So, Tumblr is back on my phone after five (or six?) years.
The way it happened was, I stumbled upon a YouTube Short (YouTube Shorts are so 2023 and who would’ve thought that we’ll be writing it onto a Tumblr post) of a food content creator (again, very 2020-esque) saying that they will resort to LinkedIn and MySpace since YouTube is, apparently, banning them.
MySpace? I thought. That’s still a thing?
I hurriedly searched for it on the App Store, only to find that MySpace is only accessible through its website—which the UI looks like an outdated Bandcamp site.
But the App Store presented me with a chance to reinstall Tumblr again. Why not? What’s a few good megabytes eaten from my phone storage for the sake of nostalgia?
Then, here we are. I have probably spent two hours last night scrolling through my “blog” full of GIF reblogs from series I’ve seen over the years. Some are about music; whether the tracks themselves or candid portraits of the artists which I considered aesthetic at the time. I mostly played it safe and kept it cool—which is the result of trying to keep up with the cool people I follow. I’ve had a browse of their pages as well, to see how they’re doing. Most of them uploaded their last post eight years ago. Some are still quite active, with an update as recent as four months ago. Or a week ago.
To be authentic and not lie about my feelings, I did post some texts which displayed melancholia of not having a lover, or longing for one. Thinking of it now, I was way too young to feel such things. Did I really feel that way? Or did I succumb to the pressure of my peers having their own partners at the age of fourteen? Am I allowed to cringe at this? Or should I give myself grace and keep into consideration that we’ve all been there?
Despite the push and pull of emotions in me, I’m happy to say that I have grown. A whole lot. To the point that it doesn’t seem like a bad idea to keep my past posts and look at it at an angle of, well, growth and maturity. After all, so many things have happened, there is always a bigger fish to fry, and people do grow!
I’ll probably continue logging my thoughts and musings, considering that Tumblr is on the somehow quiet zone of social media. Writing is my first love, after all. Maybe I will continue with the aesthetic reblogs, or reposts of things which hit close to home. I’ll have to think of my way around this site again.
Given all that, I guess I just wanted to say that it’s good to be back.

About moderating and banning content on AO3!
Okay so! I haven’t had the spoons to do this for a while but I cracked and ranted about it on twitter which is... not... conducive to long rants, so!
This is a h u g e discussion part of the l o n g history that led to the creation of AO3, which older, more informed, and more articulate people have talked about at length and can be found around if you look (I reblog some of it in my AO3 and fandom history tags for the curious). So I won’t go into that here, nor into the practical reasons why it’s not even possible to put that system in place anyway.
Arbitrarily, or the purpose of this post, because it’s the biggest topic I’ve seen brought up lately, I’ll be talking about fic depicting underage characters in se*ual situations, but honestly I could hold the exact same conversation on literally any controversial content.
This is about why you, specifically, if you are a content creator and especially if you are marginalised and especially if you are queer and especially especially if you are sensitive to fiction depicting certain things... do not, actually, want a banning system on AO3.
What? Of course we do. There’s a lot of p*do shit on AO3 and p*do shit is gross. No one should condone that, wtf? It would be easy to do — just periodically delete the entire Underage tag!
What will happen if that is done is that people will re-upload and continue to write it, they’ll just stop tagging and you will run into it with zero warning nor ability to filter it out. Again, this is not a theoretical — we know this is what happens. When I was a teen, adult content (all adult content) was not allowed on FF.NET; it was everywhere regardless, and without tags. The exact same thing happened on tumblr when adult content was banned as well. It’s not a matter of “staff not handling it well” — it just doesn’t work.
To keep safe the people who need to be able to exclude that tag, that tag needs to exist and be used.
Well, shucks. A reporting system then?
A reporting system would operate in one of two ways:
-an algorithm, which would delete a lot of stuff we wouldn’t want it to delete.
-humans, which is... the bigger problem.
An algorithm sounds great. We do want it to delete everything.
Okay. What about the daddy k*nk fics between consenting adult characters? What about the fics featuring characters that are children in the canon but are adults in the fic? What about the fics about teenagers exploring their se*uality together, written by adults about the experiences they remember having or wish they could have had? What about the thousands of SasuNaru and Drarry and other shounen and YA fics that will get written, by teens or by people who remember being teens? What about the se*ually explicit fic written by teens who are se*ually active in real life? What about the fics about CSA as trauma, about healing from it? What about the fics written by survivors of CSA to cope about their trauma? What about the fics that clearly show that it’s evil and traumatic? What about the super dark, harrowing, but beautiful and artistic that I’m glad I read even though it fucked me up for days? What about the ones that were really shitty but also horribly hot?
Well, some of these are still not okay, but maybe some might be. It depends on how it’s written. We’ll have humans moderating content and deciding, then.
Okay.
The thing is, I don’t know which of the things I just listed were okay for you to be depicted in fiction and which were too much. Odds are I don’t agree with you. Odds are if I asked 10 people randomly picked off the street, not everyone would agree.
Odds are, even if AO3 arbitrarily decided on which of those are allowed and which are not, you would not agree with their choice, and you would still be unhappy with the decision. (Or you would be happy, but your friends wouldn’t.)
Odds are, different AO3 content moderators might not agree on whether a given fic qualifies or not — is it artistic enough? Does it show enough that these actions are evil and wrong? Can the author prove they’re a teenager? Can the author prove they are a CSA victim? Can the author prove that this is to help them cope with their trauma? The author seem to be functioning alright, they mustn’t really be traumatised!
You know what I mean! There’s absolute, objectively gross shit out there that is not artistic and should not be published.
I agree that there’s vile stuff out there that makes me sick and that I think is very clearly just ped*philic trash. But there is no way to, 1) stop those from getting published anyway, 2) take those down and preserve the safety of everything else.
If we start forbidding some things, there’s two ways to go about it.
One single, clear, arbitrary rule — for instance, absolutely no adult content featuring characters under 18 (leaving aside the fact that this would not even work for the reason cited above). So we lose all the stuff from teenagers, all the coming of age stories about adolescence, all the stuff from CSA survivors; people who need to write it can’t publish it anymore, and people who need to read it can’t anymore either (and as a cool bonus, they’re told it’s wrong and made to feel bad about it). Depending on whether the rules applies to characters that are under 18 in the canon, we lose entire fandoms.
Or, subjective moderation by humans, according to what they estimate to be gross.
Let’s assume all moderators can agree on what’s gross or not.
If there is a system in place to ban some underage works because “gross shit”, then that means other gross stuff can be taken down on account of being gross and harmful.
Yeah! Gross stuff should be taken down! Come on, surely everyone agrees on what’s gross and harmful.
Ah.
But the problem is.
Here is a list of things I have seen — with my eyes seen — called harmful to be depicted in fiction:
Murder
Non-con
Inc*st
Cannibalism
Torture
Self-harm
Mental illness
Drugs
Racism
K*nk
Non-negotiated k*nk, but healthy k*nk is ok
Spanking k*nk
BDSM where the woman is a bottom, but woman top is ok
Healthy depictions of BDSM
Unhealthy depictions of BDSM
Queer people doing bad things
Abusive relationships
Rival/Enemies to lovers
Redemption stories
A happy relationship between a 17 yo and an 18 yo
A happy relationship between a 20 yo and a 60 yo
A happy relationship between a boss and their employee, or a college teacher and a student
A happy relationship between a 14 yo boy and an older teenage boy, because that’s reminiscent of older men preying on younger gay boys IRL
Se*ual content featuring a character whose age is unclear in canon and some people headcanon them as being underage, some as being a young adult
Loving, consensual fluff between characters that are evil villains, because it romanticises them and their actions
Dark content shipping female characters
Fluffy content shipping female characters, because it’s misogynistic to act like lesbians are only soft all the time
Consensual s*x featuring a canonically asexual character, because it implies that all aces can and should still have se*
Fics about the same canonically asexual character hating s*x, because that erases the experience of s*x-positive aces
Shipping a character who is perceived by some fans as queer-coded with a character of a different s*x
The tendency to ship a black character with white characters
Fluffy drunk s*x, because that’s not actually consensual
Sleep s*x, because that’s not actually consensual
Trans characters not experiencing dysphoria, because that idealises the trans experience
Consensual s*x between adults that are not married
LGBT+ content, because kids shouldn’t see that.
I guarantee you: you, I, and 10 random people plucked from the street will not agree on what, in that list, is and isn’t okay to publish and consume fiction of.
So why should your taste be the one followed? Why should it be the taste of mods you don’t know? Why should anyone get to dictate? What if the mods think your OTP is gross and your NOTP is fine?
This is the slippery slope argument.
Yes, it is the slippery slope argument. Because we know it happens. Because we’ve been there, because I’ve seen it happen myself twice already and I’m not even thirty. Because we know people do complain loudly about all of these things.
And because the second there is a banning system in place, assholes will use the system to abuse it and get stuff they just don’t like taken down using the “it is gross” argument, and one day you’ll wake up and the beautiful fic that helped you come to terms with your abuse/trauma/identity/orientation/k*nk for feet will be taken down and wonderful vulnerable creative people will have been harassed out of fandom because they argued with 1 person who didn’t like their foot k*nk fic that happened to also feature, for instance, a CSA trauma backstory.
Again: not exaggerating. Not theoretical. It happens, we know it happens, AO3 was created literally because it happens.
I still fucking hate that stuff.
That is completely fine and normal. No one likes everything. Me too! Most of the dark stuff is niche and the creators know only few people will like it the same way they do.
(For the record, I get grossed out and triggered by fics about an asexual character who does not like s*x having s*x with their partner to make them happy. Deep in my gut everything screams that that’s fucked up, terrifying and harmful, how can people write that. But I recognise that there are people who love and need that, and I leave those people and their content alone.
OTOH, I read a lot of otherwise dark shit and I enjoy it in the same way I enjoyed, say, Hannibal, in the same way some people enjoy true crime documentaries, horror movies or r*pe fantasy k*nk. It helps me explore stuff that I like to see in fiction, in a safe, controlled way. I’m also asexual, 90% s*x-repulsed IRL, and, obviously, I would never abuse a child. For that matter, I wouldn’t kill and eat people, either, nor would I do 90% of the tamer k*nky stuff I read.
Of course, Hannibal was fucked up and lots of people probably think Hannibal was gross and should not have been aired — but as exemplified by the fact that it was created, aired and watched, lots of people thought it was fine, interesting and even fun to watch.)
You can and should curate your experience and protect yourself. The AO3 website now allows you to exclude certain tags, and people have developed tools to help with that such as plugins that save your filters or hide fics that contain certain words.
But no, it isn’t going to, and it shouldn’t, get banned.

