sometimes it's the technicalities that blow my mind. this is…… unmodified X68000 music????

Yeah listening to this has expanded my mind on what's possible with old FM chips. None of this sounds like the artist found any restriction with any aspect of the system.

"Rivulet" blows my mind every time. It's just an ilkae song. Like cmon.

SDEM - ZNS (2020)

After AE_LIVE 2022, I went on a little bender, looking for anything else ae-esque.

I pretty much immediately struck gold. I had been digging through SDEM stuff anyway but man this is another level.

"dysp 0m" in particular is one of the tracks of all time. I keep coming back to it. it's HEAVY on headphones.

Ssaladd - Ssaladd (2020)

This is a funny selection to land on a TOP8 because it's so understated. It even kinda feels distant.

But damnit that's why it stuck with me.

The use of wow and flutter is crazy good here!

It feels like carefully applied vibrato, an application of the expression MIDI CC. But completely unlike any other vibrato I've heard.

It feels like a pioneering mix of techniques. And I can't stop thinking about it.

No, not Black MIDI. Something prog.

I keep coming back to "Board Room" in particular because it's so... weird? Slightly beyond just SC, but not by much. Heavyweight album.

Kid606 - GQ on the EQ++ (2000)

The textures on this absolutely blew me away.

"My Kitten Went To London" sounds insanely fresh. I can't believe it's pushing 23 years old!

That and "Dandy" really stuck wth me. The latter sounds a bit more era-appropriate somehow (maybe because of oval?), but still vibes really good.

This was actually me revisiting the album. I initially listened to it about a decade ago and didn't like it. Crazy to think I turned away from such gold back then.

nagz - Good (2020)

nagz has been a longtime favorite and inspiration of mine. He's been making music from the future for years and years. Blowing my mind since 2006 or so.

One of his earlier releases, hringur, stuck with me for years. It had an atmosphere that I had never heard before or since.

…until now.

It's not actually a sequel, but it's got a flavor that I just. Don't know where else you can find.

If I were to highlight a single track: "I Like You But Not Too Much" hits astoundingly hard. It's what I imagine Earthbound music might be like if it were made today.

DJ Technorch & 九十九音夢 – Strong Anthropic Principle (2016)

An absolutely mind melting early (found in January) favorite. Hard, hardcore, and psychedelic. And a bit silly.

"猫の気持ち〜Cat's Mind〜 (Masayoshi Iimori Remix)" and "解熱鎮痛一撃必殺〜Critical Arts〜" in particular stuck with me as great experiences.

I really really like the preview video, too. (nsfw warning?) (flashing lights warning?). It truly captures the vibe.

I had already listened to some of these, but around march, I found fanmade CUE sheets, and that brought a whole new level of love for this release.

And then I found fan edits with another set of fan titles. Two names for all of my favorite bits? Sure!

"ceramic / clipcon" i love that percussion! the ringmod in "(drunk) / probat emp2" is some of my fav ae work ever. having splits made me fall in love with the density of "sentinel / sinistrail casual"

and then I discovered the onesix sets and fan-cuts, giving a more ambient dive which I'll only mention briefly here. But man, "reflected / seven of twelve" is one I revisit OFTEN.

Deck.dump week 07

Phyrexia all will be one is out and there are some big changes to all the formats. Mercurial Spelldancer looks like an auto include in delver strategies and allows to take back the innitiative. I will not be surprised if this card also finds a place in modern. Casting expressive iteration (or any cantrip really) seems gravy. Atraxa is making a lot of buzz and cheating her into play is bonkers! I have already a few builds for my playset 😊 Finally, mycosynth gardens alows for all kinds of artifact copying shennanigans and you should really see some changes in Titan decks in modern or people trying to copy LED in legacy.

As said above, mycosynth gardens is a real game changer for Titan and apparently you now play Asuza agin as @EdgarMTG points out!

Atraxa pitches to solitude and grief so why not put her in a goryo's vengeance deck! Thanks @bobinchese for this.

Joris Koek took his blue delver list to a 5-0 finish, a top8 in bazaar of boxes and said there is a place for spelldancer when the card would be available. I love some whale action and this is really sweet!

Aluren is always a deck I keep an eye one. Aluren is one of the only cards I still own from when I was a kid and I always wanted to play the deck. I miss 2 copies for now but this might change in the nearby future! Meanwhile here is a list from Yamada Taichiro who went 4th place in Osaka. I see pernicious deed, I click like!

Playing cEDH in legacy is a thing you can do with tainted pact. I was looking form some lists and here is a sweet tainted oracle list from Nico Chan

Arclight phoenix was my first legacy deck and the deck I wanted to play in modern before faithless looting was banned. Apparently you can still put up results with the list and it's really not that expensive: mono red arclight phoenix prowess deck

I don't own SFM and I'm always looking for some alternatives in my cephalid breakfast decks. @GrapeshotNH found a nice alternative by adding baleful strixes and just roll with it. I tried the list and failed miserably. I think I still want to play Aether vial in my breakfast decks but definitely kudos for the results!

