Other Events During Solarpunk Aesthetic Week

What? You mean to say there's other stuff going on during Solarpunk Aesthetic Week?

Yes! While we didn't want to clash with the usual hosting time for Solarpunk Action Week, it's impossible to host an event without other things also going on! Let's highlight just a few other things that are happening this week, so they can maybe inspire some of what you do for Solarpunk Aesthetic Week!

Pollinator Week 2023 actually takes place June 19th - 25th just like our event!

"Pollinator Week is an annual celebration in support of pollinator health that was initiated and is managed by Pollinator Partnership. It is a time to raise awareness for pollinators and spread the word about what we can do to protect them. The great thing about Pollinator Week is that you can celebrate and get involved any way you like! Popular events include planting for pollinators, hosting garden tours, participating in online bee and butterfly ID workshops, and so much more."

Feel free to check their site here to learn more! Maybe make some pollinator-inspired art and take some biodiversity-boosting actions to celebrate!

Juneteenth/Juneteenth National Independence Day is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, celebrated on the anniversary of an order proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas on June 19th 1865 (two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued). You may see and hear of public readings, street fairs, cookouts, parades, and more celebrating this event in the US--especially since it was officially declared a federal holiday in 2021, meaning its an official day off from school and work for many people now.

Always, but especially on this day, consider the important role and contributions of African Americans and other Black groups have had and will continue to have on history, punk spaces, and the present and future of Solarpunk!

Summer Solstice is June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere, marking the official beginning of the summer season! This day symbolizes the zenith of the sun's position in the sky, and the longest day of the year.

We're called Solarpunks for a reason! And coinciding with this date was totally purposeful on our parts. Let the sun inspire your works--whether it be thinking up solar panel concepts, painting a sunny meadow scene, or just imbuing your work with the bright and blazing energy of our brightest star, go forth and create!

Winter Solstice is also June 21st in the Southern Hemisphere, marking the official beginning of the winter season! This day symbolizes the death and subsequent rebirth of the sun, and is the shortest day and longest night of the year.

When we visualize Solarpunk, we tend to think of bright and sunny spring and summer days, with lush green growth all around. But what would Solarpunk look like in the fall and winter? Let's start talking about it, changing up our color palettes and creating! And if it's wintertime for you right now, tell us about how you're solarpunking even in the colder months!

World Music Day, also known as Fête de la Musique, takes place on June 23rd and celebrates the universal language of music. This day originated in France in 1982, aiming to encourage both amateur and professional musicians to showcase their talents in public spaces, while also providing free access to concerts and performances for the public. This observance promotes the importance of music in society and celebrates its cultural diversity.

Music often plays a major role in people's lives today, and I see it being no different in a Solarpunk future. Whether you're writing up song lyrics or making chill beats, or listening and contributing to our collaborative Solarpunk playlist, or anything music related--let's take a moment to consider the power of music to spread messages and hope!

June 25th is the last day of Solarpunk Aesthetic Week, and is the Day of the Seafarer! Day of the Seafarer aims to recognize the invaluable contribution of seafarers to the world economy, trade, and well-being of our people. The International Maritime Organization established this day in 2010, and is observed through various activities like ceremonies, celebrations, panel discussions, and workshops.

When it comes to thinking of Solarpunk societies, its important to consider our relationship with the sea and people who traverse it. In addition, the subsect Lunarpunk often has an association with communities living in close ties with the water--consider looking into it as we celebrate Solarpunk Aesthetic Week--there's all kinds of inspiring content out there, and we can always contribute more!

Whenever I’m visited by out-of-town friends in the summer, I usually take them down to the beach to get a bit of that West Coast vibe. The plant community is the very picture of globalisation because the only native plant that I see in abundance is the common horsetail (Equisetum), and that doesn’t count because horsetails are found everywhere except Antarctica.

This species of Butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii) is originally from central China and parts of Japan. It arrived in European gardens in the 1890′s and was already being declared an ‘invasive weed’ in Britain in 1922. Here it prospers on the other side of the Pacific Ocean, “duking it out” with a host of other introduced plant species.

Butterfly bush is often grown as a garden ornamental because it is attractive to butterflies. However, this particular ‘garden escapee’ is being pollinated by a honey bee. Butterflies are sensitive to habitat destruction, pesticide use and, increasingly, climate change. As local gardeners, we don’t see that many butterflies around these days but these honey bees are part of the problem too.

