Grocery Tips From a Fellow Broke Person
So I know I have been talking about budgeting food often recently but its because I just had a bunch of bills stacked up and so I am breaking out all of my personal tools for groceries for the next few months. I feel several on this site are int eh same boat, and if needed here are some of my personal tips on grocery shopping.
If you can’t get fresh get long lived
Simply put, we know how healthy it is to eat fresh veggies and fruits, it is important to eat them in your diet for numerous health reasons. But fresh is not always an option, depending on where you live, fresh may be expensive or it may be a time of year where fresh produce may have gone up in price or you may not have a place to store them for one reason or another.
There is nothing wrong with frozen vegetables! They are affordable, last a long time, easily stored and are easy to cook. You can find them for around .50 cents to about 2.47 a bag depending on the brandy, type and size of bag. Sometimes this is more affordable than the fresh.
Canned veggies are also always an option. They may have their downsides with studies showing too much preserved food can cause health issues, they are still a better option than just straight ramen and noodles every day! They still hold vitamins in them that your body needs. You can even buy sodium free canned vegetables now and ones stored in broth. If you don’t have refrigeration or a freezer, canned vegetables are an option for you.
The same goes for fruit! You can find frozen berries of all sorts in the freezer section and also canned fruit can be high in sugars but when in a bind, sometimes it is a better option than nothing at all.
 Buy In Bulk
If this option is available for you try to buy things in bulk, they may be pricier in the moment but if they are non-perishable food items with a long shelf life they can last you long enough not to worry about buying them again for weeks or even months. Some bulk items that I recommend looking into for their long storage life would be: rice, pastas, dried beans, lentils, peanut butter/other nut butter products and cooking oils.
If you are able to afford buying the little boxing display sized of items sometimes that is for the best. At my personal grocery store you can buy a small pallet (for the shelf) of ramen for 5 dollars. Though it is not ideal, it is a good base to mix things in with as I spoke about in my previous post. I can also buy bulk of boxes of macaroni and cheese, boxed rice, boxed pasta sides and trays of soup. I have happily done this before because all of them had long shelf lives of a year or more in some cases and I still have them in my pantry ready for eating.
Proteins, Proteins, Proteins
Meat can be expensive we all know this, but luckily there are some affordable meat options! Depending on your local grocer they may have a display near the entrance of on sale meats, usually this is due to overstock or because they want to put fresher cuts up and need to get rid of their current stock. I have found 20 piece chicken legs for 3 dollars due to this as well as pork chops for 6.
If you do not have a sale item for overstocked meats, you need to compare your prices. Check what they have, sometimes you’ll still find sales or good deals. In general - chicken is the least expensive meat option. Sausages and ground meat tend to be less expensive than prime cuts. Beef in general tends to be more pricey while pork can range. Depending on your area, this may vary but if you have the storage for meats, fresh chicken and sausages are often your best bet for affordable choices.
Eggs are wonderful options as well, they can store a while if you know how to pick them. When selecting eggs, if you know you will eat them go for the larger containers like around 18 eggs. They tend to be a better deal than getting the smaller options though always check your eggs for cracks or wetness on the container. If you are worried how fresh they are pick up an egg and shake it near your ear, if it feels dense and doesn’t make much noise then its good. If it feels very liquid like and makes sloshing sounds its close to going rotten and should not be bought.
Canned meats are always a good option for people who do not have a place to store frozen or fresh meat. Canned tuna shouldn’t be eaten a lot but it can be a good source for protein. It can be mixed into macaroni, ramen, rice, casseroles and more to add flavor. Try to buy tuna canned in water, it tends to be healthier than that stored in oil.
Canned chicken is always a good option as well, it can be eaten more regularly than tuna and can be cooked up into soups, rice, stir fry and more! Canned ham, spam, canned beef, crab and salmon are other canned meats that are often easily found in different types of grocery stores.
Beans can be easily bought dried and in bulk which makes them a good choice especially for those who may not be fans of the meat options above. You can also buy them canned for easy cooking like in soups, chili and stews.
Sales and Coupons and Grocery Store Brand
Always look for sales, if you see items on sale for a great discount and its something you will eat and it can be stored well, stock up! It prevents you from having to buy it for more later. Coupons can come in the mail though it may appear as junk mail, if they are for the grocery store you shop at, give them a look. There may be some that may be worth while. Make sure you read their terms, some are only good during certain times or if a certain amount is spent. You can also check for product coupons which work on all stores because they come directly from the production company. These can often be found online or on the company’s website.
Sometimes brands are more expensive than the grocery store’s own brand. In these cases it may be a matter of taste in some things but with other things like canned vegetables, tuna, rice, noodles etc it can be almost a dollar cheaper to buy the grocery store’s brand with little to no difference with the brand named items. I personally always buy canned veggies that are from my local grocer as well as tuna and canned chicken - I have found they taste the same as the other brands but in the end saves me ten to twenty dollars after shopping.
Happy shopping everyone!

The Italian town where they eat 500-year-old meals (CNN) — The signs of the Renaissance are everywhere in Italy. Grand piazzas and palazzos. Metal-spiked doors. Looming archways. And, of course, all that ever-present art in the churches and galleries. But in one city, you also get a taste of the Renaissance every time you enter a restaurant. Ferrara, in the northern region of Emilia Romagna, was once home to the Estense court, or House of Este, which ruled the city from the 13th to the 18th centuries. The court, on the bank of the River Po, was one of the most formidable cultural powers during the Renaissance. Writers including Boiardo, Ariosto and Torquato Tasso were employed by the court, and artists such as Bellini, Mantegna and Piero della Francesco worked for the Este family in their domineering, moat-surrounded castle in the center of town. Their works have survived the centuries — but so have those of Cristoforo di Messisbugo, the court’s master of ceremonies and steward. Messisbugo was one of two celebrity chefs of the Renaissance, and his prowess with multicourse banquets to impress visiting heads of state and fill the bellies of the Este great and good, led to him writing one of the world’s earliest cookbooks. His tome, “Banchetti, composizioni di vivande e apparecchio generale” (“Banquets, Recipes and Table-laying”) was published in 1549, a year after he died. In it, as well as sample dinner menus and drinks pairings, he lists 300 recipes. And it’s thanks to Messisbugo that that, nearly five centuries later, the Ferraresi are still eating the Estes’ favorite meals. Because while every town in Italy has its signature dishes, Ferrara’s are straight from the cookbook of that 16th-century court. Yes, these dishes are real Salama da sugo, a centuries-old sausage and mash. Archivo Fotografico Provincia di Ferrara First things first. To enjoy Ferrara’s best known dishes, you don’t want to visit in summer. And you’ll want an elasticated waistband — because the signature food here is heavy. The city’s best known dishes are pasticcio — effectively a pie filled with macaroni cheese, meat ragu, and bechamel sauce — salama da sugo, a centuries-old kind of sausage and mash, and cappellacci di zucca, pumpkin-stuffed pasta. Each, though, has a twist. Pasticcio’s pie crust is sweet — yes, a meat pie in sweet pastry — while salama da sugo is a kilo-heavy salami that’s soaked in water for several days and then boiled for 10 hours to soften it into a spicy, spreadable meat that’s then served on mashed potato. Meanwhile, that super-sweet pumpkin pasta is usually slathered with meat ragu on top. All date back to the Renaissance. In fact, salama da sugo was said to be the favorite dish of Lucrezia Borgia — yes, that Lucrezia Borgia — who came to Ferrara in 1502 when she married the Duke, Alfonso d’Este. In fact, her famously long, blonde, curly locks are said to be the inspiration for another of Ferrara’s famous foods: the coppia, a spiraling, four-horned bread roll, like two croissants welded together. It was supposedly created by Messisbugo for a banquet in honor of Lucrezia. Sergio Perdonati is at work by 3 a.m. each morning to bake around 1,000 coppie per