Crank Dat City (2016)

Season 4 Episode 2 Featured on: Sensational Celebrations ~ The SiIvaSummer All​-​Star Festival Collection [Event Side]

Hot off the heels of covering his magnum opus, the next rip in line just so happened to be one requested by minindo himself, one that I'd somehow never heard before. That did genuinely surprise me, because it was effectively the grand finale to one of my favorite surprise mini-events: the celebration for Dat Boi! Remember him? Remember Koopa Street? Yeah, after a whole day of remembering this dumb meme from such a strange period of the internet, it was all wrapped up with Crank Dat City (2016).

Funny enough, this is actually the second rip of Crisis City from Sonic 06 I've covered, after THIS. IS. SOLEANNA. I think the strength of both rips is evident from just the first few seconds of listening - the prominence of the song's lead synth makes any replacement or addition to it way funnier as a result. In THIS. IS. SOLEANNA that was done to replicate the style of Sparta Remixes, and a month therafter Crank Dat City (2016) builds on it in the most natural way possible - Dat Boi's smashing steel drums setting the stage for a very funny rip right off the bat. Yet the rip doesn't ever settle into a groove, for as funny as that bit alone is. We've got segments of odd jokes from all over internet culture featured here, including a surprise appearance of Goomba Got Back before its hit album release in Season 7, a hint of letting the Bodies hit the floor, a segment with Big Shaq's Man's Not Hot...

Its hard to draw much of a throughline with these jokes, but if there was to be one...I feel like most of them fall into the category of feeling "forgotten" about, in that they're well past their prime time of being considered funny. Bodies was, much like Paralyzer of YACKER TOILET fame, an icon of the old internet, yet one that seems to have been left behind by the passage of time - similarly, Goomba Got Back at one pointed seemed like a...not-terrible and kind of funny way to respond to the criticisms Gaijin Goombah was receiving, but now looks incredibly immature and bizarre to look back on in retrospect. The list goes on, but Crank Dat City (2016) doesn't really linger on them too much, far more invested in fun celebration above all else.

Because that's what was so much fun about Season 4 Episode 2's SummerFes, and the Season in general - ironic, genuine, old or new, it was all just one big party lasting for so many weeks of the summer, as such a befitting sendoff to the King for Another Day tournament the year prior. I could try to delve as far into Crank Dat City (2016) as possible, but when push comes to shove - its here for a good time, and succeeds at that in spades.

I feel like TF2 had a really bad time in development hell for a while and the devs are just sick of it at this point. Stuff not working out, not making it to release, and simply put, not wanting to maintain any new ideas.

They had a medieval 2Fort and for the life of me, the only conclusion I can come to is they didn't want to maintain 2 separate experiences for the same game. MvM being a departure they...basically stopped work on eventually too. Hilariously, it being a horde-type game probably being what kept it going, much like with L4D from Counter-Strike.

Feels like alot of stuff at Valve just didn't work for a decade. and I think it's because nobody was forced to finish their work. And unfortunately that's just a simple aspect of creation that not everyone can handle, no restrictions. I imagine this also lead to people who did a lot of work, not getting full credit, or having their ideas superseded by essentially leaches who contributed nothing before, but have Their idea on how it should be.

That also would explain how the FUCK they canceled L4D3. What the fuck company doesn't get that shit finished one way or another? I can appreciate the freedom that Valve allows, but I think THAT should've been the moment an adult spoke up and said "This shit hasn't been working for literal decades."

I heard they stopped having as much freedom, and while on paper it was great, you HAVE to have restrictions in creation. Otherwise nothing gets done, nothing progresses, and nothing really even gets started past the initial planning process. The thing is, all we've seen is the broad end of both spectrums. One that doesn't work enough to get stuff out the door, and one that doesn't work either, but garbage at least gets out the door every week.