Odaiba Memorial Day 2021
My first Odaiba Memorial Day while being an active part of the fandom, and it’s high time I write an essay about my crackhead obsession with Yakari.
(*There will be some swearing & f-bombs in this post)
As a kid, Yamato was like the ‘blue and cooler Taichi’ to me, like he doesn’t exist without being adjacent to the gogglehead. Also my family didn’t have the full Dark Masters arc in our CD collection, so I literally knew nothing about Yams’ emotional meltdown. But now, I adore this overly sensitive dork, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. Maybe I’m biased in this reading, but I think Yamato has had to push himself to mature faster than his peers; and he’s very much a mini-adult at a young age.
For all these grand monster battles, the main cast are still children; among them Yamato is a kid dealing with a lot of unresolved issues but he’s got a lot of heart, he’s passionate about those he holds dear but he just doesn’t know how to process this. Another thing that goes hand-in-hand with Yamato is the fact he’s a musician. Again, I could be reaching way into my ass here; but there’s this mumbo jumbo real life idea of the ‘depressed creative’, and Yamato works his way out of that dangerously romanticised label.
The kid’s got a passion for music, he’s literally been playing the harmonica since Takeru was in diapers .Without spoiling DA:LEK, Yamato still holds onto that flame into adulthood but it’s not something he can actively work on; and that takes its toll. I love Yamato because he’s someone who cares so much about those around him and what he does; and he’s just a kid who’ sorting things out and wanting to better himself and well fuck, if that isn’t relateable.
Even with the flaws that the Tri films have, I think it’s a natural progression for Yamato’s character journey. I see people saying how ‘they just turned him into a tsundere’ or ‘he’s so snappish now’. But seeing as most of the Tri cast are in High School and general teenagers are assholes to each other, yeah it’s not unreasonable to see why Yamato’s the way he is now. He didn’t lose his touch with the Crest of Friendship; when the literal world is up in flames, there’s still the same loyal and compassionate Yamato who understands the importance of being there for and with his friends.
Yamato’s a big mushy boy who has a hard time conveying what he feels and his needs; Hikari isn’t any better and this was how I grew to love the concept of them being together.
She’s not the Chosen Child of Light for nothing, Hikari’s symbiotic partnership with Tailmon is a very shoehorned metaphor of being an angel from Heaven and I absolutely eat that shit up. Fans have pointed out Hikari’s so mysterious with her role and powers as late member of the team, the same can be said for her personality. You see Hikari, you think ‘sweet, little girl’ and in part thanks to the 02 dub, she grows into being this sassy brat.
A brat who has trouble asserting herself and is prone to literally get dragged into an ocean of depression. Like any respectful human, Hikari cares for her friends and family; but a mixture of that and a tendency to devalue herself is Hikari’s fatal flaw. She’s too self-sacrificing to a fault, and this reflects the other extreme end of her crest.
In my own overly pretentious words, I think Hikari has self-imposed on herself for ‘being the light of the team’; like she carries herself as a doll whose job is to bring others out of darkness when she’s still stuck in the shadows herself. Hikari doesn’t allow herself to verbalise her wants, let alone her needs because she doesn’t want to inconvenience others; she just goes with the flow and puts on a mask of toxic optimism.
I am aware this analyse could be me scraping the bottom of the barrel, but it’s how I interpreted Yamato and Hikari’s character; and now I’ll articulate my brain rot with how the fuck are these two being shipped.
You have these two people who already have this history and experience of being Chosen Children, but there’s also an underlying sub-connection of them being each other’s brothers’ best friend. As many Yakari fanfics have headcanon, it’s not unreasonable to think that Yamato’s at the Yagamis’ apartment frequently because A) Taichi is his best friend and B) The Ishida apartment is prolly empty ‘cause Hiroaki’s out being a workaholic. The Yagamis become the family that Yamato didn’t have growing up, and they welcome him with open arms. At their apartment, things are warm and rowdy, he doesn’t have to be alone with his thoughts and they treat him as a second son.
Listen, I've been a diehard Takari shipper too, but I genuinely think Takeru and Hikari can be platonic soulmates. They know each other like the back of their hand, they’re cosmically entwined and their Digimon are in sync; they’re also legit a pair of best friends too. I know early 2000’s fics depict Yakari as being this big drama; but I have a weak heart and I’m here to say Yakari can be cosy and comforting and they’re just two idiots in love who need to be honest with each other.
I imagine their courtship not to be this grand display of fireworks and ‘the chase’, but a very subtle experience with slow burn. For me, Yakari is very much the first blossom of spring. They represent new beginnings and youth, the gentle lull of Mother Nature tending to the earth, something that’s natural but the routine has existed for centuries. Yakari is very much a gentle love, and with everything I’ve said about their characters; these two learn to embrace and nurture the other until they have a whole garden of spring’s blossoms.
This crackship has the surface-layer appeal of ‘brooding lone wolf’ and ‘sweet angel’, so when you peel the layers to find these two very private characters who just need that one-on-one reassurance/affirmation; this ship is a warm blanket of fluff and yes that’s basically the plot of my fics. It’s the charm of slice-of-life, the endearment of growing and improving yourself with the one you love with the occasional reminder that this is a series founded on puppies evolving into angels.
I’ve had enough of tragedies and melodramatic love affairs. I write about Yakari because as cliche as this sounds, I want more stories about ‘the light of friendship’. Yes that was a god awful line, but it captures why I have brain rot for this pair.
To celebrate my first OMD, I have uploaded a special chapter on my AO3 fic titled ‘Mon ange’; it wouldn’t be August 1st if I didn’t half-hazardly work on this leading up to the big day. It couldn’t fit on Instagram, but this rambling piece is part of a bigger essay on my tumblr, so that’s also up and running. I hold Digimon near and dear to my heart, and I go about sharing that love by gushing about Yakari.