day, such is his devotion to the bread. “I think it’s one of the best breads in the world,” he says proudly. His grandfather, Otello, started the family bakery, Panificio Perdonati, 90 years ago — Sergio’s sourdough starter is Otello’s original, which has survived the bakery’s bombing in the Second World War, and two property moves. All the rolls are formed by hand and the dough is made using vintage mixing machines. Today, they’ve branched out into the sweet stuff — including panpepato, a cake also dating back to the Renaissance, made with chunks of almonds and orange peel, and covered in dark chocolate. Think Renaissance cocktail flairers Cappellacci di zucca — pumpkin-stuffed pasta. Archivo Fotografico Provincia di Ferrara People have always come to Ferrara to eat. “For sure, other courts had banquets, but Ferrara was particularly well known for them,” says Dr Federica Caneparo, a historian at the University of Chicago specializing in the culture of the Italian Renaissance. “It was especially refined, and food and banquets were a demonstration of power in front of their guests, some of whom would be ambassadors from other courts.” Italian courts had a raft of foodie professions, including the “scalco” (like Messisbugo, the supervisor), the “bottigliere” (an ancient sommelier) and the “trinciante” — the “carver”, who would put on a show for the entire table by carving meat or vegetables held in the air on a giant fork (think of a Renaissance cocktail flairer, only with knives and sides of beef instead of bottles). “They were trusted people close to the Duke,” says Caneparo. “Usually gentiluomini [nobles] by birth, or by merit. The scalco was responsible for organizing banquets and, on ordinary days, the household. The trinciante also had to be a trusted person — after all, he was right next to the master of the house with all those big knives.” Ferrara’s banquets were so famous, in fact, that poet Ludovico Ariosto included a description of one in his epic work “Orlando Furioso,” she says. And no wonder — she says that they were “spectacular, with music, dance, theater, and sculptures made of sugar or ice. They’d start with a play, or music, or both, and then they’d prepare the table.” And forget our single-figure tasting menus — these banquets could have well over 100 courses. Mac and cheese with a sugary twist Pasticcio is a pie filled with macaroni cheese, meat ragu, and bechamel sauce. Archivo Fotografico Provincia di Ferrara With so much food to choose from you can be sure that the dishes to have made it into modern Ferrarese cooking are the classics. At the modern Ca’ d’Frara restaurant, guests sit on hip mustard-colored chairs and cream banquettes to eat these centuries-old dishes. And those used to molecular cuisine might find Renaissance gastronomy equally boundary-pushing. “You often find this sweet-savory combination in the Estense cuisine — it’s unique,” says chef Elia Benvenuti. His pasticcio is an intriguing mix of a dense, meaty mac and cheese, wrapped in a cookie-sweet crust. You approach it with trepidation — how can this ever taste good? — but, somehow, it works. The sweet crust even seems to cut through the richness of the white ragu and bechamel sauce. “They’re symbols of the city — part of our DNA,” says chef of the traditional dishes. “I think Lucrezia [Borgia] would be happy,” adds his maître d’ wife, Barbara. Sweetening up the savory Sweet dishes include panpepato, a cake made with chunks of almonds and orange peel, and covered in dark chocolate Archivo Fotografico Provincia di Ferrara A few minutes’ walk away, locals are spilling into Ristorante Raccano, in a 15th-century cloister. Some are here for meat cooked in the oh-so-21st-century Josper oven — what owner Laura Cavicchio describes as “one of the most technically advanced grilling machines.” But others? They’re here for Lucrezia’s beloved salama da sugo. This is normally one of Ferrara’s more savory dishes — the salama is so heavily spiced, it hardly needs sugar. But Cavicchio and her children, Gabriella and Luca Montanari, like to take it right back to its Este roots by serving it with fried custard. The salama — made with different cuts of the pig including neck, belly, liver and tongue, with neck fat binding it all together — is seasoned with spices including cloves, cinnamon, red wine and Ferrara’s ubiquitous spice, nutmeg. It’s then aged in a pork casing for around a year, soaked in water for three days to soften it up, and then boiled for up to 10 hours. By that point, it’s as soft as jam, and chef Luca scoops it out, sprinkles it on top of potato mash, and adds mostarda (like a sweet chutney), plus the crowning glory: a cube of fried custard. “This isn’t a reinterpretation — in the old recipes, you find it served with custard,” says Cavicchio, who’s combed through Renaissance recipes and history books to make it authentic. Alongside modern dishes, they also serve “Crostino alla Messisbugo” — chicken liver and sauteed herbs pate, smeared on toasted bread. It’s another hit from the great man’s recipe book. Meanwhile, their cappellacci di zucca — handrolled pasta pillows, like oversized tortellini, filled with sweet pumpkin and nutmeg — come drenched in meat ragu and topped with parmesan cheese. Again, it’s a combination that shouldn’t work, but does. Alone, the cappellacci are offputtingly sweet to 21st-century tastes. Douse them with meat and cheese, though, and it slices through the sweetness, while amping up the taste of the sauce. Ferrrara was ruled by the powerful House of Este from the 13th to 18th centuries. Shutterstock The Estes’ signature “agrodolce” (sweet-savory) flavor was a conservation method, says Cavicchio. “People had vinegar, wine and salt. Marco Polo used it.” And although at the restaurant they use modern techniques, including that Josper oven, they want to keep the tastes as similar as possible to their heritage. “Over the years I’ve acquired a way of interpreting a recipe — I change the cooking techniques and some of the ingredients, but you need to know the product to do that,” says Cavicchio. Born just over the border in Veneto, where agrodolce flavors are also fundamental, she reads as many books about the Estes’ food habits as she can and experiments to keep the final product as authentic as possible. “Messisbugo was studious,” she says. “He invented recipes with the ingredients he had and the methods available to him. He didn’t have a fridge, so he used vinegar, wine and sugar. We’re much luckier, but I think he’d still appreciate what we do. For us, [the heritage] is a richness.” The modern day foodie courtiers Ferrara’s local bread is supposedly inspired by Lucrezia Borgia’s hair. Archivo Fotografico Provincia di Ferrara Like everywhere in Italy, restaurants and food heritage are important to the locals. Over at Da Noemi — a restaurant named after his grandmother, who opened up by herself in 1956 — 23-year-old Giovanni Matteucci has a hobby unlike many people his age. He buys antique copies of Ferrarese history and recipe books. “Sweetness was synonymous with the food of the rich,” he explains. “They used lots of spices and sugar to show off their wealth.” Even recipes for glammed-up egg yolk, and lasagne, had sugar and cinnamon on top, he says. And although he says it isn’t proven that Lucrezia Borgia really did love salama da sugo above all else, we do know that she adored apples — from the shopping list she compiled for her country estate. “She ordered loads of apples and different varieties,” he says. “It’s also said that she liked garlic.” At Da Noemi, Giovanni and his mom, Maria Cristina Borgazzi, run the kitchen. Brother Luca, meanwhile, is the maître d — the modern equivalent of Messisbugo. In fact, Luca takes his role as master of ceremonies so seriously that he’s decided that their reduced pandemic seating plan will stay forever. “We can pay more attention to the client this way,” he says. Speak to anyone in Ferrara, and they’ll wax lyrical about their pride in their food heritage. Yet, although Italians flock to the city to eat cappellacci, pasticcio, salama da sugo and coppie, the dishes have never really conquered the rest of Italy, as other regional dishes like pizza or tortellini have. Not that the Ferraresi care. “Ferrara is beautiful because of the Este family, and it’s the same for their dishes,” says Giovanni Matteucci. “People come to Ferrara for this, and we have to protect it. “Italy is based on its history. We don’t have Silicon Valley — this is our richness.” And, of course, their sweetness. Eating like Renaissance courtiers, here, is the most modern thing they can do. Day 34 – New Year’s Eve
J got up early and found good seats again. She had a nice breakfast at the à la carte restaurant, followed by a less pleasant reminder of Mexican Day. Bernie and Tamara began to send us a stream of pictures and videos of the start to their New Year’s celebration at Jade Mountain. At some point, we began to think they were rubbing it in. To their credit, Sandals organised three different spectacles for the evening at different areas of the resort and gave us a New Year’s hat, headband and party beads to wear that evening. However, still put off by Sandals’ refusal to let us leave the property and other nits, we booked a Hilton for our final night in St Lucia and, as S reminded J, the date of our anniversary. S and J are both relieved that we don’t have to tell people that we came to Sandals for our anniversary.
