Love for Love's Sake | Things You Didn't Notice #3 | Learning Korean with the boys
I have (barely) emotionally recovered after the ending of this series, and so I'm back with my usual translation notices and cultural specialties posts ^^ Long post ahead!
// Read previous posts with translations & comments I pointed out //
This time I'll look at the Episode 3 [Yeowoon's Affection level from 0 to -99]. Disclaimer: I'm not fluent in Korean but I've been learning it for years and I've lived and studied in Korea for a while. However, in particular Sangwon and Sia annoyed me so much this episode because their banter is so funny but I cannot decipher their wordplay 100% by ear without KR subs so I have to skip over their dialogues %)
Anyway, there's still some fun language stuff to point out!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
- "You're late, Senior (hyung)" - "Senior? (Sunbae?)"
Fun fact: Sangwon, who's the same year as Yeowoon, addresses Myungha as "hyung". Meanwhile Yeowoon addresses Myungha only as "sunbae". Hyung is a term guys call their older male friends (if you're familiar with Thai BLs as well, it's same as "Pi"), meanwhile gender-neutral sunbae means senior, someone who's been longer than you in the industry or some institution (like school).
If I remember correctly, Yeowoon keeps calling Myungha 'sunbae/senior' until the very end of the show. Even when they are sleeping over in the same house after school hours, Yeowoon doesn't call Myungha hyung but sunbae only. In Korea, you use titles or formal full names to people older than you or acquaintances, and you usually use names with the people younger than you. That's why, if you think about it, there wasn't a moment in show when Yeowoon says Myungha's name :D Only sunbae. And that's normal. (this is also why Myungha never mentions Writer sunbae's name at all)
Also, we'll return to Myungha's usage of Yeowoon's name a bit later.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Keep doing it if you want to die young, Sangwon-ah." "*gasp* You call me by my name when you're mad?"
But Sangwon is talking to Myungha in a very familiar way, using 'hyung' instead of 'senior' every time, making it feel like they are friends (and most of their interaction this episode revolves around Sangwon trying to make Myungha talk to him like a close friend as well xD).
Why is Sangwon so thrilled every time Myungha calls him by his name? Because there are many other Korean words you can use for people, especially if you're angry with them (ranging from the impolite 'this guy' to swearwords). But every time Myungha gives a casual warning to Sangwon who's annoying him, he still says "Sangwon-ah", which is how you'd call your younger friend who's just being a brat. No wonder Sangwon keeps pushing Myungha to get his attention and affection^^
Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the topic of names and intonation: I noticed Myungha uses aegyo (acting cute) often when he talks to his grandma. However, with other school students, like I mentioned in my previous language posts, most of the time his speech feels like a patronizing talk of a 29-y.o. adult.
But! I found that one scene when Myungha is deliberately using aegyo with Yeowoon! The reason for it is that Yeowoon finally responded and wanted to meet up after avoiding him for so long, and Myungha is extremely excited.
"Yeowoon-ie, you're waiting for hyung?~" "Don't use that voice".
Two things: Myungha calls himself Yeowoon's "hyung" which feels closer than "sunbae", he wanted to take the next step and make their communication less formal. And instead of saying friendly "Yeowoon-ah" like he always does, he changed the pronunciation of his name to "Yeowoon-ie" — which is, together with the playful intonation in his voice, is so. fucking. cute. However, Yeowoon instantly rejected his aegyo and Myungha returned to the way he always spoke x) RIP.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I already pointed it out briefly in another post but – Myungha cooked a curry rice for dinner with Yeowoon. It might not seem like anything, but I thought it was an amazing detail to show later in the series that even when Yeowoon almost forgotten about Myungha who disappeared, he kept bulk buying rice with curry (yellow packages) for his dinner.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"You act like you're my parent (guardian)." "Well, you're not wrong."
I thought that Myungha telling Yeowoon he's not wrong about him being his "parent" was a bit weird, and indeed, the word they are using here is 보호자 (bohoja), which is "guardian". It can be said about parents but also about anyone who's protecting something or someone as well. Which is exactly what Myungha is striving to do in this world and in this game. To protect and take care of Yeowoon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"My mom split (ran away) but my dad said she died." "I wish I could split (run away)... I kept running around the field because I felt frustrated. But how could I run away?"
Here I'll need some help from native English speakers, which I'm not, can 'split' be used in this dialogue with the same connotation? Because in Korean, Myungha clearly says "My mom ran away", to which Yeowoon responds "I wish I could run away" and immediately remembering about the reason why he became a runner. And I just loved the accent the show made on this word, which got lost in Gaga subs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Don't slack off because you think no one sees." "Maintain your image (Do some mental training)"
This one is surely a mistranslation. The coach says "Do Image Training", in Korea and in some other Asian countries, as far as I encountered this term, this basically means "mental training", or "meditation" and has nothing to do with maintaining one's reputation.
Think "breathe in, breathe out and think how well you'll do and imagine yourself running that race before it starts".
Tumblr media
Yeah, probably no one cared about that dialogue or scene anyway, but I hope you're still enjoying my hyperfixation on this show xD Anyway, it's been a long post and I'm done for Episode 3 — but as a bonus, let me share bonus with one of the Sangwoon x Sia scenes.
+
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I tried hard to figure out the word that Sia uses when Myungha pleads her to get rid of Sangwoon, and the closest I could get was 분력 (the power of Buddha), but one thing for sure — following Myungha's begging, Sia cross-sprayed Sangwoon with perfume like holy water and ordered him like "Begone, demon!". Lmao :D

