Yo why hollyhocks gotta be so tall? Bursts into flowers at shoulder height, then just keeps growing. I have several taller than the first story of my house. Who you tryna outgrow, gurl? The sun?

Swallowtail Butterfly - September 2020

There was no placard giving the name of this bush, but it was what I have commonly heard called a “butterfly bush,” and many butterflies were enjoying it. I took several dozen images of butterflies flitting past the flowers of this bush.

My Nikon P900s has a setting called “Bird Watching” which will take a series of rapid images when the shutter is pressed. The advantage is that you can sometimes catch a bird actually landing or taking off or looking right at you. The disadvantage is that it takes up to thirty seconds to “develop” the burst of images before you can take the next shot.

I used the Bird Watching setting to capture these images of a female Swallowtail. Without such a rapid burst of images, it is almost impossible to get a good image of a butterfly with its wings spread. When they are flying, they are usually flitting too fast, and when they land, they raise their wings fully upright so all you get is one-half of the underside.

In the first image, the Swallowtail has just landed. In the second she is fluttering her wings slightly for stability. That image shows the coloring of her body, legs, and antenna very well. The last image is from directly behind her while she is moving the two plates of her wings separately. I have taken a LOT of butterfly images and I have never before gotten an image like this.
