Bonus question for the responses- How do you personally define the terms, and do you feel strongly towards describing yourself with one or the other?

The thing about AI art is, it is easier than conventional art, but it's also not. Like any other art form, it has an infinitely high skill ceiling. It is entirely possible to spend just as much time and effort on an AI-created piece as it would take to produce a visually identical conventional one; it just involves a different skill set. However, the skill floor - the minimum amount of skill required to create something a layperson will find visually appealing - is lower.
And I want to make something crystal clear: as much as I bitch about reckless and malicious use of AI art, I do not believe that taking advantage of that lowered skill floor to make something pretty inherently counts as malicious. It's the factor that enables a lot of that malice, but on its own, I wholeheartedly believe that it's not even just neutral, but a good thing - which makes it all the MORE offensive how it's abused by some really loud and obnoxious voices.
Art is possibly the #1 reason I could never be a capitalist - because art is a "phantom need"; while not as urgent of one, it IS a human need as real as food, water, and shelter. It's about communication, expression, being able to look at something and go "oh, I was here", and all kinds of other things that...sound simultaneously as fundamentally necessary as they are, but also kind of pretentious when written out, because they've been devalued for so long in most English-speaking cultures (that good ol' Catholic guilt + Protestant work ethic and frugality gospel). Most people's mental health suffers drastically without it, even if they don't realize they're seeking it out or suffering without it. Art is even good for physical health - patients have better outcomes in hospitals that don't skimp on art and aesthetics. Art therapy is a very real thing that can save or extend lives; in fact Van Gogh's body of work can be seen as the prototype for art therapy - what makes his work so impactful to so many people isn't just the visual itself, but understanding that this brought a person the tiny scraps of joy and relief he needed to stay alive just a little longer. Lack of enrichment shortens people's lifespans. Art is one of the most universally human ways of getting that enrichment.
Something that lowers the skill floor to make nice art, or makes it attainable with a different skill set, makes that accessible to more people. When we step back a moment and theoretically remove it from capitalist bullshit, that is a wholly good thing with zero caveats and if you somehow disagree on any grounds other than "but we can only do that in theory", then, to be brutally honest: I don't trust you.
Unfortunately, yes, we CAN only do that in theory, so yes, that fact...gets abused. We're seeing it. It's not theoretical. Recall that the two reasons I'm here are 1) watching people's objections cross the line from complaining about those abuses to just plain dangerous reactionary neophobic gatekeeping reminiscent of when digital illustration's "danger" to physical art media was a hot-button issue (and look back now - turns out, just like I predicted then, physical media didn't die out; physical and digital painting and illustration can coexist peacefully!), and 2) wanting to do my part to embarrass the people who maliciously use the lowered skill floor to materially harm conventional artists and see that harm as a feature, not a bug, because so many non-artists, especially those with commercial products that need art, see art as a pretentious frivolity that doesn't deserve recognition or payment. (Trust me, I'm well aware, I've been dealing with them since I was 9 or so--)
But what I'm saying is...it's disgusting that those types even have the POWER to potentially be more than an annoyance in the first place, all because art - a "phantom need", one of the earliest things that defines us as humans, something we've used to communicate since before written language, something we handed down from parent to child in the Stone Age, is wrapped up in this exploitative system of people literally living and dying by what a bunch of rich clowns think. There's always going to be a conversation about the value of art as a form of expression attached to an artist, and the value of art as a part of collective culture detached from the artist; the fact that we have to complicate it with the additional aspect of monetary value in a system that declares that if you don't produce enough monetary value you deserve to die - it's bad enough that such a system exists in the first place, and it just gets messier and uglier when you ensnare art in it.
Thing is, it's natural to want recognition for your art - it is, after all, about expression, and a lot of the time that's about seeking connection. It's not natural to be put in a position where you might not be able to feed yourself, let alone your family, if you don't either get that recognition or give up on art completely for some other abusive undervalued job, and it is certainly not natural to be surrounded by people who think this is fair and just and you don't DESERVE to be able to keep yourself alive no matter how hard you work because either you're pretentious and lazy, or you're a sellout, depending on which side of the survivability line you land on.
Making it easier for people to Make Art is not, and will never be bad. Making it profitable for the people who think that art is for either lazy do-nothings or greedy sellouts to take over artists' work, however...to put it in less-than-academic terms...ew.

I infinitely admire artists who look at a character and can just convert them to their own style, or even experiment with their looks while still maintaining the core of the character and have them be recognizable!
Whenever I want to draw a character I always stick close to their original look and trying to change anything always feels like I'm drawing them wrong fkjhgdskfjgh