the theme I don’t know how to describe because it has too many things featured in it and it will take a year or
aro-ace theme!
note that you are allowed to use the theme for whatever you want, change all colors, images (you want to make it a marvel thing? go for it! It’s personal and you want to use other flag colors? go pick those rainbow colors!), but my inspiration was, well, not having seen aro-ace themes before and wanting to make one. I didn’t upload background images but you have the option. Feel free to edit as you please, just don’t remove the credit or claim it’s yours!

I’d apologize for the length but it’s due to how many things I added to the theme and that you should know about.
now, what can you edit from your customization page:
-nearly every font and its color and size, so that if a font is by default bigger than others you can easily reduce the size. There is a select menu for the body font with all the fonts present in this blog, so you know what they are and can type the one you want for other eleents. I think I only left a couple to be edited from the editor, like your quotes posts if you reblog them a lot. This includes h2 as it’s what you use as ‘big font’ in your posts and h3 in case you want to personalize it and use it for something on purpose, as it has to be added to the html of the post.
-one of the new things:I used a gradient for the backgrounds of the big container, the sidebar and the posts container, but also of tumblr’s default music player (latter done initially following @octomoosey‘s tutorial then messed with by me hence no album art). See static preview posts. You can type the colors straight from the costomization page like this:
if you want one solid color you can just write, for example: black, black as it needs at least two. To bottom/To left/to top/to right change the direction. The only thing you need to edit from the html is if you want to go from linear-gradient (like you see in the sidebar) to radial-gradient (like in the big container which has green in the center and purple on the outside) and vice versa, if you want.
-you can also upload background images of the sidebar, container and bigcontainer and select the optional blending with the colors, which can be none and you only see the images or something like screen or hard-color and check the results (bigcontainer as an overlay gif on Screen now)
-more typing: you can paste the symbol or the symbol code for the list items and the decorations around the post title, right now both being spades. *

One is the toggle button ifshowtinyimage, and the other is ‘tinyimageisthesource’, if you turn that off you upload the image yourself. If you add a source to your posts, it will appear among the permalinks regardless.

-besides all normal colors and borders you can pick the color of the border/glow/shadow (call it as you want) of three different categories, or turn it off: the mainglow for big elements like containers and sidebar and sidebar images, the audios glow for players like spotify, regular one or soundcloud. Finally the images shadow when inside your posts. The latter is set on inherit because it means that if an image is also a link like your tiny-image it will be of the same color of your links and change on hover. That is something you can only change on the editor by searching for color:inherit and change it to what you want, if you don’t want to turn it off.
-askbox colors have been changed with @eggdesign‘s tricks! look for ask_form in the editor and try changing the number of filter there to see more effects. Also the askbox never shrink, a fix by @whateverhtml
-pinned post has a little banner, styled like permalinks.
-you can pick a color for top-info which are the date and notes. I left it empty because it automatically gets the default links color but you can pick it yourself.
-turn on and off unnested captions looks for textposts and for all other posts (as people who use xkit to edit previous posts will get blockquotes anyway and may not like the final result) thanks to @annasthms code.
-blockquotes are of alternating colors, by @bychloethemes. You can obviously choose the same color if you want them to just have the one. You can also select the type of blockquote, if a solid line or dots or dashes.
-you can choose if your smaller sidebar image, sidebarimg2, is an image you’ll upload or if it’s your avatar/portrait by toggling it on and off. If you don’t want sidebar images and you don’t upload any, there are instructions on top of the html to delete the border so you only see the sidebar bg. (basically just delete their box-shadow)
-speaking of which, your title will wrap around the second image like in the preview. If that doesn’t work for you you can try changing sizes and font or by going to the editor and changing the margin-top so it’s out of the sidebar image’s reach and can be a “straight line” again (in case it doesn’t fit and the long title is cut in the wrong place)
-you can turn on and off a copy link of the post button on the far left of your permalinks bar, so people can copy the permalink from dash - also by glenthemes.
-navigation links have two alternating colors, odd links right now are black, even links are white, and their hovers are the opposite of that. You can make them all of the same color, in which case you’ll need to look for .navilink a:hover and change the hover color for both. If you have custom pages and enable the link to show it will be automatically added. To change the cat icons just search for ‘cat’ and replace as pleased. To change the ask icon because maybe you don’t have them enabled look for ‘envelope’ with your ctrl + f. You can type urls and titles of navi links from the custom page, the first two are automatically home and ask, there are three more under the description. All icons from font-awesome have a black border so the white ones don’t disappear on light backgrounds, you can change that looking for .fas
-you can select post-sizes: 400, 450, 500, 540. Whether the sidebar is next to the container or on top will depend on your post size and the screen width as at some point they may not fit. They always do fit on desktop though, and on screens that are smaller than 800px the sidebar is assumed to be on top and will have a max height of 300px (but you can scroll down). I couldn’t make the bigcontainer get bigger for giant screens as I can’t calculate the right size in which all post-sizes + sidebar will look good.
-lightboxes show images with a glow too. Speaking of which you get lightboxes as always, pxu photoset fix and video resizing fix all by @shythemes and with the bychloethemes fix. npf photosets fix by glenthemes. No href.li addition from tumblr when you add a link to a post by @magnusthemes.
-soundcloud player is minimal and its play button is the same color of your permalinks icons thanks to shythemes tutorial. spotify is also minimal, instructions to change it are there.
-tumblr controls are small and semi-transparent until you hover, also dark regardless, followed painthemes tutorial.
-chats are styled like imessages by ncrthlanes now deactivated, submit posts have at least the submitter’s url recognizable, reblogged asks also get a background for the answer as well as borders, link posts are styled as much as a link-post can be styled.
-there are already links and similar things written to be an example in your customization page but in any case you get instructions in the editor and everything is divided in sections as much as possible. Also I’m here for any questions.

how does one deep fry memes. it’s for scientific purposes
Ok so! It’s actually really fun and pretty easy to do.
You can use almost any photo editing app, from Photoshop, to the built-in editing software of your phone. But you must be able to do two things: one is that you must be able to "save as” or “export single layer”/“export as” an image as a .jpg file. If possible use a program that allows you to dictate the quality of the copy, but if not, that’s ok. You can work around it. The other is the ability to apply filters/change the saturation and contrast of the image.
Here’s how I made the Technoblade meme (more or less):

We start out here with an already low-quality, small .jpg screenshot. But you can use any quality, size, and format of image as long as you save it as a .jpg file later. It’s just easier to make .jpg artifacts pop on a smaller image than a bigger one, and that’s what we want. Remember, quality is of the utmost importance, in that there will be none whatsoever once we’re done here. It is at this point, before you start frying, you’ll want to made modifications like eye lasers, text, and emojis. I’m not gonna add any because I can’t be assed. Save the eye-bleeding color filters for the end, it’ll look better.

