First off, I LOVE AUs.  Most of the times AUs are because there’s a great idea for a world that the canon character hasn’t been exposed to and fitting them into that world is a huge part of the fun and the draw.  I love reading creative ideas that introduce brand new concepts and mix things up for a character/s.   The sheer level of creativity people bring to that kind of set up constantly knocks me off my feet and gets me hooked, wanting to explore more.  Anyone that’s followed any of my writing long enough knows that I love world building.
But.  But I’m not into AUs for the world building.  I can enjoy the world-building but the reason I’m really there, as a reader, is to see how the character that’s inserted into the world is changed by being a part of that world.  It opens the door to explore so much about a character that canon didn’t, to give the character adventures they never had in canon and to play with the ‘what if’ scenarios that can change, or mirror!, huge chunks of the characters back story.  When done right, it is my mashed potatoes, delicious, filling and comforting all at once.  I will show up over and over again for as many helpings as the author is willing to dish out.

Now don’t get me wrong.  This is a personal response of mine and not a judgement in any way on people that want to write and read otherwise.  That’s cool.  We all look for different things in our stories and for me I am always more wound up in why the person is the way they are over the adventure itself.    For me, a good AU has to find a new balance between Nature vs. Nurture with the characters.

When I was in elementary school, my mother took me to work with her one day and she packed a lunch for me to eat while we were there.  One this occasion, she made me a peanut butter and banana sandwich.  On brown bread.  Mom was very about being healthy but the brown bread was already a matter of contention between us and adding bananas to my peanut butter and- sandwich was where I drew the line.  There was no way I was going to eat that sandwich and my little bull horns came down about it.  Mom, who is NOT bullish like that, had already figured out the best bet was to just leave it alone.  If I didn’t want to eat the sandwich I didn’t have to eat the sandwich.  It’s not as if I was going to starve before dinner.   BUT - she had also packed a package of Pepperidge Farm Gingerbread cookies.  To this day, those have to be an all time favorite of mine and it was the same when I was all of three foot tall.  If I wanted the cookies, I had to eat the sandwich first.  If I didn’t eat the sandwich, no harm, no foul, but I didn’t get the cookies.  It’s got to be one of the oldest parental tricks in the book and I’m sure its not the first, or last, time my mom used it on me.  But for some reason I very distinctly remember this one time.
I remember sitting in the courtyard determined I wasn’t going to eat the sandwich.  I remember really wanting the cookies.  And I distinctly remember debating whether it was more important to stand my ground and not eat the sandwich or if it was more important to get the cookies.  Well, I decided I wanted the cookies and managed to negotiate eating the sandwich but NOT the crust with my mother to secure that outcome.
I’ve carried that forward through my life since then.  I’ll get hit with something, usually without warning because that’s what triggers the ‘horns down’ the fastest, and I immediately decide on a course of action and the bull nature kicks full force.  Until I get the chance to think about it.  Sometimes I stick to the first decision and tough it out.  But sometimes I decide that being stubborn doesn’t get me the goal I really want and I’ll put it aside.  To me this is Nature - I am stubborn instinctively - vs Nurture - being taught to weigh the results of being stubborn to see if its worth it.  I have both.  I am the way I was born.  But I am also the way I was raised.  Its a mix that’s not an even of both and it will change depending on everything from situation to mood but its always a mix.
To me, this is one of the cores of what makes a good AU a good AU.  You have taken a character and you have transplanted them in a different world.  Their Nature is the same but their Nurture (or lack thereof) if VASTLY different.  The AUs that I enjoy are the ones where you can still recognize the character’s Nature but their ‘Nurture’ is different enough that that Nature responds uniquely to that specific world.  The character is recognizable even with a different coat of paint on.   The writer could, technically, go so far as to change the character’s name and I would still recognize who we were talking about because of the Nature of the character.  Obverse, the name could be the same but if I don’t see any recognizable signs of the Nature, the Core Traits, of the character than its not the character to me.  For me at least, you can give me the most interesting alternate world to explore - but if I don’t recognize the character by anything other than name, you’ve lost me.  Whoever they are, they’re not the character I showed up for anymore.  And more, the story has lost a delicious opportunity to explore how a different world shapes the character’s core Nature.  This is because, for me personally, I’m always there for the character Core first, and the story second.  I will absolutely stick around if the character’s exactly the same as they are in canon and just in a new world.  I liked the character as they were already presented to me by canon enough to show up, of course I’m going to stay.  But if you really want to hook me hard and have me eager to dive into each new chapter?  Don’t be afraid to feed me some Nature vs Nurture. 
What makes someone who they are, no matter what they go through in any world or universe?
You want to tackle that question, I’m here will bells on.  Or bull horns.  But either way, I’m bringing my spoon.

Peter fell in love with you the very first time he met you. Tony had introduced him to you, his daughter, when he first joined the Avengers. The moment you walked in the room, his heart filled with warmth. You were the most beautiful girl he had ever seen in his life. But he knew you were out of his league.
Being the daughter of Tony Stark, you had everything you could ever need. You lived in the biggest, most expensive building in all of New York, you went to an extremely prestigious private high school, and you had boatloads of money, among countless other things.
Peter, on the other hand, had none of that. He lived in a small apartment in Queens, and he barely had enough money to pay for lunch every day. Sure, he went to a specialized gifted school, but its not like he had to pay for it. All he had to do was take an entrance exam, which he was perfectly capable of passing.
That’s why he was extremely surprised when you agreed to go on a date with him. He had finally plucked up the courage to ask you out, dressing up in his nicest shirt and buying the most expensive bouquet of flowers he could afford. He fully expected you to say no, given that all of your other boyfriends had been fancy rich guys from your school that bought you pearls on the first date. But you said yes.
Peter wanted to take you to a fancy restaurant and treat you to a five course meal, but he knew he could never afford that. So instead, he bought the two of you sandwiches from Delmar’s and took you up to the roof of his apartment building for a picnic under the stars. With the help of his Aunt May, he had decorated the patio with string lights and laid out a blanket with May’s nice china plates and silverware.
“I know it’s not much, but I hope you like it,” he smiled sheepishly.
You stared in awe at the beautifully lit patio in front of you, “Peter, this is amazing! I love it!”
Peter’s smile widened as you hugged him tightly, relief flowing through him knowing that you were enjoying the date.
After dinner, Peter offered to take you for a swing around the city before you went back home, expecting that you wanted to get back soon.
“Actually, can we just lay here for a little while? I don’t really want to go back home yet,” you asked.
“Of course,” Peter responded, offering you a seat next to him on the blanket.
The two of you laid down, and you cuddled close to him, gazing up at the twinkling stars in the night sky.
You looked up at him lovingly, “Peter, I just wanted to say thank you for this.”
“Oh, uh, you’re welcome Y/N. I was afraid you wouldn’t like it because it wasn’t fancy like all of your other dates and-“
You cut him off with a small peck on the lips, catching Peter completely off guard.
Blushing, you confessed, “Peter, I don’t care how much money you have. Yeah, my other boyfriends had money, but none of them ever did anything as sweet as this. This is the nicest thing anyone has ever done for me, and it beats any meaningless piece of jewelry or fancy meal. I could care less if you’re rich or poor, I’m just happy to be here with you.”
Not knowing what to say, Peter leaned in and kissed you again, smiling against your lips.
The two of you continued to cuddle under the stars for the rest of the night, and you ended up falling asleep in his arms. Peter looked over at you as you slept softly, with nothing but love for you in his mind. You were his uptown girl, and you loved him no matter how much money he had, and that made him truly happy.

