i like the idea of pat being super physically affectionate like even in the tiniest little ways because obviously he worked with kids for a decade, so his instinct is always a hand on your shoulder or a high five or a hug or a ruffle of your hair. so like sometimes alison will say something funny and he'll go to clap her on the back and make himself nauseous. she gets a cramp and grabs onto the railing of the stairs and he automatically tries to put a hand on her arm to steady her. mike is cooking and about to touch a hot pan and pat instinctively tries to push his hand out of the way and he doubles over through the stove.

and then with the ghosts like it took a loooong time for some of them to get comfortable with it because most of them are really repressed and come from time periods where casual affection like that is just unheard of. every time someone gets walked through pat is there to rub their back. when cap is on patrol and pat is walking with him looking at the birds, he puts a hand on his shoulder to guide him out of the way before he steps on some gardening equipment. sometimes he catches himself licking his thumb and rubbing some soot off of mary's face without even meaning to. julian hurts his finger straining to type and pat instantly pretends to offer a bandage and kisses it better. he'll do that dad thing where he just falls asleep on the couch and robin will curl up next to him. when he wakes up and robin's still asleep he pets his head and furs as robin snores. he offers to fix fanny's hair when they've had a particularly rowdy day despite the fact that it will fix itself in 5 minutes. he hugs kitty good morning every day. do you see my vision.

irt poverty/homelessness + alcohol use (esp with @butchfeygela‘s tags on my post)- people really underestimate the function that substance use/alcohol use can have for someone who is unhoused. being unhoused is boring, cold, painful, + lonely. substances can allow the 8 hours panhandling to get the $45 you need for a motel to fly by. alcohol reduces your perception of the cold + can knock you out whben you can’t sleep. substances can help you cope with the physical deterioration from malnutrition, constant stress, + sleeping outside. substances can provide social connection with others who you would otherwise not enjoy or help you cope with being alone.

not only that but- many unhoused people are stuck in a seemingly inescapable position. the pathway to financial stability or even housing is difficult or even impossible. in the wake of that hopelessness, the downsides of substance use start to seem insignificant. arrest? you’re getting arrested anyway for sleeping outside, peeing outside, standing in the wrong place, etc. physical danger? you’re already beat the fuck up, anyway, right? loss of relationships? you’ve lost most people already. inability to keep a job? nobody will hire you + you can’t stay employed, anyway, because you have no car + no shower.

perhaps for you or me, the cons of heroin use or binge drinking nightly greatly outweigh the pros. that isn’t the case for everyone. if we are really serious about ending overdose/addiction, we need to start looking at giving people lives worth recovering into instead of shaming them for their own hopelessness.

#i had a long talk with my dad once about how #my brother sank into so much financial despair #that he was never going to be able to find #a livable job or housing (eviction record #plus bad credit plus #arrest record ofc #he was going to be forced into poverty for the rest of his life #the only job prospects he had were menial shit jobs #he once worked at one of those chicken butchering places #it was the only place that paid him a living wage but he got fired for relapsing #his only options were to go to school part time + try to pass with his dyslexia which made him essentially unable to read #then work a horrible shitty job the rest of the time #while paying atlanta's outrageous rent prices #plus who is he gonna room with?? all his friends are opioid users! #while he paid back all the debt he accrued from going to rehab #then MAYBE after like 6 years of school he could get a decent job #but his credit would be in flames for years his eviction record there for years #his arrest record + lack of driver's license limiting his employment.. #sorry but i would have probably given up at that point too #not to mention his interpersonal + familial relationships up in flames + the shame #of the things he did while using hanging over his head #the only family member who didn't think he was an irredeemable fuckup (me) living a thousand miles away + about as broke as him #substance use #harm reduction

Cap slowly becoming a dad to Daley owns my whole heart. Sharing their special interests with each other and info dumping, going on missions (errands) together, Cap helping him with homework and giving him advice. Daley cuddling up to and falling asleep on Cap during movie night because he feels safe in his presence. The first ping to Ryan's phone takes the boy by surprise, hands fumbling with the smart phone to get it out of his pocket. Only a few people have his number, fewer still that might text him in the first place. Excitement makes his fingers clumsy as he almost drops his phone.

The chances of a spam text to disappoint the child are high, but this one doesn't. The notification makes Ryan's face light up with delight as it reads 'Dad🦅'. Homelander.

Ryan's carefully plugs in his PIN to unlock his phone before pulling up the full message.

Ryan can only stare down at the screen in utter bewilderment as he takes in the configuration of characters before a second text pops up. A third. A fourth.

billy never saw himself as a father, but when he met you, that changed. he wanted the domestic life with you, everything he couldn't have with becca. so when your daughter was born about two years into your marriage, he was the most excited man you'd ever seen.

she became his whole world overnight. the moment he held her the first time, it was like the world stopped spinning, everything clicked into place, and he felt the most at home he'd ever felt in his life.

years later, he dotes on her like you wouldn't believe. you've had to warn him time and time again not to spoil her, but he does anyways. he can't help it, she just has the cutest face in the world.

but when it comes to having princess tea parties, he isn't exactly thrilled when she wants him to wear a plastic tiara and a tutu to match hers, but he does it anyways. he'll sit in a tiny plastic chair in her playroom and sip pretend tea from plastic cups with fake sugar cubes in it, all to see her smile.

what he wasn't expecting, however, was the random visit from the boys. he was still in his princess getup when he answered the door, thinking it was you, but instead it was frenchie, m.m, hughie, annie, and kimiko. because he had forgotten it was your monthly dinner together, the one you loved to have to make sure they all stayed connected.

the laughter was unstoppable as they piled into the house, and you can bet frenchie snapped several photos. the only one who understood was m.m, as he had a little girl of his own. he and billy share a knowing glance, and then billy catches your eye across the room.

that look lets you know you're in trouble, but the best kind of the trouble. but all of that is forgotten when your daughter comes running from her playroom and jumps into her father's arms. and suddenly, he doesn't mind wearing the princess clothes as much.

but he'll kill frenchie if those photos end up anywhere.
