i went to a "party" today and because a group of us were just waiting for the rest of them to finish the partying i put on Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva. unfortunately, we didn't find where the remote was so we could turn up the volume, so most of the movie was in silence except for the part that played 'Song of the Sun' and 'Eternal Diva', in which i just played the ost from my phone.
things that happened during the viewing session:
child who was there decided professor layton always knew the answer to everything from the intro and was deus ex machina
same child calling janice during the play "queen elizabeth"
same child started calling the game for eternal life squid game
me: "why do they say 'puzzle 001' as if the puzzles in this movie ever go above the single digits?" (yes, in game it like that. but also the english dub is like "puzzle zero zero one" instead of just puzzle one)
one person looked at the situation with whistler saying "i named my newly adopted child after the one that just died" and just went 🤨
people just being in pure shock as grosky survived sharks and surviving the boat exploding
also they were also calling grosky a gigachad
"man, these kids should be having trauma from seeing the boat explode. they didn't see the submarines, they probably think people died."
(i didn't want to say they've been through worse)
"btw, luke can speak to animals. this literally only comes up here when he tries to speak to the wolves and the wolves don't listen to him" "i'm fucking sorry, he can speak to animals???"
i went "watch this shit" as layton preceded to build the flying machine, because wtf layton
"wow his hat is glued on"
i didn't really give much context to descole, and we couldn't hear his voice, so nobody really says much about him for the rest of the movie and i didn't want to reveal any other prequel trilogy spoilers :(
when grosky was found, him being called a gigachad intensified
and then laughter as grosky lost his underwear
no one guessed what was going on with nina when layton confronted her about being melina
one person said emmy reminded him of that one guy from curious george??? anyways, the child called her the hulk after seeing her destroy several of descole's henchmen
"oh no! luke has the memory machine on him! wait huh?"
me going "here it comes, here it comes-" as layton prepared to the point
"oh, this guy has kidnapped several young girls to do this!?"
"why did no one stop descole!??"
"man, these wolves are so thin, they could snap them in half"
"gundam!?" at the giant robot
i meant to talk about it during the watch session and forgot, but the fact that descole is controlling the robot using the detragon??? my man built a organ that sounds like an orchestra, can store memories of a person, and controls a full on mecha???
i showed one person this one layton poll and he guessed "he has several kids"
i told him which one was true and he was like "oh i kinda expected that one to be true considering the others", afksjd;clksmklc
i also asked which one is most surprising to him as being true afterwards, and he said "layton didnt actually give a shit about puzzles until he saw his friend die", which is fair
"man, janice has crazy grip strength"
"descole pulled that sword out of his pants... wait-"
me: "Sword fight time, lets go!!!"
two people said the sword fight between layton and descole was extremely well animated (true)
"why is layton playing the songs??? isn't that accomplishing descole's goal??? and why isn't descole stabbing him???"
*descole yeets a sword at him* "oh, now descole tries to continue the fight"
"c'mon, layton grab the sword!" *doesn't grab the sword in time*
not a single person says anything about descole falling off and him being not apprehended or found after the fact :'(
*detragigant falling into the sea* "pollution!"
"janice is gonna wake up and be so confused" "she was communicating with melina, they literally just showed that-"
one person ended up saying to the kid, who was saying a lot of random stuff during the movie, "shut up, i am actually invested", which lks;vmknzopdinpa??? i just gave extremely generalized descriptions of layton, luke, janice, and emmy, so the movie did the rest
i specifically made sure to make them watch the credits to show grosky finding his underwear in the credit stills, which was so worth it for their reaction
they did also say that all the other people in the prison would be terrified of having whistler in the same cell as them
anyways, i recommend watching this movie with sound on, but also two people actively were watching the movie despite knowing only the basic information i gave to them on the characters and nothing on the video game series despite that. so yeah, movie good.

The story behind Inspector Hasting's name:
Hastings: So, you are really the daughter of the famous Professor Layton? Funny story, my parents named me after him.
Katrielle: You're name is Hershel?
Hastings: Not exactly.
Flashback....
Nurse: Congratulations, it's a boy! Do you know what you'll be naming him?
Bishop: We decided to name him after the man that inspired us to be good people. Mr... Umm... Her-something. What was it?
Rook: I think it was Hercule. Professor Hercule Layton.
Bishop: Ah yes, of course! *writes Ercule Hastings on the birth certificate.*
Katrielle: Ok. Cool. *Internally* What the fuck?

“But that’s not how it works!”
“Okay, but get this.”
I have two morons Professor Layton OCs that I’d love to introduce to you all! Meet Tom and Davina! If I could draw them in the PL artstyle, I would. Unfortunately, I cannot not. :pensive:
Prepare to see more of these losers in the future!
More information on the two below the fold!
Tumblr media
“Though seemingly reserved and not very expressive, Tom is a sharp-tongued and witty English boy living in America. He has a bit of trouble with reading, but this doesn’t affect his ability to read sheet music and his excellent piano playing, nor his puzzle-solving skills. Despite being a brilliant bluffer, he doesn’t hide his feelings for a certain friend very well.”
You heard the blurb! It’s Tom Clarke, a character I once described to a friend as “a British dumbass with smartass energy.”
Some basic info:
His full name is Thomas Mark Clarke. His parents (and me, lol) made it rhyme on accident.
He’s 13 in Unwound Future.
He’s supposed to be 5’7”, but I feel bad for Layton when I draw Tom taller than him.
He thinks he’s straight, but he’s probably some amount of Demi.
He’s from the Northern UK. His hometown will appear in a story I swear I’ll write.
Some fun facts:
He’s not one to become invested in any media, instead opting to engage in what his friends enjoy. As such, Davina convinced Tom to learn the entire soundtrack of The Eternal Kingdom on piano. He went above and beyond, translating the entirety of The Eternal Diva into melody-compliant German as a joke.
Tom takes fencing classes and formerly took dance classes. These aren’t the most beneficial skills in the world, but his dad made him take them.
Speaking of dance, his six years of dance class never made him hate the activity. He loves to dance when he has the chance. He’s surprisingly good at waltzing.
He’s way too good at ice skating. It may be on account of his six years of dance, but either way, he’s way too good. Just because you lived in an icy climate for the first ten years of your life doesn’t mean you get to be a show-off.
His parents forgot his middle name. They keep calling him Michael, but he’s adamant that it’s Mark. They don’t listen. Davina is conscious of this but calls him Michael to piss him off.
Tom likes the more riddle-y kinds despite his literate ineptitude. He’s good at math puzzles but doesn’t like how much you have to think about them.
Tom plays chess and is surprisingly good at it, maybe even falling into the tryhard category. He doesn’t play for fun but will let inexperienced players clown on the craft to get used to it and have fun. He primarily plays black.
He’s not really one to visually express his emotions. The most you’ll ever get out of him is a small smile, a raised eyebrow, or the look you get in a restaurant when you’ve been waiting for your food for 20 minutes and are very peeved, but you don’t want to look impolite as you wait for 40 more minutes. When you do get emotion out of him, it’s usually when he’s speaking and is very distinct.
He moved to California (Japanifornia?) just after Last Specter. He– very distinctly– did not want to move. Tom’s fine with America, now.
He’s related to Flora. They’re third cousins, to be exact. No one knows/has realized it and won’t for a while.
Luke and Tom have been friends since around the age of 5, and they’ve been pen pals since about the age of 7. Even after Tom moved, they kept in close contact!
When he met Randall, he (without hesitation, mind you) said, “The Masked Gentleman is a twink?” It’s the hardest Davina has ever laughed.
-------------------------------
Tumblr media
“Underneath a timid and aloof demeanor, Davina is a bright young girl invested in the arts and humanities. She has an eye for art on par with the professor’s and is an artist herself, taking any time she has to draw the things around her. Her love of music and ancient civilizations has led to an admiration for The Eternal Kingdom and the work of Desmond Sycamore.”
Yep, it’s Davina Alavara! She’s Tom’s best friend and occasional travel partner! Every adventure she’s been on wasn’t planned, and she didn’t sign up for any of this.
Basic info:
Davina is 13 in Unwound Future.
She’s just a bit shorter than Luke, so like 4’10”.
She is very ace.
As stated in her blurb, Davina is from America, specifically California (Japanifornia?), and is Latina!
Some fun facts:
As stated in the blurb, she is obsessed with The Eternal Kingdom. She has sketchbooks upon sketchbooks filled with the costume designs, the set, Janice Quatlane, etc. She even memorized all the songs.
She has an interest in Mezo-American-related archaeology, as well as the obligatory Azran. Davina was never too invested in Azran-related study until she found out about Sycamore, and then it spiraled out of control from there.
She got obsessed with the legal system for some reason. She knows tons of penal codes and general strange law knowledge off the top of her head now. She still seems pretty interested in a certain attorney and his prosecutor rival.
Tom roped her into fencing. She thinks it’s payback for making him learn all the Eternal Kingdom songs.
Davina was super scared of Layton (and Emmy, but less so) for a while, not exactly knowing why. She didn’t trust him and found him intimidating. She warmed up to him, eventually.
To be fair, she’s not really a social person— not as of late, at least. She’s good at talking to new people, she just has trouble finding enough confidence to approach. Getting Davina to trust you enough to start making meaningful conversation is another story.
Strange insults and threats are Davina calling card, so prepare to be told to jump off a microwave or whatever non-anachronistic equivalent to a microwave is.
Davina’s very good at slide puzzles but has no idea if that’s because she’s insanely perseverent or if it’s a genuine skill. To be fair, she never really solved puzzles before meeting Tom and had no idea what a hint coin was until meeting the professor.
She’s a living storage unit, thanks to the massive bag she carries everywhere. Davina clears it out occasionally, but it just gets filled back up again. She always has her current sketchbook, a folder of loose blank paper and sketches, her pencils and pen, a glasses cloth, a pocket dictionary, and a handkerchief.
Davina plays chess with Tom sometimes and isn’t very good at it. She “developed” a method of play she calls “Ammunition Chess.” Whenever she takes a piece, she will either forcefully knock it off the board or pick it up and chuck it at her opponent/spectators. It has gotten her in trouble multiple times, but she doesn’t seem to be stopping anytime soon.
Davina loves drawing portraits of her friends and people she meets and has a folder full of pages upon pages of them. She doesn’t seem to like to draw herself, though.
If Davina is in a car that isn’t going incredibly fast, has windows she can roll down, and at a level she can comfortably look out of, she will stick her head out. You cannot stop her; you can only advise her when it’s a good time to stick her head back in. Also, prepare to hear commentary about how pretty the landscape is if you’re going somewhere rural.

So uh, I've been thinking about a hypothetical Trucy Wright: Act Attorney and here is the very poorly written outline for it because yeah. No spoilers except the Apollo Trucy thing. Tw death, murder, blood and grieving so yeah.