Once you have made your desired edits, just click the “save as” button and select “.jpg” from the file type options if they’re given. You have made a copy. Now take the copy and open it up in your editing software. “Save as” again, and now you have a copy of a copy. Repeat step 2 until your image starts accumulating an acceptable amount of jpg artifacts, which are those rainbow-y stripey squares and bars on the image.
If you actually know how to use a more complicated photo editing software (for example, Photoshop) check to see if it allows you to export files, it may also gives you the option to change a quality setting. I reccomend setting it to around 30%, that seems to be the magic number, and export a few generations of copies. It takes fewer generations than “save as”-ing.

I posterized the image, and saved it as another .jpg copy. If you do not know what posterization is or how to do it, you can skip this step, but I think it makes some of the colors look funnier and I like that.
Please remember that it may take many generations of copies before the image looks this degraded, if you’re using software that doesn’t allow you to control the level of compression (the shittiness) of your jpg images.

Sharpening the image makes the jpg artifacts on the image more prominent. Very helpful. This is yet another copy.

Now you make the image brighter and more colorful. Slap a filter called “Vivid” or “Pop” or something on it, or adjust the brightness and saturation yourself. Here’s where I had basically stopped, when I made the meme I posted. It looks awful.
But we can go further beyond.

Here I lowered the brightness of the image and upped the contrast. Now it looks even worse (better). But please note that while it does look more fried, it also loses details and other information that are useful in telling what it’s a picture of, such as the Technoblade’s IGN above his head. So just be aware of information your image might lose when you’re mangling it. Same goes for if you posterize it, Technoblade’s name could have been very easily lost by making it the same color as the background.
But I’d like to explain about how .jpg files actually work a little bit, because I feel it’s important as to why making copies of copies is important.
A .jpg file is a not a “lossless format”. It is a format that is supposed to compress the file size of an image by sacrificing just a little bit of quality. In other words, takes up less space on your computer but sometimes doesn’t look as nice as other formats.
But a smaller size is good, in some cases. For websites and online media where loading speed is important, jpg files are usually used. In fact, Tumblr converts any .png files (without transparent, see-through elements) uploaded to the site to .jpg files, to speed up how fast they load. You may have heard the term “jpg artifact” before and know those are the rainbow squares in low-quality .jpg images, yes? That’s the file compression. Generally, if you’re making an image, you’d want to save an original or a copy you’re going to keep modifying as a .png (because .png files don’t decrease quality), and if you were to make lower quality copies that you probably won’t be editing directly, you’d save them as .jpg files.
So, imagine: what happens if you modify a .jpg in photo editing software, and then “save as” a .jpg that was already a .jpg? Well you’ve just seen what happens: you get more jpg artifacts on top of the jpg artifacts that are already there, because the software can’t tell what is an artifact and isn’t.
That’s what tends to happen with memes that are edited and shared over and over again. They are saved and re-saved as .jpg files because that’s the file type that tends to be favored/uploaded to the web on social media. So the quality goes down over time the more it is shared.
And with a little tweaking, boom! Deep fried meme.
That’s all I have to say! If you want to stop further jpgification, you can always save the image as a .png file. Tumblr will turn it into a jpg again anyway when you post it, but that’s out of your hands.

Hey Idk if ur question was genuine or not but it would impact every user. The site have fanfic monetization and that is illegal. I don’t agree with that but it is. Additionally tumblr isn’t know for being the best about protecting peoples info so a lot people don’t trust tumblr with their credit card info. Also like the people who can actually make money like this are already doing that. Patreon is a thing. I don’t want to buy shit posts from people but my personal feelings aside most people can’t afford this. They may buy a physical thing occasionally but a lot of the content that is actually able to be monetized isn’t compatible or practical on tumblr. Starting with digital/traditional drawing/painting/ art- most people aren’t going to pay for it. There are other artists- tho they may be motivated by nsfw content but you can’t post it here. Or maybe they are motivated by a comic series which if that’s the main thing a person does they are definitely posting it elsewhere bc tumblr can work but other sites are made for it and draw an audience you can monetize(webtoon,tapas, etc). If we are thinking music this website is pointless for that. Very few people want to buy shit posts bc they are everywhere for free plus tumblr isn’t really an influencer platform and many people would like to keep it that way. Then if we are thinking videos- YouTube. Why would you post it here. You can make more money there where there is a bigger audience who wants to watch videos. When it comes to writing anything that isn’t fanfiction well, there is already stuff for that. Cosplayers use other website but may promote a link to a store or a patreon. Overall it does seem pointless and line tumblr staff is trying to get money from us. I don’t care I just see it as pointless with the potential to cause legal problems for users, cause another purge or shut down the site.
illegal monetizing is a problem on every platform, youtube wouldn't exist if it never allowed copyrighted materials to be uploaded, i still don't get the backlash. if it's like you say, and also what i think, this site doesn't have content that people would pay for, then it won't affect people. why the outrage?

