Lovely fic, the worldbuilding really got me hook, it is background but absolutely fascinating. -Anon
The Lines of your Soul
by athena_crikey
M, 24k, Wangxian & Nielan
Summary: At this point he just wants to get Lan Zhan horizontal so he can sleep off the drugs that are making him make little confused snuffling noises and ask questions like “How soft is purple?” and “Where did the moon go?” and “Why does Wei Ying smile all the time?” Lan Zhan under the influence is cute, and it makes Wei Wuxian genuinely angry because he cannot appreciate it. This is not something Lan Zhan chose, this is not even an accident, this is an intentional violation and none of the sounds or questions or wide-eyed glances Lan Zhan is giving him are his choice.
~*~
Not an easy read, there is a lot of hurt there, but how lwj and wwx behaved in such an awful situation really got to me. -Anon
swallowing rocks, swallowing peach skins
by AvoOwO
M, 24k, Wangxian
Summary: There is an indescribable rage boiling within Lan Wangji's chest. Lan Wangji has often heard stories of unsuspecting travelers being taken from their camp within the night, held against their wills only to be somehow found weeks later, dead and in the most horrid of states. Stories are hard enough to read about. It is worse, he thinks, when it is Wei Ying he is here with, gagged and bound in the same way. They walk, and walk, and walk, and they do not stop.
~*~
Lwj and wwx are just. such disasters. and I loved their jobs, especially lwj. it was a very enjoyable read. -Anon
To See You (Again)
by FrameofMind (@frameofmind6), Jo Lasalle (Jo_Lasalle)
E, 84k, Wangxian
Part of Bottomji Big Bang 2023
Summary: A new job brings Wei Ying to London, and back into Lan Zhan's life. Many things have changed since their time in boarding school (Lan Zhan is out of the closet, arranges charcuterie boards, stocks a fine bar…), but their friendship slots right back into place like no time has passed. Wei Ying is a little perplexed by the fact that Lan Zhan apparently doesn't have any interest in dating anyone despite being an obvious catch—but hey, at least that means he doesn't have to fight anyone for Lan Zhan's time and attention. And besides, it's not like Wei Ying is in any big rush to find himself a girlfriend either. It’s all working out great!

This story is a ton of fun and such a different and interesting concept. @danegen

This series was so much fun, especially watching Lan Wangji's lust for Wei Wuxian from Su She's POV. And I'm grateful the author included a second part so we can see all the bits we missed and how wangxian got together. Also lwj's competency kink for wwx's brilliance was gold. @gentil-minou
💙 The epic college romance between Wei Ying and Lan Zhan
by KizuKatana (@kizukatana)
E, WIP, Series, 57k, Wangxian | Kay's Rec
Summary part one: The (bitter) third party pov of the epic college romance between Wei Ying and Lan Zhan, as told from the pettiest NPC to ever exist. - - - - - A new student transferred into the university in their second year, and Su She was gleeful to see how much Lan Zhan was irritated by him from the very first day that the student (Wei something) showed up late for class with a ratty hoodie pulled up over his head and proceeded to sleep through lecture. Finally, someone else would be the butt of everyone’s jokes as they watched Wei Ying constantly try and fail to get Lan Zhan’s attention. When midterm grades came out, Su She was expecting the guy to be humiliated. That was… not what happened. Worse still, Lan Zhan was now actually turning his head to look at the guy when he spoke. And... wait, was Lan Zhan… putting his hand on the guy’s ass?! No. Su She does not accept this.

I love historical aus and Greaser!WWX with GoldenBoy!LWJ is one we know well, butI love this fic for all the heart it has and the way it covers setting-typical homophobia. Wangxian get a happy ending and then the epilogue at the end really just made me feel all kinds of feelings about being queer. @gentil-minou
Mad about the Boy
by TriviasFolly (@triviasfolly)
M, 62k, Wangxian
Summary: It's 1954, and Lan Zhan's life would be going well if it wasn't for the charming Wei Ying. Did he say charming? He meant annyoing. If it wasn't for that smile Lan Zhan could accept the future planned for him, the job as Cheif Surgeon who returned home to a demure wife who'd cook him dinner and asking him about his day. Instead, he finds himself dreaming about something more. So when Wei Ying offers him a deal, one that would get him out of Lan Zhan's life he took it. When the evening goes wrong, Lan Zhan expects his life to be over. Instead, he finds it's just the start of a new chapter.

The way this author made the story of the Scarlet Pumpenel fit in mdzs is, in my opinion, masterful. The arranged marriage is built on devastating misunderstanding after devastating misunderstanding, but the identity shenanigans are so fun! Other highlights include Jiang sect love and wangxian adopting not only A-Yuan but MXY as well. So much fun and an epic adventure! @gentil-minou
The Scarlet Lotus
by rainbowninja167 (@rainbowtitania)
M, 137k, Wangxian
Summary: In the years following the Sunshot Campaign, the mysterious, masked cultivator who’d defeated Wen Ruohan took on many identities: the Yiling Patriarch, leader of the Wen rebels, enemy of the Jin Sect, practitioner of wicked tricks. His true name was shrouded in mystery. He always wore a mask. He carried no sword; wore no clan colors or insignia. Clouds of resentful energy clung to him as he walked. But there was one thing that absolutely everyone agreed on: the Yiling Patriarch could not possibly be from the Jiang Sect. Or: a Scarlet Pimpernel-inspired fix-it featuring Wei Wuxian in disguise, Lan Wangji determined to bring the nefarious Yiling Patriarch to justice, and the hijinks that ensue when you accidentally marry your greatest enemy/love of your life.
~*~
Another fun and sexy fic built on misunderstandings but I love the tone of this one! There's a lot of heart in this fic along with some real world issues along with just lots of wwx love, which makes this fic something i reread again and again! @gentil-minou
With No Particular Affection
by Chrononautical (@chrononautintraining)
E, 92k, Wangxian
Summary: A prominent physicist and professor, Wei Ying has built a life for himself in Chicago. He's safe, he's happy, and he has plans for his future. Unfortunately, those plans are derailed the moment he finds out his brother is in trouble. To save the family business, it will have to be Wei Ying's life on the line. He has to marry his old high school crush, Lan Zhan.
~*~
wangxian exploring their sexuality while getting to act their age in cloud recesses is such a wonderful premise, and I love the way this fic lets them not being good at it. Also the little excerpts from the book throughout were such fun and always made me giggle! @gentil-minou
Fentao-laoshi's Guide to Cut-Sleeve Pleasures
by occultings (microcomets) (@microcomets)
E, 31k, Wangxian
Part of the good place server exchange 2023
Summary: Lan Wangji says, “I am also looking to . . . gain practical experience. It seemed mutually advantageous.” “Mutually advantageous,” Wei Wuxian echoes. “Wait. Do you mean I’d get to . . . ?” Lan Wangji stares at him. “Practice — on you?” Wei Wuxian finishes, his eyes round with disbelief. — During a shared summer studying in the Cloud Recesses, Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian diligently pursue an informed sexual education. What could possibly be the harm in some mutual learning?
~*~
the most heartbreaking, angsty, canon setting arranged marriage au i've read so far, in the best way. We get to see things from LWJ's pov and while his actions make sense, it's still so devastating as we watch WWX be affected by it all. The happy ending makes the hurt all the better too! @gentil-minou
💙 Concord
by Deastar (@youhideastar)
T, 41k, Wangxian | Kay's Rec
Summary: Lan Wangji hopes, somewhat frivolously, that his betrothed might find him an acceptable companion. Neither he nor Wei Wuxian are able to bear children, so there will be no need to share a marital bed; that should make it easier for the two of them to reach a natural, comfortable equilibrium. Two strings played in harmony: this is Lan Wangji’s quiet hope, as he arranges the Jingshi to accommodate a second inhabitant. Perhaps, he thinks, they might even become friends.
~*~
MothXian and WitchJi!!!!! The art for this au is always so lovely, and this fic fits it perfectly! The author has this gorgeous, dreamy prose that really enhances the setting and the sweetness of wangxian in this is so beautiful. @gentil-minou
light a lantern (and guide me home)
by xuanxuanwo (ostentatiouslyrealistic) (@xuanxuanwo)
T, 63k, Wangxian
Summary: At first, he thinks he’s caught a bird; it’s the size of one of his palms and wrapped fully in damp feathers. As he shuffles toward the beam of light that streams through the open window, he wonders how it managed to fly into his lantern, shut the door, and latch it against the wild gales of the wind. Then, he takes a closer look, thumbing across its feathers, and realizes that they’re not feathers at all. They’re leaves. Startled, Lan Zhan shifts as gently as possible and, using the tip of his finger, parts them to reveal a body, complete with tiny limbs and a small face, all of it wrapped in the dress made from peony petals. “Oh,” Lan Zhan breathes softly, heart clenching. “Oh, what are you?” -- A thunderstorm brings tea master and herbalist Lan Zhan a companion he never knew he needed. A tale of love, loss, and letting go.
~*~
Rockstar!WWX and Bookseller!LWJ and they are just the cutest. Notting Hill is a classic romcom and this fic fits the romcom vibe perfectly. @gentil-minou
When the Lights Come Up
by brooklinegirl
E, 50k, Wangxian
Summary: Lan Zhan's brother draws to a halt next to him, staring at the man on the other side of the counter. "Oh, it is you, isn't it?" The man, still propped against the counter on his elbow, gives Lan Huan a grin, then directs it at Lan Zhan again. "I don't know," he says. "Is it? Am I?" "You are." Lan Huan is hurrying around to the other side of the counter, a wide smile on his face, while Lan Zhan looks on, feeling more and more perplexed, like he's stepped into some alternate universe where absolutely nobody is making any sense at all. "Wei Wuxian! Lan Zhan, do you know who this is? It's Wei Wuxian!" Lan Huan is reaching for the man's hand, and he pushes himself lazily to standing, shaking Lan Huan's hand warmly. "In the flesh," he says. "You caught me." "My goodness." Lan Huan is staring at him like he's never seen a human being before in his life. "What on earth are you doing here, of all places?
~*~
magical wangxian who adopt mo xuanyu in a setting that's written so vividly, the whole place comes alive! it's part of a larger series but it can be read alone, but most importantly the characters are so patient and kind with such great moments between them all @gentil-minou
quiet, blooming hours
by Sanguis (@bel-ennui)
T, 13k, Wangxian
Summary: Fingers push through the earth, and a long lost boy takes the first gasping breath of his second life. The house of buried things has a new surprise for Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.