Trucy's first case is literally her first ever case. This is a flashback case. We follow her as she wakes up, slightly stressed about today, Phoenix gives her cereal and a pep talk and a cryptic message. Trucy asks where Papa is, it is Miles, they are married. Phoenix is cryptic about that too. He stays behind as he "has to buy groceries" so Trucy heads into the office. Apollo greets her, it's clear they know they're siblings, and he hands her a case. Miles is prosecuting. She is fucking terrified. She goes to the crime scene, Gumshoe is the detective and he's educating his teenage sons, constant confusion of who's who, because they are twins and they look very like Gumshoe, it'll be kinda funny. Its a simple investigation. During the investigation, the player can check Trucy's profile and the profile system shows character's middle names now. We get some gems such as Klavier Hyacintha Gavin later on, the reasoning behind this is coz Trucy is nosy. The important one here is Trucy Mia Wright. She says something about how she chose her own middle name when Phoenix adopted her and she chose Mia after learning about her. Yada yada. Trucy wins the case. Edgeworth is very proud, Phoenix is in the gallery and there's a flash of him crying proud tears, Apollo hugs her afterwards, Athena congrats her.
Next case, flash forward three years later, we do not see Phoenix and nobody really mentions him. Thats because he's fucking dead but we don't know that yet. This case is a Fey case, we meet Maya who is married to Franziska and they're technically on honeymoon in Kurain and Pearl becomes the Maya to Trucy's Phoenix. Its another fey murder case. There are a few mentions of Trucy's admiration of Mia, mainly just a mirror of a few lines she's said and a conversation where her and Maya talk about her, Trucy says she would have loved to meet her and Maya explains how her spirit has been dormant for ages now and how she assumes she's moved on.
"If you want I can try and channel-"
"No no no no NO. Its ok!"
This is our first hint that Phoenix is no longer with us, but we don't know until later thats what she means. Sebastian is the prosecutor, the player finds out that Miles is taking a break from prosecuting work, Trucy already knew of course, and Sebastian is dubbed Chief until he comes back, Fran says
"It would've been me were I not on my literal honeymoon right now." We are not told why yet, but it is because of Phoenix. Kay Faraday is the detective, somebody murders someone and frames Maya, no-one is shocked by this. We also get an update on Iris, she's thriving. She wins yada yada.
Next case, a couple of months later, Trucy gets a call from a friend that the player can't identify at first. Its Katrielle Layton. She needs Trucy's legal knowledge because someone is sueing her detective agency because have you seen how they practice. This, of course, turns to murder and we get another surprise when we meet the prosecutor. Who probably has a licence to practise law in England? Simon Blackquill, he is British ok. Yeah, Trucy wins with Kat's help, we meet Ernest and Sherl and Alfendi and Flora if we have time. I miss them. Trucy and Kat have a conversation that cryptically addresses their fathers and their "whereabouts" and living up to their legacy. We see Trucy cry, but only a similar flash to AJ:AA and we do not know why. Yet.
Next case, flashback case. Trucy is the assistant on this case but we still play as her, even in the court sections since Phoenix is prepping her for the bar and getting her to give him the answers. The bar exam is only in three days. Klavier is prosecuting. The case somehow relates to Kristoph and there's the whole mirror dynamic thing of when Phoenix lost his badge. Kristoph is dead by now, but the whole thing is there was a plot inside prison to make Phoenix pay for putting a bunch of them in, Kristoph was the assumed ring leader until he died and the cops now dont know who's running it. Somebody (Godot? That would hurt big time) was their inside man, sent to figure that out, so when whoever it was turned up dead, the whole thing got exposed. We get a bit of a Mia moment in the trial where Trucy tells Phoenix to flip over the receipt (thats evidence for some reason). Phoenix says "I feel like that shouldn't be the second time someone has said that to me". The killer is found, by Phoenix, and put into isolation, as have most of the other participants. We then see Trucy get her badge. They have a conversation and Trucy says Phoenix basically forgot about it for a couple of months. The case closes with a foreboding "and I forgot about it too, until..."
Next case. Phoenix is fucking murdered. Trucy gets a phone call late at night, she hears laboured breathing on the other end and a "don't forget I love you" from Phoenix. Trucy pulls a simba and goes "dad? Dad?!!" And the line goes dead. The player is presented with a choice of who to call. They have two phone calls. Who they choose first makes no difference, but the second time they are forced to choose Ema who will trace Phoenix's phone call. They could call Apollo and he would comfort her, Miles would panic, Maya would say he was just messing around, Athena would sense her distress and say she's coming over etc. You could attempt to call Phoenix back but he would not answer and you would be allowed to call someone else. Ema then traces the phone call and we follow Trucy to the crime scene. We get a truly haunting cutscene where everything kinda goes blurry except Phoenix's face and the blood. Trucy doesn't cry. She stands there in shock. The WAA is there in various states of shock and upset. Return of grieving Apollo I guess. Miles turns up and the look on his face is haunting. Trucy and him make eye contact and they share the thought of something has to be done. And then. "The bar association took me off the case and Papa too, they said we were too close to it. As a result, we never found out who did it... Until now." And we see a determined Trucy face. We jump forward to where we last saw Trucy, she and Pearl are coming back from England and its a bit more cheery. Trucy sends Pearl on a train back to Kurain and heads on home. She enters the house and we see Miles pouring over Phoenix's case. He jumps up and runs towards her.
"Trucy! I think I have a lead, I-"
"Papa, you're tired, go to bed." (Or better dialogue along those lines)
Its clear he's been doing this sort of thing a lot.
"But I do! At least...I think I do..."
He trails off and rests his head in his hands.
"Do I? Or am I just a mess?"
Trucy gives him a sad smile.
"C'mon let's go to bed."
Miles returns the sad smile and fades out like all ace attorney characters do. The player is given the option to look around. There's probably some emotional dialogue and bits that give clues to how she and Miles have been fairing the past 3 years. Answer is, not very well. Examine the pile of papers on the table. Trucy will take a look and then realise her papa may have actually been onto something. Its a diagram of which prisoners knew each other, with an arrow from each leading to a defense attorney we have never met. Trucy is confused, but she calls for Miles anyway. He comes back downstairs and Trucy asks him about this lead he found.
"Well I realised all those prisoners would know this defense attorney (insert name?)"
"Why? And why would they be suspicious?'
"They (pronouns?) Were always the defense attorney who would take on the cases of those Wright had already accused. They gained a reputation of being the doomed defense attorney."
"So... They knew all the prisoners in the plot and they had a grudge against daddy... Papa I think you're onto something!"
And the case continues, since we already know who's been accused, it plays out more like an investigations game, Trucy has to prove it, with Miles' help of course, literally every other character we know and love plays a part in making sure this guy gets a guilty verdict. There is still a courtroom bit and a moment when all is looking dark, Trucy literally has a full on breakdown as the Judge threatens to remove her from the case again. Miles is by her side, they're both technically prosecution here i guess. Miles, however, is too deep in his own mental breakdown to help. Everyone else is in the gallery besides Pearl. Pearl channels Phoenix as a last hope sort of thing. Phoenix comforts her and tells her to keep fighting, he touches her badge and probably says some sort of bullshit about it. The Judge is about to bang the gavel when Trucy and Phoenix object at the same time. Miles looks up and realises whats going on and he objects too, a little later. The battle goes on until it finishes and the other attorney has a breakdown that steals little bits from every other murderer Phoenix has put behind bars. This is the one time seeing the word guilty on your screen feels good. There's a whole heartwarming celebration at the end, Phoenix sticks around for a little bit and everyone gets a bit of closure. Its assumed he's gone since Pearl passes out and Trucy dips out for a sec. She's away from the festivities, staring at the badge in her hand and we see someone coming up behind her. Maya is channelling Phoenix now. He gives Trucy a hug and utters the words "the only time a lawyer can cry is when its all over and, Trucy darling, my light, its over." Echoing both Diego and Mia.
And the screen fades to black with a final hug between father and daughter.
:)

heres my thoughts on aa5
Introduction
Firstly, this post contains heavy spoilers for AA5 (and AA4 because I can’t help talking about that game JSDGHSDJ). I talk about culprits, I talk about backstories, I talk about major plot twists. If you’re planning on playing this game spoiler-free, don’t read this. If you haven’t decided whether or not you want to play this game, I would advise against it- the gameplay is insanely boring and the story is told in a way that’s about as compelling as a wiki page. In fact, just read the wiki if you’re interested! This game isn’t worth playing, and it’s definitely not worth paying for if you have no way of pirating it.
I also want to add that these are ultimately my own opinions and interpretations. If you liked something that I didn’t or vice versa, that’s like fine. I’m not really trying to call anybody wrong for their own interpretations by typing this. This also isn’t a callout post for AA5! I’m just a hater!
And fair warning, this post isn’t well-organized at all! I’d rather play through AA6 and make a better post about both the 3DS mainline games than put a lot of effort into a post about just one of them. The like Correct Grammar appearance is just to make it easier for me to read because it’s a lot sdjhgfdhksf. In this post I try to organize my complaints by the order of when they come up in the game, which is a little complicated when multiple things I wanna complain about are happening at the same time, so bear with me.
Episode 1
I’ll start with the easiest complaint: it looks bad. Not JUST in the sense that it has an ugly artstyle, but in the sense that it just doesn’t feel like a real Ace Attorney game. Whenever they try to recreate a sprite from the past games, it looks fake if not impossibly ugly, and whenever they try to do their own thing, it just looks generic and empty. Note that this applies to the music and voices just as much as it applies to the sprites! I don’t think it’s just because the sprites went from 2D to 3D, by the way. The Professor Layton crossover came out a couple months before AA5 did, and although the 3D sprites in that game aren’t perfect, they still feel more like Ace Attorney sprites than anything from this game IMO. Honestly, though, AA5’s appearance is super low on my list of problems with this game. It’s an issue that could easily be fixed without changing the content of the game itself- something you can’t say for the deeper problems.
The beginning of the actual game is very jarring. One of the first things you see is Apollo covered in bandages and wearing a weird blue jacket over his shoulders. While you’re still confused about that, he collapses in front of you. While Athena is going through the first trial, she gets stuck and starts having flashbacks of her as a little girl being scared and covered in blood. In the middle of the trial, Apollo gets ATTACKED and sent to the hospital. Most shockingly of all, a woman has a huge crush on Apollo? It’s shock after shock, question after question, and the game doesn’t give you any answers until it’s almost over. I can’t tell if this is the game’s way of trying to capture the player’s attention or if it’s the game trying to make the cases tie into each other, like many notably good games in the series do, while completely misunderstanding how connecting cases works. Either way, it makes for bad storytelling.
Aside from all the weird shock value shit going on, this trial still has a lot of issues. The player starts out as Athena, taking over the trial for Apollo because he’s too busy falling over and being edgy. Because Athena doesn’t have a co-counsel, the Judge and the prosecutor (a Payne) have to play the role of Tutorial for the player. The player’s opponent who they’re supposed to hate (and who hates the protagonist!) is helping them just because that’s what the gameplay requires at that point. It’s stupid and could’ve been easily fixed by having a more experienced lawyer be Athena’s co-counsel, like Phoenix. Just to name an example. Who knows, though, maybe the game just like forgot he exists like mistakes happen it’s- nope Athena gets stuck like 10 minutes into the trial and Phoenix has to come Save This Poor Damsel by taking over the tutorial case entirely.
