There were some customers you knew from a glance that you’d be talking smack about in the break room as soon as they left the building and there were ordinary ones that you forgot immediately. And there were the absolute unicorns like the impossibly hot guy standing in the middle of the aisle holding a box of fairy-lights in his hand like it was an alien artifact, a guy whose hands you noticed were well-made but sort of rough, like he worked in construction or landscaping and the way he squinted at the fairy-lights made it clear he was used to working in the blinding sun of a Texas afternoon.
“Can I help you, sir?” you said. You’d been raised by your grandma, a stickler for manners, and management loved how easily you used sir and ma’am with the customers, even if Neveah who worked the baby section made fun of you for it.
“I dunno, maybe?” he said. He had a nice voice, a little gravelly. “My brother said these are popular, for girls. Saw it online, TicTac or whatever—”
“TikTok,” you offered.
“Yeah, that,” he replied.
“For your niece?” you asked. He’d mentioned a brother and he wasn’t wearing a ring, just a beat-up watch.
“No, my own girls. I’ve got two, they have to share a room, bunkbeds. My brother said it looked like juvie, last time he came over.”
“That’s harsh,” you said, shrugging slightly, hating your store smock. He smiled and you saw you’d underestimated how much better he’d look with his lips curved, his dark eyes bright. You felt a little wild, decided to push. “They didn’t want to go shopping with their mama?”
“It’s just the three of us,” he said. “Their room could use a woman’s touch. I’m not good at that shit—‘scuse me, that stuff. I do new construction, renos, but not making the rooms look nice.”
“The thing with fairy-lights is you have to have enough of them,” you said. “Otherwise, they look kind of cheap and pathetic. Are you planning on putting the lights on the bunkbeds or the walls?”
“I figured I’d let them choose,” he said.
“Okay, well, it’s not like those are on final sale or anything, but if you buy three, you get the fourth free, so maybe get four and if they don’t want that many, you can return them. Just save the receipt,” you said.
He nodded, dropped the box in his hand into the basket by his feet and you grabbed three more to give him. There was no reason his fingers would’ve grazed yours unless he was the one who did it.
He did it.
“You’ve been real helpful,” he said. “Got kids of your own?”
“No,” you answered. “Just some nephews and I go on TikTok. I’m not a Luddite.”
“Hey, they got a bad rap. They were protesting for better working conditions. They didn’t hate the machines, just the management.”
“I hear that,” you said.
“That’s why I work for myself,” he replied. “Only way to have a good boss.”
“Yeah, this place isn’t the worst, but it’s not like they go overboard to be nice,” you said. “The break-room snacks are just the store-brand knockoffs they can’t sell.”
“There’s a decent coffee-shop up the street, lattes and they have a barista,” he said. “My brother’s with the girls until I get home. If you wanted, Christ, this sounds so cheesy, I never do this, you know—”
“I can tell,” you said. “But my next break is in ten minutes. I could go for a latte.”

Ideas for my 2009's humanstuck au:
• Nepeta, Sollux, Karkat and Terezi are close friends.(Karkat is their internet friend in common because he lives in Argentina and they live in the US).
• Nepeta is an otaku and fan of warriorcats, likes to rp with terezi and Feferi. Likes to draw and animate in her nintendo ds.
• Sollux is a computer wizard, a huge gamer (mostly plays Cod) and likes to spite Karkat and his gamer skills. He is a sarcastic king and charges people $20 to fix their computers.
• Sometimes Sollux pirates Nep's favorite animes for her and they watch them together.
• Terezi is blind in this au. She likes candy. A LOT(the reason why she wears braces) specially those cherry jelly gummies. She likes 90's fashion and watching dragon tales (couldn't be more proud about this fact)
• Feferi is a huge fan of everything sea related (coughmermaidscough). Attends to swimming lessons along with Eridan. Has a plethora of mermaid swimming tails. She also likes to take care of her fish pets, sometimes a little too much.
• Fef's mother is kind of absent, her big sister, Meenah, too. So the staff in her mansion take most care of her. Nonetheless, she always has a good spirit, even if she feels somewhat alone.
• Eridan is the typical snobby teen with straight A's and a rich family (which might be the reason for the A's). He often goes to parties with his "friends" in the academy, but really the only friend he has and understands him is Feferi. He often feels alone because his father leaves for business trips, leaving him with his excuse of an older brother.
• Eridan likes and owns all of the Harry Potter Saga (at the moment) but prefers not to nerd out in fear of rejection (only nerds out to Feferi). He is also an avid fan of greek history and mythology.