@serinemolecule asked me for hot takes on this 2006 article on Argentinian food, which I am now reorganising into a proper post for y'all's consumption. you're welcome.
First of all: the titular thesis that you should eat two steaks a day. I am forced to clarify that as 'should's go you should eat zero steaks a day, but this is ethical rather dietary advice and I don't follow it as well as I should, so, y'know. I would engage with this on the level it was stated, but I actually have no opinion on it. Moving on...
Argentine beef really is extraordinary. Almost all of this has to do with how the cows are raised. There are no factory feedlots in Argentina; the animals still eat pampas grass their whole lives, in open pasture, and not the chicken droppings and feathers mixed with corn that pass for animal feed in the United States.
This is, as it happens, completely false. There absolutely is plenty of feedlot beef being eaten in Argentina, and this was also the case back when this article was written. There's grass-fed beef too, and maybe the writer structured their life around only eating those, but the claim that there are no feedlots is just not true.

I have no idea what their obsession with steak thickness is; meat exists at various levels of thick and thin to suit various tastes. If you like yours thick that's fine but quit the projecting, y'know.
As you might expect, vegetarians will have a somewhat rough time here. For most people in Argentina, a vegetarian is something you eat. One's diet will accordingly lean heavily on pastas, gnocchi, salads, and (for the less squeamish ) fish. Vegans will not survive in Argentina.
This is, unfortunately, true (well, hyperbole, but). Rinna had a rather bad time trying to find vegan food when fae came over for visits. The situation is improving slowly, at least.

It should be no surprise that the land of beef also has excellent milk and butter. The milk comes in plastic bags that would give any American marketing department a heart attack. They proudly advertise "GUARANTEED 100% BRUCELLOSIS AND HOOF-AND-MOUTH FREE". One brand even brags that its bacteria count never exceeds 100,000 per mL, and prints daily statistics to prove it (only 82,000 bacteria/mL on Monday! mmm!).
Are you under the impression American milk doesn't contain bacteria and that when it spoils it's because of the molecules' sheer willpower? Or do you just object to the reminder that they exist?
This menu is delicious, but with rare exceptions it is all you are going to get. People coming for more than a few weeks are advised to bring a discreet bottle of Tabasco sauce.
Eat at better restaurants.
With any order from the master menu comes the Bread Basket, which should be treated as you would treat a basket of wax fruit, that is, as a purely decorative ornament. It is considered bad form to actually eat anything from Bread Basket
What are you talking about. Do all your dining companions just suck, eat some bread.
Dulce de leche is a culinary cry for help. It says "save us, we are baffled and alone in the kitchen, we don't know what to do for dessert and we're going to boil condensed milk and sugar together until help arrives". This cloying dessert tar is so impossibly sweet that you wish you were ten years old again, just so you could actually enjoy it. It is everywhere. There is a special dulce de leche shelf in the supermarket dairy case, and the containers go up to a liter in size. Even the churros are stuffed with it - the churros, Montresor!
It is rare that I feel insulted for the sake of my country, but this? How dare you.
Yes, of course we fill churros with dulce de leche; the real question is why anyone doesn't, short of dietary restrictions. Finding out that people do otherwise was like learning that in other countries, "sandwich" just means two slices of bread. Live a little. Eat a real godsdamned churro.
I spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out how meals work in Argentina, and they remain a mystery to me. Dinner is clear enough: people tend to go to restaurants beginning at ten o'clock (for those with small children), with the main rush around eleven, and dinner is pretty much over at one or so in the morning. And breakfast - or rather, its absence - follows as a logical consequence of eating a steak the size of a beagle at midnight. But I have yet to figure out whether people eat some kind of meal in the afternoon, and if so, when.
At... noon? Like. We eat lunch. Usually somewhere around 12:00. I am eating lunch right now, and I have done so essentially every day of my life. This is just baffling.
I've come to think the culprit in the missing Argentine lunch scene is yerba mate.