I'd like to see Valve just move a bit on that spectrum, not the opposite end in any way, just force people to Finish The Work they started. Like Left 4 Dead 3 for example. I can't imagine most people in the division that grew were happy that some idiots fucked all their work up entirely. I also, would have fired the idiots who wanted to move L4D3 to fuckin' Unreal or whatever. God damn morons don't know what company they're working at. Want to know the answer? You keep it on Source 2 because I wouldn't fucking buy it if it was on another fucking engine. No confidence in your own engine also paints a VERY poor image of literally EVERYTHING about the company, their engine, their work culture, god what an embarrassment.

Seriously though, I think people should probably chill on the "savetf2" stuff. I don't think that's gonna inspire anyone there to work on it anymore. Just kinda...annoy them that they can't say "Guys this was HELL to work on and almost nothing got out the door but cosmetics, failure after failure to get anything else out the door. We're tired, it's nearly been 2 decades. We aren't planning on shutting down servers or anything. Just keep playing if ya want to."

I'd much prefer a TF3 because I'm curious how they'll handle it. But I severely doubt we'll ever see another Valve big name title again. Which sucks shit, but what can ya do. The credit we can give, is outside of taking down TF2 clones they really don't need to take down, is that they at least allow people to do whatever the hell they want with their IPs. Do you think Valve was ever gonna make HL2VR? Honestly. Doubtful. The only reason Half-Life got an update is because of the SteamDeck, otherwise, that update would never have happened. They aren't interested in going back to Source anytime soon, they're jumping to Source 2.

Now there is a possibility they come back to other titles to give it the SteamDeck treatment, but I have high doubts of that either. HL was a blatantly obvious choice and Valve not having it work well for their own hardware is actually unconscionable. L4D is the embodiment of that meme with the skeleton under water, Portal doesn't really need much.

So I put forth a question I've pondered: Why is there even a Valve? It's not called ValveVR, nor ValveDeck, it wasn't a Valve Machine, or Valve controller, and Valve hasn't released a (good/playable) game since the 360 era. An update/total revision for Counter Strike is simply expected when it's their only real game success in years. So, otherwise, why is there even a Valve? Seems like they'd just morph into Steam by now. I also think it'd quell the fires of people wanting more games and updates.

I'd rather them NOT quit making games outright, but...like man, I've been playing L4D since I was at least 12yo, Half-Life since I was 3-4. I've been waiting. They've had the time to tell us what they're doing and thinking, them not telling us, feels like it's because they themselves don't even know or it's a total shit show. But when they do actually know what they're doing, they come out with confidence. Hardware and Steam has been their only confidence in decades. I'd rather have an answer to whether or not these IPs are genuinely dead, than have that carrot hanging in front of me anymore. Sure, I can ignore the carrot, but it's still there.

I think nearly 20 years is enough time for Valve to comment on...just...anything people have questions for anymore. I'm kinda sick of guessing what is even going on over there. This isn't a hate-post or anything, just a grouchy old man yelling at the sky sorta thing you've seen a million times before, just probably on the opposite spectrum of the main discussions. I don't want an update for TF2, I want an update on Valve. Not Steam, not their hardware, not specifically their IPs, Valve themselves, what the hell is going on over there.

How to select a Broker/Advisor

Beth's brother works in the Investment Advisor industry, he's not a broker himself, but he recommended a local broker from his national firm. I liked his recommendation because we wanted the security of using a broker from a large firm. Large firms have sophisticated compliance organizations which monitor the trades of their brokers to ensure they aren't churning (buying and selling excessively to earn fees). The firms also ensure that the brokers are licensed, etc. and the firms have secure, convenient online and mobile tools. If you don't have a relative in the business, ask your friends, your parents, your boss. You might want to ask the firm that manages your company's 401K.

Twenty years ago we met/interviewed the broker who was recommended by Beth's brother and we liked him. More importantly, we felt like we could trust him. He asked about our life goals, tolerance for risk, etc. and we felt like his style could match our style. He was a bit older than us, old enough to have experienced several economic cycles. We weren't looking for a guy who was going to call us once a week with a hot tip. We wanted rational, long term investing of a diversified portfolio which would grow to fund our children's college education and our retirement.