Inspired by Bernie and Tamar’s early start, we headed straight for the pool bar and ran into a lot of the people we’ve met over the trip, all at the same time. We ended up hanging out with the various couples (Thomas and Krista, Troy and Heather, and Kelly and Lisa) for a few rounds of drinks and chatting. J also ran into Simon and sent him the blog link. There was a tie-dye T-shirt station today which was quite popular (see picture below). S and C wisely decided to grab lunch, crêpes, which were quite good. J took a pass and stayed at the pool bar. J had been doing research that morning on the availability / price of cocktails in the Maldives (it wasn’t pretty). Concerned about the potential scarcity of frozen drinks in the Maldives, J overdid it (see picture of the Bob Marley cocktail below) and decided to take a break at the beach.
We eventually headed back upstairs to freshen up and get ready for New Year’s Eve. Unfortunately, S and J did not feel so hot. We thought a quick nap might due the trick. Expecting to be going out, C put on makeup and dressed up in a royal blue, silk jumpsuit. She looked stunning. She came by to have some sparkling wine in our room. We called A, S’ other daughter for a nice chat. A is still quarantining. We also spoke to J’s mom to find out if S had tetanus. It sounds like he doesn’t. S felt too unwell to come out, so J and C went out to grab some food at the 11pm buffet. Expecting a large, raucous party, C and J were surprised to see a largely empty pool area. It was raining on and off and the rain had driven the revellers elsewhere. The fireworks display had also been cancelled last-minute at all resorts on the island by the St Lucian government.
The 11pm buffet was actually the 11:30pm buffet. Numerous hungry guests were turned away as the staff were putting the finishing touches on it. J and C ran into Thomas and Krista and joined them at their table. By the time the buffet finally opened, J was a lot hungrier than she’d thought after skipping lunch. She ordered a cheeseburger, fried chicken, macaroni & cheese and pasta. To their credit, the Sandals chef did not blink an eye. C had a more moderate meal of fried chicken, steak and some salad. They then decided to sample every single dessert on the menu (see picture below).
Thomas, Krista, C and J had a funny conversation about the various bouts of tummy problems that have been had at Sandals. Krista said this is a common phenomenon and thinks it’s related to the tap water. Only then did they realise they’d all just downed a full glass of tap water during the meal. Thomas and Krista went off for some private time just before midnight, so C and J rang in the New Year over their desserts and then called it an early night. After all, there are sunloungers waiting to be claimed in the morning.

Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection Micro-bloggery Round-up
Tumblr media
A very Zwei Q&A with editor Nick!
1) I've got a huge backlog of games. Why should I bump Zwei to the front of the queue?
It's been a great year in videogames - perhaps TOO great, if my own backlog stack is any indication, and I have no doubt that many (most?) of you are in the same boat. But every now and then, we'll get our hands on a game and it sort of effortlessly floats to the front of the queue, like it bought an expensive theme park pass. I'm under no illusion that Zwei will be "that game" for everyone, but for some of you, it might be! Let's look at a couple reasons why Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection might be just the game you've been looking for (but didn't realize it)!
First, it's got a great "medium" length. You won't be rolling the credits in 10 hours, but it's also not an 80+ hour bear where you just look at it and sigh and think, "I know I'll love this, but...when will I find the time to play it?" With Zwei: II's 30-ish hour average playtime, it offers a fulfilling action RPG experience you can sink your teeth into, but you won't need to cancel all your plans for the next month to make time for it.
Second, Zwei represents a heretofore-unknown prong of Falcom's action RPG legacy. Falcom is famous for Ys, an action RPG series that has spanned decades at this point, and other titles in a roughly similar vein, like Brandish and Xanadu - in fact, it's been joked that Falcom's "XYZ" is Xanadu, Ys, and Zwei. But unlike many of their other offerings, nothing from the Zwei series has ever been officially available outside Japan...until now. As Falcom's last/most recent PC-exclusive title (made in 2008), it straddles a fun line between old-school charm and modern conveniences and storytelling. It's the Falcom quality you know, but in a world distinctly different from their other games.
Third, Zwei is made to be easy to pick up and spend some time with without having to invest a ton of time in a sitting. Dungeons are generally broken up into discrete "branches," each of which can be undertaken on its own, with save points in between and the ability to fast-travel between any save point you've been to at least once. If you've got 30 minutes, you can get something done in Zwei. If you've got an hour, you can do even more! The game reflects modern sensibilities regarding variances in player engagement and time commitment, and that makes it really easy to pick up whenever you feel like playing.
If any of that piques your interest, I'd invite you to consider bumping Zwei to the front of your gaming queue.
Tumblr media
2) I love Falcom stuff like Ys and Trails, but this one seems...a little bit different. How does it compare? Will I like it?
As a Falcom action RPG, Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection fits into a long legacy of storied games, and ultimately, as fans, we can't help but draw comparisons. But I think overall, these are helpful comparisons to make, because in doing so, you can see where a game like Zwei 2 fits into Falcom's growth as a developer over time.
The original Zwei was released in 2001. It's more of a straight dungeon-crawler than its sequel, The Ilvard Insurrection, is, but it featured the mechanic that would go on to be the series' calling card: two main characters, one specializing in melee attacks and one specializing in magic, who could be swapped between at any time with the tap of a button. However, Japanese fans would have to wait until 2008 to play the second game in the series.
Tom, our resident Falcom historian, slots the Zwei series into a gameplay lineage that also includes Gurumin (made in between the first and second Zwei games) and Nayuta no Kiseki (made after the second Zwei game). That separates it from the gameplay stylings of series like Ys or Xanadu, while still feeling pretty easy to get into for anyone who's played those games before. Visually, Gurumin probably has the most "Zwei DNA" of any of Falcom's other titles, as it features gameplay and even visuals that feel like they could easily have been part of a Zwei game.
The combat in Zwei is not as technical as in the Ys games - it takes more of a "big picture" approach, in the sense that often, your biggest advantages can be gained not in one's mastery of controls or precise techniques, but in when you choose to swap between characters to chain their actions, and how you position yourself within spaces and relative to the enemies. Personally, I feel like this lends a bit more of an "arcade beat-em-up" feel to Zwei's action RPG combat, so if that sounds like your kind of thing, well, get ready to grab your spoon and dig in.
Tumblr media
3) I've heard Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection has an unusual leveling system. What can you tell me about macaroni gratin and the power it bestows?
Well, macaroni gratin is delicious, and anyone who says otherwise is a just lookin' to foment some dissent at the lunch tables. BRING IT.