For a prompt, could you do an AU of Spilled Pearl's where Lan Qiren is the older one by many generations and Wen Rouhan is a young upstart, Maybe even the youngest in his generation.
ao3
“I’m having a problem with one of my students,” Lan Qiren said.
“Oh?” Baoshan Sanren said, and put down her cup of tea. “This is going to be good.”
Cangse Sanren, the honorable eldest disciple seated beside her honored teacher, sniggered.
(Lan Qiren had never regretted saving her life, even though it had nearly cost him his own, even though bringing her back to her master’s mountain and fighting through the prohibition on her return had led to the highly singular sequence of events that had brought him to his present position as the mysterious near-immortal of the Lan sect that spent most of his time travelling but who appeared like clockwork every ten years to teach a summer’s worth of lectures at the Cloud Recesses.
But that didn’t mean he didn’t sometimes want to strangle her.)
“I thought you’d seen it all by now,” she said, her eyes curving into crescents even as her master cackled, the sound of her croaking slipping out of the strictly human towards the end. “What is it this one? He can’t be any more mischievous than my A-Ying.”
Lan Qiren had a headache just thinking about Wei Wuxian, and not just because the rascal was currently married to one of Lan Qiren’s favorite grandnephews (several times removed). If they weren’t so blindingly happy together, he would have objected long ago on the grounds of Lan Wangji being far too good to be wasted on a brat like Wei Wuxian, no matter how brilliant an inventor the latter had turned out to be.
“If your child is second in shamelessness, no one would ever claim to be first,” Lan Qiren said dryly, and ignored Cangse Sanren’s sniggered “That’s my monkey!” “But as it happens, this one is also a genius.”
“A genius?” Baoshan Sanren asked. “And here I thought you were going to say he was another Nie Huaisang.”
“…I thought we agreed you would never mention that name in my presence again.”
“You agreed,” she said. “I didn’t. Why would I ever stop mentioning the one true blemish on your otherwise pristine teaching record?”
“Mm, indeed. On the same subject, how is Yanling Daoren doing? Recovering?”
Cangse Sanren caught her teacher’s hand and lowered it back down to the table before it hit Lan Qiren in the face. She was still smiling, completely unaffected by the interplay between immortal and near-immortal – though he supposed, in fairness, that she was used to it by now.
“Tell us about this student of yours,” she said. “What’s the problem? Is he terribly arrogant?”
“Well, he’s a Wen. Arrogance comes with the territory.”
“That’s what happens when your sect is founded by a doctor turned general, I suppose.”
“Nasty little thug,” Baoshan Sanren sniffed. Lan Qiren wasn’t sure he believed her, less because he had any particular respect for Wen Mao than because he knew that the old immortal hadn’t had a nice word  to say about anyone for as long as he’d known her…and that was quite a while by now.
“His name is Wen Ruohan,” Lan Qiren said, deciding to ignore her. “And sad to say, he’s every bit as brilliant as his arrogance suggests. Even your Wei Wuxian has accepted him into his personal classes.”
Cangse Sanren’s eyebrows arched, suitably impressed. Her son preferred inventing new calamities to teaching, and spending time with his husband over either of those, so he severely limited the number of students he accepted at any given time, allowing in only the truly talented (or family, of course). Of course, given his terrible memory, he could also be doing that so he’d be able to remember what all of them were called…
“He’s one of the younger ones in his generation, but he’s already an accomplished master of arrays,” Lan Qiren continued. “He’s invented a fair share of them, and his cultivation level is quite impressive, especially given his youth. Beyond his academic accomplishments, he’s well-mannered and charming, thoughtful and quite clever, a good conversationalist, with a decent number of achievements in night-hunting and the like under his belt…”
“I’d ask about his morality, but you’ve already said he’s a Wen.”
“He’s not as bad as all that. He has a younger brother he’s quite protective of, and that seems to have stimulated his desire to be a good role model. Even if his understanding of convention morality is – ah – imperfect, then at minimum he is willing to abide by the usual requirements of common social mores.”
“All right,” Baoshan Sanren said. “Now that you’re done singing his praises, will you tell us what the problem with him is?"
Lan Qiren contemplated throwing his teacup at her face. It would probably be suicide, but oh, how satisfying a death it would be...
Cangse Sanren removed his cup with the excuse of refilling it. “Go on, Qiren,” she said encouragingly. “Tell us the issue you’ve been having.”
“Well,” Lan Qiren said. “He appears to be…infatuated with me.”
“Big deal. If I had to count all the students you’ve had that’ve been hot for teacher, I wouldn’t have years enough to do it,” Baoshan Sanren grumbled. “Just because he’s been obvious enough for you to notice doesn’t make him special.”
“That’s not the issue,” Lan Qiren said, and almost on cue Cangse Sanren got it, which he knew because she started laughing hard enough that she had to put his cup to the side to avoid knocking it over. “Your reaction is unnecessary.”
“Oh no,” Cangse Sanren said, cackling, and Baoshan Sanren starting grinning ghoulishly as well. “It’s very necessary, you’ll find. Very necessary…tell me, are you actually sleeping with him, or do you just want to?”
“It would be monstrously inappropriate!”
“Just want to, then. You’re too repressed, my friend – if he wants to and you want to, what’s the problem?”
“I’m his teacher.”
“He’s of age, isn’t he? And a Wen to boot, so he’s not about to be intimidated by the fact that you’re more powerful than he is…tell me, is the age gap between you part of the attraction? Does he find how ancient you are unbearably attractive?”
“I hate you,” Lan Qiren informed his dearest friend.
“I think you should go for it,” Baoshan Sanren announced, and Lan Qiren glanced at her with arched eyebrows – she wasn’t the sort of person who encouraged people to do things, old doom-crow that she was no matter the color of her feathers. “It’d be funny when you crash and burn.”
Lan Qiren’s eyes narrowed. “I am not accepting his suit just because you would be entertained by it.”
“No, you’d be accepting his suit because he’s brilliant, well-mannered, and a good conversationalist, and because you’ll have far too much fun putting him in his place on a regular basis while he livens up the wrinkled-up miserable raisin of a life you live. It’s just that it will also be entertaining for me.”
“Once the season passes, you won’t be his teacher any longer,” Cangse Sanren pointed out. “You could offer to allow him to escort you on your travels for a little while – if he agrees, that means he values you above his ambitions, which is a very high compliment for a Wen. And you’ll get to see if you like it.”
“You make it sound like some sort of – spring fling.”
“Autumn fling,” she grinned. “You teach in the summer.”
“Cangse Sanren!”
“Oh, let me have my fun! This is lovely, Qiren. I support you entirely.”
“I came here to be talked out of this, not into it.”
“You came to the wrong place, then,” Baoshan Sanren said, rubbing her chin in a thoughtful way Lan Qiren didn’t trust at all. “You ought to have known better – no, to put it otherwise, you did know better, which means you didn’t really want to be talked out of it after all. This boy must be compelling indeed to get your attention to such a degree in such a short amount of time…”
She grinned, then.
Lan Qiren really didn’t trust that expression.
“What are you smiling about?” he asked suspiciously.
“I think I’d like to meet him.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Wonderful!” Cangse Sanren said, clapping her hands. “We should lure him in. I can set up a night-hunt in the area, separate him from the rest –”
“You are not hunting him down as if he were a weak sheep parted from his flock!”
“So protective. I really must evaluate him for himself –”
“Leave him alone!”
“Does he have the capacity to cultivate to your level, do you think? He must be very promising.”
Lan Qiren wanted to strangle them both, and then maybe himself for crushing on a young man so many generations his junior no matter how bright his eyes were or how jaunty his smile when he tried out the worst of his terrible pick-up lines on Lan Qiren.
Though if he really did manage to make it to Baoshan Sanren’s mountain and back, it would undoubtedly serve as an aid to his cultivation, making it more likely that he would eventually be able to cultivate to a level where he could live alongside Lan Qiren for longer than he might otherwise, if he were not powerful enough…
Lan Qiren huffed in disgust as he realized he had it exactly as bad as the two women cackling in front of him were insisting he did. Why was he friends with them again?
“Because you love us, because we last,” Cangse Sanren said, her eyes twinkling. “Just the way you do. Just give in and let it happen, Qiren – you really do need to live a little. Otherwise, what’s the point of being alive?”

I feel like the true cruelty of the lan sect is a really overlooked topic in the mdzs fandom, because when you think about it...
they practically forced madam lan into marriage so she wouldn't be executed because she killed one of her teachers, but gave her no trial or chance to explain why, and once she was married they simply locked her away and that was that. qingheng-jun then locked himself into seclusion once he had a kid and that was that, had no business with the rest of the sect and left xichen and wangji to grow up alone.
not to mention the fact that wangji even being born is suspicious... xichens conception makes sense, as they would've needed a sect heir, but wangji? how would he have been concieved, if madame lan was trapped away and qingheng-jun was in seclusion. either this is a plot hole im looking way too deep into or theres something darker happening there
in any case, the twin jades most likely did not have a good childhood. like at all. their father was completely absent, and once their mother died they were practically parentless. sure lan qiren raised them, but he was also acting as the lan sect leader whilst qingheng-jun was away, so i doubt he held much involvement in their raising other than making sure they stuck to the rules and were fed etc
SPEAKING OF THE RULES. the punishments the kids in the lan sect had to deal with?????? the fact that nhs, wwx and jc were beaten for rule breaking whilst they were staying at the lan sect as pupils just makes me wonder how badly they treat their own lan disciples if thats how they treat special guests from other clans. they were fifteen when that happened, FIFTEEN, so clearly the lan sect has no problem with LITERALLY BEATING children to teach a lesson.
its basically just abuse to keep a system in place, and it makes me wonder just how many times the twin jades suffered like that as kids to be as 'perfect' as they are as adults
the lan are so corrupt in their ways and i hate how we dont fully see that in the story until wangji is whipped for protecting wei ying. the whole situation is so fucking cruel and unnecessary it makes my blood boil whenever i reread/rewatch that part, because yes wangji did wrong by injuring the elders but the only reason he did so was because they were refusing to listen to him and quite literally trying to murder his lover.
i get he committed treason or whatever by fighting the elders but 33 whip lashes all in one go with NO breaks or healing time?? with a magical cultivated punishment whip as well, its genuinely like they were trying to kill him. even if he didnt die from the lashings themselves he could've gotten an infection, or had severe blood loss, or hell they coulve broken his spine with the force of it. it took so long for him to heal from that, and it left him with so many scars both physical and mental. that level of injury would've likely left him with some form of chronic pain or illness as well, and it was just so cruel for a situation that didn't ever need to come to this.
they forced him into seclusion, just like his father, and punished him for defending himself, just like they did his mother. xichen ended up similarly as well, with his seclusion after the events with jgy. the lan elders had seen the horrific end qingheng-jun and madame lan had, and yet did nothing to stop their children from facing the same trauma, even making theirs worse.
the lans praise themselves as a sect that sticks to righteousness and principles, when realistically its just full of hypocrites holding onto power by means of fear and punishment. they say that lwj broke the rules by fighting to save wwx, and yet somehow torturing him was completely within the rules of the clan.
their rules and image are merely a cover up for the downright abuse and silencing of their disciples, and its just so fucked up. i could rant about this for so much longer, but also wanna see what other people think before i delve into some of the other topics i have in mind that relate

“Kitty”
Lan Zhan loves Wei Ying very much, and is quietly overjoyed to finally be dating him. Most especially because this means Wei Ying has stopped putting up a fight when he tries to look after him.
Like by securing an urgent optometrist’s appointment when he finally visits Wei Ying’s apartment after the man does a massive deep clean because it has to be nice for Lan Zhan and blinks down at Wei Ying’s pet.
“Wei Ying, why is there a raccoon in your apartment?”
And Wei Ying laughs and says, “Lan Zhan, that’s Kitty!”
“Kitty is a raccoon.”
“Kitty is my cat, Lan Zhan, don’t be mean.”
There is a moment of quiet consideration. “How did Wei Ying acquire this cat?”
“He was a stray, out by the dumpster at work. He’s super sweet, though. Used to take fries right from my hand. The internet says that’s kind of a bad idea, though. Teachable moment.”
Lan Zhan blinks at him.
They are going to get a rabies shot and prescription glasses immediately.
Wei Ying whines until he gets a proper look at his boyfriend in high definition and blows out a breath like, “Oh wow. Okay, yeah. Glasses.”
He appreciates seeing just how red Lan Zhan’s ears get, now that he can see it properly.
-
But the thing is, they don’t get rid of Kitty.
Because Wei Ying loves him.
And so when Lan Xichen finally comes to their place for dinner, he is confronted with a very well-cared for raccoon, which comes right up to him and pats his leg hello.
“Brother, this is Kitty.”
“...A-Zhan, Kitty has thumbs.”
“He is very clever, as well. He steals sandwiches.”
“That is because Kitty is a raccoon.”
“Yes.”
-
Mingjue starts getting borderline hysterical texts from his boyfriend about Lan Zhan’s batshitticus boyfriend and the raccoon he keeps in their apartment.
Mingjue assumes this is a funny joke, or that they just have a very fat dumpster cat, in true Wei Ying fashion.
But--
- NO MINGJUE
Tumblr media
- THIS IS KITTY
< Babe, come on.
And then, another photo. The same raccoon with a horrified Xichen leaning into the frame.
- A-Zhan asked him if he wanted bologna and he took it very gently in his RACCOON HANDS.
< NO
- Kitty is an astoundingly well-behaved RACCOON.
-
And that is the prologue to Lan Qiren losing his shit because his first grand-nephew is a literal, actual dumpster rodent.
-
(Friendly reminder that I take prompts and also have a neat website. ✌️)