Selecting an investment advisor is a little like choosing a psychic (though I don't believe in psychics). You're looking for an advisor who is smart and successful, but let's face it, if he was really an investing savant, he'd be early-retired, relaxing on a beach or golf course instead of slogging out a 9-5 office job managing other people's money. Likewise, someone who was really psychic would have bought the winning lottery ticket years ago.

As much as anything else, an investment advisor helps keep his/her clients from doing something stupid. Beth and I are a perfect example of a couple who has invested broadly in the market and done well, mostly because we haven't done anything stupid. That's not to say every investment has been a winner, but we've cut those losses when we necessary.

Beth and I also have a very conservative view of what it means to do well with our investments. Frankly we have low expectations. We want to earn a few % points more than inflation over the long term. Ideally our portfolio (after paying the investment advisor's fees) will at least match or even slightly exceed the performance of the broader market, but probably not by much. If we see that the performance of our portfolio is beating the overall market by a lot, we assume there's probably something wrong we should fix - we are probably invested in something which the rest of the market thinks is too risky. Likewise, if our performance is lagging the market, we're probably invested too conservatively. We don't trade options, we don't buy meme stocks and a 'guaranteed return' like Bernie Maddoff would instantly make us suspicious.

Whether you invest through a broker/advisor or you do it yourself, the key, in my opinion, is to have a broad portfolio and never stop saving and investing. Don't try to time the market - i.e. pause your investing because you think the market is weak and instead decide to wait until the market starts to recover. I have no idea what the market is going to do next week or next month or next year. But I'm pretty confident that in 5 years it will be higher than today and 5 years from now I will wish that I'd invested today.

So, for the like 3 of you that maybe have wondered where have I been the last weeks, well, basically playing FF7 Rebirth and chilling on cohost.

Thing is, after the whole tumblr selling our data to train ai models fiasco, I was kinda in shock and decided to leave this place. I uninstalled the app from my phone, did backups of my blogs (which I wasn't gonna delete, just stop uploading), went to cohost and started posting there (it's super chill btw, it's like early tumblr mixed with old twitter, in case you're wondering). All while processing what to do next, because frankly, we've all felt that tumblr is somewhat on decline and seeing all the bad stuff it's CEO has done as of late -including threats of nuking the site this year-, the last few years always felt like there was an invisible countdown on this website all the time.

But still, I'm not gonna pretend I'm not gonna miss it, if not tumblr per se, certainly some of the people I've met here who are my mutuals of many years, many of which I've become friends with. Also, despite everything, I still think this is a good platform for posting art. Cohost has its good things (like being WAY more relaxed about NSFW stuff), but there are more file size restrictions, photosets are limited to fewer pictures, etc. There might be some ways to improve that besides what the staff there is doing, since cohost lets you edit posts in many more ways than tumblr (read somewhere that it was tumblr, but for hornier and more linux savy people), so there's also that.

Anyway, after processing everything that happened, and understanding that one way or another, my art's probably gonna be scraped from the internet nevertheless, even if tumblr offers an opt out option (that doesn't even consider the people that tumblr decides to sell our stuff to, let alone the fact that it also arrived so late that we probably everything was already scraped to begin with) even if I glaze it or whatever, I kinda made peace with what happened. I'm still weary about uploading, or where to do it. Yes, I know that I don't have huge numbers or a distinctive enough style for people to copy, but I also know that, nevertheless, not only my art, but the things I've written, the photos I've taken, etc., all has been fed into that slot machine of generating content. If anything, with the days I've noticed I'm way more angry at techbros as usual, and especially tumblr ceo and part of it's staff -I know that not everyone agrees with him and that there are good people in the staff, but there's also sycophants, professional "yes man"s and the like-.

So, after all that, I thought, well, might as well go back. But the thing is that, after spending a couple of weeks away (and missing the posts I imagine came up here both about the Cerveza Cristal meme and about Toriyama's death, among other things), coming back here has been weird, like, for better or worse, it has lost its appeal. I've read a couple of posts before writing this one and I was like "has it always been like this here?".