• Tavros (who is a pokémon encyclopedia) is close friends with Aradia, sometimes they trade pokémon cards and have a few matches. His family immigrated from Spain to Argentina.
• Tavros is best friends with Gamzee, they hang out often and have rap jam sessions with basic rap beats coming out of Tav's family computer.
• Gamzee is...you know how Gamzee is. He likes Porta and ICP, sometimes he ends up at the hospital for drinking too much soda. Likes drawing and making tye-dye tshirts. His father owns a huge furniture store but most people in town think the store is just a facade to hide more..criminal matters.
• Karkat sometimes hangs with Gamzee, but he's more close with Kanaya and Ter. He likes programming and playing Cod, but not as much as watching the pirated romcom cds he hides under his matress with Kan.
• Karkat also has a slight obsession with the telenovelas his dad watches(coughMaríaladelbarriocough), which are the same ones Kankri criticises for being too problematic.
• Kanaya attends a catholic school her mom is a teacher in with Karkat and Rose. She likes to buy fashion magazines and tries to copy the models with the patterns they provide. Has a small academic rivalry with Rose Lalonde, but there's also some sparks there.
• Aradia lives in the same neighbourhood as Karkat and Tavros, and is internet friends with Sollux, who she met on club penguin a few years ago. She is more of an outgoing kid, and is not often seen inside her house unless she is initiating an excavation in her backyard in search for bones. Any kind of bones.
• Aradia is also internet friends with Nepeta and Terezi (they talk sometimes in skype) they're planning to one day meet up in the future and play dnd together, with their new addition to the group, Vriska.
• Vriska lives in the US in Equius' neighborhood. She has been Terezi's friend on and off, because of differences between eachother. She also met Tavros on the online game "8 ball pool" and tries to teach him how to ace pool like her.
• Vriska is kind of the problem child in her school, a punk at heart. She skips school often and disrespects authorities. Nobody but Ter knows the reason behind this jealousy towards her older, more successful sister, Aranea (and perhaps some neglecting from her mother too).
• Vriska likes fantasy books (often where the hero is NOT weak and is VERY awesome) and likes to imagine herself in those worlds as a form of escapism. She also likes Avril Lavigne and has a pet spider, which is very demanding when it comes to food.
• Equius is the quiet but kind kid..if not a little weird. His family proudly owns a robotics company his father initiated in the 90's, Equius is the nervous heir in line.
• He is very close friends with Nepeta, to the point of having grown together. They have a small tradition of celebrating eachother's birthdays with a tea party. Nepeta likes her tea without milk, Equius prefers more milk than tea.

How did u first start listening to the music u listen to now?
damn that's a bit of a story. I had a varaiety of music i was introduced to as a kid. my mom would play her disco and funk tunes and my dad would play his corridos and banda. i could never get into my dad's side of the music i realley loved the beat of funk and disco. i then later was often glued to MTV and had come across some rock n roll bands being played along side VH1. so i still had some mad love for disco and funk..the guitar really drew me in like love at first sight.
after visiting an older cousin later. i was introduced to Rap and Hip Hop so i kind of i put my love for rock n roll a bit behind while i dove into this style of music. keeping my eyes glued to tv for music videos or always wanting to find either rock or hip hop radio stations.
One day i came across a greenday CD i'll say to this day im not ashamed to admit it. some will think this is lame but i dont fucking care. The Album Dookie from Green Day is still one of my absolute favorite albums of all time. Whenever i listen to it i get instant nostalgia of when i started to get into punk. Not too fasty and not to slow but a right balance that give me a deeper push to buy a guitar and play in my own band some day.
Anyways assuming i havent lost you yet here. i started asking about more punk bands and thats what i thought punk was. until i came across the ramones and found out they were an older band so i wondered how long this kind of music was already a thing. a few serches here and there and i discovered the 80's hardcore punk bands and the scene through documentaries i was introduced to more and more bands. black flag, bad brains, then later from blanks 77 and the casualites i came across street punk and i started to really love punk.
I began to dive deeper and deeper into this rabbit hole. from there i had shit happen in my life that i couldnt get away from and punk music was my escape. to tell you the truth i've never wanted to be normal. the look and ideologies of punk started to reel me in and before i knew it i was making friends into the same and had also had things that we bonded over. then they introducted me to more bands and it just kept going and going. as the years went by i met people who were into punk but some specifically into a certain subgenres and id also go to shows and do some searches online and thats how i got into various sub genres of punk.
Currently i fuck heavy with D-Beat, Crust and Metal. I also kept my love for rap, hip hop and funk. irronically though i had recently started giving corridos and banda a shot....shit slaps hard not gonna lie....my dad has good music taste lol