Wangxian friends to lovers 🥰 (this my first time posting here, sorry if the formatting turns out weird!)
Wei Ying has a habit of kissing his best friend, Lan Zhan’s, cheek all the time. Lan Zhan, who has been in love with him for years, is steadily dying inside, but has absolutely no intentions of stopping it.
And apparently he doesn’t have to, because Wei Ying has suddenly stopped on his own.
It’s been a couple days since they’ve seen each other, which usually means Lan Zhan gets double cheek kisses. But this time, he gets none.
Lan Zhan is at a loss. Wei Ying is acting normal otherwise. He doesn’t seem angry or upset or out of it - nothing to suggest a cause for this change. Lan Zhan, on the other hand, can barely focus on the conversation. He wants to ask, but he’s not sure how to do so without sounding desperate or giving his true feelings away.
Wei Ying, of course, notices.
“Lan Zhan, you’re so out of it today!” He cries with a pout.
Lan Zhan wants to deny it, but he has no clue what Wei Ying may have been talking about the past several minutes.
“Mn,” he admits guiltily. “My apologies, I have a lot on my mind today.”
Wei Ying gives him a complicated look, but quickly covers it with a smile. “Ah, that’s alright! I’m being selfish, talking so much about myself! Especially when I know you have some big news to share with me, right?” He wiggles his eyebrows and nudges Lan Zhan with his elbow. Lan Zhan is, once again, at a complete loss. He wracks his brain for any ‘big news’ he should share with Wei Ying, but the only things that come to mind are:
1. Confessing his love
2. Confessing his despair at having not received a cheek kiss
3. Both. None of which are things he would actually like to share right now. Or things Wei Ying would know and ask about so casually.
“I am not sure what you are referring to,” he says instead. His heart drops at the hurt that flashes across Wei Yings face. “Ah, really? Are you keeping so many things from me you don’t even know which one I might be talking about?”
“Wei Ying, I am sorry, I’m not -“
Wei Ying cuts him off with a loud, obviously fake, laugh.
“Haha, I’m just kidding! It’s fine, Lan zhan! No big deal!”
Lan Zhan opens his mouth to express that it is, in fact, a big deal if Wei Ying thinks he’s keeping so many secrets he can’t keep track, but Wei Ying doesn’t give him the chance. “I just don’t really get it, you know? I mean, it’s not like you two are keeping it a secret - he’s telling anyone with two ears that you are together - but it’s fine!!” He hurries to add, like anything he’s said makes any sense at all. “Wei Ying, please don’t take this the wrong way, but I have no idea what you are talking about. Who am I not keeping a secret with?”
Wei Ying’s raises his brows.
“Uh, your boyfriend? Who you’ve been seeing at least a week now?”
Lan Zhan blinks at him, dumbfounded. “My what?”
“Your boyfriend!” He repeats with an exaggerated eye roll. “Su she? Come on, Lan Zhan, how do you forget that?!”
Lan Zhan fights down a wave of nausea at the thought of dating Su She of all people. Where could Wei Ying have gotten that horrible idea? He holds eye contact with Wei Ying, determined to resolve the hurt he still sees there.
“Wei Ying, I have no idea how you got that idea, but I do not have a boyfriend. And if I did, it would absolutely not be Su She and you would be the first to know.”
“Oh,” Wei Ying says dumbly, irritation visibly draining from him.
“Mn.”
“But… I heard him! Su Sh’s been telling everyone you two are together!”
Lan Zhan narrows his eyes in distaste. “He is lying. I will have a word with him tomorrow.”
“Oh,” Wei Ying says again. Lan Zhan nods and leans back, giving him some space to process things.
After a couple more minutes of stunned silence, Lan Zhan decides to be brave.
“Wei Ying,” he calls, then stops. Wei Ying watches him expectantly. Lan Zhan takes a Deep breath and continues. “Does this, perhaps, have anything to do with why you have not kissed my cheek today?”
Wei Ying quickly looks away, but Lan Zhan can still make out the flush spreading across his cheeks. “W-well duh! Obviously i cant kiss your cheek if you’re dating someone! I didn’t want to ruin your relationship!”
“I see,” Lan Zhan says. “And now that you know I am not in a relationship…?”
Wei Ying squeaks and whirls to face him. “Lan Zhan! What are you suggesting, huh?”
“That I am owed a kiss on the cheek.”
Wei Ying does his best impression of a fire truck, color and wailing siren included. At a velocity close to the speed of light, he leans over to peck Lan Zhan’s cheek and returns to his spot on the couch, pointedly facing away. Ears feeling understandably warm, Lan Zhan reaches up to brush a finger along the spot Wei Ying kissed. A soft smile stretches across his face. He decides to push his luck.
“Is that all?”
Wei Ying jerks around, face twisted in disbelief. “You want more?!”
“You did accuse me of lying,” Lan Zhan points out. Wei Ying barks a laugh.
“Oh so that means you get two?”
“Mn.”
Wei Ying rolls his eyes, but he’s obviously fighting back a smile. “Aren’t you greedy today, Lan Zhan. Fine, two kisses! Only because I feel bad for believing you would keep something from me.”
“Don’t feel bad,” Lan Zhan rushes to say. “It was an understandable confusion.”
Wei Ying scoots closer, until their thighs are touching.
“Hm,” he disagrees. “I should not have doubted you. After all, my Lan zhan would never keep something from me, would he?”
Just his undying love, Lan Zhan thinks.
“Mn,” he says. Wei Ying sways closer, nosing along Lan Zhans jawline, effectively vanquishing every brain cell he had left.
“Of course he wouldn’t. My Lan Zhan is so good to me, isn’t he?”
Lan Zhan can only nod, wondering where all of Wei Yings shyness and embarrassment from earlier disappeared to. Wei Ying chuckles, his warm breath brushing along the ridges of his throat. Lan Zhan shivers.
“My Lan Zhan would never make promises he can’t keep, right?“
“Mn,” he tries to agree, but it comes out an embarrassing croak. Wei Ying chuckles again and mercilessly brushes his lips up to Lan Zhan’s ear. The touch is feather light, but it burns through Lan Zhan like a wildfire.
“So tell me, Lan Zhan, how you can promise I’ll be the first to know when you get in a relationship, hm? Wouldnt the other person know first?“
Lan Zhan freezes. No. No way Wei Ying picked up on that little subtlety. He’s probably just teasing him, but all Lan Zhan can think is that he knows, he knows, he knows -
“They would be the first,” he admits. He feels Wei Ying grin against him.
“Oh? Do you admit to making false promises then?”
Lan Zhan shakes his head lightly. He should say yes, tell Wei Ying to get on with it, tease him, something, anything, but apparently his heart is tired of hiding. It pounds against his ribs so hard its cries echo out through his mouth.
“I did not,” he denies. Wei Ying pulls back a touch, not enough for Lan Zhan to see his face, but enough to clear some of the fog from his brain.
“Are you playing with me? If they know first, then how can I know first?”
Lan Zhan tries to swallow down the words, but it’s no use.
“It’s possible because that person and you would be the same.”
Wei Ying jolts back as though he’s been physically shocked.
“I - what?”
Lan Zhan forces himself to face him head on. The words are already out there, he only needs to be brave enough to own them.
As he takes in Wei Yings face, he’s relieved to see he looks shocked and confused, but not disgusted. It’s a good start, at least. He draws on all his courage and discipline and forces himself to elaborate.
“If I were to enter a relationship, it could only be with you, Wei Ying.”
Wei Ying shakes his head - not a promising action, but it could mean anything.
“Lan Zhan, what are you saying?”
Lan Zhan takes a deep breath.
“I am in love with you, Wei Ying. I have been for some time now.”
The words hang in the sudden silence between them. His entire world narrows down to the complicated series of emotions flitting across Wei Yings face, desperately trying to catch and interpret each one. His heart races in his chest, simultaneously trying to run to and away from its fate. Wei Ying’s face settles into something Lan Zhan can’t read, then he looks away. Anxiety twists his insides. He narrowly holds himself back from prodding for a response of some kind, anything to relieve the suspense. His internal chaos comes to an abrupt stop when a quiet sob slices through the silence in the room.
Wei Ying is… crying?
Lan Zhan reaches a shaky hand towards his shoulder, but hesitates before touching him. He has no idea what kind of sobs these are, it would be better to proceed with caution, lest he make things worse. He lets his hand fall.
“Wei Ying?”
Wei Ying startles, like he forgot Lan Zhan was there, then rounds on him.
“Lan Zhan, you absolute fuddy-duddy!” He cries. “Do you have any idea how upset I’ve been the past few days?”
That is… not what Lan Zhan was expecting him to say. Bewildered, he shakes his head stiltedly. Wei Ying scoffs. “Of course you don’t! Listen, there I was, enjoying a pleasant walk between classes, thinking how i can’t wait to see my favorite person, my darling best friend, love of my life, when all of the sudden some guy I’ve never met - never even heard of -
Starts talking about his amazing, incredible, sexy ass boyfriend, LAN FUCKING ZHAN, right there in front of me!! Do you have any idea how upsetting that was?!”
Lan Zhan, who is only about 20% certain he is both awake and alive, shakes his head like an idiot. “I was distraught! Devastated! Shattered! Overcome with despair! Not only is my best friend and the man I love seeing someone else, but he didn’t even bother to TELL me about it!!”
“Wei Ying-“ Lan Zhan tries to cut in.
“I AM NOT FINISHED YET!”
Lan Zhan wisely shuts up. “After that, I had to avoid you for TWO days to pull myself back together - which you didn’t even notice! And now, here you are, telling me you’re still single, demanding cheek kisses and confessing your love?! That you’ve apparently felt for ‘a long time”? Just like that?!”
"Unbelievable," he huffs. Lan Zhan waits a few seconds to make sure he's done. When only the sound of Wei Ying's heavy breathing fills the room, he risks reaching for his hand. The second he makes contact, Wei Ying grabs onto him like it's a lifeline. Lan Zhan softens and gives it a comforting squeeze. There are many things to unpack from Wei Ying's rant but are two things from it that require immediate attention.
"Wei Ying, I am sorry for upsetting you. I should have told you sooner, but I was a coward. I thought you would not return my feelings and I would lose you completely."
Wei Ying slumps against his shoulder, still clutching his hand tightly.
"Of course I do, silly," he mumbles. "Why do you think I kiss your cheek all the time?"
Lan Zhan shrugs helplessly. "I thought they were friendship kisses."
Wei Ying sits up to give him a look. "'friendship kisses' Lan Zhan, really? I don't kiss my other friend's cheeks!"
"... best friendship kisses?" Lan Zhan tries, half-joking. It works. Wei Ying laughs lightly and returns to his shoulder.
They sit in comfortable quiet for a moment. "I love you too, Lan Zhan," Wei Ying says eventually. Lan Zhan's heart swoops. Wei Ying has confirmed his feelings multiple times now, but hearing him say it so directly is different.
"I kind of said it before," Wei Ying echoes his thoughts. "but I want to be clear on that."
Lan Zhan's feelings are too big to put into proper words, so he only hums and pulls him closer.
Wei Ying curls into his side, his warmth comforting and grounding.
"So what now?" he asks. "Are you my boyfriend?"
Lan Zhan smiles. "If you want to be."
Wei Ying tilts his head back to grin at him.
"Of course I do silly!"
Lan Zhan chuckles. "Then we are boyfriends. And you are the first to know."
Wei Ying throws his head back in a laugh. "As it should be!" His grin turns mischievous. "You know, being boyfriends comes with a lot more cheek kisses."
"Oh?"
"Mhm, and not only that," he leans closer until their breaths mingle, lips separated by a maddening couple inches. "It comes with mouth kisses too, if you want."
"I want," Lan Zhan growls and closes the distance to seal their lips together. It's a long time before they pull away again.
"I love you, boyfriend" Wei Ying whispers against his lips. Lan Zhan moves in for another peck.
"I love you too, boyfriend."
End 🥰
Epilogue:
Su She is informed of his non-existent relationship with Lan Zhan via stumbling on Wangxian making out in the very same place Wei Ying heard him lie
It is an effective tactic, especially when coupled with Wei Ying's possessive glare as Lan Zhan mauls his throat.
Thank you so much for reading!! I had fun writing this and I hope you all enjoyed it! I originally posted this on Twitter and I wanted to move it here as my first written post! Will probably clean it up for AO3 soon as well 🥰

Lan Qiren modern AU fosters cats. He does not keep them. They are not HIS pets. But he fosters them constantly. Like. Kitten season is absolutely chaos at the main family house. Lan Xichen stopped asking to keep them around 8 cause he realized he was always a little relieved when the house was quiet, but Lan Wangji never really wanted one for himself at all. But. Lan Qiren proves himself a liar several times when he’s got a grumpy old cat in the manor all rubbing up on him and grooming his kids and he’s all ‘oh. Okay. We can keep that one’ and keeps fostering others. Just. Also. Now the kittens will have grumpy old uncles to check on them as they play too.
His fostering system also goes out the window when Lan Wangji comes home with a kid who Wangji found with a scraped knee at the park (the park across the street, and even tho Uncle is directly outside in the garden watching you, do not mean you should cross the street with someone else’s kid, A-Zhan, what if they think Uncle uses you to lure children inside????) and Lan Qiren notices that for some reason they have Jiejie Yanli (who Wei Wuxian has kindly pointed out) watching over an entire children’s birthday party by herself with no help. Oooof.
So. He gathers the kids up, grabs Xichen from the sitting room where he’s practicing his xiao, and take them back to the party. Yanli is DEVASTATED when she realizes that not only is an adult (she’s only like 13 okay this burden should NOT have come on her) coming to correct her, but her precious baby brother has made it all the way across the street with a stranger while she wasn’t looking???
Lan Qiren has managed to wrangle all the kids together within 5 minutes, gotten several booboos bandaged and asked Yanli to pass out some small snacks to keep them busy for a minute. Just in time for Xichen to come back from across the street in another direction, with the Nie brothers. This is actually helpful for once cause Mingjue is 16 (wow. So. Big.) and NHS comes with crafting supplies at all times.
It might end up messier than usual, but even the birthday boy Jiang Cheng, was getting overwhelmed and upset in the party before. Now he’s making friends with the pretty boy DaGe brought to play with them, and Yanli is finally no longer panicking, so both the brothers can calm down. Wangji is married now, obviously. They will adopts many babies and play house all the time. Before they were sorta trying to wrangle the other kids themselves which lead to A-Ying getting pushed down, and A-Cheng getting into some fights.
Qiren sits Yanli down and explains to her that he’s not mad at her, he’s not even disappointed in her. He’s disappointed in her mother who thought it would be a good idea to put someone with such little life experience in charge of a party of 10-15 kiddos. Even he called Xichen to go get his older friend up the street for backup instead of doing that alone. He also gives her a hug. Xichen likes hugs, and he’s an affectionate kiddo, and the kittens have prepared Qiren well. She is very happy and notes down their house mentally as a trusted adult who can help, or probably knows someone who can.
Lan Qiren may be an expert kitten fosterer, which means he’s ready to storm the chaos and turn it into a bundle of fluff… but even he wasn’t quite ready for his nephew’s husband to move in with them with a baby at 20. At least he’s prepared. Life is funny sometimes.