So, what now? I have no clue. I don't think I'm gonna download the mobile app again, if anything, I've noticed how much time it consumed to just check tumblr with the frequency I used to, so I don't feel like doing that anymore. I think I might pop up here from time to time, maybe return to live blogging Critical Role and Candela Obscura. Will probably like more stuff than the one I post and reblog. Still deciding if I should post new art stuff here, we'll see.

Longer thoughts on Sonic Prime, now that I've had a few days to sit on it. Under a cut because of length / those who don't care / spoilers / whatever else.

Like I said before, I thought it was fine. It's definitely not a bad show by any stretch and I think that younger kids who are perhaps new to Sonic / only know Sonic from the movies / don't know Sonic at all but want to watch a new cartoon will enjoy it. I can't fully explain why it didn't pull me in. It could be the fact that I binged all of it partly out of obligation because I felt like I had to watch it as soon as possible to avoid spoilers, so I didn't give myself time to just pace through the show normally. But I mean, I've binged other things and loved them (see: season four of The Dragon Prince), so I don't think that's exactly it. I think it's more to do with the writing, but before I talk about that I want to talk about some things I did like about it, first.

The vocal performances were, for the most part, excellent. Knuckles' VA was kind of . . . eh . . . at times, and it's very hard to separate Tails / Nine / etc from Rainbow Dash, but Devon Mack absolutely KILLED IT as Sonic, which is a big deal since Sonic is the main character of the show. I wouldn't mind Devon taking the lead on voicing Sonic in other projects, because he did a very good job. So happy for him, especially since he was a fan of Sonic before landing the gig.

The animation was very good too. I like the little animal quirks the characters were given, such as ear twitches and whatnot, and it was fun to see Sonic so expressive when he's supposed to be an expressive / emotive guy. The action sequences were easy to follow and nicely done too; it's a very fun show to look at, you can tell the animators had a good time with what they were doing.

I noticed some musical callbacks to the games at times that made me, a nerd, pretty happy. There weren't too many of them, but there were enough that it was a "oh hi there" moment when I caught them.

I like how Rouge has been handled for the most part, from her having outfits that are more legitimate outfits to her having little quirks like sleeping like the bat she is. I will say I think she should've been the captain in the pirate saga, but like, whatever, I like that even though she's clearly there so they could have more than one girl in the cast, she's still being treated with respect overall.

Miles "Nine" Prower and Rusty Rose are my beloveds. The rest of the cast I could take or leave, but those two are my morally grey, ruthless babies and I love them so much.

Now for the writing . . . I think my main issue is that, outside of Nine and Rusty, I feel like I haven't been given much reason to care. Like, yeah, Sonic is having a hard time—but Sonic is always having a hard time and he always pulls through so it's like, whatever, he'll be fine. He's been infected with a metal virus, he's been cyber corrupted, he's going to get vivisected in Scrapnik 3 next week, he's always having some kind of issue, and he always ends up fine, so I'm not too invested in that. Insert a variant of the time knife meme like "yeah yeah Sonic having a bad time we've all seen it." Like that just doesn't capture my interest much anymore. Sonic emotionally going through it, mayhaps, but physically? Nah.

But like, where Nine and Rusty have interesting stories and characterization and circumstances to me (Nine being ruthless and morally grey, Rusty potentially gaining her own agency and personhood and hopefully still killing people along the way because she deserves it and I'm here for women's wrongs), I just can't say the same about the others. The Eggman council is just—if I can be unabashedly negative here, I hate the entire concept. It's so cartoonish and stupid. Which, I know this is a cartoon, but for a dystopian universe it feels over the top ridiculous to have a fucking baby and moody teenager and whatever else, not to mention OoC for any version of Eggman to want to share power with anyone, even other versions of himself. And "Mr" and "Dr" are both prefixes (with "Dr" denoting more respect than "Mr") so to have them layered as "Mr Dr Eggman" is just so stupid and irritating—

But I digress.