On top of Athena getting booted from leading her own fucken case (that she did take from Apollo yeah but whatever it was girlboss at the time), she takes the role of Tutorial for the player (who is now Phoenix). This is marginally better than having your actual opponent be the tutorial, but not by much? Athena is literally an 18yo rookie lawyer. Not that she’s incompetent, but why exactly is she teaching Phoenix how to be a lawyer when he’s like twice her age and has years of experience?* Wouldn’t it have made more sense for Phoenix to be the co-counsel instead? The only reason I can possibly think of as to why the writers chose to write this the way they did is that they wanted to establish as quickly as possible that “hey the REAL main character is back in his normal protagonist spot we promise he’s normal now. please buy game.” This effort to appeal to trilogy fans at all costs does come back later, so keep it in mind.
*Note: I imagine some people excuse this because Phoenix had been disbarred for seven years, so it’s not crazy to imagine that he’s just rusty and needs refreshers. However. Those who played AA4 should remember that although Phoenix hasn’t been an official defense attorney for seven years, he’s perfectly able to lead several discussions during the trial in the first episode (he even takes the role of co-counsel in the second half of this trial, because AA4 is a good game). Additionally, he literally organizes a murder trial to test out an experimental trial system that HE helped design. Badge or not, he’s obviously still involved with the legal world before the events of AA5- no need for basic refreshers.
There’s one small part of this case that I believe acts as a sign of a much clearer and bigger problem with AA5. A piece of evidence for this trial is a bomb disguised as a mascot for a group of people critical of the court system. While discussing the defendant’s motive, the game asserts that because the defendant has had bad experiences with the legal system, she must be critical of it (she really isn’t, fyi) which must mean that she’s a literal bomber and murderer. The second half of that assumption is never really questioned, by the way! Literally all six of the games that came before this one were openly critical of the court system. Why is this game suddenly changing it up so quickly? I will admit that at this point I am maybe looking a little too deeply into one thing, but this does become a major theme in the game, so I think it’s worth bringing up.
Another bigger issue with this game that we can see early on- a basic piece of advice for writing stories is “show, don’t tell.” This game crumples that advice up and throws it out the window right off the bat. I could point out every single time that this game just tells you something and prays that you take it at face value instead of actually thinking about the content of the story. That would take ages though and I have other things I wanna write 6k words about, so I’ll only be mentioning the most notable examples. Onto the actual point: the game flat out tells you that Athena represses her feelings from the start. Several characters make clear remarks about it that go nowhere. These lines seem to solely exist to convince you that Athena is a super interesting character without the game having to actually write Athena as a super interesting character (I say “seem to” because these lines end up having a much more stupid purpose, but we’ll get to that in the next episode). Let’s compare and contrast this with AA4 my beloved AA4- with Trucy, in particular. Trucy, like Athena, is a female character with a troubled childhood who puts on a cheery facade so that others don’t worry about her. This character trait of Trucy’s is made clear in AA4- not by having Apollo or Phoenix nonchalantly observe and remark on it, but by dropping hints every now and then of it and ultimately only Really revealing it during the finale case. The player feels for Trucy and wants her to open up and grow for her own sake. Athena’s internal struggles, on the other hand, aren’t designed for the audience to really think about. They’re just a passing observation that later becomes an excuse for plot holes and eventually becomes a part of the game’s shitty ending. Let’s put that aside for now, though, because we still need to wrap this case up.
The case ends with a cutscene where Apollo suddenly takes a leave of absence, and Athena later internally literally asks “Why is Apollo shutting us out? :(“ This exemplifies TWO points that I already brought up. Firstly, this game is presenting something shocking out of nowhere and without explanation. Secondly, this game is TELLING the player what they should be wondering, instead of just writing a story that makes them wonder that question on their own. Also, Trucy literally doesn’t say anything as Apollo leaves in front of her but it’s not like she has any attachment to Apollo or any already established abandonment issues or like any personality at all /s /s /s /attack /kill
Episode 2
The culprit isn’t actually introduced until a lot later in the episode, but he’s in the opening cutscene and comes with a glaring issue so I’m bringing it up first: this character is written with a lot of offensive undertones? To summarize, the killer is a big man obsessed with wearing makeup and perfume, and he constantly gets called a freak for this by the main characters. I don’t remember him ever being referred to as a woman by himself or others, so I’m reluctant to call it transmisogyny (I’m TME, so it’s not my place to say anyways). I’m not really sure what else to call it, though, other than like disgustingly bigoted. Unlike the other stuff I talk about in this post, this issue does come up in previous games, specifically AA3 with Jean Armstrong. So this isn’t really an issue that AA5 created so much as it revived. It’s still shitty!- I’m just not trying to argue that the other games are better on this front. Lastly, transphobic undertones do come into play again in Episode 3, and I think the writing in this case should definitely be considered while analyzing the next one.
I want to introduce this next complaint by bringing up something I actually enjoyed! Jinxie Tenma is one of 2.1 characters from this game that I found myself liking despite everything. Although she does fall into the dead parent(s) trope that the series is addicted to, the trope actually serves a purpose for her character beyond just making the player feel sad- it’s used to further develop Jinxie’s relationship with her surviving parent. Jinxie definitely isn’t one of the more well-written characters in the series, but for a one-off character in a game as bad as this? Jinxie is surprisingly decent! Congrats 👏👏👏👏👏 I still have my complaints to get to, though. Jinxie is introduced in Apollo’s one (1) actual conversation with Trucy throughout the entire game. Trucy introduces Jinxie as a close friend of hers, but they hardly interact at all. This character’s introduction itself exposes multiple major flaws of AA5 (that have already come up!): Trucy’s character is ignored in favor of using her as a plot device, and this game only tells the player about the characters instead of actually writing them. This game tells the player that Trucy and Jinxie are best friends, and the player is left with a choice: take the game’s word and have a fun time imagining how good these things (that aren’t actually in the game) are, or refuse the game’s word until you see actual content supporting it and have an awful time thinking about how good these things that aren’t actually in the game could’ve been.
Let’s talk about another character introduced in this episode: Simon Blackquill! Athena and Simon have a dynamic that’s clearly meant to parallel the dynamic between Phoenix and Edgeworth. Athena’s entire motivation to become a defense attorney is to ~save Simon~ from a false conviction for murder. This motivation isn’t fully revealed until the last episode of the game, much like Phoenix’s motivations. Unlike Phoenix’s motivations, though, it makes no sense for the game to keep this motivation from the player’s knowledge for such a long time. In AA1, Phoenix is largely motivated by Edgeworth, but he doesn’t actually know what’s wrong with Edgeworth or why he changed so drastically. All Phoenix knows is that Edgeworth has changed, and that’s enough for him to want to seek Edgeworth out- if not to save him, at least to find some answers. Phoenix is left just about as in the dark as the player; the only information he withholds is about the class trial from ages ago. Athena, on the other hand, literally knows exactly what happened to Simon. Athena’s motivations couldn’t be clearer to herself- but the game doesn’t want them to be clear to the player yet! So the game takes Athena’s “repression” (you know, the thing the game conveniently told you about in the last episode) and uses it as a way to cover the story’s plot holes. Athena doesn’t mention or even think about her strongest motivations even when she’s in front of the person she wants to save because “she’s just THAT repressed!” This game constantly withholds important information from the player for no reason other than that it’s just what their narrative happens to need at the time. It’s just lazy writing.
My last remark about this case is something that’s been an issue for the entire game so far: it’s hardly a game at all. The gameplay of Ace Attorney largely revolves around having the player use logic and their own thoughts to point out contradictions, uncover new testimony, and investigate crime scenes. When players would rather focus on the story and avoid the gameplay, they usually use a walkthrough that gives them directions in a straightforward way- no racking your brain trying to find any faults in some testimony, no wandering around crime scenes praying that new dialogue appears, just a good story. This way of playing the game is perfectly fine! The story is honestly the stronger part of most of the games, and people not bothering with the gameplay is their own choice. They’re still able to enjoy the game through the story, and isn’t that the purpose of games? To be enjoyed?
I’ll get to my point: this game is extremely hard to actually play. It’s easy to read, it’s easy to press the right buttons, but to actually use your own logic and thoughts? Borderline impossible. When the game doesn’t give away the answer right after asking, it’s because it gave the answer away before asking. The “hints” the game gives you are so obvious and numerous that the only way you could have a chance of figuring anything out for yourself is if you never pay attention to the dialogue. I will say- this was nearly an improvement. You can tell the people who made this game wanted it to be more accessible to people who didn’t care as much about the gameplay. A mechanic of sorts is introduced in this game that acts as a to-do list for investigations, so that the player doesn’t end up wandering around for an hour because they forgot to present a piece of evidence or talk to a certain witness or whatever. Additionally, if a player is struggling to find holes in a testimony, the game offers a helpful nudge to the player that drastically narrows down their possible moves without giving away any answers. Both of these mechanics are entirely optional, too! While the game does let you know that these mechanics exist in fairly natural ways, it never actually makes the player look at them more than once. These mechanics allow for players to focus more on the story if they want, while theoretically still providing them with a challenging mystery to solve. As we already know, though, these mechanics are completely useless because the game forcibly gives you the answers anyways. The protagonist you play as almost always announces where to go next in the investigations and what evidence to use in the trials. While I was still at this point in the game, I kind of just passed it off as the earlier cases going easier on the player to warm them up. The game never stops giving you the answers, though. This is a problem that persists throughout the whole game. When I started this game, I already knew I wasn’t going to enjoy the story, but I figured that at the very least I would be able to enjoy playing new cases and solving new mysteries! So, in a way, this boring gameplay was almost more disappointing than the dogshit story itself.
Episode 3
This episode contains a lot of firsts for the game. For one, this is the first full case that Athena leads! It’s also the last episode where the player even plays as Athena! This is also the first case that doesn’t show you the culprit in the opening cutscene. What the game does instead is immediately introduce a Big Scary Man with an unreasonably creepy smile and Corrupt Ways. Side note: literally every culprit in this game is a big/rude/otherwise intimidating man. This is the first game in the series to not have a single female culprit! I don’t think it’s actually that big of an issue, but it’s still overly predictable and underwhelming.
I might as well talk about the culprit’s ~corrupt ways~ now, even though it only gets worse. The culprit is a professor at a legal academy whose main philosophy is “the ends justify the means.” The player knows that this is his main philosophy because he repeats this exact phrase fucking 50 times in every scene he appears in, and the player knows that this is a Corrupt philosophy because every single time he mentions it a main character says something like “wow... this is truly the Dark Age of the Law...” (which, by the way, is another phrase that gets grossly overused in the game despite meaning virtually nothing). The closest the game gets to forming any actual political commentary is when this professor says he encourages his students to use false evidence to “win” trials (as opposed to the other professor in the case who discourages this), and the game tells you that this (among exactly two other things) is the source of the “dark age of the law.” The source isn’t corruption or a broken system, it’s one teacher’s bad grade policy. The game never really challenges the player’s beliefs or teaches them anything- it just flat out tells you the moral it’s trying to get across and expects you to already agree. And this problem with the writing only gets way worse in the next case!