Gif Tutorial
I was recently asked for some tips for making gifs, so I thought I’d make a tutorial show how I make mine. I’m using Photoshop CC 2017 for this, but I think the steps should work for most versions of Photoshop. I previously used CS6 Extended but this version has disappeared from my laptop and left me with basic CS6 which I wasn’t able to gif with.
I download my video clips from Youtube or screen record from documentaries/other sources online.
1. First open your Photoshop program and go to File > Open and open the video clip that you have saved.
2. Once you’ve opened your video, you need to make sure the timeline window is open, to do this go to Window > Timeline. If you want to use the clip you’re using to make a single gif, rather than taking clips from a full video, then skip to step 5.
3. To save separate clips from a long video you need to adjust the dials below the time markers. To avoid having a gif that’s too large to upload to tumblr and also too long, I suggest keeping your clips to no more than 6 seconds (this may depend on your clip). You can zoom in closer to the time markers to see a more accurate time including seconds by using the slider tool at the bottom of the timeline window. Sliding towards the smaller mountain zooms out (showing the full clip length as in the screenshot), the bigger mountain zoom in, allowing you to see the seconds and create a more accurate clipping. Use the play button to the left of the window to play through your clip and adjust the dials as you wish.
4. Once you’ve selected the clip you want to use, it’s time to save them. Go to File > Export > Render Video. A new window will open, where you can rename the clip and select a folder to save them to. You can ignore the other options.
You can go back and repeat step 3 and 4 as many times as you like to save the clips you want to gif. Tumblr has a limit of 10 images/gifs per post, but some tutorial and resource pages will show you how to put two gifs on to one canvas so you can upload more than 10 at a time.
5. To start giffing, you need to import those clips you just saved. File > Import > Video Frames to Layers. As mentioned in step 2, if your video clip is short already then you don’t need to go through steps 3-4. Once the next window opens, you need to make sure that ‘Limit to Every 2 frames’ is ticked.
6. When I created my clip using step 3, there were some frames left over from the previous shot which I don’t want in my gif. To get rid of these, just select the frames you don’t want and you can either press the delete/backspace button on your keyboard, or click on the little bin icon. Now that you’ve deleted these frames from the timeline, you need to do the same in the layers window. Be sure not to delete the frame with the eye icon as this is now the first frame of your gif. You may need to have a scroll to the last frames in your clip, to check there aren’t any other excess frames you don’t want. If so, just follow these same steps.
7. Next up we’re going to set the time delay between frames. This will determine how fast or slow your finished gif loops. To do this, you need to select all of the frames on your timeline, and click on the arrow next to the number shown (typically defaults at 0.04). The seconds shown in the list will make your gif run super slow - this is the delay between each frame, so if you select 5.0 there will be a five second delay between one frame and another. So, to choose your own time, select ‘Other’. For me, unless my chosen clip is super short where I might want it to loop a lot more slowly, I try to have my gifs play in as close to ‘real time’ as I can. I set my delay at 0.06 seconds and adjust it later on if needed. You can always press the play button and see how your gif runs, but this isn’t usually an accurate playback speed.
8. Once you’ve done this, you need to highlight all of the frames in the timeline window and all of the layers in the layer window. Next, click on the button that looks like three lines, on the right side of the timeline window and select ‘Convert to Video Timeline’. Then, in the layers window, right click one of the layers and select ‘Convert to Smart Object’. This will compress all of the layers into one, but will still be playable.
9. Now we’re going to crop your gif. First, you might want an idea of how what kind of layout you want for your gifs - this will depend on how many gifs per set you want. If you’re just making one gif, then set your crop with to 500px and your height to whatever works best (250, 300, 500 etc). Two gifs per set (if you want them side by side) need a width of 245px, three gifs side by side need a width of 160px. Before you crop, you should make sure that on the top bar ‘Delete Cropped Pixels’ is unticked. This will allow you to move your frame and re-crop the area.
10. Once you’re happy with your cropped area, it’s time to make some adjustments. For my gif, I want it to have a width of 245px and a height of 300px. To change the size of your image you need to go to the top menu bar and select Image > Image Size. Make sure the measurements are set to pixels. Next we need to sharpen the image, so we go to Filter > Sharpen > Smart Sharpen. I always have mine set to 500% for the Amount, 0.3px for the Radius. In CS6, Smart Sharpen didn’t have an option to reduce noise, so I just set this to 100% as this seemed to work best for the quality. It helps if you have Preview ticked, so you can see how the adjustments affect your image.
11. Now it’s time to start applying filters! To keep everything together in one place, you’ll want to create a new group so click on the little folder icon at the bottom of the layers window. Then click on the round icon to the left of it - here are your adjustment options. Have a play around with these and see which ones work best for you. Click on the eye symbol next to the adjustment layer will turn the layer visibility off, so you can see the effect it has on your image and see if you need to make any changes.
I tend to edit all of my gifs in the same style, the only difference being the options I use for black and white gifs, and those for colour. My basic go-to adjustments are Brightness/Contrast, Levels, Selective Colour (W/N/B for B&W, all colours for coloured gifs). To create a level tone for my B&W gifs, I apply a Gradient Map, fading from black into a very light grey. Colour gifs - I play around with Vibrance, Hue/Saturation and Colour Balance. It doesn’t hurt to play through your gif while you’re editing, to see if the settings your using work for all frames and not just the cover.
12. Once you’re happy with your gif, we need to save that masterpiece. Go to File > Export > Save for Web (Legacy). Some version of PS might just say ‘Save for Web’. In the next window, the only thing you need to do is select ‘Forever’ in the Looping Options drop down menu. Here, you can also check the size of your gif and make sure it’s below the 3MB limit. If it’s over, then you may need to go back and cut the length of your clip a little by adjusting the sliders in the same way as in step 3. If it’s a tiny bit over the limit, shaving a second or two off of your clip should be enough. If it’s over by a lot then you may need to split your gif into two. Again, following step 3, you can simply adjust the sliders to split the timeline into two sections. Once you’ve done this try saving again and check the size. When you’re happy, all you need to do is click Save and you’re done! You’ll need to do this for every clip you want to gif. The more you gif, the easier it’ll become and you’ll find your own rhythm where it may take only a few minutes to make one gif.
As mentioned earlier, if your final gif playback is too fast/slow all you need to do is drag and drop the finished gif back into PS and adjust the time delay as per step 7. You can change this and save it again as many times as you like until it’s right for you.
** TIP ** Never close your tab window until you’re 100% happy with your gif, to the point that you’ve uploaded it. If you’ve noticed a mistake or a problem with your gif this allows you to go back and edit it without having to start over again. Also you can save your work in progress as a PDF at anytime. Trust me, there’s been many a time where I’ve closed my window and had to start again if there’s been a mistake.

What can the comic be about?
Literally anything (as long as it’s not nsfw and not clearly illegal.) You can draw things that you THINK will happen or things that you WANT to happen, or whatever! You can draw AU on top of AU (for example, Canon!Steven and White!Steven meeting.) You can draw the future, or the past.
Can I draw comics that include my OCs?
Yeah, sure, go for it. But please make sure that the comic you create will have at least 10% of WhiteDiamond!Steven AU stuff in it. Otherwise that’s not much of a guest comic.
How long should the comics be?
Preferably there should be at least 3 panels. The upper limit doesn’t exist, but don’t tire yourself out!
What size does the comic have to be?
The ideal width is 800px, and the ideal length is between 800 and 1600px. If you send me something bigger, there’s a good chance I’ll resize it anyway, so please keep to this size to save me some time.
What time should I do this by?
There’s no time limit, but I can’t promise that comics submitted AFTER January 21st 2019, will be posted. If they will be, it’ll probably be later, during other intermissions.
I can’t do a comic. Can I submit fanart or cosplay, or a lil’ animation?

Hello there! Mod here. It’s time to (for the second? third time this year?) bring Ask Movie Slate back to some sort of activity.
You can find a rather long-winded and wordy explanation after the break.
TL;DR Version: There’s more than a handful of updates done and ready, but it’s all about multi-platform sharing and planning at this moment. I will also start posting Work in Progress collections here from this moment on.
It seems that the Ask Pony Blog scene has changed quite a lot over the past half a year. This is something I’ve expected to happen with the current iteration of My Little Pony coming to an end. Many of the blogs have shut down, or have come to an end.
To me, and from the perspective of an Ask Blog, the fact that the source material is finally getting its ending isn’t enough of a reason for me to stop doing what I like. There’s no way Movie Slate will stop, even if this time it felt like she did. Especially after that “Man on the Moon” update that a few of you thought was the actual end of the blog.
Ask Blogs are weird. You don’t really have control over it, except you 100% do, but an ask blog is only as good as the asks it gets, and believe me when I say I have enough movie suggestions stored that I could be reviewing a different movie every week and have enough material for two decades. You guys haven’t failed to support the blog, and without a question you make Movie Slate what it is today.
I am a very lucky person to have been doing this for seven years and still have the drive and the interest to do it. And that’s in big part thanks to the fact that Movie Slate’s blog has never had a big amount of followers. The blog is seven years old (about to hit eight) and it’s never gotten past 5k followers. But this made things way better, as less pressure was on me. I’ve seen blogs with literally tens of thousands of followers peter out and disappear into the aether, and when I asked their mods about it they usually say “Too many people, man, it’s too much”. So small risk and a small audience means I can get away with more things, which quite frankly I have. “The Shape of Water” update very much comes to mind. I’m shocked that thing is still up on Tumblr!
But audience size has no impact on whether or not the blog will still be around. I don’t care how many people follow the blog, but how much those who follow the blog care for it. And holyshit, you guys care for Movie Slate a lot. And I mean a lot. You guys have done fanart of her, you’ve done actual updates. You’ve given me plushies, and miniatures, and crafts of her. I’ve gotten doodles at conventions and sent in the mail! You looked at my silly pointy horse with celluloid hair and went “Yes, I want to do something with her in it” and it was wonderful. And all of this from a relatively small, not-all-that-well-known blog on the internet. It feels like being in a desert island but one that gets constant supplies, and has a nice house, and several friends that drop by every now and then. So it’s actually a pretty nice island to stay on even though 99% of the world doesn’t know you’re there.
So there’s no way I will ever stop updating Movie Slate. I would never do that to any of you guys. I don’t care if the activity drops to only 1 or 2 notes per post. I don’t care if the follower count never gets bigger than what it currently is. I don’t care about any of that. I only care about how much fun you guys are having, and how much fun I am having doing this. And so far there’s been no downside. The only issue is how slow updates have been posted here, and that’s where the rub lies.
I currently am sitting on four weeks worth of updates, plus several smaller updates that form a couple of Monthly Events. These have been done for a while already, and the only reason why they haven’t been uploaded is most related to time constrains. It’s not just about drawing the art, but about posting the art, writing the description, queuing it up, then sharing it everywhere (I post to Tumblr, Twitter, Pinterest, and DeviantArt), and then setting up the time zone reblogs (and also sending it to Equestria Daily and all the DeviantArt groups). This is why I got @charonib on board, and he’s been helping me a lot doing the sharing, saving me literally hours in the process.
So now that things are settling in, and the scene of the Ask Blog is becoming a bit more clear, I can say that Movie Slate will always be around. I have zero intentions to ever stop updating her blog. Sometimes there will be updates every week, other times there will be droughts like the current one. But I have no reason to stop doing what I like doing.
However, I will be bringing a new change to the blog, and that is the WiP posts. I will be sharing more Work in Progress collections in the future, as to show you guys what is currently being worked on and the stage at which each future update is. I thought it’d be a fun way to show you my thought process and to also involve you in on it. I don’t know how frequent these will be, but with the way that Tumblr has become I say expect them rather regularly. See it as the extra features on a DVD that you get along with the movie.
It’s been a long road, and I say there’s more road to walk on, so let’s keep on. Thank you so much for allowing me to do what I do. You guys are the absolute best.