...Er, what I mean to say is, the Zwei series' leveling system is one of its most unique aspects. Instead of getting EXP from killing monsters, you gain EXP from eating food. This same food serves double duty as the main consumable items you use to heal yourself when you take damage, and you'll get plenty of it as you go through the game. It might sound weird, but it works surprisingly well, and sets up some interesting scenarios. If you want to strongarm your way through dungeons, you can be more proactive about eating food to gain EXP and keep on par with or a little above each dungeon's recommended level (as displayed by a metal plate on the floor before every dungeon branch). If you want to give yourself more of a challenge, you can use food only when you need to heal, and treat the EXP you gain as a residual bonus.
You can even just decide to enforce minimal food-usage (or not at all) and see how low of a level you can go through the game with, if you want to give yourself a real challenge. The game doesn't have standard difficulty levels, but the way in which you use food sort of lets you scale the game's difficulty as you see fit.
In addition, the game's foods fit into four different "tiers," and you can trade in ten of any one type of food for one of the "evolution" of that food in the next tier, with the higher-tier food giving 150% more EXP than 10 of the food that came before. It might sound confusing, but it's really not. Here's a quick example. I've got ten plates of Pasta Carbonara. Each one heals 28 HP and gives 2250 EXP when consumed. But, if I take those ten plates of Pasta Carbonara and trade 'em in at the restaurant counter, I'll get one plate of delicious Macaroni Gratin, which heals 38 HP (not a huge upgrade there), but gives a whopping 33,750 EXP when consumed. As you go further in the game, upgrading is more about maximizing your EXP gain versus raw healing amounts. If more raw healing is what you want, though, it may be worth NOT trading food up, because those ten plates of Pasta Carbonara can heal 280 HP - somewhere between two and three full life bars of health at high levels!

4) Got any advice for players? Must see or do stuff?
My best advice for players is to really think about the different types of magic Alwen has and what they're good for. Some magic, like fire, is all about just blasting enemies and puttin' the hurt on them. Other types of magic are, on their face, a bit weaker: ice launches only single shots that have a more limited range, wind whips up a small tornado that sweeps forward - but when you think about all the tools at your disposal, and especially how you can position or lock down enemies (known colloquially as "crowd control"), options that aren't just MAXIMUM DAMAGE BAM RIGHT IN THE BACK OF THE HEAD WITH A FOLDING CHAIR really shine. In fact, if you decide to spelunk through the optional dungeon, you'll need these strategies, because brute forcing your way will only take you so far.
Another piece of advice is to take the time to actually talk to NPCs. I admit, it's a common thing to hear from a localization editor ("Please read this dialogue that I edited!"), but Zwei is a game with a very clear through-line, and if you want to, you can stay on that track, never really go places when it's not necessary to, and finish the game with little trouble. But to do so would be denying yourself the chance to learn more about the amusing people who populate the game's world. Taking a page from the Trails series, Zwei has NPCs who often change up what they say after both major and minor game events, and the NPCs have their own individual stories that develop as the game goes on. It's worth your while to poke around and visit people, because there are many unique conversation snippets in the game that only play when you talk to someone at a particular phase of the game, and often there will even be differences in the dialogue depending on whether Ragna or Alwen is active as your lead character.
Tumblr media
5) Since you’re known for your puns, give us your best shot. Which ones are you most proud of?
Surprisingly, Zwei: The Ilvard Insurrection isn't particularly full of puns! Zwei: II's style of humor leans much more toward pithy commentary and snarky asides, often made from one partner to the other in the middle of a conversation, or just "thought aloud." Cheekiness seems to be a popular personality trait in the land of Ilvard, as the townsfolk and even the animals (...if you can talk with the animals) get in on the action. Pokkle, one half of the first Zwei game's protagonist duo, is an inveterate punster, and while he does appear in this game in a cameo role, he's not firing off puns left and right here. However...you can choose him as an opponent in the game's battle arena, and if you select Ragna to fight him and win, upon being beaten, Pokkle will moan, "I just got Ragna-rocked!" It's voiced, too, so enjoy that!

“If you've been to a grocery store's dairy aisle lately, you've probably picked up on the fact that Greek yogurt is becoming pretty darn popular. At Greatist, we think this stardom is well earned: We consider the stuff a superfood thanks to its high protein and probiotic content. But frankly, we’re getting a little sick of the classic Greek yogurt and granola combo that’s been a staple of our breakfasts since who-knows-when. So we’ve rounded up 51 healthy recipes from around the web that use Greek yogurt in surprising, delicious ways — and not just for breakfast (okay, we’ve got some breakfast recipes too — but we guarantee that they’re equally surprising).

Best Vegan Restaurants in St. Louis
How do you describe your ‘diet’? I don’t mean how you are trying to lose weight or monitor your eating, but rather your choice of being intentional about the foods you put in your body. It could be that you simply avoid one food group, or are fully committed to a particular lifestyle like gluten-fee, keto, paleo or vegan.
It is estimated that there has been a 600% increase in people identifying as vegans – or following a plant based diet – in the last three years. There was a time that being vegan made it more than a small challenge to eat out.
But not anymore.
Since finding great vegan food can be a challenge in any city, I thought it would be fun to explore the options in my own backyard.
In St. Louis, a city known for toasted raviolis and gooey butter cake, you might think that vegan choices would be few and far between. However, there are a surprising number of vegan restaurants in St. Louis! I’ve put together a selection of some of the best for you.
Best Vegan Restaurants in St. Louis
Lulu’s Local Eatery – With an incredible 1600+ recommendations and 4.9 out of 5 stars on Facebook, Lulu’s definitely ranks highly on this list of the best vegan options in St. Louis. Their menu offers a variety of starters, salads, and entrées, and includes gluten-free and nut-free choices (although they are not a gluten-free or nut-free site). They even have a kid’s menu, something that can be hard to find in vegan restaurants. They also offer a selection of local beers, kombucha, and vegan baked goods. The Ping-Pong Bar upstairs offers a bit of fun for your day, and cocktails after 5 pm. It’s one of the least expensive restaurants on the list.
Pura Vegan – Pura Vegan has a simple and straight-forward menu, but some of their favorites are great for those who miss some non-vegan food choices, including pizza bagels and cornbread. In addition to traditional café food such as waffles, macaroni and cheese (Mackincheese for this restaurant), and tacos, Pura Vegan has a juice and smoothie bar for quick refueling. Stop in for a yoga class and leave with a Popeye’s Choice juice to get you ready for the rest of your day. Pura Vegan also has events starting in fall of 2019.
Fred and Ricky’s – A must for breakfast lovers, Fred and Ricky’s has a versatile menu with offerings such as pancakes, banana bread, and muffins. Entrees include pasta, enchiladas, and a mushroom stroganoff that will leave you wanting more. Don’t forget dessert; Fred and Ricky’s serves up cookies, pudding, and brownies. They have two locations, and their foods are available in several other establishments around St. Louis including some Schnuck’s locations and the St. Louis Children’s Hospital. It’s a bit of a different model; everything is pre-made, so you take and heat. That makes it great for when you need to bring lunch to the office or want to include vegan options at a celebration.
Tree House Vegetarian Restaurant – With both vegetarian and vegan offerings, Tree House has plenty of food to please everyone in your party. All dinner items are prepared vegan; they also have brunch on Saturday and Sunday starting at 10 am. The donuts are not to be missed. The dinner menu includes mushroom-stuffed ravioli, jambalaya, and chicken fried seitan. They have an extensive bar, with happy hour from 5:30 until 6 pm. You can dine on their outdoor patio during the warmer months. You can easily make reservations from their website.
Pizza Head – Pizza Head is also vegetarian and vegan, offering vegan meats and a vegan pie/slices. Pizza Head offers delivery through Postmates. Their Facebook page is filled with recommendations, with 4.9 out of 5 stars. The restaurant is often busy, but clearly worth it.  Everyone raves about the vegan pepperoni pizza and they offer a small selection of domestic beers. It’s a casual place, with punk posters on the walls, perfect for Friday night get-togethers. Outdoor seating is available.