Where the ignorant foreigner may see just another kind of herbal tea (yerba mate is a very unassuming shrub that grows in the northern parts of the country) the Argentine sees a taste treat of unimaginable subtlety, and a tonic for all his problems. The Wikipedia article on proper mate preparation should give you a warning of the level of obsessiveness attainable here (the Urugayans are even worse). To the virgin palate, mate tastes like green tea mixed with grass clippings. The beverage is traditionally drunk out of a little gourd, through a metal straw called a bombilla, with hot (but not boiling!!) water poured into it (without wetting the surface!! clockwise!!) from a thermos.
Yeah, this is accurate. Well, not the clockwise part, never heard anyone complain about that and I can't imagine it mattering.
What distinguishes mate from coffee and tea is the social context - two or more people share a gourd, with a designated pourer in charge of refilling it with hot water after each turn. The ritual is low-fuss but indispensible. You can buy mate gourds and thermoses in any grocery store, and get your thermos filled with hot water at any convenience store or gas station, but you will never see mate served in restaurants or sold in little disposable paper gourds, to go. it's not that people refuse to drink mate alone - anyone working a solitary shift will have a gourd in hand - but that the concept of being served mate by someone who does not share it with you seems impossible.
This is also true. Attempts have been made to sell to-go mate but it's never very popular, the social ritual is important. Also unfortunately a disease vector, I haven't had any mate in a year and a half.
Mate aficionados will tell you that mate contains a special compound, mateine, that serves as a tonic and mild stimulant, promoting alertness without making it hard to sleep, reducing fatigue and appetite, helping the digestion and serving as a mild diuretic. Scientists will tell you that mateine bears a suspicious resemblance to a chemical called caffeine. Mate aficionados will then grow indignant, explaining that mateine is really a stereoisomer (mirror image) of caffeine, with different effects, which will in turn irritate the scientists, who will snap that caffeine doesn't have a chiral center, so it can't have a distinguishable mirror image, and why don't the mate aficionados just put a sock in it.
The first part of this is true; some people definitely think "mateine" is different from caffeine and it absolutely isn't. Never heard the stereoisomer claim before but googling it does confirm some people say so.
still have no idea what any of this has to do with lunch, though. I promise you nobody skips lunch because mate is just too filling.
The wine here is very good (something has to stand up to that steak), but Argentina has no liquor to call its own, relying on whiskies like Old Smuggler and the low-maintenance Don Juan cognac to carry the flag.
There's a fundamental omission from this list and it's called fernet.
Beer is ubiquitous and comes in a bewildering variety of sizes, although there is a skittishness about the full-on liter. Things level off at 970 mL. In my case, it means I end up drinking 1940 mL of beer as a kind of personal protest, and all is well with the world. To make up for the abundance of sizes, beer comes in only one variety, Quilmes, which inevitably comes served with a tripartite platter of snacks - nuts, salty cylinders, and aged potato chips.
I never had trouble buying beer by the litre, but I confess I never tried to do so in 2006 on account of being under 18 at the time.
Anyway, beer comes in a lot more varieties today, thankfully, because Quilmes sucks. I'll never be a beer person, but at least these days there's options I tolerate.

Summary: Amber is earning a masters degree in mythology and folklore; when a handsome stranger sweeps her off her feet, she’s left wondering how, and struggles to keep up with his lifestyle.

Warnings: Alright, we ready to get into the menu of delights we will be reading today? Okay but seriously, if you are triggered by anything on this list, it is your responsibility to not read this work of fiction. A/N: Okay so this story is based off of this thread where @killjoy-assbutt-1112​ gave me a fic title, but I added another twist to it that I’d been brewing for months; I was excited about it but now I’m not. Whatever, I’ll give it to you anyway. Sources for my vampire lore came from here and here. “If you look at the Slavic region, vampire folklore runs rampant. One especially interesting specimen is the Pijavica. The Pijavica (translated “leech”, or “drinker”) was a rare species of vampire— traditionally male, and a powerfully strong, cold-blooded killer. The potential for conception is most commonly believed to be through the incest of the deceased with his mother during his life, though some believe that one can be created through the exceptionally malicious and evil acts of the deceased before his death. 
The birth of a Pijavica is attributed to many different causes, including suffering an “unnatural” or untimely death such as suicide, excommunication, improper burial rituals, or even simple causes such as an animal jumping or bird flying over either the corpse or the empty grave, being conceived on certain days, or being born with a caul, teeth, or tail.” 
I paused my typing, fingers leaving the keyboard in order to brush loose strands of hair from my face. Around me, the baristas of my favorite coffee shop were buzzing like worker bees in an old hive; they were gearing up for the lunch rush, and I realized I’d been here four hours already. 
This place had long been my go-to study zone. It was small; there was just enough hustle and bustle to keep me from descending too deep into the abyss of studying and yet, it had the respect of the patrons that a library does. The owner, Fred, made sure that conversations were kept in hushed tones, courteous to those of us who needed to work in noise instead of quiet. 
“If ya wanna be loud, go sit at a Starbucks!” He’d huff at those who didn’t heed his warning.
My eyes took in the familiar surroundings as I stretched. An oversized wood-burning fireplace filled the wall next to the vintage cash register; it was sandwiched between two built-in bookcases housing stories of all kinds that were meant to be read and enjoyed. The old stone clackling ran all the way up the wall, and a custom mantle made from an old oak tree that had fallen in Fred’s backyard sat delicately above the firebox. Yes, this shop was magical. It held a special place in my heart, and I’d visited so often that old Fred had deemed the table I sat at as “my table”. It was always kept reserved for me. 
I reached for my coffee without looking; my brain needed more caffeine. I’d spent months on this master thesis, and yet for some reason, the notion of vampires was such a struggle. I didn’t understand the fear of those who lived back then. The origins of bloodsuckers were chaotic, the “treatments” laughable and still, people were willing to kill their own offspring over such nonsensical superstitions. Cold drops of stale roast hit my lips in a harsh reminder that I’d finished my previous dose. I sighed heavily and dropped the cup to the wooden surface of my table. Eyes closed, I laced my fingers around my neck and drew my elbows together to stretch my spine. Coffee. I need more coffee.
“Having trouble?”
A man’s baritone, smooth as whiskey interrupted my thoughts. My body jolted at his leisurely tone, and I nearly tumbled off the chair as my eyes snapped open to view the intruder. Sitting across from me was anything but a man; I was in the presence of divine artistry, two breathtaking orbs of gray-washed sky centered below auburn curls that adorned his perfectly symmetrical face. A sharp nose pointed to his strong jaw, while an amused smirk tugged at the corner of lips that I’m certain could send even a nun to her bedroom for self-maintenance. He wore a crisp, pinstripe suit, the buttons of his dress shirt undone sinfully low, revealing a smattering of additional curls. 
My oversized turtleneck sweater and leggings suddenly felt subpar.
“The name’s Walker,” he mused further, gesturing a large hand toward the empty paper tumbler that was now lying on its side. “What were you drinking?”
“I--I um,” I fumbled with my words, embarrassed by my sudden inability to form a proper sentence. “I had a flat white? With two extra shots of espresso.”
The man named Walker had the cup in his hand and was out of his chair before I could blink; he was already ordering another coffee by the time I managed to process his intentions. I watched him hand the barista a bill I couldn’t see, but by the shocked expression on her face at the man’s declination of the change, it must have been a sizable amount. He sat down at the table again and stared at my chest unabashedly, making it clear he wasn’t just looking but imagining as well.
I should have been offended or felt objectified, but instead I felt drawn into his gaze.
“Having trouble?” He asked again, gesturing this time at my laptop.
“How long were you sitting there?” I blurted out, still too flummoxed to answer his question. Walker laughed and I swear, time stood still. Never in my life had I heard something so beautiful.
“Long enough.”
His reply was short and cryptic, a dismissal of my burgeoning curiosity. The barista chose that moment to bring two orders of coffee to the table, offering both of them to Walker by mistake. I took in her awestruck countenance, and there wasn’t a doubt in my mind that if my face matched hers I’d sink to the floor and die of shame. That notion shook me from my stupor and I was finally able to address his question.
“It’s my master thesis,” I explained, taking a sip of the scalding liquid he handed me. “I’m a History major, with an emphasis in mythology and folklore.”
I took another sip and tapped my phone, large numbers greeting me on the screen. Numbers that told me I was extremely late.
“Oh my god I have to go, I’m so sorry!” I apologized, scrambling to pack my things. In my haste I knocked my drink off the table. Resignation sunk in deep, submission to the knowledge of further humiliation at the impending spill. None came however, as Walker caught the drink in his hand before it crashed to the dark tiles.
“Thank you,” I murmured, gawking at him in bewilderment. Who was this man?
“It’s my pleasure,” he said, standing to help me collect the remainder of my books. “I’m interested in your thesis, could we perhaps discuss it over dinner? I don’t want to keep you from your next engagement.”
“I—” I stared at him, his face open and inviting. I’d been asked out before, but never this abruptly, and never by someone who looked and behaved like him. It sounded like an adventure…or a good story to tell on girls’ night at least.
“You know what, sure. Why not?”
I scribbled my number onto a napkin and slid it his way, grabbing the rest of my gear and heading toward the door. As I pushed against the hard metal, Walker’s large fingers caught my wrist, wrapping around it like ivy wraps around a lamppost. They were cool to the touch and yet somehow, my entire body immediately felt heated.
“We forgot first names,” he chuckled, “I’m August.”
I grinned sheepishly, pulling my arm from his surprisingly firm grip. The clank of the metal door handle resonated with the introduction I threw over my shoulder as I left the warmth of the shop and the handsome man behind.
“Amber.”