In 2021 the global honey market was worth 8 billion dollars with over 94 million registered bee hives world-wide. The number of hives is expected to grow another 8% in the next five years. Each bee hive can consume 250 kilos of nectar and 50 kilos of pollen a year, and this represents enormous competition to native pollinators of all kinds, especially bumblebees and butterflies. Some jurisdictions are now considering restricting the number of honey bee hives to assist conservation efforts and increase biodiversity.

We wake in the middle of a life,                    hungry. We smear durian            along our mouths, sing soft death a lullaby. Carcass breath, eros of  licked fingers and the finest perfume. What is love if  not         rot? We wear the fruit’s hull as a spiked crown, grinning in green armor.   Death to the grub, fat in his milky shuffle! Death to the lawlessness       of dirt! Death to mud and its false chocolate!   To the bloated sun we want to slice open and yolk                      all over the village. We want a sun-drenched           slug feast, an omelet loosening its folds like hot Jell-O. We want the marbled fat of steak and all        its swirling pink galaxies. We want the drool, the gnash, the pluck of each corn kernel, raw and summer                   swell. Tears welling up                     oil. Order up! Pickled cucumbers piled like logs for a fire, like fat limbs we pepper and succulent                in. Order up: shrimp chips curling in a porcelain bowl like subway seats. In a future life, we saw rats overtake a supermarket with so much milk, we turned opaque. We wake to something boiling. We wake to wash dirt from lettuce, to blossom into your face. Aphids along the lashes. Little girl, don’t forget              to take care of  the chickens, squawking in their mess and stench. Did our mouths buckle                                at the sight of  you devouring slice                after slice of  pizza and the greasy box too? Does this frontier swoon for you? It’s time to wake up. Wake the tapeworm who loves his home. Wake the ants,                  let them do-si-do a spoonful of  peanut butter. Tell us, little girl, are you hungry, awake,                               astonished enough?

For the homies who haven't followed for a long time, why the quest for swampweed milkweek seeds?

So I’m currently at the library so if this answer is lame I may go into more detail once I get home but the long and the short of it is Swamp Milkweed Pretty Pink Color. Long version below.

Summer ~2015 (I think): volunteering at the zoo, making and selling seed bombs to raise money for conservation projects. Some Karen sasses at me for encouraging people to make butterfly gardens/plant butterfly friendly plants (??????) and basically says ‘You probably don’t even so how dare you imply I, a mother of 3, should.’ I take that as a challenge.

Fall and Winter 2015: start collecting seeds and stuff from whatever stores sold them cheap for a butterfly garden. Start learning about how important milkweed is for monarchs. Goal to obtain Any Milkweed is a go.

Spring 2016ish (I think): I find milkweed for sale at garden stores! This is Tropical Milkweed (Asclepias curassavica), and most of it is red and orange. While googling I find a Really Nice All Yellow Variety and my goal becomes Obtaining Yellow Milkweed.

Spring 2017ish: obtain yellow milkweed. At this point I have like 7ish tropical milkweed plants in my garden.

Spring either 2019 and 2020: at this point I have been growing milkweed and other flowers pollinators like for awhile when I learn that UH OH. Tropical Milkweed is invasive in my area! And I really shouldn’t be growing it! (One could argue the greenhouses in my area shouldn’t be selling it in the first place and I’d agree but I digress.) In my quest to figure out what species of milkweed ARENT invasive in my state—native, even—I find swamp milkweed and its the prettiest plant I’ve ever seen. Fuck yellow tropical milkweed, this plant is BRIGHT bright pink, beloved by caterpillars, beloved by pollinators, and smells like VANILLA? I want it now.

Thus begins the quest to grow it (and other species but mostly swamp milkweed) from seed. It never works out.

Spring 2020: accidentally steps on seedlings. Fatality.

Spring 2021: seeds were cold stratifying in the fridge but were left out of the fridge too long, sprouted in the bag for three days, and were weak as hell when I finally put them in. Forgot to water. Fatality.

Spring 2022: seeds are left in cups for way too long, forgot to water because Senior Project, cold stratification of next batch doesnt go well. Fatality.

Spring 2023: seeds mold while cold stratifying, germination rate is ‘one out of 21’ and then that one dies because I forget to water. Fatality.