Bombay Food Junkies – Bombay Food Junkies has got it all. This is an a la carte restaurant open Thursday through Sunday, with a food truck making appearances throughout town every day except Monday, and they cater. Be sure to sign up for their weekly newsletter to keep on top of their schedule, which can vary. They use no animal products and have dairy free cheesecake. Their restaurant menu items include Butter Chicken, wraps, and Samosas. Stop by the food truck for lunch of garlic naan and hummus or Vada Pav. The food is spicy (they offer mild to hot), but flavorful, and inspired by Indian street food. The owners are extremely knowledgeable and happy to answer questions, so it’s great for new vegans or for vegetarians who are considering making vegan their lifestyle choice.
Seedz Café – Seedz Café has 4.5 stars on Yelp. They have a large menu featuring sandwiches, burgers, Mexican food, and BBQ. Their Sunday brunch is popular, with menu items including avocado toast and a breakfast sandwich that are only available during the brunch. They also serve juices, smoothies, and local craft beers. They have a variety of menu options that are suitable for kids as well as adults. Get there early on the weekends to grab some of their vegan donuts; they sell out fast.  Be sure to stop by their Facebook page for some incredible pictures of their delicious food!. They are sure to get your mouth watering.
Sweet Art – Yelp has Sweet Art labeled as a bakery, but their menu includes everything that makes a vegan restaurant great. Their breakfast menu includes vegan Belgian Waffles and cinnamon rolls. For lunch try a house-made sweet burger or Bell Hook’s Nachos. Sweet Art’s official bakery includes brownies, bars, cookies, and cakes. Some of their menu items are vegetarian, but the menu is clear about which options are vegan. They offer vegan boxed lunch options, making them perfect for take out or as an option for providing vegan lunches for office meetings. Their Yelp rating is 4.5 and there are more than 450 photos for you to check out. They aren’t open late, and only serve lunch until 3 pm, so make them a day option.
If you’re looking for great vegan meals, starting with this list will give you lots of options. Most of them are sustainable and a few can even be considered fine dining. All of them are reasonably priced.
There are many other restaurants that aren’t strictly vegan/vegetarian, but that offer vegan choices, or can make vegan substitutions. For many vegans, this isn’t an appropriate or sustainable choice, so I didn’t include those restaurants in my list. However, if it doesn’t bother you to go to a restaurant that serves animal products, a bit of research on Facebook should give you most of the available choices.
Happy dining.

Cooking Ideas For Creating Different Flavored Pancakes
You have to learn a bit about cooking in order to produce excellent dishes. The following article will teach you the secrets behind what is involved in being a good cook By implementing these tips, you will learn exactly what you can do. Slice meats into thin strips on the bias when prepping for stir-fry. This can take a lot of time and be hard. Take the meat out of the freezer when it is slightly frozen and cut at a forty five degree angle, do it across the meat's grain. Your spices should be stored in any area that is dark and cool. Your spices will not last as long if they are exposed to light, heat or humidity. When a spice is placed in a cool area with very little light, its life is extended and it will taste better. You'll taste the difference in your dishes. Consider adding oil to your pan's side, rather than in the middle, so that your food is already heated when they come into contact. This also maximizes the flavor of whatever you are cooking. Slicing meat into thin even strips is easier when the meat is partially frozen. This technique is especially useful for the meat slicing styles typically used in Asian cuisine. If the meat is partially frozen, a sharp knife will create perfect thin strips, as it will be less likely to tear or stretch the meat fibers. Allow the meat to thaw prior to cooking though, so that it can cook evenly.
Tumblr media
When making food for someone whom you want to impress, stick to a familiar dish that you are confident preparing. Never prepare an unfamiliar recipe or try to use a different ingredient than you are used to. This makes cooking less stressful. Many people like to cook with apples towards the end of the year, but if they aren't stored properly they can spoil. Apples will rot if they are stored in warm, dry air, so make sure to keep them in plastic bags in a cool place. Watch them, because it will only take one rotten apple to ruin the others.
Tumblr media
When storing baking ingredients, such as flour and sugar, be sure to store them in air-tight food containers. Putting your food in these kinds of containers will prevent insects from getting into the food and prevent them from going bad from air exposure. These can be bought at almost any store. Whenever you season your food, try seasoning it slowly rather than all at once. This makes the flavor of the food the best it can be and you will get everything out of each individual ingredient. Measure the amount of cooking oil you use! If you take the time to measure how much oil you use when cooking, you can better control how much fat is incorporated into your dishes. Use a measuring cup instead of just pouring straight out of the bottle. This is the best way to monitor how much oil you use. Fresh garlic is ideal when preparing dishes that call for garlic. Usually, fresher garlic will have a sweeter taste. Check the freshness of garlic cloves by inspecting the skin. If it is bruised, soft, or shriveled, it is not fresh. If you have decided to serve salad with the meal that you are preparing for guests, be sure to serve the salad dry and serve the dressing on the side. There are many people who prefer little to no dressing on a salad. If you allow everyone to apply their dressings on their own it will allow them to have the amount they like. Get different kinds of dressings to leave them more choices. Always begin your cooking with utensils that are spotlessly clean. If food is left behind on the utensils after washing, this may spoil what you are planning to cook. This can also cause bacteria to spread. With a simple dish like mac and cheese, you really need to follow the recipe to get the best results. Remember that the makers of your mac and cheese designed these instructions with the best possible result in mind. A solid spoon should be used when serving the macaroni masterpiece. Try spicing the macaroni with pepper. Having the prep work done a day in advance will make the cooking process less stressful. You can double-check the availability of everything required, get your ingredients together, chop herbs and vegetables, and measure out quantities in advance. You can reduce a lot of recipes to a matter of mixing everything together and putting heat to it if you do good advance preparation. Sprinkle salt liberally into the boiling water that is used to cook pasta. The seasonings in the water will infuse the pasta thoroughly. If you try to salt the pasta after it is already cooked it will not hold the seasoning as well. To improve your pasta sauce, put aside some of the water used during the cooking of the pasta. Measure out one quarter cup of water, and put it to the side. When you are ready to mix your sauce and pasta together, incorporate some of this water. The starch from the pasta water will add body and a "creaminess" to your sauce through amalgamation. If you want to make salsa for later, make sure you clean your diced onions thoroughly. Fresh onions emit a sulfurous gas. This gas can ruin your fresh salsa. You will remove the gas once you rinse them and dry them off. If you are going to have a barbecue, then prepare your grill in advance so that you can start grilling right away. The charcoal will need to burn about 30 minutes before your coals are hot enough to start grilling. The coals should have an ash covering, and this means they are at medium heat. This is the best temperature for grilling. As was stated at the beginning of this article, there are tips and secrets to learn to become a good cook. Some lucky people seem to have a natural gift for cooking, while others can use all of the advice they can get their hands on. The information found in the article should have helped you learn what you need to do to be a great cook.

Where To Grab Food For A Picnic (Even If It’s On Your Floor) added to Google Docs
Where To Grab Food For A Picnic (Even If It’s On Your Floor)
After months of bad weather, it’s finally nice outside. And according to both Yogi Bear and Monet, picnics are a lot of fun. We don’t argue with cartoon bears or French impressionists, so here are 12 restaurants offering takeout and delivery options that are perfect for a picnic - whether it’s at a park, or even on the balcony or floor of your apartment.
Featured In The Ultimate Chicago Delivery & Takeout Guide See all our guides the spots  Sandy Noto All Together Now $ $ $ $ American  in  Ukrainian Village $$$$ 2119 W Chicago Ave 7.8 /10
This little restaurant and wine shop has quite a few things that are great for a picnic, like various snacks, cheese (and things to put cheese on), pickles, and tinned fish. You can also ask them to make you a cheese plate, and then pick a bottle of wine to go with it.
