mean how long is it before you..." Elle trailed off, stabbing her knife into her milk carton and prying it open. She didn't have to finish that sentence. He knew what she was thinking. "I just don't want to be scared." "Is there anything I can do to fix this? I can read some self-help books, or something. I can leave for a few days." "Leave?" "Until I get my shit together again. I can do it." Campbell knew how it sounded. He knew I'll change I swear and just give me another chance usually never worked out, but what other option was there? It wasn't to late. He'd always thought that he'd done pretty damn good, all things considered, but he could be better. "I want to be better, for you." Elle started to reply, when a loud bang rang out through the cafeteria and people began to scream. Campbell dove at Elle and snatched her wrist, pulling her under the table. He couldn't see what was happening, but he could hear two voices yelling. Their best bet was to figure a way out and run. But it was an open area, and he didn't know if the shooter was between them and the exits or not. Was it worth the risk of getting shot? Suddenly, the fire alarm went off. A horrible move. There was a stampede as everyone rushed towards the doors. Campbell covered Elle as best as he could as a wave of people rushed by; they tucked into a ball on their sides, and Campbell covered Elle's head. Once there was a safe opening, they both bolted out from under the table and made a break for it. He kept a hold of her so they wouldn't get separated; there was an exit out the staff room that most people didn't know about, and Campbell led them out through it. They made it outside and kept running until they reached home. "Fuck," Elle gasped at they stopped in the front yard. Campbell had never heard her curse much, but Elle was shaking hard and clinging to his shirt as a long string of expletives followed the first. "This can't keep fucking happening." Campbell held her tight, stroking her back. "No, it can't. Are you hurt?" "No, I'm okay. Just pissed." "Would you be okay staying here with Harry? I need to go find Allie and Sam." "Yeah. Text me." Kissing her hair, Campbell waited for her to get inside and lock the door before heading out on his own. Where are you, he texted to Sam. Are you and Allie okay? Sam answered within the minute. Everyone's safe. We're home. Are you okay? Is Elle okay? We're just shaken up. Where are you? Heading over. Campbell locked his phone before Sam could text back and tell him not to show up. He had to talk to Allie, now, before things got any worse. Something had to be done to get the town back on track. Of course she would be grieving, he understood that, but there'd be more dead to bury soon if someone didn't take control. Knocking on the door of Cassandra's... Allie's home, Campbell was surprised when Grizz opened the door. "Where's Allie?" "Not a good time, Campbell." "And it won't be for a while. Seriously, let me talk to her." "About?" "About who's taking over for Cassandra. As much as I love the whole Survivor vibe going on out there, it's going to get people killed." Grizz frowned. He glanced over his shoulder, and Campbell could see Luke, Sam, and some others sitting at a table behind him. "We've been talking about that, actually." Stepping outside, Grizz closed the door behind him and lowered his voice. "Finding someone to take over and enforce the rules." "Yeah? And who have you come up with?" "Nobody. The only ones here who actually know what they're doing would just have a big target on their back anyways. You know what this town is like. No one's gonna listen to Will or Gordie. Don't suppose you know anyone who'd be interested?" The problem was image, and social context. Wheels started turning in his head, dark thoughts dancing along them. Campbell had ideas that Cassandra had never gotten around to implementing, things he could get done, but he'd need a pretty face to present them to the crowd. Harry would have been ideal for that, but Harry was too low and he would be challenged for sure. Why Harry? What right did he have to step in? The only way Harry would get in would be if he got on his feet and looked like an ideal alternative. It was clear who should take over, for the time being; if she sunk the ship, it'd be all too easy for Campbell to arrange things to his liking. And if she did a good job, well, there'd be no need to interfere. Either way, win. "Allie," Campbell said. "It has to be Allie." Grizz walked over and herded Campbell a few paces away from the house. He leaned closer, whispering. "Do you think she'll go for it? I mean, we all know that Cassandra was the serious one. Allie's just... different." "She won't want to, but she has to. It makes sense for her to. If anyone else tries to grab for power right now, it'll just be a bloodbath. If she steps up, she has a reason to. She's shadowed Cassandra enough, she knows how things go. People will pity her. That'll last just long enough for her to get her feet under her." "How do we convince her?" "Do you know anything about anger management?" Grizz scratched his