It took August a full week to call me. I felt like a fool; Did I leave on a poor note? Had I offended him somehow? Did he simply decide to change his fucking mind? I was kicking myself for saying yes; how could I have agreed to go on a date with a complete stranger? Now that I was no longer in his flustering presence, I began to see reason again. I knew nothing more than this man’s name, and the fact that he was more than likely rich. He could be a cold-blooded killer for all I knew, and I had every intention of telling him off.
I was in my apartment when he called. Still stuck on my thesis, I was currently unable to determine how best to explain the theory behind the sexual appeal of vampires. In my frustration, I hung upside down over the side of my bed, reading a book that discussed the many different works of literature revolving around vampirical romanticism and hoping the blood rushing to my brain would help me ascertain how to go about my explanation. The book was written by two authors who essentially argue the whole time, one of them convinced that the human fascination with vampires stems from the cannibalistic nature of bloodsucking or that it alluded to other bodily fluids such as semen, whereas the other stood firm in his belief that it held a much simpler cause; it was nothing more than the presence of oral fixation and sadism that caused the fantasy to plant its seed.
My phone vibrated but I ignored it, too engrossed in my book to be bothered with answering. I was so close… the answer was right there, it just continued to escape me. It wasn’t until my phone vibrated a second time to notify me of a voicemail that I put the pages down and picked up the electronic device.
The moment I heard August excusing his delay in calling to a work emergency, I immediately sat up and hit redial. There was something in his voice that made my heart quicken and my pulse race; it made the hair on my arms stand on end. I regretted sitting up so fast as it rang, the blood surrounding my brain draining quickly into the rest of my body. August answered on the second ring.
“Hi, Amber.”
“I—hi.”
I rolled my eyes then flinched in pain, congratulating myself sarcastically on how pathetic that response sounded with a slap of my palm to my forehead.
“Please, allow me to apologize again for waiting so long to call,” August insisted, seemingly unphased by my lack of vocabulary. “I still intend to take you to dinner, that is if you haven’t written me off completely.”
“No it’s fine, I totally get it,” I assured him. I had completely forgotten my earlier annoyance. He had explained it after all, and it could happen to anyone.
“Perfect. I’ll send a car tonight then, at seven. Wear something revealing please, I wasn’t able to see that pretty little neck of yours last time.”
My insides shook with an unexpected pang of shocked arousal at August’s request. The sexual confidence saturating his tone had me instantly reduced to nothing more than a deep desire for him to drag me to my knees by my hair. Why I wasn’t offended by the dominantly abrupt way this man spoke to me, I’ll never know. I put on the best flirty air I could manage in my stupor.
“I think I can manage that. Might have to charge you though.”
August laughed for the second time since I’d known him and I smiled, proud that I’d caused such a melodious sound to grace this earth.
“I like your spirit; you’re gonna be fun. I’ll see you tonight.”
“I—okay bye,” I managed to say before he hung up. I stared at my phone stupidly, as though I thought he was going to call again. Instead, the large clock face glared up at me like it always does, an ever present reminder that I live on a different plane of time than the rest of the world. I fell back on the bed, thinking about the man named August.
He likes my spirit? I hadn’t really shown him much, I’d been unable to do anything but stammer and trip over my words like a schoolgirl would when confronted by the cutest jock at school. What could he possibly see in me? The woman I truly was, the one I knew was underneath the bumbling idiot finally answered me. You’ve got three hours, Amber. Show him what you’re made of.
Resolve set in, and I bounced off the bed and walked toward my closet. For whatever reason, he’d chosen me, so I was going to let my confidence in that thought override all the self-doubt that was threatening to surface. I pulled my favorite dress from the hanger and set out to work. He wanted revealing? Then revealing is what he’d get, but I was going to do it my way.

The car was punctual, though I was less so. I scrambled to put diamond studs in my ears while being driven to some unknown location, my nerves making my hands shake. Once again, the notion that I could be driving to my death crept up my spine, but I brushed it off. Rich men send cars, it’s what they do. And I am an intelligent woman, I wouldn’t let myself be put in that situation.
Would I?