Publican Quality Meats (PQM) $ $ $ $ American ,  Cafe/Bakery  in  Fulton Market ,  West Loop $$$$ 825 W Fulton Market 8.2 /10
This cafe’s menu is also incredibly picnic-friendly. You can order prepared food like sandwiches and salads, bread, cheese, and they even have a virtual butcher shop where you can get deli meat and sausages. In other words, this whole place is basically a virtual picnic basket.
 Sandy Noto Tempesta Market $ $ $ $ Sandwiches ,  Deli  in  West Town $$$$ 1372 W Grand Ave 8.2 /10
Along with having some of Chicago’s best sandwiches (the Beet Street, with beets, apples, and almond butter, is one of the best in the city), Tempesta Market is also a deli and specialty store. This means you can get lots of meat and cheese, along with prepared foods like potato and pasta salads.
 Sandy Noto Cafe Cancale $ $ $ $ Seafood ,  French  in  Wicker Park $$$$ 1576 N Milwaukee Ave 7.8 /10
It’s pretty safe to say that none of us are spending time on the French seaside anytime soon. But we’ve been pretending Lake Michigan is an ocean for years, and Cafe Cancale is here to help our delusions along. This seafood-focused spot has a virtual “French market” offering bread, butter, cheese, and meats, along with tinned fish and fresh seafood. Do you want to shuck oysters on your living room floor? Only you know the answer to that question.
 Christina Slaton Big Star $ $ $ $ Tacos ,  Tex-Mex  in  Wicker Park $$$$ 1531 N Damen Ave 7.6 /10
Big Star’s huge perfect-for-day-drinking patio is one of the most likable in the city. So nothing feels more like “it’s finally summer” than sitting outside with one of their margaritas, fresh chips, guacamole, and some tacos. Luckily you can recreate this yourself because all of those things are available in the “patio pack,” which you can order for carryout or delivery.

Sure, you can go to Whole Foods for all your cellophane-wrapped sandwich, prepared food, and salad needs. Or, you can just order from the market at Beatrix. They even have chocolates and fancy gummies that look like little sharks, both of which are scientifically proven to make picnics better.
 Sandy Noto J.P. Graziano Grocery & Sub Shop $ $ $ $ American ,  Sandwiches  in  West Loop $$$$ 901 W Randolph St 8.0 /10
This Italian grocery store and sub shop has been in the West Loop for over 80 years, which is almost how long it feels like we’ve been in lockdown. And JP Graziano is a fantastic option for sandwiches and things like potato and pasta salads. The Italian sandwich is our favorite, but you can’t go wrong with anything (the muffaletta is also excellent). Order a cannoli, too, while you’re at it.
 Sandy Noto Paulette's Public Market $ $ $ $ Sandwiches  in  Pilsen $$$$ 1221 W 18th St Not
Rated
Yet
This Pilsen market has meat, cheese, a deli counter with prepared foods like salads and sandwiches, and a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables. Because you know what your picnic spread needs? Some grapes.
Table, Donkey and Stick $ $ $ $ Scandinavian ,  German ,  Eastern European  in  Logan Square $$$$ 2728 W. Armitage Ave. Not
Rated
Yet
Since the lockdown started, we’ve been ordering the great pizzas that Table Donkey & Stick suddenly started making when they pivoted to carryout and delivery. But it’s important not to forget their roots as a European cafe. Here you’ll find fantastic charcuterie, cheese, crusty bread, and small plates like latkes and salads, along with wine and beer. But if eating Sicilian pan-style pizza on a blanket in Palmer Square park sounds perfect, by all means, order that too.
Christina Slaton Gene’s Sausage Shop $$$$ 4750 N Lincoln Ave
Yes, you should definitely get an assortment of sausages from Gene’s in Logan Square. But don’t forget to pick up some cheese, crackers, and basically anything else you expect to find in one of those Pepperidge Farm holiday gift baskets. Pair all of that with some beer and macaroni salad, and head straight over to Winnemac Park.
Lem's BBQ House $ $ $ $ BBQ  in  Greater Grand Crossing $$$$ 311 E 75th St Not
Rated
Yet
Lem’s is a classic counter-service BBQ spot (it’s been around since 1954) with fantastic rib tips, hot links, and fried chicken. Cold fried chicken is an old-school picnic staple, so pick up some of that along with some of their potato salad and coleslaw.
 Christina Slaton Green Street Smoked Meats $ $ $ $ American ,  BBQ  in  West Loop $$$$ 112 N Green St 7.9 /10
One silver lining of the current situation is that no one will have to endure a company picnic this summer. That said, as awkward as a three-legged race with your boss can be, sometimes the food is pretty good. The Texas-style BBQ at Green Street reminds us of the best part of those picnics. You’ll find meats like ribs, brisket, and pulled pork, and excellent sides like broccoli salad, cornbread, baked beans, and elotes.

22 Places For Delivery When It All Becomes Too Much (2) added to Google Docs
22 Places For Delivery When It All Becomes Too Much (2)
Days are turning into weeks. Weeks are turning into months. And you’re turning into Winnie the Pooh, in that you now eat food straight from the jar and are, like, never wearing pants. And as you type “LMAO” into yet another empty Slack conversation while sitting in your even emptier apartment, you start to wonder: What the hell are we all doing? Does any of this have any meaning? And also... when was the last time I saw my wallet?
And while we can’t answer any of those existential questions (although, have you checked your car?), or shake you out of this Philosophy 101/shower thoughts/stoned undergrad state-of-mind, we do have a few restaurant recommendations that’ll at least relieve some of that pesky nihilism. From old-school delis to decadent French burgers and just straight-up fried cheese, here are 22 Places For Delivery When It All Becomes Too Much.
All restaurants featured on The Infatuation are selected by our editorial team. 22 Places For Delivery When It All Becomes Too Much is presented by Uber Eats. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, supporting our local restaurant community has never been more important. Uber Eats customers can now give directly to the restaurants they love at checkout. 100% will go to the restaurant. Order now to support. See app for details.
Featured In The Ultimate LA Delivery & Takeout Guide Check out all our guides THE SPOTS  Jakob Layman Antico $ $ $ $ Pasta ,  Italian  in  Koreatown ,  Larchmont $$$$ 4653 Beverly Blvd 8.0 /10
How does Antico get their ice cream to be so impossibly smooth? Is it witchcraft? Divine intervention? A super-expensive ice cream machine in the back? Sadly, we’ll never know. And we’re OK with that. It’s just like that one saying, “Never look a gift horse in the mouth.” Except this time, the horse is a $20 pint of strawberry ice cream. Do with that what you will. Antico is available for takeout and delivery - call (323) 510-3093 to order, or find them on various delivery platforms.
 Order delivery   Jakob Layman Back Home In Lahaina $ $ $ $ Hawaiian  in  Carson $$$$ 519 E Carson St 7.7 /10
Nietzsche believed that there was no objective meaning or structure in the world, except for what we give it. And if that’s true, then we’re pushing all of our “things that matter” chips to the center and going all-in on Back Home In Lahaina. Takeout from this Hawaiian restaurant is basically the closest thing to a vacation you can get these days, with tremendous dishes like poke on fried wonton chips, coconut-filled haupia cheesecake, and, our favorite, the loco moco - two scoops of rice, a fried egg, and a hamburger patty, all smothered in gravy. Back Home In Lahaina is available for takeout and delivery, call (310) 835-4014, or find them on most major delivery platforms.