The Killing Vote: more on Joohyun, Kwon Seokju & Kim Muchan
The Killing Vote (ep. 1-5 notes) The Killing Vote (ep. 6 & overall notes)
It was supposed to be an edit to the previous post, but it would make it even longer than it already is, so I decided to make a separate post! (and I believe it would also exceed the screenshot limit by reeeeeeally far haha)
Have a nice week!!!!
(SPOILERS UP TO EPISODE 6!!!!)
I saw someone notice on the kr twitter that Joohyun smiled as she made KMC hear KSJ say he felt deeply for her. You can also say Joohyun looked happy from hearing these words again.
Tumblr media
They said you could see KMC’s reaction afterwards as jealousy in addition to projecting his past on her and warning her (because he too was under KSJ’s influence and he probably sees his past self in her ; the user mentioned his sentence 'I told you not to get too close to him. He completely fooled you' as something he could say out of these conflicting emotions).
Now that made me think about the 당신 KSJ used to address Joohyun in the moment recorded (‘I feel deeply for you’):
The formal 2nd-person pronoun 당신, but its uses are specific and rare. Most of the time in kr the subject is implied, and you would rather address someone by their title or name (with an honorific if need be) depending on your relationship.
Eg. Joohyun calls KMC 팀장님/team leader and KSJ 교수님/professor, Joomin calls her sister 언니/big sister.
Note: 언니 can also be used by a female speaker for an older woman she’s close to eg. a friend, a girlfriend (like 형 = younger man -> older man ; 오빠 = younger woman -> older man or 누나 = younger man -> older woman).
You can also use the informal pronoun 너 when addressing people the same age or younger than you that you’re close to (and not older, unless your interlocutor asked you to/gave their ok and even still, saying it in public could be a problem/awkward), or to a kid (even though a polite speech would be preferred) or an animal. It would sound rude otherwise. It could also be between people dating/very close regardless of their age.
Eg.: — KSJ addresses KMC with 너 sometimes in particular moments like ‘You wanted to kill him too.’ or ‘I wished you were Gaetal/Is it really not you?/I will never forgive you.’ ; — KMC & Choi Jinsu with Joohyun & Jodan respectively sometimes ; — Jodan & Joohyun ; — Joohyun with her sister ; KMC with Jihoon & Joomin ; Jihoon & Joomin …
And even though 당신 is part of the formal and polite speech, it’s often used in arguments. I’ll quote this page which explains its different uses really clearly:
-> between married couples (it’s not a pronoun younger couples use typically, some middle-aged couples use it)
-> in a confrontational/demeaning tone, when you intend to be rude to the other person (that’s what you would often hear in kdramas haha)
-> as a reflexive pronoun
-> when the listener/audience is non specific in writing (eg. books, ads, language textbooks, …) & in poetic/romantic context (eg. songs, poems, …):
« (…) 당신 is okay to use if there’s no actual person physically present in front of you receiving the communication, [which] means that either THEY are not there or YOU are not there. Examples: — Songs. You hear 당신 a lot in songs because a song is not one person talking to another person. It’s a broadcast. The listener is non-specific. Even if the song is about someone in particular, is called “Hee Jin” or its lyrics are “This song is for Hee Jin Lee, who lives at 302-12 Royal County, Apartment 304, Yongsan-gu, Seoul”, and there’s absolutely no doubt about who the song is for. That person is still not there in front of you, so 당신 is okay. If you wrote this song for someone named Hee-Jin and you were singing it at a concert that she was attending, it would still be okay.  If, however, you write a song called “Hee Jin” for your girlfriend and then you decide to serenade her outside her window, I’d highly recommend you NOT use 당신 [but rather] Hee Jin. — Advertisements. Because it’s non-personal communication for a non-specific listener.  Even if YOU are there, the dude that wrote the ad is not. » « If you don’t know your interlocutor at all (eg. name, title, age, …), 당신 is not used commonly in speech, but you can use it if you really have no idea how to refer to a stranger and you feel you need to emphasize ‘you’ in a sentence. » (though you would usually rather use 그쪽 to address a stranger safely in a polite way) « 당신 is politer than 너, but is still not considered very polite because it is too direct to refer to someone as 'you' unless the two parties are on familiar terms. »
Note: ever since she met him, Joohyun used to adress KSJ as 권석주씨/Mr. KSJ, but she now calls him 교수님/Professor after he saved her life.
— This was the only time KSJ used 당신 to address Joohyun and in a moment he wanted to convey more personal feelings ; and even in the previous clause ('If you understand Gaetal for the reason I believe'), he addressed her as 주경위 (Insp. Joo): he could've just left the next clause ('then I deeply feel for you.') without a subject since we could understand from the context it was all about Joohyun.
KSJ always speaks to Joohyun with formal and informal high respect. It would make sense that he deliberately changed the way he usually addresses her, emphasizing the ‘you’ with 당신, to convey his compassion and regard her, as an individual and not the inspector, with respect.
Indeed, 당신 is a formal polite pronoun to call somebody that’s on equal footing with you so that would totally align with his conversation with Joohyun:
« Most of the relationships in this society are highly vertical. Comparing your boss to your parents or calling each other with your job titles shows it’s all about power. (…) Calling people by these titles gives you the feeling that you cannot mess with them. »
— Just before 당신 can be heard in the recording, we have a shot of Joohyun observing KMC, as if she’s ready to gauge KMC’s reaction once he hears what’s next.
Tumblr media
— The moment 당신 was played KMC redirected his attention to the recording, frowning ; his jaw clenching, he looked at Joohyun. Letting out a sigh and clicking his tongue, he then proceeded to ask « Anything that wasn’t recorded that’s bothering you? » in an aloof tone, averting his gaze.
When 당신 played:
Tumblr media
His reaction after the recording ended:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In addition to being restless because he wants to find leads in the investigation (thus not wanting to lose time over something he would deem useless), I can see why this could be read as KMC wanting to change the subject out of a bit of jealousy.
— Perhaps KSJ considered the possibility Joohyun might record their exchanges and, in all likelihood, make KMC listen to them since he’s her superior.
If that's the case, then 당신 could also address KMC as a non-specific audience: he was not there when Joohyun and him talked, and KSJ is not there when Joohyun plays the recording to KMC.
Through his exchange with Joohyun, KSJ manages to address the two of them: Joohyun, as he faced her in person, and if so KMC, indirectly through the recording.
Whether KMC realized it or not (provided this guess holds some truth) is another question though! Perhaps what this user saw as jealousy could also be read as emotion and then self-consciousness once he realized Joohyun watched?
This would not be the first time the three of them communicate through one another:
— KMC asks Joohyun to mention the ‘devils deemed innocent’ line when she interviews the inmates so that KSJ reacts to it.
— KSJ knows KMC listens Joohyun’s interview and addresses him directly in order to negotiate his pardon.
— You can notice it was first KMC who introduced Joohyun to KSJ (because he refused his visit request), but it’s now KSJ who wants Joohyun as her messenger. If Joohyun understood KSJ’s intentions, she then also tried to convey KSJ’s feelings to KMC: since KMC confided in her his guilt, and she thought that if KSJ hated him because he needed somebody to blame, she perhaps wanted to comfort him. That could also explain her smile in KMC’s direction because she maybe hoped to patch things up between the two of them.
After all, from the whole exchange, the drama showed KMC hearing this sole line on the rooftop: « If you understand Gaetal for the reason I believe, then I feel deeply for you. »
One could argue they wanted to direct our attention to this line in particular, and that’s exactly what Joohyun also does in the drama when she’s home:
Tumblr media
— She also made a similar expression (eyes widening and a half-smirk) to when she found KSJ said something interesting in ep2 (since she takes a particular interest in wording as she collects and analyzes data): did something catch her attention this time too?
Tumblr media
And this also reminds me of this moment in ep5:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It could be read the same way:
-> KMC is obviously startled because this specific request is unusual for KSJ
-> He looks apprehensive/alarmed about what this means (eg. did Gaetal instruct him? Is KSJ planning something on his own?). He could also be potentially worried for Joohyun!
-> KSJ looks like he definitely knows this exchange throws KMC off and he will have no choice but to accept the request anyway if he wants his help ; he also seems to be a bit amused by KMC’s reaction.
-> But his spite in front of KSJ (the tone of ’That won’t be possible’, the tensed head tilt, the tongue click and the corner of his lips twitching as he justifies his agreement in a heavy sigh ‘I was going to assign Lt. Joo for data analysis anyway, so this isn’t special treatment.’) & his exchange with Joohyun afterwards (esp. when she protests as he orders her to bring KSJ near the culprits to recognize Gaetal & she asks him why KSJ wants her to be his messenger) could be seen as bitterness over the whole situation.
This kind of dynamic between KMC and Joohyun could definitely align with their habit to investigate on their own without the other knowing because they have some reservations over fully trusting each other.
I didn’t catch it when I watched ep5, but Joohyun crossed both KMC, Choi Jinsu as well as BWT’s parents (who are deceased) from the list with red lines to rule them out as suspects.
Tumblr media
After looking nervous/embarrassed as she gets to KMC’s profile in front of KSJ, she bothered giving an explanation only as to why the last three were out of the suspects’ list. Which means she probably thought KSJ might not need one for KMC.
Tumblr media
tldr: those three have a triangular relationship going onnnnnnn (and I don’t even know which kind of triangle this is all about anymore at this point haha, Karpman’s? Love? Both?)