Pauper

I wanted to point out some spice with a poison deck that @jakeAls posted and only casts spells and no creatures, that pretty spicy! I'm not sure what the weather the storm interaction was but I love it!

From Jund Phoenix to Cephalid Breakfast: My 2022 MTG Deck Adventures

Well, it's been quite a Magic year for me. I've dabbled in Legacy, Modern, Pioneer and even a bit of Pauper. I've played with my trusty Phoenixes of course but also Twiddle Storm, Jeskai Ascendany and Turbo Fog. What a year!

My biggest highlight was playing Vintage with Oath of Druid. I don't own Power but the deck has legs! It was a blast to play and it was fun to bring back Emrakul against my opponents on any board state.

Pioneer was fun but I'll put it aside for now.

Looking back at the results I recorded, it's not very consistent. When I play combo like Cephalid or Omnitell, wins are free. On the other hand I bring some janks and builds I do not know well. This has two downsides: you die to your deck but also to your mistakes! In general my records in Modern were really poor and I didn't have that many chances to play the format.

I also play a lot of formats. I like them all but it's difficult to master them. I managed to make top 8 at FNM seasonal for Legacy and Pioneer. The Pioneer top 8 still needs to be played but in Legacy I didn't quite come out victorious.

My best performance of the year was 10th place at Magicmastersmol with Cephalid Breakfast. This deck was my go-to deck for most of the second part of the year. I'm glad I decided to acquire it with all the buzz it's getting lately. Right now it's well positioned in the format.

Overall, I've had a pretty even win-loss record, but the important thing is I've kept on playing and experimenting with different decks. I participated in many tournaments and learned a lot from it.

One of my goals for last year was to keep a record sheet, but I didn't keep up with that. It's not too late, and I will make sure to keep up with it this year. I would also like to be a little be more consistent on FNM but my 2 first deckchoices are already in the bad direction so I'll have to work on that! Finally I want to produce art again. It's time to make those custom tokens that are in all my sketchbooks.

In all honesty, I haven’t been able to paint much studio work this year… I mostly passed it in Denver where I had no studio space and now that I am in Florida, I am still working at creating that space. I honestly haven’t watched the movies a ton (I know, I know) and a lot of them I’ve only seen once (the last movie especially my friend had to force me to watch and I cried so hard that I was like NEVER AGAIN). I tend to more just watch gifs and videos of Snape scenes and then I have no clue which movie they’re from XD

Tho his intro speech about bottling fame and brewing glory is def at the top of the list, along with “turn to page 394″. And “ob-vi-ous-ly”. Omg, now I’m sweating.

I honestly wouldn’t mind Stoneforge Mystic getting unbanned in modern if it meant Ancient Stirrings took its place on the ban list. While I personally don’t like Mystic and I feel like it would warp how most white decks function, I feel like over time it would settle into a proper niche. This tends to happen a lot with powerful freshly unbanned cards, people try to jam them in everything (see last unban of bbe and jtms) but eventually players find that they only really work where they work best. So now Jace is only in the slowest of control decks, meanwhile bbe only settled into Jund and Ponza.

I bring up Stoneforge for a few reasons. People keep tossing around the rumor that it could be unbanned, and while I’m still wary of it (mostly bias because I dislike equipment toolboxes like swords and whatnot) I feel like the format is fast enough that Stoneforge is fine, and often times will die before it can crank out the gun you tutored. But along with this, is my constant cry for Ancient Stirrings to go away. The problem with this card is that while yes it technically is a niche card, manages to find it’s way into a lot of decks that become annoyingly consistent. KCI, Lantern Control, and Tron being the big three, and while not all these decks are individually a problem as far as clogging up top8′s, but KCI and Tron in particular do push a lot of other decks down. Along with this is that a format including Stoneforge along with Stirrings seems like a bad time. A Bant StoneBlade deck sounds like a nightmare for the format if it can keep pace, and considering things like Noble Hierarch, I imagine Bant has a good chance of pulling together an extremely powerful package. Or maybe Stirrings doesn’t even matter and I’m just willing to throw everything under the bus to get it banned because I don’t like Tron.