8x06: Identity and Sigils, The Three Eyed Raven and King Bran

This is in response to @dr-doomsduck ‘s post
I noticed the Raven sigil and I’m honestly not sure exactly how I feel about it. On one hand, there’s all of the pride for Bran, and this feeling of coming into his own. However, when you look at the surviving Starklings, their journey has been a process of identity conflict and reclamation, but Bran adopting the Raven sigil breaks the trend of the other Stark children. Jon and Bran are the most similar in their mentor-apprentice relationships as both of them embraced their mentors’ teachings as opposed to Arya and Sansa, who modified the “curriculum” to adhere to Stark morals and teachings.
When you look at the whole brood, when they’re ultimately faced with the decision of cloaking or adopting another sigil (as a form of concealment or denial), every single one of them has picked Stark. The only exception would be Theon (who is an honorary Starkling), but even though he donned his Kraken and fought alongside his sister, he still died for the Wolves.
Jon, who was trained by a Bear (and adopted those teachings and integrated them into his Stark-ness), was put into the position of refuting the Wolf sigil only once (although his time with the Wildlings put him in crisis in terms of his Night’s Watch oath, it never required him to strip himself of his Stark identity). I’ve discussed before how the death of Rhaegal indicated his inability to adopt a Targaryen identity, but the other part of it is his process of being susceptible to Targ indoctrination via Dany. There was a brief opportunity for Jon to be vulnerable enough to be sucked into the “fire and blood” teachings, but ultimately it just wasn’t there. He refuted Dany as a potential “mentor” for fostering the Targaryen identity, and thus there was no hope of the Dragon developing within Jon.
When Sansa was in King’s Landing, her colour changed to mauve (the melding of Lannister crimson and the blue tones of the North) and the lion began to appear in her costume decisions. Although the lion overtook the wolf in terms of visible sigils, her Northern roots never disappeared, but rather integrated into her Southern influence for strategic cloaking. When she left King’s Landing, Sansa’s clothes began to mimic Littlefinger’s in terms of colouring and cut--her infamous “Dark Sansa” dress integrated feathers into the decor, as Littlefinger’s sigil is the mockingbird. When she escapes Ramsay’s captivity, her dress is grey, and her cloak is unassuming. It’s not until she rides south with Jon to rally the northern houses that she completely reclaims the Stark fashion, and we finally see her don the Direwolf for the first time in the series. (Season 6)
As Arya is in the Riverlands, after escaping King’s Landing in season 1, she’s completely stripped of her Stark and highborn identity. In Braavos, she’s forced to abandon all things Arya Stark, but she can’t part with Needle. She dons the clothing of the House of Black and white and begins her training. In the end, though, she refutes the teachings of her mentor. When given the opportunity to become “no one,” Arya tells Jaqen to fuck right off--”A girl is Arya Stark.” Bran, on the other hand, completely adopts all teachings from the Three Eyed Raven.
This whole thing may seem moot, because I’m ultimately arriving to the point which the character himself has been pushing onto us for the last two seasons and Meera confirmed in season 7–“You died in that cave.” Bran has been saying, “I’m not Bran Stark anymore.”
Some theorists say that Bran has become a vessel for Bloodraven—but book readers know that the “three eyed raven” (at face value) is much closer to a collective conscience. The parallel that I’ve drawn for people in the past is much like an AI, where the singular conscience becomes a node in the collective once it’s integrated into the “system” aka Weirwood net (or, weirwood.net). Bran Stark the individual disappeared once he uploaded to the collective.
This is why I’m having a very hard time being happy for “Bran”—and a very critical issue that I have with his kingship. Because... this isn’t Bran. This is the Three Eyed Raven. We don’t have any information to suggest that the Three Eyed Raven has been particularly ambitious in the past, but it’s now integrated into two high-profile and highly magical bloodlines (Stark and Targaryen.
The narrative also proposes that the Three Eyed Raven has been attuned to the possible timelines, and has been slowly adjusting course to eventually end up in a seat of power. **I’m asserting this based on our understanding from the show, not the books.
The Three Eyed Raven has been saying things to make itself as unassuming and non-threatening as possible, even going so far as to adopt the consciousness of Brandon Stark—who was already paralyzed when the Three Eyed Raven first started appearing to him. We know that the Three Eyed Raven has been appearing in childrens’ dreams for a long time, as it’s stated in the books that the Raven appeared to Euron Greyjoy as a child, but didn’t appear to Bran until after his fall. Was Bran’s disability a deciding factor to him being chosen as the successor?
In Bran’s first raven dream, he sees the corpses of all of the children that “couldn’t fly.” It’s hard to say if these corpses represent physically murdered children, or if they’re more likely to represent a death in the subconscious—the “death” that would leave those people susceptible to madness. Was Euron as a child one of the broken bodies in Bran’s Raven dreams? Moreover, the Raven dreams are very triggering for Bran--the Three Eyed Raven (Three Eyed Crow in the books) is a very sinister entity, and continues to make Bran relive his trauma every time. Bran refers to the Raven dreams as his “falling dreams.”
@sayruq wrote a post, citing book quotes, as to why Tyrion providing the moniker of “Bran the Broken” completely goes against Bran’s character and monumentalizes one of Bran’s greatest sources of internal pain in the books. He laments being “broken.”
My initial thought on the matter was that it was just shitty writing, and the point of it was supposed to illustrate that Bran has reclaimed his identity as a paraplegic—much like Sansa’s dialogue was likely meant to illustrate her reclaiming her identity as a trauma survivor. The more I thought about it,though, the more I pieced together that “Bran the Broken” was a moniker that doesn’t go against Bran’s character because it’s not Bran anymore. It’s the Three Eyed Raven, who doesn’t have the same relationship to the word that was very triggering to Bran Stark.
The Three Eyed Raven has gone to great lengths to make themself seem as innocuous as possible with statements like, “I don’t really want anymore” and “I can never be the Lord of anything,” and integrating with a paraplegic boy. Moreover, before the Battle for Winterfell, the Three Eyed Raven even said that he “didn’t know” if their plan would work, even though we have other reasons to believe that they can see the future. They tipped their hand with the line, “Why do you think I came all this way?” So, yes, in some way, the Three Eyed Raven understood that becoming King was a possible outcome of the Great War, and maneuvered in such a way that they were in the ultimate seat of power.
Allowing the North to secede was likely of little consequence to them because there’s bigger things at play--as demonstrated by the Three Eyed Raven’s preoccupation with finding Drogon.
Putting corrupted people in the seats of power only further drives home the point that the Three Eyed Raven in power bodes ill for the people.
Sam is poorly trained despite being one of the most morally “good” characters on the counsel, and even though he’s shown to have the drive to stand up for what’s right, Sam clearly respects the Three Eyed Raven.
Brienne is also a “morally good” character and she’s the Lord Commander of his Kingsguard—because she broke her oath to Sansa—so she has little say over actual matters of state. But the fact that the Three Eyed Raven was able to convince either Brienne or Sansa to break that oath makes me uncomfortable. Not only do we not know how it happened, but the end result is that Sansa is alone in the North—she doesn’t have a single loyal and true adviser at the beginning of her reign.
Tyrion is not a good person, and will likely be easy to control as Tyrion has also showed great respect for them—even so far as to personally nominate them for King.
Lastly, I’ll refer to the part that bothered me most about the Small Council scene. As Bran is leaving, every member stands at attention and after Tyrion proclaims, “We serve at the pleasure of Bran the Broken...” everyone attempts to synchronize “Long may he reign!” and Tyrion says, “That will improve.” Implying that this proclamation will happen every time the Three Eyed Raven leaves the room. Formality is expected for a monarch, but we didn’t even see that level of regime-quality salute in the presence of Dany as she emerged to be a dictator.
So, yeah, tl;dr I think that Bran adopting the Raven sigil for his kingsguard is way, way more deeply encoded than at first glance.