HELLO i saw a post of yours and was wondering if u still had that guide for navigating the kr movies..
i’m kinda new here and don’t really know how or when to watch them!? will i get spoiled if i watch a crossover with riders idk… Help
I got you bestie!
I do not have an official guide to the KR movies YET, but I am happy to make one! But for now, is there any movie in particular you wanted to watch, or any particular series you are interested in/have watched already? I can give you advice and recommendations specifically to you, so lmk!
Some crossover movies will give spoilers, and most non-crossover movies will also have them. For example, with OOOs, if you don't finish the series first before watching the OOOs movies, you will spoil yourself.
As for crossovers, let's say you watched the Ex-aid X Ghost movie, and you had watched Ghost but not Ex-aid, you will get spoilers for Ex-aid, if you understand. Your best bet is to watch any of the crossover movies with KR series you have already seen to avoid this. Also, anything that says "Kamen Rider (series name) X Kamen Rider (series name) with Legend Rider", avoid them until you have seen the Heisei series' because "Legend Rider" includes those. For example, "Kamen Rider Heisei Generations: Dr. Pac-Man vs. Ex-Aid & Ghost with Legend Rider" does not only contain Ex-aid and Ghost, but also Wizard and Drive, as they are the "Legend Riders".
I'm happy to help you find movies you can watch now, and give advice on series' to watch first if there's any particular movies you want to watch but not sure about spoilers.

Saw your post about the point of the storyline, which I 100% agree with. My potentially unpopular opinion is that the discrepancies in Oliver's interviews pre- and post-fall finale (and KR has them too, if you are feeling self-hating and decide to read her interviews 😂) are because TPTB changed the storyline. I really think that the original plan was to kill the parents and leave the baby with Buck. Obviously, someone convinced them that was NOT the way to go (understatement of the year!!) so we now have a totally pointless and random storyline that is leaving people contradicting themselves and struggling to make sense of it.
The alternative is that they truly have NO clue what to write for Buck outside of a relationship and just decided to do...this?? Which I would hate just as much!
I didn’t see too much chatter about that first theory. Killing off that couple to give Buck the baby is WILD to me🥴 i know that we don’t know what’s gonna happen but if that did happen I would truly be floored 😅
Now I’m gonna say something potentially controversial. I know the girls love to tussle but HEAR ME OUT FIRST.
This storyline is reminiscent of the cheating storyline last season for Buck. And by that I mean, nothing came from that storyline. His relationship didn’t end. Buck didn’t seem to have any consequences to those actions in his personal or professional life. It was laughed off and now that woman aint on the show anymore.
I have no proof to confirm this theory, but I believe the reaction to that particular story had the editors/showrunner doing some serious edits when it came to that white woman’s screen time. Cause for all the buildup of a “female Buck” and how this badass was gonna have Buck doing reckless shit….besides 5x11 we hardly saw that girl. And again, now she gone! 😅 so looking back that shit literally looks like it was just to give Buck something to do until he went to help with his husband and child Eddie & Chris and to bide time until his gf did that sneak shit and he had a valid reason to breakup with her.
Now, obviously we have 8 more episodes to go. We don’t know how this donor story is going to end but we do have Oliver pretty much saying that Buck did this understanding the ramifications when 6 months ago all signs (ON THE SHOW) pointed to it being a bad decision.
At the beginning of the season, we see Buck questioning the meaning of life, what happiness really looks like. If the donor story doesn’t bring up his feelings of self worth then whats the point? If it doesn’t explore the “spare parts” of it all, what’s the point? Buck has always done whatever he can for the people he cares about, we know that. It was never in question.
So if deciding to be a sperm donor for an old friend was completely in character for Buck and he made the decision understanding the “donor not dad” of it all and there was to be no emotional journey from it then I have to ask:
Tumblr media
As I said before, I know that we still have 8 more episodes. No one knows where this story is going to land. These are just MY thoughts with what we’ve gotten so far.