I mentioned early in the Episode 2 section that this episode contains some transphobic undertones. To Summarize: Robin Newman is a character introduced as a guy obsessed with masculinity who later gets proven in court to be a girl because she likes wearing “girly clothes.” While everybody is still under the impression that Robin is a guy that just “screams testosterone” (actual fucking line in the game btw), they treat the fact that he wore feminine clothes as embarrassing and weird. Robin ultimately proves that she’s a girl by taking off a bracer that was flattening her chest (yes, this game does the thing where a character’s “true gender” is revealed by awkwardly emphasizing specific body parts, it’s uncomfortable as hell) and revealing that she was raised as a boy by her parents despite really being a girl.
I’ve seen some people try to argue that the writers intended for Robin to be trans, but as much as I want to believe it I just don’t think it’s the case. Robin doesn’t identify as a man at all- she expresses nothing but relief upon being proven to be a woman and says that she hated having to act like a man- so she’s definitely not a trans man. Although there isn’t exactly textual evidence against Robin being a trans woman, the game (and series) has already established what it thinks of trans women and AMAB people who don’t perform masculinity correctly, and it’s not good! Robin is treated with nothing but respect after her reveal, and (unfortunately!) I just don’t believe that this game would afford her that respect if they intended for her to be a trans woman. I want to add that it’s really not unheard of for cis authors to write stories where a cis character is forcibly raised as the opposite gender (YTTD does this, for example) so it’s not hard to believe that this is what the authors were doing for Robin. Lastly, I want to make it clear that I’m not trying to argue against trans headcanons for Robin. If I cared about Robin, I’d headcanon her as trans myself- it’s hard not to. All I’m trying to argue is that we shouldn’t give the writers any credit for writing a trans character because they don’t deserve that credit after writing such a cisnormative gender-role-addicted shit game.
Anyways, this case ends with Athena getting stuck at the end and needing somebody to come Save This Poor Damsel AGAIN. It’s definitely less shoehorned in than the first time it happened, but it’s still just annoying that it keeps happening.
Episode 4 & 5
You might be wondering why I put Episode 4 and 5 together. I did this because they’re the same fucking story split into two parts because ????? I don’t KNOW. There’s so many baffling writing decisions in this game like . this might as well be happening. who care. By the way, if my frustration seems to show more in this part of the post, it’s because this part of the game is just. such a mess.
The case opens right before the trial (that’s right, no investigation) with Apollo and the most forgettable defendant in the game being sad about Clay’s death. Do we know who Clay is? Do we know anything about the defendant? Or the case at all? Nope! The entire set-up for this episode is in one conversation where Apollo and some guy tell the player that Clay was a good guy and that it’s sad that he was killed. Once again, this game is telling you things instead of showing you, and it’s even doing that incredibly poorly! This game makes it borderline impossible to care about Clay, while also making it borderline impossible to care about the episode if the player doesn’t care about Clay. Scenes that are meant to be depressing are boring, scenes that are meant to be uplifting are confusing, and scenes that are meant to be deep are just frustrating. The fact that this episode opens right into the trial without any preceding investigation is fucking insane to me. Not only is it completely unprecedented for a multi-day trial, but a pre-murder investigation could’ve done wonders for developing Clay and the defendant! I can’t wrap my head around this shit! It’s not even lazy writing at this point- there’s no writing at all!!
Remember earlier when I said that I liked 2.1 characters in this game? Clay is .1 of those characters- no thanks to anything in the game! Despite being such a focal point in these episodes, Clay is hardly a character at all. He has like three lines total in a short flashback, and his only “character” traits are 1) Good Guy and 2) Dead Mom. Remember how the dead mom trope actually managed to serve a reasonable purpose in Jinxie’s character? All the dead mom trope does for Clay is give a reason for him and Apollo to be friends, because apparently there’s just nothing else that could’ve connected them together. It’s just sad backstory for sad backstory’s sake. I really can’t even point out anything well-written with Clay, embarrassingly enough! The only reasons I like him are because he has a nice design and a connection to a character I liked in a previous game. This game SUCKS
Speaking of sad backstory, by the way, they literally give Apollo’s CATCHPHRASE a sad backstory. Apollo apparently says his “I’m fine” thing because he and his now dead bestie used to say it together to cope with like not having parents. It’s stupid and unnecessary and I hate it basically.
Anyways Episode 4 ends with Athena being accused of killing Clay and becoming the defendant. Because this game was in need of more Damsel in Distress Athena. This accusation comes about because the detective in this game, Bobby Fulbright (who I haven’t mentioned up until now because he’s so fucken unremarkable), finds a piece of evidence with Athena’s fingerprints in the victim’s blood. For the majority of the rest of the game, this is the only piece of evidence that the player is given against Athena. However, multiple convincing pieces of evidence against Athena already exist in the story at this point. Athena and Apollo are even fully aware of this evidence before Episode 4 even starts, but the game withholds these from the player until much later. The game does this because it doesn’t want you to actually suspect Athena- not for even a moment! They want it to seem like it would be completely insane to even think about doubting Athena, and they do this by depicting Apollo as ~blinded by grief~ and irrational for daring to suspect his co-worker. Apollo, of all characters! Apollo, the character that had to prove his literal boss guilty of murder. TWICE. This game wants you to think it would be crazy for Apollo to do something that he literally justifiably did in the game that came directly before this one!
This brings us to the final character in this game that I liked: Aura Blackquill. Basically, her thing is that she’s mean and evil but she does it out of love for her brother. If there was any nuance in this game, Aura could’ve been like, a really good character. Sadly, though, she’s just not given much depth, and this game stumbles over its own themes too much for Aura to really challenge any of it. Also, fun fact! Aura was initially conceptualized as a character that would “seduce” Apollo to the Dark Side. This didn’t quite make it into the game, but it’s official information that exists and it makes me want to eat glass.
Aura is still used to show how ~warped~ Apollo is becoming when they’re both shown bonding (platonically, thank god) over their dead besties and investigating Clay’s murder without the Wright gang. It’s been made obvious to the player at this point in the game that Aura has an irrational hatred of Athena, too. By associating Apollo with this character, the game is further depicting Apollo’s doubts as comparable to irrational hatred. It’s frustrating to me because it could’ve been really interesting for the game to set up legitimate tension between two protagonists and take both sides seriously, forcing the player to question their own beliefs and the characters that they themselves played as! Instead, the game refuses to let the player take Apollo seriously and just assumes the player couldn’t possibly want an actual reason to believe in Athena’s innocence beyond “only Scary Rude Men are murderers and Athena’s just a sensitive innocent damsel <3” Not only is this writing throwing away a lot of potential, it’s shooting itself in the foot by not letting the game make any fucking sense!
The rest of this episode is honestly so bad that there’s really no way to neatly summarize its issues in a few paragraphs, so I’m going to walk you through the story beat by beat for a bit. In Episode 5 (which starts after Athena becomes the defendant), Phoenix is the protagonist. Athena is too busy being accused of murder, and Apollo is too busy being edgy, so who’s left for co-counsel? Trucy is the only character left at the Wright Anything Agency, so the game is forced to include her in the story. Finally. She joins Phoenix right before the scene with Apollo and Aura, and then . she leaves . right after that scene. So Phoenix is once again left without a co-counsel, and it doesn’t seem like there’s any characters left to fill that role... But Wait! Who Is That At The Door! Why, It’s Pearl! From The Ace Attorney Trilogy! Thank the fucken stars /s
Pearl is my favorite trilogy character. I really could go on and on about how badly AA5 fucked up with this (they didn’t change a thing about Pearl’s appearance or character despite her being twice as old as before) but at the end of the day it’s just more of this game doing a bad job at sucking the trilogy’s dick.
So, Phoenix and Pearl head back to where Trucy disappeared only to find out that she’s been kidnapped. Remember in AA4 when the game pretended that Trucy got kidnapped, only to reveal about a minute later that it was just a trick Trucy pulled to buy Apollo some time. Because the AA4 writers knew it would be fucking ridiculous for the series to pull that plot twist again out of nowhere. Look at how far we’ve come since then. Anyways. The kidnapper’s one demand is that Phoenix reinvestigates and holds a trial for a past case that Just So Happens to be connected to the current case. Pretty much every finale case in the series involves taking a look at an unsolved past case, but they usually give the player an actual reason to be interested in or care about said case. The only reason that this game can think of to get you to focus on this past case is Trucy’s life being in danger. The motivations and plot twists are so shoehorned in that it’s hard to give a shit about it.
So the kidnapper wants a trial, but who’s prosecuting? The main prosecutor, Simon, is the one that the past case declared guilty, and nobody gives a shit about Klavier, so it doesn’t seem like there’s any characters left that could fill that role... But Wait! Who Is That At The Door! Why, It’s Edgeworth! From The Ace Attorney Trilogy! I’m So Mad! Unlike Pearl, the game does change Edgeworth up quite a bit. He’s even wearing glasses now, to show that time has passed :~) His character changed too! Remember how, after the events of Turnabout Goodbyes, Edgeworth was all about investigating the truth and protecting innocent people from false accusations and struggling against his role as a prosecutor, literally getting his badge taken away at one point because he couldn’t bring himself to let an amnesiac teenager get taken advantage of and be accused of a murder she clearly didn’t do? Well. He’s changed . :~)
On top of removing any struggle Edgeworth had with his job, AA5 actually makes Edgeworth the chief prosecutor. I would be more upset with this writing decision if it wasn’t obviously just there to cover up plot holes. For example, why is Simon, a convicted murderer, being allowed to prosecute so many cases? Don’t worry about it, Edgeworth gave him Special Permission 👍 Also, why did Phoenix get his badge back so quickly? Don’t worry about it, Edgeworth used his Influences to get it back easily 👍
So, once the trial starts, Edgeworth takes advantage of a teenager’s amnesia to accuse her of a murder she clearly didn’t do. :~)
(Brief aside, this trial takes place in a courtroom that was bombed and is crumbling to pieces. The game literally has a character tell you “This courtroom is symbolic of The Dark Age Of The Law” like fucking VERBATIM. I couldn’t make this shit up if I wanted to.)
Obviously, Phoenix is eventually able to prove Athena’s innocence of the past murder. At this point in the case, Edgeworth tells the player about the meaning of a trial. The defense attorney is meant to do whatever they can to defend their client, while the prosecution is meant to do whatever they can to prove the defendant guilty. It’s through this adversarial system that the truth is most efficiently uncovered. I cannot stress this enough: the game is trying to argue that this is the way trials should work. It’s completely antithetical to all the games that came before it! Edgeworth and Klavier were both considered to be two of the few good people that were prosecutors because they were both bad at being prosecutors. They’re good people because they don’t let the goal of their job (to get the defendant declared guilty) get in the way of their personal goals (to uncover the truth even if it involves directly helping the defense). AA5 completely stumbles over the series’ past themes and characterizations to reach the conclusion that “Bad Trial Systems Don’t Result In False Convictions, Bad People Do!” AA5 tries to convince the player that the status quo is just fine. They don’t even keep what little reforms they made to the court system in AA4- that jurist system isn’t even mentioned in this game.