During that whole while I’m thinking to myself ‘ok I suck at growing these from seed maybe they sell them in greenhouses and plant stores?’ And no they don’t. Until earlier this year when I finally find them being sold at native plant festivals (wherein which I arrive too late to my town’s once-yearly native plant festival and they’re sold out of milkweeds before the 30 minute mark of a 5 hour event YES I’m still mad about that) and other gardening festivals (shout out to the lady selling swamp milkweed at the zoo’s garden festival AND the honeybee festival) and ONE garden store near my friend’s house by the beach called Earthworks.

There are other milkweeds I am questing after now because there’s like 21-22 native milkweeds in Florida and my goal is to grow as many different varieties as possible (which is HARD because NO ONE SELLS THEM except for at this once a year plant sale and they don’t have enough to last THIRTY MINUTES YES IM STILL MAD). Currently I’ve also got my eyes set on sandhill milkweed (Asclepias humistrata) and Redring milkweed (whos latin name I don’t remember right now). Also trying to figure out why pictures of swamp milkweed are Bright Ass Vibrant Pink but all the ones I’ve gotten and that my garden server has are pale ass strawberry milk pink but yknow.

Since I’m trying to start a career in animation I’ll likely end up moving to Southern California sooner or later, and all my knowledge about swamp milkweed will be Fucking Useless. But worry not! I have another milkweed to obsess over that grows in Cali! Heartleaf Milkweed (which might be Asclepias cordifolia but I could be remembering that wrong) is GORGEOUS and it has the growth habit like Sandhill in a sense but the flowers are droopy and VELVETY PURPLE and the leaves are HEART SHAPED (kinda) so yknow. Vibes.

Anyways yeah thems the brakes pal.

Joan D'Alessandro remembered as family's fight for child abuse victims marks 50 years

McGowan, who would later admit to the killing, wrapped her body, loaded it into his car and drove to Stony Point at the edge of Harriman State Park in Rockland County, New York, where Joan's body was found three days later, on Easter Sunday. Frederick Zugib, then the medical examiner for Rockland County, called the case one of the most brutal crimes he had investigated.

Rosemarie's staunch resistance to McGowan's potential release moved the still-grieving mother to ensure other families would not have to suffer the same trauma of fearing that their child's attacker would again be among the general population.

In 1997, she successfully lobbied for the passage of what came to be known as Joan's Law, which repealed parole eligibility for any detainees convicted of sexually assaulting or killing a child under age 14. The next year, federal lawmakers passed a similar rule.

McGowan remained grandfathered into his sentence and was never subject to the new rule. Yet he never benefited from the carve-out and died in 2021 while serving a life sentence at South Woods State Prison, four years before he would have been up for parole yet again.

"She was a leader," said Olivia Galgano, who taught Joan's ballet class and five decades later can still vividly recall the waifish girl. "Often, I would say we have to line up and she would run to be first."

Mere months after McGowan's death, the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office cut the ribbon on "Rosemarie's Room," a new extension to the office's Child Advocacy Center in Paramus, where law enforcement, medical and mental health professionals can tackle allegations of child abuse. Jason Love, then the chief detective of the office, described the expansion as a "safe place for our children to whisper their secrets."

It was allegedly the whisper of a secret that was McGowan's undoing. As Tobin continued to recount the investigation into Joan's death Wednesday at the Hillsdale train station, he said that as investigators grilled McGowan for the second time, probing his involvement in the savage killing, their suspect continued to deny any part in what occurred. As their scrutiny grew closer to the truth, he did not request an attorney, but a priest, Tobin said. Offering him the same privilege as they would someone in a confession booth, the detectives stepped out while McGowan spoke with the cleric. On his way out of the interrogation room, Tobin said, the priest turned to the officers and told them, "Fellas, keep questioning him."

Rosemarie details her fight to keep Joan's memory alive in a soon-to-be-released book, "The Message of Light Amid Letters of Darkness." Proceeds from the book's sale will benefit the Joan Angela D'Alessandro Foundation, which advocates for child victims of abuse.

In the D'Alessandro home, Joan's memory is very much alive. Colorfully painted rooms are adorned with photos of the spry, auburn-haired little girl who had a magnetic personality. Her bronzed ballet slippers and favorite trinkets sit atop shelves. And drawings of butterflies she carefully colored are framed and hung on the wall. The butterfly has become symbolic to D'Alessandro and is integral to Joan's garden in the center of her hometown in Hillsdale, New Jersey. The second time Rosemarie returned to the site Joan's body had been found, a white flicker caught her eye. It was a white cabbage butterfly that greeted her as she approached the boulder with a crevice.
