Daylight savings time means....we actually made mass in our Cathedral yesterday!

This was my cathedral for as long as I lived in New Orleans. It is the oldest Cathedral in the New World. It hasn't always looked this way, of course. It's final incarnation came about towards the end of our time here, but still. It's the cathedral I dragged my family to whenever there were evening masses, which was not so frequent back then as it is now. I remember when the bell tower and clock were added. Claudia was just a child then, and I used to take her in late at night to feel the bell vibrate through the whole building.

I remember when they brought an Italian man in to paint the frescoes. The garish electric lights, I'm told were added in the 20s and changed to those horrible blinding blue eco friendly lights rather recently. Still. It's beautiful. It felt good to be inside again. I haven't been able to get in, since apparently houses of worship lock their doors at night now. Not very inclusive of them.

(in related Catholic news, are we all celebrating Pope Francis saying trans people must be given sacraments? I actually got Gabrielle into a cathedral for the first time in a few centuries because of that!)

This was Claudia's favorite stained glass. It's towards the back, on our side of the cathedral, near where our family used to sit at Christmas Mass and Easter Vigil. She liked the man dying on it. The first time she saw it she was still a five year old and asked my why the man was dying. I told her the actual story of the saint in a whisper and she listened, wide eyed, still an actual child, and then promptly shook her head and said "No, daddy. He's dying 'cause...." She paused and giggled, then shouted. "I ATE HIM!"

The whole congregation turned and stared. However it was hardly the first time a child had shouted in the middle of mass and it would NOT be the last. I think of it every time I see that pane.

This is the not the Joan of Arc that was there at the time. The one that was there was a copy of a joan of Arc that stood at the Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, and she stood outside the chapel, where Lestat would often have to take Claudia out and let her walk around when she was genuinely young if she got too fussy during mass. He would tell her about Notre Dame in Paris, and about Joan of Arc, and she quite took to the story, as many little Catholic girls with slightly violent tendencies do. When we did finally get to Paris and saw the Notre Dame, Claudia rushed inside to find the statue Lestat had told her about, only to find the one they were familiar with had been recently replaced. She cried for her dead father there.

Lestat also shed a tear at this replacement, thinking of her.

Chapter two: Awkwardness

"It's barely the first day JJ, stop complaining," Pope mumbled as quietly as possible.

"I'm bored," the blonde boy groaned.

"You sound like a toddler,"

"You're lucky I'm not acting like one, I officially hate the TV room," he shrugged in his seat, "This chair is so uncomfortable,"

"We only have a few minutes left before we go do garden duty, in the meantime, try to relax," Pope's sight went back to the 10 elders already fast asleep in front of the screen.

"I already took a nap, which, by the way, your shoulder is not as comfortable as I thought,"

Pope rolled his eyes, "You seemed really comfortable to me, there's drool all over it,"

JJ's blood got unintentionally warm, "I already said I was sorry," he whispered.

"Sorry doesn't take off the tobacco smell,"

"Oh, relax, your mom still washes your clothes,"

"Yeah, and she always gives me shit about the smell because I'm always babysitting you,"

JJ rubbed his eyes, "Can we please change the subject? I don't wanna bring up cringy memories right now,"

"Oh, now you're embarrassed?"

"Yes!"

Pope covered his mouth, "Shut up idiot, you're gonna wake them up,"

JJ quickly licked Pope's palm and then giggled at his disgusted face. The Heyward boy went back to his serious demeanor, now he was annoyed, and in a sudden rush of regret, JJ tried to copy his attitude, after all, Pope was only here because of him.

Like a match on fire, the guilt burned its way from his brain to every part of his body while more and more thoughts began to pop out of the blue, Pope didn't wanna come here in the first place, what if the other places were better for his resumeé? Could someone in charge from the scholarship board turn him down because they're homophobic or transphobic? What if something goes wrong in one of the Ferries they take and he gets injured? Or worse, what if he dies? And all because he wanted to make fun of him. Selfish fuck. Those two words echoed insatiably hurting his every cell, not because it was extreme, but because it was true.