Not sure if you'll have an opinion on this, but I'm curious. I keep noticing a lot of casting connections between Japanese BL and another Japanese media genre I watch, and in particular one franchise. And I can't tell if it's A Thing or not. Maybe I'm just seeing it because I happen to watch both of these genres (maybe if I was into some other genre I'd see the same kind of overlap?), or for a mundane reason (e.g. maybe shows from both genres recruit actors of a certain sort/level of success?). It seems like more than a coincidence. But if it's not a coincidence, why would this happen?
The genre I'm talking about is tokusatsu shows. My family and I got into kaiju movies, then into Ultraman shows, and through that into other tokusatsu stuff. Around the same time, I got into Kdramas and eventually branched out to stuff from other parts of Asia and into BL. The franchise that most of the tokusatsu overlap happens with is Kamen Rider.
My sample size is small as I'm a recent convert to BLs, which is a weakness for this tentative argument, but I really think this might be noteworthy...maybe? Here's what I've got so far (noting years because the time range is interesting):
Senpai, This Can't Be Love! is full of Kamen Rider alums. I knew both leads (from Saber, 2020, and Ex-Aid, 2016) and their boss (from Ryuki, 2002), then heard from others on here that two other minor characters were on KR shows I haven't seen yet. This is the most extreme example by far and may be skewing my perception.
I knew Takeda Kouhei of Old Fashion Cupcake from Kamen Rider Kiva (2008), where his character is the polar opposite of Nozue (overconfident, flamboyant, girl-crazy). But then I found out he was a regular on Kamen Rider Build (2017) as well.
Less clear-cut and in the opposite direction, Nishijima Hidetoshi was in What Did You Eat Yesterday? (just heard about this quasi-BL from one of your posts) before being the lead in Kamen Rider Black Sun this year. He was also just in Shin Ultraman, the only overlap between Ultraman and the BL world I've noted so far.
At this point anyone reading this is probably picturing me like that meme of a wild-eyed Charlie Day in front of his conspiracy-theory wall collage. But I keep wondering. Is there someone in a studio role responsible for BL who's a huge Kamen Rider fan? A veteran casting director from Toei making a leap to a studio that produces BLs? Or maybe I just have a case of apophenia (unfounded pattern-finding).
Wondering if you might have some insight.
My guess is that it's actually agency stables in play. Talent agencies and casting directors get in each others pockets a lot. So often you'll see cross over actors, sets of actors, like the casting director fielded the agency's team.
Usually this is because the casting director notified the agency of the roles available and the agency also looked into all the sides, extras, etc and basically blanketed the couch with possibilities from thier stable.
So for example, Takara & Amagi are both played by Jpop idols, but while they're form different groups, they share the same talent agency.
To My Star stars Son Woo Hyun & Kim Kang Min are from the same agency and were also both in The Golden Spoon and Tale of the Nine-Tailed.
If you watch Kdramas as well as KBL you'll start to see this a lot with the sides and extras. I think Japan operates similarly. Something like Absolute BL fielded a ton of familiar faces and I think quite a few of them were from the same agency.
If casting has a good working relationship going with an agency, they can just ring them up from set to send someone over real quick if there has been a drop out or a sudden need for an extra. It's a kind of laziness but also the result of long relationships and industry networking. Also actors will travel in packs and get pulled in just because they're hanging around set while their friend is shooting, and they're often friendly because they share an agency.
I wouldn't be surprised if a number of the better KBL lead pairs turn out to be from the same talent agency and to have at least socially known each other before filming. I've never cared enough to look into it, but I would take an educated guess at 50% or so.
It's all about networking in ET.

For the dvd commentary meme - please tell us about the first part of 'two shadows pale and naked'
Thank you anon! I'm very fond of that fic because I felt like it indulged all my post-canon Flustered Laurent feelings, and the beginning was crucial to setting that up. We start on the note of his internal disarray ("he couldn’t concentrate, couldn’t think") and then never quite allow him to regain his equilibrium.
His thought process throughout this first section is super slow and granular, taking note of almost every new development in his own mind -- it's something I drew from the early Laurent POV chapter in KR, where he had a very deliberate intentionality to his patterns of thought. And at the same time, in the midst of all this attention to detail, the only thing he really notices is Damen: he'll note that the kyroi are fighting or the meeting is deteriorating, but he observes Damen in a much more physical, visceral way. Even as early as that first paragraph: "the only thoughts his mind saw fit to provide him was — Damen, in Karthas, his broad body limned by golden lamplight, the shift of muscles beneath his skin, the way his chiton had slipped and fallen from his shoulders like a fainting maiden…" is much more detail than is afforded to any of the kyroi or the particulars of the meeting he's in. Because he is in the grips of Obsession <3