head. "Wait, what does that have to do with anything?" After Campbell just stood there tapping his foot, Grizz tossed his hands up in the air a bit. "Yeah, yeah. I guess. I mean, I had some social stuff growing up I had to learn on my own. I was really into Jung for a while. Why?" "She'll take the idea better from you guys anyways, so I'll tell you how to convince her if you help me figure out how to deal with all this shit before I lose Elle." "Who says you're gonna lose Elle?" "The hole I punched in the wall at school." "Oh. Oh, well, uh. I can try. Yeah. Yeah, I'll do it." "Fantastic." Campbell peered up at the house to make sure no one was listening through any of the windows. "Cassandra wasn't just her sister. She was everything. When Sam got sick, me, I got anger and bitter. Allie got protective. Allie would have given anything, done anything. She would have traded her own life for Cassandra. Use that sense of duty." "That feels so underhanded." "In case you haven't noticed, underhanded is my thing." Rubbing the back of his neck, Grizz sighed. "Why do I feel like I just shook hands with the devil?" Campbell smiled. "I'll talk to you soon?" Grizz gave him a tiny mock salute before retreating into the house. Sam was coming to the door just as Grizz was trying to go in; they looked at each other a moment, and Campbell smirked at the little blush that came over them both as they scooted past each other. Cute. "What?" Sam signed, catching the amusement on Campbell's face. "Stop that." "Nothing. I was just going. Happy you didn't get trampled, bro." "Don't go. I miss you. I don't want something bad to happen, and have this be the last we remember of each other." "And I don't want that either, Sam." Campbell kicked at a little patch of grass. Might as well explain as best as he could, before one of them got shot next. "But I did what I did to try and keep you safe, okay? I get it. I do. But we've always butted heads, and I think it's better for you if we keep our distance a bit longer. I want to keep you safe from me." "That's fine." Not what Campbell expected to hear, but the look on Sam's face-- calm, determined-- seemed to say he meant it. "Take whatever time you need. I understand. But I'm not asking to come back home. I just want to be able to see you. You're the only brother I have." "And you're not worried I'm some killer?" Campbell scoffed when Sam didn't reply. Really? Here they were, having the you're my only brother talk, and the kid couldn't even say he thought Campbell was innocent? "Right. Figures." He started to walk away, but arms wrapped around him from behind; Sam hugged him hard, burrowing his cheek against Campbell's back. Campbell turned, hugging Sam back. When they pulled away, Sam looked sadder than Campbell had remembered seeing him in a while. Campbell ruffled Sam's hair; Sam went back inside without another word. Campbell watched his back for a moment before turning towards home. Small steps forward were better than nothing.

This is a scene from my superhero universe. I had it in my head from the beginning. It’s look at the future of our main couple, which doesn’t really fit anywhere in the main story right now
It was quite a change of pace.
Sara glared at her boyfriend who was completely fitted in his Thunderbird super suit. Sara in contrast was dressed, very uncharacteristically, in a very cute romper complete with flats. She had even deigned to add extensions to her hair so that it was 4 inches longer.
Of course, Gwen was responsible for the outfit and her hair. In fact, she was just walking back to her place from Gwen’s house when she had heard the unmistakable sound of a fight coming from the alleyway up the block. She wasn’t exactly surprised to turn the corner to see her boyfriend just finishing up a fight with a handful of thugs, lip split from a what she could only guess was an extremely lucky shot.
Normally this wouldn’t bother in the slightest. Patrolling was one of her favourite things to do, patrolling with her boyfriend was even better. And getting into a fight? Letting off some much needed steam? Feeling the blood pumping in her veins.
Normally, it would take her five seconds to put on her own suit and join him. Normally, she would have already been with him because they would have gone out together.
However, today was not a normal day.
Today, Sara was at Gwen’s house letting her friend dress her up like a little doll because alone she had no idea how to get ready for a date on her own. Today, she had to talk her friend down from a skin tight bodycon dress and a full face of make up only to get mascara in her eye and extensions tugging on her hair.
Today, she was rushing home because the whole process took way longer than she thought it would and she felt badly making her boyfriend wait out in the cold Canadian Winter.
Right now, it was 10 minutes after the were suppose to meet up and her boyfriend was beating up thugs in a alley. Without her.
Sara’s jovial expression was unusual but totally justified. Asher’s expression of sheepish surprise was also unusual, but nearly contrite enough for the situation.