Writer's Note(s): I think I'll have to change around something because Wei Ying isn't the type to yell out that he hates people he really loves. Look at Jiang Cheng strangling him, or what all the Jin's (those before his brother-in-law and nephew) did to him. And even Jin Ling stabbed him and he didn't hold it against him. (@_@;) But it will still be dramatic, I'll make sure of it! I changed the ending location.
Also, remember my rules: I don't write abuse between partners. Telling your partner(s) that they should be dead is abuse.

Info on Reader: Reader is intended AMAB, and uses he/him. Reader is a cultivator but surname/lineage/powers are ambiguous. Reader is described as short-tempered and very dismissive, be warned.
Timeline: Can be anytime in story post-Book 1. Can be just eloped, can be mid-story, can be post-canon (although it makes more sense before the ending).

The war between the family names of the martial world spreads like a disease across the land. If it wasn't the slaughtering if the Wen's years ago on the masses, it's the torture of anyone with promise of the dark arts by the leader at Yunmeng. For now, it's not so bad the closer you are to a central family like Jin, Lan, or Nie because of the prosperity and closeness to the three head honchos.
But war never changes and whatever is in human nature that dictates them to push others around, always rears its head eventually. Especially near small towns or cities on the outskirts of civilization where lawful officials are harder to come by, if their there at all.
The deaths in the town just two hours to the south of the inn you were staying at were piling up and the miniscule evidence of who it could be was making you antsy from when your group left to travel there.
Lan Zhan suspects political intrigue, but you wave that off as just a basic theory. Wei Ying hums in agreement with Lan Zhan, because of how the two dead officials in the morgue seemingly were rivals to people still alive. You shrug that off too, much to Lan Zhan's irritation.
Your party was that of your dear Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan, two people you trusted greatly and with your whole heart to be able to stand at your side. Wei Wuxian has always been praised for his strategic mind and his very successful plans, and you can definitely agree with that. Lan Zhan is always praised for his poise and steady hands, being very reliable on the field. You can't deny either of these.
Lan Zhan also agrees with how Wei Wuxian creates good plans, and so you both leave it to him to create a baseline blueprint before you come back with what he needs.
Taking off into town with your share of the lists, you head right for the districts that surround your area of gathering and quickly get all your shopping done. Sure, you maybe didn't haggle very well in your rush and you might have paid nearly all of the full price for everything, but it was worth it!
Worth it, how exactly? For you to go ahead and scout the area that Wei Ying was left to plan for. It wouldn't be a bad idea to go ahead of time and scout out the area, yes?
Wrong. It had been a bad idea.
Getting to that area had lead to you tripping the traps of the town to the south, and the light it gave off could be seen for miles and miles in the darkness of the night. The late night sky, which caught the whole inns attention, became alive in alarm all around the two remaining cultivators. Of course, because of your elongated absence, your parnters began to worry.
Mostly, Wei Wuxian, who had already scouted the woods ahead of time in the daylight.
You sneaking back into the inn after the more paranoid people are swarming the garden to watch the light show is easy. Explaining what you did, with how your not exactly pleased with what you did yourself, was hard. Your adrenaline was running, and so was Wei Wuxian's.
Sleep deprivation, adrenaline, and indignation do not mix well.
"Why didn't you come back to the inn? We have a plan in mind and I could have told you the forest was trapped!" Wei Wuxian demands an answer.
You spit back at him, with venom. "It's a simple mistake, and we always have overlapping knowledge anyways! What would me going to the town be so bad?"
"Because it was trapped." He stresses. "I have a map of all the traps we were supposed to take down early in the morning, so we could double-check them."
Of course, Lan Zhan tries breaking this up and calming you both down. But the scene you both were making ended faster then his indecision could shake off...
"Fine then, if these traps are so difficult to handle and it'll need three cultivators all night... I'll prove it! I'll prove I could have done it tonight, myself." Your declaration is met with you picking up your satchel of supplies, the map of traps, and marching back out of the inn. "By morning, these traps will be gone!"
From the banister, Wei Wuxian calls to your back, "No, the traps aren't the problem, it's the fact all the traps are made like... flares..."
But you already left, ignoring both of your partners watching you from the banisters. They don't go after you because of your temper, and the knowledge that you often need time to yourself. For now, all the sleep deprived Wei Wuxian can do is hope you'll be back by morning. Lan Zhan decides on giving you three hours to calm down.
Three hours of rest, and they'll go looking for you.
Tumblr media
Running through the forest and passing by multiple cut and defused wires and strings for the flares, Wei Wuxian and Lan Zhan are quiet as the former leads them to the town ravaged by war. The traps were clear all the way up to the town...
Once they make it there, they see signs of a struggle and obvious signs of unrest from the town. Swordsman from the clan they were trying to abolish from the city were sprawled out, dead or dying across the ground and isles of towers around the town. Civilians were mostly unharmed, but it was obvious they had suffered greatly for years.
By the time that they could find any trace of you as a person, it was your outer robes given to an older man who carried his own sword. He looked winded, leaning across the wall, but he looked very much full of vigor.
Stopping quickly, Wei Wuxian helped the man sit on the ground as he asked the important question: "What happened here?"
The old man answers. "It was nearly the dead of night and the curfew had begun for the town, when the old families magic traps set off flares of light into the sky and blinding the town. They were always inconvenient things, the lot. A man came out of the woods not two hours ago and started killing the old family with no mercy. The man was like a savior to this old town..."
He looks at his old sword. "The man was obviously tired by the time he got here, and I could tell he was tired. Injured as well. My family gave him medicine before more guards came. I tried protecting him, but he threw his jacket on my back, and ran off into the city. I don't know where that young man is now..."
Wei Wuxian becomes quite anxious as the story continues and Lan Zhan has to keep his arm across his partner to keep him calm. After thanking the old man, they leave him be as they run into the center of town.
"What if he's not alive and we find his body amongst soldiers?" Wei Wuxian panics. "Why didn't he listen to me? I didn't call him anything, but I know how he feels about being corrected... Did I say anything rude Lan Zhan?"
"No. He is prideful, and hasty. But he is resourceful. We have to trust him." Lan Zhan answers back, believing in your skills fully.
"I trust him." Wei Wuxian worries. "I don't trust this place! He's all alone, somewhere!"
Lan Zhan could tell the tiredness, anxiety, and fear was running Wei Ying to anxious ramblings. "Wei Ying. Trust him."
"Of course, of course... Trust him... Trust him..." Wei Wuxian repeats to himself, before muttering to Lan Zhan. "But if he is dead..."
Lan Zhan can hear it coming, and the thought of your fierce corpse didn't settle his own nerves at all. "Wei Ying."
"I know... I know..."
Getting to the town center has Lan Zhan drawing Bichen on the remaining soldiers that were trying to break into their own stronghold. The main house of the old family was mostly wooden with faded red lacquer across the floors and columns. A family of old money obviously wasn't living much longer in the city, as Wei Ying can see the old and children running for the gates. They weren't who they were here for, and nobody in town was attacking anyone outside of armor anyways.
Playing his tune for resentment, he gives orders for armor to be torn and the old family to be pushed from the city. Nothing more, nothing less. This whole process takes about thirty minutes, and they the fierce corpses fall back to the ground once they came.
Cutting their way into the second floor through the paper screens with Bichen was tense and bitter, and seeing soldier and soldier dead on the ground wasn't giving them much more hope...
... Until, they could hear the sound of tearing and grunts. Running there, they come into the room where you had found the families medicine stockpile and began dressing your wounds.
They ran over as fast as possible, chests lightening from the sight of you alive and moving. Lan Zhan takes over cleaning and dressing your leftover wounds as Wei Wuxian nearly falls as he sits beside you.
Wei Wuxian, tired in his voice and body, in no less sincere: "I'm so sorry we had a fight, we should be in bed right now... Why did you want to prove yourself so bad? You know we believe in your skills."
You answer with a wince at the medicine. "I get antsy... when war is around the corner. I can't stand to think of this town going another day with the old family that lives here, and our commissioners are so close to storming the town. I don't like innocent lives potentially getting killed..."
"But you ran in alone, how can one man protect the innocents in this city as he's killing the old family?" Wei Wuxian asks, still with worry deep in his voice.
His worry wears you down, and you look almost sheepish and sad. "I... believed you both would follow me eventually. I know I'm rash. It was a dumb train of thought, I know, because you look absolutely exhausted, Wei Ying... But I do care for you. I'm sorry..."
It was Lan Zhan who spoke up next. "And we, you. Wei Ying couldn't stop worrying about you on the way up here."
You tease him in good nature. "Lan Zhan, you weren't worried about me?"
Lan Zhan hums in a negative, before he answers you. "I know you could do it. Everyone from the old family is either old or young. No between."
"Wait... So everyone in armor is basically old men and women?" You question, and something almost clicks in your mind. "... So that means our targets..."
"Escaped. Probably after the first flare." Lan Zhan answers.
"Fuck..." Both you and Wei Wuxian groan, but at least you rest upon each other's shoulders as Lan Zhan finishes your wounds. Lan Zhan sits on your remaining open side, and also leans on you too. A little rest, is in order.

The one night mistake and a dream:
"This must be a dream.", Wei WuXian look at yourself, exactly same appearence and same powers, but someting seems off. Like his skin is glowing and pink, almost healthy looking, he is fully covered, like a Lan with his black robes well put until his neck.
"Must be a curse...", the other Wei WuXian said, and then snort a sad laugh, "Or just a stupid dream."
"So... you seem different."
"I know."
"What happened? After everything?"
"... we won the war."
Wei WuXian grins sarcastically, "Yes, i know."
The other Wei WuXian clench his jaw, "Ugh, i was really unsufferable back them."
Wei WuXian is silent, but the air became cold between then, "You didn't use the ghost path anymore."
"No, just sometimes."
"And...about Lan WangJi..."
The other Wei WuXian looks away, like the barely mention of him is enough to make his head turn the other way. But, his face turn into a red thing with his blush cheeks, what is unusual.
"I don't want to talk about what happened. Is useless, you are me and this is just a dream."
"So he still hate us? He tried to force me back to Gusu?"
"... no.", the other Wei WuXian sighs, "I just can't look at his face after what happened."
"What you mean?", Wei WuXian expected the worst. Maybe Lan WangJi and him fought for real, maybe Lan WangJi said something? He always knew after what happened when they meet each other after 3 months, that one day they would fight, they never will be friends. Lan WangJi hates him and wants to lock him to punish Wei WuXian because he is just like Lan Qiren, hating everything that came from the "wrong path".
"I had sex with Lan Zhan."
...
Wei WuXian, in the battlefild and even between war companions, always had this gloomy and scary aura, with sharp eyes and antisocial behavior, always with corpses and ghosts around him.
But now, after hearing the absurd of him and Lan WangJi having intimacy (and his betrayer of a brain letting him having a 3 second scene in his head) his gloomy aura vanished while his expression went to scary to pink cheeks and a mix of horror and shy expression.
"What!"
"I was drunk, is not my fault!!"
"What the fuck do you mean?!! This is impossible-"
"Because Lan WangJi is not a cutsleeve and neither are me, yes... but it actually happened."
"How?!!"
"We went to drink and i think i had too much alcohool, so Lan Zhan grabbed me and lead me to his room..."
"He-!"
"I pushed him on the bed and just kissed him!!"
"Thats false! I... stop that! I want to wake up!!"
"Listen, it was really... good... Heavens, i-"
"Stop! Why i'm dreaming with this!!"
While the younger version of him was having a break down, Wei Ying smiled and said 'screw it' to himself.
Bullying himself was actually really fun, "Listen, Lan Zhan was actually pretty good on bed."
"Oh no..."
"Oh, yes!", he said happily, nothing like the shy he was before, "He grabbed us and ***** and then **** us on our ******* while we ***-"
"No, no, no, no-!!"
[...]
In one of the tends, while the war tense the weather, Wei WuXian wake up. His cheeks burning and pink, while the shame grow on his chest.
"What the fuck?"
[...]
In another place, Wei WuXian wake up on the inn him and Lan WangJi shared. His bed is empty and the laugh he was holding goes away slowly. He curled up on bed and inhale the sandawood on the sheets.