Casually out here continuing to make history!! I could not be prouder to announce that ur girl not only made top 8 in the very first #MsGreatBritain as part of the 75th anniversary of @missgb_official but she also placed 2nd Runner Up. To have been selected out of the multitude of applications to even take part in such a prestigious event was such an honour. Being announced as the very first confirmed #MsGreatBritainFinalist2020 made history in itself. Seeing my fellow "Ms" contestants announced was nerve wracking, many of these women were people who I had looked up to for the whole of my pageant career, women who inspired me to compete or made me feel represented in various different ways. I instantly felt inferior, unworthy and incapable of being part of something so big. I understand now that these thoughts were irrational fears borne out of years of being doubted and judged. I honestly believe that EVERY SINGLE ONE of my fellow contestants deserved to have won the crown. No single one of us deserved it more or less we were all very equal for varying reasons and at that point I instantly felt a pang of relief that I wasn't responsible for judging such a difficult contest (hats off to each of you judges) Hearing my name called for #Top8 was unreal, I was made up. I was pleased that all my hard work had been recognised and appreciated. That was enough. Then...they called my name as the last person to make it into the top 3! I looked over at Kate and mouthed "Are you sure?!" I was absolutely flabbergasted! I took my place amongst two women who inspire me immensely not really sure if this was really happening. But it did! Little old me - the one who people doubted - the plus size woman of colour who was told she wouldn't ever win something like Ms GB because they haven't crowned a plus size woman let alone a woman of colour (I mean it's not entirely true but people don't research their facts enough!) - the one who doubted her own self worth even though deep down she knows she is every single bit worthy of such an accolade. I had known about my own #walnutallergy but that one is relatively easy to avoid due to tree nut labeling. My first baby gal was born with 7 major food allergies. Some were #top8 others were not. While all food allergies are challenging, we were blessed with a #cornallergy. 12/15 PPTQ

On Saturday I decided to go to a PPTQ. Leading up to the event I was debating what to run between Golgari or Izzet. I decided to run Izzet due to more familiarity with it. My plan for the event was to slow down my pace of play. One of The Practicing Minds lessons is to do things one at a time. Don't shortcut and bunch things together, instead you should deliberately do things one by one.

Round 1: I was against a guy I had played in a different event. I knew he was on boros aggro and kept a hand that could punish it. I was able to slowly think of my plays. At one point, my opponent tapped out to play Heroic Reinforcements. I looked at my hand of shock, spell Pierce, and a couple other cards. My first and quick inclination was to just shock one of the tokens. However, I paused and realized I could just spell Pierce it. I was proud of this as I feel in past events I may have just quickly let him finish casting. I won the match 2-0 and was happy. My opponent complained about Mana issues. I never know how to feel here. I felt sad for him and felt a bit like my victory was downplayed.

Round 2: I played against Izzet phoenix this round. After keeping a 1 lander and not finding a third source, even though I had 2 opts and 2 Discovery, I felt dejected. However I was able to win my next two games and won the match 2-1. This made me feel great. However, this opponent also complained about Mana issues. I knew he had Mana issues in the 3rd game, and even exploited this fact but countering an opt that he was using to look for lands. I felt super happy with this play as it allowed me to run away with the game. These comments from my opponents made me feel like my play wasn't as good as it seemed.

Round 3: I played against Golgari this round at the top tables. During the first game my opponent realized he left a sb card in and called the judge on himself. I was happy to see an honest player do this. He was given a game loss. I felt kinda lucky as I think I was gonna lose the game. I also realized I needed to slow down. I had missed a few triggers during the game and those may have helped me if the match went on. I definitely didn't want to win the match because of this though. Unfortunately I could not rally and win another game. I lost the match 1-2. I felt a bit down and started to get the feeling of failure. I just told myself that it's a rough match up and I can still rally.

Round 4: This round I played against boros aggro again. This match didn't particularly feel close. He just kind of ran me over. I'm not sure what I could have done. Maybe better Mulligan decisions. I lost the round 0-2. Once again, I started to get down on myself. It's a position in a tournament I had been in before and didn't wanna fail again. I just told myself I could potentially top 8 if I just won my next two rounds.

Round 5:. I was up against Golgari again this round. The first game I felt I had a great start, but my opponent landed a Carnage tyrant and I just couldn't answer it. I really felt dejected now. Being in such a good position, only to fail due to not being able to answer something. Game 2 is when I realized my opponent was a bit newer to the game than I. I started to feel entitled to my victory. I have a problem with thinking that just cause I'm more experienced or did more preparing than someone, that I deserve to win over them. This thinking is something I need to rid myself of. I should be happy for anyone that wins. I was able to win the next 2 games this round and was happy that I would at least end the day 50/50 on record. After looking at standings, I knew it would be very improbable that I would top8. However, I wanted to know if I could go 4-2 in a tournament, so I decided to play it out.

Round 6: When I sat down, my opponent instantly told me he was giving me the win. This mad me sad. I didn't want to win this way. I wanted to earn my win. I asked my opponent if he would still play a friendly game with me. He initially declined but he decided he had nothing better to do anyway. My opponent was on dimir surveil. The fact that the match wasn't for anything made it super fun. We both kept helping each other with triggers and just joking around. One of the games ended when my opponent used a Nemonic Betrayal to take every win condition out of my deck. I was able to win against him 2-1. I felt good that I was able to go 4-2 and ended the tournament in 11th place.

Another narrative through this day was me and my second round opponent kept checking in on each other to see if the other won. At the end of round 5, my opponent was only 1 ranking higher than me. He ended up getting into top 8 at 8th place. I'd like to think that my wins helped someone achieve their goal.