This was supposed to be their first nice, somewhat fancy date together. And as much as Sara loved the dates they have already gone on: the quiet time alone during a stakeout, the thrill of fighting together and working perfectly as a team, Sara also valued variety in her life.
She just wanted to try something new. Something just as fun, maybe a little bit more formal. At least for them.
It hurts a little to see the amount of effort she put into it and the complete lack of effort he put in return.
Still, she knew her obsessive, crime hating, justice loving boyfriend better than anyone. She really should have expected this.
Before Asher could open his mouth to apologize. Because that was exactly what he was about to do, the pair heard distant screams coming from the street behind them.
Sara instantly let go of her plans for the night. She may be angry about her night being disrupted, by she wasn’t going to ignore citizens who needed her help either.
Sara allowed herself one last glare at Asher, promising herself that she would bring this up later, and the two ran down the street.
It didn’t take them long to find the commotion. People were running through the streets, jostling each other in their haste to get away from whatever had spooked them. It was later in the evening so the amount of people running wasn’t as populated as it might have been during midday. Still, Sara knew injuries from the stampeding citizens was still very much a danger.
It seemed that Asher had the same thought she did. She tried to calm those around her while also trying to gain information as to what was going on. She heard Asher’s voice speaking up as well, but of course he was dressed in his superhero suit and she was not which meant that people actually listened to him.
“Get out of the streets” he advised. “Get in a building.”
They still had no idea what exactly was going on. While the people deigned to listen to the well known superhero, none of them had stopped long enough to explain what was going on. But the streets were mostly empty and Sara would much rather them be safe and away then stay to give information and risk their lives. And she was very sure that they were about to find out was going on very soon anyway.
On que a very large figure appeared over the edge of a large skyscraper. He hauled himself over the edge. His hands left visible dents into the cement. He stood on the roof and leaped clearing the expanse of the roof and free falling over the other side.
He didn’t seem concerned as he fell with a startling speed and his harsh landing created a small crater in the middle of the road. He seemed to notice the couple for the first time and his face lit up. “You!” He boomed, his voice made Sara wince a little. He didn’t seem scared to stumble on on the city's first hero, in fact, he seemed delighted. “I know you. You’re that Thunderbird guy.”
Asher had his electric sticks ready, but he stayed silent. Thunderbird wasn’t really known for his witty banter. Not like Sara Strong was, but Sara decided to stay silent. She wasn’t the most subtle of heroes, but even she could admit engaging with someone while not in her suit was probably a bad idea.
The  man seemed to be talking to himself now. “ I was really excited for this part,” he said, his voice much lower. “I knew it would happen eventually. But i didn’t think it would happen so soon.” He pounded his fists together, giddy. “ I can’t believe I get to kill you today.”
Asher tensed slightly, but Sara just sighed loudly. Which of course brought his attention to her.
If was possible, his grin only grew.
“What’s this?” He asked. “You brought your innocent little girlfriend with you? You should have left her at home.”
In a blink of an eye, the man had leapt forward and grabbed Sara. In another blink, the man had lept back to his original spot. He gripped Sara by her shoulders, lifting her off the ground and holding her very tightly.
For the most part, the man ignored her. Launching immediately into the classic new villain monologue. He gave whatever ridiculous name he had given himself, Sara forget it almost immediately, and he spent some time talking about how the world had taken so much from him and he’s make everyone pay. Blah. Blah. Blah blah blah blah.
He didn’t notice how unconcerned Thunderbird seemed, although he was racing to figure out a way to quickly take this guy down before Sara had to do anything, or how the small figure in hss arms seemed to get angrier and angrier rather than the usually reaction of shaking in fear.
Asher saw the exact moment Sara lost her patience. And he guessed what she was going to right before she did. He stopped planning on how to get out of the situation and started planning on how to do some damage control.
On her part Sara knew it was a bad idea. But she also, knew that no one had ever expected to her make the most sound choices in the heat of the moment.
Sara spoke up.
“You know,” she said. “I haven’t had the best day. So I’m going give you one chance to let me go and turn yourself in before I hurt.”
The man started to laugh, but his laughter broke off as his tight hold started to break on the young girl. He pressed down harder, sure that the delicate little thing would be crushed in his hands.
Instead, his hands started to raise on their own as she pushed her arms out. The man strained, gritting his teeth. But Sara broke free and landed lightly on her feet.