You might be wondering, though. If the game never really questions its own court system, then what was all the fuss about the “Dark Age of the Law”? Well. The game outright tells you that the “dark age of the law” started with Phoenix’s disbarment and Simon’s conviction. Before that the law was Just Fine 👍 and now that Phoenix has his badge back and Simon’s been proven innocent, the law is Just Fine once again 👍 . I don’t feel the need to explain why the court system was clearly not fine in the trilogy, or why corruption and imbalance of power didn’t explode in the courtrooms over two (2) fucking cases. This game’s attempts at political themes are a fucking joke at best.
Back to the trial- we’ve been able to prove that Athena and Simon are innocent of the past murder, but who WAS the culprit? And what about the current case with Clay? It’s only at this point in the story that the player FINALLY learns about all the evidence against Athena in the trial for Clay’s murder- far too late for the player to be able to take it seriously. It’s also at this point where Apollo reveals that he doesn’t really suspect Athena, he was just doubting her because he trusts her so much :) isn’t that so sweet. Seriously, Apollo is the character with the BIGGEST justification to doubt someone he works with and the game not only treats it like a completely irrational idea but tells you that it was fake the entire time! What the fuck!
After a really long battle in court, it’s revealed that Bobby Fulbright (remember him?) was behind the current case AND the past case, AND that he’s an international shapeshifting superspy with literally (like literally literally) no actual character. This is never foreshadowed or hinted at through the entire game! It’s pulled out of fucking nowhere because this game just needed one more Shocking plot twist. It’s stupid and meaningless and he gets caught because he sucks at blowing up rocks and Athena has a cool earring.
One remark about the ending: when Trucy gets released from being kidnapped, about two characters go “wow Trucy I’m glad you’re safe :)” and Trucy goes “I’m just fine ^_^ I even did magic tricks for the other hostages” because magic tricks are the only character trait that Trucy is allowed to have in this game. The kidnapping is completely brushed off like it wasn’t important in the first place because guess what? It WASN’T important. It was just a stupid plot device to get the story going where it needed to in a shocking way, like everything else in this stupid game.
Final Thoughts
My review of the game is that it suck left nut. Like I said earlier, just read the wiki if you’re interested in it, because the game won’t offer you a better experience. Its gameplay is boring, the characters are disappointingly flat, the story is empty, the plot twists are just there to shock the player and cover up plot holes, and it completely tramples on what makes the past games so good. A lot of people say to play this game for Athena and Simon, but IMO all they really do for the majority of the game is serve as an example of just how bad this game is. AA5 isn’t worth playing!
I rate this game 7.2/7.5 Imagine Party Babyz.

Y don't u care abt UsUm?
// Short answer; because I feel Nintendo doesn’t either.
And now a long answer because I’ve been sitting on this rant for ages and I bothered the Discord server enough with it. I want to put foward first that the opinions expressed here are my own. I am a big fan of Nintendo and this is something that bothers me. This is no way shape or form an attack to people who love these games to bits. This is also not meant to hate on a franchise or a company. The purpose of this rant is to put some arguments behind my statements.
Sources are linked in the text. I used Nintendo but I always meant everyone involved in the making of these games.
The reason I feel comfortable sharing it now is because people have their, rightful, concerns about the upcoming games; Pokemon Sword and Pokemon Shield, releasing in a few short weeks for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s newest and most succesful baby.
Why doesn’t Nintendo care about Pokemon, according to you?
First we need to ask ourselves;
How much does Nintendo make on Pokemon?
While I do think they care in a sense the numbers won’t lie. Pokemon has made around $95 billion US dollars since the franchise came to life in 1996. To put it in a way bigger number; they make about 4130434782.61 US dollars PER YEAR on Pokemon. (This is my own math, I do not know the exact numbers per year. I divded their total by the amount of years Pokemon has been alive.) That’s a lot of money and it’s with right the most financially succesful franchise to date.
Only a part is made by the video games $17.138 billion. It’s merchandise makes more; $64.1 billion.
I could not find a reliable source on how much it takes to make a Pokemon game in monetary value.  What I could find however is that Pokemon is making less and less per game they release. Without counting Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Sun and Moon made LESS than X and Y.
The only main series game that made less than Sun and Moon (again not counting UsUm) was Black/White.
Nintendo knows people will buy their games anyway;
Dropping sales or no, Pokemon still manages to fatten the piggy bank over at Nintendo because people will buy it anyway. The Pokemon craze of the 90′s should tell you that. People would buy it if it had Pokemon on it. Those people are now in an age group that has money to spend, hell some even have kids. So Nintendo is smart and releases commercials like this one or this one.  This marketing is beautiful (and no, not only Nintendo knows how to do this) because they play on your feelings. Who didn’ make a friend because you both liked Pokemon? And if you grew up with Pokemon like the person in the second commercial the whole feeling and setting is famillair to you, hell they could’ve casted you and it would’ve make sense.  They compare the whole bleakness of adult life, having to work to pay the bills, having less time for video games, to that warm familliar feeling of coming home and playing Pokemon. They feed on your nostalgia; your desire to relive those moments or if you have kids, to share the feeling those games gave you with your off spring. Or your younger siblings or other family memmbers.  I catch myself doing it! When a young one comes up to me, or I see a kid play the game on the bus I get that familiar feeling of ‘Hey I used to do that!’ It’s smart and it’s a thing Disney is good at too. It zooms in on what was precious to you and now resells that feeling to you.
“Hey buy our game to feel something again. The world sucks anyway but Bulbasaur is still cute!” This isn’t a bad thing! Nintendo is a company and at the end of the day they need to make money. That is fair and I am in no way bagging on them over that. But it’s my belief that Nintendo keeps making money on the Pokemon games this way. Which leads me to my next point;
The Pokemon games come across as lazy.
Again, opinion but it feels like that. Which is also why I don’t care for UsUm; it’s lazy.
I truly believe Pokemon has some decent writers who don’t get their chance to shine. The beginnings of great stories and characters are there but it feels unfinished. Like someone bought the ingredients to a delicious dish but forgot to make them. Over the years Pokemon has a colorful bunch of characters, and the ones that stand out the most are the baddies. They usually get the coolest designs, the sickest themes, one way or another they are present in the climax but again. It’s lazy. How many of them pretend to be good or have a high moral standing and then turn out to be absolute dickbags? Almost all of them. Then they have characters (Ghetsis, Lusamine and Faba come to mind first) do something horrible (abuse of minors and playing God) and they get away with it what is basically a slap on the wrist.
And after you beat them… for me the story stops. Yes you can go and beat some very powerful trainers and claim your title as whatever the thing in this game is and yes often that unlocks some post credit content but it’s bare. The big threat is gone.
“But,” I hear you say “It’s a DS/3DS game. There is only so much you can do.” Disagree. Phoenix Wright, Ghost Trick, Professor Layton and The Legend of Zelda OoT 3DS and Majora’s Mask all released on the same consoles and have a much richer story and even more characters. All games keep their pacing and the story really feels like it ends when the credits role.
Then there is the overal quality. The main characters in Sun/Moon looks like someone forgot to progamme their soul in: /Screenshot take from THIS video/
Tumblr media
I, again, easily could compare this other games who have much more expressions but let’s take one of Nintendo’s own;
Tumblr media
There is so much more emotion in the Legend of Zelda one.  It released a few years earlier than Pokemon Sun/Moon too.
Second the frame rate drops like a hat. While some framerate drop is expected this much is a little too glaring to ignore.  To compare it to BoTW or Red Dead Redemption on the PS4, who both also have some frame rate issues at times it only happens in certain locations, usually a spot with lots of effects of NPCs. In my opinion, Pokemon does not have the luxery of that excuse. It would random drop in almost every location i was in.
The story
Every Pokemon has a story and I get that it’s basic. It’s a game for all ages after all. I get it won’t have a deep story like other games have. The basic gist of the game is to still enjoy catching all these mon’s with occasional story woven into it. But here is the thing that irks me; The little sneak peaks of story that we do get.. it’s good. It’s just so unfinished. It’s like there is a constant battle in the developers room betweeing writing a deep and interesting story (I’m not counting Pokemon Lore, just the story given in a game) and focussing on just the gameplay. There are many examples of rich story games with little gameplay (Grim Fandango, The Walking Dead, Almost every Visual Novel ever, Detroit; Become Human, just to name a few.) There are games with lots of gameplay and little story (Mobile games for example) and there are games that mix story and gameplay perfectly (Red Dead Redemption, Left 4 Dead 2, Persona 5 to name just a FEW examples)
I feel Pokeon TRIES to be all three of these styles of games but ends up failing at everything.
Storywise they lured peopel in with Team Rainbow Rocket, like mentioned before this is for most people the reason they get drawn in; seeing their old baddies return and getting to interact with them again. It’s the same reason for me. But it feels unpolished, same with The Ultra Recon Squad. They seem like GREAT characters but again, so little is done with them that I feel there could be so much more.
Don’t change a winning team.
Pokemon has been selling the same game to us for years. Again, I don’t blame them. Why bother. People like it, why change it? They try new gimmicks now and again and I respect them for trying. I personally like the Let’s Go Eevee/Pikachu versions. While they were FAR from perfect I can at least applaud them for doing something new and interesting. While at the same time trying to lure people who only played the mobile app into the main series by remake the first game all over again. Again, I understand. I would too if I were them.
But with Sword and Shield they are taking something away; Pokemon. And with that the whole thing comes undone. This is supposed to be THE Pokemon game, the big one, the game that will release on The Switch; home of BoTw and Mario Odyessy but also the upcoming Witcher 3, Skyrim. Games that are all much bigger than Pokemon and yet they took a vital part out of it.
The video is deleted now and I won’t link to the Chinese Bootleg game as it does steal user data, but the whole issue was the animations.  The animations in the bootleg were GOOD. And if we remember the amount of Pokemon makes per year they can afford themselves a team of good animators. This isn’t some indie studio who employs 20 people and have to live of Kickstarter donations, this is GAME FREAK, this is NINTENDO. And it’s not like they can’t, please remember Pokemon Stadium.  Look at the animation on that. Now remember that Legend of Zelda, Ocarina of Time, ALSO came out for the Nintendo 64 and got a beautiful update on the 3DS. If they can do that, surely they can port the animations.
And yes, I’m hearing you. You say that there are a lot of Pokemon.. but they’re taking a lot of them out of Sword and Shield. So there is no excuse for the battles to look like this. And remember this is the same console that has BoTW, one of the most applauded games in recent gaming history. A game with tons of content, tons of NPCs, tons of Items and has almost none of the issues Pokemon has.
I don’t care about USUM because it’s a lazy cash grab that adds nothing new to the table except some side story that doesn’t do anything to the main story. Play UsuM, Play SuMo, you’re basically getting the same game. Nintendo is smart and tries to sell you the same game twice due to a Pokemon being unique to a game. Meaning that if you want them all, you’re going to have to fork over 120 US dollars and guess what? That version is almost sold out where I live. So it’s working. And I don’t blame them. I am impressed.