A few tables and chairs were strategically placed on the floor, hugged by back-to-back rounded booths on either wall. Light ethereal curtains hung on either side of them, offering privacy from the guests who would typically sit in the next box over. August led me to the corner booth nearest the balcony so that we could look upon the stage if we chose.
“Our table, milady,” he joked, leaving a wet kiss on the back of my hand. Though the charade was seemingly in jest, it could not have been farther from it. His piercing eyes never left mine and I gasped at the feel of his brazen tongue on my skin. The suggestion of what he could do with it hung thick in his gaze, lacing the air with the succulent first tendrils of decadent tension. Playing along, I took a sharp breath and curtsied. I stayed low as August stood to show him the appeal of my figure at this angle, tilting just my head to look up at him. He stood there, head held high like a king, and the smile I received at my display was downright sinful.

“They’re beautiful,” I murmured, turning back to look at the delicate glass. August pulled me against his naked chest, nosing my hair and kissing my neck.
“Yes you are,” he whispered, earning an eye roll from me. August chuckled and opened the cabinet.
“Would you like one?”
“Really?”
I looked at him, stunned. He simply nodded his head in the direction of the vials and I examined them, selecting one that had a white pattern on it that looked like lace.
“Mmm, a good choice. Perhaps I can collect tears of ecstasy for you,” August whispered. The thrill of what he was implying awakened my senses, and I let him lead us slowly back toward the bedroom. I felt like teasing him, so I delayed a bit by asking about the art on the wall.
“What are those?” I pointed to the first print, a cross-hatching pattern that looked like it was made of sewing pins.
“Those are tears of grief,” he stated, stopping in front of each as he walked me gradually down the hall.
“A yawn,” he said of the next, a white background with dark, fern-looking splatters. My head swam suddenly, confusion mutilating all thought. I backed away from him.
“Morning what? What are you talking about?”
August took a step toward me, placing a hand on my belly and lacing his fingers in the hair at my nape.
“Women always taste better after they’ve conceived. And I can keep them longer; they make much more blood when they’re host to a fetus.”
I pushed against him, turning away and vainly attempting to process his words. Pregnant? Taste better? Blood? My eyes focused on a card I hadn’t noticed earlier in the shadow box, a single word printed on it.

My heart pounded in my chest, desperate to be free of this sudden nightmare. I slammed into the front door and grabbed the handle, a strangled sob catching in my throat when it wouldn’t open.
I rattled the door knob, panic consuming every fiber of my being. Suddenly, it wasn’t just my life I was fighting for; apparently there was a life inside of me that needed protecting. The child of a Pijavica that was depending on me to escape, so that he could come back and kill his father. I have to get out. I gave up on the door in anger, spinning around and looking for another way.
“Do you know why I chose you?”
I heard August’s voice again, but he was nowhere to be seen. His voice came louder, penetrating my mind. I have to keep moving.
“It was because of your name; they match your eyes.”
I whimpered at his words, sneaking my head around a corner to survey the living space for some form of an exit.
“Amber has a historical application, you see,” he went on, louder. I dashed over the floor, desperate to be gone from him. Door after door remained locked, and my terror grew with each attempt. Every now and then I could hear August, whether it be a rustle of fabric or the knock of his foot on the wooden floor. The scholar in me knew that it was on purpose, that he was luring his prey, giving chase to his food, and yet my rational mind refused to take charge. I was being led by my flight response, and his jarring monologue wasn’t helping.
“Throughout history, whenever a goddess cried it was typically tears of amber, save for the goddess Freya, who cried gold. You met her in the bedroom.”
His laughter echoed through the dark walls of his lair, and chilled me to my core. It was no longer a beautiful sound, but grating and horrible. I was nothing but a petty human to play with, some toy that he could eat when he tired of me. Tears streamed down my cheeks as I came to the last door. Dear God, please let this one open. To my utter relief, the door swung wide and I was met with stairs. Stairs went down, and we were on a cliff. Down was good. Down meant freedom.
I clambered down the steps and flung open the door at the bottom, stumbling into the room and falling to the floor in horror and fear. There in front of me, was nothing but mirrors. A maze of mirrors, each one showing me my trembling features, mocking me, letting me know just how fucked I was. I turned back, intending to go back up the stairs and try another way, but August’s silhouette stood at the top, preventing me from going back into the house. I heard a scream and realized it was my own.
Scrambling off the floor, I took off into the maze, blinded by my tears.
“Each of those girls made it this far you know,” August taunted. I heard the slam of the door and nearly choked as I ran. “You’ll die in this room, just like they did.”
His nonchalance, his continual unconcern about chasing me, his arrogance that he would no doubt catch me made me so angry. I raced from path to path, growing ever more frantic every time I reached a dead end. I didn’t even know if this room had an exit, I just knew I had to keep moving. I tripped over something as I rounded a corner, screaming when I saw what it was.
“I see you found Bridgette,” August chuckled, and I looked up from the skeleton to see his hideous face marred with a sinful sneer. I gasped and took off again, turning this way and that. Hitting another dead end, I doubled back and ran smack into August’s broad torso. He caught me and held me close as I screamed, ripping his shirt from my body. He spun me around, pinning my wrists between my back and his belly, trailing his fingers languidly over my naked frame in an inspection of his handiwork. My jaw was gripped in an iron vice and August forced my gaze to the mirror.
“Do you see what I see?” he mocked. I could only stare in horror, for nothing but my own terrified expression stared back at me.
August had no reflection.
“Out of all the patterns in the world, do you know which tears are my favorite?” August continued to torment. He inhaled my hair deeply, snaking his tongue along the length of my cheek, tasting the stains my tears had left in their wake.
“Fear.”
I heard August growl as I fought against him, his iron grasp caging me against his cool skin, more of the cursed moisture pooling in my eyes. Glassy drops fell, retracing a new path toward my chin but August just kissed them away, shoving me to the floor when my knees buckled of their own accord. He let go of my hands to fidget with his slacks, pulling me back toward him every time I tried to crawl away as a parent would to a petulant child. On the third attempt he snapped my knee, a scream tearing from my throat in my woeful submission to his desire.
Finally free of his clothes, August lifted my hips, lining his rigid cock up against my sweat-soaked folds. He looked up at me with a nasty grin, bloodstained fangs curdling my stomach. I closed my eyes and turned away as he swiped a hand through the mess. One of my favorite places to visit is a small outdoor cafe, very near the coffee shop where I met Amber. Mmmm. Amber. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of that tantalizing woman.
She lasted so much longer than all the others, you know. I’ve never seen such a fear pattern like hers; it is more exquisite than the dawn of a misty spring day in the countryside, more beautiful than a woman at the height of euphoria. And they way they sparkled against her skin, lustrous tracks that wound down her temples and through her hair, glinting in the mirrors with each slow rotation of her inverted body... well, it was as if I was living among the stars. Adding her ashes to my garden was such a shame.
I sat at that little cafe, eyes closed, viewing the world through my enhanced scent. Each drop of bitter coffee, the pollen of a nearby bee, the oil in the bike chains of two clumsy humans as they rolled past; each note and fragrance alerting me to its owner. A familiar scent reached my nose and I turned my head sharply, focusing on it.
Carraway… Saffron.
I smiled softly, opening my eyes to greet the woman that now sat at my table. The honey irises that had intrigued me all those months ago met mine and I chuckled low.