Sara smiled at him and hopped in place a little. “I’m a little stronger then I look,” she told him. “Your powers are pretty cool, but,” she leaned in conspiratorially. “I think I’m stronger than you.”
The punch launched the man into the air and then into a crumpled heap on the ground. The following fight was quick and not altogether too brutal, considering the flared temper Sara had to start it. She quickly subdued him and handed the man off to the proper authorities.
She tried not to worry too much about what he had seen. It may have been really obvious that she was Ms. Strong, but Sara Strong was still an anonymous high school student.
By the end, Sara was glaring at Asher again.
“Sara, I’m sorry. I should never have even put on my suit.”
Sara tried to hold to a little bit of her anger. But it wasn’t really effective. She was really wired that way. Sara was just in general a happy and passionate person. She was quick to anger sometimes, and her anger often burned hot, but it just as often burned out as quickly as it came.
“Well, I know you,” she admitted. “So I shouldn’t be too surprised. And I guess it was a good thing we were both here.”
Asher looked relieved.
She grinned at him and shrugged. “And it was pretty fun too.”
Asher put his arm around her and held her close. “I like being around you,” he confessed. “It doesn’t matter what we do to me.”
Sara hugged him back. She stood on the tips on her toes so she could press her lips against his briefly.
“I like being around you too.” She said stepping back from him. He pressed a kiss to her hair.
“But we’re still going out tonight,” she said a moment later.
“We are?” Asher asked, but he didn’t sound too surprised .
“Yeah,” Sara insisted. “That took like 20 minutes. We can still find something to do. Even if we’ll miss our reservations. Which we probably would have missed anyway, “ she said in an aside while glaring at his sweating body still in his suit.
She pushed him away and made chop chop motions with her hand. “Hurry up,” she said. “We’ll go back to your lair. You take a shower and get changed and i’ll find something for us to do. I refuse to have gotten dressed in this,” and here she gestured to her own outfit, “for nothing.”

On Lorde, Green Light and how I refound my love for pop music
I’m in love with Lorde’s new single. I’m in love with Lorde herself, really. To me, she’s an immensely strong wave of fresh air bursting through the pop genre. A genre that, if we’re honest, we all adore, but are too afraid to admit. We call Britney’s Toxic a guilty pleasure, but really, do we actually feel guilty? No. We know it’s an anthem, it’s a legendary song and we all love it and we all know it.
But somewhere around age 13, when the hormones started kicking in and we wanted to impress the boys in 9th grade, we felt the pressure to be different. Different from other girls, because girls are superficial creatures obsessed with fake things like makeup and Lady GaGa. We weren’t allowed to like pop music, because it wasn’t real music. And so we all went through a post-punk or emo or grunge phase, because those bands had men in them, and men made real music about deep stuff - not to discredit that phase, the bands I listened to around age 14 shaped me in ways I will never forget.
And then we were shamed for that too - because we didn’t like that music for the music, we were just in love with the singer with the incredibly sharp jawline or the bassist with the huge arms. Personally, I felt like I wasn’t allowed to just be passionate about music, because my passion would never seem real to the scrawny, penis-bearing, acne-struck creatures that were always a little too loud in class.
Then I heard a song on the radio. It was definitely pop music, but it was different, the kind of different I’d been looking for since I found out my taste in things wasn’t good enough. Through Royals, I found out that pop music wasn’t a defined genre, it didn’t have to be “fake” or “superficial”, it was something able to engage with other genres and create something new. And it could be about real things - it didn’t have to be about trashing hotelrooms, diamond watches and jet planes. Rowan Blanchard put it into words perfectly last week: it was when I realized pop music could be poetry too. There’s always the Art Bros telling girls that pop music isn’t real, but Lorde’s music made us feel like this was for us. It was made for us to enjoy and not be shamed for.