Because I get the feeling that, with absolutely minimum effort they are forking in insane amounts of money.  Nintendo is a company. They need money. I don’t blame them for doing the things they do. I am however, entitled to my opinion and despite everything said above I will see myself getting a copy of Sword or Shield in the future. Because that is how it always is. Because I too, want to relive the moments of my youth when the biggest concern I had was chosing my starter.

Layton’s Mystery Journey - Review
Big, big, BIG spoilers for the game! Do not continue if you haven’t completed it yet!
Regrettably, I have to begin by saying that I am furious.
And even more regrettably, this isn’t a good furious. It’s not a “oh damn, Level-5 broke my heart” furious. It’s not a “this game has left me wanting more and I’m angry I don’t have the sequel yet” furious.
It’s a “I feel cheated” furious.
To give myself time to calm down, I’m going to talk about other parts of the game before I move on to the main reason for my anger and disappointment.
Music:
No tracks stood out as being fantastic, but none of them were bad, either. They blended into the background nicely, and they felt appropriate for the game and its stories. There were a few reprisals of Layton tracks, such as the London theme.
Puzzles:
While there were some great ones, a lot of them felt hit-and-miss, and the puzzle directions were unclear at times. Too often, the puzzle was intentionally misleading, and while the main series had some amazing puzzles like that, it felt overused and gimmicky by the end of LMJ.
However, it is important to remember that we have a new puzzle master! To give them credit, it’s a difficult role that I’m sure they’ll settle into more in future games. Also, it’s very hard to think of new puzzles when so many have already been used in the series.
Gameplay:
I feel like I’d enjoy this game more on a 3DS. It was occasionally hard to navigate the touch screen with my finger, and a stylus wouldn’t have obstructed my view as much. I also found that the text was just a bit too small for me, which caused discomfort at the beginning of my playthrough.
Aside from that, the game did suit the ios format. Because of the episodic nature, it certainly felt like a mobile game, which might be jarring on a 3DS.
However, there were so many missed opportunities for player involvement. Instead of having Kat unravel the cases herself at the end, the game could have easily had multi-choice questions about the mystery for the player to answer as the case is explained to the other characters. Think like what they had in Mystery Room (when Lucy and Alfendi corner the culprit), and even the mainstream Layton games. It just would have made everything that bit more satisfying, because I’d actually feel like I’d contributed to solving the mystery.
But to be fair to LMJ, the Layton series wasn’t great at this in the first few games either. I don’t think any of us saw the whole “everybody is a robot” reveal coming, or the “we’re all tripping on gas” plot twist.
Characters:
I don’t really have any complaints here. Katrielle was a lovely protagonist and she had some huge shoes to fill! She managed to stand apart from her predecessor, and had her own distinct personality as being cheeky but clever. I really enjoyed playing as her.
I wished I’d grown more attached to her companions, though. It’s not that I disliked Ernest and Sherl, more that I felt indifferent. However, it may have taken me a while to warm up to Luke and Emmy too, and it may just be that I haven’t spent enough time with them yet!
In the classic Layton fashion, we were introduced to many characters throughout the game, but they had their own memorable quirks.
Settings:
No complaints! We had a nice mix of old (Gressenheller!!!) and new, and the backgrounds were visually stunning. I’d love to see how they look on the 3DS, where the screen is larger.
Story:
Oh boy. Ohhhhh boy.
Listen, as somebody who loves Layton Brothers: Mystery Room, I know that Level-5 are capable of writing an engaging episodic game. But in my opinion, it just didn’t happen this time around.
Each episode felt rushed. Not necessarily in how it was developed - like I said, the characters and settings were great - but it took me less than an hour to clear some of them. I’d be interested to replay LB:MR and compare the pace of the two games.
I would have liked them to build the game’s ‘overall story’ (and I use that term loosely) much earlier. All of a sudden, I was at the end of Case 12, and as it was unfolding I thought, “Oh, that’s it?”. And it was. They suddenly thrust this mystery on us and solved it neatly in a matter of minutes.
All of the involved characters (the Dragons) were introduced to us very early on in the game. They could have started planting the seeds of unease in Katrielle and the player then, with secret conversations overhead between Dragons, and more questions arising about how they amassed such a fortune. Instead, they left all of it until the last case. Given the name of the game is “The Millionaire’s Conspiracy”, I’m pretty surprised it was held off for so long.
Loose ends:
This, dear gentlepeople, is the biggest reason for my disappointment.
I did not go into this game expecting all the answers. Based on this interview, it seems like there are more games planned for the series, so of course we weren’t going to know everything.
But coming out of the game and knowing almost nothing is just... well, it’s not how it should end, that’s for sure.
Kat’s backstory is still a complete mystery. All we got from her at the end was, “Welp, I’m not Professor Layton’s daughter, but I do know who I am” Cool, but as the player we got nothing. It seemed like Kat’s worked that out on her own, without our involvement.
Hershel Layton’s whereabouts (and reason for leaving) wasn’t divulged. Again, I’m fine with not knowing this, but I’m not okay with the fact that we didn’t get any puzzle pieces to start putting together. It could have been an easy fix. Katrielle could have gotten a letter from him (or somebody else) with a small clue. She could have found an old diary of his with a single word in it. One of her clients could have mentioned seeing him recently, somewhere far away.
Lastly, Lucy Baker’s involvement is still unclear. I could not have been more excited when the opening letter had her name on it! Though it didn’t specify Baker, I 100% believe it’s her. The Layton series already has two Lucys (DC Baker, and a resident from St Mystere), so it makes no sense adding in a third.
So, this begs the question - how do the two know each other? Did they meet through Alfendi, or was it Katrielle who inspired Lucy to join Scotland Yard in the first place? We don’t know where exactly LB:MR and LMJ fit on the Layton timeline, so it’s anybody’s guess right now. They could be occurring at the same time, though if they are, it makes no sense that Alfendi wasn’t mentioned as being part of the Yard.
But, what I do feel confident in is that Lucy will be referenced in the future, and that does fill me with some hope. When you think about it, it makes sense for LMJ to link to LB:MR - both are highly accessible mobile games, and that feels like what Level-5 are aiming for right now.
In conclusion:
I did enjoy the game, but its abrupt ending and loose ends have left a sour taste in my mouth, and unfortunately that’s what I’ll remember most. There are many gameplay features that I’d like to see implemented in future games, to create more player involvement. I’d also like to have fewer but longer episodes, and for the larger mystery to be established much earlier. My biggest grievance is that many of these things have easy fixes.
Anyway, I would absolutely love a second game. Katrielle has so much potential, and like I said, there are many mysteries to make history left.
Feel free to let me know your thoughts! It’s 3am here, and this is probably a rambling mess, so I’ll fix that tomorrow.
EDIT:
After some much needed sleep...
My comments on the game still stand. I believe everything I wrote last night, particularly with regards to the story structure and gameplay. I’ve fast tracked to the last stage of grief - acceptance - about the loose ends, but I still remember how upset I was by the sudden ending, and that’s pretty significant.
Something I forgot to mention was Sherl and his talking abilities. I don’t mind that they didn’t unravel that mystery, but it felt like they just forgot about it, especially with how insistent he was at the start. A little mention throughout the story would have been nice, but again, it wasn’t necessary.

Lil lady layton hc
Ok, in less than 2 months lady layton will hit us with the canon train and I will no longer be able to hc her so freely. So I guess ill share my hc of her right now. And fair warning, it is probably terribly AU. Flora, one day, is walking down a dodgy london street, and topples with a very kind street girl, who despite having no family or friends really, is very happy and cheerful and kind, and quite beautiful at that. Later that night Hersh asks why flora is so flustered. "I met a very kind girl today," she says. "But she has no family, and i forgot to ask for her name." "Is that so?" Replies the professor. Not two days later layton comes home with the same girl, giggling at hershels kindness. Flora is astonished, and blushing as well. "Its you!" She says, and quickly takes her hand. "I never caught your name, im sorry." "Oh dont be! My name is katrielle!" And from that moment forward they become the best girlfriends.

beneath the cut , you’ll find a much shorter compilation of odd factoids about these characters. factoids that, as usual, i came up with at 4am. well. some of these things, i’ve known for a while, but some of them are new.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟏.     ›     alicia marie levesque boyd-whitley.
► medical issues ➔ none! even before the doctors got to her, she was a relatively healthy child. at worst, she had some seasonal bronchitis, but that only happened twice. ► knows far too much about ➔ parasites. she had to do a research project on them in her senior year and... yeah, no. fuck that. ► fears death via ➔ experimentation/surgery. no second guesses as to why. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ genuinely none.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟐.     ›     amari rose kent.
► medical issues ➔ also none! she’s never even gotten sick. she can get sick when she’s dead, but as long as she’s alive, people need her to be healthy. ► knows far too much about ➔ natural disasters! tsunamis, earthquakes, tornadoes, you name it, she can spout some odd facts about it. ► fears death via ➔ overdose. because she’s gotten close to overdose a few times, the idea freaks her out. it’s part of why she hasn’t been overly tempted to take any drugs since the separation. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ slimmer than she thinks. yeah, she can do bad things and will do bad things. but... no, she could never truly harm anyone innocent.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟑.     ›     camden wesley layton lahey.
► medical issues ➔ none. if he did have any in his youth, his dad never took him to the hospital to find out. ► knows far too much about ➔ dinosaurs. he wasn’t too interested in them as a kid, but he would talk to isaac about them when they were younger, so that the kid could focus on something other than their messy father. even when camden forgot everything else about his past life, he retained his strangely infinite knowledge about dinosaurs. ► fears death via ➔ explosions. that’s how he died the first time and even if he didn’t remember, it still freaks him out. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ none. he’s too good.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟒.     ›     charles gerard argent.
► medical issues ➔ in a future plot, he’ll lose his hearing. at the time of writing, he’s physically healthy. ► knows far too much about ➔ horror movies. he doesn’t even like horror movies, but he could talk about them for hours. ► fears death via ➔ his own hand. he knows that, in all likeliness, that’s how he’s going to die. but it does freak him out that the one thing he can’t overcome is himself. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ not... as nonexistent as he would like to believe. he could never go full villain, but if someone that he loved needed him to do something awful, then he could.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟓.     ›     cora vienna hale.
► medical issues ➔ none. ever since the darach thing, her immune system is slightly weaker than other werewolves’, but it’s not a huge concern. ► knows far too much about ➔ volcanoes. when she was traveling with deucalion, he would often drop her in a library with a bunch of books on geography and whatnot. and while she could have learned about pangea, she was much more fascinated by mounts kilimanjaro and vesuvius. as any well-adjusted twelve-year-old would be. ► fears death via ➔ sickness. she won’t say that it terrifies her, but it is... a little more obvious than she thinks. she gets the sniffles when winter comes around and starts bundling up. also has a very strong fear of losing her senses again, which has led to more panic attacks than she’ll ever talk about, thank you. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ not at all slim. above anything else, cora hale is a survivor. she doesn’t see “good” and “evil” so much as she sees “living” or “dying.” to be completely honest with you, if deucalion were to show up at her doorstep, she would follow him without a second thought, because she knows that’s where her survival is. she wouldn’t go against the pack, not even for him, but she wouldn’t try to play the good soldier, either. him aside, if you told cora to burn down beacon hills or slightly hurt the pack, she’d set fire to the whole goddamn world, so long as they were safe.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟕.     ›     derek alexander hale.