hellooooo friends!! Happy belated Valentine’s Day!
I had wanted to share a few one-shots for my tumblr valentines earlier this week, but after getting swamped with a paper and a surprise fever, I realized I would not be posting anything in time for the day of hearts :( That said, I still have some gifts to upload so I’ll be staggering these out over the next few days in celebration of my favorite ships and my favorite people on this website and in this fandom.
So, without further ado, my first Valentine goes to @fireflyxrebel , without whom my starx fics + writing presence here would not have existed. Thanks for always being down to chat, Ava, and being the sweetest + most supportive mom friend ever. You’re an astoundingly beautiful, creative, TALENTED human. Love you lots!

It wasn’t until they had crossed the threshold, their limbs entangled as they landed on the bed, her veil askew and his dress shirt half-unbuttoned, that they realized what they had done.
“Wife,” Gar whispered, nuzzling her neck sweetly. He curled his body around hers, breathing a sigh of relief as they sank into the soft duvet of their bed.
“It doesn’t feel real, does it?” She mused, studying the silver band on her finger with wide eyes, “after everything that’s happened, I didn’t know if things would ever work.”
He chuckled and pressed a gentle kiss to her temple.
“You had doubts?”
“You didn’t?”
“Well, I wasn’t sure if you’d make it all the way down the aisle and still say yes.”
She elbowed him sharply, rolling her eyes.
“Careful, it’s not too late to get an annulment.”
“You’d just do it all over again in two months like we planned,” he said cheekily.
Raven smiled, raising her hands to cup his face.
“Yeah,” she agreed, “you’re probably right about that.”
Her cheeks were pink when she leaned in, brushing her lips against his teasingly. He whimpered when she pulled away, catching her palm and pressing his mouth against it, watching her with dark eyes.
“Help me get ready for bed?”
The desire that had pooled in his stomach gave way to pure adoration. He nodded and clambered off the bed, bounding over to her side and scooping her up into his arms.
She suppressed a giggle and wrapped her arms around his neck, allowing him to carry her to the bathroom.
Gar flicked on the light and whistled, admiring the polished marble and crystalline glow that filled the room.
“Not bad for a shotgun wedding, huh?”
“We owe Kori big time, you know. She was ready to cry when I told her we wanted to elope early.”
“I’m surprised she didn’t follow us here.”
Raven snorted, patting his chest to let her down, “Believe me, she tried. I had to remind her several times that we would still be having a formal ceremony in December. This was her compromise - she insisted on booking the most expensive honeymoon suite in Vegas in exchange for her silence. I have no idea how she’s going to explain that gap in their finances to Dick.”
“Best sister ever,” Gar commented affectionately, nipping his wife’s ear, “okay, where do we start?”
She touched the top of her head and frowned, wrapping her fingers around the band of the veil that was half-attached to her hair.
“There are some pins here that you could take out. And then start on the buttons on the back of my dress? I can take the choker off myself.”
“Sure.”
Her hands went to the clasp of the white ribbon around her neck while his combed through her hair, unpinning the purple waves that were contained beneath the sheer fabric. He glanced around the bathroom, his gaze landing on the massive claw-foot tub that sat a few feet away from them.
“Hey, Rae, how does a bath sound?” He murmured, sliding the veil off of her head and placing it beside the sink.
“Bubbles and all?”
“I’m on it, can you finish your dress by yourself?”
She nodded, smiling at his reflection in the mirror.
“Just undo the first few buttons and I can do the rest.”
He took his time with them, not missing the opportunity to press his fingers against her bared skin. Her eyes fluttered shut while he did so, her mouth falling open when his breath warmed her flesh.
“Don’t get distracted,” she warned.
“Me? I would never,” he teased, pressing a kiss to the back of her neck before seating himself on the edge of the tub. He turned on the faucet and placed his fingers beneath the flowing water absentmindedly, his attention fixed on her.
Gar spent more than his fair share of time wondering how he’d been so lucky. How, after years of fighting and facing the worst of the world, he had wound up tasting heaven and claiming a piece of it for himself. Moreover, allowing himself to be taken time and time again by its allure, ferocity, and wit.
Even in the weeks leading up to their wedding, a tiny part of him was certain it wouldn’t happen. It couldn’t happen. Arella would withdraw her blessing. Steve and Rita would blow them off in favor of a mission that required their immediate assistance. Something would get in the way. And as the first ceremony neared, Gar began to panic.
On the sixteenth of October, two full months before their scheduled trip to Azarath and the subsequent white wedding they had planned to host in Jump, Gar asked Raven to marry him again.
She had only raised an eyebrow, shutting the novel in her lap and setting it aside on her bed.
“I feel like we already had this conversation.”
“I mean, now. Like, now, now.”
She pursed her lips.
“What about the actual wedding?”
Gar shook his head, bouncing with excitement.
“Don’t you see? None of that stuff matters, Rae, not when we have each other, not when we want to get married and we’re ready to do it.”
Raven crossed her arms, eyeing him suspiciously.
“Okay, what’s wrong with you? I thought you were excited about doing a bigger thing. The whole Doom Patrol promised to be there, everyone in the Network is showing up, Vic’s been planning the ‘bachelor party of the century’ for ages. My mom’s even convinced the Head Priestess to let us bring the others to Azarath for our binding. We can’t just cancel on these people, Gar.”
“Is there something so wrong with me wanting to be with you for the rest of my life as soon as possible?”
She scowled.
“What is this, do you think we’re going to call it quits five minutes before or something? I planned on being with you for the rest of my life the moment I said yes to you. Isn’t that enough?”
“If words were enough, I wouldn’t have proposed at all.” He snapped, running a hand through his hair.
“Okay,” Raven said sharply, rising from her seat, “I don’t want this to go any further. We aren’t fighting about this. So you can either tell me why you suddenly want to elope or you can walk away from this conversation, and we can pretend it didn’t happen.”
Gar squeezed his eyes shut and sighed tiredly, rubbing the side of his face.
“Sorry. That was too far, I didn’t mean it like that.”
“I know.”
“You know I love you more than anything in the world.”
“I know that too.”
“I just, ah, I guess I’ve been waiting for something to go wrong,” he confessed, fidgeting nervously, “Vic and Sarah had to postpone their wedding twice because things came up. Kori almost died three weeks before her bachelorette party and Dick broke six bones saving someone else on their honeymoon. I’m so fucking tired of being afraid, Rae. I don’t want to lose you. I don’t want anything to get in the way. I just want you to be my wife.”