This made me fall in love with pop music and female musicians all over again. I discovered a few things during this phase. First, pop music is art. Pop songs are incredibly well-constructed works of art that appeal to people because of their universal meaning. While the Art Bros in 9th grade thought this to be superficial, I think it’s brilliant. When someone writes something that manages to speak to people of all ages and cultures, they’ve made something very special. Second of all, genres are bullshit. I found out that every artists is influenced by dozens of different bands and artists, even by art that isn’t music. I found out that within pop, there were tons of artists who borrowed from the other genres and artists that I liked and they all had a tiny part of me in their music, it seemed. Because of Lorde, I discovered artists like Grimes, HAIM, Chet Faker, Troye Sivan, Sky Ferreira, MO, James Blake, Banks, London Grammar, Empress Of, Florence + The Machine, and many, many more. The third thing I realized was that female musicians were badass. I fell in love with them like the 13 year old me fell in love with Alex Turner’s skilled hands. I fell in love with Alana Haim, Florence Welch, Jenny Lee Lindberg, and Ellie Rowsell, because they brought a female perspective to their music, which I connected to on a way higher level than I ever did to lyrics by male artists.
Lastly, I refound my love for pop music. I found out that all the artists I loved when I was 11 had worked with producers and songwriters that my favorite indie hipster bands worked with as well, and vice versa. I learned about all the samples from 80s pop that were used in contemporary music and I learned that the instrumental to Rihanna’s Drunk On Love was actually The XX’s hipster-anthem Intro. Lorde’s music had reconnected me to pop music, and I wasn’t gonna call it my guilty pleasure anymore - Nelly Furtado’s Loose was just as much art as alt-J’s An Awesome Wave. I went into kind of a nostalgic phase (during this time, I also watched an extensive amount of Gossip Girl): I dug up songs that had memories attached to them, by Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Shakira, The Pussycat Dolls, Katy Perry, Flo-Rida, Timbaland, Beyoncé, Fergie, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and all the other stuff I knew by heart when I was 8, 9, or 10. I now feel like it doesn’t matter whether a song is real or not, whether a team of professional songwriters, producers and someone who’s very skilled at autotuning were behind it or if it was written by a guy with a guitar in a basement. All that matters is that you connect to it, or that you can have fun while listening to it, that you can dance like crazy to it and make memories to the sound of that song.
I became obsessed with Lorde and listened to her EP on repeat in class and on the bus and at home and I saw myself in her, in her words and sounds. And that was so important to me, because until then, the pop songs I knew were about long lost love, about sex, big parties - great songs, but it was all about stuff that I didn’t relate to at all at age 14. Lorde’s music was about friends, fun, finding romance in the little things. Pure Heroine was the ultimate ode to my life, to being bored, to observing the world around you and to laughing until your ribs get tough. While 5 Seconds Of Summer was singing about how “she looks so perfect”, Lorde told me about her friends with “their skin in craters, like the moon”. It was so refreshing to hear a peer collecting the moments that were pivotal to my childhood and express them in a way I’d never heard before.
I’ve listened to Pure Heroine so much since then, mostly while travelling or doing nothing, and it still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did in 2013. Now that Green Light has come out, I feel like I’m growing up alongside her. I was 14, she was 17 when she released Pure Heroine. It was an album about teenagers and the life they lived, a life I was only just starting to get familiar with. Now I’m 17, and Ella is 21. I moved out of my parents’ house to the biggest city in my country, I’m going to college now, I’m drinking alcohol more often than once a year on NYE, and I’m growing up. Meanwhile, Ella has travelled around the world, became besties with Taylor Swift and was crowned “The Future of Music” by none other than the late David Bowie. It’s a different kind of growing up, but it’s growing nonetheless.
She wrote in a very impressive Facebook post that she “started to discover in a profound, scary, blood-aching way who I was when I was alone, what I did when I did things only for myself. I was reckless and graceless and terrifying and tender. I threw sprawling parties and sat in restaurants until the early hours, learning what it’s like to be an adult, even talking like one sometimes.” Again, I relate to her situation so much, even though we are in completely different situations. I, and I think many people of my age, spend much more time alone than we did in our teenage years. It’s scary and at the same time amazing to discover who you are when you’re like that. And I still feel like Lorde has this amazing connection to her generation, we all have the same feelings of fear and loneliness and euphoria sometimes, and she puts them into music.
So when I heard Green Light, again, it felt like it was about me, like it was written for me. Sure, it’s a song about heartbreak and lost love, but for me, it’s also about letting go who you were, about finding out your true self and not wanting to leave the other you behind just yet. Because it’s scary. She manages to make a song with a theme that’s been a pop cliché since forever feel relatable, accessible, comfortable, which is the biggest strength in her songwriting. Her mind has evolved when it comes to both sound and lyrics, but that essential part of her music has stayed. I can’t wait to hear more.
@lordemusic if you ever read this, thank you so much.