► medical issues ➔ none. ► knows far too much about ➔ zombie physiology. yes, he is, in fact, a zombie buff. the inaccuracy of zombie movies (looking at you, twd) just... baffles him. if a zombie is canonically decaying, then there is no way that the same zombie will be around in five years. yes, there will be remains, but there is literally no way that bitch will be walking around after all that time. so, by all means, the zombie apocalypse would be much more manageable after about five years. he has had this discussion with his students many times. ► fears death via ➔ fire. this does not need an explanation. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ honestly, virtually none. maybe at one point, there would have been some temptation, but as it is? yeah, no. he couldn’t imagine doing anything remotely evil, then going home and having to face his pack.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟖.     ›     dominic joseph kim.
► medical issues ➔ none. he’s suffered from alcohol poisoning before, but nothing chronic. ► knows far too much about ➔ demonic possession. this is something he’s always been interested in, because hello, demons.  ► fears death via ➔ drowning. there’s an interesting discussion to be had there, about fearing something so inherently tied to oneself, but... yeah. as an athletic swimmer whose master element is water, he’s had many nightmares about drowning. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ absolutely none. he doesn’t even like confrontation, he can’t hurt peoples’ feelings. he can’t be evil.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟗.     ›     elliot james aldridge.
► medical issues ➔ as a human, he had heart defects that, at the time, had not been named. his immune system was a mess and he had awful asthma, so he was always on the brink of death, until he did die. now, he’s a vampire, so he’s chilling. ► knows far too much about ➔ ancient gods and cult rituals. he started doing digging the second kali was resurrected. partially because he didn’t trust her, but mostly because he wanted to be able to provide comfort and insight if rohan ever needed it. ► fears death via ➔ wolf bite. admittedly, this didn’t really concern him until rohan almost died in his arms and he couldn’t save him. it’s not serious enough for him to side-eye any of the pack, but he... is more cautious when it comes to training than he used to be. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ not that “good” or “evil” are actual things, but he’s spent a very long time on the latter end of things, so... yeah, he could be evil. he’s not nearly as bad as he thinks he is, but he could be.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟎.     ›     erica juliet reyes.
► medical issues ➔ before the bite, she had epilepsy. ► knows far too much about ➔ medieval monarchies. knowing derek turned her into a history buff, she hates it here. ► fears death via ➔ you would think seizures, right? no, hunters. she loves allison and danny so much, trusts them both with her life. but if some unknown comes anywhere near her with a weapon, she’s ripping throats out. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ honestly? none. being evil is lame, grow up.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟏.     ›     fiona evelyn porter.
► medical issues ➔ i mean, she’s stupid, but physically healthy. ► knows far too much about ➔ historic epidemics and plagues. did she learn this so that she could better understand what kali and rohan lived through, and thus comfort them and reassure them that no such thing could ever happen again? yes! did she also learn so that she could figure out how to heal any terrifying sicknesses that came their way? also yes! ► fears death via ➔ being buried alive. again, something to be said about fearing your own element, but it is what it is. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ nonexistent, simple and plain.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟐.     ›     hayden louisa romero.
► medical issues ➔ lupus. fae usually have stronger immune systems, because they’re physically weak, but the human part of her doesn’t have the same advantage. she can usually hide any symptoms (i.e. rashes, joint pain, etc.) with glamour, but she really is... very weak. worse off, since her skin and wing removal. that’s partially why she sleeps so much? she can’t sleep nearly as long as other fae, but she also can’t stay awake as long as they can, either. not to get into the lore here, but when fae are nursing, they can go up to a decade without sleep, out of protectiveness for their young, even if that child is adopted. to make up for this time, fae usually sleep for months up to a year when their children are old enough to care for themselves. (which, due to enhanced senses and whatnot, most fair children are pretty independent before their tenth birthday.) so, upon taking in wayne, hayden’s body automatically went into protection mode and she just... didn’t sleep for three years. however, she is also half-human? so she could have maybe went two more years without sleeping before her body shut down completely. and she also can’t sleep as long as other fae, because her body needs human care and nutrients, which is why she only slept for three weeks, rather than the full six months she should have taken. but, as a result of the unpredictable sleep schedule she put her body on, she’s much more prone to sicknesses now. once again, she covers it all up with glamour, but her body hasn’t even healed from the surgeries she underwent.  notably, she would be... much better off with a faction. all fae can live for very long times,  if not forever, because they choose when to stop aging. that, she can still do. however, her biology isn’t as... strong, because she’s on her own. seelie and unseelie fae are eternal factions, because they have (what amounts to) families. hayden’s... on her own. her mother is seelie, even though she’s estranged from the fae world, which is how she can damn near overdose every night and still not miss a beat. but hayden has been officially exiled from that world, so she has to be incredibly careful about what goes into her body and who/what she comes into contact with. that’s part of why she’s so fearful when it comes to touch; you never know what someone else has, and even a passing cold can be detrimental to her. all of that, on top of a pre-existing medical condition? it’s gonna bite her in the ass sooner than later, but she is perfectly happy to pretend otherwise. ► knows far too much about ➔ monster origin. when she found out that fae were real, she wanted to know what else was, so she started reading up on every monster under the bed. she can now tell you exactly what’s real and what isn’t, where each myth comes from, what’s actually harmful and what just wants a hug, etc. ► fears death via ➔ being crushed to death. again... very fragile bones. you know those barbells at the gym? even a bare one is enough to completely crush her chest. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ high-ish. given everything listed above, you can see why her priority is herself. if the cost for living one more year is being considered “evil,” that’s a moral dilemma she’s willing to live with.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟑.     ›     judith wendy mayer.
► medical issues ➔ type one diabetes. she was born with it, discovered it when she was about three. does she do her best to stay healthy and properly fed, etc.? no! but she’s still alive, so take that, diabetis. ► knows far too much about ➔ marine biology! she has no interest in being a marine biologist, but she can babble about underwater animals until she’s blue in the face. even animals that are not so much underwater! i.e. coconut crabs. what the fuck is up with those, my dude. ► fears death via ➔ sugar imbalance. okay, okay, despite how bad she is about checking her sugar, it really does scare her sometimes? because sometimes, she gets very weak or dizzy or she drops, like, ten pounds in three days, and it freaks her out. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ extremely high. this will be explored in future plots, but despite what she believes, her alliance isn’t in good or evil, it’s... whatever it takes to be loved.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟒.     ›     kali kaira laghari.
► medical issues ➔ none. even when she was 100% human, she was insanely healthy. much like amari, she’s never even been sick. aside from, y’know, the plague. ► knows far too much about ➔ dialects and accents. because she’s been reborn in so many different places, she can immediately pick up on those minor twangs and slangs and tell you where a person is from. ► fears death via ➔ much like cora, she fears dying via sickness. when this actually starts happening to her, she’ll put on a brave face. but the only time she ever got sick, she died? so it freaks her out! ► chances of being “evil” ➔ also extremely high. make no mistake, kali is incredibly well-adjusted, given all that she’s been through. but after it all, she’s not quite as pure and morally just as she used to be. convince a girl that she’s a god then tear her apart in every way you can, and see what kind of god she becomes.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟓.     ›     kira fuyuko yukimura.
► medical issues ➔ none. this is honestly a result of hypochondriac parents, rather than kitsune biology or anything like that. she’d sneeze and her parents were on her ass. so now she’s the picture of health, if only because she has no choice. ► knows far too much about ➔ lost civilizations. upon learning that rohan, iliana and elliot were born in places that no longer exist, she grew interested in how much the world had changed? so she’s done a lot of research into worlds that have been lost, particularly so that she can talk to the vampires about their homes and know what they mean. ► fears death via ➔ something that she can’t see coming. and, though she would never say so, wolf bite. yeah, that whole battle of the beast thing... she is not over it. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ none, she’s too inherently good and is genuinely baffled at the thought of ever hurting anyone without reason.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟔.     ›     liam stephen dunbar.
► medical issues ➔ none. his mental issues are hard enough to deal with, thank you, he’ll keep his body in good shape. ► knows far too much about ➔ aerodynamics. once upon a time, he wanted to be an astronaut. his biological dad is one, so. but... yeah, fuck that. ► fears death via ➔ wolfsbane. he has no idea why no one else seems to worry about it ever, but it freaks him the hell out? now, is this a result of being trapped in a well full of the stuff at one point? yes. will he talk about it? no. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ nonexistent. he can be mean. he can be brutal. but he could never be evil.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟕.     ›     lydia charlene martin.
► medical issues ➔ none. honestly, if she ever had a take a sick day, she’s not sure beacon hills would survive. ► knows far too much about ➔ everything, but in particular, medicine. antidepressants, mood stabilizers, etc, and how to make those effective for the supernaturally-inclined. when jackson asked her to reproduce drugs that would work for him, she stayed up all night and day studying how the drugs were made and how she could replicate the effects for him. she figured it out incredibly fast, but she continues researching the subject, so that she can improve the drugs for him and provide any for anyone else who might need medicine but can’t take it. she’s also working on drugs that work as well as penicillin for the argents. ► fears death via ➔ not necessarily death via, but she does have a fear of being stalked. it’s happened to her before and it just terrifies her. she’s incredibly human and she’ll never be argent-strong, so if she’s ever cornered while she’s alone, she could be done for. and that’s a fear that sticks with her, even though she knows she’s almost always safe. anything else, she can live with. she doesn’t fear death. but she does fear being followed and helpless. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ extremely high. but where jude could be evil for love, lydia will be evil in love. you don’t even have to love her back. but if she loves you and the only way to keep you safe is to do awful things? then she’ll do those awful things and her conscience will be clear.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟖.     ›     scott lucas mccall.
► medical issues ➔ before the bite, he had chronic asthma and bronchitis. ► knows far too much about ➔ psychology! he’s always been interested in knowing how brains work, but he grew especially interested after joining the pack. they all have some form of ptsd, and after the night they met elliot and cora was visibly prepared to fight all of them for him, scott started researching it. he wants to be able to understand all of the pack and why they react to things the way that they do, so he got into psych! too late to major in it, but never too late to learn about it. ► fears death via ➔ asphyxiation, honestly. even if he can no longer die of an asthma attack, he still carries around his inhaler, because he is genuinely terrified of being unable to breathe. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ absolutely nonexistent.
𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐅𝐈𝐋𝐄 𝟎𝟎𝟏𝟗.     ›     tatum coretta bellfleur.