So I don't care about the Eggman council, and despite spending more time with them I don't see enough depth or potential for rebel Rouge and rebel Knuckles to really care too much about them either. Putting aside my irritation at jungle Tails being called "mangey" even though he doesn't have mange (mange is an actual skin disorder in animals and he clearly doesn't have it, just call him FERAL, that's what he ACTUALLY IS), I felt the jungle episodes were just kind of a slog to get through even though watching Amy yeet the others out of the forest with her hammer was pretty funny. (although, missed opportunity calling her Thorn instead of Briar, you know, like Briar Rose.) It's not helped by the fact that we only spent two episodes there, so there's not time to give more depth to the characters—but with two episodes already feeling like a slog, more might've been worse? It's hard to say. And with the pirate episodes, again, they didn't really get my attention until Rusty showed up. That's when things got more interesting, for me. Otherwise, I just didn't feel much of a reason to care about these variants. It seems to be much less "here's how these characters naturally would have developed in these circumstances" and more "hehe hoho fun costumes yay :)" with Nine and Rusty being the exceptions to that rule.

A lot of this has to do with the fact that, I'm not the target audience for this show. Yes, I'm a Sonic fan—but this is a show that's clearly intended for a younger audience, one that's perhaps not that interested in Sonic lore, and that's fine! Not everything is going to be for me. I am not a fan of the Archie comics, for example, from what little I know of them. I'm not interested in Sonic X. I think SatAM is overrated, so on and so forth. I do enjoy the movies for what they are, but mostly because a.) I'm glad they weren't a trash fire, and b.) I am ALWAYS going to be drawn in by found family of any type for reasons relating to being raised on AoStH and also my own messed up childhood / adolescence. But I don't have to love every single piece of Sonic media just because I'm a Sonic fan. As I've said, the great thing about Sonic is that there's something for everyone. Prime isn't really for me (outside of Nine and Rusty), and that's OK. I'm cool with that.

But that said, I do think that there are places where the writing could be improved. There are places where the dialogue feels clunky (as in, "people don't talk like this"). There are names of variants I take issue with. And I think that if a bit more thought was put into WHY the characters are the way they are other than "jungle people" or "pirates" it would be better. But little kids aren't going to care about that, and little kids are the ones this show is for, so again. It's not a big deal. And at the end of the day it's not something I'm going to lose sleep over.

I will probably still watch season two, just so I can see how Nine and Rusty develop. If they weren't in the show, I probably wouldn't bother lol. But since they are, I will Do It For Them. Nine and Rusty, my beloveds.

But yeah, those are my thoughts. It's OK. Not really my thing, but I don't hate it either. Would take a whole spinoff about Nine and Rusty, though. Let Nine say fuck. Let Rusty murder. It's what they deserve.

Marigold doesn't really... have a favorite food. She eats what she needs to keep her body running - her current chub is genetics, not any tell of her ability to actually remember to eat. She can cook, of course - alchemy is very similar to cooking, the same as cooking is applied chemistry. She just... eats when she remembers to. She mostly keeps recipes so that she can serve them to other people.

If you tell her your favorite food, she'll remember it, and probably put in the effort to learn the recipe if she has the time. She'll bring an amazing curry to the potluck, she'll cook some incredible pudding for the family reunion dinner, she just doesn't have that strong of a taste for food herself. She thinks about it most when she's comparing tastes to disguise something in a dish. Tends to lean towards floral tastes.

For her best memory... well, there are a lot of options, really. She's lived a fairly positive life! We could go for a birthday, a hatching of a cousin, any of her personal favorite contracts - but the best would be her official acceptance for her alchemical licence, we think.

Marigold apprenticed for around five years before applying for an official licence, which is required to practice Charmcraft in Defiant Root and the Ant Kingdom area. Considering that fucking up a charm can absolutely get someone dead, it's pretty damn difficult to get one's claws on, and even bugs with extremely well-known references can have difficulty gett. Charmcraft tends to pay well, once you're a licensed smith, but it's by no means easy to get that licence.