“Are you going to tell me what’s bothering you, or are you just going to stay there until your knees hurt too much for you to stay still?” Wen Qing can hear the bite in her voice even if she doesn’t altogether mean it. Jiang Cheng knows that she doesn’t, or at least he should, she’s scratching his scalp the way he likes it, for heaven’s sake.
Maybe, if she were nicer, she would have pulled him between her knees and wrapped her arms around him. Maybe she would have pressed her cheek to the top of his head. She isn’t nicer, though, not by a long shot. Wen Qing is just nice enough to let him lay his head against her thigh without pushing him away, she’s just nice enough to ask him, rather than expecting him to tell her. “Did you fight with Wei Ying again?”
Their bickering shouldn’t be her problem. It isn’t. Not really. It isn’t her problem just as much as it really, truly is. Wen Qing scratches from the top of his head down to the nape of Jiang Cheng’s neck and back up again, taking just a moment for herself to pinch one of his ears between her forefinger and thumb.
If he’d just had a fight with his brother, he would have answered her by now, he would have worked himself up into a gust of wind big enough to topple a forest, only to deflate like a sluggish breeze on a hot day. Without thinking, Wen Qing lets her hand drift down to Jiang Cheng’s cheek, one knuckle dragging back and forth just underneath his eye while she thinks. She doesn’t even notice both of his hands wrapping around her calf until Jiang Cheng is stuck to her like glue.
“Can’t I just want you?” Jiang Cheng asks and Wen Qing feels his hands squeeze her leg just once before his chin digs into her thigh. Jiang Cheng’s eyes are heavy on her and Wen Qing wants to balk. She wants to get up and open the window, if only so she can get rid of whatever imaginary humidity that’s building up between them. It makes her clothes stick to her back.
It makes her throat stick to itself, choking off anything else she might’ve had to say.
His hands slide up her leg, both of them on her knee now and she should push him off, she should get up and walk away, but before she can, Jiang Cheng is reaching up and holding her hand by the wrist. She can’t even stroke his cheek anymore.
“Do you even know what you want me for?” The words don’t come out as sharp as Wen Qing wants them to, they don’t make Jiang Cheng back away for even a second, he doesn’t even let go of her wrist. Instead, he makes it worse, he turns his face and kisses her pulse. Wen Qing almost doesn’t manage to swallow down the horrible squawking noise that threatens to come out of her.
She could kill him, but she doesn’t want to. She doesn’t even want him to stop.
That’s the worst part, isn’t it?

"There is hope as long as you live."
My notes on themes of depression and found family in New Life Begins
Spoilers for New Life Begins ep. 24-25
CW: childbirth, depression, postpartum, attempted suicide.
Just finished episode 25 of New Life Begins, and I was NOT prepared for the absolute chaos of found family breaking all of the rules to save their depressed friend from dying.
The raw emotion. The sheer absurdity of Yin Qi threating to hurt himself if they don't let him take the physician to see his friend. The way you can tell Li Wei dove into the water to save her friend bc she's soaking wet. Zhao Fang Ru telling the maid not to cry just minutes before having her own breakdown. Because crying would be admitting defeat, and she isn't about to let Hao Jia die, and yet... she can't stop her own tears. And of course, Yin Zheng showing up just in time. Holding a sword to his brother's throat so the others can run in and help Hao Jia.
It's all so melodramatic and bordering on ridiculous, but I LOVE it. Despite the DRAMA, it's so real and relatable and moving. Let me explain...
As someone who is mentally ill, I was so impressed with how they depicted Hao Jia's depression. The self-loathing. The feelings of incompetence. The belief that you deserve your fate bc of the mistakes you made. I have never given birth or suffered from postpartum depression, but so much of what Hao Jia feels mirrors my own experience with depression.
Which is why I was so moved by her friends and their absolute REFUSAL to stand by and do nothing while she suffered. While she was dying.
Li Wei running from the carriage when she realizes what Hao Jia might do...
Shang Guan Jing saying "From this day forth, we're her family who will back her up." (Ep. 24) And taking up her spear when she hears that Hao Jia's dying, claiming she'll take the physician there by force if she has to.
The 5th and 6th prince feeling powerless but doing everything they possibly can, from angering their father and going against their brother, the Crown Prince. Threatening violence even. All to help save Hao Jia. (I know people will argue that it's bc they want to help their wives, but I think it goes beyond that. Bc they seem seriously concerned about Hao Jia too. They're worried about her).
Zhao Fang Ru gripping Hao Jia's hand as she lays on the bed, cold and getting colder, pleading "Do you hear me? Open your eyes and talk to me. Hao Jia!" Using every tactic at her disposal, even threatening Hao Jia that if she dies, she'll take it out on her child. (I don't think she would actually hurt Hao Jia's child. I DO think Zhao Fang Ru is desperate enough to say anything if she thinks it will wake Hao Jia, and keep her from letting go).
I have a confession to make. While I have always hated the role of "damsel in distress," there's a part of me that has always wanted to be rescued.
When I played by myself as a child, I would imagine scenarios where I was in danger and someone would save me. Interestingly, whenever I played with my friends, I hated when it was my turn to be rescued in our games. But when I was alone, when I couldn't pretend to be the strong hero...
Maybe that's why I always appreciate stories like this. Where someone who is alone and scared has a support system that will do anything to take care of them. Will fight and scream and rage if it means saving them. It doesn't fix everything, and it doesn't always cure them, but it's beautiful. It fills me with wonder. I think that's why found family is a favorite trope of mine. People finding each other and caring for each other. Fighting the odds together.
At the end of episode 25, Hao Jia is surrounded by her friends. She says, "I heard about all the things you did for me. I've failed you."
To which Li Wei replies, "As long as you live, we will do anything. You were unhappy because you were ill. Take good care of yourself and recover. Your life comes before anything else, understood?"
Yuan Ying adds, "If you ever need help, you must let us know."
"Right," says Shang Guan Jing. "We are all here for you. Don't shoulder everything on your own."
They all look up to see that it's dawn. The sun rises, and sunlight filters in through the window and touches each of their faces.
And I'm crying. Because for so long, I felt like Hao Jia. I felt alone, and I felt like I deserved to be alone. But like her, I also have friends who care for me and don't want me to suffer in silence.
The internet says this show is a historical romantic COMEDY btw. And yeah, most of the show has been fairly light-hearted. There's romance, family, politics, and food. LOTS of delicious food.
Don't get me wrong. It still has funny moments (I wasn't kidding when I said parts of this show are absurd), but I'm pleasantly surprised to discover the show also wants to tackle serious issues.
Whatever else this show may be, for me, it's about these friends and how they've become a family. It's beautiful, and I'm in love.
To everyone out there struggling with depression, I leave you with this line from Li Wei, "There is hope as long as you live."

Had an idea after reading @cerusee's post on ways wwx could find out about jiang cheng’s sacrifice, specifically their first idea about lwj and jc being trapped in a cursed cave that plays out emotionally charged memories!
Jin Ling conspires to bring his uncles together and get them to actually talk to each other - things do not go to plan.
For one, Wei Wuxian brings Lan Wangji along with him, which means he has even less reason to go near Jiang Cheng, and Jiang Cheng is going to spend the whole time glaring at Lan Wangji and not looking at Wei Wuxian!
And secondly, they get themselves separated halfway through a cave, with Jin Ling and Wei Wuxian on one side of a very solid looking wall, and Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji on the other. Which means that even if JC and WWX were starting to look slightly less tense around each other, it doesn’t matter now because if Jiang Cheng doesn’t murder Wei Wuxian’s beloved husband, Wei Wuxian’s beloved husband is going to murder him!
Whilst Jin Ling and Wei Wuxian are desperately scrambling to come up with a way through this magically appearing wall, Jiang Cheng and Lan Wangji are standing on the opposite side taking very deep breaths and exploring their options with as few words as possible.
It turns out the cave is enchanted and feeds off strong emotions, in order to reap the most distress it can, it taps into its victims brains and plays out some of their most emotional memories.
For Lan Wangji, it plays out his memory of fighting off his own clan members in order to save A-Yuan, followed by his brutal punishment.
Jiang Cheng has several emotions about seeing this, most of them different flavors of self hatred - the great Hanguang Jun proving yet again how worthy he is of Wei Wuxian’s love, how he knew all along that he was worth protecting.
Shortly after that, it is Jiang Cheng’s turn, and he and Lan Wangji find themselves standing in a rainy market in Yilling, watching a much younger Jiang Cheng give himself up to the Wen in order to save an oblivious Wei Wuxian, to where he is dragged off by them to be tortured and have his core ripped out.
As soon as it’s over Jiang Cheng is up in Lan Wangji’s face telling him in no uncertain terms that he will kill him if he ever breathes a word of it to Wei Wuxian. Lan Wangji shoves him off and after a long while, Jiang Cheng pulls himself together and they go back to figuring out how to get out.
Lan Wangji would think nothing of what he had seen, except a sadness at how pale and drawn Wei Ying had looked in the vision, but for the fact that he knew it would make a huge difference for Wei Ying.
In the midst of this, Lan Wangji says “Wei Ying would want to know”. Jiang Cheng stops what he’s doing but does not turn around “What do you care?”
“About you, I do not. But Wei Ying…”
“You heard him yourself, he said to leave it in the past. He- I don’t owe him anything anymore. Let him believe what he’s always believed”
After that they work in silence, eventually working their way to freedom, and back to Jin Ling and Wei Wuxian.
After sealing up the cave to prevent anyone else falling into it’s trap, the two pairs go their separate ways with very short, tense goodbyes.
Lan Wangji does not mention what he saw for a long time, but he thinks about it often. It is not until one night, when Wei Wuxian, a little drunk (but safe and warm in their home), mentions his once-brother running back to Lotus Pier to retrieve his parents bodies, that Lan Wangji feels guilty enough that he nudges Wei Ying to sit up from where he’s sprawled over his lap.
“ Wei Ying..”
“Huh, Lan Zhan I was comf- what’s wrong?”
“Jiang Wanyin did not.”
“Didn’t what? What’s with that face, Lan Zhan, you’re making me nervous, ha.”
Lan Wangji takes a deep breath and takes Wei Ying’s hand to give himself a moment to think through his words, before looking back into his wide, worried eyes, “In the cave, it showed us his memories. Jiang Wanyin did not go back for his parents.”
He takes a moment to swallow down his anger towards the man in question, “He got captured to distract them from you.”
Wei Ying stares at him for a moment before smiling sadly and shaking his head.
Lan Wangji interrupts him as he opens his mouth to speak, “He did it deliberately, Wei Ying. I saw it.”
It takes some time for it to sink in, and when it does Wei Ying is so distressed that Lan Wangji almost regrets telling him. But after some time of Lan Wangji holding him and reminding him that Wei Ying does not owe Jiang Wanyin anything, that he did not even want him to know, and a few aborted attempts to leave and sprint his way to Yunmeng, he calms down enough for Lan Wangji to get him into bed, with the plan to leave for Yunmeng in the morning.
Lan Wangji says goodbye to Wei Ying in a town on the outskirts of Yunmeng, after flying him there, recognising that he needs to see his brother alone, but wanting to be close enough for his own peace of mind.
Wei Wuxian walks up to the gates of Lotus Pier with no plan and an emotional mixture of anger, sadness, regret and love fuelling his steps.
(Jin Ling’s plan did work…eventually!)