Truth….I’m actually a bit disgusted right now with SOME of the fandom. We had a beautiful and heart breaking episode last night about trauma within a Black community and about topics that are very much happening in our communities. Yet, I’ve got discourse flying across my dash trying to rationalize how Marisol and Felisa can’t possibly be love interests, TPTB wouldn’t do that now would they? Honestly, have never hit the block button so fast. Like not surprising in ways but going forward I know exactly who is part of the performative activism crew now because it’s 100% transparent what they are watching the show for and hey consume media how you like but really the vibes are not great….and sadly it’s probably going to be the same when we get the HenRen focused episodes 🙁🙁🙁.
Not that you or anyone else needs my co-sign, but I, too, have become increasingly aware of how some bloggers truly are only here for Buck, or Eddie, or BuckandEddie, and acknowledge the others when they can "fit" into speculation/headcanons - like when the video of Buck at Henren's door was posted and suddenly he wouldn't be going to anyone other than Eddie for help unless it was about Eddie?? And his feelings for Eddie?? I've always been transparent about the fact that the Buckley-Diaz family (and all the characters on the outside of it) is what I feel most comfortable giving my thoughts on because it's what I "understand" the best. But that's the good thing about being in a fandom like this. We're surrounded by people who can offer perspective on the parts of the show that we personally don't/cannot relate to, people who call us out on our shit when we're missing the point. Tumblr shouldn't be the totality of someone's informed opinion on a particular subject, but it's a place to start, especially considering how little exposure some folks have to these very serious issues in their everyday lives. I want to draw attention to the very last part of your ask - "it’s probably going to be the same when we get the HenRen focused episodes" - because my biggest gripe with 9-1-1 in KR's time as showrunner is how there's been episodes involving characters of color, scenes that should matter if you're a fan of the show and its themes rather than a shipper first and foremost, but they have been overshadowed by the inclusion of TayKay just because the options for re-integrating the character into the show were limited given her profession. Take First Responders, right. Tracie Webber's disappearance was an admission by the show that missing Black women don't get the same media attention as their white counterparts. There was one post (one!!!) that I saw constantly cross my dash discussing it, and then people were reblogging gifs of TayKay as if her face and clothes and ~chemistry~ with Buck were the most important part of the night. 🤨 And then on the other side, people were complaining about her presence. (I wasn't thrilled, but I know I didn't type out fifty different posts to express my feelings.) The same can be said for an episode like Ghost Stories (which I will never shut up about) - Yes, it sucked that Eddie wasn't needed/was possibly cut from the final edit after reshoots. Yes, it sucked that we had to endure TayKay playing detective. But it was *also* when we got Henren, and quality Karen content, AND got to see Chimney! And I'll even throw another detail in there - it was the episode where we finally got a resolution to the trauma inflicted by Jeffrey because Harry went home to his family and we saw a "feel-good" reunion.
9-1-1 is not going to be about BuckandEddie every week. It's not supposed to. This is not Supernatural. There are more than two main characters. Not all of them are white, and not all of them are men. It's a little something for everyone.

I roughly re-did the typesetting for this particular comic. The original artist is bungpa6, who is not to blame for the typesetting, as the text is written, translated, and typeset by Hoyoverse.
The 1st is the original, the others are my edits. The fonts I used are Animeace, Collect Em All, Meanwhile and Markerman.
The English translation had a terrible font unfit for comics, as well as errors not even a newbie would overlook, such as the text falling out of the speech bubble without a white border being applied, double spaces at line breaks, as well as the text not being centered even though it’s dialogue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I had to crudely enlarge the speech bubble, but it only took about 5 minutes.

ENG (translation) and KR (original) posted on the official accounts.
Another edit:

The font they used here is Al Nile, which is okay as a font, but using it in comics is a really weird choice. I used Animeace in my edit since I don’t have the Bold version of Collect Em All. Here I used Meanwhile:

I don’t suggest using Animeace, but I used it as an example as other viable options opposed to anything that doesn’t look like the Default font, since it’s a free font. You can use lowercase for comics, if you want, but you should at least choose a fitting font.

Hear me out, TCF fandom
I have been trying to write a post about the novel or the fandom which could be termed as Critics and I think that its finally time I let it out. So here are some things that I don't like about TCF or the TCF Fandom.
The dynamic play of how the fandom has created between Eruhaben and KRS!Cale. Now here me, I love how Eruhaben worries about Cale and how he is adamant about staying with him. But the TCF Fandom has portrayed this as something like this: "Cale is so powerful that his strength [ IN TERMS OF AP'S] is equal to dragons" Like no? Cale is not and will not ever be equal to a dragon just because he is surrounded by many. He has multiple AP's yes. But that doesn't makes him as powerful as a dragon. The reason why their is a distinction between dragons and humans is because of how powerful they are in terms of strength, magic, and swordsmanship. And also Knowledge. The reason why Eruhaben and Raon has been Useful to Cale because they are unmatched in all of those. Say if Cale was really even a part powerful like a dragon then wouldn't it make them and the other dragons useless. Thus forgoing of their initial purpose. So is Cale greater or equal to Eruhaben in any of those? No.
2. The times a particular topic has been repeated. This is for Choi Han, Kim Rok Soo and Raon. How many times have we read the same thing over and over about Kim Rok Soo and Choi Han. I don't know about you guys but I have read it at least 5 to 6 times in the 700+ chapter Novel. I understand how the author is trying to remind us how much Trauma a particular Character has went through and it is important to remember the incidents [ The forest of Darkness and how Kim Rok Soo has lost many people] because it makes them who they are now. But is it necessary for us read it all the time? No. Instead we could have shown other Character's backstory like Bud, Rosalyn, Zed etc.
3. How there is literally no gap between the battles , war , fights etc.If you notice carefully Cale is moving around a lot. That's good because it keeps us interested but it is unimpressive. There is no gap of days between the Henituse war and the battleship war in the northeast Ubarr territory. Even enemies need to be mindful of their tactics. They lunge forward after a massive loss when they should be re-evaluating their situation. But we don't see either Cale's side or the enemies to be taking a rest or having a break. which is tiring to read.
I will write others in part two. I understand if you don't like my thoughts but I think whatever I have said is true.

this may be a silly question but what's the reason you don't want folks tagging your posts as 9s2b as opposed to 2b9s? does it mean something different? I'm just curious, no hate :)
at its core 2b9s and 9s2b are pretty much the same but some ppl are very particular about the dynamic so they change the order of names in a ship to indicate who takes the lead/is the dominant one/whatever so 9S is the dominant one in 9s2b and 2B is the dominant one in 2b9s you get the picture. its more common in the jp/kr side of fandoms and it never really picked up on the western side so people just tend to group both dynamics into one ship over here (which is kinda invonvenient to those who wanna see content of a specific dynamic imo But thats fandoms for ya)
personally i just find 9s2b to not be my thing (plus ive had some. less than stellar experiences w 9s2b fans in the past and ive just tried to stay in my own circle of ppl who also like 2b9s since then) so in the end it all just comes down to the matter of preference really

As for the lcf video, I really hope to one day be able to finish it since it's practically a love letter to LCF and Soos in particular, though it takes a lot of energy to make... But I do not wish to abandon it! It would leave the past me really sad to see their project of love unfinished :')
I'm happy you like my art, and I hope you continue to enjoy all the great webnovels out there!!! 🙌💕