Submitting the paperwork, dotting all the is and crossing all the ts, the entire application process was nerve-wracking - once you've failed once, it's two years before you can apply again, and she'd already had an application denied once on some relatively minor issues - it was a long, long few weeks of checking the post before she was officially accepted, and when she actually received the certificate, she wound up excited enough that nearly everyone she talked to for a week afterwards heard about it. She still remembers it fondly, years later.

For worst memory - we've actually already done that, but we'll add another one! Her worst memory, by long-term negative impact, would probably be when her mentor told her that the safest method of disposing of charms that work out bad is by eating them. The idea of doing this still makes her cringe. Kaycee made her a firm believer in lab safety simply by example of what happens when you Don't Do That.

i picked up some extra shifts for the upcoming week (a note on that below the cut) so i will likely be a bit scarce until ~friday or saturday. i have personal training every friday and sometimes i come back pumped, sometimes i come back exhausted. with the work week i have ahead of me, it might be an exhausted one, but the muse might win. we'll see.

a note on my portrayal of aerith.

it states i am full exclusive with @architectofhope's reeve. now, any of you blessed enough to have known hmr when they were in the ff fandom will understand, but those of you who are new or did not get the chance to interact with them - their portrayal of reeve is so thorough an incredible. they helped me develop aerith to a level i could never imagine, and they've become a very dear friend to me as well. they pushed me to be a better writer, and i strive every day to keep at a level i had when i was writing against them. hmr is on a hiatus from the fandom (and even if they never return, this stands) at present but the amount of love, attention, and chatting we've done between her reeve and aerith is unreal. so even if hmr's hiatus remains indefinite and moves to permanent, for the effort and adoration they've put into helping me build my aerith over time, they will remain full exclusive.

they also wrote a rufus (@controlthroughfear) which started out as a hilarious sinday meme between their ru and i (then the friendship was formed). i have that they are ship exclusive with me, however, hmr's interpretation of ru is so vastly different from others on the site that with chemistry and through time i am open to other ships (this doesn't mean romantic necessarily). i love rufus as a muse, and i am very excited to write out his dynamic with aerith in any form. as such, the status of exclusivity may lightly open up in the future.

i am recovering from covid.

i had it the week before christmas, through christmas, and tested negative on new years eve. i am still suffering from long covid and it's making me exhausted, forgetful & sluggish overall. the worst is the brain fog. if i forget something please gently remind me. i am also slow. the long covid is fucking so badly with my sleep schedule that sometimes, despite being exhausted, i can't fall asleep until like ...8am. considering i also work & attend school ... it's been rough.

2024 Week 5

I need to get better about writing these blog posts on a timely basis. Originally I was using Twitter for every thought that popped into my head and posting it immediately, but I got tired and embarrassed by that very quickly.

I have multiple Twitter accounts and have been using the platform since 2016 I think. My main Twitter has a lovely selection of posts— art from my favorite artists, cute foods, different sciences, psychology, astrology, and funny memes. Then there's one I made as a VTuber and one I made for art after the last account was hacked. I don't check the VTuber one anymore because it's full of VTuber drama or overtly sexual humor. I understand that's part of the appeal of VTubers, but the jokes are so corny and make me cringe quite a bit. It makes me feel like I'm back in high school with a bunch of obnoxious students yelling dumb jokes as the teacher is trying to speak. Very specific, I know, but I think we've all experienced something like that.

The art Twitter isn't any better since I follow some VTuber mutuals on there. The people I follow are fine, but on the timeline I still see dumb posts with people either stirring up drama, spreading misinformation, or being overly dramatic about simple things. The memes on there are also super outdated— like stuff I saw back when I was still on Tumblr is making rounds again and people are eating it up. It's just become very off-putting to be there. I did have a lot of fun posting daily as a challenge though. It was a good exercise in research to see what kinds of posts were doing well. And I do like the mutuals I made through streaming, they are all very sweet people. I want to stay connected with them if possible.