Her glare softened immediately and she stepped forward, circling her arms around his waist and pressing her cheek to his chest.
“I’ve been picking up waves of concern from you for weeks,” she confessed, “I just didn’t know if you wanted to talk about it. I’m sorry, Gar.”
He dropped a kiss on her head, rubbing her back soothingly.
“I got defensive. I shut you out. That’s my fault, not yours. But I still want to get married, right now.”
“Gar -”
“We don’t have to cancel our other plans, Rae, nothing needs to change! We can sneak off to Vegas tonight and get hitched and nobody would even need to know -”
She rolled her eyes, snuggling into his form.
“Bold of you to assume Kori wouldn’t find out.”
“- about us at the end of the day, right? I just want to be married to you. I want to call you my wife. No matter what goes wrong tomorrow or next week or the night before our marriage.”
“Okay.”
“So I don’t see why we can’t - wait, what?” Gar blinked and gripped her arms, pulling her away from him to study her face, “You mean it? We can go?”
She smiled and touched his cheek.
“I love you, Gar. I would never say no to marrying you, no matter when you had asked. I just didn’t want you to make a choice you couldn’t defend.”
“So...we’re getting married? Tonight?”
Raven nodded, gazing into his bright eyes.
“Let me talk to Kori and see if she can cover for us. Go ahead and pack some stuff together.”
He morphed into a wolf and let out a loud howl, bounding around her excitedly before knocking her to the ground and licking her face enthusiastically.
“Down - boy,” she managed between laughs, scratching behind his ears. She rubbed her cheek against his affectionately and rose from the ground, adjusting her cloak and heading into the hallway.
It would be a few days before they managed to slip away, having obtained permission and “the essentials that you must take with you if you wish for me to keep your secret!” that were so lovingly bestowed upon them by their dear sister. But in the end, it was absolutely worth it.
“GAR.”
A loud shriek from Raven broke him out of his reverie, drawing his attention to the scalding water that was burning his hand. Gar yelped and pulled his hand away immediately, wincing at the stinging sensation on his reddened skin.
“Idiot,” Raven scolded, taking his hand in hers tenderly. She clasped her cool fingers around it and closed her eyes, breathing deeply.
“Azarath Metrion Zinthos.”
A gentle trickling washed over the injury, soothing it until the pain had faded to a faint tingling.
“Thanks, babe. My bad.”
“Go and change out of your suit, I’ll finish making up our bath,” she ordered, shaking her head.
He obeyed immediately, loosening his tie and placing it with the growing pile of her discarded accessories. His suit jacket, dress shirt, and undershirt landed in a crumpled heap on the floor, his dress pants and socks following soon after. A fluffy robe hung invitingly beside the bathroom door and he couldn’t resist slipping into it.
“Done,” he chirped, approaching his new wife, who was also swathed in a fluffy robe identical to his.
She smiled up at him, drawing her fingers out of the tub and shaking them dry.
“It’s almost ready, though I’m tempted to just curl up in bed wearing these.”
“The goal is to get naked, not bundle up.”
“Maybe your goal is to get naked,” she shot back, “but mine is to be cozy.”
He grinned.
“We can get cozy and naked. Let me warm you up -”
“Oh look, the bath is full,” Raven said airily, smirking when his ears drooped, “I’ll add the bubbles, you can light the candles.”
“Do you plan on teasing me all night or...?”
She flashed him a rare grin, her dark eyes glinting mischievously.
“Would I really be your wife if I didn’t?”
Gar pouted and wrapped his arms around her waist, burying his face in her hair.
“I love you.”
“I know.”
“I love you.”
“I know,” she breathed, placing her hands on his and lacing their fingers together.
“We did it. We’re married, Rae.”
His nose sought out her skin, his tongue tracing the shell of her ear slowly. Her dreamy sighs were music to his ears.
The jewel in the center of her forehead flared black for a moment, the lights around them flickering in tandem with each brush of his mouth against her body. A growl rumbled from deep within his chest, the echoes of his inner beast stirring to recognize their mate. She smelled sweet and clean, like a burst of fresh air on the ocean breeze.
“Gar,” she murmured, stepping away from the tub, “wait.”
She pushed him off of her gently, biting her lip as she studied him in the soft lighting. His eyes were a warm, dark, emerald shade of green, filled with desire and happiness and longing. His shoulders had broadened in the last few years, complementing his added height and sharpened jaw. But beneath the figure of a man, she could feel the same boy who had called her weird while never truly minding her weirdness. His heartbeat always quickened at her touch. His gaze always brightened. His ears always twitched.
“I love you too,” she whispered, slowly loosening the belt around his waist and pushing the robe off his shoulders. She turned her head, and he followed her gaze, promptly stripping out of his boxers and climbing into the tub. Slowly, with a quiet hesitancy he hadn’t witnessed in a long time, she raised her hand, sending black flashes of energy to each candle that had been placed in the bathroom. Her eyes glowed, and the dimmer on the light switch lowered, leaving them in darkness lit only by gentle flares.
He watched unashamedly as the robe slipped from her form, revealing a band of dark blue lace that hugged her breasts and hips tightly. A strip of white lace sat high on her thigh, looking strikingly bright against the smooth grey of her skin.
“Something borrowed and something blue,” Raven said shyly, “I figured we could keep things a little traditional.”
“Yeah,” Gar replied, mouth going dry at the sight of his near-naked wife in the candlelight, “Something old and something new?”
She neared the edge of the tub, bracing herself with his shoulder and climbing in.
“The necklace was my mother’s. I’ll wear it again in December. As for the new...”, she stroked his hair gently, “I plan to keep my new husband on my body for the rest of the night. That counts, right?”
“Works for me,” he mumbled, running his hands up her legs.
“Careful with the garter, that’s borrowed. Feel free to tear into the underwear as you please.”
She stood before him, sighing with delight when he gripped her hips and pressed a kiss against the curve of her waist. He hooked his fingers beneath the garter and slid it down her leg slowly, tossing it in the direction of his discarded clothes before focusing on the dark lace that curved around her ass.
“Hell yes,” he hissed, nipping at the seams with his teeth.
Bathwater splashed over the edge as his enthusiasm overcame him. She giggled and thrashed in his hold, her laughter turned to breathless moans and pants and cries, some of which were so animalistic they rivaled his own. Waves rode out into a quiet stillness until there was only her body and his, two pieces wrapped together to form a whole. He stroked her skin gently, lavishing the parts that had been darkened by his relentless mouth. They toweled off and drained the tub, wrapped in their fluffy robes once more, and snuggled into their bed, rejoining their bodies over and over again.
When morning came, it was to bring forward the two lovers into the life they truly deserved.