so i took this post and made it... worse, probably.
(also now in lwj's pov)
[M, 3.6k, 1/1, Wangxian]
Tags: Major Character Death, suicide, suicide by zhiji (but, like, softly?), time travel, hurt/comfort but mostly hurt, I’m not going to lie this is all angst, not a happy ending (i've added a tiny consolation ending but it's not really enough here)
--
It is dark when Wei Wuxian opens his eyes. Cold. The stone is rough, jagged against the soft, tender bruise that is his body. Something is dripping, pooling, rippling. It echoes in the spaces between breaths and heartbeats. The awful silence of fear and worry.
He doesn’t know where they are. The same place Lan Zhan always takes him, probably. A cave. Near enough to be possible but secluded enough to hide them. Him. For a little while anyway.
At least this time he’s lucid. Mostly. And this time--
He laughs. A wretched sound that burbles against the blood in his lungs, the death in his veins.
"Did you see them, Lan Zhan? Did you see?"
His voice ricochets off the stone walls and he winces with the sound of it. Rough, scraping, like the rock he’s lying on.
"Wei Ying--"
Lan Zhan’s voice is softer. Smoother. Like the pool and the ripples. Wet, too. Not with a mouthful of blood, but with sadness. Regret, maybe. Apology, definitely. Wei Wuxian can’t stand to hear him apologize again. He can’t. He cuts him off. Continues his rambling.
"United in their hate,” he says. Bitter still. Even after so long, after so many fights.
"Let me--"
"But they were united." He sighs at that. Allows his relief to color it something other than red.
He feels Lan Zhan’s confusion even before he asks, "Wei Ying?"
It’s easy to smile with Lan Zhan.
His eyes are still adjusting to the dim, but Lan Zhan has a light all his own and Wei Wuxian finds him close. He’s always close. Traces the tiny dip in his brow, the wrinkle where his lips press together in the smallest pout.
Even here, even like this -- bloody and desperate -- he’s beautiful.
"It doesn't work if there's no villain, Lan Zhan.” He keeps his voice softer now. Almost a whisper. As clear as he can make it. “This world doesn't work if there's no one to hate."
"I don't understand."
"You should go. Leave me. They'll only hurt you if they find you here."
"I won't leave you."
Such conviction in him. In his Lan Zhan. He should probably be used to that by now, but it steals his breath every time. He wants to reach out. He did before. He’s not sure if he should again. He closes his eyes instead.
"So stubborn, Lan Zhan. So good. Always so good."
"Wei Ying, I--"
"At least Shijie is alive this time."
It just slips out. He doesn’t mean to say it, any of it. But he can’t take what Lan Zhan might say to him in that voice of his. That serious choosing-words-on-purpose voice. An apology, a negation, a confession. He’s not ready for that yet. He’s never ready for it.
He really didn’t mean to say--
"This time?"
But he did. He did say it. He’s never said it before, never explained. And now Lan Zhan is looking at him even more confused. He deserves something. An explanation, probably, but Wei Wuxian really doesn’t have the energy for that now.
Not the whole thing.
Maybe just a piece.
"Yes,” he says, and anxiety begins to claw a path up his rib cage. It shakes something loose inside him: another laugh, an apathy of sorts, “Aiyou, Lan Zhan, I've done this so many times.” He shakes his head, rolling his skull against stone. “I'm so tired."
He is. So tired.
His body is torn, shredded, broken. The seal ripped him apart when he destroyed it. It sucked the resentment from his bones like marrow and left him with nothing to stitch closed his wounds.
Still, earlier was better. He’d been right about that.
Jiang Yanli lives. And Jin Guangshan’s face was glorious as the metal shards rained down upon him and his gathered clans.
It didn’t stop them from attacking. He’d been right about that, too.
"Rest,” says Lan Zhan. “I will be here."
He sounds unsure. Not of his own words; of course he will still be here. Wei Wuxian has long since learned to not doubt Lan Zhan or his devotion. It’s the getting him to leave that is always the hard part.
No. He is unsure of Wei Wuxian’s. Not, Wei Wuxian thinks, that he believes them false, so much as mad ravings. Hallucinations or lies told by the demons in his head.
There are no more demons, he wants to say. They’re gone from me and that’s why I’m dying.
But he doesn’t say that. It doesn’t matter. It doesn’t matter if Lan Zhan believes him, or if he thinks him driven insane by resentment. None of it matters because he’s here.
He’s here. And Wei Wuxian has lived this night over and over, changing and fixing, trying and trying… But no matter what, as long as he survives Nightless City, Lan Zhan is with him in its aftermath. Lan Zhan is here. By his side.
In danger.
"They're coming,” Wei Wuxian says, slurred a little in his weariness. He does not say who. He knows he doesn’t need to. “They'll be here soon. They'll take you. You should let them take you."
"I will not le--"
"A'Yuan needs you, Lan Zhan. Let them take you."
He doesn’t plead; he doesn’t have enough breath left to plead. But this worked, once.
"Wei Ying?"
It’s still dark when he opens his eyes, but this time he’s adjusted enough to see Lan Zhan frowning at him. He aches with what he’s asking of this man. The years of quiet mourning, the shock of early fatherhood. It hurts more than his twice-broken bones. But it never--
"It's okay. I-- Like I said,” he smiles, small but sincere, “it doesn't work if there's no villain."
"Why you?"
This man.
"If not me, then who?"
"Not you."
This amazing, stubborn man.
Lan Zhan bites his teeth, clenching his jaw tight like he’s holding a snake inside of it. His knuckles are white with his anger, his frustration.
He deserves so much more than what Wei Wuxian has twisted his life into, but maybe he can give him something to hold onto. Something to ease the emptiness in his heart, in his soul.
"It's okay, Lan Zhan. I know.”
Lan Zhan’s eyes snap wide and frightened, meeting his with urgency and concern, contrition so clearly building on the tip of his tongue. So Wei Wuxian softens his own as much as he can. Holds his smile, a warm curl like a petal in sunlight.
“I know,” he says again, reassuring, he hopes. “You've stayed with me before."
This time Lan Zhan latches onto it.
"Before?"
"Yes. You're always so good. Too good. They hurt you when you fight. Don't-- Don't let them hurt you. A'Yuan needs you."
"A'Yuan?"
There’s a brightness in the way he says the name. A fondness. Even before he has taken the boy home, brought him into his clan, claimed him as his own. He is always such a good father. Wei Wuxian wishes he could be there to see it.
"He needs you to raise him. I know you'll take such good care of him, Lan Zhan. You always do."
Lan Zhan flinches at the last sentence, the light of him dulling with it.
"Wei Ying, I don't understand."
He’s frustrated. Wei Wuxian is being cryptic and weird, which, honestly, Lan Zhan should probably be used to at this point. But Wei Wuxian has also lost a sense of scale for what anyone should or shouldn’t be used to, so maybe not. He still doesn’t have the energy to explain.
"I know. It's okay."
It’s nothing, empty, but the honesty of it soothes some of the lines from Lan Zhan’s brow anyway. It’s good. Nice. To see him settle so easily for Wei Wuxian.
Determination knits itself into the line of his lips and Wei Wuxian recognizes it in an instant.
"Please, Wei Ying, I--"
"Don't say it. Don't say it, Lan Zhan. It only hurts more if you say it. If I-- Don't say it."
It does hurt. It hurts so fucking much. Even if Wei Wuxian knows -- and he does, he knows -- it is so much worse every time he hears Lan Zhan’s confession of it. Different each time, but heartrending to leave him after.
He doesn’t know if it’s better or worse for Lan Zhan. Maybe, if he wakes up in Mo Manor this time, he’ll ask.
This Lan Zhan takes it in stride. It’s a rejection to him, but one he was expecting.
He says, "Okay. Okay, Wei Ying."
He masks the sadness of it well. But Wei Wuxian can still see it, can always see it. It’s no less than what he deserves for putting it there.
"Let them take you. When they come, just go with them. Don't fight."
Obstinance returns, a welcome distraction.
"They will kill you."
"Yes."
"I won't--"
"You must. They need a villain,” he says again. “They don't need two. But if you stay with me, if you fight them for me, that is what you become. A'Yuan needs you."
It’s A’Yuan that makes him back down again. The sadness, the rejection, weighing on his shoulders, in the black hollows of his eyes.
"Okay. Okay, Wei Ying."
He’s seen it before. He’s seen it over and over again. He should be -- should be. Fuck should be.
He reaches out.
"Hold my hand?"
"But--"
"I only said not to say it. Not that it's unwelcome."
Lan Zhan’s hand is big and warm. It envelopes his own. The calluses scratch against his tender skin and it hurts but only in the best possible way. He thinks he might gasp with it, if his lungs were still capable of something so dramatic.
"Wei Ying--"
"Shh. Hush now, Lan Zhan. Just hold me. They'll be here soon."
They stay there together, breathing in the quiet, the cold. The dripping sound keeps time for them.
Lan Zhan laces their fingers together and traces the lines of Wei Wuxian’s veins with his other hand. It is soothing in a way that brings tears to Wei Wuxian’s eyes. So full of love. So perfectly, wonderfully, Lan Zhan.
Strangely, it is Lan Zhan who breaks the silence.
"If you've done this before, why not fix it? Why not live?" he asks.
Wei Wuxian sighs. They’re fair questions, but, "It doesn't work. It all falls apart. The clans fall to each other if not to Wen Ruohan. They need--"
"A villain. So you've said."
"Ah, Lan Zhan!” He laughs and it’s wet enough that he coughs around it. “Interrupting me, so bold!"
"I am trying to understand."
"I know. I know. There's not enough time. Which will be very funny to you later. Nothing but time. Maybe I will see you again, Lan Zhan."
"They will kill you."
He sounds almost petulant, which is… absurdly endearing. Wei Wuxian can help but smile, despite the topic.
"Yes. Yes, and you should let them. So you can save A'Yuan.” He turns his gaze to the ceiling, too dark to pick much of anything out. A few sharp lines of stone. “Maybe, maybe you can make them all see. Make them open their eyes in the Burial Mounds. Make them see who it is they're running through."
Lan Zhan brings their joined hands to his lips. Not a kiss. But his questions ghost over skin, warm and gentle. "Why can't we show them together, Wei Ying? Why?"
"It doesn't work. It's too late for me. You saw what I did to them. You saw the monster I've become."
The seal’s destruction didn’t only hurt him. In its panic, it ripped pain and anger and guilt from the souls of everyone gathered before the Palace of Sun and Flames. Everyone who didn’t have high enough cultivation to protect themselves from it, anyway. Cultivators from all clans dropped to the ground, dead or wounded, as the resentment tore itself from their bodies.
And when the seal finally shattered, the shockwave of its death throes liquefied flesh and pulverized bones of those nearest to it.
It was horrific.
It was necessary.
"Wei Ying--"
"I asked you to kill me once. If I was too far gone. Do you remember that?"
Rain and mud, horses and a parasol. The kind of honesty that nobody wants.
"I do."
"Would you do it now?"
"Wei Ying?!" Lan Zhan startles, stands, dropping Wei Wuxian’s hand, like his body cannot contain his reaction, like he cannot allow the idea of it to touch his skin.
Wei Wuxian chuckles. "I know. You're too good, Lan Zhan. You never agree to that."
"Wei Ying, please."
There’s a whine in his voice, hidden under the admonition.
It’s cruel, this conversation. No matter how it starts or how it ends, it is always cruel to Lan Zhan. Cruel to let him sit here with hope, crueler to make him believe there never was any. It is this conversation that shows Wei Wuxian his own monstrosity.
A thought occurs.
"I could make you."
Lan Zhan freezes. "Wei Ying?"
"I could make you kill me.” He can feel the ice settle into his voice. “I haven't tried that before. You would be the hero, then maybe you could stop the slaughter."
"You are not a villain, Wei Ying!" Lan Zhan is terrified. He’s masking it with anger, but there’s a tremor in it, like the whine, a note out of alignment, out of tune. It peaks around the corner, clinging to the hope of reason, of insanity.
It’s interesting… new. Curious. Wei Wuxian wonders where it might lead.
"I am,” he presses. “I'm a monster, haven't you heard?” That ice, that cold curiosity frosts each syllable. “A demon.” He watches Lan Zhan shiver with it. “You would be venerated for putting me down."
It’s a good idea. It’s, at least, not a terrible one.
He rises as much as he can, elbows jammed against the uneven stone with the weight of him.
It would take a lot of energy, more than he has, possibly, to force Lan Zhan to kill him. And Lan Zhan, good and stubborn as he is, would probably allow himself to be killed rather than kill Wei Wuxian himself. He will have to lose himself to madness, first. Invite more resentment in. A lot more. Is there even enough nearby to--
"Please..."
Lan Zhan is on his knees before Wei Wuxian’s seat. His head is bowed, and he’s on his knees like he’s serving a punishment: back straight, hands at his sides, perfect posture.
Wei Wuxian hadn’t even heard him move, so caught up in his thoughts.
But he had. He had moved. And now his shoulders are shaking. It’s a fine motion, small. Less even than a shiver, less jarring than a sob, but tears -- bright, even in this lightless cave -- fall to the dirt or to the neat bloom of his silk skirts.
“Please, Wei Ying…”
He’s kneeling and crying and begging, and Wei Wuxian feels every bit the monster they say he is.
Because he doesn’t let it go.
He relents a little. Warms, lightens.
"It would crush you to do it, I know.”
Lan Zhan looks up at him with hope shining in the unshed tears. And Wei Wuxian is a monster because as soon as their eyes meet, that hope flickers out, and it is Wei Wuxian who is doing this to him. It is Wei Wuxian who is crushing him.
“We could do it together,” he offers, “you and I. Draw your sword, Lan Zhan."
"No."
His fists clench and he stares Wei Wuxian down.
"Lan Zhan, they'll kill me either way. Let me die like this: in your arms, with you by my side."
"I can't--"
"A quick slide, right through my ribs. It will be almost peaceful this way."
"No!"
The more he talks it through, the better it sounds. It is the best idea he has ever had. The best way he can die. He can choose it. He can make it easy, nice, kind. He can do this, if only Lan Zhan will let him.
"You can hold me.”
He watches Lan Zhan flinch, but it’s okay, he knows why. He understands. But he also knows-- He needs to make Lan Zhan understand how good this can be. How this can work for everyone.
“They'll praise you for it.” He says it like the concession it is. “You'll hate that, but then the spoils will be yours. You can claim them. It could work, Lan Zhan."
And Lan Zhan does understand. He does, because he lowers his eyes again. His posture weakens. And he doesn’t say “no” anymore. Instead, he begs, "Wei Ying, please do not ask this of me,” and Wei Wuxian knows he’s won.
"It's too much. I know. I know, Zhiji."
It is cold comfort to offer it now, manipulative even. But he does mean it. Lan Zhan is the one person who understands him most in the world. The answer to his very being. And Lan Zhan grasps at the word with both hands. He clutches them into Wei Wuxian’s bloody robes.
"Zhiji. Zhiyin. Wei Ying."
Tears are falling in earnest. Another drip-drip-drip in the cave. Syncopated.
"You would do it if I asked you to. I know you would.” They both do. It is the reason Lan Zhan is begging him now. It is the reason that terror is so violent in his eyes.
Wei Wuxian bites his lip. He stalls.
Lan Zhan is kneeling.
Lan Zhan is shaking.
Lan Zhan is crying.
Wei Wuxian has seen it before but not like this. Never like this.
He speaks his thoughts aloud. “But is this something I can let myself ask of you? Is it too cruel? To make you bear this with me? To make you take some of the weight."
"Please, don't... Please, Wei Ying,” Lan Zhan begs again. But the fire has gone out of it. It is still a broken and wretched thing, but there is no longer any hope. Because he knows. He understands. This is the best way, this time.
So when Wei Wuxian says, "Draw your sword, Lan Zhan,” Lan Zhan lets go of his robes.
He sits back on his heels, drops his head, and with a quick motion Bichen appears in his hands.
With Bichen there, solid and real, Lan Zhan pulls himself straight, a cultivator of proud heritage and discipline, like he cannot be anything less with steel in his grip. He is so beautiful. Hanguang-jun, standing tall, blood and dirt falling away from him as he shines brighter than the moon.
"Wei Ying." His voice is steady, though the pain in it still rings clear.
"Good,” says Wei Wuxian. “Good. It'll be quick. So quick.”
He sits himself up and reaches for Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan catches his hand, helping him sit. He slides behind him, bracing against the cave wall, and pulls Wei Wuxian close against his chest.
He’s so warm, so solid, yet soft with care and layers of silk. His breath is warm against the side of Wei Wuxian’s face, against his neck and collarbones. One hand spreads wide over Wei Wuxian’s waist.
It is the most comfortable Wei Wuxian has ever been in this life.
It is impossible to not lean back into Lan Zhan. To not soak up all the love and tenderness that he can feel washing over him with each shared breath, each synchronized heartbeat.
He folds one hand over Lan Zhan’s on his waist and wraps the other around Bichen’s sheath.
“Don't worry,” he says, trying to keep them on task, “they'll be here soon. They'll see. They'll help you. Your brother will help you.”
When Lan Zhan swallows, Wei Wuxian’s head bobs with it. When he steels himself with a breath, Wei Wuxian’s whole body moves in time. And when he draws Bichen, they gasp in unison.
The blade glows an icy blue in the blackness of the cave and Wei Wuxian blinks rapidly against the light. He watches, rapt, as Lan Zhan smoothly moves the point, never letting go of Wei Wuxian’s waist, until the bloody, black fabric of Wei Wuxian’s robe is splitting, fiber by fiber, just above the doubled line of their fingers. He angles the hilt down, slowly, achingly slowly, until it’s right. Until the slide will be perfect, easy, deadly.
“Yes, right there,” says Wei Wuxian, and hears himself stutter with it. He thinks he feels steel when he takes a full breath. “It's okay, Lan Zhan. It's okay. It's okay if it's you."
"This is not--"
"I know. I know. Just hold me."
This is not what they meant when they said this in the rain. Either of them. This is not what they wanted when they came to this cave. Either of them.
But it is good. It is right. It will work. Wei Wuxian has to believe it will work.
"Wei Ying?"
"Yes, Lan Zhan?"
"May I say it."
"Ha. Yes, Lan Zhan. I think. I think I'd like to hear it."
"I love you, Wei Ying."
"I know. I love you, too, Lan Zhan."
"I know."
Lan Zhan sounds like he’s crying again. Wei Wuxian might be crying, too. He’s not sure if he can anymore. His cheeks are too numb for him to tell.
"It's okay, Lan Zhan. Deep breath. That's it. It's okay. It will be okay."
There’s a sound, far away, toward the entrance of the cave, and they both startle with it.
"What's that?" Lan Zhan asks.
But he knows. They both know.
"Footsteps. They're almost here.”
Wei Wuxian’s heartbeat picks up, a sluggish attempt at anxiety. But he needs Lan Zhan to do it. To do it now before he overthinks it, before his family can stop him.
And, anyway, it’s his turn to beg.
“Lan Zhan, please. You can do it. Please. Lan Zh--"
A short slide.
"Wei Ying."
Then nothing.
--
"Wei Ying."
.
"I love you."
.
"I'm here."
.
.
.
"Wangji?"
"Xiongzhang. He's gone."
"Oh, Wangji."
--
(And then the first thing WWX does when he sees LWJ at Mo Manor is kiss him full on the lips in front of all the baby Lan disciples.
And then the first thing he does when he gets to Cloud Recesses is get slapped by Wen Qing who he definitely didn't let run off and die for him this go around.
And maybe it's even his last time loop? Who knows!)