 Holly Liss Badmaash $ $ $ $ Indian  in  West Hollywood $$$$ 418 N. Fairfax Ave. 8.0 /10
It’s an age-old existential question, one that’s plagued philosophers since the beginning of time: If life is meaningless, then how does something like chicken tikka poutine exist? Salty, savory, and covered in cheese curds, this dish from Badmaash is basically Priority Mail heaven-sent. Yes, it’s as messy and caloric as it sounds, but when something tastes this good, who even cares? Plus, the rest of their menu, from saag paneer to chili cheese naan, is also available to-go. Both locations of Badmaash (Fairfax and Downtown) are available for takeout and delivery via various platforms.
 Jakob Layman Brent's Deli $ $ $ $ American ,  Deli ,  Eastern European  in  Northridge $$$$ 19565 Parthenia St 8.5 /10
If there were any restaurant in LA that could convince us of the existence of a pure, intrinsic good, it would be Brent’s. This iconic Jewish deli has been serving The Valley since the ’60s, and has over 650 dishes on its menu that are guaranteed to bring you back from any existential spiral. The matzo ball soup is a must, the stuffed cabbage is too, and make sure to get at least one order of their black pastrami Reuben - served on rye and topped with crunchy sauerkraut and house-made Russian dressing, this massive sandwich can go head-to-head with any pastrami in town, and most importantly, can be served with curly fries. Both their Westlake and Northridge locations are available for takeout and delivery, call (805) 557-1882 or (818) 886-5679, or find them on various delivery platforms.
 Jakob Layman Chengdu Taste $ $ $ $ Chinese  in  Alhambra $$$$ 828 W Valley Blvd 8.7 /10
The last couple weeks have been especially difficult (ex. we finally had to make peace with the fact that Florence Pugh is dating Zach Braff, and like, not as a bit), but things are looking up. Chengdu Taste is back. This is some of the best, most mouth-numbing Sichuan food you’ll find outside of southwest China, so it’s time to order all of the mapo tofu, cumin lamb, and dan dan noodles your little credit card can handle. Or, you know what? Hit your limit. Nothing matters. Chengdu Taste is available for takeout and delivery, call (626) 588-2284 or find them on various delivery platforms.
Order delivery   Jakob Layman Cilantro Mexican Grill $ $ $ $ Tacos ,  Mexican  in  North Hollywood $$$$ 7214 Whitsett Ave 8.2 /10
Things that are bad for quelling nihilism: Gas stations (expensive prices, fossil-fuels that are horrible for the environment, constant reminders that much like the dinosaurs, the human race will one day cease to exist, etc.). Things that are good for quelling nihilism: Mexican grills located in North Hollywood Chevrons. In other words, Cilantro. They’ve got some of the best burritos in town, from ones served enchilada-style and filled with house carne asada to an off-the-menu surf and turf, which comes packed with Angus beef. The choice is yours… or is it? Cilantro Mexican Grill is available for takeout and delivery - call (818) 765-7998, pick-up in-store, or find them on various delivery platforms.
 Krystal Thompson Dulan's Soul Food Kitchen $ $ $ $ Southern  in  Inglewood $$$$ 202 E Manchester Blvd 8.3 /10
Dulan’s Soul Food is a certified Inglewood institution. And while, for the purpose of this guide, the actual existence of “souls” is up in the air, there’s no denying the pure, uninhibited joy that comes from digging into their plates of pork chops, fried chicken, and incredible macaroni & cheese. Don’t worry, you’ll still have plenty of time for that “immortal soul” discussion for later. Dulan’s Soul Food Kitchen is available for takeout, call (310) 671-3345 (or (323) 296-3034 for their Crenshaw location) or find them on various delivery platforms.
 Golden Deli Golden Deli Vietnamese Restaurant $ $ $ $ Vietnamese  in  San Gabriel $$$$ 815 W Las Tunas Dr 8.1 /10
Back in the olden days - a.k.a. “February” - this immensely popular Vietnamese restaurant was known to have one of the busiest lunch rushes in the San Gabriel Valley. And for a good reason - their fantastic beef pho is flat-out fantastic, and their drip-filter coffee is strong as hell. But what has been our move, and will always be our move, is to get the #89 broken rice plate, which comes with shrimp paste, grilled beef, and two egg rolls. Looks like even in quarantine, old habits die hard. Golden Deli is available for takeout, call (626) 308-0803 to order.
Jakob Layman Hotville Chicken $ $ $ $ American ,  Southern  in  Baldwin Hills $$$$ 4070 Marlton Ave Not
Rated
Yet
In a dark, depressing world filled with virus protesters and 30-year-olds on TikTok, this fried chicken joint on Crenshaw might just be one of the last good things on Earth. Owned and operated by the same family as Nashville’s iconic Prince’s Hot Chicken, the Southern food here is truly fantastic, like their fried catfish sandwiches, butter-heavy mac & cheese, and super-crunchy, super-hot chicken that’s just as good as anything you’d get in Tennessee. We’re marking this one down as Hotville: 1, bone-crushing nihilism: 0. Available for takeout and delivery, call (323) 792-4835 or find them on various delivery platforms.
 Jakob Layman Jame Enoteca $ $ $ $ Italian  in  El Segundo $$$$ 241 Main St. 8.3 /10
Despite how bleak things may look from the one window in your apartment, there are still things that matter in the world. Example A: Bowen Yang on SNL. Example B: Literally all of the food at Jame Enoteca. From the outside, this tiny El Segundo Italian restaurant might not look like much, but everything from their incredible kale salad to pesto mandilli that that feels like silk (but tastes of creamy basil and pine nuts) is on par with what’d you’d get at a big, fancy restaurant, but at a fraction of the price. And when you’re saving that much money - does it even matter if free will exists? Jame Enoteca is available for takeout and delivery (with 40% off wine!), call (310) 648-8554 or find them on most major delivery platforms.
 Order delivery   Jongewaard's Bake n Broil Jongewaard's Bake N Broil $ $ $ $ Diner ,  Dessert  in  Long Beach $$$$ 3697 Atlantic Avenue 8.4 /10
You’ve baked the bread. Put scallions in a jar. Hell, you’ve even washed all of the loose change in your house by hand in a frenzied attempt to distract yourself. But yet, you’re still left with the overwhelming feeling that existence is chaos and not one thing in this world actually matters. This is serious - it’s time to bring in the chicken pot pie. Specifically, the one from this old-school diner in Long Beach, where chunks of roasted chicken, carrots and peas are mixed in a creamy filling and tucked into a buttery, flaky crust. Will it take away your increasing fear that life is nothing but an empty void? Probably not. But it’s also harder to feel it when you’re eating chicken pot pie. Get the red velvet cake for later. Jongewaard’s Bake N Broil is available for takeout, call (562) 595-0396 to order.
 Jakob Layman Myung Dong Kyoja (명동교자) $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3630 Wilshire Blvd 8.2 /10
When the world is bad, and your molar is for sure rotting, the only correct course of action is to order Korean soups (and probably see a healthcare professional). From cold, spicy noodles served with a biting chili sauce to warm bowls of kalguksu, or knife-cut noodles made from wheat flour, everything on the menu at Myung Dong Kyoja is perfect for when you need a little extra comfort. Or, let’s be honest, a lot of extra comfort. Myung Dong Kyoja is available for takeout and delivery, call (213) 385-7789 or find them on most major delivery platforms.