I've been brainstorming other ways to pursue "content creation" (I hate that phrase). I just want to share my work with others and bond with them over it. I don't desire to be famous or have a community, I just want to have fun with my hobbies and interact with people.

Maybe it's better if I make a text document and update that like a Twitter every day for the week, and then compile them all into a post on Saturday or something like that. I will think about how to continue the consistency. This is probably the clunkiest post I've made because the sentences are so abrupt and short. But right now I just want to get my thoughts across.

Nothing super interesting happened this week I guess. I found a new dentist and set up an appointment with them, which is early tomorrow morning. I need to schedule a checkup next, but maybe I will wait a bit for that. I want to get a blood panel done this year and see how I'm doing. Work was dull this week because I barely had anything to do— and then suddenly I had to repeat one task three times, which was annoying but no one's fault.

It's been storming a lot so I made a tasty soup today. I used the chicken stock I made and froze a few months back, and added wood ear mushrooms, shimeji mushrooms, baby bok choy, green onions, soy sauce, sesame oil, and noodles. The broth tasted especially good after the ingredients simmered in it for a while. I want to try making it again. I want to make a heartier one though since this was a very light vegetarian soup.

The storm was making me feel anxious though, the tree outside was waving its branches wildly and bending to the winds. the wind and water hitting against the outside surfaces of the house was also a bit eerie to hear. My fear is that the roof will crumble and place will flood, though I think the place is a lot more structurally sound than that. I have enough food and a giant flashlight if I do lose power (many of my friends already did today) so I will just try to be careful.

As a very Catholic family, Christmas was always a family gathering not to be missed and while modern dating or 'talking', especially in 'cuffing season' seemed like the normal reason to not ask Rex to the annual Cartwright festivus gathering. This celebrity wedding-level gathering was always, at minimum, the one time a year friends and extended family got together for gifts and food, music and dancing. There was still the summer vacation to Byron Bay and various trips made for smaller gatherings, then the annual Sunday dinners where friends and family went to her parents' if they were in whatever town they happened to be in. When she'd told Rex about her family being close and having a 'found family' in all the cities they'd lived in, she'd been vague on purpose. Brie didn't want anyone to be intimidated by the Cartwright empire or judge her as a spoiled rich girl over her unusual circumstances. This year there'd be no hiding the family legacy because it was being hosted at Kelham Hall, the largest estate any Cartwright had; her uncle Caleb's home in Nottinghamshire that he'd recently inherited after the passing of her paternal grandfather.

After sending Rex a quick, Text me when you're here so I can find you. She'd been making her rounds, answering nosy questions about where she was thinking about staying once residency was done and if there was a man in her life. Only her parents knew Rex even existed and that was after some digging on their own. Wanting a break from the questions and the growing crowd Aubrianna slipped into the massive library, or at least she'd meant to. This week had fewer people, but was still close to the entrance many were coming through. Immediately, her slight frame in its sparkly red dress was smacking into a person- or rather the side of one. Rex caught her at the waist in the hand not holding his phone. "We've really got to stop meeting like this before one of us gets hurt?" Aubrianna laughed as she kicked the heavy doors closed and tugged at his coat to reach his lips. While it may have been slow and sweet, she didn't pull away. Her pale blue eyes fluttered open for a moment and only a moment to look at him and whisper, "Buon Natale, Rex."

Maybe the responsible thing would have been to drag him to her room, one of several dozens, or to push him back between the rows and rows of bookshelves. Maybe she should've waited to show him how much she'd missed him. Maybe, but she didn't. It was only kissing after all- or it had been until Rex's hand was moving down her exposed back, squeezing the curve of her ass, and then slipping under the high slit at her thigh. A few months wasn't enough time for Brianna to be ready for sex, but feeling his lips on her skin, the warmth of his body pressed to hers, the curl of his fingers inside her slick heat. Well, if anyone had been in the library they were definitely getting a show. Their only saving grace was the heavy doors blocking out sound on both sides of the space.