His hand began to sweat soon after, his leg began to shake, from the corner of his eyes he saw Pope and pursed his lips, this wasn't the first time Pope was there by his side to make amends of his past mistakes, mistakes he never seemed to learn from. Could he be tired of him? No, because he's here, doesn't mean that he won't eventually be, what happens then? What if that happens while they're here? What if his tolerance suddenly ends and he explodes? He can't lose him. Not him. Wait, why not? Because...

Blank, like lost in a white nothingness, JJ's brain ran out of ideas. Why was Pope so important? His heartbeat fastened its pace.

"Okay, calm down. First of all, stop this bullshit, this is just Pope we're talking about, your best friend. Second, take one thing at a time, you can't change all the times you've fucked up, nor can you stop fucking up all of a sudden to make him happy, start small,"

He took a deep breath cooling down his skin inch by inch"Hey," Maybank broke the silence, "I'm sorry about being late yesterday,"

Pope widened his eyes and a grin appeared on his face, "Did you just apologize for being irresponsible? Wow,"

"Okay, you know what? Nevermind, forget I said anything,"

"No, no, no, you can't take it back now, JJ Maybank apologized for the first time in his life, this is one for the history books,"

"I'll officially never be nice again," JJ raised his hands in surrender.

"I don't care, you already did it, ah," Pope exhaled, "This is the best day of my life,"

"I'm supposed to be the arrogant one here,"

"Yeah, until you just showed your true colors, deep down you're nothing but a sweetheart,"

JJ shook his head and looked to his side.

"Are you blushing? Oh my god, what day is it?" Pope checked his phone, "Today 8th of December is the day that JJ Maybank apologized for the first time and I made him blush,"

The blonde boy chuckled, "Only you Pope, only you," he surrendered to his friend's cockiness.

"You're awfully quiet, last time I checked you couldn't stop making fun of your friend when you arrived today," Ophelia elbowed JJ.

The boy huffed, "What can I say? I'm just a little zoned out today, that's all,"

"Well, you better get your thoughts straight because the plants can feel you,"

"Really?" JJ's question was filled with sarcasm, but unfortunately, the woman was too naive at the moment to notice.

"Of course! They don't only feed on the sun and water, but the energy around them is also crucial, why do you think so many people talk to them? To make themselves and the being better,"

"Well, I've never tried it, so, I don't know, but- but my grandma used to do it sometimes when she was in her last days, she was diagnosed with dementia so we always thought it was because she was crazy, maybe she was even saner than the rest of us,"

Ophelia nodded and grabbed one of the Camellias they just planted, "Here, this is yours from now on, give it a name and let's go plant it somewhere in the maze, come on,"

"But Ophelia- I don't know how to take care of it,"

"Don't worry, I'll help you,"

They both waited for the other to move.

"Don't stand there, you have to choose the place, not me!"

"Right," JJ obeyed.

After finding a semi-dark spot that conventionally had a bench to its side, they managed to set it in place.

"Have you thought of a name yet?"

"Um, kinda, would it be weird if I named it like my grandmother?"

"Not at all! All of my plants are named after my dead relatives, it makes me feel closer to them," she explained, "What was your grandma's name?"

"Lillian,"

"It's a beautiful name,"

"Yeah,"

"Now, whenever you feel like you just need to be listened to with no interruptions, come to Lillian, talk to her about those things that you'll never dare to tell anyone else, right now I think you need it, so I'm gonna give you too some space,"

And just like that JJ found himself silent once again, Ophelia had every hope that it would help him, it wouldn't hurt to try.

He cleared his throat, "Hey, I don't- I don't know how to do this so I'm just gonna rant about things, um, okay, " he paused, "Okay so, I feel bad about bringing my friend here with me, I don't know why I just suddenly felt so... I dunno. Here's the thing, the plan was for him to come so I wouldn't be bored and now I feel like an asshole. Um, I'm here because I stole some shit from a 'Bath & Body Works', it's a long story, but the point is- I convinced him to come and I didn't even ask him if it was hard for him to do it, I just assumed it wasn't because he hasn't complained and I know him, he probably won't, but I uh- I've never felt like this before, you know? I've always done shit and never cared, but I care about him and it feels like I'm a hypocrite because if I care about him so much, then why do I keep doing shit that will probably turn out to be bad for him?