I always love concepts of Eggman obliviously gaining weight but I also love the thought of him doing it knowingly. despite not planning to and being disappointed in himself for passing his set limit again. he tells himself he needs to do something about it and cut out his bad habits leading to it before it gets too out of hand. but he just can't help himself because he's so greedy and loves food so much!
when he wakes up with cravings in the middle of the night and sneaks to the kitchen to help himself to sandwiches and a bunch of snacks, he knows eating all that after dinner wasn't a good idea and he definitely shouldn't make it worse by eating the quart of ice cream that he's eyeing right before he goes back to bed. but he's soon humming in delight as he pushes big spoonfuls of it past his lips and messily eats his way to the bottom of the tub in no time and keeps going even though his belly feels so heavy and full.
when he simply passes by the pantry while fetching a drink and definitely isn't hungry at the time as he only just ate, he knows he shouldn't eat that big chocolate bar that catches his eye but all of a sudden it's gone, he's unwrapping a couple more, and grabbing a big bag of candy. He should only take a handful at the most but he takes the whole bag to his bedroom and tells himself he'll only eat a few. But he'll soon be shamefully surrounded by empty wrappers.
he knows he shouldn't kick back to eat a big pack of donuts and cookies and milk shortly after a pretty filling lunch and dessert. but once he takes the first bite of a delicious donut, something comes over him and he can't stop eating until he's polished off the container, reached the end of the packet of cookies, and gulped the remaining milk. he tells himself he needs to stop with the extra dessert because he always gets carried away like this but he's sure to do it again the next time.
he knows he should cut down on the popcorn and the family-sized bags of chips but he still sits down with them in between meals or in the middle of the night and still manages to eat it all in one sitting, reaching the end of them long before he expected to. and because of that, even though he knew he shouldn't have eaten the first lot it still leaves him debating in his mind whether he should go to get more or whether that's far too greedy- which it is. but sometimes even after being sure to tell himself that, he gets more.
he knows he should try to eat healthier meals but he just keeps asking for his beloved unhealthy fried food like his favorite chicken and fries and only does the opposite of cutting down as he asks for extra helpings of them, sometimes even seconds and thirds because he doesn't feel full enough yet, not until there's a big stack of empty plates and bowls next to his big full gut. he knows he shouldn't eat too much dessert after that but is too eager to shove too much ice cream, chocolate pudding, cake, etc down his throat.
he knows he shouldn't order that large pizza he's been longing for but he just can't get enough of the pleasure of getting the whole thing all to himself, shoving slice after slice into his mouth as he like a fat gluttonous slob, then forcing a few bowlfuls or platefuls of dessert until he's so full he can't sit forward. he has no choice but to lounge around rubbing and massaging his tightly stuffed belly in bed as all the food moves down and heavily digests while he belches and moans but it feels so good to be so full.
he knows he shouldn't keep sneaking out late to order fast food in drive thrus with huge orders of fries, burgers, chicken, wraps, ice cream, muffins, and large cokes and eating and drinking it all in one sitting until he's about to burst and can't move in his Egg Mobile without feeling sick, so he has to sleep in it for the night. it's appalling but so arousing, he loves gorging on greasy and salty food until he's packed full, even though it leaves him groaning in embarrassment as he says he shouldn't have done that.
he knows he should cut down on the sugary soda and beer that leaves his belly even more rounded out and bloated after eating a lot but it doesn't stop him from chugging down cans or tall iced glasses full to wash down his next meal and the big burps it helps bring up are always satisfying to him. all the milk he's been drinking also doesn't help with the weight he's been gaining as he also treats himself to too much whole milk to wash down desserts, and it's also used in his thick creamy milkshakes and hot chocolate.
every time he stuffs himself after saying he shouldn't and he lays back to rub his full tummy better and can hear the noisy gurgles of digestion, he feels a bit guilty for how much of those extra calories are going to turn into more fat and lead to weight gain. his clothes are getting too tight, he's taking up more room, his furniture is struggling beneath his weight and he needs to slow down. but he'll soon be waddling to the pantry to feed his big greedy belly again because he loves it so much even though he knows it's wrong.
it makes him even more disappointed in himself when he finally had that moment of "alright, I really need to do something about this now" when he reflects on how many opportunities he had to stop much sooner when he realized he should have but just couldn't resist! just because he has the knowledge and awareness at times, it still doesn't mean that he can be successful in having restraint and that shows how much of a fat greedy glutton he is 💜💘💗💖