Morrowind really took a few days to get comfortable with but honestly it’s so fun once you do?? I can see why people enjoy it. It has so much just straight up weirdness and a million factions to join and stuff. You can tell Bethesda or whoever embraced the weird with this game, and then oblivion sorta streamlined it and made it more lord of the rings, then skyrim made it fully unstoppable. Morrowind’s really alien and rough around the edges but once you get used to the mechanics it’s low key so addictive lol
#basically the big one that took getting used to is that you miss when you attack a LOT#if your stamina is low (and it often is because you move at a snail’s pace and have to run) your character is exhausted#and so if they try to cast a spell there’s a decent chance it’ll fail and if you use a weapon there’s a good shot it won’t hit#if the weapon or school of magic is low level it then becomes much harder to hit also#level 30 or so is when it’s pretty consistent and by 50 you pretty much always hit#but level 5? 10? 15? no. you will literally never once hit your target#which is actually kinda neat mechanic wise because it’s the first time in an elder scrolls game where you really do need to use the trainer#like having a trainer level up your skill is a necessity and idk I think that’s so cool#also you can wear rings that are basically free spells to cast that always work#BIGGEST DIFFERENCE BY FAR: it’s from 2002 and quest journals just didn’t exist then#so basically they tried by giving you a journal that updates with a lil bit of info when something important happens but it misses details#so like… everywhere online says you legit need to get an actual physical journal and take notes#not even for basic quest stuff but also you have to buy directions to towns and stuff rather than aimlessly explore#and it’s honestly so weirdly fun to flip back to your actual real life journal and be like ah yes I took good notes I know what to do#or follow the directions you wrote down after someone told you and then end up at the right town#idk it took a minute to get used to but it’s the most weirdly satisfying part of the game to me now lol

Sorry but I'll never stop thinking abt mp100 literally I think every main chara is some flavor of autist/adhd literally all of them
#thats why reigen is so spastic and st#such a strange guy bc hes just has impulse control but also is like has a bunch of hyperfocuses like thats why hes so good at so many#diff skills in diff bursts bc he gets focused on one and puts all his energy into learning it then he moves on the only reason hes still#running spirits and such is literally bc he loves mob otherwise he would be off on some other whimsy#ritsu and mob to me are clearly the siblings w/ adhd/autism but are percieved very differently and have diff levels of coping with it and#what their strenghts are#like i have a similar thing with my own siblings where we r all brain weird but all have different flavors and conflicting traits#then theres teru i think hes autistic and has mapped out a very specific social structure and rule for himself to follow so that he can fit#in and control how hes percieved#but then he still has you know off beat presentation and masking where he is just threatening and casual and wears silly clothes and just#sees that as the peak of fashion god.... hes everything to me#to me teru is the kind of person where he likes everything in its place in many different ways#then you have tome!!!!!! classic with special interests in games and aliens and telepathy and also inattention w adhd#and also tsubomi!!!! i think shes another great example shes very pretty and she knows how to kind of play her role and be polite but shes#very set in her ways and doesnt just do stuff bc its expected of her#and i think thats also why she and mob get along so well :) bc i think she knows he doesnt see her the way a lot of ppl see her and the#same is kind of in reverse where she doesnt see him solely for his powers or for his outward disposition (which is established to be why he#had such a crush on her)#its just about autist to autist communication in my opinion#talking tag

3d art is great and more people should get into it but also its kind of offputting how much it overlaps with... idk, reddit nft crypto techbro sorts.
Heartbreaking how almost every cool person I find turns out eventually to be that sort. Not necessarily 'bad people' or 'doing bad things' but. Those sorts. Bad vibes.

to get some stuff off my mind
#went to the bjj session tonight; was pretty fun in general; i was drilling with a pretty experienced blue belt so i expect her to be way#better than me always so i dont usually get on myself for getting owned by her#i was being hard on myself for a second for repeatedly failing but i told myself; obviously shes dling better; she has literally 4 more#years of experience#and then it was time for open rounds and i got paired with this ~12 year old white belt girl. idk why she was in the adults class but#nonetheless#we are working on back control so i took her back (basically sitting behind them and wrapping your arms and legs around their torso)#and i was thinking about how it literally felt like i was holding a stuffed animal until SHE STARTED FUCKING WINNING ??????#i cannot exaggerate our size difference#she was genuinely tiny AND SHE SAID SHE HAD ONLY BEEN DOING THIS FOR TWO MONTHSSSSSSSS#neither of us won; its easy enough to *defend* myself but to actually advance and get a better position felt genuinely impossible#i also did a round with one of my usual sparring partners after class; i always love rolling with him but it was exhausting because first#of all i was already exhausted second of all the timer after class is six minutes rather than five for some reason.#he is also much better than me so i got stomped#and it was fun anyway but like. man#i dont want to be salty bevause these ppl genuinely have earned their skill level; either by having done it for longer or coming#more frequently#so i dont expect myself to be on the same level with them#it wpuld just be nice if i was on the same level as like. anyone#and i mean i am but it sucks wgen i do pretty well in a round with someone and then i find out its like their first time sparring wver LMAO#and im just thinking. would i enjoy it more if i forced myself to work harder to improve my skill so i could fend for myself; or should i#just like. call it quits lol#because there are some other things i am interested it#*in#i do enjoy it. but being free food has started to wear on me#a big part of me enjoys bjj for kts own sake but an increasingly big part of me is starting to get pissed at myself#on the bright side; the guy i rolled with after class threw me hella hard but i landed good so it didnt hurt a bit 😎#also i did manage to submit that new girl (and my coach but like. hes 60lbs heavier and a brown belt LMAO so he let me win) but its also#that thing where i will do genuinely well and then find out the person is new as fuck#my brain is on fire rn idk