SaL anon here my friend and, well, I for one am happy I watched the LS finale after the OG finale, at least the evening ended on a good note. So at the risk of really getting salty, let's talk about these two shows (when your up for it, I'd get it if your still didappointed). So I'll just say it, it's painfully obvious that Tim switched over to LS, not just because of how 911 OG has suffered but because I actually feel that the LS season as a whole was far better than OG's. No it's not perfect
there's still way too much Owen in relation to the other mains, but let's compare. The OG season intro was the blackout, not nearly as entertaining as it looked because we had to have copaganda. The LS season intro was the ice storm which not only distributed time across all the mains but had some beautiful, emotional moments plus set up future episodes. Most of the calls on OG were just there, like they didn't connect to anything really (probably because they were supposed to be  showcasing L but since so much of her time was cut they come off as pointless. On LS I felt like most of the calls either tied in with the plot or into a particular characters storyline, even if they were silly ones (Lou the Lizard was pure joy). While LS has a few "meh" episodes or storylines none were so divisive and made the audience incandescently mad as the crap OG pulled the season, particularly in relation to Buck. The introduction of a questionable guest storyline in LS  ended up being an actual delight that wasn't pushed down the audiences throat (meaning Wyatt being Judd's son). Meanwhile on OG we have the whole L debacle, for which the storyline (meaning setting her up as a LI) got cut when it was hated so she was just there taking up screen time. In fact LS in general wasted incredibly little time on guest stars while in OG, well you know. Finally, since this is getting long, there's the finale. LS ended with an emergency that fed into  storylines and wrapped them up with a truly happy ending, including the Tarlos engagement which had been but up all season. OG ended with nonsense/gross calls that went nowhere, barely wrapping up Eddie's storyline which is probably the only thing that kept most people watching all season, and a breakup that sooo much time was wasted to build toward when they literally could have had that storyline anywhere in the season because TayKay was the same!! I know we've compared kr's  version of 911 to CAM running RNM over and over again but the biggest similarity is one of the reasons this season is so bad, so much of it was just done for shock value, and usually lead nowhere. The L kiss was the biggest example, it didn't contribute anything to Buck's breakup. The whole Jonah torture scene was the same, as was the creepy rapist cult. The big 5b set pieces I guess were supposed go be dramatic, but they fell flat. Buck and Chim's fallout just got resolved ***oh no Tumblr ate the post!*** SaL anon here bestie and I think I ended up with 7 parts (though I might have mislabeled some) and definitely got yelled at by tumblr for posting too many asks in 1 hour (my cue i really was rambling at that point) so the last one might have indeed gotten eaten. Pretty sure I ended with the oft repeated sincere wish both kr and L be gone next season for all our sanity. But I'm happy to see your feeling the salt too, can't wait to hear your thoughts!!
Oh bestie, where do we start? I would like to point out for the record that I never thought we would get Buddie roommates, gay Eddie reveal, or explicate Buddie hints in this episode, so I’m not disappointed about speculation that didn’t come true. I know a lot of people can get their hopes up on speculation (I’m guilty sometime myself!) and then get disappointed when it doesn’t happen, but my disappointment is pretty much tied up in what a waste of time most of this episode felt like. Like, it was fine I guess for a filler episode, but a) the finale shouldn’t be a filler episode, and b) the finale that includes a missed opportunity wedding moment shouldn’t cram that moment into the last 3 minutes of a filler episode, in a montage split with everyone out doing different things! (Also Toni apparently officiated? But we hear NOTHING about that after her missing their wedding because she was not originally on board with her daughter marrying a woman?! How was that not bigger news?!)
Anyway, my disappointment is about other things but first, for sparking joy, lets talk about LS! I have my gripes with the show which will probably come up later, but (sorry LS and LS fans) I’m not as invested in LS so I’m happier to just see where it goes and enjoy the good moments we get. Because overall it WAS a good season! I was ready to roll my eyes at the whole Wyatt storyline, but the moment he was introduced and was such a sweet young man and his appearance was handled so well, I was on board. And what a fun little arc it turned out to be! We got some really heartfelt moments for the Ryder family this season!
As always, I want more/longer/in depth storylines and absolutely more balanced screentime in general in every episode for characters like Marjan, Nancy, Mateo, Paul, Carlos, and Grace, but this season definitely worked at giving them all moments to shine, and shine they did! They also really leaned into the “126 hangs” and showing the younger crew constantly in each other’s pockets which was really nice to see. I also didn’t totally hate Tommy’s storylines this season. They hinted at her starting to date and it felt like a huge HARD PASS, but they bumped it out a few weeks and the pacing felt right and when it came it was a disaster but in a gentle, human way and really set her up to be ready to move on. I know the Julius thing is divisive, but I saw it coming so I was already braced for impact and it honestly could have been worse so 🤷🏻‍♀️ We all know the whole Owen situation is what it is, but I didn’t like, hate him every second. I actually really enjoyed a lot of his scenes and the ones I didn’t were more just me rolling my eyes and then ignoring them or forgetting about them immediately, it didn’t totally kill my joy in the season, more like a minor annoyance I’ve (mostly) learned to live with as long as I don’t think about it too much and get riled up.
And Tarlos!! I had some different expectations for them, but honestly after struggling with the OG all season it was really nice to see them being so domestic and soft most of the time, and the angst we did get was always pushing the characters towards growth, both for themselves and for their relationship. The engagement was so well earned! I also love that we got to see TK go from someone was so nervous to tell his dad about proposing because he knew his dad wouldn’t agree and proposing in place he normally wouldn’t go (literally out of his comfort zone) only to get rejected and told he was being cheated on, to someone who proposed at 3:18 in the morning after waking the love of his life up because he literally could not wait another minute to tell Carlos he wanted to leave everything to his husband. No fear of rejection, no popping the question to try and salvage things when there was distance and trouble between him and his partner, no big build up to try and make everything perfect, just a quiet, personal proposal made entirely from an overflowing of love, safety, security, and JOY about the future. LOVE this for them. (Also Lou the Lizard WAS pure joy and probably traumatized Carlos for life 🤣)
But overall it was a really strong season with a lot of delightful moments and I very much enjoyed myself and enjoyed watching each episode, even if I had almost no idea what was coming up after OG came back and my brain was busy with that mess. I will absolutely be watching this whole season again which I don’t think I can say about OG for the first time ever as I’m not one to skip scenes or episodes ever when re-watching things.
Anyway this bit already got long and the rest is…salt gremlin-y so it’s going under a cut. Also I have been working on this for ages after a very brain melting day at work so it’s barely edited and probably a mess and is definitely entirely too long. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
Okay, I’m glad I’m not the only one who felt very “meh” about the calls this season. And I don’t know if it’s because usually they tied into what the mains were going through that episode, but most of the mains didn’t have a lot going on so we were missing that connection, or what, but they were pretty lackluster overall for me this season, especially in 5b. 5a at least had the hostage situation, the hospital call and that adorable wlw oil spill call to name a few.
The most egregious of course was the finale. The truck call gave us a reminder of Dosed but the truck going off the cliff ultimately amounted to nothing! They could have had the man get stuck in a tree while the people hounded him from below as the callback to 2x06 for all the effect that call ended up having. It felt more like something dramatic they could put in the trailer to hype the episode without actually having any baring on anything. The hair salon call could have gone at any point this season, or not at all! I’m still confused on how you’d get maggots from hair if they were getting it directly from the funeral home. It’s not like they were digging up bodies that were decomposing or anything! They use cadaver skin as a temporary covering before permanent grafts so like, WHY did we have to witness that?! And the amnesia couple, while very sweet, and actually having something to do with “starting over” and what love and partnership mean, also felt like WAY too much because of all the other calls! And they easily could have worked in a different way for Buck and Maddie to have that discussion, it didn’t need to be tied up in a call that needed set up, rescue, 2 scenes at the hospital, and a whole montage about their life story, in the finale that should have been focused on our mains. Then again, what else is new this season.
Honestly, 5x17 should have focused more on Eddie and the set up for the Jonah storyline and ended on the “Hen getting taken” cliffhanger (like seasons 2, 3, and 4 all ended on cliffhangers leading into the big story for the finale), and let the finale deal with the rescue and subsequent fallout. Because Buck brought up something very interesting that, not to brag, I totally called which was the LAFD raising questions about who talked to the press before the LAFD even had a chance to really start their investigation and determine what if anything needed to be public knowledge while the investigation was on-going. I have another ask or two about the breakup so I’ll go into my feelings about that more there and how it ties into this issue, but they could have made a little more of it to fill out the finale and lead to Buck’s arc next season, instead of random filler calls. But you’re absolutely right that this breakup could have happened at any point because it’s literally their first argument all over again, and she is exactly the same as she’s always been.
At least we got to see Maddie for the most part make her big decision on screen though I would have killed for a conversation with her and Sue about coming back. But I’m trying not to be salty about how little we saw of Maddie after Boston because I know they were likely working around JLH’s requested schedule, which she deserves. I just think there were a scene or two that they used her for that they maybe didn’t need to so she COULD be used in places where it made more sense. For example, her showing up to the hospital after Karen did and seeing her with Chim and when he asks where Jee is she says with Uncle Buck which then cuts to Buck watching Jee and seeing the news and leaving the message for tay kay.
Most of my disappointment comes from, as I mentioned, Henren’s big moment being a wordless montage in the middle of cuts to people doing other things, and the show teasing May and Eddie making big decisions, only for them to not actually SHOW US them making those decisions! *screams into pillow* Eddie and his arc carried 5b on it’s back, and has consistently been brought up on SM as one of the only things keeping people interested in 5b. So for him to barely have any time all episode, for them to not bring up what happened with his dad last week, or make a big deal about him being back on the team or talking to anyone about going back on the team, and for him to be relegated to the back of the group shot with his “replacement” (that was never needed) in front of him, really felt like a slap in the face. (At least we got Oliver Buck making heart eyes and smiling at having his partner back, I guess?)
The truck scene was…also a slap in the face making Chim be the one to stick up for the person who insulted him behind his back and was besties with Jonah, and it was a slap in the face to Buck saying he should be the one to lose his family if he steps out of line because they would rather have her, which is LITERALLY everything Buck is sensitive about made into a “joke” to keep shoving this character down our throats. The “families” montage at the end during the ceremony not only gave us NOTHING on the Buckely-Diaz family front (disappointed but not surprised), but also gave us Eddie sitting between Chim and some rando, and Buck next to L, and sitting at least 2 people away from Eddie, IF Ravi or L were next to Chim which I don’t think we even know for sure.
I wasn’t expecting any conversation about Buck and Chim’s relationship because, like the will, KR flat out said she thought those things were resolved and didn’t need to be brought up again. HOWEVER, as we have seen time and time again like with lots of people asking about Eddie’s recovery/PTSD, and Buck Begins, sometimes they do take dropped threads and bring them back up again so we might get some Chim/Buck fallout, especially if Buck is going to be going through it next season. So I don’t want to hear it that people who complained were wrong because some of these things DID come back up. They could, but only if Tim decides they’re important because KR doesn’t think they are 🤷🏻‍♀️
You’re soooo right about this being reminiscent of CAM and RNM with things being done for shock value and then never brought up again, and big things happening off screen that we’re told about later that we SHOULD be seeing. And god can you imagine if they HADN’T cut the L stuff after the backlash about the kiss?! They wanted to have them “poking” at each other all goddamn season while Buck was still with his gf, only for that to not have anything to do with the breakup?! Seriously they not only greenlight this whole thing, but wrote, and FILMED it and NO ONE along the way thought to say “maybe let’s not?” until they got the overwhelming backlash?! I mean, Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ.
This is far too long already and I desperately need to shut up but I am manifesting SO HARD that they decide to cut their losses and get rid of L over the hiatus in a single throwaway line like they did with Ali (no shade, she doesn’t deserve to be lumped in with L, I’m so sorry!) and then we never see or hear from her again. My cynical side says they cut as much as they did to keep ratings for this season but also to not give the GA anything MORE to hate about her so they could start fresh in season 6 when most of them have forgotten all about the kiss that amounted to nothing and just remember seeing her face and that she was “around”. So I’m bracing for that, BUT I am…absolutely being a petty ass bench about nearly every single specific thing AK teased about this season after 5x11 being cut. No sweet bonding moments with Chim, Bobby, Eddie, or Buck, no teaming up with Bobby to tease Buck, no rock, paper, scissors with her and Buck on a call, no “poking” with Buck, no talking about her family with the team, no big build up leading to something “big” in the finale, not even really anything about her story being left “open” to return next season because she HAD no story! She was just *there* at the end, which people have already talked about being super confusing because she was Eddie’s replacement so how is she there still if he’s back?
Anyway, on the bright side, we did get some really good, sweet, and heartfelt moments which I’m looking forward to sharing gifs of, and this season we at least got a LOT of phenomenal Eddie content in 5b (and they will hopefully keep that up), we got some surprising yet utterly delightful new friendships (or frenemies) with Eddie at dispatch (and Maddie in Boston), we got Hen and Chim besties, some VERY loud Buddie/Buckley-Diaz family stuff, Buck finally setting himself free from the red-headed leach sucking the light and life out of him (now he just needs to lose the loft, but on his OWN terms, not hers), and Ravi, as always, bringing a sparkle to every scene he's in. If ANYONE deserves to be named as part of the 118 family it’s him. That man has put in the WORK. And by WORK, I mean he has suffered as only family can make you suffer.
Cheers, bestie! Here's to a nice hiatus of songs and Buck/Eddie/Buddie feels and soon Malex feels as well!