Surprise Hunger
Weekend shifts are brutal. I work full-day on weekends ever since the pandemic started and half our staff pulled a cut-and-run. We've been trying to hire more people for weekends, but they've all been relatively short-lived. Everyone wants weekends off and when they realize that the boss hired them specifically to fill weekends they quit without notice.
Thanks to these stunts, I'm often called in early to cover an extra hour or three when one of these new hires decides to cut and run. Thanks to the pandemic, I have something to blame for my lack of social life so I usually jump on the chance to grab more paid hours.
Sunday, Father's Day, was brutal. I was already doing a full-shift but boss asked me to come in an hour earlier because of someone pulling a disappearing act. One extra hour of pay means two hours of lost sleep for me with how transit works on weekends--especially on an event-day (Father's Day). So I got up and was out the door, snagging some fast-food on my way to work. I decided to splurge and treat myself since it's been a long time since I did so. I went, got a 6 inch sandwich, soup, and cookies and stuff and enjoyed my breakfast before heading into work (saved the cookies for snacks throughout my shift. The sandwich and the soup filled me up and I did not want to start with an achy, stuffed tummy). I had a packed lunch with me and ate that on my break (I generally pack small portions 'cuz I don't want anything I'm carrying to be too heavy and I don't want to get stuffed while I'm working). I went home and family had waited and decided we would be eating pasta for a very late dinner (we're talkin 10PM). Unfortunately, they have no clue how to properly portion pasta and always opt for an over-estimate rather than an under. They're also the type that doesn't understand the concept of putting leftovers in the fridge for later...so...yeah...a lot of excess pasta ended up on my plate. "Meh," I thought. "I'm hungry anyway."
So much regret.
The pasta was served with some heavy curry-cream sauce (using leftover sauce from the fridge) and buried under all the pasta was a cheese smokie...my favorite and something I've been wanting to eat for months...but have been denying myself because I can't justify $10+ on sausages. I had planned on maybe eating a very small portion of the pasta and then savoring the smokie and going to bed sated because it was late and I had more full shifts ahead of me. In the end my plate ended up being about 3 times more pasta than I wanted. I ate it all--including the smokie--because food-waste is bad anted because everyone would get on my case for packing up uneaten portions (also because the curry-cream sauce wouldn’t be good to eat if reheated). The last bite was rough because my stomach felt really tight and stretched.
I fell asleep cradling my stomach. The curry-cream wasn't sitting very well and the sheer glut of food left me with a very achy and firmly packed stomach. I was definitely in the realm of 'stuffed' rather than merely 'full'. I didn't even get a chance to feel any of it digest. I ended up falling asleep after a few moments of pressing down on some of the really sore spots and hearing my tummy grumble as it struggled with the mass of food. Dear gosh my stomach was packed taut and aching.
I woke up still feeling very stuffed and opted to skip breakfast. My original plan had been to wake up, make myself breakfast, and then head out to take transit for another early-start-shift. I piddled away the time I had allotted for breakfast on catching up on social media and stuff. About ten minutes before I'm set to leave, I feel the fullness in my gut vanish in a snap as a ridiculously loud rumble resounds through the kitchen. I was alone but I felt myself go scarlet because I'm sure it was loud enough to wake up my sleeping family members in other parts of the house. The grumble was so loud that if I hadn't felt the hunger pang I would have honestly thought it were some motor-cycle or whatever starting up outside.
Great...10 minutes before I'm supposed to leave the house and my tummy is literally screaming for food. I pack up my stuff and head on out, mentally begging my tummy not to rumble and embarrass me. I rub my stomach while waiting for the bus because the hunger pangs are getting really intense. My stomach is aching for an entirely different extreme in less than twelve hours.
I stop by a fast food place on my way to work and pick up breakfast, mentally begging my tummy not to embarrass me all the while.
Thanks to other hijinks by co-workers, I get off of work in the early afternoon. I'm hungry again. On my way home I could feel my stomach faking me out with soundless hunger pangs. Welp, I've been stressed with a bunch of life events lately, so I'm going to indulge myself in some hunger-kink. Drop something in my inbox if you so please. I'll be entertaining myself with ideas of a fictional partner and what I'd want them to do with my rumbly, achy guts.