 Order delivery   Jakob Layman Papa Cristo's Catering & Greek Taverna $ $ $ $ Greek  in  Koreatown ,  Westlake $$$$ 2771 W Pico Blvd 7.8 /10
Part-deli, part-bakery, part-Greek grocer, Papa Cristo’s is, to borrow a very niche industry term, a “triple threat.” And while we can no longer loiter like truant teenagers in their spacious dining hall, even to-go, their fantastic Greek food is still good for almost any occasion, like a quick lunch, celebratory dinner, or for when you glanced at a calendar then accidentally thought “What is time, really?” for, like, way too long. So order some moussaka, “spanakopitza” pizza, and double the amount of saganaki (fried cheese) you think you can eat. Papa Cristo’s Greek Grill is available for takeout and delivery, call (323) 737-2970 or find them on various delivery platforms.
Order delivery   Holly Liss Petit Trois $ $ $ $ French  in  Sherman Oaks $$$$ 13705 Ventura Blvd 7.9 /10
Now that they’ve transitioned into a market for the time being, Petit Trois le Valley has all sorts of well-curated goods for sale, like Comté cheese, Madagascar green peppercorns, and rose-infused vodka. But whenever life seems to be full of constant anguish, there’s no better way to go full Sartre than with their pre-made French foods. From escargot to apple tarts to kits full of ingredients to recreate their legendary Big Mec (one of our favorite burgers in LA), this incredible Sherman Oaks restaurant still has everything you need for an existential spiral - all of which you can now enjoy from your own home. Petit Trois is available for takeout and delivery, preorder through their website.
Pho 87 $ $ $ $ Vietnamese  in  Chinatown $$$$ 1019 N Broadway Not

Kind of like the guardian angel Gabriel, or the voice in your head last night that told you not to buy a $200 milk frother, Pho 87 is in the business of saving souls. Their menu is large, but you almost can’t go wrong with ordering anything from this quiet Chinatown restaurant. It’s all ultra-nourishing, ambrosia-level food, from oxtail pho to the dac biet, a fragrant mix of herbs, meat, and a clear, savory broth. Plus, everything’s under $13. So… maybe you can get that frother after all? Let’s talk about it later. Pho 87 is available for takeout, call (323) 227-0758 to order.
Sapp Coffee Shop Sapp Coffee Shop $ $ $ $ Thai  in  Thai Town $$$$ 5183 Hollywood Blvd 8.6 /10
From breakups to the time we threw away our entire wallet by accident (read: last week), this tremendous Thai Town restaurant has seen us through it all. And while they do serve coffee, as well as a coconut-heavy tom ka kai and some of the best jade noodles in town, whenever we feel overwhelmed by the weight of the world (it’s really heavy), we order Sapp’s boat noodle soup. This deeply complex dish, full of beef filet, tripe, and pork skin, somehow tastes funky, sweet, sour, and cinnamony at the same time, and is exactly what you want to be eating whenever you look at your dying houseplant and think “Same.” Sapp Coffee Shop is available for takeout and delivery, call (323) 665-1035 to order, or find them on various delivery platforms.
 Jakob Layman Sun Nong Dan $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Koreatown $$$$ 3470 W 6th St Ste 7 8.3 /10
Yeah, we’ll say it. It sucks that we can’t dine-in at Sun Nong Dan anymore. Basically half of the experience was sitting down in their tiny dining room and watching, in equal parts fascination and horror, as your bubbling cauldron of galbi jjim got blowtorched to hell by your server. And looking back, maybe that was a metaphor? Maybe we’ve become the delicious combination of short ribs, rice cakes, and veggies that have been blasted into Dante’s Inferno, as a result of 4,000 weeks of isolation. Just something to think about. Anyway, everything from the aforementioned galbi jjim to their oo guh ji galbi tang, or spicy beef and cabbage soup, is available for takeout and delivery. Call (213) 365-0303, or find Sun Nong Dan on most major delivery platforms. Blowtorch not included.
Order delivery   Jakob Layman Sushi Note $ $ $ $ Wine Bar ,  Sushi  in  Sherman Oaks $$$$ 13447 Ventura Blvd 8.8 /10
There are a lot of fantastic sushi spots in LA, but one of the best, and certainly the most unique, is this neighborhood wine bar in Sherman Oaks. Half premium sushi restaurant, half chic bottle shop, there’s no better place in town to crush an $80 omakase set while sipping on chenin blanc or a pinot noir from Burgundy. And while they’re not offering any of their tremendous wines to-go (yet), they just introduced a new takeout menu, which includes hotate scallops from Japan, maguro bluefin tuna, and the Half Note sushi sampler, where for $45, you get eight pieces of nigiri, shisito peppers, and a cut roll. Or, as it’s referred to in “The Biz,” the exact combination of things we need to keep us from doing something drastic, like bleaching all of our hair. Sushi Note is available for takeout, call (818) 802-3443 to order.
 Jakob Layman Teddy's Red Tacos $ $ $ $ Tacos ,  Mexican  in  South Los Angeles $$$$ 731 E Slauson Ave 7.9 /10
If you don’t find yourself transcending this astral plane when handed the deluxe plate from Teddy’s Red Tacos, then damn, maybe life really is meaningless. But that probably won’t happen, because for just $14, this Tijuana-style taco truck (and their brick-and-mortar spot in Venice) will give you a life-affirming assortment of cheese-encrusted molitas, quesadillas, tostadas, pozole, and birria-stuffed tacos, plus, an 8 oz. cup of consome. Their South LA and Echo Park trucks are only available for pick-up, and Teddy’s Red Tacos’ Venice location is available via various delivery platforms.
Jakob Layman The Tam O'Shanter $$$$ 2980 Los Feliz Blvd
Did the people who created The Tam O’Shanter know that we’d one day be facing a global pandemic, economic collapse, and perhaps the fall of modern society? It kind of seems like they did - almost everything on the menu at this otherworldly pub in Atwater feels like it was tailor-made to crush deep, dark feelings of existential despair. Rounds of brie come baked and covered in cranberries, prime rib dinners are served with generous portions of mashed potatoes and Yorkshire pudding, and… they’re now selling creamed corn by the quart?? OK, game over. Like, how can you say that nothing in the world matters when there’s creamed corn by the quart? The Tam O’Shanter is available for takeout and delivery, call (323) 664-0228 or find them on most major delivery platforms.
 Jakob Layman Tokyo Hamburg $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Bar Food  in  Koreatown $$$$ 600 S New Hampshire Ave. 8.0 /10
Less of a restaurant, and more of an all-night party featuring individual stone grills and hamburgers, back when dining rooms were still open, this Ktown spot was one of the most fun places to spend a Tuesday night. And while their takeout situation is definitely not the same as eating there (no stone grills to-go, sadly), you can still bump pop music, chug cans of Sapporo, and eat their DIY smashburgers from the comfort of your own home. Which is probably better than whatever you were going to do, like stare at the ceiling for six hours, or pretend to read The Myth of Sisyphus. (Spoiler alert: the rock wins.) Tokyo Hamburg is available for takeout and delivery, call (213) 263-2668 or (213) 318-5299 or find them on the delivery platforms.
 Order delivery   Jakob Layman Yapa $ $ $ $ Japanese ,  Peruvian  in  Little Tokyo $$$$ 236 S Los Angeles St Ste G 8.0 /10
Much like our sleeping habits and belief in a higher power, Yapa’s menu has changed a lot during quarantine. Gone are the fresh ceviches and acorn breads served with caviar, but in their place is a new, concise selection of Nikkei (Japanese-Peruvian) comfort foods. That means dishes like beef soup made with corn broth and dry-aged beef, as well as pork ribs with Peruvian beans and pickled daikon - a.k.a. meals that pair really well with a meditation on life’s greatest questions, such as “Can happiness exist without suffering?” and “Seriously, where is my wallet?” Yapa is available for takeout and delivery, call (213) 947-3399 or find them on delivery platforms.

22 Places For Delivery When It All Becomes Too Much (1)
Days are turning into weeks.