Masaya Aoyama in Korean, S1
This evening (yes, for me is evening now 😆) the last episode in Korean has been aired. It seems a guy on Twitter particularly liked Masaya’s character or his voice actor, because he posted all his scenes. Generally speaking, if I have to compare him with Japanese dub, Uchida is better. However, the Korean dubber has peaks in certain points where he’s even better than Uchida. Here I’ll post and comment all his scenes.
EPISODE 1
Here I don’t like him very much. He doesn’t seem excited at all when she invites him to the museum and when they chat. I think the VA has yet to “enter” in his character. However, when she’s fainted and he calls her, he seems really worried, even more than Japanese, I like him there!
EPISODE 2
Nothing to say here, it’s okay but he doesn’t sigh like in JP
EPISODE 3
For 3rd episode, there’s only the final clip. Mmmh, pretty much like Uchida, but he seems even more worried in certain points.
EPISODE 4
Like Japanese dub, nothing particular to say.
EPISODE 5
Even here, nothing to say, it’s like Japanese.
EPISODE 6
In Japanese Masaya is completely silent, in Korean he gasps, so he seems more surprised.
EPISODE 7
For all the episode is like Uchida, but I don’t like when he calls for her in the end. He doesn’t seem worried at all. Even when Masaya thanks her, in Japanese he has more emotion in his voice.
EPISODE 8
Again, nothing to say, it’s like Japanese.
EPISODE 9 (and this other part, in their English)
Ok, you can’t beat that “kichatta 🎵” from JP dub. But I absolutely adore his gasp in the end, when Ichigo accepts his invite. He seems even happier and more relieved than JP dub. Oh, kudos both to him and Zakuro’s VA for their English, is very good!
EPISODE 10
This is one of the few parts where I prefer Korean dub. When he whispers in Ichigo’s ear, here he seems more spontaneous and... aroused? I can’t imagine what would have happened if they were in his house and not on the street. 😆
And by the way, this is valid for both JP and KR... why don’t use real dog barks for Rau instead of that weird acute voice? Meh...
EPISODE 11
Like JP, nothing particular here.
EPISODE 12
Incredible to say, but some parts of rain scene are better than Japanese! His sigh when he runs to her, his crying when he hugs her and confesses, add emotions and show he was so badly worried for her. However, I liked more in JP when he tells her about her hair, bc you can really understand he’s making up an excuse at the moment, while in KR he’s too calm. His sigh at the end is better in JP and has more emotion.