Okay, the title I gave the last post gave me another idea.
Yu Ziyuan and Jiang Fengmian have been night-hunting in an attempt to improve their relationship while their children spend a year in Meishan Yu with their grandmother.
Because of this, they learn of Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren's deaths sooner and find Wei Ying in the inn before he is turned out onto the street. He is roughly 4 or 5 years old at this point and even Yu Ziyuan doesn't want to turn him out on the streets.
That doesn't mean she likes her husband's plan of just bringing him home like that's a thing people do.
"People will talk," she tells her husband. "They will say he is yours and I will lose face. We can take him as a disciple, but not into the family."
But Jiang Fengmian, while too quiet and soft for her tastes, is a very stubborn man.
Yu Ziyuan considers leaving. She could return to her children and simply live with her parents and them and let her husband tug this whole mess down on his own head. But she won't do that.
"I have conditions. Either you agree to these conditions or I leave."
Her husband brushes a hand through the hair of the sleeping child. She wants to hate him, but for this to work, she can't.
She and her husband have had many marital issues, including nearly a year not long after Cheng's birth when she returned home, intent on dissolving their union entirely. She wants him to fight for her and, when he refuses, she leaves.
(In another universe, this leaving stops when the child arrives as she refuses to cede ground to the interloper).
"He is ours," she tells him. "He takes our name. We bribe whoever we must so that he has always been ours. Like A-Li, he has been sickly and so he has been living with my relatives in the hope they can help him. Our night hunts are a cover to visit him. Whatever his true age, he is now a year younger than A-Cheng. Do you understand? I refuse to compete with a dead woman so either he is mine or I am gone."
She watches her husband, knowing this demand hurts him. Erasing Wei Changze and Cangse Sanren from A-Ying's life hurts him. But, accepting him into her household and enduring the endless rumors and speculation his presence would cause hurts her.
Finally he speaks, "Jiang Ying is a fine name."
When A-Ying awakens, Ziyuan unties the red ribbon from his hair. "A-Ying," she says. "I am your mother now. You are Jiang Ying. You are three years old. You must remember that. A monster has killed your parents and their spirits asked my husband and I to keep you safe. The only way we can do that is if we fool the entire world into thinking you are someone you are not. Do you understand?"
"Like pretend?" the child asks.
"Very, very important pretend," she affirms. "Now what is your name?"
"Wei, no, Jiang Ying," he says.
"Very good, Jiang Ying," she says. "And how old are you?"
"This many!" he says, holding up three fingers.
She catches his hand and presses a kiss to it. "And who am I?"
His eyes fill with tears. "Did they really ask you?" he asks.
"I made a promise," her husband says, side-stepping the question easily with truth.
A-Ying rubs away his tears and sets his face in a stubborn expression Ziyuan will learn to fear in the future. "Mama," he says. "We go home now?"
She gathers him into her arms. "Almost," she says. "First we need to collect your older sister and brother."
Over the following days, Ziyuan quizzes the new Jiang Ying repeatedly until his answers are automatic.
Over the years, he forgets he is not their natural born child. His early memories of other adults explained by his years with Meishan Yu.
Then Ziyuan and Fengmian die and Yanli is the only one who remembers he is adopted, though even she does not know from whom or why. It is not until she is looking through the remains of her father's study after the war that she finds a half-burnt letter from a Wei Changze sharing the birth of his son, Ying.
She has to decide whether or not to upend Jiang Wuxian's world. (He is still Wuxian because in this AU, Changze and Fengmian picked courtesy names for each other's sons long before they were even married).
In this world, when Jiang Cheng loses his core, he forces himself to hide his despair because he is a big brother and has a younger brother to protect. He likely even warns Wen Qing that Jiang Wuxian will try to do something stupid and to not let him. When people challenge that he cannot be a Sect Leader without a core, he points to his brother and says something like "He has spiritual power enough for the both of us." This is a Jiang Cheng who was never made to feel inferior. Wuxian's successes are proof he is a good role model and teacher for his younger brother. No Core transfer. No demonic cultivation. No Stygian Tiger amulet. But the Jin still round the Wen into labor camps. And Wuxian is torn between helping them and supporting his brother who is trying to lead a sect without a core. Because of this he actually asks for help. (Or worse comes to worst, this is when he learns about his past and how he is actually a Wei rather than a Jiang and decides to use rescuing the Wen as an excuse to run away. So then his siblings have to get through to him.

Golden Core
Summary I was rewatching MDZS donghua and thought to myself "if only he told them about his golden core". Here I am. Probably very bad but hey I needed to get it out of my system.

Written in Wei Wuxian pov
I tried
I just wanted to make Jin Ling happy
I finally reached Qiongqi Path with Wen Qing. I could hear some Lanling Jin disciple shouting orders. I turned to Wen Qing indicating her to stay behind me, then we proceed foward. There they were all the remaining people from Qishang Wen, they were only elders and a child. "Move you Wen-dog!" Ah, that annoying voice of Jin Zixun, if it wasn't for his title I would've killed him right were he stand. "How dare you to stop walking! Move your ass you filthy dog!" He shouts at the old man, 'You're one lucky bastard Jin Zixun, if I had a blade I would've cut you in half'. I walked forward with Wen Qing following behind, "Wei Wuxian? Why are you here?" "Wen Ning" "Who?!" "Wen Ning, where is he?" "I don't know who you're talking about" Man, just listening to him annoys the hell out of me. "Are you sure?" "I said I don't know! Why would I keep tabs on some filthy Wen dogs?! What you want to save them?" He looks at me thinking he "hurt" my feelings "And what if that is my idea? You're going to stop me?" I make eye contact with him and scoff "With your ability, you'll be lucky to tickle me" "You- You're nothing but a son of a servant, you have no title, you low born scum!" "Come on, can't think of a new way to insult me? You're pathetic. Wen Qing go ahead, when you find Wen Ning call me. I'm going to entertain Little Lord Jin Zixun." When I said those words a swarm of Lanling Jin disciples took out their blades and prepared to fight me. I took out Chenqing, that action alone was enough to make them hesitate. I started playing and in a blink of an eye half of them were on the ground. "AAAH!!" Wen Qing screamed from afar, I just quickly delt with the annoying ants and rushed to her position. When I reached her I heard "AH-NING!!" I looked over and saw what they've done to him. "You killed him" I turned to Jin Zixun "So what? He's a Wen that's his fate" "Wen Qing and Wen Ning, never harmed anyone, instead they helped many cultivators. So tell me what kind of sins they and the others here have committed?" "THEY'RE SURNAME IS WEN! THAT'S THEIR SIN, ANY ONE WITH THAT SURNAME DESERVES TO DIE!" There's no use trying to talk to this waste of a human. I felt the Stygian Tiger Sigil react to my emotions and it exploded, all of it's energy floaded into Wen Ning, turning him into a Fighting Zombie. I started playing Chenqing. I was so close to Jin Zixun then-
A familiar sound, 'It's him'. "Wei Ying" 'Lan Zhan' he looked tired and sad. Then I looked up there he stood the other waste of oxigen, Jin Guangshan and his bastard son Jin Guangyao. "Wei Ying, calm down and put Chenqing down, let us talk!" "CALM DOWN?! PUT CHENQING DOWN?! HOW ABOUT THEY CALM DOWN AND THEY PUT THEIR WEAPONS DOWN?!!" "Childe Wei" I looked up to see Jin Guangshan smirking at me "Childe Wei don't you think you're exagerating? I can let you take this Wen dog, but before that how about you hand over the Stygian Tiger Talisman?" "Hah, Jin Guangshan, do you think that, since Qishang Wen is gone Lanling Jin should take over their position, do what you want us to do, hand over our stuff to you. I almost forgot that Qishang Wen never got destroyed." "YOU- What do you mean by that?! Don't get ahead of yourself! Do you have any idea how badly are you painting the Yunmeng Jiang Clan?" "I've said it before, what I do has nothing to do with Yunmeng Jiang Clan" "Wei Wuxian, you have no manners at all! Is that what they teach at Yunmeng? You first show up with no blade by your side, what are you trying to show off? Are you famous enough? Is your hubris not satisfied with all the attention you have?"
I grit my teeth and close my eye and in a moment of rage I let out the truth.
"SO WHAT IF I DON'T HAVE MY BLADE BY MY SIDE!? I'LL TELL YOU WHY I DON'T HAVE MY BLADE! I DON'T HAVE A GOLDEN CORE!" Lan Zhan and the other present had a shocked face "I GAVE IT TO JIANG CHENG. NO I DIDN'T GIVE IT TO HIM TO MAKE HIM "OBIDIENT" TO ME! BUT BECAUSE HE'S MY BROTHER! AND I WOULD DO IT AGAIN FOR HIM! SO DON'T YOU DARE GO AROUND SAYING "WEI WUXIAN NEVER CARED ABOUT JIANG CHENG AND YUNMENG" YOU ALL KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ME!" Shit, why am I crying. Ah, shit. I finally opened my eye to see Jiang Cheng.
Ah, he looks like he's going to cry. What do you know about suffering Jin Guangshan?" "Huh?!" "I lost my parents when I was young, I lost my adoptive father and the clan that raised me and I've lost my brother and sister. I'm not afraid of losing my life for this." "You're patheti-" "That's enough." Jiang Cheng said "Lord Jin, Wei Ying is still a disciple from Yunmeng, so I'm going to decide what to do with him." "But this isn't just about Wei Wuxian! Is about the Wen!" "Yeah! These waste of Wen should be eradicated!" "Also the Stygian Tiger Talisman!" "YEAH! It could be dangerous for all of us of he use it!" "YEAH! HAND IT OVER!" "SHUT UP!" Jiang Cheng said while whipping the ground with Zidian. 'He definatly has Madam Yu attitude.' Lan Zhan turned to Jin Guangshan "I agree with Wei Ying, why is Lanling Jin acting as the clans leader? Why does he have to hand over the Talisman to you and not destroy it right now?" The last question made a lot of head turn "Well that's because..." "Sect Leader Jin, I Sect Leader Jiang Cheng would like to formally dissolve our alliance. From now on Yunmeng Jiang Sect will act as an indipendant clan." He turned to me "What are you waiting for? Let's go home." "Huh?" "You and the rest of them, let's go." This cause an uproar "WHAT DO YOU MEAN DISSOLVE??" "SECT LEADER JIANG PLEASE LISTEN!" "ZEWU-JUN, SAY SOMETHING!" Zewu-Jun looked angry (well on the Gusu way) "I'm afraid that I must also agree with Wangji and Sect Leader Jiang. I'm sorry but Gusu Lan also shall act as an indipendant Clan." He bowed to the rest of the cultivators and nod to Lan Zhan to leave. Lan Zhan turned back at me and looked at me with what I would say, endearment.
While I, Jiang Cheng and the Wen survivors were leaving. I heard some other clans also leaving the alliance.
The next day the main 3 clan Gusu Lan, Qinghe Nie and Yunmeng Jiang we're now just allies with indipendant goverment, everyone is equal and they don't meddle with others sect. Lanling Jin was left with some minor clans and by some pressure from the main 3 clans, Jin Guangshan resigned, in his place Jin Zixuan took the rule and he promised to not act like his father. He married Jiang Yanli, but this time not for any power gain, but for love, this union was blessed by Jiang Cheng and I, after some convincing from Shijie.
Many things happened Jin Guangyao trying to assasinate Jin Zixuan, which failed since we found the main collaborator, Su She. He was promptly arrested and judge, his verdict? Execution for treason and attempted murder.
Shijie gave birth to their first child, Jin Ling, I got to pick his courtesy name when he reaches 15 years of age. Me and Lan Zhan became closer, to the point where he would come to Yunmeng with Tianzixiao when he was free. With time romance blossomed and I too got married. Jiang Cheng was busy with the re-building of the Clan, and as I promised I helped as much as I could. But hey, when you're traveling the world with the love of your life you can't help much like I should.
The End
So that's it. I basically changed the story. I tried to leave it to y'all imagination the future. Yes I still kept Jiang Cheng single cause I just think he's not ready to handle someone else's feeling when he still ha to figure out his own. But yeah hope you liked it, sorry if there is any misspelling I'm very tired and I'll probably see y'all when I write again. Byeee.