Jon wakes up to Martin leaving before dawn.  Walks him to the door, hands him breakfast and a thermos of tea.  Goes back to bed, the sticky exhaustion nipping at his heals, at the back of his skull.  Inserted in the grit in the corner of his eyes.  
He wakes up to an empty bed, Martin’s side of the room looking sad and empty, usual trinkets of their cohabitation lacking.  No prescription on the nightstand, no glasses, no poetry book, no neatly folded outfit set out for the morning, closet looking empty.  
The room is bathed in the grey light of early morning.  Jon goes back to sleep.  
He wakes up properly at nine.  He makes tea, staring at the faded sticky note that Martin had written precisely how both he and Jon respectively take their tea.  Jon remembers by this point.  It’s been years since he Needed to look at the note, but he still looks at it because… well… it’s Martin’s writing.  Instructions written with care and precision, with a little heart and a smily face.  He doesn’t trace the writing, he isn’t that pathetic, and he doesn’t want the paper to disintegrate any faster than it already is… but he wants to.  
Martin will be back in a couple days.  He shouldn’t be this clingy…  But the flat already feels empty and cold.  Jon shivers, holding his tea close to his chest, and resisting the temptation to make a second cup for Martin.  
Jon teaches his classes.  He eats lunch in his office.  A sandwich that tastes like chalk and fills his mouth with cement.  He grades a few papers.  He teaches another class.  He rides the tube home.  He falls asleep on the couch.  He wakes up on the couch.  The flat cold around him, the cushions stiff and frozen against his slight and hurting frame.  Joints stiff against the chill.  
He thinks about making dinner, or even just reheating some leftovers, but he doesn't.  He texts Martin.  'Love you, hope the volunteer training is going well.'
He falls asleep.  Heavy and aching and so tired.  
He wakes up on the cold couch to a buzz from his phone.  'Going well, just finished up for the night.  Love you!'
It's dark now, but not late.  Daylight doesn't last long in the grey of winter in London.  Jon shivers.  He thinks again about dinner, and how Martin would want him to eat, but he just wants a warm shower and to go to bed.  
He considers his cane, but doesn't feel it worth the effort.  It is out of his way, and he would just like to get this over with.  
Jon hates sitting in the shower, but he hates baths more, and his hurting limbs won't keep him up any longer.  
Jon wakes up in a cold sweat.  Salt on his lips, saltwater on his lashes.  The flat is cold.  Cold like his dreams.  Panic on his breath as the Lonely dreams still hold him in their vice.  He wraps his arms around his chest.  He tries to rub his own back despite aching muscles, trying to make his own boney hands sooth him like Martin can.  He shakes and he cries silently.  
He checks his phone, the low brightness still stinging his eyes, and smears the numbers of the time beyond recognition, but he makes out no new messages.  
He pushes himself out of bed on aching legs, and shaking arms, pulling on one of Martin's sweaters and stopping by the loo.  
He makes tea.  And tries to take comfort because it is almost as good as when Martin makes it.  
Jon goes back to bed.  
It's morning and Jon's head hurts.  His head hurts and his arms hurt and his legs hurt and his back hurts.  
He almost pushes himself up to get ready for work, but he remembers it is Saturday.  
Jon rolls over to Martin's side of the bed.  Placing himself in the divot where Martin would be, if he were not out of town.  
Jon texts Martin.  'Morning, have a nice day, love you.'
Jon dozes.  
He should make breakfast.  But he isn't hungry, and he doesn't want to move.  Even if his small frame isn't holding heat, even under the thick covers of their bed.  He wants the weighted blanket.  He wants the heated blanket, but those live in the closet.  Those are for bad nights.  Mostly of the time He and Martin under the thick duvet is enough.  
But it isn't night and it isn't that bad, is it?  And even so, that is more effort that he thinks he can spare.  
He texts Martin.  
He texts Martin.  
He texts Martin.  
He texts Martin.  
Meaningless texts with the mundanities that are beyond him.  Little messages about missing him, about making tea, about reading.  None of them lies, but cutting out the dragging exhaustion that has given way to a dragging fever.  
And Martin texts back.  
Jon bundled in the heated blanket and Martin's jumper on the couch.  Dosing off to the Archers.  He still hates that show, but it's easier to hate something for the content than admitting he feels too shitty to even enjoy the documentaries he has been saving for the weekend.  
He grades some.  Not much.  And he makes tea.  
He thinks again about the leftovers in the refrigerator, but he doesn't have the energy to eat them.  Lacks the appetite.  
Jon falls asleep on the couch.  Tea cooling on the coffee table.  Papers spread around him in uneven heaps.  
Jon texts Martin.  And Martin texts back.  
Only the buzz of the phone keeping him from sinking deeper into misery.    
Jon texts him whenever he is awake to do so, and Martin texts back during his breaks.  
Jon's head hurts.  He is shivering despite the heated blanket that is tight around him.  Woken from another nightmare by his own gasping breath.  The Stranger this time.  
He calls Tim.  
"Jon?  Everything okay?"
Still gasping from the phantom hands rubbing him down, fighting the nausea that comes with that particular brand of terror, of that trauma of his invaded personal space.  And the desperation that someone come and save him from his cold and empty flat and end this lonely weekend.  
"Jon, are you alright?  Where are you, do you need your inhaler?"  
Jon probably does, but he fights for breath for a minute and he's more or less okay.  
"I'm home.  It's fine, sorry for calling."  He feels foolish for being needy, and more foolish still because he's fighting back tears now.  Tears over nothing at all.  Just the fever.  Just the dreams.  Martin will be home tomorrow, and Jon will probably be feeling better by then, and if not, it's probably mostly exhaustion anyways.  He's been having a hard time getting restful sleep.  
"Hey, hey, hey Jon.  It's okay to call.  Are you alright?  Do you need someone to come over?"  Tim isn't angry.  It still surprises Jon that there is no bite to his voice.  No snipping, not sarcasm, not annoyance.  Just... warmth, caring.  
"Just a little under the weather.  I'm okay.  Sorry for bothering you... Had a dream... and just... Sorry it's foolish.  I'm alright."  Jon shivers, and hoping he doesn't sound too soggy over the phone.  He aches.  Stupid joints.  Stupid immune system.  Gives out the minute Martin leaves.  Which... good.  He guesses… at least Martin isn't losing sleep over him this time.  He hates that Martin doesn't sleep when caring for Jon.  He Hates it.  He hates stealing sleep for him, even if this is the mundane way of doing it, he still has cost Martin too much over the years.  
"I'm gonna come over, okay?  It's not a bother, it's not an inconvenience, I had been planning to give you a visit anyhow, I've been too busy to drop by in a while and I want to see you because you are my friend, and if I make you soup as well, hey we both get dinner out of it.  I promise I Want to.  Sasha still has work, so I don't have any company tonight anyhow.  No plans.  Nothing."
"Not been hungry."  That's all Jon has the energy to argue.  
"Feeling queasy, or just the usual fever nonsense?"  Tim asks.  He sounds too cheerful for this.  
"Nightmare queasy now, but mostly just... fever probably."
"Oof.  One of those nightmares?  Yikes.  Well, that kind usually passes in a bit, then we can make you some Spicy Stoker Sick-day Soup.  This Is to my benefit.  Sasha isn't a big fan, and Martin isn't either.  It's a good excuse to make some good comfort food."
Jon almost smiles.  "'kay."  
Tim must guess he's falling asleep again.  "Get some rest.  I'll be there soon with some soup stuff and meds.  Don't worry about letting me in, I have a key, remember?"
Jon falls asleep on the couch.  
He wakes up to tea being set in front of him.  
Jon groans and rubs at his eyes.  
"I know I've said it before, but that note in the kitchen is fucking adorable!  I mean... a little sad that it took you that long to learn how to make yourself tea, but still fucking precious that the note still has a place of honor.  Not to mention, it's good reference for when I want to make you the perfect comfort cup of tea!"  Tim smiles at him.  
And it isn't the same as with Martin, but it still warms him up.  At least a little.  
"Hey bud, how are you feeling?"
Jon tiredly rock his hand in a so-so motion.  
"Mind if I take your temperature before you drink that tea?"
Jon turns his attention inward to see if what remains of the Eye wants to be helpful today.  "38.6."
"That... I can't tell if that is handy or inconvenient.  In any case, not bad but not great.  You okay if I start the soup?  You can either get some more rest of join me in the kitchen and we can watch some Buzzfeed on my laptop?"
Jon nods.  He gathers his blanket and his tea, and limps to the kitchen.  
Tim sucks in his breath at Jon's clearly stiff movements, and rushes to plug the blanket back in before Jon can move to do so.  
"You.  Are not gonna help, okay?  You can help by drinking your tea, and some water and then getting back to the couch and using me as a pillow and eating a little something."
Jon opens his mouth to argue, but sees the steel in Tim's glare.  Nothing unkind, but still solid resistance.  He nods.  
Jon falls asleep on Tim.  On the couch.  Empty bowls stacked next to Tim's laptop, cord plugged in next to Jon's blanket.  
Tim stays the next afternoon until Martin gets home.  Marin scolding Jon for not telling him he was ill.  Martin thanking Tim for coming.  Martin wrinkling his nose at the soup.  
Martin's prescription and glasses, and clothes and book back in their proper places.  Martin in Martin's divot in the mattress, Jon smooshed against Martin, still a shade too warm, but much better than earlier.  
Jon falls asleep in Martin's arms.