South Korean Government Program to Import Filipina Maids
Tweets from Raphael Rashid (koryodynasty)
The South Korean government is considering a pilot programme to import Filipina maids to Seoul later this year to ease childcare burdens and address the low birthrate problem. But concerns have been raised about forced labour and impact on local workers. https://www.news1.kr/articles/5041042
Bringing foreign nannies and housekeepers to South Korea to help increase the country's birthrate is not a new idea. Recently, the proposal sparked outrage when politicians wanted them to be exempt from the minimum wage. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/mar/30/foreign-maids-and-no-military-service-south-korea-criticised-over-ideas-to-boost-birthrate
Under the new proposal, the maids would be subject to the minimum wage, which is KRW 9620/hour, and the plan is to have them commute to and from work instead of living in their employers' homes.
The monthly salary for working 8 hours/day, 5 days/week, incl. holidays, is around 2 million won, which is less than the salary for Korean or Chinese domestic workers, the latter of whom in particular are already subject to discrimination and human rights abuses.
The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) has demanded that the government scrap the idea, raising concerns about the labour rights of female migrant workers and the quality of care for children. http://nodong.org/statement/7814948
It said that the visa under which the women would enter, the E-9, which is typically reserved for low-skilled workers, is a form of modern-day slavery with weak labour rights protections, and that women are exposed to sexual violence due to limited ability to move workplace.
The KCTU also raised the issue of potential exploitation and abuse given their vulnerable position as non-native speakers and foreigners in an unfamiliar culture.
The focus for now seems to be on bringing maids from the Philippines, and other Southeast Asian countries. Critics are saying their introduction would undercut the existing market leading to job losses, and that the government should focus on nurturing workers at home.
Other concerns are that if foreign maids are paid minimum wages and commute from their homes, they will not be able to save much money after house and commute expenses are deducted. https://english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_national/1091243.html
More importantly, there are concerns that such a system would fail to address the issue at hand: the low birthrate. Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon is the most vocal supporter of this proposal, expressing a strong desire to bring in foreign domestic workers.
In a Facebook post, Oh agreed with Nobel laureate Michael Kremer, a professor at the University of Chicago, who believes that Korea needs an immigration policy that includes a special visa programme for foreign domestic workers, similar to Hong Kong and Singapore.
Tumblr media
While such a system would undoubtedly benefit some families who already have children or those who definitely want children, it is unclear whether the birthrate would actually increase. Singapore and Hong Kong have some of the world's lowest birth rates.