► medical issues ➔ nothing in particular, but she does have a very weak immune system. winter baby who got sick literally the day after she was born, and her body never fully recovered from it. so now she catches every sniffle that comes around. would pretend otherwise, except amari does not let her get away with it. they always joke that amari never gets sick because tate is always sick. oddly enough, though, tatum can go a week without sleeping and be just fine, while amari gets a headache after one (1) night. ► knows far too much about ➔ classical music composition. despite singing at local bars and the like, she has no interest in music herself, but will hold full discussions with owen and amari over the art of composing a piano piece. ► fears death via ➔ starvation. this... also needs no explanation. she’s seen the depths of poverty, knows what it’s like to go without, and nothing scares her more than that. ► chances of being “evil” ➔ literally could not imagine. she’s a pacifist? doesn’t even hold malicious intent for those who hurt her? that said, tatum is extremely gullible. smart as heck, but so incredibly gullible. if peter hale asked her to work for him but never told her exactly what he was doing, then she would certainly go along with it, because she doesn’t realize what’s happening. but as long as she’s knowledgable of intentions, she balks at the idea of doing anything even slightly morally corrupt. do i bring this up because it might happen one day? ...maybe so. i’m bored and i’m considering it.

Note
do all pls
It took a while, and I am sorry for taking so long, but I finally had the time to do it ;u;
Thank you for the ask!
Favorite video game?
I can’t choose just one, I have quite a few in my heart.
Professor Layton Series (My fave being Miracle Mask)
Pokemon (Of course! My faves being ORAS, RSE, HGSS, SUMO, B2W2)
And Animal Crossing (New Leaf and HHD)
First console you owned?
The super NES.
I come from a family of “gamers”, in a sense that my dad and most of his cousins are big video game fans.
However, when he was younger, they couldn’t afford any video game, it was too expensive and well, the income was very low, so they mostly spent their times in Arcades. So when my dad got married and finally had a budget, like one of the first things he did was buy a NES lol
He taught me how to splay super Mario when I was very young, tho I don’t even remember the first time I played it.
The first console my parents bought for me was the nintendo 64. And the first one that only belonged to me (Cuz I shared the 64 with my dad and my cousins) was the game boy colour.
A game that holds a special place in your heart?
I think Pokemon Ruby! God, I have so many good memories of this game! Like it was such a good experience for me!
I kinda was “kinnie” with May and saw myself a lot in her. And I fell in love with so many pokemon in that gen, like Torchic, Milotic, Absol, Azuril, Jirachi etc.
I got my first pokemon to lvl 100 (My blaziken). I found my first ever Shiny Pokemon (Trapinch who evolved into Flygon) and was lucky to get a lot of jackpot at the casino (Which I really sucked before lol). I also had a lot of fun times with the secret bases. And I loved the characters like Brendan, Winona and Wally. I discovered a lot of stuff on my own that up until today was memorable to me, like finding the 5% chance of fishing Feebas and trying to discover how to get Azuril (we didn’t have bulbapedia at the time and couldn’t read very well in English.) I also fell in love with the wonders of Hoenn!
After like 200 hours I think, the games had a thing were the clock just stops moving and you can’t plant berries and such and it kinda sucks. I know it doesn’t change much in game, but when I was a kid it felt like the end of the game for me. And it kinda made me sad, but I still have the cartridge intact. I never had the heart to reset the game, I just moved my pokemon to other games (HGSS). Ruby will always be like a special treasure for me.
Favorite video game character?
This one is difficult, because I love so many lol Like I could talk about days, especially since they have a lot of characters in pokemon.
But I guess I will spare the details and go straight to a video game character that I appreciate and love a lot: Professor Layton.
That man is just such good guy? Like he is charismatic, fancy, so kind and so smart! It is fun playing along with him as a main character! And it’s super funny considering that the plots get so weird sometimes, that someone as logical as him can always figure out what is going on before everyone lol
He is just such a nice guy that you would like to meet you know? Also his voice is so calm and nice, it’s soothing!
He is voiced in Japanese by  Yo Oizumi (Which I would recommend everyone to give a listen to! You won’t regret! It’s so soothing and beautiful!) And Christopher Robin Miller in English!
Least favorite video game character?
I don’t have a character that I dislike with a big passion, but since I am given the opportunity I need to talk about one that annoyed me and I will probably put lot of people in a bad mood….please don’t take it personal, it’s just my opinion ;;
But for me, Zin/nia in ORAS made my experience with the post game some much more annoying!
Like I already have kinda a hate-love relationship with Post game ORAS (The delta episode). I like that they added it to the game and gave more story, I adored the moment you go to space and fight Deoxys. All this was so wonderful. I dislike however how you are like “Place A, fight someone. Ok now go to place B. Fight someone again”. It’s really annoying…and the fact that Zinnia’s character was rushed(?) into the story made it more annoying to me. Like we have some details of her story but not a whole lot. We can probably connect the dots…but still?? It felt weird to me. I thought there would be more to it, but it didn’t. And because of that it made the whole experience annoying and almost frustrating, because we don’t know a whole lot of what’s going on, but Zinnia doesn’t explain either. She is just angry and in a rush, and instead of just explaining what is happening, she goes around and steal stuff and punch people??? And when Steven the champion tries to offer some help, she is just rude?? which honestly I don’t care if she hates him, but logically if you want someone to listen and help you, why are you just being horrible to everyone?? And all that alternate universe will be destroyed…is like ok…I get what you mean but HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT FOR SURE??? How is anyone supposed to know that?? I just…idk it frustrated me. And I thought they would one day explain, but it has been like 5 years? and GameFreak maybe forgot about it, so it’s still a bitter memory to me. I know may love her and it’s ok, but to me she came off as unsympathetic at the time.
Favorite genre?
I would say RPG, but I haven’t complete any RPG in years, except for Pokemon. So I guess just relaxing games? Like Animal Crossing? Or games you can explore? Because one of the thing I love the most about games is exploring the vast worlds and interesting cities.  Idk, I also like puzzle games a lot lol
Video game character you’ve had a crush on?
Well when I was a young kid, I had a crush on Silver and Bugsy lol But now I don’t think I have crushes on any characters to be honest. I kinda lost having crushes on characters, but I am not sure why.
I guess if I have to choose, I would say Henry Ledore from Professor Layton: Miracle Mask, because I really liked that character and his personality. And it’s the closest that I have to a character crush, even though it is barely one lol
First video game you remember playing?
Super Mario for the SNES. But my memories are kinda hazy, so the one I remember the most is playing Diddy Kong Racing lol.
Age you started gaming?
I was super young, I can’t really remember when I played a video game for the first time, but I really started being interested in games around 7-ish. When I started playing Pokemon and discover other video games with my cousins.
Hardest video game you’ve played?
Listen…I don’t have the patience to play hard games…when it gets tough I give up…If I have the choice I would choose the easier mode…so I can’t even answer this question, because I would be saying a very easy game and people will be laughing at me and saying I am a fake gamer or something.
Video game you’ve spent the most time on?
Tomodachi Life (Don’t judge, I love it!)
Animal Crossing New Leaf
Pokemon Alpha Sapphire
Most embarrassing gaming moment?
When I was a kid I got stuck playing Golden Sun at the Mercury Lighthouse. It was early in the dungeon, like right after you get Mia, there was a statue you had to do Ply on, and I never got it. So instead I wondered for hours in the few accessible places in the world and did almost everything else I could. when I discovered, I cried almost of joy, my characters were so over-level at that point lol
I tried to play Pokemon competitive mode a few years ago because everyone was talking about it and lost almost immediately, I had no regrets because I dislike competitive modes, so it just proved that it wasn’t for me, but at the same time, it was darn embarrassing.
My first ever game of Kingdom Hearts was 358/2 Days. My experience with KH so far was only KHI that my cousin had. So I never really played it or knew the story, I just knew there were Disney characters and Mickey was apparently a King??? But I just wondered around Traverse Town (thus why I guess that town is so nostalgic to me), I wanted to explore like Atlantica because Ariel was there, but my cousin didn’t let me because it sucked (tho to be fair, he was right, but I didn’t know that!). Fast forward to Days, I was excited to finally start my own adventure and rapidly got confused. Like where was Mickey? My companions Donald and Goofy? Why was everyone talking about nobodies?? (Which for the longest time I thought meant like a insult instead of actually a real thing in the games lol). And to me the game tutorial felt soooo long. I just wanted to explore, and I lost patience so rapidly. Like if you would ask me, I would say that I spent almost 100 days on that game, but apparently I gave up so early, right before going to the first Disney World (one day before according to my brother lol…). I got roasted by my bro and cousins.
Scariest video game you’ve played?
I also don’t do scary stuff lol ;u; I get scary pretty easily! Like I got scared from playing limbo and couldn’t sleep well that night (I am not kidding lol)
Most memorable gaming moment?
Getting my Shiny Trapinch, finding Feebas and hatching my first Azuril in Ruby!
Also when me and my cousin were exploring the Silver islands (? myabe not the proper name, but I am too lazy to search) in Pokemon Silver, we found Lugia!! And It was super exciting for us! We were super happy for the rest of the day!
Video game character you wish you could meet in real life?
I guess Professor Layton, Aqua from KH and Maya Fey from the Ace Attorney games (She is so funny!).
PC, Xbox, Playstation, or Nintendo?
Almost only Nintendo.
Gaming company you’re most loyal to?
Nintendo, mostly because they make the games I am the most interested in, like Pokemon, AC, Mario, etc.
If you could only play one video game for the rest of your life, which would you choose?
I guess Pokemon, because I can’t imagine leaving without pokemon. But honestly, I can’t just live with ONE game, I would get bored eventually.
Do you use strategy guides?
I used when I was a kid. Now I just use references online when I need it.
How often do you use cheats?
If it’s a in-game glitch, I love trying it. If it’s a cheat that you need to use like a 3rd party, then I never use it.
The only time I cheated was when I was playing DPP, I really wanted to capture Creselia and other event legendary (which I never got, because I live in an obscure town and Nintendo didn’t even give events close to us here so… :) ). I made myself had like 100 master ball in the game, I was just so tired of chasing after Creselia. And honestly I don’t regret doing it. The only reason I don,t use 3rd party cheats is just because I don,t like to use it in the game, I’m paranoid and afraid I will loose my file or something lol
Competitive or single player?
Single player, definitely.
Video game character you want to/have cosplayed?
At a con I went, there was someone dressed like Donk City! Peach. I kinda want to try this but maybe a Roselia or Daisy version!
The other I want to try is KH3 Kairi, just because I adore her outfit. But I feel like it would be difficult and kidna not comfortable to wear, so I am pretty sure I will never lol
Ever go to a video game convention?
No never. It is quite far from where I live. But someday I would like to go.
Hardest boss fight you’ve been in?
I don’t remember honestly.
Video game you wish you could burn from your memory?
Time Hollow. It was kinda a boring game.
The other would be Sims…because I get really distracted and addicted to it to the point I don’t do much else when playing with it and I don,t like being like this since I feel like I am wasting my free time when I play for too long.
Favorite gaming series?
Pokemon
Professor Layton
Animal Crossing
Kingdom Hearts (Even though, I didn’t even played half of the games...)
Do you skip tutorials, or find them useful?
I try to listen when I am not familiar with a game, but I most likely get bored and eventually skip…
Best online gaming experience?
I don’t play online.
Worst online gaming experience?
I don’t play online.
Why do you game?
I game cuz I like gaming. lol It is just a nice hobby and a nice way to relax honestly.