▪︎ Execution 1 ▪︎
OCs introductions(?) Not all but still, also idk why I wrote this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first thing she lost was her left eye.
The second thing she lost was someone's heart.
The third she lost was half of her body.
She was impaled and slammed away, her neck was slit open with her own daughter as the blade before her body was sealed into _____
Zili's eyes never left hers, from the beginning until the end, and yet her gazes couldn't be described into one that held grudges, happiness nor sadness.
She could prevent all of this from happening. She had the power to. Why wouldn't the leader from one of the most feared clans save herself?
Simple, she was ignorant about everything.
No matter how many times she was warned by everyone from the clan to the point other clan leaders also tried to reason with her, she would not listen to any of them.
Why? Because it's about Zili.
"A-Jie! Please! Just for this once, please, listen to us! They are all planning on bringing us down! We need to do something about this, we need to cut ties with all those pests before they take actions!" The young man was pleading, his grip tightened on his sword's hilt. Feng Jianyu.
One by one, everyone squirmed their way into you. Everyone would not stop begging you to reconsider your choices of feigning ignorance.
One of the powerful clan leader even personally kowtowed to you, if you were to fall, she would lose her only foundation of life, her life saviour.
"Ane-ue! Please, all the clans will drag you down along with your clan if you remain ignorant! Even if you don't want to attack them back, please make sure to prepare a proper defense for yourself and let us, the Kawagashi clan, handle the counterattacks!" The girl with one broken horn on her forehead spoke as she buried her head on the floor with her legs folded into a kneeling position. Kawagashi Kiyomi (Qing Jian)
Endless pleadings accompanied you until the fateful day arrived.
Hao Yuchen, the leader of the strongest clan, the False God, lead his army to attack your abode. He who you see as your guardian. He who had always protected you. He who ____
"From the South- the Hero is here! Ying Qingyuan is also here!" Everyone prepared themself for a battle, each of them holding their respective weapons. You steadied your heart, mumbling countless reassurance for yourself.
While he may be a strict figure, Ying Qingyuan is still someone who you also see as your guardian, your shixiong. Endless training that would always have you lying on the ground, leaving you breathless and crawling in pain could not be compared to the ache in your heart when you heard this news. He trained you mercilessly so that you could stand by your own even if it means breaking one of your leg and yet who would expect him to be the one who would fight you?
From the North was the Heartless General, Hao Yuchen right-hand man despite being the ruler of the North side. You didn't know much about him but he had never irked you in any way. You didn't feel that much when knowing this, it's only natural for this puppet ruler to listen to its owner and yet, why did he look so... low-spirited?
"Milady! From the East is She Qingyi's leading her armies toward us!" Your trusted handmaiden, Liu Wei (Yui) rushed into you, her face pale as her lips stuttered to speak again. You knew her but was not in any familiar term with her so you found her leading her armies as nothing sorrowful.
"Cai Zili is also in the East with She Qingyi's men!"
You looked at her in disbelief. Zili? You ran toward the East side, hoping that she mistook someone else as Zili. She had to.
But she didn't. Zili didn't have any men nor any banner with her at all. Just her and her white horse with a polearm in her hand.
But ... why? She had always been there for you. You two swore an oath and now...
Everyone's panicked yellings fell deaf to your ears. No one blamed you for your ignorance in the end. In fact, everyone begged for you to retreat and wait until the Kawagashi Clan came as a reinforcement.
"...ttack"
"Pardon?" The red haired woman dropped her great sword before approaching you to listen to you properly. Liu Qinghua (Sayaka)
"Attack... I'll... fight them back..."
Sayaka's eyes widened at your statement. It's a good thing that you decided to attack them back especially with how strong your clan was. Just before she could bark the order, you tapped her armor as you stood up,
"I'll stay at the front line while you all fall back"
"Shizun!!"
Just before Sayaka could stop you, Yu Yanya showed up and dragged Sayaka away from you as she whispered your plans into her. Tears flowed down from her eyes as she nodded at Yu Yanya's words.
"Everybody! Fall back and scatter away if you wish to protect the Yanagi (Liu) Clan's legacy! Clan leader-" Sayaka sobbed mid way as she tried her best to finish her last words
"Clan leader will face them all by herself to buy us time!"
You closed your eyes, trying your best to ignore everyone's pleadings and cries. Your handmaiden helped you opened the gate of your abode before bowing down to you, her tears never stopped flowing out from her eyes.
"Yui will seal all of Clan Leader's teachings and flee to ××××! Feng shixiong, you are responsible for ensuring everyone's safety along with me and Ame! (Liu Yu)"
Feng Jianyu shook his head in disbelief before marching toward you.
"A-jie! Don't leave me again! Don't die on me again! Please, let me fight alongside with yo-"
Feng Jianyu was silenced the moment you casted a spell on him. A spell to restraint him.
"Drag him away"
Liu Yu showed up out of nowhere as she nodded at you before walking toward the restrained man with a stoic yet pained expression on her face.
Feng Jianyu did not stop yelling at you, begging for you to let go of him until he was finally far away from you. It didn't take long until your abode fell silence.
While you are only well versed in creating illusions as weaponries, you are also familiar with the Kawagashi Clan's techniques. Delusions. Delusions of people in your abode to trick them. Illusions of music tunes. Illusions of flower petals. Illusions of a splash of water. All turned into a deadly attacks the moment it reached people.
The Kawagashi clan would come, but that didn't mean they would come on time. For now, you'd indulge in their wishes. In Zili's wish.
To seal you for eternity. Why? Because they feared you? You scoffed at the foolish reason.
A grudge against Hao Yuchen for sacrificing people for your ascension was shot at you instead. Envying your position of being the ruler of East side, a gift from Ying Qingyuan himself after your ascension.
"Come at me, pitiful souls"
----
Ying Zili did not partake in any of their devious plans.
After all, why would she ever do that? You trusted her and will forever trust her no matter what she did to you. Whether it's the truth or not.

First day of school
So I have this modern au scenario of the dumb trio in their first day of school in the Cloud Recess Highschool. A freshman Wei Wuxian wants to make a name for himself, and what is the best way to do it? By making a prank to the school principal, of course! He’s a genius, but he needs his friends help (actually is just to make sure he won’t die alone if he gets caught).
. .
.
- Wei-xiong, Are you sure you know what you are doing?
- Of course he is not! Can’t you see he’s pouring the wrong quantities!? Here, let me!
- Nooo! A-Cheng, please trust me on this one! I swear I’m following the  the guy’s instructions correctly!
- Yeah right! I’ve been watching you closely, and your actions don’t match with the guy’s voice.
- A-Cheng! Give it back!
- Not until I finish calculating the correct amounts!
- I think I’ll just go and guard the door in case a professor come.
- Wei Wuxian! You’re gonna regret biting me! I’ll break your legs right here, right now!
- Noooo! A-Cheng, step back! A-Sang! A-Sang, help me!
- Wei-xiong, careful with the...!
That were the last words they heard before a huge explosion created a big, dense and black cloud. While the three teenagers -whose faces were cover in some kind of black dust- were coughing and shaking their hands in an attempt to disperse the smoke, the fire alarm’s sensor, which was in the chemistry lab’s ceiling, went from being in a flashing green to a flickering red. Immediately after that, a sickering sound started and the fire sprinkler got activated. The only thing the trio was able to do at this point was to watch how the water was sprinkle all around the class trying to fulfill it’s purpose of extinguish a non-existent fire.
-...
-...
-...
- So…that went well. I mean, that could have gone way worst than this. Right, A-Sang?
- Wei-xiong…
- WEI WUXIAN! You fucking idiot! Look at what you have done! I won’t have mercy this time! I’m gonna kill you and cut your body into pieces so no one will be able to find you! A-Sang, you’re gonna help me!
- A-Cheng, I…
- Me?! It was all your fault! You’re the one who pushed me into the shelf with the powder pot! Also, you can’t kill me! Shijie will notice right away it was you and will scold you!
- I’ll take the risk!
While the brothers were fighting and yelling at each other, Nie Huaisang decided to look for a way to turn off the fire sprinklers. The black dust had already mess up with his makeup, he didn’t need the water’s help to make it worst. Also, he wasn’t in the mood of catching a cold. He walked across the class and took a  bowl -that is usually used for bain marie- and decided to use it as an umbrella in a vain intent of keeping his soaked hair drier. He was still looking for a switcher or something like that when a way more important object caught his attention. That little object could be his and his friend’s doom.
- Um…guys.
- Jiang WanYin! Back off! I have a flask and I ain’t afraid to use it!
- Guys…
- Wei Wuxian! Don’t you dare calling me by that nickname! The only one who gets to be mad at this point is me! Also, I have a microscope and I ain’t afraid of using it either!
- Guys…
- That’s cheating! Yours is bigger and harder! That ain’t fair!
- That’s what you get for being an asshole!
- Oh, for God’s sake! Shut the fuck up and listen to me you idiots!
- A-Sang…
- See what you’ve done?! Because of you, A-Sang got pissed and yelled at us!
- I said, shut up!
Wei Ying, who was about to start a new fight, closed his mouth and looked with genuine horror at his friend who is usually gentle. In the other hand, Jiang Cheng put his weapon down gently and gave all his attention to the shorter of the three pals. Once both brothers were at his mercy, Huaisang pointed at something in the roof with a face full of genuine anger and concern. The other two looked at the object that their friend was pointing at.
- Shit…
- Is that what I think it is?
- Well, now we are officially in trouble.
- Wei-xiong please, stop waving at the camera.
.
.
.
Well, it is my first time translating one of my stories, sorry if there are grammatic or orthographical errors, English ain’t my first language. I hope you enjoy it!