Not gonna lie, I did start to feel a little awkward before, but just like 1%, now I'm at a full 100 and I don't want him to stop being my friend, which now that I hear it out loud, it's ridiculous, I'm just overthinking something that's not even important, well he is, but like- Okay, I don't feel bad for what I did, I'm just scared to lose him, that's all, which is a valid concern, right? I mean he's- he's my friend,"

*posts answer literally 5 days later* Turns out I did survive the day!! lol

You almost drop a bottle of milk when you hear the intercom make an announcing Ding sound cut through the background music. Will turns around expecting something, anything, to jump at him from the next isle and the suddenness of it all has just as irritated. Instead you hear the distorted voice of Pope coming over the speakers, so loud it’s mixed with horrible screeching noises.

“Ladies and Gentleman!” Will’s face, which has been a mirror of your own confusion seconds before, falls at the sound of his best friend’s slurred words.

There’s a faint snicker of someone in the background “- Gentlewoman!” and, you wouldn’t bet money on it, it may sound like Francis. On second thought, a drunken Pope is very likely to be accompanied by an equally drunken Francis. 

“Ladies and Gentlewommn!” More laughter in the background. “We’re very sorry to interrupt your delightful shopping experience on this bright and beautiful day but we have an announcement to make.”

Will let’s out a heavy sigh next to you, dragging his hands across his face and while he doesn’t seem to enjoy this one bit, you can’t help but crack a smile at Pope’s stumbled words and Fish’s humms of agreement in the background after every sentence.

“My man - or shall I say y/n’s man? - is getting married in a week. Can I get a hell yeah for that?” 

There’s polite clapping from the people around you and Will looks like he wants to curl himself into a ball and vanish between the bottles of milk. So far no one has caught up on the fact that he’s the one this is all about but people start to look your way as Will leans himself against the glass doors, shaking his head in embarrassment.

“That’s right, yeah! Now, Willy boy.” Pope takes a second to gather himself, the intercom screeches once again “Would you come out of hiding and give us the honor of taking you - drumroll please - “There’s a short drumming sound that only lasts for about a second before shouting ensures and you can only gather bits and pieces from it.

“You’ve promised I get to talk too!”

“If you wanna talk you just have to say something!”

“How am I supposed to get anything out if your big ass clogs up all the space in here?”

“My what now –”

“Ow! Quit beating me up!“

As the fighting quiets down it’s Fish who giggles into the microphone. “Willy, Willy - May Willy Miller please come to the help desk, Willy Milly please.” 

Will’s head slumps down to your shoulder and you can only give him a half hearted pat on the head. “Please don’t let them take me.” 

You’re about to answer as you look up from Will trying to hide himself in your arms to lock eyes with Benny, grinning at you from the other end of the isle. There’s about a second where you get to open your mouth to warn Will before Ben’s deep voice bellows down the hallway. 

“BROTHER!”

The Synod of Bishops on Young People, the Faith, and Vocational Discernment will begin on Wednesday, 3 October. Young people from all over the world participated in a first-ever Pre-Synod Meeting in March, in Rome, as part of the preparation process for the Synod. 5 young people, representing the world’s 5 continents, addressed Pope Francis during the Pre-Synod meeting in March. Representing the Americas, Nick Lopez, Director of Campus Ministry for the University of Dallas, was one of them. Nick talked about this experience during the Spring General Assembly of the US Bishops Conference in June.

Receiving the invitation

Nick recounted how he received the invitation to address Pope Francis just two weeks before the Pre-Synod Meeting.

I received an e-mail from the Vatican that went something like this: ‘You have been selected to address the Holy Father, Pope Francis, on behalf of the young people of America. Congratulations. Your address is due by the end of the week. Oh, and PS, here in Europe, we consider both North and South America one America. Good luck.'

Preparing the address

With the help of USCCB staff, he succeeded handing in on time what he wanted to say. It was important for Nick that the positive and negative realities of the experience of young people be balanced.

Unfortunately, today our popular societal opinion of youth and young adults is that we have a lot of problems, or simply that we are the problem to be solved. Some say we cannot commit, or that we are all addicted to technology, or that we are religiously or spiritually illiterate.

Building solidarity

He also wanted to emphasize that these issues can be confronted together by strengthening bonds. This was why Nick says he decided to open and close his remarks in Spanish.

While I speak very little Spanish, it was a simple act of acknowledgement and solidarity with our brothers and sisters of Latin America who we in the United States too often struggle to embrace.

Issues common to young people

Nick soon learned that the issues that he brought up in his address are not exclusive to the Americas. “Each day people approached me with words of thanks and reflection for my address, sharing with me their own similar situations.” It didn’t end there. When he returned home, the messages continued arriving, through e-mail, Facebook and phone calls.

Young people ‘in it together’

Nick says that it is important that the Holy Father heard a common thread in the 5 testimonies he listened to. But he says it was an equally important reminder to young people that they are “not alone, but more importantly,” that they “are in this together”.

‘You spoke well!’

About the actually experience of addressing the Holy Father?

Yes, it was an amazingly beautiful experience to address the Holy Father, to embrace him and to hear him say with a hearty giggle, ‘Hablaste muy bien’, ‘You spoke very well’. What marked that experience, however, more than anything else, was his authenticity. It did not feel like a diplomatic meeting or simply a political gesture. It was a real desire to encounter and hear us.

What does wellness and being healthy mean to you?

First, it means to love yourself: decide you are a priority and worth taking care of! Although it is very easy (especially as women) to put yourself after other people and the never ending to-do list, it is so important to take the time to nurture your mind, body, soul and spirit.

Second, I believe it means being comfortable in your own skin. You be you -  work it, own it, love it!!! You are perfectly beautiful, unique and amazing just the way you are :)

I truly believe being healthy is not about "changing your body" but about changing the way you see yourself change. Let the "why" behind your workout be bigger than the physical results (which will eventually come). Enjoy and appreciate your strength and beauty in the process of that!

My previous studio had wireless microphones we had to wear while teaching. I was getting ready to start teaching class and had to run quickly to the bathroom.

In my head, I swear I turned up the music and turned off the mic. Apparently, though, I turned off the music and turned up the mic!  

Needless to say, when I came back in - I had 25 women looking at me with funny faces and giggles. They heard EVERYTHING as they sat there in silence waiting for class to start!

How did you get into BarreAmped and what are your future plans for barre?

I started teaching at The Bar Method in the United States about three years ago. When I moved to Singapore, I was looking for a similar feel to that particular method. BarreAmped was founded from the Lotte Burke method (as was Bar Method) so it was a natural fit. I started taking classes and got into teaching as soon as I could.

I love teaching… so, I hope to continue to do just that. I enjoy motivating and pushing clients to feel accomplished and more confident after each class. My goal is to continue to have people leave their time with me feeling better and stronger than when they arrived.

What is your favorite way (aside from barre) to keep fit and find some downtime?

Truly, barre is my happy place and hands down my favorite way to stay fit! But... I do have a very active 2 year old at home, so chasing him around keeps me moving the rest of the time!

List your 3 dinner party dream guests, what would you talk about and what dish would you prepare for them?

I don't enjoy cooking at all- but I do like to bake, so everyone would get desserts :)

My family: Everyone is in the USA, so they would be my obvious first and favorite choice to have over! I would make homemade ice cream (the old fashioned way) which is our tradition when we are all together. I would combine it with my favorite Singaporean dessert - waffles!

Pope Francis: He seems to be a truly genuine and pure man in the way he loves God, loves others, and cares for the poor. I would make my famous chocolate chip cookies (paired with milk of course). You can't get any more pure and beautiful than that.

Brene Brown: She opened the world's eyes to vulnerability and authenticity through sharing her own journey (TED talk). I would love to hear more. I would make her my original banana chocolate chip muffins.
